Photo: ERIC GEORGE. INSET: Queensland Premier Campbell Newman (right) arrives at Cooktown Airport with his media officer Kylie Jacobsen, Member for Cook David Kempton and Mrs Lisa Newman. Photo: GARY HUTCHISON. QUEENSLAND Premier Campbell Newman was met at Cooktown Airport on Tuesday by six local, placard-waving members of the Queensland Nurses’ Union, but did he get the message? That was the question union representative Jola George was left asking after she and her compatriots, Debbie Slater, Peta Lyons, Cheryl Bess and Kaye Clarke greeted the Premier with friendly “hellos” and “welcome to Cooktown”. With “Hands off our jobs”, “Cut Polies not nurses” and “No more health cuts” clearly visible in letters about a metre high, Mrs George said she felt her little group’s peaceful demonstration against the Newman government’s massive cuts in health spending should have given a clear message to the Premier. “I went to him and asked him if he got the message,”

Mrs George said. “But he just smiled and said ‘what message’ and walked off.” Mrs George said the Nurses’ Union was very concerned that the Newman government’s cost cutting was not supposed to affect nurses, but that is not the case. “By the end of March, we believe there will be 120 jobs lost in Townsville,” she said. She said she was aware that funding to the Cooktown hospital’s budget had been cut, but as yet there had been no discussion about the fate of its nurses. A key area of major concern to the union is the ratio of nurses per patient per hour. “The previous government honoured the union’s requirements on this, but the new government is ignoring it with all this cost cutting,” she said.

Shire’s disaster policies help with state’s guidelines COOK Shire takes the threat of disaster seriously and has worked hard to ensure the new Cooktown Events Centre was ready for use as a cyclone shelter in the 2011-2012 cyclone season. Peta Lyons, who recently transferred from Cairns Base Hospital to Cooktown, said pharmaceutical staff in that establishment had been cut dramatically. “Other cuts I saw were in the fields of social work, occupational therapists and physiotherapists,” Ms Lyons said. “But they’re also taking less graduate nurses too.” Mrs George said advice from the Nurses’ Union received late on Monday was that her group should be polite, courteous and non-confrontative, which she believed they were. In the short time since being notified by the union, she gleaned what information she could on the job cuts and proposed job cuts until now. Cyclone Shelter Operations and Maintenance Guidelines. Ali Ward, the Cooktown contractor who worked with Council officers to compile the Cooktown Cyclone Shelter Standard Operating Procedures, said the new guidelines provide a comprehensive template covering all aspects of cyclone shelter management and maintenance. “There is certainly some familiar wording in the document,” Ms Ward said.

Repair crews ‘heroes’ after sub-station meltdown Cooktown Local News that 1417 customers lost power supply at about 9.30 on Saturday night due to a fault in the substation. “One piece of equipment was out of action and to be repaired this week,” the spokesman said. “A second, identical piece failed in service so it was unable to be utilised as an alternative supply method.” Ergon was quick to react, deploying extra crews from the Tablelands, Cairns and as far away as Townsville to assist local operations staff with power restoration.

Ergon crews worked in cooperation with local disaster management teams to co-ordinate power restoration across the district via temporary generation while investigation of a repair to the substation was undertaken. At one stage, more than 40 Ergon staff were on the ground restoring supply, supported by multiple engineering experts in various locations across the state. Also involved in the process were Cooktown State Emergency Service volunteers and Cook Shire Council employees.

Cheryl’s home-ownership dream finally comes true << From Page 1 And the keen gardener intends to plant lots of fruit trees and establish a large garden on her new big block, which is still to be cleared. Cheryl (pictured right) said she was ecstatic when she received the news in December. “I went to the meetings when the possibility of home ownership was announced,” she said. “I put in the applications and hoped.” Once notified, she wasted no time in contacting a builder in Cairns to organise the design of her dream home. And with good luck and good weather, she hopes the building materials will arrive within the next few weeks, and it will be completed around the end of April. So delighted is she in becoming a home owner, she has stepped down from the role as Acting Principal of the Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy, Hope Vale Campus, to that of teacher so that she will have more time to spend on her new home. Mr Newman said approval of the loan for Cheryl’s house is a significant step towards encouraging private home ownership in Indigenous communities. “At present, the vast majority of land within Indigenous communities is owned by the State through Deed of Grant in Trust, which means people living in the communities are denied the right to purchase land and own their own home,” he said. “The Indigenous home-loan program was established to overcome barriers, such as lack of access to financial institutions and services, low incomes, higher construction costs and an absence of residential property markets in rural and remote areas.” He said his government recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Queensland want to own their own homes

