Mud slung over track damage 4WD instructor claims permission granted and no damage done By MARJO HALLOWELL

THE Nhulunbuy Motorcycle Club was disheartened when 4WD drivers caused damage at the local motocross track last Thursday. The club’s members have spent many hours ensuring the track was safe for its riders and were very annoyed last Thursday when a 4WD driving course used their track. Club president Tony Foster said he was appalled at the thoughtlessness of whoever conducted the course without any apparent thought for the damage they were causing. He said deep ruts were worn into newly maintained jumps making them unsafe for motorbike use. “I am extremely dissappointed and annoyed that anyone would do this. “There are signs all around the track telling people new work had just been completed and riders should take care when riding over the new work so I just can’t believe 4WD drivers would think they could use the track. “Many people have sacrificed a lot of family time to come out here to make the track safe and now this happens. “We had an event planned for next Sunday and all had to front up again to repair the damage caused by the 4WDs. “If we see anyone in a 4WD there again we will immediately call the police.” There was some confusion as to who had been holding the course and The Department of Health said they had staff on a course on Thursday. A spokeswoman for the Department said the course had nothing to do with them as they had just booked staff onto the SMART course.

Garry Pendlebury from SMART (Skilled Motorvehicle And Rider Training) said he refuted that any damage had been done. Mr Pendlebury said they had been using the course for about 10 years and had gotten permission from the club at that time. “Since then we have held three to five courses every year with between 50 and 100 drivers and this is the first time there has been a problem,” he said. “I will be back in the area in June and will be contacting the motorcycle club to resolve any issues.” A lack of communication was apparent as he believed the permission was still in place as no one had told him otherwise. He said they do courses all over the Territory and are very careful that they have the relevant permissions. The staff member conducting the course said the course had not been damaged and Mr Pendlebury said over the years they had been caretaking the track as they had removed wrecked cars. He said he could not see how a 4WD on a two hour course could cause any damage other than normal wear and tear that is associated with motocross. Local Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said she had seen a short video which included two white vehicles on the track. “Knowing how hard the club, led by Tony, have worked to re-establish the track and facilities I can’t for the life of me fathom why individuals would think it’s OK to use a track designed for motorbikes,” Mrs Walker said. The next race is on Sunday as members and others spent last weekend rectifying the damage caused.

THOSE going for an early morning walk last Monday (April 16) were a little surprised to see two water buffaloes also out for a morning stroll. The two bulls were seen walking along Singing Rocks Road and police were called in the early hours of April 16. The local Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited animal ranger was seen herding them out of harms way into the bush. Executive officer at Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation Steve Roeger said they had received a number of reports of sightings

along Matthew Flinders Way around the area of the Child Care Centre in the preceeding week but had not been able to find them. “A number of signs including tracks and poo have been located along Matthew Flinders Way in the bush. “We believe they are two bulls and warn residents to be wary of them. Last Monday we received a call that they were seen on Singing Rocks Road at about 5.30am,” Mr Roeger said. “Protocals have since been discussed with a number of agencies and the police are the

first point of contact. They have the ability to manage traffic access, if necessary, and they will call Dhimurru to assist. “Buffaloes in town are potentially very dangerous and people should not take sightings in town lightly. “Traditionally we have reports as the dry comes to a close so at this time of year it is unusual to see them in town. We often have sightings around the area of the golf club. “I am concerned people will take unauthorised action. Under no circumstances should anyone go and hunt them in or around town. “Dhimurru does not authorise hunting of any kind within their area and it is illegal to hunt in or near built up areas. “People who try to shoot buffaloes put not only themselves in danger but also the public with stray bullets and the possibility of wounding, rather than killing, the animal. Wounded buffalo are a much higher risk,” he said. He warned people that if they saw a buffalo either to make a noise so as not to surprise them or just move out of the location and contact police. “You would probably smell them before you see them,” he said. “People need to be cautious around them. They are wild, unpredictable and potentially very dangerous. They are very fast and very clever.” Nhulunbuy Police said if there were any concerns over safety issues they should be called and they would liase with Dhimurru. Buffaloes have been known to kill people in town. People seeing buffalo in the streets should call police on 000 or Dhimurru - after hours number 0408 512 589.

