GOVE can often be an unlikely meeting place - this was proven last Saturday night, when seven Santas bumped into Australia’s first Indigenous female senator Nova Peris in the Town Hall. Ms Peris (centre) was in town to speak with community members about Rio Tinto’s decision to shut the refinery, while the Santas Lyn, Jo, Rebbeca, Paula, Deb with Jill and Donna at the front - were there for the huge Women’s Gift Exchange event. Macfarlane’s offer a dud “ Gove not on Giles’s agenda in Canberra

CHIEF minister Adam Giles has made it very clear that the closure of the refinery in Gove and the loss of 1200 jobs and the disastrous impact this will have on our community is not on his or the CLP government’s list of priorities. Electoral News It is unforgiveable that by NT Member for Nhulunbuy he could attend the COAG LYNNE WALKER meeting in Canberra last week and fail to put the case for Gove front and centre. How is it that Adam Giles can talk up grand plans for developing northern Australia amongst premiers and the Prime Minister, but remain silent on the bleak future of the North-East Arnhem region with the demise of the Territory’s largest private employer? How is it that Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he expects to announce funding packages for Holden workers this week and yet offer nothing to compensate workers and businesses who will be so badly impacted by the loss of our major industry? An industry worth $500m a year to the Territory economy How is it that other major industry closures have lead time - four years for Holden - and we have none? Rio Tinto’s haste to cut their losses and depart at break-neck speed is as shameful as the inaction of Giles and Abbott to implore the company to provide more time for the adjustment. And to top it off, we have Resources Minister Ian Macfarlane, who told us pre- election that “Tony Abbott will save your town”, last week issued a media release offering Centrelink support and 1800 numbers for counselling and financial advice. Seriously? The silence and the absence of the federal government and any of its ministers, including senator Nigel Scullion, is astounding. I am grateful, however, for the visits last week of three of my federal Labor colleagues; Gary Gray MP (shadow minister for resources), Warren Snowdon MP and senator Nova Peris who were able to meet with many people in Nhulunbuy and take some strong messages back to Canberra. IN the meantime, I send best wishes to all for a safe and peaceful festive season. For those lucky enough to enjoy a break, I hope it provides not only time with friends and loved ones but time to take stock and plan for what is a difficult year ahead. FINALLY, a special thank you to the sisterhood of Gove who packed the town hall on Saturday night for the brilliant Women’s Gift Exchange. Thank you, Rachel Blundell, Kelly Thomson and the many wonderful women who worked with you. Laughter is good medicine indeed.

AFTER more than two weeks of silence, the Federal Government has outlined a Commonwealth Assistance Package for Gove residents. The “package” directs Gove residents to line up in Centrelink and see what assistance they could be eligible for, or call a 1800 number for free financial advice. Business owners have described the announcement as “abandonment”, while the local member Lynne Walker said it was an “outrage”. Founder of Gorrkbuy Industrial Supplies (GIS) Denise Fincham, who has been working in business and regional development in Gove for more than 30 years, said the community had been abandoned. “It’s extremely disappointing. “I really thought the Federal Government would recognise their responsibility to this part of Australia, but clearly they’re not

interested in assisting us. “The whole community is feeling a sense of abandonment.” Ms Fincham noted that down south, the government has rushed forward to offer assistance to those affected by the closure of car-maker Holden in 2017, while up here there has been silence. “So much for the rhetoric of Prime Minister Tony Abbott as him being the ‘PM of Northern Australia’ and ‘PM of Indigenous Affairs’. “The only way we’ll ever see anything up here is if the community stays strong and united in our lobbying efforts. “Then the Federal Government will be forced to recognise the

importance of this region to the country, and see that structural readjustment packages are warranted to spur social and economic progression.” Local MLA Lynne Walker said the long-awaited announcement of Federal Government assistance was a slap in the face for Nhulunbuy residents. “The offer was an insult and did not put forward any options to support the investigation of alternative social and economic outcomes for the town. “This so-called offer fails to recognise Gove is home for many, many families and we want to stay.” She said Mr Macfarlane

ignored the fact that many Indigenous residents are among those who won’t be going anywhere either, as this is their land. “Basically Mr Macfarlane is offering a counselling service, 1800 numbers and Centrelink. “It is heartless and an outrage. There’s absolutely no offer of a structural adjustment package that might help reduce the economic and social impact of the refinery closure.” Federal Minister for Human Services Marise Payne said his department would work to ensure that “those affected can quickly claim income support and other available help”. “People can access Centrelink support through the department’s Nhulunbuy service centre, including referrals to other Commonwealth Government assistance that may be available for their individual circumstances.” To view the entire package announcement, type ‘Commonwealth Assistance Package for Nhulunbuy’ into Google.

