Women’s shelter to be relocated to Cooktown HOPE Vale’s Jiiry Women’s Shelter is expected to relocate to Cooktown by August this year, providing a place of safety and support for women from the broader Cooktown district amid concerns for the residents’ well-being. As part of the relocation process, the region will conduct an open funding round (tender process) which is expected to open in the coming weeks. When the funding round opens, the Funding Information Paper and Funding Application Form will be available on the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services website, as well as on the Community Door website and the State Government Funding Portal. The Funding Application Paper will highlight the service that need to be provided, the amount of funds, and the expectations that the service provider will need to meet. Member for Cook David Kempton said the Jiiry Women’s Shelter has seen a very low number of women and children using the service. “The feedback has been that women aren’t comfortable accessing the service as it’s situated too closely to where the violence is happening within their community,” Mr Kempton said. “Because of this, community consultations have been held to find out how we can keep offering the best possible service to the women and children of the Hope Vale community.” Mr Kempton said it was recognised there should be a transition to a regional-based facility, where women from other surrounding communities, such as Wujal Wujal, Bloomfield, Ayton and Cooktown, would also be able to access this support. “Through the community consultation process, it was established the service should be relocated to Cooktown as it is more central, and women and children accessing the service from other communities are more likely to feel safer,” he said. “The Department of Communities has been engaged with the current service provider throughout the consultation process. Charlie Martin, who with his late wife Virginia, used to provide emergency accommodation at their own expense on their Oakey Creek property for people in need, said he hoped due consideration will be given to the special needs of those who will use the facility when it is established. “I hope the government’s preference won’t be to have them penned up in a box in town some place,” Mr Martin said. “What some people don’t realise is that a shelter primarily used for Indigenous people needs to be ‘out of trouble area’ where they are safe, yet can still connect with the bush.” He said it was a shame his former home, which was recently sold, was not still available for the purpose. “There is the creek to collect the mussels,
a barra or perch to catch, or just generally walking the bush,” he said. “That place had already proven itself as a place for ‘healing’ in comfort.”

Past administrator calls for Council apology AS a past Administrator of the Cook Shire, I claim to have some appreciation of procedures and the many good things done by our local authority. I also try to refrain from interfering in Council affairs. On this occasion, I have reluctantly advised the Mayor, Councillors and CEO that I regard the debacle over kerbside rubbish collection in the Poison Creek/Endeavour Valley Road area as inappropriate and an example of poor governance. Lack of consultation, poor publicity and an apparent willingness of Councillors and staff to ride roughshod over pubic protest have

justifiably angered most of the people so affected. It is submitted that written explanations and public meeting replies contain misinformation and proof of bureaucratic bungling. Meeting procedures are questionable and administration issues are unsatisfactory. In my case, having to make a 4km return journey from homestead to roadside every second week, to put out and retrieve a half-empty wheelie bin is just a confounded nuisance and unnecessary expense. This compares to dropping off a bag of domestic refuse every few
AS the Australian Labor Party’s Candidate for Leichhardt, I condemned the Newman LNP Government following an announcement that 27.5 full-time equivalent positions will be scrapped from the Cape York Hospital and Health Service. This is a huge blow for the people of Cape York and I feel for the workers who were now forced to find another job. It sickens me to learn of further job cuts to our local health services. You cannot place a dollar amount on the health and wellbeing of people. Access to adequate health services is a basic human right. We shouldn’t have to travel to Brisbane or another centre to get treatment. We deserve to have doctors, nurses and specialists in our local community. The 27 Cape York job cuts are in addition to 234 positions being slashed in Cairns and 35 being axed in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula. Labor has invested millions to achieve better health outcomes in the Far North and we can’t afford to have Campbell Newman and Tony Ab-

bott take our local healthcare system backwards. Five of the positions being shed are in clinical areas. The Cape York Hospital and Health Service says three senior Directors of Nursing and two clinical nurses within the sexual and women’s health service and the mental health service will all be axed. These are positions we simply can’t afford to lose. People are crying out for better mental health care. I can only imagine how parents and the elderly in the remote and isolated parts of Cape York must feel over these cuts. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch and his LNP state counterpart David Kempton had been far too silent on the issue. There’s been a distinct lack of leadership, compassion or empathy from both the Federal and State members here. Warren Entsch and David Kempton need to stop shirking their responsibilities. People should be able to rely on them to stand up for their jobs and job security.

2 – Cooktown Local News 21 - 27 March 2013
We are looking down the barrel of creating a permanent under class in this country between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’. One class of people that can afford health cover and education and one class of people that can not. It’s clear what’s happening at a state level is a blueprint for what we would see under a Tony Abbott government. The Federal Labor Government is delivering record funding to Queensland - it will increase by 21 per cent over the next four years, an extra $600 million. The Newman Government should be using this unprecedented investment in Queensland health services to deliver better outcomes for patients, including here in Cape York. It is becoming clearer that Campbell Newman’s cuts in Queensland would be the blueprint for Tony Abbott’s Australia. We can’t let Tony Abbott do to Australia what Campbell Newman has done to Queensland. Billy Gordon, ALP Candidate for Leichhardt EVERYONE is bemoaning the lack of yet another Wet, but there is only one who has won a $25 meat voucher in this week’s Cornett’s IGA Cooktown and Cooktown Local News photo competition and that is Dale Tan’s Cooktown Cicada Crying For Rain. As well as winning this week’s voucher, Dale goes into the draw again for the end of year grand prize. And along with our other winners, he can continue entering each week for as long as he pleases. You now have until 5pm on Thursday, March 28 to submit your entry for this week’s stage of the competition, and remember, entries need to be full resolution - between 1mb and 10mb in size and they need to be forwarded as an email attachment to editor@ cooktownlocalnews.com.au . And please include your contact numbers. Dale’s winning entry will be printed and displayed in a gallery the IGA has prepared in their store.