THE name that had become synonymous with the Nhulunbuy RSPCA has left town. Bev Goodchild left last Tuesday night and is heading to Mozambique with her husband, Martin. When Bev moved here three and a half years ago and it took about a week before she volunteered with the RSPCA. The rest is history. She built up the local organisation to what it is today. The RSPCA rehomes and fosters animals in search of a loving family. They now have permanent facilities at the pound and are working towards additional improvements. Bev said she wanted to thank everyone in Gove for their support over the years. “The RSPCA has now become a solid organisation within the community and there are a number of very dedicated volunteers,” she said. “I leave it in their capable hands and know they will build on what already exists.” The RSPCA has a number of kennels where they can house cats and dogs waiting to find their new owners and they are always on the look out for additional volunteers. Bev and Martin will be heading to Mozambique where Martin will take on the role of operations manager at the coal mine which is in

Bev and Martin Goodchild as they head out of Gove last Tuesday night. its initial stages of construction. “This will be the first time I have worked in the coal industry and I applied through Rio.” Martin has been at Gove Operations for the last three and a half years and said this move was to further his career. One of his main challenges will be to learn the local language, Portuguese. Earlier this year the Gove Operations general manager Julio Costa, took up the role as general manager at the Rio Tinto Energy Mozambique coal mine.

Martin said he would again be working with Julio and is looking forward to the challenge of working in a foreign country. He will be operations manager at the operation which is in the set up stage of development. The couple were heading to a wedding in Perth and Bev would spend a couple of months sorting things out before the big move. Martin is heading over in a couple of weeks. They both agreed they had met and worked with some amazing people while in Gove and would miss them all very much.

Woohoo! man celebrates big win THE right numbers dropped for one lucky punter in Gove last week as he took out part of the major prize in the TattsLotto draw. The local Nhulunbuy man, who did not wish to be identified, is celebrating after discovering he won a share of the division one prize pool worth $485,913.22 in Saturday’s TattsLotto draw. The man in his forties is a regular TattsLotto player and was very pleased when he received the phone call from Tatts he’d been dreaming of. “I’ve only got one thing to say about it - woohoo!” he said. The shift-worker added that he marked the occasion by having a few beers to celebrate and will use the money to set himself up for the future. The man purchased his winning ticket from Nhulunbuy Newsagency. Store manager Lauren Williams said she was very

happy to hear a local had won. “We were totally surprised when we discovered we’d sold a winner,” Ms Williams said. “It’s excellent for the community and we’re expecting to see a few more customers getting involved this weekend.” There were nine division one winners nationally in TattsLotto draw 3207 on Saturday, April 14, with four winners in Victoria, and one each in Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory. The winning numbers were 18, 25, 43, 13, 8 and 7 with supplementary numbers 17 and 4. Tatts public relations executive Zoe Knobel said Saturday TattsLotto draws were a cause for more celebration around the country. “Buy a ticket from your local Tatts outlet today,” she said.

EASC wins award for reconciliation plan

The Reconciliation Working party - EASC Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group at the at the Official Launch of the RAP with Richard Bandilil. L-R Keith Hansen, Kathy Wright, Richard Bandilil, Banambi Wunungmurra, Barayuwa Mununggurr, Ronnie Garrawurra and Kaye Thurlow. Absent Djapirri Mununggirritj. THE East Arnhem Shire Council was a winner at the 2012 National Awards for Local Government with Many Voices - One Journey. They were the winner in the Promoting Reconciliation - small council (under 15,000 rateable properties). A spokesperson for EASC said the Award was for implementing the NT’s first standalone Reconciliation Action Plan.

“We are particularly proud of this as a lot of work was done by our working group to make this happen,” she said. Federal Minister for Local Government Simon Crean announced the winners last week. The 27 category winners were judged by independent judging panels and include 11 winners from small councils with fewer than

15,000 rateable properties. “I congratulate each of this year’s category winners on their success,” Mr Crean said. “The quality of the 2012 entries has been extremely high and has showcased the vast array of creative and innovative projects our local councils are rolling out all around Australia. “The National Awards for Local Government are designed to recognise and reward local

councils for their important work in supporting their local communities.” Reconciliation Australia congratulated the East Arnhem Shire Council. Reconciliation Australia CEO Leah Armstrong said the awards are a great way of recognising the important work that happens in regional areas. “The advancement of reconciliation in this country relies on the work done by local organisations and councils,” she said. “We know there are a lot of small grassroots and community based organisations doing some fantastic work to create better relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians-so it’s great to see them being recognised.” The promoting reconciliation category in the National Awards for Local Government acknowledges initiatives that strengthen reconciliation through mutual recognition, respect and participation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. The EASC was the first of the new local government shires in the Northern Territory to develop a RAP which Reconciliation Australia was proud to endorse in October, 2011. “The East Arnhem Shire Council is leading the way in local government leadership by implanting reforms and improving accountability to its communities,” Ms Armstrong said. “We know the council is passionate about reconciliation because it has built reconciliation into its core foundation and future business practices. “By focusing on respect and relationships based on mutual understanding the council will be able to create more sustainable opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in the Northern Territory.”