“We’ve shifted generators to wherever we’ve thought we needed to, to make life easier without an online power source,” said Cooktown SES Co-ordinator Kym Jerome. For some, the ordeal lasted about 48 hours, but power has since been restored. However, work continues on the problem.A massive transformer, known as The Nomad, has arrived in Cooktown and is being set up inside the sub-station on the corner of Hope and Ida Streets. It will take several days to con-

nect to the Ergon network to feed power into the poles and wires to supply customers over the next few days - particularly Hope Vale. Technicians are hopeful the Nomad’s installation will be completed by Friday, if not earlier, after which they will examine damaged equipment at the Cooktown Substation and commence repair or replacement work. Temporary generators already supplied to Cooktown and Hope Vale will remain in place as a precautionary measure for the time being.

in their communities. “That’s why we recently released a Discussion Paper, Providing freehold title in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, which outlines a range of options to make more freehold land available for Indigenous communities,” he said. “Increasing opportunities for home ownership is just part of the government’s strategy to improve sustainability and self-sufficiency in Indigenous communities. “We are committed to increasing employment opportunities among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Queenslanders, and to helping locals develop the skills they need to manage and grow their own economies. “This government’s approach to addressing Indigenous disadvantage is to create jobs and develop local economies that support home ownership and the creation of small businesses.” He said if jobs can be created, many of the social problems in the community will take care of themselves. “The more employment and business opportunities that can be created in Indigenous communities, the better the chances of dealing with social problems like alcohol and substance misuse and violence towards women and children,” he said.

COMMUNITY

Memories of good times with thoughts on future Story and photo by ERIC GEORGE GLORIA Savage is a longterm resident of Cooktown, and lives with her husband Des in a house with a stunning view over the town and estuary. “I came here in 1963. I came from Georgetown. “We were working at the old Bellevue Guest House in Cairns and Mr Hallam, who owned the Sovereign Hotel, was down there looking for a couple of barmaids and cooks and cleaners, so my friend and I came here.” I asked Gloria to cast her mind back and tell us how she felt as she stepped off the plane for the first time. “I thought if I could get a plane out, I would go back again! It was that windy. I thought, My God - what have we come to? “The Fokker Friendship and the DC3s used to come up here then, whereas now we have only got the little planes.” There were not so many houses in town then? “No, but business-wise, there were three grocery shops in town. There was Savage’s store, Looser’s store, and Pat and Joan Haggerty had a grocery store. “The town used to do things a lot more. They had dances once a month, and the picture theatre used to be twice a week, Wednesday and Saturday night, at the old hall. “Mr and Mrs Chatfield used to run that, and then they sold it to Hans and Faye Looser. Everyone went, and all the people had their own seats. You would not dare to sit in their seat, or you would be in trouble. “We had a lot of fun. In those days everybody knew everybody. “Tuesday was the day the boat came in, bringing fresh fruit and veggies and all that.

And ice cream. Once a week you bought all that sort of stuff, and you survived. “Everyone came into town and went to Looser’s shop for veggies and an ice-cream if there was any there, and went home.” What did Cooktowners do to support themselves? “Much the same as now, bits and pieces. The pearl luggers used to come in, and a lot more prawning boats.” I asked Gloria about the hippies coming to town, and she said they were here all along. “We used to know the police really well then, and, if a strange car came into town that looked suspect, they pulled them up and went through their vehicle. If they found anything, the car was told to leave. It was a good little town - no problems. “It was good. Like the petrol stations, they all borrowed from one another or lent. And the pubs, they would all lend and borrow. “The publicans met every Wednesday and they would have a day out together. If the shop keepers got short of stuff, Looser’s would borrow from Savages, or Haggerty’s - everyone lent and borrowed. “The old Endeavour Inn was started on the side of Looser’s grocery shop, where the Italian is now, and we used to have some good nights there. They would have an Easter Bonnet night. “The West Coast’s night was Halloween, and the Sovereign might have their night, and the Top Pub would have their night. The others closed and everyone went to those nights. It was a really good family sort of thing.” The story of the growth of Cooktown is reflected in the story of the road into town from Cairns. How does Gloria see that?

