THE sharp eyes of a CareFlight pilot and flight nurse helped save four people clinging to their upturned ďŹ shing boat out to sea off Nhulunbuy on Sunday. The national search and rescue co-ordinating body, Australian Maritime Safety Authority in Canberra, called the CareFlight Top End Medical Retrieval Service King Air aircraft shortly before 2pm (NT time) to help ďŹ nd the four when they activated a distress beacon. The Nhulunbuy-based CareFlight pilot Ben Ragg used his

aircraft radio to home in on the distress beacon some 15km out to sea north-west of the Gove Peninsula. Mr Ragg said initially it was hard to see the four occupants, two men and two boys, clinging to their upturned 5.4 metre long white tinny. “We had their approximate position from AMSA, and could hear the beacon, but it was still hard to see the upturned boat and their heads in the white waves of the choppy water, he said. “They were waving frantically

to get our attention, but when we started circling the four realised we’d spotted them and they calmed down.â€? CareFlight circled for half an hour until a two other ďŹ shing boats arrived on scene to rescue the men, Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon from Nhulunbuy police said. A 51-year-old and 42-year-old male and two 11-year-old boys were brought back to shore, where St John Ambulance staff examined them and found them ďŹ t and healthy.

“The two adults then returned to scene in an attempt to salvage the vessel because it’s in a busyish shipping lane,â€? he said. “They had gone fishing at 5.30am and set off their EPIRB when they were in trouble. They were back on shore within an hour of setting of the device and this highlights the importance of ensuring all vessels have them on board. They save lives. Mr Ragg said the two men reportedly bought the tinny the day before taking it out for its ďŹ rst outing.

Emergency service volunteers brush up on their CPR skills THE ďŹ rst training night of the year for the Nhulunbuy volunteer adult division of St John Ambulance was a huge success said ambulance ofďŹ cer in charge Mandy Paradise. “We invited the local ďŹ re department, the NTES boys and the local Police to join us for a session on resuscitation, “ she said.

“As you can see from the photo, our little room was crowded. A short video was shown of a rescue by the Bondi Lifesavers and then Michael Davy gave an excellent presentation on how to do CPR and use an AED. “Everyone had great fun practising on the manikins and then we ďŹ nished up with the

best curries, made by Michael Davy - maybe he missed his calling as a chef. “The OIC of Nhulunbuy Fire Department Colin Snowden has challenged the Ambos to a game of volleyball in the future and there are more joint exercises planned. A great way to start the year with team building between the emergency services.

Man drowns rescuing girl NORTHERN Territory Police have found the body of a man who drowned while saving a girl at Elcho Island. Police said the 23-year-old man died after getting caught in a rip off the island, on Sunday, February 5. He had rescued an 11-year-old girl who was getting dragged out to sea at a beach off Galiwinku. The man’s body was located in Galiwinku on Monday morning following a day long search and rescue effort on Sunday. Senior Constable First Class Travis Edwards from the Territory Response Group said Police received reports that an 11-year-old girl had been swept off Dhudupu Beach at around 1.30pm. “Police, NT Emergency Service volunteers, rangers, a doctor and community members attended and upon arrival, established the

man had also entered the water to rescue the girl,â€? he said. “A Police vessel located the girl and pulled her from the water. She was treated by local health clinic staff and has made a full recovery. “It appears the male had managed to reach the young girl and assist her in staying aoat before he disappeared. “A Police vessel and a plane commenced search operations to ďŹ nd the missing man, however were suspended overnight due to fading light. “The deceased male was located early on Monday morning. “This is a tragic incident where an act of bravery has resulted in this young man losing his life. I urge everyone within the Territory to think twice before entering any body of water. In these rough conditions, the currents can be extremely dangerous.â€?

Court cracks 100 cases in busiest week on record POLICE had obviously been extremely busy over the last two months as the court list for Nhulunbuy last week almost reached the 100 mark. Some 98 cases were presented at court in front of Magistrate Hiliary Hannam Sergeant Alex Brennan was the Police prosecutor and he said the reason for so many cases was the lack of a court date in January. There were 69 criminal, 10 domestic violence and 19 juvenile cases and Court did not adjourn until 7pm. Fourteen of the criminal cases related to trafďŹ c or drink driving offences, ďŹ ve in relation to possessing saleable quantities of Kava, one of supplying Cannabis, numerous assaults including two towards a police officer, two for possessing a weapon in public and numerous stealing offences. Sergeant Brennan said he believed it to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, court list for Nhulunbuy Magistrates Court.

