NEWS FOR EAST ARNHEM LAND, INCLUDING NHULUNBUY AND YIRRKALA
He will continue to make glad the heart of childhood Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus Printed 114 years ago, a New York Sun editorial written in response to a little girl’s query about Santa Claus continues to capture the world’s imagination every Christmas. Dear Editor! I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun it’s so.” Please tell me the truth: Is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O’Hanlon. 115 West Ninety-Fifth Street. Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal life with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernatural beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

By MARJO HALLOWELL IT is time for my next adventure. I have really enjoyed working in the Top End but now it is time for me to have another adventure. When I came to Gove just two years ago I found it a very welcoming place to be and everyone has been extremely friendly. I am sad to be leaving but I am heading off to Europe for six months so I am also looking forward to what is ahead. After a short visit back to my family in Bargo, I plan to head off to the Mediterranean and Spain in about February or March. My original plan was to head off for six months straight as I celebrate my 60th birthday next year, however, my children have decided to make me an Oma (grandmother) in May, so I will come back to Bargo for that and then head off again later in the year. I have planned a photographic/art exhibition in early June (had to do something apart from idolising my first grandchild) and it will feature works from across East Arnhem Land. During my time in Gove I have made many new friends and I’m sure our paths will cross again. Before coming to Gove I worked in Scotland on a daily newspaper and it was while I was in the Orkney Islands marvelling at their history that I realised Australia’s history was much, much older. I jumped at the chance to come to East Arnhem Land and I have learned more about the history of our Indigenous people in two years than I had in the 60 years (well 58) previously. It was the ‘Remote’ that attracted my attention to the advertisement for the position with the Arafura Times, and I thought I was remote in the Scottish Highlands. I am putting together my many experiences from living here, in Bargo and in Scotland and comparing the many similarities and marvelling at the difference. Matt Garrick will be taking my place in January. After graduating from Canberra University in 2007, Matt has since been running around peddling his wares as a journalist in remote and regional corners of the country, including Albany and Kununurra in WA, and the Torres Strait and Cooktown over in Far North Queensland. He has published articles in subjects as varied as politics, business, sports, arts, Aboriginal issues and a story about a chicken being washed away in floods.

Gas for Gove deadline passes: No confirmation AS Nhulunbuy anxiously awaits news on the fate of their town and whether gas will come to Gove, the Chief Minister’s deadline for a decision passes. Terry Mills stated he was expecting a decision by last Wednesday and, as yet, this has not eventuated. Mr Mills said: “Negotiations are continuing on securing the future of the Gove alumina refinery. “Both parties representing the Northern Territory Government and Eni are treating this matter very seriously, are working hard and remain committed to obtaining a resolution as soon as possible.” Pacific Aluminium is continuing to work with the Northern Territory and Federal governments in relation to
gas supply and pipeline construction. Pacific Aluminium Chief Executive Officer Sandeep Biswas (right) says they are working with the Northern Territory Government on a number of issues, including gas supply, land access and environmental approvals. “Pacific Aluminium is working with the Federal Government in relation to mechanisms to assist in financing the pipeline, land access and environmental approvals,” he said. “We have received, and continue to receive, positive support from both the Northern Territory and Federal governments in relation to securing gas to Gove. “Pacific Aluminium is continuing to consult with other stakeholders,
including our employees, Traditional Owners, local businesses and other
members of the local community. “We recognise that the strategic review announced in October creates uncertainty and we appreciate the support from all stakeholders. “Baseline environmental monitoring along the proposed pipeline route has been completed. “The environmental monitoring will ensure Pacific Aluminium has a detailed understanding of any potential threatened species that would need to be considered to obtain necessary approvals.” Mr Baswas said that together, with the Northern Land Council, they have undertaken initial discussions with Traditional Owners along the pipeline route. Engineering work is continuing
to scope and plan how they would convert the refinery from heavy fuel oil to gas. Pacific Aluminium is also considering the option of increasing bauxite exports in parallel with continued operation of the refinery. This would have the benefit of improving their cash flow as they face challenging market conditions. Sufficient reserves exist to allow them to exercise this option until gas is available without detriment to the long-term viability of the refinery. The volume and timing of increased bauxite export are yet to be determined. Pacific Aluminium expects to complete the review in January, 2013, and make a decision at that time.
Traditional Owners have been managing crocs for generations By MARJO HALLOWELL A RESPECT for crocodiles is a major part of the Indegenous children’s education and is deeply entwined in their cultural practice says a Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation Ranger. “We all know going into or near the water is a very risky business whatever approach is adopted and including whether there is crocodile trapping or not,” said Bawaka community member Arian Pearson. For generations the Traditional Owners in East Arnhem Land (Yolngu) have been managing the crocodile populations around their communities. Recent suggestions that some of their risk management practices are irresponsible has caused much distress. Following the taking of a young boy recently and the suggestion that it was because the community have been feeding crocs has caused much distress to the boy’s family and
the community. As a form of crocodile management TO’s have been feeding dominant male crocodiles for generations. This form of management is about looking after one dominant individual and keeping other crocodiles out of the area. E x e c u t i v e O ff i c e r a t Dhimurru Steve Roeger said a number of communities adopt this practice. For example at Bawaka, ‘Nikie’ is a croc that the community have been feeding for 15 years without any attacks on the community. “This is not a restricted practice and there are many more communities who manage the risk of crocodile attack in this way,” Mr Roeger said. Arian Pearson is a community member from Bawaka and works as a Ranger with Dhimurru. He points out that Indigenous communities are experts having lived here for tens of thousands of years. “TO’s have been living with crocodiles for longer than
we can remember,” said Arian “The elders do whatever they can to minimise the risks to their communities. “They are extremely respectful of the crocodiles and, by keeping the dominant male close, they reduce the risks of other crocs coming into the area. “I am sure TO’s would be devastated at the implication that feeding the crocs had anything to do with the loss of a family member.” This management approach is about minimising the number of crocodiles in an area, leaving it to a dominant male to police the area keeping any would- be intruders away. In this way community members keep track of this crocodile and know there are unlikely to be other threatening crocodiles in the vicinity. Of course this doesn’t mean anyone is less vigilant. Unlike Darwin where croc trapping is conducted intensively. remote communities have to live much more

