Nhulunbuy looks to future after Rio Tinto By GRANT BANKS The immediate restructure and eventual sale of the Gove bauxite operations by Rio Tinto Alcan may be raising a lot of eyebrows around Nhulunbuy but key stakeholders say the changes will be minor in the short term. “As far as I am concerned it will be business as usual for the community of Nhulunbuy but we will be watching this with interest to see what happens in the future,” Chamber of Commerce NT CEO Chris Young said. A Rio Tinto spokesperson said that the company would continue it’s operations under the new name of Pacific Aluminium. “It is business as usual for our operations at Gove,” the company said. “We will continue to work very closely with the Traditional Owners. “The conditions that are built into the Gove agreement transfer with the asset,” the spokesperson said. This business as usual attitude seems to be shared by the general

By GRANT BANKS GOVE Peninsula locals were pleased that Cape Arnhem opened in time for the Spring school holidays this year however a watchful eye had to be kept out for crocodiles following a number of sightings in the area. Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation had issued warnings to campers at the popular site over two consecutive weekends following numerous reports of a 4 metre crocodile in the area. One family that decided to go ahead with their holiday plans were the Van Dam family who said they observed the large crocodile cruise up and down the bay. “More alarming were the tracks it left on the beach,” Peter van Dam said. “During a morning stroll, croc tracks were found on the high tide mark. “This one would have to be more than 4 metres in size judging by the span of its feet,” he said. Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation managing director Mandaka Marika said that people needed to be very careful when camping at Wanuwuy (Cape Arnhem) at all times especially when a recent sighting had been reported. “You need to watch very carefully for Baru (crocodiles),” Mr Marika said. “They are faster than the person sitting on the beach or the river bank,” he said. “We want to send a message to the people not to come close to the water.” Recent crocodile sightings have also been reported at Yirrkala and he urged the residents there to also be cautious. “Don’t let your kids swim,” he said. Paul Augustin, project facilitator with Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation, said that crocodiles were a constant threat in the Northern Territory and that people needed to be aware of the dangers of swimming regardless of if there were current warning in place. “Not only do people need to be aware when by the sea but also when they are near in-land waterways as well,” Mr Augustin said. He said that Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation had recently put new signs up in many of the most dangerous areas.

community with many Rio workers optimistic about the future. “Rio Tinto Alcan or Pacific Aluminium, it doesn’t mater what the company is called the jobs are still here,” a Rio worker, who did not want to be identified, said. “While the bauxite is still in the ground there will still be jobs here.” This was a common sentiment among many of the people the Arafura Times spoke with. Tim Broadbent, general manager of East Arnhem Trading, also shared this opinion. “From my point of view, I don’t see things changing too much.” “Rio Tinto have really not delivered anything new to town,” he said. “One thing I personally believe is that it can only get better for this town once Rio Tinto move on.” “Not being disrespectful, but let’s hope that someone like Chinalco or BHP move in here and concentrate on infrastructure and growth within the region,” Mr Broadbent said. A HOMECOMING for third generation Govite Sarah Munnings has become a windfall for Nhulunbuy as she has established a permanent physiotherapy practice at the Endeavour Medical Centre. Up until Monday, when she opened her doors for the first time, the general community of the Gove Peninsula has been without a full-time physiotherapist. “The only physio in town only serviced aged and disability patients,” Mrs Munnings said. “It is unbeleiveable that there hasn’t been a regular physiotherapist in town, to me it is a service that is absolutely essential.” Until now people recovering from injury or operations were forced to fly to either Darwin or Cairns for treatment or worse still were forced to leave town. “If they have to travel for treatment then they would be sitting on a plane for over an hour which is pretty much the worst thing they could do,” she said. She said that while she had only been back in town for two weeks already the interest in her services is mounting and as a born-and-bred ‘local’ she plans to see this practice established for the long term. Sarah (nee Fincham-Thomson) was born in Gove District Hospital and educated in Nhulunbuy from pre-school to year 12. She went on to study at Griffith University, firstly completing a degree in Exercise Science and then a Masters of Physiotherapy. Since graduating two years ago Sarah has worked at Queensland’s Logan Hospital as a Physiotherapist gaining valuable experience in the fields of Musculoskeletal, Orthopedics, Intensive Care, ED, Women’s Health and Cardiorespiritory Physiotherapy. This year Sarah and husband Nick Munnings spent several months travelling and working in Europe prior to relocating to Nhulunbuy. She has has registered her business as Arnhem Physiotherapy Services and is practising at the Endeavour Medical Centre.

