TEACHERS TO BE LOST
• Yirrkala School will lose four teachers, • Nhulunbuy High will lose three, and
• Laynhapuy Homelands School will lose two and their only I.T. position.
By MATT GARRICK LEADERS from the region have taken their protest against teacher cuts to the capital, facing off with the Minister for Education in Darwin. Widow of the Yothu Yindi frontman and former senior Yirrkala School teacher Gurruwun Yunupingu last week presented a bark petition to Minister Peter Chandler as
a symbol of what she calls “a quiet anger”. The NT Government have plans to cut $250m from education across the Territory over the next four years, with a number of teaching positions set to be slashed across the Gove region. A passionate advocate for remote education, Ms Yunupingu was part of a huge 500-plus people protest outside Darwin’s Parliament House last Thursday, October
17, where she handed over the petition (see report, page 3 >>). Back in Yirrkala, last weekend she spoke of a system that has failed the remote Territory. “The system is failing everyone. “The schools, the teachers, everyone, when what we need is someone to be working closely with us.” Ms Yunupingu, whose late husband

She called upon Mr Chandler to make the trip to Gove to speak with school councils about the damage these cuts will inflict. “Someone has to listen.” Continued Page 3 >>

ART lovers of the region, get those champagne flutes at the ready - Nhulunbuy will soon have its own Regional Arts Centre to call home to local, creative works. The official opening of the Gove Regional Arts Centre is set to be a gourmet extravaganza, to take place on Friday night, November 1, at the new arts hub inside the 4C’s Community Centre, opposite the bakery. To prepare for the day, Gove Peninsula Festival Association (GPF) is looking for original local works to be displayed at their inaugural exhibition. The Moments and Memories Art Exhibition will be held on opening night
from 7pm, then again during the day on November 2. GPF Arts Coordinator Kylie Farnsworth has been calling out to the community to share their artworks. “These may include ready to display photography, paintings, drawings, sculptures, textile art and mixed media. “And it may be something you created many years ago or recently. “There are many people in our community who have a love for visual arts and have either made artworks professionally or for a hobby, and this exhibition gives them the opportunity to share the fruits of their labour with the wider community.”
To get involved in the exhibition, contact Kylie at arts@govefestival.org. au. The artworks can be dropped off at 4C’s on Wednesday October 30 between 3.30pm-8pm and Thursday, October 31, between 3.30pm and 6pm. The Moments and Memories Art Exhibition will also be open on Saturday, November 2, from 9am till 3pm for a gold coin donation. Ms Farnsworth said the art exhibition will also inspire budding artists to commence their art pieces for the Arnhem Land People and Places Art Competition to be held in mid-2014.

