Having a whale of a time . . .

. . . at the Show . . . and at sea

THRILL seekers got the white-knuckle, hair-raising, hat-holding adrenaline rush they were after on the Stars ride at the annual Cooktown Show at the Racecourse. JESSIE Price and her fishing buddies were about 15 nautical miles out of Cooktown on Sunday when they were gifted with about two hours of a dance show from two whales. “It was about 4pm, and we were fishing Big Unchartered reef when we spotted these two Humpbacks, which I’m pretty sure was a mother and calf,” Jessie said. “The weather had turned pretty awful, but it was well and truly worth the horribly rough trip home to watch this pair for so long!” Photo: JESSIE PRICE.

Show change to create an ‘iconic’ event THE format of this year’s Cooktown and District Agricultural Show might just be the embryo of what could become a very special, annual iconic event on the Cape York calendar. Held at the Cooktown Racecourse for what is believed to be the first time in a century, the venue offered just an appetiser of what the future holds,

panorama of marquees, tents, displays, rides, other amusements and the ring used by the equestrians for their program of events. Mayor Scott said the show exceeded all expectations. “It was a fabulous effort from all those involved,” he said. “And I’d like to put a special thanks

in to our visitors in their RVs; they helped a hell of a lot.” And he sees the travellers as a unique, untapped resource for future shows. “Those visitors ‘want’ to help, come ‘looking’ to help,” he said. “By next year, we need to be able to identify their talents and how to best use

them with rostering and such.” The courage shown by the Show Society, Cooktown Amateur Turf Club and Council in changing the venue and format for their collaborative effort has been roundly and widely applauded from within their ranks. Continued Page 4 >> Pictorial wrap-up Pages 10, 11 >>

ERGON is considering replacing Cooktown’s back-up generators with “more-efficient technologies”. Ergon Energy Acting Managing Regional Services Graham Lynes told the Cooktown Local News this week: “The incumbent generation equipment - while being a useful back-up option for most parts of the Cooktown district network more than 10 years ago - is no longer considered to be necessarily the best option for emergency supply in the future.” Ergon had denied it was replacing the generators as recently as last month. Earlier concerns that the generators were in line for removal were denied by Ergon in the July 4 edition of the Cooktown Local News. At that time, it had been suggested by a reliable source that “the Newman government planned to use the ‘secret squirrel method’

of removing them, with nobody knowing until it was too late”. An Ergon Energy spokesman said then there were no plans to remove the back-up generators from Cooktown at that time. “This plant was put in place to assist with power supply issues across the district highlighted in the 1990s when Cooktown depended on an unreliable coastal powerline as the sole source of its power supply,” the spokesman said. However, Mr Lynes said this week, when asked why the generators had been disconnected: “The incumbent Ergon Energy generators at Cooktown are currently disconnected to ensure the safety of staff undertaking works at the Cooktown Zone sub-station. “Due to technical incompatibilities between the old generators and the reconfigured network, Ergon Energy is now considering

if it is cost effective to reinstate the older-control capability when this money can be better spent further improving Cooktown’s entire zone sub-station facility and network,” Mr Lynes said. “There are other more-efficient technologies built and used by Ergon Energy in other locations to deliver emergency generation if or when it is needed. “The incumbent generation equipment - while being a useful back-up option for most parts of the Cooktown district network more than 10 years ago - is no longer considered to be necessarily the best option for emergency supply in the future.” Mr Lynes said the current high-reliability powerlines that supply the district have proven to be resilient and have delivered. “The ‘bad old days’ of poor power supply reliability in Cooktown due to vulnerable supply lines have long gone,” he said.

“Ergon will utilise new technology for emergency power if needed.” He said one new technology option for emergency power generation is Ergon’s designed and built “Pegasus” units which can be linked to mobile generation and connected directly to the high-voltage network. “This is safe and reliable emergency restoration technology that has been proven in the field,” he said. “There are also other options for distributed generation (connected to low-voltage sections of the network) in emergency restoration events which are used widely in other remote locations within the Ergon footprint. “Ergon Energy will, (as it has for many years), continue to work with local and state authorities to ensure appropriate disaster management options are in place for Cooktown.”

$475 a week pay gap

THERE is a gap in pay of $475 a week between Indigenous and non-Indigenous incomes across Cape York, according to a new analysis of census data. The data shows Indigenous incomes across Cape York at $394 a week or 0.45 per cent of the nonIndigenous income of $869. There is a gap of $432 a week in the Torres Strait with an Indigenous income of $457 a week or .51 per cent of the non-Indigenous incomes of $889 a week. Using data from the 2006 and 2011 censuses, Dr Nicholas Biddle from the Australian National University has analysed income differences for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, www.guardian.co.uk reports.

And the gap has widened during that period. Adjusting for inflation, Indigenous Australians’ average disposable income was $400 per week in 2006. In 2011, this jumped to $488, a 22 per cent increase. Despite this rapid increase, the income for non-Indigenous Australians increased by 25.6 per cent over the same period. While Indigenous Australians are earning more, the difference in pay has actually widened. In 2006, the average disposable income for an Indigenous Australian was 72 per cent that of a non-Indigenous Australian. In 2011, it fell to 70 per cent. Dr Biddle says this disparity is due to three things:

Reducing the barriers to education participation . . . is likely to make a significant difference.

