Dog attack at International Women’s Middle Beach Day kicks off in Gove By MARJO HALLOWELL A DOCTOR was attacked by dogs as he went for a walk on Middle beach last week. The locum, who is based in Yirrkala for a month, was walking along the beach when three dogs attacked him. He was forced to go, bleeding from his injuries, into the water to get away from the attacking pack and the dogs were called off by their owners once they saw what was happening. They were several hundred metres away when the attack occurred. It is believed the three hunting-type dogs were let out of their owner’s vehicle and let run down to the beach. The doctor was forced into the water facing additional dangers with stingers and crocodiles which could have been attracted by the blood from his wounds. He suffered a bite to the chest wall, buttocks and arm and felt the only way to get away from the dogs was to head into the water. A very traumatised doctor was treated on the beach by the female dog owner before he headed to a friend’s house in Nhulunbuy to get properly patched up. The male owner of the dogs continued his walk up the beach with the dogs. The attack happened at 5.20pm on February 29 and was reported to Nhulunbuy Police at 7.15pm. The matter was reported to the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited on Friday and compliance officer Rick Stephen said he could not go to Yirrkala to interview the doctor as it was not on the town lease. Mr Stephen said he phoned the victim to get the details. “I have written to the owner of the dogs as they are residing on the town lease and as of Monday I am still waiting for a response from them,” he said. “The dogs are at risk of being deemed dangerous and we are investigating the
incident even though it was off the town lease. “We will be keeping an eye on them to ensure they stay out of trouble and do not attack anyone else. “Pet owners are responsible to keep their animals under control and too often we see people not take this responsibility seriously,” he said. Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said Police had reported the matter to the Corporation and did not realise that it was not within their (the Corporation’s) authority to deal with the matter. “We are now continuing investigations into the matter and tightening up the procedures,” he said. Executive officer at Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation Steve Roeger said there was no policy regarding dogs on the beach as part of the permit system. “We are now raising this issue with the Board to see what guidelines need to be put in place,” Mr Roeger said. “I would think if the dogs were registered with the Corporation as residing on the town lease the Corporation would have the jurisdiction to deal with them regardless of where an incident took place. “We will liaise with the police and the Corporation to manage this situation.” The doctor was over six foot tall and a solid build and sustained serious injuries. Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker said she was alarmed to learn of this attack and especially the viciousness of it. “I share the concerns of the victim and others that had it been a child the outcome could have been tragic. “I have spoken with police, Dhimurru and Nhulunbuy Corporation to seek clarity around reporting of such attacks and consequences for dog owners who fail to control their animals. “Owners must be responsible for their dogs at all times whether on or off the town lease.”
International Women’s Day was celebrated on the weekend with a lunch and an Aussie Rules football match. Jenny Heath, Fiona Marika, Rakrakapui Marika and Emma Kennedy showed their team spirit before the match. For more coverage from the event see pages 10-11, 15 and 18 >>

Donna Birch, Elenie Bromot, Lynne Walker and Treacy Harry at the lunch. By MARJO HALLOWELL WOMEN in Nhulunbuy joined with women across the world to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and the Territory Government’s theme this year was Strong Leadership, Strong Women, Strong Territory. Officially on March 8 in Nhulunbuy it was celebrated on Saturday with a lunch and on Sunday with a women’s football (Aussie Rules) match at Hindle oval. IWD is a global day for women that focuses attention on the achievements and progress made by and for women locally, nationally and internationally and brings to the forefront that not all women share equally in the same freedoms and rights as supported by the United Nations. Organised by Celebrating Women in the North (CWIN) and Lynne Walker the lunch at Macassans was sold out early last week. Mrs Walker introduced the guest speaker,
Wendy Troe, who had the women at the lunch in tears and laughter as she gave her address. She told of her own experience, ‘raw and unplugged’ as she shared in the passing of one of her closest friends. Mrs Troe detailed how a group of 15-yearolds all rallied around her friend’s daughter with pink ribbons in their hair. “They already know about support - they have pride and confidence,” she said. “The strength of women passes through generations and we need to value our own strengths.” Mrs Troe shared messages from her grandmother who would be 100 this week had she lived. “She could deliver the sharpest message in the softest way. One of her messages was relating the destructive power of secrets. Let it go - life is too short for grudges.” The power of support was her strongest message and the women in the room all agreed.
Treacy Harry was the master of ceremonies in the absence of CWIN founders Wendy Gordon and Jennifer Kerr and told the women about the history of their international day. “The main theme this year is ‘Unite to End Violence Against Women’,” she said. On Sunday afternoon there was an Aussie Rules match at Hindle Oval between the Latram Lions and the East Woody Eagles. Minister for Women’s Policy Malarndirri McCarthy, said Territory women have celebrated International Women’s Day since 1976. “This is a special day for all women across the world when we share our achievements, our strengths and our aspirations as women,” she said. “International Women’s Day is also about acknowledging that there are still millions of women and girls who are fighting for their freedom and equality, and who need the help and support of strong women and strong leadership.”
Rio tightening its belt for sustainability

