SUNDAY
SURROUNDED by the sea it is little wonder that Nhulunbuy probably has the highest number of boats per capita in Australia. A recent count recorded 754 boats visible from the street and included the empty trailer count at the boat ramps. It doesn’t include the boats that are in sheds or in backyards. This is indicative of the fishing culture that abounds in Gove, especially when you consider there are only 1,400 homes. That means it is highly unlikely that you or your neighbour does not own a boat. One boat for every two houses must be a record for a town in Australia though it is hard to get accurate figures on this as in the NT it is not necessary to register your boat, nor is it necessary to have a boat license as it is in every other state in Australia. It is, however, mandatory the boat owners carry the suitable boat safety equipment. The local Police carry out regular checks to ensure boats out on the water are complying with these regulations. All the information about what safety equipment is required on boats is obtainable from the Police Station or the Nhulunbuy Recreational Sport Fishing Club or online. Not only is it a legal requirement it is also imperative in case of any emergency so that rescue services can locate anyone out on the water should they experience difficulties. A chart shows requirements for the size of the boat. Under five metres boats must carry a life jacket for each occupant, a waterproof torch, at least one litre of water for each occupant, two red flares, two orange smoke signals, an anchor, oars, and a bailer. If venturing more than two nautical miles from shore an EPIRB is also required. For boats five to 10 metres at the above are required as well as a compass, bilge pump, fire extinguisher, charts of the area, v-sheet and an EPIRB. Radios should be tuned to Channel 16 in the Darwin to Gove area. These are minimum safety requirements and Nhulunbuy Police are checking to ensure the safety of those on the water by regularly checking boats. They have the use of the boat from Gapuwijak and as well as safety checks they are also checking catch limits.

INVESTIGATIONS and a major clean up operation continued last Friday after a road train rolled on the Carpentaria Highway, 120km east of the Stuart Highway, on Thursday. The truck was carrying 52,000 litres of diesel fuel from Darwin to the Macarthur River Mine when the rollover occurred. Initial investigations indicate the last two trailers of the truck rolled after they travelled onto the verge of the road shortly after 9.40am. As a result of the crash, approximately 20,000 litres of diesel fuel was lost from the tanks. The 55-year-old male driver was not injured in the rollover. Police and Fire Emergency Response Group members from Borroloola attended the scene and investigations are continuing and NT WorkSafe has been advised of the incident. The truck company involved have provided a recovery team to the site.
Locals take out top prizes at the Deadly’s THE Deadly Awards were announced in Sydney last week and three local winners took out four of the top honours. Gurrumul Yunupingu from Elcho Island took out the Male Artist of the Year and the Album of the year was his recently released Rrakala. He was not in Sydney for the presentation but recieved his award by video link. Yirrkala born Kathy Marika who has been working in Sydney as Bangarra’s cultural consultant took out the award for Dancer of the Year. Aboriginal Mental Health Worker on Groote Eylandt, Muriel Jaragba, who has been at the forefront of Aboriginal mental health for well over a decade took out the top award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker of the Year Award. From the opening strains of NT Shellie Morris’ singing Yarrbanthalu in language and backed by the Yanyuwa Singers and the Gondwana National Indigenous Children’s Choir, audiences knew the 17th Deadly Awards at the Sydney Opera House last Tuesday night promised something spectacular. The high moments kept on resonating for the sold out awards’ night as Gurrumul Yunupingu picked up his two awards while songstress Jessica Mauboy took out the coveted Female Artist of the Year Award. Mad Bastards was the standout Film of the Year, against a strong line-up. Hip-hop group Last Kinection was named Band of the Year and won Single Release of the Year. Up and coming talents from the NT, Iwantja Band, went home with Most Promising
New Talent in Music. Sportsmen and women, actors, dancers, writers, health workers, educators and broadcasters were among other Deadly recipients. Deadly’s Executive Producer/Artistic Director Gavin Jones described the awards as the best yet. “What a night at the Sydney Opera House as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people got behind their Deadly Award winners, through record voting and firmly endorsing their heroes,” Mr Jones said. “The Deadlys go from strength to strength each year. We have strong finalists and winners to showcase, some of Indigenous Australia’s best talent to grace the Opera House stage and the overwhelming support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and the wider Australian public as ingredients that produce a very successful national awards night. “It is an honour for Vibe Australia to produce the Deadlys and bring that special magic that is the Deadlys forward for all to enjoy.” The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music, Sport, Entertainment and Community Awards, the Deadly’s recognise the achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their contribution to their communities and to wider Australia.” The Ella Award for Lifetime Achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sport went to Evonne Goolagong Cawley and the Jimmy Little Award for Lifetime Achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Music went to Col Hardy.