at no cost to Council. It is of concern that the new service, which is rural and not like the townships of Cooktown, Rossville and Marton, will discourage landholders from responsibility in waste management and add to Council expenditures. I think an apology from Council and rescission of the decision is called for. Restoration of a degree of respect by both sides would be good for all concerned. There are approximately 150 parcels of land in the new area, of which 76 are eligible to be charged for the “service” (?). 8 to go at hospital restructure; 6 new jobs created ALTHOUGH the Cape York Hospital and Health Service has identified eight Cooktownbased roles as being surplus to needs in the most-recent round of state government health cuts, six new positions have been created. Chief Executive Officer Susan Turner said a total of 74 staff are based at Cooktown, of which only eight are affected by the restructure being undertaken. “There are 64 staff actually employed by the Cooktown
MPHS, plus another 10 who are also based at Cooktown MPHS, but who actually work either for the Cape York Hospital and Health Service Corporate Office or for other HHS-wide services,” Ms Turner said. “Only eight Cooktownbased positions are affected by the restructure. “These comprise four administrative positions, one in operational services and three Allied Health positions.” Ms Turner said it should be noted that one of those three
Allied Health positions actually is, and has been vacant for a very long time, which is why it has been declared surplus. “So for that position, the declaration of the position as surplus actually affects no one!” she said. In relation to the newlycreated positions, Ms Turner said three will be administrative positions, two in operational services and one in Allied Health. She said Cooktown-based staff who have been affected by
the restructure can apply for one of these new roles if they have the necessary skills and do not want to take a redundancy, but prefer to remain with the HHS. “At this stage, we cannot say precisely how many staff may leave Cooktown, as the staff consultation process is still under way, along with negotiations on whether or not some staff may prefer to take redundancies or seek to apply for one of the new Cooktownbased roles and remain with the HHS,” she said.
Wallaby safe to use: TMR THE Department of Transport and Main Roads has assured road users that the Wallaby Creek Bridge is safe to use, despite concerns raised in last week’s edition of the Cooktown Local News by Shiptons Flat resident Paul Gavin Jr. “We have a strict process in place for assessing structural integrity of bridges on our state-controlled road network,” a TMR spokesman said. “Wallaby Creek bridge was inspected by TMR bridge inspectors in late 2012 as part of this regular inspection program and no structural issues needing immediate attention were identified.” However, in response to the points raised by Mr Gavin, a TMR engineer will examine the bridge in the next two weeks to ensure there are no issues which require immediate attention. The spokesman said that about two years ago, four girders and a headstock were replaced. “This bridge was built some time ago,” he said. “Construction methods have changed, however, we can assure road
users the Wallaby Creek bridge is safe. “As part of ongoing maintenance, all timber elements are replaced when needed, generally every five to 10 years. “We will continue to monitor the condition of the bridge and address any issues on a priority basis.” Mr Gavin raised a number of issues about the bridge’s structural credibility. “There is rot in all the supports, and bolts without nuts on them, while I believe the bridge alignment has shifted,” he told the Cooktown Local News last week. “I’m no expert, but it looks like the pillars don’t line up any more. “They’re only held together by four bolts. “Some of the pillars have cracked down the middle - some have been cut-and-shunted, some have been plated.” He said recently-completed roadworks on the Bloomfield Road further along the southern side of the bridge had seen the bridge exposed to excessive heavy vehicle usage, to which the TMR spokesman said: “Although the bridge is capable of carrying heavy vehicles, Shiptons Flat Road is not an approved B-Double route.”

