Thieves target safes in raids on businesses By GARY HUTCHISON COOKTOWN Hardware has become the most recent victim in a spate of break and enter offences to hit three businesses - two of which involved the theft of safes. Another break and enter, which

was committed on a Hope Street residence, is not believed to be related to the businesses which have been targeted. Manager Rick Butler said the Howard Street store was closed at 5.30pm on Monday, December 19, and he was advised of the offence by

“Head office is still calculating how much was in the safe,” he said. Investigating police officers from Cooktown station declared the business a crime scene, with trading halted until a forensic unit from Cairns could conduct its examination of the premises. Cooktown Hardware’s incident is the second to involve the removal of a safe. The first was committed on the office of Rainforest Real Estate somewhere between 5.30pm on Thursday, December 8 and 8.45am on Friday, December 9. Licensee Karen Olsen said entry to her Charlotte Street office was gained after the back door was jemmied. “They made a real mess of the back

a neighbour at about 6am on the next morning. “I came in and found the chain to the lock on the side gate had been cut,” Mr Butler said. “They cut the weakest link, because they would never have cut through that padlock. “And then I saw the back roller door had been jemmied up enough for them to crawl under, only to find they’d kicked the office door in and taken the safe out through the front door. “What’s worse is, they used bolt cutters from our stock to cut the chain on the front door.” Mr Butler said the 76kg safe contained an undisclosed amount of money, the proceeds of Monday’s takings, along with the daily float.

She is offering a reward for information leading to the recovery of her property and/or the conviction of the person(s) responsible. Ms Olsen said the sentimental value of the jewellery far outweighed its monetary worth. “There were family heirlooms and other items of great personal value to me in the safe,” Ms Olsen said. “And the loss of the documents that were in it (the safe) is just a real nuisance. “I want them all back.” Continues page 3 >>

Program does an excellent job but their funding and scope of work are a long way short of what is required, and the Fire Management Project run by Cape York Sustainable Futures is also inadequately resourced. It must be depressing for the dedicated and professional staff in these agencies to be faced with such a massive task with such meagre resources. Cook Shire Council, as the

JUST thought you should know that we have spent nine wonderful days in North Queensland and one terrible one in Cooktown. We drove north to see the famous hill - no information was posted anywhere that it would be closed! When we arrived we asked if there was any chance we could get to the top, we were told by a fag-smoking and can-drinking young man, ‘NO’! No more and no less than that - ‘NO’. He seemed to think it was funny that we had travelled half-way round the world and when we got there the last 20 feet were blocked. Apparently, according to a local resident, it had been like that for six weeks. You don’t seem to think that tourists as they come up the two routes to your town should be told this to save then the journey? But never mind. I will now tell the world via Trip Advisor and my blog that Cooktown is not worth the visit - then you won’t have to. PS - the dock (Wharf) was fun too! Those fishing lines strung across make it a real game of chance - shall we trip into the smelly bait strewn around or not? Only good point the lady in the James Cook Museum opened up half-hour early for us - as there was nothing else to do in the town. Gill Wilton UK

We whinge more often than not about the Cook Shire Council, but in this case I have nothing but praise for the workers and those on the council with the vision for the transformation that has taken place over the past few years on Grassy Hill. I HAve obtained all the data relating to locals opinions on the subject of free (or otherwise) camping. There were 97 respondents divided up into business owner/ managers, employees, volunteers, and ‘others’. I kept the questionaire intentionally simple to ensure a reasonable return rate, and its purpose is mainly to gauge a groundswell of public opinion. The issue of how, where, and to what extent free/reduced fee camping is introduced is a little more complex than the straight yes/no responses dictated by the questionaire. This was reflected in respondents expansion of the issues in the comments column. So the results you see below are to be taken as a guide to general community feelings. They must also be weighted by reference to the many comments that people added. The ratios of those for all year free camping are pretty well similar for the first three demographics

camping policy is adopted. My personal opinion is that we need quick action on a camping policy to ensure that we snare a decent share of the expected 100,000 odd extra visitors who will arrive to FNQ to view the solar eclipse November 14, 2012. I will make freely available the detailed data for anyone wishing to examine it. This may be viewed at the James Cook Museum, bearing in mind we are running restricted hours over the holiday period. Opening hours are on Post Office and IGA notice boards. Any respondent who prefers to have their name omitted from such public view should give me a call on 0419 673 221. and (predictably) heavily weighted towards unrestricted camping by the ‘other” demographic which is basically the retired, and people on some kind of government income assistance. There are seven of the 97 surveyed who are totally against free camping, so there is a clear majority who want either free or discounted camping facilities for tourists and/ or themselves, in the case of locals wanting to ensure continuity of free camping in places like Archer Point or the Annan. The by far most common comments received were to the effect that we must not turn away any kind of tourist, that we need their money, and not create ill will. There were also some good constructive comments on ways and means and alternatives. Interestingly those Accommodation/van Park operators who responded are not all totally against the concept but do expect some kind of compensation if a free/discounted

jemmied and damaged,” he said. “But despite them rummaging through drawers and cupboards in the office, nothing was stolen.” However, officers consider the break and enter of a Hope Street dwelling on Saturday, December 10 to be an unrelated incident. “In that case, the home owner came home to a dark house only to find a youth with a torch inside,” Senr Sgt McArthur said. “That offender decamped from the scene and hasn’t been since. “At the time it was reported, our officers were attending a traffic accident which