Surf Club devastated by fire By MARJO HALLOWELL

BLACK smoke loomed over Nhulunbuy as onlookers stood stunned that the Surf Club was going up in smoke. A crowd gathered last Monday evening, February 6, as emergency services tackled the blaze that was consuming all the equipment at the Nhulunbuy Surf Lifesaving Club. Members stood in disbelief as they watched years of hard work disappear as their equipment fell victim to an apparent electrical fault. The resident caretaker (see page 1) was understandably shaken as he was aided by St John Ambulance and spent Monday night in Gove District Hospital. The officer in charge of the Nhulunbuy Fire Station, Colin Snowden, was at Hindle Oval when he spotted black smoke coming from the area near the beach and went to investigate thinking it may have been a pandanus fire or a car alight. When he saw it was the surf club he called his volunteers and two were at the fire station by the time he got there to get the fire truck. Mr Snowden said by the time a 000 call came through he and some of his crew were already on the way to the scene of the fire. Their first priority was to assess the situation and they created barriers between the building that was alight and other Club assets. Structures damaged by the fire included the enclosed storage shed, caretaker’s residence

and the kitchen. Eugenia Road was closed while emergency vehicles were in attendance and the wind helped direct thick smoke away from the town. A forensic team and specialist fire investigators arrived in Nhulunbuy on Tuesday and established the cause of the fire to be an electrical fault which started at the powerboard. The fire started around 6pm and Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon, Officer in Charge of the Nhulunbuy Police Station said that thankfully no one was injured in the fire. “The caretaker was at home at the time and was alerted to the developing fire by his dog. Emergency Services were notified immediately and attended swiftly,” he said. “Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Units, assisted by local volunteers have done a fantastic job to respond to this incident very quickly. They were able to restrict the blaze to the sheds and residence which saved the main club room.” President of the Surf Club Chris Putland said this was a significant blow to the club as they lost all the Nipper rescue training equipment and the clubs major rescue assets including their all terrain vehicle. He estimated the loss as being in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. “We are already starting to fundraise to ensure there is not too much disruption to our members.” The insurance assessor was at the club on Friday morning and Mr Putland said they were waiting to hear what the next step would be.

“Once we have the insurance evaluation then we’ll know the path forward. “Both Surf Lifesaving NT and Surf lifesaving Australia are standing by to offer us assistance if and when we need it. “I can not thank the committee and members enough. I am totally overwhelmed and very appreciative of all the support. “On Tuesday, once the fire investigators had finished with the site, they were there to secure the site. Power and water were restored to the other buildings and a fence was erected within four hours of us getting the site back. I don’t think that would happen that quickly anywhere else.. “We are extremely thankful for the local emergency services. Snogger and his team saved our other assets and we really really appreciated their efforts. “It is still a dangerous site and will be until the building has been demolished. “We had our barbecue on Friday night as we wanted to reassure our members that we wanted to keep everything as normal as possible.” Mr Putland said they wanted to ensure they started the season on schedule at the end of May. Many local groups have offered their help and Mr Putland said they did not want to take anything from the community until they knew where they stood with the insurance. “We will cry for help if we need it,” he said.

Man saved from fire by his dog

Pete with Blue Dog. >> From page 1 He tells of the remarkable tales of Blue Dog such as when a kingfisher was in the bar and the humans couldn’t get it out. Blue Dog jumped up and caught it in her mouth as it was already exhausted. She then took it outside and released it as her hold on it was gentle but firm.

Only two weeks ago she was up near the school and was in a fight with four dingoes. A man heard the commotion and went out to her rescue with a pipe to ward of the wild dingoes. When she came home she didn’t have a scratch on her. Old Pete said that fortunately the man intervened otherwise four against one could have had a tragic outcome. Blue Dog will often go down to the beach and have a swim as the stingers don’t seem to bother her. She has been known to tag along when people bring their dogs for a walk along Town Beach and one lady takes Blue Dog with her when she goes for her runs. Although Old Pete was saved by his very attentive Blue Dog he wanted to remind people to ensure their fire alarms were always in working order. Had she not been inside then they would have alerted him once the smoke hit them. “Once an alarm goes off be sure just to get out as quickly as you can as smoke can be more hazardous than the flames,” he said. He could not stress too much how humble he felt and said his phone hadn’t stopped as people wanted to make sure he was OK. “The biggest asset of this town is the people,” he concluded.

A downscaled event has been planned for September 1 and 2 and the theme this year is “Australian Resources Boom - Mining and Land Care Management on Indigenous Country. Organised by the Yothu Yindi Foundation event organiser Denise Bowden was in Nhulunbuy last week seeing what resources were available within the town. “We had to downsize the event this year because of major works being carried out at the site which had become home for the event. “Key note speakers have committed to the event and there will be further information about whom they will be closer to the event. “Tickets this year will be severely limited and will be available online from early March so we encourage those wishing to attend to get in early. “Programming is still to be finalised and as this is done more information will be available. “Even though we have had to downsize this year we anticipate that once all the infrastructure is completed out at Gulkula it augers well for the future of Garma. Ms Bowden has been visiting schools and businesses in town to see how they can all work together for the event this year. For more information visit the Youth Yindi Foundation site.

