Community reacts with anger to NT Government backflip on Gas2Gove
By MATT GARRICK
NHULUNBUY residents have expressed their disappointment with the current government for reneging on a gas deal which was proposed in February. Pictured here are Nhulunbuy Newsagency co-owner Judy Carter and colleague Catherine Morar, who vocalised their disapproval with a sign of the times.
Deputy Chief Minister David Tollner faces the scrutiny of the media at Ski Beach.
GOVE community has reacted with anger to a NT Government announcement that there was never a signed Gas-to-Gove agreement and the previous deal is now off the table. And they are demanding answers - and immediately. Locals have said that they have had enough of shallow promises by governments who have failed to materialise any certainty in getting Gas-to-Gove, and don’t want to go through the stress all over again. Chief Minister Adam Giles’s office released a statement last Friday which said a new “winwin” deal was now on offer to Pacific Aluminium which slashed the amount of the previously promised gas. The original proposal put forward by Pacific Aluminium involved the Territory giving up 25PJ of gas per year for 12 years, totalling 300PJ. Under the planned new model, the Territory Government would sell Pacific Aluminium 13PJ of gas per year for up to 15 years, totalling 195PJ. Chamber of Commerce President David Suter said the business community want concrete answers now. “We want answers now, and
I would urge Pacific Aluminium and the current NT Government to get together as soon as they possibly can.” Chief Executive Officer of YBE Glenn Aitchison said the regional community has at best been treated with contempt. “It is time for genuine shared and visionary leadership that looks to sustain the now, builds for tomorrow and future proofs the territory and its regions.” Co-owner of Nhulunbuy Newsagency Judy Carter said it was a stressful time for all people in town who have been through it already. “Not just for the refinery workers, but for people who have investments here and have had them here for a very long time. “We’ve already gone through it, and it impacted on everybody’s business. “It’s very difficult to have to go through this again. “Our fate is out of our hands; its in the hands of Rio and the government.” Mr Suter said the business community don’t want to go through the stress and strain of the pre-Christmas issue again. “People are very tired and very concerned.” A community meeting was held on Monday afternoon at

the Walkabout, attended by Deputy Chief Minister David Tollner, who said he planned to deliver the people a good news announcement. “This is about jobs in Nhulunbuy; this is about regional development and seeing people get a go like they do in any other part of the country.” A press conference was held in Gove on Monday, featuring members of the NT Government and the head of Pacific Aluminium’s Gove Operations
Ryan Cavanagh. Mr Cavanagh said Pacific Aluminium were disappointed with the announcement. “It creates uncertainty for our employees, which we are trying to manage at the moment, and it creates uncertainty for everyone in the community. “We’re just keen on resolving that uncertainty and getting a long-term energy efficient solution for Gove.” Continued Page 2 >>

When asked if Nhulunbuy residents had been treated as political pawns by the Northern Territory Government over the gas issue, Ms MacFarlane said she didn’t think people had been used. “I feel that it was always going to be subject to due diligence, and that’s normal

business, and in normal business that’s just carried out. “Due diligence was completed and an announcement carried out, I don’t believe there was ever any intention to mislead anyone.” Mislead or not, the people of Gove have been thrown into uncertainty
once again. Pacific Aluminium and the Northern Territory Government will now try to work out a solution to keep Nhulunbuy’s refinery open, with no promised deadlines other than maybe after the Federal election. The Federal election date has yet to be announced.
How the new deal went down IN the middle of Darwin Show Day, Chief Minister Adam Giles released a bombshell - there was a new deal for Gas-to-Gove. “We are talking to Pacific Aluminium about them using a dual fuel option that would see the Gove Alumina refinery operate on a combination of heavy fuel oil and natural gas for 15 years. “We understand the importance of the refinery to the local com-
munity and the Territory economy and we are confident this is a better, longer-term solution for the town offering a 15 year energy solution, instead of 12.” Mr Giles said the original proposal by Pacific Aluminium was always conditional on a rigorous due diligence process. “Unfortunately the results have revealed unacceptable risk to the NT economy and taxpayers,” Mr
Giles said. Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker has said the government were playing games and putting politics before the people of Gove. “The continued claims from Adam Giles that no deal was ever done are arrogant and dishonest. “It is completely insensitive to the people of Gove who were guaranteed that a deal was done.”
Gove pharmacy assistant to represent NT A NHULUNBUY pharmacy assistant has been chosen to represent the NT in the National Pharmacy Assistant of the Year Award, in part due to her “gentle and caring demeanor”. Shenayde Martin will head to Queensland in October, to have a crack at winning the Pharmacy Guild of Australia/GSK National Pharmacy Assistant of the Year Award 2013. Ms Martin, who is employed by Gove Amcal Pharmacy, was selected from a field of eight finalists in Darwin last Tuesday. She beat out finalists from Palmerston, Alice Springs and Darwin. Owner of Gove Amcal Pharmacy Darryl Stewart said it was great to see Shenayde had been recognised for all the hard work she’d done. “We’re very proud of her, she’s worked immensely hard to be where she is.” The judging panel noted Shenayde’s enthusiasm for her