prevented them from attending the dwelling immediately.” Senr Sgt McArthur said the home owner described the sole offender as an Indigenous youth, 16-17 years-of-age, about 170-175cm in height with short cropped hair. “At the time, he is believed to have been wearing a T-shirt and board shorts, but because it was so dark, we don’t have a good description of the clothing,” he said. Anyone with information that can assist police with their inquiries is asked to either call Cooktown station on 4069 5688 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Yiri loses battle for life DYLAN Harrigan and Sonnette Ozies, the young parents of baby Yiri Harrigan, have been forced to make the worst decision that parents should ever have to make - the removal of life support facilities for their little warrior. Doctors removed the tubes keeping Yiri alive at about noon yesterday, Wednesday, December 21, but at the time of writing it was unknown how long he would survive without artificial assistance. “It could be a few minutes, a couple of hours or a day or two, but he will be in our arms when he passes,” Dylan said. For the young couple, it has been a tragic turnaround in Yiri’s fortunes, because it was only a couple of weeks ago that cardiac surgeons told them they could bring the little bloke home for Christmas and New Year. Born with hypo-plastic left heart syndrome, he had at that stage successfully recovered from the second heart operation he had undergone in the first three months of his life. “Yiri amazed the doctors after his first surgery and he did it again with the second and we were just so looking forward to bringing him back to Cooktown for Christmas to be with family,” Dylan said. But last week he suffered an unexpected stroke which left him with severe brain damage. “It’s the most severe stroke a child can suffer,” he said. Dylan posted the information on Facebook for the benefit of his family and friends who had been

following Yiri’s progress, but he inadvertently wrote it as though Yiri had already passed. In an interview with the Cooktown Local News on Monday night, the physically and emotionally drained young dad still found time to apologise for the error. “As you can imagine, Sonnette and I haven’t been thinking straight and I’m sorry to have misled everyone,” he said. “I’m all cried-out, I don’t have any tears left.” Dyland said their son had changed their lives forever. “He has made us appreciate the smaller things in life,” he said. “We were so lucky to have him a part of our lives even if it was for such a short time, he was such a little person but made a huge impact on everyone who have met him or knew of him. “He won the fight for his heart but he lost the battle for his life due to the severity of his brain damage.” Dylan said he wanted to thank everyone who had given them support and declared that the balance of funds left from community donations to Yiri’s medical bills will be put to use in the establishment of the “Yiri Harrigan Foundation”. “We want to raise funds to help people right across Australia with cardiac issues,” he said. While funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed, Dylan said they hoped to lay Yiri to rest in a graveside ceremony at the Cooktown Cemetry on Friday, December 30 at about 10am.

Hope Vale land handover goes ahead but not without a hitch A LAND handover in Hope Vale last week has been embroiled with controversy as in-fighting between factions intensified. One group led by Hope Vale Shire Council Mayor, Greg McLean, attempted to stop the handover of 110,000 hectares of freehold title land to the Hope Vale Congress Aboriginal Corporation by seeking a court injuction. Mr McLean along with Hope Vale councillors June Pearson and Neville Bowen Jnr and council employee Russell Gibson attempted to take out an injunction to stop the transfer of land on Wednesday, December 14, one day before the handover ceremony. That court action followed a previous failed attempt by the same three councilors in May this year. Mayor McLean told the Cooktown Local News that Council had been asked by Traditional Owners (TOs),

unhappy about the whole process, to take up their fight. “The court action was not about the money, it was about protecting our rights, our infrastructure and our services,” he said. “The TOs are upset about decision making on their behalf and the decision making process of their future by the Hope Vale Congress.” He said that while the attempt at getting an injunction failed, they were successful in getting a judicial review of the whole process, which will take place in February 2012. “Fortunately, this will be a test case for our communities against the domination and intimidation by the state government and regional Cape York organisations,” he said. The land transferred excludes the town area, but includes the Cape Flattery Silica Mine. The Hope Vale Shire Council will continue to conduct its local government functions. Natural Resources Minister Rachel Nolan said handing over the Hope Vale Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) formally recognised Indigenous ownership of the land under the state’s tenure system. The deed was presented by Member for Cook, Jason O’Brien to Hope Vale Congress Aboriginal Corporation Registered Native Title Body Corporate at a ceremony conducted “on country”. The congress represents 12 of the Traditional Owner clans and is supported by the Walmbaar and Dhubbi Warra corporations. The congress will also receive an ex-gratia payment of $6.5 million in compensation for the mining royalties collected by the government from the site. Balkanu Chief Executive Officer, Gerhardt Pearson, said up to 125 block-holders in Hope Vale will now have the tenure security for which they have been waiting almost 30 years. “The transfer means the congress will hold the land in Aboriginal ownership and have the authority to grant leases to families, and third parties - businesses, joint ventures, sporting cubs etc - which will provide the long awaited security of tenure many business operators were promised by Katter in 1984 and successive governments

Hope Vale Congress Chairman Brian Cobus said decisions concerning the Trust will be made by Traditional Owners in concert with the community. Yarrabah and Mapoon in particular are watching closely and will now seek to follow in the footsteps of Hope Vale. “This leadership delivers very complex tenure resolution and opportunities for economic independence and home ownership, and a balance between land use, environmental conservation, and long term protection of cultural heritage.”

Fatal four to be targeted

Parole suspended for breaches

THE people of Cooktown can expect to see a larger police presence over the festive season. Cooktown’s Officer in Charge, Senior Sergeant John McArthur, said the police would be targeting the “Fatal Four” areas of driver safety across the holiday period. “Over the years, police have identified excessive speed, driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, driving whilst fatigued and not wearing seat belts as the main causes of deaths and serious injuries on Queensland roads,” he said. “While we will be focusing most of our attention on those things, we’ll also be on the lookout for other traffic infringements too. We’ll be doing our best to ensure an injury-free festive season, but ultimately it’s up to the individuals to ensure that.”