After more than seven years of study and Hospital placements in Queensland, Sarah Munnings has returned to Nhulunbuy with husband Nick and is establishing a much needed Physiotherapy Practice in Gove, the town of her birth.

Search for standout health workers THE search has started for the Territory’s standout Aboriginal Health Workers (AHW), with nominations now open for the 2011 Excellence Awards. Health Minister Kon Vatskalis said the annual awards seek to identify and congratulate Aboriginal Health Workers who excel in their jobs.

“Aboriginal health workers are essential health professionals who not only deliver valuable health services across the Territory, they perform the important task of linking the community with the health provider,” Mr Vatskalis said. Now in its sixth year, the awards which are presented by the Northern Territory Government in partnership with the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise, the Department of Health and Ageing and the United Voice Union, and are expected to attract more nominations than ever. “Last year’s AHW winners, Raelene Mungatopi, Debbie Smith, Leitisha Jackson and Nathan Aucote

all demonstrated a high level of commitment and excellence and I expect to see the same calibre of nominees this year,” Mr Vatskalis said. The awards comprise four categories, Remote, Urban, Specialised and New Practitioner, recognising those who demonstrate outstanding qualities in their field of practice. “Any Aboriginal Health Worker who is currently registered with the Aboriginal Health Worker Board of the Northern Territory can be nominated for an award, but if you know a deserving worker you need to nominate soon, as entries close on 28 October,” Mr Vatskalis said.

A selection committee comprising community and professional representatives will select the finalists from each of the categoriesand an overall winner will be assessed for the Excellence or ‘Legend’ Award. All finalists along with the winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by Mr Vatskalis at Parliament House on 18 November 2011, winners and runners up in each category will receive study bursaries to continue to develop their skills. For more information or to obtain a nomination form visit: http://www.nt.gov.au/health/ahw/

RTA opts to absorb fuel hike temporary 37c/litre subsidy while fuel is barged in By GRANT BANKS THE RECENT diesel price hike in Nhulunbuy of 30c a litre certainly upset a few locals, but the party responsbile for the increase, Rio Tinto Alcan, thankfully had a change of heart and decided to absorb the temporary increase. Prior to the RTA backflip, the increase had been described by residents and industry experts as ludicrous while Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) had explained the spike as a result of a maintenance issue. What sparked the outrage among Nhulunbuy residents was a 15 per cent, or 30c per litre, rise in fuel seemingly over-night. At the start of September fuel was priced at $1.82 per litre at BP Service Station Nhulunbuy and it sat around this price for the whole of that month with the price on September 29 still being $1.82 per litre. Then three days later the price had jumped to $2.10. “The increase is a result of a maintenance issue in relation to how Rio Tinto Alcan Gove receives its fuel inventory,” an RTA spokesperson said. “Historically RTA Gove received its fuel inventory from bulk shipments three times per year, via the White Products Discharge Line (WPDL). At present the line has been removed from operational use for maintenance. Bulk ship fuel discharges using the WPDL are expected to recommence by the end of February 2012. “In the interim to ensure continued diesel supply to the community and our operations, fuel has been received via alternative delivery (weekly barges)

