Week-long trial finds man guilty er half tt be r ou y il po S of murder on Valentine’s Day…

THE trial of Wayne William RobertsBarlow found that he was guilty of the murder of a mother of two in Nhulunbuy early last year. The trial started at the Northern Territory Supreme Court on Monday March 19 and on Friday the jury took five hours and unanimously found him guilty of murder. The 22-year-old had pleaded not guilty to slashing the throat of the 38year-old woman on an unnamed track in Nhulunbuy on January 6 last year. The Court heard Roberts-Barlow was socialising at the Arnhem Club earlier on January 5 with friends. Roberts-Barlow’s lawyer, Rex Wild, QC, asked each of the witnesses if his client had been in a good mood that

night and they all said he was fun to be with. Mr Wild asked the witnesses if Roberts-Barlow was a ‘racist man’ or had ever said anything of a ‘racist nature’ and each witness said he wasn’t racist. Detective Sergeant David Richardson told the Court that two knives and the victim’s thongs were found after the murder in Roberts-Barlow’s rubbish bin. In a conversation he had with him shortly after his arrest for murder RobertsBarlow told him, “We were at the back gate. I remember the slap and that’s it.” Roberts-Barlow admitted to being in the shower in boxer shorts and washing blood off his hands and leg. Six days after the murder RobertsBarlow told Sgt Richardson, “I just want

to say I’m so sorry for the family. “I can’t imagine if I lost my mother ... now I’ve done it to someone else.” His 40-minute record of interview with police was played to the jury. Roberts-Barlow was crying when he explained how he threatened the mother of two to go away before blacking out and coming to in the shower washing blood off himself and a knife. He said he remembered having the ‘flip-blade’ knife in the bathroom which he may have used to kill the woman . “I don’t remember killing her,” he told Sgt Richardson. “The blood was all over me. I remember washing (blood) off the blade. I don’t remember picking the knife up.” Continues page 2 >>

His stepfather Gavin Dwyer told the jury he went to visit his stepson in the ‘jailhouse’. “I asked him if he done it and he said yes,” he said. By MARJO HALLOWELL AN unscheduled blackout did not stop the presentation of the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year awards night last Thursday. Like any professional presentation they held to ‘the show must go on’ .The event honoured local businesses who have to face the additional challenges of working in Gove such as the evening’s blackout on a daily basis. BanuBanu Wilderness Retreat on Bremer Island was announced the outright winner and Helen Martin said she and husband Trevor Hosie had to revamp the business last year when they changed their focus on local use rather than rely on the flagging national and international market. BanuBanu was originally more of a fishing camp or men’s retreat, however, four years ago the focus was changed when Helen took a more-active role in the business. Since

Last August Helen and Trevor moved to Bremer and decided ‘to get our act together’ and focus on the local market. “We need the local support to carry on,” she said. She acknowledged the support of the Traditional Owners and their belief in what BanuBanu was doing. Aminjarrinja Enterprises Aboriginal Corporation received the Indigenous Award which was accepted by Nesman Bara. Mr Bara said they were a sought after contractor on Groote Eylandt with a $10 million turnover. “We deliver our own training,” he said. He said they would also be working on a large development in Darwin. The Corporation employs 52 people and they have plans in place for when mining ceases on Groote ensuring a sustainable future.

The Gove Aquatic Centre took out the Healthy Living Award. The pool has been in Nhulunbuy for 40 years and Rachel Verdel won the contract to operate it and has been doing so since August. In that time she has introduced many new programs and has seen a significant rise in membershps. “This has been an amazing eight months with many challenges and wins,” she said. There are 260 children involved in swimming programs and many more in the other fitness groups run at the pool. She named all those who were part of her team individually and she thanked the ‘NCL depot boys’ who had the grounds looking manicured and Tracey and Ace also from NCL. Mrs Verdel also made special mention to the support she received from her husband, Ed (the Domestic Godess) and children Sam and Kikki who put up with her long hours at the pool.

Chief Justice Trevor Riley said: “The circumstances of the offence are clear. “But the motivation and what led to the offence is obscure to the extreme at the moment.” Mr Wild told Justice Riley he would be ‘troubled’ by what happened in this case and asked for a psychological and psychiatric report to be prepared before sentencing in May. Roberts-Barlow’s mother Cheryl Dwyer, who had supported him in court through the five day trial, broke down in tears when she learned her son’s fate. Life imprisonment is the maximum penalty for murder.

the victim’s windpipe was ‘completely severed’ after her throat was slashed with a knife. “The person who did this intended to kill,” he said. The jury had been asked to find Roberts-Barlow guilty of manslaughter, not murder. Mr Wild said there was no doubt his client killed the woman but he should face the lesser charge of manslaughter and said his client was heavily intoxicated when he slashed the woman’s throat. Mr Wild said Roberts-Barlow would have known he was behaving recklessly but not enough to form the intent to kill. This was rejected by the jury’s verdict

“I truly love every minute of my job. It’s a tough job but a lot of fun. GAC staff - you rock,” said Mrs Verdel. The Gourmet Cafe at Nhulunbuy High School took out the Education and Training category. The award was collected by Kaz Hill who said that Marlene Organ, who managed the VET program, was to be commended for her efforts showing the students how to run their own businesses in the future. The East Arnhem Indigenous Education Award went to Angurugu School and was accepted on their behalf by Hylton Hayes. The school principal, Christie Lloyd, was said to work actively in the community assisting children and their parents. The Arnhem Early Learning Centre received a highly commended award for the business which was built up from scratch in 2008. The centre now employs 27 staff and is

a 75 place centre and the award was accepted by Lisa Gravestein and Sharon Young. Presentations on the night were made by Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker and Darryl Stewart from Gove Amcal Pharmacy who were the sponsors of the event. Mr Stewart said his was not just a retail business as they supplied seven health centres and distributed 70,000 units of medication a day. The pharmacy is celebrating 40 years of service to the Gove community on July 13. Manager of Gove Operations, Pacific Aluminium, Frank Willsdon, Department of Business and Employment representative Graeme Kevern, NT Chamber of Commerce operations manager Julie Beaumont, and David Suter also made presentations. The evening was the last event to be hosted by outgoing East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce executive officer, Treacy Harry.

