Kids keen to clean up Gove
$2 – EDITION 879, 7 - 13 March 2012
By MARJO HALLOWELL THE gloves were off, or rather on, in the battle against litter in Gove on the weekend. About 40 people went to the Clean Up Australia Day site at the Gove Boat Club (GBC) on Sunday and signed up to take part in the annual Australia wide event. A third of those taking part were children who were very keen to fill up their bags with rubbish. All were gloved up and ready to go. There was a trailer that was soon filled with cans from an unofficial dump just outside the boundary fence. Collectors cleaned up from the causeway back to the club and also along the beach. Some heavy equipment was on hand to help move the boats that had just been left on the foreshore and forgotten about by owners. Commodore of the GBC Brad Smith said they had advertised they would be dumping all unclaimed boats and any that were not registered to club members. He was pleased that many had been taken away during the week before the clean up. “We will be storing those we have pulled out of the sand and those that have apparently been dumped and forgotten in the boat park until the scrap metal people come to town,” he said. “Then any that remain unclaimed will be sold off as scrap metal. All in all we moved 15 boats from the beach. “There are remnants of an old pontoon and even a car dumped on the block which will need to be removed tomorrow (Monday). We found old car or boat batteries and thousands of aluminium cans and bottles. “We have had to do a count for Clean Up Australia Day and we collected more than 3000 aluminium cans and over 100 large bags of rubbish which filled two trucks and this included numerous bottles and other rubbish. The truckloads were taken to the tip. “A couple, Justine and Glen Porter, collected over 1000 cans between them and they contributed to the trailer load which will be taken to the Rotary recycling drop off. “It was a very successful day and we must not forget to thank YBE for supplying the heavy machinery to help move the larger items and members of the Rio health, safety and environment department who came out and helped. “I’m not sure about the kids but by the end of the collection I was worn out. “We were really pleased with the results and surprised by just how much rubbish we managed to move in just the three hours of collection.” For more photos from the day see page 15 >>

By MARJO HALLOWELL AFTER weeks of staying with friends the caretaker at the local surf club has moved into his new accommodation. Peter Richards, known affectionately as Old Pete, has been the caretaker at the club and lost all his possessions when fire razed the storage shed and flat which he had called home for the last five years. Wheels were set in motion to find a solution as to how to get Old Pete back on site as soon as possible and Tim Broadbent from the East Arnhem Trading Company came up with the solution of a container which was set up for accommodation. Mr Broadbent organised the accommodation and it was delivered on Thursday by Toll. Toll employees removed the steel girders and sited the container ready for Old Pete to move into on the weekend. They also delivered an additional container for the club to store any new items as they arrived. Plumbing and electricity were connected on Friday and Old Pete and his faithful companion, Blue Dog, were able to move in on the weekend. At the Gove Peninsula SLSC annual general meeting on February 26 it was highlighted that he needed to be located on site as a matter of urgency as the club suffered a further loss after a break into their cool room lightened the club of $2500 worth of stock.

A NEW private dental practice will start operation in Nhulunbuy later this month. Member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker has said the practice, run by Dr Anand Patel, will initially be open two days each week with the potential to increase depending on demand. “This is fantastic news for the community of Nhulunbuy and is a great example of what can be achieved when Government and the private sector work together delivering real and great health outcomes for Territorians,” Ms Walker said. Dr Patel is a graduate of the University of Adelaide Dental School and also has a Masters of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics with Distinction from Kings College, London University. He has over 15 years experience in Australia and overseas and has recently established a new practice in Darwin. The service will share facilities with the existing Department of Health Dental Clinic at Endeavour Square. “The NT Government recently invested $220,000 in a refurbishment of the Dental Clinic which was completed in December last year,’ Ms Walker said. “The establishment of the new service is a collaboration between the Department of Health, Rio Tinto Alcan and Dr Patel.” Members of the public wanting to make appointments to see Dr Patel can contact his Darwin practice on telephone 08 8948 1225. Nhulunbuy has been without a dental service since July last year with those not on benefits requiring dental treatment having to travel to Darwin, Cairns or even further afield.
A NUMBER of dog attacks on Tuesday or Wednesday of last week at Middle Beach have not been reported to authorities. Dog catcher David Suter said he had heard reports from a number of people but, as the attack was off the town lease, he could not act on the incident. Steve Roeger from Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation said the incident had not been reported to them. “We will liaise with police and the Corporation to assist in managing if required,” Mr Roeger said. Police said it was important that any dog attacks be reported to the Police or the Nhullunbuy Corporation so problem areas could be targeted and residents warned.

