Mother’s plea:

‘Stop grog supply’ By MATT GARRICK SHE’S been woken in the dead of night by alcohol-fuelled rowdiness more times than she can remember, but now a young leader from Yirrkala and mother of two says enough is enough. 25-year-old Aboriginal liaison worker at Miwatj Health Melanie Herdman (pictured) has put out a heartfelt plea for residents to stop selling grog to people who don’t hold alcohol permits. A recent booze-fuelled argument outside her bedroom window at 3am was the catalyst for Ms Herdman to take to facebook with her plea.

Stop the votes GOVE got its vote on last Saturday, September 7, for the Federal Election. Although the race for the Northern Territory Seat of Lingiari came down to a close call between Labor and Liberal, minor parties including the Greens, Shooters and Fishers Party and First Nations Party all came out on the day. grog suppliers to try and understand the burdens that residents of dry communities such as Yirrkala and Ski Beach are forced to deal with when the rivers of alcohol are able to flow late into the night.

Please think about us people who have to deal with domestic violence, child abuse, abusive language and staying up all night listening to sh*t.

Her facebook post, which by last Friday afternoon had attracted over 100 ‘Likes’, urged people in town to think before supplying alcohol to non-permit holders. “Please think about us people who have to deal with domestic violence, child abuse, abusive language and staying up all night listening to sh*t,” she wrote. She used the social media site to urge

“These kind of things that happen at odd hours, they just keep us awake and we can’t function at work the next day,” Ms Herdman told Arafura Times. “It takes away all of that energy we could be putting into education - whether you work at the school, or have to get up and take your kids to the school - it affects everyone.” Continued Page 2 >>

‘Stop grog supply’ << From Page 1 She said grog suppliers don’t realise the schemes that drinkers without permits have in place to keep up their habits. “Before people go drinking at the pub, what they’ll do is ask people to buy grog for them, so they have grog for after they leave the pub. “So, when they get kicked out of the pub, or the pub closes, they will have grog there for after.” While punters from the pub may jump into a cab and go home to bed if they don’t have grog to swill after closing time, if they do have more booze to carry on drinking with,

alcohol obviously don’t have an understanding of what they are doing to these communities. “There is a reason these permits are in place - they assist in lowering the numbers of assaults, domestic violence and cases of abuse.” Ms Herdman said having grown up around family members who drank, she’d seen similar incidents like the argument outside her window happen throughout her life. “The stuff I said on facebook wasn’t just about what happened yesterday or the night before. “I’ve seen this stuff happening throughout my life, and a lot of people growing up in the communi-

ties have seen it too.” Ms Herdman, who hasn’t had a big drink since her eighteenth birthday, said there was a reason drinking bans were imposed on dry communities. “The main message I’m trying to get out there is that when people get supplied grog to go and drink in the community, they just carry on all night, not caring about everyone else. “And we have a right to be saying this kind of stuff.” Senior Sergeant Muldoon said if police find evidence of individuals supplying grog to people without permits, their own will be promptly revoked.

they’ll do so and disrupt the whole community, she said. “I don’t like judging people, but once the binging gets serious, it affects families, children and elders. “It really upsets me that people in the Nhulun region who have open permits just do it (supply grog) without thinking.” Nhulunbuy Police’s Officerin-Charge Brendan Muldoon said he completely agreed with Ms Herdman’s standpoint. “She’s absolutely correct. “It disrupts the community, and affects the other people who live there as well. “The people supplying the

LABOR looks to keep its grasp on the Northern Territory Seat of Lingiari, but only just. Hundreds of voters went to the polls in Nhulunbuy last Saturday, September 7, to pick their choice for Lingiari, which has been held by Warren Snowdon (above left) for Labor for the last 20 years. By time of publication, the count had still not been

completed due to the size of the electorate and the remoteness of many communities within it. But when counting closed late on Saturday night, Mr Snowdon was clutching a tight lead above the Country Liberals’ Tina MacFarlane (above right) by 51.62 per cent to 48.38 per cent. Mr Snowdon released a statement on Sunday saying he was “quietly confident”. “There are still votes to be counted, but we’re sitting pretty good at the moment.”

