Wind in sails for 2012 at Boat Club

Neal Baulch (Notch) competes in the opening event of 2012 at the Gove Boat Club with San Sousi. By MARJO HALLOWELL THE start of the race marked the start of this year’s sailing calendar and the weather was ideal. As the Gove Boat Club reaches a membership of 300 a revitalised club is moving forward in jibs and tacks. The first race for the year saw six boats compete in the now fortnightly sailing race around the islands. Magic was first past the line and being part of the crew was magic as it seemed to fly along the water. The Gove Boat Club is ready for an exciting year of activities and has been re-focusing on being a family club and this is proving to be very successful.

Your Local!

Last year it was closed for some major cleaning and maintenance and the main overhaul was how people saw the club. Now open four days a week with meals for families available it is becoming a club where people can come and relax and children can climb the huge shade tree that provides shelter for their area. A new manager has taken the helm after sailing up the east coast of Australia and dropping anchor in Gove Harbour. Rob Watts and his wife, Alilah, arrived a month ago and have been busy ensuring the smooth running of the club. Members are actively involved working within the club as it re-establishes itself. With membership now almost 300 Mr Watts

said it was encouraging to see that it is the best it has been for almost a decade. “This is a fantastic bay to sail in,” said Mr Watts who has been sailing since he was eight as a sea scout in Victoria. “We set off on an adventure six months ago and saw this job advertised and felt it was perfect for us. “Magic is my fourth multi hulled boat and I built it myself. It took 18 months to get in the water and then 10 years to finish it off.” An electronics technician he has worked with many top named entertainers throughout Australia and has chosen the slower pace of Gove as his home for the next couple of years. “I looked at coming up to Gove many years

ago but never made it. When I saw this job advertised I jumped at the opportunity. “I can see the club has a great future and we will keep encouraging families and young people to go sailing. “At present we are open four days a week but we do have the capacity to expand should demand dictate we do so.” Mr Watts sailed in the race with eight crew as the club encourages people to go out on the water and his 17 metre (57’) catamaran was more than capable of having a few extrasTHIRS on board. All members need to do is turn up on the day and express a desire to join in the racing and can generally be placed on a crew. Race results will be published in next week’s Sport section.

Rio general manager moves on AFTER just over three years in Gove the general manager of Rio Tinto Alcan in Gove is moving on. Julio Costa took on the role of the general manager when Rio bought the plant from Alcan. Now he feels he is ready for a change and has been appointed to the Rio Tinto Energy plant in Mozambique and leaves Gove this week. This is a coal mine and having worked in the bauxite alumina field for 20 years he felt it was time for a change and a new challenge. The mine is in the process of being established so he will be working with a crew of 3000 in the set up stage of the development. The mainly Portuguese speaking population will give him the opportunity to again use his mother tongue. With his two adult children living in Perth he and his wife, Marisa, plan to return to Australia as they became Australian citizens while they were here. Mr Costa said he would really miss the community in Gove. “Life here is very laid-back and time is a little slow. It is a great place to live. “Looking back I wish I had spent more personal time being more involved with community events, other than as representing Rio,” he said. “I enjoyed playing soccer, the real football, while I was here and also enjoyed running. “I hope to be able to take some of the aspects of living here with me to Mozambique, especially when it comes to helping out in the

community on a more personal level.” The mine he will be working in is at Tete which is near the Zimbabwe border. There is a population of 300 000 there so it is somewhat larger than Gove. He will be a FIFO (fly in fly out) with Marisa remaining at their home in Mabuto the capital with a population of four million. He said he indicated his willingness to do something different in the middle of last year and was pleased he had been given this opportunity. They expect to see a lot of ex-patriots in Mabuto as they are well represented there with a number of mining companies operating there. Of his achievements while in Gove he said the Sustainable Safety programme was probably the one which he rated the highest. “This has empowered the employees to take control of their own safety by implementing projects specific to their own fields of expertise regardless of what level they work at. There have been many changes made to ensure the safety of all the workers. It has given them the capacity to prepare for good implementation of resolutions.” A good platform for the future is what has also been established and he sees the plant operating long after the bauxite being mined here runs out. “I also believe we have improved government relations during the last few years and ensured the operations remain transparent. “I feel confident I am leaving the operation in good hands as we have the right team

with a great leadership and a great core of employees. They are the right people to address issues throughout the transition. “It says a lot for the operation that we are still able to attract new employees from throughout the country.” Having worked in Gove Mr Costa has learnt much of Australian history, especially in relation to the indigenous history. “I have learned much about Land Rights and had the opportunity and capacity to learn about the Traditional Owners. This is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life and I will miss the possibility to stay here and learn more.” The new general manager is Frank Willsdon who has worked for the last 30 years in the petro chemical industry internationally. Mr Costa said he was confident he would be a benefit to the operation and they had had several weeks working together so the transition would be smooth ensuring consistency throughout the process. He said one of the most outstanding features of the staff is their respect for which he was grateful. “I’ve upset some people throughout the years but always had their respect. People here are not judgmental and they give everyone a fair go. “I admire and respect what the employees do both at work and through their personal lives. It is this inspiration and encouragement that I hope to take with me and utilise to make a difference to the people of Mozambique on a personal level.”

Julio Costa is heading to Mozambique to take on a new role with Rio Tinto Energy. He said he was looking forward to the new challenge.

