FOLLOWING the 2010 “hung parliament” negotiations, we gave our vote to the coalition based on their response to our 20 points of policy reform crucial for returning prosperity to Australia. In the almost three years since then, we have been stridently opposed to the Carbon Tax - the first of five reasons provided in recent correspondence from the Opposition canvassing crossbenchers’ response to a possible “motion of no confidence” in the Labor-Greens government. We acknowledge a number of government decisions that have caused anger amongst people who are suffering inexorable cost-of-living burdens
- such as the introduction (against Labor’s pledge to the people) of the Carbon Tax; a Greens’ ultimatum to deliver the ALP into government. With this in mind, we can reassure the Australian people that should Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) be delivered power in the Senate, we will ensure the passage of any LNP initiative to repeal the Carbon Tax. But we will stop dead the LNP proposal involving increasing food prices by imposing a GST on food. Meanwhile, we have requested meetings with the leaders of both major parties for more information on the proposed parliamentary debate about
calling an early election, which we note would be only a few weeks before the scheduled date. But we note also that six weeks can be a long time for people surviving on a week-to-week basis. And we remain appalled at the contempt shown in the past three years - through the relentless “party game” power plays by the corporate-controlled major parties at the expense of the real issues being addressed - for the people of Australia who are battling to make ends meet. Bob Katter MP, KAP Federal Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy

Bigger and better Festival is the promise BIGGER and better than last year, that’s Discovery Festival co-ordinator Bronwyn Sieverding’s promise for this year’s iconic event. While most of last year’s schedule of events is being repeated, some old favourites have been revived, while a few new innovative and unique items have been added to what amounts to a three-day mega entertainment bonanza. Headlining the program is a Guinness Book of Records sanctioned,
“World Banana Eating Competition”, with contestants only having to devour more than eight bananas in a minute to take the crown. And that shouldn’t be too hard. “The record holder is an American, but their bananas are smaller than ours,” Bronwyn said. “We established an unofficial record last year with bigger bananas, so this year should see the record come home to the Discovery Festival.” A big hit from last year, guitar vo-
calist and funnyman Pat Drummond, will be back on stage, but this year he is joined by country and western star Karen Lynn, while the evergreen Go Kart races will hold added interest with the announcement of some substantial prize money in its events. Among the revived attractions are the Cane Toad races, which will be held in Lions Park, and the Carnival is once again coming to town with its rides and attractions sure to keep the kids and adult kids going back

Anger at delays with croc By GARY HUTCHISON THE plight of a crocodile, seen at the Annan River with rope protruding from its mouth down to its tail, remains unclear, with locals frustrated and angry at difficulties and delays experienced in getting a response to the situation. Kym Jerome was alerted to the situation on Sunday by tourists who had seen and photographed the animal and tried to contact the appropriate authorities, but were unable to get a response. Ms Jerome said she tried what she thought were appropriate phone numbers on Sunday, but was greeted by answering machines. “In the case of one department, I left a message on a mobile and a landline, but still haven’t received a reply and it’s now Wednesday,” she said. On Monday, she was able to make contact with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and was assured prompt action
would be taken. The Cooktown Local News contacted the department on Tuesday seeking an update on the situation. M i k e D e v e r y, Manager Wildlife Operations, Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, said his department had received a report of a crocodile approximately four metres long seen in the Annan River with what appeared to be a rope coming out of its mouth. “EHP rangers will visit the location early next week to assess the crocodile’s health,” Mr Devery said. “If required, attempts will be made to catch the crocodile so it can have a veterinary assessment. “In the meantime, EHP has arranged for local land and sea rangers to keep an eye on the crocodile and report back if there’s any change in its condition.” Yuku Baja Muliku Director Larissa Hale said her rangers had been endeavouring to locate the croc, with further efforts made yesterday,
but, at the time of going to press, was unable to advise of its condition. Mrs Hale said she that legally her rangers could not touch the crocodile, because training in “Crocodile Handling” she had requested some time ago for her crew had still not been delivered. She said she was angry with the length of time it had taken for locals to get a response. “This is a perfect example of us being in a position to respond immediately once advised, but, at this time while we can monitor these things, we cannot act,” she said. Loathe to offer an opinion as to what was attached to the rope in the croc’s mouth, Ms Jerome said the croc had lived at what is known locally as “Red Bend” or “Crocodile Bend” for about 20 years. “I’ve seen it grow from a juvenile to its current size,” she said. “It did leave for a little when someone dumped a car there, but it’s come back in recent times.” She said she was furi-
ous at the thought the animal might be suffering, or that it may have to euthenised because of government delays in dealing with the matter. Mrs Hale agreed with Ms Jerome, saying that that particular crocodile was regarded as an animal of significant importance to her people. EPH has advised the number to contact regarding crocodiles is 1300 130 372.

