Drag race fun for Black Mountain Unplugged

By COREY BOUSEN

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then there was plenty of optometry work required at Black Mountain Unplugged on the weekend, when this bevvy of blokes in dresses (plus one woman in a sombrero) took part in

the inaugural Drag Race on Saturday afternoon. You can see more photos from the Black Mountain Unplugged event on page 13 in this edition of the Cooktown Local News.

545 sign petition against flouridation of water

A PETITION, with 545 signatures against the fluoridation of the Cooktown water supply, was presented to the Cook Shire Council on Tuesday. In a letter that accompanied the petition, the ‘Safe Water for Cooktown People’ community group said: “We believe that the Cook Shire Council needs to consider this issue very carefully as this issue is not going to go away as more people become informed of the fluoride issues and aware of the latest peer reviews and research that are now published and available on the internet. “Sixteen Queensland local councils have now rejected fluoridation, either ending existing fluoridation, deciding not to proceed to use the newly built or partially built fluoride dosing plants, or voting not to proceed down the path of fluoridation any further, even though up until the end of November 2012 the Queensland Government legislation had mandated that these councils fluoridate their drinking water. “We are submitting this petition in the hope that Cook Shire Council will give due consideration to this very important issue and will do the same,” the letter states. Cooktown Mayor Peter Scott, in a letter to the

Kim Fowler, Rhonda Holland and Trish Allen presented the anit-fluoridation petition to the Cook Shire Council on Tuesday. neighbouring council and we appreciate it,” Councillor Scott told Cooktown Local News earlier this week. “The Council is always on the look out for cost saving measures and this was a gift, so why not?,” he said. The Mayor said fluoridation only costs the shire about $10 a day, with the freebie fluoride enough to satisfy the local requirements for about 2.5 years.

Cooktown Local News (25 July, 2013), said the antifluoridation lobby has not been presenting a balanced view on the issue. “It is important that balanced and informed consideration be given to the contentious issues such as the current fluoride argument,” he said. Councillor Scott added that mass medication is “a popularly accepted convention” and highlighted that Coen, which has naturally-occurring high levels of fluoride in its water supply, boasts “significantly better” dental health than similar Cape York Peninsula communities. The presentation of the petition, which is expected to be discussed at the next Cook Shire Council meeting, coincides with the news that Tablelands Regional Council gifted Cook Shire Council with about $5000 worth of fluoride. The gift, which has been described as having “solved a waste disposal problem” for the Tablelands (see letter on page 2 of this edition), has been described as a welcome cost-saving by the mayor. “The Cook Shire Council has managed to reduce its fluoridation costs by getting this additive for free from a

A ROSSVILLE resident, 41, was caught with 109 marijuana plants, allege Queensland Police, as part of an operation on the weekend that saw six people arrested and charged with 11 offences in the Cooktown and Hope Vale regions. The local drug-busts were part of a wideranging operation on the weekend, from Port Douglas to Hope Vale, that saw the arrest of 30 people who were charged with 56 drug offences. Dubbed “Operation Cairns-Dragon”, raids included properties in the Cooktown and Hope Vale region, as well as Port Douglas and Mossman. Commenting on the operation, Cooktown Station Senior Sergeant John McArthur said: “Over the four days Monday, 5 August 2013, to Thursday, 8 August 2013, Detectives from Mossman and Cooktown, with the assistance of staff from Cairns Tactical Crime Squad, Port Douglas Station, Mossman Station, Cooktown Station and Hope Vale Station, executed search warrants at target addresses across Port Douglas, Mossman, Cooktown and Hope Vale divisions in search of evidence of drug related crimes.”

 letters to the editor Cooktown ‘drinks the fluoride Tablelands rejected’ INFORMATION recently obtained through Freedom of Information shows that Tablelands Regional Council, after deciding not to fluoridate the residents in their council area, sent their unwanted fluoride to Cooktown. Cook Shire Council obtained this unwanted fluoride for free. It certainly solved a big waste disposal problem for Tablelands Regional Council but it created a

problem for those in Cooktown who want to see fluoridation ended. Cook Shire earlier this year bought in Tableland’s fluoride, estimated to have cost Tableland’s $5000, so that it appears that senior Cook Council staff must intend to continue fluoridating Cooktown’s water long time, even though mandatory fluoridation in Queensland was overturned late last year.

It is pity that Council, before agreeing to take on another council’s waste, did not seek the opinions of their residents, particularly when, in the last seven months, 16 Queensland councils have rejected fluoridation. Our association’s policy has always been that not a single person should have fluoridation forced on them. When fluoride chemicals are

added to the drinking water, it is hard to avoid fluoride. Fluoride Mass medication has always been a particularly contentious issue so it must be particularly galling to some in Cooktown to learn that they are drinking fluoride that John West, I mean Tablelands, rejected. New research last m onth by CCQ and Griffith Uni highlighted the importance of supporting men who might feel distressed by prostate cancer. In Far North Queensland, around 170 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year - 1 in 7 of us in our lifetime. Our study confirmed many men distressed by prostate cancer do not access the psychological support they need to cope better and preserve quality of life.

