By MARJO HALLOWELL IN ORDER to quash the buzz around town that a local Indigenous group is going bust the management of Laynhapuy Homelands Association Inc. (LHAI) stresses it is not in voluntary receivership. The general manager of Laynhapuy, Ric Norton confirmed that in September, due to concerns about their cashflow situation, the Board approached their major funding bodies in the Australian Government requesting assistance in managing this situation. “As part of the Australian Government’s response, Meertens Chartered Accountants were appointed as a Funds Controller only for Australian Government funds from mid October. In this role, Meertens reimburse LHAI and/or pay creditors directly for expenditure that LHAI incurs, in strict accordance with agreed funding budgets. Meertens also provides a government steering committee with ongoing advice as to LHAI’s financial position,” Mr Norton said. “LHAI continues to manage and have full responsibilities for those areas of its business that are not funded by the Australian Government. “The Board of Laynhapuy Homelands is continuing to work with the Australian Government to resolve the ongoing cashflow concerns. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Westpac Bank for its ongoing support to LHAI in managing this situation. “LHAI has every intention of meeting the commitments to our creditors, and we also thank them for their patience as we juggle payments in accordance with the income available to us each week.” A spokesperson for the Indigenous Affairs, Minister Jenny Macklin said Laynhapuy Home-

lands Association Inc. has advised the Australian Government that it is in a very fragile financial position. “In consultation with the Association’s Board, the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs has appointed a funding controller to administer funding provided by the Commonwealth to the organisation and review the Association’s current financial position,” she said. “Officers from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs are also working with the Association’s Board and other funding providers including the Northern Territory Government to agree on an appropriate way forward to resolve any governance, administration and financial management issues. “The Australian Government acknowledges the important role the Association plays in delivering services to the homelands in the region and will work to ensure services continue to be delivered to Yolngu people.” Laynhapuy has been operating for decades and is fundamentally important to the Yolgnu people.

It is a member based association of the Yolngu from the Laynhapuy, Djalkirripuyngu and Miyarrkapuyngu areas of north east Arnhem Land. Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said Laynhapuy have provided critical and core community services to around a thousand homelands residents in the east Arnhem region and government for many years and are also a major and successful employer of Indigenous people. “The Federal government, as the major grants funder, has responded swiftly to Laynha’s request for assistance and this is welcome news,” she said. standards of communications and infrastructure in homelands; and good health, social welfare, community development and educational outcomes - to promote, in all of its work, the common good and benefit of its members. In the decades prior to 1970, the Yolngu people in the East Arnhem region had been congregated in various missions. In April 1972, partly in response to the establishment of the nearby mining town, senior Aboriginal leaders resolved to move back to their traditional clan lands and sea country. Starting in the early 1970’s the Yolngu cleared their airstrips mainly by hand, and built their early houses using homeland timber and the residents’ own labour under the supervision of qualified builders. The Association continues to exist because of the strength and benefit Yolngu of the Homelands gain from working together and speaking with one voice to achieve their common objectives. These homelands are based up to 290km from Yirrkala and are spread across an area of some 10,000 square km including one off shore island. These homelands have a collective population of up to 1,000 residents during the dry season and about 700-800 during the wet.

Local student featured in calendar A LOCAL student is one of 13 to have her work featured in the 2012 Emergency Preparation and Response Calendar. Olive Griffin a year 3 student at Nhulunbuy primary school was delighted to learn her work had been included. Her mother, Lucy, said she encouraged students to enter and two from year 6, three from year 3 and one from year 2 entered. Olive said her drawing was about being prepared for a cyclone. “I went onto the internet and got some information and then I drew things we needed to get together in an emergency,” Olive said. “It was a long time ago as I was eight when I did it. I’m nine now.” Chief Minister Paul Henderson launched the calendar which provides information to Territorians on how to prepare for natural disasters last week. Mr Henderson said the calendar is the first of its kind for the NT and a great tool to get everyone, particularly children and their parents, thinking about how to prepare for natural disasters. “Natural disasters and emergencies are a way of life wherever you live in the world, including the Northern Territory,” Mr Henderson said “It’s important to be prepared, know the risks and have a plan for you and your family if there is a disaster. “This is particularly important in the Territory as we regularly experience cyclones, floods and bushfires. “Every family member, including children should be aware of their plans and that’s why it’s important to start developing awareness at a young age. “The calendar features the artwork of 13 Territory school children and reinforces the key safety messages of potential hazards and natural disasters. “Almost 700 entries from right across the Territory were received and the judges had a tough job.

