Seven teenagers charged over spate of offences SEVEN teenagers appeared at Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court last week, charged with 35 offences relating to a spate of unlawful entries in and around Nhulunbuy during the previous week. Officer-in-Charge of Nhulunbuy Police Brendan Muldoon said six youths and one adult (18) had been arrested and charged for 16 unlawful entries in Nhulunbuy and Yirrkala between April 21 and 30. He said the teenagers were known to each other and all “hung around together.” “The charges are against seven males, aged between 15 and 18 years of age,” Snr Sgt Muldoon said. “They relate to properties including at the Yirrkala CEC School, Laynhapuy Association Office, East Arnhem Shire Council, MAF Airport Hangar Office,

Laynhapuy Aviation Office, MAF Terminal (shop), the Gove Country Golf Club, the IGA and a private residence. “The offenders were involved in allegedly stealing a number of items, including a car, three four-wheel drives, a cordless drill and drill bits, jerry cans containing fuel, fuel, cash, mobile phones, boxes of chocolates, frozen chicken rolls, soft drinks, five bottles of spirits and two cartons of beer. “Damage was done to a number of the properties, including fences being cut, windows and doors smashed and jemmied open, security mesh and grills smashed and removed, a TV smashed and padlocks cut.” Snr Sgt Muldoon said it was too early to put a dollar value on the damages and said

it would be considerable amount. The same was correct relating to goods stolen. The accused were charged and appeared in Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday and Thursday. One was remanded in custody as he was considered too great a risk of being let back into the community and sent to Don Dale Juvenile Detention Centre to appear at Darwin Court on May 8. One 15-year-old was sent to Bush Mob near Alice Springs to take part in an eight-week program. Others had their cases held over until the next court sitting on June 6. The offenders were already known to the police and two had been re-arrested by last Friday as they had already breached their bail conditions.

hospital to join them in a picnic in the hospital grounds. The Gove District Hospital has 18 midwives including some who are casuals. In a community as transient as Nhulunbuy, the midwives have a longevity which has seen two of their number delivering babies to women they had also assisted bringing into this world. Bernie Whelan and Tracy Kelly said they both arrived in 1987 and have delivered second generation babies. Others have been at Gove for over 10 years. Mrs Whelan said the birthing unit in Gove was all encompassing and had a dynamic family environment. “The fabric of the community, as a whole, is that we see the babies as they grow up because we see them and their families at social and sporting functions,” she said. Ms Kelly said there is a strong sense of community as they take the time needed to be able to support new mums. “We have a brilliant team of doctors working with us at the hospital and we all work together as a team,” she said. Vicki Elborough, who is the representative for the Australian College of Midwives at Gove, got the task of cutting the cake which had been baked by fellow midwife Dee Castelli. Many of the mums present concurred that it was great for them to be able to acknowledge the wonderful job done by the midwives and the great facility provided for new parents at Gove and District Hospital. TWO local lads have made it through to the next round of Australia’s Got Talent. Adrian Wilson and Brad Vellacott grew up together and used to play around Gove under the name ‘Expressions Of Sanity’. They moved to Perth after finishing high school to pursue musical studies, with Adrian doing music production at the WA Academy of Performing Arts, and Brad studying audio engineering at SAE. Both joined a band and got into the local scene in Perth but it wasn’t their style of music so Adrian decided to start his own solo project and write his own songs in the pop/rock genre.

Brad and a few other guys they met at University (Jarryd Price drums and Terence H’ng - keys) backed Adrian live for a while. Eventually they came to realise they had something pretty unique sounding as a group so they decided to make it into a band and ‘Beside Lights’ was born in January, 2011. Pop rockers ‘Beside Lights’ are quickly making waves in the WA music scene through their catchy pop-driven songs and engaging live performances. Despite only being a band for a short time under the new name 2011 has brought some amazing opportunities for the boys. In March the band travelled to

Toronto for their first international showcase alongside eight other Australian acts at one of the worlds largest music festivals - Canadian Music Week. This opportunity also saw the boys travel to Vancouver where they spent one week recording with legendary producer Warne Livesey (Midnight Oil, Xavier Rudd and The The). Since arriving back home the band has shared the stage with various national acts including: * The Vines; and * Flight Facilities; * Made top 10 in Australia for Nova’s ‘I Am With The Band’ competition; * Taken first place at WA’s

regional Battle Of The Bands in Bussleton; and * In November, 2011, launched their first debut self-titled EP. “Because there’s not much of a scene in WA for pop rock, I think when the opportunity came along for Australia’s Got Talent we figured it was a perfect way for the band to get our name and music out there. “And so far it’s been great,” said Adrian. “We’ve got through the first few rounds and head into the semi finals very shortly. “Semi’s are held throughout May and June so keep an eye out,” Adrain concluded.