Martin declines Leichhardt approach for Katter Party THE Cooktown Local News has been able to confirm early advice that Cooktown local Charlie Martin had been approached to stand as a Katter’s Australia Party candidate for the seat of Leichhardt in the upcoming September federal elections. But without speaking to Bob Katter, the party’s founder, Mr Martin has declined the approach. He said he had been overwhelmed by the approach, which had been made by a senior party member in the region. “I felt very honoured to have been approached by the Katter Party for me to consider this appointment,” Mr Martin said. “I have given this much thought, and, after speaking
to friends, I have come to the conclusion that in my current circumstances, it would not be in my best interest for me to stand for nomination at this point in time. Mr Martin recently announced his resignation from his second term as a Cook Shire Councillor, effective after the April general meeting of Council, and is considering other career options, which might include a move to the Northern Territory. “I do wish the Katter Party all the very best in the forthcoming federal election.” he said. “And I would like to thank those who have given me the their support. “It’s been very humbling to know that people have thought enough of me to consider me as a candidate.”
Police to target the Fatal 5 over Easter TO minimise road trauma on Queensland roads during the Easter Holiday period, the Queensland Police Service will be involved in Police Operation Crossroads, a combination of a highly visible and covert police Beat presence and the enforcement of the state’s road rules. The campaign is targeting the Fatal 5 offences of speeding, seatbelts, drink/drug driving, fatigue and driver distraction/inattention. In recent enforcement action, a male has been released on strict bail conditions after being arrested for breaking into a car on Kimberley Street conditions. And two males were arrested on Hope Street in the early hours of Saturday morning for being involved in a disturbance. They too were released on bail. In a traffic-related matter, a male was arrested on the Endeavour Valley Road on Friday night for drink driving with a blood alcohol percentage of .136 per cent. All those charged will appear at the next sittings of the Cooktown Magistrate’s Court on April 4.
Road toll climbing at alarming rate AS the Easter holiday season approaches, the Queensland Police Service has issued a grim warning about this year’s road toll to date - warning of a horror year on Queensland’s roads as the road toll continues to climb. As at midnight on March 13, the toll stood at 65 deaths, 16 more than for the same time last year, and a frightening 21 higher than for the same time in 2010, the year in which the least number of people were killed on our roads since accurate counting of road deaths began in 1952. Acting Chief Superintendent Morrow from the State Traffic Support Branch, providing preliminary details of fatalities this year so far, cautioned that investigations are ongoing and some details, particularly around cause, may change. He said that of the 65 fatalities, police suspect that a combination of alcohol and speed played a large part in least 19 of the deaths. Eight people killed appeared not to have been wearing a seatbelt. Sixteen people were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in, or the vehicle that collided with them, lost control. A further six people were killed when drivers attempted to drive on flooded roads. Acting Chief Superintendent Morrow said that of the 65 people killed on the road this year three were children under nine, the oldest person was 90, with the average age being 38. Motorcycle riders accounted for 12 of the fatalities. “Close to one person every day has been killed on our roads so far this year and hundreds have been injured.” He added that with the first quarter of 2013 almost gone and no sign of the road toll abating, police will continue to spend considerable time and resources on road safety including a series of upcoming traffic operations

IN MEMORY OF RONALD WILLIAM SIMPSON (SIMMO) - 20/3/1939 - 10/3/2013
‘Legend of the north’ remembered by many ‘SIMMO’ would have been 74 yesterday, had he not lost his 18-month battle with cancer. Instead, more than 200 mourners laid Cooktown’s loveable, iconic rogue to rest on Friday, March 15 with most not knowing his real name, Ronald William Simpson. Such was the level of esteem the man was held in the community, there probably would have been many more in attendance except for work and other commitments. And anyone who knew him would have a laugh or a story to tell about the man. “Simmo was all that anyone ever called him,” said his sister Bunny Blackwell. “In fact, the only time I ever heard anyone call him ‘Ron’ was James Baines the artist when he was doing his painting for the Archibald Prize.” ‘Simmo’ arrived in Cooktown in 1960, a place he once described as a ghost town and said it hadn’t changed much since. So how would you describe the man who was renowned for his quick wit and as a prolific poet and short story writer. Inimitable? “Oh no, inimitable would be too fancy for Simmo, he was a very simple man,” Bunny remembered. “He was a man who liked to see the good in everyone. “He didn’t put any importance on possessions or worldly goods, he gave away or sold most everything he owned, and usually very cheaply.” What about ‘normal’, ‘different’ or eccentric? “Oh no, definitely not normal, he’d be annoyed if you thought he was normal,” she said. Bunny recounted how he only owned two pair of thongs. “One pair was green and the other was red,” she said. “And he used to wear a different colour on each foot - one he’d call ‘port’ and the other ‘starboard’ so he knew which was left and right.” And what about naming his shirts? “He’d write ‘Monday’, ‘Tuesday’ and so on for the day of the week he was going to wear a shirt,” she said. The story of naming his shirts jogged her memory about his faith in people. “There was a young bloke down at the Top Pub who didn’t have a shirt,” she said. “So Simmo gave him his, forgetting he had left $200 in one of the pockets. “When he got home, he remembered the money, but just thought he’d spent it at the pub. Did he ever get the shirt back? “No, believe it or not, the young bloke took the money back to the pub for him, but kept the shirt,” she laughed. Did he really work as a ‘call girl’? “Yes, but not in the sense you’re thinking,” she smiled. “He was a telephonist at the telephone

127 Charlotte St, Cooktown exchange when it was working.” Bunny said Simmo had worked at a number of jobs while in Cooktown, some of which included undertaker, bridge builder, fire chief, snake catcher (milking the reptiles
for their venom), zoo keeper, caravan park proprietor and even a court bailiff. More about Simmo was revealed at his church service in a eulogy written and delivered by his son, Andrew.
Eulogy written/delivered by son Andrew Dad was a simple man, never wanting for much. He was happy with a good view and a bottle of rum. He loved the bush, coming from Helensburgh, Sydney to Cooktown in 1960. He moved around constantly, never staying in one place for too long, sometimes camping in the bush. At other times, living on blocks he owned, a total of 43 in all, including Cooktown’s first caravan park and even a wild life zoo. He had many jobs in the far north, from undertaking to bridge building, to mining to mail man. He was even a bailiff. He’d go around to let the people know he was coming so they could get money together or clear out before he came back. Dad was very independent, hard-headed and eccentric. I once found him sitting on newspapers in the coffin factory with a bottle of metho. I thought was drinking it until I realised he was half through a hernia operation on himself. Dad used to custom-build the coffins for the morgue, which he ran. So when mum gave birth to me, he built a little coffin to use as a cot for me. Simmo will be missed by many. He was a legend of the north.