• An increase in the percentage of Indigenous Australians in the lowest-income bracket, • Increases in the percentage of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in the highest-income bracket (1% to 2.2% and 3.9% to 6.9%, respectively), and • A massive increase in income for people in the highest bracket. The report also breaks down the results by region, with a large amount of variation between areas. You can see the data in an interactive map here. The lower pay gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians are concentrated in the south-east of Australia, whereas in central and north-western Australia the gaps tend to be higher. Education is highlighted as a

strong determinant of higher incomes. Income was higher with a higher level of education for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Indigenous males who had completed a degree had an income in 2011 that was, on average, 2.91 times higher than Indigenous males who hadn’t finished Year 12 and had no qualifications. Indeed, the results of the analysis of education prompted the author to note: “Reducing the barriers to education participation and completion will not completely eliminate the gap in socio-economic outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians (especially males). “However, it is likely that it will make a significant difference,” Dr Biddle said.

Local shelter to support women at risk WOMEN and children who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless due to domestic and family violence now have access to immediate temporary accommodation with the recent opening of a new support shelter in Cooktown. The service, which is funded by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services and managed by notfor-profit organisation Life Without Barriers, will operate from a four-bedroom property and service a broad catchment area covering Cooktown, Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal, Lakeland, Laura, Rossville, Bloomfield and Ayton and surrounding rural properties within the Cooktown region. Operations Manager for Life Without Barriers in Far North Queensland Amy Williamson said in opening the shelter that Life Without Barriers drew on its research into, and experience with, domestic and family violence.

“Through our experience working with the statutory child protection system, we understand the cycle of violence theory, the issue of gender, and the impacts on families and relationships from within the family,” Ms Williamson said. “The shelter would provide more than just immediate supported accommodation, but encourage women and families to develop and maintain strong, healthy support networks.” Referrals to the new women’s shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence are now being accepted. Access to the shelter can be through local police, clinics, DV connect (1800811811) and or self - referral through contacting Life Without Barriers directly, 24 hours/day (0458 592 314). THE two days spanning August 2 and 3 proved to be a winning period for Cook Shire Council employee Sarah Henderson. Topping the list was her selection as the Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year at the regional finals of the 52nd Queensland Training Awards at a ceremony held in the Cairns Hilton on Saturday night. She received the award for “outstanding achievement by a student who is due to complete, or has recently completed a traineeship in Queensland” for her Certificate III in Tourism studies, which she recently completed through the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE. Sarah said that, while she always believed she was a chance of winning the award, the quality of the finalists was such, that anyone could have taken to the podium. “When my name was announced, it was all a bit unbelievable at first; it actually took a few seconds to sink in,” she said. “Lee (Greaves her partner) and Katrina (Cook Shire Council’s Director of Economic Development and Community Services) and everyone else at my table was cheering me on. “It was all a bit surreal.” Cook Shire Council Mayor Peter Scott offered his sincerest congratulations to Sarah on her award. “Her win is just simply fantastic,” he said. “We’re very proud of her; she’s been a great attribute for us ever since she started. “ S h e ’s b r i g h t a n d

Rudie dons her dancing shoes for charity while Matty does his stepping on the field HER partner is well known for his talented footballing feet, and now Rudie Doyle is about to show she’s just as talented with her work on the dance floor. Rudie has stepped into the spotlight as a contestant in this year’s Dancing With The Townsville Stars and has plenty of support in her corner, including long-time partner Matthew Bowen and their two children Diaz and Matty Jr. The many weeks of practice she has been putting into the tango and jive with partner Rohan Prince from Dance Sensations will be put to the test at a gala charity night involving performances from 10 local celebrities at the Riverway Arts Centre in Townsville on Saturday, August 24. Rudie has set herself a Dancing With The Townsville Stars fundraising target of $10,000, which will be donated to Ronald McDonald House North Queensland and their plans to build a family room at the Townsville District Hospital. “It’s a cause close to my heart,” Rudie said. “Matthew is ambassador for Ronald McDonald House and we’ve had members of our extended family stay there when they’ve had kids in hospital. “Hopefully we’ll get to my target which will help Ronald McDonald House with their family room project that’s going to benefit Townsville families who are going through the difficult period of having someone in hospital.”

The Ronald McDonald House family room is scheduled to open in August 2014 and will be equipped with day beds, televisions, lounges and play equipment to make families feel more at home when a loved one is receiving hospital treatment. “It’s a normal environment in an unnatural surrounding,” Ronald McDonald House North Queensland chairman Paul Rissman said. “It’s going to be a huge benefit for Townsville families who are going to use the local hospital more often once all the new developments are complete. “For many young local kids, their time in hospital will now be in Townsville, not Brisbane, and we need something like the family room to be there to allow families the chance to be close by, in comfort, instead of making what can be a time consuming trip home and back so regularly.” Rudie says Matthew’s football skills are superior to her dancing talents, but Dancing With The Townsville Stars insiders aren’t so sure. << From Page 1 Lou Norgard, one of the Chief Stewards, said she was very grateful to all those who had worked so hard and so tirelessly for making the show the success it was. “It took a lot of hard work to pull it all off; there was only a handful of us. “And I’d especially like to thank the Cooktown Amateur Turf Club for their wonderful co-operation and involvement and providing us with a great venue to host the Show.” Lou said one very pleasing aspect of feedback she had received was in relation to the food served and the response from the vendors. “I worked the gates for two days and everyone was saying how lovely the food was, while all the vendors at the ground have vowed to return next year because they were delighted with the support they received from patrons,” she said. It was pretty much a mutualadmiration society with Cooktown