A time for Police to be remembered By MARJO HALLOWELL ACROSS the nation Police officers remembered their fallen comrades and in Gove they also held their first such commemoration service. Attended by representatives of other emergency and community organisations they all gathered outside the Nhulunbuy Police station last Thursday. The first National Police Remembrance Day for Police in Australia was held on September 29, 1989. The seed for the day to remember fallen officers was sown at the Australasian Police Commissioners conference the previous year. The day was to encourage Police officers and their families to honour the memory of comrades who have given up their lives in service to their communities and focus public attention on the men and women of the Police Forces throughout Australia whose responsibility it is to ensure peace and good order and the difficulties they face in bearing that responsibility. September 29 was chosen as it is St Michael’s Day - the patron saint of Police officers. S e n i o r S e rg e a n t B r e n d a n Muldoon welcomed all who had gathered. Superintendent Danny Bacon offered a prayer and local officers took part in the proceedings. A single red rose way laid in memory of the two police officers who had died in Australia in the last 12 months. They were Sergeant Daniel Stiller who died on December 1 after his motorbike was hit by a truck at Mt Larkham and Detective Senior Constable Damian
Leeding who died as a result of injuries sustained from being shot on May 29 when attending an armed robbery on the Gold Coast. Both were members of the

WORLDSKILLS were being tested at Nhulunbuy High School last week as 11 students worked on their assignments as part of the Territory wide competition. Engineering and business skills were being tested with five students working on their food station and six working on their business skills. The engineering students had 12 hours to work on their project having to complete an assignment following plans and a set criteria for the completion of their work. The business students had to work on documentation, creating letterheads, accounting practices and OH&S knowledge. The students, all from Year 10 -12, will be accessed in the Territory wide competition with the winner competing at the Nationals next year. Each student, who is a first year VET participant, will receive a certificate of participation to add to their resume. VET coordinator said it was an ideal opportunity for the students to highlight what they were capable of. Winners of the business section were Jade McLean, Carlene Tawhi, Tiffanii Rose with Austin Boyd, Jack Richter and Darcy Roeger taking out the placings in the engineering section. Judges in the engineering section were Brenton Baillie from Rio Tinto Alcan Gove, Rachael Mortimer from GTNT and Barry Wheelan from Charles Darwin University. Convenors were Ben Jones and Troy Gill. In the business section Jacqueline Rawles and Denise Fincham were the judges with Marlene Organ the convenor.
$29,000 of kava seized ABOUT $29,000 worth of kava was seized by Bulman Police following a vehicle apprehension last Thursday night. Police apprehended the Toyota Land Cruiser about 46km south west of Bulman on the Central Arnhem Highway and the search yielded a commercial quantity of kava. In total, 46.7kg of kava was located within the vehicle and was distributed among 968 deal bags, weighing 48 grams each. The seizure would yield approximately $29,000 if sold in communities. The 32-year-old driver failed to pull over when requested, and drove around the Police vehicle, accelerating down the highway. Police pursued the vehicle for a short distance before it was apprehended. The vehicle was then found to have four additional adult occupants and five young children on board.

The male offender has been charged with possession of a commercial quantity of kava, supply a commercial quantity of kava, unaccompanied Learner driver, failure to display ‘L’ plates and failure to comply with Police Officer’s Direction by not stopping. The offender has been bailed to appear at court in Barunga October, 11. Acting Superintendent Kylie Proctor from the Arnhem Operational Service Division welcomed the kava seizure. “Bulman Police has seized a significant quantity of kava, preventing a further 47kg from entering our communities. This is a great result in our ongoing fight against kava and drug traffickers supplying remote communities,” he said. “It is also disappointing that this man risked the welfare of his passengers, five of whom were children, by eluding Police and failing to pull over when requested.”