“Currently we are about 1300 in front. “It is possible we could be overtaken, but I think that is probably not going to happen,” he said. He said that the current 2.08 per cent swing against Labor in Lingiari was well below the national trend. On Monday morning, Ms MacFarlane told the Arafura Times she thought she was still in with a chance. “It’s not over until the fat lady sings,” she said. She said despite what happens with the result, she will be a richer person

for having taken a tilt for office. “It’s been amazing travelling the Territory and hearing the diversity of issues that are out there.” Labor also picked up a Senate seat in the Northern Territory, won by former hockey player Nova Peris. Ms Peris will now be the first Indigenous woman in the Australian senate. Also in the senate for the Northern Territory is the Country Liberals’ Nigel Scullion, who has held on to his seat for another term. It is expected Mr Scullion will now move into

the key cabinet portfolio of Indigenous Affairs for the new Tony Abbott led Liberal Coalition Government. Arafura Times tried to contact former Shadow Resource Minister Ian MacFarlane on the Liberal’s pre-election commitment on Gas2Gove, but Mr MacFarlane was “unavailable” for comment.

Finalists for the NT Paramedic of the Year Kym Harris and Natasha Schuman. OUR local paramedics are the ones who are always there if someone gets into strife, and now they’ve been recognised for their work looking after the region. Locals paramedic Natasha Schuman and student paramedic Kym Harris both made it as finalists for the 2013 NT Paramedic of the Year Award. The award, which was given at a ceremony in Darwin’s Parliament House on August 26, was won

by Darwin paramedic Amanda McNeill from a field of 27 outstanding paramedics nominated. NT Health Minister Robyn Lambley presented the award, and congratulated all the finalists for their efforts. “Our paramedics are often the first respondents when people are in need of urgent medical care. “They do a tremendous job providing urgent medical treatment wherever and whenever it

is needed. “I admire all of our paramedics for their consistent high level of performance in what is a challenging and high-pressure job,” she said. With only three paramedics based in Gove, Ms Schuman acknowledged the challenging task in their hands. “I don’t think you could do this job if you didn’t enjoy it. “We’re really lucky in Gove, as

we’re recognised quite a lot, and it’s a really good place to work.” Now in its 14th year, the awards, which were established by the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise, provide an opportunity to recognise paramedics who perform their duties to the highest standard. The awards acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of paramedics working across Nhulunbuy, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine and Darwin.

IGA aiming to repair consumer confidence IT’S been trying times for many Nhulunbuy businesses over the last year, and one company who has really felt the brunt of it is East Arnhem Trading - managers of the IGA supermarket. A change of management in the last months has spurred the company to try and change their business methods; a way to try and clean up a trail of debt around town, and renew consumer confidence in their business. New store managers Ken and Mel Joseph have already begun “price restructuring”, or lowering their prices, in an attempt to get more feet through the doors. East Arnhem Trading has been in financial difficulty for some time now, and as company director Peter Grundy said, business is tough. “We are not the first business in Nhulunbuy to get itself into financial difficulties. “I think all small businesses are under considerable pressure

in Nhulunbuy at the moment, as there is a distinct lack of consumer confidence.” For an independent supermarket like IGA, having a corporate giant like Woolworths in town has acted like a “neutron bomb” on business, he said. “We’ve got to compete with large corporate entities who dominate the Australian market. “They’re like a neutron bomb.” Mr Grundy said the issue of the refinery potentially closing down if gas does not come to Gove was of “grave concern to all small business operators”. Regardless, he said, management was quietly optimistic the company could repair confidence in its name and become more competitive. “We look forward to our focus on fresher food, quality and the re-establishment of our hardware store - because every town needs a good hardware store.”