which is more expensive than via the WPDL. The last adjustment of the diesel fuel price included the extra freight costs due to the lack of the WPDL.” One concerned resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, contacted the Arafura Times saying that such a price hike was very hard to swallow and could have negative implications for their business. “To go up 30c a litre over night is ridiculous,” they said. Soon after the Arafura Times and local MLA Lynne Walker made enquiries to the RTA about the issue the price of diesel was lowered to the September price of $1.82 per litre. “In response it has been decided RTA Gove will absorb the additional freight costs presently being incurred,” the spokesperson said about readjusting the price. “We would expect to see a comparative decrease in price of diesel fuel in Nhulunbuy of approximately 23.97 cents. “Further, we will in effect subside fuel costs by an extra $0.1313 cents to the price of fuel we on-sell in recognition of the costs that the community has incurred since the increase in early October. The total reduction will decrease the price of diesel fuel in Nhulunbuy by approximately 37.10 cents per litre.” “As a company we (RTA) are committed to doing the right thing by the Nhulunbuy community in regard to access to competitively priced fuel.” The Arafura Times can also confirm that the BP Nhulunbuy has not been sold as has been speculated online.

Are your pets cyclone ready? PET owners in Nhulunbuy are being asked to think about their whole family this cyclone season - even the furry or feathered members of the clan. With the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a bumped cyclone season people are being warned to get ready. While most people prepare for a big-blow by having a cylcone survival kit ready and full of baked beans, beer, candles, water and a battery powered radio, many people forget to include supplies for their four-legged best friends. “Pets are part of the family too so you do need to think of them as well,” Bev Goodchild fom the Nhulunbuy RSPCA said. “Make sure you have enough tinned food ready for your animals and if you do need to evacuate and can’t take your pet with you then make sure they are locked up with enough food and water to do them until you can get back to them safely,” she said.

“Also if the house you are living in is not cyclone safe then find out now if you have a friend that can take you and your pets in an emergency. “The best advice is to be ready, have food and an evacuation plan ready for your animals just as you would do for yourself.” Pet owners also need to make sure their animals are registered and microchipped so that if they do run away they can be returned quickly and easily. A waterproof ID-tag is available for dogs and cats however Mrs Goodchild suggested that microchipping is the best option. “Microchipping is for life,” she said. “All an owner needs to remember is to change their address whenever they move and we can get them back to you.” New pet owners in town can contact the RSPCA to update their animal’s microchip details. The RSPCA is currenlty offering a $10 voucher to go

RSPCA president Bev Goodchild is ready for the cyclone season and has a kit prepared for her cat Finn. towards having animals microchipped. In the event of losing an animal people can call the RSPCA on 0437 526 502 or the NCL town rangers Dave on 0419 739 000 or Rick on 0417 391 507.

Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited

THE CONFUSION surrounding the so-called ‘Chesterfield Crossings’ has prompted the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited (NCL) to look at options that would further improve safety for the hundreds of children that use it every day. Currently there are conflicting ideas of what is expected of both motorists and pedestrians in the area surrounding the Nhulunbuy Primary School with even the Police and NCL unable to agree on what the rules of the road are. While the NCL are of the opinion that when the flags at the lower crossing, which is in front of the school on Chesterfield Circuit, are out then the children have the right of way, the Police have said pedestrians need to wait for a stop/go person to stop traffic before crossing as it is not a zebra crossing. To add to the confusion another set of pedestrian havens are located less than 100 meters up the road. This crossing is not patrolled by a stop/go person and according to the NCL a different set of road rules apply whereby motorists have right of way. NCL Town Administrator Ross Theedom has said that he was considering either completely removing this second set of pedestrian havens and replacing them with a pedestrian island in the centre of the road as one of the options to increase the safety of the area for the children that use them on a daily basis. Other options include

increasing signage, making more no-parking zones and running further education programs with the schools. “We just need to strengthen that area in terms of visibility and have people know what is expected of them,” Dr Theedom said. “I want to work with the community and am quite happy to get feedback on what they think should be done,” he said. Meanwhile Sergeant Rob Gordon said that regardless of what decision the NCL make they need to act quickly. “They need to go down there, have a look and sort it out,” Sergeant Gordon said. “This is an unbelievable situation that provides confusion for both pedestrians and drivers. “Motorists are smart enough to know what a zebra crossing is and they know that if they see someone at the side of the road they’ll stop.” “At the moment they are endorsing a situation that could be critical,” he said. Sergeant Gordon said that he was “quite alarmed” about the high number of speeding tickets that had been issued in the area around the school in recent months and that people needed to be more aware of the 40km zone which operates all day on school days between 7am and 5pm. “We are continuing to actively target it and have been all school term,” he said.

