Out of Gove and Over the Top
The Over the Top Tour left Gove bound for Europe last Friday. YEAR 11 and 12 students from Nhulunbuy High School will this week be using the words “tre bien!” rather than “that’s awesome!” when they start exploring Europe on the Over The Top Tour. The students left Gove last Friday, bound for the cobblestoned streets of Belgium, France and England.
It’s the third time the high school has hosted the trip, with teacher Wendy Troe pulling the organisational strings. She said she has always found the trip to be very rewarding. “To see the students’ amazement at the little things; the advertisements, the buskers, the cultural tidbits. Our visits to the World War
One battlefields are probably an emotional highlight.” Ms Troe said the tour prepares the young adults for the real world that awaits them. “Students who have taken part in the past have become big travellers, and that’s really my dream to see.” Student Gabrielle Birch who was heading

Celebrate history with the P. M. and Gurrumul By MATT GARRICK COME one, come all to Yirrkala on July 10, to help celebrate history with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and musician Gurrumul. It’s the central event of a nationwide NAIDOC Week, which is this year honouring the surviving signatories of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions. In 1963, the Yirrkala Bark Petitions
were signed by 13 Yolngu clan leaders and sent to Parliament House to protest against the building of a mine on Aboriginal land in Gove. Fifty years later, in 2013, it’s time to remember this historic moment with a ceremony and concert in the spot where this landmark, social turning point took place. Ms Gillard will formally honour the surviving signatories of the peti-
tion - Wali Wunungmurra, Manunu Wunungmurra and Dhunggala Mununggurr - in the community from 11am until 2 pm in Rika Park. Following the ceremony, the Prime Minister will officially open the new wing of Yirrkala’s Art Centre (Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre); to be named the Djotarra Wing, after a highly respected deceased artist. onwards, the celebrations will continue with markets by the beach, Yolngu cultural activities, a jumping castle, waterslide, face painting, a photo booth, a basketball competition, and to cap it off, a free concert in the evening. The concert will feature local bands East Journey and the NEAL Boys, as well as the stirring sounds of Elcho Island’s Gurrumul, and will begin around 6pm.

NEWS IT’S about as Scottish as a misty moor, and now Gove girls are getting their kilts on and getting into the act. A group of local dancers have been busily training in the ancient Scottish art of Highland dancing, and on July 6 will be taking their talents to compete in the biggest event of their lives. The Grand Australasian Championships and Annual Festival of Highland Dancing will be held in Sydney, with five of our local lasses competing.
Tartan troupe heads to Sydney Arafura Dance Association teacher Sharlene Cardilini said the event was one of the most prestigious of its kind in Australia, and also features international competitors. “We anticipate there will be 200 competitors from Australia and Australasia.
“It will be a great experience for the girls, and I expect that however their results are, they will come home motivated and know what it is like to dance at that level.” The youngest girl in the troupe is Keala Florian, who is just seven years old.

THE singer of Cows With Guns, the 1996 cult hit about barnyard bloodshed, says the tune first came to him in a dream. Dana Lyons was in town earlier this week to rock out at the Arnhem Club and the Hog Shed, and, while here, he shared this freaky fact about his song and his subconscious. “The song has been a little miracle since the start. “Actually, I dreamt it. “My cat knocked a flower pot off the table and awoke me from my dream, and I had the whole chorus and the words there. “I went outside to the
parking lot and recorded it, and then I wrote down a bunch of the verses.” He then worked on the song for a few weeks, before it ended up at its present day form. For those who don’t know it, the novelty smash features lyrics like, “He was a scrawny calf, who looked rather woozy, no one suspected he was packing an Uzi.” But Dana also has an entire back catalogue of non-bovine related material; he is a staunch environmentalist, and many of his songs reflect this, and his skepticism of politics in his home country, the USA. Dana, who hails from