Disaster procedures in place for 2011/12
MEMBERS of the counter Disaster Planning Committee met in Gove recently to ensure emergency procedures were in place for the upcoming cyclone season. Chairman of the committee, Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon, said they met at this time every year.
“We need to ensure that all the emergency services and government agencies know what their responsibilities and roles are should an emergency arise. “By calling this meeting we make sure all the contact details are current and relevant. “There are often new people to the area and they need to know
what their duties are in time of crisis or emergency. Snr Sgt Muldoon said the Police were the first point of contact in any emergency and reassured the community that all other agencies knew what their tasks were so they could act without hesitation should the need arise.
The work crew at the airport - Tony Smith, John McGuire and Peter McCormack.
Improving first impressions AIRPORT ground staff have just finished a viewing area at the terminal. Nhulunbuy Corporation staff have top-dressed, grassed and installed a reticulated water system to ensure a comfortable area for passengers and visitors to the airport. Just outside the arrivals door the viewing area will ensure everyone a comfortable outdoor area in which to either watch the aircraft or just to wait outside. A table and chairs will be added for the convenience of the users. Airport manager, Les Mitchell, said it was an ideal opportunity to make the area more welcoming. It has been part of a two year project to improve the aesthetic appearance of the airport. A reticulated water system has been installed in the new area and also in the landscaped areas around the car park and the apron outside the terminal. Peter McCormack said it was to ensure the people arriving got a good first impression of Gove. “Seeing green grass is a lot better than seeing bare earth, he said. “We want to make this a nice place to come to and although it has taken a long time to complete it is great we are at the end of the project, although we will continue to make improvements around the airport.

Wi-Fi for schools EIGHTY remote schools are among the 154 to receive a Cisco wireless (Wi-Fi) network from the Northern Territory Department of Education and Training (DET). The department’s outsourced desktop service provider CSG began flying 2500 Cisco Systems access points to remote schools last week and anticipates the networks will be operational before the end of November, weather permitting. The rollout aims to reduce reliance on cellular networks in remote areas, while providing secure access to corporate applications. The department will allow “approved users of mobile devices and laptops access to internal DET learning resources and business systems as well as the public internet using the Wi-Fi network. Those approved devices include trials of Apple iPad tablet computers, which have been handed out to DET staff and around 400 students as part of the NT CLOUD iPad trial. Students at Angurugu School are the first on Groote Eylandt to trial the ipads “A content filter is used for all internet access from school wired and wireless networks, said Marcia Hoffmann, executive director of corporate services at NTDET.

RECYCLING aluminium cans in Nhulunbuy has been a fundraiser for the local Lions Club for many years. With the club on the verge of closing the Nhulunbuy Rotary Club has come to the assistance of the Lions and last weekend saw them working together to crush all the cans that had built up outside the Lion’s house. The pile of cans that had been left there over the course of many months was crushed and placed on pallets ready for shipping out.