More staff needed: Report on youth suicide in NT SPECIALIST police, youth workers and mental health staff are needed in at-risk areas to help stem the high rate of young people killing themselves in the Northern Territory. The report stated accommodation and mental health facilities were needed for young people at risk of suicide and those with severe substance abuse or mental health issues in Nhulunbuy an other NT centres. The Select Committee on Youth Suicides in the NT tabled its 215-page report in the NT parliament last month and it said the rate of youth

suicide in the Northern Territory was 3.5 times higher than the national average with Aborigines accounting for 75 per cent of all child suicides between 2007 and 2011. Among its 23 recommendations the committee said NT Police should assign youth engagement police officers to all growth towns and remote communities where there were high levels of youth offending, substance abuse and family or community violence. The report said all shires throughout the NT should have

youth development and community development officer positions and hospital accident and emergency departments should maintain at least one person with mental health training to conduct suicide risk assessments at all times Committee chair Marion Scrymgour said it did not make sense to hear that there are too many service providers in places where some people cannot access services and the report recommended a new NT Suicide Prevention Coordination Committee be set up to ensure

services are targeted where they are needed. It did also not make sense to hear of successful and vital programs closing or losing staff because a grant program has ceased or changed its priorities. It was urgent that the NT and federal governments provide extensive and effective training to existing staff in relation to mental health assessments and counselling services in regional, rural and remote services. Frontline staff required to respond to those grieving after a suicide

should all be provided with qualified grief counselling. The report also outlined concerns about social networking and called on the Department of Education to review its anti-bullying policy to include cyber bullying. “Too many of our young people are falling through the gaps and not getting the help they need,” Ms Scrymgour said. Readers seeking support and information about suicide prevention can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Ghost Nets Australia, a Queensland organisation, sent out Cecile Williams and Thisbe Purich to teach the joy and creative adventure of using all the net and rope that

washes up on the beaches. This net kills a lot of marine life so its better to collect it so it doesn’t wash out to sea again. Thisbe also brought along the Gunga pandanus weavers Joy Bulkanhawuy, Laurie Baymarawanga and Valerie Dhamarantji from Darwin who have family here to also learn so that they can become teachers later on. With a bag full of some net cutters and string they visited and did workshops at Wallaby Beach (Birritjimi) under the lovely shady banyan tree. Here the women wove baskets and made colourful strong net bags while all the children walked the whole beach treasure hunting any scrap of rope or net they could find to make dolls. The families at Wallaby Beach gave a very warm welcome to the Gunga ladies cooking up a big feed of three turtles, oysters, fresh fish most days and mussels. What more could you ask for except a box of bananas from the banana farm. Next the Gunga ladies, having learnt about the net, gave a talk and presentation of the made work at the Yirrkala school and at the Dhimurru ranger station. Finally everybody gave a small workshop on the Laynhabuy veranda for the Yiralka rangers who couldn’t work quickly enough. The Gunga weavers, Thisbe and Cecile say thank you for everybody who helped them and they hope to return in the late dry season. For more information visit www. ghostnets.com.au

Jabiru spotted at East Woody SPOTTED at East Woody on Thursday morning, April 12, was a Jabiru going for a morning stroll. Australia’s largest wetland bird is the only species of Australian stork and is also called the black-necked stork or jabiru stork. It is 1.2m tall thanks mainly to its long legs and has a wing span longer than two metres. It has a heavy 30cm long black bill and black and white body with a green-blue neck and head. Jabiru bird (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus) is found in waterways like wetlands, swamps, floodplains and mudflats in northern and eastern Australia. It feeds on large insects, crustaceans, molluscs, fish, especially eel, and reptiles like water pythons. He was unperturbed by the photographer on the other side of the creek and just kept walking along the beach feeding.