School dental services disrupted by vandals ALTHOUGH circumstances surrounding two recent acts of vandalism committed on the dental van that visits local schools have been clarified, conjecture as to the services it supplies is still circulating. It was reported to the Cooktown Local News that Cooktown State School children were not receiving expert dental treatment because the van had sustained about $40,000 worth of damage after the most recent incident. While neither the Queensland Police Service nor Queensland Health are supplying damage estimates, the damage reported would suggest that no where near that level of damage had been sustained. A QPS spokesman said that both offences were committed at Hope Vale, with the first occurring on April 1, when a reversing camera and windscreen wipers were
damaged. Four juveniles were dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act in relation to that offence. The second attack on the van was committed between May 27 and May 28, windscreen wipers, tail lights and roof damage was caused. Investigations are continuing in an effort to locate the offender(s) responsible for that damage. Cape York Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Officer Susan Turner said those Hope Vale children who could not be seen in the dental van after it was removed for repairs, were seen instead at the Hope Vale Primary Health Care Centre. Ms Turner said she expected the van to be available for its next scheduled oral health visit to the Rossville State School on June 11.
However, it is where the dental services for the students attending Cooktown’s schools that remains clouded. “Oral health services for Cooktown children are not affected, as these services are delivered through the Cooktown Dental Clinic at the Cooktown Multi-Purpose Health Service and not by the dental van,” Ms Turner said. But the mother (who asked not to be named) who supplied the information to the Cooktown Local News said her children had only ever received treatment from the dental van at the Cooktown State School. “There is an area set up near the teachers’ car park, which includes special drains and everything,” she said. “No one I know of has been told about a change to policy regarding going to the clinic.”
Spot-a-croc hotline for sightings IN an effort to make North Queensland waterways safer, a crocodile squad has been formed, charged with aiding the removal of dangerous reptiles from popular waterways in designated areas north of Townsville, including Cape York. As part of the squad, Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott has urged members of the public to report any croc sightings to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. “We want people to record details about the croc, including approximate size, location and behaviour and take a photo if possible,” said Mayor Scott. “Community members can then report their findings to the Spot-A-Croc hotline on 1300 130 372 or the Townsville QPWS office on 4796 7769.”

IN this, the second installment of the Gungarde Aboriginal Corporation’s program to capture Cooktown’s Indigenous past, we talk to Doreen Ball (right), an elder from Wujal Wujal, who recently shared her story about her history in the area. “I was born and bred here on the south side of Bloomfield, my mum is from Rossville and my dad is from Wujal Wujal, so I’m a Traditional Owner for both of those lands,” Doreen said. “When I grew up, we didn’t have a good home. “We lived in a grass hut that mum and dad built for us until 1957 when the first missionaries came.” She said her family crossed the river everyday, walking to school hungry without food for lunch. “My parents got one small ration every week,” she said. “There was only one shop down here where you could buy flour, tea and sugar and small things like that. “Dad worked tin mining everyday so we could buy food. “When we got moved into the dormitories, we worked everyday doing domestic jobs like ironing
and washing. “ We l e a r n e d how to bake bread and how to cook. “The Lutherans from Hope Vale came out and did church out here and it was then when I became a Christian.” Doreen described the land as it used to be. “This land where the community is today used to be all bush,” she said. “And I used to hunt around here as a little girl for scrub hen eggs.
“Then in 1957 the missionaries came and the men cleared the whole area by hand with shovels, mattocks and steel rakes. “Every time I look back on my childhood I get emotional especially when I tell stories to my grandchildren.”

School head has high hopes for student futures Story by ERIC GEORGE THE high school is an important part of Cooktown. It educates our kids and turns them into the Cooktowners of the future. Recently I sat in the Principal’s office - that is, Leanne Rayner’s office - and asked her to tell us all something about her work. I started by asking her if she was a Cooktown girl: “No. Not originally. I grew up in Melbourne. “I had a big family. On my mother’s side they were sheep and dairy farmers. My dad and his family lived in Brunswick in the middle of Melbourne - they were Italian. “The whole of my life I have really wanted to be a teacher. “I had a cubby house in the back yard when I was young and, in the holidays, I would go around and charge all the parents fees for running a little school. “We would do art and activities in our yard. I was about ten then.” Leanne went to University in Toorak to study, of course, teaching and received her diploma. She then moved to the Gold Coast and studied part time for her degree. I suggested that studying and working must have been a challenge: “I’ve always been good at time management. “We had two Olympic sized swimming pools and my husband ran them as a business. And tennis, and bowls, and surf clubs.” Leanne had her hands full with children studying and helping with the business, as well as teaching. “We decided we would come from the Gold Coast to Cooktown because we needed to build a quieter life. “We decided to buy this 250=acre block that did not have anything on it. So we had to build roads, shed, house, fencing, everything. Endeavour River Escape. “My husband always wanted to move somewhere he could offer a place for people to go camping and fishing, and to be able to relax.” I was interested to know whether it was teaching or the tourism business that persuaded Leanne to come to Cooktown. “We decided that we wanted to move to Cooktown, so I put in for a transfer from Robina on the Gold Coast. We arrived in December. 2003. “I taught Year 8 and Years 11 and 12.” After settling into her new school, Leanne became involved with working across the education cluster of Rossville, Hope Vale, Cooktown,