“We started with trucks in 1965. There was dirt all the way. There were not any bridges then, and the bitumen started at Biboorah. We used to load in Cairns Mondays and Thursdays. “In the Wet, I know one trip in particular took three weeks from Cairns to Cooktown. Coming back, it got caught between the Reedies. “Most times in the Wet we would get a tractor to pull the truck along Lakeland Downs, because they would get stuck. Or we would send a loader to the Reedies to pick up a truck. “We lost two trucks that got washed down the Reedies. We had our share, but you would just battle on and it was a lot of fun.” What does Gloria think of the recent property boom? “House-wise, Cooktown has gone ahead, but businesswise it has gone downhill. Look at the banks. And the newspapers. We got the newspapers early in the morning on the plane because we had regular flights. We have gone ahead, but I reckon we have gone backwards in a lot of ways too.” Gloria is a confirmed grey nomad. She and Des have spent eight years wandering and picking fruit. She has firm ideas about Cooktown and tourism, and the grey nomads’ position in the mix. “The only thing that Cooktown is going to survive on is tourists, isn’t it? Without tourists, there is nothing. We have got to look at improving the place for tourists, as well as locals. “They have done great with Grassy Hill. That is magnificent. They have done good with the skate park for the kids. “The swimming pool should be more central, at Anzac Park or somewhere down there. Fill that land in

Gloria Savage has memories of good times and thoughts on the future. and put kids’ playthings, and barbecues, make it a friendly atmosphere for people. “When we were travelling around, there were a lot of towns smaller than Cooktown and, I tell you what, they provided a lot of stuff for tourists. “They really look after them, so they will go back to those places. “Look at Mareeba now - grey nomads have made Mareeba. “I know people say, oh, they don’t spend any money in the town. “That is garbage. Five or six years ago, we had 13 motor homes down at the stables because they could not get into any caravan park. “We put a bucket inside the door and anyone who bought anything or did anything in town put their dockets in the bucket. “At the end of it, they were added up and $10,500 had been spent by 13 motor homes in three weeks. “It all adds up.”

Spin-offs to town in new projects THE Minister has asked me to congratulate Cooktown on its recent achievement in the Special Education field. After long and exhaustive discussions, a new facility will be built in Cooktown with the full support of government at all levels. This is a great step forward in giving Cooktowners the sort of education appropriate to their needs. We in the Department recognise the strains and stresses of modern life are particularly difficult for country people and it is a great thing that such a large proportion of education funding in Cooktown should be spent this way. Of course, this is not the only project addressing Cooktown’s special needs. Shortly, work will start on your drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre. The Department believes strongly in decentralisation, and building such facilities where they are most needed.

Cooktown to hold first Health and Wellbeing Expo COOKTOWN will host its first “Integrated Health and Wellbeing Expo” at the PCYC Events Centre on Saturday, February 16. Inspiration for the event was first nurtured in August, 2011, when Sandy Jones and Dr Mel Scrace attended a four-day Primary Course at the Gold Coast, presented by the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine. Ms Jones said it was inspirational, with conversations held until the early hours every night, discussing how it could be applied to help the Cooktown community. The idea gained momentum in January, 2012, when they were joined by a large gathering of community members to nurture and implement a shared vision of holistic primary and preventative health care. “It is now an ever-enlarging group of individuals, practitioners and other wise people connecting via email and monthly meetings,” Sandy said. “The mission of the Integrated Health group is ‘To create a harmonious environment of healing and well-being where people are connected, nurtured and informed of their journey towards healthy families and communities’.” “This type of health care is not about temporarily fixing symptoms with pills and patches; it is about people regaining control over their health, taking responsibility for their health and disease,” Dr Scrace said. “Holistic health is about the balance of mind, body and spirit, not just the absence of pharmaceutical

medications. “Many people have problems which simply cannot be helped by our western model of care alone, so we are hoping to integrate complementary therapists into our health system in Cooktown so the primary health care system becomes more holistic in its approach.” Ms Jones said Michelle Hodgkiss was the member responsible for the expo. “We are inviting the community to meet and get to know therapists from all over the Far North (including our very own), to find out more about their healing methods and learn more about how nutrition can influence health and disease,” Sandy said. “It’s all very well to live into your 80s, but who wants to be riddled with arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis or dementia? “Being able to live a healthy life, throughout life is our aim.” Ms Jones said a donation from Cook Shire Council Community Grants Program will help with the provision of the event. “It’s a much-appreciated donation,” she said. Children are welcome to attend the day, which will be one of relaxation and activity, nurturing self and others, learning and sharing and maybe even trying something new. More than 30 stalls promoting selfhealing, healthy lifestyle, sustainable living and more than 18 healing and wellness modalities will be on display on they day. A wide range of health products

