Day on the green
AS luck of the Irish would have it, a cyclone set for Nhulunbuy never arrived, and a big St Patrick’s Day party at Gove Country Golf Club went ahead as planned last Sunday.
Punters came out dressed in their greens for an afternoon of festivities that included golf, pies, a waterslide and some obligatory glasses of Guinness.
Pictured here are the Best-Dressed team, Coral, Mango, Denise and Glenys, enjoying a couple refreshments after a morning on the greens. More photos inside, page 11.>>

In regards to Yirrkala School, Mr Davies said that: “There is no ceiling on the staffing formula if the attendance rates and enrolment rates are sustained. “ A n d i f t h e r e ’s a demonstrated need for additional teachers, then of course we will be providing them. “But right now we’re
asking the school to have a look at the way it’s resourced its programs and to make sure all of the programs are adequately supported with the resources they’ve got.” He also mentioned that the government was keen to look further into Nhulunbuy High School being “used as a regional vehicle to support secondary education”.

Matt shooting for more than the stars FROM the age of eightyears-old, photography has been a part of local Matt Burman’s life. A passion for shooting photos started then, when his father presented him with a hand-me-down Yashica SLR full-frame camera. Following this moment, him and his dad would go out bush together, hiking, camping and all the while learning about the delights of nature, and snapping it as they went. Decades later, Matt’s love of photography and nature continues to captivate not just himself, but nature and art lovers across the region. His images of land
Time to battle brains this Saturday CYCLONE Gillian threatened to blow into town last Saturday night, and in doing so blew out the hopes of those wanting to have some fun at Rotary Trivia Night, which had to be postponed. Now, Rotary Trivia Night has been rescheduled for this Saturday, March 22, at the Nhulunbuy Town Hall from 7pm, and is set to blow some minds. Teams of six will battle brains in a night of fun and trivia, with great prizes including cash and fuel vouchers, up for grabs. Rotary President Leanne Parise said the huge annual event was set to be a cracker. “As always, everyone is welcome to get dressed up in themed team costumes, and battle for the best-dressed team!” Tickets are still available from Lynne Walker’s Office, but locals are urged to get in quickly.
and seascapes in the East Arnhem region have become online hits, and a new calendar he has created has enough orders for it to sell out before even being released. And he says for him, despite years in the game, his joy in the process of photography is getting even bigger. “The most-exciting thing
about taking photos is the beauty of actually catching that moment in time that you were blessed to see, and be able to hold on to it forever.” Matt often treks to farflung spots in order to get the perfect shot. “When I started out, with like-minded photography friends, we’d go out and climb a mountain in the middle of the night and hold
up in a cave for an hour or so, just to get that perfect dawn shot.” And he’s still getting up at dawn, on his days off from work, to capture those special shots. Just last week he rose before the sun did to capture a spectacular storm front rolling across Shady Beach, in Yirrkala, as the sky turned to pink with the coming day.
This weekend, Matt will be displaying some of his works at the Arafura Times 2013 Photos of the Year Exhibition, on Friday, March 21, and Sunday, March 23, at 4C’s Community Centre. Full details, What’s On guide, page 8.

ALTHOUGH the town braced under a Cyclone Warning last week, the tropical storm expected to hit Nhulunbuy on Sunday, March 16, barely raised a breeze. Tropical Cyclone Gillian was downgraded to a tropical low on the afternoon of Saturday, March 15. It ended up travelling far north of the Gove Peninsula, leaving Nhulunbuy to soak in just 19.6mm of rain on Sunday. The cyclone, which was moving north-west at 15km per hour, got as close as about 290km east north-east of Nhulunbuy. After it was downgraded to a low, it got within 220km of the town. Police Senior Sergeant Alex Brennan praised the work of the community in preparing for the storm at the end of last week. “Thanks to everyone working with the Local Emergency Management Committee and those around town who prepared. “Everyone communicated well to quickly clean-up Nhulunbuy and the community.” At 2pm on Sunday afternoon, the town was taken off Cyclone Watch, with the Warning removed the afternoon prior. Snr Sgt Brennan said if nothing else, the preparation effort gave the town a good opportunity to have a clean-up. During these efforts, the Local Emergency Management Committee, made up of representatives from different parts of the community, met a number of times to organise the different aspects of cyclone preparation needed for the region. This included closing the pool and dropping the shade sails, organising alternative housing for those in need and ensuring the cyclone shelter at the hospital was ready. Emergency radio broadcasts were also undertaken by Gove FM. During this procedure, the community on Bremer Island was advised to evacuate, and there was added communication supplied to those living in remote homeland communities. Police have reminded residents that it is still cyclone season, and to make sure they have a cyclone kit stocked with essential items at the ready, and their yards kept clean and free from debris.

