The Nhulunbuy Town Hall was the venue for the annual dinner which was part of the October business month highlighting the importance of businesses within the community.

Marngarr Resource Centre, the Nhulunbuy Corporation, Charles Darwin University, ITEC Employment Services, Department of Employment Education and Workplace Relations, Community Enterprises Australia, Gil’s Graphic Solutions, Norforce, Lirrwi Yolgnu Tourism Aboriginal Corporation, and Vocational Education and Training in Schools with key points being the importance of training and education at a local level highlighting the work

carried out by their organisations and businesses.

The VETiS was represented by Marlene Organ who received $3,500 from the Chamber of Commerce to fund additional equipment needed for the programme. Ms Organ said of the 120 senior students at Nhulunbuy High School 80 were undertaking VET courses.

“These funds will be used to buy equipment for school based apprenticeships which would in turn

benefit local businesses,” Ms Organ said.

Treacy Harry, East Arnhem Chamber executive officer, thanked all the sponsors who assisted in making the function such a success and along with Jacqueline Rawles was in return thanked for their tireless efforts.

Local Member, Lynne Walker and NT Attorney General, Rob Knight were special guests at the dinner.

Mr Knight said across the Territory 6,000 people had taken part in

Business month events and had been involved in his former roll as Minister for Business. He commended the Chamber of East Arnhem for their efforts during the month.

A special fundraiser was held during the evening for baby Mia Hampel whose mother, Sarah, died a week after she was born. Mia and her father, Matt, are moving to South Australia to be with family and donations to the ‘Mia Fund’ can be left at Woolworths, LJ Hooker or IGA.

Kids in the picture through workshop MANINGRIDA School was selected from over one thousand applicants to host a 2011 Moran Arts Foundation photography workshop.

In September a class of 30 students received a digital camera each to use for the day under the instruction photographer Peter Edward.

The full day workshop explored the art and technique of photography, visual storytelling and interpretation of the Moran Prizes 2011 theme of ‘Contemporary Life in Australia’.

The Arts Foundation received over 1,000 requests from schools all over the country requesting the workshop. The workshop was made possible with the support of the foundations sponsors in particular, the Commonwealth Bank.

Mr Mark Moran CEO of the Moran Arts Foundation said, “We are receiving millions of hits on the Moran Arts website monthly from families and schools.

“For Maningrida to be selected is a real credit to the school and a wonderful opportunity for the children to participate in a programme that is creating excitement all over Australia.”

All Australian students are welcome to enter the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prizes with up to $300,000 of prize monies up for grabs. Previous student works can be viewed on the website www.moranprizes. com.au.

Digital cameras are awarded to all primary school finalists and certificates to all finalists and semi-finalists.

Photographer Peter Edward said his task was to gain access and teach his workshops into some of the remotest communities in the NT. “Moran work very hard to support me to bring their free photographic workshops to these isolated aboriginal communities, “ he said.

It took him five hours on a the rough dirt road east of Jabiru crossing two rivers and another dozen smaller creek crossings.

“But all the travel is worth it when you see the smiles and joy these workshops bring to the school.

“The Moran Workshops I teach prove these remote students are not afraid of the technology and just as capable of taking great photos as their city counterparts.

“I enjoy teaching photography, especially the indigenous students. They see things us white fella’s don’t see. They teach me to see their ancient lands, to see plants as foods, to see the animal tracks, and find where animals live. I find my students are filled with a bright learning spirit, plenty of laughter and have cheeky shy smiles.

“In most cases English is a second language to their local aboriginal language.

Photography is such a powerful and instant teaching tool, and visual images cross all language barriers.

In many cases the photos these student take home from the Moran workshops are the only photos they have, and become treasured possessions.”

Flights out of Gove unaffected

By MARJO HALLOWELL WHEN the Qantas fleet was grounded on the weekend many in Gove were left wondering how they would manage to get out of town.