For the first and only time ever, the historic artworks the Yirrkala Church Panels, which are housed in the centre, will be able to be photographed. Mr Stubbs said the time was right to open the panels to the public. “The Prime Minister and the rest of the country have shown they value the importance of the Bark Petitions, so now is the time to showcase the Church Panels, which are like the
mum and dad of these.” The event will be alcohol free, and everybody is welcome and urged to come along and help honour a pivotal moment in Australian history. The momentous occasion has been organised with support from Anglicare, Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited, Pacific Aluminium, Miwatj Health, East Arnhem Shire Council, YBE, Nhulunbuy Police and many others.
Washington, sang an a cappella song about the Red White and Blue at the Hog Shed; a humorous and scathing attack on the US government’s penchant for invading countries to hunt for oil. Now on a tour around the country, Dana said there was something in the humour of his songs which reflected that of NT. “In the Northern Territory where it’s kind of wild and free, with a little bit of rebel spirit, Cows With Guns just rings true for the attitude. “It’s part of the reason I love coming, because it’s more free up here. “It may be more crazy, but it’s more free.” Dana ended his weekend with a rousing jam of Cows With Guns at the Hog Shed alongside some of our own musical royalty; Yothu Yindi’s Stu Kellaway on drums, and muso Paul Dewhurst, the author of Gove’s popular novelty song, Cane Toad Avenue, on guitar. Dana said he was thrilled to be in Arnhem Land, but will this week head off on tour to rural NSW.

New committee to tackle the tough questions THE announcement in February that the region’s alumina refinery would stay open may have helped allay fears of the town shutting-down; but why are people still leaving? Why are there so many empty houses? A new committee has been formed featuring members from key Gove businesses and organisations to try and answer tough questions like these. The Nhulunbuy Regional Development Committee (RDC) was created following an announcement by the Northern Territory Government in May that locals would have more power to forge the future of their own region and that’s just what the RDC aims to do. Chairperson Klaus Helms said after pushing to get Gas-to-Gove, and now being on the verge of achieving it, the RDC has the function to help drive the region further. “We have a direction and we’re focused and have enough good leaders on this committee to get something out of it,” Mr Helms said. The committee features leaders from the Chamber of Commerce, Lirrwi Tourism, Dhimurru, Laynhapuy, the
Department of Housing, East Arnhem Shire Council, Northern Land Council, YBE, Pacific Aluminium and more. The committee held their second formal meeting on June 19, where topics were raised including the need for Gove to have a more- diversified economy, and not have to rely solely on mining to bring economic benefits to the region. Lirrwi Tourism General Manager Matt Grooby said the region needs to remain a financially viable place to work and live after the life of the plant. “There are too many eggs in one basket. “The Gas-to-Gove situation highlighted the need for economic diversification,” Mr Grooby said. Other questions to be raised by the committee include how people living in Homelands could find sustainable prospects of jobs, and how costs of transport and building costs could be lowered. A couple of members of the committee voiced their opinions that fly in, fly out (FIFO) workers could be damaging to the region’s economic and job prospects. A spokesperson for Pacific Aluminium

Tollner urged to hit the road THE Northern Territory Treasurer David Tollner has been urged to bring a so-called ‘Budget Roadshow’ to Gove. Nhulunbuy MLA Lynne Walker sent Mr Tollner a letter last week, disputing his recent claims that a budget presentation “would not be well attended”.
She asked why the Treasurer’s budget presentations only went to Darwin and Alice Springs, and not to the regional communities, unlike the former Labor Government. Ms Walker wrote Mr Tollner in the letter that budget presentations in Nhulunbuy have been extremely well attended, at
least during her four years as local member. “I consider a crowd of 30 or so interested stakeholders to be a good turnout in my home town and certainly worth the Treasurer making a visit to talk about the 2013-2014 budget.” She also called on the Treasurer to consider

YOLNGU students learning English as a second language presented and explained a bark painting to a group of children at the Child Care Centre last week. It was their way of saying thank you for letting them share their knowledge and culture with them over the term, during a program initiated by Nhulunbuy Child Care Services. The Child Care services had approached Nhulunbuy Primary earlier in the term, to propose the idea that their English as a Second Language (ESL) students could come along to the centre and test their new skills by reading story books to young children. The program has been hailed as a total success, with the child care kids loving the stories, and the ESL students loving to tell them. A bark painting was created with the assistance of parents and grandparents of the ESL students. ESL teacher Shane Ogg said the painting symbolised the importance of togetherness and education. “The turtles were a symbol of cooperation, and a way of saying thanks to the child care centre for letting the students expand their skills. “The turtles all come together to feed on seaweed, Dr N. A ONE-TIME Gove schoolteacher has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of Anglicare NT. Dave Pugh, who worked in the region as a school teacher in the 1980s, when he also spent time in Milingimbi assisting in the Homelands movement, was welcomed to the position on June 20. The day after this he travelled to Gove, where he met with local Anglicare staff, community members and board members of the Anglican Church diocese. Mr Pugh said that for a long time he’s wanted to put his mind towards finding how a mainstream organisa-
tion like Anglicare can help contribute to Aboriginal self-determination. “I want to work in a team that finds solutions, seeks to learn from its clients and apply those lessons in new ways, in early intervention and with compassion. “I particularly want to be in a team that works towards closing the gap for Indigenous Australians in both urban and remote settings.” Anglicare is one of the largest providers of government-funded welfare, social justice and community development programs in the Northern Territory.