100 Years On...

Jinxed ship worked between Cooktown and Melbourne FROM The Brisbane Courier: “Tuesday 14 January 1913, comes the sad tale of a drowning accident, which involved the SS Aramac at Cooktown wharf. ‘ A drowning accident occurred here yesterday afternoon. While the Aramac was approaching the wharf the stern of a boat containing two men was lowered too quickly, and the boat filled with water and turned turtle. One man got clear and swum to shore. The other man, McNeil, hung on for some time, but disappeared before the pilot boat could reach him. McNeil was a brother of the boatswain of the Aramac. Aboriginals have been diving for the body, but without result. The Aramac proceeded on her voyage North this morning.’ As if this was not bad enough, the following week another story about the SS Aramac appeared in The Brisbane Courier, Wednesday 22 January 1913: “Thursday Island, January 21. A man employed at the pilot station at Goode Island put off in a dinghy last night, to take the harbour pilot from the steamer Aramac, which left here about 10 o’clock for Cooktown, although it was ascertained later that a launch accompanied the Aramac for the pilot. The man was found this afternoon at Friday Island, his boat having been lost, and he was brought back in a very exhausted condition to the hospital. He must have been in the water a very long time.”

In researching for more information about the SS Aramac, I unearthed so much about this ill-fated ship, I just had to share it with you here: “The ARAMAC - Steel steamship built by W Denny & Bros, Dumbarton Glasgow for AUSN. December 1889. Built as a passenger ship working the Melbourne - North Queensland trade. Sold to H P Stacey of Sydney, 19th June 1925 and converted into a hulk. Scuttled off Sydney Heads 1929-30. Sistership to Arawatta & Wodonga”. In July 1893, the trouble started for the Aramac when the death of Albert Jonathan Johnson, seaman, was reported. “He was killed by falling from the masthead of the S S Aramac. The evidence of the chief officer was … he was sent aloft to reel a line. When he had readied the top of the mast he lost his hold and fell to the deck.” Then in July 1893, the papers carried the story of an, “EXPLOSION OF DYNAMITE ON BOARD THE S S ARAMAC.” In February 1896, “the vessel was almost helpless in the sea which at the time was running mountains high. The vessel was driven against Bramble Reef, and remained on the reef until some time in the morning when the rising tide enabled her to be floated off.” March 1904, brought the news of another grounding. “About 12 miles off Sandy Cape, she struck the

Breaksea Spit. Learning that water was making in the forehold and engine room, the Captain made for Burnett Heads, running about 20 miles, when the fires went out. They managed to keep her afloat till midday, when the Tinana arrived and towed the Aramac to smooth water, where she was kept afloat without much trouble.” Then on Friday 13 May 1904, the “S S ARAMAC was turning Kangaroo Point on the return journey from the Bay. It was ebb tide, and the steamer experienced a set over towards and touched the rocks near the Customs House, while proceeding to the Eagle Street wharf she collided with the Arrawatta.” In March 1912, “At an early hour this morning, it was found that the coal bunkers of the steamer Aramac were on fire. The fire brigade was summoned and the fire was soon got under. The damage was very slight, little coal being burnt, while the bunker partitions were only slightly burnt.” July 1918 saw Aramac aground once more this time in the Yarra, “The S S Aramac, with mails and passengers for Adelaide, grounded near the mouth of the Yarra today, and lies well into the stone wall, if not partly on it.” She must have had problems in the Yarra as in June 1920, “the ARAMAC strikes the South Wharf, in

Photo submitted. the middle swinging basin, in the Yarra, on May 5, The Aramac arrived here from Brisbane on the morning of May 5, and while the vessel was being turned in the Swinging basin it commenced to move ahead … At about 8.40am the steamer struck the wharf, which was damaged by the collision.” Thankfully for all, the Aramac was scrapped in 1924. Surely thought by many as a very jinxed ship.

