By MATT GARRICK A LIGHT aircraft carrying the body of Dr Yunupingu left Gove last Thursday, bound for Darwin, where the Yothu Yindi singer will be prepared for burial. During this flight, the plane reportedly dipped and flew low over Elcho Island, to take in a once-in-a-lifetime vision of community togetherness; Galuwin’ku’s schoolchildren had gathered on the oval to form two letters: YY. The respect and love for the man

who created history as frontman of the world’s most-popular Indigenous band was powerful throughout East Arnhem Land on the day. An impromptu ceremony was held at Gove Hospital, while the body was removed from the town’s morgue for transportation. A couple of hundred Yolngu and Balanda gathered on the hill next to the morgue, as traditional dance and ceremony was undertaken around the Troop Carrier carrying the singer’s body.

A procession of dozens of vehicles then followed the Troopie to the airport, where friends, family members and respectful onlookers gazed on as the body was placed in the aircraft. Car horns tooted in unison and the sounds of Galiwin’ku’s Saltwater Band blared from cars, as Dr Yunupingu bid farewell to his Homeland, and his people relayed a mournful goodbye to a leader. said the family was feeling the loss very deeply. “Our brothers, sisters, daughters and sons have lost a leader, friend, father, uncle and brother. “A leader on the road to reconciliation. “We will always feel his absence. “It’s has been very hard to say goodbye.” A State Funeral offered for Dr Yunupingu by the Northern Territory Government has been accepted by his

family. The service will be held at Gulkula, the Garma site, on June 30. There is an open invitation for people to attend the service. The Arafura Times will publish further details next week. Although the funeral service will be held at this time, the burial of Dr Yunupingu will take place at a later date, undertaken through traditional Yolngu protocol. The singer died on June 3 in Yirrkala, after a long battle with kidney disease.

FLY-IN, fly-out workers are limiting the amount of jobs for local indigenous people and helping create devastating socio-economic problems, says would-be Northern Territory Senator Nova Peris. Ms Peris was in Gove last week where she met with various organisations and individuals to discuss the issues affecting the region. In a chat with the Arafura Times, Ms Peris spoke about how workers who come in from outside the NT are taking jobs from local people. “Australia is an amazing country to live in, and there are opportunities, but the opportunities need to be directed at the people who need it most. “When people don’t have jobs, it creates a whole heap of devastating problems. “Fly-in, fly-out workers are a big problem for Territory people who are having their jobs taken. “There is an economic boom that’s going to occur in the NT, and I don’t think people realise what is going to take place.” Aboriginal people want to work and further their own economic development, she said. “They want to be able to utilise their land to sustain their lives on country. “If you can get that right, then health and education and all those things will follow.” While economic development could strengthen indigenous culture in the region, the government’s policy of Intervention was not the right way to push it forward, she said. She said the Northern Territory Intervention had created a “great divide”. “The Basics card and all that sort of stuff creates a division among people.” She talked of how indigenous and non-indigenous

people could move forward together. “The Northern Territory is a beautiful place, and I’ve met an enormous amount of non-indigenous people who are so passionate about the culture that is so entrenched in the NT. “I met plenty up here who just love the Yolngu people, and that’s what it’s about. “Breaking down those stereotypes.” If Ms Peris wins office come September, she will be able to voice some of her ideas for the NT’s future in the Federal Senate. She also spoke of how, as an eternal optimist, she doesn’t worry about the current turmoil in the Federal Labor Party affecting her chances of getting voted in. “I’m one of the most-optimistic people, and I don’t get bogged down in that. “I’ve got a string of gold medals and feathers in my cap, and I don’t contemplate losing. “What I’m doing right now is preparing myself for what September brings.”