Rio’s legacy on the land << From Page 1 Principal Lawyer from the Environmental Defenders Office (NT) David Morris (right) visited the region recently, and said the public was being kept in the dark about environmental plans during this period. “Everyone I met down here is feeling like Rio, and, to an extent both the Federal and Northern Territory Governments, are being less than transparent in terms of what it means for this plant to be curtailed.” While in town, he met with organisations and individuals to discuss their concerns on this issue, and the possibility of taking legal action. “There’s a general concern about, apart from the obvious economic implications of Rio closing the refinery, what that means for the environment.” He said many questions remained unanswered. “When this refinery goes into its maintenance mode, what are the specifics of how the environment will be managed? “How often will they be checking on the security of dam walls at the red mud ponds?” He said some concerns raised to him centred around what impacts there could be on marine life and the traditional hunting methods of Traditional Owners. “What are they doing to prevent environmental harm?” The Environmental Defenders Office is a not-for-profit community
legal centre which specialises in public interest environmental law. Mr Morris said if and when he found a client, his organisation would be able to use legal mechanisms to try and access more detailed information about Rio’s plans. A spokesperson from Rio Tinto said the company was taking their commitment to environmental management very seriously. “This commitment will continue throughout the ramp-down and care and maintenance of the refinery. “Gove operates in accordance with an environmental management system. “As part of this system, environmental management standards and procedures are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect changes occurring at the operation.” The company said they would keep the management of the residual disposal area (the red mud ponds) as a high priority, and “appropriate procedures would be implemented during care andmaintenance of the refinery. “We will continue to have a team on site with the skills and experience to effectively manage environmental issues.” Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation, the organisation that acts as caretaker for much of the East Arnhem Land environment on behalf of traditional landowners, have said they would welcome scrutiny. Executive Officer Steve Roeger said while Dhimurru enjoys a good working relationship with Rio, it
would not hurt for the company to receive scrutiny over this issue. “We welcome constructive scrutiny of what is going on. “It is important that measures being taken to protect the environment are transparent, and, of course, Rio Tinto is accountable. “We have a particular interest in ensuring that the process is conducted in a conscientious manner.” Mr Roeger said he didn’t think the Environmental Defenders Office would have any trouble finding someone who was willing to be their client to pursue the request for more information. Once they have found someone, their first step would be applying for a request for information kept by the mining company to be made public under a Freedom of Information Act. The organisation works on issues such as this pro bono - there would be no cost to the client other than a $30 disbursement fee for the
Walsh gets a 44% pay increase prices slide. Rio said last week it had doubled the shareholding requirement of the CEO to a value of four times the base salary. The company “recognizes the importance of aligning executives’ interests with those of shareholders and they are therefore expected to build up and maintain a meaningful shareholding,” it said. Other executives are required to own a shareholding valued at three times their base salary, it said. While Walsh, whose shareholding matches the requirement, is contracted to Dec. 31 next year, the company can terminate his employment for any reason at the end of this year, Rio said. Walsh was previously chief of the company’s iron-ore division, based in Perth, Western Australia. Rio paid relocation costs of A$206,000 when
RIO Tinto Group gave Chief Executive Officer Sam Walsh a 44 per cent pay increase last year after appointing him head of the world’a second-biggest mining company, Bloomberg.net reports. Walsh, 64, was paid A$10.1 million ($9.1 million), up from A$7 million a year earlier, London-based Rio said recently in its annual report. The figure includes salary, a cash bonus, shares, superannuation and other benefits, Rio said. His predecessor Tom Albanese was paid 4 million pounds ($6.7 million) in 2012. Walsh, a 23-year company veteran, has reduced costs by $2.3 billion, curbed spending plans and driven productivity gains since becoming CEO in January 2013 amid an industry wide push to preserve profitability as some commodity
he moved to London as CEO, and he receives a housing allowance and other benefits during his “secondment” there, it said. ANNUAL EARNINGS Bloomberg.net also reports Rio reported a 10 per cent increase in underlying profit to $10.2 billion last year. BHP Billiton Ltd., the largest mining company, posted underlying earnings of $11.2 billion for the fiscal year through June. “The short-term economic outlook points to a further consolidation of the global recovery as we start 2014,” Walsh said in the report. “However, macro risks abound and the potential for continued volatility remains significant. In the mining industry this is likely to drive further prudent investment behaviors while new supply gets absorbed by the market.”