NT Senior Australian of the Year finalist Klaus Helms waves the flag for the Territory at Garma 2013.
Finalist for NT Young Australian of the Year, carer Emily Osborne.
Outstanding locals named as Aust. of the Year finalists A YOUTH ambassador and a Territory stalwart - two of our remarkable locals have been chosen as finalists for the Northern Territory Australian of the Year. Local carer Emily Osborne has made it to the shortlist for NT’s Young Australian of the Year, while Chief Executive Officer of Gumatj Corporation Klaus Helms has been picked to run for Senior Australian of the Year. The winners of their respective categories will be on their way to Canberra next year, to vie for national Australian of the Year Awards against winning competitors from the other states and territories. Mr Helms, who has been in Gove since he was 17-years-old,
has been nominated for having devoted the best part of 40 years to improving the lives of the local Indigenous community and promoting reconciliation. A statement on the Australian of the Year website says Mr Helms, who lives in Gunyangara (Ski Beach), “has a long-term vision to secure the community’s economic independence, and has been instrumental in establishing projects such as cattle farming, meat production, timber mills and fishing operations to reduce the cost of living in the communities”. He told the Arafura Times that being selected as a finalist was a great honour. “Whatever happens from now
I’m pretty proud of where I’ve gotten to. “I’ve always fought for this region, and I think this is more of a regional accolade than just mine. “I’m thankful that we are at least recognised, here in Gove.” The whole region needs to be recognised, not just Nhulunbuy. “It’s important that we stand up and we are recognised in this place, because that’s going to help us in the long run.” On the other side of the table, passionate young carer Emily Osborne has been chosen for her hard work as a carer looking after her sister Kaia, who suffers from a rare neurological disorder, and for championing a number of important
youth issues in the NT. One community-based project she has been focused on was youth suicide. Her work on the issue culminated in a Suicide Prevention Day at the Nhulunbuy Town Hall in April, 2012. The NT Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Local Hero Award recipients will be announced on Thursday, November 7 at the Darwin Convention Centre. NT recipients will then join award recipients from all other states and territories as finalists for the national awards, which will be held on January 25, 2014 in Canberra.
EDUCATION - PROTESTS AT TEACHER CUTS
‘Quiet anger’ at region’s teacher cuts << From Page 1 “The pain and suffering that teachers have now, they showed it at the rally last week - their pain and anger. “I want to see the government coming out to communities, and see for themselves what the communities are like now, with their own eyes. “Because sometimes when they’re talking, they don’t know what they’re talking about.” Nhulunbuy High School Council has echoed these calls for both Mr Chandler and the Chief Minister Adam Giles to travel to the region and
front-up to councils about what these cuts will mean. Vice Chair of Nhulunbuy High’s council Deb Osborne said a reduction of teachers would mean increased workloads and stress levels for local teachers. “The mental health of our whole school community will need to be closely monitored as these changes impact our school.” (Full comment, page 8 >>). The council has also drafted a letter to send to the ministers, inviting them to meet with officials here in Gove. Also in the fight are the Australian Education
Union (AEU), who have been gathering grassroots support from locals by petitioning and spreading awareness around the region. Regional President of the AEU Martin Griffin said these cuts to teacher positions and support staff were coming at a time when Territory kids were at further risk of falling behind. “For a government that so pointed the finger at education gaps while in opposition, it really beggars belief. It is simply a no-brainer - no cuts to education funding.”
At current, it looks as if Yirrkala School will lose four teachers, Nhulunbuy High will lose three and the Laynhapuy Homelands School will lose two and their only I.T. position. Nhulunbuy residents will have the chance to access further information about the proposed cuts at the Art and Craft markets this Saturday, where AEU officials will be setting up a stall.
Bark petition protests teacher cuts from the budget for education is just not right. “Our children need teachers there and teachers need children there.” Mr Chandler accepted the bark petition last
Wednesday. Bark petitions blend traditional Yolngu art with western-style petitions, and have been used by the Yolngu as a form of protest for over 50
years. It is not yet know if Mr Chandler will respond to calls by local education officials and visit the region to talk with school councils.

liament House in Darwin. The petition was handed over last Thursday, October 17, during a large protest against teacher cuts planned for the NT.
Ms Yunupingu, the widow of late Yothu Yindi frontman Dr Yunupingu, said the painting represented all children together in unity. She said the rays of the sun represented the children of the NT, and the nation. “That painting is a broad picture of children in the NT, because out here we come from many races. “And not just children, but people who are in the community; the mothers and the fathers.” These people would all be affected by teacher cuts, she said. Nhulunbuy and its surrounding communities will be damaged by these planned cuts, she said, and this will greatly impact on the hard work done in remote education. “Cutting away