Nielsen to deliver pointers to Gove’s Pontings FORMER head coach of the Australian cricket team Tim Nielsen spent years of his childhood in Gove, but said he hasn’t managed to return since the day he left, around 1980. Come August 3 and 4 this year, Mr Nielsen will be making his return - to attend Nhulunbuy’s inaugural cricket tournament and maybe teach a few tricks of the trade. He said he’s looking forward to revisiting the spots of his youth, where he used to wile away the days playing sport and zooming around on his pushbike. “It was such a relaxed place to grow up. “I did grades four, five and six in Gove, when my dad was the vice-principal of the school. “There was only one school there at that time.” Mr Nielsen said he wasn’t just looking forward to reminiscing; he was looking forward to getting into

some fun cricket action. “Because of my job these days as State talent manager for Cricket South Australia, I keep a tab on talent in the Northern Territory, but mainly I only get to see what is coming out of Darwin. “This will be a great experience to see what’s coming out of rural NT.” He also said the competition would be a great way for locals to catch up for a barbie and a beer, while enjoying a couple days out on the pitch. There’s not just fun up for grabs at the competition; there was at current $6000 prize money on the table. Rotary member and competition organiser Brendan Muldoon has asked people to register their teams of eight people now, so preparation can properly commence. “We’re full steam ahead planning the event, but we need the community to get involved and register now, so

A MAN and a woman were arrested at Gove Airport following a bag search late last Thursday night, which revealed more than 30kg of kava, with a street value of about $1000 a kilo. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said Nhulunbuy Police attended the airport and conducted searches on the baggage of a 51-year-old male and a 50-year-old female. “Police located 22.3kg of kava in the man’s luggage and 10.2kg of kava in the woman’s bags,” Snr Sgt Muldoon said. “Both offenders were arrested and have been charged with offences including possessing and

Dr Yunupingu’s historic role in education remembered LONG-STANDING Northern Territory Senator Trish Crossin says she remembers teasing her old friend Dr Yunupingu about spending too much time playing guitar. Dr Yunupingu and Ms Crossin taught together at Yirrkala Community School during the 1980s, where Dr Yunupingu eventually rose to become principal - the first Aboriginal school principal in Australia. “We would often tease each other; me saying he was always off spending too much time on the guitar, him telling me I spent too much time running around doing union work and playing in politics,” Senator Crossin said. She said she was deeply saddened by the news of Dr Yunupingu’s death on June 3, and said it would impact on the hearts and minds of a great many dear friends and family.

As an educator, Dr Yunupingu was a true champion, she said. “He was an incredible champion of both-ways learning, and his promotion of bi-lingual and bi-cultural education has improved the education sector and improved the lives of students who have been able to be involved in this unique approach. “He has been a wonderful leader for the Territory, for this nation, and for the international community of music lovers, educators and those fighting for cross-cultural understanding.” Ms Crossin will soon be stepping aside from her role for the new potential Labor Senator for the Northern Territory, former Olympian Nova Peris. Ms Peris was in Gove last week, and also expressed the deep sadness she felt after hearing that Dr

Yunupingu, one of her heroes, had passed away. “I remember at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in 2000, getting onstage and dancing with Yothu Yindi. “It’s a sad, sad loss.” She said the day she heard the news, she had just gotten off a plane in Alice Springs, to go to a Native Title conference. “It was Mabo Day. “The significance of Mabo Day, and what he fought for, and for that old man to have passed away on that same day, and what he stood for; with education, his people, his culture and the land. “It was tragic.” Tributes continue to flow for Dr Yunupingu, who will be formally farewelled at a service at the Garma site on June 30.

