Surf Club suffers another blow

Outgoing president of the Gove Peninsula Surf Club at the door that was broken off for access to the cold room. PHOTO: MARJO HALLOWELL By MARJO HALLOWELL AS if losing all their emergency equipment in a fire earlier this month was not a big enough set back for the Gove Peninsula Surf Club now there has been a robbery. The break in occurred between Wednesday night 6pm and sometime on Thursday morning. Alcohol valued at $2500 was stolen. Police said investigations were continuing and they were trying to locate three suspects they wish to question. They are also calling for members of the public who may have seen any suspicious activity to contact them. Entry was gained through the cold room door which was broken it off its hinges.

Outgoing club president Chris Putland said he could not believe someone would hit the club while it was down. “They took all the expensive type of cans - the pre mix spirits,” he said. “Community support has been fantastic, especially since the fire, and we can’t believe anyone would be so low as to do this now. “The bar is a constant source of fundraising and they had obviously taken advantage of the power having been disconnected for the demolition last week.” The club is moving forward as the building that burnt a fortnight ago was demolished and the slate is clean for the replacement to start. as a crew from Kowhai Constructions sifted through the rubbish and removed it under the watchful eye of the insurance assessor who was taking notes for the contents component of the insurance policy. The stench was rife as freezer contents were the first to be removed. Following that the burnt smell filled the nostrils even though protective masks were worn by the crew. All was complete by the end of the week with the exception of some steel girders which still need to be removed. On Sunday the club held their 41st AGM and the main focus was getting Gove’s oldest club operational by the start of the season. Mr Putland told the 50 or more members at

Other clubs had also offered some assistance as had the Territory and national surf life saving organisations. “We may have been moved three steps back but we will continue to move forward,” Mr Putland said. Two new citizens in Gove THERE are two new Australia citizens in Gove as a mother and daughter took the pledge last Friday. Olga Postans and her daughter Yulia Ipatyeva took their oaths at the offices of the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited before the town administrator Dr Ross Theedom. Olga is married to George Postans after the couple met online. They met in person in Bangkok five and a half years ago as it was halfway between Gove and her home in Siberia. George went to Siberia for a holiday before proposing to Olga. The ceremony was an added birthday present for Yulia who also celebrated her 20th birthday on Friday. She is a university student and is studying business studies and Japanese. She is heading to Kyota for six months to further her studies this year. Olga said it had been a little difficult to adjust from an area with 800,000 people to the isolation of Gove and it took her a couple of years to adjust to the climate but now feels it would be harder to return to the harsh climate in Siberia.

Mobile phone numbers will not be made public - ACMA THE communications industry watchdog ACMA has warned consumers that the viral email warning that ‘mobile numbers will be made public’ is a hoax. The email started circulating around Australia in 2009 and tells consumers that mobile numbers will shortly be made public and that you will be charged for telemarketing calls that you receive. Although the message refers to the Australian Do Not Call Register, the email appears to have originated from North America a number of years ago. The reference to being charged for receiving calls arises from a different charging regime in the USA where mobile phone users are often charged for calls that they receive. This charging regime does

not apply in Australia. The Do Not Call Register provides Australians with the ability to opt out of receiving most unsolicited telemarketing calls, and marketing faxes. Australians can put their telephone or fax numbers on the Do Not Call Register at www.donotcall. gov.au or by calling 1300 792 958. The Australian Do Not Call Register has strong mechanisms to protect the privacy of registrants. Telemarketers and Fax marketers are only able to check whether a telephone number they wish to call or fax is registered or not. Registered numbers are never directly provided. Telemarketers and Fax marketers that make calls or send faxes to numbers on the Do Not Call Register face significant financial penalties.

Dogs causing concerns DOG owners are reminded to ensure their animals are registered with he Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited. Dogs have recently intimidated pedestrians and residents are reminded to remain ever vigilant when out walking as there are still packs of dingoes roaming around the region. Rick Stephen, the compliance officer with the NCL, said several dingoes had been shot at the rubbish tip. “We will continue to bait and

trap them but it is not just wild dogs that are casuing concern around town. “We will follow up complaints and have recently had a woman with three children confronted on a pathway. A young girl of six was also chased by the same two dogs. “Some dog owners seem to think they can continue getting away without registering dogs but we will issue infringement notices. “We will prosecute and issue fines until people take responsibility for their animals,” he said.

