‘Housing neglect’ cause of dangerous snake bite By GARY HUTCHISON

LES Gibson’s story is not just about a 75-yearold Hope Vale pensioner being bitten by a snake in his own home. It’s also a story of a ten-

ant who, for 25 years, has diligently paid his rent, but has had his continued requests for renovations ignored by the relevant state government department - more recently the Department of Building

Asset Services. And now, more than two weeks after spending a night in Cairns Base Hospital for observation after being bitten by a black whip snake, Les has still had to chase the

department to try and have security screens installed in his Endeavor Valley Road home. Mr Gibson admits he did receive a visit from two department representatives, but their

interest has stopped there. “After I got out of hospital, they came to visit and have a look around,” Les said. “They said they ‘would get back to me’, but two weeks later, I still haven’t

had a call. “So I rang them again, but I shouldn’t have to be bitten by a snake in my own home before someone comes to see me.” Mr Gibson said the

only maintenance done on his residence during the period of his tenancy was a paint job. “Even then it was a quick-in, quick-out.” Continued Page 3 >>

‘If in doubt, leave it out’ RATHER than remove the compulsory, unethical fluoridation of our drinking water altogether, the Queensland Government has now seen fit to pass on the decision to Local Councils, such as Cook Shire. For all the lobbying by pro-fluoride organisations, we all know that Australian authorities often make mistakes. Fluoridation is claimed to be safe, but so was Arsenic, DDT, Thalidomide, Dioxin, Asbestos, Agent Orange, the Dalkon Shield, Deildrin, Mercury, Lead and more recently, Vioxx; all shown later to harm or kill people. Dr Andrew Harms, former President of the Australian Dental Association, who facilitated water fluoridation into South Australian country areas says he deeply regretted his decision after he read the science and found that the fluoride being used was not a pharmaceutical grade, but a toxic industrial waste product. When he raised his concerns with the ADA, they weren’t interested and there was a lot of pressure on him not to say anything at all so as not to upset their principal sponsors, the toothpaste manufacturers. Likewise, when pro-fluoride dental statistics are quoted you won’t see Tasmania. With 91% water fluoridation for over 45 years, it still has the worst dental decay

water. We must not forget that if fluoridated water is used to grow our food, then we are receiving additional “doses” of fluoride of unknown quantity in our food, without a prescription, informed consent, regulation or monitoring. Sandy Jones, Cooktown.

Are fluoride levels in Cooktown too high?

rates in Australia. What then is the real agenda for getting rid of a toxic industrial waste that is illegal to release directly into the atmosphere or into the environment? Many recent studies have shown harm from ingesting fluoride, most notably, dental fluorosis (a sign of over-dosing and not just a cosmetic issue). There are many vulnerable people in the community such as bottle-fed babies (who receive the highest dose of fluoride), the elderly, outdoor workers (who consume large amounts of water) and those who succumb to the effects of fluoride as a low grade cumulative poison in the body. The wisest thing your Council can do for you, like many others, is to stop pouring more of your rates money down the drain and use the precautionary principle . . . “If in doubt, leave it out”. Monica Mesch, Researcher, Queenslanders for Safe Water, Air & Food, Redlynch.

HAVING reviewed the Cook Shire agenda and business papers dated May, 2013, I find the stated fluoride content is .73 mpl. When one checks the recommended usage for southern states from the N.H.M.R.C. Site, we find that at cooler latitudes the allowable limit is 1ppm, very close to 1mpl. As we go north the level lowers, possibly due to higher consumption figure or temperature difference. A guide however should be the allowable level at Townsville, which is .65ppl, (Brisbane it appears is smart enough to not fluoridate) Darwin higher up is .60ppm. Why is the level in the Cook shire 12% higher, rising to around 19 % if we go back to July, 2012, report? In my opinion, due to the damning evidence of the damages resulting from fluoride use, the Cook shire should opt out of this deceptive con on the people, and direct the funds and efforts to some other constructive issues, which I am sure need more important attention. No doubt the pressure exerted by Anna Bligh resulted in application of this agenda in the first place, and we are all aware of the fiascos which resulted from her administration, and the cost to the state taxpayers. B. Noyce, Cooktown.