Wild dogs being targetted in cull DINGOES are being targeted by the Nhulunbuy Corporation Limited in a bid to free the area of troublesome pests. Compliance manager Rick Stephen said they went out last Tuesday and Wednesday nights and early on Wednesday morning in an attempt to shoot any dogs within the town lease. They worked around Hindle Oval, the Harmony Shelter and the land around the proposed Bunawul medical centre. “We didn’t manage to see any at those times so now we will be baiting them this week,” he said. They will be targeting the same areas as they went

through last week. Mr Steven said they would lay down meat to attract the animals and then try to trap them. “We do ask members of the public to report any sightings of dingoes, wild camp dogs and dingo crosses especially within the town lease.” “There have been reports of two white dingo crosses across the road from the hospital.” He said the wild dogs were a problem as they often showed no fear and had been known to attack domestic dogs. “If residents can advise us whenever they see them it will help us identify the areas we need to focus on.”

Three arrested over ‘fridging’ robberies

Man hit near airport flown to Darwin for treatment

NHULUNBUY Police had a busy week between Christmas and the new year with about 30 more calls than usual in that period. Senior Sergeant Alex Brennan said they had a spate of unlawful entries two weeks ago but nothing had been reported last week. He said they had about six unlawful entries over a 48 hour period. “Three males were arrested for unlawful entry and one of those was remanded in custody and appeared in Darwin. He received eight months in gaol for his offenses, he said. He added there had been no further reports since those incidents. He urged residents who had been ‘fridged’ to contact police rather than just list their reports on the social networking sites. “We will only investigate items that are brought to our attention.

A MAN suffered serious head injuries and a badly broken leg after being hit by a passing vehicle as he walked down the verge of a road near the airport. The 43-year-old man was walking down Melville Bay Road when he was hit just before 8pm on Tuesday said acting officer in charge of Nhulunbuy Police Senior Sergeant Alex Brennan. “St John Ambulance and local Police attended the scene, and the man was initially taken to Gove Hospital suffering a broken leg and lacerations to the head. “The man has since been evacuated to Royal Darwin Hospital for further examination. “Police do not believe the driver to be at fault in this instance and urge the public to take due care when walking along high traffic areas, said Snr Sgt Brennan.

Meat pie manslaughter conviction served AN ARGUMENT over a meat pie that resulted in the death of a woman will see her cousin in gaol for seven years. The NT Supreme Court heard that a 47-year-old woman stabbed her cousin, in the chest in Ski Beach in June last year. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Monday, January 9. Chief Justice Trevor Riley sentenced the woman to seven years in prison and fixed a non-parole period of three years and six months. The court heard the cousins had

been drinking at the Arnhem Club before returning to a Ski Beach home where the 44-year-old victim started cooking a meal. Justice Riley said the woman became angry at her cousin because she thought she had been using other people’s food to cook her meal. “The argument was over who owned a tinned meat pie, he said. He said the pair continued to yell at each other before she grabbed a steak knife from the

sink and stabbed her cousin in the chest. He said the two women were “inseparable and grew up together on Elcho Island, but the offender had a “rough life after a string of violent relationships. “A drunken argument followed by a grossly disproportionate attack. “Such conduct is both disturbingly familiar and completely unacceptable, Justice Riley said. An autopsy revealed the victim died of blood loss and a collapsed right lung.

However, some Australians intend to keep working indefinitely, with 13 per cent of older workers in the labour force saying that they never intend to retire. For the other 3.9 million who plan to retire at some time in the future, 36 per cent said the main influence on when to retire was financial security. Personal health or physical ability also influenced retirement decisions for older workers (25

per cent) followed by becoming eligible for a pension (10 per cent). Just over half of the older workers currently in the labour force, who intend to retire, expect their superannuation to be their main source of income at retirement. A further 26 per cent expect a government pension or allowance to be their main source of income. REGIONAL universities will receive the vast majority of a Gillard Government investment of almost $400 million to support new state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities at university campuses across the nation. Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans, said the investment was part of the Government’s commitment to removing the barriers to higher education and opening the doors of Australia’s universities to all students no matter where they live. Regional universities will receive $268 million of the $377 million Gillard Government programme. “The funding will assist our regional universities to improve the quality of teaching and learning by improving access to world-class facilities expanding course offerings and enhancing pathways between Institutes of TAFE and universities,” Senator Evans said. “This adds to a range of initiatives

already announced that will boost higher education opportunities for regional Australians.” Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean said the number of regional students attending university was once again on the increase . “Young people who study in the regions tend to stay in the regions,” he said. The new funding will be shared by Charles Darwin University, the Bachelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, Charles Sturt University, University of New England, University of Ballarat, Central Queensland University, Southern Cross University and the University of Southern Queensland. Last month’s announcement complements other Government initiatives which are transforming the face of higher education in regional Australia and making university study a reality for more Australians than ever before.

Yirrkala artist in US exhibition ART from East Arnhem Land featured in an exhibition in the United States. The exhibition at Ketchum is a dedicated Australian indigenous art space. One of a few in the United States. This will be the first exhibit of art on bark from Yirrkala. This exhibit of barks, mokoys (spirit figures) and larrikitj (ceremonial poles) has been almost two years in preparation and artist Wukun Wanambi and Harvey art adviser Kade MacDonald travelled from Australia for both the official opening and to host community cultural events programme that started on December 29. Four short films and comments by Wanambi and MacDonald elaborated on the art and culture of the Yolngu people. Wukun Wanambi is the oldest son of Mithili Wanambi, clan leader and renowned painter, who passed away in 1981. Wukun learned the sacred designs of his father from elders who had kept the information in trust for him. His first painting was a depiction of Bamurrunu, a sacred, white-domed rock in the middle of Trial Bay. It was the first time the motif had been painted since his father’s death. The Buku-Larrngay Mulka art centre at Yirrkala was established in 1975 and artists working with the centre have won many major awards, including five in a row in the late-1990s for bark painting. Buku Larrngay in Yolngu means “the first rays of