Careflight to the rescue USiNG a combination of its helicopter and aeroplanes, CareFlight aeromedical teams transferred two ill women from isolated locations to hospital in Darwin last monday. Because the locations were isolated from road access late in the wet season the aviation combination was the only way to quickly get medical assistance to the women. In the first case Darwin’s CareFlight helicopter flew to a woman at Manmoyi community in Arnhem Land. The flight nurse used the helicopter to fly the woman to Jabiru where she was transferred to one of the aeromedical King Air turbo-prop aircraft for the flight which brought the woman to Royal Darwin hospital in a stable condition. The helicopter then flew to a wilderness lodge near the East Alligator River which has no road access where a guest had become seriously unwell. The flight nurse initiated stabilisation until a CareFlight doctor landed at the resort airstrip aboard one of the King Air aircraft and flew the woman back to Royal Darwin Hospital where she arrived at about 6pm. A national aeromedical charity CareFlight nurses and doctors use King Air aircraft supported by its dedicated rescue-medical BK-117 helicopters to transport 3000 patients annually across the NT’s Top end. The first mission - the handover at Jabiru.

Drunks a concern SeNiOr Sergeant Brendan muldoon said he was concerned over the recent increase of people being taken into custody overnight for their protection because they were too drunk to look after themselves. Snr Sgt muldoon said he was concerned permit holders were buying alcohol for non permit holders. “Not only do they risk losing their permits they also risk being taken to court,” he said. “There is a reason some people do not have a permit and people should be more mindful of what they are doing when they give them access to alcohol. “Abuse of alcohol and other drugs is a major concern in this area and has a significant impact on the community.” Snr Sgt muldoon said domestic violence incidents were heightened by alcohol abuse.

Funding available for national conference RURAL women with breast cancer and health professionals have just over two weeks to apply for ďŹ nancial support to attend Strength to Strength: Breast Cancer Network Australia’s National Conference 2012. Financial support is available for a limited number of women and health professionals from rural areas to attend the national conference as part of the Supporting Women in Support will cover the cost of travel, accommodation and registration. Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is hosting the two-day national conference in Sydney for women with breast cancer and health professionals. The conference will be held on October 25 and 26 and is part of the Sydney International Breast Cancer Congress (SIBCC). It will be the ďŹ rst time in Australia that health professionals, researchers and women with breast cancer will come together in one location to listen, learn and debate the key issues in breast cancer. Maxine Morand, breast cancer survivor and BCNA CEO said the federal Government’s funding meant women in rural Australia would not miss out on the opportunity to attend the conference. “We want to ensure rural women and health professionals get the opportunity to attend this important event and with the assistance of a federal government grant we are able to sponsor up to 100 rural women to join an audience of around 800 women with breast cancer and health professionals in Sydney,â€? Ms Morand said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for rural Australian women with breast cancer to hear world-leading authorities speak on breast cancer treatment and care, current research and other areas of interest.â€? Financial support will cover: registration fee (conference and social event), travel to the conference (airfare, train, bus), accommodation (including breakfast) for two nights accommodation with an exception for those unable to travel home Friday evening after the event. The two-day conference has an exciting program comprising seven sessions along with opportunities to network and socialise. Sessions will cover topics such as: personalised medicine and new directions in treatment; managing relationships with partners, family and friends; dealing with menopausal symptoms; sexual wellbeing and managing fear and anxiety The ďŹ nal session will be combined with the main SIBCC stream titled ‘Patient centred care: are we there yet?’ and attendees from SIBCC will be invited to attend. Weed under control First meeting for newly elected Councillors AN aquatic weed recently discovered by Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation Rangers is currently under management. Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport (NRETAS) regional weed officer Chris Collins said the recent outbreak of water mimosa (Neptunia plena) at the town lagoon in Nhulunbuy could have had severe environmental impacts if not responded to quickly but still poses a threat. “Water mimosa has the potential to restrict water quality and flow as well as having an adverse impact on biodiversity, lifestyle and culture,” Mr Collins said. “This invasive weed is known to establish and grow rapidly in freshwater environments taking root in shallow areas or forming vast floating rafts across water bodies. “If water mimosa were to spread into other suitable freshwater environments, including billabongs, significant impacts to recreational fishing would be likely. “We are appreciative, as I’m sure the residents of Nhulunbuy are, that the Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation Rangers were able to notify Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited (who manage the lagoon) and NRETAS Weed Management Branch as soon as they did which has helped bring this water mimosa outbreak under control. “The quick management response by the Corporation and their contractors, Arnhem Pest Control, has helped contain the spread of this invasive weed which may now lead to eradication of this outbreak. “However, I still ask Nhulunbuy residents to be vigilant following this recent outbreak and to call us on 8999 4567 if they notice any suspect aquatic plants in and around the town.” Water mimosa has only been found once before at Virginia in the Northern Territory in the early 2000’s and is still under management (monitoring program). Water mimosa should not be confused with mimosa (Mimosa pigra); a thorny shrub which has already significantly impacted on the Northern Territory’s wetlands.