Fortunately the Qantas Link flights that provide the flights to and from Gove were not affected, however, those travelling with Qantas beyond Cairns or Darwin were stranded as were tens of thousands of passengers worldwide.

With one service in the morning from Darwin and one in the evening from Cairns the airline carries the majority of passengers in and out of town.

Air North does have a morning service to Darwin and returns in the evening.

Local member for Nhulunbuy, Lynne Walker said this action by Qantas management is extraordinary

and premature.

“In forcing this case, Qantas have not only locked out their workforce but locked out passengers. Without a doubt, local people will have their travel plans disrupted.

Knowing our staff in Qantas Gove, I’m sure they will be doing everything they can to accommodate people but it’s a situation not of their making but rather their CEO Alan Joyce,” Mrs Walker said.

“Apart from the disruption to travellers, the impact on business is potentially disastrous especially given the importance of the tourism sector at a Territory and local level,” she said.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson, together with Deputy Chief Minister and Treasurer Delia Lawrie and Tourism Minister Malarndirri McCarthy held talks with key industry figures on Sunday over the Qantas dispute and its impacts to the Territory.

Road safety forum at Walkabout A ROAD Safety Forum is being held at the Walkabout Lodge today (Wednesday November 2) at the Walkabout Lodge.

“Infrastructure is important but it counts for nothing without the dedicated teachers and staff.”

Local awards went to Leanne Warramarrba from Groote Eylandt for support staff Member of the Year, cameron adams from ramingining for the teaching and Leadership for aboriginal and torres strait Islander award and Genevieve donohue from Groote Eylandt for Primary teacher.

Mr adams said he did his practical work while studying in an indigenous school in Wa and decided he wanted to pursue that line of work. He has been at raminging for two and a half years.

“I enjoy building relationships and creating activities that are relevant to the needs of the children,” Mr cameron said.

Ms donohue, who teaches 2/3 and offers curriculum support at alyangula School said she first started teaching in 1991 and has only been working in the remote area for the last year.

“I really enjoy what I am doing and working with the children at the school,” she said. coral o’Neal accepted the award on behalf of Ms Warramarrba and said: “Leanne is a quiet achiever and dedicated to the children at her school.”

LOCAL astronomer, Ian Maclean was pleasantly surpirised last week as others wondered what was causing a strange light source.

“I almost ran off the road, as to my absolute surprise there was a “second sun” in the sky, just before sunset on Friday night.

“As a space Weather follower, I knew I had a sun Dog. “something I have never seen in our tropical skies. I raced for the camera and these images are the results. It even brightened before my eyes at one stage, I was stunned at my good fortune and delighted by yet another demonstration, showing the beauty of our Planet.”

Gove Astronomers just had their final Astronomy night for 2011 on saturday night at their Dhupma Road observing site.

“The opposition of Jupiter is the most signifigant thing in the night sky at the moment with Jupiter rising in the east as the sun sets in the west.

Local Councillor goes to gaol An EAst Arnhem shire councillor recorded his 12th drink- driving charge in more than 20 years and will spend the next 10 months in gaol.

Lionel Jaragba pleaded guilty to high range drink-driving and driving while disqualified and was sentenced to 12 months jail suspended after 10 months.

His solicitor Chrissy McConnel told the court Jaragba had a “longlasting” problem with alcohol.

“When he’s sober he doesn’t offend,” she said.

Chief magistrate Hilary Hannam said he had been committing offences whether he had a low, medium or high range blood alcohol reading.

“He has got to get himself into rehab. He has got to stop drinking.” she said . “He has got to do it himself.” she said that she wasn’t going to perpetuate the idea that it was the responsibility of someone else to keep Jaragba sober.

Ms McConnel said that the councillor understood he had a real alcohol problem and wanted help and added he would need assistance.

Ms Hannam said: “How do you suggest I do that?”

Police prosecutor Matt Parsons said Jaragba really had to help himself as he had 11 previous charges for drink-driving and 10 for driving while disqualified.

Jaragba returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.223 per cent when caught driving on september 11.