Manhunt after 18-year-old escapes custody including two four-wheel-drives, three iPhones, mobile phones, wallets and cash, as well as a $2000 mountain bike, a bottle of bourbon and a packet of cigarettes. Nine victims reported crimes relating to theft or trespassing over the night. Just after 9am on Tuesday, Mr Robertson was found sleeping inside a gold Toyota LandCruiser that had been reported stolen the night prior. He was arrested and taken to the police station, where the next day he participated in a police interview. Mr Robertson admitted he had been sniffing paint and drinking alcohol over the night of the spree, and couldn’t recollect the allegations put before him. He was later charged and remanded in custody, before being flown back to Darwin, where he will appear in the Magistrate’s Court on July 29. Senior Sergeant Erica Sims said catching Mr Robertson was a resource intensive job, but police were happy to have a successful outcome. “All praise to the efforts of the officers in recapturing the alleged offender.” She urged residents to always be vigilant in ensuring their property was safe and secure.

NOTE:
A ONE-MAN crime spree hit Gove last week, after 18-year-old Eric Robertson allegedly escaped police custody and went on the run. Mr Robertson was in the region to undertake a 12-week rehabilitation program, as part of his parole conditions from previous break and enter charges in Darwin. On July 19, he walked out of Nhulunbuy’s rehabilitation facility, sparking a police hunt to locate his whereabouts. In the early hours of Monday morning, Mr Robertson was discovered sleeping in a tent at Ski Beach, and was arrested for breaching parole. He was taken to Nhulunbuy Police Station. At around 1.20am, the alleged offender was being escorted by police officers from their vehicle to the entrance of the watch house. Two metres from the entrance, he turned and without warning bolted to the front gates, which he managed to scramble over and escape into the night. A police manhunt for the escapee then ensued, as the alleged offender began to leave a trail of crimes around the township. Between 1.30am Monday, July 22 and 9.16am Tuesday, July 23, numerous thefts were reported

BUFFALO posing a danger in and around Gove have been culled recently in the town lease area. Dhimurru have culled three buffalo in the past two weeks, in and around the town lease. Chief Executive Officer Steve Roeger said they had some difficulties disposing of one of them near Galuru. “We would like to thank people using the area for their patience while we got it sorted.” Dhimurru works closely with Police, Parks and Wildlife, and the Nhulunbuy Corporation to opportunistically cull buffalo found around built-up areas. In such instances, every effort is made to remove them safely, quickly, and humanely. Apart from its own patrols,
Dhimurru relies on alerts from members of the public and urges anyone who encounters a buffalo to call their office and/or after hours number (8939 2700) or (0408 512 589). Please call immediately or as soon after the event as possible, to help maximise their chances of intercepting the buffalo. It’s a good idea to ring the police as well, particularly if you think the buffalo poses an immediate or imminent threat (8987 1333). Buffalo are extremely dangerous and should not be approached under any circumstances. They are a wild animal, they can be aggressive, and they are often unpredictable. It is a fact that more people have been killed and injured by buffalo on
the Gove Peninsula in the past 25 years than by crocodiles. Buffaloes are feral animals and have a significant impact on the environment. Even one buffalo can do a lot of damage, as they wallow in water holes and trample vegetation. Dhimurru also undertakes regular culling operations throughout its management area. If you would like more information and to keep up to date on sightings please contact Dhimurru or go to Dhimurru’s facebook page.
How to deal with the buffalo threat In order to minimise your chances of having an uncomfortable interaction with buffalo, Dhimurru has provided the following recommendations: 1. Be extra careful at dawn and dusk when buffalo are at their most active. 2. If you are out walking, it is best to be noisy, as buffalo are less likely to attack if they have heard you coming and have the option of moving away. 3. Buffalo have a strong and distinctive odour and often you will smell them before you see them. Use your nose and try to organise your walk so that you have the breeze in front of you if you can. 4. Walking in the town area and with other people around will be safer than walking alone and in the bush.
5. Keep your eyes peeled as buffalo are surprisingly hard to see until they make a move. 6. Keep your dog(s) in close control. 7. As you’re walking keep an eye out for big trees where you can take refuge if you need to hide behind one. If you are unlucky enough to encounter a buffalo, try to stay calm; keep your eyes on it, and start backing away quietly. Do not let your dog chase the buffalo; keep it under as tight control as you can without multiplying your own exposure. If the buffalo charges then try to get behind a tree or other obstacle as quickly as possible. If you take reasonable precautions when you’re out and about you will be just fine, just don’t take buffalo for granted and stay well clear.
Four days of peace, love and damper << From Page 3 A Lifetime Experience Yothu Yindi Foundation Senior Cultural Advisor Djunga Djunga Yunupingu said Garma was the perfect opportunity to open up dialogue between Yolngu and Balanda. “We’re doing this for the future generations. “So when they grow up they can still stand on their own two feet, firm and on common ground.”