the sun on your face at sunrise” and “mulka” means “to hold or protect.” Elders and artists who control the centre have a long history of using their art to influence and challenge colonial mainstream forces that have sought to marginalize them. Most famously, in 1963, artists sent a petition on bark to Parliament House in Canberra to protest against mining on their traditional lands. By the mid-1980s they were the first Aboriginal group to successfully win a high court challenge to have their lands returned to them as traditional owners. This set a major precedent for other indigenous groups to file successful land title claims. Yirrkala was perhaps the earliest community in Arhem Land to embrace the production of art for these reasons. Yirrkala artists have maintained a strong discipline in their art-using only natural materials and following ancestral designs rigorously.

Wukun Wanambi relaxes in the US.

Tracks closed to prevent further damage after rain DHIMURRU has spent a lot of time and money on track maintenance over the last 12 months. The tracks are in reasonable condition even after the heavy rain between Christmas and New Year. Some tracks, including Manangaymi (Scout Camp) and Wanuwuy (Cape Arnhem), were damaged and unfortunately Dhimurru has been forced to close them to prevent further damage until repairs can be made. The Latram (Wathawuy) and the Wonga have been closed for the wet season to prevent damage to the road surface and will be opened once the roads dry out. Dhimurru regrets having to make

these closures but it is necessary to prevent future costly repairs. All other recreational areas are open and accessible with appropriate access permits. Dhimurru will keep you posted with information on the radio, on their facebook page, and on the website regarding track closures while repairs are carried out or as conditions dictate. If you have any questions regarding access to Dhimurru recreation areas please do not hesitate to call into the Dhimurru office, check Dhimurru’s emedia sites or phone the permits officer on 8939 2700.

Mozzies under attack THE Nhulunbuy Corporation is busy fogging local trouble spots for mosquitoes. Compliance officer Rick Steven said they had been hampered because of the recent rain but were now making up for lost time. “We are trying to get any trouble spots done first and encourage members of the public to give us a call if they know of any bad areas,” Mr Steven said. “There is a fogging programme in place and this involves a chemical mist being sprayed on still clear nights. This kills the larvae. “Residents are advised to stay clear of any areas they see spraying in progress as chemicals are involved.” As well as the spraying mosquito control blocks are also being placed into ponds and areas of still water.

QantasLink wins accolade THE main airline that flies into Gove, QantasLink, has been named 2012’s ‘Regional Airline of the Year ’ by leading industry journal Air Transport World - beating airlines from across the globe. Air Transport World editors cited QantasLink’s longstanding commitment to delivering an extensive network and excellent customer service for remote and rugged regions of outback Australia. Chief editor of Air Transport World, Geoffrey Thomas said: “QantasLink is more than a regional airline. It’s a lifeline to millions of Australians who live sometimes thousands of kilometres from a capital city and hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town. “QantasLink is many things to many people. It carries tourists to resorts, farmers, social workers, teachers, medical staff and resource industry workers to the outback; and even politicians to and from the nation’s capital Canberra and has a product to match every need.” QantasLink executive manager Narendra Kumar said he was extremely proud of the award win, which recognised the efforts of the entire QantasLink team.

“QantasLink has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1949 when it was a one aircraft operation based in Tamworth. Today QantasLink is Australia’s largest regional carrier operating 57 aircraft to support a network of 56 metropolitan and country destinations and providing customers with seamless connections to Qantas’ domestic and international services. “As a service-focused airline, teams work collaboratively with regional Australian communities to identify and enhance air services in markets that require this essential service for both commerce and leisure,” he said. “In recent times QantasLink has made large-scale investments in product and aircraft to service the needs of our customers. Many of our services have become critical elements of regional customer supply chains transporting labour into major resource projects via connections through the extensive Qantas network.” Mr Kumar will formally accept the award at an official awards ceremony to be hosted by Air Transport World in Singapore on February 13. QantasLink has a daily flight into Gove from both Darwin and Cairns.

Jetstar puts on new flight to Tokyo A NEW flight to Tokyo and increased direct services to Manila and Singapore were announced by Jetstar last week. Acting Chief Minister Delia Lawrie has welcomed the news that the airline had decided to extend its Darwin-Manila route to Tokyo and increase flights to Singapore. “From March 25 Jetstar will introduce a four-times weekly Darwin-Manila-Tokyo service while the Darwin-Singapore route will grow from seven to 10 flights a week,” Ms Lawrie said.

“With growth in on-shore and offshore resource projects in 2012 the increased services to key regional neighbours come at a crucial time for business and tourism travellers.” Ms Lawrie said she was confident of demand for the increased capacity. “Darwin is a gateway to Asia and to the rest of the Territory. It has been rated by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s top 10 cities to visit in 2012. It is growing as a commercial centre and we need extra flights to support that growth.”