PHOTOS: CRAIG HAND

Now Crackers is on his way to Cooktown By MARK ROY LIVING hand-to-mouth on insect

larvae and bandicoot meat with a former headhunting tribe in a remote wilderness in Papua New Guinea might not sound like everybody’s idea of a tropical getaway. Or running for your life along a log-strewn beach chased by a bloodthirsty band of Indonesian traders. Or wading waist-deep in a creek with half a dozen tribesmen in the hope of finding a crocodile for dinner. But for seasoned adventurer and one-man charity dynamo Craig ‘Crackers’ Hand, it just comes with the territory. Crackers, who runs the charity Friends of PNG, is back on the Australian mainland after spending a wild couple of months in the remote village of Sibidiri. And he will be in Cooktown towards the end of February. He describes Cooktown as “one of his favourite places in Australia”. He is due to leave Seisia on Cape York in the next few days, heading to Cooktown. “It’ll take six weeks or so; it’s not race and I want to do some adventuring, fishing, exploring and filming. “But I’m really looking forward to catching up with people there. I have a lot of friends there, and I really like the place.” Crackers conducts school talks during his travels and is more than happy to do so during his stay here. He can be contacted on 0404 283 250, and leave a message as he is frequently out of range, or or email him at handozzy@yahoo.com.au. Crackers set sail for PNG in October last year from Thursday Island in his Little Red Boat to deliver much-needed supplies to the village, including medicines, gardening tools, mosquito nets, clothes and

educational books and sponsorships for school children. He said while some sponsors for the kids came as far away as Germany, schools closer to home were also willing to lend a hand. “The Minjilang school on Croker Island had some laminated drawings and also some books and stationery that they sent in a box to Bamaga Post Office,” he said. “Children on Groote Eylandt sent a number of hats, so I picked them all up and took them over to the tribe and distributed them amongst the school kids there.” While kids in Australia might take their schooling for granted, walking to school took on a different dimension for children in PNG villages, he said. While he was there, a group of students walked home from school on Daru - an unaccompanied, week-long trek through the bush. “There were six kids, one from Sibidiri tribe and others were from various other tribes in that area, but they all shared the trip home,” he said. “They walked for a good week or so, through swamps full of crocodiles and basically jungle trails and made their way home. “Other coastal tribes I talk to can’t believe the kids do that . . . they can’t believe some of the tribes inland do the trips they do.” While in the village, Crackers ran a fishing competition, the second “Sibidiri Classic”. “I brought them hand lines and lures, but some of the villagers still went out with the traditional bowand-arrow,” Crackers said. “The results were about 50/50 for each method, but I awarded third place in the competition to one of the boys for a wallaby he caught with his bow-and-arrow.” Crackers joined in with the day-today activities in the village, including planting yam seedlings, building

a barge to Seisia. “I can’t thank Sea Swift enough,” Crackers said. But the crew did have a laugh at his expense, he admitted. “They picked me up in late December, and told me about the Mayan calendar, and that the end of the world had been predicted for December 21. “I told them I’d heard nothing about it, as I’d been out of touch with civilisation for a couple of months in Sibidiri. “So the crew told me the world had actually come to an end,” Crackers laughed. “They said ‘We’ve been drifting around here for days now, and you’re the first survivor we’ve found.’” “Thanks to the great people of Seisia, T.I., Dauan, Saibai and Boigu for saying ‘G’Day Crackers’,” he said.

CRACKERS owes a debt of graititude to Andrew, Karyn and son Andrew, all from the Palmer River Roadhouse, who looked after him for a “couple of days in September” and to Peter Cochrane for helping him with the Little Red Boat. This is his amazing story. “Most people plan their Cape York trip for a couple of years but, when my boat needed to be taken from Pormpuraaw where Peter Cochrane, the local policeman was looking after it for me, to Stuart McKinnon, the boat mechanic in Weipa.” Here is Crackers’ intinerary: • I flew 4000km from Pormpuraaw to Kowanyama to Cairns and to Darwin all in one day (Monday, September 17, 2012), • Had my birthday on Tuesday and Wednesday with mates in Darwin while putting new rollers and winch on my trailer, • Left Darwin on Thursday and drove 3000km in three days, picking up some chooks for Peter along the way, • Hit a cow and wrote off my car near Palmer River on a Saturday night, • Andrew and Karyn took me in and their son, Evan, was put in charge of the chooks. • I pulled the front end off the car back out somewhere to where it should be on Sunday with some rope tied to a tree, • Ordered new radiator, hoses, three belts, parts, etc from Cairns on Monday to be freighted overnight, • Put them on Tuesday morning, taped up everything loose and was on the road by lunchtime and back to my boat at Peter’s place amd chooks delivered safely by that night, • Winched the Little Red Boat onto the trailer on Wednesday and was at Stuart McKinnon’s in Weipa that night, • Repaired the boat motor by the weekend, and • Then had a weekend off and went in the Weipa Billfish Challenge.