flouridation debate

IN response to the above letter, which was circulated by email on Monday, the author of this letter has asked for her response to be published in the Cooktown Local News. I do not wish to be privy to any further information regarding fluoridation. I think as a community both sides of this argument have been well represented. I do not actually want to keep reading articles such as this in the local newspaper. If the anti-fluoridation lobby has represented its case truthfully and to the best of its knowledge, then it shouldn’t have to go digging up petty information such as this. Not only that, but the anti-fluoridation lobby is jeopardising individuals’ integrity by putting pressure on them to disclose information of this sort, through right-to-information requests, regardless if they support non-fluoridation or not. It’s all hearsay and not worth the paper it’s written on! Michelle Hodgkiss

shows that Queensland has been the most-littered mainland state for the last three years. A shocking discovery considering that we pride ourselves on having one of the most naturally diverse and stunning locations in the world. So what can you do to help? Cook Shire Council encourages residents to report all witnessed littering and illegal dumping. If you witness an incident, take a note of as much information you can: dates, times, volume of waste illegally dumped, vehicle registration numbers, description of the person(s) committing the offence, etc. You can also report littering and illegal dumping to the DEHP online www. ehp.qld.gov.au or printed forms are available on request from Council. With successful grant funding from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP), four surveillance cameras have been installed in various locations to ensure offenders are caught and made accountable for their actions. Littering and illegal dumping are crimes punishable under the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 and enforced by Council’s Local Law’s. Fines for individuals start at $220 and businesses could receive fines up to $7040, depending on the volume and type of waste. DESPITE efforts to make disposing of waste as easy and convenient as possible, Cook Shire Council is finding that littering and illegal dumping are on the increase. According to the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011, illegal dumping is defined as unlawfully deposited waste in volume greater than 200 litres (about the amount contained in an average wheelie bin) with all smaller amounts considered littering. Council is aware of several illegal dumping spots; some in close proximity to waste disposal bins. These areas require repeated cleaning up, adding unnecessary workload to Council staff at the expense of ratepayers. Resources allocated to these tasks could be reduced significantly if rubbish is disposed of in an appropriate and responsible manner. Cook Shire Council said it has a strong commitment to waste management, with programs in place to ensure our communities are clean, healthy and litter-free for the benefit of locals and visitors alike. In Cooktown alone, there are 27 rubbish bins available, in addition to three recycling skip bins, one Waste Transfer Station and a buy-back shop for unwanted second-hand goods. The communities of Lakeland and Ayton each have rubbish bins in several locations around town, as well as a dedicated recycling trailer and Waste

Future of the School P&C in the balance THE future of the Cooktown State School P&C is hanging in the balance, with the two of the three executive positions remaining vacant after the recent AGM. Nikki Darvell, who was re-elected as President at the 30 July meeting, says the positions of treasurer and secretary need to be filled or the P&C, by law, will have to fold. “Having members isn’t a problem. We’ve got members but it’s having people to fill the executive positions that is critical,” Ms Darvell said. While there is a stop-gap arrangement to fill the secretary position, it is very urgent to fill the treasurer’s position, which doesn’t involve very much work, she said. “We’ve really got to find a treasurer, and that person must be someone who has a child attending the school, as they must have a child attending the school to be on the executive committee.” (Regular members of the P&C do not have to have a child attending the school). Ms Darvell said any unspent P&C funds, should the committee fold, will be given to the state government to be held in trust in the event that a P&C should be reformed sometime in the future. The P&C plays a vital role as the designated intermediary between parents and the school, as well as organising fundraising activities. But with Ms Darvell carrying most of the load in the past two years, the P&C has only been holding a couple of fundraisers a year, which include Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day sausage sizzles. “It’s a real pity but it’s always been the same. “We’ve always struggled to get executive members. I’m doing this job for my kids to ensure the get the best educational experience possible,” Ms Darvell said, adding that the P&C has been very effective in achieving positive outcomes for both students and the school. And for those who are hesitant to put their hand-up to join the committee, Ms Darvell highighted that the duties of both vacant positions are not too onerous. “You don’t have to be at every single meeting,” she said. The next P&C meeting is on Friday, 30 August, starting at 9.45am at the Events Centre and everyone is welcome. Anyone willing to help, but who can’t make the 30 August meeting, can also contact Ms Darvell by email at nikki@capecrusaders.net.au or by calling 4069 5564 and leaving a message.

Six charged with 11 offences in drug bust << From Page 1 The operation resulted in 30 offenders prosecuted for a total of 56 charges, including: supply of cannabis, production of cannabis, possession of amphetamines, possession of kapanol, possession of cannabis, possession of property (drug related), possession of drug utensils, failure to dispose of syringes and permitting a place to be used for drug offences, he said. Of those charged, a total of six people were charged with 11 offences in the Cooktown and Hope Vale region. “Street value of drugs and property seized during the operation is estimated at approx. $100,000,” said Senior Sergeant McArthur. Among those arrested was a 14-year-old boy in Port Douglas, who faces a charge of supplying dangerous drugs. Senior Constable Russell Parker, from Cairns Police, said those arrested were not linked. “This was not an organised drug ring, although some of the alleged offenders would be known to each other,” he told the Cairns Post. “A lot of them would just be lone offenders.” A 50-year-old Cape Tribulation resident faces five charges, which is the most of any alleged offenders caught during the operation. Those arrested will face caught in their respective jurisdictions in coming weeks.

COMMUNITY

Freedom Flotilla to visit Cooktown A GROUP of activists, aiming to highlight the abuses of human rights by the Indonesian government in West Papua, are due to arrive by sea in Cooktown on Monday morning, 19 August. Locals are invited to come down to near the Cooktown Post Office at 9am to meet the people of the “Freedom Flotilla”, with three vessels expected to arrive from Cairns with about 20 people on board. Described as a “unprecedented event of creative resistance to the Indonesian occupation of West

Papua”, the flotilla began it’s journey from Lake Eyre in June and is scheduled to depart from Cairns on 17 August. After picking up some supplies in Cooktown, the Flotilla will sail northwards to the Torres Strait and then will attempt to sail to West Papua, although the flotilla members have been refused visas by the Indonesian government. Local Cooktown boaties are invited to welcome the flotilla into Cooktown or to join the flotilla for any part of the trip north, organisers said.

