Great racing, glamour, high fashion at Laura WHILE organisers of the annual Laura three-day equestrian bonanza were boasting record crowds in the camp grounds, spectator numbers at Saturday’s races ebbed and flowed.

Horses and jockeys battling it out on the track in races one and two had a medium crowd, but as numbers swelled in preparation for the judging of the Fashions on the Field, patrons stood shoulder-to-shoulder on the hill cheering on their steeds in race three.

The growing interest in the fashion extravaganza was evident with stallions, fillies and mares of the human variety donning their finest “glad rags” in a blaze of colours and styles to strut their stuff on the course in front of the packed crowd.

Aimee Hinsch won the under-15s category, while the under-35s section drew the largest number of entrants with 61 in the field won by Hayley Coburn.

More sedate sophistication was the feature of the over-35 ladies entrants, with Leevi Elmes winning that purse, while James Cockburn’s suit displaying a level of country men’s elegance earned him the trophy in the men’s section.

Wharf out of action during ‘face lift’ COOKTOWN’S iconic Wharf will undergo a facelift in September, which will see the facility unavailable for use for about six weeks while the substructure is replaced with material which will have a guaranteed life span of 100 years.

While the existing pylons will remain, the substructure has been declared to be in a dilapidated state, with the timber surface of the Wharf

set to be replaced with a modern, long-lasting composite material.

Cook Shire Engineer Tony Lickiss said the actual material to be used has yet to be confirmed.

“Council is still finalising the tender process for this project and the actual contractor hasn’t been confirmed,” Mr Lickiss said.

“As such, the material hasn’t been confirmed either.

“However all conforming tenders have to provide a material with a no-maintenance period of 100 years.”

Mr Lickiss said aesthetically there will be very little change, and, more importantly, the new Wharf will be a safer structure.

“By closing the gap between the main Wharf and its adjacent upper dolphin landing, the new Wharf

will not only be safer, but more user friendly,” he said.

“The design will follow what is currently in place.”

He said while work is expected to commence in September this year, an exact start date is yet to be confirmed, Council will give notice via various media outlets, including the Cooktown Local News, of the actual time when construction

works will commence.

“The Cooktown Wharf is an iconic part of the town used for both commercial and recreational purposes,” Mayor Peter Scott said.

“In line with best-practice management of our public facilities, these upgrade works will provide a long-term solution to keeping our Wharf safe and enjoyable for many years to come.”

More research suggested on fluoride debate I, like many, are interested in the current debate around the fluoridation of water supplies.

We all want the best for the health of our community and therefore it is important that the council realise they are in a position of making public health policy.

Public health policy should be based on sound evidence for benefits versus harms, emotions and opinions should be taken out of the equitation.

Evidence based medicine is a skill in its own right that needs to be learned and understood. Those who tackle policy need to have the skills to interpret evidence effectively in the interests of all of those who are going to be affected by that policy.

The gold standard for good evidence comes from systematic reviews.

A systematic review is led by a body of skilled researchers who are independent and therefore have no strong opinions and thus can avoid bias in interpretation of studies and evidence and have the skills to critically review the available evidence.

One of the biggest systematic reviews of the fluoridation was undertaken by the York Review in 1999.

The comments from reading this review were stated by Cheng and colleagues: “Given the certainty with which fluoridation has been promoted and opposed and the large number of research papers identified, the reviewers were surprised by the poor quality of the evidence and the uncertainty surrounding the beneficial effects and adverse effects of fluoridation” and “Water fluoridation aims to reduce social inequalities in dental health but few relevant studies exist” and

“Estimates of the increase in the proportion of children without dental caries [dental decay] in fluoridated areas versus non fluoridated areas varied, the estimated could have been biased because potential confounders [hidden variables] were poorly adjusted for.”

That dental flourosis is a known harmful side effect of fluoridation is now not contended.

Its incidence ranges from 12% to 48%. However, there have been many studies proposing that fluoridation of water is linked to bladder cancer, increased risk of hip fractures from skeletal flourosis, Down syndrome and others.

The evidence for testing these hypotheses is also poor at this point in time. The nutritional status of many people has improved since the early studies of the 50s and 60s.

Dental caries has fallen in countries that do not have fluoridated water supplies in the same way as those who do.

The issue may be then - should we apply the precautionary principle which states that it is better to wait until we have all the evidence before we introduce something that may be harmful and may not provide benefit?

Indeed, this is the principle that many countries that have decided not to introduce fluoride have taken.

There are other issues noteworthy of a mention.

• Firstly - the fluoride that is added to water is not naturally occurring fluoride but flourosilicic acid, which is an agricultural industrial by-product which has many toxic effects.