ALL employment targets set under the three-year ‘Jobs NT’ plan have been exceeded ahead of time, Minister for Business, Delia Lawrie, said recently. “The Jobs NT plan is a bold initiative to help workers, employers and the wider community share in job opportunities,” Ms Lawrie said. “Launched in 2010, JobsNT sets aggressive targets in certain key areas to improve labour market performance and support economic and social growth. “With six months still to go, all targets have already been exceeded including indigenous employment, workforce growth and participation and young people achieving year 12 or equivalent qualifications. “The target of 3000 Indigenous Territorians commencing employment across the public and private sectors in the three years to 2012 has been met. “Territory labour force participation continues to exceed national participation rates at 73.7 per cent

versus a national figure of 65.7 per cent. “The growth of our workforce continues, with the number of employed persons in the Territory increasing by two per cent and the proportion of Territorians with a qualification at or above Certificate III increasing by 2.7 percentage points to 48.2 per cent. “Furthermore, the number of Territorian achieving a Year 12 or equivalent Certificate II qualification by 2012 has risen from 65.1 per cent in 2007 to 73.1 per cent in 2010, exceeding our target of a five per cent increase. With so many job opportunities on the horizon, it is an exciting time to be a Territorian. “Whether the first job out of school or the career of a lifetime, the Territory Government is delivering on preparing workers, employers and the wider community to contribute to and benefit from the opportunities associated with economic growth.”

Scammers now using SMS to get people THE Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, Gary Clements, has received an SMS claiming that he has won US$400,000 in Lotto, but it’s nothing more than a scam. Consumer Affairs is warning anyone receiving the message to delete it and not to reply to any request for personal information. Consumers are prompted to reply to the SMS via email, and if they do, they are then asked to send more personal information such as bank account numbers, Tax File numbers and birth dates. “Always remember that you cannot win a lottery that you have not entered,” Mr Clements said. “The scammers have randomly generated your mobile telephone number, so never respond to a message.

“This scam serves as a timely reminder about their increasingly personal nature. Scammers are finding ways to get information about your personal profile and use this to play on your relationships with people and organisations you know and trust.” Mr Clements said the effects of scams on victims can be devastating and scammers don’t discriminate - they’ll target anyone, using a myriad of ways to slip under your radar including phone calls, SMS, letter, email, fax, blog, online chat or dating services. Here are some tips to help you stay safe: Protect your identity - your personal details are private and invaluable - keep them away from

scammers. Don’t respond - ignore suspicious emails, letters, phone calls or text messages - press ‘delete’, throw them out or just hang up. Don’t let scammers push your buttons - scammers will play on your emotions to get what they want. Resist the personal touch watch out for scammers posing as someone that you know and trust, or pretending to know you. It is important to protect your identity and if you are suspicious that you have been scammed, report it to Consumer Affairs. in 2003 and had 30 people participating that year. Since then it has gone global and raises funds and awareness for men’s health issues, prostate cancer and depression. The Gove Mo Bros, a team of 23 Rio workers and their friends, raised about $7000 and the Arnhem Club with eight participants raised $700. Matt Fitzgerald from the Arnhem Club said he couldn’t wait to shave his growth off. “It’s been driving me nuts. It has been great to be part of something that is good for the community.”

Don’t drink and drive - Grab a cab POLICE are warning residents to make sure they abide by the law over the Christmas season as they will be dealing severely with offenders. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said they would be cracking down on offenders, particularly drink drivers. “There is no excuse for driving after you have had too much to drink. if you are found to be breaking the law. “As part of the campaign to keep people safe over the festive season we will also be checking car registrations and licenses. Anyone who has lived here for three months must transfer their registration. Vehicles that have been here for longer than three months and have not had their registration transferred are unregistered. This means not only are you driving an unregistered vehicle you are also uninsured and you will not qualify for compensation. “We are not aiming to spoil anyone’s Christmas, just trying to ensure everyone has a safe and happy one.”