RECENT police action has seen two 19-year-old Cooktown men have their parole periods suspended. They will be held in custody until the Parole Board meets to determine their respective fates after separate non-related breaches of their parole conditions. A warrant was executed on the first after he had been charged with going armed so as to cause fear, while a warrant was executed on the second after he had been charged with allegedly breaching a domestic violence protection

order. On November 20, a 39-yearold Cooktown man was charged with being in possession of 90 grams of cannabis after it was allegedly found during a search of the vehicle he was driving. And on December 15, a search warrant executed on the home of a 40-year-old Cooktown man resulted in him being charged after police found a quantity of cannabis seeds and an amount of testosterone allegedly in his possession.

By GARY HUTCHISON THE Queensland Police Citizens Youth Welfare Association took over the management of the Cooktown Events Centre on Monday, December 19, with Sergeant Howard Pratt appointed as the Cooktown PCYC Manager. Sgt Pratt will be based full-time at the Centre. Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said Council was really happy to be working with PCYC. “They are a great, long-standing organisation and I am confident that Howard will fit right in with Cooktown and the Cook Shire community,” he said. Mayor Scott said thanks had to go to all staff members involved in the caretaker management phase of the Centre, the Cooktown State School P-12 for their patience and support during the past six months and the community as a whole. “The community has shown outstanding support for events and activities already held at the Events Centre and I think the future looks bright as PCYC now take the reins,” he said. A police officer with 10 years service, Sgt Pratt said he had previously served in the Cross Cultural Liaison Unit in Cairns, along with having been a school-based police officer in Cairns and Gordonvale. “I’m really excited about my appointment here in Cooktown and I’m hoping the service the

Nominations for Australia Day awards open NOMINATIONS for the 2012 Cook Shire Australia Day Awards are being called, with residents to be advised that they close on Friday, January 6. The categories for nomination include, Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Cultural Award “The Arts”, Volunteer of the Year, Community Event Award, Community Service Club Award and the Service to Cook Shire Award. First introduced in 1991, the award has been bestowed upon men and women from all over Cook Shire in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the community. The first Citizen of the Year was the late Vera Scarth-Johnson. Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said everyone knows someone who would be eligible for at least one of the categories. “Nomination for one of these awards would give

public recognition for that person or group’s efforts, so why not express your appreciation by nominating someone you know who has made a real contribution for an Australia Day award,” Mayor Scott said. Australia Day celebrations will kick-off on Thursday, January 26 2012 in Lions Park, Cooktown with a barbecue breakfast provided by the Endeavour Lions Club. An official ceremony and awards presentations will start at 10am. “Bring the family along to celebrate Australia Day and some great Australians,” Mayor Scott said. Nomination forms are available from Council’s administration building, Shire libraries and the Cooktown IGA, or on request by emailing vkirk@ cook.qld.gov.au Residents are reminded that nominations close on Friday, January 6 2012.

Capers Chef Chris Davies with a breakfast ready to serve under the watchful eyes of Assistand Chef Igor Havrylyshyn and Proprietor Justin Coventry on Saturday morning. HEAVY overnight and early morning rain failed to put a dampener on Saturday’s grand opening of Justin and ‘Tash Coventry’s new coffee shop, “Capers”. So why would a tour operator and a medical superintendent venture into the coffee culture? “That’s simple,” grinned Justin, “she (‘Tash) loves coffee,” he said. “I grew up in coffee shops - good coffee, good conversation and atmosphere - and I thought if I was going to stay in Cooktown, I needed somewhere to go for a good coffee, and here we are,” said ‘Tash. And their new venue, built on a vacant lot opposite the parks in

Charlotte Street, offers a distinct point of difference to other local coffee shops and cafes. “We’re offering a healthier menu,” Justin said. “Wraps, rolls and fresh salads something more wholesome - getting away from the deep-fried stuff.” But ‘Tash had to admit their menu did stray slightly from the straightand-narrow. “We’ve also got the yummy stuff like cakes that go so well with a coffee,” she said. “And there’s some decadent stuff in the milk shakes and desserts too.” Capers’ weekly menu offers wraps, rolls and salads, but on Saturday, speciality and a la carte breakfasts are also available. Coffee devotees have the options of one, two, three or four shots in locally made crockery, with the fourshot model served in what can only be described as a small soup bowl. “You’ve got to really love your coffee to go for the four-shot, it’s 600ml of coffee in a coffee bowl,” she corrected. And there were lots of shots served up on Saturday morning, with their state-of-the-art coffee machine measuring more than 200 shots before 11am. Asked whether he was nervous about the weather crippling their opening, Justin said the “vibes” in town during the week were too good for him to be concerned about rain. “All week I had people confirming

that we opening,” he said. “And we’ve been pretty well packed out since we started this morning.” He said considerable thought had gone into the interior design, which featured high ceilings and fans, furnishings and wall paper that give a cool feeling to the place. “The big open front with the concertina doors lets the breezes in, but if they’re (the breezes) not working, we can close the front door as much as we like and turn on the air conditioning,” he said. “We’ve done our best to think of our patrons’ comfort wherever possible.” Those wanting more of an outdoor feel are also catered for, with tables and chairs on the verandah, and umbrellas, tables and chairs in the courtyard at the side of the building. And what of the opinions of some of Capers’ first customers? “Great, just great, especially the muffins,” said Ian Boneham, while Jacynta Jones gave the ‘thumbs-up’ and said, “Five star all the way!” Not only does the new business offer much for coffee lovers, it has also provided employment opportunities, with three full time staff and a pool of casuals engaged in the enterprise. Capers is open between 7am and 3pm from Monday to Friday, and 7am to 1pm on Saturday. For further information call 4069 5737.