Amateur Turf Club President Peter Staig congratulating the Show Society on the great job they did. He also highlighted what can be achieved when everyone works together for a mutual good. “Between the Show Society, the Shire Council and us, I think we were able to showcase a truly wonderful event. “And I think its success will help put the Shire in the forefront when it is applying for grants for the upgrade of facilities and in holding similar events.” About 3500 went through the gates, which was a significant increase on previous show attendances, but the number of exhibits submitted for judging was slightly down. Cook Shire Council Community Services Manager Vicki Kirk offered the opinion that this may have been caused by the early date the show was run. And other than poultry, there were no other animal exhibits, which was put down to late entries not being accepted.

Criticisms of the show were generally constructive, with those offering them accepting that it was the first year of being held at the Racecourse and that it will take many years of growth and fine-tuning to address their issues. RV traveller Tony Woods from Maroochydore said it was a great venue, although a bit windy, with his criticism being the uneven surface for parking. “Other than that, it’s just great. The people have all been lovely and we’ll definitely be back next year.” However, the main criticism was that the marquees in which the exhibits were displayed were too dark and too hot. And while it was a fair criticism, the issue will not have an overnight fix and will require years and lots of money before it can be addressed. One suggestion which, if put into action, could be a partial solution. “We have the Old Shire Hall that could be relocated to the Racecourse as a pavillion,” Mayor Scott said.

Not only that, they thought the CLN deserved some celebrity exposure. “We had to take the Local News to Buckingham Palace because we believed it deserved royalty,” Reshmi said. Patricia Dibben attended bride Hayley Dawson who married Robert Wood, whose best man was Steven Dibben in a surprise ceremony conducted by local civil celebrant Bev Stone at the Cooktown Caravan Park on Tuesday, July 30. The ‘surprise’ was actually for their friends and neighbours who travelled with the couple on their holiday to Cape York from Gawler in South Australia. The guests have known the wedding has been in the making for about two years, but they only found out on Monday night when the couple broke the news. Photo: GARY HUTCHISON.

Re-enactment Association can now light the barbecue COOKTOWN’S Re-enactment Association operations and social occasions have been given a boost with the announcement of a $2199 grant through the Australian Government’s 2013 Volunteer Grants program. That money will go towards the purchase of a barbecue, demountable shelving, a public address system and a whiteboard. The Re-enactment Association is one of eight community organisations on Cape York and in the Torres Strait/Northern

Peninsula Area to have been awarded nearly $37,000 through the program. Senator for Queensland Jan McLucas said the deserving organisations received grants ranging from $1000 to $5000 to help volunteers meet the rising costs of running a not-for-profit organisations in their community. CYSF board ushered in with new structure

At the recent Cape York Sustainable Futures networking at the Sovereign Resort Hotel were: ABOVE LEFT: Cape York Sustainable Futures Chief Executive Officer Trish Butler with Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott. ABOVE RIGHT: Monique Bowman and Sayah Scott. BELOW LEFT: Andrew Hartwig and Penny Johnson, Cook Shire Council Deputy Mayor and Deputy Chair of CSYF. BELOW RIGHT: Bart Johnson and Bob Sullivan.

CAPE York Sustainable Futures ushered in a new board and a new organisational structure last week in a bid to meet the growing needs of the not-for-profit association. “The recent organisational restructure which has taken place over some months was undertaken as part of a Queensland Government project that has enabled CYSF to remodel its business structure to further understand the regional development needs of the people of Cape York Peninsula,” said CYSF Chair Andrew Yeatman. “It is the dawning of a new era in many respects for the 26-year-old organisation. This has given us the opportunity to attract a wide range of knowledge and skills that will enable us to achieve community development and a sustainable economy, while meeting both current and future cultural and environmental aspirations.” Broad consultation and discussions took place prior to the new board being voted in. The follow-

ing key portfolio areas were identified as part of the consultation process to best represent the people of Cape York Peninsula on a long term basis: Local Government, Land Stewardship, Small Business, Tourism, Agriculture, Infrastructure, Mining, Community Development, Indigenous Business Development. Board representatives in the Local Government sector include: Penny Johnson (Cook Shire Council), Peter McCulkin (Weipa Town Authority), Dereck Walpo (Aurukun Shire Council) and Ernest Madua (Napranum Shire Council). Other sectors and their representatives include David Mailman (Land Stewardship), Mike Hintz (Tourism & Small Business), Jodi Hamilton (Agriculture), Cape Alumina’s Neville Conway (Mining), Bob Sullivan (Infrastructure), Andrew Yeatman and Paul Piva (Community Development) and Gillian Mailman (Indigenous Business Development.