Weaving of two worlds at Barunga SOME of the best-loved Indigenous performers from across Arnhem Land, and Australia, have been chosen for the program of this year’s Barunga Festival The festival is back for its 29th year, to be held in the small community of Barunga down the Central Arnhem Road from June 6 to 9. Barunga is known as a great opportunity to see and share the joy of participation in music, sport and culture, and experience the positive aspects of remote Indigenous community life. A diverse line-up of performers have been announced including Katherine’s Tom E Lewis, Nicky Bomba and his band Bustamento, central desert legends Yatulu Yatulu and Nabarlek - the ‘Rolling Stones of the Top End’ from West Arnhem Land, who will close out the 2014 music program. The festival also draws sports teams from across
the Territory to battle it out on the football field, basketball court and softball diamond. And the cultural program is both fun and a serious look into the cultural fabric of remote Aboriginal belief. This part of the program includes story telling, weaving workshops, didgeridoo making and spear throwing; all activities that visitors are encouraged to be a part of. The Bunggul (dancing) at sunset in front of the main stage is a time for guests to participate with dance leaders in the spirit of reconciliation and friendship. As musician John Butler said: “Barunga Festival is one of those gems in the cultural fabric of our country. “It’s a beautiful weaving of worlds. Ancient and contemporary, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, sport and song.” For more info, visit: www.barungafestival.com.au.

letters to the editor/comment Cyclone shelter for those who need it RESIDENTS of the Gove Peninsula have been reminded that there is a secure cyclone shelter available for those who do not have adequately proofed housing. A cyclone shelter exists next to Gove District Hospital, managed by Phil and Eleanor Sampson from Chaplaincy Australia. The shelter can house 280 people, and is meant to be used for periods of no longer than 12 hours. The main intention of the shelter is to house residents of Wallaby Beach (Biritjimi), as there is no rated cyclone building in their community. There are rated buildings in the communities of Ski Beach and Yirrkala where residents can gather. In Nhulunbuy, many of the Rio Tinto-owned houses have been checked and rated to handle a Category Four cyclone - which, if one hit, could entail wind gusts of up to 280km per hour. IN Australia’s political melting pot, Canberra, East Arnhem Land voices are making themselves heard. Earlier this month, Cultural Manager for the Yirralka Rangers Mungurrapin Maymuru visited the capital to give a number of lectures about important issues in this remote region. His first lecture was given at the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR) at the Australian National University (ANU). During his time in Canberra, Mungurru gave a lecture on Homelands and why they are important in a new course at ANU called Indigenous Peoples, Populations and Communities. Many students’ eyes and ears were opened wide as Mungurru talked about the vibrant homelands across North East Arnhem Land. The students were reportedly also

Mungurru also gave a seminar at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet about Growing Indigenous Cultural and Natural Resource Management - Opportunities and Barriers. This was the first seminar given in the reshaped department that now manages the majority of Indigenous policy. Mungurru spoke about the expanding Laynhapuy IPA as well as sea country, and why it is important that Yolngu sea rights are recognised. About 30 staff attended the seminar and many asked questions about homeland life. On his last day in the ACT, Mungurru was the guest of the local Ngunnawal Murumbung Yurung Murra Rangers, who took him out on the mountainous country near the towns of Tidbinbilla and Namadgi.