Merry Christmas from all of us at News Cooktown Local

Best wishes to all

ON behalf of the Cooktown Local News publishers the Bousen family - Corey, Mark and Meg - and myself and the team in Port Douglas, I would like to extend our sincerest best wishes to our readership for a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I would also like to extend a huge thank you to our regular columnists: Bev Shay and the team at the History Centre, Di Keller and the Cooktown Writers Group, Sandy Lloyd, Mike D’Arcy, Jeanette Covacevich and the Cooktown Bush Walkers, our View contributor (no, it’s not who you think it is), Russell Bowman, the Hash House Harriers, Kelly Barnett, Eric George, Janne Stewart, Anne Williams Amanda Hogbin and our Pulpit contributors - Sister Irene, Pastors Peter and Wayne and Jean Haack - for your tireless efforts. You give the CLN its local “feel” and a level of local “ownership”, and I know from receiving regular reader feedback that you each have your own following. And there are of course are our community organisations, politicians, bureaucrats and fellow journalists who have helped present our stories, whether they’ve had a positive or a negative origin. Thank you also. The CLN will be closed from today, December 22 until Friday, January 6 when preparations will be made to present our first edition for 2012, which will be out on Thursday, January 12. Please continue to forward your emails, photos and story ideas during the period in which we are closed. Once again - all the best. Gary Hutchison Editor

Carols still in tune despite rain forcing change to venue COOKTOWN’S new Events Centre came to the rescue of the annual Carols by Candlelight event on Sunday, when inclement weather forced a last-minute change of venue on organisers. Cooktown Baptist Church Pastor Peter Coates said it was the first time in his 11 years in town that rain had forced the event indoors, while for Cooktown Community Church Pastor Wayne Brennan it was the fourth time in his 16 years of residence here. “We’re very fortunate to have a venue the quality of the Events Centre to come to,” Pastor Peter said. The event, usually held in the Lions and Bicentennial Parks, is preceded by a free barbecue cooked by Endeavour Lions Club members and the tradition was continued - but under the Events Centre awnings instead of under the stars. The Baptist Church’s advertisement in the Cooktown Local News forewarned the venue change, but other efforts were made to advise residents after the

decision was made at about 4.20pm. As well as telephone calls being made, an announcement was also posted on the social networking site, Facebook. “We made the decision to change when it looked like rain, but then it cleared up and we thought we’d made a mistake,” Pastor Wayne said. “But then it belted down, so we had made the right call.” While numbers were down on past years, the popular clergymen were happy with the roll-up. “Considering the weather, we’re really pleased with the number who braved the rain to come along,” Pastor Wayne said. Wise men distributed gifts for the children and a choir consisting of locals who joined the Combined Churches Choir sang carols, before the Hope Vale Choir made their appearance as part of the entertainment, while suitably-costumed children performed a nativity scene to complete the evening’s theme.

Merry Christmas from all of us at News Cooktown Local

“Carols by Candlelight” By ANON “Away in a manger” And “Oh Holy Night” It’s good to sing carols By soft candle light. The gifts are all wrapped, I’m thankful that’s done Remembered relations (And hope I’ve missed none). “Joy to the world”, now, “And Christians awake”, There’ll be time tomorrow Those mince pies to bake. I’ve ordered the turkey Now what’s this we sing? “Come let us adore Him” And “Worship the King”. Adore Him and worship! Oh! Dear Lord I see I’ve been just so busy Adorning the tree. And planning and cleaning And shopping each day. I’ve hardly had time left To worship and pray. Somewhere mid the wrappings And tinsel and mirth. I’d lost, Lord your reason For coming to earth. You came as a baby To die as a man, Redeeming my soul, Fulfilling God’s plan. Forgive me and cleanse me Oh! Now I can sing With love and thanksgiving My Lord and my King. At last a gift with which we can be happy

Christ Jesus Born a baby boy

HAVE you ever received a gift with which you were dissatisfied? As a child I was given a train set for Christmas. I envisaged (in my boyish dreams) one of those flash ones with signals, (fully electric of course), tunnels, stations, the works. I unwrapped it to find to my disappointment, an inferior wind-up model (which my parents could afford) and I had to “make do” with that. That first Christmas, Jesus Christ entered this world as a gift to mankind. The Bible says, “God ‘became flesh and dwelled among us’ (John 1:14), so that we might be reconciled to God again. Jesus was the gift that has never disappointed those who accepted him. The gift of Jesus totally satisfies. When we accept him by faith, he forgives us and sets about giving us direction, hope, and purpose in life. As his follower too, he makes material provision for our needs. Yes, the perfect gift still exists - Jesus. The Psalmist in the Bible wrote “Taste (try Jesus) and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” Ps 34:8. Have you tried Jesus? Jesus told a woman who went to a well for water that anyone who came to him would be satisfied and never “thirst” again. Have you ever had a hunger or thirst for something but don’t know what? Try Jesus. By the way, remember there are three things we can do with a gift. Neglect it (Hebrews 2:3), reject it outright, or gratefully receive it. Where are you at with the gift of Jesus? This Christmas we again join the shepherds, angels and wise men in rejoicing over the birth of Jesus and making him “the reason for the season”. Remember, “wise men still seek Jesus”. Pastor Peter Cooktown Baptist Church