LAST week Rio Tinto Alcan announced a possible 600 job losses over two years at it’s Bell’s Bay smelter which caused reaction from the Australian Workers’ Union who was told the Tasmanian aluminium smelter can survive the current manufacturing downturn. General manager Gove Operations Frank Willsdon reiterated and said the aluminium sector in Australia is facing tough market conditions in the form of a high exchange rate, higher costs of production and low aluminium prices. “At Gove Operations we can’t control market conditions. However by making ourselves as efficient as possible, we can help sustain our business,” Mr Willsdon said. “We have identified a number

of productivity improvements and cost savings in areas such as energy use, project expenditure and the elimination of all forms of waste. “We are working closely with our people to deliver the necessary improvements. “Productivity improvements at Gove Operations will enable us to operate with less people in the future. With respect to staff, this will occur through people naturally leaving the business rather than redundancies.” He said there was no clear indicator as to how many people would not be replaced once they left. “We will consider roles as they come up and determine if they could be filled by reallocating people internally. “The health and safety of
our people remains our number one priority. We will ensure there are sufficient resources to continue to provide a safe working environment. “Our focus is to make the business resilient through all parts of the economic cycle, including taking into account external factors such as the carbon price and strength of the Australian dollar. “Part of our plan is to ensure both Gove Operations and the town have a successful and sustainable future.” On a global level the Rio Aluminium Smelter in Lynemouth (UK) will be closing in May with over 500 job losses. The closure of that smelter will have no direct impact on the mining of bauxite or production of alumina in Gove.

FaFT puts families first THE Families as First Teachers (FaFT) program at Yirrkala is engaging up to 40 babies, toddlers and their parents each month. FaFT recognises that the early years of a child’s life are critical for learning and development and targets children up to three years. It aims to encourage learning through play and to prepare children for pre-school. Parents or other family members are involved in all the playgroup activities and no child attends the playgroup alone. Other service providers become involved, for example, by presenting nutrition and health messages through the playgroup activities. Every community develops programmes and a schedule to suit its needs. At Yirrkala the playgroup meets at the FaFT centre three days a week, it’s set up outside the health clinic once a week, and on the other day it goes on a bush trip. Last year those children who were ready for pre-school this year were ‘danced’ from the FaFT building to the pre-school where they received Family educator Abigail White and family liaison officer Bernadette Foster recently attended a three day FaFT workshop in Darwin. certificates.

NHULUNBUY RSPCA is working with the Gove Veterinary Services in a bid to get as many animals desexed as possible. The RSPCA is offering free delivery service to pet owners getting their animals desexed. Bev Goodchild, from the RSPCA, said desexing had many benefits for both owners and pets. “Desexed pets make better pets, she said. “Registration fees are significantly cheaper and pets are less likely to
wander, run away or fight. “Your desexed pets will live longer healthier lives and their risks of mammary cancer and uterine infections are reduced. “We at RSPCA really don’t want to euthanise dogs or cats just because we can’t find a home for them due to overpopulation. Volunteer Sarah Howland said they were offering to pick up animals and take them to the vet and then bring them home again. “Pet owners need to make an
appointment with the vet before they call us, she said. “This service is just for desexing and we will work in with shift workers regarding pick up and drop off times. Gove vet Sue Samuelsson said people did need to make sure they made an appointment before calling the RSPCA. “We are happy to work with the RSPCA and appreciate this service they are providing, Dr Samuelsson said.