High school students help surf club
Chris Putland and Bernie Whelan with students from Nhlunbuy High School at the presentation. A RECENT fire at the local Gove Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club has sent the town into ‘community’ mode over the last few weeks and the students at the Nhulunbuy High School were hot on the fundraising trail. Last week they presented the surf club $1887.39 as a result of their efforts. There have been constant communication between school captains and surf club president Chris Putland and fundraising
began the day after fire occurred. Donation boxes were set around the school and at the local BP service station while the students had a bake stall. They organised a free dress day themed purple and yellow at the school and held a car wash at the Arnhem Club family fun day. Students presented Chris Putland and Bernie Whelan, chief trainer at the surf club, a $1672.30 cheque and $215 in cash on
Tuesday, February 22, during a school wide positive behaviour assembly. The surf club representatives were very grateful and gave the students an update on the progress of repair and rebuild and also told them about all the equipment that was lost and what new equipment is needed. High school PE teacher Ms Denise Marrable, organiser of the school’s surf carnival day which promotes safe beach behaviour
and teaching first aid basics to students, announced that the surf carnival is definitely on this year motivating many students to show their support in getting the surf club back up and running in time for a favourite school event. Students and teachers were also urged to keep playing the Navy ASRL game on facebook where surf clubs gain entries into a draw for a grant for a new surf clubhouse.
Man stung by Irunkandji A COMMERCIAL fisherman had to be rescued from a boat off Galuwinku after being stung by a deadly jellyfish. Police said the 41-year-old man was stung by an Irukandji jellyfish as he pulled in a mackerel net near Galiwinku west of Nhulunbuy last Monday morning, February 27. A police boat was used to take the man from the fishing vessel to shore where he was taken to the Galiwinku clinic for treatment. He was then taken to Gove District Hospital and was discharged on Wednesday. The tiny Irukandji jellyfish is believed to be the most venomous creature in the world. Opiate relief is often required for pain but a hospital spokes-
person could not confirm the individual patient’s treatment. Public health physician Dr Steven Skov said, “Irukandji syndrome is caused by several types of jellyfish which are present in the waters off northern Australia all year round and can be potentially fatal. “Stings from these jellyfish can cause painful muscle cramps, usually in the arms and legs, or severe chest, abdomen or back pain along with headache, nausea, sweating, and distress. “It can take five to 30 minutes after contact with the jellyfish for someone, affected by Irukandji syndrome, to show symptoms and medical attention should always be sought as severely high blood pressure or
heart failure could occur. “There have been a small number of deaths attributed to Irukandji syndrome but none in the Northern Territory that we are aware of. “Jellyfish that can cause Irukandji syndrome are very small - usually only one to two centimetres in diameter - and therefore very difficult to see. “The best way to avoid being stung by jellyfish is to stay out of sea water. Those who do enter the water are urged to ensure they are covered from head to toe. “As we recommend for box jellyfish stings, anyone stung by a jellyfish should apply vinegar liberally to the site of the sting and seek medical attention.”

Ralpa programme motivating Nhulunbuy students Helping THE new Ralpa training programme at Charles Darwin University’s Nhulunbuy campus is living up to its name. Lecturer John Crocker said Ralpa is a Yolngu word for ‘be motivated’ and that is exactly how the students have responded. “Attendance has been excellent and student feedback is encouraging. The greatest difficulty is getting them to pack up the workshop at the end of the training day and head off to their work sites for the afternoon,” he said. Fifteen employees of Marrngarr and Bunuwal organisations signed up for the eight-week pilot programme which focuses on workplace expectations and skills. “This first course has a construction theme that mixes classroom theory, teamwork, leadership and a high level of workshop activity,” he said. “Many have shown a high degree of skill and aptitude for working with wood. “The tuckerbox project has allowed students to show their ability at hand carving which is just fantastic.” Other students are building a cubby house for the local childcare centre or making shovels for the four-wheel drive kits. Once training is completed graduates will work within their community organisations on projects such as house and school construction including an upgrade to facilities at the Garma festival site. Ralpa, an extension of the already existing ALERT Program, is an initiative of Pacific Aluminium’s Gove Operations and Yolngu traditional owners with practical training provided by Charles Darwin University. The focus is to ensure Yolngu youth have a meaningful pathway to employment. Embedded into the community-driven programme, which was designed and financed by Pacific Aluminium’s Gove Operations, are regular meetings and discussions with Yolngu elders and mentors, health workers and the Pacific Aluminium Gove Operations team. Mr Crocker said: “We have been encouraged to hear that there have been enquiries from potential future students almost on a daily basis. “We are hoping that some of the students from this first group may come alongside future students as mentors. “We are still ironing out the minor details but it looks like we’ve got a winning formula with Ralpa.”