Shame board going up in Yirrkala

Djwalpi Marika A SHAME Board is being erected in the IGA store in Yirrkala after an increase in the number of break-ins in Yirrkala. On April 30 there was a break-in at the IGA with

damages of $4000 and this was on top of a number of other break-ins around the town. The Yonglu Elders and Traditional Owners have agreed to implement a new idea to reduce the crime in the community and hopefully shame people who do the wrong thing by their own. Djawalpi Marika came up with the idea of setting up a shame board at the community store. This board will have the photos and names of people who have been involved with crime and stealing at the community. A meeting was held at the

store where everyone agreed that action needs to be taken as enough discussion has been made with no change. All who attended the meeting were in agreement with the hard stand on protecting locals and their culture. Djawalpi Marika said the implementation of the shame board is not about government intervention and strong future legislation, it’s about safety for his people. “In the old days Elders had a similar form of punishment by shame,” Mr Marika said. “We need to use what our

past Elders concept was to keep our community safe. “In the old days shaming was done by shaving people’s hair and making them do work for the community as a punishment. “We need to show real leadership and strength by senior people working together to help the families learn the importance of strong culture and respect for each other. Be strong role models. “I hope that what we are doing at Yirrkala will help teach people the right way to live their lives. We want our community

to be a safe and a respectful place to live among each other. “We have pride in our community Yirrkala and there is much history in this place. We are a strong group with many good things that have taken place by our people and have changed history for Yonglu. “It’s important that our youth retain these ways and be ready to lead for the future. “Education is important for our people and learning the right way in living with each other with honesty and respect is the only way.” Owner of the store Tim

Yolngu nations call for scrapping of the federal Strong Futures laws By MARJO HALLOWELL TRADITIONAL Owners from throughout Arnhem Land have rallied together to present a united front against the Australian Government, calling for self-determination and an end to interventionist legislation. The Yolngu Nations Assembly call is to scrap Labor’s Stronger Futures draft laws which are before the Senate and likely to pass with bipartisan support after federal parliament resumes this month. A meeting with clan and community leader representatives from Milingimbi, Ramingining, Gapuwiyak, Galiwin’ku, Yirrkala and Maningrida was held at Ramingining last week. The Assembly, a group of traditional owners representing 8000 people in West, Central and East Arnhem Land have written to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, sena-

tors and NT government calling for the Stronger Futures laws to be scrapped. The laws continue the former Howard government’s 2007 Northern Territory intervention to address violence and alcohol abuse in Aboriginal communities. The measures are widely opposed by NT Aboriginal communities who say they were not properly consulted on the government’s plans and that the laws are racist. The letter states that until the laws are discarded traditional owners will refuse “participation in land lease negotiations with the federal government and approval for any exploration licences”. “Traditional owners of prescribed community lands have been placed under extreme pressure from the federal government to grant them head leases over these communities,” Dr Djiniyini Gondarra wrote. The traditional owners want the federal and

territory governments to return to “the mindset of partnership based on self determination”. The Yolngu Nations call for an end to the NT Government’s compulsory teaching in English for the first four hours of each school day policy. “To be successful we need education with instruction in our Yolngu languages through all levels of schooling.” The draft Stronger Futures laws include a controversial program that cuts the welfare payments of parents whose children miss school and is known as the student enrolment and attendance measure (SEAM). It also imposes alcohol restrictions. Across the nation people are supporting the TO’s opposition to Stonger Futures and their supporters include former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser who said he backed the indigenous leaders’ plea for the laws to be dumped. “It is my hope that those in government will listen to the request of the Yolngu Nations people

. . . and end the interventionist policies,” he said in a statement. Former late 1970s Aboriginal affairs minister Ian Viner agrees. “It is a strong statement which I am ready to support,” he said. The laws are also opposed by the Catholic and Uniting churches and St Vincent de Paul. At a memorial concert for singer Jimmy Little musicians performed his iconic Blackfella Whitefella dedicating it to supporting the Stand for Freedon Campaign which opposes Stronger Futures. A spokeswoman for Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin defended the government’s plan. “The Gillard government has given a clear commitment to Aboriginal people in the NT to work with them over the next 10 years to overcome the unacceptable levels of disadvantage too many people still face,” she said in a statement.

