Authorities call for ban on ‘harmful product’

By MATT GARRICK THERE have been widespread calls for shops in Gove and East Arnhem Land to stop selling a confectionery product that is having disastrous effects on Aboriginal communities in the region.

Sold over the counter in shops from Nhulunbuy to Elcho Island,

the product called Kool-R’s (see right), is a cordial concentrate being sold to children who are eating it as it comes, without first mixing it with water.

Education workers have complained that children, who have eaten the sugar snack, are attending school buzzing from a sugar high, while medical experts are saying it could have harmful

effects on health.

Kool-R’s is made by a food and beverage company called Laga, listed in Papua New Guinea.

The individual packets of 15 grams each, sold for $5 to $10 a bag, do not contain any proper pictorial or written examples of how the product should be consumed.

Health, safety, education and political groups have been crying

out for shopkeepers to have some ethical sense and stop selling the product, as it is doing serious damage.

“Unfortunately it’s being sold in good faith by businesses, but the people who are using it are not using it for its intended purpose, to be diluted in two litres of water.

“It has proven difficult to educate communities about the correct use of it, and we’re hoping that businesses in the area that do sell it will stop selling it, as it’s causing health issues with the kids’ teeth.

“It also sends them on a massive sugar high when they are eating it.”

The ingredients listed on the back of Kool-R’s packets are just sugar, citric acid, flavour, artificial sweetener and colour.

Marthakal Homelands Health Services has echoed the calls for Kool-R’s to be removed from stores.

Marthakal’s Health Services Manager Moana Tane said what worried her was that stores sold it to children.

“Children are children, and, if they see it advertised, then they’re going to go and try to get their hands on it.

“So do we have a responsibility to make sure what’s being sold in the shop is not harmful to children? Yes we do.”

During a visit to the region last week, NT Opposition Leader Delia Lawrie spoke about the product to various health practitioners who she said called for some help on the issue.

“Health practitioners essentially want the product removed.

“I’ve got a lot of sympathy for that

position - of course the direct dental impact it will have will be significant, but I’m also really concerned about the long term health effects on our children as they’re taking in such concentrated sugar levels.”

Ms Lawrie said the government needed to look at what powers it had to recall the product and not have it sold across the town and communities.

“Or look at what warnings need to be on the packets, at the very least, but, really, it’s a product that just shouldn’t be out there.”

Mr Muldoon said that some remote community stores have taken a stance and stopped selling it, because they’ve seen the dramatic effects it was having on kids in those communities, but that hasn’t happened yet in Nhulunbuy.

New GAT play set to blur the lines

WHAT happens on Schoolies’ Week usually stays on Schoolies’ Week - but a group of students from Nhulunbuy are getting ready to change that.

A bunch of budding student actors are currently rehearsing for the Gove Arts Theatre’s (GAT) upcoming play, Blurred, which is all about life lived fast when you’ve just finished school.

Directed by GAT members Tiffany Kynigopoulos and Kasey Lloyd,

the play follows several groups of friends on their way to Schoolies Week celebrations.

It becomes evident pretty early on that the groups may never get to their destination.

Ms Lloyd said the play featured break-downs, a bit of boozing, and many laughs to be had along the way.

“It is going to be a great show, they’ve all been working very hard to get ready for it.”

The show will be performed at The Cell, in 4C’s, on May 3 and 4.

There will be one performance on May 3, at 7.30pm, and two performances on May 4, at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

The show will be restricted to audiences of 15-years-old and over, due to a bit of coarse language and sexual references.

Tickets are on sale now from the Nhulunbuy High School office.

Opposition gets back to the bush

NEWS A NORTHERN Territory Labor Party contingent visited Nhulunbuy and the East Arnhem region on a two-day trip last week, to listen to the concerns of local communities.

Opposition Leader Delia Lawrie and colleagues Nicole Manison, the Member for Wanguri, and Michael Gunner, the Member for Fannie Bay, joined local Member Lynne Walker in travelling to Nhulunbuy, Yirrkala and Galiwin’ku to engage with people living in the bush.

