NEWS FOR EAST ARNHEM LAND, INCLUDING NHULUNBUY AND YIRRKALA
Yirrkala artist receives fellowship A YIRRKALA artist was among the inaugural recipients of the Sidney Myer Creative Fellowships. Late last year the Trustees of the Sidney Myer Fund announced the recipients of the Fellowships which are for Australian artists, arts managers and thought leaders. Gunybi Ganambar did not know he had been nominated so the call to say he was a recipient came as a big surprise. “I live a very humble life in the homeland of Gangan,” he said. “I was very lucky as I was brought up with discipline by my father. He taught me to walk and hunt and sing and dance. “One time we almost died when our boat capsized in Blue Mud Bay and I was badly cut by the propeller. We had to swim a couple of kilometres to an island. He taught me to look after myself. I am happy to receive this award. I just try to share my skills and the ideas that I was taught but I am no different from anyone else. I am going forward not in reverse.” Yidaki (Didgeridoo) player and visual artist Ganambarr was born in north east Arnhem Land and is part of the Ngaymil Gunybi clan. His practice has developed from works on bark to use of found objects to create both traditional and innovative sculptural forms. Mr Ganambar was the winner of the Western Australian Indigenous Art Award last August. His entry was supported by The Buku Larrnggay Mulka Centre and manager of the centre Will Stubbs said: “The criteria for this prestigious award is courage and innovation and Gunybi exemplifies these two characteristics. “He is a natural artist and has become a significant national figure. He is a leader of the new generation of Yolngu artists who are set to carry on the powerful national artistic contribution of their predecessors.” Local member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said: “With more than 300 nominations for 12 Fellowships and just one recipient in the NT, I can only say that Gunybi Ganambarr is richly deserving of the recognition. “He is an incredibly talented artist and one of the most innovative of the region’s artists I’ve ever

days and may enter the Timor Sea. The likelihood of a tropical cyclone developing in the region on Wednesday is ‘moderate’. Flood warnings have been issued for Arnhem Land as storms and

seen.” The 2012 Sidney Myer Creative Fellows represent some of the most exciting and diverse artistic practice from the raw and sacred clan designs of north-east Arnhem Land to the innovative landscape of contemporary theatre practice in Perth . The 12 artists were selected from over 300 nominations with regard to two criteria - outstanding talent and exceptional courage. The 2012 Fellows include representatives from the performing arts, visual arts and the sphere of thought leadership. Each of the Fellows receives grants of $80000 per year for two years. The Sidney Myer Fund has a long history of providing support to the arts. Starting in Sidney Myer’s own lifetime, the tradition of giving continues with these exciting new Fellowships. “Sidney Myer was a passionate supporter of the arts as well as a great philanthropist, and was actively engaged in his community. The Fellowships support his belief that the arts are inseparable from everyday life, and that a rich society is one that expresses great creative spirit,” said Carrillo Gantner, Chairman of Trustees of the Sidney Myer Fund. “The Fellowships will support artists, arts managers and thought leaders at a critical stage in their career. We hope it will inspire them to great things as their career develops.” The selection panel members for the 2012 Fellows were from a range of artistic backgrounds and representatives of the Sidney Myer Fund. Other Fellows are: G”rkem Acaro?lu, Brook Andrew, Joseph Appiah Kojo Annan, Natasha Cica, Ben Cobham, Robert Cousins, Sam Fox, Finegan Kruckemeyer, Katie Noonan, Hannah Skrzynski and Eugene Ughetti. Myer’s Leonard Vary (new CEO), Debra Morgan and Kirsty Allengo met Gunybi and spent time with him when they visited Yirrkala for some cross-cultural training, client visits and time with staff and artists and cultural directors at Buku and the Mulka Project. AUSTRALIA Day is a time for celebration across the country and Nhulunbuy is no exception. This year there are a number of activities organised throughout town and a major part of the celebration is the presentation of the Nhulunbuy Citizen of the Year Award. This year there are three nominations and they are Ian Constantine, Chris Putland and Ian MacLean and the winner will be announced at the Town Hall at 5pm on Thursday. IAN CONSTANTINE Ian is well regarded among the Yolngu communities for his efforts in coaching and playing sport over many years. He particularly coached several Yolngu Ian Constantine. basketball teams and took representative teams away in the earlier days. Gifted with great culinary skills, Ian had at many times catered for many community functions such as the debutante ball and so much more. On many occasions over the years Ian was heavily involved with the Gove Aussie Rules football league commonly known as GAFL. While with the club he volunteered most of his time as umpire in the matches that were played in the local competitions. In more recent years Ian had been working tirelessly in helping in the organising of the Tour de Arnhemland which raised funds for St John Ambulance and MIWATJ Health. His efforts in organising this event made others around him very proud of his achievements. CHRISTOPHER PUTLAND Chris is an outstanding member of the community who over many years has given up countless hours of his time for the benefit of others. In the early days Chris had Chris Putland. four children
in the swimming club and was actively involved in supporting the club through committee work and fundraising especially as a long term MC at the famous quiz nights. Chris was, and is still, heavily involved in a lot of fundraising done by different groups and organisations in town. He was involved in one of the first grade 6 school trips to Canberra both as a fundraiser and as a travelling parent. Another group that enjoyed his company was the Variety group. Chris was a fundraiser, working bee member for Variety, and a bus driver on their trips away. The East Arnhem Rugby Union also has the privilege of having Chris as a great fundraiser and supporter. He was on the fundraising committee and was also a travelling member of the East Arnhem Rugby Union team on their recent trip to Singapore. At the end of 2009 he resigned from the Nhulunbuy High School Council after nine years of contributions and served as chairman for many of them. Recently Chris has been heavily involved in helping the Relay for Life event and also the High School debutante balls. The Surf Club has been especially well served by Chris over the last 12 years. He has been an official junior coordinator and tournament director for the NT titles, mentor for the Cadet Group, working bee contributor, NT delegate, fundraiser, barbecue helper, barman, member of the new committee, organiser of the 2007 Barefoot Ball at Little Bondi Beach (which was voted event of the year) and became president of the Gove Surf Life Saving Club in 2007, vice-president in 2008, and was re-elected again to president in 2009 up until present day. Chris is regarded as a “star” by the Gove Surf Life Saving crew and many find that it would be tough to run the Club without him. It is apparent that Chris sees the need to contribute to this community. It is obviously apparent in all aspects of his life that he has the desire and need to make a difference. There can be no doubt that he has achieved this in his typically selfless manner. Chris is the type of person that makes this community what it is. A community that supports each other through the good times and the bad.
IAN MACLEAN Ian has sustained several community groups that see wide interest in the community over long periods of time when there has not been Ian MacLean. sufficient key people to keep the committees going. The Gove Peninsula Festival, a week long festival bringing a wide range of the community together, had quietly faded away until Ian single handedly revived it, garnered support and resources, and brought it back as a regular event on the Gove Calendar. It is now aiming to be an ongoing and sustainable event to continue a history that extends back almost 40 years. Ian has been working in Gove for more than 20 years and during that time has always had an intense involvement in many community groups. He, as an announcer on Gove FM, runs the Gove Astronomy Club (membership 50+), Arnhem writers group (membership 20+ and members regularly published), and president and driving force behind the revived Gove Peninsula Festival. Ian also contributes to Garma, the key Indigenous festival in Gove, and has done so for many years. Ian displays key leadership in being the key person in these community groups but does so in a way that others are encouraged to be involved and contribute to the groups knowing that their input will be valued and appreciated. He aspires to make sure that all the groups that he is involved with are sustainable in the long term and continue to be valuable to the Nhulunbuy community. Ian has been successful in negotiating with several levels of government to obtain funding, assistance and support as well as garnering significant sponsorships from a wide range of Nhulunbuy businesses, including Rio Tinto. His unflagging enthusiasm and drive have encouraged others to contribute and all the groups that Ian has an association with enjoy healthy membership and active participation from the wider Gove community. This is most clearly demonstrated in the Gove Peninsula Festival which sees almost half the Gove population attend over the week-long festival.
Australiana the theme for Gove celebrations AUSTRALIANA is the order of the day when it comes to Australia Day celebrations in Gove this year. The celebrations start with a free trivia night at the Walkabout Lodge on Wednesday. There will be four to six people per table and there is no need to book a table. Nhulunbuy Rotary Club is running the event for the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited. There will be seven categories all featuring Australiana. NCL community liaison officer Ace Rabukawaqa said there were heaps of giveaways for those who attend with prizes for each category. “Finger food will be available on the night and the bar will also be open,” he said. “We have approached a number of businesses and organisations