Cabinet sinks sea-bed mining on Groote A NORTHERN Territory Government cabinet meeting in East Arnhem Land last week resulted in the decision to ban sea-bed mining in the waters around Groote Eylandt. NT Minister for Regional Development Alison Anderson was in Gove last Thursday, on her way back from the meeting on Groote, and said the decision was based on environmental issues. “Sea-bed mining has not been tested anywhere, and I don’t think the Northern Territory should be the first to be a testing ground. “We’ve got the most-beautiful countryside in the world, whether you talk about my country in the desert or places like Maningrida, the Tiwi Islands or here. “Why would we want to be a testing ground for something that hasn’t been tested>” The decision was made after cabinet ministers spent two days

on the island, where they were lobbied by local residents and members of the Anindilyakwa people, the island’s traditional owners. Local leaders reportedly told the cabinet that the community wanted to develop sea-based businesses on its own. They said they want to establish ventures like sea cucumber aquaculture so they were not reliant on royalties in their future, when production in the island’s mine finishes in 30 years. Mining company Northern Manganese had been granted exploration licenses for the waters around Groote, but will now not be permitted to mine there. The company has since said it might take legal action over the ban. It is believed Northern Manganese has spent more than $500,000 on their proposed Groote project.

Frenchmen a long ruddy way from home TWO French travellers found themselves stuck in Gove last weekend after the rudder on their yacht was shattered. The two men, Jerome and Raysun, had been part of a bigger crew sailing together from Tonga. On their way to Australia, they stopped in ports in exotic places such as Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. They were meant to be headed to East Timor, but were forced to drop into Gove after their rudder was destroyed on a reef. A makeshift wooden

rudder was constructed to aid their passage into the region, but the men said it was enough for them, so they’ve taken to the road, hitch-hiking. Traveller Raysun Sennane said the problem had occurred in the Torres Strait, in Far North Queensland; an area notorious with sailors due to its myriad reefs. “We suddenly heard a noise, then it was impossible to control the boat anymore. “We were drifting.” Their makeshift rudder was built using a boom from

the mast and wooden boards from a bench. “After that we were just crossing our fingers for good weather, and that our repair was strong enough to last a few days.” The boat, named Sisyphe, travelled 500km across the Gulf with the busted rudder, until arriving in Gove on June 15. While a few crew members stayed onboard the ship, Raysun and Jerome left to attempt hitch-hiking the remote Central Arnhem Highway to Katherine on June 16.

WHEN local Fiona Pearce was fundraising for Nhulunbuy’s first Relay For Life run, in 2007, she learned some tragic news. Her father had been diagnosed with cancer. “When my sister told me, I nearly fell over. “That was a pivotal moment in realising Relay For Life’s importance.” Ms Pearce’s father has since passed on, but his fight against cancer will not be forgotten. Relay For Life, to be held in Gove over August 17 and 18, gives locals a chance to do their bit in the battle. It is a fun charity event held where teams with a minimum of 14 people try to keep a team baton moving around the track at Hindle Oval continuously over 18 hours. Teams are encouraged to fundraise for the event, proceeds of which go to the Cancer Council. Ms Pearce, the Chairperson for Gove’s Relay For Life, said the town had already begun rallying together. “There are not many people who can say they don’t know somebody who has died from or is battling cancer.” A total of 21 teams has registered so far, which Ms Pearce said was the most they’d ever had. The group are already on their way towards reaching a fundraising goal of $67,000, to help find a cure for the dreaded disease. “We’ve already raised $9000, and that’s just what’s going on the web.” There are also raffle books being sold, and an auction will be held on the night. Community members have been urged to donate whatever they can for the auction. “It can be anything; for example, you could donate an hour of car cleaning, or your services in some other way.” She said there was still plenty of time to join up and take part in Relay For Life; head to http://www. relayforlife.org.au/, click on Find A Relay, then follow the prompts to Gove. Entsch vows to pursue CASA over Barrier demise By MARK BOUSEN MEMBER for Leichhardt Warren Entsch says he will be calling for a full inquiry into the operations of the Cairns office of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) after the Federal election on September 14. Currently the Chief Opposition Whip, Mr Entsch was indicating he expects an LNP Government will be elected, and, once in government, he will be able to act. Speaking in the House of Representatives in Canberra on June 5, Mr Entsch launched a tirade against the Cairns CASA and the demise of Barrier Aviation, concluding his speech with: “After 14 September, I will be calling for a full inquiry. “I will not let Barrier be destroyed without holding those individuals who are directly responsible for this sordid business accountable for their actions. “This industry urgently needs an independent body and