Cooktown hosts National Trusts Conference
Local poet Marty Pattie performs for National Trust conferencers on the Wharf under the watchful eyes of Re-enactment Marines Chris Vella and Appointments are essential Mario Cortesi. THE National Trusts of Australia came to Cooktown recently for their annual conference held from May 21 - 23. Fifty delegates from every state and territory and from the local community attended the event, enjoying everything Cooktown has to offer, including the first class conference facilities at the PCYC Cooktown Events Centre, a spectacular dinner on the Wharf and perfect weather. The conference explored the theme of community heritage at the crossroads, celebrating the significant achievements of community heritage organisations in Australia, while examining the challenges many face in finding a sustainable future for community heritage. The importance of partnerships and continued relevance to the community were some of the key elements to emerge from the discussions. Conference delegates were welcomed by the Mayor of Cooktown, Peter Scott at the James Cook Museum on Tuesday May 21 at an informal drinks gathering and again at the Events Centre for the formal opening of the conference the following day. Alberta Hornsby welcomed delegates to Country and addressed the conference about Aboriginal heritage in Cooktown, including the reconciliation that took place between local Indigenous people and James Cook’s party in 1770. The Chairman of the National Trust, Stephen Sheaffe described her address as inspirational and undertook to have the Trust movement investigate ways in which further support could be given to promoting Indigenous heritage in Cooktown. Alberta also took delegates on a tour of the town. A conference dinner was held on Wednesday night on the Wharf and guests were treated to a special event with the arrival of Captain Cook - accompanied by two of his officers with muskets - and his recital of a uniquely Australian poem. Other speakers at the conference included Dr Melanie Piddocke, who hosted tours of the James Cook Museum. Visitors from interstate were extremely impressed with Melanie’s knowledge of the cultural items on display and the work the National Trust had undertaken to conserve the once derelict building. The National Trust provided a number of speakers on Talk to your AEC Indigenous and Community Engagement Officer the excellent work it is doing in many areas of heritage, including the development of smart phone apps, tourism in your state or territory to find out how to apply. initiatives at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, heritage tourism and sustaining community heritage collections. Along the BLOOMFIELD TRACK
Spicy tales of rainforest discovery NUTMEG, mace, cloves, pepper and other spices. How much are they worth? A few hundred years ago, as much as gold. Not to mention the hazardous sea voyage. Back in the late 1400s, it took Portuguese ships many months to sail from Portugal to Timor and the Spice Islands. And weeks more to explore the region in the early 1500s as they strove to consolidate the spice trade and seek new wealth. We have our own nutmeg and spice species as well as native peppers in the Daintree and Wet Tropics World Heritage area, some flowering now. Carlos Teixeira and Ana Paula Rosa visited Cooktown recently from Portugal. In just two days, the quick way, via Qantas. Maybe to check out our native spices? Interestingly, Carlos is a part of the Big Brother TV series back home in the Lisbon area, so it’s no wonder they needed a fix on “real” reality rather than virtual reality by visiting the rainforest and Cooktown. They loved it, especially secluded spots like Archer Point, the big views from Grassy Hill and the sense of Indigenous and early European history in the area. Carlos and I chatted about the Portuguese control of the volcanic islands (the Banda Islands) to the north east of Timor in the early 1500s, with their treasures of nutmeg, mace, cloves and other valuable spices. Some historians claim that a three-ship fleet under a Captain Mendonca may have ventured eastwards across the top end of Australia looking for more spices, but any maps were kept “commercial-inconfidence” and some may have been destroyed in the 1755 Great Lisbon Earthquake (earthquake, tsunami then fire, a nasty triple whammy). The famous circumnavigator of what was then New Holland and New South Wales (he later called it “Australia”), Britains’ Matthew Flinders believed that the Portuguese had been to the top end, based on early maps. Yet, without firm proof, current history acknowledges that the first Europeans proven to make contact with Australia were the Dutch (Capt Janszoon in the Duyfken) at the northwest end of Cape York. Later of course, James Cook and the Endeavour visited accidentally on one of the greatest discovery and map-making trips of history - 243 years ago this week, celebrated in the Discovery Festival. From another part of the world, Western Australia, Emma and Kelly from the National Parks Department were having their first experience of the Daintree rainforest. “Too short,” they admitted. Emma explained the pivotal work that the department is doing with Gas Company Chevron in the far north of WA on Barrow Island.