RELAY FOR LIFE
Yarn Bomber strikes again GOVEITES might have wandered into Endeavour Square last Tuesday morning and noticed things a little more colourful. The town’s elusive Yarn Bomber has struck again; this time crocheting the town’s clock tower (left) to kingdom come. (Yarn Bombing is a type of street art that uses colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn rather than paint or chalk). The pretty design of rainbows and stars has been stitched up there in the name of Relay for Life, an event happening in Nhulunbuy on August 17 and 18, to raise money for cancer research. The Arafura Times puts out a challenge to the Yarn Bomber; if you reveal yourself for an interview and photo, we will donate $200 towards Relay for Life. Testing your limits for cancer research FOR once in a lifetime, Gove residents can blow over the limit on a breathalyser, and only have to pay a gold coin donation. Nhulunbuy Police are putting the fun back in fundraiser, when they attend local clubs and pubs this Thursday, August 1, and offer breathalyser tests to members of the public to raise some cash for Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a nation-wide event held to raise money for cancer research, and it will be happening in Nhulunbuy on August 17 and 18. More than 20 teams will be participating in Relay for Life, where they will try to keep a team baton moving around Hindle Oval continuously over 18 hours. The police team, The Thin Blue Line, have come up with this unique idea to raise funds for the cause, carrying one or two breathalysers around local pubs for locals to try and guess their reading. A police spokesman has said that a card will be issued stating that the reading will only be an indication, and is not to be used in making a decision to drive a motor vehicle. “This is a unique way to carry out fundraising and one way that will increase community engagement by police.” The Thin Blue Line also have a jellybean jar competition going, so pop into Nhulunbuy Police Station, have a crack at guessing how many there are and donate generously for a deserving cause.

NEWS NORFORCE’s Arnhem Squadron left Nhulunbuy in mid-July for a two-week patrol along the coast of Arnhem Land and the islands to the north. The men and women embarked from the Perkins boat ramp aboard a Landing Craft on July 16. They conducted six-man patrols in Zodiacs and tinnies throughout the islands. Groups of soldiers also set up land-based observation posts. Officer Commanding Arnhem Squadron Major Tim Robinson said the soldiers were drawn from throughout East Arnhem Land and beyond. “They are modern warriors protecting country.” The patrol was part of the Australian Army’s contribution to the government’s effort in protecting Australia’s borders and offshore maritime interests. NORFORCE soldiers were looking for signs of any illegal or unusual activity on the islands. If they find something, they report it to the relevant agency, such as the NT or Federal Police, Australian Quarantine Service, or the local rangers. The soldiers are armed with semi-automatic rifles - the F88 Austeyr - mainly to protect themselves against unfriendly wildlife, like buffaloes or saltwater crocodiles. They don’t use them for hunting, but they are allowed to make traditional weapons to help supplement their rations. NORFORCE was established in 1981 to protect Australian sovereignty in the remote regions of northern Australia. It conducts surveillance and reconnaissance patrols across the Northern Territory and Kimberley region of Western Australia as part of multi-agency border protection operations. Its 600 soldiers include 540 Reservists, half of whom are Indigenous men and women from remote communities who bring to the Australian Army their traditional knowledge and networks. Around 80 per cent of Arnhem Squadron’s soldiers are Indigenous. BELOW: Arnhem Squadron soldiers Vinnie Rami, Danny Daniels and Jonah Thingle cleaning their weapons.