A splash of pink at the Golf Club By GRANT BANKS NOW in it’s 11th year the Pink Jacket Day at the Gove Country Golf Club was a roaring success. With 56 ladies braving the heat last Sunday for a fun day on the golf course event organiser Lee Peters was impressed with the turn out. “I was a little bit worried about holding it so late in the year with the weather really starting to warm up but we got 56 players which is great,” Mrs Peters said. “I have had a lot of ladies approaching me asking when it was going to be on again and I am so please with the roll-up,” she said. The aim of the day is two-fold. It raises money and awareness for breast cancer while also introducing the women in town to the game of golf. On the day the ladies play a best-ball or Ambrose team format with dice being rolled at the end of the day to determine a handicap. “This gives everyone a chance to win,” Mrs Peters said. In the end the winning team was ‘Fairy Floss’ but with only one Pink Jacket the team then entered into a ‘putt-off’ to determine whose name would be placed on the back of the hallowed jacket. With 50 or so spectators looking on Chavon Mullen showed nerves of steel to get her ball closest to the pin with the unconventional garden hose putter used in the decider. All round the crowd had a great time with colourful costumes and ear-to-ear smiles being worn by all.

Sprinkler ban lifted RIO Tinto Alcan has lifted the sprinkler ban that has been in place saying that water reserves were now back to the required level. “Thank you for your support in limiting your water usage to essential services during the sprinkler ban,” RTA representative Sherry Boyd said. “Your effort had a significant effect on increasing water levels to the minimum we require in our town water tanks.” Resident were reminded that in the absence of a sprinkler ban, sprinklers were only to be used between 5pm and 9pm every day.

The 56 ladies certainly added some colour to the course.

Held at the Bali Pavilion at the Arnhem Club a group of ten carers celebrated the much needed recognition that comes with Carer’s Week.

Fight for fishing access Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Senator Nigel Scullion and the Federal Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs will fight a bid by conservationists to close vast stretches of Territory coastal waters. “This idea by The Australian Marine Conservation Society to establish 12 “no-go no-take zones off the NT coast is just absurd, Senator Scullion said. “The green groups behind this push won’t stop until all waters are covered by no-go zones and they will destroy both recreational and the important commercial fishing industry “The Australian Marine Conservation Society spokesperson claims only one per cent of our waters are protected - that is wrong. “One hundred per cent of our waters are protected under a variety of acts such as the Northern Territory Marine Act, the Fisheries Act, the Maritime Safety Act as well

as acts on gas and oil mining in northern maritime waters. “There are already layers of protection, Senator Scullion said. At the last election, Natasha Griggs made it very clear that she supported Territory fisherman and their recreational habits. Her position has not changed and she vows to fight to protect fishing in the Northern Territory alongside her Senate colleague Nigel Scullion. “I don’t want the future of recreational fishing in the Territory to be the sacrificial lamb in any power deals between the Greens and Labor, Mrs Griggs said. “As a Territorian I do not want to see any threat to the enjoyment of recreational fishing in the Northern Territory - it is our way of life. “The Country Liberals promise to do all they can to protect fishing in the Northern Territory. “Territory tourism figures are already down for this year. We don’t need recreational fishing to suffer as

well, Mrs Griggs said. Senator Scullion agreed and asked the question “What are we protecting our waters from? “I think we need protection from green fundamentalists and their flawed ideas, Senator Scullion said. “The plan to make areas “nogo zones doesn’t work - it will concentrate fishing in other areas and make them unsustainable in the long run. “The Coalition’s policy at the last election was to put on hold, and then restructure, the Marine Bioregional Planning process and base Marine Protected Areas on science, not just a green take and plunder plan. “As a former commercial fisherman and recreational charter operator who used to make my living from the sea and still love to chuck in a line when I can, I will fight this tooth and nail, Senator Scullion said.