“We look forward to supporting the efforts of Ms Walker to let

the North East Arnhem region know we won’t stop fighting for their jobs and opportunities,” Ms Lawrie said.

She said the Labor party members listened to the concerns of parents and the community in Yirrkala and Galiwin’ku about the CLP Government’s education and teacher cuts as well as local views on the indigenous education review and school attendance programs.

Ms Lawrie also met with the Mala Elders to discuss social and economic aspirations for both the region and the future of Nhulunbuy

Rio Tinto to source local businesses as contractors SENIOR managers from Gove Operations met with almost 40 attendees from local businesses last week at a forum designed to assist businesses with understanding the upcoming contracting opportunities with Rio Tinto Alcan.

The strategy has been developed following a complete review of Gove Operations to identify ways to support local businesses.

Key elements of the strategy include: • Maximising the number of employees and contractors living in Nhulunbuy, • Outsourcing non-core work to local businesses, • Maximising local procurement, and; • Making the best use of existing businesses prior to supporting the establishment of new entities.

Gove Operations General Manager Ryan Cavanagh said: “We recognise the suspension of refinery operations will affect local businesses and our aim is to try to do everything we can to maximise support for existing business.

“Retaining as many people living in the town will benefit all businesses and that is why we will be seeking to maximise the number of employees and contractors living locally,” Mr Cavanagh said.

“We have successfully used local contractors to help us deliver town services and we also believe there are opportunities to outsource other non-core work that we currently do ourselves.”

The site procurement team outlined opportunities that will be tendered during April and May. Some of the areas being outsourced through this period include diesel services for a range of areas (generators, RDA, pumps, and fire pumps), maintenance of light vehicles, mobile cranes, EWPs and forklifts, tyre fitting, bus runs, mail runs, and mooring parties.

Mr Cavanagh said the operation will be working with local businesses so they can pre-qualify to tender for contracts.

“The pre-qualification process enables local businesses to demonstrate they can meet Rio Tinto Alcan’s minimum requirements in relation to insurance, quality, and health, safety and environment,” Mr Cavanagh said.

“The operation will progressively advertise tenders and maintain close contact with local business. I’m confident that local businesses can be competitive and are well placed to secure additional work with our operation.”

Brawlers plead guilty On The Beat with NT Police and driving unlicensed after he was picked up by Police driving in Nhulunbuy at 2am on March 30.

PLANT life rehabilitation is well under way at a former green waste area of Gayngaru (Town Lagoon).

Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited (NCL), lead by horticulturist Ralph Pellenat (above), started to rehabilitate the area in October 2013, in an attempt to bring the site back as close as possible to its original state.

The lagoon rehabilitation area has been bare since the relocation of the garden green waste to the Nhulunbuy Waste Facility. At relocation, the site was levelled.

The rehabilitation process consisted of: • Identifying the existing native plant species that were to be retained.

• Slashing the site to reduce the fire fuel load.

• Treating the regrowth and weeds with herbicide (any problem weeds like coffee bush, candle bush and Singapore daisy were given extra treatment).

• Selecting native plants from YBE nursery to match the native plants in the area.

Species included Melaleuca, Eucalyptus, Wattles, Pandanus and Banksia.

The first plants were planted along the water’s edge just before the heavy rains in January 2014.

These were primarily Melaleucas. As the wet season progressed, rows of the other plants were sowed.

Planting in rows was chosen to enable better weed control through slashing and spraying. By the end of February this year, over 300 plants have been planted.

Following a review of the area it was decided to get another 100 plants from YBE which were planted the first week in March.

To date, more than three quarters of the area has been planted out. Unless a major rain event is forecast in the near future, the NCL don’t envisage planting any more until next wet season.

Ongoing long term work in the area will be to manage weed and bush fires for the next three years or more until the plants are fully established.

EIGHT people have pleaded guilty to a number of charges relating to an alcohol-fuelled disturbance at the Walkabout Tavern on February 8.