• Secondly - fluoride is better applied topically in toothpaste and does not need

of poor food choices and availability.

I would like to end by quoting from Dr Weston Price, one of the most eminent dentists of the last century regarding fluoridation. “Fluorine treatment, like dental extractions cannot be a panacea for dental caries.

Much of the earth’s fluoride appears in igneous rocks and in amounts equal to phosphorous, namely one part per thousand.

“Its extreme toxicity, even in great dilution, has been prevented from doing harm by its very low solubility in water, namely thirty- seven parts per million for calcium fluoride.

“Even a small fraction of this concentration when present in drinking water greatly disturbs normal bone and teeth development producing the unsightly disfigurement of brown stain and mottled enamel (flourosis).

This curses people living in areas that have an affected water supply.

“It may ruin the teeth of grazing animals such as camels, making their teeth so brittle that they break off. Camels, sheep, goats, donkeys and horses are seriously affected in North Africa, thus making them

• Thirdly - dental decay is now a known marker for heart disease, which is one of the current metabolic diseases including diabetes, cancer and arthritis that are the progressive degenerative diseases of our time.

The prevention of tooth decay as well as these other debilitating diseases is fundamentally based on nutrition.

Thiamine has to be added to bread because it is removed in the refining process of food manufacturing. Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is found in the husk and germ of grains including bread and rice.

The food manufacturing industry refines this out and produces white rice and white bread. As for sugar - it is a drug and not a food (but that is my opinion!).

If we are realistically going to tackle the current health problems facing us now, those which are absolutely preventable, but which are increasingly crippling our health system and our economy, we need to stop applying band aid solutions such as fluoridation of water and the addition of artificial minerals and vitamins and start tackling the problems

Hydro-power scheme remains in pipeline COOK Shire Council has taken proactive steps to facilitate the installation of a hydro-electric plant at the Annan Water Treatment Plant with grant applications submitted, which, if successful, will fully fund all capital costs.

Mayor Peter Scott said if the scheme is successfully-funded and implemented, there will be an estimated overall yearly saving to Council of between $40,000 and $60,000.

“With electricity costs rising by about 20 per cent this year alone, this project will help offset the cost of providing services to our ratepayers for many years to come,” he said.

“As is reflected in Council’s upcoming

annual budget, a reduction in State and Federal funding and increases in expenditure have forced us to look at cost-saving initiatives throughout the Shire.”

He said the project would have dual benefits as both a cost-saving and green energy initiative.

“The plant has surplus water flowing over the spillway all year round,” he said.

“This project intends to harness this byproduct water to provide 100% of energy requirements to the facility, effectively reducing the carbon footprint of the plant by 365 tons of carbon dioxide annually and saving on electricity costs.”

Ergon denies rumours on removing generators ERGON has denied Cooktown community reports that it is planning to withdraw its back-up generators.

The Cooktown Local News had received unconfirmed reports that “the generators put here in case of a major power outage are likely to be removed, ostensibly because they haven’t been used for a while, but that has only been because of pure luck”.

It had been suggested the Newman government planned to use the “secret squirrel method” of removing them, with nobody knowing until it was too late.

Information from our informant was they believed that under the Newman scheme, the

provision of all these generators would be privatised.

Concern was also raised about a plan to shut down depots with less than five personnel and that, perhaps, Cooktown could be adversely affected by this decision.

These suggestions were raised with Ergon, and in a prepared media statement, a spokesman said Ergon Energy has no plans to remove backup generators from Cooktown at this time.

“This plant was put in place to assist with powersupply issues across the district highlighted in the 1990s when Cooktown depended on an unreliable coastal powerline as the sole source of its power supply,” the spokesman

said.

“Since that time a high-reliability transmission line has been built from Mt Molloy to Lakeland with a concrete pole line from Lakeland to Helensvale to provide a more consistent power supply to the area.

“This infrastructure has significantly improved reliability and network resilience for Cooktown and surrounds.”

THE results of Legionella testing at Cooktown Hospital will be known tomorrow (Friday).

A Cape York Hospital and Health Service spokesperson said testing has been carried out at the two hospitals within the Cape York HHS - Weipa Integrated Health Service and Cooktown Multi-Purpose Health Service.

“Final results for Weipa had been expected to be included in last Friday’s release of information,” the spokesperson said.

“However, due to the volume of work currently passing through the testing laboratories we understand these results will now be available tomorrow, when the final results for Cooktown will also be known.”

Testing throughout 63 public and 14 private hospitals comes on the back of the recent death in Brisbane of a patient from Legionnaires disease in Wesley private hospital.