Local bowlers set for Darwin win

Team captian Charley Dargarville gets some practice in while the players watch on. Photo: GRANT BANKS

By GRANT BANKS THE third annual Gove versus Darwin Lawn Bowls Challenge is coming up this weekend and the Arnhemland Bowlers are ready and rearing to bring home the trophy. This year’s event is being held at the Darwin Bowling Club on Saturday and Sunday and having lost the challenge on home turf (or should I say carpet) last year all of the local players are keen to make amends. In all 14 players are heading over from Nhulunbuy, with one ring-in travelling from Cairns and three subs being offered by another of the Darwin clubs to make up the squad of 18. Of those coming into the team the three Darwin based players are all NT and Australian representatives. Even though the Arnhemland bowlers are aiming to take no prisioners on the green the overall mission is to have a good time. “The Darwin bowlers were here last year and they had an awesome time,” Arnhemland team captain Charley Dargarville said. “It’s our turn to go to them and

we are all looking forward to the weekend, it will be a lot of fun,” he said. One strategy the Gove bowlers are employing on their joint mission of having a ball while coming home victorious comes in the form of a less than conventional kit. “We play in sarongs,”Captain Dargarville said. “The first time they saw us do that they were completely dumbfounded because no team had ever played in sarongs before us,” he said. While this would only happen in the Territory the plan might just work. “You always see some of fuddyduddies looking at us and talking about the sarongs and that is just what we want,” Captain Dargarville said. “If we put them off then good, but we’ll be having fun all the same.” He said that after the competition a number of the Arnhemland bowlers will putting on a ‘performance’ that involves ‘see through’ sarongs. Town looks to post-Rio Tinto era Continued from page 1 And while the Gove Combined Unions were tight-lipped when approached by the Arafura Times for comment at a national level the AWU has raised concerns about the future of jobs in Nhulunbuy. Union secretary Paul Howes was reported in the NT News as saying he thought jobs and workers’ conditions should be the “top priority”. “We of course want to work co-operatively with the new owners of Rio Tinto’s aluminium assets, but we want to ensure our members’ rights and entitlements are protected,” he said. “We want to ensure that the conditions of workers at all of these sites are transferred across and that job security is guaranteed.” Local MP Lynne Walker shared these concerns adding that if a buyer is not found quickly then workers might suffer the consequences of the Gove operations being demoted to a second tier business for RTA. “I think the question people may have is that if the Gove operations are less profitable for RTA than its ‘tier 1’ assets, then how might a new owner do things differently,” she said. “Hence speculation from some people I’ve spoken with that cost savings might be found in cutting jobs.” Ms Walker said that during a meeting with senior executives from RTA, including newly appointed chief executive of Pacific Aluminium Sandeep Biswas, the future of both th Gove operations and the future of the community were discussed. “I sought and was given assurances that transition

to any new ownership, when it occurs, would see local stakeholders including employees, Traditional Owners, businesses and the wider community kept abreast of developments,” Mrs Walker said. “Assurances were also given that change of ownership in no way impacts upon the deals negotiated and struck through the recent 42 year lease renewals which is critical in seeing the opening up of land for much-needed housing. “However, I suspect some disappointment at a community level that stakeholders face the prospect of a third new owner in the space of just over 10 years. “Building relationships which are mutually rewarding and supportive between the mine and the community are important and take time,” she said. Further speculation surrounded where a prospective buyer might be found. “Given they have made so much noise about wanting to sell it sounds like they can’t find a buyer and so we probably wont see any change any time soon,” an RTA employee said. While others suggested that a buyer would be found in China or even that BHP may look to buy the Gove operations. MLA Lynne Walker was less concerned about the prospect of a buyer being found saying: “With continued and growing global demand for aluminium there’s no doubt a buyer will be found.” One member of the community the Arafura Times spoke to at the Walkabout Tavern summed it up perfectly: “I hope they find a buyer soon so we can just get on with it.”