New IGA store managers Ken and Mel Joseph want to see more feet come through their doors. Red tape slugs Homelands households LOCAL officials have branded a Homelands funding rollout as “overly bureaucratic,” after a deadline was reached with just a small percentage of NT Homelands households having applied for the funding. The first deadline for the Homelands Extra Allowance, which was announced in East Arnhem Land in May, has been extended, after low numbers of applications for the money were received by the NT government. A complex application process and process for being able to claim the money have been blamed. A $14mil. boost to Homelands was announced by NT Minister for Regional

Development Alison Anderson in May, planned to be rolled out over three years. The allowance aimed to supply individual Homelands households with funding of $5200 if they met certain criteria. The Department of Regional Development issued a statement to the Arafura Times last week, saying they had received approximately just 200 expressions of interest. “We have now commenced assessing applications. “To ensure as many eligible households have access to the Homelands Extra Allowance as possible, applications will be accepted beyond the August 31 deadline.” Local MLA and Shadow Minister for

Indigenous Policy Lynne Walker said there were around 10,000 Homelands and outstation dwellings across the NT. “Those applications which have been received will take awhile to process, to verify information provided by the applicant, including info regarding school attendance and proof of income. “That, and details of works requested that fall within the allocated $5200. “I think it’s a heavily over-bureaucratic system.” If each of the 200 expressions of interest for the funding are approved, it will cost the government just over $1m, a fall-short of nearly $13m from what was promised earlier this year.

A YOUNG Nhulunbuy band has headed to play at the Beat Festival in Darwin this week, after coming first in a big bush battle of the bands. The Vamp Festival was held in Gapuwiyak recently, featuring bands from schools in Milingimbi, Maningrida, Nhulunbuy, Numbulwar and Groote Eylandt. For several years, the NT School of Music has been organising teenage school bands to make the trip to Gapuwiyak to celebrate each others’ music as well as taking part in a big songwriting contest. Nhulunbuy High School band Good Question - who earlier in the year won the region’s heat of the NT Battle of the School Bands competition - took home gold at the festival. Band members Tayla Edwards, Alex Parfitt, Bulan Daly and Harry Walker wowed the judges with their musicianship and songwriting skills. NHS teacher Lawrence Walker said he and colleague Jenny Heath held their breath as the time grew near to announcing this year’s winners of $2500 towards their school’s music needs and a trip to Darwin for the Beat Festival. “Outstanding song Mr Wonderchild from Tayla Edwards on the theme of ‘wonder’ impressed the judges as well as the work

band members had put into their multi-media process diary. “Well done - we can only hope that events like these can continue to lift the profile and curriculumbased support of music in the lives and education of young people,” Mr Walker said. He also said tireless and patient work from the NT School of Music members Chris O’Neill, Todd Williams and Tim Webb went into producing an impressive schedule of intensive workshopping of the music and production of a music video for each of the bands. “The hard work culminated in a big concert on the Saturday evening in front of a large and appreciative

audience. “Thank you to the community of Gapuwiyak for their kindness and hospitality, and also thanks to Acting Principal Scott Fatnowma for his leadership”. Alongside Good Question, another local band, Landscape featuring NHS students Will and Declan Heath, Ned O’Dell and Morgan Hill - also played at this year’s festival. The annual Beat Festival, held from September 11-13, features over 1000 talented NT singers, dancers and musicians, and is a combined schools arts production showcasing the great work of NT schools.

12-month bond for causing traffic accident A 59-year-old driver found responsible On The for causing a head- Beat on collision on Melville Bay Road with walked away from court last week with NT a 12-month good Police behaviour bond. The court heard that the accident, which saw four people hospitalised early on the morning of August 5, was caused after the driver of a white utility “lost concentration” and drifted on to the wrong side of the road. The magistrate took into account the man’s good driving history, and no conviction was recorded or fine served up. Driver stuck between rock and hard place A DRINK-DRIVER convicted in court last week has had his driver’s licence stripped for five years. He was caught after he mounted a nature strip on Westal Street in Nhulunbuy, after leaving one of the town’s pubs, on August 18. While trying to dismount his vehicle from the nature strip, he repeatedly hit his car into a boulder, arousing the attention of police. He blew a high-range blood alcohol reading of 0.236, and was summonsed to appear in court. On September 4 the 46-year-old man was handed his half-decade disqualification, and was also slapped with a $600 fine for the offence. A number of drink-drivers also received their punishments in court last week, including a $400 fine for a 23-year-old woman who was caught while driving to the cafe for breakfast after a night out. Bicycle safety blitz POLICE have put out a warning that pushbike riders who are found not wearing a helmet or without a light will be slapped with an instant fine. They asked Gove residents to make sure they ride with both of these safety precautions in place, especially in the dark periods of early morning and night. A police spokesperson said while bike-riding might be a healthy pastime, there were still rules that remained in place.

