Cape Heritage delay ‘welcome’

Lakefield National Park. CAPE York Sustainable Futures Treasurer Bob Sullivan has welcomed the news the World Heritage protection for Cape York nomination will be delayed by at least a year. “I guess it highlights the Federal Government’s indecent haste to get a nomination in by the due time,” Mr Sullivan said from Cooktown on Tuesday. “And it also highlights the total lack of proper consultation in the initial nomination bid.” Mr Sullivan, who is a former Cook Shire Mayor and past President of CSYF, last year referred to the federal government’s insistence on dealing only with Traditional Owners as “clandestine”. He hailed the delay as a victory to CSYF. “It’s definitely a win for us in being able to engage in a campaign which has delayed the nomination until a

proper consultation with all of the people of Cape York can be made,” he said. The delay arose after the Federal Government missed a United Nations deadline to submit a nomination. Labor had pledged it would get the consent from traditional Aboriginal owners before submitting a World Heritage nomination to the UN, but has yet to obtain formal consent to include key sites needed for a credible nomination. The government had initially hoped to meet a February 1 deadline for consideration of the nomination in 2013, and significant work had been put in by the Environment Department and scientific advisers to prepare the submission. A nomination can still be submitted before this year’s federal election, but it will now not be considered until 2014, and possibly 2015, meaning a

delay to potential international recognition for Cape York’s rainforests, wetlands and Indigenous cultural sites. Cape York Sustainable Futures chief executive officer Trish Butler said the government’s failure to meet the February 1 deadline was a “reprieve” and that the World Heritage listing issue would obviously have to be addressed again in the future. “What the people of Cape York clearly want is consultation that involves everyone. Everyone wants to be given the opportunity to voice their opinion,” Mrs Butler said The Wilderness Society said the missed deadline had significant implications for Cape York, with several major mining projects on the horizon. Member for Cook David Kempton applauded the people of Cape York for their efforts in getting the message to

Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke that ignoring the large and vocal dissenting group had subsequently failed to achieve the requisite support. Mrs Butler said it was important that the people of Cape York understood what was at stake as the long-term economic benefits of World Heritage Listing were yet to be proven. “It’s about losing control and the price is their freedom,” she said. “If we don’t take responsibility UNESCO will. It’s up to the people of Cape York to determine what is best for their land rather than someone from across the other side of the world.” Wilderness Society’s Gavan McFadzean said the government had failed to put up even a ‘’tentative listing’’ - a preliminary step towards a full World Heritage nomination - that would have at least meant the submission would be considered in 2014.

Instead he said consideration would be pushed back to 2015. Mr Kempton said: “The issue is not about whether there are any areas worthy of World Heritage listing in Cape York, but rather that the decision to list should be made by the people of the Cape in collaboration with government and not by an ill-informed federal minister. Mr Kempton said: “It is no longer good enough to throw money to a non-representative organisation to ‘consult ‘with a select few to achieve a predetermined outcome on World Heritage,” “That the elected mayors of many communities, traditional owners, cattlemen, miners, tourist operators, business people and long-term residents of Cape York were united in their stance against a process that would have seen even more of Cape York locked up is commendable.”

Regional issues on the table as election is announced The Gillard Government will continue to deliver important reforms during the year. - Jan McLucas FEDERAL members of both major parties in Far North Queensland have welcomed the call by Prime Minister Julia Gillard for a federal election on Saturday, September 14. Queensland Senator Jan McLucas said the announcement provided “certainty”. “I’m sure residents and businesses will welcome that,” Ms McLucas said. “The Gillard Government will continue to deliver important reforms during the year. “We will see the National Disability Insurance Scheme become real in our launch sites across the country, we’ll deliver action on our National School Improvement Plan that will see standards rise in all our schools and we’ll continue to see the National Broadband Network being rolled out. “I’m sure people want the year ahead to be dominated by

policy debate and not more of the negativity we saw last year. “2013 presents some great opportunities for us here in Far North Queensland and also nationally.” Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch also welcomed the news, saying he was looking forward to locking in firm policy commitments that would benefit the Far North. “The timing couldn’t be better, given that the Coalition has just announced its positive plan to build a strong and prosperous economy, and a safe and secure Australia,” Mr Entsch said. “From talking to people all around the electorate, I know that they want a change - and having a date now confirmed means that our plan can start working from day one.” Speaking from Russia, where he is representing Australia at the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary

Forum, Mr Entsch said his focus during the next eight months would be on locking in policy commitments on issues such as: a solution to the property insurance crisis; establishment of the Tropical Campus of the Australian Institute of Sport and related infrastructure; ongoing upgrades to the Bruce Highway; supporting the creation of a new meeting and entertainment precinct in Port Douglas alongside the lagoon and waterfront redevelopment; the sustainable, multiple use of our oceans and waterways, particularly in regard to the Coral Sea Marine park; and fighting the proposed blanket World Heritage Listing of Cape York. Mr Entsch has again asked when Labor would announce their candidate for Leichhardt. “Julia Gillard has taken the unprecedented step of announcing the date of the election, yet Labor