A SERIOUSLY injured man was flown by CareFlight to Darwin last Friday, October 18, after a utility rolled over three times near the community of Gapuwiyak. A nurse from the local health clinic found the injured man lying beside the wreck of his ute at about 7am. The nurse provided initial treatment to the 43-yearold man before transporting him to the clinic where staff treated the man for multiple injuries and fractures to his arms and legs. The man said the ute’s uninjured driver had dragged him from the vehicle which hit a tree and rolled three times before coming to rest on its crushed roof. A CareFlight doctor and nurse flew to Gapuwiyak and continued treatment as they took the man to Royal Darwin Hospital where he remained in a stable condition.
A 28-YEAR-OLD man has died following a motorbike crash on Melville Bay Rd last Monday, October 14. The accident occurred near to the Rainbow Cliffs turnoff around 7pm that night. Police have said it was believed the man was travelling along the gravel verge of the road when he collided with a recently dug culvert. The man had been riding alone, and there had been no witnesses on the scene when the accident happened. A car driving along the road witnessed a large dust plume, and discovered the bike and man
lying unconscious next to it. St Johns Ambulance attended the scene soon after, and the man was transferred to Gove District Hospital then later that evening to Royal Darwin Hospital. He was in a serious condition for most of the week, until he passed away last Sunday morning. Nhulunbuy Police released a statement saying the exact circumstances surrounding the crash were still being investigated. “Obviously this is a very distressing time for relatives and friends and our thoughts are with them at this time,” a police spokesperson said.
A fourth drink driver was arrested on Sunday evening. A 39-year-old man was arrested for medium range drink driving on Friday night after arriving in Nhulunbuy on the evening Qantas flight. The man left the airport and commenced driving towards Nhulunbuy when he was stopped at a random breath-testing station on Melville Bay Road. On Saturday morning a 41-yearold man was stopped at a random breath-testing station on Chesterfield Circuit. The man was driving without a licence and was arrested for numerous offences including unlicenced driving with alcohol in blood. Both the 39-year-old and 41-year-old will appear in the Nhulunbuy Court of Summary Jurisdiction in November.
On The Beat with NT Police Again on Saturday morning, a 31-year-old man was arrested for high-range drink driving and driving while disqualified after being stopped by police in the Ski Beach area. He will appear in court in Darwin on Monday the October 21. On Sunday afternoon, a 53-yearold male was arrested and issued an infringement notice for low-range drink driving after being stopped by police at a random breath testing station on Beagle Circuit. “This is a timely reminder to all motorists that Northern Territory Police will continue to target drink driving on Northern Territory roads,” said Sergeant
Shire cleans up at Tidy Town awards THE community of Gunyangara (Ski Beach) has sparkled in the recent Keep Australia Beautiful Council NT Awards for Tidy Towns. Gunyangara last week was awarded the Best Small Community Award by the council. Members of the East Arnhem Shire (EAS) Council received the award for their hard work keeping the community clean. They also took away an award for the Best Energy Waste Reduction in the NT. A group from EAS travelled to Alice Springs last weekend, to accept the
awards, which were presented by NT Minister for Community Services Bess Price and Keep Australia Beautiful Council board member Banambi Wunungmurra, who is also the President of East Arnhem Shire. Keep Australia Beautiful Council Northern Territory CEO Heimo Schober said it was always a pleasure to be able to recognise and promote the work that many dedicated individuals and communities were undertaking to continuously improve the social and environmental developments within their own communities CLEAN LIVING: EAS President Banambi Wunungmurra, Minister for Community across the Territory. Services Bess Price and Shire Services Manager Richard Fitowski.
Promising prospects for the region’s future EAST Arnhem Land has a wealth of mineral, petroleum and gas prospects sitting under its earth, and the government is keen to unlock its potential, a Regional Development Committee meeting was told last week. Chief Executive Officer of the NT Department of Mines and Energy Scott Perkins travelled to Nhulunbuy to attend the meeting last Wednesday, where he told the group of local business and organisation leaders about these prospects.
The committee was told that work was currently underway to unlock this potential. Committee Chair and Gumatj Corporation CEO Klaus Helms said the meeting was very informative, and gave an inspiring outlook for the NT’s distant future. “It’s a long way to go, but it was enlightening to see what is out there in our region. “Mr Perkins was very open and candid with his answers, and he had a lot of information about where areas of interest were.”
Mr Helms said one interesting aspect of the meeting was learning about the amount of mining companies that already have applications in for exploration licences in East Arnhem Land. These companies included BHP Biliton, GEMCO (Groote Eylandt Mining Company) Tuc, Rio Tinto, Alcoa and more. Some of their exploration licence application submissions date back as far as the 1970s. The region’s Traditional Owners have the right to veto the granting
of any exploration licences, as the region is Aboriginal-owned land. The Regional Development Committee continues to hold regular meetings to discuss future pathways for the East Arnhem economy to take to move forward, as the region waits for a decision from Rio Tinto about getting Gasto-Gove. They also welcome input from community members, who have been invited to send through their comments and ideas to EastArnhemREDC@nt.gov.au.