“Forty per cent of our community are youths aged between 12 – 25 years. They face huge peer group pressure that ends in substance abuse and suicide, but I just see so much potential. They need young role models, mentors and leaders.

- Russell Burns

Russell also has a chair at the Youth Minister’s Round Table, and will facilitate the Future’s Forum youth group on Friday 30th March.

Twenty-year-old Russell Burns says he is lucky have Yirrkala’s picturesque beaches at his front door, but the community might well argue that having this remarkable young man as a driving force for its youth puts most of the luck in its court. Russell has lived at Yirrkala for six years and enjoys his diverse responsibilities as Administration Manager at East Arnhem Shire Council in Yirrkala. But it is his volunteer work with the community’s newly formed youth committee group, Midawarr Mala, that delivers his biggest challenges and greatest rewards. “The word Midawarr means the harvest season and Mala means leader, so we chose the name to communicate that our

committee is about harvesting new leaders, Russell explained “Midawarr Mala meets monthly, and there are 10 committee members that were recommended by elders. We provide advice to the community, to the Shire and to Government about youth issues. But we don’t just bring problems to the table, we come with solutions and ways we can help implement the solutions. Russell, who shows maturity and commitment greater than his age, talks of his passion to support young people facing enormous challenges with substance abuse and poor school attendance.

“I’m very excited about what we will come out of the forum, he said.

“We want to work shop young people’s hopes and aspirations and identify some of the challenges they might face; and then we can feed those up to the Minister. “Young people should not be afraid to come along; it will be fun, interactive and the results will be positive.

“We will be joined by some young people who have achieved great things in life and they will share some of the highs and lows of their career, and talk about their journey.

Shandi is a valued member of the community’s youth committee, Midawarr Mala and the National Youth Congress. Recently she travelled to Melbourne as a representative at the Indigenous Women’s Leadership Forum.

Call for a suicide register THE chairwoman of a Territory parliamentary inquiry into the high rate of youth suicide in the Northern Territory said the Coroner’s office needs to be better resourced. Inquiry chairwoman Marion Scrymgour said there are a number of important needs that have to be addressed. “There’s the need to have or establish a suicide register, so that we get a better handle on the statistics and what’s happening, and to look at the trends,” she said. “There are a number of things I think that

need to be looked at, with grief counsellors and other resources that will be of great benefit in resourcing the Coroner’s office.” The grief counsellor proposal had previously been rejected by the Government because counselling is offered by other agencies. Ms Scrymgour said grieving families need more support. “There is a huge gap there and there is a huge need that needs to be filled,” she said.

East Journey will be launching their album in Yirrkala on Friday. By MARJO HALLOWELL WITH the launch of their debut album just over a week away East Journey gave a special performance for the students at Nhulunbuy High as part of their Harmony Day celebrations and encouraged them to come out to the launch. Guwak is to be launched in Yirrkala on Friday, March 30, from 5pm to 9pm and Mandawuy Yunupingu will be a special guest. Students from a year seven class, under the direction of Cassie Duykers, created two banners for the band which were displayed on either side of the stage for the perfrormance. Band lead singer Rrawun May-

muru said the students had done and excellent job. “We will be using those on Friday at the launch,” he said. During the performance he said, “We always sing for Arnhem Land and unity in this land. Where you go - that is your journey.” Other band members include Ses Fury Frank, Marcus Marawili, Wulkwwulku Marawili, PJ White, Ngalkanbuy Mununggurr, Banul Garawirrtja, Arian Pearson and Gathapura Mununggurr. East Journey has a deep spiritual relationship with their land and sea country. These relationships, in part, are maintained through song, dance and ceremony. Public aspects of this relationship are found in the band’s

recordings and live performances. Their inspiration and material is drawn from ceremonial song poetry, traditional melodies and instruments and, through guidance and encouragement from their old people, it is fused with western musical traditions to create what they call ‘saltwater reggae’. They recently established the East Journey Aboriginal Corporation to encourage youth to continue their education and to get behind their respective communities. They believe that sharing their stories through music is a way of engaging not only local Yolngu youth, but also wider mainstream Australia and potentially the international community.

Council election results to be finalised by Monday RESULTS of the Northern Territory Council elections held on Saturday, March 24, will be declared on April 2. The Electoral Commissioner, Mr Bill Shepheard said, “Polling proceeded smoothly and figures of the primary votes counted at polling places and counting centres at the close of polling have been posted onto the NTEC’s website (www.ntec.nt.gov.au). “Initial count figures represent primary vote counts only and in many cases may not be particularly indicative of the eventual outcome, especially where multiple vacancies are to be filled”. All votes counted on polling night will be rechecked this week. Further counts of postal and absent votes will take

place during the week, expected from Wednesday March 28. Absent votes are those cast by electors attending polling places outside their electorate on polling day. The deadline for receipt of postal votes for this election is 6pm Friday, March 30. Full results for all vacancies will not be known until after the deadline for return of postal votes. “The number of formal ballot papers is then finalised, the quota calculated for each separate election and the distribution of preferences can then take place,” Mr Shepheard said. Figures will be updated and progressively posted onto the NTEC website. Final results of the election are tentatively scheduled to be declared on Monday, April 2. Explanatory information on the proportional representation system is available on the NTEC website.

