Cowboy Jones rounds up kids on the field
Cowboy Ben Jones dropped into Nhulunbuy and spent some time with local youngsters with Steven Marawili (8) and Leon Wanambi (10) during the Cowboys’ visit to the Northern Territory to play the Sydney Roosters. By Marjo Hallowell ENCOURAGING youngsters to follow their dreams was at the heart of a visit by North Queensland Cowboy player Ben Jones last week. Jones arrived on Thursday with NRL ambassadors David Peachey and Adam Peek, both ex-players. Peachey said he had been an ambassador for
the game since he retired five years ago. Last year there were four ambassadors for the game but that number has swelled this year to 50. “We all want to promote the game and encourage youngsters throughout the country to follow their dreams and believe they can achieve,” he said. “Kids are kids and we want to encourage them to aim for whatever they choose.” The visit, which coincided with the Cowboys
playing the Roosters in Darwin on the weekend, is about making a difference and spreading some key messages around healthy living and lifestyles and goal setting and aspirations - all done through the vehicle of rugby league and the resources made available through the game. The players attending included some teenagers but most were primary school aged children.

Surf club president Greg Whelan said about 50 people enjoyed a cooked breakfast and lunch and a terrific day of ambrose golf. “Lee Peters and Al Fanning coordinated the day and did a fantastic job. At the end of the day $3100 was handed over to the surf club which was very much appreciated,” Mr Whelan said. “Pacal also generously donated $2000 as part of the community assistance scheme. “During the week Steve Dowzard also presented the surf club with a cheque for $1000 which was from the very generous electrical team in ferrosilt at the plant.” Mr Whelan said he was grateful for all the contributions and it showed the community was really supporting their local surf club.

Youth week focuses on suicide and substance abuse prevention
NEWS Josiah, Cameron and Joshua with DJ Charlie Templar.
By Marjo Hallowell
TEENAGER Emily Osborne was the driving force behind the Youth Week celebrations in Gove on the weekend. Miss Osborne organised the suicide and substance abuse prevention day at the town hall and she, along with fellow Gove-ite Russell Burns, is on the Youth Ministers Round Table of Young Territorians. Funding was secured from Beyond Blue, a national suicide prevention group, to help finance the event which featured representatives from a number of local community organisations including Anglicare, Miwatj, YouthWorx from Darwin, NT Early
Intervention Pilot Program, East Arnhem Shire Council community patrol and Alchohol and Other Drugs. Gove FM broadcast live from the event and Charlie Templar was the DJ for the event. The Corporation donated the use of the town hall. The duo Tayla Edwards and Alex Parfitt and soloist Chayse Aston provided the entertainment. Miss Osborne said well over 100 attended and she was keen to see the feedback. “Young people living in remote areas need to have activities to keep themselves occupied and the organisations represented here are showing
them what positive activities they can become involved in. “They are also letting young people in crisis know there is help out there. “Surveys carried out last year showed boredom was a major problem among the youth of the area. “Youth suicides are often not reported as such and we need to not dwell in the past but know the facts and alternatives for the future. “It is the 18-25 year-olds that we need to focus on. If they are not interested in sport we need to find out what they would like to see in the area.”

The Kap’Yong Memorial Service last year. THE Kap’Yong Memorial Service will be held at the cenotaph in Gove on April 24. Muster is at 10.50am for the service remembering those who fought in the Korean War. For a number of years the members of the Gove Peninsula RSL would find a wreath at the cenotaph the day before ANZAC Day and one year they discovered that Snowy Oakes was remembering those who served at Kap’Yong. held Seoul. On April 24 the Australian and a Canadian battalion supported by a New Zealand artillery regiment stalled the Chinese advance. For their contribution the 3RAR was awarded a US Presidential Citation. The Australians withdrew on April 24 when they were replaced with the Canadian forces. Without their courage and devotion the Chinese would have invaded Seoul. Since finding out about why Snowy Oakes was leaving the wreath more than 20 years ago the Gove Peninsula RSL has been remembering Kap’ Yong Day and invite members of the public to do the same.