Frank Willsdon is the new general manager Gove Operations at Pacific Aluminium
IT IS two months since the arrival of the new general manager Gove Operations at Pacific Aluminium (formerly Rio Tinto Alcan). Frank Willsdon took over from the previous GM Julio Costa earlier this year and already feels the great sense of community that exists in the area. This is his first position with the mining giant having worked in the petro-chemical industry for more than 30 years. He and his family have spent significant times in Australia, South East Asia, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. His home is in Sydney where his wife is still living and working as a teacher and he plans to visit one weekend a month. Three adult children work in Sydney and Brisbane. “I am the site manager so it is important that I spend most of my time up here,” he said. “My wife came up for the first two weeks to help me settle in as I hit the deck running and her help in setting up my home here was invaluable.” Mr Willsdon is looking forward to the outdoor life on offer up on the peninsula and intends to get out there and explore as much of it as he can. Keen on sport he sees the community spirit among his employees through their involvement in a wide range of sports and leisure activities as well as their commitments to one another. There will be a number of changes made as the Gove Operations goes through the transition to Pacific Aluminium although it is still owned by Rio Tinto Alcan. “By the end of this month we expect to be operating independently as a stand-alone entity and will no longer be referred to as Rio. “Given the depressed state of the aluminium market there is much work to be done to return Gove Operations to becoming a profitable business. “We can expect the next couple of years to be tough, however, we are committed to the task of making Gove both successful in the short term and sustainable for the longer term. “As from March 31 we will be independent from Rio and will be a small and agile company. Outside the multi national we will have more opportunities to have our own say as to the direction we are taking. “This should enthuse people and make it more of a success. “We are a manufacturing site and we are leading up to a sale. “There will be some impact on staff. When people leave we will need to re-access to see if they need to be replaced or whether their work can be spread out for others. “With the normally high turnover we will experience some tough times but in the long term we will become more efficient. “We all want to stay and our response is to get in shape to ensure we do. “Working with the Traditional Owners and a strong leadership team we are determined to make the site a success.” Mr Willsdon said he came up here for the challenge and was glad Rio has given him the opportunity to have a go.
Man throws chair at woman A SENTENCE has been deferred for a man who pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. The 35-year-old had been drinking on January 7 before losing at cards. He started cursing his ancestors when one of the women in the group told him to stop. The man then got up and threw a chair which hit the 70-year-old woman in the head. His lawyer, Lindy Harland, said the man had previously been on an outstation and moved in to town so his eldest child could attend high school. “He does have substance abuse issues, mainly alcohol, and sometimes gets into trouble. He does not have a great recollection of what happened,” she said. “He is a payday drinker and has some gambling issues. He has since made up with his grandmother. He will be attending the family violence program and has not been to rehabilitation before.” Magistrate Greg Smith deferred his sentence until April 4 for reports.

Interpreters trained in court INTERPRETERS were getting some on the job training at Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court last week. Seven students from Yirrkala and Ski Beach took on the challenge to train as interpreters not only for the courts but also other government departments and community organisations. They started their training on Tuesday and had their first taste of court on Wednesday and Thursday. They needed to become familiar with terminologies used during court proceedings and translate for defendants in court. One of the trainees, Melanie Herdman said it was interesting work. “We did some role play yesterday (Tuesday) and today we are dealing with the real thing. It is a very interesting job,” she said. Aboriginal Interpreter Service trainer, Vivien Britza said there were three languages represented among the seven students. “Corrections and other court based services are using us more now and we hope other organisations will also make sure they use a qualified interpreter. “These people are trained to interpret and people should avoid using family members and especially children who are not familiar with the technical terminologies. The qualified interpreters are also impartial and aware of confidentiality and cultural issues within the community. “The students are hungry to learn and the services in the community now have more interpreters to draw on ensuring there is no excuse for them not being able to communicate with clients in their own language.”