Man with knife attacks paramedic By MARJO HALLOWELL A ST JOHN Ambulance officer had to fend off an attack by a man with a knife at Nhulunbuy last Tuesday night, March 20. Ambulance officers were attending to a patient at the entrance to the Endeavour Square car park when a man approached the paramedic with a knife. Officer-in-charge of Nhulunbuy St John Ambulance Mandy Paradise said she was in the vehicle attending to the patient when another man armed with a knife approached her colleague. “He (the paramedic) had good reason to believe the man was going to use the

knife either on himself or the patient. “He knocked the knife out of the man’s hand and kicked it under the ambulance. My colleague then jumped into the vehicle and we locked ourselves in and called the police.” She said police were on the scene in a matter of minutes and the offender sat down waiting for them. “He appeared to be intoxicated,” she said. She said the injury sustained by the patient was completely unrelated to the attack and that her colleague was not injured. Police arrested a 40-year-old man and he is due to appear in court next month.

On the beat with NT Police Road closure nets first driver Arnhem Highway A 24-year-old man has been summonsed to appear in court for failing to obey the direction of a ‘Road Closed’ sign. Police stopped the vehicle 2km past the warning sign on the Arnhem Highway, about 1.30pm on Tuesday, March 20. “The Arnhem Highway near the Windows on the Wetlands has been the subject of flooding for days,” said acting Sergeant Michael Whiting. “There has been a multitude of warnings from Police and the Department of Construction and Infrastructure for motorists not to ignore the road closure signs, he said. “The signs are there to prevent tragedy and people need to abide by them.” “The last thing we need is for drivers to become stuck and put their life and the lives of rescuers at risk.” The man has been summonsed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on the April 19. The maximum penalty for driving on a closed road is a $13,000 fine. For updates on roads information, please visit www.roadreport.nt.gov.au (click on road closures or latest updates)

Senior Sergeant Roger Ilett said the incident occurred at around 9.40pm. “It was reported that two St John Ambulance staff drove to Franklyn Street to assist a man with a sore foot,” he said. “It is alleged that the second man became angry and produced a 20cm knife. The male paramedic was threatened with the weapon before retreating into the vehicle. “Police attended the location and arrested the alleged offender. He has been charged with aggravated assault and a number of other offences and bailed to appear in the Nhulunbuy Court on April 3.”

Man fined for no seatbelt A MAN, 28, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified in another state and to not wearing a seatbelt when he appeared at Nhulunbuy Magistrate’s Court. He was fined $400 on each charge and ordered to pay two $40 levies. On December 1 at 5.10pm he was driving on Melville Bay Road heading towards the airport when he was seen not wearing his seatbelt. When stopped by police he said he was about to put it on. His NT licence had expired and he was disqualified from driving in NSW. His lawyer, Michael Burrows, said he works here for his uncle and had done so for three years. He had been fully compliant and had been taking taxis but on this occasion he was taking some green waste out to the tip. Some had fallen out and he had pulled up to fix the problem and had just re-entered the car when he was stopped by police. “He recognises it was a stupid thing to do (drive to the tip) but he was trying to do the right thing,” Mr Burrows said.

Child neglect charges at Galiwinku Detectives from the Child Abuse Taskforce have arrested a 37-year-old Galiwinku woman for the severe neglect of a nine-year-old boy who had been in her care. The arrest was a result of Operation Manhattan a joint investigation undertaken by Northern Territory Police and the Department of Children and Families. Detective Sergeant Richard Magree of the Child Abuse Taskforce said, “The 37-year-old woman was conveyed to the Darwin Watch House and charged with negligently causing serious harm and failing to provide necessaries of life.” She was bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on Thursday of May 10. Det. Magree said the case was particularly serious. “This case serves as an important reminder to the community that reporting child abuse in the Northern Territory is mandatory. Boy stung by jellyfish swimming at Cape Arnhem

Photo of Max taken on the beach.

A NINE-year-old boy had a lucky escape on Saturday, March 17, after he was stung by a box jellyfish after he went for a dip in the ocean to cool off. Max Verdel was camping at Cape Arnhem with three families who had women competing in the 2012 Airnorth Ladies’ Fishing Competition. They were at Policemans Beach and didn’t let the kids in the water. Before they packed up to go to the next campsite in search of a better fishing spot one of the fathers, Ed Verdel, took the kids for a swim and all except Max put their stinger suits on. Max jumped into the water to cool off and managed to land on top of a jellyfish which covered his arms and legs in tentacles. As he came up the beach people in the group were already preparing the vinegar and buckets to capture it to re-use. His mother, Rachel Verdel, said they im-

mediately covered the stings in vinegar. “This was the most-important moment,” she said. “Max was about to lose it so we had to firmly calm him so we could treat and remove the tentacles. He surrendered to us and we could treat him well. “Max was amazingly brave and he said to me ‘Mum, am I going to die?’ “In the bucket we had zip bags of ice cooling the vinegar. The tentacles were transparent once vinegar was applied the turned purple then we removed them. “We continued to flush with icy cold vinegar for 15 minutes while others packed up camp.” After the initial flush with vinegar they sprayed him with a chemical spray. “We made the back seat ready in case we had to resuscitate him on the two and a half hour drive back into hospital,” she said. “Within two hours of his being stung the welts

that had covered his body had disappeared. “Hospital staff were surprised at how much they had cleared up when we got him to there.” “The chemical spray was not something they (at the hospital) had previously heard of as a cure so we want to make sure it actually helped the infection before we let everyone know what it was. The information has been forwarded to Darwin to be tested to see if it helped the vinegar or neutralised the vinegar and reacted with the stings. “It did show it is important to be prepared for all emergencies as the vinegar is a standard in our first aid kit,” said Mrs Verdel. Mrs Verdel said she was trying to find a hot spot to phone 000 and after she returned home she was advised if she dialled 112 it could have given her a boost for mobile reception. She will be marking that number in the top of her first aid kit should it ever be needed in the future.