Two hurt in rollover TWO government workers were hospitalised after a rollover on the Central Arnhem Highway on the morning of Friday, October 11. The pair, a 53-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, who hailed from Darwin, flipped their car out near Gumatj Corporation’s Garrathiya cattle station. Emergency services attended the scene from where the pair was transported to hospital with suspected spinal injuries. One of the passengers sustained a fractured left arm in the crash. The cause of the accident remains unknown, but police have said that alcohol was not believed to be a factor. Drugs, cash seized in house raids A NUMBER of search warrants were executed in the region last week, in relation to possible drug offences. A 33-year-old Yirrkala woman was summonsed to appear in court after police entered her property on October 16 and discovered a small amount of cannabis allegedly in her possession. Danger flares up at town tip: Plea for care NHULUNBUY Tip staff have urged the public to be careful what they throw out in their general rubbish, after disposed of out-of-date flares recently started a large fire. Staff were put into the danger zone when the fire sparked while they were compacting rubbish in the main part of the tip. Tip Manager Beta Saukuru said the flames spread quickly, due to the heat and dryness of all the waste. “We had to get the firies out here, who needed assistance from some Rio guys. “It’s not the first time this has happened either. “People need to think about what they’re throwing away.” Mr Saukuru said items like old flares were ticking time-bombs for him and his staff.
“All you have to do to set them off is crack them. “If they go off, it poses a big danger to workers out here, as well as garbage collectors.” Old flares can be handed in to the police or fire station, the latter of who use them for training purposes. Also discovered at the tip recently were discarded old EPIRBs - safety beacons boaties use if they get lost out at sea. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said that when EPIRB signals go off at the tip, local police are forced to waste their resources heading out to the tip to look for them. “With boating season coming up, it’s a timely reminder for people to properly dispose of their old EPIRBs.” Old EPIRBs can also be handed into the Nhulunbuy Police Station.
Gumatj worker Tony Yunupingu, who works at the tip, was put in danger during a recent fire sparked by out-of-date flares.

AFTER months of searching, a new head has been found for Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation. The organisation, which supports some 30 Homeland communities across North-East Arnhem Land with myriad services, announced last week that executive Don Sutherland will be stepping into the role of Chief Executive Officer from October 28. Chairman of the Laynha Board Barayuwa Mununggurr said Mr Sutherland brings broad and highly relevant experience to the role. “The Board is confident that he is wellequipped to lead the organisation through the next phase of growth and development.” Mr Sutherland has experience working in similar organisations in Western Australia’s Kimberleys and Flinders Ranges in South Australia, as well as international business experience working in China and the Middle
East. Outgoing Acting Chief Executive Officer Chris Marshall, who was brought into the role as a transitional manager while the organisation worked through changes to government policy and financial difficulties, will step down on November 12. He said the timing was now right for the organisation to start a new phase. “The time of transition at Laynha has come to an end. “We’ve built up a new platform of stability, meaning the timing is right for Mr Sutherland to direct the organisation into the opportunities that come next.” The Board have said they were committed to ensuring the new Laynha goes from strength to strength in supporting viable, self-sufficient Homelands committed to strong social and economic outcomes.

But NO station for Nhulunbuy
THE Cashfor-Cans container deposit program has been resurrected across the Territory. After a lengthy court case ruled against soft-drink companies wanting to stop the scheme, it has now been brought back into action. There will now be nine depots across the Territory, including one in East Arnhem Land, in Milingimbi. The others will be based in Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. A mobile collection unit will also service remote communities and townships. These depots will operate under the existing legislation and regulations. In the first 18 months after the scheme was introduced in January, 2012, 90 million containers were recycled. NT Minister for the Environment Peter Chandler said the success of the scheme was a testament to Territorians’ willingness to build sustainable and balanced environments as every container recycled is one less destined for landfill. “I would urge all Territorians to take advantage of the depots that are currently operating as we can all play a part in caring for our environment.” Nhulunbuy remains without a container deposit station. Local business East Arnhem Trading had planned to open a container depot in the town’s industrial area, but due to changes in management, the depot looks as if it may not open for a while.

New way to detect tropical disease A TEAM of researchers have notched up a win against the bacterial infection meliodosis, which has been known to cause deaths in East Arnhem Land. Researchers at James Cook University have developed a new highly sensitive and rapid diagnostic test for melioidosis called 2DIA. The development of the new 2DIA diagnostic test involved researchers from JCU and The Townsville Hospital, and was, lead by Associate Professor Patrick

Schaeffer, leader of JCU’s Supramolecular and Synthetic Biology Group. Professor Schaeffer said previous sensitive tests took three to four days to obtain a result. “The 2DIA test works by detecting a subset of specific antibodies that are released in the blood of all patients infected by the bacterium.” Melioidosis is treatable by a limited number of antibiotics. The bacteria affects people in tropical regions of Australia.
Melioidosis can be difficult to diagnose, which is a contributing factor to the high mortality rate of the disease ranging from 16 per cent in northern Australia to 40 per cent in northeast Thailand. The research team is now in the process of translating the technology into a rapid life-saving bedside test. Major risk factors to develop the disease include diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, chronic lung disease, and excessive alcohol use.