NEWS On the beat with NT Police Bust at Darwin airport stops kava going to communities Darwin Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk Investigators and Dog Operations Unit Officers seized 7.5kg of kava during screening of luggage and freight at the Darwin Airport last Wednesday (February 29). Drug Detection Dog Nugget had a positive hit on a parcel, allegedly destined for a northern remote community, and on inspection it was found to contain 400 separate bags of kava hidden inside cereal boxes. “These substances are taking a terrible toll on people living in remote communities, both physically and financially. Police will continue to disrupt supply and target the people who profit from them.” detective senior sergeant Clint Sims said. Police estimate the kava would have netted a minimum of $8000 if it had been sold in remote communities. Investigations into the origin and destination of the seized material are ongoing.

intercepted the vehicle. The kava was in two bags and was valued at $32,000. The man and woman were both charged and bailed to appear in Nhulunbuy Magistrates Court on March 7. Their vehicle has been impounded by the police. The previous Friday, February 24, Nhulunbuy Police seized two unclaimed bags at Gove Airport. Officers were on duty at the airport and the unclaimed bags were found to have contained over 30kg of kava.
A RECENT survey has discovered two thirds of people fear losing or being without their mobile phone, a condition being called nomophobia. The study reveals that 41 per cent of people interviewed, in an effort to stay connected, have two phones or more. When asked if they’d be upset if a partner looked at the messages and texts on their phone almost half said that they would. Digging a little deeper, more women worry about losing their phones than men - 70 per cent of the women surveyed compared to 61 per cent of the men, yet it is men that are more likely to have two phones - scoring 47 per cent and 36 per cent respectively, perhaps in an effort to stay connected.
In just over a week Nhulunbuy Police have stopped more than 60kg of kava entering the community. The police seized 32kg of kava on Friday, March 2. A 52-year-old Yirrkala man and a 42-year-old Sydney woman have been charged after the vehicle in which they were travelling was stopped in Nhulunbuy. They had been seen at Gove Airport by an off-duty policeman with heavy bags which aroused suspicion. He phoned on-duty officers who
The police’s enquiries are continuing. Officer in charge of Nhulunbuy Police Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said they will continue to try and stop kava, and other illicit drugs, from entering the community. “In this case we are making an application to the court for forfeiture of the vehicle,” he said. “People need to realise these substances are illegal and trying to bring them into Gove will not be tolerated.”

Oenpelli sexual offenders to face court Two men were charged with sexual offences resulting from separate incidents in Oenpelli. Detective senior sergeant Scott Manley from the Sex Crimes Division said that members of the Child Abuse Taskforce (CAT), Darwin Metropolitan and Oenpelli Police had arrested a 54 year-old Oenpelli man on Monday, February 27. “The tireless work of the CAT and Sex Crimes Division has resulted in this alleged offender being charged with: six counts of sexual intercourse of a child under 16 years; three counts of deprivation of liberty; one count of committing an act of gross indecency with child under 16 years; and two counts of indecent dealing of a child under 16 years. “Police also arrested a second man, aged 18 years, in a separate incident. Detective senior sergeant Clint Sims said detectives from the Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and Katherine Investigations Section arrested the man at Beswick. “Police allege the man has been driving around the Beswick Community supplying petrol and cannabis to local teenagers in hope of receiving sexual favours,” Det. snr sgt Sims said. “Police allege that on one occasion the man drove three teenagers to an isolated location where he supplied them with petrol to sniff. “It is alleged once the teenagers became affected by the fumes, the man exposed himself to one of the teenagers while attempting to entice her into a sexual act. “In two separate incidents Police allege the man supplied petrol and cannabis to a teenager in exchange for an introduction to a girl to have sex with.” Detective Sims said the alleged incidents occurred in 2011 and 2012. A WOMEN’S forum was hosted out at Gulkula (the Garma site) recently to find out what the concerns of women in the communities were especially regarding their children’s futures. The event was well attended and there were many concerns expressed by the women who attended with education of utmost importance. Coordinated by Susie Hayes from the Arnhem Education Office she said it was the first time in years the clans had united and worked productively for the same cause and this in itself was highly emotional. “All the ladies that attended have voiced their desire to unite on a regular basis, empower themselves and work together as a team,” she said. “They also suggested men have regular forums to give them strength together to lead their children and that there should be regular youth forums to motivate and educate the young.” The women decided to have continuing talks, maybe they would not find solutions but would establish pathways towards solutions. Yalmay Yunupingu urged the women to take leadership roles. “We have to be good role models,” she said. “We must always carry hope, that’s what brings success. School is important. “I always carry high expectations for Indigenous children and education creates pathways. It is time to get up and do something for our community and people.” Laklak II Burarrwanda urged mothers to look after their children and make sure they go to school. “All women need to stand up for our rights and be strong,” she said. Gaylili Stubbs said that every person has a value and you get your values from the people that surround you, your family and extended family. “Young girls learn by watching and I wish I had started at your age to do the things you want to do,” she said. “I have a heavy heart walking around the streets and see young people sniffing petrol. We need to do something now before it gets worse.” Eunice Marika said some of the children were thinking the wrong way. “Learning will provide them a better life and we need to make sure they go to school,” she said. “They need to grow up like the intelligent women they are.” Yananymul Mununggurr said women should not be discriminated against and have equal opportunities for leadership. “Discrimination needs to stop in the workplace. We need to stand up in our personal and professional lives,” she said. “Others will say ‘you are a Yolngu woman - you cannot do it - you have nothing to give’. “I still have a lot to give. We all have a lot to give. I believe we have the information and the power to make things happen.” All in all the women agreed that education was the key for a better future for their children and grandchildren. Education should start in the home and women should ensure their children went to school everyday. It was seen as the means to raise community standards and awareness. The women wished for their children to be able to ‘walk in both worlds’ and ‘people from all communities should be treated equally.’
Local member for Nhulunbuy Lynne Walker with Yalmay Yunupingu, Yali Gurruwiwi, 5, and Gawukawu Gurruwiwi, 9.