LOCAL publican John Tourish (right) has been selected to represent Nhulunbuy on a new Business Advisory Council that will help frame policy and provide a voice for the Northern Territory business community. Responsibilities of the council will include advising the minister on issues such as business reform, reducing regulations and red tape, the latter of which Mr Tourish has said was high on his agenda. The independent advisory body is made up of 11 members, and will be chaired by the Anglican Bishop of the Northern Territory, Greg Thompson. Minister for Business David Tollner appointed the new council, that he said would provide policy direction and be able to advise on the services provided by the Department of Business. Mr Tourish, owner of Gove and Beyond Pty Ltd and publican of the Walkabout, was selected partly due to his “solid background in tourism and hospitality”. Local MLA Lynne Walker recently said
she was pleased to see Mr Tourish would be representing the region. “John brings with him a wealth of knowledge and business acumen, and is a former chair of the East Arnhem Regional Economic Development Committee.” The East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce also voiced their approval of Mr Tourish representing the region’s business sector on a Territory-wide level.
NORTHERN Territory Treasurer David Tollner has offered to send a DVD of the 2013-14 Budget to Nhulunbuy, in lieu of him being here to give a budget presentation himself. In a response to a recent request by local MLA Lynne Walker asking him to bring budget presentations to rural hubs including Gove, Mr Tollner said an unhealthy level of debt prevented the government from doing so. “The CLP Government has been saddled with an unhealthy level of debt from the former Labor Government and this has led to cost-cutting measures in a number of areas, including regional budget presentations in smaller communities. “I am happy to forward the DVD of the 2013-14 Budget, to make available to the people of Nhulunbuy.” Ms Walker said bringing budget presentations to Nhulunbuy would be affordable. “The exercise, for what was always a
day trip, would have cost the price of three airfares ($2100 total - Treasurer and two public servants) plus catering for 40 people at $15 per head. $2700 all up - peanuts in the scheme of things.” Recently installed Business Advisory Council Member and local publican John Tourish said he can’t see the value in bringing the budget roadshow to Gove. “We’ve had previous treasurers bring the budget presentations here, and they have been reasonably well-attended, but I don’t think there’s much value in them. “Those roadshows are lovely if you’ve got something to announce to us out here, but I don’t think there’s anything particularly fantastic for us in this year’s budget anyway. “There are a lot of things which could be brought out here other than the budget.” Mr Tollner did visit Gove this week, on Monday, July 29, on a non-budget related trip, to try to keep locals updated on progress with getting gas to the town.

letters to the editor/comment CLP Government betrays Gove CHIEF Minister Adam Giles’ announcement last Friday that the Gas-toGove deal committed to by his government in February was off and that a new “exciting” offer is on the table is as destructive as it is dishonest. This is pure politics from an incredibly ambitious, amateur and arrogant politician who was sworn into Territory parliament on the same day as me in 2008. Adam Giles’ bid to embroil the Federal Labor government in a stoush with a Federal election just around the corner smacks
of a political fix which is unforgivable. Clearly he is out of his depth and not to be trusted. Our community is literally in a state of shock and disbelief that a deal with one of the world’s largest multi-nationals to secure a commercial deal to convert the Gove Operations energy source form heavy fuel oil to gas no longer stands because the CLP government has done a political backflip. What is abundantly clear to me since this shocking news was announced, and on a public holiday, is that people in
this region - from kids, to business people, to company workers, to traditional owners - are furious and feel they are being treated as political pawns. It’s a very valid reaction! Consequently, Gove is now back where it was in January. Plunged back into uncertainty and anxiety about what the future holds. On the strength of the certainty of the deal secured by former Chief Minister Terry Mills with Pacific Aluminium in February, individuals, families
and local businesses have made decisions about their lives, livelihoods and financial investments which are now all at serious risk. Let’s be very clear about one thing. The Commonwealth has committed to support the pipeline which Pacific Aluminium will fund and construct - but only if the NT Government provides the gas they promised. Gas which will be sold at a commercial rate, not at taxpayers’ expense, and nor with any risk to the Territory’s future energy needs. Adam Giles must be

days like these in East Arnhem Land LIVING in remote East Arnhem Land, we are often at the mercy of Mother Nature. When heading out camping, fishing, sailing
or hunting, mishaps can and do happen, and like true Territorians, when they do people try and take them with a smile and a sense of humour.
Here a couple of recent doozies where those affected found this principal is sometimes easier said than done.