Woman ordered to pay restitution A WOMAN, 52, pleaded guilty to stealing a bank card and seven counts of stealing money when she appeared at Nhulunbuy Magistrates Court on November 7. The woman appeared before Magistrate Hilary Hannam and admitted to stealing $2888.99 between September 10 and 12. She was sentenced on Wednesday and placed on a 12 month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $2878 in restitution.

Rotary inducts two members

THE Nhulunbuy Rotary Club held a progressive dinner on Saturday night with guests and members having a most enjoyable evening. At the dinner two new members were inducted as Rotarians. Leanne and Peno Parise have been attending Rotary since September and taking an active part in the fundraising activities. They were the hosts for the main course where the guests were treated to a sit down meal. Neither Leanne or Peno knew the inductions were to take place that evening and it came as somewhat of a pleasant surprise. Club president Barry Scott welcomed the couple and encouraged others at the dinner to consider the club as a possible way of supporting the community and Rotary International. Both Leanne and Peno have a history in community service with Peno being associated in the bush fire brigade and Leanne having been a member of Innnerwheel in Innisfail before moving to Gove late last year. They said they joined Rotary as they could see it as a means of helping the community by committing to the local club. The dinner was held as a social gathering of like minded people and was hosted by local Rotarians.

Woolies’ big boost for kids’ ward

Dog no excuse to evade police

A 28-YEAR-OLD electrician who used the excuse of wanting to make sure his dog was home safely pleaded guilty to high range drink driving and failing to comply with police directions. He was fined $1400 and disqualified from driving for 12 months. On January 8 this year a concerned member of the public called police and stated ‘He is going to kill someone’ when describing to them the manner in which the man was driving. Police had to take evasive action when they were driving towards him as he was swerving all over Melville Bay Road. The man had been at a waterhole drinking rum and at 4.40pm he drove into Nhulunbuy. He was seen 800m from the Chippis Road intersection veering across the outbound lane when police had to take the evasive action. They turned around and followed him with their lights flashing but he did not stop until he pulled into a house in Chippis Road. Police asked him if he had been drinking and he responded ‘I’m done. Rum. I’m done.’. He was taken to the police station and his alcohol content was 0.248 per cent. Four references were produced by his solicitor, Tom Sylvester, who said his client had been drinking with friends and made a regrettable mistake. He had no criminal history and had already lost his job. “He knew he was in trouble. The reason he continued was he was concerned about his dog on the tray of the vehicle. He wanted to get the dog home safe and sound so it would have water. He was not being evasive,” Mr Sylvester said. Mr Sylvester asked that no conviction be recorded as his client wanted to remain in Gove and a conviction would hinder his job prospects. Magistrate Hillary Hannam rejected the request and fined him $700 on each offence and $40 levy on each. He was also disqualified from driving for 12 and Ms Hannam made it clear that if he did drive he risked going to gaol. Judy Miegel, Jarrod Ferguson, Cara Emmerton, Bev Wheeler at the presentation in kids’ ward. REPRESENTATIVES from Woolworths in Gove presented the children’s ward of the hospital a cheque for more than $7000 last week. Funds were initially raised as part of the community fundraising conducted by the Woolworths staff during the Kids Fresh Future Appeal but manager Marian Adams and community coordinator Bev Wheeler decided not to be restricted by the time constraints of the Appeal. They got approval to keep the funds they raised for the children’s ward of the Gove District Hospital (GDH) and both agreed that made the fundraising easier.

“Customers have really supported all the raffles and activities we have undertaken to raise these funds for the kids,” said Ms Adams. “Bev has been fantastic in organising the raffles, sausage sizzles and market stalls. “Mrs Wheeler said the staff had really got behind the fund raising giving up their time to help at special events during the year. “We were set a target of $6000 by the hospital to provide outdoor play equipment for the kids and we have passed that goal. This cheque for $7086.25 is just the beginning as we are already working towards this year’s contribution. It is very

rewarding to be able to help out the kids in hospital.” The funds raised during the appeal traditionally go towards children’s hospitals and this is the first year they have been raised for the GDH. Doug Gilchrist from the GDH said he was very thankful for the generosity of the people of Gove and for the management and staff at Woolworths for their great efforts. “This will be great for the children that are not restricted to their beds and it has easy access from the children’s ward. I’m sure they’ll get a great deal of pleasure from the new play equipment.” he said.