Ms Hannam said Jaragba was an “important” person on Groote Eylandt because of his role in the shire and said he was not in court due to his “alcoholism”.

“You’re before the court because you placed the public at risk by drinking and driving,” she said. she said she had no choice but to restore the balance of a previous suspended sentence of four months.

He was sentenced to a further eight months jail for the fresh offending and disqualified from driving for five years.

Changes planned for Garma festival structure next year GARMA is to be differently strtuctured next year to allow an upgrade to the infrastructure of the Festival site.

In a letter to supporters, Chairman of the Yothu Yindi Foundation, Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM, advised of the new arrangements to the annual Festival in order that urgent upgrades could be carried out at the local site.

The 2012 Garma Festival programme will be differently structured focusing on the Key Forum which has been the core of the programming in previous years.

Gone will be the nightly bunggul, musical performances, youth conference and other cultural activities.

Most Aussies happy MOST Australians are happy with their lives according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2010 General Social Survey (GSS).

Of Australians aged 18 years and over 78 per cent were satisfied with their lives similar to the 76 per cent who reported being satisfied in 2001.

In 2010, 43 per cent were pleased or delighted with their lives, while 34 per cent reported being mostly satisfied. Those who were married (82 per cent), widowed (78 per cent) or never married (76 per cent) were more likely to be satisfied with their lives than those who were divorced (66 per cent ) or separated (56 per cent).

People who had contact with friends and family outside their household at least weekly were much more likely to be satisfied with their lives (78 per cent) than those who either had no recent contact (33 per cent) or who had no friends or family outside their immediate household (28 per cent).

Most Australian adults (97 per cent) have at least weekly contact with family or friends living outside their household. However, changes in technology are clearly having an impact on how Australians communicate with their friends and family. In 2010 twice as many adults (40 per cent) spent time engaged in Internet social activities compared to 2006 (20 per cent). The proportion of people using Internet services such as email and chat rooms to contact friends and relatives also increased, from 47 per cent to 60 per cent, over the four years.

In 2010, the number of people using mobile phone/ SMS (14.2 million) to contact friends and family living outside their homes exceeded the number using fixed phone services (13.9 million). While these changes were reflected across all age groups, the decrease in the proportion using fixed phones was most significant amongst 18-24 year olds, with 98 per cent using mobile phone/SMS compared to 67 per cent using fixed phones, down from 79 per cent in 2006.

Windsock shows the way

CYCLONE SEASON HARD WASTE PICKUP

A cyclone season residential Hard Waste Pick Up-is to be carried out on the Town Lease commencing

Monday, 7 November 2011

Residents are requested to place any items for collection on the footpath in front of their property in the days prior. Items to be collected may be of a domestic or household nature, which would constitute a cyclone hazard.

Items should be placed so they don’t interfere with either pedestrian or vehicular traffic. The Corporation workforce will pick up items commencing on Monday, 7 November, 2011 through until Friday, 11 November, 2011.

A RECENT Safety Assessment by Rachael Verdel, the new manager of the Gove Aquatic Centre, indicated the need to readily know the wind speed and direction during pool opening hours.

In the event of a chlorine gas leak from the pump house, the chlorine alarm will sound, and pool patrons will need to evacuate to a Muster Point in an upwind direction of the Pump House.

Emergency Services personnel, responding to the chlorine gas leak, will need to instantly assess the wind direction so as to safely approach the source of the gas leak in the pump house.

A regular pool patron, Justin Willmett, volunteered

to make a home-made wind sock to satisfy that safety requirement for Rachael.

A windsock is an easy-to-read visual indicator of wind speed and strength of wind gusts.

The open-mouth end of the windsock indicates the up-wind direction; The pointy end of the windsock indicates the down-wind direction; A horizontal and rigid windsock indicates a strong wind.; A flaccid windsock indicates no wind at all; A vigorously flapping windsock indicates gusty wind conditions.

As Rachael Verdel pointed out, another use of the windsock will be as an aid to the fishermen of the town in their decision to go fishing for the day or not.