NHULUNBUY Police have been targeting unregistered vehicles and will continue to do so. Sergeant Rob Gordon said they were particularly concerned about the number of vehicles that remain unregistered and thereby also uninsured. “Should the drivers have an accident and a third party be involved they may have difficulty in getting any recompense from the uninsured drivers, he said. “Too often people just don’t think to re-register and we have seen many who have been unregistered for over a year. There really is no excuse as all vehicles carry their own registration stickers which

indicate when they are due. “The minimum fine for an uninsured vehicle is $680 - considerably less than getting the vehicle registered. “Ultimately it is the responsibility of the vehicle owner or driver to ensure the vehicle they are driving carries the necessary registration and insurance. “We are particularly targeting any vehicles from interstate. They are required to have a vehicle registration transferred to the Territory if they are here for more than three months. At Nhulunbuy Magistrates Court last week six people appeared on charges of driving unregistered and

uninsured. Two women, aged 41 and 55, had their charges unconditionally dismissed when they appeared after one said she was told by the Motor Registry they often did not send out reminders. The Arafura Times contacted the Department of Motor Transport and their media spokesman responded and stated: “Reminder notifications are sent as a courtesy to the last known postal or email address. They are sent within six weeks of the date of registration expiration. “It is the vehicle’s owner, and driver’s, responsibility to ensure the vehicle is registered and to notify the MVR of any change of address.

Invitation to hit the road Rent scam alert SOME of the local motorcycle riders from the Gove region are once again planning to barge their bikes to Darwin and head off on a road trip. Ian Dickinson, one of the organisers said anyone who has a motorcycle and would like to experience a road trip is welcome to join in providing they have a bike that is roadworthy and capable of carrying your gear. “The trip will see us venture to Borroloola, Kakadu, Bachelor, Kununurra and several other centres, he said. “Some camping may be involved but this depends on numbers of riders attending. We anticipate about 4,500 km will be ridden and this will be over a 13 night journey. Last year’s trip was an absolute ripper with fantastic scenery, great mateship and a hassle free trip. You do not need to carry a lot of gear on your bike as motels/hotels all have washing machines and bed linen. “The idea is that the bikes will be barged over to Darwin via Perkins and once picked up on the Thursday morning we can begin our great escape. This is not a race or time trial. Just a trip that allows you to travel at your own pace and having been bottled up in Gove for so long, a chance for your bike to get some decent road mileage on it. The trip is planned to take in some of the best roads and scenery the Top End has to offer. Staying at parks and motels you are assured of a good nights rest and some excellent eating venues. This is a good chance to see the start of the Kimberly region for anyone who has not had the pleasure of seeing it before. It doesn’t get any better than seeing it from the seat of a motorbike either. If you feel that you are interested there is a meeting on February 19 at 23 Chippis Road, Gove. “We need to know the numbers so bookings can be made at various accommodations, he said. Contact Dicko on 0428 897 814 for further information.

POTENTIAL renters, in particular students looking for shared accommodation in the Northern Territory for the start of the University year, are being targeted in an online scam that could cost them thousands of dollars. The Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, Gary Clements, has warned renters to be careful when responding to rental properties advertised on the internet where the owner says they are interstate or overseas. “The scam uses popular websites such as Gumtree and www.share-accommodation.net . “Scammers posing as landlords ensure that the offer looks genuine by including photos and real addresses or properties. The scammers say you can’t meet with them to view the property, usually because they’re overseas, but demand a payment to secure the rental, Mr Clements said. “Once the money is sent, usually by Western Union transfer, there is no more correspondence from the scammer and the chances of getting your money back is very poor. Consumers looking for more information regarding this scam should contact Consumer Affairs on 1800 019 319 or email consumer@nt.gov.au

NEWS On the beat with NT Police Machete attack A 29-yeAr-old man has been arrested following a machete attack that occurred on Bickerton Island early last Monday morning, February 6. Senior Sergeant Tony deutrom said the man became angered while walking down a street in Bickerton community and threatened a 21-year-old woman with a machete. “It is alleged that he left the area and returned a short time later, armed with a spear. He threw it at the woman, striking her shoulder,” he said. “The woman’s 34-year-old brother came to her aid and, as a result, received a deep laceration to his forearm from a machete strike.” “Police attended and arrested the offender. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and going armed in public. He was remanded in custody to appear in the darwin Magistrate’s Court. “The injured man was taken to the local health clinic and later to royal darwin Hospital to receive treatment.”

Albanese to forgo bonuses as Rio profit tumbles MInInG giant rio Tinto booked a 59 per cent slump in full-year net profit due mainly to a write-down of its aluminium business. The general manager in Gove was unavailable at this time to comment. However, in relation to rio Tinto’s announcement last Thursday of a fall in profit after the write down of aluminium business, a rio Tinto spokesperson stated the announcement by rio Tinto does not affect the day to day operations at Gove operations. “The aluminium industry is facing significant short-term challenges in the form of a reduction in aluminium prices, high exchange rate, and lower demand caused by global economic uncertainty,” she said. “Gove operations achieved positive improvements in safety performance and production in 2011, including our best ever

annual production result of 2.55 million tonnes. “We remained focused on identifying further opportunities to improve and sustain our position.” The Australian reported a net profit of $US5.8 billion ($5.39bn) for calendar 2011, compared to $US14.32bn for 2010. rio Tinto said the result was primarily due to an impairment charge of $US8.9bn related to its aluminium business. The global miner beat market expectations by posting $US15.5bn in underlying earnings for the 12 months to december 31, 2011, up from a record $US14bn in 2010. Consensus among analysts was for underlying earnings to come in at $US15.3bn. rio Tinto also reported record underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation

and amortisation of $US28.5bn, up 10 per cent on 2010. Cash flows from operations also broke records, up 16 per cent. Chief executive Tom Albanese said he felt it was right not to be considered for an annual bonus for 2011 given the acquisition of the Alcan aluminium unit happened on his watch. Mr Albanese maintained that growth in demand for aluminium remained strong and the company was working hard to improve the performance of its aluminium business. “Whilst we have today reported excellent underlying earnings numbers, we also have to recognise that we have taken a significant impairment charge in relation to our aluminium business,” rio Tinto chairman Jan du Plessis said in a statement.

Police seize $126,000 worth of Kava at Bulman A MAn was charged for drug offences following the seizure of $126,000 worth of kava on Thursday. remote Sergeant leighton Arnott said Bulman Police received information from the Substance Abuse Intelligence desk (SAId) suggesting a vehicle travelling along the Central Arnhem road was carrying kava. “The Ford falcon was intercepted by Police at 11.40am yesterday, February 8, approximately 28kms from Bulman,” remote Sergeant Arnott said. “Police searched the vehicle and allegedly located three duffle bags in the boot. Inside those bags was 80.62kg of kava in 3837 deal bags and 109gm of cannabis in five deal bags.” A 32-year-old man was charged with possessing a trafficable quantity cannabis possessing a commercial quantity kava, supplying commercial quantity kava and unlawfully supply cannabis to another. He was denied bail and is to appear in the Katherine Court. Three other occupants in the vehicle were released without charge. “This is a significant bust and when sold in Aboriginal communities, could have earned the offender a significant amount of cash. With assistance from SAId members, we were able to intercept, arrest and charge the law breaker in a matter of hours,” remote Sgt Arnott said.

A SPATe of property offences in the town of Alyangula has resulted in the arrests of five men after Police investigations. Senior Sergeant Tony Deutrom, officer in charge of the Alyangula Police station said his officers worked tirelessly in tracking down and charging the men for a number of offences. “The unlawful entries and motor vehicle offences are disappointing, even more so when all of the matters were directly linked to the offenders seeking access to alcohol.” “Between January 28 and the February 8 we had a series of crimes committed in the town and Police would like to thank the members of the public who assisted us in our investigations. Information and prompt action by officers will now see the offenders face court as a result.” A 15-year-old, two 18-year-olds, a 21-year-old, and a 23-year-old male were arrested in relation to the unlawful entries.

Minister visits Yirralka Rangers

Visiting with Yirralka Rangers: Luke Playford, Yumutjin Wunungmurra, NT Environment Minister Karl Hampton and Senior Ranger Yinmala Gumana. THE visit to Nhulunbuy by NT Environment Minister Karl Hampton gave many local groups and businesses the opportunity to discuss issues that concerned them. Accompanied on his tour by Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker Mr Hampton visited Yirralka Rangers at Laynhapuy. He was able to see the huge area the rangers covered and spoke to senior rangers Yumutjin Wunungmurra and Yinimala Gumana. Mr Gumana said education and training played an important part of the work they were doing. “We get to teach in country Yolngu knowledge and the elders

out there teach and are cultural advisers. “They are taught songs and paintings which show the meaning of country as well as dancing. “Country includes land and marine environments. In Yolgnu they are all connected. “All countries are connected to other countries through relationships with one another. Stuart Kellaway told the Minister of the junior rangers project they are in the process of establishing. “It should be up and running by the second semester this year and is part of a two year pilot project, he said.

Yumutjin Wunungmurra said there is a capacity around our lives and we can see jobs and areas in which we can move forward. “There are school based programmes and by Year 12 students have learnt about land management and are well on the way to becoming rangers. Conservation and land management is taught to students from year 10 to year 12, he said. As well as visiting the rangers he also met with local businesses and community groups discussing the introduction of Cash For Containers the practicality of the scheme in Gove.

Groote back on manganese radar ABORIGINAL groups in Northern Australia are again looking at a contentious proposal to mine the seabed near Groote Eylandt, which is rich in manganese. In a joint statement the Northern Land Council (NLC) and the Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC), which represent the interest of Aboriginal people in Groote Eylandt and Northern Australia, conďŹ rmed they were re-examining the issue. “At a meeting of the two councils yesterday, it was decided a taskforce would be formed using resources from both organisations to implement the most effective plan for the protection of these waters,â€? the statement said. Groote Eylandt boasts the world’s largest manganese mine, which produces about 15 per cent of the world’s highgrade ore. The ALC’s chairman, Tony Wur-

ramarrba, said traditional owners would oppose any mining that had “signiďŹ cant cultural, environment and social impactsâ€? on Aboriginal people in the Gulf. This is not the ďŹ rst time the issue has been considered by his group. In 2010, Mr Wurramarrba said there was “complete opposition by everyone who has a traditional relationship with this country to any proposal to mine the seas around Groote Eylandtâ€?. The NLC’s chairman, Wali Wunungmurra, said on Thursday cultural integrity was paramount to both land councils. “Protecting the songlines, dreamings and traditional values of our TOs (traditional owners) will always come before anything else,â€? Mr Wunungmurra said. Mining company Northern Manganese Ltd holds exploration rights for eight of shallow marine terrain and two islands near Groote Eylandt.