Tax cuts for carbon in clean energy future LOW and middle income households are now guaranteed to receive tax cuts or rises in their payments following the passage of the Government’s Clean Energy Future legislation by the Senate. The Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon and Northern Territory Senator, Trish Crossin said that much of the additional revenue raised by the sale of carbon permits would be used to help households, with the expected small impact on the cost of living following the introduction of a carbon price on July 1, 2012. Mr Snowdon said that over 64,000 taxpayers throughout the Northern Territory will get a tax cut, with 53,000 taxpayers receiving at least $300 a year. “As part of the tax cuts that come with the carbon price legislation, if you earn less than $18,200 a year you will no longer have to pay tax, which will greatly benefit those working part-time across the Territory.” Across the Northern Territory more than

50,700 people will also receive household assistance through increases to their pension or family assistance payments. Mr Snowdon said specifically about 19,400 families will receive an increase in their family assistance payments which exceeds the potential cost of living increase due to the carbon price. “In fact, a dual income household with one child and a combined annual income of $75,000 will be more than $500 a year better off, through the family payment increases. The Government’s assistance package will also ensure that across the Northern Territory, more than: 19,100 pensioners will receive an extra $338 per year if the are single and up to $510 per year for couples combined; 3,900 single parents will get an extra $289 per year in increased income support; 11,100 job seekers will get up to $218 extra per year for singles and $390 per year for couples combined. Senator Crossin said the carbon price will

only be paid by around 500 of Australia’s biggest polluters, and that modelling, both independent and by federal treasury, showed the expected flow on price rises would be less than one cent in the dollar. “Pricing carbon has been supported by most leading economists, many prominent business leaders and every living federal Liberal leader before Tony Abbott, including former prime ministers John Howard and Malcolm Fraser, as the most effective and cheapest way to reduce carbon emissions.” “The passage of the Government’s Clean Energy Future legislation means we can now get on with the job of tackling climate change, and creating new clean energy jobs, while ensuring low and middle income households are not adversely impacted,” Senator Crossin said. Taking stock of emergency resources AS the cyclone season approaches the local emergency services are making sure they are able to handle whatever crisis which may arise. Recently the officer in charge of the Nhulunbuy Fire Service, Colin Snowden, visited the Nhulunbuy NTES to see what supplies and equipment they had. Mr Snowden said it was important to ensure each of the services knew what their responsibilities were and that they all work together. “It is important that we do not waste time wondering what is and is not available so by seeing what the NTES has in their storeroom and how they are set up is vital for an efficient operation. Captain of the NTES Ian Hovedon, showed Mr Snowden around the facility and Mr Snowden became aware of the capabilities of the volunteers. He was shown the generator and supplies as well as the new storm damage trailer. Mr Hoveden said the NTES in town had been attracting new members and training meetings were held every Tuesday at 7.30pm. “Some of the challenges we face are that some of our members work shifts so the more volunteers we have the more we will be able to help the public should emergencies arise. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can just come along to our meetings. There are also a lot of roles that need to be done apart from going out in the field and those wanting to learn more about how they can help out can also come along.”