Major drug bust at Alyangula
A postal shipment of 900g of cannabis was intercepted at Alyangula. Photo courtesy of NT Police. A GROOTE Eylandt man faced court in Darwin after Northern Territory Police arrested him for possession and supply of a commercial quantity of cannabis following the discovery of 900 grams of the drug in a package sent through the post. Sergeant Peter Winton, of the Alyangula Police Station, said Police will allege the drugs, which have a street value on Groote Eylandt in excess of $90,000, were destined for distribution in the local community. “Nine hundred grams
is a substantial seizure of cannabis for this location,” Sgt Winton said. “Cannabis has a devastating effect in this island community. It is disappointing to see that greedy individuals seek to profit from trafficking these harmful drugs.” The 35-year-old was arrested on Thursday, April 5, at Alyangula and was remanded to appear in Darwin Magistrates court. Members of the public with information on drug dealers are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Additional funding for legal aid THE NT Legal Aid Commission has welcomed the announcement by NT Attorney General Rob Knight that it will receive additional recurrent funding in the 2012 Territory Budget. Suzan Cox QC, director of the NT Legal Aid Commission, said that access to legal assistance is vital to the functioning of civic society and access to legal advice and representation assists in the smooth functioning of the courts. “Legal aid services to the community include free legal information and education to all members of the NT community. Legal advice and representation services are provided primarily in the areas of family law
and criminal law to those in the community who would be unable to afford the cost of legal assistance,” Ms Cox said. “The NT Legal Aid Commission will continue to work collaboratively with legal and other services in the NT and the private legal profession to ensure that people in the NT, particularly those who are disadvantaged, understand and have access to assistance to protect and enforce their legal rights and interests. “We are working with both Territory and Commonwealth governments to ensure that appropriate levels of legal assistance continue.” Ms Cox said.

On the beat with NT Police Axe attack over card game A WOMAN was taken to Gove District Hospital on Monday, April 9, after she was hit on the head with an axe. After a dispute over a card game at Dhalinybuy at 2.30pm, a 19-year-old man left the game and returned with an axe. He allegedly hit his 21-year-old partner over the head several times with a 35 centimetre axe and she was taken to hospital by bush taxi for treatment. The man was taken into custody and questioned by police on Tuesday when he was charged with aggravated assault and going armed in public in the community which is one and a half hours drive from Nhulunbuy. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said the man will front the Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court on May 2. “The woman has stitches to her head and face and is in a stable condition. It would appear the man has used the blunt end of the axe in the attack.”
Protective custody for 15 drunks NHULUNBUY police took a total of 15 drunks into protective custody last Thursday night. On April 5. Police observed both men and women who were extremely intoxicated around the town centre. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said he was unimpressed that so many had so much to drink that it warranted them being kept in custody overnight for their own protection. “It is always a grave concern when people have too much to drink and cannot look after themselves,” he said.

Agency looking for the new NT model THE search is on in Darwin for an international model. Agency IMG Models together with South Australia’s modelling agency, Pride Models, will be conducting Darwin’s first ever international model search at Casuarina Square this weekend to scout the undiscovered model talent Darwin has to offer. The competition will be judged by industry leaders from Paris and New York with the most promising new face winning a modelling contract with IMG Models. The judging panel will consist of Jeni Rose the vice president of IMG Models Paris, David Cunningham, vice president of IMG Models New York, and Christabel Dundon the managing director of Pride Models in Adelaide. Christabel Dundon said Darwin is extremely lucky to have international modelling scouts of this calibre in town. “IMG Models is at the forefront of the modelling
world representing some of the biggest names in the business including Australia’s own Miranda Kerr, Gemma Ward, and Montana Cox, and international super-models Lara Stone, Gisele Bundchen, Dara Werbowy, and Ajak Deng,” Ms Dundon said. The winner will also win flights to Sydney to have their first photo shoot with one of Australia’s leading photographers. This is an opportunity to be seen by some of the most influential local, national, and worldwide industry leaders, with the intention of launching one young hopeful into the competitive but exciting international modelling scene. In total the winner of the 2012 IMG Models and Pride Models International Model Search will win a contract with IMG models (New York and Paris) and prizes to the value of $2000 comprised of a return trip to Sydney including flights and accommodation, and a $1000 portfolio shoot. The search starts at 1pm on Sunday April 22.