A CREW of sailors were at the mercy of the tides last week, stuck in Gove after their yacht became grounded in shallow water. The captain of the yacht, Robert Burns, apparently misjudged the water depth, trying to bring the boat in to tie it to mooring poles, when it ran aground and tipped far to the right. Crewed by a bunch of backpackers, the yacht was on its way from Darwin to Cairns, and just hoping to stop briefly in Gove to

Countdown on for Telstra Awards GANGAN artist Yumutjin Munungmurra has had his work shown across the world, from London to China and beyond. Now he’s up for the main $40,000 prize in the country’s prestigious 30th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, to be announced in Darwin on August 9. Yirrkala Art Centre artist Mr Munungmurra is up for the prize for his bark painting entry, entitled Gangan to Baraltja. His painting depicts the flow of water between the mangroves and sand banks, manifesting the lightening snake. Yumutjin practices his art with a precise manner, with particular emphasis on spiritual and intellectual elements rather than aesthetics. The new curator of the awards, former Gove resident Allison Thatcher praised the 77 artists shortlisted for this year’s exhibition, stating that this year’s awards have attracted high quality artworks across a range of mediums.
“The Telstra Art Award is a great opportunity for Indigenous Australians to express and celebrate their culture, beliefs and society,” Ms Thatcher said. Finalists are in the running for six awards; the $40,000 Telstra Art Award, and five $4000 category awards; the Telstra General Painting Award, Telstra Bark Painting Award, Telstra Work on Paper Award, Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award and the Telstra New Media Award. Beard-to-beard: Allen Ginsberg meets Wandjuk Marika IN 1972, a rare and rather weird meeting occurred, between a famous American poet and a senior tribal man of the Rirratjingu clan. Author of 1950s literary classic Howl, Allen Ginsberg, travelled to Yirrkala where he managed to get involved in one of the great expressions of Yolngu culture, as writer Shane Maloney explains.
ABC DIGITAL TV STARTS ON GROOTE EYLANDT The Australian Broadcasting Corporation advises that it will start broadcasting its new terrestrial digital TV service on Groote Eylandt on 1 August on VHF channel 7. At the same time the ABC’s analog TV service will be switched off. If you are watching ABC TV through terrestrial signals and live on Groote Eylandt, you will require a digital TV or digital set-top box to continue to watch ABC TV from 1 August.
This article originally was published in, and re-published here, with permission from The Monthly, May, 2010. ALLEN Ginsberg saw the best minds of his generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the streets at dawn looking for an angry fix. Then he went to the Northern Territory. There, on a rainy evening in April, 1972, the nudist, Buddhist, New York Jewish Beat poet came beard-to-beard with a man with 100 names, the ritual leader of the Rirratjingu clan of northeastern Arnhem Land. Ginsberg was bound for India, by way of the Adelaide Arts Festival. Since arriving in Australia, he’d been itching to hear Aboriginal music in its cultural context. Equipped with Tibetan finger cymbals and a pair of clapsticks, he flew to Nhulunbuy and headed south. The object of his journey was Wandjuk Marika, the famous song man, painter and cultural ambassador. Reaching Yirrkala at dusk, the hipster bard found a funeral in progress. As his clan’s mortuary man, Wandjuk was responsible for the correct
conduct of the ceremony. He told the balding American - a man whose name meant nothing to him - that he was welcome to stay and observe. “Our funerals are as public as yours.” Ginsberg probably did not realise it, but he had stumbled upon one of the great expressions of Yolngu culture. Extending over a period of days, burial rites bring together a range of arts - coffin painting and body art, regalia of feathers and string, powerful dancing and sacred song cycles. Sitting quietly on the sidelines in the darkness, Ginsberg hummed along with the didgeridoo chorus. The next morning, rain pelting down, Wandjuk and Ginsberg huddled in a hut on the beach at Yalangbara, the site where the ancestral beings first landed on the mainland of Australia. Wandjuk had been singing all night. His voice was almost gone. He was exhausted. It was Ginsberg’s turn. G i n s b e rg c h a n t e d “Hare Krishna” and tinkled his finger bells.