Gove’s streaker gets three months’ jail FORMER Gove resident Wati Holmwood, who ran naked on to the field during the State of Origin rugby league decider in Sydney on July 17, has been sentenced to jail for three months. Mr Holmwood pleaded guilty to indecent exposure and running onto a playing field without authorisation. A NSW court heard that Mr Holmwood, who had been on a good behaviour bond for streaking at another NRL game last year, was due to be sentenced the week before last, but did not attend the hearing at Burwood Local Court. His lawyer told the court his client had limited intellect and was somewhat distanced from his family. Magistrate Christopher Longley sentenced him to three months jail for breaching two good behaviour bonds, as well as the charges relating to the State of Origin streak. The defence pushed for a suspended sentence, but the magistrate refused. Mr Holmwood, who was also fined $2000, has lodged an appeal. The New Zealand born 33-year-old has lived in Nhulunbuy, working for Rip Tinto, on and off since the year 2000.

POLICE are continuing investigations into a car which rolled over on a dirt track off Drimmie Head Road, near Gunyangara (Ski Beach), last Saturday, September 7. The car was by all accounts heading towards the Boat Club. It has been alleged that the car was driving at high speed when it spun out and rolled over. At this stage it has not been confirmed how many occupants were in the car or if anybody was injured.

Performers rock the red carpet at Deadlys

Could The Baddist be the best?

SOME of East Arnhem Land’s deadliest performers strutted their stuff down the red carpet at the Deadly Awards last night, Tuesday September 10, in Sydney. The awards, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements in music, sport, entertainment and the community, opened with a special rendition of Yothu Yindi’s hit song Mainstream. The song was performed by Rrawun Maymurru from East Journey, alongside long time Yothu Yindi collaborator Paul Kelly, Jodie Cockatoo-Creed (Yothu Yindi band member), singer Kutcha Edwards and world acclaimed didgeridoo player William Barton.

East Journey were also expected to take away the gong for Band of the Year. Dancer Milika Marika was also up for an award, for his work on dance project, Move It Mob Style. The Deadlys celebrated late Yothu Yindi singer Dr Yunupingu’s immense contribution to Aboriginal music and to Aboriginal affairs, Deadlys Executive Producer Gavin Jones said. “He was a break-out performer who shot to national and international fame and then used his fame, not for his own glory but for the advancement and benefit of the Yolngu people and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

skill-set. “You have to show-off your skill-set. “You have to be a good producer, scratcher, and what they call beat juggler; being able to manipulate two records to make different drum patterns. “And probably the biggest points come from landing stuff - you have to be clean on the day.” Will is set to go up against the other state finalists on the night, where four or five judges will give a verdict on each of their performances. For those who won’t make it to Melbourne for the competition, check out DJ Wil.K The Baddist every other Friday and Saturday night as in-house DJ at the Walkabout’s Jam nightclub.

Former croc-farmer Phil O’Brien poses as a calendar model.

Former croc farmer lives the dream THE creative mind of former Nhulunbuy croc-farmer Phil O’Brien just keeps on ticking. Having only recently released his new quintessentially Territorian film, On Tour and Lookin’ for a Feed, Phil is back already, with a unique way for everyone to herald the months of 2014. He’s immortalised the Great Aussie bloke in a calendar called Living the Dream. He says that for too many years now, the Great Aussie Bloke has been “downtrodden under the pointy toes of the chardonnay sipping, back waxing, boutique beer guzzling hordes”. “Produced right here in the Territory and distributed nationally, this visually very exciting and completely tasteful chunk of classic Australiana contains brilliantly captured shots

Toll Marine Logistics has the freight service to match your consignment needs. of the life and times of the Great Aussie Bloke. “To add even more depth to this fairdinkum masterpiece, there is a generous sprinkling of philosophy, history, and even the odd recipe,” said Phil. Living the Dream was Phil’s vision, in collaboration with Sydney-based publishers Bartel Publications. The sometimes cheeky photography was done by local Darwin photographer, Ric Benson. Gracing the pages alongside the Great Aussie Bloke is French-born stunner Alizee Sery, who, by her own admission, can’t resist the strength and sensitivity of a Great Aussie Bloke. The calendar can be purchased on line at redhen.com.au.