THE people of Nhulunbuy can now go online to map where cane toads are jumping right across Australia and in your local area so as to better target them in pest control activities. You can now for the first time do the same for feral pigs as well as a host of other invasive animals.

ToadScan and FeralPigScan are the latest addition to the FeralScan project by the Invasive Animals CRC and the NSW Department of Primary Industries that has received overwhelming community participation with more than 8,000 records of feral pests entered by 4,500 participants Australia-wide since it was launched in January this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;FeralScan is a landholder, community, industry, government and business collaboration showcasing citizen science at its best,â&#x20AC;? NSW DPI FeralScan officer Peter West said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the first time, FeralScan gives a national overview of the extent of

invasive animals and damage they cause as well as mapping where control is being undertakenâ&#x20AC;?.

FeralScan supports anyone with an invasive animal problem to access essential information and resources to help in control measures and report information about feral animals in their local area. The FeralScan project also includes RabbitScan, FoxScan, MynaScan, and CamelScan.

FeralFishScan is part of future research plans to allow recreational fishers to start reporting carp in our rivers.

To further empower anyone with the technology to map where pest animals occur and to better target pest control activities, FeralScan plans to develop phone applications to deliver web-mapping technology directly into the hands of primary producers, pest controllers and communities Australiawide.

Territory aims to stay Green THE 2011 Australasian Environmental Law Enforcement and Regulators neTwork (AELERT) conference was held in Darwin last week.

The annual conference brings leading environmental regulators from Australia and New Zealand together with this year’s theme Connecting Regions, Connecting People was officially opened by Environment Minister Karl Hampton.

“The Territory Government is the greenest in the Territory’s history and progressing targets within the Territory 2030 strategic plan shows we are heading in the right direction,” Mr Hampton said.

“We stand proud of our environmental record that includes better outcomes and protections for our environment.

“These achievements include establishing an independent Environment Protection Authority, banning plastic bags and introducing the popular cash for containers scheme.

“This Government has also increased research and monitoring of Darwin Harbour and made a significant

investment in more compliance officers.”

The AELERT conference featured a diverse group of the nation’s regulators and keynote speakers such as Sean Willmore from The Thin Green Line Foundation, The Lizard King author Bryan Christy, Environment Protection Authority chairman Professor Grahame Webb, Dr David Lawson from the Wildlife Conservation Society and John Fogarty from the United States Environmental Protection Authority.

AELERT formed in 2003 with the first national conference held in Melbourne in 2004 and it now has more than 80 member agencies.

The objective of the network is to promote interagency cooperation, raise professional standards in the administration of environmental law, facilitate development of bilateral and multilateral relationships and establish nationally agreed competency and training standards.

Natural disaster safety website launched SECURE NT- a new one stop online safety and advice site providing comprehensive information on natural disasters and other critical situations was launched by Chief Minister Paul Henderson last week.

Mr Henderson said Secure NT would serve as a valuable tool for Territorians during emergency events like cyclones and floods.

“We know more and more people are turning to the internet and social media for information when planning for emergency situations. That is why my Government has developed this new all-in-one website,” Mr Henderson said.

Secure NT will provide up to date information during an event, as well as provide information to help people prepare and recover from a range of disasters, including cyclones, floods, bushfires and severe storms.

The site also features links to a live twitter feed as well as a link to a facebook page - all of which will offer the latest in news and information for Territorians.

“We know in the Territory we get our fair share of floods, cyclones and fires - this latest tool will be a valuable addition to help Territorians stay prepared, stay informed and stay safe.”

Constitutional Convention Bill expected to be passed THE Constitutional Convention Bill 2011 was introduced into the NT parliament last week and will be debated - and we expect passed - in the November sittings.

This Bill will enable the election of delegates to be part of the Constitutional Convention, scheduled for April 2012. This will be an important platform to progress the Territory’s bid for Statehood.