Food to sustain the Ulysses Butterfly GARDENING WHO doesn’t love to see with MARTY PATTIE the Ulysses Butterfly? The symbol of tropical Queensland, it’s a sight to see as its electric blue wing flashes against the green backdrop. Two things to plant to attract them: most importantly the food plant of the caterpillar (they are very fussy), which is the Pink Euodia, Melicope elleryana. Also food for the butterflies - they are attracted to red flowers, pentas and ixora are ideal species; they are prolific bloomers, hardy and full of nectar. Both are very common and easily grown from cuttings. Infested with grasshoppers? Don’t want to use insecticide? Try this: catch a mob of them, blend them thoroughly, dilute with water, add a few drops of detergent as a surfactant, then spray back onto affected plants. Death deters! Have you got a child that likes to eat plants (or even perhaps an underfed tethered adult)? Avoid dieffenbachia - a common (and very attractive) tropical shade loving and indoor plant. Its common name is Dumb Cane, because it contains the toxins oxalic acid and asparagine which can cause swelling in the tongue and mouth if ingested. Weeding is a necessary chore at this time of year. When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. What you put in your wheelie bin or take to the dump can be turned into compost. Any green waste or kitchen scraps (except meat or fish), paper (shredded) even dog hair! More on compost later. Lime: great in a spritzer, better in a Corona - but your soil needs it too in the form of dolomite. It sweetens up sour soil after lots of rain and helps raise the pH from acid to alkaline. Acid soils lock nutrients in. To find out your soil pH you can buy a pH test kit from the nursery. They are cheap and easy to use. Another constant task at this time of year is cutting the grass. Ideally, you should cut regularly and mulch the clippings back into the lawn and not cut more than a third of the length of the grass. In a perfect world perhaps? If you lack the mowtivation and it’s suddenly waist high, call Colleen’s Garden Care. Talk to your plants? No, you’re not mad, the carbon dioxide we breath out is lapped up (tax free) by our plants. So if you hear the little old lady next door telling her cordyline cuttings to “get rooted” don’t think anything of it. Another homemade insecticide to deter chewing and sucking pests is molasses - 1 tablespoon in a litre of water, with a few drops of detergent or soap flakes. The soap helps coat the foliage with the molasses water, which makes it unpalatable to many pests whilst not adversely affecting the plant. Also, palm stumps will rot away quicker if yoghurt is applied to them after they are cut. If you have any queries, email me at: info@martinpattie.com.au

Are the drones coming to get you?
I AM reporting to you today from the front lines of a titanic struggle, another battle in the long-running campaign of the Cook Shire to get its recalcitrant ratepayers to do what they are told. Will they win? Who knows? I stopped Sergeant Fred Blurke as he prepped his 4WD before going on patrol to the further reaches of Cooktown. I asked him what he was chasing. “Well, it’s all these rate-payers, isn’t it? I mean, they keep wanting

There are all sorts of packages out there, and you can buy one or have a contractor fly missions for you. I went back to Sergeant Blurke: “Yeah, well, it’s simple really. You pay your rates, that’s fine. You don’t pay your rates, or you get stroppy with the Shire, and we’re going to fly over your place and take photos of all the illegal structures you’ve put up. Burgeoning fruit and tin industries in 1913 EVER thought how the people of Cooktown made a living in 1913? Interest was sparked by the article below, and I wanted to see just how much fruit was grown. Transport in and out of town was by ship. We don’t have shipping records for 1913, but 1912 is close for the purpose of seeing what was coming and going from our port. In the nine-month period between March and December, the main ships were the Mourilyan and the Warrego. The Warrego was actually sold to the Navy in 1912 and her last voyage seems to have been in June. What I discovered was a very productive fruit industry, not only citrus, but also mangoes and peanuts, with some pineapples and bananas. The Cooktown Orchards Cairns Post, Saturday, March 1, 1913 “Mr. G. Williams, Inspector Diseases in Plants returned on Thursday from a visit to Cooktown, and during the course of conversation with a representative of the Post, said that he was extremely gratified with the
progress made during the past 12 months at the various orchards there. The growers were always ready to act upon advice and follow instructions. Previously, no practical instruction had been awarded, and Mr Williams has invariably found that demonstrating what should be done, and how to do it, will have fifty times more effect than a mere expression of directions. In the vicinity of Cooktown, the vegetation presents a verdant appearance, and the cultivated crops look particularly promising. Principal attention is given to maize, peanuts and citrus fruits, principally the two latter. Whilst fruit trees are young, their joint cultivation with peanuts is an economical and successful method of working the land to the best advantage. A general all-round improvement was noted in fruit culture during the last 12 months. The area planted and prepared for trees now on order has been doubled, the best varieties adapted to the local circumstances planted, systematic cultivation, pruning,
GOOD morning people who are grateful for the finished work of Jesus. For far too much of my life, I have lived with regret over past sins. How about you? It is the truth that regret is a wasted emotion. If something has happened in the past, we cannot undo it. spraying; etc, have become general, and the equipment in use at the principal orchards will compare very favourably with that of any others in the state. The excessive cost of placing fruit on the southern markets is a big item, but after allowing for all contingencies, the net returns last season exceeded by over 100 per cent those which growers in the south consider satisfactory. This is mainly attributable to the season of ripening, coupled with fine quality. There is every facility for great expansion of the citrus trade and pineapple growing for the southern markets. Mr Williams says that pines have received but little attention up to the present, but, as with oranges, they mature during the dry season, and carry well, the quality being much above the average. The keeping qualities of the orange are much ahead of those ripening under moist conditions. A sample case taken at random last season, showed little deterioration and no decay, after being kept under ordinary conditions for