Buckle up on remote buses BUS operators have until January 30 to take advantage of the latest round of grants and make school buses in regional communities safer for students that use them. Regional, rural and remote school bus operators have been urged to apply to the Australian Government for funds under round nine of the Seatbelts for Kids scheme to make their buses safer. Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Catherine King, called on local communities, schools and parents to encourage bus operators to apply under the scheme for a grant of up to $25,000. “Many regional school routes involve longer journeys at higher speeds. It’s important that our kids get to school safely and this funding assists in making that journey safer. It’s a simple but very important scenario,” Ms King said. The call for round nine applications came as the outcome of funding for round eight of the programme was announced. Under round eight of Seatbelts for Kids, an extra 35 buses were approved for funding, taking total approvals for the scheme to 313 buses from 147 operators. “With local schools, communities and families having a strong voice in regional areas, I ask them to encourage operators not to miss out on this opportunity to reduce the risk of injury to kids on school buses,” Ms King said. “Bus operators who have an existing contract with a state or territory government to provide school bus services on a recognised rural and regional school bus route can apply for funding to fit seatbelts to new buses or retrofit existing buses,” she said. NEW research providing critical information about how climate change is affecting Australia’s Pacific island neighbours and East Timor was released last month by the Australian Government’s Pacific Climate Change Science Program (PCCSP). The landmark, peer-reviewed publication, Climate Change in the Pacific: Scientific Assessment and New Research, presents the most comprehensive scientific analysis to date of climate change in the Pacific region. Co-editor of the report, the Bureau of Meteorology’s Dr Scott Power, said the findings would be presented at an event during the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference being held from next week in Durban, South Africa. “The research provides clear evidence of how the climate has changed across this region. For example, the past decade has been the warmest on record and ocean acidity levels are continuing to increase in response to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations,” Dr Power said. According to co-editor, CSIRO’s Kevin Hennessy, the research indicates future decreases in droughts in most parts of the Pacific and decreases in the frequency of tropical cyclones by the end of the century. “The research provides clear evidence of how the climate has changed across this region” “We also expect widespread increases in extreme rainfall events, large increases in the incidence of hot days and warm nights, increases in the proportion of tropical cyclones in the more intense categories and continued sea-level rise during this century,” Mr Hennessy said. The PCCSP has been working with national meteorological services and other partners in the Pacific to develop this climate knowledge and build the region’s capacity to undertake climate research. Salesa Kaniaha from the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazard Department said prior to the release of this research there had only been limited country-specific climate information available. “This report therefore addresses a crucial need for reliable information to help Pacific countries effectively plan for climate change,” Mr Kaniaha said. The report includes climate projections for Cook Islands, East Timor, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Mr Hennessy also announced that information about the future climate of these countries would be easily accessible via a new interactive online tool called Pacific Climate Futures. “Pacific Climate Futures allows the user to explore future changes in various aspects of the climate including temperature, rainfall, wind, sunshine and humidity for 20-year averages around 2030, 2055 and 2090 under three greenhouse gas emissions scenarios,” he said. The PCCSP is delivered by the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO and managed by the Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency in collaboration with AusAID as part of Australia’s five year, $328.2 million, International Climate Change Adaptation Initiative. Increased protective custody incidents POLICE have been busy over the last week detaining drunks in protective custody. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said they had been holding the offenders, who have been drunk in the street, overnight for their own safety. “At this time of year many people have their outdoor fridges well stocked and itinerants and youths are accessing any that are not correctly secured,” he said. “Residents need to ensure their alcohol is securely locked away in compliance with their permit conditions.”

Held over three days from November 25-27 the concert performance is held to showcase the talents of the ADA dancers aging from three years of age through to adult dancers. The programme featured dances in classical ballet, tap, contemporary, hip hop, Highland and boyz rock. The dances were choreographed by ADA principal teacher Rachael Wallis and ADA dance teachers Sharlene Cardilini, Melissa Kennedy and Ineke Wallis. Liz Stephenson from ADA said the concert was ablaze of spectacular costumes and wonderful dances by the 175 plus dance students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These concerts would not be able to go ahead without the assistance of parents, who help organise costumes

and help out front and back stage, our sponsors and supporters, our hard working committee, our wonderful dance teachers and of course the dancers,â&#x20AC;? she said. From the moment the first dancers took to the stage parents, family and friends were waiting for their own star performers to come on stage. From the tiny tots performing to Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a small World to the silver and gold medal tap dancers performing to Mamma Knows Best the concert highlighted the enthusiasm and talent of local dancers no matter what their age. The costumes were outstanding and all the dancers performed extremely well. It will be interesting to see how far some of the very talented and dedicated dancers will go in the field of dance. Training project skills up Groote workers THE Australian Government has provided funding to deliver training and dedicated employment support to 30 Aboriginal workers on Groote Eylandt. Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development, Mark Arbib and Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, said the $395,000 project to up skill workers will be managed by Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island Enterprises (GEBIE) Civil and Construction. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The project will provide accredited and non-accredited training to Aboriginal workers, creating valuable transferable skills to work on upcoming construction projects and pursue further employment opportunities on Groote Eylandt,â&#x20AC;? New committee at the Arnhem Club I ATTENDED the Arnhem Club AGM on Sunday which was attended by a small group of members with routine annual reporting including the announcement of the newly elected committee. Congratulations to Dave Mitchell who has been re-elected as president, Cassandra Brown as vice president, BJ Anderson as treasurer and general committee members include John Keogh, Patrick Mayer and Shane Goodwin. The secretary’s position along with a couple of spots for general committee remain vacant. With the audited report showing that the club’s finances are turning around for the better, I