Something that you buy on impulse may lead to regrets later. Stick within your budget, at least for the rest of the week. You’ll reap the benefit later. Romance. If you make the effort to create a romantic atmosphere at home, you will not be disappointed. Try to keep things simple.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) You may be feeling a little restless because other people are not quite as “hyped” up as you. It is up to you to motivate everybody else! Romance. Keeping hammerheads out of the haul SPECIAL fishing weights could take a bite out of endangered hammerhead shark deaths, sciencemag.org reports. The global population of these distinctive sharks has fallen by about 89% in the last two decades, largely due to illegal poaching and accidental fishing bycatch. But now, scientists have come up with a shocking way to reduce this collateral damage, generating a mild electric field near fishing lines to keep the sharks away. Coastal shark species like hammerheads use electrically sensitive organs in their snouts to navigate and

find prey in murky nearshore waters. So to help save the sharks, marine biologists took advantage of this, attaching pieces of rare-earth lanthanide metals-specifically, neodymium and praseodymium-to longline fishing gear in place of typical lead weights. The lanthanides produce an electric field in water that seemed to repel the sharks, the team reports this month in Fisheries Research. Test lines in Hawaii caught less than half as many endangered scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) pups as lines without the metals, the researchers report.

ABORIGINAL and Torres Strait Islander artists are being urged to apply for up to $10,000 in funding to grow and market their art. Up to $10,000 is avail-

Indigenous arts grants available

Open ocean shark species, which appear to rely on other senses to find prey, were not affected, they found. And at least for some commonly fished species including halibut and tuna, the electric fields didn’t impact catch rates. The strategy could help preserve hammerhead sharks in many coastal fisheries-but there is a downside, the researchers note. Lanthanide metals are costly and difficult to work with, and as they dissolve relatively quickly in water, the weights would need to be replaced periodically by fishers.

New look for Lakeland playground

WITH CLARE RICHARDS

Perfect time for shift in diet

Lakeland playground has a new soft-fall surface. The new surface replaces the sand soft-fall and will provide a cleaner, safer play area and reduce blockages in the Community Hall drains. A small area of sand has been retained so children can still play in a sand pit. The Lakeland playground surface upgrade is a joint initiative of Cook Shire Council and the Queensland Government. Photo submitted.

700-passenger cruise ship to visit Cooktown ACCORDING to a Cook Shire Council spokeswoman, a cruise ship carrying 700 passengers will provide great opportunities for local businesses when it anchors off Cooktown on Thursday, January 31. The spokeswoman said 500 of the passengers have already booked on tours with our local bus company and a bus company from Cairns. On a cruise from Sydney to Singapore, it will be the first time the 230m, Voyager will visit Cooktown. The ship will anchor off and passengers will be ferried to and from the Cooktown Wharf between 8am and 4pm.

THE combination of heat and post-Christmas regret for excessive consumption make this a perfect time to shift the diet to lots of salads and light foods. One great accompaniment to salads that makes for a great meal is patties. You can make up a big batch and use the remainders the following day for lunch. To manage the busy week, I also hold off dressing a salad in the bowl and drizzle dressing onto each individual plate. This way any leftover salad will be fine to use for your lunch the next day. Here’s a simple patty, great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I serve these with a big green salad, and some condiment such as a chilli sambal or chutney. Use whatever leafy green vegetables, beans, etcetera you have growing in the garden or tucked away in the fridge, and likewise with the choice of herbs. Makes

about eight ricotta cakes. Ricotta cakes 130g (2/3 cup) ricotta 4 eggs 2/3 cup finely chopped greens Good pinch of salt 12 grinds black pepper 1 teaspoon finely diced chilli 2 slices fresh bread, crusts removed, roughly torn 1 tablespoon finely diced fresh herbs (I use Cuban Oregano, also called Five Spice up here) 2 small cloves garlic, crushed Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and mix until well combined. To form cakes, place spoonfuls of the mixture into egg rings on a lightly oiled flat grill or frying pan and cook on a moderate heat until browned on both sides. Run a knife around inside of egg rings to remove, and serve.