The Rotary Club will now build a large wire basket in which people can dump their aluminium cans ready for the next crushing session. It took the six Rotarians and one Lion over four hours to clear the backlog but Rotary president Barry Fleming said they would now do it on a more regular basis. “We encourage individuals and businesses to bring their empty cans to the house in the area behind the bakery so we can crush them and raise money for the community projects we
support, Mr Fleming said. “We also encourage other groups to bring bulk lots around that we will buy from them for about 50 to 60 cents per kilo. “Event organisers might also like to have separate collection points for people to deposit the cans and help the environment by keeping what can be recycled out of the landfill. “We only crush aluminium cans and we ask people bringing them around to please ensure there are no glass bottles or PET bottles among them.
Mapuru food container stolen Members of the Mapuru Co-op, Left to right Margaret Bambalarra, Clara Wubuk, Linda Marathuwarr and Jackie Nguluwuidi. ON FRIDAY afternoon, September 16, a container, which is critical for a food supply to this very remote Mapuru township, was stolen. Someone with a tilt tray truck and work boots stole the Mapuru container from the corner of the Mapuru Road and the Central Arnhem Highway. It will now take Mapuru residents over a year to save up enough money to purchase and position another container at the turn off. More significantly, Mapuru residents feel hurt and abused by these thieves. They are honest people, things are never stolen at Mapuru. Over a year ago Mapuru residents saved their money, bought and positioned a 20ft steel container at Flat Rock on the Central Arnhem Highway about 12 hours drive from Darwin and about two and a half hours south west of Nhulun. Food and goods are dropped off at the container by passing freight trucks. Residents then drive about two hours to pick up the goods before returning to Mapuru to stock the only store at Mapuru, the food co-op. Ten years ago the people of Mapuru started this food co-op so they would not have to charter planes to Elcho Island just to go shopping.
The co-op ( www.arnhemweavers. com.au) is entirely run and managed by local residents. The Co-op sells only nutritious foods that supplement food hunted and gathered, such as yams, buffalo, fish and shellfish. By resident agreement there are no soft drinks, lollies, chips or chocolate sold through the co-op. Mapuru kids are fit and healthy, they have the best teeth in Arnhem. For many years residents brought food from Darwin to Elcho by barge. Then they had two choices, firstly they could either charter planes to bring the food to Mapuru, which is very expensive, or they could drive an hour to a boat landing, travel another hour through the mangroves and across Cadell Strait, pick up the food from the barge and return to Mapuru, if they were not caught by tides. This trip often takes12 or more hours, and during the wet season a return trip often takes 24 hours. The container at Flat Rock solved this problem and improved Mapuru peoples quality of life. Now in a thoughtless act, it has been stolen. If you have any idea who stole this container please contact Nhulunbuy Police or leave a message for John on 89466983.

Fire alarms become mandatory in the Territory AS from November 1 it is mandatory for all residences in the Territory to have photoelectric smoke alarms installed. The NT Government announced the changes to the Fire and Emergency Regulations last month. The Acting Director of the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS), Mick Ayre said the introduction of smoke alarms in every residence is a very positive move. “The photoelectric type of alarm is strongly favoured by fire services everywhere, as they are able to detect smouldering fires that are not as quickly picked up by the ionization type of alarms. “The new regulations will require all owners of residential property across the Territory to install photoelectric smoke alarms.
When establishing a new lease on rental property, a landlord must ensure that a smoke alarm is installed; however the responsibility for maintaining the alarm in working order will be that of the tenant. “The price of photoelectric alarms is now comparable with the more common ionisation alarms. From November 1, all residential dwellings and movable dwellings including caravans, and temporary accommodation including safari-style tents are required to have a working photoelectric smoke alarm. If you already have a smoke alarm installed in your home and it is an ionisation smoke alarm, you do not have to change to a photoelectric smoke alarm until one of the following occurs: - Your smoke alarm ceases to work, in which case you will need
to replace it with a photoelectric type smoke alarm; - You sell your home; or you rent out your premises or renew a tenancy; - Or you hire out your caravan. “The new regulations are a major step forward in protecting vulnerable people and we will be posting information about smoke alarms and what the new regulations require, on our website - www.fire.nt.gov.au “There will also be a significant communications and education strategy to promote the use of photoelectric alarms, to help save lives. The aim of the education campaign is to inform and educate the community about the potential life saving benefits of these devices. “The community will be given
sufficient time to purchase and install the required smoke alarms. “People’s sense of smell is drastically impaired while they sleep and smouldering fires may burn for some time with poisonous gases emitted that can kill a person before they are even aware of the danger. “Too many people have lost their lives in house fires and in many cases, these homes had no smoke alarms. This to me is quite appalling as a simple smoke alarm can prevent injury and death when maintained and used properly,” said Acting Director Mick Ayre. The number of Territory buildings with smoke alarms has increased 35 to 73 per cent over the past five years and this new regulation will assist in ensuring the most vulnerable are protected as well.
National campaign against Hep C launched THE Centre for Disease Control is on a mission to increase awareness of the risks associated with the blood-borne virus Hepatitis C. A new campaign launched by the centre is encouraging people who may have put themselves at risk of Hepatitis C to contact their doctor or Clinic 34. It is also urging anyone who may have tested positive to the virus to consider treatment. “In recent years effective treatments have been made available to fight Hepatitis C, and most people on treatment do become clear of the illness,” Centre for Disease Control Jamie Broadfoot said.