letters to the editor/comment Education cuts will slash our children’s futures BY now you are probably aware that the Northern Territory Government is slashing $250m from Education over the next four years. Nhulunbuy High School will be affected by these cuts in funding. The facts are: • We will lose two teachers in 2014. • This will cause some reduction of subject choice. • It will mean larger class sizes. • Limit the range of specialist teachers. • More students will need to access Distance Learning instead of face to face classes. Our school is unique as we are small, but by necessity we must be comprehensive. Our school runs the risk of not being able to retain our specialist teachers and, without them,
it cannot offer the full scope of a comprehensive Secondary School curriculum. Our school caters to a vast range of students, including from different cultural backgrounds and levels of abilities and disabilities. Also, it is able to support all students in a range of pathways through VET as well as traditional academic programs. It also offers greater flexibility through access to correspondence courses, Special Education Learning programs and the support of the Cultural Centre, to name a few examples. If we lose teachers we will have less flexibility to respond to the individual needs of our students. Our teachers are already supporting our students outside of class time through tutorials and extra curriculum activities.
A reduction of teachers will only see increased workloads and stress levels for our teachers. The mental health of our whole school community will need to be closely monitored as these changes impact our school. Nhulunbuy High School Council is sending an invitation to the Chief Minister Adam Giles and Education Minister Peter Chandler to come to Gove and answer questions in regards to the future of our schools. As a council we fully support and stand behind our teachers, support staff, Assistant Principals and Principal. Please support our schools by making your voice heard! Deb Osborne, Vice-Chair, Nhulunbuy High School Council.
CLP government on the back foot on a range of issues LAST week’s parliamentary sittings in Darwin saw question time and debates cover a range of issues, all of which indicated that the CLP government is clearly on the back foot. We heard about the return to open speed limits on the Stuart Highway by way of a 12-month trial along a 200km stretch of road north of Alice Springs. Amidst an outcry from the AANT, doctors, ambulance services and other expert advice that increasing speed limits is sure to cost lives, the government has refused to make public any of the four reports it has commissioned on the subject.
We heard much about Larisa Lee, the Member for Arnhem, amidst serious allegations of fraud and cover up within Katherine’s Jawoyn Association which were aired on last week’s episode of ABC’s Four Corners. With the matter of a police investigation very unclear, the Labor opposition has called for a judicial inquiry into the matter. We also heard much about cuts to education, teachers and support roles at a rally attended by around 500 people on the steps of Parliament last Thursday afternoon. I was incredibly proud of
Yirrkala teacher Gurruwun Yunupingu, who presented the minister with a bark petition objecting to the cuts. It was an incredibly powerful and symbolic gesture. THIS week I am in Alice Springs for three days with Labor caucus colleagues to meet with various stakeholders, businesses, organisations and service providers. In my capacity as the shadow minister for Indigenous Policy, I will also be attending the biennial Indigenous Economic Development Forum, an initiative of the former Labor government. Timed to coincide with
October Business Month, the forum presents an opportunity for people from a diverse range of backgrounds to share experiences, explore possibilities and to work towards building more economic opportunities and sustainable Indigenous businesses in the Territory. North East Arnhemland has been well represented in the past at this forum and I know once again there are locals travelling to participate including traditional owners associated with the successful Lirrwi Tourism. I look forward to returning to Nhulunbuy on Thursday, in time to celebrate World Teachers’

day on Friday at a special graduation ceremony to be held at Yirrkala. On Saturday night I will be at the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce October Business Month dinner and look forward to hearing what guest speaker, Business Minister Dave Tollner, has to say.
Jack of all trades: Life through number plates LAST week the Arafura Times announced that we’re on the hunt for the best number plate in Gove. Locals have been asked to send through the stories that lie behind their personalised plates. The competition will run for a few weeks, at the end of which the best of the bunch will be chosen by a jury of five motor-minded community members, and the winner gifted a $150 voucher for Gove Motors. And we’ve had one competitor shoot out to an early lead from the starting grid; the infamous JDNDRY.
In the words of owner Matt May, here’s the story behind the JD number plates. I have been a collector of all things Jack Daniels for as long as I can remember. And with the amount of JD I have consumed over the years, that memory thing is not what it used to be. I’ve had everything from tshirts, hats, stubby coolers to eskies, coasters and now number plates. We have five, and each number plate sort of suits the car that it is on. JDnCoke, (Nissan Patrol).
The main stay: Mr. Reliable, the Big Dog. JDnDRY, (Mitsubishi Lancer). A nice drop, not something for everyday, but nice for a change. STR8JD, (HSV VY Clubby). Serious business: not to be taken lightly, drink too much and it may get you in trouble. JDnMUD and JDnDUST. His and Hers speedway cars: she leaves me in the Dust and I eat a lot of Mud. There’s still a few weeks to go in the competition, so get your stories in: 50-150 words on where your number plate name came from, and what it’s all about.