Barrow Island was formed 8000 years ago when falling Ice Age sea levels separated it from the mainland, and left it a lush rainforest inhabited by the local Indigenous people. Fishing, pearling and then the massive Barrow oil extraction each introduced European feral animals and wiped out many natives. Coral reef bleaching and unknown impacts on fish stocks have followed. The WA Government ensured the feral animals were painstakingly removed about 10 years ago and then established requirements for Chevron’s gas extraction in the region. Now, Chevron and the department are trying to re-establish native flora and fauna. Let’s hope it all works. Emma and Kelly remind us any visitors to the region include highly-qualified professionals who have impressive dedication and crucial tasks in the big scheme of things. They also have a fascination with our unique area. Also, it reminds us that we need to keep on top of environmental issues, wherever they are. The Track’s in pretty good condition, but will be slippery after rain. Fallen trees could be a nuisance with the high winds. However, the tides shouldn’t be a factor if crossing the Bloomfield River. Water: An important nutrient often overlooked Week 1 Challenge: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses (2 litres) of water per day. FOLLOWING from the introduction to the “8 Week Challenge”, I thought we would start the challenge off with a nice easy one. You may think you are already getting enough fluid - but are you? Water is an important nutrient which is often overlooked as part of a healthy diet. You may need more or less depending on your body size, exercise levels and the climate. Thirst is not a good indicator of whether or not you have drunk enough; when you become thirsty you may already be dehydrated. Early signs of dehydration include: headache, fatigue loss of appetite flushed skin heat intolerance dry mouth and eyes
burning sensation in the stomach and dark urine Why is good hydration important? Dehydration can lead to a decrease in physical performance, by way of: Gastric emptying is slowed, resulting in stomach discomfort; The body’s ability to regulate heat resulting in increased body temperature and an elevated heart rate; and Perceived exertion is increased causing the person to feel more fatigued than usual at a given work rate. Mental function is also reduced, which can have negative implications for motor control, decision making and concentration. So, what functions does water perform in the body? It acts as a solvent for minerals vitamins amino acids glucose and many other nutrients, plays key roles in digestion, absorption and transportation of nutrients, provides the means for
a safe elimination of toxins and waste products from the body and helps in the regulation of body temperature. Here are some suggestions to either encourage or help you to drink more water: Keep a jug of chilled water in the fridge; Add fresh lemon juice or mint leaves for flavour; Take a water bottle with you when you go out; Try drinking sparkling water; and Keep a water bottle on your desk. Good luck with this week’s challenge, and don’t forget, these small changes will form a long-term habit over time. Hopefully by the end of the “8 Week Challenge”, all these ‘small’ changes will improve on your overall health and well-being. Have a good week everybody. Stay safe - and hydrated!

Who can mind the journey when the way leads home? Writings to reflect CHRISTIANS are like pilgrims “passing through” on the way ‘home’. They are indeed “citizens of high heaven” ( Phil 3:20). That’s great, but at times things don’t work out at as we think they should, and life looks a mess and we feel rather less than a citizen of heaven. A child watched his granny making a cake. She mixed the ingredients in a bowl. As he looked at the unappetizing mixture he commented, “What a mess!” Grandma replied, “Yes, it looks that way now, but when I’m through this mess will be a deliciously good cake.” Sometimes we look at life like that child looked at that uncooked cake mix. It looks like a mess, but we must keep
in mind that God is working for us and therefore, even what seems like a mess in life will turn out to be good. Christians needn’t become discouraged or defeated by life’s trials. Rather, we are confident and hopeful in every situation because: “we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him. . . “ (Rom 8:28). Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the foolish decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, we will never lose our value in God’s eyes. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, we are priceless to him.
” (Just like a grubby $20 note found on the footpath will always have its value regardless of its condition.) Remember the old From the Pulpit song? “When the road is rough and steep, fix your eyes upon Jesus. He alone has power to keep. Fix your upon him. Jesus is our precious friend, one on whom our souls depend. He will keep you till the end, fix your eyes upon him”. Blessings Pastor Peter Cooktown Baptist Church