still doesn’t have anybody to stand for the Far North,” Mr Entsch said. “This again demonstrates how Labor doesn’t have a plan; their announcements are on the hop and they haven’t even got their candidates lined up before the start of what is essentially an eight-month election campaign.” Mr Entsch has held the seat from 1996-2007 and was reelected in 2010. He did not seek re-election at the 2007 poll when it was won by Labor’s Jim Turnour. Leichhardt covers an area of approximately 148 988 sq km from the Torres Strait Islands in the north to Bentley Park in the south. Family’s mission will be adventure of a lifetime COOKTOWN’S Attard family, Jason, Toni, “Charlie” and Kasey, will soon embark on the adventure of their lives when they move to Lae, Papua New Guinea. The young family will live as missionaries, while Jason will assume a role as a Vocational Training Manager - teaching and co-ordinating willing participants in a trade at the Lae City Mission. While they will live in a rent-free, partially furnished house, they will receive no wage during their one to two-year stay, relying on their savings and donations from anyone generous enough to help them in the work they want to do. “Both Toni and I have agreed that this is a God given opportunity to serve and share His Word with these young men and fulfil a vision to grow skilled, successful, Christ driven leaders into the communities,” Jason said. Toni said she was very supportive of Jason’s new role. Continued Page 4 >>

Cooktown directory generates $10,000 for the School P&C

COOKTOWN State School Parents and Citizens’ Association was pleased to receive a $10,000 donation this week from Cooktown Local News. This is the second year that the P&C has received such a donation and is the result of an agreement between the P&C and Cooktown Local News for the production of the 2013 Cooktown Business and Community Directory. P&C President Nikki Darvell said the donation would be put to good use towards a project which will eventually see the primary school playgrounds fitted with permanent shade structures. “We’ve had quotes between $80,000 - $100,000 for the job, so we’ve still got to find a lot more money, but shade sails aren’t really suited for the purpose, she said. “They get ripped and end up with holes in them and they have to be taken down and put up again and it’s all a bit much with only one grounds person to do the job. She said materials from the disused shade sails will be put to good use. “We’re going to use the pillars that

Jason’s new Wrole has evolved from EL COOCOME TO KTO his acceptance of an earlier WN invitation to assist in building a new house for the expanding needs on the Suambu Plantation. He said the plantation originally operated as an exotic fruit plantation, but is now home to some 140 young men, plus staff and their families. “These young boys and men aged from as young as 13 years, enter the mission looking for an escape and shelter from their troubled lives of stealing, abuse and abandonment by their families, he said. “Here, opportunity to share the forgiveness and love of our Lord Jesus is given and lives are being transformed, giving them a new hope and future. “As I worked alongside these boys, I heard their stories of survival and my heart was touched at their willingness to learn and make a new future for themselves and their country. “Their scars both physically, emotionally and spiritually run deep, but it was amazing to see the joy of the Lord rising up and working inside of them. He said the young men who enter into the mission program are given the Keable

held up the sails to make seating for the students, she said. “That way, they’ll have something to sit on in the shade. On this year’s edition of the P&C Directory, Mrs Darvell said she was pleased with the strong support shown by local businesses. “I think it’s great, there seems to be more locals advertising in it this year, she said. And as a small company owner advertising in the Directory, Mrs Darvell said advertising in the local phone book had worked for her. “We’ve definitely had great success with the advertising we have in the Directory, she said. Cooktown Local News Publisher Corey Bousen said he was pleased to again be contributing $10,000 to the local P&C. “Not only is the P&C Directory a great fundraiser, but we’ve been able to publish the highest quality, full-colour phone book that was, for the first time this year, distributed free-of-charge to the local readers of the Cooktown Local News, he said.

opportunity to work in the day-to-day operations of the plantation, along with classes in literacy, numeracy, agriculture, building and other such opportunities. So when a second invitation was received to return in a new role, Jason jumped at the opportunity. The family is busily packing in readiness for the arrival of a shipping container in which they will stack their worldly possessions in readiness for their February 24 departure. But they are hoping there will be some space in the container to include donated furniture which will assist the mission and families in Lae. And they are hoping the Cooktown community might be able to assist with furniture donations, along with some financial support, eitheer immediate or ongoing. He said both the Cooktown Community Church and Cooktown’s Baptist Church had been very supportive. “The two churches in Cooktown are working in together, but being only small churches their support will be limited, he said. “We’ve been very fortunate to have already received some donations. Jason said support could be given in one of two ways: either by contributing on a monthly support basis or making a one-off donation towards their daily living costs; or contributing a one-off donation towards the purchase of training literature, tools and equipment for the trade school. Newman confirms end to ‘stolen wages’ payments ‘A kick in the guts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders owed money.’’ By ALF WILSON AN Indigenous Social and Well Being Councillor for Stolen Wages claimants has received a letter on January 24, signed by Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, confirming that no more outstanding money will be paid to claimants, and says it is a kick in the guts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who are owed money. But it took Mr Newman almost three months to answer a letter sent by Townsville-based Genevieve Meldrum. Thursday Island-born Ms Meldrum sent her letter, dated October 31, to Mr Newman asking if outstanding Stolen Wages would be paid to elderly claimants. A reply dated January 22 and signed by Mr Newman reached Ms Meldrum two days later. (The Cooktown Local News has seen the letter.) “This is a kick in the guts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders owed money. “People around the State are owed money