Landing strips get boost to improve safety TWO isolated communities in Arnhem Land are to receive funding as part of a $5.4 million Regional Aviation Access Program. Raminingining and Milingimbi will both receive $45,000 each for work on their airstrips from this federally funded program. In Raminiging this will cover half the cost of installing apron lighting. Milingimbi will use the money towards installing Pilot Activated Lighting (PAL) and Automatic Weather Information Broadcast (AWIB) systems as well as upgrading the perimeter fence. The total cost of this project is $90,000. Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese and Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Catherine King last week announced the $5.4 million in funding to ensure safe and reliable air access at 31 of Australia’s most remote and isolated airstrips. The first projects start in April. “With works such as the installation of pilot activated solar airstrip lighting, runway repairs and improved fencing and drainage, these upgrades will assist communities in meeting the aviation safety obligations required to ensure the continuation of air services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Australia Post, freight and other air transport services,” Mr Albanese said. “Connecting these communities to essential food, health and education services through access to safe, operational aerodromes is a high priority; this work plays a vital role in ensuring that these communities are not left on their own,” Ms King said. “I am pleased with the response to the public call for applications, with projects ranging from large, strategic investments at Walgett in New South Wales to smaller upgrades such as a lighting system at Ramingining in the Northern Territory.” Since coming to office, the Labor Government has delivered a significant investment in remote aviation safety and access, with $29.5 million in funding approved for 181 projects nationally for remote aerodrome upgrades. For the six years to 2014 the Gillard Labor Government is investing $144 million for regional aviation programs, including $61 million in total for subsidised remote community flights under the Regional Aviation Access Program, compared to the coalition’s allocation of just $16 million for this purpose over the previous six years.

GhostNets project in bid for award GHOSTNETS has become a finalist in the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Earth Hours Creative Arts Award and is also a finalist in the People’s Choice Award. The Gumurr Marthakal Rangers are based at Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island) and manage a large area at the north-east tip of Arnhem Land. They were a founding member of GhostNets Australia and have been continuously involved in the program from the beginning. The community are concerned about the levels of rubbish and nets washing ashore on their coastline and are managing this through their involvement with GhostNets Australia as well as through other independent initiatives they undertake throughout the year. In 2002 the World Wide Fund for Nature worked with the Rangers and conducted two extensive marine debris surveys at Galiwin’ku on Banthula and Gitan beaches. In 2003 Banthula Beach was re-surveyed. The results showed plastics, including nets, made up 83.6 per cent of the total rubbish collected during the survey. It is believed that very little

of this debris originates from the local community. The long chain of islands extending north east from Elcho Island, the Wessel Islands, are thought to act like a marine sieve and collect much of the debris that washes from the Gulf of Carpentaria. In May 2010 and May 2011 the Rangers spent three weeks removing and recording marine debris and nets from Rrimbitja and Marchinbar Islands, the most northern point of both the Wessel Island Chain and the Northern Territory. The rangers recorded 631 ghost nets (estimated to be 48.5 tonnes) in May 2010 and 465 ghost nets (estimated to be 66 tonnes) in May 2011. They also found dozens of dead sea turtles entangled in the nets. The huge number of nets found on Rrimbitja and Marchinbar Islands sadly highlights the magnitude of the problem and the impacts that they will be having on wildlife and the marine ecosystem. Northern Australia supports an array of marine and coastal species, including six of the worlds

seven marine turtle species and four sawfish species, many of whose populations have declined elsewhere. Ghost nets are part of vast rafts of marine debris arriving from south east Asia that are fouling this otherwise pristine coastline which is mostly owned and occupied by Indigenous peoples of Australia. Formerly known as the Carpentaria Ghost Nets Program, GhostNets Australia is an alliance of over 22 indigenous communities from coastal northern Australia across the three states of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. The program was established in 2004 with funding from the Australian Government. Since its inception, the program has supported Indigenous Rangers to remove over 7500 ghost nets of varying sizes. This has resulted in the recovery of a proportion of the trapped wildlife, particularly marine turtles (52 per cent), and the prevention of the ghost nets from returning to the sea to continue their destructive life-cycle. Less than 10 per cent of these nets have been attributed

to Australian fisheries. This project is also enabling Aboriginal communities to fulfil their aspirations of having stewardship of their customary lands and adjacent marine environment, known as ‘caring for country’. GNA is training this extensive network of indigenous rangers in data collection, assisting in the establishment of institutional frameworks, and opening channels of communication between communities on a scale that has never before been experienced in Australia with a single project. This multi award winning program is managed by the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group (NGRMG) with funding from the Australian Government until 2013. The Australian Government funding is matched by stakeholder’s cash and in-kind contributions, sponsorships and donations. Residents barking mad about irresponsible dog owners A YOUNG girl was bitten by a dog late last week and the owners had the dog put down. The dog was in its yard when the young girl entered and was bitten. Compliance officer with the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited Rick Stephen said the incident was still under investigation and police were called. “The Corporation is looking at further legal action against the owner who became abusive towards the animal control officer who went to investigate the reported incident,” Mr Stephen said. Dogs are on the tongues of many around town following the attack of a man by three dogs on a beach several weeks ago and residents are speaking out against irresponsible owners who do not keep their dogs on leads around town. Mr Stephen said there are a number of off leash areas and these are the bike/pedestrian track behind Beagle and Jasper streets as far down as the drain just before the primary school, the bike/pedestrian track along Beagle Street from 100 metres before the BMX track up to Arnhem Road, alongside Cemetery Road and the East Woody Road (from Beagle Road