rights mechanisms to hold CASA Cairns accountable for their own inadequacies and conduct.” Barrier Aviation operated a fleet of more than 30 aircraft from bases Gove, Horn Island, Darwin and Cairns, and employed more than 50 staff and operated more than 30 aircraft. Mr Enstch is able use terms in the House under privilege which are protected from legal action. The Member for Leichhardt was scathing of Cairns CASA and its operations, and named three people he holds responsible. “What is also unbelievable is the abuse of process. “Six months after Barrier was forced to shut its doors, they still have not been able to test a single allegation in court - and at the cost of $28,000 per day in lost revenue. “And to top it off, CASA has sent press release after press release with statements that have never been tested.” Mr Entsch continued: “Around 50 people have lost their jobs, investors have lost millions of dollars, and (owner) David Kilin has lost his life’s work. “And even now, CASA is not content with just burying Barrier, they want to dance on the grave as well. I was disgusted to learn that CASA Cairns has been speaking to potential purchasers of Barrier aircraft, threatening that they will not approve their airworthiness.” The seat of Leichhardt takes in part of Cairns and all of Cape York and the Torres Strait. CASA said any response would have to come from the Minister, Anthony Albanese.

A 62-year-old man has been charged with drink-driving after he was pulled over in front of the Nhulunbuy Police Station at 11am last Saturday. Police said the Nhulunbuy resident also was unlicensed. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said it was “disgusting”. “He thinks that he can drive around without a license, intoxicated, on a busy Saturday morning when there are lots of kids everywhere. “It’s disgusting, and I’m glad that we can now put him in front of the court.” The man blew an alcohol reading of 0.07. He also mentioned that a bi-product of alcohol abuse is domestic violence and suicides within the community. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.

Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system.  letters to the editor/comment NAIDOC honours the life of Dr Yunupingu THE National NAIDOC Committee honours the life of Yothu Yindi lead singer, Dr Yunupingu, who passed away recently at his home in Yirrkala at age 56. Dr Yunupingu brought to the world unique talents, gifts and abilities and it was this uniqueness that inspired his place in the world. He shared these gifts both as an educator and a performer. As an educator he was an inspirational leader and after gaining his university degree he went on to become Principal of the Yirrkala Community School in 1990, and spread the word regarding the importance

of education. As a performer, along with Yothu Yindi, he gave us words of wisdom and inspiration in song. These songs resonated, and continue to resonate, a message to the wider Australian community and beyond. Australia will always listen to the words of Treaty and remember with pride how this song became an anthem for all Indigenous Australians. In 1993, he was named 1992 Australian of the Year for his work as a musician and educator and for his tireless efforts building bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Dr Yunupingu as an inspirational leader also forms part of NAIDOC’s history, performing with Yothu Yindi at the National NAIDOC Awards on NAIDOC’s 50th anniversary in Darwin in 2006. His legacy will continue to live on as a true champion for his people and he will be remembered as a strong leader who stood tall and led with strength, resilience and wisdom. THE CLP Government has bowed to pressure by making amendments to its flawed Mandatory Alcohol Treatment Bill, which will see problem drunks locked up for three months and forced into treatment if picked up three times in two months. However, the amendments simply don’t go far enough, and will remain to criminalise public drunkenness. The key proposed amendments now see the period of detention for assessment and referral reduced from 13 days to five, and those who abscond from care will not be committing a criminal offence until they abscond a third

time. The legislation is fundamentally flawed, has no evidence basis that it will work, will be unlikely to stand up to legal challenge and has been widely condemned by legal and health experts and human rights advocates. This includes the AMA, NT Criminal Lawyers Association, Aboriginal Peak Organisations NT and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Social Justice Commissioner. When interviewed on ABC’s Lateline program last week, Chief Minister Adam Giles was unable to name a single expert who supported the CLP’s laws which fulfill an election commitment