intimately with crocodiles. Regardless, even in areas where trapping is carried out, no one can guarantee the safety of anyone going into or near the water. “TO’s are the experts and it is the elders’ responsibility in the community to make sure people understand, are crocodile aware, and stay safe when it comes to living in close proximity with crocodiles,” said Arian. “It is everyone’s responsibility though to make sure we are crocodile-aware through continuous education.”
Mr Roeger points out that feeding the animals in a controlled way is different to people randomly leaving fish carcasses on the beach or near boat ramps. “This is not about attracting crocodiles into an area where they would not normally frequent and it is not about bringing crocodiles close to areas where there is high risk of an attack,” he said. “Leaving scraps and carcasses around a boat ramp is irresponsible wherever it is.” There are reputable accounts of crocodile attacks
occurring when a long-term resident crocodile has been removed. One example was reported in Kakadu at Cahill’s crossing on the East Alligator where a resident crocodile was shot during a vehicle-recovery exercise and a week later a person was taken by a crocodile that moved into replace the resident. Where there are crocodiles living next to communities the Traditional Owners will continue to do their best to minimise risk for the safety of their families.
Croc attacks teen while fishing Credit cards being skimmed in Gove A TEENAGER suffered leg wounds when bitten on the leg by the one metre long crocodile while hunting at a billabong. The 16-year-old boy was flown from Arnhem Land to Darwin for treatment late on Sunday. A CareFlight aircraft on a flight from Groote Elyandt was diverted to fly the boy from remote Ramingining. He was treated at the local health clinic which called for him to be flown to Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment. The Top End Medical Retrieval Service is operated by CareFlight on behalf of the Northern Territory
Government. The boy was flown by CareFlight to Darwin airport then transferred to the hospital by St John Ambulance. The boy remained in a stable condition. This is the third crocodile attack in just over a month. On November 17 a seven-year-old girl was taken at Gumarringbang outstation and on December 2 a nineyear-old boy was taken at Dhaniya (Cape Bradshaw). Rangers trapped one crocodile and shot three at Dhaniya since the attack but the boy has not been located. They called off the surveillance last Friday.
NHULUNBUY is not exempt from credit card fraud. A recent call from a bank alerted a credit card holder to a transaction on her account for over $4700 and an attempted transaction for $4800, both in Italy. When the original caller asked for the person’s birthdate she responded that he had called her and wanted some verification from him that he was legitimate. He then advised she call the customer service number as listed on her statement which she did and found out about the two transactions. A stop was placed on the account and a she was told a new card would arrive in three to four business days. The card in question was only used in East Arnhem for local transactions and not used for any internet transactions. The inconvenience of waiting for replacement cards has been felt by many in Gove who have had similar experiences with one Facebook user stating it happened