Residents are advised that it is a requirement of the sub lease of their property that it be maintained in a clean, neat and tidy condition at all times. Thanks for career advice FOR the last two months the Middle Years students from Yirrkala School have been learning about careers and jobs in the local area. During our studies we visited work places in our community such as the Yirrkala clinic, Gove Airport, Fire Station, St John ambulance centre and the Delta Reef radio station building site in Nhulunbuy. We wish to thank these workplace for allowing us to visit and helping us to learn about their jobs. We learnt that all of these jobs need the workers to be able to use English and a computer. The workers also have to get to work on time and work for at least 8 hours each day. These visits were very helpful and informative for our studies. Your faithfully, Middle years students Yirrkala school

She answered members’ questions and will be available to update members at future meetings if requested.

Working bee helps to get our garden in order By Miss Courtney LAST Saturday 3O and 2L had a working bee for our garden project. The reason for this was to finish planting plants into all the tyres so that our garden looked the best it possibly could so we could enter it into the Rio Tinto and Nhulunbuy Corpora-

tion’s Gardening Competition. We had a great turnout with students and parents turning up from both classes and working in the hot sun to lend a hand. Miss Larsen and myself would like to say a big thank you to those students and parents and also for the many donations of soil that we received. Fingers

crossed that we win the category of ‘best children’s garden’. Also, we currently have these herbs and vegetable plants for sale for $2: Coriander, Chives, Capsicum, Cauliower, Lettuce, Tomatoes So get in quick before they disappear.

Your Lucky ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) You might be a little too full of yourself at the moment. You are good at organising the people around you. However you should do your best not to boss them around more than is absolutely necessary. Romance. This will be a good time for a few quiet evenings at home. Good communications will be absolutely essential this week. You must say what you mean and be as direct as possible about expressing your feelings.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 71 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

Don’t “accidentally” open a letter addressed to someone else. You may be so curious that you forget what you are doing. The person concerned won’t thank you for the intrusion. Romance. Your love-life will be having a short break at the moment. Your energy levels are high, so it won’t be too long before things start to pick up again.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You might be put in a difficult position by a friend. This person does not want to inconvenience you, but they may not realise the consequences of letting you down. Romance. Drop an issue which is not very important before it creates tension between you and your partner. If you persist you could end up in an argument which is difficult to get out of.

Romance. A powerful aspect to Saturn will help to ground you thoughts in reality. You need to take account of a recent change in your relationship, and adapt to it.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A mistake made by a friend may inconvenience you. If you are going to have to depend on this person again make sure that they are very clear about your feelings about this matter. Romance. Your partner will appreciate a small present, especially if it is something which you cannot normally afford to buy.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A favourable aspect to Mars will help you to be a little more assertive than usual this week. Romance. Someone you have been admiring from afar will suddenly take an interest in you. This person won’t take “no” for an answer! The more time you spend together the more you will grow to like them.

Lesson 2: The Golf Doctor helps you to get a grip In the game of golf the only point of contact with your club is your hands. For this reason having a good grip is of vital importance. There are three choices of grip you can use. Local golf pro Andrew Bridge, also known as the Golf Doctor, can be found at the Gove Country Club.

The Interlocking grip - To use the Interlock grip, take the little finger on the trailing hand (the trailing hand for right-handed golfers is the right hand) and intertwine it with the index finger on the lead hand. The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand.

The Baseball or Ten Finger grip - To position your hands properly using a Ten Finger grip, start with a perfect lead hand grip, then place the little finger of the trailing hand close against the index finger of the lead hand. Cover the lead hand thumb with the lifeline of the trailing hand. The Baseball or Ten Finger grip.

The Overlapping Grip is the most common grip - To set up on the handle using the Overlapping Grip, take the little finger on the trailing hand and place it between the index and middle finger on the lead hand.