Nine Nhulunbuy residents had been charged over the fight, which ended in one man being hospitalised for two nights.

The men were sentenced in Nhulunbuy Magistrates Court last week, over a number of offences including fighting in a public place, hindering police, disorderly behaviour in a public place, engaging in violent conduct and trespassing.

The group of eight all received 12 month good behaviour bonds.

One other man who had been charged over the incident has had his case adjourned until May 8.

BURN Antares are a five-piece group based out of the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

These young folk have been playing together for two and a half years, and the self-titled EP we are featuring this week is their debut release.

As Daniel from the group explained to me over the phone, this EP was recorded over a one week period in a farmhouse recording studio outside of Sydney.

Daniel described the sound of Burn Antares as, “borrowing very heavily from the late 60s and early 70s,” and quoted some of their major influences as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Jefferson Aeroplane and The Byrds.

He referred to this slice of musical history as a “golden era”, and I’m sure a lot of us would agree.

The strong vocals of lead-singer Grace Farriss are a powerful feature of Burn Antares in my opinion.

This EP is a solid first release, and is easily approachable on the first listen.

However, that’s not to say that Burn Antares melts into the background category of ‘music to cook dinner to’.

It grabs your attention at points, while remaining overall a positive musical offering to reflect the era which the band so clearly worships.

Each week we feature an album by an Australian artist or group. Listen out as we play a track from the feature album Monday to Friday this week, just prior to the midday news.

A full interview between Station Manager Ange and Daniel from Burn Antares will be broadcast on-air at 2pm Wednesday, April 9, on 106.9 Gove FM. We will be taking a short break from our feature albums for two weeks, over the Easter holiday period.

Get training for Trivia Tuesdays WITH the recent return of quizmaster Mervyn Cafun to town, Tuesday nights now have a new flavour.

They’re now known as The Arnhem Club’s Trivia Tuesdays, and they’re happening weekly from 8-9.30pm.

Merv has been out the front of bars across the country hosting trivia and karaoke nights for six years.

Fair Work inspectors visit Gove FAIR Work Ombudsman inspectors visited Gove earlier this week to educate employers and workers about their workplace rights and responsibilities.

Inspectors visited local businesses on Monday, April 7, handing out information to employers and managers, and opened a drop-in information booth at the Regional Training Centre on Tuesday April 8.

Darwin-based Fair Work inspector Jodi Gribben said the aim of the visit was to raise awareness on the Peninsula of national workplace laws.

“A big part of the Fair Work Ombudsman’s role is to help build knowledge in the community and assist to create fairer workplaces,” she said.

“Opportunities like this - where we can speak directly to employers and employees and educate them about their obligations and entitlements - are an important way to help achieve that and improve community

Gove Community Advisory Committee COMMUNITY UPDATE # 7 The GCAC held another meeting at 5PM on 25 March 2014.

GCAC Taskforce members briefed us on the outcome of their meeting in Darwin on 20 March.

Work is underway on the report to the Chief Minister on economic development opportunities. The Taskforce continues to monitor the progress of transition activities e.g. community and business support and plans for key services.

GCAC members emphasised to the Taskforce that time is of the essence, with urgent Federal engagement and resources required to achieve the community’s objectives of: • Stabilising and sustaining Nhulunbuy as the regional centre for East Arnhem Land, with enough people to keep air routes, businesses, services, education and health and jobs.

• Growing and diversifying the East Arnhem economy and removing barriers to development.

GCAC was also briefed on the Chief Minister’s 18 March announcement, including: A. Work underway to establish a new East Arnhem development entity and a regional economic development fund.

• The entity will be fully commercial and will provide a single point of entry for new industry, business and residents. It will work across governments and the private sector to facilitate the entry or expansion of prospective investors.

• The entity will hold 250 surplus Rio Tinto houses to use to facilitate new economic activity. Rio has also agreed to open up access to a range of its assets including the general cargo wharf, warehouses, and workshops.

• The NTG is sourcing legal and commercial advice on the most appropriate model for the entity.