 letters to the editor

Mum wants reliable power APoLoGIES from the outset. I fall into the ‘angry mum’ category. And at the time of writing you can add ‘hot and bothered’ to the epithet. There is no doubt that RTAG provides a lot on benefits to this community - far be it my intention to appear ungrateful. Without a mining company in some form this town might not be established; and it is such a wonderful place to live and raise my family. Unfortunately, reliable power supply is not one of those supplied benefits. I am not a direct employee of RTAG and therefore I pay for my power like many other non-RTAG residents so feel justified in making my complaint. Not that it should matter if you have to pay or not a reliable power supply is not an unrealistic expectation. I am happy to pay and would accept the odd power interruption. However, since the big 24 hour outage across town I have endured no less than four unscheduled outages in Nhulunbuy south in the past fortnight. As a mother of two children under two and being pregnant again I find this an unacceptable level of service particularly at the hottest time of year. Unlike recent posts on Nhulunbuy Facebook, I do not agree that frequent outages are something we should all ‘get used to’ nor should it be ‘part of living in Gove’. What we should be doing

is asking questions as to why it keeps happening. Even outages for a short period pose significant inconvenience to families, shift workers trying to sleep and loss of business. If, as has been purported in the past, RTAG value the community why is the community left to the mercy of an aged steam power station? I do not doubt that RTAG staff work hard to fix outages in a timely manner but why do they have to fix so many? So after a cool bath and a play under the hose what do you do with small children in a hot house? Go to the town pool (providing the outage is not on a day it is closed for a school carnival) but then there is only so long you can leave the family out in the hot sun. Aside from the business community why is everyone seemingly so accepting of this situation? I would not be the only full time mum dealing with this. In fact we are all affected. Domestic homes suffer spoiled food stuffs and surges to appliances. Not to mention overheating. Where is the full explanation for the continued intermittent supply? Where is even an apology? Why can’t whatever the problem is be fixed once and for all? Why should those who pay power, rates and water have to install their own generator? Calm down angry mum there is a hotline to call (pardon the pun) for updates on the situation as pub-

lished by Mr Julio Costa: it is 1800 996 508. Not to mention Facebook updates from the RTAG. These are only useful if you have a battery charged on a laptop. The first time I called this hotline the number was answered by a Gove House receptionist. What she lacked in professionalism she made up for with disdain. She couldn’t have cared less and could only tell me that it ‘was a town problem not a refinery problem’ and did not have an estimated time power would return. She told various others who called that day “I have power here (an RTAG property) so yours should be on soon”. When I called the number today (December 16) it rang out. A hotline should be staffed with someone knowledgeable or at least polite. RTAG stop treating the community with contempt. It’s not enough to say that they are informing or engaging the community because they now have a phone number for the public to call. The system must be planned and the person answering must be trained. We are a remote community but we get our services from a multi-national company that posted half-yearly net earnings of $7.1 billion in August. So why can’t we get basic service like reliable power supply. Yours sincerely Charlotte Thompson Nhulunbuy South

The dangers of social media I WISH to address a few issues to the people who regularly use Nhulunbuy Noticeboard on Facebook. Users obviously feel they can use the ‘social media’ to criticise business (Woolworths, IGA, taxi drivers) or discuss perceived offences (breaking road rules, assaults, fridging). These are to name a few. I would like to point out these users well and truly over-step the bounds of what is legally acceptable. A few observations. It may be easy to jump on the computer and vent your disdain of businesses or incidences, however, wouldn’t it be more constructive to either report illegal actions to the police or in the case of the business go and speak to them directly. Much easier on Facebook. Safety in numbers and users are silly enough to jump on the band-wagon. Users should realise so often what is entered is illegal (home traders retailing from home) or is that local policy that is being ignored by RTA and NCL. whatever Nhulunbuy Noticeboard is misused and it is only a matter of time before some-one finds themselves legally liable or information is going to be used in court action. I hope this gives you all something to think about. Name and address supplied and withheld at authors request.

Great start for 2012 in the Territory THE The Northern Territory has got off to a great start in 2012 with last Friday’s historic announcement by joint venture partners INPEX and Total that they will be proceeding with the $34 billion Icthys Gas Project at Blaydin Point in Darwin harbour. Construction of the onshore gas facilities which includes product loading jetties and a 300 megawatt power station is due to commence within weeks and is scheduled for start-up in 2016. Not unlike Gove’s G3 Expansion Project in 2004, except more than 10 times the scale, a worker’s construction village to house some 3000 workers will also be built in Darwin’s rural area.

It was in 2007 that the NT Labor Government, led by then Chief Minister Clare Martin, successfully wooed the project away from WA in what has proved to be an incredible windfall, underpinning the Territory economy for many years to come. THE New Year also brings the commencement of the Cash for Containers scheme in the Territory which will see consumers get a 10 cents return on eligible beverage containers while also reducing rubbish in landfill by promoting recycling. The NT’s legislation is modelled on that of my home state, South Australia, the only other jurisdiction where a container deposit scheme is successfully in place.

More than a dozen collections depots have commenced operation around the Territory with the number expected to grow as the scheme beds down. Alternatively, communities can establish collection ‘points’ where effectively people donate clean and uncrushed eligible containers with the 10 cents return going back to community, not-for-profit groups following containers which make their way from the collection points to depots. The NT Government is providing infrastructure grants of up to $15000 for businesses and community-based organisations which are interested in establishing either collection depots or points. I’m sure we all hope to see