to her three times - first in December last year and then also in January and February. Each time she had to wait for a replacement card and went without her card ‘for weeks on end’. “Two were from somewhere in town. My bank weren’t allowed to tell me where,” she wrote. When the Nhulunbuy police were notified about the transactions in Italy they said they could do nothing as it was overseas.

7.3 Indonesian tremor felt in Gove: By some! GOVE residents were woken by an earth tremor last Tuesday morning which was felt as far away as Adelaide. The tremor which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale originated in the Banda Sea, off the coast of Indonesia, at 2.25am. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning centre issued a bulletin minutes later advising the tremor, at 182km underground, did not pose a tsunami risk as it was too deep. There were no initial reports of damage to areas around the site in Indonesia. One resident said she woke up in the middle of the night and it felt like the bed was moving but was not really awake enough to realise what was happening. Billie Thompson: “So I wasn’t dreaming; I felt it for a while too . . .” Ian Maclean: “Several people reported at this mornings engineering meeting, that they were awoken by the tremor, with “waves” of the tremor being felt in their beds as they were awoken. I missed it, again !!!” Tony Burge: “have missed all the others but the earth certainly moved for me on this occasion.”

Guardians, as well as representatives from the Australian, Northern Territory and local governments, Pacific Aluminium, Miwatj Health, NT Police, Gumatj Association, Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation, the Northern Land Council and Anglicare. “Together, we share a strong interest in minimising volatile substance abuse in the East Arnhem region,” Snr Sgt Muldoon said. “Restricting the availability of inhalants is a key strategy in tackling this issue and keeping our children and young people safe. “Some local communities have successfully introduced a practice of
draining or removing fuel stores and other volatile substances before shutting down over the festive season.” Community leaders report that this has dramatically reduced inhalant abuse over the holiday period. The Interagency Group is therefore asking organisations to consider introducing and implementing a fuel drainage and inhalant removal policy in time for the 2012 shutdown period. “We would also suggest that you recommend that staff and contractors do the same at home. Many people might have already considered doing so, given
that fuel can degrade quite quickly in this climate,” he said. At a minimum, all aromatic fuels and glues should be securely locked away in a responsible manner, as is required under community management plans and the Northern Territory Volatile Substance Abuse Prevention Act 2006. MANY Territory families can expect to know how their Year 12 graduates fared academically before Christmas this year. The Northern Territory Board of Studies (NTBOS) acting chair Ms Sharon Duong said the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) Year 12 results information package will be mailed and electronically delivered to students and their families. The NTCET results are expected to be released on Wednesday, December 19, but this date will not be confirmed until results processing is completed by the NTBOS in conjunction with the SACE Board of South Australia (SACE Board). After the results are released an NTCET Results and Enquiry Service hotline (1800 009 282) will
be available during business hours until January 11, for students who have any queries about their results. “Students and parents can also speak to their school to get more information on their child’s achievements. This allows for discussions about a student’s post schooling options,” Ms Duong said. The top 20 individual results for students will be made public to celebrate outstanding achievements by those students - as per the NTBOS Results Release Policy at http:// www.education.nt.gov.au/parentscommunity/curriculum-ntbos/ntbos. These students consent to their results being publically released. Awards ceremonies for these students will be held in Alice Springs and Darwin in early 2013. “Successful completion of
Year 12 is a great milestone for all students, and celebrating their successes as a community is a wonderful recognition of their hard work and dedication,” Ms Duong said. Meanwhile as in past years, students who have completed nationally accredited Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications, will receive their certificates and/or statements of attainments early in the New Year. The NTBOS is working with the SACE Board towards the public release of further NTCET data. This work will continue during 2013. Each year NTBOS and SACE Board work together to ensure the provision and release of accurate and timely NTCET data to students and their schools.