After this, further discussions will be held with the GCAC. B. The Chief Minister has written to the Prime Minister requesting support for: • delivery of a major roads upgrade program including the Central Arnhem Road; • a program of geo-scientific exploration to stimulate minerals and energy exploration, agricultural and forestry development; • the construction of a boarding facility in Nhulunbuy for Yolngu students from East Arnhem; and • funding support for the new East Arnhem economic development entity.

GCAC members discussed the positive news that the Minister for Education has committed to maintaining current education services and permanent education positions in Nhulunbuy to end 2014.

The GCAC is exploring the idea of a facilitated workshop on future opportunities and plans, with a focus on population sustainability and encouraging new businesses and families to come to town.

The GCAC agreed a number of key questions to be raised at a meeting on 26 March with Rio Tinto, the NTG and GCAC Taskforce representatives, e.g. queries on the $50M package, future refinery plans, and population figures for August and December.

The GCAC also agreed to continue discussions on the aspiration of achieving no FIFO into East Arnhem for all employees and contractors, except where specialists are required on an infrequent basis.

The NTG agreed to facilitate a briefing for the GCAC by the Department of Mines and Energy.

A disastrous day for the CLP government last Friday with their three rebel backbenchers Alison Anderson, Larisa Lee and Francis Kurrupuwu, finally delivering on their threat to resign from the CLP. They now sit on the cross benches in the Territory parliament, claiming to consider forming a new political party to represent the interests of those in regional parts of the Territory.

Their departure, along with the currently vacant seat of Blain means that the CLP hold just 12 of the 25 seats in parliament and therefore will be desperate to retain the Palmerston electorate previously held by Terry Mills.

While a 13.9% swing against the CLP is required for Labor to win the seat for the first time, it is not impossible. Especially so when the current government are clearly

Michael Gunner and Nicole Manison spent three very busy and productive productive days in the region last week with time divided between Nhulunbuy, Yirrkala, Gunyangarra and Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island).

It was certainly a special time to be at Galiwin’ku with Robert de Castella and the Indigenous Marathon Project visiting the island conducting trials for hopefuls wanting to join the IMP while also celebrating the efforts of Evelyna Dhamarandji who completed the New York marathon last November.

WITH students and school staff on their wellearned end of term break, I am looking forward to heading to Darwin at the end of this week to see Nhulunbuy High School band, “Good Question”,

THE last day of term at any school can sometimes get a bit crazy.

But last Friday at Nhulunbuy Primary School it was especially so, when kids got into the fun of Crazy Hair Day, and teacher Suzie Monteiro had her head shaved onstage for charity.

Kids coloured their hair to support Suzie’s cause of raising money to support cancer research.

After the locks that she had cultivated for nearly three years were lopped off, and her head shaved by local hairdressers Kristy and Erica, her hair was donated to Wigs for Kids; a charity providing support for children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy and other cancer and disease treatments.

A MEMORANDUM of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Rio Tinto Alcan Gove and Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation to further develop an already strong relationship and leverage shared knowledge to improve land and sea management.

Gove Operations General Manager Ryan Cavanagh and Dhimurru’s Chairperson Rarrtjiwuy Herdman captured their intent in an MoU signed in Gove recently.

Under the MoU, the parties aim to work together to improve the conservation of natural and cultural resources in the area.

Over 120,000 ha of land is managed between Rio Tinto Alcan Gove and Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation.

Manager of Health, Safety, Environment and Community Leon Staude said; “Although we have had a strong working relationship with Dhimurru over the years, the MoU formalises this relationship and allows us to work more closely on what we are doing from a biodiversity and cultural management perspective.

“This in turn improves our ability

to learn from each other and identify opportunities to work together.”

Dhimurru’s Managing Director Wurrulnga Marika supported Leon’s comments and said; “The agreement is of great importance to Dhimurru going forward as we seek to improve and build on Dhimurru’s management expertise and capacity.”