Treatment can last between 6-12 months and is free through the Northern Territory’s free sexual health centres - Clinic 34. Hepatitis C is a blood borne virus passed from person to person through direct blood contact with someone who has the virus. The most common way Hepatitis C is spread in Australia is through the sharing of needles during drug use. “Hepatitis C can also be acquired through non-sterile tattooing and piercing, or any activity where a blood to blood contact occurs. It is very uncommon for the virus to be spread through social contact such as sharing eating utensils, kissing, touching or

Pedal Power at Christian School PEDAL power was the name of the game recently at Nhulunbuy Christian School with its annual Bike Day. The aim of Bike Day is to provide all students from Transition to Year 9 with an opportunity to have fun, do something physical and learn more about bike safety. Long time local teacher Mrs Gonnie Keogh is passionate about this annual event, coordinating sessions with local police since Bike Day was established four years ago. “It’s such a fun day out of the classroom with students challenging themselves, doing their best and with the older students helping the little ones; but there’s a serious side too. In a town like ours where most children ride bikes everywhere, they need to know how to stay safe on the roads” Shadrach house broke their dry spell, scoring the most points from participating students. Meshach and Adebnego weren’t far behind. Skill challenges involved riding along planks, around safety cones and between ropes. Aboriginal Community Police Officer Samara Butler really enjoyed her time with the students taking them through practical tests on road riding for all years. She finished off her sessions with Speed Radar trials - recording how fast the students travelled on their bikes. “Nhulunbuy Police hope to see all children wearing their bike helmets whenever they are on their bikes. And be careful when riding on the roads.” “We would hope all parents encourage their children and they themselves wear bike helmets when riding bikes and to stay safe on the road” Bike Day finished with icy poles and an interactive performance by The Amazing Deb and her circus show including an impressive display of Unicycle riding. The Ride-a-thon Champions were: Transition: Mackenzie De Ruwe 11 laps; Year 1: Riley O’Neal 12 lap; Year 2: Blake White 16 laps; Year 3: Denzel Shine and Alex Donovan 15 laps; Year 4: Blythe Bishop 10 laps (double course around two ovals); Year 5: Reid Aston 13 laps ;Year 6: Jordan Evans 13 laps; Middle School: Andrew O’Sullivan and William Stockley 15 laps.

POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY >> From page 3 “Those becoming police officers have high motives to keep the community safe and pleasant places to live, he said. “They have the might to back up those motives with personal loss, strains on their family lives and can ultimately pay with the loss of their life yet they go about their duties without fear.
Snr Sgt Muldoon said was the first time they had held a service in Gove and he was pleased so many people had attended and hoped they would continue to do so showing support for the work the men and women of the Police Force did within the community. CROSSWORD No. 68
SUDOKU No. 68
Your Lucky ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A difficult aspect to Mercury could create problems with communications which have consequences at the end of this week. Be especially careful not to rely on a crucial piece of information which you have not checked. Romance. Your love-life may seem a little low-key at the moment. A meeting later in the week will help it to pick up steam.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Don’t blame yourself for a let-down which was not your fault. You need to spend time finding a better solution, involving colleagues who are more reliable. Romance. This should be a very good period for new romantic adventures. A get-together with friends will put you in touch with an admirer.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)
FOR KIDS
A meeting later in the week will help you to set your sights higher after a recent disappointment. Romance. An admirer who has very different values from you might find your approach a little too direct. Make sure you take their cultural background into account.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Be prepared for some tough negotiations at work. A favourable aspect to Jupiter will help to give you some extra luck, but you will need to push hard to get the agreement that you need. Romance. A person whom you meet at work will want to see much more of you. Take the time to get to know this new admirer properly before you make a move.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A powerful aspect to Uranus later in the week may bring a strange new person into your life. Don’t be afraid to ask a few questions before you trust this new friend. Romance. Your partner may need a little extra attention. A surprise treat will put you both in a good mood.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) A person who seems to be trying to control your life may not have your best interests at heart, despite what they say. You need to make your own mind up about what this person is really doing. Romance. An unexpected remark could set you off. You may be a little unpredictable at times, and should do your best to calm down.
FINDWORD No. 68
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)
A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
An event which happened in the past will suddenly come back to you. Although you learnt a lesson at the time you may have forgotten it. Romance. Your partner will be on your mind a lot at the moment. Something which they said recently will show you how strong your relationship is.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A surprise gift early in the week will cheer you up for the next few days. You will be glad that this person has been thinking about you. Romance. A pleasant dream will help to reassure you about the long-term future of your relationship. The experiences you had in your dream will come true in real life, but not in quite the same way.