A MAN police have described as a “local On The itinerant” has been Beat jailed for 21 days after being caught with rifling through the fridge inside a house NT on Ferntree Close on Police June 18. The resident of the house woke up around 5am to get ready for work, when he discovered the man standing looking in his fridge. He chased the offender outside, and kept him restrained in the driveway while he called the police. The offender was by reports so intoxicated that his attempts to escape did not last long, then he just sat in the driveway and waited for police to arrive. He was arrested and charged with trespassing on enclosed premises, and handed a sentence of 21 days jail two days later. Police have urged locals to take the incident as a warning. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said cases such as this should always be reported to the police. “Ignoring an incident such as this has the potential to put others in danger. “By reporting this crime, even if we are not on shift, it lets us know the time of day incidents such as this occur. “Because the police were called, it means there is now 21 days that this offender cannot intrude around town.” To report an fridging offence, contact Nhulunbuy Police on (8987 1333). Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Board said the youth was located deceased in a billabong close to the family home at the outstation early in the morning of June 20. “Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death, however at this time it is not being treated as suspicious.” A file will now be prepared for the Coroner.

Garden Waste and the Blue Bins
The Nhulunbuy Corporation provides the large blue hook bins for domestic green waste which are emptied and relocated to a new location on a 4-week rotation. Where possible the green waste is wood chipped and used for the town’s parks and gardens. Garden waste is increasingly being dumped on the concrete bin pads when the bins are located at other sites. Even when the bins are there some residents just dump their waste on the ground near the bins. Other residents have used the bins for general rubbish. This has an enormous cost impact on the operation of the service and may result in the service being discontinued. We ask that: • Green waste is only placed inside the bins and not on the concrete pads • You store your rubbish at home until the bins are placed near your home • You use the bins for green garden waste only • You only put items in the bin that are of a manageable size • You take larger items directly to the Waste Management Facility for which there is no charge. Areas where debris was found were recorded, and samples of termites found in wood washed up from overseas was collected. ADDICTION is often viewed as an illness; something which can’t be controlled by the person suffering from it. Nhulunbuy Alcohol and Other Drugs Rehabilitation Services are implementing a program which seeks to argue this thought, and help addicts take control of their behaviour by teaching them how to make some simple choices. The program, named Smart Recovery, began in Nhulunbuy last week, when a specialist was brought up from Sydney to help train local staff on how it all works. Smart Recovery Coordinator Josette Freeman said it was all about empowering addiction sufferers, by teaching them the skills to make their own positive choices. “For example, if you have a drinking problem, you’ll end up having a drink at the end of the day to calm yourself down; and it’s about changing the mind-set of why it’s like that. “Having people question these feelings, and asking if they really do need it.” Smart Recovery encompasses all addictions and all types of substance abuse, not stopping at drugs and alcohol; addictions like over-eating were also covered, Ms Freeman said. “When people have to take some time out and enter rehabilitation, this program helps teach simple, everyday living skills they can use to deal with greater problems that await them on the outside.” Ms Freeman said with addiction, often the underlying issues which trigger them were the same; anxiety, depression, anger, stress, restlessness, loneliness, boredom and frustration. Although this is the first time Nhulunbuy has used this program, the concept itself is nothing new; it began around 20 years ago in the USA.

Sales of smokes barred in prisons TOBACCO will no longer be sold to prisoners ahead of a total ban on smoking in prisons in the Northern Territory. Prisoners last week had a final opportunity to purchase tobacco through the prison’s canteen system before it becomes classed as contraband. From July 1, the ban will apply to all prisoners, staff and visiting friends and relatives of prisoners. Minister for Correctional Services
John Elferink said people who are found to be in possession of tobacco or tobacco related products after this date would have these products confiscated and destroyed and may
face disciplinary action under prison regulations. “This ban aims to create a healthier Territory population with the harmful effects of smoking being widely known.” He said the smoking ban was part of a wider Healthy Choices program within correctional institutions, where prisoners are encouraged to exercise and make healthier food and beverage choices.
New world for Batchelor graduates A NUMBER of local tertiary education students have been granted their wings, after graduating and completing certificates from the Batchelor Institute on June 20. Toni Rusca from Gapuwiyak, Mandy Azzi and Samantha Goodlad from Nhulunbuy, Robyn Beecham, Charles Mbouti, Leon White, Danielle Yakubu and Banula Marika, from Yirrkala, all recieved new
accreditations from the event. A total of 277 awards were given out including Certificates I to IV, Diploma, Advance Diploma, Bachelor Degree and Graduate Diploma qualifications. Indigenous and non-indigenous students from 90 communities across the Northern Territory and interstate received their awards. Batchelor Institute Director
Adrian Mitchell said Batchelor campus graduation was a special event on their calendar. “It is a day that we get to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our students, many of whom have had to overcome numerous challenges during their learning journey.” The keynote speaker at the ceremony was popular television presenter Ernie Dingo.