LAST September the Gove leadership team from Pacific Aluminium (then Rio Tinto Alcan) accepted a personal invitation from Rirratjingu family members to join them on Country at Gulurunga. The group learnt of the challenges of living off the land which included the lack of access to fresh water. Two bores were available but for many years water was not accessible as there was no water pump severely impacting on the Rirratjingu family and their ability to spend time at their place of cultural significance. The Gove leadership team committed to investigating the installation of a permanent pump and a few months later a solution was found. It was agreed a Sun Mill solar pump, which acts like a windmill, would be the most appropriate solution fro the Yalangbara bore and a traditional mono pump for the Gulurunga bore. A working bee on March 17 saw a dedicated group, which included leadership team members and contractors JBM and NOV Mono, set off to get the pump up and running. Host Witiyana Marika and family members arrived as the water started to flow. Mr Marika and his family were extremely appreciative of the effort, time and equipment and now plan to spend more time there. Gove Operations thanked JBM, NOV mono, GIS, Gove Operations site workshop and Sodexo for contributing their time and materials for this worthwhile project.

Time to spray mission grass ing before it seeds. With the mission grass starting to seed at the moment, and with this break in the rain, it is a good opportunity for members of the public to spray this weed with herbicide,” Ms Lee said. “Spraying before mission grass goes to seed will reduce further spread and establishment. Landholders, particularly in the rural area, are encouraged to make use of this unseasonably dry weather and spray exotic grasses on their property before they go to seed. “We need to be vigilant about weed control and be mindful of the damage that invasive species can cause, especially on pastoral properties.” For more information on how to identify mission grass and other invasive grasses such as gamba grass please call the Weed Management Branch on 8999 4567. WEED management officers from the Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport (NRETAS) are urging all landholders and members of the public to take decisive action against the invasion of mission grass (Cenchrus polystachios). Originally introduced as a pasture grass mission grass has invaded bush land and private properties right across the Top End. Mission grass has many characteristics which enable it to aggressively out-compete native plants. The impacts of mission grass range from increasing fire danger to reducing biodiversity. NRETAS strategic weed management planner Geraldine Lee said mission grass can be easily recognised by the fluffy golden to purplish seed heads which start to form about this time of year. “The trick to good control is spray-