UNTIL recently there has been very little research on dolphins or whales in the Northern Territory. However, since 2007, the Department of Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport has been undertaking a Coastal Dolphin Program focusing on the three different types of coastal dolphins, the Australian snubďŹ n, the Indo-PaciďŹ c humpback and the Indo-PaciďŹ c bottlenose. As the Coastal Dolphin Program has gained a public proďŹ le a further benefit has been the reportings of a typically oceangoing dolphin that appears to be a visitor to the NT coast - the false killer whale. The false killer whale is one of

the larger members of the dolphin family and, despite its world-wide distribution throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, is one of the least known of the large tropical oceanic dolphins. Adult male false killer whales can reach up to six metres in length and females to ďŹ ve metres. The common (and scientiďŹ c names) relate to the likeness in skull to the killer whale (the largest dolphin in the world and the same as the ones that were recently reported off the Bromby Islands), but the two species are not closely related. In most areas false killer whales are usually far from shore except for around the Hawaiian Islands

and it looks like the NT too as more sightings get reported. Since 2005 there have been 21 sightings of false killer whales in the NT including Melville Bay, the semi-enclosed harbours of Darwin and Port Essington at Cobourg and around Groote Eylandt. Many of the sightings have been during the wet season and it looked like the false killer whales were chasing schools of ďŹ sh. The Department of Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport are keen to receive sightings of dolphins and whales - Please report sightings to the Marine Wildwatch Hotline on 1800 453 941.

National Walk Safely to School Day is a health initiative urging all parents and carers to include exercise in their young childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daily routines. Starting healthy habits from an early age is proven to reduce obesity and related health problems. Walking is one of the best and easiest ways to exercise. And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s free. All parents and carers are asked to walk their children safely to school either all or part of the way because â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Active Kids are Healthy Kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. In addition to promoting health to young Australians, the day aims to raise awareness of pedestrian safety for children and promotes environmentally-friendly transport. In the courts . . . Teenager caught riding scooter A TEENAGER who was test riding a scooter lost his licence for six months and was fined $300 when he appeared at Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court last week. The 18-year-old pleaded guilty to medium-range drink driving. The teenager was stopped on Beagle Circuit on April 5 and registered a breath alcohol reading of 0.083gm. He took the scooter for a test ride at 11pm after he had consumed a six pack of beer. The unrepresented forklift driver said he would probably lose his job as a result. Magistrate Greg Smith said as long as he did not drive the forklift on a public road his job should not be in jeopardy and he suggested the teenager talk to his employer. He reminded him not to drive on a public road under any circumstances or the consequences would be serious.

Sentence suspended on kava A 32-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to two months’ gaol after he pleaded guilty to having a trafficable quantity of kava and his sentence was suspended for 18 months. He was also fined $400 for possessing a dangerous drug and ordered to pay $40 victim’s levy. The man was picked up at Gove Airport from a flight from Cairns on April 18. He had been reported as suspicious to Nhulunbuy Police who questioned him at the airport and he said he only had his backpack. They located his checked luggage which contained kava which he said he was going to leave by the side of the road for someone to pick up. He had a total of 16kg of kava and said he was unaware of the seriousness of bringing kava to the area. The man said he did not know about the glasses case which contained what was suspected to be meth-amphetamine. His defence lawyer said the man regularly came up here for work and wanted to get permanent work here and settle down. “If he’d known that bringing kava was serious he wouldn’t have done it,” he said. He had been promised a small amount for bring the kava with him. Magistrate Greg Smith said he hoped the man had learnt his lesson and that in the Territory bringing in trafficable quantities of kava is a significant offence.

Kava bust He was stopped on the refinery side of Melville Bay Road and recorded a reading of 0.106 at an early morning RBT. The man said he’d been drinking and had beer and scotch and had his last drink at 1am when he called a cab to get home. In the morning he felt tired but did not think he was over the limit to drive to work. The man, who represented himself, said losing his licence would cause considerable hardship as he was a sub-contracting carpenter. He said it was hard to find work without a licence and he may be forced to leave Gove to find work. Magistrate Greg Smith said the disqualification was mandatory and he hoped the man’s employer could see fit to keep him on for the six months. “It’s probably the scotch that did you in,” Mr Smith said. He was also ordered to pay a $40 levy.