Luke dreads the shave for good reason

Luke Hutchinson with his daughters Jordin, 10, Layla, 3, and Fray, 2.

AFTER eight years a man will be losing his dreadlocks in the Shave For A Cure campaign. Luke Hutchinson, 26, said he had not had his hair cut for eight years and was a little concerned what his three daughters would think when they finally see him without his hair. “Two of them have never seen me without them,” he said. Luke will be having his head shaved on March 16 at the Gove Peninsula Surf Club where he had been a nipper since he was three years old. “I did set a target of $5000 but as I already have more than $4000 already I will be increasing my target. “The Leukaemia Foundation is a very worthwhile cause and I am happy to be able to raise money on their behalf.” Go to www.worldsgreatestshave and search for Luke Hutchinson to donate.

Man gives girls a lift while drunk A 22-YEAR-OLD man who was unrepresented at Nhulunbuy Magistrates Court pleaded guilty to driving while drunk and was fined $350, disqualified for six months and ordered to pay a levy of $40. The driver was stopped at 3.18am

and had three female and one male passengers and said he was just giving the girls a lift. He said he did not have any excuse for drinking and driving but had been pacing himself and was not aware he was over the limit. Alilah Watts makes sure she has her regisitration sticker on her boat before the clean up this weekend. By MARJO HALLOWELL THE Gove Boat Club (GBC) has registered as an official site as part of Clean Up Australia Day. March 4 will see Australians across the country cleaning up as part of this national campaign that started as Clean Up Sydney Harbour in 1989. As part of the Clean Up in Gove any dinghies or tinnies or equipment left on the beachfront near the boat club will be removed and scrapped unless it is owned by a full member of the club and registered with them. Registration is free with full membership and current members can collect their registration sticker during club opening hours. stickers must be visible on the outside stern of the boats. The GBC is committed to cleaning up its lease area to supply a cleaner, safer beachfront for all. They welcome any assistance from members of

the public, especially those who may have left their unwanted or unused dinghies on the beach. Yachtsman Ian Kiernan was so disgusted at the state of some of the world’s harbours he visited in an around the world race in 1987 that in 1989 he decided to clean up his own backyard, Sydney Harbour. That clean-up saw 40,000 people cleaning up around the harbour and the following year Clean Up Australia kept the environmental message alive as 300,000 people joined in. In 1993 with United Nations Environment Approval Clean Up The World was started. Today 120 countries take part with 35 million participants. Since its inception the bulk of the materials, 33.3 per cent, have been plastics with 16.8 per cent papers, 14.5 per cent metals and 12.9 per cent glass. The official schools Clean Up Australia Day is Friday, March 2.

DIGITAL television was expected in Gove in 2013 but this has now been brought forward. Community liaison officer at the Nhulunbuy Corporation Ace Rabukawaqa said they had decided not to wait for the Government process which would see Nhulunbuy at the end of the list of places to get the technology. “The installation will start in May and we expect to be up and running by June, he said. “This represents an investment of $110,000 with $40,000 or that coming from SBS and the other $70,000 from the Corporation. “We just want to let the public know that we will be up and running by June and that they need to ensure they have the correct equipment for the changeover. Town Administrator Dr Ross Theedom said he had advised major retailers in Darwin that there could be a rush on digital set top boxes. “We alerted Harvey Norman, Retravision, Beta Electrical and The Good Guys so they would have enough stock for people from Nhulunbuy, Dr Theedom said. “We are also investigating the viability of getting digital out to the communities as well at this stage it will only cover Nhulunbuy, he said. “As well as the four free to air stations available on analogue, there will be at least 10 additional channels available, Mr Rabukawaqa said. “Most people would have dual aerials but they need to check to ensure they will receive digital transmissions. For further information visit www.digitalready.gov.au