Re-enactment to be a broader experience WITH the final full rehearsal of the Re-enactment of Cook’s landing and his first contact with the Bama completed on Sunday, Director Phil Rouse is estimating next weekend’s production will take about 30 minutes to perform. The sound is better than it has ever been with eight speakers in use, plus the added fact that people can bring their portable radios and tune in live to our local radio station Pulse FM 87.6 with their own personal speaker.
The only thing that could mar the sound now is the wind, and we can’t control the weather. Hopefully, we will have a duplication of last weekend when it was a perfect day. This year’s costs have blown out somewhat, with the purchase of new speakers and some new costumes, so we will be holding a few fund raisers to assist with the cost of presenting the performance free to the community. We will be holding a
barbecue at The Boathouse on Friday evening and you can’t miss having one of our special ganguuru kebabs, a beef or fishburger. Our barbecue will be repeated on Sunday after the Re-enactment and then we will hold a free concert featuring Coley Bowen our head Bama Man in the Re-enactment for which we will ask a gold coin donation. The Malgarri (corroboree) will commence at 6pm which is the Bama version of the events which took place here at Waalumbaal
Birri (Endeavour River) in 1770. There will also be a merchandise stall at the Re-enactment on Sunday, where our new booklet “Historical Endeavours” can be purchased. The booklet highlights the historical events of 1770 here at the Endeavour River. Cook’s Springwater will also be available throughout the performance. We have also arranged for the Waymbuurr Warra ladies to conduct the Gan-Gaarr Warra Walking Tours which commence at
Will it rain on the Festival ‘sParade?
WILL Mother Nature rain on this weekend’s Discovery Festival parade? And what contingency plans are there in place should an adverse weather event occur? Two separate weather forecasting authorities both agree there is a high chance of rain, but cannot agree as to the percentage likelihood. Elders Weather says that for Friday, there is an 80% chance of rain, a 70% chance of rain on Saturday and a 90% chance of rain on Sunday. However, while Weatherzone has arrived at the same percentage forecasts for Friday and Sunday, it
is forecasting a 90% chance of rain for Saturday too. But inclement weather won’t deter Loretta Sullivan’s intrepid Cooktown Re-enactment Association members with her announcement: “The show will go on”. “We’ve made arrangements for coverings for all the sound gear and electricals,” Mrs Sullivan said. “So with that side of things looked after, we’ll be going ahead regardless of the weather.” An alternative venue is available for the planned Friday night Family Movie, with that event to be transferred to Gungarde Hall
should it rain. “We’ll have to take the screen and everything up to the Gungarde Hall,” PACE co-ordinator and movie night organiser Peter Herrmann said. And what about the rest of the Discovery Festival’s scheduled events? “There are still a lot of things planned for inside, so they won’t be affected, “ Discovery Festival coordinator Bronwyn Sieverding said. “But we’ll just have to take things as they come and play it by ear if it rains. “There are just some things that can’t be done indoors, they would just lose their context.”
9am and 3pm on Saturday only. Tickets can be purchased at The Boathouse, numbers are limited and will commence in Bicentennial Park where Cook landed in 1770. This is an insightful look at Cook’s visit through the eyes of the descendants of the Bama who met with Cook and his crew 243 years ago.
If you want to know more about what really happened, join one of these informative tours. Two raffles have also been organised, the first one which will be shared with the Variety 4WD Club, is for the honour of firing the cannon and will be drawn after the Re-enactment. You must be present at the draw to
win. The second raffle will be drawn on Monday morning at The Boathouse, with local accommodation, an air fare, a carton of Cook’s Endeavour wine and a die cast model car among the prizes. Loretta Sullivan Cooktown Re-enactment Association President

2013 DISCOVERY FESTIVAL
Public holiday declared in 1913 to celebrate Cook’s landing
CELEBRATIONS for Captain Cook were alive and well in 1913. There wasn’t any Queen’s Birthday holiday then, but the government of the day proclaimed June 10 a public holiday - “in the town of Cooktown, for commemorating the anniversary of the landing of Captain Cook”. There has always been a number of photos in our collection, which were wrongly labelled 1917. As the following story from the Brisbane Courier, Wednesday, June 18 1913., and the illustrations which go with it now show, that these photos relate to the 1913 celebrations. CAPTAIN COOK’S LANDING CELEBRATION AT COOKTOWN. “The celebration yesterday of Captain Cook’s landing at Cooktown in 1770, took the form of a procession, starting from Cook’s tree and stopping in front of Cook’s monument, where the school children formed a
square. Mr C. R. North, on behalf of the Hospital Committee, called for three cheers for the King. He gave an address to the children and thanked the public for the splendid way they had responded to the hospital appeal. The order of procession was as follows:- Australia’s emblem (a kangaroo), led by a small boy; the Town Band, school children, city fathers and the Hospital Committee, friendly societies, a model of Captain Cook’s ship, the Endeavour, manned by four small Queenslanders (Master Selwyn Smith represented Captain Cook; Master H. Peters was Lieutenant Hicks and Master A. Williamson took the part of Sir Joseph Banks) and drawn by Captain Evanson’s Aborigines in costumes; Chinese residents, the cyclist corps, Aborigines in war paint, the cricket team in fancy dress, ‘Darktown Minstrels’ band and other unique items and the general public. At the reserve, a fancy dress