The Speaker, the Hon Jane Aagaard MLA, as part of Territory-wide consultations, will be visiting Nhulunbuy on Monday November 14 to hold two public sessions for those who would like to learn more about Statehood and the Constitutional Convention. Sessions will be at the Walkabout at 12.30pm and another at 5.30pm.

Emergency landing for man in Jabiru A 31-year-old male pilot and his two passengers were lucky to escape without injury following an emergency landing in Jabiru last Wednessday.

Station Officer Tex Tourell from the NT Fire and Rescue Service said that the pilot of the Gunbalanya Air Cessna 310 plane called through at around 6:30 pm stating the plane was experiencing difficulties with its landing gear.

“The plane, with its three occupants, departed from Manmoi heading to Maningrida, however, after take off the pilot realised the front wheel of the plane was faulty” said Station Officer Tourell.

“The wheel could neither be retracted nor extended and at that point, the pilot called through to raise the alarm, stating he was to make a controlled crash landing at Jabiru.

“Police, Jabiru Fire and Rescue, ERA Emergency Services and Jabiru Health Clinic members attended the airstrip; the plane landed nose down without incident.

“Although the nose, the two props of the plane and the tarmac were damaged, all occupants were uninjured.

You have to take your hat off to the pilot who made the landing look easy and for staying calm during the entire situation.”

The airstrip has since been cleared.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is now investigating the incident.

Unreported income could jeopardise payments SOME 95,000 parents who received welfare payments to help them raise their children are being urged to satisfy eligibility requirements or face the possibility of having their benefits stopped.

Minister for Human Services Tanya Plibersek said $551 million in Family Tax Benefits (FTB) had been paid to the parents who hadn’t lodged tax returns for the 2009-10 financial year.

“The Family Tax Benefit is a means tested payment designed to help parents with the day-to-day cost of raising children,” said Ms Plibersek.

“Parents who receive the fortnightly instalments are required to lodge a tax return at the end of the financial year to prove their income didn’t exceed the threshold for the level of payment they received.”

Ms Plibersek said parents who might have overlooked the requirement to lodge a return were urged to do so as quickly as possible.

“The Government needs to make sure families received the correct amount of assistance for their circumstances. But if we can’t confirm a family’s income for the year they may end up with a debt.”

Ms Plibersek said Centrelink wrote to 343,000 affected families in April reminding them they needed to lodge their overdue returns by June 30 or risk having to repay the money. To date, 95,000 have not lodged a return.

She said families could be required to repay an average of $5,800 each.

Parents claiming the benefit are required to provide Centrelink with an income estimate at the beginning of the financial year. At the end of each financial year, families are legally required to either lodge returns, or tell Centrelink that they don’t need to lodge, so their payment can be reconciled.

Minister Plibersek said it wasn’t too late for families to avoid having to repay their debt.

“To avoid having their payments stopped, parents have until mid-January to lodge their returns, tell Centrelink that they don’t need to lodge one, or fully repay the debt.”

We see this as an opportunity too for our club, our local community as well as a large number of tourists visiting through the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have purchased a coffee machine and we have set a goal to buy a trailer or food van to use at community events, sporting venues and the local sports complex, where we will sell coffee and tea, cold drinks, and barbecue our sausages.â&#x20AC;?

A TEENAGER who threatened residents at the Alcohol and Other Drugs Rehabilitation Centre with a machete was returned to Darwin last month.

The 19-year-old had been sent to the Centre after previously appearing in Wadeye Court. On Monday, October 3, he threatened other residents and was disarmed by one of them.

He appeared from custody and was facing four charges of aggravated assault and one of being armed with a weapon. He was having difficulty with the local language and was remanded to appear in Darwin at a later date.

Nhulunbuy Primary School was a hive of activity on Friday October 21 with approximately 150 students from the Gove region participating in an inter school sports day involving AFL, Cricket and Basketball. Boys and girls from Years 5,6 and 7 were involved and all were keen participants and very enthusiastic.

The emphasis of the day was on participation and working together as a team. The students also played cricket which is a sport lots weren’t familiar with but really enjoyed.