The Indonesian military invaded West Papua in 1962 and made it a province of the country and has repressed political dissenters ever since, costing the lives of many. “We’ve spoke to many locals throughout the entire journey and they are giving their full support to bring peace and stability to West Papua. “We are acting as peace keepers to shine the light on the ongoing atrocities that are happening every day just across the Strait from Cape York”, said West Papuan activist Ronny Kareni.

THIS SATURDAY...

BLACK IMAGE & WARRIGAN CLAN a delectable hour of enlightenment and humour. North American cellist Zuill Bailey’s playing was heart-stopping. Nicholas Daniel (U.K.), arguably the world’s best oboe player, gave spinetingling performances that were too good to be true. Violinist Gil Morgenstern (U.S.) played with great sensitivity and young Latvian-born Ksenija Siderova thrilled the audience by playing fast and quirky music with fantastic rhythms on the piano accordion. Ksenija’s whole body danced to the music, living every bit of it with facial expressions and lively eyes as she sat operating her 20-kilo accordion with amazing skill. Her instrument, being modern, was not limited to ump-bah-bah. She produced magical sounds that we had never imagined possible from a piano accordion. She told us that at the end of her Year 9 school year she had been awarded a scholarship to the London Royal College of Music, one of five places for students of that instrument. And, she would love to come to Cooktown!

Piers Lane’s life is one constant whirlwind of world travel to perform with top orchestras to audiences of thousands. His playing is sensitive and virtually flawless. Piers always remains cool and relaxed with a genuine smile and time to listen, even at the Townsville Festival, despite 10 days and nights of demanding work with limited rehearsal time and 40 performers to be kept in the loop at all times. How fortunate we are to have this wonderful man devote time to Far North Queensland. In 2008 his insightful advice was of great assistance in deciding on the purchase of our superb Yamaha piano at NPH. Plan now to represent Cooktown in Cairns for the 2014 concerts; Sunday evening 10 August at the Civic Theatre where a bar is open at interval, and at Whitfield House on Monday morning where a delicious morning tea is provided. Everything about it is lovely. Your presence would be appreciated and you would not be disappointed.

ON Sunday, August 4, a group of Cooktowners went to Cairns for the last two concerts of the 23rd year of the Townsville Australian Festival of Chamber Music. Chamber music is composed for performance in the intimacy of a music room or small hall by a group of accomplished instrumental musicians. This is the second year that the last two festival concerts have been held in Cairns, with support from the James Cook University. Some of the best instrumentalists in the world come to Townsville for the festival. The pianist and artistic director is Piers Lane whose mother was born in Townsville and whose grandparents lived in Innisfail. Since 1979 Piers has been based in London where, until international engagements intervened, he was a professor of piano at The Royal Academy of Music. Piers, who is well known to BBC Radio 3 listeners, interviewed each of the 4 performers which, as always, was

they are all you will need come election day. The likely winner will be Tony Ears, from the Loudmouthed Loony faction of the LNP. He has the backing of some really important people i.e. Rupert Murdoch and News Corp, and many electors dislike him less than they dislike his Labor opponents. However, so far his minders have not let him say anything significant about policies.

Unfortunately for them, he will have to touch on specifics soon and the results could be, well, interesting. Opposing Tony, we have Kevin the Weasel. Kevin is remarkable because many people genuinely like him. On the other hand, the people who actually know him - his colleagues and people who have suffered him as a boss - absolutely loathe him. At one stage they called

WHILE walking down the street one day, a “Member of Parliament” is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St Peter at the entrance. “Welcome to heaven,” says St Peter. “Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.” “No problem, just let me in,” says the man. “Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from higher up,” St Peter says. “What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven, then you can choose where to spend eternity.” “Really,” says the MP, “I’ve made up my mind, I want to be in heaven.” “I’m sorry, but we have our rules,” re-enforces St Peter. And with that, St Peter escorts him

him Dr Death, behind his back, of course. The Labor Party is not a fundamentally happy place at the moment, and the prospect of a big defeat has made things worse. Enter the White Knight, parachuted into a winnable Labor seat. Yes, it’s Peter Beattie to the rescue, and there he was sharing a platform with The Weasel as if they were old chums - which they definitely are not. Still, Peter looks good,

and I have a lot of time for him after I learned that, as a young man, he had been bopped on the head with a police truncheon and thrown into the Watch house during an anti-apartheid demonstration. He may well win extra votes for Labor - a man to watch. And then we have the Tweedle-Dum and TweedleDee of the elections - Clive Palmer and Bob Katter. Both of them can talk sense, and they don’t have

One for the political cynics to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly and nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realises it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell

and waves while the elevator rises. The elevator goes up, up, up and the door re-opens on heaven where St Peter is waiting for him. “Now it’s time to visit heaven,” St Peter said. So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realises it, the 24 hours have gone by and St Peter returns. ‘Well then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in heaven, now choose your eternity,” he said to the MP. The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: “Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.”

embarrassing histories in govView ernment. from They the Hill could well garner some significant protest votes, but don’t expect either of them to be Prime Minister just yet. If they did well enough to form a parliamentary block, wouldn’t that be interesting? They would keep the big boys honest, and that would be great for Australia.

So St Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he’s in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. “I don’t understand,” stammers the MP.”Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. “Now there’s just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. “What happened?” The devil looks at him, smiles and says, “Yesterday we were campaigning, today you voted.”