First steps made to form Gove committee THE first steps were made last Thursday, December 12, towards forming a new Community Advisory Committee set to help plan the future of Gove. A community meeting was held at the Town Hall, where residents had a chance to voice their concerns about how the committee is set-up. The committee will be set-up with the purpose of looking after the interests of the many different groups in the region, from business owners to sporting organisations, traditional owners, churches and many more. Each of these sectors have been asked to nominate one or two members of their group, to vie for

representation in the committee, which will be made up of about 20 people. Senior Public Servant Mike Chiodo, who is the On-Ground Coordinator for Gove during this period of change for the region, said those entering the committee will be asked to “leave their agendas at the door”. “The Territory Government is establishing a Community Advisory Committee, to consult with the public after Rio Tinto’s announcement. “The Committee will provide community input on issues relating to operational, development and planning activities during the

transitional period.” A number of residents at the meeting voiced their suspicion about the possibility of government intervention distracting the purposes of this community group. Mr Chiodo expressed that while he will be involved in facilitating the setting-up of the committee, after the committee was set-up, its power would lie firmly in the hands of the community. From this group of 20 or so, two people will be chosen to take the findings and requests of the committee to a taskforce set-up in Darwin. “The Committee will also become a key mechanism for

ongoing community consultation and provide information and input into the Gove Taskforce,” Mr Chiodo said. The Gove Taskforce will be made up of Territory Government, Australian Government, Rio Tinto, the Northern Land Council and community representatives with a focus on developing sustainable economic activities for Gove. Nominations are now open for the Community Advisory Committee, but do close soon. If you would like more information on how to get involved, visit the NT Government website at www. nt.gov.au/gove or drop into the Gove Community Support Centre.

Arnhem rock royalty end year on a high note THE past and the future of East Arnhem Land rock and roll came together last week, for a recording session in Nhulunbuy’s ARDS/ Yolngu Radio studios. The past was represented by members of legendary rock group Yothu Yindi, and the future by rising stars, East Journey. Gluing the team together was NT Australian of the Year for 2013, singer-songwriter Shellie Morris. Former Yothu Yindi members Ben Hakalitz and Buruka Tau, along with Ms Morris, also mentored the boys from EJ, giving them advice from their long careers in the music industry. EJ singer Rrawun Maymuru, who has this year fronted stages across Australia, including in Broome, Sydney, and at the 50th Anniversary of the Bark Petitions in Yirrkala, said working with the musicians was a privilege.

“I think this type of thing is what we’ll be doing in the future - teaching the younger ones coming up. “This mentoring gives great opportunities to young bands like us, and I’m so grateful to learn from these musicians - it’s very exciting.” Rrawun said it was all part of EJ’s musical quest in following the footsteps of Yothu Yindi, and in trying to break into the mainstream East Journey members hit the high notes in the studio last week, with NT market. “People have to believe in Australian of the Year for 2013, Shellie Morris. and discipline. themselves - they have to find continue to work closely with East “We were encouraging East Journey and their manager Susan the key inside them, and if they use the key properly they’ll open the path Journey that their foundation of Sandery, with the new track due for Yolngu culture is something that they release in April 2014. to the mainstream.” Ms Morris said during their time should always keep strong, as they As for the Yolngu Radio studios, in the studio, as well as laying down carry on the legacy and vision of Dr they’re currently open for business, a new track, Bright Lights, Big City, Yunupingu,” she said. so anyone looking for some studio Mr Tau, Mr Hakalitz and Yothu time can contact Studio Coordinator the group workshopped things like commitment, teamwork, leadership Yindi bassist Stu Kellaway will Ava Dub (0439 432 913).