ST PATRICK’S DAY at the SOVEREIGN RESORT HOTEL THE mournful strains of a tin whistle wafting across Charlotte Street on Sunday afternoon, conjured up images of a fog descending on the Irish moors. But it was a bright sunny day and the music drifting over the rails of the Sovereign Resort Hotel soon changed to a jaunty jig as local band U 4 Reel lifted the tempo for the revellers celebrating St Patrick’s Day in the Balcony Bar. And lift the tempo they did, with Jimmy O’Fay on percussion, Linda
O’Martin on vocals and guitar, Jennifer O’Hall on tin whistle, guitar and vocals, Michael O’Shay on bass and local medico Melanie O’Scrace swapping her stethoscope for a fiddle, while rainforest leprechaun, Fiona O’Mitchell had been trapped into playing the drums. Even the self-proclaimed Filipino man from Guam, guitarist Nelson O’Conboy claimed Irish roots. “True!” he laughed. “Conboy is an Irish name!”
Local lad ‘Benny’ got a visit from him mum and step-dad, Jenny and Murray Rowse and celebrated at the Sovvy St Patrick’s Day.
With green the dominant colour worn, there were also a few splashes of orange, while the heathens who didn’t lay claim to even the minutest splash of Irish DNA turned up in any old colour. And as the Guinness and green beer flowed freely, it was obvious nearly everyone had kissed the Blarney Stone, and had possibly swallowed it with all the tall tales being told. But who did have the deepest Irish roots?
Michael O’Shay claimed an ancestor of his had actually been St Patrick’s cart driver and taken a bullet for him in an assassination attempt. As the afternoon wore on and the dancing started, the highlight of those tripping the light fantastic was Irish Wog John O’Dessman engaged in a passionate performance of the Guinness tango with possibly the scariest leprechaun, Keith O’Bradford. Earlier that afternoon, some of the Top Pub’s diehard faithful had started

STUDENTS REWARDED FOR POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR IT has been an amazing two weeks at Cooktown P-12. After much anticipation, the “SWPBS Shop” opened. Students who had exemplified our school rule of being Safe Respectful Learners were able to browse the assortment of prizes by window shopping or hand in completed sheets of Blue Cards and select an item they wanted. The prizes include stationery, lunchboxes, eskies for bait, iPhone covers and art materials to list a few. The shop is a fantastic way for us to reward students for maintaining their commitment to learning, which they have continued throughout the term. Not only has the shop proven to be a
success this term, but so have many of the clubs and activities that have been happening at lunchtime and before school. One of our senior students, Benson Wiseman, started Drawing Club, which has been successfully held each Monday in the Library for students from all year levels to enjoy. Benson leads students through drawing skills and encourages them to let their creativity come through in their pictures. The Library is also a popular venue before school on Thursday when students can join in Story Time. Engaging with animated story telling by different members of staff from both primary and high school, students experience a fun, engaging session before
class begins. Another club with growing popularity is Computer Club. Under the guidance of Mr Stewart, students have been learning how to create and use sprites for inclusion in the games they are developing. This team are assigned roles and are creating the atmosphere of a real game development company by learning what they need to contribute in their role. Team spirit has also been seen in another event this term. The Prep to Year 7 students are participating as class teams in a bit of recycling rivalry. Collecting recyclable bottles, the students are putting in a huge effort to be the best recyclers in the Cooktown Council Recycling Challenge.
A huge effort is also being shown by the Student Councillors and class groups to help ensure Cooktown P-12 is a great school. Last week Year 3/4M and the Junior Secondary Student Council worked together to raise funds for the World’s Greatest Shave. Very generously, teachers Bret Crosby, Shane Mayberry and Jimmy Daniels offered to shave their heads for the cause and Chris Stewart to permanently dye his hair. Thanks to the donations from students, parents and community, we raised just over $1500 which was shy of the $2000 target. However, with suspense in the air and the question of will they or won’t they, the generosity of our volunteers was soon
evident as they all went ahead with the shave and dye. In a fantastic school event last Friday afternoon, with never-ending applause and support for our volunteers, Mr Crosby’s long locks went, Mr Mayberry’s Mohawk went, Mr Daniels’ fro went and Mr Stewart’s hair went an indescribable shade of orange. Thank you very much to everyone who supported this event, we are very appreciative of your donations. We are very proud of the efforts our students have been making this term to be a part of the great things happening at our school. A big congratulation to our students for displaying behaviours that show they are Safe Respectful Learners.