Laklak II Burarrwanda and Multhara Munungurr spoke at the forum.
The forum for women highlighted that improved school attendance was a key to the future.

Survey looks at bio-security RESIDENTS with fruit and vegetable plants in the Nhulunbuy and Yirrkala areas are being asked to make themselves known to local Biosecurity officers as part of an upcoming plant health survey. DAFF Biosecurity, formerly the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS), will work with local land owners, residents, government and industry for the survey which will run from March 19 to 23. Senior Entomologist with DAFF Biosecurity’s Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy (NAQS), Glenn Bellis said the survey aimed to record the plant pests, diseases and weeds of Nhulunbuy, Yirrkala and immediate areas with a focus on species of biosecurity importance. “Knowledge of the plants growing in the area and the pests attacking them helps us to assess the risk posed by biosecurity threats associated with pests and diseases and
greatly improves the effectiveness of our efforts,” he said. “If we survey someone’s vegetables and fruit trees we can also give them advice on any pests and diseases they may come across - this will help them to understand and control any problems.” Mr Bellis said that biosecurity was central to protecting Australia’s natural environment and economically valuable agricultural industries from exotic pests and diseases. Community liaison officer in Nhulunbuy Vern Patullo said it was important for residents with commercial plants to make themselves known to the survey team. “We need the community’s support in letting us know whether they’re growing fruit or vegetables, otherwise we have no way of finding out where the potential threats may lie,” he said. “The types of places we are interested in are residential gardens
with fruit or vegetables growing as well as school or community market gardens.” Mr Patullo said that to access the areas required, the survey team would work with local land owners and custodians including Yirrkala Business Enterprises, the local Government Business Manager and Rio Tinto. Officers with expertise in plant diseases, insect pests, and weeds will work with Dhimurru to help them during the five-day survey and will provide training to their staff in surveillance for plant pests, diseases and weeds. The plant health survey will run from March 19 to 23 in Nhulunbuy, Yirrkala and surrounding areas. For more information, or to include your property as part of the survey, please contact DAFF Biosecurity officers Vern Patullo on 8987 1136 or Glenn Bellis on 8920 7024.