It means we can invest more in our workforce and the great job they do every day, because every Queenslander deserves a better state of health. Everyone pulling on the same rope DID you go to the Show? I know half of the town gets cranky and take the opportunity of the long weekend to get out of town, View but didn’t they miss out! from For once it seemed that Cooktown the Hill was all pulling on the same rope. That’s pretty rare, but to have them pulling on the same rope “in the same direction” is absolutely unheard of. I don’t know what got into us, but this year the town show was bigger, better, brighter, tastier, artier - whatever positive adjective you can think of. The race course has been trying to convince us that they are a public asset once again, and they certainly proved that. The centre of the course is a pretty big space, and it was pretty well full. Half was covered with more RVs than you could poke a stick at. Another half was for parking cars (and no one thought of charging for the privilege). A third half - or possibly more - accommodated the Horse Sports arena, fairground rides and stalls selling everything from hand-crafted quilts to spring rolls to feral weeds. At least, I think they were selling feral weeds - there were a lot of advertisements for them and earnest young sales people. I steered clear so they couldn’t grab me. You paid $5 to get in, and the showground was your oyster. I defy even the most-miserly Cooktowner to have escaped with his wallet intact. If you weren’t going to buy something for your tummy, or to hang on the living room wall, there were plenty of good causes to tempt you. The Horse Sports were fun, there were some lunatics making their motorbikes fly, another bunch of loveable nutters driving vintage tractors, cakes pies, clothing, fireworks, parties . . . wonderful. You know what really, “really” impressed me? Our Shire. They didn’t put a foot wrong and, for once, I think I went for a whole day without hearing anyone whinge about the Shire. Really, and that from a town of champion whingers. How often does that happen?

DECIDING on a weekly winner in the Cornett’s IGA Cooktown and Cooktown Local News has been difficult since the competition first started. Since then, we’ve continually received some fantastic images taken by a number of amateur photographers on a variety of different cameras. And last week was no different with nature photos, seascapes and portraits among the entrants. In fact, it was almost impossible to decide on the winner of the $25 meat voucher, with each and every one of them deserved of winning. But the final decision ended up being based on an appropriate title for the photo, with David Cass’ image titled, “The Two Of Us” getting the gong. Photographers are reminded they now have until 5pm today, August 8 to submit their entries for this week’s stage of the competition.

COOKTOWN SHOW GOES OFF WITH A BANG

Last weekend saw the first Cooktown & District Country Show (in its present form) held at the Cooktown Racecourse, over two full days. By all accounts, the event was a resounding success with many new and exciting additions for visitors to enjoy. So many wonderful attractions and displays – vintage tractors, a military museum, freestyle motor-cross stunts, everyone’s favourite animal nursery, big rides and amusements, Timmy the Train, heaps of market stalls from near and far, and who could forget that amazing fireworks display!

Locals were treated to a taste of ‘city food’ with Subway and Cold Rock Icecreamery present for the first time. Entries in the horse events drew record numbers with the facilities available to showcase these events, better than ever before. Entries in other fields were both up and down but overall, organisers and stewards were pleased and very impressed at the talent exhibited across all competition sections. Look out for a full wrap-up and thank you advert which will appear in next week’s Cooktown Local News.

e CAPE YORK NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT LTD Board Appointments – Call for nominations

Cape York NRM is seeking nominations for appointment to its Board of Directors. We have successfully delivered natural resource management outcomes by supporting and funding on-ground projects and operations across Cape York since 2010. Our board has ten Sector Directors. In line with our constitution, this year all board positions will be declared vacant and are open for nomination. The sectors are: Indigenous Sector Zones 1-4 (see map) Local Government Sector Primary Industry Sector Other Industry Sector (Mining, Tourism, Small Business) Community Sector Conservation Sector

Coen in 1908. Photo submitted. By JAMES DICK in the “P.D. Record” LAST week we ended up with a look at the success of the Chillagoe Co.’s railway line which had brought business to the Cairns-Mareeba area, as well as being the means of turning the Cairns-Mareeba railway into a profit earning concern and a national asset, instead of an annual drain upon the exchequer. Continuing now with James Dick’s vision for Cape York. “The facilities for the construction of a railway along the telegraph line of route through the Cape York Peninsula are similar, to those existent in connection with the Chillagoe railway, but the line to which I refer has greater advantages than the Chillagoe line, and would prove much less costly per mile for construction. The railway line which I am now advocating the construction of would start from the Laura, and be a continuation of the Cooktown-Laura railway, developing and centralising another inland town. It would create a great seaport at Cooktown, and make the present railway line from Cooktown to

Laura as remunerative as the railway from Cairns to Mareeba has become. A railway through the Peninsula would have the additional advantage of offering facilities for commencing the work of construction from both ends, the northern-most end of the line being at Somerset, thus- creating another town, and greatly increasing the importance of Thursday Island as a seaport. This railway line should utilise one half of the cleared route of the existing telegraph line wherever practicable, thus considerably lessening the cost of its upkeep, besides lessening the cost and very greatly facilitating the construction of the railway. The expense entailed by the erection of a telegraph line would be avoided, as the present one could be so arranged with more offices, thus saving a big item of expense to the company constructing the railway, and considerably increasing the revenue of the Post and Telegraph Department of the Commonwealth Government. The whole length of the line would be something like 500 miles, and it would run right through the centre of the Cape York Peninsula

from south to north on an easy grade, embracing within an easy radius of fifty miles much of the eastern and western watersheds, nigh on to the coast, and touching in places. First stage - After leaving the Laura proceed, to Musgrave E.T.O. about 60 miles. This section of the route would embrace within its radius upwards of a hundred station blocks, of which Fairview, Brixton, Koolburra, Lakefield, Breeze, and Laura are the principal ones, with large herds of cattle and two goldfields, the Alice River and Pottallah Creek, both of which are large and undeveloped reefing fields, scarcely touched, but of great promise as mineral fields when greater and cheaper facilities of carriage are afforded, and the investor of capital has a better prospect of securing dividends. There is also a big antimony lode, discovered by John Dickie, near the line of route, awaiting more easy and cheaper means of transit for the product to port, and there is a wide tract of mineral country on the heads of the Coleman . . . unreadable . . . that is known to contain gold and other minerals, but is too far inland at present.