to Middle Beach), the oval off Boxal Road and the dirt section off Enau Road. He said even if dogs are off the leash in these areas they need to be near their owners and responsive to voice commands. They must also be on leads if they are on the roads in these areas. “Owners must pick up dog droppings as they will be fined under the Litter Act if they fail to do so and this does apply to off leash areas. “Dogs found off the leash in areas other than those designated as off leash will also be fined. “Any dogs on a leash must be under the control of someone no younger than 12-yearsold. And apart for the off leash areas dogs must be on a leash whenever they are not in their own yards,” he said. The contracted dog catcher, David Suter, has been trapping and euthanising wild dogs around the town including the area around the Nhulunbuy Corporation depot, the pound, the childcare centre and the hospital. Traps are set to catch the wild dogs with bait (not poison) and they are then put

down. They are assessed once trapped and to date they have not caught any domestic or registered dogs. Mr Suter said in the last six months they have caught 15 hybrid or wild dogs which have been put down.. Mr Stephen said, “We haven’t caught any registered dogs to date and the owners would always be contacted and the dogs impounded. “It is the wild dogs we are trying to discourage from roaming around the town. The process has been ongoing for some time. “Residents need to make sure they always register their dogs and ensure they have a collar and tag on at all times and that they are kept under control at all times. “The three dogs that attacked the man on the beach recently have all been deemed dangerous dogs. This means if there are any further breaches of behaviour we will consider de-registering them and removing them from the town and industrial lease areas.” Mr Stephen said the Corporation was reviewing the current by-laws regarding dogs and there would be a public consultation as part of the process.

 letters to the editor ‘Clarifying the misinformed’ - Theedom I FELT it necessary to reply to the misinformed correspondence sent in by Mr David Mitchell. To do this I will respond to each of the three major issues that are raised in his letter. Firstly let me start by advising all residents that the Township Management Agreement that the Nhulunbuy Corporation Ltd operates under is quite clear. The Corporation is only permitted to work in the town, industrial area and airport leases. It is not permitted to undertake work outside these lease areas. It means that the organisation is constrained in what it can undertake, particularly where it lies outside the area that it is required to manage. When something occurs outside the three areas identified above, the Corporation must defer to the controlling body. This may be the Shire of East Arnhem, Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation and/or the Northern Land Council. If required, the Corporation will seek formal approval to undertake work, like is happening with the vector control (mosquito control). The Corporation makes no apology for this as it respects these organisations and their jurisdictions. Now, let me respond to each of the issues raised: Pedestrian Crossings The Corporation operates under the Australian Road Rules.

These are quite clear with respect to pedestrian crossings. Nhulunbuy being so small does not warrant, under the road rules, any pedestrian crossing in town. It does not meet the guidelines and objective measures that determine whether one should be put in. In the case of the existing crossings, the Corporation has chosen to allow these to remain. However, it remains concerned at the situation in Chesterfield and has been discussing this with the relevant NT Government authorities. In this respect, the Town Board, Corporation and NT Government are working towards having a road safety expert come to Nhulunbuy to discuss this and a range of other issues that are causing angst. This process has taken longer than expected. However, it is being progressed at present. I might add that the request for submissions on the Chesterfield road crossing problems in the 26 October 1 November, 2011, Arafura Times drew no response. Crocodile Trapping Crocodile control rightly rests with the NT Government and Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation. The Corporation has absolutely no involvement in this area other than to provide information to the public in relation to actions being taken. This happened when the NT Government’s Conservation

and Wildlife chose to end trapping in April -May, 2011. The reasons for that decision were: * Closure of the Crocodile farm so there was nowhere to take them. * The withdrawal of approval by the Traditional Owners to euthanise crocodiles. * The removal of approval by the NT Government to relocate dangerous crocodiles. * This was due to a death in Queensland that occurred after a crocodile was relocated. If there is a problem crocodile in the surrounding areas, Dhimurru and Conservation and Wildlife should be contacted and they will discuss the matter with the Traditional Owners. Action from there will depend on what the Traditional Owners approve. This is the appropriate solution and one that the Corporation fully supports. Feral Animals Firstly, the Corporation does not undertake any control of cats. There are no regulations in Nhulunbuy at present to allow this, and the Corporation sees no advantage in changing this. (Much of local government in Australia operates the same way.) We do, however, advocate responsible animal ownership, whether dogs, cats, fish or even snakes. The Corporation also works closely with the RSPCA to deal with cats and dogs that

require re- housing. In relation to feral animals, where they encroach on the leases, the Corporation will act. We have done this in a number of instances over the past few months and have advised residents where there are concerns for their and their animals safety due to wild dogs and dingoes. Off the leases, we have no jurisdiction and therefore are legally unable to act. In relation to the specific incident that Mr Mitchell mentions, why would the Corporation go to another ‘town’ to discuss an issue that it has no jurisdiction over. It was and remains a police issue (as is the case with all dog attacks) as it happened upon Aboriginal land, outside the control of the Corporation. The Corporation does not have the power to intervene in these issues and nor should it. No authority that the Corporation knows of moves outside its jurisdiction as the legal ramifications are too serious to contemplate. Finally, contrary to what was said, money is not a factor in any of the matters raised. We remain committed to developing a family friendly community, but one that operates within the law and respects that others also have responsibilities that we cannot or should not interfere with. Yours sincerely Dr Ross Theedom Town Administrator