$130,000 kava haul over one weekend THREE men will appear in court following two separate kava seizures near the remote community of Bulman. Bulman Police witnessed a car being driven suspiciously along the Central Arnhem Road at around 10.30 pm on Saturday February 18. Acting sergeant Leighton Arnott said the Subaru, containing five people, was stopped approximately six kilometres north west of the Bulman community. “A search warrant was executed on the vehicle during which police located five g of cannabis, a bottle of rum, more than four litres of wine and 38.36kg of kava in 1001 separate deal bags,” he said. “The 51-year-old driver was charged with possessing cannabis in a public place, unlawfully supplying cannabis to another and possessing/supplying a commercial quantity of kava. He was bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on April 2.” Just 14 hours later police witnessed another suspicious vehicle approximately 32km south west of Bulman community. “A Nissan Patrol was stopped and searched, locating 41.3kg of kava in 2043 separate deal bags,” Sgt Arnott said. “The 62-year-old male driver and a 30-year-old male passenger were both charged with possessing/ supplying a commercial quantity of kava and were bailed to appear in the Maningrida Court on April 4. “The kava seized in these two incidents could have reached up to $131,000 if sold in remote communities. This was a great result for local members and once again shows our no nonsense approach to drug offenders.”

Officer in charge of Alyangula Police Station senior sergeant Tony Deutrom said the 38-yearold man, his wife and a dog were first reported missingon Thursday night. “Police were informed at about 7.20pm that a man, woman and a dog in a dinghy were in trouble near Flat Rock, approximately one kilometre off the beach,” Snr sgt Deutrom said. “Fisherman in the area at the time heard their calls for help, however were unable to assist. “Police searched for the vessel late into the night without success and recommenced the search at first light. “Police were in the process of coordinating a sea and air search on Friday morning when we were told the missing pair had swum ashore.” Snr sgt Deutrom said the couple set off on Thursday afternoon in a 15ft dinghy but due to bad weather and a lack of fuel they were unable to return to shore. He said those venturing out to sea should follow basic marine safety rules. “I can’t stress enough the importance of taking water safety seriously,” he said. “When setting off, tell people where you’re heading. Take enough food, water and fuel to last you for several days. “Take the appropriate safety equipment including EPIRBS and always check the weather and tides before leaving your house.” The 38-year-old man was summonsed to appear at Alyangula Magistrates Court for failing to maintain essential marine safety equipment on his recreational vessel. Revamp for op shop completed THE Nhulunbuy Neighbourhood Community Centre charity shop has undergone some changes and is now re-open again for business. Centre manager Rebecca Cran said the major change was to relocate the clothing racks along the outer walls and new shelving was installed in the centre. “One major difference is that prams can now negotiate the aisles and everything is now much more visible,” she said. “We really appreciate the donation of the shelving and glass cabinet by Darryl Stewart from the pharmacy. “It makes the shop look so much cleaner and tidier. We are still holding

our special $1 days and always welcome donations of clothing, household items and furniture.” Ms Cran said the furniture was generally stored in a shed but photos were available in the shop. Tom Niven had done the welding and Marrion Niven is the team leader in the shop. The shop, at the front of the centre, is open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 2.30pm. Volunteers are being encouraged to come along to help out so they can open on a Saturday morning. Ms Cran said she was drawing up a roster and was keen to hear from anyone who could help out

once a month. Proceeds from the shop go towards the running of the centre and the children’s programme of after school and vacation care as well as playground equipment. The centre is used by a variety of groups including the Australian Breast Feeding Association every second Monday, Maternal Health on Tuesdays and Ninjutsu Martial Arts on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The next project is to enclose the shop area and that is what they are currently raising funds for. For further information or to volunteer your services contact 8987 2191.

Continued warnings after Ross River Fever reported in Gove NHULUNBUY residents and visitors are being urged to protect themselves against mosquitoes after a number of cases of Ross River Virus (RRV) have been reported. Two cases were reported in December with a further seven in January but none were reported this month. RRV is a debilitating tropical, mosquito borne disease. Murray Valley encephalitis and Kunjin virus is also of concern after chickens in the sentinel detection flock in the Katherine region indicated widespread infestations. The flock are tested in liaison with the Berrimah Veterinary Laboratory and this finding, combined with similar recent Murray Valley encephalitis activity in sentinel chickens in northern WA, highlights the presence of the viruses and the consequent need for all proper precautions to be taken. “The main mosquitoes that transmit Murray Valley encephalitis are the common banded mosquito and the floodwater mosquito,” Centre for Disease Control Director, Dr Vicki Krause said. “The common banded and the floodwater mosquitoes mainly breed in grassy depressions and sewage ponds. To avoid mosquito borne disease, residents are urged to use personal protection, and to avoid outdoor exposure around flooded areas - especially after sundown between now and the end of July.” Dr Krause stressed the seriousness of Murray Valley encephalitis, saying that symptoms can include severe headache, high fever, drowsiness, tremor, seizures (especially in young children), and in some cases the disease progresses to delirium, coma, permanent brain damage or death. “In young children, fever might be an early sign. If the child also has drowsiness, floppiness, poor feeding or general distress, parents should consult a doctor.” To minimise mosquito problems in Nhulunbuy you should: ensure children are adequately protected against mosquito bites; avoid outdoor exposure around dusk, and at night, near rivers and areas of dense vegetation as well as other areas of high mosquito activity; consider bifenthrin insecticide barrier treatments by pest control companies for use around residential grounds; use mosquito proof accommodation and camping facilities at night; wear protective light coloured clothing with long sleeves, long trousers, and ankle protection with socks, between dusk and dawn in areas where mosquito bites are likely; use a protective repellent containing 20 per cent DEET or Picaridin and other mosquito protection devices as a supplement to protective clothing when out doors at night in areas of mosquito activity. Residents are reminded that in order to stop mosquitoes breeding around the home it is recommended you regularly empty or remove drain plugs from all containers that hold water. This included maintenance of gutters, gardens, wading pools, empty pot plants and boats.