Former minister’s story needs refining FORMER Federal Minister for Resources Gary Gray has revealed he had been aware Rio Tinto had “no intention” of keeping the refinery open since he visited here back in early August. Mr Gray, who was the resources minister in the Kevin Rudd-lead Labor government earlier this year, revealed the fact at a meeting with business leaders in Nhulunbuy on December 10. He said it had been “apparent to me that Rio’s intentions were not to keep the refinery open” when he visited the region for a three-day trip at the start of August. Chairman of the East Arnhem Chamber Dave Suter called the meeting “counterproductive” and said Mr Gray’s comment that he had known about the impending closure since August did not inspire him with confidence in the words of the Shadow Federal Government. “He stated at the meeting he knew in August that Rio were to close the plant and what did he do? “Not a lot it would seem.” Mr Suter said the meeting would’ve been more productive if the Shadow Minister had talked about ways local businesses could possibly access Commonwealth packages for regions in crisis. “They could have given us a brief on them as that is about the extent of what will come from government - if any of us businesses are eligible for them.” As to any funding packages or contingencies put on the table by the current government since the refinery’s closure, they go as far as suggesting Nhulunbuy residents would be entitled free financial advice from Centrelink. No solid contingency plans or funding packages specialised for Gove residents or businesses have yet been identified.

Union says ‘Gove needs more time’ A UNION leader has called on Rio Tinto to extend the time period planned for shutting down the refinery, saying the short timeframe is “not fair on workers or on the community”. Rio’s plan to scale back production from January over six to eight months is not enough time to prepare their workforce and the town for life after the refinery, said National Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) Paul Bastian, who visited Gove last Thursday. “Some workers will admittedly want to go as soon as they can, that’s fair enough, but for a community to make decisions about what life’s going to be like after this refinery goes, they need to have the time to make an informed decision.” He said a longer time period would give the chance for an independent social-economic impact statement to be put together. “This would empower the community to know what they’re facing. “That would help them frame their discussions with Rio, with the NT Government and with the Feds.” He also said the impact statement could supply proper information about what the impact is going to be to the community after a bulk chunk of the population leaves town. His call echoes a statement m a d e b y l o c a l M L A Ly n n e Walker late last month, where she urged the NT Government to “appoint independent highly

Mr Bastian said the Federal Government were not helping the cause of sustaining the manufacturing industry in the NT by neglecting Gove’s current crisis. “I can guarantee you now, if this was in Adelaide, or in Sydney, or in Melbourne, Tony Abbott would be up here with his fluro vest.” Territory Organiser for AMWU Bryan Wilkins said the vast majority of the union’s 150-strong local membership wanted to stay in Gove. “This is their home and they

want to stay.” He said the community needed real time to adjust to Rio’s decision, and this has not been granted as it might have been elsewhere. He compared the short timeframe given to Gove workers to the lengthy three-year time-frame Holden car manufacturing workers down south have been allotted to consider their futures before their workplaces shut-down for good in 2017. AMWU held a meeting with their local members last Thursday afternoon, at the Surf Club, to try to answer some of their concerns. Their members from Rio’s local workforce include fitters, boilermakers, diesel mechanics and mine operators.

Students stomp out mental health stigma

ABOVE: High School teachers and students recently relived the fun of Odd Socks Day.

RIGHT: NOTHING ODD HERE: School Councillor Kasey Lloyd was gifted a cheque for Nhulunbuy High School from Grow NT Branch Manager Anne Pike. WHAT are the odds of Nhulunbuy High being gifted $1000 for getting their kids to wear the wrong socks on their feet? Pretty good, it seems; the school have entered and won a nation-wide competition called Grow Odd Socks Day, which recently encouraged students to dress up in different socks for the day, to raise awareness of mental health issues. Held in October, the day coincided with

Mental Health Week, as a way to help stomp out mental health stigma and discrimination. School Councillor Kasey Lloyd said it was important that students learned about mental health awareness at an early stage. “And that to seek help is a good thing, and there are plenty of resources around the school and town that they can use.” Odd Socks Day was an idea by non-profit organisation Grow, which works to help get rid of

mental health stigma. Branch Manager of Grow NT Anne Pike, who visited the school recently to present the award, said stigma could have a devastating impact on the lives of people

with a mental illness and their family and friends. “It stops people from getting help and recovering.” Nhulunbuy High had registered their school to take part in Odd Socks

Day, which put them in a prize draw with schools around Australia, and they walked away the victors. The money will go towards education materials for the school.