and are dying before they get it. There are 17 islands in the Torres Strait and most of them would have people owed Stolen Wages. “My own dad and brothers worked on a peanut farm on T.I. until they were evacuated to Cherbourg during World War II. They were owned Stolen Wages,” Ms Meldrum said. Ms Meldrum said the sad thing about the nonpayment of claims is that many elderly people owed money would die without having received it. “Of the estimated 400 claimants from the Torres Strait more than 250 have died without getting all or some of their Stolen Wages,” she said. The Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) has pressured the State Government to pay all outstanding claims. A Townsville-based Union spokesman told Cooktown Local News that the letter from the Premier addressed to Ms Meldrum had arrived by post on January 24. The Stolen Wages is a campaign conducted by

the Queensland Council of Unions to seek the full payment of the promised reparations of $55.4m for wages withheld from Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander workers for decades of the last century

NEW survey data, collected by Choice, highlights a gap between the current Country of Origin (CoO) food-labelling system and the standard required to ensure consumers can make informed decisions. Results of the Choice survey of more than 700 members who regularly shop for food for their household show understanding of CoO labels is poor, and that the absence of clear definitions leaves consumers ill-informed about where their food actually comes from. Of the respondents, only 12 per cent were able to accurately identify the meaning of “Made in Australia”, while only three per cent knew the correct definition of “Made in Australia from local and imported ingredients”. Foods labelled “Product of Australia” didn’t fare much bet-

ISN’T it fun to sit up here on Cape York, with dry feet, and watch the television tell us how the folks down south are suffering from a bit of weather? I know I shouldn’t be complacent - after all, having your house flooded is no fun at all. Still, there is that sneaking feeling of ‘hee-hee, it’s about time they copped it for a change’. Mind you, I doubt if the residents of Kowanyama feel like that. In fact, he has just released his new plan for not sealing any more roads in Cape York. Well, thanks for that. I do hope he’s getting his feet wet as I write. I think he might be punishing us, because he came to Cooktown airport recently and none of Cooktown’s worthy citizens were there to greet him. In fact, the only people who bothered with him at all were a bunch of enraged nurses protesting his health care cuts. A word of advice, Oberfüh-

process, and the negative environmental impacts associated with overseas products. Conversely, one of the most-widespread reasons cited for buying an overseas product instead of an Australian one was the reputation of that country or region for a particular type of food. This was also a frequently cited reason for favouring a local product over a foreign one, along with the desire to support Australian farmers, keep local manufacturing jobs and support Australian companies. The survey also found knowing the origin of food is more important for fresh food and less so for processed foods.

Despite this poor understanding, 85 per cent of respondents said it was crucial or very important for them to be able to identify if the food they buy has been grown in Australia. Why buy Australian? While a third of survey respondents said they always buy Australian food when available, 62 per cent said they try to buy Australian but their decision depends on factors including the type of food and price. Of those who aim to buy Australian instead of imported food, popular reasons for doing so include the better overall quality, less exposure to chemicals and pesticides during the production

d e 100 Years On... Cairns 1913 weather facilities described as ‘rubbish’ THE people of Cairns were upset. A cyclone had just past their way and they didn’t get enough warning. Of course, in 1913 there were no satellites, radars, computers or TV. Telephone was around, but very few people used them. Most people relied on the written word to get their messages, mail, telegram or newspaper. There could sometimes be days between something happening and people finding out. Now we have so many ways to keep ourselves informed, it is hard to keep up. In 1913, the people of Cairns were calling for change. Below is the story from the Cairns Post, Thursday, February 13 1913: CAIRNS & THE CYCLONE AREA “For a long time it has been recognised that the facilities existing at Cairns for foretelling tropical disturbances, and making known the approach of cyclonic storms, which have caused so much devastation and havoc in the past, to say: nothing of the loss of many human lives, are simply disgraceful, obsolete, and absurd. Many prominent residents have discussed this matter, feeling that something should be done to improve the state of affairs at present existing, but so far no definite move has been made in the direction of approaching the commonwealth government with strong representations. What is the position? At the Cairns Post Office there are an alleged set of instruments for meteorological

purposes, and daily readings are taken of these for the purpose of supplying the Brisbane Weather Bureau with data for the formulation of forecasts. This wonderfully composite set of instruments consists of a barograph and a barometer, also a rain gauge. The two former are poked away somewhere in the telegraph room, whilst the gauge is in the Post Office yard. This, in effect is what Cairns is blessed with for the foretelling of tropical disturbances of a highly dangerous nature, such as experienced quite recently when the greatest peril to those both ashore and afloat existed. These instruments are read by the officials of the Post and Telegraph Department, and whatever the conclusions be they arrive at, are telegraphed to Brisbane. Then a forecast is issued, and if the truly wonderful telegraph service is in working order, a forecast is wired back, and it is stuck in the vestibule of the Cairns Post Office some times 12 hours or more later, after the