Start the cameras rolling for Cooktown Film Festival LIGHTS, camera, action! Get yourselves organised and start filming for the Cooktown Film Festival on Sunday ,October 27. A three-day workshop, funded by a Queensland Regional Arts Development Fund, will see Director Jed Cahill and his crew from In The Bin Pty Ltd travel to Cooktown to hold these community workshops. Co-ordinator of the C/ Town Asylum Productions, Sarah Henderson said the festival is going to be a stellar event on this year’s calendar: “We are very fortunate to have Jed and his crew visit Cooktown again, and the three-day workshops involve assistance with scriptwriting and story-boarding, best filming practices and video editing techniques. “Being taught by a team of professionals for three days will give participants the opportunity to further develop their videography skills. And it’s free!”. Starting on Friday, October 25, the participants will need to be available for all three of the full day workshops and need to separate into four groups and decide on a script to produce. To add to the Film Festival’s festivities, Jed will also be holding Superfly workshops with school students on Thursday, October 24 “These workshops will be loads of fun and the videos that are created from here will be played on the night

of the Film Festival, I hope I get to have a turn after the students!” Sarah said. And if that isn’t enough silver screen action for you, there will also be a Silent Movie Night on Friday, October 26 where the sound effects will be spontaneously created by some local musicians and artists in town. “This is a good opportunity to have a fundraiser for our group, as we are trying to purchase a laptop and video editing software,” she said. “If you’re interested in helping out, we’d love to hear from you.” The venue and time for this is yet to be confirmed. Similar to last year’s “Cooktown in a Minute” Film Festival, C/Town Asylum Productions will be having a competition as well to see who can create the best video. There are five different categories this year and the videos will be judged by the most creative and entertaining way of using the theme, “Community”. Prizes will be awarded to the Best Adult entry (+18), Best Child’s entry (-18), Best Community Group, Best School entry and the popular, People’s Choice Awards. Entries need to be submitted by October 11 to be entered into the Festival. Sarah said she hopes she can double the amount of entries received last year: “20 entries would be a fantastic result, so if you’re into this

sort of thing, you better get filming!”. People who are interested in these free workshops are urged to contact Sarah if they want to be involved. “Time is of the essence and if you have an idea you want to turn into a script and film for this festival, please contact me asap!” she said. The next meeting will be held at 10am on Saturday, August 24. at the Cooktown Bowls Club. Contact Sarah Henderson (0417 622 655) for further information or if you would like to donate a prize to the Festival.

The Cairns Regional Council states on its website: “Because of the hazardous conditions, we may temporarily close the track from time to time. We also place high-visibility signage on the approaches to the CREB track when closures are in force. “During closures, you should not make any attempt to drive along the track. If you disobey a road sign and drive on the closed road, you risk an on-the-spot fine. “If your vehicle becomes stuck on the CREB track, search and rescue authorities will respond and assist to extract stranded people if necessary. However, resources will not generally be expended in attempting to recover your stranded vehicle/s. “If you disobey a road closure, you may also be ordered to pay for the costs of recovery activities,” the council warns. “Road safety is a key consideration in these temporary track closures, but we also aim to minimise environmental damage. We sat together over a coffee and talked about the things that made him who he is, and how he sees his home town. Is Martin a local lad? “Yes, probably, for me anyway. I’ve been here 10 years and that’s the longest I have spent anywhere.

“Since I left home I have never spent longer than 12 months anywhere. I was born and bred in Ballarat. “Dad was a school teacher and jazz musician; mum is a farm girl. A standard family, me and my sister, a two-bedroom home in a suburb of Bal-

larat.” Is Martin saying he used to be normal? “Yeah - I don’t know what happened. I didn’t like school. Just the concept of being told you had to learn something. As a young fellow I just wanted to get out on my own. “I finished school with mediocre grades, accepted an arts course place but took the year off. “That’s when I first came to north Queensland, on a fruit-picking journey. Tomatoes, picked tobacco around Mareeba, came to Cooktown in about 1990. “ A f t e r a y e a r, a n 18-year-old man having a lot of fun, earning a bit of coin, there was no way I was going back to university. I just kept on moving. “It was a good life. I just followed the seasons; I picked grapes, went over to Western Australia, went up to Darwin and picked mangoes. “I was intrigued by going to new places and meeting new people. I bought a ticket to Bali and island-hopped through Indonesia. It was good fun.” Martin’s story so far was one of travel. Did he come back to Australia? “Yes, but I went overseas again. I spent a few years overseas. I did the standard tour. England never really tickled my fancy. I went right up to the far north of Scotland as a chef in a sea-food restaurant. “ I c o u l d n ’t s t a n d the winter up there; the days are so short. went back to manage the same restaurant. “That’s where I met my wife. She was still a young thing. “She latched onto me, and she’s still latched. When we came back we still lived that traveller life. We landed in Perth and drove across the Nullabor to Ballarat to see the folks. “We came here, we went across to Darwin. Then we lived in Cairns.” So what brought Martin to settling down? “We were living at Buchan Point and working in the resorts there. We had had enough of that. We threw our jobs in and said let’s go for a walk. “We walked up here, mostly up over the mountains. The Black Mountain Road. Then the CREB track to Bloomfield and then Mount Poverty to stay with a friend. “It took three and a half months ambling along. We were in no hurry.” So Martin settled in Helenvale and started having children. Is that the end of his travels? “To be honest, even though we have got four children, and I’ve got a business, we still feel we could drive off into the sunset tomorrow. With the kids, obviously! “We talk about it - if

we had the urge we could just pack up and leave. There’s nothing tying us down. I like that feeling. I do like that feeling.” While we still have Martin here, I asked him about his business. “Cooktown Lawn and Garden Care. It’s a business I started a few years ago. I don’t see it as being tough. “I get plenty of work. I work for myself; I don’t have any employees. I’m not a capitalist! I enjoy going to work and doing the jobs I have to do for people. “I don’t think it’s a tough job. It’s physically demanding but I’ve done lots of physical work in tropical places. “You get conditioned to it, you actually enjoy it. Except in December when it gets up to 40 in the shade. That’s the busiest time of the year. “I have plenty of work all the year around, and I don’t mind this time of year when things quieten off. I’m not a workaholic.” One thing Martin has not mentioned so far is his career as a poet. “I’ve always been a bit of a writer. Short stories, putting pen to paper and dabbling in a bit of poetry. I actually learnt after many years how to write Australian bush poetry properly. “It is harder than you