On the Town Lease Monday, 4 November 2013 – Friday, 8 November 2013 The annual pre-cyclone pickup helps Nhulunbuy residents to clean up their yard in preparation for the cyclone season. Residents should place all household items that could constitute a hazard in the event of a cyclone, on the kerb in the front of their property before 4 November. These items should not obstruct pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Residents are reminded that it is a requirement of the sublease on their property that it be maintained in a clean, neat and tidy condition at all times. The pickup removes debris which could become dangerous missiles in the event of a cyclone.

OKTOBERFEST, GOVE COUNTRY CLUB, OCT. 19

Words and Photos by: TIM SCHMIDT BEER flowed freely at the Gove Country Golf Club last Saturday night, when the Gove Variety Queens hosted Oktoberfest. Guests were treated to a fine selection of international brews and German inspired food, not to mention their souvenir steins. The night was enlivened by the cheers of onlookers as the Keg-and-Stein race was run, a clever re-imagining on the classic egg-and-spoon race. To round off the night, the coin-toss and yodelling competitions had party goers enthralled. All money raised on the night went to the Gove Variety Queens to help disadvantaged children in the Northern Territory. The girls performed a dance and gave a moving speech in tribute to their father at the recent Deadly Awards, which took place in September at the Sydney Opera House. The Deadlys are a huge annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement in music, sport, entertainment and

Daughter Rhonda Yunupingu delivered a message from her mother Yalmay, Dr Yunupingu’s widow, as well as from other family members. “Families ask that you not only listen to Dad’s songs but take note of the messages and build on them for our future.” She talked of her father’s totem of a crocodile, and the meaning of his name. “Yunupingu means a rock, a rock that stands against time.” The Yunupingu daughters took to