At the gove country golf club GOVE Country Golf Club was awash with teams of green last Sunday afternoon, for a huge St Patrick’s Day party. The day teed off with a golf Ambrose, won in the end by the team of Jeremy, Connolly, Sarah and Evan.
After golfers returned to the clubhouse, the fun was on for young and old, with steak and Guinness pies up for tucker, and some tasty stout on tap for those with a bit of a thirst. Outside, a waterslide was set up for the kids to play away the afternoon.
Club Manager Jamie Henderson thanked everyone for coming out and supporting the club, and said that renovations to their restaurant were coming along, and although opening date has been slightly delayed, it would be reopened someday soon.

CROSSWORD No. 190
SUDOKU No. 190
Your Lucky
Stars
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A group discussion will help you to come up with some ideas. You will be surprised what you can achieve if you put your minds together. This could encourage more meetings. Romance. Try not to disguise the way you feel. Confusing your partner about your needs will not help anyone who is involved.
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) You may need to back down this week, in order to keep your relations with your colleagues in good shape. Don’t feel like this puts you in a lower position, however. Romance. Try to think up a pleasant surprise for your partner. They are feeling a little down at the moment and could use cheering up.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)
FOR KIDS
A surprisingly frank discussion could help to clear the air. This will be an excellent time to really get to grips with this matter. Honesty is the only thing that will help! Romance. Your relationship may be on rocky ground this week. Be careful not to do anything too drastic. You can mend this issue.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) Someone that you have known for many years will shortly be going through a difficult patch. They will be grateful for your assistance. Even the smallest gesture will have great effect. Romance. Your partner may seem ungrateful for the things you have done. However, it’s likely they just didn’t think to give thanks.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A secret which concerns a close friend must not be taken lightly. Your friend only told you the secret because they knew that you can be trusted. Keep that trust! Romance. Don’t take a flirtation at work too seriously. This person is not genuinely interested. They do this with everyone. Don’t get too upset.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Be very careful with a possession which may get stolen. This would not be of much value to a thief, but it would upset you to lose it. It’s best to put it in storage. Romance. You may have found it difficult to make some changes in your life, but now that you have accomplished them, you are pushing your mate.
FINDWORD No. 190 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Your friends will be impressed by your positive mood. This will be an excellent time to push through some changes which have been taking time to materialise. Romance. The Moon/Neptune Midpoint in your sign could make you a little too sensitive at times. Thankfully, your partner is very mindful of this.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may be feeling a little insecure. Try to think of some positive things which have been said to you recently. Keeping a small list will boost your confidence. Romance. You won’t be feeling your usual self. Don’t do anything you are unsure about. If in doubt, put off a decision for a few weeks.

MUDDY RIVER
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Your home life may seem a bit boring this week. Take advantage of this because it’s likely the calm before the storm. Next week will be very busy! Romance. Your relationship will soon be in better shape than it has been for some time. Try to find something to do in celebration! You both deserve it!
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Your friend’s attitude is wearing you down. Surrounding yourself by more positive people over the next week will help revive your free spirit. Romance. The Moon/ Jupiter Midpoint in your sign will make you feel especially warm towards your partner. This change will be acknowledged and appreciated!
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)
Stop worrying about
A new hobby will help to put you in touch with someone that you have not seen for a very long time. You may not have had any inkling that they had a shared interest. Romance. A new relationship will start to warm up. Decide how you feel about this before it is too late! You can put the brakes on if necessary.