Andy’s eye-to-eye

THIS week’s winner of a $25 meat voucher in the Cornett’s IGA Cooktown and Cooktown Local News weekly photo competition is a capture of an “eye-to-eye” Andy Hill recently had with a carpet snake on the side of the road. So often, catching that great image can come down to just having the good luck of being in the right place at the right time with your camera, which for this photo, was the case with Andy. Another snapper who is a prolific contributor to the competition, you have to wonder if Andy doesn’t take his camera to bed with him. His winning image now goes into the end of year draw.

‘Housing neglect’ cause of dangerous snake bite << From Page 1 “Three blokes came in and did a rushed, rough job in one day.” The snake bite incident unfolded when Les picked up some dirty washing to put it in the machine. He felt something move, then felt a bite on the “pinky” toe of his right foot. Initially he thought it had been a rat, but after taking a broom to the pile of washing, he found he had killed a black whip snake. With his house set well back from the road and surrounded on three sides by bush, Les said he is no stranger to rats or snakes in the yard. “It’s only been recently that snakes have been coming into the house,” he said. “I think they’re getting in under the doors where there are big gaps between the floors. “There’s no air conditioning here, so I need to leave the house pretty-much open for ventilation.” Les’s daughter Kathi Gibson takes the history of snake visits in the house further, recounting the experience of another family member a couple of years ago.

“He was visiting dad and sleeping on the lounge room floor with a sheet over him,” she said. “When he moved during the night, he felt something move with him, but when he woke up in the morning, felt something on his back. “He rolled over quickly to wrap it up in the sheet, only to find it was a taipan.” Kathi was the first person Les rang after being bitten. She contacted the local ambulance who subsequently transported him to Cooktown Hospital, where after stabilising treatment he was air-lifted to Cairns for tests, antivenin injections and observation. “When I was first bitten, my leg became totally paralysed, but now, my foot still feels a bit numb and swollen,” Les said. “And it gets maddeningly itchy at at times.” A resident and outdoor worker in the area his whole life, Les has grown up and lived with snakes, but doesn’t trust the venom they carry. “The snake that bit me isn’t supposed to be deadly to humans, but what people don’t understand is

that different breeds mate. “So what looks like a black whip snake, might be carrying a stronger poison.” Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council Mayor Greg McLean said his council was once responsible for the 33 houses in the area which incorporates Les’s house, but those houses are now under the control of Congress. Cr McLean called on both Building Asset Services and Congress to step up to their responsibilities in relation to the neglect of tenants’ needs in that area. He also said he wanted the state to realise that the original transfer of those houses was a mistake and wanted them to be returned to the auspices of his council. “All those houses out there need screens and their yards fullyfenced,” he said. “And it needs to happen ‘now’. “Building Asset Services need to step up to their responsibilities in this regard and Congress has to step up and start representing its people. “Those people have been neglected for far too long.” According to Mayor McLean, the state does not properly rec-

ognise Congress, so there is little likelihood of any resolution being obtained from them. “I think Congress has only met with the state (departments) once,” he said. “That’s why we want those houses transferred back to Hope Vale, we will give those people the representation they deserve and fight for their rights.” Gary Member for Cook Davud Kempton says the department has being managing this dwelling only since April 2008. “Prior to this the Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council was managing the property. Mr Gibson has been the tenant for over 20 years. “Mr Gibson only requested screens after the snake biteeincident, with the request being received on July 1, 2013. “We will move to have the screens fitted immediately. Hope Vale Congress Corporation currently owns the property.” Mr Kemptson says this incident is a reminder that there are snakes about and care should be taken “I have inquired after Mr Gibson and I understand he is well.”

Cooktown Hospital cleared of Legionella FINAL water testing results for Legionella bacteria at the Cooktown Multi-Purpose Health Service (MPHS) (at right) have all come back negative. Cape York Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Susan Turner said she was pleased no positive results had been recorded. Ms Turner said the Cooktown MPHS and the Weipa IHS both had been tested in response to a request from the Director-General of the Department of Health for all public hospitals to test for Legionella. “Weipa and Cooktown are our only hospitals and the only ones with inpatients that have to be showered,’’ she said. Ms Turner said primary health centres and clinics were not being tested as they were regarded as very low-risk as they did not have inpatients or inpatient showering facilities. “It is important to remember that Legionella