MUDDY RIVER
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Get to grips with a recent domestic problem before it becomes too serious. A friend who has had a similar experience will be able to give you useful advice. Romance. You may find your partner’s emotional energy a little stronger than usual at the moment. They will be disappointed if you don’t respond.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) It is time for you to make it out on your own. Don’t let a friend hold you back: even though they may seem to mean well, their advice will push you in the wrong direction. Romance. You will be surprised how easily you can work out what other people are thinking. You will need to keep one step ahead at the moment. A favourable aspect to Neptune will help your powers of intuition.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
QUOTE OF THE DAY The only thing constant in life is change. – Francois de la Rochefoucauld
SOLUTIONS No. 68
A long discussion with your boss will help you both to understand some recent conflict in a clearer light. You need to be flexible and must not assume that you are always in the right. Romance. A trip away from home could end up being much more romantic than you expect. Time spent alone with your partner will be rewarding.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) An intense discussion with a close friend will help you to get to the bottom of a difficult situation. You may have to be quite persistent before everything is clear, however. Romance. Your partner will be much livelier than they have been for some time, and you will also be in a very romantic mood. A dinner for two later in the week will bring you closer together.

Butler and Grieve clean sweep championships By GOVE TENNIS CLUB TENNIS Gove held its annual Club Championships senior event from September 23 to 25. Forty one competitors competed for the championship titles ranging from some juniors contesting for it to the oldies brushing off the cobwebs New comer to town from Adelaide, Damian Butler joined the club the same week the tournament was played and cleaned swept with a bag of titles winning the Men’s Open Singles, Open Doubles and Mixed Open Doubles. Damian only dropped two games in his round robin matches defeating the number three seed 9-1. Winning his pool placed him in the semi against Kelan Pearson who was home from boarding school. Kelan had defeated the number two seed but had some close matches against the other players. Number one seed Jake Mayer also went through to the semi and Michael Mayer made up the fourth player finishing as the best second placer. Kelan played well, but could not find the form he had in his round robin matches. Some tight line shots had the players on their toes contesting every shot. Damian a strong player at the net, got the edge and closed out the match at 9-5. In the other semi, brothers Jake and Michael Mayer fought it out for the final placing. Some big hitting and great passing shots from both players had the spectators in awe but the score was one sided with Jake going through 9-1. A score line that did not reflect the match.
Mayer wanting the title was eager to get on with the match. Butler struggling with the heat, refreshed from his semi, took to the court. A great match to watch but too many unforced errors from Mayer, gave Butler the title with a win 9-5. Donna Marie Grieve was too strong for the ladies in the Women’s Social event claiming three titles for 2011. Winning her pool not dropping a game. In the opposite pool Sarah Trusz had two tight matches against Jackie Willmott 7-5 and Nat Grant 6-4. Sarah just getting through to the final was no match for Donna-Marie whom did not drop a game having a convincing win 6-0. A shock for club manager and coach Nicky Mayer who entered the Women’s Open to make up numbers for the other competitors. Mayer was shocked to come out on top of Selena O’Sullivan and Sally Naughton to win the Open Singles 9-4 & 9-2 respectively. Mayer admits though she was on fire but lost a bit of that form as the weekend went on but managed to also win the Women’s Open Doubles with partner Terry Keily. The oldies were too strong for their younger counter parts only dropping 3 games in the Doubles. In the Men’s Social Singles, Paul Myerscough was back in town for work and it just happened that the tournament was on. Paul has been a past winner over the years. Meeting Jake Larsen in the final it was thought that Jake might get the upper hand, but Paul was head down and on with the job taking the title at 6-2.