Famous Gumatj artist passes suddenly By WILL STUBBS A FAMOUS artist of the Gumatj clan of North East Arnhem Land passed away at Birritjimi suddenly last week. She was a daughter of Munggurrawuy. Her siblings include Australians of the Year, Galarrwuy and Mandawuy and two of her sisters have won National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Prizes. Her mother from the Marrakulu clan was Bunay Wanambi, who was a cow herd for the mission at Yirrkala. As a child she went to the Yirrkala Mission School, taught by Mr Ron Croxford. With the school she traveled to Darwin with Yirrkala netball team recalling also her athletic talent as a high jumper. At the Yirrkala Clinic/hospital (now from where BukuLarrnggay Mulka operates) She trained and worked as a nurse for many years till its closure in 1975. Her closest sister is Nyapanyapa with whom she has worked as a print artist through Buku-Larrnggay since 1996. Her output of bark paintings increased in 2007. The rise in prominence of Nyapanyapa’s bark painting and subsequent successes in 2008 was catalyst in developing her own painting style that is now in all major state galleries and many important private collections. Since 2008 she chose to paint almost daily at the art centre, the same place she worked as a nurse in the 60’s and 70’s. Those that saw her father paint acknowledge her similar feel. Her commitment to working at Buku-Larrnggay premises continued from 2008 through to her death. She worked almost every day usually in the courtyard with her sister. One of the idiosyncrasies of this artist is that in the period which she has being making major art on bark and poles in this theme she has reinvented herself each calendar year. Her first year saw bold yellow and red verticals. These works were only shown at Yirrkala during Garma in 2009 and were heavily acquired by Institutions. In 2010 her show at Raft in Alice Springs saw a horizontal cross current. In 2011 the works which went to the Alcaston Gallery show went dark. It’s as if the fire has passed leaving ash, charcoal and embers. Will Stubbs, of Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre, said: “Yirrkala and the art centre has had a very sad 2012 which was made so much harder last Thursday (December 6) with the sudden passing of a masterful artist and matriarch of the Gumatj clan.” “She was to the very last day the beating heart of the art centre. A part of our family here as well as through Yolngu kinship. “She painted every day in the courtyard with her sister Nyapanyapa. Her fiery spirit and warm crackling laugh gave us all a daily pulse of life. Her raw muscular art was
widely appreciated and only days before her death she was celebrated on the front cover of The Australian newspaper’s weekend Review magazine. The documentation for the exhibition at Alcaston Gallery in Melbourne in April 2012 read; “The Memory of Fire. The Gumatj clan sacred design which she paints is gurtha or fire. But not just any fire. This is a Fire of supernatural intensity. So powerful that it transforms the land it touched for all time. its identity is etched into every atom of Gumatj land it spread, or was carried, to. Or more accurately the identity of the land holds the memory of The Fire (capitalised like ‘The Flood’ of the Bible). The Victorian fires help us understand the message carried in this ancient pattern. This design is sacred because it reveals a hidden secret. After all the trees have grown back and the living witnesses have died there will be no outward sign of such a cataclysm. But long after that the land still remembers; it’s DNA permanently altered. The incomprehensible power of that fire is burnt into the land forever though all else is healed. It is important to remember. Fire is also domesticity and the hearth, light, warmth, cooked food, security. The flaming tongues are a language of creativity and truth and the sparks are offspring and generative. But this design keeps alight the memory of that unimaginable fire to dwarf all other fires. This revelation of ancestral knowledge is brought to Victorians who have a capacity to understand what is being shared. The indelible, transcendental Memory of Fire.”

TERRITORIANSare being warned not to let the fun and relaxation of the festive season translate in to potential food poisoning at Christmas parties or family get-togethers as the NT marked 2012 Australian Food Safety Awareness Week. “Australian Food Safety Awareness Week is the perfect time to brush up on safe food handling, just before the festive season kicks off,” Environmental Health Officer Tracy Ward said. “The last thing a host wants is to see their guests or family members winding up in hospital with a severe bout of food poisoning from something as simple as the salad being cut on the same chopping board used to prepare meat for the barbecue.” “Bacteria can easily transfer from one food to another by reusing knives, chopping boards or containers without washing them thoroughly. “As a result, foods can end up riddled with bugs that can cause dangerous food poisoning without looking, smelling or tasting ‘off’.” “Another one to remember is not overloading your fridge. Meat, dairy and seafood need prime position to maintain safe temperatures so it can be a good idea to relegate the beer, wine and soft drinks to the esky,” Ms Ward said. “By following a few simple tips for storing,