Severe blow for Surf Club as fire destroys shed

Electoral News

by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER THE Gove Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club suffered a severe blow last week with a sudden and intense fire which wiped out the boat shed and thousands of dollars of equipment, along with the kitchen and caretaker’s

quarters. Miraculously, no one was hurt though as we all know, caretaker Peter Richards lost everything except the clothes he was standing in. Peter is the first one to acknowledge his faithful ‘Blue Dog’ alerting him to the smoke. Thanks to our local fire service and volunteers who were swiftly on the scene and prevented the blaze from spreading to other buildings. I know the insurance assessor visited last Friday morning, followed by hundreds of people to the evening barbecue, all keen to show support for Gove’s oldest club. Hats off to the club’s committee who have rallied stoically

under difficult circumstances to try and keep things ‘business as usual’ until a full assessment of the damage is known. THE Territory Youth Minister’s Round Table for 2012 has not one but two representatives from our region this year. Congratulations to Year 12 graduate and disability and young carer advocate, Emily Osborne, who has been accepted for another year, and Russell Burns who joins her. Russell’s work with the East Arnhem Shire at Yirrkala will make him a strong voice for all young people including Yolngu. I’M in Darwin this week with the commencement of the 2012 parliamentary year. As always, my electorate officer, Karen

Cislowski, will be in my office to assist constituents with day to day matters. I LOOK forward to getting home Friday morning and plan to be at the town hall markets on Saturday morning which will be hosted by a small but determined group of families fundraising for the highland dancers from Arafura Dance, travelling to compete in WA next month. I’ll be at the markets in a ‘mobile electorate office’ (my red marquee) for people who would like to catch up with their local member. And Saturday night I’m back at the town hall for the annual Rotary Quiz Night. If you haven’t booked a table, you better be quick.

Call for volunteers to represent the Tettitory

How do you know you have been in Gove too long?

REGIONAL Australia Minister Simon Crean last week called for community volunteers to become part of the Regional Development Australia (RDA) committee in the Northern Territory. Individuals with community, industry or government experience and knowledge of local challenges are encouraged to submit an expression of interest to represent RDA Northern Territory. “The RDA committees are more than the eyes and ears for Canberra,” Mr Crean said. “Their input is central to our place-based approach because it will help us better respond to the challenges and opportunities different regions face and enable us to embed regionalism into the way we govern in a way that can’t be unpicked. “We are looking for individuals with vision and drive - people who are local leaders with diverse skills and experience, who understand the challenges, opportunities and priorities in their communities. “Members of our RDA committees have strong relationships with their communities and bring a deep understanding of local issues.

A regular visitor to Gove has enjoyed Shelly Tonkin’s observations ‘You know you’ve been in Gove too long’ and Terry Verrall has a few thoughts of his own. When away from Gove * Yes they do start programmes on time. * The shower cold water really

“The Northern Territory faces a unique set of issues and requires a strong RDA committee to engage with local communities to maximise economic growth, flexibility, diversity and resilience.” People of all backgrounds are encouraged to submit an expression of interest, which will be considered against the skills and expertise required by the RDA committee. Previous applicants and existing members whose terms are expiring are also encouraged to submit a new expression of interest. RDA is an Australian Government initiative which is jointly funded by State and Territory Governments and local governments in some jurisdictions. For more information on the RDA network, the Expression of Interest (EoI) Handbook and an EoI form visit www. rda.gov.au? Telstra Art Award calls for entries for 29th year INDIGENOUS artists from the Northern Territory have the chance to showcase their artwork to the nation by entering the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, which opened nationally last Friday. Principal sponsor Telstra and the Northern Territory Government’s Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) are urging all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to submit their works for the chance to win the major $40,000 cash prize and increase their national profile. Telstra Country Wide local area general manager, Northern Territory, Brian O’Keefe, said this was a fantastic opportunity for local artists to put their best work forward. “Each year we see such a remarkable display of artworks entered into the Award from detailed barks to intricate canvases. The permanent inclusion of the Telstra New Media Award has brought a new dimension to the Award, creating an avenue for artists using innovative technology to share their work with the nation.” In 2012 the Telstra Art Award celebrates its 29th year and is Australia’s longest running art award dedicated to the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. MAGNT Director Pierre Arpin is at the helm of the Awards for his second year running and said he was looking forward to seeing this year’s entries. “On the eve of the 30th anniversary of this exhibition, we are thrilled to launch this call for entries. This year, we are hoping to see a rich and diverse representation of work produced by artists from around the country.”