date has been telegraphed from here. It will be apparent from the for going that the needs and requirements of North Queensland in general, and Cairns in particular, in the matter under review, are being neglected in a disgraceful and deplorable manner. The urgency of prompt weather warnings cannot be too strongly emphasised, because it means in many cases the saving or destruction of human lives, and with a view to stirring up the apparent livery lethargy of the federal government this ‘’Post” is glad to lend any assistance towards bringing about an improvement in what is admittedly a very bad state of affairs. It is hoped the Local Authority of the town and district will also throw their weight into movement having for its object the installment of a set of up-to- date meteorological instruments at Cairns, and that these be placed not under the jurisdiction of the Post Office, but in charge of the Harbor Master, who is an expert in connection with weather matters, and who

can determine accurately the result of the data forthcoming from observations. Yesterday morning, when chatting with Captain Sunter, of the Adelaide Coy’s steamer Wollowra, a “Post” representative, introduced the above subject, and asked master mariner’s opinion on the existing facilities at Cairns for forecasting the weather, and the general system is vague. “I think your facilities are simply rubbish,” was the reply of Captain Sunter emphatically. In conclusion, Captain Sunter expressed the hope that something would be done with the view of establishing a meteorological station here. and that in the future there would be better facilities for the determining of weather conditions than by the present obsolete method now in vogue.” So now in 2013, we have just experienced the first rain for the season, our roads were cut and we had no papers getting through. However, everyone remained well-informed through social media, radio and TV - as long as the power stayed on!

MOSQUITOES It is that time of the year again. As the wet season arrives so do the mosquitoes. Residents are advised to check once a week (why not when you take your rubbish out?) for potential mosquito breeding sites. Tip out, flush out, discard or dry store any containers capable of holding water, such as: pot plant bases and self watering pot-plants; vases; buckets; tarpaulins and black plastic; toys; old tyres; boats and trailers; tin cans and plastic containers; roof guttering; rainwater tanks and septic tanks with damaged or missing screens; birdbaths; drain sumps; fallen palm fronds; coconut shells; etc. It is also a good idea to use plug-in mosquito zappers, coils, and use surface spray under tables, chairs and beds for the prevention of diseases carried by mosquitoes in the home. For further enquiries please contact Council’s Environmental Health Officer on 4069 5444. Stephen Wilton Chief Executive Officer 24 January 2013

NEW TEACHERS KEEN FOR NEW CHALLENGES COOKTOWN State School’s new teachers were officially welcomed to the school at its first parade for the year at the Events Centre on Friday morning. New Principal Leanne Rayner led the parade, which was also addressed by Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott who presented the new teachers with welcome packs. But Mrs Rayner is no stranger to Education Queensland in Cooktown, having held high administrative and teaching positions since her arrival in 2004, so she is more than wellqualified to take up the challenges that face her. Some of these roles have included: Teaching Head of Department, a

member of the Board of Success for Cooktown, Hope Vale State School Principal between 2007 and 2009, Cluster Principal in 2010, Principal Education Officer for School Improvement for 18 months between 2011 and 2012 and Cluster Principal from mid-2012. Joining Mrs Rayner as one of the new chiefs at the school is Cindy Seden, who said her promotion to Deputy Principal of the Secondary School is not only a promotion, but a new challenge she has sought and on which she intends to thrive. An educator with 32 years experience, Ms Seden’s last posting was at Bentley Park College in Cairns. However, she is no stranger to

Cooktown either, having spent two stints totalling four years as an Education Queensland consultant in the district. Originally from Thursday Island, she is a keen angler who lists volley ball, bead making and other crafts as her means of relaxation. Primary HPE teacher Antony Owen hails from the Gold Coast where he “used” to be a surfer. “I can’t see myself trying to do too much of that up here,” he laughed. Also a keen football (soccer) player, Antony listed anything to do with sports amongst his hobbies. Jessica Clarke, who arrived in Cooktown last year, is another new teacher with her roots on the Gold

Coast. A science and HPE teacher, Jessica said she is enthusiastic about keeping fit and listed netball, and running amongst the things she enjoyed doing in her spare time. Another new teacher to have left a prime south coast location is Monique Bidois. Hailing from Noosa, Monique has been a teacher for five years and is the new Year 7 teacher. Her hobbies include anything to do with the outdoors. Michael and Roslyn Serginson bring a family atmosphere to the school in coming to Cooktown. Formerly from Longreach, Michael is a maths, science and senior biology teacher, while Roslyn will assume the role as Special Ed teacher.

Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott gave Cooktown State School’s new teachers welcome packages at the school assembly on Friday. Here he is seen ready to present Monique Bidois with her package as she addresses the school assembly.

As a family, Michael and Roslyn like to take their children, Mia, 8, Christian 6 and Olivia, 4, on camping and fishing trips. Katherine in the Northern Territory is the former home of Year 5-6 teacher, Mitchell Rowe. Mitch joins his colleagues in the pursuit of fitness as an Iron Man and triathlon competitor. Drama and sport teacher Louise Prowd isn’t quite a “new” teacher, having arrived mid-year in 2012. And she hasn’t wasted any time in involving herself in her love of swimming, by helping out with the Cooktown Swimming Club last year. Louise came from Centenary in Brisbane to take up her role in Cooktown.

THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE CAPE TIMES By LIBBY FIELDING State Library of Queensland LAST month (January) the John Oxley Library was pleased to accept a somewhat unusual donation. The donation was out of the ordinary - and particularly appreciated - not just because it consisted of a small run of a Queensland newspaper not already held by the State Library, but because of this title’s geographical coverage. The Cape Times, a largely forgotten monthly newspaper based in Cairns and published only between 1983 and, it appears,1985, had a singular point of distinction: it was, as it declared in a number of its issues, “the only publication that circulate throughout the entire Gulf of Carpentaria, Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait Islands”. Delivered to its readers courtesy of Cape York Air Services and Air Queensland, its brief was to serve the Gulf and Cape York Peninsula and to publish for “all of the major communities - European, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islanders - as well as the stations and homesteads” within the area of its reach. Begun on a “shoe-string budget” by a husband and wife team and initially offering free, local advertising space, it was able to boast by mid-1984 that its print run had been increased to 7000 issues. The Library’s recently acquired holdings consist of nine issues published in 1983 and 1984 - and to our knowledge the only other institution in possession of the Cape Times - in this instance a single issue - is the National Library of Australia. As a library acquisition, the paper’s particular value is that, leaving aside the Torres News (which is distributed across the inhabited islands of the Torres Strait and the five communities of the Northern Peninsula area) and the Western Cape Bulletin (whose distribution covers the mining and indigenous communities of Western Cape York Peninsula) and the Cooktown Local News, there is limited newspaper coverage of the vast Cape area beyond Cooktown The other significant point of interest is the period in which this rather idiosyncratic publication briefly reflected the social, political and commercial environment of its times. The paper began its life in the year the coalition between the state Liberal and National

Parties was dissolved, when a subsequent election resulted in a sixth consecutive term for the Bjelke-Peterson led National Party and soon afterwards, a majority National Party government. It was the same year Bob Hawke defeated the incumbent federal Coalition Government led by Malcolm Fraser. It was also the year a historic attempt by environmental activists to blockade the Daintree Rainforest to prevent the construction of a road through the forest wilderness was intercepted by the Queensland Police. The Cape Ti m e s i s a n eclectic mix of local humour (some amateur p o e t r y, c a r toons, tall tales, stories about larger than life “characters” like Wild Bill To o h e y a n d Batavia Bill), accounts of life in the Gulf and Cape York (pearling, fishing, “wreck diving”, the School of the Air, the banana prawn industry, the experience of a “Gulf cop”), historical snapshots (the Aboriginal shellmounds near Weipa, the arrival of the

first Christian missionaries in the Torres Strait in 1871, the building of the NormantonCroydon railway) and articles which reflect topical issues of the day (the legacy of established hippie communities, the options for achieving economic independence in the Gulf and Peninsula, the case for and against rainforest logging). Among other pieces which define this paper as being quintessentially about its physical territory are articles on the quarantine extension in the Cape York area, the pilots o f t h e To r r e s Strait Islands, the Croydon rodeo, Cedar Bay Bill (and his now legendary association with a hippie commune in the seventies), Aboriginal activist Mick Miller, a diary of (and purportedly found on) a “dope patch” north of Cairns, the lost gold reefs of Cape York, an interview with the Pandora Reef ’s drivemaster and an account of the associated recovery operation - and histories of the Cape Tribulation protest blockade and the Hope Vale Lutheran Mission at Cooktown. Offsetting

advertisements for commercial enterprises such as shipping transport in the Gulf and Cape, custom built homes, waterbeds, real estate, Cape York safaris and ultralight planes designed for mustering cattle - there is a tilt, on some of the Cape Times’s pages, toward the notion of self sufficiency, alternative lifestyles and an environmental awareness which reflects the surviving optimism of the early eighties. You could pick up advice, for instance, on the growing of leguminous species or fruit trees on the Cape or about alternative health remedies, aerobics eighties style or Cape York specific gardening hints. There is also an instructive piece-by-bush tucker man, Captain Les Hiddons, on the subject of survival skills in the wilds of Cape York. The particular blend of local wisdom, humour and history which characterises this slightly eccentric newspaper spring from a time which, tantalisingly, is just out of the reach of library based online sources. This is because traditional commercial database products do not typically capture newspaper content - and certainly not regional news content - this far back. And because of copyright limitations, the digitised material available from the excellent national newspaper source, Trove, ceases to exist after the mid-1950s. For this reason the donation of several issues of an obscure and interesting news publication from the early eighties amounts to a significant addition to the State Library’s extensive Queensland newspaper holdings. And it goes without saying that, were you to happen, at the point of ripping up the kitchen lino, upon a missing issue of the Cape Times, then the State Library would be very happy to hear from you. While we’re on the subject of elusive newspapers, the same might be said of a sizeable number of Queensland newspaper titles which are included on the Queensland Missing Newspapers list. As is evident from a reading of these issues of the Cape Times, the undeniable research value of newspapers is that - through the combination of their opinion pieces, reporting of contemporary events, personal stories, their design and even their advertisements - they enrich our understanding of the time and place which gave rise to their publication.