bacteria, of whatever species, always are present in the environment and are often found in very low concentrations in water supplies,” she said. Ms Turner added that that Legionella bacteria may exist in home plumbing. “The organisms may exist in the plumbing of your home where they do no harm because you are not vulnerable in the same way as a sick patient in hospital,” she said. “In vulnerable patients, some species of Legionella, such as pneumophila in particular, can cause pneumonia. “But it’s also important to remember that Legionnaires disease is not spread from person to person. “The disease is spread by breathing in tiny droplets of airborne moisture that contain the Legionella bacteria, which is why the risk may be higher if it is present in showering facilities,

where there may be a lot of airborne moisture, than in other areas.’’ Legionella bacteria of any type are detectable, and therefore become reportable as positive, when they occur at the rate of 10 colony forming units (cfu) per millilitre or above. Below that level, they are not generally detectable. Ms Turner said if no positive sample results were returned, a clinical response was not required.

Mrs Sullivan said the annual Reenactment brings recognition to the interaction of Bama with Europeans in 1770, along with recognition of Cooktown. “What happened here in 1770 is of great significance to Australia’s history,” she said.

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.

Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Locations that start from July 2013 Barwon region of Victoria ...................................People aged 0-64 Hunter region of NSW ............................................People aged 0-64 South Australia ......................................................... New arch to replace the old structure Where time goes in a busy term ANYONE worried about the demolition of the arch leading to Cooktown’s ANZAC Park can rest easy. The old structure is only making way for a new one. Cooktown RSL Sub Branch Secretary/treasurer Jim Fay said the existing portal was dilapidated and required yearly maintenance. “Every year our members have been doing patch-up work on the stone work,” Jim said. “With the concrete and stone falling away at various times and leaving the re-enforcing wire exposed to the elements, rust has set in.” Safety issues as well as aesthetics came into play when the decision was made. “With the ‘re-o’ rusting as it is, we can’t afford to take any chances with public safety and the prospect of it (the arch) falling down,” he said. Changes to electricity prices. From 1 July 2013, all customers in regional Queensland on the general residential tariff are paying more for electricity. The general residential tariff is now 29.40 cents per kilowatt hour. The service fee on this tariff, which gets deducted from available credit on your meter, will increase to 55.24 cents per day. If you have an electric hot water system, you may be connected to one of the cheaper Super Economy or Economy rates, which have increased to 13.60 cents and 19.85 cents per kilowatt hour. This extra cost means that your power card will not last as long. A $20 card may last up to three and a half days, and a $50 card may last up to eight and half days*. Please remember this when buying new cards. Your card meter will be adjusted for this increase when your meter reader visits in the coming months.

SUE Clark is a well-known local resident of Cooktown, active in the community and she has recently become a councillor. She comes from a farming family and has deep local roots. “I’m a local; I’ve lived in Cooktown for 40 years. “We grew peanuts and corn originally, and then we started a goat dairy. We still produce cows, grass seed and hay. “I went to primary school in Cooktown but went to Mount St Bernard in Herberton for high school because there was no high school in Cooktown at the time.” Herberton must have been cold? “The first year I was there was cold, but I got used to it. I remember the friendships. Twenty-four hours with your friends certainly makes good friendships.” When she finished high school, Sue faced the decision familiar to every school leaver - whether to continue in formal

education or try something different. What did she decide? “Not everyone needs to go to university. We still need people out there to do the normal jobs in life. “You can still make a living; if you are driven, you can still do well for yourself. From my experience, now they have to make the decision so young in school, grades nine and ten. “You have to make a decision about what to do with your future. Get the best marks you can at school, then if you want to opt for TAFE or an apprenticeship, or even sweep the streets. Maybe you need to take a gap year to give yourself some experience.” Sue decided to go to TAFE. She did a one-year general course and then chose plumbing. She worked as a checkout-chick in Cairns while she applied for jobs. Once she was taken on as an apprentice, she worked for three and a half years to become qualified. “Then I came up to Cooktown and worked on the Cooktown Shire Council water board for two years. Then I got married. In 1995 I had my first child and decided to take some time off to care for her. When she was three or four, I joined the family business. “At that point the business was primarily the concrete plant and earth moving, with a little bit of quarrying. We used to get gravel from the river which we screened and made into aggregate for the concrete.” Has business changed a great deal since then? “It has changed hugely with the quality stuff you have to do for Government jobs. “There is a huge amount of quality assurance to do. There’s a lot of major