SOLUTIONS No. 190
Don’t allow your parents to interfere too much in your life. Their aid could be a little intrusive at times. Remember, they are only trying to help. Romance. Don’t get too worked up about the state of your relationship. A dose of realism will help to put everything in perspective. Things will go as they should.

advertising feature - getting the best out of your redundancy Financial Tips by Ellerfield Financial Adviser SEAN NIGH WITH redundancies being announced across the region, sometimes it can be difficult for those affected by the THE question Sean is asked the most is: What should I do with my redundancy payout? There are plenty of options here and many people chose to use this amount to pay off debt such as investment properties. A key consideration with this option is that typically once you pay down an investment loan you permanently eliminate the tax deductibility of this loan. If you need to re-borrow against this property in future the interest on this loan will not be tax deductible if used for non-investment purposes such as buying a home to live in or even as an additional contribution to super. An alternative solution is to set up an offset account which sits next to an investment property loan. By placing money into this account, it will offset the interest on the loan by the amount in the account. For example, if the loan amount is $100,000 and the amount in the offset account is $100,000, there will be no interest paid on the loan while the money is in the offset account. However, if you take the money out of the offset account the interest that begins accruing on the investment loan again becomes tax deductible. Age plays a huge role in what direction people are heading in after being made redundant so the below common financial queries are broken down into two categories: those looking to retire, and those wanting to remain in the workforce. RETIREMENT AGE: thinking of leaving the workforce The first question most people ask is- can I afford to retire? As a general Ellerfield operates in conjunction with local business W.D. Hall Account-
rule of thumb, you need at least 65 per cent of your current income per year to retire comfortably. If you are currently 60, you will likely need that amount of money for the next 30 years or longer. That is a lot of money and it is critical you analyse how much you can afford to spend every year and how to produce that income from your super and other investments. The good news is that when managed properly, 60 per cent of all the money you will spend while in retirement will actually be made during retirement from the returns on your investments. There are many different approaches to managing retirement funds and Sean says there are two critical areas to get right when doing this planning. THE investments you choose It is critical to understand the risks of the investments you are in through your super fund or otherwise. Negative returns during retirement when not planned for can be devastating to a retirees income if they do not have time to let them recover. However, analysis shows that if you decide to play it safe and put 100 per cent of your money into cash you will likely reduce your retirement income by 34 per cent. Getting the balance right between cash and other investments is really important. Key pointer - the average default investment option for most super funds will typically have between 60-85 per cent allocation to shares, property and other growth assets. This caused serious pain for retirees during the ants, located at Endeavour Square, and are offering complimentary
announcements to know what it all means. A Financial Adviser from Ellerfield Planning, Sean Nigh (left), has put together his key financial points. He said it was important to keep in mind that every
financial situation is unique, and seeking personalised financial advice is always recommended. The following addresses common queries Sean is asked by people affected by severances.
Global Financial Crisis of 2008. Most retirees who did not have a plan and understand their investments prior to this continue to feel the pain to this day and there is little that can be done in hindsight. STRUCTURE of your retirement funds In addition to the important question of where the money is actually invested you need to consider how this is all set up. Getting this right can have significant benefits in terms of minimising tax and maximising Centrelink benefits. Another common question asked when thinking of retiring is - can I receive the age pension? The rules for when you can receive the Age Pension and how much you will receive are complex and require detailed analysis, however if you are eligible for the age pension, by managing and structuring your current assets in the right way, you can maximise the amount you will be eligible to receive while also reducing your tax. As a rule of thumb, the more money you can get into superannuation the better. CONTINUING in the workforce Note: if you fall into this category, but plan on retiring in 10 years or less, you are in what Sean calls the “Retirement Risk Zone” and he encourages you to read the section above in addition to the below and put a plan in place now. One of the biggest decisions for those affected by the redundancies in Nhulunbuy is where am I going to live? This is a really important decision
to get right and the questions Sean often get are: • Should I buy or Rent? As a general rule of thumb, if you don’t see yourself living in the home for more than five years you will likely be financially better off renting rather than buying. • Should I move into my investment property? This is often a viable idea, a few things to consider are: • If you have more than one, moving into the one with the least amount of debt and/or most amount of Capital Gains is often best. *If you have a property you have previously lived in as you primary residence, moving into this property may result in significant savings in Capital Gains Tax down the track when you sell. WHAT can I do about the tax I pay on my redundancy? A concern for many people is the large amount of tax taken out of the redundancy pay out. These days that is largely unavoidable, however, if you believe you will be earning less in the next financial year, than the current financial year, one strategy to consider is to try to bring forward any tax deductions that can be incurred in the current financial year (for example: pre-pay investment interest or other deductible expenses you have). WHAT happens to my super and the insurances I have there? Super: A lot of people have what is called a “Defined Benefit” super account. In most circumstances upon becoming redundant this benefit amount
is calculated and then rolled over to what is called an “Accumulation” Account. In an accumulation account the responsibility is on the individual to determine how to manage this money as opposed to a “defined benefit” where the balance is determined by the employer based on a set formula. Typically speaking, the money transfers from Defined Benefit to the default investment option in the default employer accumulation fund. The important thing to be aware of here is this money is now invested and it is up to you to determine if that super fund is appropriate for you and what investment options would be best for you personally as the “default” option often is not suitable to each individual. • Insurance: For a lot of people, they will lose the Life and Disability insurances they have through their super fund. Some employees are also offered Income Protection through their employer that is typically terminated upon their employment ceasing. Getting replacement policies in place as soon as possible for those who need it is critical. The worst thing that could happen after a redundancy is to get sick or injured on top of it and not have cover in place. TIP FOR THE FUTURE - even for those not being made redundant, it is worth considering putting external policies in place that will not be lost when you eventually move on from your current job. The above financial advice is generalised and should only be pursued under the guidance of a financial professional to insure any changes are right for your current situation.