CLARE RICHARDS
Corned-beef an old-fashioned comfort food MOST of us have some old-fashioned comfort foods, even if we have ventured out into the world of flavours and taken some Thai, Greek, Mexican or Mongolian back home into our day-today cooking. One that would have to be high on the Australian list is corned-beef - the real thing cooked from scratch, not the terribly high salt, high fat canned version. So I thought today, I would offer an alternative three veg to go with your next corned beef indulgence, three veg that reflect what can grow well in our northern gardens. Having a ‘rainbow on your plate’ is a simple guide to getting maximum nutrition and variety into our diets, because vegetables of different colours have different combinations of nutrients in them. Although I have used a pale cabbage in this photo, if I had the dark leafed members of the cabbage family in my garden at present, I’d use those instead. I haven’t included my recipe for corned beef, but the amounts below will serve vegetables for 4 people. If you want my recipe for corned beef, let me know! 4 lemongrass bases, finely sliced and diced 2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped ¼ cup coconut milk, then another ¼ cup 2 medium (600g) orange-fleshed sweet potato (kumera) ½ knob ginger, freshly grated (3-4 teaspoons grated) pinch of salt ¼ cabbage (500g) finely sliced/ shredded good squeeze of lime juice 12 snake beans or 8 winged beans In either a mortar and pestle or small food processor, blend the garlic, lemongrass and ¼ cup coconut milk until as fine as possible. Reserve the other ¼ cup coconut milk for later. Place a kettle of water on to boil.
Corned beef and a different three veg. Photo: CLARE RICHARDS. Scrub the sweet potato, peel it if not organically grown and cut into 2cm slices. Steam for 20 minutes or until soft. Tip steaming water out of pan, add sweet potato, sprinkle grated ginger and salt over the sweet potato, mash well and replace lid to keep warm. Place a non-stick frypan over medium heat and once hot add the lemongrass mix. Cook, stirring regularly, for a few minutes until the garlic scent has softened and the mixture dried out a bit. Add the cabbage, a tablespoon or so of water and the coconut milk and stir well to lift the lemongrass off the bottom of the pan. Turn the heat up to medium-hot, place a lid on the pan and cook for a few minutes until the cabbage is just wilting a bit and becoming translucent. Remove from heat, add a good squeeze of lime juice and keep lid on to keep warm. Add enough boiling water to a saucepan over a high heat to cover the beans and cook for about four minutes, until slightly softened and still bright green. Drain beans and serve with corned beef, sweet potato mash and lemongrass cabbage as an alternative three veg!
New insight into flying fox colonies RESEARCHERS from the Queensland Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases have made significant progress into understanding the effect of dispersal on flying fox colonies. Biosecurity Queensland’s principal scientist Dr Hume Field said the 12-month research project assessed the impact of colony dispersal on stress and Hendra virus infection levels in affected flying foxes. “A key finding of the project found there was no association between the disturbance to a colony from dispersal and an increase in the excretion of Hendra virus,” Dr Field said. “Researchers measured
the stress hormones and virus levels in flying foxes by collecting and testing urine before, during and after the dispersal of a colony. “Transmitters were also attached to flying foxes to track their movements by satellite, and showed that flying foxes did not stay in the one colony, but regularly moved from colony to colony. “Of the 13 colonies monitored, (10 in Queensland, three in New South Wales), 10 were dispersed or disturbed as a result of the submission of a Damage Mitigation Permit.” In Queensland, colony dispersal may only occur after a comprehensive assessment is completed by the Department of
Environment and Heritage Protection and under a Damage Mitigation Permit. Dr Field said the study provided scientific evidence that disturbed colonies typically had measurable, short lived stress of a similar level to that seen with natural stress events such as mating. “Research also highlighted that Hendra virus excretion was much less in little red flying foxes and in grey-headed flying foxes,” Dr Field said. oxes to horses,” Dr Field said. For more information on Hendra virus and flying fox research, visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov. au or call 13 25 23.

THE North Queensland Toyota Cowboys have extended head coach Neil Henry’s contract until the end of the 2014 season on the eve of his 150th match as an NRL coach. Attempting to become the first coach to lead the Cowboys to three consecutive finals appearances, Henry last weekend brought up his century of games in charge of North Queensland in their 24-12 defeat of Canterbury in Gosford. Henry first joined the Cowboys as an assistant coach in 2003 before joining Canberra as their NRL head coach in 2007 and 2008. He was named as the Dally M Coach of the Year in ‘08 and returned to the Cowboys as head coach in 2009. Garden

most common type of death (4 of 16, or 25 per cent). In two-thirds of all domestic homicides (6 of 9, or 67 per cent), there was evidence that a breakdown in the parental relationship was a factor. Acting Queensland Children’s Commissioner Barry Salmon noted that: “All but one fatal assault and neglect child death was characterised by at least one reported vulnerability characteristic present in the child’s family, for example, a history of domestic violence, parental drug/alcohol abuse, criminal offending or child protection concerns. “These findings highlight that at-risk families are over-represented in fatal assault and neglect child deaths in Queensland. This emphasises the importance of service systems that may already be supporting at-risk families to also address any potential associated risk to children.