Local band to appear at Bassinthegrass
Electoral News
by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER NATIONAL Youth Week kicked off last Friday with the NT Battle of the School Bands held in Darwin with Yirrkala band, N.E.A.L. Boys, taking out line honours. Their prize package
includes a gig at Bassinthegrass alongside some of Australia’s top music acts in Darwin at the end of May. The competition, just three years old and funded by NT Government, has been dominated by our region with Sleeveheads from Nhulunbuy winning in the inaugural year. Well done to N.E.A.L. Boys for this outstanding achievement. While literacy and numeracy are critical, core activities for students our schools provide so much more to support the growth and development of young people. Youth Week activities in Nhulunbuy commenced on
Saturday at the town hall with a forum and live music coordinated by local Emily Osborne who is a hard-working member of the Youth Minister’s Round Table. While the overall turn-out was disappointing, it certainly didn’t escape my notice that people from organisations such as the Shire, Anglicare, Youth Worx, Alcohol and Other Drugs, gave up their time to be there. I’M travelling to Elcho Island today and returning Friday and will be visiting Gawa at the top of the island as well as Galiwin’ku and a quick stopover at the Homeland of Mapuru on the return trip. Education, health
and Homelands are always high on the itinerary but so too is housing. Galiwin’ku’s major housing program (SIHIP) is coming to a close and I’ll be inspecting the new subdivision which is part of 90 new homes for the community. ANZAC Day services are planned for next Wednesday with the traditional dawn service scheduled for 5.45pm at Gove Boat Club followed by the 11.00am service in Nhulunbuy at the Cenotaph. Thanks to Mo McKay and Ivor Alexander who have managed the ANZAC Day planning and arrangements for more years than they can probably remember. Lest we forget.
A man with old-fashioned values who cared about family Phillip Clyde McKelson April 30, 1952 - December 21, 2011
PHILLIP McKelson was born in a small sea side town in Victoria called St Leonards and has a sister Carol. He began working in hotels at the age of 17 and his first position was at the Great Northern Hotel in Cairns. Since then he never deviated away from the hospitality industry and managed large and successful hotels in Victoria and in Queensland for over 35 years. Big Band venues were his specialty and Phillip was employed to oversee the renovations of many hotels needing a facelift and a greater turnover. He was well known for his dedication to his job and was very well liked by staff and was known for his fairness. His work took him to country towns such as Dubbo where the hotel underwent massive renovations during his employment and huge increase in trade. Phillip never turned away from a challenge in his work and Gove was no exception dedicating over three years of his life to the Arnhem Club. He was a compassionate man and cared for others very much. Phillip raised money immediately for Rachel’s family - the gorgeous 18-year-old who passed away in Gove in a car accident. He was totally shattered by this tragedy and it never left him and he attended Rachel’s funeral personally in country Victoria. On a personal level Phillip was a very giving man. The word that most describes him is dependable. His word was his bond and he never went back on his word. He had old-
VALE Phillip McKelson fashioned values and cared about providing for his family more than himself. He was a ‘rock’ for his family - he was always reliable - always dependable and he never let you down. Phillip always enjoyed a game of golf spending the morning with a friend on the golf course if and when he could and was always a member of the local pistol club wherever he went (including Gove) winning many competitions over the years. He had a love for Harley Davidsons owning a few in his life time and loved

nothing more than to ride with his friends up the mountains of the Gold Coast which he did this every Sunday for years. Phillip was ill for months in Gove, he just didn’t know what was wrong. He returned to his family on the Gold Coast. On October 14, 2011, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given three months to live and he died 10 weeks after diagnoses. He is survived by three children Justin, Benjamin and Emily and three grandchildren.