Mother fined for offences A MOTHER who had her child in the car with her pleaded guilty to not having another licensed person in the car with her while she was a learner. She also pleaded guilty to driving and uninsured and unregistered vehicle. The 19-year-old was fined $180 and ordered to pay three $40 victim’s levies when she appeared in Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court last week. She was stopped on March 27 and has since obtained her licence. She said she was unaware the registration had expired on March 9.

Youth worker fined A YOUTH worker, 39, who did not realise his licence had been suspended because of an unpaid fine pleaded guilty to careless driving and driving without a licence when he appeared at Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court last week. On February 12 he was driving on Melville Bay Road from the airport and turned towards Yirrkala in front of an on-coming car. The car was hit and spun 180 degrees. The passenger of the other vehicle was taken to Gove District Hospital and later released. Lawyer for the defence said the driver of the car that was hit was known to her client and they were in discussions regarding costs of repairing damages. He was fined $400 and ordered to pay two victim’s levies of $40.

A man in his 30s was arrested at Gove Airport last weekend, April 29, for possessing a trafficable quantity of Kava. It is alleged the man flew to Cairns where he picked up 14kgs of kava before returning to Gove. He was due to appear in Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court.

Miss Rachael going to London to dance for the Queen

IT WAS no surprise for dance students at the Arafura Dance Association in Gove that their principal dance instructor has been chosen to dance before the Queen. Rachael Wallis is one of six dancers forming part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Tour along with Janet Munyarryun, from Dharlingbuy, and Ineke Wallis. also from Gove. Other team members include Sydney-based Tim Bishop, Glen Doyle and Leon Burchill. The aboriginal troupe will be performing at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant between May 10 and 13 and will be performing in front of the Queen on May 13.

Miss Rachael, as she is known to her students, said she was asked to be part of the group by her friend, Matthew Doyle. Inneke, 17, got the opportunity to be part of the tour after two other dancers had to pull out. Ms Munyarryun who was instrumental in starting the Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre (AIDT) and the Bangara Dance group is also one of the dancers. Miss Rachael said she had received a lot of support from the almost 200-strong Arafura Dance Association. “I hope this will inspire them to reach for their dreams,” she said. “I have been dancing every week

since I was two-and-a-half years old and I still love it as much now as I did then. “We will be performing recreated traditional dances from the Dharrawul region.” When she was in Sydney in April for the Australian Youth Dance Festival, she managed to get in some rehearsal with the other dancers and she left for Sydney last Thursday before flying to London early this week. Once there they will have rehearsals up until the performance at the end of the week. Following the performance she will be taking a short break before returning home.

CHARACTER development, first drafts and favourite illustrators are hot topics of lunch time conversation at Nhulunbuy Christian College after hosting best-selling children’s author Katrina Germein last week. NCC librarian Clare Woodington had worked for the last 10 months securing the award-winning author’s visit and couldn’t be more thrilled at the result. “It’s been a long time coming but it’s very exciting to finally have Katrina here,” Mrs Woodington said. “She is so inspiring and has such an infectious passion that our students from transition to year nine have been writing stories with great energy and enthusiasm all week.” Ms Germein’s popular first book ‘Big Rain Coming’ has been published around the world and remains in print more than a decade since its release. Her second book ‘Leaving’ was also written while she was teaching in the remote indigenous community of Minyerri (south-east of Katherine). Her stories have won notable book commendations from the Children’s Book Council of Australia. ‘My Dad Thinks He’s Funny’ was so popular it was instantly reprinted within a month of its launch and ‘Littledog’ was recently featured on Play School. “Katrina has such a wonderful rapport with children and her stories are so funny, Ms Woodington said. “With her teaching background she’s able to aim age appropriate writing workshops for the older students in middle school and also have fun and inspire the youngest children in transition.” Ms Germein enjoys the freedom of the writing process and hopes to share that experience with others. “Hopefully I can encourage stu-