SLSC at home in Yirrkala IN AN Australian first a Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) has been established at Yirrkala. This is the first and only SLSC in an indigenous community and given the weekly attendance it stands to be a huge success. Even though the official Surf Life Saving season has ended here in the tropics due to the impending stinger season the kids at Walngawu Djakamirri SLSC are still turning up in large numbers. As a result Scott Beverstock and Ariana Tutini, both of Miwatj Health, can be found at Shady Beach every Sunday running a range of sports including beach volleyball, beach cricket, soccer, flag races and beach sprints. “Even though it’s flags down time we’ll be keeping the momentum going by holding activities that aren’t water based,” Mr Beverstock said. “One of our big goals is to get some of them into the NT rep side so we want to get the kids doing the beach sprints and flag races so we can get them comp ready for next year,” he said. Another of the reason for establishing the club is to give the children of the local area an other option for keeping fit and healthy. Regardless of age or body-size the kids can get invloved unlike some sports like football where smaller kids can be disadvantaged. Teaching general healthy lifestyles including, diet and fitness are core to the clubs values .The serious work of lifesaving, rescuing people in difficulty and resuscitation is mixed with a range of events to promote skill and fitness - essential for anyone trying to rescue someone in danger of drowning. The club is strongly supported by Surf Life Saving NT, the Gove Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club at Nhulunbuy, local schools and Miwatj Health - a non government health organisation specialising in indigenous health and lifestyle programs. This year the club has attracted around 40 Nippers junior lifesavers aged 7-14, while more senior members provide water safety for those at Surf Club activities and members of the community who come to swim at Shady Beach on Sundays. Surf Life Saving Northern Territoy (SLSNT)

CEO Tony Snelling said the local youth had shown extraordinary enthusiasm for the program and had developed excellent self-survival and rescue skills. He said this was particularly important as most of the students were proud to be ‘saltwater people’ and spent considerable time around the coast and in the water but becoming a lifesaver wasn’t easy. “Gaining a surf lifesaving qualification is hard work - everyone has to meet a set of stringent swimming and fitness standards with strict time limits enforced,” Mr Snelling said. “There are knowledge-based activities where students study anatomy and physiology and surf conditions such as rips, currents, tides and different types of beaches. “A practical knowledge of first aid is essential and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, has to be mastered. The members also learn to provide oxygen therapy and become familiar with heart defibrillation units and radio communications.” “In the water, where the students have learned how to rescue others with rescue tubes and rescue boards, the most difficult situation was bringing an unconscious patient to shore - a physically demanding task even for an experienced lifesaver.” Mr Snelling said physical fitness and sport were important elements of the lifesaving program so at the end of each day’s training the students participated in a variety of events, including beach volleyball, relay races, beach flags and the famous ironman event. “The involvement of Miwatj Health has been a major boost to ensure the club continues building up resources in the community, developing expertise in young leaders - both male and female, and fostering a strong spirit of volunteerism within a culture that values physical fitness and a safety culture. “The sustainability of the project is closely tied to the formation of the surf life saving club at Yirrkala and there are some great opportunities for community members to become involved. “I firmly believe the opportunity to develop a surf life saving club at Yirrkala will provide a positive, healthy focus for local residents and youth in particular.”

Rugby boys come home as winners

WHILE in the East Arnhem footy is usually thought of as Aussie Rules a strong contigent of Schoolboys Rugby Union 7s players have shown this in not a one code region by winning an NT championship title. Four teams made up from students from all over East Arnhem where taken to Darwin for the carnival with one team entered in the Under 16s while three in the Senior Boys Under 18s class. The U18s boys were undefeated throughout the carnival and came home as NT Senior School Boys Division Champions. Showing the strength of Rugby 7s in East Arnhem the U18s second side came third while the thirds came fourth in the compeition. Interestingly the U18s thirds were in-fact an U16s side that was promoted to the U18s division becasue of their strength and speed for thier age.