18 - 24 April 2012
Your Lucky
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) Time spent helping out a friend at work may take up more of your energy than you expect. Your input will not go unnoticed, however. Romance. Don’t allow yourself to be ruled by your emotions. You need to make an important decision and must wait until you are more relaxed.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Once you have started a new project nobody will be able to stop you! Your momentum will help you to push through a barrier which has stopped other people in their tracks. Romance. Your partner may find it hard to cope with all your excess energy! A powerful aspect to Mars later in the week could make you a little tense: do your best to use your excess energy constructively.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A few negative comments this week may sap your confidence for a while. You need to take the remarks in context, however, and not overreact. Romance. A person whom you have known for some time may still be interested in you. They will do their best to pretend not to be interested, but their actions will give them away.
FOR KIDS
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Be careful that problems at work don’t spill over into your home-life. So long as you try hard to be patient, everything will be resolved. Romance. You may need a little extra emotional support from your partner at the moment. Communications between you will be especially strong, but be careful not to be too demanding.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Activities which don’t need much money will give you a chance to get back on your feet financially. Some recent extravagances have taken their toll. Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will give your love-life a push in the right direction. A romantic get-together this week will put your relationship onto much firmer ground after a recent misunderstanding.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
FINDWORD No. 94
A surprise move later in the week may leave you wondering what is going on. Talk to a person whom you can trust – your other colleagues may not be so quick to tell you everything. Romance. A power-struggle between you and your partner will not help either of you. Do your best to settle a recent dispute in a way which satisfies both sides.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may find it difficult to tolerate people who don’t know what they are doing. You won’t appreciate having to clear up a mess caused by someone else. Romance. If you are able to relax properly this will be an excellent week for both of you. Be especially careful not to get into arguments, especially ones involving money. You won’t be in a mood for compromise at the moment!
A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) At times this week you will need to spend more time by yourself. You have a lot of work to get through and won’t be happy if you are constantly interrupted. Romance. A new relationship may pick up speed faster than you expect. Very soon you will have to make a decision about how quickly you want to get involved with this person.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A kind word will go a– long way. Your enthuFor all your printing needs www.lotsa.com.au siasm and energy will be appreciated by the people around you; however you must be sympathetic to people who are not so dynamic. Romance. A favourable aspect to Neptune this week will improve your powers of intuition, just when you most need them!
MUDDY RIVER
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Your ability to spot a financial opportunity will help to bring in some money just when you need it most. Make sure you don’t take any more risks than you have to, however. Romance. Time spent with someone whom you hardly know could prove interesting. This person may be much keener on you than you realised. Don’t expect any dramatic developments for the time being, however.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A meeting with friends may be more enjoyable than you expect. Make sure that you steer clear of a topic which has caused friction in the past, however. Romance. This is not the best time to ask for any favours. A favourable aspect to Mercury right at the end of the week will improve communication with your partner.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) You may be feeling as though you are everybody’s servant at the moment! Don’t let other people make you feel guilty for not helping them. Romance. This will be an excellent time for romance: however, you should be careful of vague promises which are not backed up by action.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) You will feel that a lack of ready money is limiting your activities. Something which you have been planning will have to be postponed due to lack of funds. Romance. You may need to give in a little more in order to put a recent disagreement with your partner to rest. You won’t achieve anything by prolonging the dispute.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Your mind will be focused on your work. It is important to be clear about what you want to achieve in your career, and to make steps in the right direction. Romance. A domestic crisis will have to be sorted out before it gets out of hand. You may not be in the best of moods when you discover who was responsible!
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A favourable aspect to Uranus will make you especially creative this week. Time spent developing a new idea will pay off many times over. Romance. Your positive mood will help to give your love-life a boost. An evening with a new friend will work out much better than expected.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) You will be extremely adventurous, and will need to find an outlet for your energy. If you don’t find one, you may start to take your frustration out on other people. Romance. If you are starting a new relationship, you may want to wait a few weeks before making a major move. This relationship will take a while to build up strength.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Don’t let problems at work spill over into your social life: if you are not able to get a proper perspective on the situation it will be impossible to deal with it effectively. Romance. The next few days should be an especially good time for romance. Don’t appear to be too eager, however.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A move to a different job may not solve all your problems. Before you consider such a drastic step, you should think hard about the advantages of your present work. Romance. Time spent extending your circle of friends will pay off in an unexpected way. You may need to be the one who takes the initiative, however.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Don’t miss an important opportunity later in the week. A favourable aspect to Jupiter will make this an especially good time for making money. Romance. You will be able to get on much better with your partner this week. You may be quite surprised when you hear their slant on a recent disagreement.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Some changes are coming up, and you will have to keep a clear head to decide on the best course of action. Try to avoid getting into a disagreement with your boss. Romance. Your generous mood will help you to attract a new admirer. Put this person to the test before you take their approaches seriously!
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
A difficult aspect to Saturn could make you quite negative at times. You may feel that there is no light at the end of the tunnel! A chance event later in the week will turn things around faster than you expect. Romance. A dream about your partner will help you to understand your recent behaviour towards them. A long discussion will help to iron out any problems.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Your work will be getting you down at the moment. This is not the best time for a major change, however, and you must be cautious about making a major move which you might regret later. Romance. Don’t change a decision once you have made it. Your partner needs to have some clarity and direction from you at the moment.