Acting Chief Health Officer Dr Stephen Lambert said last week that positive Legionella results had been returned in Queensland hospitals, but there was still no risk to patients.

“Systematic testing of public and private hospital hot water systems had returned positive results for Legionella bacteria as anticipated,” Dr Lambert said.

“The detection of Legionella bacteria was expected and did not give cause for concern, reiterating the health of patients and staff is not at risk.

“I can confirm the testing regime has provided positive results for Legionella bacteria.

He said that of more than 1300 tests that had been undertaken to date, only 10 per cent have returned a positive result for Legionella

bacteria, and only four per cent have indicated the presence of Legionella pneumophila.

“I can also confirm we have detected high levels of the bacteria in some individual tests,” he said.

“Positive results for Legionella bacteria in a complex care environment do not necessarily mean Legionella pneumophila specifically has been detected, which is the bacteria that most commonly causes Legionnaires disease.

“It also does not mean a patient who has stayed there or staff are at an increased risk of contracting Legionnaires disease.

“We have not been notified of any cases of Legionnaires in hospital patients.”

He said Queensland Health believes there remains no risk to patients or staff following these findings.

Dr Lambert said where Legionella had been detected, the outlet concerned (such as a tap or shower head) was immediately isolated, with some facilities opting to replace the entire fitting although this isn’t compulsory.

Treatment involves flushing the system with hot water at 70 degrees Celsius or disinfecting the outlet. A

re-test of the outlet is then undertaken to determine if the treatment was successful.

Dr Lambert said an enormous amount of work had been undertaken across the State with test results of around one-third of the facilities completed this week.

“The tragedy at the Wesley Hospital has given us the opportunity to assess the risk of Legionella bacteria across Queensland,” he said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to commend the efforts of all our public and private hospitals.

“In response to our requests they have acted swiftly and been very cooperative and proactive in addressing this issue.

“I would also like to commend the work of public and private laboratories across the State in analysing the hundreds of samples gathered to date, and processing these as quickly as possible.

“It is a clear demonstration the health and safety of both our patients and staff is an absolute priority And at the end of this exercise our hospitals will have the cleanest water systems of any public health system across Australia, which is an impressive achievement.”

ENERGY and Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle met with Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council Mayor Clifford Harrigan last week to discuss a range of issues in the community.

The meeting was part of Minister McArdle’s tour of regional councils.

Mr McArdle said the get-together with Mayor Harrigan, Councillors and Chief Executive Officer Alan Neilan was a great opportunity to discuss matters in relation to his portfolio.

“This meeting was the perfect chance to gain further insight into the real issues being faced by the regional Queenslanders,’’ Mr McArdle said.

“Providing safe, reliable and affordable energy and water supply is vital to meeting the basic needs of communities and for the future development of Queensland.

“The meeting was also a chance to discuss the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council’s vision for the future of their community.

“The council put in a submission to my department in regards to the 30 year plans.’’

CEO Alan Neilan said the visit was a great opportunity for Minister McArdle to gather an appreciation of the challenges facing the Shire in regards to electricity and water.

“It also provides an opportunity for the Minister to witness first hand the terrific work undertaken by our Indigenous labour force, who are undertaking a career in water management,” Mr Neilan said.

“It was important to discuss the cost of electricity with Mr McArdle and how that impacts on Council’s service charges.

Woman killed in Cape Trib. crash A woman has died in a traffic crash at Cape Tribulation on Tuesday night.

Police report two women in their late teens were riding a motorcycle along Cape Tribulation Road when it collided with a tree.

The passenger was found deceased at the scene and the rider was air-lifted from the scene to Cairns Base Hospital with critical injuries.

 letters to the editor Humbled Denniss Roesler says thank you TO the people of Cooktown, IT has now been four weeks since my accident and I have had over 20 hours of surgery and various rods and screws inserted into my leg to repair the bone damage.

Monday, June 24, is 10 days since muscle and skin grafts replaced on my leg and all being well as it is, at the moment, with no infections, marks the start of my rehabilitation phase to recovery.

There are so many people to thank for their help, support and prayers.

Firstly my family, my devoted wife Diane, brothers Barry and Peter, sister Barb and partner Bill.

My daughter Krista and Guy, her husband, who attended the accident scene holding my hand, and of course, Trent my son.

A big thank you must go to Jason and Anna in Brisbane, whose generosity and assistance made Diane’s visit here possible.

Ross and Jum for the donation of the airfare, and also those who visited me in Brisbane, Mark, Di Bucklar and Andrew and Diana Davey.