Director of East Arnhem trading Pty Ltd Tim Broadbent said the new shelving brings it up to a high standard and in line with the health departments requirements. “Thanks to my team for helping out last week and we managed to have some shelving left which we have given to the school,” he said.

“Two projects on the board for Baniyala at the moment are the installation of a 12,000 litre fuel bunker with smart card access allowing locals access to fuel 24 hours a day. We hope to have this up and running by mid June. “The other project again thanks to FACHSIA is to set up a 20 foot takeaway container which will employ two locals and sell roasted hot chooks, cooked meals, fresh cut sandwiches and a coffee bar. We will have this in place by July at the front of the shop with a sitting area in between both.”

for the next four years to feed us into better and a more prosperous council. “The Council is only four years old, and it’s just a baby, growing to become an adult. It’s not an easy road. “We have good staff within our communities and I am looking forward to working side by side, and hand in hand with the new Council and staff to face the big challenges ahead.” East Arnhem Shire Council has welcomed the election of Councillor Mavis Danganbarr as deputy president. ‘Ridiculous’ flight costs for TOs trying to get home I WAS very disappointed and confused today (April 17) after trying to assist the T/O from Marrinatja with flights back to his homeland. Yesterday he paid $1540 for a charter with MAF and was trying to return to the terminal by 3pm. When they rang the pilot at 3pm they were informed the

flight had already left for Lake Evella and they would need to fly this morning but at an extra cost of $800. So in total the trip for the one day has cost them $2340. When I questioned them on this I was given many reasons why but none of them seem reasonable at all to me. Especially if the plane was

back here in Nhulunbuy and already had another flight to Lake Evella anyway. These people do not have vast sums of money and were trying to get food to take back before they were due to leave. I would appreciate a fair answer that makes sense as to why the extra cost.

I was under the impression that MAF would have been more reasonable than what they have been and wonder how many times this happens. We all know how far you could get with $2340 if you wanted to fly overseas. Tim Broadbent Nhulunbuy

by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER WHILE the Gove mining operations transition to Pacific Aluminium and it is no secret that the company is seeking cost efficiencies the threat of removal of the Federal diesel fuel rebate

for on-site use of diesel and like fuels in mines has the potential to negatively affect mining operations here. At the recent Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting Chief Minister Paul Henderson raised concerns about the potential removal of the diesel fuel rebate with Prime Minister Julia Gillard. The Chief Minister has subsequently written a letter to the Prime Minister expressing his concerns and detailing the adverse ramifications this decision would have on the viability of mining in the Territory and

especially at Gove where heavy fuel oil is used to generate electricity. The motivation for the removal of the rebate is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the Territory Government is therefore working with Pacific Aluminium to facilitate the securing of gas to enable the conversion of power generation at the refinery from oil to gas. I am committed to supporting local industry and the region’s largest employer and will continue to work with the Chief Minister and the Territory Government to do what it takes to ensure the

A milestone reached in Classical musicians please apply recording Australia’s 30 millionth species THE Atlas of Living Australia added its 30 millionth species occurrence record last month making it the largest collection of rich information on Australia’s plants, animals and fungi. The Atlas, a collaboration between all Australian museums, herbaria and biological collections, CSIRO, Adelaide and Southern Cross Universities and the Commonwealth Government, reached this milestone when over half a million records from Birdlife Australia were incorporated. Some of these records come from the diaries of 17th century Dutch navigators such as the record for a Brush Bronzewing dated 1629. “The Atlas is a unique national repository for rich data on all Australian life forms - from bacteria to kangaroos, land-based to marine, native and non-native,” said Dr John La Salle, director of the Atlas of Living Australia. “Together with information about the whole range of Australian species, the Atlas contains many different types of data including photos, distribution, maps and mapping tools, DNA sequences, scientific and common names, conservation status, identification keys and heritage literature.” The Atlas provides access to over 350 large and small datasets, from the NSW Government’s Atlas of Wildlife to the records of a community group who look after a local creek. Dr John Hooper from the Queensland Museum noted that this is a substantial milestone for the Atlas community providing value to anyone who would like to know more about the living world, identify species or understand their distribution. One of the applications in the Atlas, ‘Explore Your Area’, allows you to enter an address or location to find the recorded species nearby. At the click of a button you can create a list and map of species that have been found in your local area and photos of most of them. “Local and traditional knowledge is invaluable for tracking where Australian animals and plants are distributed across the country. Even if a plant or animal is common in your area, it may never have been officially recorded there, only because no-one has conducted a technical survey of what’s there. If the species list is incomplete, it only takes a few minutes to add your own sightings and photos of Australian species,” said Dr John La Salle.