Another deadly canister found at Knob Point SILVER canisters, which are being found washed up on Queensland beaches, contain a deadly substance and must not be touched or examined by untrained personnel. Cooktown Police report that one of the canisters was found at Knob Point a couple of weeks ago, but was not handed in until last Friday. If anyone finds one of these canisters (pictured), DO NOT TOUCH it, but IMMEDIATELY call Triple Zero (000) report its location. The canisters are described as being approximately 30cm high and 15cm in diameter and contain Aluminium Phosphide, which could be fatal if inhaled or ingested. Aluminium Phosphide is a colorless, flammable and toxic gas. Mild exposure by inhalation causes indefinite feeling of sickness, ringing in the ears, fatigue, nausea

and pressure in the chest which is relieved by getting away from the gas and getting fresh air. It is a a highly restricted toxic substance used in the eradication of vermin on vessels. Cooktown Local News believes this latest find brings the number found locally to four. The Queensland Police Service is warning members of the public that if they see a canister on the beach, that they must not inspect, open or transport it and ensure they stand well away from it. If anyone sees any canister remotely similar to that pictured, they must call TRIPLE ZERO immediately. Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24 hours a day.

Smile: You’re on security camera WEIPA Police were called to a break and enter offence early on the morning of Wednesday, January 9, where two offenders had entered underneath a unit and helped themselves to all of the alcohol stored in a fridge, stubby coolers and even the loose change left on the table. How do Police know all this? We l l , i m a g i n e t h e i r delight as they got to sit back and watch it all unfold on a high quality CCTV security camera system that had only very recently been supplied and installed by a local supplier. Detective Sergeant O’Keefe, the Officer In Charge of Weipa CIB, said: “The picture quality was absolutely fantastic; there was absolutely no mistake as to the identity of these two offenders. “It is indeed very pleasing to see locals taking appropriate security measures for their premises against these types of criminals. “I am very pleased to learn

that quite a few residents have now gone to the trouble and expense to install high quality security surveillance systems to arm themselves against these criminals, Detective Sergeant O’Keefe said. “Recently, we were able to quickly solve a number of break and enter offences utilising security cameras installed around the Weipa Town Authority, and the cameras around the Weipa Police Station. “These cameras also extend out and capture a fair bit of the surrounding area which has helped us investigate and solve offences.” It will be alleged that at about 12.35am, two offenders were caught redhanded, walking underneath the carport of the dwelling and looking through personal belongings before they opened the outside fridge door and made a fairly substantial discovery. The crooks then removed all the alcohol from the fridge and left, only to return a few

minutes later and try their luck for some more property. Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins, the Officer In Charge of Weipa Police, said: “Locals are really kidding themselves if they think Weipa is what it used to be as far as criminal behaviour goes. “I should know, the days of leaving keys in cars, cars unlocked and failing to take minimal and adequate security measures in and around the home are long gone for Weipa. “Chances are you may get away with it for a little while, but you’ll eventually become a victim if you think it won’t happen to you!” Tw o o ff e n d e r s h a v e been arrested and charged and will appear before the Weipa Magistrate’s Court this month. Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins expressed his sincere appreciation for the valued assistance, throughout this investigation, provided by Des McGrath, the owner and manager of Pieces Security at Evans Landing.

KING tides. Spectacular natural events, if you know how and where to enjoy them. This last week, we had six mornings when the tides were around, or above, three metres. The Muller family group from Melbourne were among the few fortunate locals and visitors in the know that rushed the beaches and National Parks boardwalks in the region to capture freakish photographic images and absorb indelible memories of the effect of the king tides. They also enjoyed Wujal Wujal Falls with Francis Walker and the sight of thousands of marching soldier crabs on the beaches. Without a doubt, the Marrja and Dubuji boardwalks above the Daintree River were the most spectacular places to witness the king tides, because they are among very diverse mangrove habitats. They are probably the best places in the entire Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, actually - or Queensland - or Australia. We’re lucky. We have it on our own doorstep. Mangroves, orchids and vines nestled just above and even below the waterline. Fish (archers, mangrove jacks and many others) swam around, feeding on unaccustomed hard-to-reach food sources. Amazing reflections of mangroves, insects, epiphytic ferns, leaves and blue sky on the still waters. And, of course, the crabs and bubble action as the tide moved in and out around the peak high tide. Hours of wonder. The beaches were good too, with swollen seas at Thornton’s Beach lapping among the beach hibiscus, sea lettuce trees and visitors’ feet. Brand new natural and man made flotsam. Tent or dome spiders are always interesting, as their webs are quite distinctive. We finally managed to get a clear shot of this dome spider on Christmas Day. Technically, the dome spider belongs to the orb -web spiders, but its web is clearly tent-like and non-sticky. It has a distinct central peak where the spider hides with threads above and below the dome. It’s normal to see several domes in the one area, as we did on this occasion. The spider mostly hangs upside down, like this one. The Bloomfield Track has been in good condition with lovely running creek water throughout. Tides have dropped and should pose no problems except with heavy rain. It looks like the rains will build up now, but so far things have looked great and been safe. The next king tide grouping is from February 8 to 13. And remember, for every high tide, there is a low tide about six hours later. That’s the best time for beach walking, and seeing crab action and artwork. Happy travelling. Be ready for weather changes

ABOVE: Jessi Darvell’s trip to the Great Unchartered Reef on the weekend brought both good and bad luck for the young angler. Good in the way she had no trouble landing two coral trout, but bad in that they were both undersized and had to be released. Photo submitted.