STUDENTS stepping into Year 12 in 2014 in Nhulunbuy have been assured that the upheaval surrounding the refinery's closure will not interrupt their most-important year of school. Senior Public Servant Mike Chiodo (above), who has been appointed as the government's On-ground Coordinator in Gove, said the Department of Education would work closely with the principals of Nhulunbuy Primary School, Nhulunbuy High School and both school councils to maintain quality education provision in the town. "Full Year 11 and 12 subject offerings will be sustained throughout the 2014 school year. "Education service delivery will be closely monitored next year to ensure both schools con-

tinue to meet the needs of the community and region. "The Chief Executive of the Department of Education has confirmed that there will be no change to education services or permanent staff during the first semester of 2014, with any adjustments made to education services after this time undertaken in full consultation with school councils and in the context of ensuring that all stages of schooling are sustained." CEO of the Department of Education Ken Davies visited the region on December 3, where he affirmed Mr Chiodo's statements. "Maintaining a quality schooling program from preschool to Year 12 will ensure that families living in Nhulunbuy can continue

A HALF-million dollar project promised for Yirrkala that seemed destined for the scrap-heap after Labor lost the last election, has been given the green light by the new government. After months of uncertainty whether it would or wouldn’t happen, the Federal Government has confirmed funding of $460,000 would be granted to assist in building the Gamarrwa Digital Learning Centre. This project will extend the Buku Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre by incorporating a public multiterminal Digital Learning Centre. The centre will serve the Yolngu community as a digital training and education centre, a digital library, and cultural archive access point. The space will contain 10 public digital terminals, lecturing facilities and a centralised workstation for the centre’s coordinator. Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion confirmed last Wednesday, December 11, that $5.455m would be granted for this project, along with five other projects for communities in the NT electorate of Lingiari. “The Community Development Grants Programme makes good on our election commitment to support infrastructure that promotes stable, secure and viable local and regional economies. “Our Government is committed to providing long-term improvements in social and economic infrastructure for regional communities,” Senator Scullion said. The new centre was originally pegged for completion in March 31, 2015. The other projects confirmed by the government included upgrades to Tennant Creek sporting facilities, to the Katherine Base Hospital, the construction of a Christmas Island Senior Citizens Centre, and upgrades to an Alice Springs tennis clubhouse and football stadium. Funding recipients will be contacted shortly and asked to provide detailed project information, including project outcomes and benefits, planning, costs and delivery time frames.

The man left kava at Gove Airport after running from an off-duty police officer on December 3. He was arrested by Nhulunbuy Police on December 5 at the airport, after trying to board a plane under a false name. The male also had a suspended sentence of 21 days added to his sentence for bringing kava into Nhulunbuy back in October. The total sentence given to the man was three months and 21 days. “This is a great result for Nhulunbuy Police and the community,”

Bus service to continue LOCAL organisation YBE has agreed to continue operating the popular Gove Peninsular Bus Service as part of the Regional and Remote Bus Trial Program. It was announced last week the trial would be extended for an additional three years. The Gove service began in September 2010 and provided five services a day, five days a week and connected Yirrkala, Ski Beach and Wallaby Beach to the Nhulunbuy Township, with a flat $5 fare being charged per trip. After three years of operation, over 32,000 passengers have used the service - many of who are local indigenous workers. The NT Government recently committed funding to support the extension of the Gove service. The trial was initially operated on a trial basis and was developed through a partnership involving YBE, the NT Department of Transport, Rio Tinto, the Commonwealth Government, the East Arnhem Shire and Local Tradition Owner organisations.

Christmas warms up with a shot of spirit

TOP and BOTTOM: On the Hill of Crosses, Siauliai, Lithuania. Photo: M Garrick. BACKGROUND: Santa and his reindeers at the Walkabout Lodge.

MY grandmother grew up in a remote Lithuanian village, smack bang in the middle of war torn Europe. Down the cobbled track from where she lived, there was a Hill of Crosses - pretty much a large dirt mound with hundreds of religious wooden crosses staked into it. Every time a new regime rolled in, whether it was the Nazis or the communists - troops from either side of the severed continent - they would rip the villagers’ sacred icons from out of the hill. But a strange thing kept happening; without fail, each morning after such a destruction, the crosses were once again standing. How it had happened was the villagers, those huddled pilgrims, would go out quietly during the night, and replant crosses into the soil as symbols of their unwavering faith. Come morning, the troops would return and tear them down once more. But lo and behold, by dawn the next day, sunlight would illuminate a hundred standing crosses. Funnily, I have noticed a similar spectacle of people power occurring here in Gove. But not with crosses; with Christmas decorations. Against all odds, at a time when the powers-that-be have severely threatened to destroy the town’s festive season, Goveites have come out in droves to make Christmas brighter and better than ever. Huge, lavish, light displays adorn the fronts of houses, the airport glitters with colourful cheer and the Walkabout Lodge’s reception is covered in more glowing trinkets than Sydney’s David Jones window display in December. Driving along the streets, lined with houses where inside residents are no doubt wreaked with questions about where their lives will head to next, the exteriors are lit up like birthday cakes. And much like those rural Lithuanians; every morning, after the fierce wet season rains have demolished their little shrines to Santa, locals loyally set them back up, re-inflate their snowmen balloons and dust the mango juice from their sleighs. Christmas spirit is a funny old thing - but out here, these lights are glimmering with the hope and resilience of the human spirit. And that’s the light that will guide us onwards, long after the festivities of Christmas have past. Merry Christmas to you Gove, thanks for keeping it cheery. Matt Garrick, Editor.