JOHN 3:16-18a (CEV) 16 God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. 17 God did not send his son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them. 18 No one who has faith in God’s son will be condemned. This passage sums up the heart of the Gospel. In it we see Almighty God, the Creator, who looked forward in time and saw that we would have the need of a saviour. He set in place a plan. He would send Jesus, God the son, who would be born as a human being and live on this earth and that he would ultimately be sacrificed on the Cross of Calvery. Due to this event, mankind would have access to a proper relationship with him again through acceptance of Christ Jesus as Saviour and Lord of our lives. Jesus Christ was born in to this world as any baby is born. He had to be nurtured and cared for, protected and trained, like any child. He then grew to become the most influential person who ever walked this Earth. He was wholly man, he had emotions, and he bled when he was wounded like any man. And yet, he was wholly God. He loves you. When he hung on the cross for mankind, he could have called on a ‘biggest mob’ of angels to take him down if he wanted to. He didn’t. It was his love for you that caused him to stay there and complete the plans and purposes of his life. He has plans and purposes for you. They involve and are initiated by accepting him as Saviour and Lord. You see, you are created in the image of God for the purpose of relationship with him. From all the folks at Cooktown Community Church, have an awesome Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Pastor Wayne Brennan Senior pastor Cooktown Community Church

COMMUNITY

Controversy over eligibility for voting in first Council elections THE last rerun for the year comes from 2003 and is an extract from the Cooktown Herald and Palmer River Advertiser of June 7, 1876 recounting the First Municipal Council Elections held in Cooktown. “On Monday the day of polling were to be seen gentlemen in active canvas throughout the town, and various were the conjectures as to the probable result of the poll. Much dissatisfaction was expressed by various electors that their votes were refused by the returning-officer, Mr St George, because their qualification registered on the Electoral Roll was not deemed by him to be sufficient to meet the requirements of the Act. Many were consequently disfranchised who really had the required qualifications, but who had neglected at the proper time to see that this was properly set forth in the Electoral Roll, therefore there can be no blame attached to any but themselves. Due publicity was given of the Roll being exhibited for the purpose of allowing all an opportunity of ascertaining whether or not their names and qualifications were thus properly set forth, and the electors having failed to avail themselves of this opportunity, are necessarily aggrieved, and rumors

of threatened proceedings to test the validity of the election, were the topic of general conversation after the poll was declared, but we premise people will not be so eager to part with their money in what must ultimately prove so fruitless an experiment, for we venture to predict that by no legal process can the result of the election be disturbed. We recommend anyone with any brains to consult the Municipal Act, and if he does not agree in our opinion, then what brains he has are unquestionably in the wrong place. But what is the ground of complaint? We candidly confess that we were somewhat surprised at the result of the poll There were those nominated whose presence in the Council would have been a distinguishing element of strength, and whose rejection we regard with feelings of regret; but we accept in all good grace the verdict of the electors, and consider that in the composition of the Council there is afforded to each portion of the town a fair and equal representation. We take Messrs Bell, Rutherford, and Severin to be the representatives of the north end, Messrs Davison, J Walsh, and C Walsh the centre or middle portion, and Messrs Gilbert, Hodel, and Pickering the southern end of the town. What can be fairer than this? There is no preponderance of one part over the other, but each is alike equally represented and reasonably suppose that each will receive its fair share of attention in the way of improvements. We heartily

congratulate the people of Cooktown on the very orderly and becoming manner in which both elections have been conducted: it speaks volumes for the wisdom and intelligence of the community. The official declaration of the Poll took place at 12 o’clock noon Tuesday. There were very few persons present in addition to the candidates, the successful ones, of course being in the ascendant. The numbers polled by each candidate were read over by the returning officer, and the successful candidates declared duly elected as the first aldermen of the Municipality of Cooktown. Mr Severin, as the highest on the list, proposed a vote of thanks to the returning officer to the impartial way in which the election had been conducted. Mr Davison seconded the resolution, and in doing

CROSSWORD No. 79

SUDOKU No. 79

Your  Lucky

Your Lucky

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

Time spent helping out a friend at work may take up more of your energy than you expect. Your input will not go unnoticed, however. Romance. Don’t allow yourself to be ruled by your emotions. You need to make an important decision and must wait until you are more relaxed.

This will be a good time for gambling, provided you know when to stop. Everything is in place for a very successful week, financially speaking. Romance. Romance is due to come up string this week and your relationship will improve considerably as soon as you can sort out a recent disagreement.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

Once you have started a new project nobody will be able to stop you! Your momentum will help you to push through a barrier which has stopped other people in their tracks. Romance. Your partner may find it hard to cope with all your excess energy! A powerful aspect to Mars later in the week could make you a little tense: do your best to use your excess energy constructively.

Don’t become too anxious to find out what has been happening behind your back. It is not something too important or damaging and simply wait until the time is right. Romance. With a very strong aspect to Mars this week you will not have too much trouble in exploring your horizons when it comes to romance. Don’t wait for anything to come to you, however.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

A few negative comments this week may sap your confidence for a while. You need to take the remarks in context, however, and not overreact. Romance. A person whom you have known for some time may still be interested in you. They will do their best to pretend not to be interested, but their actions will give them away.

Your work-life will be a hive of activity this week. Everybody will be coming to you and your diary will quickly fill up. Just be careful to not take on too much. Romance. This will not really be the best time for a romantic get-together. The positive energy brought to you in your professional live will be draining and you may find it difficult to relax properly when it comes to your personal life.