Now, to the people who attended me, that fateful day.

Roy and Colesy, who also held my hand and gave me strength to carry on.

Most important of all Carl the medic, whom I believe saved my leg if not my life.

The Cooktown Hospital staff who attended me roadside and at the hospital, the Medivac people, Cairns Base doctors and staff, Careflight, The Royal Brisbane Hospital staff all whose service is second to none.

Now, to the people of a small community who have touched both Diane and my hearts and humbled us so by your generosity.

Council ‘fails to regulate and supervise’ RVs AS a visitor to your area on numerous occasions, I now notice you have allocated an area for RVs below the park.

This I would imagine entails self-sufficient units, those not requiring outside toilets showering or washing facilities.

Whilst there are toilets available in the park, there are no facilities for bathing,or washing machines.

Due to the folly of the council in not regulating the intent of the move, coincidently initiated on April Fool’s Day, I now notice the facilities of the adjacent caravan park being used without authority, for showering and the use of their washing machines, sometimes around 3am, which disturbs paying clients in the park of which I am one, and is decidedly

unfair to those people providing facilities for the operation of their business being exploited by those freeloading the facilities.

Apart from the presumed intent, I notice the area includes camper vans, campers and caravans with no obvious toilet facilities or

showers, which has resulted in children being exposed to people bathing in the raw in the park area, and also parking in this area, which I am sure is not designated for parking.

I am sure the park operators do not deny the genuine RV owners the ability to park in the designated area at a low fee, using the facilities they have, not needing to pay the higher fees for the facilities provided by the parks.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of cooperation of the council, this is getting out of control and should be addressed forthwith, otherwise I can foresee legal action being taken against the council on this issue.

By ERIC GEORGE ON the west side of Charlotte Street, above what we now call Anzac Park, stands the old station building, a relic of the CooktownLaura railway.

It is over 50 years since the station master sold his last ticket and shut up shop, but the building has been well maintained and is a part of our heritage.

It has found a new use as the home of the Cooktown Creative Arts Association.

It provides a focus for the arts and crafts community of Cooktown and, most importantly, a place to display and sell their work.

The shop is staffed entirely by volunteer members of the association.

On a busy morning last week, I sat at the front desk and chatted with two of them, Heather Willcox and Jan Forster.

They are both long-term Cooktown residents, having come to town 28 and 22 years ago respectively.

They started off by telling me what the association does.

“We give everyone who does art, or craft, or anything like that a chance to market their stuff.”

Is it just a marketing outlet, or is there more to the association?

“We have some courses.

Downstairs today we have a lead-lighting class going on.”

I am sure people will want to ask about the difference between the Creative Arts Association and the art gallery further down Charlotte Street.

“The art gallery is more for fine art, and we are for all sorts of art and crafts - everything.”

“We do all crafts - woodwork, quilting, knitting, jewellery, flower-making, pottery, they are all locally made.

“Everything that we sell in the

shop is local. People come in here and say this is one of the best art and craft shops they have been in all over Australia, and that’s not bull dust.

“We have a diversity of art and crafts people. There is not one particular stream of work.

“One guy does polished stones, there are croc teeth, basket weaving, handmade cards, pick pointing.

“We also act as a tourist information centre, because of where the official information centre is down at the PowerHouse.”

I am surprised that Jan, Heather and their colleagues can spare enough time from fishing to do any art.

“Oh, we fit it in. Between fishing and Hash, we fit it in.

“We have 24 current members and probably about 15 members exhibit their wares. Nine of us man the shop, which is open six days a week.”

This is tourist season and Cooktown’s busiest time of the year. How has it been for the shop?

“Pretty poor, in general. Takings from the Festival were the worst we have ever had. People are not spending money.

“We had a lot of people through, but they just were not buying.”

What things are most popular with the tourists? “The lowerpriced items. Pot holders, stones, post cards.”

Do they go for items marked, “A Present from Cooktown”?

“No, not really. They just want to take a little souvenir with them. Something that represents Cooktown but does not say so.”

What is more difficult for the shop, finding enough good art or finding enough tourists with money in their pockets?

“Tourists. The artists we have are constantly supplying. We have an over-supply. We could

sell 10 times more.”

Are Cooktown artists all older people? “No, we have younger ones. They are very busy - jewellery is very popular.”

How do the finances work for the shop?

“To sell stuff through our shop, they have to become a member.

“If they are a working member - doing a four-hour shift in the shop per week - they pay 15 per cent commission. If they are a non-working member they pay 25 per cent.

“It is a good deal and we have not changed it since we started.”

How does the association handle their overheads?