might think. I have a CD out, which I did a couple of years ago. I got invited to go down and perform at the Gympie muster. “ A lot of the poetry leans towards the humorous stuff. They like audiences to have a bit of a laugh. You can read poems that have a totally different effect. “There’s a few poets who can do both. You can have tears in your eyes from sadness than, in the blink of an eye, you have tears from laughter. “It’s a thing I enjoy doing. And if we every move on, it’s something I can spruik at a street corner. “I can put my hat out and might get enough to buy my children some two-minute noodles!” I asked Martin if there is anything he would like to give Cooktown. “I was in the Top Pub a little while ago and talking to one of the boys there. We were looking at the block across the road. “We need to start up an 1870s theme park. Like Palmer River gold rush days with opium dens and brothels and raging grog shanties. “It did happen, didn’t it? If it’s done right. Sovereign Hill in Ballarat is a re-created gold town. “Something like that. It takes you back in time, and people really love that sort of stuff.”

Rossville State School is a small school of 31 families and 42 students. They had to work hard in selling over 1000 tickets. Each fortnight there was a lucky draw for the students who brought back 20 sold tickets. Eliza Sail, Solomon Gibson, Bethany Slocombe were rewarded for their selling efforts by each receiving a voucher from the Lion’s Den Hotel, a toy from Ambience Boutique and a voucher from Cooktown Video. Cinaed Finall received a dinner voucher from the Lion’s Den for selling the most raffle tickets. Thanks to the hard work of those who sold tickets, a massive $3254 was raised. With these funds the P&C will purchase iPads or similar that will assist learning groups and activities in the 2 multi-aged classes. Following the official opening of the 2013 Cooktown and District Show, the Mega Raffle was drawn by Warren Entsch MP and announced by Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott on Friday, August 2. Bird problem aired By VIRGINIA SIMMONDS A FORUM has been held in Tolga to discuss ways for Birdlife Northern Queensland to support farmers protecting their crops from birds foraging on their croplands without having having to resort to killing them. A vigorous discussion brought out the complexity of the problems arising from the different bird species involved, including different behaviours such as day or night feeding. Some farmers have been employing scare-guns and loud noises, but had run into protests from non-farming neighbours. Others advocated reducing the bird population to “natural numbers”. However, there is no evidence that crops increase the numbers of birds - birds have to get a feed every day of the year. The population is controlled by the worst season - not the ad lib feed during the cropping season. This phenomenon is not a ‘bird populatoin size’ problem but a ‘bird concentration’ problem. Unexpectedly, a case was made in favour of the birds on the croplands. Nature-based tourism is an increasingly important part of the local economy. Cranes flying into Bromfield Swamp is now an internationally known icon. The sight of large flocks of cranes and cockatoos on cropped fields is a tourist delight. The thousands of ducks on Hasties Swamp is also a tourist attraction. Follow-up action saw a meeting with Shane Knuth, in which his support was sought for the import of a non-toxic seed treatment from the USA, which repels the birds when they attempt to eat the seed after sowing. In a meeting with Mayor Rosa lee-Long, the problem of bird-scaring noise and the need for information and explanation to go to the residents who are affected was discussed.

Why Fluoridation

should stop WATER FLUORIDATION IS MASS MEDICATION DENYING CHOICE & INFORMED CONSENT Fluoridating water is FORCED medication done with NO prior assessment of individual’s health problems, NO control over dose except for thirst and NO follow up - ever. Water fluoridation is harmful - 25 % of NSW children in fluoridated areas now exhibit Dental Fluorosis ( NSW 2007 CDHS ) Dental Fluorosis is a sign of early fluoride toxicity. Bottle fed babies receive over 100 times more fluoride than breast fed babies if fluoridated water is used to make up Infant Formula. There are now 36 human studies linking Fluoride exposure at only moderately raised levels to lowering of IQ– this finding confirmed in a 2012 Harvard University Review. People with Kidney impairment have a lower margin of safety for fluoride—they may retain three times as much fluoride in their bodies ( NHMRC 2011 Aus Drinking Water Guidelines ) Fluoride accumulates in the brain’s Pineal gland and also in the bones - long exposure may increase bone brittleness. Fluoride is an Endocrine Disruptor, ingestion may lower Thyroid activity. For other adverse health effects visit www.fluoridealert.org NO Health Risk Assessments or Environmental Impact Statements were done by the Qld government before forcing fluoridation on Queenslanders. 95% of the world’s population do NOT fluoridate their drinking water - yet according to WHO data have equivalent dental health to the few heavily fluoridated countries. It is now widely acknowledged the main action of fluoride is topical - as when it touches teeth as in toothpaste - there is no need to swallow fluoride. Most Western European countries do not fluoridate water because of health concerns and acknowledgement that water fluoridation is unethical mass medication.

EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT OF CHOICE

No-one should dictate any individual’s medication through their drinking water ————————————————————————————————————————————————--

Lakeland community for their support and for letting us know if we missed a bit, and the volunteers who braved the green ants, pandanus and bogs. However, the bulk of the work remained with SCYC personnel Martin Pattie, Samantha Hobbs, Susan Marsh, the Laura Indigenous Rangers and me. In the Honey Dam, booms were installed and removed, Glyphosate applied and the final plants removed by hand. In May, 2009, the last plants were eliminated from the dam. Next, we turned our attention to the 9km of downstream infestations. Inaccessible to machinery, with treacherous swamps and heavy vegetation inhabited by a remarkable variety of venomous creatures, it tested our resolve, but we are happy to report, all those who walked into the bogs made their way out again. To have removed all the Salvinia in three years with no regrowth truly required a team effort. SOUTH Cape York Catchments recently had the honour of receiving the Batianoff award during the 13th Queensland Weed Symposium. This award, for team excellence in weed control, was presented in recognition of the Salvinia control undertaken in Honey Dam, Bullhead Creek and the Laura River at Lakeland. The project commenced in February, 2008, with follow-up surveys ongoing. If we can go three years without finding any Salvinia in the system, we hope to declare the Lakeland Salvinia infestation has been eradicated. This is looking like February 2014, at this stage. Many thanks to all those involved - in particular the Lakeland State School, with one teacher and 17 students who bred the weevils needed for the eradication program in water troughs borrowed from local landholders. Initially dubiously received in a grain growing area, you kept the faith and the weevils went forth and multiplied. Thanks also to the Cape York Weeds and Feral Animals Program for the use of their boat, John Clarkson from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the

Wujal Wujal plans ahead WUJAL Wujal has become the first Indigenous community in Queensland to adopt a Local Government Planning Scheme. Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes said the planning scheme, which came into effect recently, would let the Shire Council manage developments in a way that met community expectations. Mr Elmes said that adoption of the planning scheme was an important step in bringing about ongoing improvements for the Wujal Wujal community and supporting economic development. “The Planning Scheme focuses on identifying areas for future development that are not impacted by natural hazards, or areas of cultural and ecological significance,” Mr Elmes said. “It gives Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council the tools to guide its decisions about residential, commercial and industrial growth into the future. “By working together with the community, the Shire Council and other

stakeholders, we are helping improve the lifestyle of community members while protecting natural surroundings. “A better future for Indigenous communities is dependent on the communities taking on more planning responsibility and having greater autonomy over how the community can develop. “This is an example of how the Queensland Government, in partnership with the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council, is helping improve lifestyle and economic outcomes for the local community.” The Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs, through its Remote Indigenous Land and Infrastructure Program Office, funded the preparation of the Planning Scheme and management of the process and contract. It worked closely with the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council in the development of the planning scheme, with input from Councillors and the community throughout the process.

Cooktown locals found their thrills at the base of Grassy Hill on Friday night at the “Happy Days” themed party at the Sovereign Hotel’s Café Bar. When asked about his opinion about the night, the Fonz said: “Eeyyyy”. Local dancers lit up the dance floor, twirling-and-awhirling to the tunes of the visiting band “Big Wheel”.

BLACK MOUNTAIN UNPLUGGED 2013 By COREY BOUSEN THE 2013 Black Mountain Unplugged gathering was a laid back success on the weekend, attracting some exceptional talent that was appreciated by a happy and enthusiastic crowd. Running from Friday to Sunday evening in the shadow of the iconic Black Mountain, the event built on last year’s inaugural success to provide a great experience for the punters.

But music wasn’t the only entertainment on offer, with the now classic ‘Black Mountain Underpants Race’ on the Sunday morning bolstered by Saturday’s inaugural ‘Drag Race’ and fashion parade. In a clear show of support for alternative lifestyles in the region, there was a large field of men keen to jump into a dress and strut their stuff. Only one woman was prepared to get her bloke on, but let’s hope that a few more ladies will get into the spirit next year.

It was a relaxed and happy crowed at Black Mountain Unplugged on the weekend.

Danny Ross, recently garnering national attention as a finalist on television show The Voice, played a very chilled solo set.

Estelle, Arnaut, Sandra, 2 year-old Malena, and Margie enjoyed the natural surroundings. RIGHT: Swaggie Campbell, one of Australia’s few remaining swagmen, made his way to Black Mountain for the festival on the weekend. At only 15 years of age, Yasmini Morris, who grew up at Helenvale, wowed the crowd. Yasmini was joined on stage by her mother Gypsy. TOP: Aphelandra sinclairiana - an orange shrimp plant. ABOVE: Petrea volubilis or sandpiper vine. LEFT: Canna in bloom. BELOW LEFT: Turnera subulata or yellow alder. BELOW RIGHT: A vanda orchid.

THIS month I’ve had the pleasure of visiting an array of wonderful local gardens as part of the judging panel for the garden competition held in conjunction with the Cooktown & District Agricultural Show. We visited gardens from the Endeavour Valley, south to Bloomfield and then to Lakeland Downs and Laura and it was great to see so many fantastic ideas showcasing lots of creativity, flair and passion. From having a few pots of herbs on the back verandah, to acres of sprawling gardens and fruit trees, it was a joy to see such a diverse range of concepts and designs. There is sometimes a line of thinking that not much happens in the garden in winter. That may be true in cooler climates, but gardening in the tropics over winter sees so many fantastic plants coming into flower. Besides the ever present ixoras and hibiscus offering splashes of colour, there are literally oodles of winter plants flowering at the minute, including some early spring flowers due to the milder temperatures. It might not agree with those hypersensitive to pollens, but all the mangoes are in flower, and there’s the unmistakable pungent aroma of the melaleucas along with the golden sprays of wattle flowers. Other trees in flower at the minute are the bats wing coral tree (there is one near the barbecue area in the Lions Park) and the impressive golden bouquet (Furneaux Street side of the museum). Lots of tropical vines burst into flower, starting in winter continuing through to spring. Like some trees, they can have two flowering cycles, sometimes an early winter and then late spring. One vine in flower is the tropical wisteria substitute, the sandpaper vine or purple wreath (Petrea volubilis). The eye-catching pyrostegia (orange trumpet) vines are also in bloom, and keep an eye out for early flowers on the jade vine (Lion’s Den Hotel) and flame of the forest. Cannas, gingers, heliconias, bougainvillea, adenium (desert rose) and kalanchoe are all having a flower, along with ground covers such as evolvulus and alder. There is also an abundance of orchids and bromeliads that flower over winter, along with justicias, fire spikes (odontonema), sanchesia and aphelandra. A good tip to encourage your flowering plants is the regular use of liquid potash. It is high in potassium and phosphorus, which promotes enhanced flower and foliage colour and improved fruit size and quality. It also encourages hardy growth and disease resistance. Like all liquid fertilisers, it should be used regularly in low doses (weekly weakly). A lot of liquid fertilisers now come with easy to use applicators you simply connect to your hose. It is important to apply liquid fertiliser early in the morning “after” watering. This way there is a good sap flow within the plants resulting in a greater uptake through the foliage. Visit the local Top End Nursery and inquire about any plants. Jenny will do her best to get them in for you if she hasn’t any in stock. A big thank-you to Gwen Pini for allowing me to take these featured pictures in her fantastic garden, and also for providing me with correct botanical names.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