around town that would like to enter a team. The good thing is that it is free to enter and there’s loads of prizes to give away.” Also on Wednesday night there will be a rugby match between Australia and a team made up of players from New Zealand and the rest of the world. This will be played at Hindle Oval from 6.30pm. On Australia Day the fun run will start at 6.30am followed by activities at the Gove Aquatic Centre. Presentation of Australia Day awards will take place at the Town Hall from 5pm followed by a free family movie. At the Gove Boat Club they will be holding thong throwing and pie eating competitions from noon and there will also be entertainment from Mojo Soul.
Cut cables cause chaos MORE than 4000 Top End homes were without a phone line or internet last Thursday night after a contractor cut a major underground cable in Darwin. Telstra’s Northern Territory manager Brian O’Keefe said 4000 homes did not have a phone connection in Nhulunbuy, Casuarina and Berrimah. Mr O’Keefe said the major disruptions were a reminder of why it is important for workers to dial before they dig. “Unfortunately we get circumstances where people haven’t checked what cables are in the area prior to doing some work and unfortunately we end up in these situations,” he said. Disruptions remained until Friday morning.

Luggage seized at Gove Airport last Thursday night contained over 1200 deal bags. A 46-year-old Tongan National has been charged with supplying a trafficable quantity of kava at Nhulunbuy airport on Thursday night. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said members seized just over 61 kilograms of kava after searching the man’s baggage. “The man was on a flight from Sydney to Nhulunbuy with three large heavy suitcases when he was intercepted by local police at the airport,” he said. “Inside the three suitcases members located 1208 deal bags of kava and three larger one kilogram bags. The estimated value would be $62,000 if sold in remote communities.
Major shakeup at Indigenous organisation THE Board of Bunuwal, an Indigenous organisation based in Yirrkala, was sacked by the Northern Land Council late last year. Two members have since been re-instated and two additional Marika family members have been given a place on the new board. There are four organisations under the group’s umbrella and they are the Rirratingu Aboriginal Corporation, Bunuwal Investments, Yirrkala Danbul and Bunuwal Industrial. The Rirratingu Corporation receives mining royalties from Rio Tinto’s Alcan mine on the Gove Peninsula on behalf of traditional owners. This money flows into projects managed by Bunuwal Investments, in which the Northern Land Council has a stake. The NLC sacked the entire board of directors in September last year. The Arafura Times contacted Bunuwal and they were not able to comment at this stage.

“It frustrates Police that these traffickers continue to supply and distribute substances that have a potentially devastating effect on remote communities. The black market kava trafficking is taking a lot of money out of these communities. Money that could be better spent on food for families. “This is a great result in our ongoing fight against kava and drug traffickers supplying remote communities.” The Department of Immigration has been notified of the incident. The man was remanded in custody to appear at Darwin Magistrates Court on Monday.

Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon with just some of the prizes on offer for children caught doing the right thing. By MARJO HALLOWELL POLICE have been busy throughout the school holidays handing out tickets to children. As part of a pro-active campaign to reinforce good behaviour by youngsters police have been noting when children are wearing helmets and seat belts. Both these are a legal requirements but rather than reprimand them when they are not obeying the rules they have taken to rewarding them with raffle tickets when they do. At the end of the holidays the raffle will be drawn with all those
who have received tickets given the opportunity to win some of the many prizes donated by local businesses. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said it was encouraging to see so many businesses supporting the incentive. “They have really got behind the scheme and supported it and the police officers have also been diligent ensuring they encourage the kids wherever they see them doing the right thing,” he said. He plans to run the programme again in the mid year school holidays and presentations will be made to winners of the summer campaign on February 1.

a LoCaL business operator won an iPad for taking the time to submit her feedback after an economic development forum held late last year. Helen Martin from banubanu Wilderness retreat was presented with an iPad 2 by Member for nhulunbuy Lynne Walker last week The prize was given as a part of a follow up survey on the Indigenous Economic Development Forum (IED) which was held in october at the Darwin Convention Centre. Ms Walker said Indigenous business owners were invited to submit their feedback on the event to help shape future forums. “The IED Forum focused on ways to build, support and strengthen Indigenous business partnerships and
develop the capacity of stakeholders to achieve sustainable economic activity throughout the northern Territory,” she said. results from the survey show 87.8 per cent of business owners said they would benefit from another business to business (Indigenous business and private sectors) event in the future. “These results show the need for continued business support and partnerships by government,” Mrs Walker said. “From the survey we were able to identify what events and programmes were valuable for business owners.” Ms Martin was one of 343 people that attended the IED forum which
was attended by representatives from a wide range of industries including tourism, horticulture and construction. “This was my first time attending the forum and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience meeting a lot of new people and networking,” she said. “I also enjoyed the guest speakers who were inspirational. “The iPad will come in very handy and means we will be able to ensure we do not miss any internet enquiries. “We do have bookings from throughout australia and we also have many locals now taking advantage of what banubanu has to offer.” For more information, go to www.dhlgrs.nt.gov.au/iedforum
On the beat with NT Police Police targeting arterial roads Maranboy Police, with the assistance of the Katherine Dog Unit and Katherine Substance abuse Intelligence Desk (SaID) held a two day operation last week. Police based a vehicle checkpoint at the King river rest stop on the Stuart Highway, about eight kilometres north of the Central arnhem road intersection. The operation was aimed at intercepting vehicles bound for the outlying aboriginal communities along the Central arnhem road and roper Highway. Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Littman said Police had identified the road for special attention. “This road has traditionally been used to supply outlying communities as far away as ramingining and Maningrida with illegal substances such as cannabis, kava and alcohol.” he said. During the operation Police stopped 33 vehicles and seized approximately 21 grams of Cannabis. A total of five people were apprehended in relation to drug related offences. Police and SAID officers will continue to operate random checkpoints throughout the Northern Territory to disrupt the trafficking of illegal substances into aboriginal communities.
Mataranka Police foil dealers MaTaranKa general duty members have seized a significant haul of cannabis that was destined for the remote communities of numbulwar and alyangula. While conducting a random breath test on a vehicle travelling on the Jilkminggan access road a Police officer noticed a bottle of rum on the floor behind the passenger. A search of the vehicle was conducted during which officers allegedly discovered a quantity of cannabis inside the glove box. a 27 year-old female was arrested. The find included 115 individually packaged deal bags and four larger bags with a total weight of 205 grams. acting Senior Sergeant andrew Littman from the arnhem and Western Division of northern Command said Police estimate the drugs would have sold for $20,000 to $30,000. “It was an excellent piece of police work by Mataranka members in circumventing this supply of drugs which was otherwise bound for arnhem Land communities.” The woman will be summonsed at a later date.

New boat for local police THE Nhulunbuy Police now has a new boat so they can respond to emergencies on the water. The 5.5 metre Aqualine can respond to any emergencies within two nautical miles of the coast and Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said it was a welcome addition to the station. “ We a r e g e t t i n g a l a rg e r b o a t t o deal with rescues at sea but for now at least we have a vessel that can handle the minor emergencies are around the coastline.” “A boat is a much needed resource and we hope to source a larger vessel
in the not too distant future.” Nhulunbuy has a high ratio of boat ownership with many vessels having minor breakdowns at sea and relying on other vessels to come to their rescue. The need for a permanent boat was highlighted last November when a couple’s boat sank in a matter of minutes. They were not rescued for three hours and were fortunate that the local, privately owned, helicopter was not out on a job and that the local Coastguard was also available to send out a boat to pick up the stranded couple.
Arnhem Club appoints new operations manager
Police have often had to call on local boat owners to assist in instances such as when a small child threw boat keys into the water leaving the parents and two small children stranded on their boat unable to return to the wharf. They have also had a number of requests to rescue people off islands when motor troubles prevented their arranged return transport from picking them up. With the new boat they can save time trying to gain access to private boats when responding to calls. The larger seven metre boat will arrive once transportation can be arranged.