Man ordered to pay for smashed door A 25 YEAR-OLD boilermaker was ordered to pay $3960 restitution for damaging property, fined a further $1000 and ordered to pay three $40 levies when he appeared in Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court last week. He was one of two men who pleaded guilty to failing to leave premises when requested and disorderly behaviour in view of the public. The boilermaker also pleaded guilty to damaging property. Both men appeared separately and were unrepresented. On February 11 they were asked to leave the Walkabout as they did not meet the dress code and both became abusive and aggressive. At 8.20pm the duty manager at the Flinders Bar told them the singlets they were wearing did not comply with dress standards and both the accused became argumentative and challenged security staff. They then went outside and pointed at staff making throat-slitting gestures with one man head butting the glass door and smashing it. The boilermaker said he did not remember the incident as he was too intoxicated as he had already been drinking spirits. The man said he had been barred from the hotel for 12 months following the incident and no longer had a liquor permit so he could not purchase alcohol. “I did apologise and called the Walkabout regarding replacing the glass but they never got back to me,” he said. Magistrate Greg Smith said he needed to confront his drinking. “It’s one thing to be drunk but you were carrying on like a two-bob watch,” Mr Smith said. “You need to rein in your conduct.” The man was fined $500 cumulatively for failing to leave premises and disorderly behaviour and a further $500 on the damages charge. He was told if he failed to pay the restitution he could face 39 days in gaol. When questioned by police the following day the second man, a 23 year-old tradesman with Rio, said he had a shirt with him but wasn’t given a chance to put it on. In court he said he did not remember half of what happened. The man said he lived with his father and his fiance lived here as well. He said he had expenditure of $4 a month rent and also had car and phone payments. In fining him $300 and ordering him to pay two $40 levies, magistrate Greg Smith said hotels had the right to a dress code. Mr Smith said, “If in the hotel comply with the rules.”

Are your Ducks in front of you, or are they behind? W
hen clients visit me for property portfolio coaching the reasons they give for wanting to be a property investor are often many and varied. The two most common reasons are that they want to minimise personal income tax and at the same time build wealth in property for the future. Both of these goals are achievable but I have long believed based on personal experiences in my 30 years of property investment that your future is created by what you do today not tomorrow. Property investment, bank lending criteria and Australian tax laws are constantly changing and what may be the case today can quickly change tomorrow, and as such the planning for any future changes including personal changes must always be factored into the equation. With smart use of modern day banking products that help to control money and leave emergency funds for unexpected circumstances all property investments goals can be achieved, unfortunately I find it is the one area that most investors miss. They spend hours looking for the right property and then take the first finance product (mortgage) that the bank or Mortgage Broker offers them. I have said for many
years now that good safe property investors get all their little ducks in front of them not behind. A good example of this was the valuable lesson I learnt back in 1988 as a bullet proof 29 year old with a mortgage and quickly growing family to feed. Interest rates had risen to 18% and as the bullet proof property investor I had five mortgages plus the one I was living in and although times were tight financially I had decided with my wife to work a part-time second job until interest rates returned to more normal levels. A sudden illness in my immediate family that required both more of my time and support put an end to my little plan. Not to worry, the illness although serious would be beaten and all I needed to do was go cap in hand to the bank and borrow some more money to cover the mortgage payments and until life returned to normal. Mr Bullet Proof was fine, after all I had heaps of equity in all of my properties, how wrong I was, the bank looked at me differently and would not lend any more money because I had stopped working. It’s a long story and we got through it, but they were very tough and stressful times. The lessons gained from that experience I am sure made me the