“It all comes out of our membership fees and commissions.

We don’t have any grants or subsidies. We have to pay rent, phone, electricity, insurance.”

The association is very much aware of the ups and downs of the tourist business.

“Most definitely. It’s our bread and butter.”

How do they feel about the new free camping area in the park?

“I think it is a very good idea.

It brings more people here, more money circulates, it is beneficial to the whole town.

“It makes staying cheaper for them, so maybe they will have more money to spend in places like ours.”

How do tourists find out about the association?

“They just come in. We re-

ally don’t advertise. We are mentioned on the RV site.”

Do they have a Facebook page?

“We don’t have internet or a computer. Any emails come through personal accounts.”

Would they like someone to run a Facebook page for them?

“If it didn’t cost anything, it would be good. We are in the Shire brochure but that is very expensive.

“It cost us $600 every year.”

The members clearly work very hard to keep their project in business and an asset for the community, so how can people help?

“By buying things from us.

They should buy their Christmas presents through us.We can arrange commissioned work through the artists.

“If you saw something and wanted it in a different colour, I dare say it could be done. We have things ranging from 50 cents to $1200.

“Electricity is going up, insurance has gone up and the rent - we have to find another $3000 per year for that alone.”

As we talk, a student from the lead-lighting class comes in with a magnificent, colourful kookaburra she made that morning, and is congratulated by everyone.

She is obviously very pleased with her creation.

“I am just really, really enjoying it,” she says.

Jan takes the chance to say, “See, one of the new people. We are trying to foster their interest in art by our classes. She is so proud of herself.”

In its understated Cooktown way, the association has made something very special and valuable for the town.

I will definitely be searching the shop next time I need a gift that will be cherished.

“The Tortoise By a Stream” Sometimes we’re like a tortoise while our stream of life flows by.

There are things we never seem to do no matter how we try.

We put them off a little more. We’ll do them all some day.

“No need to rush these things, you know,” is what we always say.

Our “Clock of Life” ticks slowly on. The cemetery draws near.

“Oh, stuff it all!” we say again and pour another beer.

But as Time slowly glides away and we sit there and dream We act much like a tortoise when he walks beside a stream.

If he sees something that he fears he sinks into his shell.

Because the danger can’t be seen he thinks that all is well But while he hides there in his shell the stream it hurries on.

When he peeps out from his shell again some tasty meal has gone!

So let’s face up to all the “jumps” and clear them as we go.

We don’t need future “traffic jams” as life goes on you know.

Let’s do the tasks we need to do before we’re out of steam And not be like the tortoise when he walks beside a stream.

THE following report comes from the Townsville Daily Bulletin, Saturday, June 28, 1913, and is reproduced here in part, and with original wording and spelling.

We would all hope that the whole approach to our Indigenous neighbours has changed over the past 100 years.

“The Chief Protector of Aborigines (Mr R. B. Howard), arrived at Townsville on Saturday in the auxiliary schooner Melhidir, after a lengthy tour of the aboriginal stations in the North.

“In conversation with a ‘T.D. Bulletin’ representative, Mr Howard said from Thursday Island he first paid a visit to Mapoon, on the western shore of the Peninsula, in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Returning to Thursday Island, a visit was then made to the Torres Straits Islands. At one of these, York Island, a native school had been established, and a teacher Installed, and this promised to be a great success.

“The main object of the visit to the Islands, however, was to select one for the establishment, or a Government settlement for the natives. The object of the settlement was to show what could be done in the way of tropical agriculture by the natives.

The settlement would be placed under the control of a thoroughly practical man.

Broad consultation and discussions have taken place to identify the following portfolio areas: • Local Government • Land Stewardship • Small Business • Tourism • Agriculture • Infrastructure • Mining • Community Development • Indigenous Business Development To facilitate this process CYSF has established an organisational change sub-committee chaired by Andrew Yeatman, a current board member, to facilitate the transition which is currently underway. Civilisation exists down south and you could even say it stretches up as far as Cairns.

Travel further and it rapidly fades. Once you arrive in Cooktown, you know that the necessary accoutrements of a decent life - such as cold beer and decent coffee - will come to an end if you stray any further.

Beyond Cooktown lies miles and miles of un-airconditioned bush, suited only to pig hunters, rabid 4WDers, fishermen and other jungle bunnies.

Any water you find there is likely to be full of uneducated crocodiles, and the “facilities” consist of a spade, with a roll of toilet paper if you are lucky.

Sure it is beautiful at sunset, if you can

ignore the sandflies, mosquitoes and snakes for long enough to take a photo, but the best thing about the Big Beyond is the feeling you have when you get home for a shower and a properly cooked meal.