Landcare grants for junior environmentalists A GRANTS programme to fund environmental projects in schools and community groups across the country was launched last week (March 1). Corporate Express and Landcare Australia launched the $75,000 grants programme and 15 successful schools and groups will receive a Go Green Grant of up to $5000 to support innovative projects that bring about education in environmental issues, focus on sustainability, promote recycling initiatives or help improve the school’s or local area’s natural environment. Corporate Express understands that the next generation of landcarers can make all the difference to the planet and has partnered with Landcare Australia to support the local schools and youth
groups that educate this next generation about the importance of environmental conservation and protection. President of Corporate Express Australia and New Zealand Jay Mutschler said, “Environmental sustainability is a core component of our business, so we are delighted to have the opportunity to make a further positive impact in the community by supporting teachers and students with the Go Green Grants Program.” Heather Campbell, Landcare Australia CEO, is looking forward to seeing more young people working on sustainability projects and learning about their roles in the future protection of our land and natural environment. “Junior Landcare is all about creating learning opportunities
in outdoor living classrooms and encouraging young people to care for the environment. This Corporate Express Junior Landcare grants program is a great way to actively engage young Australians in a hands-on environmental project,” she said. Further to the grants programme, teachers will also have a chance to win a $5000 shopping spree with Corporate Express by entering the Go Green Shopping Spree competition. New shade protection for Nhulunbuy Playgroup members. A REPRESENTATIVE from Rio Tinto Alcan called in to the Nhulunbuy Playgroup’s open day to see what their community grant had funded. Christine Wallace popped in to have a look at the new shaded area erected last week by Gove Canvas Repair. The sun shade was funded by the Community Assistance and Partnership Grant the playgroup received last
year from Rio Tinto Alcan. Several new families attended the open day as well as some of the regular participants. letters to the editor Corporation overlooks our local traders I am writing to you to address an issue that may have been overlooked in a statement by Dr Ross Theedom, Nhulunbuy Corporation, in the Arafura Times last week. We, the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce Committee, the people of Nhulunbuy, and East Arnhem, thank the Nhulunbuy Corporation for the opportunity in getting Digital TV services to us in an early timely manner. Although we do wish to point out it is unfortunate that the Nhulunbuy Corporation, a major service provider not only to the homes in Nhulunbuy, but also to the businesses of Nhulunbuy, overlooks the local traders to warn
and promote the onslaught of digital, set-top boxes in the coming months. The Chamber of Commerce members, like many others, did read the article on page 4 about ‘Digital TV ahead of schedule’, but the promotion of Darwin businesses for the rush on set top boxes is an unfortunate blow to the local service providers here in Nhulunbuy, which serve our local economy. We have very good service providers here that do provide competitive prices on many products such as set-top boxes. You would think the Nhulunbuy Corporation would help promote the companies that pay the rates allowing the Nhulunbuy Corporation
Dentist coming to Gove NHULUNBUY will see a private dental practice resume later this month. Dr Anand Patel will be providing a two days a week service, Wednesdays and Thursdays, which will hopefully grow once he is able to ascertain demand. The establishment of the practice has been made possible thanks to collaboration with NT Government’s Department of Health and the support of Pacific Aluminium with accommodation and meals. At this stage scheduling of appointments is through Dr Patel’s Darwin practice on 8948 1225. LAST Friday saw the release of the 2011 data from the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and the MySchool website. While the NT faces some big challenges, especially for our remote students, testing in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across the Territory show that in 11 of 12 areas tested, there continues to be improvement. It’s a shame
that the My School website is used as a tool to rank schools in a league table at score position against national benchmarks; it fails to look at the important incremental improvements. It’s also a shame that the NT News continues to post a full-page coloured chart with, not surprisingly, red for schools ‘substantially below the national average’ and other shades through to green for ‘substantially above the national average’. What I find unforgiveable is that the NT News mistakenly lists some of the results for Nhulunbuy Primary Year 5 as in the ‘red’ and the next day publishes a ‘clarification’ with no apology. There’s no escaping the fact that schools have a responsibility to do everything they can to teach the basics of literacy and numeracy; it’s at the core of all learning. But it’s not all our schools do and I see many great programmes, happy kids and hard-working teachers across

to operate? The Chamber of Commerce did do some investigation to the service providers prior to this letter, and found that not only were they not contacted about the onslaught of set-top boxes, but the companies themselves were not aware of the early delivery of digital TV. It would be appreciated that the Nhulunbuy Corporation was to remember the local providers before handing other outside businesses, information and business from our already slowing economy. ROYAL Darwin Hospital’s new 100-bed short term patient accommodation facility - dubbed the medi-hotel - is progressing rapidly, with work now moving to its walls and roof. The facility will provide accommodation for remote area patients while they are in Darwin receiving treatment. Minister for Health Kon Vatskalis toured the Commonwealth funded $18.6 million facility last week with some of RDH’s new first-year intern doctors. “It is great to be able to show these new doctors the gains the Northern Territory is making in our ability to offer treatment and accommodation options for our patients,” Mr Vatskalis said. “The 50-unit complex’s walls are now up, roof work is commencing, and the building of the eight accommodation blocks and administration area is progressing well. “Among the uses, this facility will provide a home away from home for remote area patients while they are receiving treatment.” Senator Trish Crossin said the medihotel, due to be finished mid-year, is a valuable asset in delivering better health outcomes for Territorians. “The vastness of the Territory can be a challenge at times, a reality some of our new intern doctors who have grown up and studied here would be aware of. “It’s not hard to realise the difference a facility such as this will make to remote and rural patients requiring hospital treatment.” Mr Vatskalis welcomed the intern doctors to RDH, some of whom were already quite familiar with the hospital. “Of the 27 interns who’ve joined Royal Darwin Hospital this year about half have completed their studies through the NT Medical Program and this shows their passion and commitment to improving health care in the Territory,” he said. “It’s great to hear the enthusiasm that new Territory-trained doctors have for their future careers delivery healthcare to Territorians.