ARTS
Local artists represented at Desart and Melbourne exhibitions
Barrupu Yunupingu, Beverly Knight and Ruby Alderton.
LOCAL artist Barrupu Yunupingu attended the Desart conference in Alice Springs on the way to open her exhibition at Alcaston Gallery in Melbourne. Organiser of the Conference for Arts Centre Managers Michelle Culpitt said in her review of the conference: “My epiphany was listening to Barrupu Yunupingu speaking at length in Yolngu Matha - the saltwater language on Desart country - her worker Will Stubbs, 17 years on the job, and 18-year-old Yirrkala woman Ruby Alderton coordinating youth diversion programs at the Buku Larrngay Mulka printmaking room. It is possible. It’s not a dream, follow the source of culture and all kinds of benefits can flow.” In Melbourne the response was similarly positive. The exhibition, The Memory of Fire, consisted of a new set of works all painted on the art centre premises. Several of the major works were pre-sold prior to the exhibition including to state institutional galleries. Alcaston Gallery is an important gallery nationally and it is a significant honour to be represented by them. Only one other artist from the Miwatj region works through Alcaston and that is Barrupu’s famous sister Gulumbu. Principal of the gallery is Beverly Knight is a long-term Essendon Bombers and Tiwi Bombers board member. Ms Knight was so impressed by Ruby Alderton’s work on the Yuta project that she invited her to an internship at the gallery over the next two weeks. Miss Alderton then opened the exhibition Yuta which is supported by the Australia Council and opened at The Ownership Project in Fitzroy on the April 17. It features work by artists as young as 12 who had been previously disengaged from school and work.

The team as they left Gove last week. Ling, Dwin Rynski, Mali Martin, Dakota Priestly, Caleb Juda and Shandyn Moody. All are students at Nhulunbuy High School and AIEW Tracy Ah Sam chaperoned the group during their trip. The group aged between 12 and 14 were very excited and nervous when leaving Gove in the anticipation of being part of this National event. The program consists of education and training with specific athletic training given. Competition events were held in long jump, discus, javelin and relay. We look forward in seeing the results of their efforts next week.
TEN young people from Nhulunbuy have been given the exciting opportunity to fly to Melbourne and participate in the National Indigenous Athletic Championships which were held in conjunction with the Australian Athletic Championships in Victoria last week. The championships were on between April 11 and 14 and the young athletes also had the opportunity to see some of Australia’s best athletes start their journey to London for the Olypmics. The athletes from Nhulunbuy made up the majority of the NT team and included; Gerard Yunupingu, Maryanne Yunupingu, Shakira Baxter, Kyaciah Yibaruk, Moesha
Castella said. “They have had many obstacles to overcome, but this is a significant achievement for each of them, their families and their communities.” The other athletes are Kelsey Youngblutt from Palm Island, Queensland and Tegan Pigram from Derby, Western Australia. The three runners each successfully completed a 30 kilometre test run in February as part of the Stromlo 30km Lightning Strike, and along with other IMP squad members, have completed units of competence towards obtaining a Certificate III in Community Recreation and have learnt skills that they can now take back to their communities. The team travelled to Sydney last week for final preparations before they flew to Boston on Friday for the competition on Monday of this week.
LOCAL athlete Jamie Wanungmurra took part in the Boston Marathon on Monday. Mr Wanungumurra from Yirrkala is one of three indigenous athletes to tackle the 42km marathon. They began their journey in April last year when Rob de Castella and his Indigenous Marathon Project conducted a national tryout tour where 20 promising runners were selected as part of the 2011 New York Marathon squad, and while these three runners didn’t make it to New York, they have spent countless hours training and preparing for the chance to represent Indigenous Australia in the world’s oldest marathon. Jamie exchanged his remote surroundings for the streets of Boston and we will have results of his efforts next week. “The journey to the start line for these runners has not been an easy one,” Mr de