It taught me to make available to myself funds for emergency that were always in place at a time that I was of optimal risk to the bank. If things changed in the future it didn’t matter because I had funds available for any change of life situation. From that moment on I had my money (ducks) in front of me and not my money (ducks) behind me. This made property investment and the debt involved, in my opinion much safer and more a managed risk. As I look back over the years and the many twists and turns life has taken since, I realise that my personal
portfolio of 80 odd investment properties would never have been achieved without that defining moment. Property investment is a great game that will stand you in excellent shape for the future but it must be done safely in a personal environment that is comfortable. As part of Adayoun’s ongoing commitment to our many coaching clients in Nhulunbuy, on Monday, March 26, Ross and the Adayoun team will conduct my free presentation of “Wealth through Knowledge” at the Walkabout Hotel at 7.15pm. Nursery is women’s business
Manager Sharon Gurruwiwi in front with, Jennifer Yunupingu, Dana Yunupingu and Johnny Dhurrkay, 18mths, at the nursery which is set to open to the public soon. WOMEN in Ski Beach have been learning retail and horticultural skills in view of a plant nursery opening in their community. Manager of the nursery Sharon Gurruwiwi said she had already been training for almost three years and the nursery and coffee shop are expected to open later this month. “This is a good opportunity for women to get a job and learn new skills,” she said. Situated in Ski Beach they can provide a variety of plants local to the area that require little care and attention once they are established. Along with her team of women they have been collecting seeds and nurturing the plants so they are ready for sale. They have used their plants at the new transitional school and have also been landscaping some of the homes within the community. By creating a coffee shop, Gopi Cafe, they will be able to cater for people coming out from Nhulunbuy to buy plants from the nursery or go on a cultural trail walk that they have also been working on. They will also be able to buy woodwork and art work from the nearby woodworking centre. The Cafe has been built using remnants of a tent frame with work completed by local labourers and qualified tradesmen. Janet Howath has been providing the training and is looking forward to seeing the women run the business on their own. Chief executive officer of the Gumatj Corporation Klaus Helm said this was an ideal opportunity to provide work for the women in the community. “We have a number of projects underway for the men but we also needed to ensure we could provide work for the women as well,” he said.
Man now has boat safety gear A MAN, 39, who was ordered to produce receipts last month for boat safety equipment, did so at Nhulunbuy Maguistrates Court last Wednesday. He was placed on a good behaviour bond and ordered to pay a bond of $500 on each of the two charges of failing to carry suitable equipment and a further $40 levy on each charge. Magistrate Greg Smith said if he comes back to court again within 12 months he would face the original two charges as well.

Eventful weekend for women in Gove
Electoral News
by NT Member for Nhulunbuy LYNNE WALKER TWO special events over the weekend have reinforced what I’ve always known, and that is that our community is home to
many strong, resilient, determined and incredibly friendly women. International Women’s Day was celebrated at a sell-out lunch at The Arnhem Club last Saturday and an inaugural women’s Aussie Rules game on Sunday. The lunches are expected to continue, hopefully every couple of months, under the banner of CWIN (Celebrating Women in the North) which was started more than a year ago by Wendy Gordon and Jennifer Kerr in a bid to provide a networking forum for women; to meet new people, discuss matters of concern and listen to a guest speaker. Wendy Troe as our speaker on Saturday
was memorable and moving. And such was the success of the footy game, that training will continue on Wednesdays at 5.30pm for any women who would like to have a go with a view to perhaps a monthly game. Special thanks must go to Richie Seden and Vernon Patullo who have devoted many hours to coaching and encouraging the players. It was especially good to see the large number of Yolngu women who participated and the friendships that have emerged for everyone involved. Arriving in an isolated com-

munity like ours can be a difficult time especially for women who are removed from their family support networks. There are many opportunities for women to meet and connect and I’m always happy to steer people in the right direction as well as listen to suggestions as to how we can better support women who are new to town. Good luck - and I hope good weather - for the Airnorth Women’s Fishing Competition this weekend which I continue to support with sponsorship. With 54 teams and a total of 158 participants, the event is clearly very, very popular.
Work in progress on raised garden beds for wheelchair access.
MACHADO Joseph Disease (MJD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative condition. MJD is found internationally but the highest prevalence in the world is in North East Arnhem Land. MJD occurs because of a fault in a chromosome that results in the production of an abnormal protein. This protein causes nerve cells to die prematurely in a part of the brain called the cerebellum. The damage to the cerebellum initially causes muscular weakness and progresses over time to a total lack of voluntary control and very significant permanent physical disability. MJD is an inherited, autosomal dominant disorder, meaning that each child of a person who carries the defective gene has a 50 per cent chance of developing the disease. In addition the mutation is typically expanded when it is passed to the next generation (known as an anticipation effect) and this means that symptoms of the disease appear around eight to 10 years earlier and are more severe. There is no known cure for MJD. Progression to dependence occurs over five to 10 years and most people are wheelchair bound and fully dependent for activities of daily living within 10-15 years of the first symptoms emerging. Individuals with MJD retain their intellect.