I’ve attended in our community. The Women’s Christmas Gift Exchange at the town hall last Friday was not only a brilliant concept but a wonderful celebration of the sisterhood. Wendy Troe as guest speaker earned her standing ovation for her wonderful commentary - funny and sad - about family gatherings at Christmas. I’m looking forward to my own family Christmas gathering in Nhulunbuy followed by a break in January. Wherever you might be spending the festive season, best wishes for a safe and peaceful Christmas and let’s hope it’s a happy and prosperous New Year for Nhulunbuy in 2013.
before you go on to the next item. Cutting boards • Always use a clean cutting board. • If possible, use one cutting board for fresh produce and a separate one for raw meat, poultry, and seafood. • Once cutting boards become excessively worn or develop hardto-clean grooves, you should replace them. Marinating food • Always marinate food in the refrigerator, not on the counter. • Sauce that is used to marinate raw meat, poultry, or seafood should not be used on cooked foods, unless it is boiled just before using.
Fruits and vegetables: • Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables in running tap water to remove visible dirt and grime. • Remove and discard the outermost leaves of a head of lettuce or cabbage. • Because bacteria can grow well on the cut surface of fruit or vegetables, be careful not to contaminate these foods while slicing them up on the cutting board, and avoid leaving cut produce at room temperature for many hours. Serving food • Always use a clean plate. • Never place cooked food back on the same plate or cutting board that previously held raw food.

Hope for a happy and prosperous New Year WITH 2013 just around the corner, the best Christmas present our community could hope to receive is a positive announcement from Rio Tinto in the New Year to provide much-needed certainty about the future of the Gove operations, the town and the wider region. I think the Australian and Territory governments are doing absolutely everything they can do to secure a gas supply. In a statement from the Chief Minister last week, Terry Mills said: “Negotiations are continuing on securing the future of the Gove alumina refinery. Hector the Cat visits schools to promote the road-safety message HECTOR the Cat was in Nhulunbuy recently and visited local schools promoting road safety to students and teachers. The Department of Transport road safety officers were in town to present Hector the Road Safety Cat shows, primary school booster lessons, a senior school workshop Choices
and Safer Roads and professional development sessions for teachers. Hector the Road Safety Cat visited more than 860 children. In five road safety performances, he demonstrated the importance of: • Crossing the road safely - Stop, Look, Listen and Think. • Wearing a seatbelt - all the time.
•Protect your brain and wear a helmet - check for cracks, check for bugs, make it fit and make it click. Nhulunbuy Primary School and Nhulunbuy Christian School participated in the Safer Roads booster lessons, delivered to more than 24 classes by road safety officers Justin Murphy and Aimee Tagell.
The Safer Roads professional development sessions were held at both schools to assist teachers wanting to incorporate road safety messages into their lessons . Nhulunbuy High School’s Year 10 students participated in the Choices workshop. It engages students by using clickers, activities, statistics,
role playing and personal stories, to educate learner and provisional drivers on key factors in crashes, and issues affecting young road users. The workshop involved local police, the fire service, St John Ambulance and the Northern Territory Early Intervention Pilot Program (NTEIPP).