It is the feeling of being the last bastion that makes Cooktown what it is.

We are a natural haven for the odd, the misfit, the artist and, quite possibly, for the person escaping from the boys in blue.

Suits me. It’s a great life. We have most of the stuff we need and I enjoy whingeing about the few things we lack.

No one bothers us up here because it is just too far away, too small and we are not even on the way to somewhere really interesting.

But they do come up for their holidays, because

Who cares if the tourists look at us like interesting specimens at the zoo?

That’s what we are, and the more “interesting” we are, the more money they will bring to town.

We just have to use our imaginations and be ourselves and visitors will love us and our lifestyle.

We are very lucky living in Cooktown - lovely home-grown fresh fruit and vegetables are plentiful, especially at the Saturday market.

Tips for getting 2 & 5 a day Look at your food diary - how many serves of fruit do you currently eat?; When are the times you could include more fruit and vegetables?; Is someone from work bringing in surplus fruit and vegetables?; and Are there fruit and vegetables growing in the backyard that you ignore?

Here are a few ideas to get you started: Slice fresh fruit over breakfast

cereal or porridge; Thread fresh fruit onto skewers and serve with yoghurt for a delicious colourful snack; Dice fresh fruit and keep in a container in the fridge so it is a quick convenient snack - this works great with fresh melon; and Freeze fruit by itself or mixed with yoghurt for a refreshing summer snack.

Benefits of fruit/vegetables Fruit and vegetables contain a wide variety of nutrients that are essential for good health including vitamin A, folate, vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium, iron, fibre, carbohydrate and water. disease, stroke and kidney disease; and Healthy babies - fruit and vegetables are a great source of folate. It is thought that at least two thirds of the cases of spina bifida could be prevented by women having enough folate one month prior to pregnancy and in the first three months of pregnancy.

What is a serve of fruit?

One serve of fruit is 150 grams of fresh fruit or 2 smaller pieces (eg apricots, plums); 1 cup canned or chopped fruit; ½ cup (125 ml) 100% juice; and 1 ½ tablespoon dried fruit (eg sultanas or 4 dried apricot halves).

Choose fresh fruit instead of fruit juice or dried fruit. Juices have lower

fibre content than fresh fruit. Dried fruit, if eaten in large quantities, can contribute to tooth decay because it contains a concentrated form of sugar that sticks to your teeth.

What is a serve of vegetables?

One serve of vegetables is 75 grams or: ½ cup of cooked vegetables; 1 medium potato; 1 cup of salad vegetables; and ½ cup cooked legumes (dried bean lentils and peas).

SPORT

Saddlebags’ craft and cunning SADDLEBAGS was our hare and hostess for this week’s run.

That’s handy, because she lives down town, but, on the other hand, it does mean she is strapped for choice when it comes to laying runs. There was a time when she pointed us all uphill and we would spend the next half an hour fighting our way up near vertical slopes until we reached the light house.

How times have changed!

Now she prefers craft and cunning when she lays her trails, and you can count on something interesting.

She started off on Flinders Street and then dived into the bush to pick an unofficial way through to Baird Street. On the trail went, zigging and zagging, until it reached the old railway relics behind the bakery.

Here we dived into the bush because Saddlebags had decided to show us the old railway water hole. She also told us about the turntable pit, but the long grass made looking for that unpleasant. Perhaps she can take us back later in the year, after a grass fire.

Back home along Adelaide Street, past the long line of happy campers staying in

Cooktown for free, and we were soon climbing the steps up to Saddlebags’ place.

Here we sat in the chilly Antarctic wind, drinking ice-cold beer. That was not easy to do, but Hashers are tough. You wouldn’t expect them to drink warm beer, would you?

Nostrildumass was GM for the evening, and quickly got stuck into Muff for getting lost on his way to the run, and Tuff for stealing Granddad’s cooler.

Then there was Offal and Sewezy who have been traumatised by a recent trip south and can’t talk about anything else, even when we stick our fingers in our ears.

Finally, there was Whizz for a proper stumble, and Granddad for talking politics on the Hash.

Then it was time for Saddlebags to bring out a rich beef casserole, which made everyone warm and happy again.

SPANISH mackerel, golden trevally and queen fish kept visitors busy around the Wharf and foreshore last week.

Russell James for Monbulk, Victoria has a great memory from Cooktown Wharf with a story about the one that did not get away, despite a tug of war with a grouper.

Russell caught a Spanish mackerel, about 25 pounds and 120cm long with a live yellowfin pike.