Artwork by Chris Grosz. He made no mention of Kaddish. To Wandjuk’s amusement, he sang a song in Pitjanjatjara, which he had memorised. That afternoon, he returned to Darwin and departed for the Ganges. His subsequent published writings make no mention of Australia. The following year, Wandjuk Marika helped establish the Aboriginal Arts Board. In 1984, he played a leading role in Werner Herzog’s cinematic mishmash Where Green Ants Dream, an experience that left him angry and disappointed. When he found his designs printed on tea towels, he stopped painting for ten years. He died in 1987, aged 60, of undetermined causes. Ginsberg died 10 years later, burning, perhaps, for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night.

Grace Knight, who rose to fame in the 1980s as lead singer of the Eurogliders, now travels the country with her jazz combo, playing new spins on old favourites. The audience was lulled with incredible jazzy renditions of songs by Patsy Cline and Hank Williams, and kept amused by the singer’s witty anecdotes. Everyone erupted in cheers when in her encore she performed big hit by the Eurogliders, Heaven (Must Be There). The evening was opened by local band Leash and the Dusty Boots, who were backed by a spectacular sunset over the Arafura Sea.

Family and friends paid tribute to a man described as “a champion among men”, “gorgeous” and a “dynamic and dedicated loving father”.
Peter’s cousin Gerry McCue said he had lost one of the big constants in his life. “Now it will be like looking up at the diamond of the Southern Cross, and seeing one of the stars is missing.” Peter grew up in Brisbane, and,
after working and travelling for a few years, gained employment in Gove in 1981. In 1988 he established KP Carpentry in Gove with his wife Kathy. His family wrote in a memorial program that Peter was the epitome of the Gove lifestyle.

Land-owners take battle to Sydney
FOR months, U.S. oil and gas company Paltar Petroleum appears to have ignored the protests of a group of Arnhem Land traditional owners asking them not to mine their land. The company could ignore them no more, after the land-owners travelled to Sydney to set-up shop outside the firm’s Australian headquarters. The group performed traditional dances and songs outside Paltar’s office in Sydney’s Martin Place on July 19, to help bring attention to their mission. In February this year, traditional owner Eddie Mason appeared on Page 1 of Arafura Times, after he voiced his anger and concerns about mining and gas exploration on his country at a public meeting in Darwin. Mr Mason’s Homelands lie out near the community of Milingimbi, in the remote Crocodile Islands. He was one of five traditional owners who visited Sydney. While there he talked of how mining exploration will destroy his country. “All of these blackfellas all around Arnhem Land will be starving because that’s their natural tucker, that’s their

Hoax emails threat WITH hoax emails claiming to be from high profile brands becoming increasingly common and sophisticated, Telstra is warning Gove residents to be wary of the latest string of emails asking for sensitive or personal information. Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager for the NT Brian O’Keefe said Telstra has received several reports from customers concerned about these emails, which in some cases requested customers to enter personal information into a malicious website. The frequency of hoaxes is also growing and it’s estimated that each year billions of hoax emails are sent around the world, designed to target customers of various brands and services. Mr O’Keefe said hoaxes often evoke a sense of urgency to catch customers off-guard and that there were some common types of email hoaxes customers should watch out for. There are a few key things customers should remember if they believe they’ve received a hoax email. Former Origin Greats are helping kick career goals Words and Photos By ALF WILSON ARNHEM Land youths learnt how to kick goals in their careers last week, from former State of Origin greats including legendary half-back, Allan ‘Alfie’ Langer. Eleven students from Arnhem Land attended the fifth FOGS (Former Origin Greats) Careers and Employment Expo in Townsville on July 23. FOGS who were there inspiring students to gain a good career included Gene Miles, Greg Dowling, Colin Scott, Sam Backo, Steve Price, Gary Belcher, Steve Renouf and Allan Langer. The event featured a diverse range of prominent Queensland employment, education and training providers with exhibits on mining and construction, business, hospitality as well as government and health. The Arafura Times was there and spoke to five of the Elcho Island youths who were boarders at Shalom Christian College in Townsville. Merryl Nyikalawuy, 19, Troy Wunungmurra, 19, Merinda Gondarra, 18, Andrea Dhurrkay, 17, and Bethany Gondarra, 16, all said they got to check out potential careers. “Myself and Troy are looking at becoming mechanics,” Merryl said.
Gaining such a job would enable the pair to return home and seek permanent employment. Merinda said she would love to become a teacher whilst Andrea had her mind set on working for Centrelink. Bethany said she would like to get a job as a nurse which would also allow her to find work in Arnhem Land. Merinda, Andrea and Bethany were delighted to have their pic taken with FOGS Greg Dowling, Colin Scott and Alfie Langer. FOGS media coordinator Lucy Cooper said the expo was focused on building the aspirations of local Indigenous school leavers and mature-aged job seekers. “It aims to assist them into career pathways, employment opportunities and training placements,” Ms Cooper said. FOGS executive chairman Gene Miles said since the inception of FOGS expos in 2008, these events have presented an array of employment and training opportunities for attendees across the state. “(It allows) individuals to talk to real people who can provide guidance and an idea or direction for their future,” Mr Miles said. More than 55 exhibits provided information at the expo, including Bechtel, Woolworths, Aurizon, Defence Force Recruiting and Holiday Inn to name a few.
MEETING THE GREATS: Merinda Gondarra, Andrea Dhurrkay and Bethany Gondarra at the Expo with former State-of-Origin greats Greg Dowling, Colin Scott and Allan Langer. LOOKING TOWARDS TOMORROW: Merryl Nyikalawuy, Troy Wunumurra, Merinda Gondarra, Andrea Dhurrkay and Bethany Gondarra at the Expo.