SUDOKU No. 134

Stars  

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) Don’t waste too much time deciding what to do next. A snap decision may work out well. Use your instinct! Romance. Don’t promise your partner anything unless you are sure that you can deliver the goods. This will be easier than trying to live up to standards which are too high.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

Memories from the past will come flooding back this week. A comment from a relative will focus your thoughts on a forgotten event which happened many years ago. Romance. Your love-life will soon be in very good shape. Use this opportunity to venture out of your comfort zone.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

FOR KIDS

An argument at work this week could get a little petty at times. Don’t get involved if you can possibly help it. Romance. Your partner would very much appreciate being spoilt. Try to plan a little treat to quench their needs.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Something which you have been putting off for too long will have to be tackled. Things could get worse if you don’t act now. Romance. A meeting with friends will be interesting. You’ll be surprised at how popular you are with the opposite sex. Don’t lose sight of your friends.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A dispute with a friend may start to get out of hand. You are coming from very different directions and may not see eye-to-eye. Accept this and move on. Romance. Your partner will be shocked by an unexpected display of emotion. Tell them the real reason behind your sentiment.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Take any chance you can to have a break. You need a change of scenery in order to see things in new light. Romance. Your partner will be spending a surprising amount of time with someone they recently met. Don’t let jealously get the best of you. This is a healthy change of pace.

FINDWORD No. 134 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Repairs around the house may take up more time than you expect. A chance discovery will make it worth the effort. Romance. You should finally get a reply to a letter which you sent several weeks ago. It will contain the answer that you have been hoping for. Open it immediately!

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Be careful to look behind the façade. When you see what lies beneath the surface you may have second thoughts! Be thorough! Romance. Don’t get jealous if your partner is spending time with a new friend. This new contact may not be quite as serious as you think. Support their friendship.

MUDDY RIVER

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Don’t let other people put too much work onto your shoulders. They may try to make you feel guilty for not helping them - you need to stand firm, however. Romance. An act of kindness from your partner will go a long way towards bringing you both together. Return the favour within the week.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) You may be feeling a little restless at the moment. Make sure you think carefully before you make any rash moves. Refrain from impulse buys. Romance. Both Venus and Mars are in good aspect at the moment, so you could have a very romantic evening in store this week. Free your schedule.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.

– Aristotle

SOLUTIONS No. 134

Try to calm down a little! If you are not careful, you will waste a lot of energy just rushing around, without actually getting much done. Romance. Starting a new sport will bring you in close connection with someone from the opposite sex. Allow them to help you with your training.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A more positive attitude will help you get over a recent difficult patch you’ve had with your parents. Apologize to them. Romance. Your partner will be very responsive. Don’t worry if they seem shy about letting you know how they feel. They may be worried about upsetting you.

WHAT sort of monsoon is this? So far, we’ve had 650 mm of rain in January along the Daintree Coast, - just above the long term January average here, but much less in Cooktown. Almost nothing so far in February, and a retreating monsoon at this moment. And maybe pouring rain today? Part of nature’s long term cycles, I guess. From February 8, we will have a series of very high tides above three metres until about February 13. If the weather stays good, this hopefully, will not mean sand erosion. The Marrja Boardwalk near Noahs Creek between Cape Trib and Cow Bay will be sensational viewing for an hour or so around high tide, so it’s a must for visitors - a great time to visit the area.

High tides are always followed by low tides. (really?) So this makes afternoon beach walking good with tides below one metre on these days. A few days ago, we walked along Cape Trib Beach from the Beach House. It’s a brilliant walk if you take it slowly and look in at all the interesting plants and flowers. One of these is the native frangipani. A beautiful flower as the photo shows, but also an interesting plant. There are lots of beautiful native frangipanis around the streets of Cooktown. Guests usually go weak at the knees looking at the range of colours, but this is a genuine local native frangipani /rubber tree/ sea mango (cerbera manghas). The fruit looks a bit like a mango

(hence its botanic name) and can, as it does on Cape Trib Beach, grow as a mangrove. In other words, it tolerates a little salt, and can grow on the beach. Just don’t eat it. It has a very powerful toxin and was used through parts of Asia to hunt animals. Positively, the roots contain anti-cancer properties. A couple of other plants to look out for are beach almonds (terminalia catappa) and their smaller cousins, brown damson. They’re starting to fruit in the region now. They have large colourful (green and red) leaves and attractive fruit, inside which is a nice tasting kernel

if you can hack your way through to it. It’s being bred to exploit its potential as a food Again, it is one of those plants that are actively being examined for anti-carcogenic potential. It also has some value as an aphrodisiac, so steady on. The town fathers and mothers of Cooktown must have known a thing or two, as they’re planted as a street tree! So many of our travellers along the Bloomfield Track comment on how old, how poor or how unhelpful the signage is. Residents of Cow Bay and Cape Trib raised this with the Mayor of Cairns, Bob Manning last week at a meeting at the Cow Bay Hotel.