Driving offences will see two face court DRIVING offences committed during the weekend will see two locals facing the magistrate at the next sittings of the Cooktown Magistrates Court on September 5. On Saturday, August 3, a 69-year-old Cooktown

man was charged with drink driving after he was intercepted driving with a blood alcohol percentage of .115%, then on Sunday, August 4, a 31-year-old Rossville man was intercepted and subsequently charged with having driven while disqualified.

Nominations must be received by Monday, September 9, 2013. Where there is more than one nomination for a sector, members of that sector will be invited to vote by secret ballot. An Independent Returning Officer will be appointed to oversee nominations and voting. For more information and an information package detailing Sector Director selection criteria, please contact Vicki Wundersitz on 1300 132 262 or email admin@capeyorknrm.com.au Our mission: Helping people to work together to care for the natural environment and to promote the sustainable use of Cape York’s natural resources.

RECRUITING NOW Secondary School Scholarships 2014 Students from Cape York, Palm Island and Yarrabah are eligible to apply The Academic Leaders Secondary Program helps talented Indigenous Australian students attend Queensland’s leading boarding schools and graduate with a standard of excellence. The program offers excellent education and personal development opportunities - strengthening students academic grades, social and emotional capabilities, enabling them to go on to prosper, within the workforce and life.

How do we find favour with God? Psalm 101:1-4 ONCE we have the favor of God through salvation, does it matter how we act? The Bible responds with an emphatic “Yes!” and gives us numerous examples of Godly lives to consider. • Noah responded to God by walking with Him daily. And our Father responds positively to those who walk closely with Him, live by His Word, and listen carefully to His Holy Spirit. For those of us who believe, that means not only making scripture a vital part of our lives but also learning who God is and what He likes. How well do you know Him?

• Moses, despite initial protests, chose to obey the divine call and live life God’s way. The Lord favors followers who choose His preferences over their own - that is, those who think about their life in terms of pleasing Him. This requires learning to think as He does. How closely do your thoughts align with His? • Paul, after his conversion, lived with the single-minded focus of serving Jesus. He sought to do his best by means of inward and outward obedience. The Lord favors those whose hearts are bent toward Him. Do others see that your life is centered around Christ? • Mary responded with trust and

did not doubt when the angel announced that she would give birth to the Mes- From the Pulpit siah. God extends His blessings to those who choose to believe even when evidence says otherwise. How much do you trust the Lord? We find favor with our heavenly Father through believing minds, responsive hearts, and obedient spirits. Won’t you let this increasingly become the description of you? God bless ‘ya heaps! Have an awesome week! Pastor Wayne Brennan Cooktown Community Church.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Don’t avoid taking a risk just because your friends feel that you are unlikely to succeed. You may have more ability than they think! Romance. It is important that you continue to do some of the activities you did when you were single. You need to keep up your skill.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) You get annoyed when friends fail to take the initiative regarding meeting up with each other. Test them to see how long they would wait before calling you. Good signs - the Kiwis speak out Story and photos By MIKE D’ARCY SERENDIPITY - well, it just happens. We had dropped in to Cape Tribulation Beach for an (unusual) early morning look around, and came across Kane launching his surf ski to pick up Ocean Safari for the daily snorkeling reef trip. Chatty Kiwis Denise and Graham Rog-

ers quickly discovered a mutual background. Kane had worked for three years just around the corner from Pohara, Golden Bay New Zealand, where the Rogers live. Cards, best wishes and eternal friendships were exchanged, and the warm glow from the Kiwi couple continued all day. Graham and Denise enjoy regular walking/ tramping, boating, motor

bike riding and geology and ecology around the amazing Abel Tasman National Park near Nelson on the South Island. And we didn’t discuss Rugby. All of which makes their thoughts about tourism in the area very welcome: “Within a few hours on our tour, we met Kane from Ocean Safari; saw a mound with a bird (an orange-footed jungle

fowl) and had its unique story explained; saw strangler figs, elkhorns, peppercorn vine, nutmeg tree, pencil cedar, Cowie Beach, coconuts eaten by white-tailed rats, native bananas, fig trees with figs on the trunk, huge mango trees, kingfishers, ibis, pheasant coucal, termite mounds, kangaroo tail flower spikes, African tulip trees with brilliant orange flowers, tamarind