think members can be confident that under the stewardship of the new committee and management that the club will continue to improve and consolidate. From the floor, members offered constructive suggestions to the committee about positive initiatives which would attract more families to patronise the club. Stats show Australians are happy with medical treatment AT least 80 per cent of people felt their health professional always or often spent enough time with them, listened carefully to them and had shown them respect according to a new report recently released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. When asked if they felt that their health

professional had spent enough time with them: 95 per cent felt that dental professionals had always or often done so; 88 per cent felt that GPs had always or often done so, and 80 per cent felt that emergency department doctors and specialists had always or often done so.

Local success for CRS job seekers Arafura

Susan Ashley at the Ghunmarnj Centre. OVER its 70 year history, CRS Australia has helped tens of thousands of Australian job seekers with a disability, injury or health condition towards meaningful employment that has changed their lives and given them hope, belonging, conﬁdence and independence.

These job seeker journeys can be inspiring. You wouldn’t be able to tell just by looking at her, but the smiling, confident woman serving your coffee as you visit Ghunmarn Culture Centre in Beswick a bit over a year ago would have had trouble saying hello to you. Susan Ashley was first referred to CRS Australia in August of 2007. At that time, Susan had never worked, had minimal spoken English and was experiencing complications with her prosthetic eye. But Susan did not want to give up. From her first appointment, she made it clear that she wanted to work. “I wanted to work to help my family and improve my skills,” Susan said. Over the next 18 months, CRS Australia provided assistance and support to Susan. This included identifying her strengths and skills, applying for jobs and liasing with the local medical clinic to ensure timely management of her health condition. During this time Susan remained positive and continued to look for local jobs. “I had some relatives working at the Culture Centre and thought I’d be good as a

cleaner there,” she said. Although no jobs were available, Susan turned up anyway to help out and get some experience. Her determination, persistence and commitment to gaining skills on the job led to the manager offering Susan a job. “Susan’s potential far outweighed her health challenges,” said Fleur Parry, development manager for Djilpin Arts which runs the culture centre. “We’re committed to empowering community and individuals.” Susan was offered a part-time position in July 2009 and CRS Australia continued to support Susan’s employment for a further six months. During this time Susan’s conﬁdence continued to grow as she learned skills in hospitality and gallery retail. Susan is still working at the centre and loves her job. “I even got to travel to Melbourne and Darwin with art exhibitions and help in the collection of bush materials for cultural programmes,” she said. “Work has made me proud of myself.” Susan’s story is just one example of how lives have been changed with help from CRS Australia.

Centrelink clients targetted CENTRELINK customers are being warned of a new phone scam with callers claiming to be from Centrelink. Minister for Human Services Tanya Plibersek said in recent weeks, they have received reports of scams targeting Centrelink customers and urges them to be vigilant. “In this latest scam, people are being called by someone pretending to work for Centrelink claiming they are owed a Centrelink payment of up to several thousand dollars,” Ms Plibersek said. “The caller then instructs the person to send money, usually several hundred dollars via cheque, in order to release the funds. Unfortunately, some people have fallen for this scam and have lost their money. “It’s important to remember that Centrelink would never call anyone and ask for money - for any reason.” “If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from Centrelink and you are suspicious, ask for the person’s name and phone number and tell them you’ll call them back. Then ring Centrelink and report the matter.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission received 42,000 reports of scams and reported losses totalling more than $63 million to scams during 2010. The ACCC observed increases in scammers impersonating representatives from well-known government departments and private companies. Many of these scams were also delivered through unsolicited telephone calls. Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer David Bradbury said people should not comply with what the scammers want, and importantly, not send anyone money. “Unscrupulous people who perpetrate scams often target the most vulnerable in the community such as the elderly and people from non-English speaking backgrounds,” he said. “I urge anyone who suspects they have received a scam phone call to report any details to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on 1300 795 995.” Further information about scams can also be found at www.scamwatch. gov.au.

Glasgow Rangers to host soccer clinic

The Glasgow Rangers. ScOTTiSH soccer giant Glasgow Rangers is set to hold junior coaching clinics in Darwin. Sport Minister karl Hampton said next year’s clinics are a huge coup for the Territory’s young soccer talent. “Ensuring Territorians have access to a wide range of facilities and activities that enhance the great Territory lifestyle is a key target within the Territory 2030 strategic plan,” Mr Hampton said.