dents to believe in, and share, their own stories and to see that everyone has their own unique ideas and tales to tell. I’d love students to realise that anyone can write and that as well as being an essential tool it can be a rewarding and fun creative outlet too,” she said. “I’m always working on something. I have a half finished young adult novel on my computer which I might finish one day but I keep putting off because picture books are what I love the most and what I keep coming back to. “My new picture book, ‘Somebody’s House’, will be published next year by Walker books Australia. It’s a lively rhyming text for preschoolers. “I received an email with some images of the completed illustrations by Anthea Stead last night. They are so vibrant and quirky. I can’t wait for the book to come out.” Ms Germein loves the open spaces of the Territory and said if her husband and three children would move here with her she’d return in a flash. “Everyone at NCC has been just so warm and welcoming. The staff have all made me feel very special and the students have been asking really thoughtful questions and sending me smiles and waves across the yard at lunch time. “It’s a lovely place to visit.” An evening story time with the younger students was a highlight. Mrs Woodington was overwhelmed by the families that turned up for the sausage sizzle and children dressed in pyjamas, clutching their

teddies. “Literacy, books and reading have always been a vital focus here especially in our beautiful new library but Katrina’s visit has given everyone, including the adults that attended the evening writing workshop, fresh inspiration and encouragement - it’s just fantastic” During her NCC hosted week-long visit Mrs Woodington encouraged other local groups to take advantage of this unique opportunity including a day visiting Nhulunbuy Primary School and a ‘meet the author’ evening for Arnhem Writers Group. “Start writing and see where it takes you. Write what’s in your heart. Don’t give up too quickly because you think your work’s not good enough. “Let yourself enjoy the writing process and allow your ideas to spill onto the page in any order. If you want to share your writing with someone later you can polish and edit it then,” she said. After attending Ms Germein’s adult writers workshop even Mrs Woodington is energised and looking forward to a new phase of creativity. “I feel that I already have five children’s picture books inside me - I can’t wait to get started writing.”

THE Territory budget handed down by Treasurer Delia Lawrie last week could hardly be described as an election budget. It is, however, a responsible budget which continues to deliver record spending across education, health and safety as well as a healthy spend on infrastructure to support families and jobs. The Treasurer during her budget speech made no apology for taking the budget further into deficit and received the support of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, NT Master Builders Association and the NT Council of Social Services. As the Treasurer stated a surplus budget could only be achieved by sacrificing jobs.

This is a direct result of downturn in retail due to cautious consumers more focused on saving than spending, and with it, a downturn in the construction sector. It is largely government funded infrastructure projects which have kept this sector afloat. Delia Lawrie will be visiting Nhulunbuy on Wednesday, May 16, to deliver the Treasurer’s budget presentation. Time and venue will be advertised and is open to anyone interested in attending. Sing Australia coming to Gove LOOSEN up those vocal chords and get ready to join a new choir forming in Gove. In 1985 Sing Australia Pty Ltd was established by Colin Slater OAM, an accomplished singer and singing teacher, to promote singing, Australian compositions and Australian artists. In June he is coming to Nhulunbuy to conduct a workshop for those interested in expressing themselves through song. Mr Slater has agreed to come to Gove on Thursday, June 21, after an invitation from Jennifer Peers and she is seeking expressions of interest from people who would be interested in attending in view of starting up a choir. Mrs Peers said Deserai Stenaway has agreed to be the conductor and accompanist. She is in the process of finding a suitable location and will advise the public once that has been secured. High among the Sing Australia’s priorities has been the encouragement of people to

sing using a unique style of teaching for large groups. Sing Australia community singing groups do not require people to audition or to attend regularly. They are singing groups that offer the opportunity to learn songs as much as they do the typical choir repertoire which requires part singing. The concept also accepts that not everyone can read music, not everyone can sing in tune, and not everyone has yet made contact with their singing voice. However, by being accepting of everyone as individuals who are all equal in their desire to sing, the concept has proven that most people acquire singing skills at least to a level where they can enjoy themselves immensely in a choral environment or simply for their own enjoyment at home. Sing Australia activities include lots of singing, lots of fun, no auditions, personal