CROSSWORD No. 95

SUDOKU No. 95

Your Lucky

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) Time spent helping out a friend at work may take up more of your energy than you expect. Your input will not go unnoticed, however. Romance. Don’t allow yourself to be ruled by your emotions. You need to make an important decision and must wait until you are more relaxed.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Once you have started a new project nobody will be able to stop you! Your momentum will help you to push through a barrier which has stopped other people in their tracks. Romance. Your partner may find it hard to cope with all your excess energy! A powerful aspect to Mars later in the week could make you a little tense: do your best to use your excess energy constructively.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A few negative comments this week may sap your confidence for a while. You need to take the remarks in context, however, and not overreact. Romance. A person whom you have known for some time may still be interested in you. They will do their best to pretend not to be interested, but their actions will give them away.

FOR KIDS

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Be careful that problems at work don’t spill over into your home-life. So long as you try hard to be patient, everything will be resolved. Romance. You may need a little extra emotional support from your partner at the moment. Communications between you will be especially strong, but be careful not to be too demanding.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Activities which don’t need much money will give you a chance to get back on your feet financially. Some recent extravagances have taken their toll. Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will give your love-life a push in the right direction. A romantic get-together this week will put your relationship onto much firmer ground after a recent misunderstanding.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 95

A surprise move later in the week may leave you wondering what is going on. Talk to a person whom you can trust – your other colleagues may not be so quick to tell you everything. Romance. A power-struggle between you and your partner will not help either of you. Do your best to settle a recent dispute in a way which satisfies both sides.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may find it difficult to tolerate people who don’t know what they are doing. You won’t appreciate having to clear up a mess caused by someone else. Romance. If you are able to relax properly this will be an excellent week for both of you. Be especially careful not to get into arguments, especially ones involving money. You won’t be in a mood for compromise at the moment!

A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) At times this week you will need to spend more time by yourself. You have a lot of work to get through and won’t be happy if you are constantly interrupted. Romance. A new relationship may pick up speed faster than you expect. Very soon you will have to make a decision about how quickly you want to get involved with this person.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A kind word will go a– long way. Your enthuFor all your printing needs www.lotsa.com.au siasm and energy will be appreciated by the people around you; however you must be sympathetic to people who are not so dynamic. Romance. A favourable aspect to Neptune this week will improve your powers of intuition, just when you most need them!

MUDDY RIVER

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Your ability to spot a financial opportunity will help to bring in some money just when you need it most. Make sure you don’t take any more risks than you have to, however. Romance. Time spent with someone whom you hardly know could prove interesting. This person may be much keener on you than you realised. Don’t expect any dramatic developments for the time being, however.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

To repeat what others have said requires education. To challenge it requires brains.

– Mary Pettibone Poole

A favourable aspect to Jupiter will help to bring a little more luck into your life over the next few days. Don’t miss an opportunity just because a friend tries to put you off. Romance. Your self-confidence will be especially high at the moment. You may need to be the one who takes the initiative in a new relationship.

SOLUTIONS No. 95

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A favourable aspect to Jupiter will give you the confidence you need to sort out a long-standing problem. You need to deal head-on with an issue which you have been trying to avoid. Romance. Your partner will appreciate a few words of encouragement. You might not realise how much they value your support.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

A difficult aspect to Saturn could make you quite negative at times. You may feel that there is no light at the end of the tunnel! A chance event later in the week will turn things around faster than you expect. Romance. Your partner may not be telling you everything that you need to know. Don’t assume the worst – but do try to find out everything!