NT musos take a soulful trip down the river Tour de ArnhemlAnd 2014 The Invisible River by Sietta Review by ANGELA MADDEN
SIETTA is some seriously good homegrown talent. Formed and based in Darwin, Sietta is the duo of James Mangohig (producer/ instrumentalist) and Caiti Baker (powerhouse vocals). These two are kicking some serious musical goals around the country, and the release of The Invisible River is hopefully set to carry the group further into the national focus. The Invisible River is the second album from Sietta, following on from their debut, The Seventh Passenger (2011) which was very well-received; generating both strong radio play and tours alongside the likes of Hermitude, Jessica Mauboy and Paul Kelly. The sound of Sietta is well-produced and described as “an exploration of soul, blues, hip-hop and electronica”. A number of tracks off their current release were mixed by local Nhulunbuy musician/producer Kris Keogh (ZZAAPP records), a contribution which James described as the band’s “secret weapon”. Sietta are signed to Aussie record label Elefant TRAKS, which is also home to Hermitude, Joelistics, The Herd and Urthboy among others. High calibre neighbours to say the least.
If you are interested in the Tour then please check it out on Facebook, by joining the Facebook group “Tourdearnhemland” If you are interested in being part of it as a crew or a rider, then please send email to tourdearnhemland@hotmail.com. If you want to sponsor the event in anyway, then please contact the organisers on the above email address as well. And if you are driving out and about, please be careful and give the riders a wide berth as possible. They will utilising the tracks around the peninsula as far out as the Giddies in the training rides, particularly on Saturday mornings.
The Invisible River was launched in Darwin last Saturday night, March 15, to a sell-out crowd at The Railway Club. So this weeks’ Gove FM feature album really is hot off the press! Each week we will feature an album by an Australian artist or group. Listen out as we play a track from the feature album Monday to Friday this week, just prior to the midday news. A full interview between Station Manager Ange and James from Sietta will be broadcast on-air at 2pm Wednesday, March 19, on 106.9 Gove FM.