School’s back, and so are sports vouchers
AS GOVE school students get stuck into the new school term, parents have been reminded to redeem their Sport Vouchers for the second half of the school year. The Vouchers can be redeemed right up until November 30.

Another change on top of NRL leaderboard
ONLY Graham Hughes could manage all seven winners after the weekend’s games in round 20 of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL footy tipping competition. A further eight were on the ball with six winners - Luke Cole, broccoli, Tanya Hoffman, Kaffir, Shaun Dennis, Travis Dehnert, Marlinman and Malkzok1. Monday night’s game between the Tigers and the Sea Eagles was not completed by the time the Arafura Times went to press, while others struggled with the Warriors’ victory against the Storm. Most tipsters got off to a poor start with the Broncos’ win against the Cowboys on Friday night, with only Graham Hughes, Luke Cole, Tanya Hoffman, Forbsey, Waggy, KaRon1 and
Morgstar on the winner. There has been a change on the top of the leaderboard with Kaffir (6) taking sole ownership of top spot with 105, but the field behind Kaffir is very congested. Andres Hoffman (5) and Marlinman (6) are both on 104, with one further back to Graham Hughes (7) on 103. Wayno (5) is on 101, with Malkzok1 (6) on 100. 99: Jez (5), doodlesuckernobagchc (5). 98: Putty (5), Travis Dehnert (6). 97: Halwes (5). 96: grimmus8u (3), Killer (4), Tanya Hoffman (6). 95: Jeremy 4X (2), VanDam (4), Broccoli (6), Luke Cole (6). 92: Duggie (5). 91: Shaun Dennis (6). 90: aaron tilley (4), waggy (5). The winner of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL tipping competition wins $500.
Dogs bite tipsters PLEB has opened up a commanding four-win break after round 18 of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club AFL footy tipping competition on the weekend. No one got all nine winners correct, with crackers standing alone in tipping the Bulldogs to down the Eagles. Until that result there were 12 tipsters with seven from seven, and finally 13 finished with eight winners - pleb, Travis Dehnert, Woodsgal, Spudly, Jendj, Graham Hughes, David Gibson, Kaffir, Crackers, Aussie_Joe, Wayno, 43 and renae forbes. Pleb (8) sits commandingly on top with 121, four ahead of hayden4x (7), crackers (8) and David Gibson (8) on 117.
Darren Nunn took a hit to get five to be on 116 where he is joined by Waggy (6). 115: Duggie (7). 114: Travis Dehnert (8), Kaffir (8), Aussie Joe (8). 113: Woodsgal (8), Wayno (8), Forbesy (7). 112: Tanya Hoffman (7), WestAussieGirl136 (6). 110: Spudly (8). 109: Jeremy 4X (7), Marlinman (7). 108: Andres Hoffman (7), Jendj (8), 107: 43 (8), KaRon1 (7), Dobbo (7), Maggie May (7). 106: Graham Hughes (8). 105: Agron (5). 104: Tracey xxxx (5). Celebrating 70 years - Elder looks back over an extraordinary life
Laklak Marika - the first Yolngu born in Yirrkala. As told to TRACEY PATTERSON by LAKLAK MARIKA at modern day Beach Camp in shelters I AM a senior Rirratjingu woman. On June 30, 2013, I celebrated they built themselves. Everyone lived together and shared my 70th birthday at Banu Banu, on everything. Bremer Island. But I was born where the modern I was the first Yolngu born in day boat ramp in Yirrkala is now Yirrkala in the Northern Territory. White settlers and missionaries located. My mother had left beach camp hadn’t been in the region long, World War Two was underway and the and walked up to the boat ramp site Mission in Yirrkala had only just been to give birth by herself. My grandmother - my father’s established. The first missionaries were Fijian, mother - followed the footsteps from and they were busy clearing the land the camp and found me already born. My grandmother cut the umbilical in Yirrkala ready to build the first cord and cleaned me up, then carried mission houses. Back in 1943, Yolngu lived down me back to beach camp and introduced
me to my father, Mawalan. My father was a senior Rirritjingu and one of the five brothers who stood up against the mining company and fought for land rights. He had two wives and I was raised by both until I was five years old. Yindhirra was my mother and I had four siblings from her and two from my other mother. We all lived together under the big fig tree at beach camp. My other mother died when she was about 50. This was very sad for everyone especially me, because she had raised me in my early years. My proper mother, Yindhirra, took over raising the children from then on. I remember as a child playing with my brothers and sisters at beach camp. Once we were a little older though, girls would play by themselves and so would the boys. I remember as a child my father would sit me in his lap and he would call his brothers to (open) ceremony. It was unusual for a child to be part of this, but my father loved me very much and so did all my uncles. The men would sit singing and talking as I lay in my father’s lap. I would listen and learn. This was how I learnt so much about ceremony and my culture. In those days, no one moved around much. Men hunted and fished, women collected yams, oysters and berries. I used to go hunting for turtles with my father. My brothers and I would paddle the canoe while my father caught the turtles. The men also caught crocodile down at Arnhem Bay. Everyone would go together, they would cut the crocodile up and the meat would be divided. The skins were sold to the mis-