Viability of Pacific Aluminium in everyone’s interest THE East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce Awards last Thursday was a great event to bring together and showcase local businesses and service providers from around the region and celebrate outstanding achievement. The presence in the room of representatives from industry, business, government, training and education served to by NT Member for Nhulunbuy highlight that the engagement and partnerships across these LYNNE WALKER sectors is crtitical in forging and strengthening pathways from school to work and building the economy not only in Nhulunbuy but surrounding communities. The power outage, just fifteen minutes into the event, was a pointed reminder of just one of the challenges local businesses face running a business in Nhulunbuy. That said, the event ran

Electoral News

smoothly in spite of this thanks to the very efficient Treacy Harry from the Chamber and staff at the Golf Club as well as the good humour of 90 very tolerant guests. PACIFIC Aluminium’s senior executives were in Nhulunbuy last week to speak with employees about the future of the Gove operations. I was grateful for the opportunity to meet with them also and was assured that any reduction in workforce numbers would be through natural attrition. No small or medium enterprise can sustain financial losses for any extended period of time and the same goes for the major employer on the Gove Peninsula. We all have a vested interest in seeing Pacific Aluminium become a viable business and the NT Government is committed to supporting this. I WILL be in Darwin this week for palriamentary sittings but return Friday morning in time for the Futures Forum at Yirrkala from 1pm. This important event will highlight the employment and economic development opportunities available at Yirrkala. Following the forum will be a performance from East Journey band who will be launching their debut album. If their performance at Nhulunbuy High School’s Harmony Day celebration last week is anything to go by, they are heading for great things.

School needs community support to continue great results more credits than needed to gain their NTCET. These results show that NHS is no longer an alternative to other schools - it is an exemplary educational source in its own right and is reaping the rewards from programs such as Quick Smart with great results. To continue these great results for this year and future years NHS needs your support.

ENDS A

Many of the resources and programs used to gain these results come from voluntary parent contributions. Suggested contribution rates are given to families at the start of the year and relate to the resources required by students in each year level. Without these funds the school will not be able to offer certain programs, excursions, or resources such as photocopies and art resources.

The voluntary contributions allow the remote students of the Gove Peninsula to receive a well rounded education such as students in the city receive. If you would like to join the School Council phone Nhulunbuy High School on 8987 0844. Meetings are at the school on week four and week eight of each term and dates for next term are May 9 and June 6.

Stars  

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A favourable aspect to Neptune later in the week will help your powers of intuition. You need to make an important choice, and must think through all your options carefully. Your gut instinct will be the best guide. Romance. An intimate discussion with your partner will bring up some secrets. Be prepared for some tough decisions this week.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) At times, your father may seem to be interfering in your affairs. He is only trying to help, but you might still prefer it if he would turn his attentions elsewhere. Romance. The next few days should be an especially good time for romance. Don’t appear to be too eager, however.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

FOR KIDS

You should deal with a problem head-on rather than trying to retreat from it. A colleague who thinks they know the answer will be of little real help: you will have to deal with this issue by yourself. Romance. You will need to focus very clearly on your emotional needs over the next few days. Don’t let practical concerns take up too much of your time.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A meeting with your boss later in the week will help to restore your faith in this person’s sense of fairness. Despite recent misunderstandings between you there is a good chance of a promotion in the not too distant future. Romance. You will need to be ruthlessly honest with your partner. Don’t gloss over an incident which you know has affected them deeply.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

A difficult aspect to Uranus at the beginning of the week may bring an unusual person into your life. Listen to what this new acquaintance has to say, as their advice is backed up by a lot of wisdom. Romance. At times your partner may find you a little too much to handle. Do your best to calm down a little.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 91 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

A powerful aspect to Mars around the middle of the week will help you to push through with a new project. You may be a little too aggressive at times, however, and must accept that other people want to do things at a slower pace. Romance. Don’t change a decision once you have made it. Your partner needs to have some clarity and direction from you at the moment.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

A difficult aspect to Jupiter could lead to a spate of bad luck. Make sure that you avoid taking too many risks. Be especially careful about accepting an offer which seems too good to be true. Romance. You will be surprised when someone that you were introduced to several weeks ago wants to get in touch with you. This person obviously hasn’t forgotten you!

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

A friend who has given you some confidential information won’t want you to spread it around. You may not realise quite how important this secret is to them. Romance. A disagreement with your partner won’t be as serious as it seems at the time. A favourable aspect to Mercury later in the week will help you both to communicate a little better.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Chores will appear out of nowhere this week! Unfortunately there is a lot more to be done than meets the eye. Romance. A sudden change in your relationship may be worrying at first. You will soon see how much it makes sense, however.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Time spent relaxing with friends will help you to forget about a recent upset. You have had a lot on your plate recently and need to put your mind onto other things. Romance. A sudden change in your love-life will come at just the right time. Make the most of the next week!

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness.

– Leo Tolstoy

SOLUTIONS No. 91

You may be feeling a little restless because other people are not quite as “hyped” up as you. It is up to you to motivate everybody else! Romance. Be careful not to be unfaithful to your partner. You should think twice before you do anything which you might regret later.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) You know that you are taking the right course of action. A show of support from your friends will cheer you up and give you the confidence to continue. Romance. A colleague at work may be more interested in you than you first thought. You need to decide if you are going to get involved with this person: if not, you need to be clear about your feelings.