By MATT GARRICK FEATURE: DAVID GULPILIL Charlie’s Country: David Gulpilil’s new film - and 10 of the best INTERNATIONALLY-renowned Yolngu actor David Gulpilil has travelled a long, wild and winding creative road. Last week opened the newest chapter of his career, with the World Premier of his semi-biographical film called Charlie’s Country at the Adelaide Film Festival. The new film was directed by his longtime friend Rolf de Heer, the mastermind behind some of the Arnhem Land actor’s most-memorable roles including in The
Tracker and Ten Canoes. Written by both de Heer and Gulpilil himself, the main character in Charlie’s story charts a similar journey to the one lived by the acclaimed actor; a piece-bypiece account of a man’s disintegration away from a life of traditional culture into a battle with alcohol and other substances. The movie, filmed in Ramingining, provides an insight into Yolngu men in similar positions to Charlie’s, living in
Original poster from Gulpilil’s first film, Walkabout. 2. WALKABOUT (1971) His first movie, and still one of his best. At just 16-years-old, the young Gulpilil exudes tenderness and sex appeal, the like of which had never been seen before by white Australian film audiences. He takes a pair of white children from Sydney on a trek through the desert, and into a mesmerising, sometimes odd, journey into Aboriginal heartland which will stick in their minds forever - as it does in the minds of movie-goers.
communities trapped under the hardline white law of the Federal Intervention. Critics have already branded the new film as excellent, and Gulpilil’s performance as “mesmerising” and “intimate”. While it may take awhile to see Charlie’s Country up here on screens in Gove, Arafura Times Editor Matt Garrick looks back over ten of the best films from Gulpilil’s career, some of which changed Australia’s cinematic landscape forever.
1. THE TRACKER (2002) Shot in the rugged South Australian outback by Ten Canoes director Rolf de Heer, this is Gulpilil at the top of his game. His mysterious presence as the main character of the black tracker is filled equally with threat Son and father Jamie and David Gulpilil with and uncalled-for humour, as he leads an expedition of David’s prestigious Red Ochre Award that he won white police officers out into the desert looking a wanted in May this year. Photo: Caroline McCredie. Aboriginal man. Gulpilil was showered in accolades and awards for this film, and the grim final scenes out at a cold desert campsite prove why. 4. CROCODILE DUNDEE (1986) This Aussie classic from 1985 was one of the first times that international movie-goers caught sight of a funny, slightly urbane Aboriginal character. Gulpilil played Mick ‘Crocodile’ Dundee’s (Paul Hogan’s) blackfella mate, Neville. When Mick’s love interest tries to take Neville’s photo he says, “You can’t take my photograph”, to which she replies, “Oh, I’m sorry, you believe it will take your spirit away?” and he answers her with the classic line, “Nah, you’ve still got the lens cap on!” 5. STORM BOY (1976) In this simple yet lovely film about a boy and his pelican, Gulpilil acts as the wise voice of reason in the role of the boy’s mate, Fingerbone Bill. The boy, Storm Boy, was given his name by Bill due to his penchant for wandering through storms on the deserted South Australian coast. 6. TEN CANOES (2006) The quintessential East Arnhem Land movie, filmed out and using actors from Ramingining. It features Gulpilil in the role of narrator and his son, Jamie Gulpilil, acting in the lead role. The title of the film arose from discussions between director Rolf de Heer and Gulpilil Snr about a photograph of ten canoeists on the Arafura Swamp, taken by an anthropologist in 1936. It is the first movie featuring dialogue completely in Yolngu Matha, although Gulpilil’s narration is in English. 7. MAD DOG MORGAN (1976) Being coupled with notoriously wild-living Easy Rider actor Dennis Hopper on this bushranger flick can’t have done wonders to Gulpilil’s drinking habits. This frenetic B-grade film about a bushranger was shot in the wilds of Victoria. During a six-year stint in jail, Morgan (Hopper) befriends Billy (Gulpilil). Upon their release, they unleash a violent wave of crime throughout a NSW colony. 8. THE PROPOSITION (2005) In this gritty Australian western, Gulpilil reprises his role as a black tracker, this time named Jacko. He and a band of coppers hit the bush to investigate the reported slaying of a police officer by a group of Aborigines. This dark and murderous outback drama, written by musician Nick Cave, sees Gulpilil covered in a suitable three-day growth, and growling as if he’d woken up on the wrong side of the bed. 10. AUSTRALIA (2008) Filmed in the rugged setting of the West Australian Kimberley, director Baz Luhrmann’s overblown epic sees Gulpilil with an equally epic beard as a character called King George. Gulpilil’s appearance is the most-memorable part of the film, as a magic man and traditional elder who is wanted by the crown’s men on a murder charge.
As the black tracker from Phillip Noyce’s Rabbit-Proof Fence.
Gulpilil in the 2012 film, Satellite Boy. Photos courtesy: Screen Australia.
3. RABBIT-PROOF FENCE (2002) Here, Gulpilil is a man torn between two worlds. Indoctrinated by white people during the Stolen Generation, he plays a tracker whose job it is to hunt down young Aboriginal children who escape from a mission they have been placed in after being removed from their parents. Gulpilil portrays the stony-faced tracker’s moral dilemma with a cold lack of emotion, surprisingly making him riveting to watch.
9. SATELLITE BOY (2012) One of his most recent films, Satellite Boy marked a welcome return to the screen for Gulpilil after a few years hiatus dealing with various issues including alcoholism. He gives a measured, patient performance as a grandfather living with his grandson in an old abandoned outdoor cinema in the desert. He relays a message of protecting culture, teaching the young man how to survive using traditional bush skills.

Nhulunbuy-born teen rolls on to world stage
ABOVE: Reigning world champion wheelchair basketball team, the Rollers (with Nhulunbuy-born Tom O’Neill-Thorne third from right). RIGHT: GO TOM: Nhulunbuy-born Tom O’Neill-Thorne has been selected for a national wheelchair basketball team. A NHULUNBUY-born teen has been named for a national wheelchair basketball team. Sixteen-year-old Tom O’Neill-Thorne has been named in the Senior Australian Men’s wheelchair basketball team, known as the Rollers, ahead of the 2013 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Asia/ Oceania Championships in November in Thailand. Sports Program Manager at the NT Department of Sport Sean Cooke congratulated Tom on his first major senior team selection. “The Territory continues to produce outstanding wheelchair basketball players, and the announcement that Tom has been
selected in the Rollers is another boost to the sport locally. “Tom was previously part of the bronzemedal winning Australian Spinners Under 23 team at the World Wheelchair Basketball championships in Turkey in September this year, along with fellow Territorian CJ Grogan.” In the past, Territorian wheelchair basketball players have had great success at the national level, including Nadia Romeo and Melissa Dunn, winning silver in 2000 Sydney Paralympics, and Melanie Hall winning bronze in 2008 Paralympics. “We wish Tom all the best for the upcom-
ing tournament,” Mr Cooke said. The Rollers will take part in the Champions’ Cup, in Japan, from November 12-18. The Rollers will then depart for Thailand, where the 2013 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Asia/Oceania championships will be held from November 20-30. The results of this tournament will allow Australia to book their place in the 2014 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Men’s Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in South Korea from July 1-12, 2014. The Rollers are the current reigning World Champions.