WORKING BEE STIMULATES THE SENSES
Busy at the working bee.
BRIGHT and early for the last two Saturday mornings, some very enthusiastic volunteer parents and children from Nhulunbuy Primary School joined Gayle Chamberlain and Ms McCaul for a working bee to help lay the foundations for a sensory garden The day started with Kim Wilkinson delivering a boat so generously donated by The Gove Boat Club for the children to play in. Matt Watson helped spread the sand around the boat to stabilise it. Many loads of soil and mulch were shoveled and carried by our strong parents and their children. The children enjoyed their rides in the wheelbarrows and garden trolley Thank you to YBE for your generous donation of soil and mulch. Thumbs up to Deb Osborne for her kind donation of mulch when we ran out.
Brad Smith drilled the holes in the boat and organised the donation of the boat from The Boat Club and Kim Wilkinson who delivered it. The children love it. Although it is still a work in progress the sensory garden is based on: • Taste - to pick a little leaf and put it on your tongue not quite sure what to expect. • Touch - children love it when they can touch things in the garden and are actually invited to do so. • Visual - one of the easiest of the five senses as colourful displays easily catch the eye of a child, but think of some innovative ideas that lead them down the garden path in excitement. • Audible - sounds make children stop in their tracks to check out the source, slow them down to pay attention to it.
• You can include plants that make sounds and indeed garden accessories you can truly make it a sound adventure garden • Scent - along a path and brushing upon aromatic plants that tickle your nose is fun as well as lots of wonderfully smelly flowers with sweet aromas Special thanks were extended by the Transitional classes to the families, Emma and Ryan and Jeffrey, Ellen and Amber Barrow, Leon and Indigo Staude, Cassie and William McIllree, Sam and Talei Stevens, Katie and Caleb Clarke, Evan, Henry, Ingrid and Alfie Thompson, Joe Benn, James Green, Stephanie, Brodie and Miya Holmes, Mr Chamberlain, Kellie Betteley, Leeann Kesteven, Beverley Hulme, Matt Watson who so generously gave up their time to help out with our garden. We greatly appreciate it.

Hospitality is tops at the High School HOSPITALITY students were able to showcase their skills at a dinner they hosted at Nhulunbuy High School in November. The night was a huge success with the students showing off their fine dining skills as they ran the front of house with the kitchen operations students preparing the spectacular food. The tables were set up outside under the trees by candle light making it a wonderful atmosphere. The guests were entertained by Incense the teacher’s band consisting of Karen Hill, Jenny Heath, Sue Clark and Olivia Hartwig. It is hoped this event can be held again next year . The students then finished off the year by hosting a buffet
on the November 28 where students showed off their presentation skills and this was not hampered by the power outage. VET manager Marlene Organ said the hospitality students have done an enormous job in 2012. “They have catered for a number of events, make themselves available to do front of house for community events and held major functions of their own at the high school,” she said. “The students also run a café each Wednesday which is enjoyed by senior students and teachers, this has proven to achieve great outcomes for the students. “We are looking forward to a productive 2013.”

Hunting a rare plant speciments in Kakadu
Native water hyacinth
SCIENTISTS from CSIRO have been hard at work in Kakadu, collecting rare plant specimens where they are searching for the elusive native water hyacinth Kakadu is one of only two places in Australia where this native plant is known to grow, and finding it has taken a bit of leg work! The CSIRO researchers need samples of the plant as part of a project to control an invasive weed - the exotic water hyacinth, Eichornia crassipes.
It’s an ornamental plant from overseas that’s taken hold in eastern Australia, particularly in the Richmond Tweed area. It has just been recognised as a Weed of National Significance and takes over waterways and it’s very hard to shift, so scientists are investigating biocontrol options. CSIRO has found a bug that eats the exotic water hyacinth, but. before they can release it in Australia, they need to be sure that it doesn’t target similar native species (no one wants another biocontrol case like
the cane toad!). That’s where Kakadu comes in - the native water hyacinth from Kakadu will be tested to make sure it’s safe from the appetites of the new bug. CSIRO got a permit to collect the plant specimens at Kakadu, and ranger Buck Salau expertly guided them to Benbunga Swamp, where he knew the plant could be seen. They found around 5000 of the plants, so the 38 seedlings they collected haven’t made a dent in the population.

Merlin to reboot its diamond operations MERLIN Diamonds has obtained $17 million in funding to reboot operations at its Merlin diamond mine, proactiveinvestors.com.au reports. The Merlin diamond mine, about 80km south of Borroloola, is one of only three diamond mines in Australia and has an unusually high proportion of gem-quality diamonds, higher than that found at Australia’s largest diamond mine, Argyle. The mine now hosts the second-largest diamond Resource and Reserve in Australia. Merlin Diamonds are known for their brilliant white colour and large size. The largest diamond ever found in Australia, a 104.73 carat white gem quality stone, was recovered from Merlin and was valued at about US$525,000 in 2002. Merlin hosts Indicated and Inferred Resources of 19 million tonnes at 0.24 carats per tonne for a total of 4.31 million carats, and a Probable Ore Reserve of 11.1 million tonnes at 0.26 carats per tonne for a total of 2.89 million carats. A reassessment of rough diamond prices in 2011 indicated that Merlin run-of-mine production would achieve in excess of US$330 per carat. Merlin Diamonds is targeting a 1.5 million tonne per annum - about 300,000 carats per year - diamond mining and processing operation, with first production slated for the March quarter of 2013.