cricket match was played and children’s sports held. The commercial travellers in town provided all the prizes, so the hospital will derive benefit of the moneys collected previously for that purpose. The model of the Endeavour was built by Captain Monaghan and Williamson and Messers Ahern, Hall, Burke, Matsen, Nelson, Carter and Ashford voluntarily, and was beautifully finished in every detail. It is intended to make this an annual function, calling it Cook’s Hospital Day. Fully 500 persons took part in the procession.” Research has shown that the celebration occurred again in 1914, but then due to the outbreak of WW1 it was stopped. At this stage it is unclear whether or not it recommenced after the war. If anyone has information we would be pleased to hear it.

ART SOCIETY CELEBRATES THREE MAJOR EVENTS SATURDAY night saw the Cooktown School of Art Society celebrate three big occasions - its 35th Annual Art Exhibition, the 25th anniversary of the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery and the announcement of its first patron in Sayah Scott. President Lea Stevens was joined by Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott in opening the exhibition to what was possibly the biggest audience seen at an opening. Mayor Scott said the annual exhibiton was one of the most-important art and cultural events in the region. “Art in all its forms is one of the cornerstones of this area’s culture,” he said. “And there is such a really strong clique here in Cooktown, they really put a focus on Cooktown to the outside world.” He said the range and quality of art featured in the exhibition was a dramatic display of the exciting talents living here. New patron Sayah Scott said she was extremely honoured in being invited to be the Society’s first patron. Exhibition judge Ludij Peden (above) congratulated the artists on the high quality of work she was privileged to judge. “And it’s not only the art on display that needs to be congratulated, but the quality of the exhibition,” Mrs Peden said. “Until you’ve done it, no one realises just how much work is involved and how intricate the task is.”

Epic clashes in junior league FRIDAY night was a night of epic clashes for the Cooktown Junior Rugby League at John Street Oval. We were lucky to have Cameron Miller and Dave Maiden up from the Cairns JRL to referee the games for us this week, and they were both impressed with the calibre of our players. The first game for the night was our under-10s, who combined with Wujal Wujal to play against Hope Vale. It was a great game to watch and the young fellas all seemed to be having a great time of it. Hope Vale were too strong for our guys in the end. The final score was Hope Vale 12 Cooktown 0. The Best and Fairest for the game was Kyzaiah Bowen for his double-try effort. Second game was again a combined Cooktown and Wujal Wujal under 12s side to play Hope Vale. There was some real class shown by both teams in this game, but Cooktown just didn’t seem to be able to recover from missing so many of their regular players. However, they put up a gallant fight to be defeated 34 - 0. Hope Vale put on an impressive performance, with the Best and Fairest award going to Hamish Gibson for his amazing four-try and one conversion effort. What came next was a hard hitting under-14s clash between Cooktown and Hope Vale that had the crowd on its feet. This game had all the makings of a first class
game, so evenly-matched that the decider was a very last-minute conversion. The final score was Cooktown 22 - Hope Vale 20. Best and Fairest for the game was Dale Kulka for his two-try effort. The Cairns refs were very impressed by these older boys and the talent they showed. Thanks to John and the guys at the Italian for sponsoring us - The Italian support us with the food we sell every week and they also give the Best and Fairest from each game a Large Pizza Voucher - so winners please come and see Nardia next game night for your voucher. Thanks Tex for your tireless work with the boys, we really appreciate your time. Hopefully, next game we can have a few more men out there to help with the teams. T hanks again Cameron and Dave from Cairns, and thanks to the other mums and dads who helped out and thanks Sylvia for organising and selling the food for us. Thanks to the crowd who braved the weather and came out to support the kids, see you all next fortnight. Remember - we will be selling food down at the oval every fortnight when the juniors play, so why not make a night of it and help support the club by having dinner there as well. All of the money raised goes back into the club to help pay for the lights and buy equipment. Nardia Whitman Cooktown Junior Rugby League Secretary

the gates open, visitors are welcome to call in to watch or to make any enquiries. If anyone otherwise wants information on the club, contact me on 4069 5173. At the SSAA Cameron Creek Range this Saturday, June 8, there is a DTL Shotgun Shoot being held from 1pm. For details contact Bill McCann on 0458 693 534. Members are reminded of the club;s monthly meeting, which will be held