IT was all about cloud computing at the Walkabout Lodge on Wednesday, February 29. East Arnhem businesses were invited to join Lirrwi Tourism and the Chamber of Commerce NT for a coffee, croissant, and a chin wag early on Wednesday morning and listen to a very informative discussion on the concepts and applications of cloud computing. Martyn Dominy of Sydney-based company MYCFO Cloud Accounts took time out of his busy Nhulunbuy visit to explain in layman terms, to roughly 40 interested business people, the scope to which cloud computing has benefits and profiting potential. If you were unable to make it to the seminar please call Treacy in the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce NT Office on 8987 1985 to get Martyn’s details for further information.

CDEPRU is a new initiative of FaHCSIA to support CDEP providers and increase their capacity through facilitating their involvement in innovative training and employment programmes. Two pilot programmes in the NT and SA have been funded to support the implementation of CDEP Extension Programs as a whole of department response to the Bath Report. In the Northern Territory Batchelor Institute has been supporting CDEP providers to develop innovative responses to the challenges of cultural survival, maintenance and the successful participation in training that leads to employment and safer, stronger and healthier communities. TASI’s Centre for Education and Foundation Skills has been specialising in language, literacy and numeracy workforce development strategies for CDEP providers.

Mr Mitchell acknowledged TASI’s innovation in providing learners with the fundamental literacy and numeracy skills necessary to successfully participate in training. “Signing the MOU represents a culmination of dedication and commitment of the two Institutes to foster partnership that will increase connection and capacity and enhance educational outcomes for our learners across SA and NT,” said Mr Mitchell. The catalyst for the partnership was the establishment of the two pilot Community Development and Employment Program Resource Units (CDEPRU) by FaHCSIA in June 2011. Batchelor Institute and TASI have identified the significance of a strategic partnership and worked towards an MOU to formalise collaboration between the two organisations. The search for NT’s musical talent is on THE search has begun for the next big thing in the Territory’s music world with the Battle of the School Bands competition launched last week. Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the winners from each category will be invited to play at Bassinthegrass on Saturday May 26. “Bassinthegrass has become a must see event in the Territory and a great part of our Territory lifestyle,” Mr Henderson said. “I know Territory kids are keen to get a look at the line up which will be revealed when tickets go on sale on March 15.” Battle of the Bands provides the opportunity for kids to get skills in the music industry and the chance at pursuing a career in the music industry and this year a new category to the competition featuring solo and duo talents is being introduced. A series of school heats will be held in March and April with the final in Darwin on Friday April 13 as part of National Youth Week. The workshop at Nhulunbuy High School will be on Tuesday April 3. Chief Minister Paul Henderson also launched a t-shirt design competition for students to win the chance to have their design featured on the official Bassinthegrass 2012 shirt. The Battle of the Bands competition is open to all middle and senior school students in the Territory, including non-government schools. Contestants will be required to perform only original music. The Battle of the School Bands competition will be integrated into middle years, senior years and Vocational Education and Training subject assessments and students may use the competition to align with and gain credit towards their studies. CHIEF Minister Paul Henderson welcomed the record number of new student enrolments to Charles Darwin University this year. A recent decision by your partner may seem quite hard to understand at first. Don’t take it at face value, however. A powerful aspect to Uranus later this week will give you a bright idea. Be sure to act on this and stick by it if you want to reap the financial reward that this should bring. Romance. Don’t be afraid to show your feelings more directly than you have up to now. If you are too subtle, you will not be noticed.

Your self-confidence will be especially high at the moment. You may need to be the one who takes the initiative in a new relationship.