Cycads are not a dog’s best friend

Economic future of Territory secured

JAMES Cook University is warning dog owners that their pets may suffer severe poisoning if they eat the common household cycad plant. This follows the recent death of a young dog from liver failure after eating the leaves and stem of a cycad, also known as sago palm. Penny, an eight-month old cross-breed dog, was brought to JCU’s Veterinary Emergency Centre in Townsville on Christmas Eve after a sudden onset of vomiting and lethargy. Nearly two weeks of intensive therapy in the JCU Veterinary Emergency Centre’s 24-hour intensive care unit could not save her and Penny died from severe liver failure. Dr Philip Judge, Senior Lecturer in veterinary emergency and critical care at JCU, said all parts of the plant are considered extremely poisonous and even eating as little as two seeds could be enough to kill a dog. “The leaves are apparently quite attractivesmelling to dogs, making accidental ingestion likely, with initial symptoms of poisoning usually being vomiting, dehydration and lethargy,” Dr Judge said. “Using appropriate treatment with intravenous fluid therapy and medications the symptoms often subside within 24 to 48 hours or so - only to be replaced by the development of severe liver damage that could result in liver failure and death within seven to 14 days.” He said published mortality rates for dogs with cycad poisoning of between 38 and 60 per cent emphasised how serious the disease was to treat especially once liver failure takes hold. Dr Judge suggested the following precautions for pet owners: ● if possible, have cycads kept away from areas where dogs are kept unsupervised - or alternatively, do not allow dogs to roam free in areas where cycads are planted, ● remove any fallen seeds/nuts to reduce the chances of their being eaten, ● remove any loose vegetation from cycad plants and dispose of them in green waste to reduce the chances of this vegetation being eaten, ● if you see your dog eating a cycad plant, contact your veterinarian immediately for first aid advice. Commonly sold in home and garden centres, cycads are hardy plants that require little care, making them seem ideal for dry tropical areas. “Penny’s illness should be a warning to all dog owners in the North about the plant,” Dr Judge said.

THE final investment decision for the Ichthys Project made by INPEX and Total, securing a $34 billion project for the Territory was welcomed last week by Chief Minister Paul Henderson. “The Territory has secured its economic future and is on the way to becoming the oil and gas capital of Australia,” Mr Henderson said. “This is an historic day for the Territory and the culmination of a significant amount of foresight, planning, work and effort. “It will provide 3000 jobs during construction and the resources growth will underpin our economy for the future providing training, employment and business opportunities for Territorians. “Four years on, since we began chasing the Ichthys project, we are now just weeks away from the start of construction. “In the planning stages, we joined INPEX in signing an Industry Participation Plan to ensure local businesses could achieve their share of the economic growth. “We’re using all arms of the Territory Government to continue to support businesses to help them get the most out of the Ichthys project and the expected growth of the resources sector. “We’ve invested heavily into attracting resource investment into the Territory, including building a marine supply base to help make us the oil and gas capital of Australia. “There are a number of real opportunities for Territorians and students who are at school now will be able to capitalise on these in years to come. “It means today’s year 12 students, apprentices and trainees could be working as engineers, tradesmen and project managers when the Blaydin Point gas plant begins operating by the end of 2016. “The North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas at Charles Darwin University and the Larrakia Trade Training Centre will skill up as many workers locally as possible supported by INPEX and Total.” At the peak of construction a workforce of about 3000 will be required to build the onshore gas facilities, which includes two LNG trains, a liquefied petroleum gas plant and condensate separation plants, product loading jetties and a 300-megawatt power station. Decay never has holidays REGULAR teeth cleaning is one routine that children should keep up during the school holidays, the NT’s Principal Dentist Chris Handbury urged last week. Reminding kids and their families that dental decay ‘doesn’t go on holidays’, Dr Handbury said that to reduce the risk of dental decay, the key oral health messages should be followed year-round. “These key messages are common sense ones but they can be easily overlooked when kids are in holiday mode and enjoying a less structured lifestyle than during school terms,” he said. “Unfortunately it doesn’t take long for tooth decay to set in, and when it does we need to play catch-up, often with dental treatment, to put things right again.” Dr Handbury said children should get in the habit of brushing their teeth and gums after each meal, including lunch. “This is actually easier in the holidays

as kids can usually access a bathroom and toothbrush and paste which at school is more difficult. “I cannot over emphasise the advantages of eating good food, the less processed the better, as this benefits the whole body and not just our teeth. It’s also important to drink plenty of water, which is much healthier and cheaper than sweetened fizzy drinks. “Exercise, whether organised sport or energetic play, is also good for our health and wellbeing, helping to establish an active routine that will be beneficial throughout our lives.” Dr Handbury said public dental clinics will be open during the school holidays, although not on the main public holidays, and people should phone for an appointment. The dental clinics can be contacted at Gove Dental Clinic (after January 16) 8987 0425.

Bakery a fresh idea BY MARJO HALLOWELL

July

USING his loaf is what ex-navy chef John Carter is doing in Nhulunbuy. John and his wife Estelle have re-opened the Peninsula Bakery and Cafe and business is booming. When the bakery closed suddenly earlier this year, Mr Carter, who was a chef in the Royal Australian Navy, knew it was a business opportunity not to be missed. His brother-in-law told him about it and he resigned from the Navy after serving for 19 years. The couple purchased the disused bakery and were set to open on Saturday, July 2, however, they experienced a few teething problems with the ovens not co-operating. Customers had been queuing for the fresh bread and pies since early morning that day. One might have thought we had gone back to the food queues of the Depression years but this was not the case. Come Monday Gove residents were finally able to buy fresh bread. This might seem to be odd to those who have not lived here for long, but, for the locals, that has been a treat they have not experienced for some time. Fresh bread, bread rolls, cream buns, cakes, savoury rolls and of course the good old Aussie favourite- the meat pie - are now all available and the smell of freshly baked goodies is causing quite a stir. On the first Monday of business, Mr Carter prepared the ingredients for enough meat pies for what he thought would last the week. They were all gone by the end of the day. By Friday they had to shut down for the day as they needed to get ahead of the demand. It was all hands on deck baking 5000 pies and sweet treats. They have already employed four locals to work in the bakery and two more to work in the shop and are looking for a chef or baker or pastry chef to add to their staff. At present Mr Carter starts his day at 2am and hasn’t been finishing up until 5pm. They intend to introduce hot lunches and supply other businesses once they get their routine established. “Making pastry is a long process time wise and we just have to get ahead of the demand,” Mr Carter said. “I like to try new ingredients and I have just made Thai Chicken sausage rolls as I like to give our customers a variety of new tastes.” John and Estelle have three young children and look forward to becoming involved within the community once they settle into their new business.