Living Well

He really liked the proposal and we will discuss the potential of developing an integrated signage system right through the area with Cook Shire Councillors and the communities at Ayton, Rossville and Wujal. The idea is to attract, intrigue, educate and retain visitors to the area. It’s to tell all the stories that we locals know are interesting and important. The Bloomfield Track itself has been in good condition, with low creek levels, few potholes and lovely scenery. Just check those high morning tides, especially if we get a rain dump. Pantry and Garden Meals part II Hope you are shopping at Q-cumbers, Cooktown Food Connect and/or Cooktown Food Services (Iceworks) as fresh supplies have almost dried up at the supermarket. These flooding and cyclonic events are a very good reminder of why we need to support local growers and retailers who focus on stocking locally-sourced food. It’s also a good reminder of one of the many reasons to have some food plants growing in our own gardens. Did you know for instance that the leaves of

turmeric, Cape York Lily and very young galangal leaves can be used as herbs, salad greens or to add at the end of cooking a curry, soup or stir fry? Just remove the thick central vein and cut crossways into fine strips. The young leaves of cassava that fan out immediately around the small growing tip can also be used as a cooked green. Just cup your hand under the stems and gently close your hand around the leaves as you pull upwards. The central growing tip will remain, leaving the plant to grow and be healthy, and you’ll have a handful of tender leaves. As cassava leaves are

firm even when cooked, I cut them cross-ways into inch-long sections, then boil them for 10 minutes. They go well with creamy sauces, so coconut milk is ideal. Add the cooked cassava leaves to the sauce just a few minutes before serving, just to reheat them. The young tender growing tips and leaves of vines such as winged bean, Ceylon spinach (the quick growing twining vine with very dark purple seeds and succulent leaves), sweet potato, choko and pumpkin can also be used as stir fry greens. Use them as you would kang kong (water spinach) or other Asian greens by adding them in the last minute or

Revamped Cooktown too strong for Hope Vale By FIONA JARDEN

Hope Vale’s Genna Brownie (GD), playing in her first game of netball, displays an unorthodox passing technique to clear the ball from Cooktown’s Kristy Wright (GA).

THE 2013 Cooktown senior netball competition began on Monday night at the PCYC Events Centre with a strong turnout of more than 20 players from around the region. New faces combined with last year’s players to brush off the cobwebs in a one-hour game, which saw Cooktown take a resounding win over Hope Vale 40-6. Cooktown set the benchmark high with quick play of the ball, clean passing and good combinations between positions to effortlessly take the win. The evening gave both sides

the opportunity to work out combinations and test out players in different positions. Lesley Gibson-Brown, in the GS position, dominated the circle with excellent holding skills to take the ball cleanly from her feeders. She made a formidable combination in the circle with GA Kristy Wright, who shot accurately throughout the game. Mid-courter Joanne Bowen played solidly for the Hope Vale team and consistently helped to bring the ball through the court for her side. Nelly Nipper was also a standout player for Hope Vale

in defence, by anticipating Cooktown’s play to take clean intercepts. It was great to see such a strong turnout from Cooktown State School teachers who were all competitive throughout the night. It was also refreshing for the league to welcome more males to the competition. Anyone interested in joining the competition is welcome to do so. Games begin each Monday night at the Cooktown Events Centre at 6.45pm. Fees are $10 a term for membership and $2 per game, or $5 per game if you are not a Cooktown’s Alice Taylor ready to member. pass mid-stride.

An old mate remembered in annual cricket match

Karl Keller, Jason Williams and ‘Beno’ Welsh with the Aaron Davies Memorial Cup.

Wayne takes the first Monthly Medal for third, consecutive year I’M sure everyone had a joyful Christmas break and are now back into the swing of things. The bloody hot weather is certainly keeping players away, so hopefully a bit of rain will soon be on its way. In the meantime, please welcome our newest members, Bethne Webber and Bob Poyner. As everyone is aware, Italian Restaurant Weekly competitions were the only competitions played during the holiday period and below is a wrap of the winners and grinners: December 16-21: 1st Kate Thomson, 2nd Kim Haskell; December 22-28: 1st Paul Haley, 2nd Graham Burton; December 20 - January 4: 1st Ron Beacroft, 2nd Wayne King; January 5-11 - 1st Alice Burton, 2nd Graham Burton; January 12-18 - 1st Kim Haskell, 2nd Graham Burton; January 19-25 - 1st Graham Burton, 2nd Steve Weise; January 26-February 1 - 1st Steve Wilton, 2nd Mick Mason. Congratulations everyone, prize vouchers will be done soon. Saturday saw the commencement of our yearly calendar and it

was the January Monthly Medal which was played with a fantastic field turning up to play, albeit the heat was a killer - at 2.45pm on Saturday, it was 40.5C! Steve Wilton thought he had it in the bag as the men’s winner, but Wayne King burst his bubble and won on a count back. Both Steve and Wayne had a nett score of 58. This is the third year in a row that Wayne has taken out the first Monthly Medal competition men’s division. Well done Wayne on your consistency. The ladies’ winner for the day was Marilyn Clark, who had a nett score of 73. Right on her heels was Alice Burton as the runner-up with a nett 75. The lowest gross score for the day was Wayne King who hit 74 off the stick (and from what I hear, it has been his best score ever). Nearest-the-pins were landed by Blue Hobbs for 2/11, Graham Burton for 14 and Mick Mason for 9/18. Leading the field so far in the Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition is Trey Pengelly with a nett 66, followed by Brian Lemon on 68.