You need to deal head-on with an issue which you have been trying to avoid. Romance. Your partner will appreciate a few words of encouragement. You might not realise how much they value your support.
A long-standing financial deal will work out much better than you expected. Don’t waste your windfall on something which will only give you a short-term benefit. Romance. A favourable aspect to Mars could make you a little on-edge at times. Don’t give in to an emotional outburst from your partner and do your best to deal with criticism constructively.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) You may need to persist a little harder in order to get everything that you want. A recent set-back will only be serious if you use it as an excuse to give up altogether. Romance. The next few days will be a very fruitful period for you and your love life. Make the most of them!
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A friend who contacts you from out of the blue may not realise how busy you are. Don’t miss a chance to get together with this person, however, because they have an important message for you. Romance. You may be feeling a little up and down at the moment. An unexpected compliment from a person whom you respect will have a strong impact on your mood.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) A colleague at work who has been irritating you recently must be dealt with as sensitively as possible. A person whom you have met through work may be interested in putting your relationship onto a more romantic footing.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A favourable aspect to Saturn will help to anchor your thoughts in reality. You need to take those ideas which are actually likely to work and follow them through. Romance. A chance encounter later in the week will give you an opportunity to meet somebody who is going to have an important influence over your future. Do your best to find out as much about this person as possible.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) You may soon get the chance to travel around. You have been getting in a bit of a rut recently, and this would be a good way to brighten up your life. Romance. A misunderstanding with your partner could create problems for a while. Make sure that you don’t rely on a message without checking it carefully.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Don’t get any more deeply involved with an acquaintance who has let you down badly in the past. This person will let you down again if you give them a chance. Romance. You should be feeling very close to your partner at the moment. Time spent alone together will help you to smooth over some recent problems which have created a distance between you.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A problem which has been dragging on for months will finally be resolved. Don’t be slow to thank the people who make this possible. Romance. You may be expecting a little too much from your partner. Be realistic about what is really possible and don’t be ungrateful if they can’t quite come up to your high standards at times!
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) Don’t waste time on a project which is unlikely to actually lead anywhere. You have a lot of more important things to deal with and don’t need to chase red herrings. Romance. You will need to be ruthlessly honest with your partner. Don’t gloss over an incident which you know has affected them deeply.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A visit from a close friend will help you to focus your thoughts on matters outside your work. You have been putting a lot into your career recently and need time to reflect. Romance. Don’t let a recent disagreement upset you. You are feeling quite vulnerable at the moment and will take criticism seriously, especially if it comes from somebody whom you care about.

Gove Junior football needs volunteers THE Gove Junior Football Club Inc is preparing for another busy season. The 2012 soccer season is due to start in April and this year the club needs volunteers support to fill vacancies so they can continue supporting all age groups. Coaching and assistant coaching positions are required for U6 , U10, U12, U15 age groups. No extensive experience is required and all that is needed is a desire to assist the sporting community and the kids in Gove. There are also vacancies for committee members to assist with the running of the club and fundraising. For over 25 years the GJFC has provided soccer coaching, interschools competitions and out of town sporting competitions while developing mature team spirited children and young adults. If you’re interested in helping out in any way please contact the secretary on 0438 861 599 or email gove.soccer@live.com.au

Billets wanted for soccer championshps THE Arnhem Cluster is organising the School Sport NT Boys’ Under 12 Football (soccer) championships in Nhulunbuy from Wednesday June 13 to Friday June 15. Organiser Ian Darlington said they envisage that there will be about 100 boys in need of billeting at that time. “These boys will be from Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Alice Springs and other more remote regions of the Northern Territory,” Mr Darlington said. “If you are able to help us in billeting these students we would love to hear from you. We are more than happy to discuss what the whole process entails if you are not sure whether you wish to be involved.” For further information call 8987 0018 or 0431 346 990.

Nine boats in race three of John Bedwell series By NEAL BAULCH THE weather was fine and the winds light for the nine boats which took part in race three of the John Bedwell blue water series. Catamarans Wolley, Magic, Over Indulgence, Varlee, Hobie 18, Sans Souci with monos Waitere, My Donna and Sauvignon started off from the tug cyclone buoys and headed off on a reach to round the five fathom marker off the export wharf. Then there was a down wind leg to West Woody buoy, a windward leg to John Preston buoy, another down wind leg back to West Woody buoy and then back into the wind to round the five fathom marker and back to the tug cyclone buoys. There was some action around West Woody and John Preston buoys as the boats were criss-crossing back and forth to round both marks. There were rumours of Hobie 18 tacking too early at John Preston buoy and then having to push off the mark as the tide was against them. No protest flags were flown and they were let off lightly. Just put it down to how not to round a mark. It was good to see the two smaller cats out with Josh and crew having a great time on their Maricat. Those on board Sans Souci were a bit concerned that they were going to lose face and be overtaken by mono sailor Kerry on Sauvignon, who had managed to sail well into the wind on the way home, but Sans Souci managed to stay in front by four minutes. Eighteen minutes separated the three monos across the finish line and it was good to see Neil and Cassie out on My Donna honing their racing skills. Line honours and first place on corrected time went to Glen and Justine on Hobie 18. Second place went to Magic, third to Wolley, fourth to Waitere and Sans Souci with fifth place. It was nice too see that many boats out. Thanks again to our race series sponsors John Bedwell Management Pty Ltd.

Highland dancers off to the wild west
ADA Highland dancers heading off on the Wild West Tour.