Dave Collins, new operations manager. FROM five star hotels to pubs the new operations manager at the Arnhem Club brings with him a wealth of experience. Dave Collins has been at the club for two weeks and is familiar with the hospitality industry and the climate of the Territory as he has worked in Darwin for 12 years. Coming from the Darwin Airport Resort Mr Collins said he is keen to ensure the club can rebuild its reputation as being a very family friendly club that provides excellent service for its patrons. Before the resort Mr Collins managed Blue Healers and Kitty O’Sheas. “Customer service is our most valuable asset and this is what our main focus will be,” he said. “We have a staff of about 30 but need to up that to 40 and encourage local residents to apply. “There will be a few changes and we hope the members will see that this is a club for the community.” Mr Collins said he was looking forward to building up community participation with darts, pool and bowls competitions. Sports will play a major part in the club. Changes are to be made including extended hours for Kools and promoting counter meals as well as changes in Macassans. He said they would be introducing themed lunches and perhaps a carvery on Sundays. “All the changes will focus on service with all staff taking responsibility for excellent service for the patrons. “Our courtesy bus will operate along fixed routes and at fixed times so people can plan their nights out and utilise the bus. “With the focus on service we hope to encourage members to return to the club and plan for it to again be a club for all the family.”

Search on for local talent MUSICIANS are being encouraged to tune up their instruments and head down to the Walkabout for the opportunity for some professional gigs. General manager of the Walkabout Tony Weldon said he was aware there was some real talent in the area and wanted to encourage serious musicians. “I want to tap into the professional element and know there are some extremely talented musicians up here,” he said. “We will be holding auditions for solo acts, duos, trios and bands who can meet the demands of the commercial market. “They will all have to be able to perform three sets of 45 minutes and be able to perform popular covers. They must have a repertoire that would suit a number of varying functions. “Professional musicians could get work in the
tavern or in the lodge and would need to be versatile to cover the needs of all areas.” Mr Weldon said they are looking at holding auditions and is keen to hear from any musicians who feel they would fit the bill. “We are giving professional musicians the opportunity to work locally to further their own careers. “As well as searching for professional musicians we would also like to encourage groups with perhaps just one 45 minute repertoire as we can use several groups on the same night so they too can call.” The search is for musicians over 18 years or older as they need to comply with licensing laws. Anyone who feels they may fit the bill can contact Mr Weldon or Bernard on 8987 2060.

Newcomers warned about stinger danger The acting Minister for health, Rob Knight, is reminding Top end newcomers about the real dangers posed by box jellyfish in Territory waters. “With the stinger season at its peak now is the time to be vigilant in Top End waters,” Mr Knight said. “The Territory is moving in the right direction, and many more people are now coming to the Territory to enjoy wonderful opportunities and take part in our great Territory lifestyle. “Stingers are often found close to shore so wading in the shallows and tidal creeks or using boat ramps can put you at risk of a painful sting. “Their name may suggest they only pose a minor risk but an adult box jellyfish can have 40 or more tentacles, each up to two metres in length, loaded with a potentially lethal venom. Contact causes excruciatingly painful stings and can result in lifelong welts on the skin. There are also cardiac risks and fatalities from box jellyfish have occurred. “Small children are most at risk as the venom will have an even stronger effect in their small bodies than it would in an adult.” “Each year about 40 people present to Top End doctors and health facilities as a result of contact with stingers. Just this week a four-year- old child was taken to Royal Darwin hospital emergency department for treatment. “If you can’t avoid being in sea water, such as when you’re launching a boat, it’s important to cover up by wearing long sleeved tops and long shorts or trousers. “It’s also important that adults keep a close eye on children when they’re at the beach or near waterways to ensure they stay well clear of the water at all times,” Mr Knight said. If someone does get stung: Douse the area with plenty of vinegar if you have it; If any tentacles are on the skin you can pull them off (the skin on your fingers is too thick for the sting to penetrate); Take the person to hospital; If they are really unwell you may need to do CPR or call an ambulance. For information about stingers visit www.health. nt.gov.au/Stinger_Season

letters to the editor Apology to Dhimurru for causing damage On Saturday, december 3, I was riding a quad bike through the dunes and onto the beach at Wirrawawuy. this may have caused damage to the fragile dune system destroying vegetation and de-stablising the dunes. It is against dhimurru permit conditions, which states that I can only ride a quad on designated vehicle tracks. I extend my sincere apologies to the traditional owners and to
dhimurru. dhimurru rangers have spent a lot of time and effort to protect the dune systems for everyone to enjoy. My actions have caused damage to plants which will take a long time to regenerate. I appreciate the traditional owners generosity having put a management system in place through dhimurru and giving everyone an opportunity to enjoy our beautiful beaches and scenic areas. I understand that vehicle
access to the town beaches, including Wirrwawuy, is not permitted. this is to protect the dunes and beach areas from erosion but also to ensure that all users can share these places safely. My actions driving onto the dunes and beach has damaged the vegetation and was a clear breach of dhimurru permit conditions. I urge anyone wanting to access yolgnu land and the recreation areas managed by
dhimurru to ensure they have a current permit and they are familiar with the conditions that apply. It is the responsibility of permit holders to know and are aware of the conditions that apply. Being unaware of the conditions is not a defence. again I extend my most sincere apologies to the traditional owners and dhimurru. S Ridgway Nhulunbuy
Experienced drivers fail the parking test OnLy just last week I passed my P’s test first go, with a 100 per cent score card. My instructor was very pleased and my dad even prouder. But I can’t help but notice how P-platers get a lot of hate from the more experienced drivers for our driving. Mind you in some cases I can see why. Today , January 12, a friend and I drove into the Woolies car park to find an experienced driver (by experienced I mean any one with
an open licence) parked up on the curb of the car park with the rest of the car vertically in the car park. now there may have been a car parked next to it originally, making it a hard position to park in but when I took a photo it was empty. For years my parents have been saying how Woolies car park is too small for our car, but I don’t understand how someone would leave their car parked like this and not be the least bit phased or embarrassed. I have seen
Environment Minister invited to talk on cash for containers I’VE written to my colleague and Environment Minister, Karl Hampton, requesting officers from the department Electoral News o f n a t u r a l by NT Member for Nhulunbuy resources and LYNNE WALKER Environment visit nhulunbuy to talk with stakeholders about the newly introduced cash for containers scheme and how we might progress the establishment of a collection depot here for consumers to receive their ten cent refund on eligible containers. Last week the community of apatula in Central australia gained approval to operate a collection depot - the first in a regional or remote community - and certainly an encouraging sign that depots can and will be established in the bush. By the same token, it’s disheartening to see recalcitrant sectors of the beverage industry including Coca Cola amatil determined to derail the scheme by hiking prices which are passed on to retailers and consumers, on the premise that it’s to cover the cost of the scheme. Consumer affairs are currently investigating complaints and allegations of price gouging in the nt. We know that
beverage prices in Sa, where the scheme has operated for decades, have not risen and nor should they in the territory. THE first of the two annual rounds of the NT Community Benefit Fund is now open with applications closing on February 28. Grants of up to $5,000 are available for community groups with guidelines and application forms available on the nt department of Justice website or by phoning freecall 1300 650 153. In december three local organisations were beneficiaries of $10,000 in CBF grants including Anglicare, Gove Boat Club and nhulunbuy Playgroup. aLSO open at the moment and closing on January 30 are the Sporting Grass Roots Development Grants. Organisations (including clubs, groups, service deliverers, shire and municipal councils) can apply for up to $3,000 to implement a new sport or recreation programme, or increase the capacity of their organisation to deliver sport or recreation programmes. Visit www. sportandrecreation.nt.gov.au for application forms and guidelines. tHanKS to nhulunbuy Corporation and their sport and recreation officer, ace, for organising tomorrow’s australia day celebrations. I look forward to seeing people at the pool and later in the day at the town hall.