Lifesavers on crocwatch

Lifesavers on croc-watch

‘Round the Island Race’ a salty-free day Photo: MARJO HALLOWELL Alan Cross is already in the lead as Glen Collins, Tony Snelling and Harry Parkinson leave the beach while lifesavers keep an eye out for hungry crocodiles. The event went off without a hitch and luckily for the competitors no crocodiles were spotted on the day. For more photos from the Nippers event held in conjunction with this event see page 10 >> By MARJO HALLOWELL LIVING along the coastline it seems only natural to go for a swim and a paddle in the sea but on the Gove Peninsula it is necessary to ensure the safety of the swimmers against the omnipresent crocodiles. So when it comes to a surf ski or a board competition the lifesavers need to make sure the competitors remain safe against these hunters of the deep. It is not uncommon to see more lifesavers than competitors as they continue to survey the water for tell tale signs of any unwanted, four legged, large mouthed spectators.

Always on guard for these predators one of the life guards said that last year they had signs of a croc having been on the beach before the competition started but this year all appeared clear but they are always on the lookout as crocs could be lurking in the water. The annual ‘Round the Island Race’ and the surf Beach to Beach race for teenagers that set off from Shady Beach in Yirrkala had escorts for each competitor. This was the second year for the Round The Island Race and was an interclub event with surfskiers from the local Nhulunbuy club and the Mindle Beach Club in Darwin.

A clear leader from the outset was local Alan Cross who won for the second year in a row. After he regained his breathe he paddled back out to meet the other competitors such was his lead. Alan said he enjoyed the three and a half kilometre race although it was a lot shorter than ones he usually enters. He had just competed a 14km race in Darwin the previous week. “It is a great day out here and I think everyone is enjoying themselves,” he said. “The club is encouraging people to get into water sports and it was great to have a couple of competitors over

from the Mindle Club.” Glen Collins from Mindle came in second with Harry Parkinson close behind and Tony Snelling, Mindle, came in fourth. The Jetski and inflatable both travelled alongside the men as they paddled out of view behind the island. Cadets and Under 14s then competed in the Beach to Beach paddle on their boards. With five competitors in each event there were six lifesavers in surfskis, on the jetski and in the surf boat ensuring there were no unwanted visitors in the water. Jesse Chamberlan won the boys cadets, Maddy Barnett the girls with Alex Parfitt winning the Under 14

Rio Tinto puts Gove mine and refinery up for sale and New Zealand assets will transfer into a new business unit, to be called Pacific Aluminium, and be managed and reported separately from the Rio Tinto Alcan product group prior to divestment. These assets are: • Australia: Gove bauxite mine and alumina refinery, Boyne Smelters and the associated Gladstone Power Station, the Tomago smelter and the Bell Bay smelter • New Zealand: New Zealand Aluminium Smelters A second group of seven non-core assets will continue to be managed by Rio Tinto Alcan while it further investigates divestment options. These assets include: • France and Germany: Three Specialty Alumina plants and the Gardanne refinery • United States: Sebree smelter • United Kingdom: Lynemouth smelter and associated power station, for which potential options include closure Rio Tinto chief executive Tom Albanese said “The assets identified for divestment are sound businesses that are well-managed with productive workforces. But they are no longer aligned with our strategy and we believe they have a bright future under new ownership.” Continued on page 2

By COREY BOUSEN RIO TINTO has announced plans to sell its Gove bauxite mine and alumina refinery following a review of the company’s aluminium assets. The local mine and refinery are to be included in a reshuffling of Rio Tinto assets that will lead to the creation of a new entity to be called Pacific Aluminium, which will be sold off at a future date. Rio Tinto, in a statement, said it was streamlining its Aluminium product group, with 13 assets to be divested at “an appropriate point in the future”. The dramatic move follows Rio Tinto’s poorly timed purchase of Alcan in 2007 for US$39 billion, with the global financial crisis (GFC) hitting in 2008. The statement said the move will allow Rio Tinto Alcan to concentrate on its strategy to: “grow the value of its high quality, tier one assets and improve the product group’s financial performance”. Alcan Chief Executive Jacynthe Cote, in a media conference after the announcement, said the company was particularly focusing on its bauxite mining and alumina refining operations in Queensland. Under the plan, Rio Tinto’s interests in six Australian

Rio fined $160,000 Toy run a hit with for Gove fuel spill riders and kids RIO Tinto Alcan was fined $160,000 on December 8 in the Darwin Magistrates Court for a petrol spill last June. The company pleaded guilty to unintentionally causing serious environmental harm when it spilled 62,000 litres of unleaded petrol into the soil and groundwater at the Gove plant last year. Gove operations general manager, Julio Costa, said the company accepts responsibility and is now trying to stop further environmental damage and the site moved quickly to protect the local environment when the fuel leak was identified. “We immediately notified authorities and engaged environmental experts,” Mr Costa said. “Our goal is to ensure our operations have zero harm to the environment. We are sorry the leak occurred and have accepted responsibility for it. “All the projects we have in place and all the enablers we’ve put in place and consultants working with us have everything working until we are sure that all the contamination is removed from the area.” Mr Costa said lessons have been learnt from the spill. “There has been a lot of improvements not only in the standards but in the compliance and behaviours,” he said. “And when we have an instance like that, we investigate thoroughly and learn more and incorporate what we learned into the systems.” Mr Costa said Rio Tinto Alcan spent $3 million cleaning up and containing the spill to prevent it spreading to nearby Melville Bay. “The redemption plan is succeeding in containing the fuel leak on site and has resulted in low potential for impact