New life members announced at the surf club

Steve and Dee Castelli were both acknowledged as life members of the surf club.

LIFE membership to the Gove Peninsula Surf Lifesaving Club is not handed out freely and at the AGM last weekend four people were recognised for their contribution to the club. Outgoing president Chris Putland said the life memberships were awarded to members who had been actively involved within the club for more than 15 years and in such an itinerant population. They will not receive their awards until later in the year but they were recognised for the work they had already done. Debbie Webb first joined in 1990 and had served in many positions including registrar, barbecue coordinator, age manager, and junior coordinator. Mr Putland said it was through her organisational skills the Friday night barbecues became a weekly event as she set up regular rosters . She had built up resources including a well fitted out kitchen. Her focus was on the kids and just made thing happen. Bernie Whelan joined in 1996. She is currently the

chief instructor and has been an age manager and SLSCNT representative as well as serving on the Stinger Advisory Board. Mr Putland said he had four full pages listing all her awards and in 2010 she was made a life member with SLSCNT. “Whenever there is a job to be done she just gets in and does it,” he said. DeeAnne Castelli joined in 1996 and has also held many positions including barbecue coordinator, age manager and assistant training officer. She works as an official and has many patrol hours every year. “She makes great scones and is also great with a paint brush,” Mr Putland said. The fourth, and by no means the lest, was Steve Castelli. “He has served as a trainer and assessor and has served many, many hours on patrol, including after hours.” Mr Castelli responded for himself and wife Dee and said: “We are gob-smacked . This is a great honour. There are plenty of others in the club that are also deserving of this award.”

 letters to the editor Leadership tussle a soap opera

For those who fought at Darwin The commemorations of the Japanese bombings on Darwin during WWII were held in Darwin on February 19. Some residents from Gove went to Darwin to join in the memorial. Andrew Guild decided to write a poem to remember the event. For Those Who Fought at Darwin [Written for the anniversary of the attack upon Darwin during the Second World War] By Andrew Guild. ‘Twas on the 19th of February ‘42 that the deadly Japanese struck Catching our soldiers unawares, poor Darwin was out of luck. Planes with red discs bombed and strafed, killing military and civilian alike. Sinking defenceless ships in the harbour, and at the city itself they did strike. Our daring young men ran to their guns to shoot at the Japs with their flak, to knock down those planes right out of the sky who had dared to come and attack Over a few weeks, the Japs returned, and served it to us quite rough. But the Aussies determinedly fought back and showed that they, too, were tough. Later on, in New Guinea we met but this time we bloodied their nose. And, fighting the Japs on a battlefield green, the legend of Kokoda arose. We remember the brave men of Darwin, those who bled for us, in forty-two, To our heroes of the North who fought and died, we offer a heart-felt salute to you.