FINDWORD No. 79

Be careful that problems at work don’t spill over into your home-life. So long as you try hard to be patient, everything will be resolved. Romance. You may need a little extra emotional support from your partner at the moment. Communications between you will be especially strong, but be careful not to be too demanding.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Don’t be pushed off course by well-meaning advice. This person wants to help you, but they may not understand the situation quite as well as they think. Romance. So long as your partner is feeling as romantic as you are, everything will go very well this week. Don’t get impatient, however.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Activities which don’t need much money will give you a chance to get back on your feet financially. Some recent extravagances have taken their toll. Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will give your love-life a push in the right direction. A romantic get-together this week will put your relationship onto much firmer ground after a recent misunderstanding.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) This week will be a good time to begin or step-up you home renovations. You will feel creative and you should take advantage of this. Romance. Your home and personal life will take top billing this week. Make sure to spoil your partner in return for all the good things they have been doing recently.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) A surprise move later in the week may leave you wondering what is going on. Talk to a person whom you can trust – your other colleagues may not be so quick to tell you everything. Romance. A power-struggle between you and your partner will not help either of you. Do your best to settle a recent dispute in a way which satisfies both sides.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) You always feel that jobs should be done properly but ease off a little this week and don’t be too much of a perfectionist. You may have to compromise a little in order to get things done. Romance. You may be feeling a little bit unloved. Communication is the key so find the right time to let your partner know that you would like more support.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You may find it difficult to tolerate people who don’t know what they are doing. You won’t appreciate having to clear up a mess caused by someone else. Romance. If you are able to relax properly this will be an excellent week for both of you. Be especially careful not to get into arguments, especially ones involving money. You won’t be in a mood for compromise at the moment!

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

You will be surprised how easily you can motivate the people around you. Your energy will be very contagious! Romance. If you are not completely open you will find it harder to be close to your partner in the future. A powerful aspect to Mercury later in the week will help to improve communications between you.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

At times this week you will need to spend more time by yourself. You have a lot of work to get through and won’t be happy if you are constantly interrupted. Romance. A new relationship may pick up speed faster than you expect. Very soon you will have to make a decision about how quickly you want to get involved with this person.

Some changes will be coming into your life. Apart from one change, these will be important improvements. Take the rough with the smooth and everything should go according to plan. Romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will help you to attract the right person. Be careful that you don’t rush in too quickly, however, or you will put them off just as fast!

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A kind word will go a– long way. Your enthuFor all your printing needs www.lotsa.com.au siasm and energy will be appreciated by the people around you; however you must be sympathetic to people who are not so dynamic. Romance. A favourable aspect to Neptune this week will improve your powers of intuition, just when you most need them!

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Your ability to spot a financial opportunity will help to bring in some money just when you need it most. Make sure you don’t take any more risks than you have to, however. Romance. Time spent with someone whom you hardly know could prove interesting. This person may be much keener on you than you realised. Don’t expect any dramatic developments for the time being, however.

Your self-confidence will be especially high at the moment. You may need to be the one who takes the initiative in a new relationship.

SOLUTIONS No. 79

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A favourable aspect to Jupiter will give you the confidence you need to sort out a long-standing problem. You need to deal head-on with an issue which you have been trying to avoid. Romance. Your partner will appreciate a few words of encouragement. You might not realise how much they value your support.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) You will have a lot of energy, and will finally be able to get on top of things. Try not to start any new projects for the time being, however. Romance. Your partner will appreciate your confident mood. They will not be the only one who notices. By the end of the week you may have more choice than you can handle!

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) An event which happened recently may have had more effect on you than you realise. It might be better to sort out your feelings about the matter once and for all. Romance. A new romance may start to liven up a bit. You will still need to be very patient, however. This person may still have emotional ties to somebody else.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

A difficult aspect to Saturn will make it hard for you to deal constructively with an issue which has been affecting your life recently. Put it to one side and deal with it later in the week. Romance. Your good mood will be appreciated by your partner. A trip away from home would do you both a world of good. Hold back on this until later in the week if you can.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A discussion with colleagues at work will help you to understand their feelings about an issue which affects you very personally. You may find less agreement than you expect! Romance. Your ability to understand what your partner is thinking will help to bring you closer together this week.

Plum is juicy in more ways than one WELCOME plant lovers. This week I would like to talk about the Damson Plum or Passion Sovereignwood, Terfor Plants minalia sericocarpa. Hope Vale people may know it as Puice Plum. Terminalis - a reference to the leaves being clustered at the ends of branches, Sericuis - clothed in hairs, - carpus - fruit. This largish spreading tree with layered branches is synonymous with Terminalia microcarpa, which is a species previously considered to only occur in New Guinea. The oval leaves are spirally terminal on the branches in the wet season, and deciduous briefly in the dry season, turning

a glorious red before falling. The creamy perfumed flowers are borne on spikes in the axils of the leaves. The egg-shaped red/purple/blue downy fruits appear now, between November and May and are 1.4-2cm. They are edible to us humans and a favourite of many birds, Speckled Flying Foxes and Cuscus. The larvae of the oak-blue butterfly pupate in the curled leaves of the Damson, and green ants tend these like farmers. You can of course get your own back on these biting green ants - you can suck the citrus from their abdomens. A great treatment for colds and flu traditionally. The timber can be used for internal construction, window frames and “turnery” and was used in the flooring for the Hope Vale Church. The wood may also

be useful as fuel. Damson occurs in coastal areas of northern and western Australia, mainly found along watercourses, in foothills, on lowlands and alluvial plains. Propagated from fresh seed, the are fast-growing and require well-drained soils and ample water. They are great as a shade tree. There is a specimen tree in your Botanic Gardens and I have seen it growing naturally near the Annan River up Shiptons Flat Road, amongst other places. It is a beautiful large tree and a very special one. Remember this is your column too. Email me on sandylloyd@activ8.net.au or phone Sandy on 4060 3102 during the evenings.