Fight for Bilingual personal, not political

editor@arafuratimes.com.au

IN reply to Jason Craige (Letters to the Editor, August 28 - Yirrkala celebrations not for political point-scoring). My letter was not political; it was personal. In 2008, the NT Labor Government decided that Bilingual schools could no longer be Bilingual, they had to teach in English Only. To achieve this end, the Labor government, with the support of the Nhulunbuy Labor branch (yes, they supported English Only), and with the help of a manic bureaucracy, went on a cold war-style attack on all people with a different opinion. Those who fought to stop the former government ramming this

WHILE a few seats are yet to be declared, the weekend’s election results have delivered a decisive win for the Federal Coalition which will be led by Tony Abbott as Australia’s 28th Prime Minister. I congratulate Tony Abbott on his win and also acknowledge the efforts and resilience of outgoing Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his predecessor Julia Gillard during a tough campaign and a tough six years in minority government. Six years of Labor Government leaves a proud record of achievements. This includes successfully navigating the global financial crisis through economic stimulus packages

delivering infrastructure which created 960,000 more jobs. Since 2007, Australia’s economy has grown by 13 per cent with inflation contained at 2.4 per cent while maintaining a AAA credit rating. During this same period the US economy has grown just 2.25 per cent and the EU has shrunk by two per cent. Achievements across education with the Better Schools Education reforms delivering an extra $9.8 billion over six years (not that the CLP government signed up to it) and the Building the Education Revolution program which delivered the new school library to Nhulunbuy Christian

College, the upgraded multipurpose hall at Nhulunbuy Primary and new classrooms at Yirrkala and Homelands schools. The standout in health reform for Labor was the NDIS and Disability Care as well as billions in remote health infrastructure. A $13 million upgrade to Gove Hospital’s Emergency Department (which appears to be stalled by the CLP government) and a new primary health care clinic for Galiwin’ku. For workers, the Fair Work Act of 2009 secured minimum standards, paid parental leave and an independent Fair Work Commission for all. In spite of some monumental achievements, the

Labor government was plagued by division and infighting and such instability was not sustainable or palatable for voters. Labor must now reflect, re-energise, re-unify and return to its core values of fairness, equity, and opportunity for all Australians. For me, the silver lining of this election campaign is the result in Lingiari which, while not yet declared, looks set to return to our Federal Labor member Warren Snowdon, in spite of a swing against him. Warren Snowdon polled strongly at the Nhulunbuy booth including early voting and I see this as a reflection of voter sentiment and unhappiness with the CLP

Sports pages can be a mouthful SPORTS reporters occupy a strange place in the newspaper world. On the one hand, their reports and photos are the most popular in their papers. Every Australian reader has a weak spot for one sport or another, anything from footy to women’s synchronised swimming, and the sports pages are why they buy the paper. They need sports reporters. On the other hand the effete intelligentsia of reporting, who get to sit next to the editor’s office and write about politics, arts and culture, feel they are the only ones who really matter. After all, they can spell long words like ‘marmalade’ without using Spellchecker. As a matter of course, only they can be trusted to report on the important stories. Still, in these days of cost-cutting and staff shortages, sometimes sports reporters are called

policy down our throats became dissidents, with some people being spied on, others being locked out of schools, more finding their friends were reluctant to associate with them in public, and several being blacklisted from departmental jobs. Real people were really hurt! And this tactic worked. From nine Bilingual schools three barely remain. So the irony is not lost on me when I am accused of political point-scoring considering the political point-scoring Lynne Walker achieved, a few weeks from a federal election, by presenting a speech at the 40th anniversary of a Bilingual program she had a hand in trying

upon to leave the touch-line and investigate stories of real and touching human interest. One of those stories happened in the last weeks, under the headline NRL Player denies biting Opponent’s penis. Of course, this needs to be handled in a very sensitive way. Let me rephrase that; this story needs to be handled in a very sensitive way. After all, the alleged biter is a very large gentleman with no neck, and he might object. He has already denied that any biting of any nature took place. Contradicting him, the alleged victim felt so strongly about the event that he wanted to present evidence to the referee out on the field. The referee declined the invitation and referred him to a post-match hearing. How can any reporter safely handle a story like this? The victim is refusing to go into detail, and a

As Warren has noted, had it been a Territory election, all of the new CLP members in the bush would have lost their seats. There’s a message there for the CLP about Indigenous Territorians.