The two organisations will meet regularly to discuss projects and what knowledge and resources can be shared to create efficiencies and improved outcomes.

“One of the first projects on our list is to streamline weed management across the leases and work together on maintaining tracks,” Mr Staude said.

“The agreement is a win-win for both organisations and for the East Arnhem region in general.”

Since 2009, Rio Tinto Alcan Gove has provided over $500,000 in funding towards Dhimurru initiatives, including employment and training opportunities for Yolngu through an indigenous Ranger program and land management activities and research.

Call for Feds to fund track THE Federal Government should support Gove by funding the Central Arnhem Road to have all-year access, says Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon.

He recently told Federal Parliament that one thing the Tony Abbott government could do was, “stump up $350 million for the Central Arnhem

THE Gove Regional Arts Centre at 4C’s opened its doors last weekend for an exhibition of paintings entitled Snapshots in Oils.

Central to the show was the vivid work from New Zealand-born oil painter, Janice Clifton Wykes.

Also on show was the work of the talented art students she teaches in town; Red Fulton, Eleanor Sampson, Kay Fleming and Ellie Fletcher, as well as some local school students.

Guests strolled around the art centre and soaked up the works, while the Gove Peninsula Festival Association manned the bar.

YOU never know who you might cross paths with up here in East Arnhem Land.

When I left my high school in St Kilda, Melbourne, I never imagined I’d end up working in Ramingining, a remote Indigenous community 580km east of Darwin.

But this is exactly what I’ve done, and where I

wound up running into a fellow high school alumni with whom I have now shared rich experiences.

Ramingining is situated on the Arafura Sea Swamp with a population of about 1000 people.

The community was established in the early 1970s and became recognized as Aboriginal land with the passage of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act of 1976.

Dr Anne Patton at-

tended my school, St Michael’s, from 19691974.

After graduating she completed her medical degree at the University of Melbourne and eventually made the big move up north to pursue work in remote Aboriginal communities.

Anne moved to Nhulunbuy in 1999 before later settling in Darwin.

She now works as a consultant psychiatrist for

Top End Mental Health Service.

Part of that role includes remote travel to communities such as Ramingining.

Meanwhile, 23 years later, I attended St Michael’s from 1997-2002.

After completion, I studied a Bachelor of Nursing/Arts at the Australian Catholic University.

I spent several years working at St Vincent’s

Possible new species glides into Top End RESEARCHERS may have identified a new species of tree-dwelling glider in the savannah woodlands and monsoon forests of the Top End. Preliminary forensic analysis of a marsupial, presumed for more than 150 years to be a type of sugar glider, indicates the creature is more closely related to two other species of glider.

Professor Sue Carthew heads a group including Professor Steve Cooper from the SA Museum and Dr Rebecca MontagueDrake from Charles Darwin University, that has brought into question the identity of what is known in local Indigenous languages as the Lambalk glider (Petaurus breviceps ariel), a sub-species of the sugar glider.

“From analysis of the DNA and the morphology of some 20 specimens we can say fairly clearly that they are not sugar gliders,” Professor Carthew said.

“The DNA suggests they are more closely related to either the squirrel glider or the mahogany glider.”

Professor Carthew said that in terms of its morphology, it contained some features reminiscent of the sugar glider and some reminiscent of the squirrel glider.

“Its body mass is more

in keeping with that of a sugar glider but the length of its tail and the pointiness of its snout are more reminiscent of a squirrel glider.”

Professor Carthew described the results as exciting.

A force to be reckoned with

KNOWN on Elcho Island as a bridge between Yolngu culture and the Police, Officer Bettina Danganbarr is a force to be reckoned with.

Aboriginal Community Police Officer Danganbarr has been working in the NT Police Force since 2007, when she started her career working at stations in Darwin.

In 2008, she had the opportunity to return to work in her birthplace of Elcho, and hasn’t looked back since.

Born to a father from Sydney and a Yolngu mother from East Arnhem Land, her colleagues say Officer Danganbarr has helped hugely in getting her community to understanding elements of Western law.