Simply the best on show in Darwin
Cowboys hammer Roosters in first NRL match in Darwin since ‘95 By ALF WILSON
Johnathan JT Thurston in action in a training run. INSET TOP: Matt Bowen in the post match media conference.
By ALF WILSON TWO of the world’s best rugby league players in Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen were on show when the North Queensland Cowboys met the Sydney Roosters in Darwin on Saturday April 14. It was the first NRL competition match played in the NT since the Penrith versus Balmain Tigers match way back in 1995. Thurston played at five eighth for the Cowboys and Bowen at fullback as the North Queensland side tried to bounce back from a 42-18 loss to comp leaders Melbourne Storm in Townsville on April 7. Before Saturday’s game the Roosters defeated the Gold Coast Titans 18-12 and were placed fifth on the ladder with four wins from six games. By comparison the Cowboys were in eight spot with three

wins and as many losses. The Cowboys players left Townsville on Tuesday and spent five days in the NT in the lead up to the game. Two days before leaving Thurston received his golden boot which he earned as the World Player of the Year following last year’s Four Nation’s Series in England. The gifted Thurston is a Queensland State of Origin and Australian Test player and considered among the top bracket of rugby league backs in the world. Bowen hails from Hope Vale Aboriginal Community near Cooktown in far north Queensland and has been one of the form backs in the NRL this season. Last week in Townsville Bowen became an ambassador for Ronald McDonald House which accommodates families of sick people who are in nearby Townsville Hospital. The Cowboys have many supporters in the Territory but the Roosters will have fans as well.
MORE than 10,000 spectators watched the North Queensland Cowboys hammer the Sydney Roosters 50-12 at Darwin’s TIO Stadium on Saturday night. It was the first NRL competition match played in the NT since the Penrith versus Balmain Tigers match way back in 1995. The crowd of 10,008 included people from around the Territory who had travelled to Darwin for a game which was showed nationally on pay television. The Cowboys enjoy plenty of support in the NT and scored nine tries to two in a great performance. It was the in the first half the Cowboys set up the win with tries in the eighth and 11th minutes to centre Antonio Winterstein. Ashley Graham, champion fullback Matt Bowen and Kalifa Faifal Loa also scored tries to see the Cowboys bolt to a 28-nil halftime lead. One statistic which ensured the Cowboys dominance was that the North Queensland side enjoyed a massive 67 per cent of possession in the initial 40 minutes during which they completed 18 of their 23 sets of tackles. It was 33 degree heat and the Roosters players were in a chilled dressing room at the break. Roosters made a mini comeback with two early second half tries and had a third disallowed and reduced the deficit to 12-28. However the Cowboys rallied and book forward Jason Taumalolo scored two tries with singles to Bowen and halfback Ray Thompson. The crowd enjoyed the opportunity to see two of the world’s best in five eighth Johnathan Thurston and Bowen. Big forward James Tamou had a blinder for the Cowboys. It was no easy feat defeating the highly rated Brian Smith coached Roosters who had won four of their previous six games. The Cowboys were coming off a 42-18 loss to competition leaders Melbourne Storm and the win saw them move up the ladder with four victories from seven NRL matches. Cowboys players and officials arrived in Darwin four days before the game and proved popular with locals and some conducted coaching clinincs.

Abednego in the swim STUDENTS in Abednego house at Nhulunbuy Christian College are still celebrating after taking out the swimming carnival championship title for the third year in a row. Enthusiasm hit an all time high at this year’s annual sporting event with cheering heard in the aisles of Woolies in the centre of town. Students from Transition to Year 9 churned up and down the pool at Gove’s Aquatic Centre in individual and team events with family and friends cheering them on. Ultimately Abednego compiled the most points just defeating Meshach with Shadrach in third place. Leading up to the carnival, all students participated in two weeks of daily swimming and water safety lessons through Royal Life Saving with coaches Jamie Kokles-Ridgway, Jacci Hutchison, Kath Hewitt, Alice Rudolph, Rachael Verdel, Kristy Prowse, Amanda Strike and John Burns. NCC principal Mr Steve Venour said the carnival was a terrific community event with older students helping the younger ones and parents and staff working together to run the day. “It is always fantastic to see the transition kids experience their first carnival usually a little nervous before the first race but by the end joining in confidently in everything they can,” Mr Venour said. “The parent student race as always was hotly contested and there were some really impressive individual results in the senior student races. We’d like to say a huge thank you to our parent community for their wonderful support.”
Parent Karoline Holland is off to a flying start as part of the parent versus student relay race. For the record, the parent team won on the day.
Hamish Ly from Year 3 cheers his Shadrach team mates on.