The alleged perpetrator comes from a culture that gets very touchy about male-to-male intimacy. He is also a member of a motorcycle gang and they are notoriously unfriendly if one of their members is impugned. Perhaps this is a story the superior reporters prefer to leave to their juniors. We will just have to wait and see - or at least, hear about - what comes out in the disciplinary hearing. Watch the sports pages!

2014 NHULUNBUY PRESCHOOL ENROLMENT DAYS

Care-free pictures of Rolf’s younger days FOR colourful Australian entertainer Rolf Harris, life has certainly had some better days. Mr Harris was recently hit with 13 charges, relating to indecent assault on a 14 and 15-year-old in the 1980s, as well as charges of possessing indecent material relating to a minor in 2012. The 83-year-old painter/singer and performer will soon front court in London over these charges. But life hasn’t always been so dark for Harris - a lighter-hearted part of it was during two legendary trips he took to the Gove Peninsula in the late 1960s and early 70s. On his first outing to the region, in 1969, Harris was brought here by musician and former NT Administrator Ted Egan, who was living and working in North-East Arnhem Land at the time. During this brief stay, Harris performed a concert down in Yirrkala. Ted Egan told the Arafura Times that the locals down there loved him. “Well, part of it was because he could play the didgeridoo pretty well. “And he himself was thrilled to play with some of the leaders who were down there at the time.” The trip has also been remembered famously, as it was here where Mr Egan introduced Harris to the old music hall song, Two Little Boys. The song, which Harris went on to record as a single, was not particularly loved by him at first, Mr Egan said. “Of course, he seemed to like it after it sold all those thousands of copies,” he laughed. The track became a hit for Harris, and powered up the charts to reach number one in the United Kingdom that same year. After achieving this huge level of fame, the wobble-board master then returned for a second stint in the region, in 1972. During this trip, Harris came stocked with artistic supplies, which he used to paint two large murals

while many of the townsfolk looked on in wonder. Historian from the Arnhem Land Historical Society Dave Suter remembers the time well. “Not only was I there when he painted them, I was sitting next to him on the plane coming here. “I actually remember saying to him, ‘Gee, you look like Rolf Harris’. “He said to me, ‘I get that a lot’.” Mr Harris painted two large artworks on masonite panels while perched on a trailer out where the shipping office sits nowadays at the Rio Tinto mine site. “All the people in town were invited to come out and watch him paint it,” Mr Suter said. Skip forward over 40 years, and Rolf Harris is in a very different spot than when he brought such creative fun into Arnhem Land. Mr Egan said he was saddened by the news of what has transpired of late in the United Kingdom. “I hope that it is all worked out as quickly as possible,” he said. Mr Suter said the entertainer’s visit remains an important tidbit of Gove’s modern history. “His time here was something that we should record. “Certainly, the paintings are something we should definitely preserve.” The Historical Society have been seeking to find funding to create aluminium frames to hold the artworks, so they can be displayed and enjoyed by everybody. “I have the Nhulunbuy Corporation’s assurance that they may be able to find a spot in town of some prominence for them to be displayed.” Over the years, the two artworks have hung in the Arnhem Club, in the dining room of Gove House and been stored at Nhulunbuy Primary School, before they were retrieved by the Historical Society and housed in their archive near the airport, where they remain today.