Sergeant George Watkinson of Galiwin’ku Police said she was very important to both sides.

“She is the link between the Police and the Yolngu, and helps bridge the gaps between Yolngu and Balanda law.

“She can explain cultural ways to

us, and tell us who to talk to.

“On the other side, she is able to help community members understand the reasons for the ways of Western law.”

Officer Danganbarr said her major focus was on keeping her community safe from harm.

“I like for my community to feel protected, and have a good environment to live in peacefully.

“I respect my people, but I always say that if you’re doing something to hurt my community, that’s not going to stop me doing my job.”

At times her role could seem to others as overwhelming, as whenever there is trouble in town, community members come to her for help.

She often opens up her house, outside of work hours, to shelter women and children who have been facing domestic issues.

Along with painting and tending to her garden, one of her big passions is trying to guide youths in the community.

Nikesha said the new role helps her with life skills while at the same time contributing to her studies.

“I’ve been here for a month now, and I wouldn’t mind taking a full-time job here one day.

“I’m learning a lot, and there’s a lot to learn - and I like working as a teller.”

The bank offers Nikesha flexible shifts so the work does not

conflict with her studies.

Nhulunbuy’s Westpac Bank Manager Lisa Barrett said the trainees were doing really well.

“They’re part of the team.

“They deal with all the things the rest of the team deal with, the customers, the cash, everything.

“The responsibilities they’ve got here are no different to anyone else.”

This trainee mentor program has taken place in the past in the NT, in Darwin and Alice Springs, but this marks the first time it has ever been offered in Gove.

IN the centre of Elcho Island’s Galiwin’ku community stands a sturdy farm shed that’s being used for everything but storing hay bales.

An industrious group of residents has converted the shed into a booming store and workshop, called the Birrk Birrk Shop.

Here, local men and women labour away busily each day, creating and selling items that will benefit their community.

The complex includes a furniture workshop, where handymen are able to forge a quality wooden bed frame in less than two hours.

There’s also an op shop and capabilities for art and sewing workshops there as well.

Managed by husband and wife team Jan and Mark Deacon, the shop has been up and running for two years, with a couple of years spent on the planning process before then.

Ms Deacon

said the shop presented a safe place for locals to come and gain satisfying work experience.

“It’s like any other Australian workplace, where any troubles from home are asked to be left at the door when they come in for work each morning.”

A contingent of NT Labor politicians visited the shop last Thursday, April 3, including Opposition Leader Delia Lawrie and local MLA Lynne Walker.

Ms Lawrie said the shop also presented a great opportunity for creating healthier lifestyles.

“With the furniture they’re making, for affordable prices, they’re getting people sitting at tables rather than on the floor, beds so people are not having to sleep on the ground, and shelves so people can have a place to store their things.

“It’s been brilliant.”

The workshop provides meaningful employment to a number of men through the local Aboriginal corporation, Marthakal Employment Services.

THREE MINUTES WITH . . . Former champion marathon runner Rob de Castella FORMER Commonwealth Games champion Rob de Castella can often be heard speaking inspirationally about the parallels between living life and running a marathon.

They’re both long distance races,

he says, and both take a lot of hard work to get to the finish line.

These parallels are part of the driver behind the Indigenous Marathon Project - a program Mr de Castella founded and directs.

How has East Arnhem Land reacted to the Indigenous Marathon Project?

I think the more remote communities seem to embrace it even stronger than anywhere else.

The impact that our runners have in their communities, in terms of leadership and providing that inspiration, is greater.

While we still have a positive impact in the major cities and some of the regional towns, it’s the remote communities where we’ve seen some of the greatest impact.

And that’s evident here (in Galiwin’ku).

And it’s the same in Yirrkala - to have had runners from East Arnhem, and having had runners from Yirrkala for the last three years, 2011, 2012 and 2013, helps continue to lay the foundations of interest in distance running.

The project offers Indigenous people from across Australia the opportunity to be selected in a group to train and run in one of the world’s famous races; the New York Marathon.