cars parked like this many times, even one car sprawled out across two parking spots, too lazy to fix their parking. How are these people allowed to be driving when they can’t even park? Definitely a great example to all the young people who are going out to get their licence. It’s not always the inexperienced drivers who fail. Name supplied and withheld at author’s request.

Car stranded at crossing AnoTHer vehicle has been towed to safety after becoming stuck at a crocodile-infested river crossing. Police found the car teetering on the edge of cahill’s crossing near Jabiru on Sunday, January 15. A truck pulled it clear. The crossing has always been hazardous because the river is tidal. Three men spent a terrifying night in their four-wheel-drive after being stuck halfway last month. A storeman was killed by a huge crocodile at the crossing in the late 1980s.

Organ donation encouraged AS a national awareness week for organ and tissue donation approaches Territorians are reminded to seriously consider discussing their future wishes with their families. organ donor rates in the northern Territory doubled last year, putting the nT third in the country behind South Australia and Victoria with 17.5 donors per million people. Four families consented for their loved ones to be organ donors in 2011. Their donations resulted in 12 people across Australia on the transplant waiting list receiving life-saving transplants. nT Medical director for organ and Tissue donation Associate Professor dianne Stephens said the decision to agree to organ donation while grieving the loss of a family member is a remarkable act of kindness that changes the lives of other families in a positive way. She thanked the donor families for their gift of life and encouraged all Territorians to talk with their own
families about their organ donation wishes in 2012. “While we wish that no families were placed in the situation of losing a family member, we hope that those families who find themselves in this situation consider consenting to organ donation so more people on the transplant waiting list receive the gift of life in 2012,” Ms Stephens said. “it can be a tough decision for a family to make but it really is a life-changing experience for not only those who are able to receive a transplant but also for the donor’s family knowing they have helped to save several lives.” February 19-26 is DonateLife Week, the national awareness week for organ and tissue donation. Keep your eye out for events in the NT and discover the facts, make a decision about being an organ and tissue donor, and most importantly tell your loved ones. For information about donatelife Week and how you can be involved phone 8922 6190.

Property crime targeted MAninGridA Police, in conjunction with officers from the Katherine based Operation Stinger, are currently targeting property crime offenders in the community. Responding to reports of unlawful entries at unoccupied homes during the holiday season, officers conducted a sweep through the community on Thursday resulting in the arrest of five males aged 16, 17, 19, 21 and 25. They have been charged with various offences including unlawful entry, criminal damage and stealing. district curfew conditions were imposed as part of bail conditions. The males are set to appear in the Maningrida Magistrates court on February 8. “community members are encouraged to properly secure their premises when going away on holiday”, said Superintendent colin Smith from the Arafura division. “if you are aware that you will be away for an extended period it is recommended that you notify a friend, relative or work mate who can keep an eye on your home in your absence.” The operation will continue with a focus on unlawful entries committed at business premises in the community and further arrests are anticipated. “This kind of offending in a small community is extremely disappointing. local Police will continue to target these offence types, applying strict bail conditions and placing offenders before the courts,” he said.