TRUE to form, the weather is being unpredictable, so be ready to head out at short notice. With the changes coming either a day early, a day late or not at all, anglers who get it right will clean up. Last week was a classic example, with the break coming in early resulting in most missing the opportunity. Offshore fishing has been hit and miss with some cleaning up. Chatting to the anglers who got it right - it’s about being in the right place at the right time. The first bait that hit the bottom was slammed by a solid red and each bait thereafter resulted in a solid fish, while other groups spent many hours with only a few fish in the esky, having to move around and cover many miles to eventually find a patch of willing fish to save the night. There is still a good number of Endeavour prawns in the Endeavour River making for a tasty feed and excellent bait. Large numbers of queenfish, trevally and mangrove jacks have also kept anglers busy. There have been a few squid around the Wharf, while mangrove jacks and trevally have been landed from there in the last week too. Deep snags with live prawns will flush out whatever is living in the depths, but be ready for a solid bite as prawns are deadly baits. And we are all waiting for some decent rain to stir up those mub crabs. The 7-day forecast is not looking great for the weekend, but this time of year it changes significantly every day, so just watch that forecast and be ready. Tight lines Russell Bowman The Lure Shop

Busy Soggy contracts ‘hitman’ to lay Hash THIS week’s Hash run was hosted by Soggy from her house on the hill. Now anyone who knows Soggy knows that when she is not sleeping, she is working. She was particularly busy this week and just could not find time to lay the trail herself, so she contracted the job out to Moses (who always does whatever pretty ladies tell him to). The shredded paper (Moses’ favourite trail setting device) started off downhill, because everywhere is downhill from Soggy’s place. Unfortunately, a new mansion is being erected next to the trail and half the pack decided to stop and have a sticky beak at it. The serious Hashers continued into the bush, pushing through some tangles to find three piece of orange tape tied to a twig - a check,

meaning a break in the trail, with the real trail lying somewhere within a hundred metres. F*&t led everyone off in the wrong direction, but Hotdog eventually found the proper trail and we were off again down South Street. At the racecourse, the pack was faced with shredded paper heading in two directions around the track and, to a man, set off in the false direction. The correct way went around the side of the racecourse and on to the back of the cemetery. Whichever way you chose to return home, you had to climb back up Soggy’s hill and the pack dribbled in tired and thirsty. Even the nosy people who stopped at the new house got back eventually, although goodness knows where they had been. Thermo was back in her stride

as GM, celebrating good looking numbers of runs for Soggy and Yoyo, Xtraktit taking a tumble, and Stumble’s abysmal singing. And making plans for our 1560th run which is coming up soon. That is 60 cartons of runs, a remarkable figure. Next week’s run is at Whizz and Matchbox’s, and will be celebrating Burns Night, so wear some tartan and get ready for HAGGIS! And possibly some Highland games as well. Just turn up at 5.30 on Monday, January 21 to join the fun. Call Moses on either 4069 5854 or 0409 686 032 for details. On-on! Lye Bak

Cooktown remains dry in highest tide

ABOVE LEFT: Cooktown Wharf remained well clear of Saturday’s tide, the highest predicted for 2013. RIGHT: Cooktown’s floating pontoon stayed just above the high tide.

SATURDAY’S high tide of 3.4m, the highest predicted for 2013, failed to live up to the expectations of some locals. Some forecast that Adelaide Street could be inundated between the floating pontoon, behind the two parks and down past the Historical Society’s back yard. However, the 9.47am peak only produced a couple of inches lapping across Adelaide Street behind the His-

tory Centre through to the Bowls Club. A couple of daredevils were reported to be ignoring crocodile warning signs and taking a dip in the Endeavour River to celebrate the occasion. And this on the back of a yachtie’s report a croc took a barramundi just a metre off the stern of his boat, which is anchored not far from shore. When will they learn?