By TIM SCHMIDT GOVE Tennis has been giving Homelands kids a sporting chance to use the facilities to which townsfolk are accustomed, bringing in youth from across the region for a tennis camp. The Healthy Lifestyles Tennis Camp was held for indigenous kids from across East Arnhem Land on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 15-16. A total of 36 kids aged between 10 and 13-years-old from Birany Birany, Dhalinybuy, Borowuy/Wandawuy, Garrthalala, Gan Gan, Milingimbi, Gapuwiyak, Yirrkala and Gove hit the tennis courts to learn valuable ball -smashing skills. To be eligible to go to the tennis workshop in Gove, students were required to have good school attendance and have showed commitment to school tennis programs in their Homelands. Club Manager Nicky Mayer said the kids had an absolute ball. “I hope the skills being taught to them will increase their interest and desire to continue learning tennis. “Who knows? They could one day be able to represent East Arnhem in competitions
around the country.” She said the camp consisted of skill building exercises to improve their ground strokes and serving, and a round-robin competition to see how well they were doing. Youth Development Officer from Laynhapuy Charly Templar, who spends much of his time working with kids in Homelands, said sporting resources like this tennis camp were invaluable. “Out there, kids don’t have the facilities to learn good skills for new games. “Something like this just opens new doors.” This is the first time Gove Tennis has run an indigenous camp, and Nicky said she hoped to run another camp early next year. “This could not have been held without the valuable contributions of our sponsors. “Thanks to the Learn Earn Legend program, Miwatj, the Office of Sport and Recreation, Tennis Australia and Power and Water for their valuable contributions.” She also put out a special thanks to Ian Goolagong, of Tennis Australia, and Erin Bormann, of Tennis NT, for being there to coach the students on the day.

GAFL season ends on a high GOVE’S GAFL footy season ended on a high last Friday night, when players and team staff came together for their 2013 presentation at the Arnhem Club bowling green. Nguykal player and runner Nathan Djerrkura won the GAFL Gary Dhurrkay Medal for Best and Fairest for 2013; the GAFL’s equivalent to the AFL’s Brownlow Medal. Nathan edged above plenty of tough and worthy competition, including Djarrak’s captain Longy, to take out the award. There was no footy played on the night, but instead a few games of bowls were held as the GAFL celebrated a successful season, which saw Yirrkala team Nguykal walk away with their first premiership trophy in 10 years. GAFL players and support staff celebrated a successful 2013 season, with Nguykal player Nathan Djerrkura (centre) winning the GAFL Gary Dhurrkay Medal.
Tigers growl to glory at Dave Langridge Memorial By TIM SCHMIDT and MATT GARRICK THE sun was shining down at Hindle Oval when the Gove Touch Football Association held the annual Dave Langridge Memorial Round Robin, last Saturday, October 19. The tournament is run every year in memory of Dave Langridge, a much-loved member of the community and of the Gove Touch Football Association who passed away from bowel cancer. Long-time player and referee
Kezia Majid said the day was held to celebrate Dave and what he was all about. “He was always down here at touch, encouraging others and always helping out wherever he could. “Reffing, doing anything he could, whenever he could, and just happy while doing it.” The round-robin tournament is now into its fifth year. All proceeds from team entry and food sales were donated to the Australian Bowel Cancer Foundation, supporting Australians with bowel cancer
through advocacy, awareness, education, support and research. Eight teams played on the day, six from Gove and two community teams from Yirrkala and Ramingining. Gove Touch Football Association committee member Matt Kidner said it was a great day out on the field. “Thanks to Zoe, Vic and Steph for their great work in setting up the day, and the rest of the committee members, particularly to Standford for reffing all day, and to all the other refs as well, they did a
great job. “It was an excellent day, really close competition, and really good teams. “It was also great to get the community teams from Yirrkala and Ramo out here as well. “Thanks to everyone who came down and watched or played, the generous support from the community was great.” After a hard-fought afternoon, town team The Tigers came out victorious, beating Shufflers in overtime to end a one-all tied score in the last minute.