Paul teamed up with Gil Avila in the Men’s Social Doubles. After winning their pool, they met Aslan Perwick and Scott Sims. Aslan and Scott had paired up in the Gove Open and were runner up in that event and decided to try their luck again. A great match and lots of excitement from both teams. Gil is always one to contest the net, and in the end Gil and Paul held on to take the match 7-5. A great final. In the Women’s Social Doubles there were some close matches before the finals. Jackie Willmott and Anna Harris only just got through over the number two seeds, Sarah Trusz and Terri Robinson. Anna and Jackie met Donna-Marie and Di Gentle in the final. Di and Donna-Marie have been hard to beat over the years and stand solid together. A great game and some desperation shots saw Donna-Marie and Di get up with a close 6-4 win. In a last minute bid to fill the draw on the day, Sarah and Billy Trusz made up the numbers, but upset the number one seeds, just getting through to the final with some very close results. Facing it off against Donna-Marie who was unseeded did not even have a partner at the start of the event. Tournament director Nicky, found Donna-Marie a partner at the last minute that proved to work in her favour. Scott Sims put his hand up to fill in which saw them make it through to the finals. A great game and some great shots down the line where spectators witnessed players in desperation changing hands just to get racquet on ball. Donna-Marie and Scott closed out the match in great style defeating the Trusz’s 6-2.
In the Men’s Open Doubles number 1 seeds, Michael Mayer and Roy Kellaway just scraped through to the final with a very close win against Kris Boyd and Billy Trusz 9-8. In the other pool, Damian Butler teamed up with Paul Mery winning their pool over Zsolt Bircsak/ Rob Young and Jake Larsen/Kelan Pearson. This was a good game to watch with some great baseline drives from Mayer, but Butler is just too strong at the net making the young ones work for every point. Paul and Damian went on to take the title 9-4. In the Mixed Open Doubles, Butler had teamed up with Selena O’Sullivan. This duo only dropped th games in four matches. A great stat. Finishing in runner up was Sally Naughton and Michael Mayer. Having a couple of close matches just got through over Terry Keily and Rob Young. The Club would like to thank all the players that entered to finish off the year with a great weekend of tennis. The Junior members will contest their titles for Club Champion on the weekend of the October 14 -16. Entries closed on Friday September 30, but if you have missed out in getting your entry in please contact club manger Nicky Mayer on 0407 460 487 or email Nicky on tennisgove@ gotalk.net.au. A reminder for all members that the club’s Presentation Night will be held at the Surf Club on Saturday October 29. Bookings essential. A three course dinner - $25 adults and $10 kids under 12. Gove soccer players play well in Cairns
A mixed team of Walkabout Winners and Cruisers representing Walkabout Lodge and Gove Toyota - Shayne Mogg, David Graetz, Kirsty Winter, Tony Weldon, John Tourish.
The Gove Junior Footballer Club played in Cairns last month. By DAVID HILL THE GJFC once again had the opportunity to take to Cairns their U15 mixed team to play three friendly soccer matches with the Redlynch Junior Football Club. All matches were played at the Redlynch club ground with the first game on Friday afternoon September 9, the second on Saturday morning and on Sunday morning. The first match was against the Redlynch U15 boy’s season team which played strongly and scored first. Gove struggled to get into there rhythm and in the first five minutes scored the first goal from a corner penalty. At half time the score was 5-2 Redlynch way. Final score was, 10-4 to Redlynch with Joe Lewellyn score all points for Gove. On Saturday Redlynch provided a mixed team but were short two players. Great sportsmanship from Rebecca Hill, Kevin Mitchell and Elizabeth Misob who helped make
up the numbers for Redlynch and played against their own side. Gove came out strong and with two quick goals from a pass from Daniel Olivera to Courtney Hodgson into goal. The second was from a penalty shot given to the team goal keeper Harry walker directly in from to slam the second into goal. A number of attempts from Saille Frumenze and Joe Lines through the match kept ball play in the Redlynch half. Joe Lewelyyn scored from a pass from Daniel Olivera with two more tries from Saille Frumeze taking the half time score to 5-1. Full time score was 9-4 with two points from Daniel Olivera, one from Joe Lewellyn and one more from Saille Frumenze. The last match on Sunday again was with a mixed Redlynch side but again was short by two players. Sam Smith and Leilani Ani exchanged jerseys to make up the numbers for Redlynch. Gove again was dominant with early goals from a corner pass from
Daniel Olivera to Joe Lines with a great header and another corner to Joe Lewellyn. Roy Kalleway core the third with Joe Lewellyn scoring two more, Saille Frumenze 1, Joe Lines 1 more, Kevin Mitchel 1, Bintang Daly 1 and Elizabeth Misob 1. With a half time score at 11-0. To even up the match Joe Lewellyn and Saille Frumenze were given to Redlynch to allow a more even game. The exchange held back the scoring rate with only one more goal from Daniel Olivera with a full time result being 12-0. The team showed great sportsmanship throughout the weekend and the Gove Junior football Club would like to thank RioTinto for there assistance, Qantas Antonio Morais, Camilla and Ian Jovicic. Funding comes from the Football Club’s canteen which is run throughout the year and they also received funding from Rio. The players are subsidised so the fee is reduced from $750 down to $400.