NEW housing was allocated to those in need on Groote Eylandt under the Federal Government Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program (SIHIP) in late 2011 and early 2012. People and families living with Machado Joseph Disease (MJD) were identified as being in need and the MJD Foundation worked with the SIHIP team to advocate for those needs. When those people were allocated new houses they asked the MJD Foundation for help in building new gardens. The MJD Foundation, which is a charity established in 2008 to improve the quality of life of Indigenous Australians and their families living with MJD in Arnhem Land and beyond, supported by BHP Billiton, Bunnings Warehouse Darwin, Toll Marine Logistics and Territory Alliance, sent a team into their clients’ new homes to perform a garden makeover including wheelchair accessible raised garden beds. The MJD Foundation’s manager of community cervices Simone McGrath said activities like gardening are part of the MJD Foundation’s Staying Stronger for Longer therapy programme on Groote. “It was a little crazy to take on the project in 37 degree heat and 100 per cent humidity but everyone had a ball,” she said. MJD Foundation’s executive officer Nadia Lindop said to have so much support for this project has been great. “Every organisation we asked was really enthusiastic about contributing. BHP Billiton (GEMCO) was our main financial donor,” Ms Lindop said. “In-kind sponsorship came from Bunnings who donated tools, Toll Marine Logistics sent everything over on the barge and Territory Alliance provided dirt and a bobcat.” said Joyce Lalara, MJD Foundation Aboriginal community worker said, “It is so good that we can help with these gardens. We can look after our families who are sick with MJD and they can enjoy a garden in their new house. We’re going to have big new mango trees, paw paws and bananas”.

NEWS
Debut journey leads from LA to Yirrkala THE debut album of East Journey is set to launch in Yirrkala on March 30. Guwak is the extraordinary debut album from the young Aboriginal band from the Yolngu Homelands. The Yirrkala launch will be from 5pm to 9pm and Mandawuy Yunupingu will be a special guest. The mainstream launch of the album will be in April, through MGM distribution in Sydney. Production of the album started in 2010 when it was recorded at Subsonic in Darwin, Level 7 Studios in Sydney and mastered in Los Angelas. Matt Cunliffe with executive producer and manager Susan Sandery Marawili both worked on the Garrangali album, which won the NT Indigenous Music Award for ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Music Video of the year’ in 2010. Forming some years ago under the direction of front man Rrawun Maymuru, and reforming in 2010 with some new additions, East Journey reflect the manikay (songs) of North East Arnhem Land. Rrawun Maymuru is a star on the rise having penned the song Bayini on Gurrumul’s current album and picking up the award for new emerging talent at
the National Indigenous Music Awards in 2012. Other band members include Ses Fury Frank, Marcus Marawili, Wulkwwulku Marawili, PJ White, Ngalkanbuy Mununggurr, Banul Garawirrtja, Arian Pearson and Gathapura Mununggurr. Like Yothu Yindi before them East Journey has a deep spiritual relationship with their land and sea country. These relationships, in part, are maintained through song, dance and ceremony. Public aspects of this relationship are found in the band’s recordings and live performances. Their inspiration and material are drawn from ceremonial song poetry, traditional melodies and instruments and, through guidance and encouragement from their own people, it is fused with western musical traditions to create what they call ‘saltwater reggae’. East Journey has recently established the East Journey Aboriginal Corporation to encourage youth to continue their education and to get behind their respective communities. They believe that sharing their stories through music is a way of engaging not only local Yolngu youth, but also wider mainstream Australia and potentially the international community.

Mitch needs a home
Bonny baby Selena, James, Elysia and Cooper welcome baby Fletcher Reid Davies to the family. Fletcher was born at Gove District Hospital on February 8 and weighed 3.996 kg (8lb 8ozs) and was 54 cm long. The family extends a huge thanks to the staff at Ward 2 especially Louise, Tracy and Dr Sarah.
MITCH is a 12-month-old male bull mastiff cross (a Molly puppy). Mitch is a handsome lad who would love an active home with another older dog not only as a companion, but to help him learn appropriate dog behaviour as his exuberance to play is always friendly but not always respectful. While he is boisterous, he has a beautiful nature and settles with consistent training and regular exercise. Mitch has been assessed and passed by an accredited dog behaviourist program. If you think you can give Mitch the home he deserves and would like to come and say hello please phone RSPCA on 0437 526 502.