Sue Clark - businesswoman and Cook Shire Councillor. projects now. Mainly Government, as private enterprise does not have the major projects or the money at the moment. New schools, major bridges, water towers. “The concrete work became more important and that is why we started the quarry at Mount Amos. We were running out of aggregate and we had to produce more.” Starting a quarry must have been a big adventure. “Yes. There is a lot of stress involved in it. It was something we had to learn. “My father-in-law has friends who run quarries, so we asked them questions. You need test holes, specialised equipment, it was all new. “We started off small and as production increased we got bigger and bigger. Still, the people doing the production have to know what they are doing. You can’t just get anyone from the street to run it.” Recently the concrete works was sold. Why was that? “My father-in-law and mother-in-law are ready to retire, and we don’t want to take it on, because it is a big commitment. “The other two sides of the business, plant hire and quarrying are enough to run.” Leaving the business aside, I asked Sue if Cooktown is a good place to

raise a family. “Cooktown is a very good place to raise a family, especially young children. The lifestyle, the kids can walk down the street and be safe. There is lots of freedom.” As many people realise, the question of where your children go for high school is an important local issue. “My oldest child has finished boarding school and one is currently there. “We sent them because subject choices were not available in Cooktown, and I think the quality of education was better at that time.” I asked about Sue’s youngest child who is studying at the new Christian College. “I’ve really enjoyed having her there. The classes are smaller so the teachers have more time for the students. “She has made huge progress in the last year and a half, and we are happy.” Sue was brave enough to stand for council last year. She just missed winning a place, but has been appointed since May to replace a councillor who resigned. How does it feel to be a councillor? Is Sue nervous? “Yes, I have been nervous. In the three meetings I have attended so far, I still don’t know the processes fully. It has been a big learning curve for me. I

need to catch up.” Why did she stand? “I felt that the councillors were not getting the information they needed to make decisions. “The information is fed to them from the Shire structure. When the Shire makes a decision that the councillors have to vote on, they have to try and foresee how the public will perceive those decisions. “I just shake my head sometimes at some of the decisions they make without going to ask the public. “I think that has got to do with the information that is being fed to the councillors to make those decisions.” I asked Sue about potential conflicts of interests in her roles as a businesswoman and a councillor. “I have to let people know that I have potential conflicts of interest. “I do try and put the Shire first when I am talking to people. I think we have separated business and politics pretty well in the past.” And the future? “Tourism will be here forever, and it is up to the businesses to work together and broadcast our message. We need more new ideas. “People have got to get off their butts and do some of the work themselves. There is only so much the Shire can do.”

COMMUNITY

Lions face a busy month in serving their community THE Endeavour Lions Club is gearing up for a very exciting month ahead with many activities and community support programs in the works. We will start with our annual Lions handover dinner on July 23, which will be held at our Lions Hall from 6.30pm. Endeavour Lions will once again throw their support behind Just 4 Kids on their journey through Cooktown. Just 4 Kids will be holding a charity auction at the Top Pub next Monday night, and we are encouraging locals to come along and give their support. Many of you may not realise Just 4 Kids have donated tens of thousands of dollars into the Cooktown community. We will also be starting off strong with the launch of our inaugural En-

deavour Lions Award which will be awarded at the Cooktown & District Show. The Club has been running this award for a number of years. It is designed to help young people who wish to excel in an occupation, sport or self- improvement program, or to travel to places to give voluntary service to others less fortunate, either in Australia and or another country. The Award can be structured to provide for a number of costs like funds for airfares and a certain amount of money for living expenses or equipment among other things. This year’s award is $2000, of which $1000 will be given by the Endeavour Lions Club and $1000 will

Don’t argue live longer A 20-year US study of married life has found that couples who do not argue are more likely to stay healthy and live longer than those who regularly have rows. Researchers from Brigham Young University in Utah followed nearly 1700 married adults, measuring their physical health and responses to regular surveys on arguments, happiness and quality of life. Money and the in-laws were subjects most likely to cause arguments. The researchers found that the more couples argued, the worse their general health. Happy couples were more likely to cook and eat healthier meals together, would sleep better if less stressed as well as encourage each other to give up bad habits such as smoking. “This study also shows happy marriages have a preventative component that keeps you in good health over the years,” lead researcher Rick Miller said. “The implication is that marital conflict is a risk factor for poor health. Couples that fight or argue frequently should get professional help to reduce their conflict because it is affecting their health.” His findings were published in the Journal of Marriage and Family.Previous studies link unhappy marriages with depression, anxiety, eating badly, smoking and not sleeping properly.