A long conversation with a manager will help to clear the air. Once issues have been resolved, don’t bring them up again in the future. Romance. You’ll be determined to take a few risks, no matter what the consequences. Listen to your partner, even if you won’t follow what they say.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) This will be a good time for meeting new people. Don’t let your enthusiasm get the better of you, however. Just be yourself! Romance. A financial strain on your relationship will force you and your partner to be creative with your spending habits. Be happy with your new choices.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

FOR KIDS

A difficult decision will not be any easier if you worry constantly. Put your mind at rest and the matter will soon sort itself out. Romance. You will be very dynamic this week. You may find it a little difficult to get the co-operation you need from your partner, however, and may need to act independently.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) You will be getting tired of the additional projects that are coming your way at work. Voice your concerns at the next meeting and things may change in your favour. Romance. Your partner will take your side in an upcoming argument with their family. Be sure to thank them for their support.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) The Moon/Pallas Midpoint moving through your sign will make you especially sensitive to your colleagues’ needs. Try to make the workplace friendlier. Romance. A fleeting encounter with a person born overseas will prove interesting. However, try not to get too involved with them.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)

FINDWORD No. 161 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

You will be surprised how easy it is to make plans with your friends. It may seem as though their schedules revolve around your own. Romance. You may get a little anxious if things don’t quite work out according to plan. You need to be flexible if you want to improve your relationship.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) This will not really be a very good time for new friendships. It seems your time is stretched thin between current friends and you need to divide your time wisely. Romance. A very dreamy week will be a good starting point for a romantic evening later in the week. Indulge yourself!

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

Try to get your family’s support for any changes that you make this week. They have your best interest at heart and won’t allow for mistakes. Romance. Your love-life will soon be in very good shape indeed. Use this time to look for a potential lover if you are currently single.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A peculiar twist of fate will give you a reward which you don’t really deserve. This may begin to play on your conscience. It’s not too late to be honest. Romance. You thought you knew your partner very well, but you may be surprised with recent news about them. Try to remain positive.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) The Moon/Venus Midpoint moving through your sign will signal an important improvement in your social life. Work diligently during the week so you have the weekend free. Romance. Make sure that you use your excess energy wisely. Otherwise, you will quickly become frustrated.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

– Steve Jobs

SOLUTIONS No. 161

Other people may try to slow you down this week. Don’t let them. You finally have the means to complete the tasks that have been waning on you for a long time. Romance. An awkward situation at work may take its toll on your relationship. The relation may not be immediately seen.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

Someone whom you see as a figure of authority may be interested in bringing you on their team. Don’t be overwhelmed with their offer. Instead, be grateful. Romance. Be particularly careful of accidents. Don’t drive if you are tired and certainly not if you’ve been drinking!

Fundraiser at Top Pub to aid Brenton Bowen FAVOURITE local bands Black Image and Warrigan Clan will be at the Top Pub this Saturday night, as part of a fundraiser for Brenton Bowen. The Top Pub is donating $1000 towards the fundraiser, which will go to former Gold Coast Titans winger Brenton Bowen, who is fighting a battle

against a second brain tumour. Bowen, who was contracted with the Titans from 2008 to 2009, had a brain tumour removed in July, 2011. Brenton attempted a brave footy comeback last season with Cairns District Rugby League club Edmonton Storm before the

tumour grew back. Bowen, 28, is currently receiving radiation treatment in Melbourne, following surgery on the benign tumour last December. There will also be raffles and prizes on the night. Brenton Bowen is cousin of the North Queensland Cowboy’s Matt Bowen.

WELL done to all the 8-Week Challenge participants. Here’s a quick overview of the Challenge: The healthy eating challenge provided by Richard Ball our previous community nutritionist in conjunction with the http://www.healthyweightweek. com.au, included a series of challenges that have been distributed weekly over the last eight to 10 weeks. The aim was for participants to change one aspect of their diet a week until week 8, when they would be following all of the eight challenges. How many of you actually carried out all eight challenges? Challenges were accompanied with information outlining the benefits of meeting the challenges and strategies to

assist participants. So, here’s a reminder of what they were: Week 1 - Water/Fluid intake; Week 2 - Breakfast; Week 3 - Reduce fat; Week 4 - Fruit and vegetables; Week 5 - Snacks; Week 6 - Portion control; Week 7 - Take Away/Eating Out; and Week 8 - Salt/Sodium. Anyone wanting a copy of these challenges need only contact me via email on hodgkissmichelle@hotmail. com. I would be happy to share them with you. In conjunction with these eight challenges is of course - “Physical Activity”. It is estimated that 25% of cancers