to the marine environment. To prevent future incidents we have implemented more rigorous inspection methods and improved recording and tracking systems,” he said. He said the refinery would continue to monitor soil and ground water adjacent to the light fuel tank farm and undertake further remediation as required. He had advised the community and in particular the Traditional Owners of the outcome of the hearing. In March this year the Environment Protection Authority found that sporadic and infrequent inspections of the Gove site led to the major fuel spill. At the time it was said some 75,000 litres of unleaded fuel leaked into the environment from the 1968 vintage oil tanks. In the EPA review they discussed a number of issues that required attention including the inspections and audits having been sporadic and infrequent audits at the Gove site generally occurred reactively rather than preventatively. It also stated the mining industry had become self-regulatory and self -reporting exposing the Territory to an increased risk of damage to the environment from neglect, poor process and poor decision-making. On June 10, 2010, the tank, containing unleaded fuel, was found to be empty. The level had last been checked on May 28. The tank, built in 1968 was last inspected in 1997 when an upgrade and repair was carried out. Another inspection due in 2007 did not occur and in 2009 it was determined the tank would be decommissioned once the fuel was sold and removed. RTA had intended to store the fuel until a buyer could be found as it had replaced unleaded fuel with an alternate energy source.

Santa with his helper, Emma Mitchell, and elf, Karina Morris, on their way around Gove. By MARJO HALLOWELL THE rumble of engines throughout town was not greeted with any trepidation but with sheer delight. It was an opportunity for all the bike enthusiasts around town to don their leathers and band together for their annual toy run. Some 40 riders escorted the man is the red suit - aka Santa - as he made a special appearance at the Gove District Hospital and cheered up patients and staff. They travelled through South and then spent some time in Endeavour Square where members of the public were able to vote for their favourite bike. Chris Putland was the winner. The riders then hopped back on their machines and headed to Yirrkala where they gave sweets to the children before heading back to the Gove Country Golf Club and then the Boat Club. They stopped for refreshments at each of their stops and picked up a card for a hand of poker with the one holding the best card at the end of the day the winner. They enjoyed a sausage sizzle put on for them at the boat club before heading back to the Hog Shed. They were out and about for about five hours and then took their bikes home and had time to have a break before returning to the Hog Shed for the evenings activities. Continues page 10 >>

CROSSWORD No. 81

SUDOKU No. 81

Your Lucky

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) Time spent helping out a friend at work may take up more of your energy than you expect. Your input will not go unnoticed, however. Romance. Don’t allow yourself to be ruled by your emotions. You need to make an important decision and must wait until you are more relaxed.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Once you have started a new project nobody will be able to stop you! Your momentum will help you to push through a barrier which has stopped other people in their tracks. Romance. Your partner may find it hard to cope with all your excess energy! A powerful aspect to Mars later in the week could make you a little tense: do your best to use your excess energy constructively.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A few negative comments this week may sap your confidence for a while. You need to take the remarks in context, however, and not overreact. Romance. A person whom you have known for some time may still be interested in you. They will do their best to pretend not to be interested, but their actions will give them away.

FOR KIDS

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Be careful that problems at work don’t spill over into your home-life. So long as you try hard to be patient, everything will be resolved. Romance. You may need a little extra emotional support from your partner at the moment. Communications between you will be especially strong, but be careful not to be too demanding.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Activities which don’t need much money will give you a chance to get back on your feet financially. Some recent extravagances have taken their toll. Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will give your love-life a push in the right direction. A romantic get-together this week will put your relationship onto much firmer ground after a recent misunderstanding.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 81

A surprise move later in the week may leave you wondering what is going on. Talk to a person whom you can trust – your other colleagues may not be so quick to tell you everything. Romance. A power-struggle between you and your partner will not help either of you. Do your best to settle a recent dispute in a way which satisfies both sides.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may find it difficult to tolerate people who don’t know what they are doing. You won’t appreciate having to clear up a mess caused by someone else. Romance. If you are able to relax properly this will be an excellent week for both of you. Be especially careful not to get into arguments, especially ones involving money. You won’t be in a mood for compromise at the moment!

A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) At times this week you will need to spend more time by yourself. You have a lot of work to get through and won’t be happy if you are constantly interrupted. Romance. A new relationship may pick up speed faster than you expect. Very soon you will have to make a decision about how quickly you want to get involved with this person.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A kind word will go a– long way. Your enthuFor all your printing needs www.lotsa.com.au siasm and energy will be appreciated by the people around you; however you must be sympathetic to people who are not so dynamic. Romance. A favourable aspect to Neptune this week will improve your powers of intuition, just when you most need them!

MUDDY RIVER

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Your ability to spot a financial opportunity will help to bring in some money just when you need it most. Make sure you don’t take any more risks than you have to, however. Romance. Time spent with someone whom you hardly know could prove interesting. This person may be much keener on you than you realised. Don’t expect any dramatic developments for the time being, however.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Beauty, without

expression, tires.

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

A favourable aspect to Jupiter will help to bring a little more luck into your life over the next few days. Don’t miss an opportunity just because a friend tries to put you off. Romance. Your self-confidence will be especially high at the moment. You may need to be the one who takes the initiative in a new relationship.