Saving your photos from fire, corruption

NOT many people are aware of it, but the first thing people usually rush to try and save from fire is their photo memories. But in this digital age, few people these days are having their photo memories printed and stored in albums. Usually they are entrusted to the hard drives of their computers, Ipads or phones. Disregarding the risk of fire and the impracticality of disconnecting a computer in the event of an emergency, computers have a bad habit of their hard drives either crashing or becoming corrupted. So the primary topic of discussion at next Thursday night’s meeting of the Cooktown Photography Club will be the alternate means of storing those life memories, so easily lost. Also on the agenda will be the subject of “photo composition” and how to ‘frame’ your shots for the best results ‘before’ pressing the shutter button. One other topic for discussion will be monthly assignments club members might like to undertake and present at future meetings for discussion. Cooktown Photography Club meetings are held at the Cooktown State School Library from 6pm on the fourth Thursday of the month with the kind permission of school management. The next meeting is Thursday, July 25. Members and non-members are all welcome. For further information contact either Chris Stewart (0400 685 542) or Gary Hutchison (0411 722 807).

Investing in our health workforce for a better state of health.

The Queensland Government is committed to looking after our health workforce. That’s why we’ve invested $1.35 billion in pay-rises for Queensland Health employees over the next 3 years. This includes a 6% increase for nurses and midwives since April last year, with a further 3% next year making a total of $592 million. A 2.5% increase for medical officers, meaning an extra $300 million invested across the workforce. And a 3% increase for employees under the Queensland Public Health Sector Certified Agreement 2011, totalling a further $466 million. We’re committed to rewarding the people who help us to deliver a better state of health. To find out how we’re providing a better state of health, visit health.qld.gov.au/blueprint or look out for our quarterly performance reports.

d e 100 Years On... 1913 Show visitors stay on to tour Cooktown area LIKE all politicians, Mr H. A. C. Douglas, M.L.A., at the Cooktown Show of 1913, delivered a long speech about the Cooktown area, and the show exhibits. Continuing from last week here, is more news of the 1913 Show and Races. Mr Douglas continues - “The agricultural exhibits showed that the Cook district could produce to perfection most of their agricultural requirements. Unfortunately, they had not yet got the settlers, but when they had them, the steamers would call to take their produce to southern markets . . . “As their representative he had, as was his duty, did his best to further the interest of the district, and to that end he had travelled over a good deal of its vast area of 72,000 square miles. “Their hall exhibits showed to some extent the unbounded resources of this vast district, and in the southern part they had a magnificent asset in the tin fields, which would stand to Cooktown. “But tin or any mineral could be taken from the ground, only once, while in agricultural It was possible to gather wealth year by year.” The speaker then referred to the excellence of the exhibits in the women’s Industries and school section exhibits, which showed their people and schools compared favorably with any district in Queensland. Referring to the pastoral Industries, Mr Douglas expressed the hope that meat works would soon be established on the banks of the Endeavor, their cattle was of high quality, while their locally bred horses were particularly suitable for the latter countries, such as India. The Herberton Model band secured the contract for music for the Cooktown show, and travelled to Cairns by train. The Harbour Master refused to allow more than the authorised number of passengers to proceed on the Flinders, and as the list was an unusually long one, owing to the Cooktown Show and Races, between 25 and 30 were left behind, including the Herberton Band. Fortunately however, Messrs Burns, Philp and Co. wired their Sydney principals, asking that the Montoro be allowed to call at Cooktown, in order that those left behind might go up by her, and this arrangement was eventually carried out. Cairns Post, Thursday July 31, 1913, reported that the aftermath of the Cooktown Carnival of 1913 was quite as enjoyable as the Carnival itself.