T h e committee is in the process of seeking sponsors for our competitions, so hopefully we will have some businesses on board to help. Individual sponsorship is also welcome. Kim Copland has kindly donated back the two prizes he won for the Club Championships and I have been advised that Cape York Tyres are willing to come back on board to sponsor the Sunday 9-Hole competition, although I am awaiting confirmation. Our most generous sponsors, The Wog Boys, John and Nick of The Italian Restaurant have confirmed their sponsorship for the year and will be sponsoring the weekly competitions, first place winner and also the runners-up for the Monthly Medal competitions. A big thank you goes out to John and Nick for their continued sponsorship. Happy golfing everyone. Kelly Barnett, Manager, Cooktown Golf Club.

SATURDAY, January 26 saw City take on Country in the annuual Aaron Davies Memorial Cup. Country Captain “Benno” Walsh won the toss and sent Geoffrey Kulka and David Curtis out to open the batting. A soggy outfield and hot, humid conditions and a fired-up City attack made batting very hard, and it wasn’t long before David headed back to the pavillion with the score on five, bowled by Glen Kulka. “Lingy” joined Geoff out in the middle, but could make only six before Billy Dukes had him caught in the slips. Geoff was next to go (done by Dad), and with the score at 3-17, Country was looking shaky. Captain “Benno” came to the crease and quickly looked to score some runs. Unfortunately, a steady stream of wickets at the other end saw him eventually run out for 33. “Asho” made a quick 13 in the dying overs to give Country a respectable 101

runs from their 20 overs. “Snelly” with 2-11, Glen Kulka and Billy Dukes with 1-4 were City’s best bowlers. City started their run chase confidently with openers Billy Dukes and Glen Kulka making a run-a-ball to score 46 before Billy became Country’s first victim. Glen and Captain Dom were quick to follow, but at 3-80 in the 14th over, City were looking for an early day. H o w e v e r, C o u n t r y h a d o t h e r ideas, and a great spell of bowling from “Benno”, Bret and Ray saw City crash to 8-88 before Mitch and Bret C got the innings going again, scoring the required runs in the final over. So, another great day’s cricket, which saw players past and present and friends and family enjoy a day out in the memory of local cricketer and good mate Aaron Davies. Cheers mate from Cooktown’s cricketers.

Executive delegation enters world of virtual Hash WE had an unusual run this week. Normally our host and hostess act as hares and lay a carefully structured trail for us to follow, using paper clues to lead us through the bush. This week the hare was F&*t. When he is not Hashing, he does a highly technical job, and recently he has been on courses to learn about Virtual Process Simulation, and The Importance of Delegation. To demonstrate his new learning, he decided on a virtual run. And because laying it himself would be an inappropriate use of executive resources, he arranged for Thermo to drive him around the course in her swish 4WD. The poor Hashers were presented with a list of six random points on the periphery of town, and expected to run around collecting numbers to prove that they had been everywhere in person. It did not work, of course. The collective reaction was ‘Bugger that for a game of soldiers! Does he think we’re stupid?’ Then they selected enough points for a relaxing stroll and set off. Just as well, because F&*t really wanted them to go from Hope Street, to the Botanic Garden, to Finch Bay,

back via impenetrable swamp to the Peninsular Caravan Park, to Shadows, and then back via Adelaide Street to The Boat House. Moses did not get home until seven o’clock. Nostrildumass was GM for the night, and started the circle by punishing Xtraktit and Offal for alcohol abuse they both managed to spill their drinks and the local ants had a drunken party. Then there was Fakawe, for being half a devil, and Whizz for reaching 1368 runs with Cooktown hash (57 cartons). Two new Hashers were presented with free shirts and told not to appear improperly dressed again. Finally F*&t was punished for lazy run setting, and Moses for being slow. By then, the luxurious “barbie” was very welcome. Next week’s run is at Cracklin’s place. Just turn up at 5.30pm on Monday, February 11 to join the fun. Contact Moses on 4069 5854 or 0409 686 032 for details. On-on! Lye Bak

Over-size barra must be released

HEARSAY reports of a Tasmanian tourist landing a 1300mm barra have left locals peeved, as this over-sized fish is one of the breeders and should have been released. However, he was just happy with his fish of a lifetime and was none-the-wiser about the fuss. And on the subject of barra, the season has started a bit slow, but the tides over the past couple of days should have fired them up a bit. The Wharf has produced a few on prawn lures as live baits are a bit scarce. Quarantine Bay is another handy land-based option when the tides are right. Offshore has been firing with many reports of great

sessions on a range of species with Spanish mackerel and cobia taking baits on the surface, to the bottom dwellers crunching baits in the depths. Coral trout from deep hangs have been the most reliable in depths of 30-35m, and, as usual, these are solid fish - or the very popular method of spearfishing is the other reliable method of gathering a feed. Night fishing has scored full eskies with nannygai and red emperor, a good mix of spangled emperor and mangrove jacks in the mix. There are still a few muddies about with the best baits being reef fish frames - a much better use than just

dumping them in the bin. The Annan and Endeavour Rivers have produced some good crabs and results will improve with another big flush, if we get one. If you’re looking to catch a few prawns, there are some around, but you may have to hunt them by boat. Other species that have been landed in the last week

include grunter, queen fish and trevally. With a moderate breeze forecast, the weekend ahead looks like estuary fishing might be the best option. But things change and it still looks like a great weekend for a fish somewhere. Tight lines, Russell Bowman, The Lure Shop.