after they scrapped the Banned Drinker’s Register and other alcohol reforms. They did so on the strength of populist belief that presenting ID to purchase takeaway alcohol was an invasive inconvenience which treated, according to Dave Tollner, publicans like “heroin traffickers” and made customers feel like “criminals”. These remarks were uttered at the recent AHA annual awards dinner in Darwin, where Adam Giles proclaimed that drinking in the Territory was “a core social value”. Labor’s alcohol reforms, of which the BDR was just one element, never pretended to be a silver

bullet. But the harm minimisation measures in place were reducing anti-social behaviour and alcoholrelated crime like domestic violence. Since its axing, we have had 10 months with no measures in place and a dramatic increase in demand for police and hospital emergency department services. The CLP would do well to heed the calls of experts and advocacy groups to scrap their proposed legislation and return to the drawing board and consult with experts about the best way forward in dealing with alcohol problems in the Territory. This has to include sup-

Surf Club chips in for Bondi (rubbish) rescue THE surf club season in Gove has kicked off for 2013, and the Queen’s Birthday long weekend saw the Sunday patrol at Little Bondi. The wind was blowing and the surf pumping, and luckily the sky was mainly clear. Unfortunately, due to big seas and ocean currents there was a large amount of rubbish washed up on the beach despite it having been cleared just a few weeks ago by Dhimurru Rangers. It was disappointing to see a beach as beautiful as Bondi in such a state. Oil bottles, medicine bottles, toothbrushes, thongs, shampoo and conditioner bottles and plastic things of all shapes and sizes made the place look like a rubbish tip. On Saturday afternoon, as

the Surf Club campers started to arrive, a working bee was organised that resulted in about 10 big bags and boxes of rubbish collected as well as a number of ghost nets. Special thanks to Deb Osborne and Barney for carting all the rubbish to town to be disposed of in the tip, and to everyone who made an effort to make the place look like a beach again. The rubbish on the beach is not our fault, but it certainly is our responsibility. There was an excellent turn-out for Sunday beach patrol, with more than a hundred people - nippers and families - there to enjoy the conditions. It takes a huge effort to get all the necessary patrol gear to Bondi to ensure the beach is a safe place for everyone

to enjoy, but well worth the effort. If you missed out on ‘fun in the sun’ at Little Bondi this time around, the next scheduled Little Bondi day is August 25. Stick it in your diary and hopefully we will see you there. Brett Parfitt, Gove Peninsula Surf Club Committee Member.

Number one hit for local songwriter FOR the first time in history, a song written in the Yolngu-Matha language of East Arnhem Land has reached Number One on the ARIA Australian Artists Singles charts. The song, named Bayani, was performed by Galiwin’ku artist Gurrumul, with Delta Goodrem, on television show The Voice, and was released as a single soon after. Bayini reached the top spot on June 8, beating the likes of mainstream contemporary musicians Matt Corby and Empire of the Sun. The achievement has been celebrated locally, as the song

was written by Yirrkala’s Rrawun Maymuru - lead singer from rising stars, East Journey. East Journey and Rrawun’s manager Susan Sandery said the achievement will be a boon to the musician’s long-term songwriting career. “For Rrawun as a solo artist and as one of the foundation members of East Journey, this will hopefully open new avenues in the years to come.” ARIA Chief Executive Officer Dan Rosen said the song showcased incredible songwriting talent and

artistry. “Bayini is a song that has resonated deeply with the Australian public,” he said. The achievement comes at a bittersweet moment, as the members of East Journey mourn the loss of their mentor, the lead singer of Yothu Yindi, who passed away earlier this month. Yothu Yindi’s song Treaty was the first song featuring Yolngu-Matha to gain extensive international recognition, peaking at Numbers Six on the USA’s Billboard Hot Dance Club Play singles charts in 1991.