EASC launches litter reduction program for nine communities EAST Arnhem Shire Council (EASC) president Banambi Wunungmurra and the Keep Australia Beautiful Council Northern Territory (KABC NT) launched a new $230,000 litter reduction pilot program at Liberty Square at Parliament House last week. The program is to be rolled out in all nine EASC communities over the next 12 to 18 months . Under the pilot program, EASC will partner with KABC (NT) to roll out resources to help local communities clean up, recycle and keep their communities clean into the future. The program is part of the National Bin Network (NBN) a $100 million, ﬁve-year industry

funded plan to increase recycling and reduce litter nationally, providing an effective and efﬁcient scheme that addresses all litter and packaging recycling, not just beverage containers. The NBN is fully funded by industry at no cost to Territorians. Mr Wunungmurra said: “In East Arnhem, Yolngu, Anindilyakwan and Balanda people are very proud of our communities and Homelands. So, naturally, it does sadden us at times to see litter throughout our communities and natural environment. “We want to work to be part of a solution to have cleaner and healthier communities.

“This marks the start of a great program in the Northern Territory in the hope that we can come back here in a year’s time and talk about our positive progress and boast about how more beautiful our East Arnhem communities are.” Chair of KABC (NT) Gary Swanson said the pilot provides KABC (NT), for the ﬁrst time, with adequate resources to work with local councils and community groups such as schools, stores and environment groups to reduce litter and increase recycling. “KABC (NT) is all about positively engaging the community to generate real environmental

Lara’s new best friend - ice baths A FORMER Goveite is running in this year’s Gold Coast HalfMarathon in July and asking for support. Lara Conaghan and her running partner, Aaron Broderick, will be running the half marathon on July 1. Lara and Mick Conaghan lived in Gove for nine years with their three children and absolutely loved it. “Our children Madeleiene, Campbell and Reade attended NPS for their schooling. We are very fond our Gove community and are now in Blackwater in Queensland,” Mrs Conaghan said. She said the half marathon is 21km - a distance that neither she or Aaron have even thought about running let alone actually doing. “We will take on the blisters, burning muscles and hundreds of kilometres of training runs in return for you to reach into your hearts and pockets and donate to such a wonderful charity Variety. “We are blessed to have the opportunity to push our ability to attempt such a feat. The pledge of

our run rings true to this, and that is every child deserves the same opportunities, to be the best they can be. “After a 13km run recently I have now completed over 300 km of training runs - yes, that is a looooooong way. Bubble baths are a thing of the past and my new best friend is an ice bath. “Yes tired muscles and tender knees are making themselves known but, with only eight weeks to go, we have $1920 to raise for Variety. “That is not long. Young ladies set to make their debut INTRODUCING the 15 young ladies who will be making their debut at the 2012 Gove Debutante Ball. The ladies and their partners will be introduced to the community at the ball, to be held on June 23 at the Gove Town Hall.

Preparation for the event includes learning etiquette, life skills and community values, while having fun with friends and learning how to dance. A fundraising family dance will be held prior to the ball on Saturday, May 12, at the Town Hall.

Dhimurru rangers with their completed work. STUDENTS getting their hands dirty is all par for the course for those studying conservation and land management. Eight rangers at Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation are studying for a Certificate II through the Batchelor Institute. Six of the students were at East Woody on Friday planting trees, shrubs and vines a as part of re-vegetation works in an attempt to prevent further erosion

of the foreshore. As well as the planting they also installed a watering system to help the plants during the upcoming dry season. Conservation lecturer Cheryl O’Dwyer said the students had erected signs to advise people to of the work that was being done. “They have collected and grown local seeds which they have now planted as seedlings.

“The ground has also been seeded and will also benefit from the irrigation system that has been installed. “Vines have also been planted to help stabilise the banks which suffered through the storms late last year.” Helen Clark is also a lecturer teaching the students English. Ms Clark also assisted with the measuring and mapping of the site before planting.

Spectacular start to netball season By GOVE NETBALL ASSOCIATION WEDNESDAY night, May 2, saw action a-plenty down at the Gove netball courts with the first round of the 2012 season kicking off in spectacular style. There were the usual first game jitters with bibs retrieved from the dim back corners of the cupboards and uniforms dusted off ready for another season. Old friends were re-united and past rivalries re-ignited which resulted in some fabulous game play and fantastic sportsmanship. There was also some action from the fresh, new members of Gove Netball Association who have welcomed in the new season with some great games early on. The stage has been well and truly set for a fabulous year of netball ahead. Gove Netball Association has welcomed two new Yolngu teams to the courts with Yirrkala and Miwatj generously sponsored by Anglicare and Miwatj. The ladies taking care of these teams have been dedicated in their encouragement of the young players and the association is hoping the girls enjoy their year in the competition. Along with these two junior-aged teams, another young talented group of girls, Hot Shots, have stepped up to the court. The objective of exposing the younger girls to a higher level of competition is to develop their skills and allow the girls an opportunity to play together competitively