Gove girls tame the wild west The Wild West Highland Dancing Tour would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of the dancers, their parents, Arafura Dance Association, and generous sponsors Pacific Aluminium, Rotary Club of Nhulunbuy, Lynne Walker MLA, Nhulunbuy Corporation Ltd and BC Autos. Huge thanks also to the community of Nhulunbuy for whole heartedly supporting all the fundraising activities. As a dance teacher I am incredibly proud to have such a talented group of lovely young girls as role models and representatives of Arafura Dance Association. The girls compete on an individual basis but their genuine care and support for their team members is heart warming. Their commitment is remarkable but it’s their passion for dance that make our classes fun and
something we look forward to every week. They are a pleasure to teach. When asked what her favourite part of the Wild West Tour was, Megan Donovan said: “Going to Kalgoorlie Dance Academy studio and having lessons with Sharon Greatorex. The whole trip was lots of fun.” Megan said she started Highland Dancing nearly six years ago because she “wanted to start dance classes, and after trying a couple of different styles she loved Highland straight away”. Hannah Devon said her favourite part of the trip was meeting Sharon Greatorex but she “loved Kalgoorlie and Perth, and going in the competitions”. Hannah saw a Highland performance at the 2010 ADA concert and thought: “That looks really cool - I want to do it.”
The team ready for action. By SHARLENE CARDILINI EIGHT Arafura Dance Association students returned last week from an incredibly successful Highland Dancing tour in Western Australia. After six months of intense training, Alicia Wong, Codi Roath, Eliza Jovicic, Emily Tankard, Hannah Devon, Kirsten Savage, Megan Donovan and Yllana Waller set off to Kalgoorlie and Perth to observe, and compete against, some of Australia’s top level Highland dancers. First stop was Kalgoorlie where the ADA team was warmly welcomed by Kalgoorlie Dance Academy and the Eastern Goldfields contingent of Highland Dancers. With free use of KDA’s magnificent studio, students were hard at work until the Eastern Goldfields Premiership on March 24. To our delight the ADA team proved strong competition gaining 11 trophies
and 14 medals between them - an outstanding success. Special mention goes to Eliza Jovicic for earning runner up in the beginners premiership 10 years and over section. While in Kalgoorlie the team attended Highland workshops led by Queensland adjudicator Natalie Rush, and KDA principal Sharon Greatorex. The girls also attended tap, jazz and classical classes at KDA, and had great fun attending the rhythmic gym and acro classes. The team then travelled to Perth ready to compete in the Western Australian Highland Dancing Championships on April 1. The dancers had already gained so much experience and knowledge in Kalgoorlie that they had hugely surpassed expectations and outcomes of the trip both on technical and personal levels. The students again rose to the occasion by winning a combined six

trophies and 12 medals. Exceptional performances by Alicia Wong, Eliza Jovicic and Megan Donovan who, due to their success in Kalgoorlie, had to compete in a higher level division and still managed to win three trophies and five medals between them. Arafura Dance Association has not only experienced the top level of Highland dancing in Australia but has now also proven we are more than competitive with our peers. The ADA Highland team left Nhulunbuy as great dancers but have returned as a highly motivated group of great girls setting new goals to continue their growth as nationally competitive Highland dancers. Such was the interest in our dancers that Arafura Dance Association has been asked to host a Highland premiership competition at home next Easter, with interested dancers from WA and Queensland already keen to attend.