Western Desert Resources takes over iron-ore lease WESTERN Desert Resources is securing complete control over the Tianda iron ore lease in the Northern Territory under a sales and purchase agreement with Tianda Resources, proactiveminers.com.au report. The lease is one of two tenements that make up the Mountain Creek Project. The agreement recognises that Western Desert has earned a 70% interest in Tianda through a spend of $850,000 and is acquiring the remaining 30%. The lease has been the subject of preliminary ground investigations only. First pass reconnaissance drilling earlier this year comprising 81 shallow reverse circulation holes was completed on three prospect areas. Assays from this drilling have confirmed the presence of shallow oolitic hematite mineralisation up to 60.95% iron. A detailed airborne gravity survey flown last year over the tenement area also identified numerous areas as potential iron ore prospects. Western Desert plans to carry out in 2013 a major drilling program to establish the extent and tenure of the hematite mineralisation at the Mountain Creek Project area.

Final triathlon sets the pace THE final triathlon for the year was held last weekend. There were a few changes on the morning of the event as one of the Gove Aquatic Centre members Jaydyn Hansen had sad news throughout the week. Unfortunately, he lost his little brother Jackson Thaiki Rosevear Kruabkham on Thursday, December 6. The ride was changed from the normal route up along Mathew Flinders to a quick detour up and around the hospital carpark (during the bike leg) in honour of baby Jackson. Jackson’s dad was there to cheer the riders on while his beautiful wife rested. Some of the riders reported they choked up with emotion when they rode through the hospital carpark. Many athletes also commented on how awesome our town is in a time of hardship, showing so much support and love for their fellow Govites. The race continued to be fierce with competitors hoping to take out the final race for 2012. The winners of Event 1: 600m swim/20k bike/5k run Men: 1 Leon Staude, 2 Neil Holland, 3 Equal Nic Munnings and Jaydyn Hansen Women: 1 Trudy Guiney, 2 Julie Boyd, 3 Georgie Foley. The winners of Event 2: 300m swim/10k bike/2.5k run Men: 1 Ricky Butler, 2 Geoff Bridgefoot, 3 Ged Davis Women: 1 Lara Poupard, 2 Sam Sparke, 3 Kim Meigan Look out for 2013’s race calendar that will be released in February.

Looking for the new crop of IMP marathon runners THE Indigenous Marathon Project is on the look-out for the next crop of marathon runners to tackle the 2013 New York Marathon. Rob de Castella’s IMP is looking for outstanding young Indigenous male or female athletes, aged between 18 and 30 who have the natural running ability and strong sense of determination to take on the training required to run a marathon. They will also be required to changing Indigenous Australia and promoting the importance of health and well being in remote communities. No formal running experience is required, just the right attitude and a commitment to achieving your personal best. The Indigenous Marathon Project started in 2010 when de Castella took four young men from remote Australia to New York for the world famous marathon. The Project has since expanded with seven men and four women tackling the gruelling 42.195km race in 2011, and a team of six men and two women currently preparing for the Tokyo Marathon, after Hurricane Sandy forced the cancellation of the 2012 New York Marathon. de Castella said that while the main aim of the Project was to get the athletes across the finish line of the New York Marathon initially, running a marathon would show the athletes that they can achieve anything
that they put their minds to. “To see the looks of complete joy and self-belief on the faces of our athletes when they achieve what they once thought impossible is amazing, and for them to realize that they can in fact achieve anything they put their minds to is what the Project is all about,” he said. “Being part of IMP and running a marathon will open many doors and present many opportunities that will change the lives of not only the athletes themselves, but of their families, friends and communities back home, and everyone here at IMP is excited to find and meet our next group of runners.” The 2013 team will follow in the footsteps of IMP members before them and remain in their communities while training for the marathon, and will undertake a Certificate IV in health and leisure, that will help with employment opportunities in their chosen fields. If you think you, or someone you know, has what it takes to run, sweat and inspire and be part of a once in a lifetime opportunity, visit the IMP website and fill out an application form. To apply to be a part of IMP in 2013, please visit the IMP website at www.imp. org.au. For more information, contact Laura Oldfield (02 6260 570 or 0438 523