Electoral News

by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER

THE leadership tussle in the Federal Labor caucus last week unfolded as something akin to a soap opera dominating news headlines for most of the week and I’ve no doubt people are pleased that it’s all over with resounding support for Prime Minister Julia Gillard winning the ballot 71 to 31. With that settled, Ms Gillard now needs to be allowed get on with the job of running the country with

the united support of her caucus and continuing with the Government’s important agenda to keep the economy buoyant as well as continuing to deliver reforms in the key areas like health and education. A tough job in minority government. AMID this background the Territory parliament sat last week with important bills introduced and policy debated on a raft of matters but disappointingly, it was bad behaviour - and in particular, bad language - which grabbed the local media attention. I happened to be in the chair as Deputy Speaker when a member of the opposition labelled a government member as ‘sexist and racist’. While there is a certain amount of latitude for name-calling - same as there

was in the classroom when I was a teacher - there has to be some boundaries and a line drawn in the sand. I’M sure Queenslanders are also pleased that their attention on an upcoming state election can now resume with the poll scheduled for March 24. This is also the date for local government elections in the Territory which includes, of course, candidates for the nearly four year old shires. Nominations for candidates close at midday on Thursday March 1. I thank the elected members of the East Arnhem Shire, including senior Yirrkala man and EAS President, Banambi Wunugmurra, for their service and offer encouragement to all those nominating or re-nominating for the elections on March 24.

You have been in Gove too long... A regular visitor to Gove has enjoyed Shelly Tonkin’s observations in ‘You know you’ve been in Gove too long’ and Terry Verrall has a few thoughts of his own. When away from Gove * People ask “Is Nhulunbuy near Cairns or Brisbane?” * Mazda, Kia and Audi are types of car makes - and yes there is more than one

model - really! * People (nearly 99.9 per cent) don’t go to work in orange, blue or yellow. Honestly! * Six cars coming towards you and three cars behind is not a traffic jam. * There are roads that let two cars go the same way at the same time. Some even let three cars go the same way at the same time.

Walkabout renos officially opened THE Walkabout hosted their official opening on the weekend. The opening was on Friday night followed by a day of specials on the Saturday with the ‘back of the truck’ sale offering customers bargains to mark the occasion. Owners of the Walkabout John and Leah Tourish welcomed guests, including representatives from their suppliers, and friends from as far away as Canberra. The Walkabout had undergone many renovations over the last few months with the Flinders Sports Bar opening up for business in September, followed by The Nhulun Bar in November and the bottle

shop in December. The Thirsty Camel signs are now all in place and the night club has also reopened. The celebrations on the weekend marked the completion of all work with the exception of the sealed parking area which will need to wait until the dry season to be completed. Mr Tourish said he hoped their customers were not inconvenienced too much by all the work that was done but now he felt they had much better facilities for all parts of the community. “It was great to see all the suppliers come over and support the event,” he said. “I hope they all had a great time.”

Skinnyfish Music wins Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award

THE Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards winners were announced on Monday, February 20 and Darwin based record company Skinnyfish Music has won the Facilitator’s Prize for its dedication to promoting the music of Indigenous Australians. Skinnyfish Music Managing Director Mark Grose said ,”When I received the phone call all I heard was Myer-Foundation-successful-award and all I could think of was which of our artists had won? When I realised that it was in fact an award to Skinnyfish Music I genuinely didn’t know what to say and my first reaction was what project could do with an extra financial boost? “The award is important to us as it is recognition that what we are doing is significant and something that contributes to a greater outcome than the financial bottom line of a company.” “We always get really excited when one of the artists we work with gets acknowledged and I love to sing from the rafters about it! In this case I feel completely humbled by the recognition and especially thankful to the people that submitted the nomination.” Gurrumal from Elcho Island is just one of the artists represented by Skinnyfish Music which is a Darwinbased company which records and promotes the work of Indigenous musicians. The fundamental philosophy behind Skinnyfish is to empower Indigenous Australians to generate and pursue their own creative and economic activity. Established 14 years ago by Mark Grose and Michael Hohnen the creative director Skinnyfish Music works in partnership with artists and their communities to produce music and take it to the wider world. The company’s aim is to provide opportunities while nurturing the talents of artists from communities across Australia, including the region from Timor to Tasmania - through recording, distribution, publishing and performance. Skinnyfish Music recognises the value of music for its beauty and ability to bring people together to affect positive change in people and entire communities; its role in recording and preserving language; and its expression of traditional and modern culture. Through the highest level of artistic endeavour and quality production, Skinnyfish is committed to presenting the music from indigenous Australia to national and international audiences. As music is increasingly recognised as a vehicle for communication and engagement, Skinnyfish has a strong emphasis on training and community development projects in the homelands of its artists. Through special projects such as song-writing workshops, video clip production and performance, important messages about health, education and well being are conveyed through music. These projects form an essential part of Skinnyfish Music’s belief that music can be used as an agent for change in remote communities. Skinnyfish is committed to building long term relationships with musicians their families and communities and connecting with Australian and international artists, private organisations, government departments and many other associations which have significant influence on indigenous communities. Skinnyfish Music strives to maximise the positive impact that music can have on people’s lives while providing a window to the world that highlights the richness of indigenous Australian culture. Actor, comedian, composer Eddie Perfect has taken out the Individual Award of the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards, while groundbreaking Adelaide children’s theatre company Windmill Theatre has been recognised with the Group Award.