Last year’s Award attracted more than 320 entries from Indigenous artists across Australia, with 61 artists selected as finalists, creating an exciting visual exhibition. The prize pool for the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award comprises the major $40,000 Telstra Award and the following five categories: $4000 each for Telstra General Painting Award; Telstra Bark Painting Award; Telstra Work on Paper Award; Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award (also sponsored by Telstra) and Telstra New Media Award. Entries close on March 16. For an entry form contact the exhibition coordinator at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory by phone 08 8999 8203, email natsiaa@nt.gov.au, or visit www.nt.gov.au/natsiaa

Students enter into tourist development support By CRAIG HODGES IN LATE 2011 Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism approached the Nhulunbuy High School with a challenge: would the students be able to assist with the development of a half day tour itinerary and suggest interesting topics for local tour guides to talk about? If tourism is in part about sharing ‘knowledge of place’ so the logic went, then surely our own students living in the region would have much to contribute. In the end it was the middle school at Nhulunbuy High School that rose to the challenge and Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism is delighted with the results. Nhulunbuy High School not only embraced the approach made by Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism, but thanks to the proactive support of assistant principal for the middle school Kate Smith, the idea grew into a much larger initiative. After introductions and presentations were made to year 9 classes outlining the details of a competition to involve students in the half day tour development project Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism went on to assist with arrangements for 42 students to visit the Yirrkala Arts Centre. The mid-November visit was aimed to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of the positive aspects of the Yolngu community and their culture. Bukudal School Camps founder Barayuwa Mununggurr spoke to the students during their visit to Yirrkala. He explained the connection he has to his homeland and outlined the various activities and experiences visiting student groups are involved in on his homeland Bukudal some three hours drive south of Nhulunbuy. Later that morning, Will Stubbs conducted a tour of the art centre and museum with the students. His informative - and often provocative - tour gave the students an opportunity to understand not only the significance of a renowned collection of artwork but often little

The fact that East Arnhem Land is home to two brothers who have both been Australians of the Year took many students by surprise. More recently, on Tuesday February 7, Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism was invited to attend a full school assembly at the Nhulunbuy High School. At the assembly Lirrwi briefly introduced the students and teachers to their tourism work, outlined the nature of the half day tour development project competition, and went on to award certificates to the prize winners.

Winning the first prize for an entry on the topic of Cape Arnhemwas Hayden Chizanowski. The second prize went to Monique Gilmore for her work on Pandanus Spiralis which combined scientific information with details of how the Yolngu use pandanus to this day. The third prize winner was Josh Noble who wrote a quirky and imaginative piece about Cane Toads. Principal Frank Greene and acting assistant principal Ms Smith were also presented with

certificates of appreciation acknowledging the positive outcomes that resulted from the project. As for the future Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism hopes that the soon to be established half day tours in the region will be actively supported by the students’ visiting family and friends and that the Nhulunbuy High School will take a closer look at what Bukudal School Camps has to offer local student groups in furthering their firsthand knowledge of Yolngu culture.

Your Lucky

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) Time spent helping out a friend at work may take up more of your energy than you expect. Your input will not go unnoticed, however. Romance. Don’t allow yourself to be ruled by your emotions. You need to make an important decision and must wait until you are more relaxed.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) A powerful aspect to Mercury early in the week will help to put you in top intellectual form. You will have no problem winning an argument with your superior logic. Romance. Your partner may want to go somewhere that doesn’t interest you this week. You will need to think up a solution which pleases both of you.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

Your financial situation will soon be coming under some strain. In the short term you can try to cut down on luxuries, but in the longer term you may need to find another job. Romance. You may be upset because of a recent let-down. Another get-together with this person later in the week will be much more fruitful.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Don’t let your family take up all of your time. You need more room to develop other interests and now is a good time to take a step in this direction. Romance. Be careful not to let all the attention you have been receiving recently go to your head.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Time spent talking to a new friend will show you how much you have in common with this person. This person’s advice will help you to sort out a recent dilemma. Romance. You may have to show your feelings more directly than you have up to now. If you are too subtle, you will not be noticed.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) You may need to push ahead by yourself. The people around you don’t have as much energy as you, and could be holding you back. Be especially careful of a “friend” who is giving your misleading advice and who may have a vested interest in your failing. Romance. Don’t lose your temper over an issue that is not really very important. Your partner may be a little over-sensitive at the moment.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A very long conversion with a friend could leave you exhausted. While you may want to hear how they are getting on, you will not have enough patience to listen to all the details. Romance. The marriage of a person that you know will be under discussion today. You may find that there are some important lessons to be learnt from their experiences.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Time spent worrying about the past will not help you to cope any better with the present. You need to move on and forget about a mistake which cannot be reversed. Romance. Communications with your partner should be very good at the moment. Use this opportunity to sort out any niggling problems.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Make sure that you don’t get involved in a situation which could be difficult to get out of. A meeting later in the week will help you to understand things from the other person’s point of view. Romance. A trip away from home will help to inject more life into your relationship. You will both enjoy each other’s company.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Don’t allow yourself to be lead astray by well-meaning advice. You would be better off working out what to do by yourself. Romance. A favourable aspect to Neptune later in the week will help you to use your intuition to understand an issue which has been difficult to solve logically.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) A new contact will prove to be a mixed blessing. Although this person wants to help you, and seems genuine enough, there will be some areas of their personality which make you suspicious. Romance. Your own needs are just as important as those of your partner. This week you must try hard to create a better balance in your relationship.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Don’t allow anything to come in the way of a recent promise which you made to someone who matters to you. It is important that you don’t let this person down. Romance. This will be a good time to heal your relationship after some recent tension. The more you give the easier it will be to resolve these issues.