Clowning around with Circus Oz TWENTY years ago, Circus Oz flew into East Arnhem Land in a vintage DC3 aeroplane. In July and August this year, they will be making their return; clowns and acrobats in tow, but sans the old aeroplane. Circus Oz is heading to the region for their Circus Oz Goes Bush tour, and giving some free community performances. They’ll be lighting up the communities of Ramingining, Gaupuwiyak, Yirrkala, and also performing for crowds at Garma Festival. Circus Oz Artistic Director Mike Finch said connecting with amazing local cultures while performing outdoor circus shows in communities has had a profound impact on its ensemble. “We’re honoured to be going back to one of Australia’s most-amazing regions, this time with two Indigenous ensemble members.” Since 1985, Circus Oz has toured large-scale circus works to remote communities, with a longterm goal of engaging Indigenous youth to establish community circus programs. Community circus programs aim to complement education initiatives focused on healthy living, practical skills and physical activities that are fun and empowering with extremely positive long-term outcomes. Circus Oz said there was also an emotional element to their upcoming visit. Indigenous Programs Coordinator Joshua Bond said in 1992, Circus Oz was honoured to perform alongside Yothu Yindi. “As we plan our tour to the beloved Homeland of Dr Yunupingu, we will remember him as a man who built bridges of understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people through music and education.” Circus Oz Goes Bush is supported by Recognise, Toll, West Arnhem Shire Council, East Arnhem Land Shire Council, Adventure Tours, Sidney Myer Fund, Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation and The Yothu Yindi Foundation.

Holidays computer game camp FOR kids with high hopes of playing computer games these upcoming school holidays, and for parents who need a break from the kids, there may be a solution. Gopu 13-15-93 v Djarrak 11-14-80 AFTER a thrilling third quarter of footy at Gunyangara Oval last Saturday afternoon, the scores were nearly tied. Both teams played well, but Gopu had the homecrowd advantage; there were plenty of cheers from the sidelines to egg them on towards their victory. A spectacular goal in the last couple of minutes and Gopu fans were breathing a sigh of relief. Footy carnival descends on Gove TEAMS from around Arnhem Land will descend on Gove this weekend, to vie for their position as the strongest league in the region. Footy fans, get ready for a busy weekend as the East Arnhem Football Carnival is coming to town. Throughout Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, Gove will be hosting the huge carnival, bringing teams in from all over Arnhem Land. Players from distant communities including Maningrida, Ramingining, Galiwin’ku, Gapuwiyak and Groote Eylandt will be coming to town to verse local teams in a series of quick-fire 40 minute games. GAFL President Hamish Simpson said the short games should provide some explosive footy. “It’ll be a top opportunity to see which region has the strongest league.” Logistically, setting the carnival up has been no easy task for organisers; five light planes have been chartered from Galiwin’ku, and a squadron of 4WDs will bus players in from the remote corners of Arnhem Land. Indigenous Programs Manager for AFLNT Kevin Bruce has said this was the first time a senior carnival for the region. “All teams are extremely excited,” he said.

Clontarf opens its doors Plenty on the line at Cape Arnhem

By HAMISH SIMPSON THE Yirrkala Clontarf boys extended an invitation to the wider Nhulunbuy community to join them for an early morning training session on Wednesday, June 5. There was a great response from the wider community. Local police officers Aaron and Erica, Mick Stimson from Gove FM, Yirrkala Sport and Recreation officer Nathan Djerrkura and Richie Seden from Miwatj Health joined three teachers from Yirrkala school in an up-tempo training session. The session started with a sharp skillbased activity, followed by a great game of half-court footy. After a light kick and a run around, the morning training session led into the weekly shower and hygiene program. Afterwards, the special training partners joined the boys in the Clontarf Academy

room where the lads laid on a hot breakfast for their new friends. The healthy theme of the term was continued with a special visit from St Kilda CrossFit instructors Jules and Pippa to the Academy room for a functional movement session. The visit started with an intense stretching session in the Academy room, before heading outside to finish with a power and sprint workout. Football was the focal activity used to demonstrate a range of different movements that can be assisted with some simple stretching techniques. The boys had a ball and were really surprised by the significant improvements that were achieved in such a short time with expert help. Plans are underway to introduce a modified version of the popular training regime, CrossFit, to the Academy in Term 3.