Silent Night, East Arnhem style THIS festive season, Christmas crooner Bing Crosby has got some competition. Yolngu singer Stewart Gaykamangu has recorded and released his own version of the Christmas favourite, Silent Night, entirely in Yolngu Matha language. Stewart, who has recently replaced the tropical heat of North-East Arnhem Land to live in Central Australia, said recording the song brought him back to his people. “It makes me proud to sing this Christmas song in the language of my Homeland. “I hope people hear it around the world and think of my people.” Stewart’s career is currently on the rise, with his song Lorrpu winning NT Pop Song of the Year and his debut album due for release in 2014 from CAAMA Music, the Indigenous record label based in Alice Springs. This year was a busy one for Stewart, with performances at the Mbantua Festival, the National Indigenous Remote Media Festival in Ntaria and the Indigenous Economic Development Forum in Alice Springs, where his piano playing and stirring vocals impressed delegates from all over the country. A YouTube video of his version of Silent Night can also be watched at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=KHj6aUCb5iw.

Local dancer hunts for a national audience FROM the waters of Yalangbara homeland to television screens across the nation - it’s a giant leap, but dancer Milika Marika is used to making those. Milika, who recently took part in a Circus Oz-run performance workshop, was last week the subject matter for a series on NITV.

Producers for the series Move It Mob Style, a popular dance show on the indigenous television network, travelled to North East Arnhem Land to film a profile on Milika who is one of the lead dancers in the series. The all-day film shoot took place at Yalangbara and included Milika’s

father, Banula Marika. This was followed by a visit to Buku Larrngay Art Centre in Yirrkala. Milika, who is also a ranger for Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation, will also be choreographing two dance routines to music from East Journey for Move It Mob Style. The crew will also

be filming Milika performing his hip hop composition in Sydney in January. While in town, the Move It Mob Style crew also filmed East Journey recording in the ARDS/

Yolngu Radio studio, and captured the important land and sea country work that rangers undertake with Dhimurru to showcase the region at its best The resulting televi-

sion series and special Move It Mob Style Series Four will air each weekday at 5pm on NITV from March 2014 - and since the digital switchover on December 10, locals in

Sowing seeds for Yirrkala's future

Stay crocwise this wet THE wet season is upon us here in Gove, and with the extra rain comes the increased risk of crocodiles on the move. Minister for Parks and Wildlife Bess Price has urged people to be CROCWISE this wet season. "There is no room for complacency when it comes to crocodiles in our waterways. Crocodiles can move about, and you must always assume that any body of water in the Top End and coastal areas could contain a crocodile. "In some places, the risk of a saltwater crocodile entering the area is reduced to a level where it is possible to swim. "However, even in those locations there is still a small risk that a saltwater crocodile may enter an area unobserved." In all other locations, she said people need to assume that a saltwater crocodile could be present at any time and behave accordingly. "People need to be CROCWISE and know how to enjoy the waters in safety." Parks and Wildlife has active saltwater crocodile management programs for public water bodies around the Top End, to reduce the likelihood of a fatal attack.