Members are reminded we will be holding a Special General Meeting next Wednesday, June 12.

latter was bowled by Billy Dukes for 22. A couple of overs later, Lyndon was bowled by ring-in Brett Pickup for 16, which left the Captain Selwyn McIvor and Timmy Rosendale in the middle to resurrect the Heroess chase. Timmy made an entertaining 51 before he became Wal’s first victim, caught well in the deep by Brett. Brandon was out for four soon after, bowled by David, which then saw Oswald (Ossie) Gibson come to the crease. His stay was brief as he was brilliantly stumped by Tony off Wal’s bowling for one. Danger man Selwyn was out later in the same over, well caught by Brett on the boundary for 44. Phillip Walker and Geoffrey Kulka did an outstanding job to keep Hope Vale in the match as they were chipping away on the target. Mark finally broke through by getting the edge of Phillip’s bat to be caught behind down the leg side by Wal, out for nine. This brought about a very tense and thrilling final over as the Heroes required 10 runs for a win. Shaun Law got the unenviable job of having to contain the big hitting Geoffrey, but the weight of expectation saw Geoffrey miss-time a big hit, only to see spoon up for Mark to take the match winning catch. Hope Vale were all out for 220. The way both teams went about with their strategies made this one of the most intriguing games to watch for a long time. Excellent bowling from both sides, along with very clever batting made the start of the season the benchmark for the year I hope. Saturday’ scheduled match between the Black Mountain Panthers and Hope Vale will now be played next month. Sunday will see Council face up to BMP from 10am.

A glorious winter’s day greeted the Council Diggers who took on the Hope Vale Heroes in what was to become one of the most-exciting games seen at Queens Oval in recent years. Diggers won the toss and elected to bat with Mark Whitman and Billy Dukes opening. The score had reached 27 when Billy was dismissed, caught by Coley Bowen off the bowling of Brandon Ford for two runs. Wal Welsh joined Mark and together they added 73 runs before Mark was bowled by a great delivery from Preston Deemal for a dashing 64. Young Shaun Law was the next batsmen in, but it wasn’t long before that man Preston struck again, getting Wal to loft one into the deep, only to be caught by Reagan Hart with the score on 107. Father Steve joined his son in the middle, but failed to bother the scorers as he was soon back in the pavilion with the total on 109, bowled by Phillip Walker. This brought David Curtis to the wicket and together with Shaun, they took the total to 129 before a mix up in the middle saw David run out by Coley for 11. Captain Tony Holmes was in next, and set about getting a competitive score only to be caught by Lyndon McIvor off ring-in Geoffrey Kulka’s bowling for 16. With the score at 158 Steve Wilton joined Shaun in the middle and together they saw out the last six overs to reach a total of 222. The last two overs went for 30 runs, which included some lusty hitting and desperate running. At least one of the batsmen was left a bit short of a breath at the end. Shaun ended up 39 not out and Steve 26 not out. Best bowlers for Hope Vale were Preston with 2-19, while Brandon, Phillip and ring-in Geoffrey had a wicket each. After lunch, Reagan Hart and Preston opened the batting, but the Diggers drew first blood as Reagan was caught for a “duck by Shaun Law off the bowling of his father Steve. With the score on one, Lyndon was in next and together with Preston, started to put together a few runs before the

Pengelly leads this week’s comp. ONLY four members competed in last week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford competition, with Graham Burton claiming the pizza with a score of 38 Stableford points. However, a large field of 17 turned out to compete in last Saturday’s Stableford-witha-twist competition and the modified scoring system didn’t confuse anyone. Rick Butler had an amazing game to win the day’s event with a score of 42. John Pettersen was next in line for runnerup position with a score of 37, while Graham Burton dominated the nearest-the-pins, landing them all. Under the Club Captain’s instructions, this competition was entered into GolfLink as a Stroke competition so some of your handicaps may have changed. Wayne King and Trey Pengelly enjoyed a round of golf together on Sunday for the Cape York Tyres Sunday 9-Hole Stroke competition and the commencement of The Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition. currently being paid are not covering all the prize costs and to that end, a motion was passed at the committee meeting, that as of July 1, 2013 competition fees will be increased to $5 per competition. The competition fee covers all the nearestthe-pin prizes, the runner-up prizes for the Sunday 9-Hole competitions and the weekly competitions and also covers the Birthday Gift Certificates. Just an early reminder that membership fees will be due on July 1 for the next financial year. As the annual affiliation fees (Golf Australia, GolfLink and Far North Queensland Golf Association) and of course insurance cover increases every year, the renewal cost for membership this year will increase slightly to cover all costs. Membership renewal forms will be sent out to existing members towards the end of June. Happy golfing everyone Kelly Barnett Cooktown Golf Links Manager
THE host and hare for this week’s run was Archive, and he promised us a traditional run set with proper clues in white toilet paper, complete with checks and false trails. Very good - the Hash can handle that - so we set off in the general direction of the school. It was quickly apparent that Archive is very parsimonious with his toilet paper. There were scraps tied into bushes along the way, but they were very, very far apart. This was not going to be easy. We found the first check in a place where we had a choice of left or right. Both looked equally unattractive, but looking right we could see a very obvious piece of paper. Fingerling went that way because he is a trusting soul. F*&t, who is a hardened cynic, went the other way and did not exactly find any paper. He did see a scrap in the distance and ran to that, accidentally making a huge short cut. The slower members of the pack, who normally specialise in short cuts, were stuck doing a big circuit to get to the same place, by which time F*&t and his companions were long gone. The next check was also very obvious, and this time the trail led through the bush to the