ON SUNDAY about 20 keen runners took part in the annual Runners North half marathon, a distance of 21.1km. The event was scheduled to start at 6am to beat the heat, but a number of very keen runners were ready to go at 5am due to the confusion caused by the time on mobile phones automatically being put forward an hour during the night due to the start of daylight savings in the Southern states. The course started at the Lions park, wove through town and onto the start of the Rio Tinto bike track, then continued out past Wallaby Beach and returned the same way. It was an outstanding effort by all runners to complete the course in excellent times as the morning was humid and without even a breath of refreshing wind. On return to the Lions park the runners were greeted by a breakfast kindly provided by Rio Tinto Alcan. Category winners were presented with $100 gift vouchers from GTO - John Drysdale 1:43:24, Terri Dupe 1:50:03, Dave Outen 2:20:36, and Kaz Morrow 2:06:14.

New team at the Golf Club
Julie and Andrew Bridge ready for a new challenge at the Gove Country Golf Club. THERE are two new faces in town at the Gove Country Golf Club as a new manager has been appointed. Andrew and Julie Bridge are no strangers to Gove as Andrew has been coming over from Darwin to instruct students at local schools for a number of years. On his most recent trip he noticed the position for manager of the Club was being advertised and he and his wife thought it would be an ideal opportunity for them. They are working closely with the committee to take the Club forward. Andrew has been working as a professional golfer for eight years but said his main focus would be to ensure smooth running of the clubhouse before he ventured onto the course with lessons. In the matter of a month the couple has made the change packing up their house in Darwin and they arrived on Thursday, September 22 ready for the handover on Saturday. Andrew said he already had a strong grasp on the aspects of golfing and was gaining an understanding of the liquor and gaming regulations needed to run the club. The Waterfront Cafe runs independently in conjunction with the Club and operating hours will remain the same. Andrew is looking at ways to increase the membership as well as encouraging businesses to organise corporate golf days. “We will be providing basic golf lessons before these days to encourage non players to give it a go,” he said. He admits it will be a huge learning curve but is sure they can move the club forward with the support of the committee. Julie, whose background has been in the hospitality industry, said they were focusing on the family atmosphere at the club and would be tailoring activities along those lines. “We have a very strong junior section under the leadership of Allen Fanning and junior members are always encouraged to join. There are already free clinics for them every Sunday morning and these are proving increasingly popular. While the kids play the parents take the time to relax and catch up with friends at the club. “Juniors are always welcome to come along and we have spare clubs for those who don’t have their own.” The Club is open for social functions and special event and Andrew is open to suggestions fro organising events for the community. Andrew and Julie are looking forward to meeting the locals and encourage them to come along the the Gove Country Golf Club.