EVERY year around this time, kids at Nhulunbuy Christian College get a little crazy all in the name of charity. It was Crazy Hair Day at the school last Friday, where kids bought tins of colour and dolled up their hairdos to help fundraise for the Leukaemia Foundation. Even the Principal, Russell McKane, got into the spirit and added a few extra shades to his beard. The school was even treated to a special guest appearance, by Northern Territory Education Minister Peter Chandler, who popped in during a day trip visiting schools around the Peninsula.

By MICHAEL STIMPSON THE North Queensland AFL Masters tournament was played at Cazaly’s Stadium, Cairns on Saturday, March 8. For the third consecutive year, Gove Old Codgers fielded a side, and in a landmark year for the town the Old Codgers were looking to erase the disappointment of last year’s loss. Cairns Saints, controversial inclusions in last year’s tournament, would not be there to defend the crown with organisers going back to the traditional over 35s format. True to form, members of the Gove touring party began training in October last year, to ensure that the trophy would board Qantas flight 1944 to Gove at least one last time. Competition started at 12.30 and the day’s third fixture saw an eager Gove side take to the magnificent Cazalys’ field for the first time. The match against 2012 Grand Final opponents Townsville promised to be a torrid affair with the Townsville boys looking to avenge the 2012 defeat. An unfavourable coin toss meant that Gove would begin the 2014 campaign into the teeth of a stiff southerly breeze. After some willing exchanges Gove began to show early dominance. Hamish Simpson scored the first Gove goal when his penetrating pass to the advantage of Paul ‘Leggy’ Gynell sailed over the pack and bounced favourably through the big sticks. Another followed shortly, by Paul Gynell, who kicked well after some impressive midfield work. Within minutes Dan Dwyer found himself in space and on the end of a Dave Llewellyn centering pass. Dwyer’s impressive 40m goal into the wind ensured Gove’s on field dominance was reflected on the scoreboard. Townsville struggled across the park against a Gove side that was better organised and consistently harder at the ball. Gove took a handy two goal lead into the half-time break. The second half started much where the first left off. Gove’s midfield dominated the contest
and the forward line gave the Townsville defence no easy way out. A determined piece of defence by Michael Stimpson earned a free kick with a quick hand off to a flying Gus Graham seeing the ball back into Gove forward 50 and onto the chest of a trademark Jamie Wilks lead. The ensuing shot at goal from a tight angle sailed straight through for another Gove goal. Gove were there to play and they ran riot over a tiring Townsville side. A stunning 50m strike from Hamish Simpson delivered the knockout blow with another from Paul Gynell icing a comprehensive victory. Gove’s first outing for the tournament; a comfortable 8-4-52 to Townsville’s 2-2-14. Early form lines suggested that Capricornia, Gove’s second match, would provide a much stiffer challenge. The opening exchanges were typically fierce with little separating the two sides. Captain Jamie Wilks’ poor form at the coin toss again consigned Gove to a tough slog into the breeze in the first half. The wind advantage provided Capricornia with repeated attacks on goal only to be denied by inspired defence from back line trio John O’Neal, Andrew McGloughlin and stalwart Des O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan’s repeated contested marks under pressure typified the Gove side’s resolve and defensive quality. Capricornia were held goalless but they did accumulate slowly through continued pressure with a steady flow of behinds. Against the run of play and wind a counter attack set up by the Gove defence saw Darren Andrews find Michael Stimpson leading into an open wing. Some clever handling and deft kicking from Brett Grieves and Paul Gynell gifted Simpson a six pointer unopposed and in front to give Gove the lead. Capricornia countered, finding a rare path through the Gove defence, to retake the lead late in the first half. Slowly though, Gove’s determination to be first to the ball began to tell and late in the first half another Gove goal sent the teams to half time all square, Capricornia 1-6-12