Luckily, Mick Schuele was on hand with a gaff and had to win a tug-of-war with the resident groper which had a good grab of the mackerel.

It unfolded into an exciting few seconds and drew a crowd very quickly.

Victorious, Russell filleted the mackerel and shared it with the crowd while the frame was given back to the grouper.

In the Annan River, queenfish have kept anglers busy from all vantage points - the Old Bridge, boat ramp and the river mouth.

If you have a boat, you just need to find where they are and cast a surface popper or troll a shallow diver around and the action will be on with an aerial spectacle involving fish up to one metre long. They fight hard.

Lure Casters have still been capturing the odd barra with a couple of 80cm-plus specimens in the mix.

Crabs are still around but although numbers are not huge, they have been full and tasty.

Grunter have been captured in both rivers.

Off shore, there have been some solid mackerel landed, along with coral trout and nannygai which have been amongst the catches from the charter boats.

The upcoming forecast looks windy, but there are some odd, calm morning expected which will happen

with the cool nights.

So an early troll for a mackerel in the leads could produce a good feed.

THERE is a full calendar of shooting scheduled at the SSAA Cape York Range on Cameron Creek Road for July.

And there are only two weeks left in which to finish preparations for the club’s two-day Northern Zone Sporting Clays Carnival which starts on Saturday, July 13.

Competition starts at 1pm with the 100-target Cairns Hardware Event, then on Sunday, July 14, the shooting action continues from 9am with the Marano’s 25-Target Handicap event.

But the club’s first scheduled shoot for the month, a Rifle Shoot being held this Saturday from 9am will be a prelude to that big weekend. For details contact Toby on 0438 695 663.

After the judging, it was then the spectator numbers started to dwindle gradually, with only a fraction left to watch race six.

Laura Amateur Turf Club President Greg Williams said that in past years it had become evident to him that the races drew either die-hard horse racing fans or those interested in a big social day out, punctuated by the opportunity to display their sartorial style.

The day was held in good spirit with no untoward incidents occurring at the races, but earlier in the day, Mr Williams issued a stark warning to those in the camp ground who could not respect the space of other campers.

“We’ve got a zero tolerance on that sort of behaviour,” he told the early crowd.

“We had it last year and will continue to have it.

“Only this morning we had the police eject three carloads of people and we won’t be frightened to eject more.

“People come here for a fun, relaxing three days and we’ll do our best to ensure they get it.”

The Three Rivers rugby league comp. in crisis ALL officials, players and fans involved with the Three Rivers Rugby League competition are being urged to attend a crisis meeting tonight at the Cooktown RSL Memorial Club from 6pm.

Discussion will revolve about the future of the competition following the rumoured resignations of the Secretary and Treasurer, along with a vow by some players that they were withdrawing from their teams after the last-minute cancellation of Saturday night’s games.

President Peter Scott said light failure at the John Street Oval which had made the prospect of play unsafe had forced the decision.

“It was both disappointing and unavoidable,” Scott said.

“Particularly when we had such a good roll up after the team captains and Kimberley (Secretary Gibson) had done a lot of chasing to get the teams together.”

Scott said after a joint conference at the ground between himself and Hope Vale representatives, Harry Bowen and Kaylene Bowen, the three agreed the field was too dark in parts and as such, insurance cover

would have been voided.

He explained that it appeared as though the light failure had been caused by cockatoos chewing through the cables at the top of the lights.

“We hope to have those cables fixed and bird-proofed within the next few days,” he said.

Scott said he understood the players’ disappointment with the situation, especially after a very slow start to the season until after player insurance issues had been resolved.

However, without a functioning committee, the future of the organisation remains in serious doubt.

“It will be a real shame if that happens,” Scott said.

“The first two years everything had run fairly smoothly, even to the point where the Cairns District Rugby League acknowledged us as being the best-run small competition in the region.

“I just hope we can sort this all out so we can get on and finish the rest of the season, learn from what has happened and go on to stronger and better things next year.”

Everyone’s invited to the track on Saturday for a night of fun COOKTOWN Amateur Turf Club is inviting the whole community to attend the drawing of its inaugural 100 Club, highlighted by “Racing with the Stars Under the Stars” in what is promised to be a fun-filled night.

Treasurer Barry Innes said that initially the event was planned as a thank you to those who had eagerly paid $100 to be in the 100 Club, which had turned out to be a fund-raising boom for the organisation.

“As well as drawing the 100 Club winner, we also wanted to show our support to those who had invested in it,” Barry said.

“But then we decided to open it up to everyone, because this club enjoys unbelievable support from the whole community every November.

“So we thought we would put on a fun night that everyone can enjoy.”