Your Lucky

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

Once you have started a new project nobody will be able to stop you! Your momentum will help you to push through a barrier which has stopped other people in their tracks. Romance. Your partner may find it hard to cope with all your excess energy! A powerful aspect to Mars later in the week could make you a little tense: do your best to use your excess energy constructively.

Be careful not to get stuck in a rut. A decision which you have been putting off for the last few weeks may be preventing you from taking the next step in your life. Romance. You will find out soon enough whether a new admirer is going to stay the course. In the meantime, just enjoy all the extra attention you are getting!

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

A few negative comments this week may sap your confidence for a while. You need to take the remarks in context, however, and not overreact. Romance. A person whom you have known for some time may still be interested in you. They will do their best to pretend not to be interested, but their actions will give them away.

Most aspects of your life are in good shape at the moment, but one area needs some urgent attention. Time spent away from home will give you a chance to see everything in perspective. Romance. An unkind comment by your partner may have contributed to your worries. You have to find out what was behind this immediately.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

Be careful that problems at work don’t spill over into your home-life. So long as you try hard to be patient, everything will be resolved. Romance. You may need a little extra emotional support from your partner at the moment. Communications between you will be especially strong, but be careful not to be too demanding.

A long running dispute with your boss may come to a head this week. Keep cool and try not to get too upset if you are criticised. Romance. A surprise from your partner will help to cement your relationship after a recent row.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

Activities which don’t need much money will give you a chance to get back on your feet financially. Some recent extravagances have taken their toll. Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will give your love-life a push in the right direction. A romantic get-together this week will put your relationship onto much firmer ground after a recent misunderstanding.

The loss of a personal possession will upset you for a while. There is a reason why this object went missing, however. You will find it again when the time is right. Romance. You may find it a little harder than usual to express your feelings. A powerful aspect to Mercury at the end of the week will help you to communicate with others.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

A surprise move later in the week may leave you wondering what is going on. Talk to a person whom you can trust – your other colleagues may not be so quick to tell you everything. Romance. A power-struggle between you and your partner will not help either of you. Do your best to settle a recent dispute in a way which satisfies both sides.

A person whom you hardly know will give you an unexpected piece of advice. You can take most of what this person says with a pinch of salt, but one observation will be worth taking seriously. Romance. Don’t let a minor frustration throw you off course. You may not be feeling your usual self at the moment, and will give up far too easily.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

You may find it difficult to tolerate people who don’t know what they are doing. You won’t appreciate having to clear up a mess caused by someone else. Romance. If you are able to relax properly this will be an excellent week for both of you. Be especially careful not to get into arguments, especially ones involving money. You won’t be in a mood for compromise at the moment!

Be careful that other people don’t take advantage of your good nature. You are a kind person but you need to be careful that your good nature isn’t taken advantage of by the wrong person. Romance. Your partner’s ability to understand you will help to bring you both closer together. You will appreciate the interest they have in your life.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

At times this week you will need to spend more time by yourself. You have a lot of work to get through and won’t be happy if you are constantly interrupted. Romance. A new relationship may pick up speed faster than you expect. Very soon you will have to make a decision about how quickly you want to get involved with this person.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A kind word will go a– long way. Your enthuFor all your printing needs www.lotsa.com.au siasm and energy will be appreciated by the people around you; however you must be sympathetic to people who are not so dynamic. Romance. CCTV upgrade keeping the town centre under scrutiny The new Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system in Nhulunbuy is now operational offering the scrutinisers of the videos much clearer images. At the Chamber of Commerce gala dinner last October business operators were told of a new CCTV system that was to be installed. Compliance officer at the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited Rick Stephen said it had taken longer than anticipated, however, the coverage had also been increased as there were also additional cameras. As yet a camera has not been installed at the skate park although at the dinner in October Mr Stephen assured Eva Cantrell the NCL would be installing at least one camera there thus allaying her constant concern over vandalism in the park.