This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.
Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.
When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Opposition scrutinises government spending PUBLIC hearings of the Parliamentary Estimates Committee continue in Darwin this week, and draw to a close on Thursday when we return to parliament to see the budget bills passed, but not before six days of exhaustive questioning across every area of government service delivery. Last week’s hearings revealed that the Member for Arnhem Larisa Lee had an incredible fuel bill for her vehicle totalling more than $14,000 since being elected last August. By contrast, my fuel bill was less than $1400 for the same period and my colleague, Gerry McCarthy, who is a regular commuter
via road between his home of Tennant Creek and Darwin, had a fuel bill in the vicinity of $6000. Given that Ms Lee is in reasonable proximity to Darwin from her home in Barunga and that several communities in her electorate are islands (Groote, Milingimbi, Bickerton) and that the Goyder River cuts her off from road travel to other parts of her electorate during the wet, the figures just don’t stack up. During questioning, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly has committed to investigating Ms Lee’s fuel bills against odometer readings to understand how it is that taxpayers are paying for
such excessive consumption. Last week in Estimates I had the opportunity to question the Attorney General about law and order and the corrections system, including the cost to taxpayers around controversial new laws for minimum mandatory sentencing and mandatory alcohol treatment which will see more people locked up. On Wednesday of this week, as the Shadow Minister for Local Government and Indigenous Policy, I will be asking Minister Anderson questions around these critical areas of government service delivery and the CLP’s pre election promise to ‘get rid of the shires’ versus current rounds
of consultations about local government reforms which are essentially about a rebadge from ‘shire councils’ to ‘regional councils’. L A S T w e e k e n d ’s inaugural East Arnhem AFL Carnival in Nhulunbuy was a huge success with teams travelling from as far as Groote, Maningrida, Elcho and Gapawiyak. I was so impressed with the quality of play, the spirit of camaraderie amongst teams, and the first class sportsmanship. Skiing down election mountain on a landslide IN the slow Himalayan ascent to the Federal election, Our Julia has just had a normal couple of weeks, while Tony Ears has had some wretched ones. Labor has dropped again in the polls - quite normal. The press say some nameless Labor members have wheeled out Rudd the Zombie again - yes, that’s normal too. And she was asked socially embarrassing questions by a vicious, empty-headed radio presenter. Yup, just normal. Her opponent, Tony Ears, should have had an absolutely terrible week - but somehow managed to avoid the shower of trouble altogether. It started when a menu from March 28 was leaked to the press, and
I’m sure you heard about that. If you listened to the same news that I did, you would have heard that the menu had several inappropriate comments about Our Julia’s figure, but no-one saw it and there is nothing to worry about. The politician most closely concerned with its production was a very nice, level-headed chap who wouldn’t dream of saying demeaning things about any woman. With Tony’s support, he has put the matter behind him and returned to his day job of telling the world what a wonderful leader Tony will make. Meanwhile, anyone with an internet connection can call up the menu and wonder what sort of national figures would indulge in such puerile,