A large number of visitors from different parts extended their sojourn for another week, to view the many beauty spots, and they were well rewarded, as all kinds of sport and enjoyment was provided for them that week, namely, football, cricket, dances, picture shows, and last but not least, a euchre party, given by Mesdames G.A. Love and R. Elliott as a befitting finish to the gala time. The visitors who remained after the show and races included a team of footballers from Thursday Island, who although not carrying away the coveted laurels, for which they had come, enjoyed themselves right royally and made great havoc with many, a heart of the young damsels, who, it is stated, predominate to the extent of six to one male in Cooktown. O n their departure more than half of the townspeople gave them, a cheering “au revoir” at the steamer’s side, and many a longing sigh could be heard.

In a time of pay rises IN a time of pay rises, electricity pricehikes, and the struggle to make ends meet for many, there is comfort to be found in the Christian faith, which is about lasting longer than a lifetime eternity, in fact. From the Pulpit It is by faith we enter into a relationship with God and eternity in Heaven. Money (or effort) can’t buy these. (Eph 2:8-9) Beyond comfort, there is God’s provision. The Bible gives us many promises eg :- “. . . God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19) Further comfort is found in (Hebrews 13:5) -” Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” The quaint language of the King James Bible reads - “ Jesus said, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” (Luke 12:15) It’s great to have the things we need. Even greater to acknowledge and practise the command of Jesus when he said, “Seek first God’s kingdom and what God wants. Then all your other needs will be met as well.” (Matthew 6:33) What is required of us in seeking his Kingdom? Micah 6:6 says - “He has shown you, O man, what ‘is’ good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” The Psalmist wrote - “Delight yourself also in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way . . . Psalm 37:3-7. My dad taught me the value of 1 Samuel 2:30, “those who honour Me I will honour” (says the Lord.) Christians give their Lord first place and he honours them in his provision of our needs! NAIDOC DAY at BLOOMFIELD RIVER STATE SCHOOL By ROBYN FARRANDS IN the spirit of this year’s NAIDOC theme of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions presented to the House of Representatives in 1963, the Bloomfield River State School Community celebrated in magnificent style. “Students, staff, parents and community members engaged in various activities which students rotated through during the day. Central to the activities was the painting on bark of the school wide expectations: “We Are Safe, We Are Respectful and We Are Learners”, which was organised by Assistant Teacher and long-serving staff member, Norman Tayley. Other activities included a Tree of Life workshop run by Lyndon O’Reilly

and Vincent Tayley from the RFDS, a follow up Tree of Life graphics activity, painting with community artist Faron Nunn, and another very popular activity was drumming with School Chaplain David Kamholtz. It was wonderful to see staff and community members working side by side, valuing the vision and projecting its importance to students. Following the group activities, Ruby Winkle and Penny Winkle organised a student dance group which performed with the accompaniment of an improvised band of drummers, clapsticks and didgeridoo. This magnificent day of celebration, fun and community spirit ended with a lunch sponsored by RFDS and a cake to celebrate the occasion.

SUDOKU No. 157

Your  Lucky 

Stars

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A dream which you had last night will involve someone very close to you. Your relationship with this person is constantly changing. Think about why this is. Romance. You would appreciate your partner’s support for a recent decision you made. However, this was your choice and not theirs.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) This will be an excellent time for any group activities. You will be surprised how well everyone cooperates. Be sure to set a date for the next meet up. Romance. Don’t allow yourself to be held back by your partner. What the love most about you is your individuality and energy.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

FOR KIDS

A recent success only came about because of the help of your family. Don’t forget to thank them for their contribution and encouragement. Romance. This will be an excellent time for a romantic adventure. A burst of bravery will help you to make the first step. Be courageous!

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A chance meeting at work may help you to get ahead. Make sure that you are willing to take on the extra responsibility. Romance. A recent dream will help you to understand exactly how you feel about the present situation. Let these feelings be known to your partner and go forward.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A boost to your family life will come from an unexpected direction. Be prepared for a surprise! You may not be ready for change immediately. Romance. Your partner will be in a suspiciously good mood this week. Try to find out why! You can celebrate this together once they have told you.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)

You may be a little too strongly influenced by fantasy at the moment. Try to keep your feet firmly on the ground; otherwise you may be lost at work. Romance. Your partner may be partly to blame for the way you feel at the moment. Let them know what you think, without getting angry.