East Arnhem U18s coach Eddie Mulholland believes the boys would have had an excellent opportunity to win the U16s class but said they were promoted willingly to help make up numbers in the senior division and did well to come fourth. The U16s side came second overall and were narrowly defeated in the final. This was the first time that a combined East Arnhem Schools squad was taken to the event. Mr Mullholand said that since 2007 rugby union has taken off in the area with some tallented youngsters being produced. “We have had eight boys represent the Territory in the Lloyd McDermot all Indigenous compeition,” he said. “Also there have been a couple from the region represent NT and make the National 7s side.”

BMX titles success

By DONNA-MARIE GRIEVE THE NT State BMX Titles were just recently held here in our local town Nhulunbuy (which only happens once every 4 years). It commence with first open track training on Monday the 3rd of October going all week and finishing off with the 20 inch on Saturday night the of October 8. It was an event not to be missed with hot action all week on our well manicured track. The main event for the Sprockets (4 to 7 year olds) was held on Friday night, this was combined with the Cruiser section which is the 24 inch bike. The night was packed with excited little children all keen to get out on the track and show their families there competitive spirit. Some of the children could hardly reach the ground, but could they ride!!! Watch out in a few years for some of these riders as there was a lot of talent out there, especially representing our Club. We had 9 young riders in this age group and they all should be very proud of their effort, they were awesome to watch and their attitude was brilliant. The Cruiser Section (8 years to 30+ plus Women and Men) was full of some very exciting moves and manoeuvres to make their way through the pack to come over the line in 1st place. As there are only 8 NT Plates up for grabs in each category, so there were a few spills and misjudgements on taking the right line. But to our relief no broken bones, which is a first for a State Titles. The other Main event was the Age Riders (8 years and up) on the 20 inch bikes on the Saturday night. This is where the boys and girls are pumping with adrenalin and it showed on their faces as they pass their families and supporters lining the fence through to the finish line. The crowd was shouting out with heaps of encouragement for all riders. The atmosphere was brilliant and the riders spectacular to watch, as they flew over the doubles coming out the berms with the skill of a ballerina. They knew it was now to put all that training into reality and try to get the lead and to keep it. So they could have the bragging rights of being the top eight in their age group in the NT. All our riders showed great racing skills and really took it to the visiting riders, I was proud of all of them; they all deserve to be number 1. We managed to get three NT 1 plate

holders, which was a great achievement. They were Tim Baxter, Chloe Grieve and Charli Leahy all taking out there Age Groups, well done. We had four NT 2 Plate Holders, Megan Donovan, Josh Leahy, Reagan Roath and Laurence Tankard. Then we had three NT 3 Plate Holders, Jordina Grieve, James Miegel and Alex Donovan. We also manage to get quite number of NT 4’s, NT 5’s, NT 6’s, NT 7’s and NT 8’s. You should be proud of your efforts and especially to the children that just missed out on getting a Plate, you guys were awesome. We also had four riders this year who qualified for the Dynamites. Chloe Grieve (12 year Champion), Josh Leahy (runner up 11 Year old), Megan Donovan (runner -up 10 Year old) and Dean Peirce (third in the 10 year olds) They all have been invited to represent not only Gove but the Northern Territory (which is an honour in itself) in their age group at the National Dynamite Series. The National Dynamite series is an initiative by BMX Australia and the States for riders who compete in their State series and qualify for the National final of the Dynamite series at the 2012 National championships, these riders have to be the best three in their State and they are chosen at their State Titles, they also have to be aged from 11 to 13 years old. This series showcase the best riders from all around Australia, competing at the nationals for the chance to be BMX Australia National Dynamite series champion and encourages the riders to take the step up into the probikx/champbikx series when they are older. Thank you to all our Sponsors, Volunteers, Riders and families and the community of Gove we would not have been able to run an event like this without all your support, it was much appreciated. The Nhulunbuy BMX Club was formed in 1983 and is still going strongly with a dedicated team of Volunteers. We race on Friday nights, gates dropped at 7pm, the season is nearly at a close with the weather warming up and the wet season upon us, we will cover the track to begin again in April/ May 2012. If you would like any further information just give us a ring Donna Leahy on 0424954600 or Donna-Marie on 0438175013.