“Soccer is the fastest growing sport in the Territory and that’s why we have invested more than $8.5m towards the sport in the past five years including construction of Larrakia Park in Darwin. “i congratulate local club Mindil Aces and NT Loyal - the local Rangers Supporters group - for securing the coaching clinic that will be held for Territory juniors in Darwin June next year.”

The clinic would be held from June 25-29 next year. Mindil Aces president Peter campos said there are 100 places available with an early bird special of $360 per child offered until February 29 or registrations are completed. “The Club is pleased to confirm the coaching clinic on St Andrew’s Day (November 30) which is the National Day of Scotland,” Mr campos said. “The clinic will give kids in the

Local coach works with NT team Nicky Mayer from Gove Tennis club returned from Melbourne last week where she was coaching the NT 14U boys team at the National Teams event. Unfortunately there were no athletes from Gove playing. The boys did well finishing seventh from eight but almost made it to the play offs for five and six. They competed against NSW, SA, Victoria and Queensland in the semis and Tasmania in the final play off for seven and eight. Other teams were WA and NZL. Last meet for the year for motorcycle club By TONY FOSTER Motorbikes roared around the track on Sunday, November 27 for the last event for the Nhulunbuy Motorcycle club for 2011. The final wet season round of the Pony Express series was well represented by senior riders with 16 entries. Unfortunately we had one starter that had a mechanical failure at the start of the event and was an additional number to the spectator crowd. The crowd numbers were equal to an earlier event this year with around 50 spectators and family in attendance. The event was contested over a four km circuit of existing bush tracks and starting off with one lap of the motocross track. The event was for two hours duration. Riders had the option to pair up ( true meaning of Pony Express ) or the Ironman option. All riders took the Ironman option. Many of the riders sprinted the first three to four laps with very quick lap times. Peter McCormack claimed the honour of fastest lap time with six minutes flat. The heat had an immediate effect on the fast riders causing rest breaks to be taken. Some of the riders took the option to pace themselves and limiting their rest breaks to achieve a better overall average lap time. Some aspects of the track provided some challenges with narrow tracks, sand, rock, washouts and log obstacles across various sections of the track. The minor places were fiercely contested for the first 10 laps with second through to fifth constantly challenged. From 11 laps onwards the heat, endurance fitness, mechanical failure and some minor crashes forced the retirement of 15 per cent of the field. The overall winner of the event was Paul Gilmore with 17 Laps, two laps clear of second place on the Quad-Raptor - Bojan Budja and third place with 14 Laps - Nick Twomey. The juniors enjoyed the morning with a lap practice to train using their skills learned in the Daniel Jones on a Honda CRF450. coaching clinics through the year. The juniors were well supported by the parents keeping a keen eye on plumes of dust from all sections of the motocross track. Plenty of ice cold water was on hand along with St John Ambulance whose volunteers attended without any incident. The club wishes to thank St John for their assistance throughout the events this year. Thanks also go to Tanya Foster for the clubs pictures and posters through 2011. Thanks also to the ladies that have helped the club out with the barbecues at the events. The club wishes to thank the NLC for their valuable support with the earthmoving equipment through the year, LHAI and YBE also for their support. The club will be actively fundrasing later this year and into 2012 to raise around $18,000 for fencing material to fence the track venue. The MLA for Nhulunbuy, Lynne Walker has kick started the clubs fundraising with a $1,000 donation to the club. Sponsorship is sought from businesses in Nhulunbuy to assist this community club develop. Motorcycling Australia, the governing body for Motorcycle sport in Australia, require the club to have a secure venue as a pre-requisite for a venue licence. The venue licence is required to allow racing to be conducted in Nhulunbuy. Once the licence is issued open meetings may be conducted with other clubs in the NT. Darwin and Katherine motorcycle clubs are keen to compete in Gove as soon as the licence is issued. The 2012 Calendar for NMCC has events to cater for all types of off road bike riders with events happening every three weeks. Some of the events have been moved from the Sunday to a Saturday to cater for shift workers providing more opportunities to ride with the club. Dion Muirhead on the track.