Week 8 Challenge Salt This week’s goal is to reduce salt/sodium in your diet. Here are some “salty facts”: Many people eat more salt than they need. Processed and packaged foods are the major source of the salt eaten in Australia. • Table salt has two minerals, sodium and chlorine. • Salt is used to preserve and flavour foods. • 40 per cent of salt is made up of sodium. Most of the salt eaten today is not salt added to food in the home, but salt found in processed and packaged foods. The amount of these foods eaten has increased greatly in recent times and because of this, Australians now eat more salt than they did in the past. Eating more salt is a concern as it may increase the risk of developing high blood pressure. The liking for salty foods is something that is learned. It is also possible for taste buds to get used to eating foods without added salt

over time. So be patient and over a few weeks you won’t even miss the salt. Tips for eating less salt/sodium • Check the label to help you choose healthier breakfast cereals. Try puffed wheat, or muesli with no added salt; • Make your own stock and gravy, instead of using cubes or granules, or look out for reduced-salt varieties; • Make sauces using ripe flavorsome tomatoes and garlic. Use black pepper as seasoning on pasta, scrambled egg etc. instead of salt; • Choose no added salt; salt reduced or low salt canned foods, bread and margarine; • Add herbs and spices to food in place of salt; • Try not to add salt automatically when you are cooking or about to eat. Often people only use salt out of habit;

• Marinate meat and fish in advance to give them flavour. Use garlic, ginger, chili and lime in stir-fries; • Go easy with ketchup, soy sauce, mustard, pickles and mayonnaise - these can all be high in salt; • If available, try the no added salt version of the sauce you like; and • If you are choosing a ready meal or a readymade pasta sauce, compare different types and choose the one that is lower in salt, check that the manufacturers have not compensated the lower salt versions by adding increased sugar. This is the last of the 8 Weeks’ Challenge, so close to finishing! You see it wasn’t that hard was it? Just eight small changes to a healthier lifestyle without the use of the horrible ‘D’ word . . . . ‘Diet’. Why Fluoridation

should stop WATER FLUORIDATION IS MASS MEDICATION DENYING CHOICE & INFORMED CONSENT Fluoridating water is FORCED medication done with NO prior assessment of individual’s health problems, NO control over dose except for thirst and NO follow up - ever. Water fluoridation is harmful - 25 % of NSW children in fluoridated areas now exhibit Dental Fluorosis ( NSW 2007 CDHS ) Dental Fluorosis is a sign of early fluoride toxicity. Bottle fed babies receive over 100 times more fluoride than breast fed babies if fluoridated water is used to make up Infant Formula.

There are now 36 human studies linking Fluoride exposure at only moderately raised levels to lowering of IQ– this finding confirmed in a 2012 Harvard University Review.

Di’s husband, named Don, Said, “Hey, Di, the food is all gone! Like old mother Hubbard I’ve been to the cupboard And all I can find is one stale scone!” Una’s dear husband was Bert. He said, “This new horse is a cert!” He came home from the race very red in the face ‘Cause he lost all his cash and his shirt. One of our writers is Lennie. She said, “Tonight my thoughts aren’t worth a penny. I’m usually fine with one glass of wine But, tonight, I’ve had just one too many!”

Fluoride accumulates in the brain’s Pineal gland and also in the bones - long exposure may increase bone brittleness. Fluoride is an Endocrine Disruptor, ingestion may lower Thyroid activity. For other adverse health effects visit www.fluoridealert.org NO Health Risk Assessments or Environmental Impact Statements were done by the Qld government before forcing fluoridation on Queenslanders.

Writers’ Corner

95% of the world’s population do NOT fluoridate their drinking water - yet according to WHO data have equivalent dental health to the few heavily fluoridated countries. It is now widely acknowledged the main action of fluoride is topical - as when it touches teeth as in toothpaste - there is no need to swallow fluoride. Most Western European countries do not fluoridate water because of health concerns and acknowledgement that water fluoridation is unethical mass medication.

EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT OF CHOICE

Triumphant return A GOOD field competed in last week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford competition and it was good to see Mick Mason back having a game, with him being the winner for the week with 38 Stableford points. Paul Haley was the runner-up with 34. It was a time for the ladies to shine in the Peninsula Caravan Park Bisque Par competition last Saturday. Carol McKinna was the star of the show with her score of plus-9. Next in line as runner-up was her playing partner, Marilyn Clark, who returned a score of plus-7. Nearestthe-pins were landed by Kate Thomson for 2/11 and Rick Butler for 9/18. Robyn McDonald also had a great game and won the Alice Burton Birdie’s Nest for 6/15. Well done Robyn. A good field of members competed in the Cape York Tyres Sunday 9-Hole Stroke competition last week, which was being played off the white tees. Pete Gunther was the winner for the day with a nett score of 28. Next in line was Wayne King with a 29. At this stage, those positions have been reversed for this week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition. Wayne King had a great game and is leading the field with a nett 61. Wayne recorded five par scores for the front 9! Well done Wayne - that is Kim Copland material! Pete Gunther is currently the runner-up position with 62. Two hard scores to beat this week. Coke have advised us that we are very close to losing our Coke machine as not enough product is being purchased through them (instead we are supporting our local providers) and that it is costing Coke a lot of money every time we have a service call (which is quite regular - it’s not working at the moment either!) costs them $$$$. Hashers are meant to be tough THIS week’s run was set by Nostrildumass, who showed how tough Hashers are meant to be by taking us half-way up Mount Cook, and back again. I shall have to do that again sometime, in daylight. I might even get to the top. Anyway, back at the bash, GM Thermo donned her tiara and called us all to order. Once everyone had stopped gossiping (we’re terrible gossips), she read us the Hash Trash from February 7, 1986. Different times, different world: “Monday’s run suffered the trials of the Wet Season, all the clues were washed away. Lucky GB knew where he was going. “Nice flat run around the streets and only one creek crossing. We welcomed about a dozen new people on Monday.