SOLUTIONS No. 81

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A favourable aspect to Jupiter will give you the confidence you need to sort out a long-standing problem. You need to deal head-on with an issue which you have been trying to avoid. Romance. Your partner will appreciate a few words of encouragement. ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A person who doesn’t seem to be taking your feelings seriously will make you quite angry. Do your best to see things from this person’s point of view, but at the same time, make sure that you don’t let them take advantage of your good nature. Romance. Your love-life will improve substantially over the next few days. A promise which you thought was unrealistic will finally be carried out.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Tension with your boss could lead to further problems if you are not careful. Do your best to stay calm, even if you feel that you are not being treated fairly. Romance. A person who has been admiring you for some time will suddenly pluck up enough courage to talk to you. This person is very shy, and will need a lot of encouragement.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) You will be very sensitive to the emotional states of the people around you at the moment. Don’t be pushed into doing something which you think is unethical just in order to please somebody. Romance. A few romantic evenings at home this week with your partner may help to heal a recent rift.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A disagreement which threatens to escalate into a major confrontation may be easier to settle than you realise. You will need to be completely honest with the other people concerned, however. Romance. A good aspect to Venus at the beginning of the week will help you to get your romantic life back on track.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) You will be in the mood for some changes and powerful aspect to Uranus will help you to come up with good ideas. You need to see your present situation from an entirely new angle. Romance. Your relationship will gradually strengthen over the course of this week, so long as you are patient. If you try to rush things you will lose more than you gain.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) You will need to sort out your objectives. An approach which is firm but fair may work best. Don’t let yourself be messed about by somebody who is much younger than you are. Romance. A decision which has been hanging over you for some time will have to be made soon. If you want to make contact with this person, now is the time to start.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A favourable aspect to Jupiter will make this a lucky week for you. A risky idea which has failed in the past might work this time. Don’t be afraid to stick your neck out. Romance. Your mind may be wandering a little at the moment. Be careful not to miss an important appointment towards the end of the week!

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Be careful not to be led on by promises this week which are unlikely to actually come to fruition. Romance. Don’t give up, just because you have had a small set-back. Your luck is about to turn and you need to take advantage of this while you still have the chance.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Don’t allow other people’s negativity to hold you back this week. You may be better off without their advice. Romance. You won’t feel you want to be bossed around by anyone at the moment! Your relationship will stay on track so long as your partner doesn’t try too hard to control you.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A recent dispute should be resolved when both parties are in the mood for a compromise. Don’t attempt anything for the moment, or you will be disappointed. Romance. You will be surprised how much difference a few days make to your love-life.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) A meeting later in the week will help to give your confidence a boost. You will be surprised when you find out how much faith other people have in your abilities! Romance. Don’t be too quick to dismiss a suggestion for improving your relationship. It may seem unrealistic at first, but if you give the matter some thought it could work.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A letter which comes completely out of the blue may shock you. You will need to take stock of the situation before you react. Don’t do anything without consulting your friends. Romance. This should be a very good week for romantic adventures. You will regret it if you do anything sneaky, however.

Katelyn to tee off in Alice

Catch of the week

A GOVE junior golfer is in Alice Springs this week competing in the Paul Pearson Cup. Nine-year-old Katelyn Rika was invited to attend just before Christmas so was busy fundraising over the few weeks before the clinic and competition. It was on from Monday and finishes tomorrow. The first two days were a clinic for the Junior golfers aged under 21 followed by two days of competition. Katelyn was excited about attending but made sure she had her lucky cap packed. She had attended the mid-year clinic and was the only one to go over from Gove. Playing for the last two years Katelyn enjoys the challenge of competition but also enjoys playing for leisure. her mother Esther said one of the biggest challenges for the junior golfers is paying for the airfares and accommodation when they wish to attend competitions and offered her artworks for a raffle which will help fund the trip. Results of her efforts will be published next week. Katelyn Rika is in Alice Springs at a junior golf workshop and competition this week

Youth invited on the trip of a lifetime APPLiCAtiONS are now open for Australian youth to join Young Endeavour (pictured) for 11-day voyages along the Queensland and New South Wales coasts during 2012. A voyage in Young Endeavour is a unique experience, and one which develops skills for life. the specially designed youth development programme increases self-awareness, develops teamwork and leadership skills, and builds a strong sense of community spirit. No sailing experience is required and all young Australians aged 16 to 23 can apply. Voyages will depart from townsville, Airlie Beach, Mackay, Gladstone, Brisbane, Newcastle and Sydney. Sydney local Natalie Grove, who sailed the ship along the Pacific Coast in August 2011, said: “Sailing Young Endeavour provided me with an opportunity to push my limits, expand my horizons and to learn to never underestimate myself or the people I am working with. It was definitely the experience of a lifetime. During each 11-day voyage youth crew work with a Royal Australian Navy staff crew to learn the skills to sail a squarerigged tall ship. Each participant has the opportunity to set the sails, take the helm, navigate using the ship’s charts, help the

cook in the galley, and climb to the top of the 30 metre mast. Once they have learned the skills to sail the ship, each youth crew takes command of Young Endeavour for 24 hours, setting a course along the Australian coast. Lucinda hirth, of Melbourne, sailed Cooktown Young Endeavour across the Bass Strait in November. On completing the voyage she said:

“It gave me the confidence and skills to achieve my personal goals and to contribute more in my local community when i return home. Youth crew are selected via an online ballot. Applications for the current ballot will be accepted until March 2. Local For more information on dates and fees, or to apply for voyages, visit www. youngendeavour.gov.au.