Life’s no drone for film-makers

FAR RIGHT: Young director Ishmael Marika practices aerial photography with an unmanned drone. IT seems like something out of a science fiction movie, but unmanned drones are a reality of our times. And they’re even experimenting with them in Yirrkala. One was being tested last Friday by young film-makers from Yirrkala Art Centre’s Mulka Project to research how aerial photography, captured by the drone, could potentially help them make movies. Young director Ishmael Marika said the crew hoped to be able to attach a camera to a remote-controlled drone, which they would then use to film movie scenes from above. “We have plans to make a horror movie, about Galka; Galka is a person who has darkness in his body and kills people. We would use the drone to film from above while the character runs across a field, so it looks as if he is being chased.” The drone lessons were given as part of the Federal Government funded Remote Indigenous Public Internet Access (RIPIA) project. The project, set up through the NT Library, sends contractors to 19 communities across the Territory to help rural residents enter into the digital age, and be a part of today’s globally connected society. Contractor Anthony Gray said the project taught different digital technologies to suit different communities. “Some it’s just things like helping people set up an email account, or for a community like Yirrkala who are all over that sort of thing, the drone was what they wanted to try.” The drone used on the day was worth about $700, but other drones available to consumers can come with a price tag of $15,000; as they feature robotics which can control an attached camera remotely.
Film-maker tackles suicide Head First
Documentary-maker Sabour Bradley stayed in Yirrkala earlier this year to learn about youth suicide. A documentary-maker has explored the issue of youth suicide in Yirrkala, as part of a series called Head First; about Australians living extraordinary lives in hidden worlds. Film-maker Sabour Bradley headed to Yirrkala earlier this year to experience life under the rules of the Northern Territory Intervention. He said he wanted to find out what it was like to live under the Intervention, by staying in a tent on a beach in the community for a fortnight. On his first night, a suicide attempt by a young future leader shocked him to his core. One grandmother told him that: “There were very few families in Yirrkala who haven’t been touched by the death of a young man to suicide”. Mr Bradley set out to unravel what was affecting the community’s youth, by immersing himself in the lives of a few local young men. He said he provided an outlet for the young men to be heard in a way they had never been heard before. The documentary screened earlier this year on ABC2, but for those who missed it, it will soon be available to watch at Yirrkala Arts Centre.

IT was out of the classrooms and on to the ovals for Nhulunbuy Primary School students on Thursday, June 20, for Primary School Sports Day. There were sprints, shot put, skipping races and more on the day, as the school’s four houses; Daliwuy, Arnhem, Mitchell and Wirrwawuy; battled it out on the fields. Principal Matt Watson said the event was packed with team spirit. “Everyone participated, and cheered each other on with war cries. “It was also a community event; parents and grandparents came down and got involved, supporting the kids in any of capacity they could.” The Early Childhood Sports Day was also held, for the NPS littlies from Transition to Year Two.

STATE MEMORIAL SERVICE MR YUNUPINGU A State Memorial Service for the late Mr Yunupingu will be held at Gulkula, North East Arnhem Land (via Nhulunbuy) on Sunday 30 June 2013 at 11.00 am. NHULUNBUY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL, JUNE 21 CHEERING could still be heard as school buses took Nhulunbuy Christian College students home for their mid-year holidays, while the school community celebrated a successful athletics carnival. Shadrach House team members might have had a bit broader smiles as they took out the championship title for 2013, with Abednego and Meshach not far behind. Principal Steve Venour said the carnival was wonderful and it was fantastic to see all the kids participating. “The weather was just right and the students had a sensational time. “There was something about the day that seemed to make kids smile. “I am so impressed by the care shown by the older students to the younger ones; particularly the efforts of the House Captains in ensuring the little kids enjoyed themselves.” Mr Venour said he was always impressed by the bipartisan support shown by all students in cheering others on, whether they were coming first or last, and that he was grateful for NCC’s parent community for helping to make the day possible.

Face of East Arnhem footy’s future By ALF WILSON VERSATILE East Arnhem footballer Gordon Garawirrtja shone for the Northern side at the Queensland Under-15 schoolboys’ Australian rules championships at Dalby on the Darling Downs. The 15-year-old was so impressive that after the carnival he was named in the Queensland Country Merit side, and as a shadow player for the state team to contest the coming National titles in Darwin. Ten teams fought it out for the State championships in late May, and Northern won two of their four matches to finish sixth overall. Gordon is from Lake Evella (Gapuwiyak), and was Northern’s best and fairest player scoring 12 goals for the carnival. One of Kakadu’s moreelusive bird species, the rose-crowned fruit-dove, has been spied among the mostrecent visitors to Cooinda in Kakadu, 50km south of Jabiru. Bird watchers seeking the chance to view the spectacular plumage of this shy pigeon previously tended to try their luck along the Manngarre Walk by the East Alligator River, but are now also keeping a keen eye out in Cooinda after recent sightings. With the female having similar plumage to the male, this dove is not easy to see among the foliage, and is more often heard than seen. It makes a series of loud, long ‘whu-whoo’ calls, becoming faster and sounding monkeylike. The dove is mainly found in sub-tropical and dry rainforest and occasionally in moist
eucalypt and swamp forests, where fruit is plentiful. They feed entirely on fruit and are thought to be locally nomadic as they follow the ripening of fruits. They play a vital role in seed dispersal and rainforest regeneration. The female lays a single glossy white egg on a very flimsy dish of thin twigs and both sexes share the raising of the chick. Fuel on the fire at Budget Estimates about petrol expenditure THE Northern Territory Opposition government have questioned embattled CLP politician Larissa Lee, the Member for Arnhem, over the large amounts she has spent on fuel. In a session of Budget Estimates last week in Darwin, it was revealed Ms Lee had claimed $14,402 in fuel costs from her election until
March 31 this year. Opposition leader Delia Lawrie said the Member for Arnhem used her taxpayer funded fuel card at a rate that equates to $66 a day, every single day for 217 days in a row. “Taxpayers are coughing up $464 every week just to fill up her car?
“No other Member of Parliament even comes close, including those with similarly large electorates. “The neighbouring bush seat of Stuart only incurred $2414 in fuel expenses for the same period.” The Opposition said Ms Lee has previously