DURING 2013, more than just flowers have been blossoming inside Yirrkala's Nursery. What began as a one-man labour of love for Ethnobotanist Gareth Wise has morphed into a healthy enterprise, giving around 20 local Yolngu meaningful work to help improve their community. Just last year, Gareth said it was "just me pushing mowers around, doing everything". Now, he heads a fully-fledged organisation called Nuwul Environmental Services Inc, which offers work to men and women around Yirrkala. One of the workers, Bakitju Yunupingu, said it was not just a good way for him to keep healthy, but a way for him to keep his community healthy too. "We feel good, happy, we're helping each other and looking after our land." Gareth said watching the business bloom had made it an absolutely sensational year. "The men and ladies have been turning up every day, very enthusiastic. "This kind of work helps them keep a foot in both cultures. We're not here to turn them into whitefellas - we're

here to help them become positive, functional individuals on their own terms." Working alongside Miwatj Employment and Participation Ltd and the East Arnhem Shire, the team from Nuwul have undertaken essential community projects this year such as removing the illegal tip from Rocky Bay Road. "They were out there every day, sweating in the hot sun," said Gareth. "They've put in a lot to this business, and been fully dedicated to their community." Now, along with all the other businesses of the region, Yirrkala Nursery looks to an uncertain future. Gareth said since the announcement that the refinery would be shut, he has not had one customer come through his gates. "Based on last year, when we had plenty of customers at this time of the year, we've stocked accordingly. "All of that may go to waste." He said he will now look at how to begin remodelling the business, hopefully without reducing staff, due to the great level of Yolngu engagement it brings to the community

Carols by Canlelight 2013 MESSAGES of joy, hope and Christmas spirit boomed through the grounds of Nhulunbuy Christian College on Sunday, December 8, at the Combined Churches Carols by Candlelight. The regions churches, including Uniting, Baptist, Oasis, Forward in Faith, Seventh Day Adventist, Catholic, Free Weslyn Church Tonga and Yirrkala Church, all sang separate items giving their individual spin on festive favourites. The outdoor hall of NCC was filled to the brim with revellers who came along to watch and partake in the cheerful occasion. Event organiser Michelle Haines said the night sent the positive message out that whatever religion people adhered to, their God would offer them hope through these troubled times. She also put a big thank you out to Santa’s Little Helpers, also known as Ava from ARDS/Yolngu Radio, NORFORCE, Woolworths and Nhulunbuy Bakery.

Women’s Gift Exchange, Town Hall, Dec. 14 A FEW blokes around Gove might have been wondering where their wives had got to last Saturday night - they were all partying at the Women’s Gift Exchange in the Town Hall. The event was held as a chance for local ladies

from all over town to get together and mingle with people they may not have bumped into before, share gifts, a laugh and a few champagnes. The ladies were treated to a three-course meal and everyone brought a gift to give out, to make sure

nobody went home empty handed. Organiser Rachel Blundell said it was all in the name of fun, and for lifting moral around town. “It sold out in two-days, so we could tell there was a need for it, and that everybody wanted to

forget about the town’s troubles for a night and have a good time.” Ms Blundell said she couldn’t have done it all without her Santa’s Little Helpers, Kerry Asplin and Sandy Laverty, and co-host Kelly Thomson.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Your family life has changed so much recently that you may not feel as though you fit in like you used to. Spend more time with relatives to fix this. Romance. You may be interested in getting a long-term friendship onto a slightly less platonic footing. How you go about doing this is up to you.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A relative may be envious of all that you have. Be sure to remind them about how hard you have worked to get to where you are now. Romance. Your partner may be having second thoughts about a recent decision you two have agreed on. Prompt them about this and talk it out!

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

FOR KIDS

The Moon/Mars Midpoint now in your sign will give you a burst of energy, just when you need it. Recent events may have left you feeling exhausted. Romance. You’ll be a little under the weather and will not be in the mood for going out. A night on the sofa is just what you need!

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

A meeting with a new friend will help to consolidate your relationship. Don’t be put off by this person’s appearance! They may have more eccentric taste than you do. Romance. Don’t be too demanding with your partner, even if you feel that they are not pulling their entire weight.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

A recent difficulty will finally be solved thanks to the help of a complete stranger. Be sure to show your gratitude for their help. Romance. You will be in a very forgiving mood this week! Don’t be quick to forgive everyone, however. It’s OK to be upset about things that were done intentionally.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) You will have a strong urge to get away from your daily routine. Your mind may be on a recent trip rather than on your work. You can daydream at home! Romance. In order to gain confidence, you’ll need to do things by yourself, without your mate making the calls all of the time.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

A recent change at work has really thrown you for a loop. You will need to obtain extra training in order to feel comfortable with this new technology. Romance. Your talents are not being appreciated properly by your partner. Simply telling them that you feel hurt by this may be enough.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) A careless comment by a friend may be slightly embarrassing. You will need to find a way to stop this from happening in the near future. Romance. Stop worrying about your partner’s bad habits. You are not likely to change them. Remember, they were doing this when you met!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.