His contract extension will bring his total number of years at North Queensland to 10 and his stint as head coach to six years, making him the third longest-serving head coach at an NRL club behind Melbourne’s Craig Bellamy and Gold Coast’s John Cartwright. Cowboys CEO Peter Jourdain said the coach’s contract extension recognised his achievement in making the 2011 and 2012 finals series and building a squad capable of challenging for the 2013 premiership. “Neil has taken this club forward considerably and we look forward to him continuing in his role beyond this season, Mr Jourdain said. “He has done a fantastic job in getting the club into the finals over the
last two seasons and we are looking forward to further success this year. The coach’s contract extension comes in the same week that two-time Dally M Medal winner Johnathan Thurston re-signed with the Cowboys until the end of the 2017 season, joining fellow co-captain Matthew Scott and Test prop James Tamou in committing long-term to North Queensland. “My links here go back some time now and it remains a huge honour to be the coach of the Cowboys, Henry said. “I’m pleased the club has seen fit to extend my time here and it also gives some stability to the other members of the coaching staff who have been working hard to turn North Queensland into a premiership contender.

Along the BLOOMFIELD TRACK A spotlight night with Eric, the wildlife whisperer
LEFT: Nicely camouflaged lichen spider sitting on eggs. RIGHT: Lichen spider with hatched young. Photos: ERIC BUCHINGER. WHAT wildlife can you spot in your backyard at night? It’s a great time to have a look, it’s been consistently wet enough and the rainforest has come to life. Green growth, flowers, insects feeding on the growth, and following them, even bigger wildlife - the web of life. This week, Eric Buchinger, a colleague who has been revisiting the area from Mt Isa with partner Roz Fisher these last few weeks, gave a fascinating insight into how exciting the rainforest is right now at night during the wet season. Eric is a real wildlife whisperer, loves the beauty of nature at night, and is one of those rare breed who can not only find wildlife, but keep calm them while taking excellent photos. “I walked along the driveway with my spotlight, and only a few metres along, a bandicoot came running out of the undergrowth at me. It stayed, stunned or interested I’m not sure, long enough for some photos,
but eventually I moved around and it ran off,” he said. “Then, in a half hour period, I found several northern barred frogs, Stoney Creeks frogs, katydids and preying mantids. “A lichen spider was sitting on its eggs on a lipstick palm, perfectly camouflaged. “A bit further on, just out the front near the road, I came across a two metre scrub python, which I picked up to have a good look at. “Eventually it slithered away onto an old branch and stayed there while he digested his frog meal. “Over two nights, I took photos of two stoney creek frogs, both of them had a mosquito on their heads, one photo clearly shows blood, so here’s a question - do mosquitoes take blood from frogs, or was the frog just a passenger on the frog between meals? (I cant’ see why not Eric - the female needs blood and frogs have blood so why not? There aren’t enough mammals in the rainforest to satisfy all the breeding mosquitoes).
“The frog chorus during the rain was amazing, it’s so intensely loud as the males’ mating sounds built up and up and up. “Back on the balcony, we listened to the sounds of a striped possum moving from tree to tree, tearing at the fan palms and this moving sound around a 180 degree half circle. “We couldn’t get quite close enough for a photo, but it seemed quite relaxed despite our presence and the spotlight.” Eric’s hints for spotlighting at night are as follows: • Preferably wear a headlamp as it leaves your hands free and because any eye-flash reflects straight back onto your eye. If you have a hand held torch, hold it up at eye level.
ABOVE: Blood engorged mosquito sitting on head of stoney creek frog. BELOW: Scrub python restimg after eating frog.
• Wa l k slowly and quietly. Avoid jerky movements. You often don’t have to go far too spot wildlife. The Bloomfield River Crossing was closed again for several days after last week’s rain, with the prospect of the tailings of Cyclone Tim causing some more mischief this week. It’s good to be back home after a great trip to Brazil, and to see everything so green. Hope Vale thrash under-strength Cooktown 22-5

Kris Casey enjoying his run as the night’s ‘token male’ in the competition.
A DISMAL turnout from Cooktown players forced the inclusion of Hope Vale girls into the home side, just so Monday night’s game could be played. So it is little wonder Cooktown crashed to its third loss for the season, a 22-5 thrashing in a match played between the Blues (Cooktown) and the Greens (Hope Vale). From the get-go, the Greens came out firing with the Blues having no answer as they tried to regain their composure against the mid-court attack mounted by Chrissy Cobus and Jacaan Hart - an impossible task. For the Greens, Kiri White turned in an all-star performance in an impressive defensive display, ably assisted by the greatly-improved Carmen Pearson and Lenore Casey. From the start of the second half, the Blues’ Courtney Robson really made the wing defence position her own, taking may fine intercepts throughout the match and putting on the pressure whenever she could. Execution and attitudes changed after a few positional changes for the Blues, with Monique Bidois and Jules Bridellet looking to pursue a comeback, but despite some fantastic play making, the Greens were just too strong in defence. In attack, they fired the ball down the court as soon as it was touched. Statistically, the competition’s best scorer is the Greens’ Karen Gordon, but on Monday night, Leanne Liddy ignored the statistics to provide some very stiff opposition for her opponent. Despite Leanne’s attention, Karen still led the scoring to help take the Greens to victory. Players of the match were the Green’s Kirsty Bowen and Doreen Hart - their phenomenal focus and intensity really helping steer their team to its win. The tight bond that has formed in this Hope Vale team is a real success story, with their newest recruit, Kelly Ambrym boasting some of the best defensive skills in our competition. Thanks must go to Kris Casey for filling in on Monday night. New and old players are invited to Monday night’s game, which will be held at the PCYC Cooktown Events Centre from 6.45pm. Cost to play is only $2 per game. By KRISTY QUEENIE