LAST Thursday, September 5, over 40 of the town’s ladies came together for a night of wine, nibbles and, most-importantly, make-up. Gove’s Amcal Pharmacy hosted the Napoleon Night, which featured a talk and makeovers given by a make-up artist from cosmetics company, NP Set - named after famous Greek Australian make-up artist, Napoleon Perdis. It was a chance for the gals to peruse and try some different beauty products - a luxury for some here in our remote town. CAMPER Jack Foley (pictured) found a good solution to his empty dinner place last week, when he captured this 70cm Queenfish at North River. He said he’d got lucky having been able to pull her in, as there had been a pair of eyes watching him do so. “There was a croc lurking out there, and I was pretty sure he was looking to have a feed on my Queeny.” Jack ended up trumping the croc, and pulled in the Queeny for himself. COMMUNITY, SPORT & RECREATIONAL OFFICER Veteran NT truck driver Alfred Hamilton. Photos and words By ALF WILSON VETERAN Northern Territory truck driver Alfred Hamilton has travelled extensively over most rough roads in Arnhem Land. The 60-year-old has been a truckie for 40 years, having come from Werribee in Victoria before arriving in the NT many years ago. “I have driven all over East Arnhem Land, and the dirt roads can be pretty rough and there are often flooded river crossings. “But the people are very friendly there,” he said. Alfred has started work for Alice Springs based Urban and Rural Contracting, and travels extensively. The Arafura Times caught up with him at the huge BP Cluden Roadhouse in Townsville on August 2. “We carry material for roads, and I love the job and I expect to be going back to Arnhem Land soon,” he said. Alfred was driving a Western Star Stratosphere and brought a prime mover down from Alice Springs. He was picking up a tipper for Darwin and also was going to stop at Cloncurry to load a grader for Tennant Creek. Even though Alfred has been over some of the mostchallenging roads in Australia throughout Arnhem Land a few weeks back, he recently drove on the worst highway of his career. “It was the Ootan Road between Mareeba and Mount Surprise. “I have never seen anything like it - driving was so dangerous,” he said.

NATURE’S BEAUTY and BRUTALITY

Croc stomachs a different kind of bull Wild About Gove

VOTERS have been getting expert demonstrations on how to stomach the bull and pork-barrelling of this year’s election by Arnhem Land’s monster crocs. This monster male croc was snapped lunching on an unsuspecting bull shark by Jabiru local Luke Frame while on the Gulyambi Cruise on the East Alligator River. The river borders Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land. “It was quite impressive,” Mr Frame said. “A really great experience to see.”

Sharks often end up as croc-fodder, however it is rare to see such occurrences in the wild. Saltwater crocodiles (Baru, in YolnguMatha) are the world’s largest reptiles and Australia’s largest estuarine and freshwater predator. They use stillness and camouflage to hide and underwater stealth and lightening reflexes to kill. Words and photograph courtesy, Chris Piggott-McKellar and West Arnhem Land’s The Wire.

LET’S face it - it’s hard to take a terrible photo during sunset at East Woody Beach. But it’s even harder to take a great shot - which is what local Kelly Rathgen has done here. Featured in the shot, alongside the silhouette of East Woody Island, are Kelly’s mates Thelma and Ash, strolling along the sand. As Ash put it, “We went for the sunset, but missed it,

and that was the sight when we arrived. I think it’s better.” Kelly’s shot has put her in the running for Photo of the Month for August (as that’s when the shot was taken). At the end of the year, the 12 winners of the Photo of the Month will be announced, and their photos displayed at a venue around town (location yet to be named). To be in with a grin, get your photos in to editor@ arafuratimes.com.au. If you have a change of contact details for your organisation or group, can you please email thru to ads@arafuratimes.com.au

AFL and NRL FOOTY TIPPING competitions come to an end

Arafura Times

Another tie to end tipping Andres Hoffman, Graham Hughes share honours

IN an extraordinary end to the Arafura Times/ Arnhem Club NRL and AFL footy tipping competitions, both have ended in ties. Following last weekend’s AFL competiton which concluded in a tie between crackers and pleb, the NRL contest ended in the same result with a tie between Andres Hoffman and Graham Hughes. Again the leaders crashed badly, with leader Graham Hughes getting only four winners from the eight games in a round, which, in fact, was dominated by upsets. Kaffir, very much in contention for much of the competition, scored five which opened the door for Andres Hoffman who scored six to join

winners, nor did seven winners. And only Andres Hoffman and Wayno scored six. Final scores were 136: Andres Hoffman (6), Graham Hughes (4). 135: Kaffir (5), Wayno (6). 134: Marlinman (4). 131: Malkzok1 (5), Putty (5). 130: doodlesuckernobagchc (5). 129: Tanya Hoffman (4). 128: Travis Dehnert (5), Jez (5) 127: Killer (3). 126: Halwes (3). 125: grimmus8u (5).