FINDWORD No. 157 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Try not to get too frustrated during your journey to work. If you are not careful, you will lose your patience and this could be dangerous for more than just you. Romance. You will be thinking about your partner all week, even when they are not around. Call them and you will feel a little closer.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

You will have a very clear idea of what you want, but unless you are able to explain your needs to other people, there will be confusion. Be prepared! Romance. Don’t get too wrapped up in your own thoughts this week. Your partner will be disappointed if you don’t communicate.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) You have been busy with work recently. However, you need to make time for your family and friends as well. Schedule some time off. Romance. Your love-life will soon be taking a turn for the better. A person whom you have put off a few times is still interested in meeting.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) This will be an excellent time to have a party. You need to find a way to unwind after your recent effort. Send out an open invitation and see who comes! Romance. Something your partner says will surprise you. However, make sure you didn’t misunderstand the real meaning of the message.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

You can’t win unless you learn how to lose.

– Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

SOLUTIONS No. 157

A social gaffe may not be so amusing for the person concerned! You will need to do your best to smooth things over. Apologise quickly and sincerely. Romance. You will have a lot of energy at the moment, and must be careful to put it to good use. Avoid overwhelming your partner.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) A recent dream which you had contained an important message. It may be a while before you manage to work out what it was actually about. Romance. Your enthusiasm will not be missed by the people around you. One important person would like you to give them a boost of energy.

DR Nancy Kaplan from the USA visited Cooktown with her family recently. She says formication is a condition involving an intense, irrational feeling of itchiness and tingling suffered by people who believe, erroneously, that ants are crawling over them. Why “formication”? In some languages, the word for “ant” is based around the latin formica. When early scientists started analysing ants, they found that those being studied at the time had formic acid. I prefer “faunacation” (I just made the name up) which is presumably the re-introduction of native animals after years of being hammered by the toxic cane toads. A much more appropriate rainforest activity! And what’s that to do with this article? People often ask whether green tree ants have formic acid in them, when it tastes like lime surely it’s citric acid? After several

hours searching, I can’t find a definitive answer and I’d be happy to hear from someone who does know. Green tree ants are the only species of weaver ants in Australia. Their colonies might cover several trees and/or bushes, so that’s why we often see so many clusters of leaves bound together. It’s their aggression in defending nests, even against members of their own colony, that makes them useful in biological control of other insects in trees such as mango or cocoa. Smeljia Lambert, a Daintree resident who also works for Mars as a cocoa growing expert, uses green ants for bio-control of a very destructive insect pest: “To keep the ants in our farm, we feed them with ham and make rope bridges between the cocoa trees”. Green ants are also carnivorous! Green ants as a food source or Indigenous medicine always excites visitors. Should we eat them whole, just lick the bottoms, or eat them at all? If we want to understand a little about Indigenous culture, then we need to follow the lead of one of the Walker sisters and at least sample a

Clays carnival declared a success Winners from the weekend’s Northern Zone Sporting Clays carnival conducted by Cape York SSAA at the Camerone Creek Road range: Ross Cannon, John Green, Kristin Williams (local club shooter), Steve Murphy, Jim Williams (local club shooter), Michael Edwards and Joe Meaney (local club shooter). Photo submitted. THE Northern Zone Sporting Clays Carnival held at the SSAA Cameron Creek Range last weekend was a huge success, judging by the comments from the visiting shotgun shooters, some of whom had not shot Sporting Clays before. As they shared in each other’s hits and misses there was lots of laughter and some frustration, but as the Acting President Brett Williams said at the presentations, it was a small but “elite” group of shooters, as he thanked them for coming to Cooktown to support our club. Thank you to our supporters: Marano Fuels, Cairns Hardware and Cook Shire Council as well as our trappers Shaun Law, Khya Witheridge and Connor Meldrum who did an outstanding job along with our club shooters Bill, Mario,

Karl, Peter and Ian who assisted in the running of the program. In the 100-target Cairns Hardware event, the overall winner was Kristin Williams. Other results were: A Grade - 1st Jim Williams and 2nd Ross Cannon. B Grade - 1st Kristin Williams and 2nd Steve Murphy. C Grade - 1st Michael Edwards and 2nd John Green, while the Veterans’ winner was Joe Meaney. And in the Maranos 25-target handicap event, John Green was 1st, Joe Meaney was 2nd, Jim Williams was 3rd and Michael Edwards was 4th, while Joe Meaney also took out the Veteran’s class in this competition. Members need to note that there is a change in times for this Saturday’s shoot. There will be a Rifle Practice