Highlights for the year on the Track EVERYONE else seems to do it, so why not celebrate 2011 with the highlights of “Along the Track” for the past year? Apologies to anyone or place outside the “Track”, which I am very nostalgically treating as the road between Cape Trib and Cooktown. From south going north, but in no particular order, these include the wildlife, notably the many cassowaries and crocs which are easily seen right along the Track. The sightings for protracted periods of up to five cassowary families around the Daintree Coast region has been an absolute highlight for locals and travellers. Then there has been Emmagen Creek with its running water, upstream views, floral diversity and swimming holes - all packed into one small area and are rightly popular at any time of the day. Let’s not forget the view from Donavon’s across to the Range and back towards Emmagen, which is quite spectacular and instructive in understanding the weather of the area, while a bit further along the Track is Stingray Bay, which is also wonderful - especially at low tide. Woobadda Creek is another top swimming spot, with its fascinating birdlife - Metallic Starlings, Kingfishers, Pigeons, Doves and the occasional cassowary. One of the year’s “highlights” was actually the one-and-only lowlight - the damage to the Bloomfield River ford crossing in February. Not only was it physically disastrous, it also separated the Wujal Wujal communities who live on both sides of the river and damaged businesses and tourism between Cape Trib and Cooktown. The response from local and state governments was strong and prompt enough to be seen as a highlight. The passenger ferry from the Department of Communities and then Cairns Council extending the hours of operation was much appreciated and made a difficult time more bearable. (No assistance, however, from the Commonwealth for businesses affected, was a downer!).Two resident crocs, Spartaca (three

metres) and Brutus (five metres) have given many travellers a great natural experience, when they chose to grace us with their presence, which was pretty often. Another highlight has beenThe Wujal Wujal Falls which always flow with force, beauty and mysticism. How could anyone live in or visit the region and not take the time to visit them, especially with a Walker family guided tour? The waterfall itself, the changing lighting, the scenic backing and the cultural significance are all there - just great! The track up to the Wujal Falls has now become a sealed and widened road and is a joy to drive along and will encourage more travellers along the Track and into the area. Again, part of a good local planning. The opening of the wonderful new Arts centre at Wujal in January was another. After a slow start it was a major coup for the area and the Wujal community. The excellent quality of the works, the emerging artists and the quality of the building should be a springboard for the future of the community. While it is a significant business and employment driver, it is sometimes difficult to understand government priorities when unemployment in the community seems to be above 90 per cent. Much more needs to be done. Continuing with the highlights, there was Archer Point, a majestic and world class panorama. The feeling is different at low or high tide, and both are wonderful. Contrasting colours, soldier crabs, flotsam and seeds spread out along the high tide marks and the mangroves and coconut palms themselves all give lots of dimension to the spot. Spotting whales, rays or turtles from the Lighthouse, then driving or walking back to unfolding views, strolling along the beach or dipping your toes in the water, (being careful of course) show many facets of this special place. Keating’s Lagoon, on the southern outskirts of Cooktown, good anytime, is at its very best for about eight months, especially through and after the wet, with reeds, grasses, Magpie Geese,

Whistling and other Ducks, water lilies, a bird hide and lots of walks. And there are crocs as well when the water is up. Grassy Hill Lookout at Cooktown has had its first full year of operation. The views are just sensational and rank with any around the world, combining the Coral Sea and reefs with mountain and town views through a 360 degree panorama. The James Cook Museum is an enormous attraction, especially to anyone with an interest in the history and traditions of the past. It is a good insight into early contact between the Traditional Owners and the Europeans. The sections on Cook, Indigenous perspectives, early gold rush days and the major impact of Chinese gold-seekers and settlers are most commented upon by tourists. The three-in-one Nature’s PowerHouse Museum, Botanic Gardens and Vera-Scarfe Johnstone Gallery are refreshing on a hot day, tasty when the fruits are maturing, thoroughly educational and very, very loved. The gradual upgrading of the Gardens is by itself well worth re-visiting from time to time if you get the chance. That’s the twelve. Please enjoy the Christmas season, be relatively sober and tidy, and have a great 2012. Remember, Christmas is a time for very high tides (up to three metres) and the Crossing is okay to cross at around 2.3 metres on the tide chart, but that’s assuming there has been no big rains. This makes the beaches absolutely sensational at lower tides, and the Bloomfield River Crossing impassable for a few hours each day on a predictable, but variable pattern. So time your Bloomfield River Crossing with the help of a tide chart and talk to locals before trekking along the Track. Finally, be extra mindful of big rains. Happy travelling and happy Christmas.

Cooktown Bush Walkers taking a rest on their Mungumby Falls walk last weekend. Photo: JUDE EDWARDS

THE Cooktown Bush Walkers’ group had a very merry and enjoyable Christmas party and walk this past weekend. Everyone met at Waratah’s place on Saturday afternoon and took in the delights of her garden before a great meal and plenty of good company that evening. There were plenty of laughs as folk opened their presents and stole those of others in our Irish Christmas. After a leisurely breakfast, we were led by Waratah to yet another postcard-photo waterfall. Before reaching the waterfalls though, we were guided into the lonely grave of a child bitten by a snake in the late 1800s. Coincidentally, a snake was lying on the path at the exact spot we turned into the grave. Hidden Falls and the adjoining Helenvale Falls were a real treat to find “in our Christmas stockings”. As we walked back to Waratah’s place we followed the very picturesque creek full of orchids, lilies, fantastic fungus, amazing root structures and the walls of a very labour-intensive old mine race. Thanks to Waratah for her hospitality. We have had another year of fantastic walks in this very beautiful part of the world. The date and location of our next walk are yet to be determined.