Nguykal on the mark
PASS THE PARCEL: Nguykal gets it away in time. Nguykal player Daryl Lacey comes down with the ball behind him. Photos: GRAHAM HUGHES Victory just an arm’s reach away.
IT was another cracking afternoon of footy last Saturday. In the centre-piece match, Nguykal defeated Djarrak by 15 points at Town Oval.
Both teams are vying for a place in the GAFL Grand Final on September 28. Finals of the GAFL kick-off in the first week of September. Next weekend’s footy will get started Saturday, 12pm on Nhulunbuy’s Town Oval, then 2pm in Yirrkala.
Carnival attracts international/interstate players EARLY in July, competition players took to Gove’s tennis courts to try and land their share of $3000 prize money in the 2013 Kowhai Construction Gove Open Carnival. The carnival attracted players from Darwin, Brisbane, Tweed Heads and New Zealand; a first for the club to have an international player compete at the annual event. Approximately 90 athletes competed over the eight days, with the juniors playing the first four days. In the last four days, almost 50 players contested for the 2013 Kowhai Construction Gove Open titles in the seniors event. Alex stretches over Nick In the men’s social singles, Nick O’Callaghan and Alex Brennan were winners of their pools and played off in the final. Alex’s height and long arms made it difficult for Nick to get the ball past him and Alex went on to win 6-3.
Donna-Marie notches another win Catherine Jones and Donna-Marie Grieve made it into the ladies social singles final. It was a very close final for the ladies, with Donna-Marie that got up in the end taking the title 7-5. Young gun Eighteen-year-old young gun Joseph Gersbach, the Number 1 seed with a ranking of 157 in Australia, never dropped a game for the whole four days in the singles even taking the title from the New Zealand competitor Howard Ho, and winning the final 6-0, 6-0. The locals were hoping to at least have a win in the doubles, but the combination of Joe Gersbach and his coach Nick Hughes, proved to be too strong for all other competitors taking the final over local lads Christo Esterhuyse and Damian Butler in a 6-0, 6-3 final score. Not completely disappointed, the local guys were happy that they got those

Caitlyn had to play Mayer, her original coach in the final. Mayer knowing she could not beat Caitlyn, got excited when she broke serve in the first game, but it was short lived losing the first set 6-1. Big serves and hard hitting returns saw some great rallies, but Caitlyn was too strong for her old coach taking the second set 6-2.