Legislation for plain packing of cigarettes passed THE Gillard Government’s tobacco plain packaging legislation recently passed through the Australian Senate meaning all tobacco products sold in Australia will need to be in plain packaging from December 1, 2012. “The Australian Senate passed one of the most significant public health measures in its historylegislation requiring the plain packaging of tobacco products,” said former Federal Health Minister and current Attorney General Nicola Roxon. “Plain packaging means that the glamour is gone from smoking and cigarettes are now exposed for what they are: killer products that destroy thousands of Australian families. “We know that packaging remains one of the last powerful marketing tools for tobacco companies to recruit new smokers to their deadly products. In the future cigarette packets will serve only as a stark reminder of the devastating health effects of smoking. “The Government is not intimidated by big tobacco and is determined to act in the best interests of the health and well being of the Australian people. “Let there be no mistake, big tobacco is fighting against the Government for one very simple reason - because it knows, as we do, that plain packaging will work. While it is fighting to protect its profits and we are fighting to protect lives. “The World Health Organization has recognised Australia’s lead in tobacco control singling out our plain packaging legislation as an example for the world to follow,” said Ms Roxon. The amendments to the Tobacco Plain Packaging Bill 2011 that were passed by the Senate will now be voted on by the House of Representatives.
Crypto on the increase across the NT CAREFUL hygiene and food safety practices are being encouraged in the Territory following a notable rise in the number of cases of the stomach bug Cryptosporidium in recent weeks including one in East Arnhem Land. Director of the Centre for Disease Control, Dr Vicki Krause, said 27 cases were reported in December, with a further eight cases so far this month. “We’ve seen twice the expected gastroenteritis cases caused by the Cryptosporidium parasite,” Dr Krause said. “The current hot and humid weather is providing the perfect conditions for the bug to thrive and we are expecting to see more cases.” Dr Krause explained that common symptoms are watery diarrhoea and stomach cramps. These may last for a few days but can continue for several weeks. “Cryptosporidiosis, or “crypto”, is a disease caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium parvum. It can be spread by ingesting food or water that has been contaminated by people infected by the parasite,” she said. “The most severe infections usually occur in people who have weakened immune systems, including the elderly, small children, people on chemotherapy and people with chronic diseases.” Dr Krause warned that people can pass on the parasitic infection up to two weeks after their diarrhoea and stomach cramps have ceased. “It’s important that infected people stay away from public pools for a fortnight after they recover from the illness and don’t prepare or handle food or drinks that will be consumed by others,” she said. “Children who attend childcare facilities are at greater risk of infection as the disease can be spread when children share toys or food that has been contaminated, or swallow contaminated pool water. “It is important that children with diarrhoea don’t attend childcare or school until they have gone 24 hours without a loose bowel movement.” A useful fact sheet with more information is available at http://www.health.nt.gov.au/

THE first day at school can be a potentially tricky for both parents and children as they may experience excitement and apprehension. Kids Helpline is offering parents some tips for managing back to school stress. Kids Helpline general manager Wendy Protheroe said starting at a new school is always challenging for children, whether they are leaving mum and dad for the first time, or moving from primary school to high school. It may be one of the most exciting, scary and frustrating periods of their young lives. “It is crucial children are provided with acceptance, encouragement and support during times of transition and change,” she said. “Parents have a major role in helping children feel safe and secure as they move to new educational settings. “Children will be confronted with new challenges and uncertainties, it is important that parents listen to their children’s concerns and praise them for facing fears and trying new activities.” Kids Helpline’s suggestions for parents to support their children during this time include: 1. Be enthusiastic about the upcoming change. If you are excited and confident, your child will be too. 2. Prepare yourself and your child ahead of time - talk with your child about starting school. 3. Plan for the first day the night before to avoid the early morning
rush and any unnecessary stress ensuring a calm and confident start to school. 4. If possible visit the new school with your child and on the first day walk the little ones all the way to the classroom. 5. Start daily routines that will add a structure to make sure your child feels comfortable. For example have the school uniform ready and pack lunches in advance. 6. If your child has any special needs discuss this in advance with the teacher. These can include dietary or health requirements. 7. Put aside extra time, particularly on the first day, for chatting and commuting together. 8. After a day at school spend time with your child and listen to their stories. “These transitions are very important stages of children’s lives. They help develop coping strategies, problem solving skills and ways of seeing and understanding the world outside of their family,” Ms Protheroe said. “Really the most important things a parent can do during this time are to be positive, patient and supportive - if you listen, without interrupting, your children will share what they are feeling and experiencing.” Kids Helpline, Australia’s only national children’s counselling service, provides 24 hour counselling services to young people aged five to 25 years - free call 1800 55 1800 or online at www.kidshelp.com.au
NITV @ east arnhem land
Angela Bates showing locals some of the footage.
Out shooting in the homelands.
NITV on location in East Arnhem Land By CRAIG HODGES
Angela Bates with NITV cameraman Nik Lachajczak.
Capturing the beauty of East Arnhem Land.
EXECUTIVE producer of Current Affairs for National Indigenous TV (NITV) Angela Bates visited East Arnhem Land earlier this month. Angela made the visit to shoot interviews and background material for a half hour current affairs programme that will focus on the issue of Aboriginal homelands. Homelands have become a hot topic ever since the Federal and Territory governments announced their push to create 20 growth towns in the Northern Territory over the coming years. More recently homelands attracted the attention of many ever since a number of homeland associations were rocked by financial pressures, service delivery problems and management changes. With many people now uncertain and confused about the direction homelands will take, particularly after reading troubling reports like those that have appeared in the pages of the Arafura Times in recent months, it is clear why NITV sees this as a topic of
great interest not just for its Arnhem Land audiences but for its concerned viewers Australia wide. To tap into positive homeland developments Angela was assisted by local Nhulunbuy based business Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism. Lirrwi coordinated access for NITV out to the Bawaka homeland as NITV was keen to see an example of how homeland based businesses could work to sustain homelands. Angela and her NITV crew were fortunate to pay a visit to Bawaka while a group from Lords Safaris were on tour there. Aside from interviewing homeland visitors and Yolngu family members at Bawaka NITV also spoke with representatives from Laynhapuy Homelands and a number of individuals, such as Dhanggal Gurruwiwi and Lirrwi manager Matt Grooby, about their views on the prospects for homelands. After working with SBS for a number of years before moving to NITV we can expect that Angela will in the coming weeks put to air on NITV a thought provoking programme on homelands.