15 - 21 February 2012

The report shows the NT Government spends $6548 per person compared to $5250 nationally. The report shows that during 2009/10, the Territory employed 1.7 hospital doctors per 1000 people, one of the highest in the country. The national figure was 1.4. The number of hospital nurses employed in the Territory during that period outstripped other jurisdictions with 6.7 per 1000 people. Nationally, the figure was 5.1 nurses. “The Northern Territory Government is continuing to improve our health system by providing affordable, quality and accessible health care, and this report shows that the Territory is leading the way across the nation, Mr Vatskalis said. “The NT Labor Government is committed to improving the health status of all Territorians, increasing health funding by 149 per cent since coming into Government in 2001. “The NT employs the most hospital staff in Australia, around 14.9 per 1000 compared to Australian average 11.3 per 1000. “Additionally, the report again confirms the Territory Government spends more than any other Australian jurisdiction on its public hospitals. The report also found the NT to have the most public hospital beds per weighted population in Australia. In 2009-10, NT had 3.1 public hospital beds per 1000 population, above the national average of 2.6 beds. Mr Vatskalis said the NT Government had made huge inroads in Indigenous health outcomes, particularly with Indigenous infant mortality rates having halved since 2000. “We are making real progress on Indigenous health outcomes in the Territory, and while we know there is more to do, we have certainly made positive strides with the report showing a decrease from 22.9 infant deaths to 11.4 deaths per 1000. The Northern Territory also has the best access to dental services in Australia with 12 dentists per 100 000 population compared to national average of 7.7. We have more than double the number of dentist per 100 000 population than Tasmania (5.5 per 100 000) and more people access public dental than nationally.

Reporter found dead in Aceh while journalist arrested in West Papua REPORTERS Without Borders is concerned by a series of media freedom violations in Indonesia in the past few days. At the same time, it has learned of the death of Darma Sahlan, a journalist working for the weekly Monitor Medan, whose body was found in Lawe Two, in Aceh province (in the north of the island of Sumatra), on 5 February. “We offer our condolences to Sahlan’s family and we urge the authorities to do everything possible to shed light on his death, and to not rule out the possibility that he was murdered in connection with his work,” Reporters Without Borders said. “They must also do what is necessary to guarantee the safety of journalists and freedom of information. We are very worried by the problems for journalists throughout the country and in West Papua in particular.” Sahlan’s body was found in a ditch near his motorcycle. The cause of death is not clear. His wife told Serambi Indonesia that she thought he was murdered and that the body was then placed in the ditch where he was found. She said there were lacerations and other injuries on the body. She also reported that he had a heated phone conversation with someone a month ago about one of his stories. The police are investigating his death. According to an autopsy, he sustained a blow to the head from a blunt object and injuries to the face. Skid marks were also found near the body. Petr Zamecnik, a Czech journalist working for Fincentrum, was arrested on 8 February after photographing a pro-independence demonstration in Manokwari, in West Papua province. A local police spokesman said Zamecnik

had entered the country on a tourist visa and claimed to be doing a report on places of interest to tourists but was unable to prove this. He has been transferred to the immigration authorities, who are to decide if he will be deported. Andri Jufri, a young Indonesian journalist working for Kompas TV, was beaten up by members of a motorcycle gang as he was returning home on the evening of 5 February in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province. He sustained injuries to the face and body, and his glasses, helmet and motorcycle were damaged. The VIVAnews website said Makassar’s gangs do not like journalists covering the illegal motorcycle races they organize. Blocking Twitter accounts The Minister of Communication and Information Technologies has meanwhile announced that anonymous and “offensive” Twitter accounts will be blocked. He gave no details but Indonesia’s Information and Electronic Law provides for sanctions for blasphemy, fraud, threats, pornography and gambling. Indonesia’s 55 million Internet users take a great interest in social issues including corruption and sectarian violence. Indonesia is ranked 146th out of 179 countries in the latest Reporters Without Borders press freedom index. In the troubled West Papua region, at least two journalists were killed, five were kidnapped and 18 were attacked in 2011. Foreign journalists who want to visit the region must apply in advance to the Information Ministry for accreditation, which takes time, and they must agree to be accompanied if they obtain it. Only three were allowed to visit West Papua last year.