each week. This will not only increase their capacity to play better netball, but ready them for the NT Link Championships which will be held in Darwin later in the year. In the A group competition spectators were treated to an extraordinary display of netball especially considering many players had not been on the court for several months. The first game saw YBE Warriors take on Illusions, 2011 premiers. YBE Warriors have suffered through the loss of several key players but have certainly stepped up to the plate in the A group. They gave Illusions a run for their money and with continued training will be the dark horses of the competition as the season progresses. The final score certainly did not reflect the level of skill displayed on the court. Natasha Stokes should be highly commended on the time spent coaching the ladies and her vocal encouragement courtside at the game. The second A group competition between Big Mammas and Arafura Devils was a nail biter with both teams at times displaying fast court action and great skills. The heavens opened in the first quarter, but everyone played on, an indication of how keen the players were to get back onto the court. Big Mamas led the game right up until the final quarter when Devils dug deep to pull them back and the last few pressure goals just

pulled them ahead at the full time whistle. The committee is still accepting nominations from individual players looking for a team to play with. If you are keen to get involved in netball, please email gove.netball@bigpond.com and the association will endeavor to assist you in finding a team at your level to play with. Several new umpires also debuted their talents at the first round of competition. This is a difficult and often under valued task. Gove Netball appreciates the efforts of their talented pool of umpires, as without umpires the competition wouldn’t exist. Junior netball (five to16-year-olds) has not been so lucky with the weather the past two weeks and has been unable to commence the season. TWO athletes from Arnhem Land will be joining his year’s Indigenous Marathon Project under the guidance of Rob de Castella J us tin G aykaman gu, fr om Ramingining, and Grace Eather, from Maningrida, were among 130 athletes who applied for the 12 positions for Indigenous runners to be part of the IMP 2012 New York City Marathon squad. Six of the 12 runners selected are from remote communities. Under the guidance of the former Australian of the Year and world champion marathon runner Rob de Castella, the six male and six female athletes, ranging from Newcastle to the remote East Arnhem community of Ramingining almost 4000km apart, will be put through their paces at a number of intensive training camps leading them a step closer to completing the world’s most-famous foot race.

PREDICTING the weather can be fraught with challenges but there will be thunder in Gove on May 23 and 24 - NT Thunder AFL that is. Gove Operations Pacific Aluminium is bringing six NT Thunder players to town and they will be conducting clinics at the schools. On Wednesday they will be visiting the Nhulunbuy primary and high schools during the day and will also have a run with the Old Codgers team at Hindle Oval at 5pm.

On Thursday morning they will tour the town and in the afternoon they will be visiting the Clontarf Foundation in Yirrkala where they will also host football clinics and give motivational talks to children from a number of communities. At 2.45pm there will be a football game at Yirrkala oval and then at 4.30pm the players will visit the youngsters playing Auskick at the primary school oval.

Last race in John Bedwell Series

By NEAL (NOTCH) BAULCH THE last race of the John Bedwell Bluewater series was held on of April 22 and the afternoon was presented with a stronger breeze than the predicted five knots and beautiful blue skies. The number of boats that signed on was down slightly as there were some key sailors out of town. This was balanced up with an intrepid entrant by the name of Dale. His chosen craft for the day was a wind-surfer, the likes the Gove Boat Club had not seen used before, as a vessel to

traverse the chosen course. No one knew where the hell he was going to put his esky. He did a magnanimous job completing the six nautical mile long course, and without having a handicap, was given honorary first place for his efforts amid the cheering of the members and fellow competitors of the club who witnessed the scene. Four other familiar boats took part, Snappy Tom, Waitere, Magic and Sans Souci with another large contingency of crew people who got to enjoy the afternoon on the water. Magic led the way, al-

beit heading off past one of the marks and having to turn around and come back, but still managed to make it first across the line. Sans Souci came across second, followed by Snappy Tom and then Waitere. Placings on handicap were Snappy Tom, Waitere, Sans Souci and Magic. So with around a threemonth gap until the start of the next series we will attempt to fill the time with some individual events. If anyone has any ideas please get in contact with us.