Barry said the feature of the night would be men’s and women’s handicap races starring some “specially-bred equine specimens” being ridden by some of the district’s best known hoops in the ‘saddles’.

“There are some real athletes among the female jockeys,” he said.

“The likes of Alana Wot Eva Go’z, Sarah Martin, Kelly Barnett, Sabrina Ebermann, Brook Prior and Alice Taylor will be strapping on their spurs.

“There were three late riding withdrawals from this field, but Lydia Barkley, Rebecca Kendray and Melissa Monkman

were quick to pull their crops out of the cupboard to fill those gaps.”

He said although the “blood lines” of the females were unparalleled, some of the men’s staying power was in serious doubt.

“Matt Carey, Ricky Jerome, Mick Murphy, Peter Russell, Glen Scott, Clancy Ganfield, Bart Harrison and Michael Czarnecki are the male hoops,” he said.

“But I don’t know how they will go, with reports they’re usually the ones under the whip.”

But is there any fear of corruption or rigging come time for the handicaps to be announced?

“None at all,” Barry said. “The stewards’ decisions will be final.”

Entertainment for the evening will include Calcuttas held on both races, an auction of “Black Caviar Shiraz” and meat tray raffles, while one-man band Col Fitz will be providing the music.

And a barbecue menu including steaks, snags and prawns will cater for the hungry, with lots of cold refreshments to sate the most intense of thirsts.

Chat with Matt G’day again, Well, it’s been a while since our last chat, but I have been going through rehab. after the arthroscope I had on my knee and working towards getting it right until I can play again.

The early forecasts for my return to the paddock were that I would be back in time for this week’s away game against the Canberra Raiders.

However, we don’t think it is quite right yet, so as a precaution, the plan is to come back next week when we play the Manly Sea Eagles at home.

I’ve been running on it at team training and it’s been holding up really well, but it’s after I cool down that it has been getting a little sore.

So in my case, it’s a case of being sure rather being sorry.

The last thing either I or the coaching staff want is to try and play too early at the risk of further damage and more time off the paddock.

I can tell you, I’d much rather be out there with the boys, but at the same time I’m happy not to be taking any unnecessary chances.

We’ve put together two good wins in recent games and we’re taking what we’ve learned from them, as well as a growing confidence, into Sunday afternoon’s game against the Raiders who are unbeaten at home this season.

It will be an exceptionally tough challenge, but in saying that, I’m sure the boys are very much up for it and hopefully, we can upset the Raiders’ home game momentum this weekend.

Anyway, I’ll continue working hard on my rehab. and hopefully you’ll see me back in the Number 1 jersey against Many next week.

Yindili reps perform well Story and photos

by ALF WILSON WUJAL Wujal Yindili rugby league footballers Johnathan Bassani and Brandon Christie were amongst Northern United’s best players in their 60-22 loss to Queensland Outback at Barlow Park in Cairns last Saturday.

Bassani lined up on a wing and Christie started on the bench and lined up in the forward pack when he came on in the first half.

They were picked in the side after performing well for Three Rivers at the RARL Far North Queensland Challenge at Cairns in late May. Players from the Northern Cape, Southern Cape, Palm Island Barracudas and Bowen teams which also competed

in the FNQ Challenge, were picked in the Northern United side coached by Kowanyama’s Dave Kennedy.

“Johnathan Bassani scored a try for us early in the second half and was dangerous when the ball got to him and Brandon Christie made plenty of ground when he came on,” Kennedy told the Cooktown Local News.

The game was not as onesided as the final scoreline may have indicated.

United started strongly and scored a try through Kowanyama’s fullback Fitzroy Lawrence at the third minute.

Luke McIntyre converted to give United a 6-nil lead and then at the eighth minute,

Napranum’s Eli Tabuai scored a four pointer.

When winger Mickeal Sibley scored at the 17th minute, United had bolted to a 16-6 lead.

But Outback rebounded to lead 24-16 at halftime after which it was one way traffic.

Kennedy said superior fitness had led to Outback winning so well.

“We only had a few training sessions in the two days before and the boys did well,” he said.

The match was played as the main curtain raiser to the Queensland Intrust Super Cup clash in which Northern Pride 38 defeated the CQ Capras 12.

Tipsters struggle again to find winners TIPSTERS again struggled to find winners in round 16 of the Cooktown Local News/ Hinterland Aviation/Inn Cairns NRL footy tipping competition on the weekend, No one got all seven, with six the best on offer.

The Tigers’ win against the Storm derailed most tipsters by as early as Friday night, with only two, Prickly and Harry The Bear being with the Tigers.