disaster zone that used to be Nature’s PowerHouse car park. By now, everyone was ready for a drink stop, but we had to carry on to Finch Bay where Archive’s car was waiting with Buck’s Fizz for everyone. The real Hashers returned home in the dark on the bush paths to the Botanical Gardens. I don’t know what the others did. Probably telephoned for a taxi. GM Thermo called the circle to order and immediately punished Soggy for lending her a torch with no batteries to get through the bush. Then there was Sewezy for losing her car and Whizz for tooting his wife’s trumpet. Thermo could have gone on, but the night was getting cold and everyone was ready for Barran’s special chicken rice. Next week’s run starts at the council offices, and Xtraktit is the hare. Just turn up at 5.30 on Monday, June 10 to join the fun. Contact Moses on either 4069 5854 or 0409 686 032 for details. On-on! Chat with Matt G’day again, Well, last week’s scans on my injured knee didn’t go too well for me, but the news wasn’t all bad. Thankfully, I escaped any major damage, but the doctors decided I needed some internal “housekeeping” with an arthroscope to tidy up the cartilege and remove some floating bits and pieces. The prognosis has been good, but it means I can expect to spend between four and six weeks on the sideline. Last week was a complete rest period, but I start physiotherapy on it this week as the first part of the rehabilitation process. We’ve got a great medical team here at the Cowboys, so I’m hoping for a quick and full recovery so I can get back onto the paddock as soon as I can. I didn’t travel to the Coast with the team for the Titans’ game, so I was tortured having to watch the game at home, and suffering another loss made it a lot worse. But I will be with the team at home for Saturday night’s crunch game against the Bulldogs. Hopefully, our Origin boys, “Johnno” (Johnathan Thurston), Matty Scott, Brent Tate and Jimmy Tamou will come back injury-free and help get us back on to the victory trail, although reports are that “Johnno” will be doubtful for the big one - either because of a virus or the birth of his new baby. It’s a must-win match for us, so don’t forget to tune in to FOX and give us all your support. - MATT BOWEN

ZANE Stallan’s Australian Football League star continues to rise, and shine brightly, with the recent announcement of his selection in another junior representative team that will contest this week’s State Primary School championships in Mackay. Only 13-years-old, but selected in the Cape York Crusaders under-14 team, Zane is no stranger to playing against players older than him, with his representation in teams in 2011 and 2012 in sides meant for players 12 months his senior. Such is the talent of the gifted centre, last year saw him earn a state jumper after similar trials held on the Gold Coast. However, his natural athleticism has seen him a stand-out in the local junior rugby league competition, while he also remains undefeated in a short career in his new sporting love, Muay Thai Boxing. But the shy youngster has admitted a burning desire to pursue a professional AFL career, preferrably with the Geelong Cats if he has his way. “I really like AFL and hope I can keep going with it so I can be a full-time professional,” Zane said.

“I like playing centre because it means I can get my hands on the ball a lot. “I’m in the middle and can rove a bit without being stuck as a forward or a back.” While he admitted he didn’t have any one particular style of kick as the big bomb in his skills arsenal, he said “smothering” was an aspect of the game he enjoyed. “That’s where I charge down the ball while another player’s trying to kick it,” he said. And Zane’s lofty dreams of AFL glory won’t be smothered by the parental advice of “get a real job” that sees the aspirations of many youngsters crushed. “We’re behind him all the way,” Zane’s mum Katrina Lewis said. “Whatever we can do, we’ll be trying to help him achieve his goals.” This weekend will see the Crusaders playing four games, with their first match against Capricorn starting at 11.30am on Saturday, then a second game that day will see them pitched against Townsville at 3pm. Then on Sunday, there will be no sleep-in for the Cape York lads, with an early start of 8.30am against Mackay, after which they rest until 11.30am when they do battle with Cairns.