Your Lucky
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) Time spent helping out a friend at work may take up more of your energy than you expect. Your input will not go unnoticed, however. Romance. Don’t allow yourself to be ruled by your emotions. You need to make an important decision and must wait until you are more relaxed.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Once you have started a new project nobody will be able to stop you! Your momentum will help you to push through a barrier which has stopped other people in their tracks. Romance. Your partner may find it hard to cope with all your excess energy! A powerful aspect to Mars later in the week could make you a little tense: do your best to use your excess energy constructively.

FINDWORD No. 82
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Be careful that problems at work don’t spill over into your home-life. So long as you try hard to be patient, everything will be resolved. Romance. You may need a little extra emotional support from your partner at the moment. Communications between you will be especially strong, but be careful not to be too demanding.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Activities which don’t need much money will give you a chance to get back on your feet financially. Some recent extravagances have taken their toll. Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will give your love-life a push in the right direction. A romantic get-together this week will put your relationship onto much firmer ground after a recent misunderstanding.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) A surprise move later in the week may leave you wondering what is going on. Talk to a person whom you can trust – your other colleagues may not be so quick to tell you everything. Romance. A power-struggle between you and your partner will not help either of you. Do your best to settle a recent dispute in a way which satisfies both sides.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may find it difficult to tolerate people who don’t know what they are doing. You won’t appreciate having to clear up a mess caused by someone else. Romance. If you are able to relax properly this will be an excellent week for both of you. Be especially careful not to get into arguments, especially ones involving money. You won’t be in a mood for compromise at the moment!
A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) At times this week you will need to spend more time by yourself. You have a lot of work to get through and won’t be happy if you are constantly interrupted. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A kind word will go a– long way. Your enthuFor all your printing needs www.lotsa.com.au siasm and energy will be appreciated by the people around you; however you must be sympathetic to people who are not so dynamic. Romance. Make sure you don’t take any more risks than you have to, however. Romance. Time spent with someone whom you hardly know could prove interesting. This person may be much keener on you than you realised. Don’t expect any dramatic developments for the time being, however.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
“
“
It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are. – E.E. Cummings
A favourable aspect to Jupiter will help to bring a little more luck into your life over the next few days. Don’t miss an opportunity just because a friend tries to put you off. Romance. Your self-confidence will be especially high at the moment. You may need to be the one who takes the initiative in a new relationship.

Your Lucky
Stars
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will help your relationship to get back on track. A romantic trip will be worth looking forward to.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) You need to get out and spend more time with other people. A recent improvement in your social life will not last if you don’t make an effort. Romance. A romantic adventure later in the week will give your selfesteem a major boost. Don’t be so sure of yourself that you put off someone else who is more serious, however.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A friend will be impressed by your recent unselfish gesture. They will soon find a way to show their feelings for you. Romance. A stressful experience later in the week may put a temporary strain on your relationship. Do your best to forgive your partner as the issue won’t go away unless you are willing to compromise.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) This would be a good time for taking stock of recent events. You need to make some changes in your life, but they don’t need to be quite as drastic as you think. Romance. A meeting later in the week will last much longer than expected. Don’t be surprised if you end up seeing this person again soon.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A powerful aspect to Saturn will help to keep your thoughts focused in reality. You have had some good ideas recently, but not all of them are practical enough to pursue. Romance. A get-together with a person who admires you will help to give your confidence a boost.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) At times you may be so worried about helping other people that you forget your own needs. Do your best to find a better balance. Romance. It may be quite difficult at times to understand a recent decision by your partner. When you have heard all the facts you will be a little more forgiving, however.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)
A difficult aspect to Uranus this week may bring an unusual person into your life. Listen to what this new acquaintance has to say, as their advice is backed up by a lot of wisdom. Romance. Your partner will be quick to say how much they appreciate you. Be grateful for their support.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A person who doesn’t seem to be taking your feelings seriously will make you quite angry. Do your best to see things from this person’s point of view, but at the same time, make sure that you don’t let them take advantage of your good nature. Romance. Make sure that you are clear about what you really want before you make a move.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A favourable aspect to Neptune will help you to use your intuition in a situation in which you will definitely need it. The most logical solution may not be the best one to take. Romance. Your emotions will be especially strong at the moment. You will respond well, so long as your partner treats you gently and with respect.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Don’t slow down to suit other people - if they can’t keep up the pace you will have to push ahead without them. Romance. A colleague whom you thought you knew very well may surprise you today. This person has been interested in you for some time but has been trying to hide his feelings.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) You will need to make an important decision without knowing all the facts. So long as you trust to your intuition, you shouldn’t go far wrong. Romance. A meeting with a person who is much older than you could prove interesting. You will soon feel that you know this person extremely well.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Don’t allow other people to push you into doing work which they should be doing themselves. You can be too conscientious for your own good at times. Romance. A firm show of interest will help to encourage a long-standing admirer. Don’t give up until you have achieved your goal!

It attracted 38 junior golfers including players from ACT, NSW, WA and Qld. The first two days involved a clinic where players refined their skills and then they played in a two-day challenge. Playing in 41 degree heat, Katelyn said, “It was a beautiful course that had tough sand bunkers and very fast greens. It was very hot but I felt I played well and just wanted to do my best.” In this two-day, 18-hole/73-par course, Katelyn competed in a field of 12 girls and was able to achieve her personal best
He played in the Reds 2011 Super 15 winning team before joining European rugby powerhouse Munster on a short term deal during the World Cup. After an ultra impressive first month, he was offered a lucrative long term deal by the revered Irish rugby giants. However, a meeting with Melbourne Storm GM football operations, Frank Ponissi, in Limmerick, Ireland, in late November and discussions with the three quarter started about a return to rugby league with Storm.

scores: Day 1 - Gross 118/Net 76, Day 2 - Gross 117/Net 75. This result won Katelyn the U/12 Gross Winner Trophy against players much older than her. When in Alice Springs Katelyn joined in with the Palmerston Golf Club juniors and appreciated being a part of their away from home group. “We would like to thank the Gove Country Golf Club, LJ Hooker, Rio Tinto, Gorrkbuy Industries, Gove Tackle & Outdoor, East Arnhem Trading, Rotary, Qantas and the Gove community who helped in many ways to get Katelyn to this event,” said her mother, Esther. At the awards presentation, Katelyn also received an invitation to attend the “Coates Hire Mid-Year Junior Golf Clinic”, which will take place at the Palmerston Golf and Country Club June 25 -29. This event is open to juniors aged 8-18 years and Gove Junior Golf will endeavour to send a group of juniors to this event.