Elephants the solution to gamba grass? AN Australian scientist, looking to solve the problems of rampant bush fires and introduced grass species in Australian grasslands has made the radical suggestion that wild African elephants should be introduced. Professor David Bowman, an environmental scientist at the University of Tasmania, was published last week in the journal Nature considering a radical solution to the problems of bush fires and feral flora in Australia. “The piece is intentionally challenging,” Prof Bowman said. “I realise that there are major risks associated with what I am proposing,” he says. “But the usual approaches to managing these issues aren’t working.” He has opted for elephants because one major source of fuel for wildfires in northern Australia is gamba grass - a giant African species that is too big for native fauna and even feral buffalo to handle. “Gamba grass is a great meal for elephants or rhinoceroses. The idea of introducing elephants may seem absurd, but the only other methods likely to control gamba grass involve using chemicals or physically clearing the land, which would destroy the habitat,” he said. “Using mega-herbivores may ultimately be more practical and cost-effective, and it would help to conserve animals that are threatened by poaching in their native environments.”

Eight Gove swimmers selected for NT titles By MICHAEL STIMPSON SATuRdAy February 18 saw the Gove Barras Amateur Swimming Club come together at the Gove Aquatic Centre for their third meet of the 2012 season. This event held significance as the swimmers last chance to qualify for the NT Titles to be held in darwin in March. It also marked the switch from day time competition to twilight meets which, despite some lighting issues, was a raging success. Paul Schindler NT Swimming head coach was on deck to guide the swimmers through last minute preparations in addition to conducting school based training programmes. Paul also stayed

on until the Wednesday following the meet providing valuable tips and training expertise at Barra’s sessions. The afternoon kicked off with parents and coaches participating in a two hour training session conducted by Paul Carter of NT Swimming. This training saw our club coaches and parents trained in all facets of officiating at swim meets. As a result the times achieved by Gove swimmers at Barra’s meets are now officially recognised by Swimming Australia and NT Swimming. The Gove Barra’s Swimming Club would like to express its thanks to both Paul’s and NT Swimming for the ongoing support. Once the swimming got underway the kids set about proving just how

much hard work they had been putting in over the Christmas and new year break. A large group of Barra’s have been hitting the pool deck at 6.30am three days a week since late January in addition to those in the afternoon sessions. Once the starter’s pistol fired all onlookers were treated to a determined display of swimming from an impressively eager squad. From the outset personal bests were blown away and as the afternoon faded to evening there was a definite buzz around pool deck about the depth of improvement being witnessed. Here are a few statistics to demonstrate just how far these young athletes have come: 40 swimmers took part

in the meet; 108 personal best times were set; 15 swimmers achieved personal bests over 10 seconds faster than previous; young Lara Stimpson topped that list carving an amazing 32.04s off her previous best in the 100m breastroke. Eight swimmers - dean dreyer (Groote Eylante), Jack Kirby, Tayla dowzard, Marika dobell, Alex donovan, Charlize Appo and darcy Lane will represent Gove at the NT titles in March. At the rate some of these Barra’s are improving it may pay to start checking out flights to Brazil in 2016. Parents and swimmers enjoyed a tasty barbecue once the swimming action had finished and some time to

proudly reflect great achievements. Rounding out the night presentations were made to all that had achieved personal bests in addition to three coaches’ awards. Tahli Stimpson (junior), Liam Arckoll (intermediate) and Jesse Chamberlain (senior) were aptly chosen by head coach, Clare Jones-Bishop who was also honoured for her immeasurable contribution to the Barra’s family. In closing it is with some sadness that the Barra’s say farewell to Clare and family. Clare’s contribution to the club has been immense and as she and her family embark on life’s next adventure all Barra’s swimmers and parents send their heartfelt thanks and best wishes.

Thank You!

The Walngawu Djakamirri Surf Life Saving Club board and members would like to express their appreciation to the following sponsors for their support of the five youths, coach, assistant coach and senior cultural advisor with their attendance at National Interstate Surf Life Saving Championships in Manly, NSW, last month. Without the kind and generous contributions from these sponsors it would not have been possible for these indigenous youths to participate and be a part of making Surf Life Saving history.