April 1 is no joke

CDU to offer a prerequisite course for oil and gas workers CHARLES Darwin University has further strengthened its ability to support the Territory’s burgeoning oil and gas industry following a watershed agreement signed late last week. CDU’s vice-chancellor Professor Barney Glover signed a memorandum of understanding with the Challenger Institute of Technology in Perth that will strengthen CDU’s ability to support the Territory’s emerging industry. Prof. Glover said the memorandum sat above a partnership agreement that paved the way for CDU to deliver a certificate course in process operations that is a vital prerequisite for many workers seeking employment in the oil and gas sector. The agreement will give CDU students and staff access to substantial resources the Australian Centre for Energy and Process Training (ACEPT) has built up as the premier Australian training provider to the oil and gas industry. Under the memorandum, CDU will deliver a certificate II in process operations at its Casuarina campus in Darwin. Students in the eight-week course will spend a week in Perth at ACEPT’s full-scale process plant gaining invaluable hands-on experience in a real-life industry environment. Prof. Glover said the memorandum also gave CDU a firm foundation on which to explore other important initiatives with Challenger Institute of Technology. “I will work with Challenger to assess how we may be able to support them develop pathways to higher education for their students. We have an outstanding Bachelor of Engineering program that could be beneficial for both institutions, students and industry clients,” he said. CDU anticipated being able to offer the certificate II in process operations course for the first time by mid-year.

Rewarding excellence in training Prevent this happening in your home by ensuring you replace your fire alarm batteries regularly. THE Nhulunbuy Fire Service is reminding residents to do their annual check up of their smoke detectors. The Fire Service has declared April 1 as the perfect reminder for this annual check. Local officer in charge of Nhulubuy Colin Snowden said house fire alarms can only save lives if they work. “Now is the time to ensure you change your battery and make sure your alarms are still working. “By checking the alarms once a year people can get into the habit as so often once they are installed people forget about them. Mr Snowden said that in November last year legislation changed so that any new alarms installed

Past members wanted WITH the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Nhulunbuy Rotary Club Charter just around the corner current Rotarians are looking for past members. Rotarian Steve Castelli is trying to locate as many of the club’s previous members as he can so they can be invited to a special cocktail party to commemorate the event. “I believe there have been in excess of 100 members over the years and many have moved out of town,” Mr Castelli said. Mr Castelli said the club was chartered on April 14, 1987 and they plan to host a cocktail party on April 21. The Variety bus will pick up guests and the party will be down at the beach. needed to be photo-electric and not the ionisation type of alarm. He said that landlords needed to make the change once new tenants came into their properties and the photo-electric alarms also needed to be installed for any homes being sold. New houses or flats needed to install the new alarms. “These have 10-year lithium batteries which should be checked annually. “Once an ionisation alarm breaks it too needs to be replaced with a a photo-electric one.” “The new alarms are available at the local hardware store.”

NOMINATIONS for Northern Territory Training Awards were opened by Minister for Business and Employment Delia Lawrie last week. “Training our current and future workforce is vital to our strong, growing economy, and Territorians are taking up traineeships and apprentices at the highest rate in Australia,” Ms Lawrie said. “The NT Training Awards recognise training excellence and achievements by Territory businesses, training organisations and trainers, apprentices, trainees and students.” Nominations are now open for

the 2012 awards in 11 individual and organisation award categories. Individual categories include Trainee of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Austin Asche Apprentice of the Year, School-Based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year, VET in Schools Student of the Year and VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year. Kevin Bloody Wilson coming to Gove KEVIN Bloody Wilson (pictured) will be in town this week appearing at the Walkabout Tavern on Thursday with his daughter, Jenny Talia. The Kevin Bloody Wilson show is not just a concert performance, it is a full on event, a chance to see an iconic Australian who is a unique international comedy legend. Kevin Bloody Wilson is an international artist who can shift seamlessly between an outback pub to the hallowed halls of the London Palladium. No stranger to Gove as his brother used to live up here this will be the only tour this year as he is heading to the UK to make a television series, ‘Rhythm N Roots’. He has just returned from making a show in Scotland where he performed with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the Proclaimers.

His record sales are now nudging the four million mark. Without traditional media support, all of Kevin Bloody Wilson’s albums and DVDs have achieved Gold Sales status globally, with many reaching Platinum, and one, ‘Kev’s Back’, awarded a quadruple Platinum. Kev’s recordings can be found in such diverse locations as Outback Australia to Antarctica. It seems ironic that 25 years ago, Kevin Bloody Wilson was being arrested for performing his songs in public, yet on Australia Day in January 2010, he was officially nominated for Australian Of The Year for doing exactly the same thing. The show is on at the Walkabout and for tickets contact the Tavern on 8939 2088.

NRL comes to NT in April TOP End rugby league fans will have the chance to watch the Territory’s first NRL Premiership points match in 17 years between Sydney City Roosters and North Queensland Cowboys in April. Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton said the match is on Saturday, April 14. “Territorians love their rugby league, and I am very pleased to say that tickets are now on sale for the Northern Territory’s first premiership points match in 17 years,” Mr Hampton said. The Territory government provided the match fee plus costs for the Sydney Roosters to have their ‘home’ game here in Darwin, and the Cowboys are coming as part of their three-year funding agreement with the Northern Territory Government. Mr Hampton said the match is another fantastic addition for the 2012 sporting calendar and demonstrates this Government’s commitment to bringing national major sporting events to the Territory. “Ensuring Territorians have access to a wide range of facilities and activities that enhance the great Territory lifestyle is a key target within this Government’s Territory 2030 strategic plan,” Mr Hampton said. “That’s why I am delighted the Territory Government has secured a round seven NRL premiership points match in Darwin between the Cowboys and Sydney Roosters.