The day was sponsored by Sodexo and Miwatj Health and there was an

emphasis on eating healthy food and following a healthy lifestyle.

“A big thank you from Arnhem School Sport for your continued support of supporting the students of the Arnhem region,” Nhulunbuy Primary School teacher Ian Darlington said.

Schools participating were Yirrkala CEC, Yirrkala Homelands, Gapuwiyak, Nhulunbuy Christian School, Nhulunbuy High School and Nhulunbuy Primary School.

“Thanks to all the teachers, Rob, Hamish, Boogie, Torra and Nathan for their help during the day. Hopefully we can expand the programme next year to include more schools and more sports,” Mr Darlington said.

Sailing attracts boaters to race

BY NEAL BAULCH SUNDAY, October 23, saw five times as many people as there were boats turn up for another great day on the water.

It was really nice to see so many people keen to get onboard whatever boat they could and to gain some skills or take it easy with a coldy. On the way out to the start line Petama encountered Salt who was being single handed on her way back from a fishing sail to Bonner rocks who was keen to join the race. Petama and Salt came along side each other and a couple of the sailors on board Petama jumped ship to lend Sam a hand. So with what Brad described as a “cheese and biscuit” course set, Salt was first across the line and made a bee line for half tide rock. Petama was next across the line who was then quickly overtaken by Wolley, then Solace 2 and Everly Blue.

Salt pointed very well to windward and made her way around half tide rock without having to tack but in doing so used her weight to push the smaller

Wolley off the rhumb line. No protest flag was noticed. This forced a tack for Wolley and Petama soon followed suit.

The next mark was Strath island which was kept to starboard and another tack to get through the gap. Then a down wind leg to the South Granite islet with sails goose winged and Karla (Hope I got your name close) who is from what I hear a proficient dingy sailor, who has only been in town for 10 days, doing a great job on the helm of 40 feet of Petama. As the boats rounded South Granite island they were brought hard on the wind to come between the North and South Granites and then directly back to the finish line. It was still nice to see the winds in the dry season direction albeit swinging around a tad. As seems to be the norm, Wolley was first across the line followed by Salt, Petama, Solace 2 and Everly Blue.

The race wound up with a sausage sizzle, a sunset and with the amount of chit chat everybody went home with a smile on their face with their worries blown away.

Surf Club presentations NHULUNBUY Surf Life Saving Club lifesavers were recently acknowledged for their contributions to the local community.

The club members put in 1050 patrol hours this season.

At their presentation night Emma Putland was named as Lifesaver of the year.

Other awards were U19 Lifesaver of the year - Alice Rudolph; U17 Lifefesaver of the Year and Rookie of the Year - Maddi Barnett, Volunteer of

the Year - Grant Barnett; Patrol Captain of the Year - Tony Kelly, Most Patrol Hours Surf Rescue Certificate- Jack Tracy;Young Achiever - Jesse Chamberlain and Presidents Award - McGraths and Forbes.

Steve Castelli took out the Trainer of the Year , Official of the Year and Most Patrol Hours (Bronze Medallion).

The Club has officially stopped patrolling local beaches as of the end of September and will resume

patrols again next June.

Club President, Chris Putland warned locals that stingers have been seen in local waters as have crocodiles and people should be vigilant whenever on local beaches.

“Crocs are on the move as breeding season approaches and they are staking their territories.”

The Club will remain open on Friday nights although the barbecue will stop from December through to February.

The Golf Doctor: Lesson number three, ball position Many people new, and not so new, to golf may not know the correct positioning for the ball relative to your set up.

There are basically three different ball positions for the three different types of clubs - the driver, irons and pitching wedge.

Here I give an easy way of showing that the ball position does change with different clubs. This of course can change with lie of the ball.

If playing a driver you need to line the ball up with the inside left heel for a right-handed golfer.

With a 7-iron the ball should generally be lined up just forward of the centre of your stance.

U s ing a pitching wedge the ball should be centred.