CAPE Arnhem was good for more than just camping over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend - the fish were biting like mozzies by the lagoon. Doctor Hijiri Suzuki (above) and her partner, volunteer Lindsey Blecher (below), both contributed to their dinner table with catches of a Coral Trout and a Giant Trevally. 11-year-old wins Gove Golf Open ELEVEN-year-old golfer Katelyn Rika has beaten 92 players to win the Gulf Gove Open. Katelyn set records on a grand scale when she became the first junior to win the Toll Marine Logistics Amateur 54 Hole Gulf Gove Open, held on June 8-10.

Players from across the NT, Queensland and Western Australia competed in very windy conditions, which resulted in many lost balls and wide shots across the fairways. On day two, Neil Burns scored the shot of the day, by plugging a ball into a tree trunk on the 16th.

Throughout the event, Katelyn remained calm and displayed strength, tact and talent amongst a field of experienced players who included one other junior, Zac Hughes from Palmerston. Katelyn’s uncle Kenny Gentle, who caddied for his niece during the Open, said over the course of three days, Katelyn had a solid swing and produced shots most of us can only dream about. “She never let the pressure get to her,” Mr Gentle said. On the course, Katelyn produced: • Her first birdie in a competition, • First gross score under a 100, and • A daily lowering of handicap by four points overall. Katelyn smashed her Day One score of 109 gross, 74 nett; with a personal best 97 gross, 62 nett on Day Two. On Day Three, another under par nett 69 and gross 104 gave Katelyn a winning lead of 10 shots total 205, to claim the title of Gulf Open Champion 2013. Runner-up and best nett visitor men’s winner Luke Sherwood from Darwin finished on 215, followed by Connie Kaipara from Aylangula with the best nett visitor on 219. THE crowd at Gove Country Golf Club was thinking pink on June 2, when 45 women came out to support Breast Cancer Awareness and compete in the Ladies Pink Jacket Day Ambrose. Winning team Pink Buggers - Marrion Niven, Karlyn Monteiro, Rebecca Cran and Debbie Osborne - laughed their way to victory, cleaning up an array of prizes. The traditional putt-off on the ninth green saw Marrion Niven claim the Pink Jacket victory. The best-dressed team The Pinkabelle Fairies - Tanya Brown, Kaz Rose, Penny Page and Yvette Unwin - damaged their wings and had to hitch a ride back in the ute. The longest drive on the sixth went to Donna-Marie Grieve, and Esther Rika hit the shortest drive on the first. The NAGA prize of the day went to The Bollywood Belles and the Bag Boy - Hutchy with Mandy Hutcheson, Debbie Webb, Sheena Rudolph and Debbie Beldham. Organiser of the day, Lee Peters, shared her highlight with participants by telling them it had been awesome getting her best friend of 34 years, Dotty, to the course to hit a golf ball for the first time. A huge thank you goes out to the sponsors on the day who included the Gove Country Golf Club, Maria Slatter’s Partylite, Ripeka Dargerville, Donna-Marie Grieve, former Pink Jacket winner Renee Chu and Lee Peters. This event has now been running since 2001 and many women over the years have donned their pink gear and enjoyed a ‘punch’ on the course. On this occasion, everyone had a great time and many women are already planning to attend the next Pink Jacket Day scheduled for later on in the year. This event is a fundraiser for breast cancer. It is hoped that a pink buggy will soon be purchased, which will have inscribed “Donated by the Pink Jacket Golf Day Ladies”. The buggy will be available for hire by the Golf Club and money collected will be shared between Breast Cancer Foundations, the Golf Club and Junior Golf.