“Our three year deal with the Cowboys includes several community engagement activities throughout the Territory. “I anticipate community activities before and after the match, which will include player visits to schools, community appearances and additional coaching clinics,” Mr Hampton said. The last NRL Premiership points match played in Darwin was Penrith v Balmain in 1995.

SPORT

New sport making waves in Nhulunbuy WITH a high level of involvement in keeping Gove residents healthy CrossFit Lat 12 started at the Gove Aquatic Centre on Monday. This new program is not just a fitness regime it is a new sport with competitions worldwide. Affiliated with the US based organisation CrossFit Lat12 will prepare participants for random physical challenges. It caters for those wanting to enhance their current fitness levels or those who want to get serious about getting fit from scratch. It is ever changing so participants work out safely, effectively and efficiently. Trainers Rachel Verdel and Sam Stevens will be developing fitness regimes for participants in the program offering their many years experience in the field. Rachel Verdel brings years of experience as a Aust Swim teacher, Triathlon Australia Try Kidz coach, Certificate IV personal trainer and Level 1 CrossFit trainer. “It just made sense to me as it (CrossFit) crosses over to all sports as a strength conditioning program that targets functional movement,” Mrs Verdel said. “I have never written the same program twice which is also why I love CrossFit as this then leaves no opportunity for plateau as routine is the enemy. I am also presently studying exercise rehabilitation. “We are offering a broad timetable to suit shift workers and stay at home mums.” She said they work on the 10 facets of fitness including strength, stamina, cardio, flexibility, co-ordination, accuracy, agility, balance, speed and power. Sam Stevens is a trainer who has a long history with fitness with her own personal win of losing 30kg. “Sam is dedicated to fitness and once you have met her you will see the love she has for fitness. She thrives on a challenge and if she can’t do something she doesn’t stop till she gets it,” Mrs Verdel said. Sam also joins the CrossFit Lat 12 team with a Certificate IV in personal training qualifications and CrossFit level 1 coaching and unique passion to get everyone in her class to perform their best. CrossFit Lat12 is offering your first session free so you can see if it’s for you before you commit to a journey that is totally addictive. Monthly memberships are available and there are special memberships being offered for those in the armed forces and emergency services. Full time students will have special rates and there will be a 10 card pass for those only in town for short periods. For more information visit www.crossfitlat12.com

Rachel Verdel is pumped to take on the newest thing in Gove - CrossFit.

The biggest and the best in Australia

Shantel Rogers, Loz Robinson and Alex Betz from Charlie’s Anglers. Shantel and Loz both took out high score prizes.

Tastes Like Chicken, winner of a NAFT award. By MARJO HALLOWELL WITH 158 entries the 2012 Airnorth Ladies Fishing Classic is the largest ladies’ fishing competition in Australia. Almost 50 teams proved they had what it took to fish regardless of the conditions as the weather on the weekend of March 17 and 18 was less than perfect. Chris Andrews from the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club (NRSFC) in his splendid bright pink suit got into the colourful atmosphere for the presentation night which was held at the town hall on Saturday night. It seems a large part of the fishing competition is to have fun not just on the water but also in the search of the perfect team name and dressing up - or down - for the presentation night. Those who did so were rewarded with prizes for their efforts. Mr Andrews made a point of reading out the names of all the sponsors at the beginning and the end of the evening and highlighted that the

event could not be the success it is without their generous ongoing support. Vice-president of the NRSFC Jason Burke welcomed all the anglers and guests. “Competitions don’t happen without people giving it a go,” he said. Tara Canobie was the champion senior angler and daughter Savanne took out the junior prize. They were also on the winning team - Funky Fishing Fever. The second placed team was Fishalicious and Slice Girls came in third. Shantel Rogers was the highest points scorer in the estuary section with Tara Canobie the highest point scorer for reef fishing and Janine Russell in the land based section. Junior highest point winners were Tegan Stiff for estuary, Savanne Canobie for reef and Denver Shine for land based. Highest scores for individual species went to Janine Russell, Loz Robinson, Deb Rossi, Tina Pelkonen, Gillian Ryan, Donna Lane, Djoindil Maymuru, Jo Gibon and Tara Canobie. Meritorious awards went to Raewyn Huddy,

Nicky Mayer, Donna Marie Grieves, Sandy Laverty, Jody Nunn, Savanne Canobie, Katrina Stubbs and Lisa Mare. Lisa Mare, who had flown in from Darwin, won the lucky door prize of a return flight from Gove to Darwin. All the efforts of decorating and dressing up was rewarded with Lady Luck and the Leprechauns taking out the prize for the best decorated table, Desperate Trout Wives for best dressed, and All Men Are Anchors for the best team name. There were a number of NAFT awards for those who did not catch any fish worth measuring and they included Tastes Like Chicken, Desperate and Dateless and The Barrafura Reel Chicks. A special nice try award was introduced for Hook Line and Sink Her who came up with some innovative photos as they had not managed to catch any fish. One example was a photo of Jack standing in the mangrove - a mangrove jack. The organising committee were commended on their fantastic effort in ensuring a successful

competition and going through all the photos of this catch, measure, photograph and release competition to determine the winners. Karyn Laverty, Ellie Burrow, Hannah Seanigger, Jacquie Knivett and Raewyn Huddy were the committee members. The competition raises funds each year and the Look good Feel Good organisation was presented with a cheque for $4000 which was accepted by the organisations NT Coordinator Marilyn Harvey. The winner of the photo prize was Sarah Munnings. Students from the high school hospitality classes helped clear the tables, members of the surf club and Variety club took care of the bar with the Gove Peninsula Bakery catering the evening. Once the presentations were finished all the additional prizes were awarded as lucky draws for all the women who entered the competition and then Gove FM provided the music for those who partied on.