So we’ll just continue to try to leverage off the runners and their presence and maintain that momentum.

What impresses you most about these runners from remote East Arnhem communities?

Well, the fact that they can train up here in the humidity and the heat!

Dodging the cheeky town dogs and things like that are just incredible too.

And of course without having many running clubs or major sporting organisations or competitions, to really have that commitment, and get out there and train almost daily, and to build up their training to lay the foundations to run a full 42km marathon, is just an incredible indication of their commitment and determination.

from Yirrkala - Jamie Wunungmurra, Nathan Djerrkura and Arian Pearson have successfully graduated from the program and returned to Gove to help inspire their communities about the experience of running in New York.

Mr de Castella, or ‘Deeks’, was in Galiwin’ku last week, looking for the next hopefuls to take part in the project for 2014, and while there he had a moment to chat with the Arafura Times.

You’ve mentioned before that after the New York Marathon is over, IMP continues to look after the athletes who have run it. How does that work?

It’s not just a splash in the pan experience.

We consider them as graduates. We’ve got 32 graduates now, all who have finished either the New York or Boston marathon in the US, or the Tokyo Marathon. We had a group that ran the Tokyo Marathon after the marathon in New York was cancelled in 2012 because of a hurricane.

So these 32 graduates, their obligation and their duty is to run, sweat and inspire.

To continue to run and stay healthy.

To continue to sweat; they’ve got to continue to work hard at whatever they do, whether that be sport or their jobs or being good members of their family. And to continue to inspire their families and their communities.

Skills for school outside of the classroom

Yirrkala School students have been learning tennis skills in Gove.

Despite the heat, Nanukala Burarrwanga was full of smiles.

IN a change from the classroom, Yirrkala School kids have been learning new skills out on Nhulunbuy’s tennis courts.

Students from years four, five and six - the Ngalindi class - have been taking part in a tennis program this term, helped out by Gove Tennis Coach Nicky Mayer.

Last Tuesday, the kids were out on the courts running around, improving their motor skills, cooperation and learning the basics of tennis.

Yirrkala School teacher Jazz Rolton said it was great for the students to get involved in other curriculum activities outside of the classroom.

She also gave praise to the Yirrkala School Attendance Officers, who came along and took part on the courts.

“The officers, whose purpose it is to get kids to school, have also been supporting kids to stay there as well.

“They’re great role models and they’re encouraging the kids to get involved in all types of healthy activities.”

Gove Peninsula Tennis Club, who supported the program, said opportunities like this would continue for remote communities.

The club is working with Tennis NT and Tennis Australia to ensure funding can continue for such programs into the future.

A new Marathon Club has started on Elcho Island to get girls ready for IMP try-outs.

THE Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) national tryout tour for 2014 kicked off last week, on April 3, in the East Arnhem community of Galiwin’ku This was one of 12 tryouts happening around the nation.

More than 30 indigenous runners registered for the try-out, making it the single largest try-out in IMP’s history.

On the day, men ran 5km on the community’s barge road, while women ran 3km - all of the runners reached the finish line.

The love for running in Galiwin’ku started with IMP graduate Evelyna Dhamarrandji, who on November 3, 2013, became the first Yolngu woman from East Arnhem Land to complete a marathon (Evelyna ran the New York Marathon).

Her final steps in the New York Marathon were the beginning of an inspirational journey.

S i x m o n t h s l a t e r, Evelyna’s experience has sparked a new found love of running and exercise in her community.

With the help of Evelyna and local youth workers, the 30 men and women who registered for the IMP try out also established a ‘Marathon Club’ on the small island that meets twice a week for training.

Sport and Recreation Mentor in Galiwin’ku Ashton Kealy said; “In the two months since establishing this marathon club, the culture of running and living a healthy lifestyle has been enriched in each individual reflecting on to their children, family and friends.”

Due to the wonderful work in her community, and her involvement with IMP, Evelyna has recently become a top three finalist in the NT Young Achiever Award for Health and Wellbeing.