Graham Hughes on top with 136. In a extraordinarily close competition, the duo finished only one in front of Kaffir (5 winners) ad Wayno (6) on 135, with Marlinman, who blew his chances with four winners, another one back on 134. Upsets started as early as Friday night when the Broncos downed the Bulldogs, followed by the Dragon’s win against the Warriors and only Tracey xxxx tipped the Panthers to account for the Sea Eagles. Although not regarded as an upset of significant proportions, most tipsters missed out when the Roosters down the Rabbitohs. Not surprisingly, no one scored all eight

124: Luke Cole (4). 122: Jeremy 4X (3), Shaun Dennis (4). 121: Broccoli (4). 120: KaDavo82 (4). 119: hayden4x (4), Tracey xxxx (5). 116: Waggy (4). 115: Forbsey (0).: 113: Aussie Joe (3). 110: KaRon 1 (0). 106: Morgstar (5), 105: Aaron Tilley (0). The winner of the Arafura Times/Arnhem Club NRL tipping competition wins $500. Both winners need to contact Arafura Times editor Matt Garrick with proof of identity please.

Djarrak ends Gapuwiyak’s season GAPUWIYAK ended their first GAFL season last Saturday, going down by 14 points to Djarrak in a rousing match at Gunyangara (Ski Beach) Oval. The fledgling team proved they had the ability to crack the top three next

season, keeping up with the yellow and brown Yirrkala side for much of the game. In the day’s centre-piece match, Nguykal defeated ladder leaders Gopu, giving them a week off before

going into the Grand Final on September 21. Gopu and Djarrak will thrash it out next weekend, in an elimination game to decide which of the two teams will meet Nguykal in the final.

The great annual cane toad CULL, sept. 5 THE town’s cane toads didn’t stand a chance last Thursday night, when they were faced up against 51 of Nhulunbuy’s eager young wildlife warriors during the Great Annual Cane Toad Cull. The golf course and Lion’s Park were lit up with spotlights as students and townsfolk went out with their gloves and barrels eradicating the region of the

slimy pests. Over the night, 1203 toads were collected and disposed of in a humane manner - some of them ending up on the dissection tables in science class at Nhulunbuy High the following day. Toad numbers were down by 71 this year, which organiser and science teacher Miss Cassie said was

a good indication. “The numbers have gone down steadily each year, so it proves what we’ve been doing at these annual nights has been working.” Prizes were handed out for the most and biggest toads caught on the night, with both awards going to the Niven brothers - Marcus, Thomas and Jack - who

The boys won themselves two fully-stocked tackle boxes, courtesy of Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club, for their efforts in helping the East Arnhem environment.

WHAT HAS THIS GUY BEEN EATING?? Lili Greenslade and Bronte Epiha were a little grossed out by their toad. Young Marcus Niven watches on as Paul Grover confirms his 14.5cm toad as the biggest catch of the day.

Illusionary end to netball season

A-GRADE: Illusions 23 d Arafura Devils 18 B-GRADE: Fumblebees 29 d Crocs 20

IT was a hard battle, but green-team Illusions have won this year’s Gove Netball Association (GNA) A-Grade Grand Final. The last match of the season, held last Friday evening, was a tight tussle between Illusions and runners-up the Arafura Devils. The Devils were in poll position for much of the game, with just one point separating the two teams by the end of the third quarter. But Illusions held their nerve, and thanks to a couple of late goals they rose above to grab the flag for 2013. In the B-Grade, the Fumblebees took away the top honour this year, pipping runners-up the Crocs in a close win, 29-20. Registrar for GNA Natasha Rowe said this year’s season was amazing. “We only had three teams in A-Grade, but it was really strong between the three teams. “The other team that didn’t make it this year was Big Mammas.” She said the quality of the finals was excellent. “Usually every final, they step it up a gear. “Last year Arafura Devils won the Grand Final, this year it’s gone back to Illusions.” Ms Rowe said more teams of ladies would be welcome to join up for the competition next season.