BMX riders saddle up in Perth By DAVE BAXTER AFTER a late afternoon flight the BMX squad touched down in Perth just in time to see what extreme weather the city can dish up with a heat wave in full swing. The coaches organised the truck and mini bus and it’s time to hit the road to find the camp for the next couple of days. After the usual camp set up it was time to hit the sack and there were some very tired campers. Wednesday and after the usual bike preparation there was training this morning at Hills which is a local track with Jade the BMX coach refining some of the techniques that the riders are going to be using in Bunbury and as the heat is quite bad again today the team are going to cool of at the local beach before returning to the track for a race meet that night. Thursday was training again at another local track at Wanneroo with Jade and then a cool off afternoon and recovery session at Hillary’s wharf where they got to have some fun on the water slides there. Friday they travelled to Bunbury where they are staying at the Eden scout camp. These types of camps are the perfect place for sporting groups to stay as the pricing is very reasonable and they have all the facilities there so all meals can be prepared and served and everyone is all together which helps to build the team atmosphere. The track at Bunbury had most of the squad getting their first look at one of the most technical tracks in Australia. Only being a couple of years old it has all the latest features and a five metre high start hill which, looking from the top, would be quite daunting racing flat out to the bottom. It was an open practice in the afternoon and the Territory team had time booked on the track

for a private training session which was going to be invaluable for the weekends racing. Although things were about to change for the worse for a couple of riders when they were getting a bit too adventurous on some of the more challenging jumps and they came to grief. One rider from Darwin has a broken wrist and he is out for the weekend and likely the next month or so but the other rider also from Darwin wasn’t as lucky if that is the right wording. He has a much more severe break and it looks like he will have to go back to hospital to have more surgery which is very unfortunate. Saturday’s racing came round and another local rider came to grief in practice and had to sit the rest of practice out nursing some very bad grazing down one leg and some bruising to the ribs. He wasn’t going to miss his time trial but that was as far as his weekend was going as his injuries were making it too hard to ride. The rest of the squad were having better luck posting some very good lap times on a very difficult track. Judging by some of the moto times a lot of riders were having a difficult time and the first aid attendants were kept busy all day. Sunday was going to be a short day as the weather was turning for the worse with wind gusts up around the 20 knots and the first time trials were completed when the chief race commissarie decided it was to dangerous for the riders. It was then decided to run another time trial and the points awarded on both these used to determine a round winner in each division. That then was pretty well the end of the tour. All that was left to do was pack up all the bikes again for the last time and head back to Perth to fly out on Monday. Monday had the team at Perth airport and going their separate

ways, some heading to Darwin, some back to Alice Springs and the odd rider back to Nhulunbuy. I’m sure all the riders want to thank Andy and all the coaches for such a great job they have done. All the parents that helped along the way and their parents for letting them have the opportunity to participate in such a great trip. I’m sure it won’t be long and most of them will be back into training at their home tracks preparing for the next rounds of the Champ Bikz, the ACT state titles and then the national titles which this year are being contested at Mt Gambier in South Australia.

Some time to relax for the riders.

Riders are concentrating ready for the start.

Gove kids get a kick out of Brumby visit

SCHOOL kids around the Gove Peninsula had a visit by Brumbies player Anthony Hegarty last week. He was accompanied by NTRU Indigenous Rugby Development Officer Mattie Connop and Brumbies operations manager James Brand as they visited the three schools in town and also went out to Yirrkala seeing 120 kids.

As well as visiting the schools they also met members of East Arnhem Rugby League at Hindle Oval where they watched the team play and offered them some comments on their play. Hegarty said he was struggling with the humidity in the Top End. He had played in the first trial in Darwin on the previous weekend and the team was then heading to

Cairns where they played another trial against the Queensland Reds last Saturday night.. He noted the players here were conditioned to the weather. He said, “Hard tackles and hard defence all win tackles.” Hegarty, 24, played rugby league from six-years-old and switched to rugby union when he was 13. He played in the St George League, with

Queanbeyan Whites and for Manly in the Shute Shield. He also played in the Australian Schoolboys U18. The hooker urged players to follow their dreams and to dream big. He said it was great to be able to let the kids get the feel of Rugby and watch them go through the drills The Brumbies have a three year agreement with the NT Government which sees them playing in the NT

and visiting remote communities. Last Monday, as well as sending a player to Nhulunbuy, other players also visited the Tiwi Islands and Jabirua. They handed out posters to the primary school and three EARU players received a shirt. A signed shirt from the team was also presented to coach, Sean ‘Ocker’ O’Connor for the EARU.

Ladies get ready for the 2012 Airnorth Fishing Classic

THE 2012 Airnorth Ladies Fishing Classic is set down for March 17 and 18. Their will be a briefing clinic held at the Walkabout Lodge on March 11. The competition the following weekend will start with lines in at 7am and out at 5pm with weigh stations at the Gove Boat Club, Big Bromby and BanuBAnu. Teams can be two, three or four ladies, however, the skipper of the boat can be either male or female. Nomination forms are available at Gove Tackleworld. The cost is $80 for an adult member, $100 for a non-member and a junior (under 16) is $60. Ladies who fished the competition last year are current members and organisers have a database print out for anyone who may not remember. Last year 106 ladies entered the competition and organisers are hoping to exceed that number this year. The catch, measure, photograph and release conditions were imposed for the first time last year and proved very popular with the anglers.