THERE will be a full dress rehearsal of the Arafura Dance Association’s (ADA) Highland dancers on Sunday. The girls who have been preparing for their Wild West Tour invite interested persons to their dress rehearsal which will be on March 11 at the town hall from 2.30pm to 4pm The eight talented Highland dancers are travelling to Western Australia for two major competitions. On Saturday, March 24, they will be competing at the Eastern Goldfields Highland Dancing Championships in Kalgoorlie and on Sunday, April 1, they are competing at the Western Australian State Championships in Perth. ADA Highland dance instructor Sharlene Cardilini said these competitions attract the best Highland dancers in Australia. “Some of these dancers are competing and winning overseas,” she said. “It will be a fantastic experience for our students as we have never seen
performances by dancers at this level before. “Although we’re up against tough competition, Arafura Dance students have been in serious training since October last year so we’re ready to give it our best. “While we are in Kalgoorlie we will also be attending workshops and classes at Kalgoorlie Dance Academy - well respected nationwide for their top class Highland dancers. The eight students from Arafura Dance who will be competing are Alicia Wong, Megan Donovan, Eliza Jovicic, Emily Tankard, Kirsten Savage, Codi Roath, Yllana Waller and Hannah Devon. “We have been busy fundraising for the trip but any shortfall will be paid for by parents,” Ms Cardilini said. “Although we have travelled to Cairns and Townsville to compete and intend to continue to do so our Wild West Tour will likely be a one-off trip and a major highlight in our dancers careers.”

Up-and-coming star visits home A YOUNG tennis player who has been improving her skills at the Pro-One Tennis Academy has been spending a couple of weeks at home in Gove. Caitlyn Mitchell was accepted into the academy on the Gold Coast last year and plans to complete her year 12 studies while there. The 16-year-old said she applied for a position for last year as she wanted to see if she could make a career out of playing tennis. By being on the east coast it has given her many more opportunities to compete in competitions and improve her rankings. In the year she has been away she has ranked in the top 300 from her previous best of 700. Caitlyn is the second-highest ranked NT player for her age group. She has also qualified to go to France with the Queensland team. She had a spell at home to rest an ankle although she said she has kept up her fitness regime which included swimming and riding. Her time has been well spent as she has done her schoolwork online. She is in year 11 this year and after completing year 12 she is looking at applying for a college tennis scholarship in the US. “I decided when I was 14 that I would like to see if I was good enough to make a career out of tennis. “I live with an aunty in Broadbeach and the academy is at Runaway Bay and we train from 8am to 6.30pm with some time off during the day for academic studies.” Manager of the Gove Tennis Club Nicky Mayer said Caitlyn was an excellent role model for the younger players in the club. “She has been coming down and helping with them and when some watched her play against her father last week they were all
Caitlyn Mitchell and Nicky Mayer at the Gove Tennis Club. inspired and went out there and made some great shots,” Mrs Mayer said. “When she applied she already had many of the skills needed and now focuses not only on her playing but also on her competitiveness and mental toughness which are enhanced by her focus and drive.
“She is extremely self motivated and her grades show she is working on all aspects of her development. “Caitlyn started playing tennis in Gove six years ago and cleaned up at the Gove Open last year.” Caitlyn said, “If you have a dream follow
it and be prepared to put in the hard work. Anything less than 100 per cent is not a full commitment.” She is currently partially sponsored by Wilson’s Sports and gets some funding assistance from the Gove Tennis Club Junior Development Fund for travel expenses.
Yirrkala athlete on track for Boston Marathon A YIRRKALA athlete was one of three inspiring young Indigenous runners who climbed over Canberra’s harsh Brindabella Mountains to secure their place in the world-famous Boston Marathon in the USA. Just two months out from the popular event, Yirrkala’s Jamie Wunungmurra, Palm Island’s Kelsey Youngblutt, and Derby’s Tegan Pigram have proved to themselves and the project they are ready. Mr Wunungmurra said he was on track for the marathon and regularly trained in Yirrkala. “It is difficult to breathe in different atmospheres but I wasn’t too cold in Canberra. “I am really looking forward to the run in Boston and encourage others to run to keep fit,” he said. Rob de Castella is extremely proud of their weekend performance in one of Canberra’s toughest running events, the Stromlo 30km Lightning Strike held in February. “They have highlighted their guts and determination by completing their gruelling event that saw them run along fire trails, up and over mountain ranges, and even through a creek crossing as high as their thigh” he said. “This is a testament to their training and commitment. They have come a long way since their last 30km run in October. “This run is a great lead-up and preparation for the tough Boston course which has some big hills including the famous heartbreak hill at 30kms.” The Boston Marathon is the oldest continuing marathon on earth where Charlie Maher ran last year and smashed his New York Marathon time by over 10 minutes. These three athletes will be running in his footsteps after he impressed organisers and competitors alike. “I’m really looking forward to these three building on what Charlie did in 2011” Deek said. Applications in the programme this year have already closed and organisers said they had a great response from Arnhem Land. Nine applications will be competiing at a try outs festival in Ramingining in a couple of week’s time.