SOLUTIONS No. 179

Worries about your appearance may have much less basis in reality than you think. Don’t allow yourself to be judged by your outer beauty. You have much more to give than that. Romance. A cheerful comment from someone that you admire will give your confidence a very important boost.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

Don’t allow other people’s negativity to hold you back. You will be better off without their advice. Seek out people who are more optimistic. Romance. A passing glance from a person whom you hardly know will cheer you up for the rest of the week. You’ll find more people smiling at you.

 letters to the editor

Saved from buff bashing by Numbulwar’s Lancelot LAST month I ventured down to Numbulwar, a remote community 260km south-east of Nhulunbuy as the crow flies. On my first morning there I decided to go for my daily run from town out to the barge landing to watch the sunrise. I thought it would be a good idea to protect myself with a stick and fight off any cheeky dogs. Little did I know that 6am is buff-o’clock in this country. On the way back from the barge landing it wasn’t until I saw piles of steamy buff-poo and fresh tracks that I knew I was ‘up the creek, with a stick but no paddle’. A car came screeching up behind me and a tradie rolled down his window shouting, “You might want to cross the road, love! There’s a big buff up ahead”. The ute hooned off, leaving me in a cloud of red dust. Sure enough in the distance I saw it; Big. Brown. Buffalo. Frozen in fear I stopped in panic, knowing full well a flimsy stick wasn’t going to help me this time. Luckily - to my surprise - old mate Lance (above right), a Numbulwar local, came hurtling down the main road and swung around, bailing me into his troopy. Lance escorted me safely back to town and told me stories about the buffalo that inhabit the

area and proudly showed me his freshly caught ‘Queenie’. Thanks, Lance. Yo u s a v e d t h e day mate. What a champ! Ali Thorn (right), Nhulunbuy

Tennis young gun shoots for the top

Second and fifth best female players in the NT, Caitlyn Mitchell and Nicky Mayer. 17-YEAR-OLD tennis hot-shot Caitlyn Mitchell was taught the tricks of the trade by Gove Tennis’s Head Coach Nicky Mayer. These days, Caitlyn sits three spots above Nicky in the Northern Territory rankings, as the second highest-ranked female player in the NT. But Nicky holds no grudges - on the contrary, she is proud to be one of those who helped build Gove’s potential future pro to the point she’s at now. Caitlyn returned to Gove recently, where she has resumed tennis training after completing her Year 12 studies at the prestigious Pro One Tennis Academy on the Gold Coast. She’s been more focused on school than tennis over the last

year, and now it’s time to get back into the game. “It will take a lot of hard work, commitment, and I’ll probably have to travel a lot, but I’m ready to take those steps,” she said. Caitlyn is currently in the process of deciding whether she wants to head to the United States to study at college on a tennis scholarship, where she plans to refine her game even further. She currently has five offers for different US colleges sitting on her table. Studying in the US would be the first step towards her dream. “After four years of college, the hope would be that I turn pro.” Nicky said for Caitlyn to have come from our remote town, to be we she was now was a massive

achievement. “For her to have gotten into the academy, and now to be looking at scholarships, it’s just amazing. “It took about 12 months, before she went to the academy, for her to decide that tennis was the path that she wanted to take. “And since making that crucial decision, she’s just shone.” Caitlyn said she was also grateful for all the support her mum and dad had given her along the way. Nicky and Caitlyn headed to Brisbane last Friday for an NT tennis tour. About 30 kids from the Territory were competing in a teams event and individual championships, with Caitlyn competing in the NT 17s team, which Nicky was coaching.

A brave new world for Gove Tennis GOVE Tennis now faces some interesting times - Rio Tinto’s announcement will mean a certain shake-up for the club. To fit in with these times, the club have altered their membership structure. “We’ve adjusted fees so we now offer a term-by-term enrolment to accommodate families who might be leaving throughout next year.” Gove Tennis wants to keep its membership numbers as high as they can, as the town goes through radical changes. Nicky is also in conversations with Tennis NT and Tennis Australia, seeking funding to try to continue running their successful remote indigenous sports programs. People can join the club under the new structure from now - contact Nicky at tennisgove@tennisgove. com.au or (0407 460 487). There will be a sign-on day on February 1, the first Saturday of Term One, 2014.