Toby wins 30-shot event

Members are also advised we will be holding our annual general meeting on Saturday, August 17 from 1.30pm. Janne Stewart Secretary/Treasurer.

at 1pm followed by a Pistol Shoot at 3pm. Then on Sunday, the Service Rifle shoot starts at 9am. For details, contact your Discipline Captains Gopher for Pistol on 4069 5379 and Toby for Rifle on 0438 695 663. At the recent monthly meeting it was also decided to hold a second Pistol Shoot each month, on the first Sunday of each month. More details will be available closer to the date. This is also a reminder that a copy of all completed Category H Participation Cards for the year ended June 30, should be given to the Secretary by July 31 for compliance purposes with Weapons Licensing. IF the 7-day forecast is correct as you read the fishing today, the wind has dropped from frightening to fresh around 15 -20 knots. Maybe it will be down long enough for the bait to school up again and bring a few mackerel back in around the Wharf. Even with 30-35 knots, some impressive fish have been caught, including fingermark, mangrove Jacks, trevally, queenfish and barramundi. The Endeavour River has also delivered some fingermark, queenfish and some solid barramundi, along with the odd mud crab, while the Annan has produced mangrove Jacks, bream, trevally and barramundi. The line marking on the new boat ramp has been creating some confusion. The lines marking the rigging area have been the cause, with a couple of close calls where “boaties” have almost backed their boat trailers off the edge of the ramp, so some new markings will be put in place - lining boaties up on the ramp. With building tides towards the full moon, some

great morning tides will give you a chance to land a quality mackerel or queenfish. Camera buffs, mark next Monday into your dairy. The low tide that afternoon is will be 0.2m - about the lowest for the year, so grab a high spot and snap a couple of photos and be sure that we will be looking to use the images for a good argument for up-stream dredging. Wharf anglers are being asked for some patience and tolerance as local guides are needing some live baits for their day on the water with clients. With a bit of co-operation, they will have a quick cast and share some bait if you need a couple of fresh lives. At this time of year the bait can be hard to catch any where except the Wharf, so spot the bait and Mark or Tom can get a net over some, and everybody can have a win. Co-operation and every body wins. Tight Lines Russell Bowman The Lure Shop

Moses knows about the rain NO one can say the Hash is not a highly educated bunch of folk, interested in history, politics and the condition of the human spirit. It is perfectly natural that this Monday Hash was held in memory of the fall of communism in Poland. Everyone turned up wearing some red and white, and Whizz even managed to wear a patriotic slogan in Polish. The weather did not look good. It was raining, and at 5.25 pm, the only person who knew the rain would stop was Moses, the Religious Advisor. It is his duty to ensure we run in the dry and, sure enough, by 5.30 pm the rain had stopped and the pack set off into the bush. This was new country for most, and halfway around Moses had laid a short cut for the aged and infirm.

When we got there, everyone looked at the steep hill and long wet grass and decided they were not that old after all. The entire pack took the long way home. Back home, beer in hand, we relaxed until Yo-Yo produced a quiz which plumbed our ignorance of all things Polish. We learned where Poland is, how big, how many people, and how to say Kosciusko properly. We also learned that 10% of Battle of Britain pilots were Polish, and how Polish forces finished the Siege of Tobruk after the Aussies had gone home half way through. Archive won the prize for the quiz, a hand carved stork (they bring the Spring to the Polish countryside). GM Thermo took control and we celebrated F*&t’s 1400th run,

Xtraktit’s 8 carton run (192), and Soggy’s 6 carton run (144). We punished Cracklin for not believing the Religious Advisor would stop the rain long enough for the run, and Nostril for being bowled out for a duck last weekend. Then the serious business as Yo-Yo brought out enough Polish food to feed an army. Soup, golabki, and poppy seed cake. We went home tired, and very full. Next week’s run is at Thermo & F*&t’s, and it promises to be fun. Just turn up at 5.30pm on Monday, July 22 to join in. Contact Moses on 4069 5854 or 0409 686 032 for details. On-on! Lye Bak