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Don’t boss people around, even if you feel that they are being obstructive. A difficult aspect to Mars could make you quite tense at times, and there is a risk that you could fly off the handle if you get frustrated. Romance. This promises to be an exciting week. A person whom you meet through a social activity will be very much on your mind.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A frightening dream may leave you wondering what is going to come next. The imagery in the dream will not be totally negative, however: the ultimate message is that you will get what you are looking for, so long as you are prepared to keep trying. Romance. Your partner may have different priorities from you at the moment. A compromise will be easy, so long as you are both flexible.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A move to a different job may not solve all your problems. Before you consider such a drastic step, you should think hard about the advantages of your present work. Romance. Your emotional energy is going to waste at the moment. Find a more constructive way to channel your energy otherwise you will feel drained when you need it the most.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Your work will be getting you down at the moment. You may even be thinking about looking for a new job. This is not the best time for a major change, however, and you must be cautious about making a move which you might regret later. Romance. Communications with your partner are likely to be very healthy at the moment. A trip away from home later in the week will go especially well.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) This week it is important to have the utmost patience. Don’t waste time looking for something which you have lost: it will turn up when the time is right. Romance. You will soon know the answer to an important question which has been on your mind over the past few days. Don’t push for an answer though.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Chores will appear out of nowhere this week! Unfortunately there is a lot more to be done than meets the eye. Romance. A friend who wants to get to know your partner could stir up jealousies, possibly without realising it. There will be no need to worry.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Don’t waste time on a project which is unlikely to actually lead anywhere. You have a lot of more important things to deal with and don’t need to chase red herrings. Romance. A show of affection will change the way you feel about a friend who has been close to you in the past.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A friend who has given you some confidential information won’t want you to spread it around. You may not realise quite how important this secret is to them. Romance. Don’t give in to an emotional outburst that you will feel several times this week. Your partner may be a little on-edge at the moment.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A dream later in the week will surprise you – until you work out what it is about. The message in the dream won’t be obvious at first, and you will need to think hard about the associations which it conjures up. Romance. Your partner will be very interested in one of your new friends. It may be difficult to pull them apart!

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) Advice from friends who are negative won’t help you. You don’t want your positive energy to be suffocated by people who have much less initiative themselves. Romance. A romantic offer should be taken up. The person concerned will be serious - but you won’t get a second chance.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Don’t retreat from a problem which has been worrying you recently. You need to drill down until you get the solution. A friend who has been through a similar experience will be able to give you some useful advice. Romance. A social gaffe made by one of your friends could prove embarrassing. You will soon be able to have a good laugh, however.

Nhulunbuy High takes home the Shangri-La Cup By SEAN O’CONNOR THE third annual TAS Northern Sevens Rugby Tournament was held on Friday, April 13, at Barlow Park and 20 teams from seven schools competed including two teams from Nhulunbuy High School. The Shangri-La Cup was presented Nhulunbuy High School as the overall winning school for 2012 based on an aggregate of team results. In the finals in the U16 division, Nhulunbuy High School defeated William Ross SHS for the U16 Cairns Old Crocs Shield. In the U18 All Lending and Finance grand final were defeated by Nhulunbuy High School defeated St Augustine’s. The East Arnhem Rugby Union (EARU) club had marshaled its forces and headed off to Cairns to defend its schools Rugby 7s U18s title of 2011. The boys got to Cairns on Thursday morning, after some fun getting them all together. Trinity Anglican School (TAS) generously provided a bus to get the troops to our accommodation at the Shangri-La hotel on the Esplande (very comfortable). The boys were settled in and their time was their own until our planned training session. Unfortunately it rained heavily all through the day. The boys arrived the next day at Barlow Park and we all prepared for the tough encounters that we expected to come from the other schools. Each age group had five teams in their pool. We knew our boys would all have to play out of our skins to get to the finals. U18s started with a nil all draw, which is highly unusual for a Rugby 7s match. They then lost the next

match, due to a controversial ‘red card’ incident. Due to injuries the boys were left with eight players to finish the tournament and they did not let any of their fans or themselves down. They finished on top of their age group and won the final. Best on the field was Robert Greenwood and he was on fire every minute he was out there. We thank his parents ( Munch and Crunch) as major sponsors of the EARU. Their support has gone a long way toward helping our teams go a long way in their various adventures. The U16s were a force to be reckoned with as they, as a group, where committed to ensuring the North Queensland schools knew what we, as a school club, were here for. Jye Snowden was the stand out player of the age group but he was well supported by his brothers in arms who collectively were undefeated and easily won the tournament. EARU were also successful in winning the overall schools trophy and this will be proudly displayed with the other shields at Nhulunbuy High School. The coaches, Sean O’Connor (U18s), Colin Snowden (U16s) and Standford Forbes (U16/18s) with the help of supporters like Ali Snowden, Jon Regan, Beta Sakura, Peter Mallard and Troy Pickett are all so proud of these boys and grateful for their collective efforts. We would also like to make mention of our great hydro-technicians in Tom Pearce, Richard Ofa and Matt Hancock as they did a great job. We look forward to the EARU boys next trip, which is to Darwin on May 5 and 6, for the TIO Championships at the Marrara complex. Please come and support your Rugby Union club whenever you see an opportunity.