The chaps from the Works Department; Bob, Sandra and Brett Hammond (at long last); father and son Wanklyn; Kate and Duane Roesler etc. Half way drinks were had at Sid and Rhonda’s place, thank goodness they were at home. It was quite a hard slog up the hill after drinks, quite a few stragglers with yellow can in hand. Good luck for the future Sid, Rhonda and family. Discussions on our bi-centennial project are continuing and a couple of projects are under serious discussion. We have installed Les (Grouch) as our Grand Hash Master. His first duty was to instruct Can-Can Kate on the technical details and way to down, downing a can. Put up a good fight, Kate. The next run will be set by Terry Edwards, he’s up the hill behind Cook-

town Hardware. Any other slackers out there who want to join the fun, we start at 5pm. It will cost you $1 and don’t blame us if you get hurt. For more info telephone 695 228 Chek Bak” Interesting. Things have not changed much in the past 30 years. One person mentioned is still running regularly, and Can-Can only left for Cairns recently. They were preparing for the 200th run; last week’s run was 1583rd. If you want to join the tradition, turn up at Grandad’s in town on Monday, August 12 at 5.30pm. Contact Moses on 4069 5854 or 0409 686 032 for details. On-on! Lye Bak

Alice Taylor with a 26kg Spanish mackerel caught on Saturday. Photos submitted.

Kurt Steel with a solid barra caught from Lakefield.

Spanish mackerel dominate the reef edges AS the picture of Alice Taylor with a 26kg specimen show, Spanish mackerel are of a good size around the local reefs, supported by other reports of good catch of mackerel from Dawson, Egret and Boulder Reefs. Inshore reefs have produced coral trout, spangle emperor, red emperor and large mouth nannygai as well, so grab the small weather windows when

they appear. Local Rivers have still been producing some great fish, with one of Gone Fishing’s clients landing a 73cm fingermark, which is a massive fish out of the river. Add that to some golden trevelly, grunter and a few barra and the week has been OK. Mud crabs are a bit hit-and-miss, but still worth chasing.

Queen fish have still been working the Annan River, so always have a surface popper handy. The photo of Kurt Steel shows a solid 80cm barra he caught from Lakefield, but the water temperature was cool and the action was otherwise a bit slow. A report from Bathurst Heads (Princess Charlotte Bay) however,

said that the water temp there was 23 degrees, but rising to 26 on the afternoon flood tide, so that will start to produce more action as our estuary fish do become more active around 26-27 degrees, so lure casters will soon be enjoying some good fishing. This weekend’s

forecast looks promising, so best be ready to wet a line or go for swim. Tight Lines Russell Bowman The Lure Shop

total to 109 before Harry was bowled by a ripper from Dally Rootsey for 34. This brought regular opener Preston Demaal to the crease. He and Selwyn put together a 103-run partnership before Glen Kulka got one through Preston’s defences to bowl him for 35. Selwyn was out next over for a well made 94, caught by a reflex catch from Brett Pickup off George Kulka’s bowling. Hope Vale went on to finish their allotted 40 overs with 216 on the board. Best

bowler for BMP was Glen with 2-31 off 5 overs. After a hearty lunch, again courtesy of Helen, BMP began the chase with Geoffrey Kulka and Glen opening. These two made a great start, taking the score to 65 before Coley Bowen snapped up a catch to remove Glen for 18. Clive was next, reaching 13 before he popped a catch up to Timmy off the bowling of Dillon. But the score had ballooned out to 157 by then, mainly due the lusty, but

patient batting of Geoffrey at the other end. Ashley Lyall joined Geoffrey in the middle, but the latter was out in the next over, just after hitting a six to reach his century for 105, caught by Timmy off the bowling of Deano. Well done Geoffrey! George and “Asho” then batted sensibly to see BMP across the line with plenty of overs to spare. Both batsmen remained 24 not out. Geoffrey was the obvious Man of the Match with his ton.

Successful shooting for ‘Dizzy’ THIS weekend will see a program of shotgun shooting at the SSAA Cape York Branch Cameron Creek Range. A DTL event will be held on Saturday from 1pm, then on Sunday there will be a Sporting Clays contest from 9am. In last week’s shooting, both the Rifle and Pistol disciplines enjoyed favourable conditions for their events, just in time the wind picked up. Range officer Daryl Wain provided the following results for the Pistol Shoot: Rimfire Cowboy Silhouette, with a possible score of 40 - Dizzy 1st with 20, Ken White 2nd on 18 and

Les Green 3rd with 13; Centrefire Plate Match, with a possible score of 12 - Dizzy 1st with 11, while second was a tie between Les and Ken who both returned scores of eight. Fourth was Tracey with four. Members are reminded that our next monthly meeting is on Tuesday, August 13 at 7pm at Fishermans Wharf. Anne Williams Secretary SSAA Cape York at Cameron Creek Road.

Thanks to all that help score, cook, run the bar and generally make a great day of the cricket. This weekend will see Marton take on BMP with the Council taking on Hope Vale the following weekend of August 18.