Photos: Matt Garrick and Graham Hughes IT was a fitting finale to a thrilling weekend of footy on Hindle Oval Two; Galiwin’ku verses Maningrida in the Grand Final of the inaugural East Arnhem Football carnival. Both teams were hungry for the win; Galiwin’ku’s squad, the Giants, had travelled the distance in four charter planes just to play, while Maningrida’s side the All-Stars had driven the dirt track squashed into two troopies from the other side of Arnhem Land. They’d beaten out other worthy Arnhem opponents to get to the top, including Groote Eylandt, Gapuwiyak, Yirrkala and Ski Beach.
It looked like Maningrida had the magic to take the win, until Galiwin’ku rallied for a spectacular comeback in the last two quarters. Yirrkala were only just nudged out from the Grand Final, after scoring a memorable win over Ski Beach for their last game of the carnival which put them in third place. Ski Beach finished in fourth place, followed close behind by Gapuwiyak at fifth and Groote Eylandt at six. Indigenous Programs Manager for AFL NT Kevin Bruce said the alcoholfree event was a great vehicle for promoting important life skills. “Footy is one of the big motivators for Indigenous people in the region. “Everyone back in the communities

were so keen to find out which league was named the best.” And the good news of who won was taken back to the Elcho Island community of Galiwin’ku, where 70 per cent of the community, including women and children, are involved in footy. Regional Development Manager and player for the Galiwin’ku Giants Tayo Cafarella said the win was incredibly important for the whole community. “This just raises everyone’s spirits, and it was a great opportunity for our players to have a trip off the island. “One of the players had never been
out before in his life.” Tayo said they’d picked a young squad this year, with some players around 16 and 17 years old, and had had to whittle the team down from about 400 candidates. Golfers still chipper under tough conditions WINDY conditions greeted golfers at the Gulf Gove Open on June 8-10, but they couldn’t stop 11-year-old Katelyn Rika beating 92 competitors to win the event. The Toll Marine Logistics 54 hole Gulf Gove Amateur Open was held at the Gove Country Golf Club, and attracted competitors from across the NT, Queensland and Western Australia. Visiting competitors represented golf clubs from Alyangula on Groote Eylandt, Darwin, RAAF in Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Paradise
Palms, Mandurah, Gordonvale and Woodford. Gove Country Golf Club President Donna-Marie Grieve said it was a great turn out with many new and old faces. “Congratulations to all who finished the three-day competition, as conditions were not as favourable as some of us would’ve liked.” This year’s Gulf Open Champion, the young star Ms Rika, took everyone by surprise with a 10-shot lead, scoring a nett win of 205. “It was a very special honour
presenting the Gove Open Cup to Katelyn Rika; our up-and-coming junior champion. “Well done and well-deserved,” said Ms Grieve. “On behalf of the President, Manager and Committee, thank you to our volunteers and sponsors who have contributed to the success of this event.” This included major sponsor Toll Marine Logistics and minor sponsors, Gove Rentals, Big Carpentry, Giovenco, Pump Technology Services, Dean Troughear, Oamps and GIS.
Gove Country Golf Club also put a big thank you to all the golfers for putting on a great show, and to all the volunteers: grounds people, green-keeper, spotters, committee members, bar staff, The Waterfront Kitchen, Gove Junior Golf parents and dedicated manager, Jamie Henderson.