Pony Express attracts 14 riders STORY AND PHOTOS BY TAN FOSTER The Nhulunbuy Motorcycle Club held a great round at the Pony express event recently. There were 14 riders doing battle out the 4.2km track set out by the club which involved riding the course for a non-stop period of two hours. It proved to be a real challenge for most riders with one or two connecting with the dirt. Overall winner was Leigh Farley closely followed by Dale Chamberlain. Leigh Farley is currently training for the Finke Desert race in Alice Springs in early June

and with his standard of riding looks set to be ready for the Finke. No injuries were recorded and the girls from St John Ambulance once again sat in the shade and had nothing to do. Special thanks again goes to all the supporters and volunteers of the club. Without them no events can take place. Our next event is this weekend, Sunday April 29, so come on down and see the junior and senior event. All are welcome.

AFL triangular competition kicks into action LEFT: Gapuwiyak and Gove AFL teams. BOTTOM: The Groote Eylandt and Gapuwiyak teams.

First monthly winners for East Arnhem Sports Awards

By HAMISH SIMPSON YIRRKALA played host to a triangular series of matches on Sunday, April 15, with teams from Groote Eylandt, Gove region and Gapuwiyak participating. The first of three matches was played between a representative team from the GAFL and a representative team from the GEFL (Groote). The game started at a frantic pace as both teams were able to display a great spectacle of attacking running football. An early injury blow to Robert Clements in the first minute of the match allowed Groote to kick the first goal of the match. Sebastian Wanambi and Dongga Maymuru started to turn the game with a number of fast centre breaks at the start of the second quarter. At half time the team from Gove held a slender advantage after taking the advantage of kicking with a strong breeze in the second quarter and led the match by three goals at the main break. This trend continued for the second half and Gove ran out winners by 27 points. Gapuwiyak and Groote was the next match

on the schedule. Gapuwiyak started the game with blistering speed and enthusiasm and jumped out the blocks to lead at quarter time by two goals. The Groote Eylandt defences were continually challenged and Shannon Jaragba and Ian Brown worked overtime to repel many Gapuwiyak forward thrusts. In the second half Groote showed signs of fatigue as Gapuwiyak continued to deliver the ball with precision into their three key forward targets and eventually ran out winners by 36points. The last match between Gove and Gapuwiyak would decide the overall winner and both teams although tired from their previous matches gave it all. Both teams traded goal for goal all the way through to the third quarter. At the start of the fourth Gapuwiyak held a two point lead and were able to kick away after they slotted the first two goals in two minutes of the fourth quarter. Gove never gave in and showed resilience and determination to kick the next two goals quickly to close the gap to within one kick again. From this point it was a shoot out and with Gapuwiyak edging ahead before the final siren to run out eventual winners by eight points. Better players included; Gapuwiyak

- Dion Wunungmurra, Nathan Garawirrtga, Thomas Guyula and Manuel Dhamarrandji and Gove AFL - Nonnugu Wanambi, Rranga Mununggurr, Dongga Maymuru and Darren Mununggurr. The carnival was a huge success and leaders within all teams were very keen to establish an ongoing carnival or league from this point on. Vern Patullo must be congratulated for his excellent coaching of the GAFL team. Mick Montague and Ian Brown who are the AFLNT regional development officers from Gapuwiyak and Groote respectively must also be acknowledged for outstanding contributions to the day. A special mention must be given to EASC’s Shirley Finn (and husband Alan) who worked tirelessly at very short notice to make the event such a success. GAFL representative team 11.6.72 defeated Groote Eylandt representative team 6.9.45 Gapuwiyak representative team 7.3.45 defeated Groote Eylandt representative team 1.3.9 Gapuwiyak representative team 6.5.41 defeated Gove representative team 5.3.33