So long as you trust to your intuition, you shouldn’t go far wrong. Romance. A friend who contacts you from out of the blue may not realise how busy you are. Don’t miss a chance to get together with this person, however, because they have an important message for you.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) A small change to your daily routine will help to reduce the amount of stress. At first it may be difficult to adapt to the new regime. Romance. A comment from a stranger will help you to feel more positively about your appearance. This person is very interested in you, but is too shy to make a move.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Don’t be too quick to blame someone else for problems which were nobody’s fault. You need to put this problem behind you and move onto other, more important, things. Romance. A friend who understands your partner very well will be able to give you some advice. Listen carefully to what they have to say.

Ladies briefed for 2012 fishing competition WITH a record number of entries this year the 2012 Airnorth is on this weekend and the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club held a briefing and clinic on Sunday. There are 158 entrants, up on the 112 from last year, in 48 teams. Organiser of the event Karyn Laverty said this was a great result. “Like most years the bulk of the entrants came in in the last week,” she said. The ladies who have entered the competition were given an outline of the instructions and rules of the two day competition which is set down for this weekend, March 17 and 18. This is the second year of the catch and release rules with anglers measuring, photographing and releasing their catches ensuring the sustainability of fishing in the region. The Look Good Feel Better program has been chosen as the charity to benefit from the competition this year. The Amateur Fishermen’s Association of NT Inc (AFANT) hosted the clinic after the briefing to give the ladies tips in readiness The organising committee Raewyn Huddy, Karyn Laverty, Ellie Burrow, Hannah Seanigger and Jacquie Knivett. for the big weekend ahead.

Nhulunbuy Motorcycle Club encourages new members
Ladies kick on for International Women’s Day
A great kick following some intense play. AS part of the International Women’s Day a friendly Aussie Rules was played at Hindle Oval on Sunday. The game was between the Latram Lions and East Woody Eagles A last minute goal saw the near draw become a victory for the Latram Lions scoring 24 points to East
Woody Eagles 18. Best player for Lions was Tullie and for Eagles it was Dimurru. Although this was to be a one off event the girls are keen to continue so practice will remain on Wednesdays at 5.30pm at Hindle oval.
David Bromot,6, gets the feel of a bike as Tony Foster looks on. THE Nhulunbuy Motorcycle Club held the weekly sausage sizzle at Endeavour Square last weekend. Supported by Woolworths who supply goods for the sausage sizzle to participating clubs at cost they also cover insurance for the stall holders and arrange booking through the Corporation. Club president Tony Foster said it was an ideal opportunity for them to show members of the public what they are doing out at the track.
Their main fundraising at present will be going towards fencing the perimeter of the track which will then allow them to make additional improvements for the riders and members of the public who come out to watch the event. This was recently given a boost with a $1000 donation from the East Arnhem Blues Club as part of their annual toy run. The next event will be the junior and senior lap practice on Saturday, March 17.
Players from both teams fight hard for the ball. More photos page 15 >>

Year 7 Contarf boys triumphant at tournament By HAMISH SIMPSON YIRRKALA Clontarf jumped at the chance to get into the big smoke for the season-opening ten-a-side carnival at Sanderson Middle School, in Darwin. The year seven boys are, as a group, our best attendees at both training and school so we were chomping at the bit to fly over and mix it up with the Darwin mob. The benchmark to get on the trip was 80 per cent attendance and Yirrkala had six boys attain this level. It was great news to hear that we were again combining with Tiwi College Clontarf to form the Dockers. Yirrkala had combined previously with Tiwi to have a win at the Territory Cup last year at senior level so the vibe was good.
The squad camped at Sanderson the night before the match and were charging after a healthy breakfast in their academy room. After getting run down by a late and strong-finishing Dripstone outfit in their first game, the Dockers were subsequently undefeated and were the proud winners of the Rex Barra Memorial Trophy. It was a great rapid fire carnival and the boys had a blast. The vociferous crew then sang footy songs in the minibus all the way to the wave pool. The old classic - “Every where we go, people want to know” was on high repeat. The wave pool drifted into a Casuarina shopping spree and then finishing with fish and chips at the wharf. Thanks to Willsie and the Sanderson MS for all their efforts. It was a great carnival, we’ll see you next year.