Dressing room shenanigans after victory. to Gove’s 2-0-12. The half time mood in the Gove squad was buoyant, having repelled Capricornia’s best with a strong breeze set to aid the second half effort. Results earlier meant that even a close loss would see Gove into the Grand Final but no thought was being given to anything but a resounding win. From the opening bounce of the second half the game was only ever going to go one way. Gove’s ruckman Matt Watson and Kade McDonald dominated as did the on ballers, Shane Wembridge, Garry Upton and Gus Graham. Moments into the second half some smart play from Shane Wembridge released a rampant Dave Neenan with a precision pass. Neenan played on and kicked straight to open the second half scoring for Gove. A booming fifty metre effort from Brett Grieves extended Gove’s advantage, quickly followed by another Hamish Simpson six pointer to put the result beyond doubt. A strong mark inside fifty from Dave Llewellyn set up another goal as he kicked straight to seal a strong win. The final result Gove 6-6-42 defeating Capricornia 2-2-14. In an unexpected twist, results throughout the day meant that Gove and Capricornia would face off a second time in the Grand Final as the two highest finishing teams. The final game would determine the overall winners so Gove’s dominance to this point would count for little should they lose. In another surprise result, Captain Jamie Wilks won the toss and Gove would start the
final game with the still significant breeze at its back. Little had changed from the previous game with the Gove defence resolute and its attack on ball
ferocious. The flow of the game seemed to be with the Gove team but something was indeed different. Gove’s goal kicking accuracy was absent with four shots on goal straying wide for behinds. At the other end Capricornia had managed to kick an early goal off the ground pouncing on a loose ball. Another Capricornia goal followed while Gove continued to struggle with accuracy. Eventually Gove’s attacking efforts bore fruit with Hamish Simpson’s return to the half forward line inspiring some more cohesive attack. Some desperate scrambling in the goal square released the ball to Paul Gynell who selflessly handballed to Jamie Wilks who scored from point blank range. The goal sent Gove into the half time break trailing by just two points albeit having squandered the wind advantage. The half time score Capricornia 2-0-12 to Gove 1-4-10. Facing unfamiliar territory at the half time break the Gove camp was roused by stirring speeches from captain/coach Jamie Wilkes and club stalwart O’Sullivan. The opening exchanges of the final half were suitably intense with Gove’s defence rising to new heights. The half back line of Justin O’Brien, Darren “Paddy” Andrews and Chucky Norris excelled constantly turning Capricornia around. The midfield, led by Shane Wembridge
and Tim Bunton, found space all over the park and repelled anything that Capricornia could offer. Around five minutes into the quarter Gove found themselves pressing forward in a series of rugged contests. Eventually the ball spilled to Gove with Michael Stimpson managing to get the ball out of the pack to a perfectly positioned Tim Bunton who released a flying Brett Grieves to snap a sharp goal putting Gove in front with about a quarter of the match remaining. The Gove side, aided by inspired cameo efforts from Bert Hovelroud, Michal Opie, Andrew Stokes, Shane Ogg, Mike Sandford, and Matty Creeper dug in to ensure there was no way back for Capricornia. Moments later more forward pressure came very close to yielding another but Capricornia managed to clear their goal line and a counter attack loomed but for an inspirational fifty metre chase down and tackle from Dan Dwyer. The resulting free kick fed the ball straight back into Gove attacking area and following a number of stoppages Dave Neenan managed to pounce on a loose ball and kicked off the ground from the forward pocket. The kick looked certain to miss left for a behind, but, as if destiny willed it be, the ball used it’s second last bounce to veer right and travel neatly around the goal post and through for a major. Scenes of jubilation ensued, the grin on Dave Neenan’s face would put Daniel Ricciardo to shame. That would be enough to see Gove home to a special victory. In the end Gove managed to keep a determined Capricornia side scoreless in the second half despite the benefit of a strong breeze. The final score, Gove 3-6-24 defeating Capricornia 2-0-12. In the wrap up Hamish Simpson, a standout on the day despite suffering a calf injury in the second game, was awarded the team’s Best on Ground in addition to the tournament Best and Fairest. The Gove dressing room was abuzz and the sights and sounds will remain etched in the minds of all there for many years to come.