Hash Good weather outlook for Boxing Day sings for Cooktown AS the year draws to an end, Cooktown Hash celebrated with its traditional town run around our various hostelries. It was hosted, as always, by Thermo and F*&t. They bring years of managerial skill and flair to the enterprise, and can be counted on to organise something special. We started by trailing down the hill to the RSL, where we shared a glass of good cheer and made the occupants suffer with a song. That was fine, and everyone was ready for a stroll uptown, but there was a courtesy bus waiting outside. That whisked us out of town, picking up Stumbles on the way, and on to the Hans Looser Lookout at Dump Hill. This is an ideal spot to view some of Cooktown’s ugliest power lines, and the trees that have grown up to obscure the view. Never mind, we drank some magnificent punch, sang a song for the wallabies, and headed back into town. We had appointments with the hospitality of the Top Pub and the Westy. After so much generous treatment, we all needed a rest and took packets of excellent chips from Cooktown Cafe into the park. They filled our tummies and set us up for more visiting. We took in the Sovereign and the Bowls Club, before jumping another bus up to Grassy Hill. There was more punch waiting, and time for another song over the grand view of Cooktown’s lights. (Did you hear us?) Back at the bash, GM Thermo was not displaying much Christmas spirit as she got stuck into various Hashers for being too lazy to sign the book, and poor Soggy for wearing a hat in the circle. It was a Father Christmas hat, so she might have expected a little mercy. Grandad was punished as a matter of principle, and Fakawe was congratulated on reaching a grand total of 300 runs. Next week’s run is on Boxing Day, at Muff and Tuff’s place. It will be gentle and sedate, a fitting end to Christmas, so turn up at 5.30pm and join the fun. Call Moses on 4069 5854 or 0409 686 032 for details. On-on! Lye Bak

Johnno from the Lure Shop with a tasty Spanish Mackerel.

THE weather is looking promising for a good day’s fishing on Boxing Day so have your boats ready, check your safety gear and flares, recharge your batteries and have fresh fuel. Remember the Coast Guard would like a quite Christmas weekend as well. This last week produced some solid Mangrove Jacks from the Wharf, and there are still some big fishing to be had by cruising the river, with a couple of anglers hooking some unstoppable fish. Most of the bait has disappeared from the Endeavour with the hot weather, so it is back to chasing some elusive mullet. The Stone Wall at Marton has produced some solid Grunter and Mangrove Jacks, mainly on prawn baits, while a couple of people witnessed an oversize Barra cruising Adam, the Lure Shop’s Coca Cola sales representative, with a cracker of a Cod caught on a recent trip with the team.

Cooktown District Community Centre held its inaugural Junior Golf Day at the Cooktown Golf Links on Thursday, December 8, with great success. The weather may have been a bit on the warm side, but that didn’t stop the kids from coming down and having a hit. Some excellent Golf lessons were given by Chris Hatton with kids picking up the skills of putting, and chipping quite quickly before they were let loose to tackle the beautiful 9 hole course. Lots of great shots were made throughout the day but there was none better than Gundolbii Michael’s chip in on the sixth, with the ball circling the cup before dropping in. Cooktown District Community Centre would like to take this opportunity thank CooktownArt Golf Links, The Redto Peppers Group Kelly Barnett and Chris Hatton for putting on an excellent clinic and providing some great prizes. A special thankyou also goes out to Gungarde for the use of the Gungarde bus.

Potato salad makes for a good golfing husband KERRY “Blue” Hobbs finished with a nett score of 58 to retain his spot on top of the Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke Competition and win the the week’s event from a field of only five. Well done Blue! Thanks to all the members who struggled through the rain and played in the Club’s Closing Day 2-Person Ambrose competition on Saturday, December 17. It was a fun day with a bit of a twist where players had to take the worst tee shot instead of the best. The team winners for the day were Graham Burton and Mick Mason with a combined nett score of 63.5, while hot on their heels in runner-up position were the Butler brothers, Rick and Steve with a combined nett of 63.75. Wayne Brennan landed the nearest the pin for 2/11 and John Pettersen landed 14. A special thanks goes to Julie Sauer who made the most delicious pavlova for everyone - simply yummy Jules! Thanks also goes out to Chris Hatton who, although didn’t play, made a scrumptious pasta salad and provided meat as well. And to Steve Butler thanks for your delightful potato salad, you’ll make someone a good husband one day! The rain managed to stay away for the Cooktown Hardware Sunday 9-Hole Stableford competition with six members taking advantage of the weather to come out for a hit. The ladies had great games and Alice Burton took out the honours for first place with 21 points and Julie Sauer was runner-up with 20 points.

Well done ladies! Six members have so far competed in The Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford competition and Rick Cowe is leading the competition so far with 37 points. Julie Sauer is currently the runner-up with 35 points. For the remainder of the year and the first few weeks in January, the weekly competition will be run from Saturday to Friday. Phil and Chris will be changing the pin positions on Saturday mornings when they mow the greens. The format for the weekly competitions will remain the same, wherein the competition alternates from a Stroke to a Stableford, and for two weeks in a row you will play off either the red or white tees. Upcoming competitions: Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford Competition - December 18-23 - red tees; Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke Competition - December 24-30 - white tees; Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford Competition - December 31-January 6 - white tees; Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke Competition - January 7-13 - red tees; Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford Competition - January 14-20 - red tees; and Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke Competition - January 21-27 - white tees. Happy golfing everyone Kelly Barnett Manager - Cooktown Golf Club.