River Jacks and reef Jacks were out after a week of great weather
Mark Ryder with a decent Spanish mackerel.
LURE casters have enjoyed the calm weather, testing their skills. With a bit of fresh colouring the rivers and bays, the results have equalled great fun and a feed. In the rivers, the fishing has also been great, with grunter, finger mark, barra and a few mud crabs finding their way on to local dinner plates last week. Offshore free-diving and reef fishing by day and night have been fun and the results have been great, Spanish mackerel, coral trout, spangled emperor and reef jacks were among the reported captures. The good news on the new boat ramp is that it should be operational on April 15, which will be great. And with this weekend’s weather forecast looking sad, I think a bit of work around home might be the best option. Plover the only ‘birdie’ scored in Friday golf COOKTOWN Golf Club’s “dark horse” Paul Haley stampeded over the top of last week’s Italian Restaurant Stableford competition early leader Steve Wilton to take the event with 40 Stableford points. And welcome to our newest member, Ray Lennox. Thanks for joining and supporting our local club. It was like old times on Friday for the Brekkie Club Tradie golf afternoon. Sixteen came out to enjoy a round of nine holes and to quench their thirsts. The Scott Earthmoving crew joined the normal crew and what a fantastic afternoon everyone had? Glen Scott managed to make a birdie on the first hole played, but not in the usual golf terms - Glen managed to take a poor plover out with his drive. Thankfully the plover was just a little shell-shocked and managed to fly away, but with a few feathers missing. A handful of groups played in last Saturday’s 2-Person Ambrose competition. However, a dispute has been lodged, which has been
forwarded to the Club Captain for his decision. Once a decision has been made, winners will be notified. There were no disputes for the nearest-the-pins, with Graham Burton taking out 2/11 and Rick Butler for 14 and 9/18. Congratulations to Michael Drahm for entering and winning his first-ever competition. Michael was the winner of the Cape York Tyres Sunday 9-Hole Stroke competition with a nett score of 32. Craig Wason was next in line with a score of 35. Michael is also leading the field for The Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition with a nett 68. Well done Michael and Craig! This year’s Cooktown Open will be held on the weekend of May 25 and 26. Nomination forms will be sent out shortly - I just need to get catering costs and confirmation from the committee as to the cost of the nomination fee. If you are not going to be playing in this year’s Open, please remember that volunteers are greatly needed for that particular weekend, Friday afternoon
included. The Cooktown Discovery Festival committee In the and Cooktown Re-enactment Bunker Association committee have confirmed they will cater for the barbecue breakfast and lunch. Thanks to both of those committees. Daniel from Drummond Golf Cairns will be coming to Cooktown again to conduct some golf lessons. The lessons will be held on the afternoons of Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20 and then again on the morning of Sunday, April 21. Please let me know if you want a lesson ($50 for and individual half hour, or $80 for a 2-person hourlesson) and for which day you would like it so I can pencil you in to the schedule. Happy golfing everyone. Kelly Barnett, Manager, Cooktown Golf Club.

Chat with Matt G’DAY again I’d be telling lies if I said we aren’t all bitterly disappointed at the way we played against the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night. We let them in for some easy, early tries, then we couldn’t get back into the game. Melbourne being Melbourne, they always tackle well and we just weren’t able to penetrate their well-drilled defence. Their clinical game plan is something they’re known for, but while every team knows what they are going to do, it’s another thing to stop them or get over the top of them and that’s something we couldn’t do on the night. They controlled the speed of the game, especially around the rucks, speeding things up and slowing things down as they went. They’ve got a lot of little tricks they employ, which are all part of their success. They’re not the premiers for nothing. For my own game, I tried to get involved wherever I could, but it was hard. Sometimes, the ball just doesn’t go your way. Other than Ray Thompson, who will be out for a while, everyone pulled up without any injuries, although we are pretty sore from that Melbourne defence. With JT (Johnathan Thurston) and Neil Henry (coach) being re-signed to new contracts, I’ve been asked what’s happening with me when my contract expires at the end of the year. Those sorts of things are what I leave up to my manager, but within myself, I feel as though I could play on for another five years. I love playing, but the training and playing does take a lot out of you. I would definitely love to stay at the Cowboys, but at this early stage, it’s a matter of waiting and seeing. We’re headed to Newcastle’s Hunter Stadium for Monday night footy this week. Both of us have one win and one loss under our belts, so we’ll both be determined to record a victory to get back on the winners’ list. But we’re under no illusions as to how hard the game’s going to be. I’ve said it before, it doesn’t matter where the Knights are running in the competition, they’re incredibly difficult to play on their home turf. Anyway, we’ll be doing our best, and I hope you can find the time to tune in on Fox at 6pm to give us all your support, - MATT BOWEN