G’day again. One win down and another five to go before we will see if we’ve been successful in a charge to make the final eight in this year’s NRL competition. We have to go through undefeated and then rely on the results of some of the teams ahead of us. In saying that, has there ever been a competition with so many teams still in the mix for finals glory? I won’t go into some of the possibilities here, but you only have to see where everyone is on the ladder and who is playing who in the next five weeks leading up to the end of the regular season. And for those next five weeks, it will be desperation stakes for everyone with a chance. Mathematically, we’re still in it, but the bottom line is that we “have” to keep winning. Over the next five weeks we will be pitched against the Penrith Panthers, Gold Coast Titans, Newcastle Knights and Wests Tigers - the four teams that still have faint glimpses of making it. The other game is against the Sharks who at this stage appear safe in fifth. Desperation doesn’t really describe what we will have to find to face the chalenge. Sure, if we had played better earlier in the season, we wouldn’t be in this predicament, but that’s history, we can’t control that. What we can control is our performances until the end of the season, and we want to finish off on a high note, regardless of how things pan out. But we’re confident, in fact enormously confident after our great victory against the Rabbitohs last weekend. Until recently, they’ve been the benchmark side for the competition, so we knew we were well and truly up against it. We knew they had a big forward pack and we knew our forwards had to at least match them, which they did. They were able to lay the platform for us backs

Three Rivers’ future depends on finding local referees

and for the tries to keep rolling in. Kane Linnett played very well to pick up two tries, and it was good to see Tariq Sims cross as well, but really, everyone played very well. Tariq’s horror run with leg injuries, his rehabilitation and slow return to his best have been well documented, so it was great to see him play as well as he did. The best part is, that he is still not at his best. I was happy with my form in the game and pulled up with the usual soreness and no injuries. And at this stage, I don’t think anyone else suffered any injuries either, but we’ll have to wait for the final medical reports to see what the make-up of the team will be for the game against the Panthers at their home ground at Centrebet Stadium on Sunday night. Are we up to it? You betcha! We have to be! Before signing off for this week though, I’d like to urge everyone back home to think about taking up the whistle as a qualified referee to keep the Three Rivers League going. I’ve just learned that’s what’s needed to keep the competition going. Without qualified referees and touch judges, they will have to close it all down. And that would be a terrible shame because everyone loves their footy up there. - Matt Bowen

THE future of the embattled Three Rivers Rugby League competition remains in a state of flux at this time, dependent on the availability of referees for Friday night games. It appears that recent disruptions to the competition through teams forfeiting their Saturday games have resulted from the lifestyles of the players. “When the competition first started, it was decided that games be held on Friday nights, once a fortnight,” Three Rivers President Peter Scott said. “And for two years, things have run smoothly, with an enthusiastic participation from all those involved. “But with unavailability of a qualified referee on Friday nights, we tried to change to Saturday afternoon/ evening games. “It seems this doesn’t suit the majority of players, so now we’re left with trying to find a referee to so we can return to the Friday night format.” With no qualified locals available, the competition is faced with having to import referees from Cairns at a cost of $400 per game, and that does not include the provision of accommodation. Scott said he had approached the Queensland Rugby League about subsidising the costs. “I’m waiting for a response to that request,” he said. “But even if they are able to help, we’ll still have to find a private sponsor for their accommodation.” However, the conundrum facing Three Rivers is that it has no source of income or has engaged in fund raising since its inception. “We have a little bit of money in the bank, but at this stage I’m not keen on exhausting that,” he said. So where does the league go now? “Well, we’ve got two new sport and recreation officers here now, so the focus will be to try and find some volunteers to take up the whistle and be trained,” he said. “We have to have qualified referees officiating the games, there is no choice in that. “If we fail in that search, the competition is very likely going to have to shut down.”

Wombat_101 still in control in footy tipping WOMBAT_101 has maintained his totally dominant six-win lead after round 21 of the Cooktown Local News/Hinterland Aviation/ Inn Cairns NRL footy tipping competition on the weekend. No one tipped all eight winners, and for that matter nor seven. Six was the best with Wombat_101, Eye of the Tiger, Beagleb2, TheFantasticMrsFox, Camf, Prickly, Maggie_P, Matthew Thompson and Gracie on that level. Home team Cowboys’ win against the Rab-

bitohs put almost all tipsters out of business, with only Harry The Bear on the ball, and only Cameron Neill and Gracie tipped the Sharks to edge out the Warriors. Wombat_101 (6 wins) now stands on 116, six ahead of Eye of the Tiger (6) on 110. Beagleb2 (6) is one further back on 109, one in front of TheFantasticMrsFox (6) on 108. Nikki (3) slupmed to 105. There is then another three-win gap to the rest of the field. 102: Camf (6). 100: Wazza (5), Prickly (6).

Tide times – Cooktown

99: Pootie Tang (4), Maggie_P (6), 98: Matthew Thompson (6). 96: bubsie1981 (5). 94: Whiteyfunk (5). 91: Cameron Neill (5). The winner of the Cooktown Local News/ Hintertland Aviation and Inn Cairns NRL footy tipping competition will received a return flight to Cairns with Hinterland Aviation and three nights’ accommodation in Inn Cairns right in the heart of Cairns. The runner-up will receive $250 from the Cooktown Local News.