First race for the year was Magic By NEAL BAULCH
‘Magic’ back first after the first race of the year.
Glen and Justine Porter on board ‘Magic’.
The Gove Boat Club’s first yacht race for the year had six entries. Three of those had not raced in the bay before and all three being catamarans. They were the big cat, Magic, belonging to the club manager Rod, Otama, belonging to Trappa and a Hobie 18 skippered by Gary and crewed by Travis. They all ended up giving Sans Souci a run for her money. A circular course was set from the start line of the tug cyclone buoys with the first mark being five fathoms, then a run to the South Granite Islet, then Strath Islet, then half tide rock (although this mark for some reason was not on one of the boat’s course chart) and then back to the start/finish line of the tug cyclone buoys. The wind was a very pleasant unexpected 10/15 knots which made for a run of just over an hour around the seven and a half mile course for the fastest boat of which was the newcomer Magic. Well done Rod and crew. Next across the line was Gary on the Hobie 18 who had a bit of gear failure on the way. Next over the line after taking a short cut (albeit countered their error with a pre penalty double 360 on the start line) was Trappa on Otama. Next came Sans Souci and then Lee on Waitere. But the accolades for the day go to Tim and Jock who made their way around the course on Tim’s Hobie Adventure Islander. Well done boys. They had a great sail although Jock had an issue with his drink bottle filled with coffee tasting like salt. It was great to see the newcomers as Gary Sargood and Travis McKenzie on a Hobi 18. they added another dimension to the racing event and we hope to see them on a regular basis. There were also numerous extra crew members on the day who by all accounts had a great time and the fortnightly racing events is a perfect opportunity for those interested in trying their hand at sailing to come out to the club every second Sunday at 12:30pm. We may not be able to secure a place for everyone, depending on which boats sail on the day, but so far there have been no disappointments. So see you all on the next race day which will be on Sunday, January 29. Be sure not to miss the Australia Day celebrations at the Club on Thursday which will feature some typically Australian novelty Col and Kat on their Wharam catamaran enjoying being on the water and competition. watching the race.

BMX tour for two Nhulunbuy riders By DAVE BAXTER AFTER the recent BMX state titles here in Nhulunbuy two local riders, Reagan Roath and Tim Baxter, were picked along with 20 other riders from around the Territory to be a part of the state squad for 2012. On January 1 the squad travelled to Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast staying at the local scout troop’s bunk house to go into camp for the week leading up to the start of the national Probikz, Champbikz series and the Nerang Nationals to be contested at the newly renovated Nerang track. Some of the best riders from around the country and some from as far as the USA, Japan and New Zealand were competing at the events. After the long trip down and getting the bunk house sorted and bikes put together it was time for the hard work to start and off to some local tracks around the Gold Coast for training. Also travelling with the squad are a national fitness coach from the NTIS, a BMX coach from WA, and a number of coaches from Nhulunbuy and clubs in Jingilli and Satellite City in Darwin who were also helping out. Tuesday night saw the kids competing at Ashmore in the midweek madness meeting and all riders rode very well considering some riders not having competed since October at the state titles. A couple of riders won prize money at the event.
During the tour the kids have had their share of work to do around the camp helping prepare meals, cleaning up after meals and cleaning the accommodation block. I’m sure the coaches have had their hands full at times keeping 22 teenagers in-line and in bed at a reasonable hour so they can ride to their best ability. We take our hats off to them for all the hard work this is taking to pull it off and be a success. Back to the racing - the kids had trained hard all week with the odd time of at the beach then on Friday they were all at the track bright and early for practice. One of the things with this series is the riders have to do a time trial each where they do a timed lap of the track with one rider on the track at a time to determine which heat they will be riding in. The object is that the quick riders are mixed in with slower riders and the quick riders aren’t eliminated in the heats making the quarters, semis and finals very competitive. There was some fierce racing at times and our riders did us proud with some making quarter and semi finals. One of the things that really stands out is the Territory team is one of the only teams to be competing as a state or territory and with the riders in their state jerseys it is really noticeable. After a long day Friday it was back to the track on Saturday for
Local riders competing on national tour.
round 2 with another three moto’s. Some hard riding and today was nearly a repeat of yesterday’s successes but one stand out was Reagan Roath coming fifth in her final to take her up the rankings after two rounds. The day wasn’t over though. The riders had another three moto’s to compete in with the start of the second day of the Nerang nationals and they all slept well that night and got plenty of sleep in readiness for Sunday’s three moto’s and finals. We had another very successful day with quite a few riders making the finals. After a big weekend of racing the kids had a well earned rest day and went to the beach. Tuesday was a pretty special day going up to Brisbane for a training day with a highly qualified BMX coach on a newly completed track. Wednesday was a day getting ready to leave the Gold Coast and head to Melbourne for the next stage of the tour with the start of Track Attack. This is a series of races around Melbourne over eight days riding at six different tracks accumulating points for a series winner. We would like to wish the kids all the success and ride safe for the rest of the tour which will see them travelling across to Bunbury in WA for rounds three and four of the Probikz, Champbikz series after Melbourne.