22 – Cooktown Local News 15 - 21 August 2013

can be attributed to four major lifestyle risk factors: physical inactivity, poor nutrition, alcohol and being overweight or obese. In Australia, it is estimated more than 7600 cancer deaths every year can be attributed to those four major risk factors. Physical activity guidelines • The national physical activity guidelines for Australian adults are: • Think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience; • Be active every day in as many ways as you can; • Put together at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all days; and • If you can, also enjoy some regular, vigorous exercise for extra health and

fitness. Thirty minutes of activity can be accumulated in a minimum of 10 minute bouts of physical activity. Cancer Council Queensland recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate activity per day for good health. However, 60 minutes of moderate physical activity per day, including some vigorous physical activity is more likely to reduce cancer risk. Being active, like healthy eating, requires some thought each day. It also needs to be kept up over a lifetime. Every little extra effort adds up to make a real difference to your health. When starting an exercise program, ensure gradual and realistic lifestyle goals are set. One way to ensure this occurs is to

set yourself “smart” goals. Specific - What will you do? • Measureable - How much. How many? • Achievable - Are you able to do it? • Realistic - Will you be able to do it? For example cost and time commitments. • Timely - is there a timeline? By when? • An example of a “smart” goal is: I will increase my physical activity by walking 30 minutes in the morning at least four times each week, starting this Saturday. The difference between “moderate” and “vigorous” exercise will be explained in more depth next week with some examples. Have a good week everybody.

Grey Nomads’ fundraiser at the Racecourse THE remaining handful of grey nomads camped in the infield of the Cooktown racecourse as of last Friday night were treated to a night of entertainment, drinks and a BBQ as part of fundraising efforts for local groups. Local bush poet Martin Pattie got the entertainment underway, and had the crowd of about 25 in stitches.

Captain James Cook also made an appearance, before the nomads enjoyed a BBQ. The grey nomads at Friday night’s event were what remained of a large number of aged road-warriors who had travelled to Cooktown the previous week for the re-vamped Cooktown show. The numerous nomads spoken to by the Cooktown Local News were very

enthusiastic about the RVfriendly Cooktown and promised to pass their positive views about Cooktown down the vast and powerful grey nomad grapevine. Funds raised from the low-key event are to be split between the Cooktown Re-enactment Association, the Discovery Festival and the Cooktown Amateur Turf Club.

Lighter winds tease boaties A break of lighter winds mid-week last week allowed smaller boats to hit the inshore reef, as the weekend drew closer the fans wound up, and conditions we marginal at best. Looking ahead the weather looks similar with moderate winds peaking to about 20 knots with a few breaks around 15 knots so we just have to be ready. The rivers are steady with a number of larger fish testing gear to the max. There was a few more barrra in

the mix last week, as well as grunter, golden trevelly and queen fish. As we build to the moon, the tides will bring bait and clean water on the flood tides. Broncos’ loss is Eels’ gain as Jack signs with Parra By COREY BOUSEN FORMER Cooktown junior rugby league player Jack Morris thought his path to an NRL career would be an “easy journey”, having signed a three year contract with the Brisbane Broncos junior academy at the age of 14. The journey came to a screeching halt at the end of last year, when the Broncos decided not to take up the option for the third year of Jack’s contract. “I signed with the Brisbane Broncos at the start of 2010 and prior to that, in Grade 9, I was part of their development work,” Jack told Cooktown Local News in a phone interview this week. The multi-year deal saw Jack travel from his current hometown of Gympie to Brisbane for training with the Broncos 10 times in 2011 and another 25 times in 2012. But despite the many trips between Gympie and Red Hill, Jack wasn’t able to convince the Broncos that he had

what they needed. “I thought I had it. I thought an NRL career was going to be handed to me. I thought it would be an easy journey,” he admits. With his once promising rugby league career now hanging in the balance at the end of 2012, Jack spent some time surfing during the school holidays and also putting some thought as to where his future lay. With some time to digest the Broncos rejection, Jack decided that he still had the hunger, and would do his best to achieve his NRL dreams in 2013. To that end, Jack dazzled at the 18 years State Secondary Rugby League Carnival in Kingaroy at the end of May, and was swamped by NRL talent scouts. In the ensuing two months, the Newcastle Knights and the Parramatta Eels emerged as the two organisations prepared to put deals on the table. Jack’s father, Al ‘Screamer’ Morris, who is well known to many in Cooktown as the drummer with the

ever popular Roadtrippers, says the Newcastle Knights, with great surfing and a university near by, was the initial favourite for Jack’s signature. “Jack even got a call from Wayne Bennett to say that he had heard good things about him. So that was a bit of a buzz for Jack. “We travelled down to Newcastle and Parramatta for a week and checked things out, and the family was going to move to Newcastle next year, but, late in the piece, Jack has decided to go with Parramatta,” Al reveals. Commenting on the Eels deal, Jack admits it’s all “pretty amazing”. “It’s an awesome feeling just having this opportunity happening again. I’m just really pumped about it and I can’t wait to get down to Parramatta,” says the 95kg tackling machine, who plays a variety of positions in the back row. On what swayed him toward Parramatta in the end, Jack says he was impressed with their development setup and the “keenness” with which Parra courted his signature.

“Basically, if I went to the Knights, I would have always been wondering what would have happened if I had gone to the Eels,” Jack says. With the Eels offer verbally accepted in the last fortnight, Jack is due to sign the paperwork in the very near future. As Jack is finishing year 12 this year, he will take Schoolies Week off for a much-anticipated trip with his mates to the Gold Coast, and will leave his family for his life with the Eels shortly thereafter. Jack will play with the Eels Under 18 in 2014, and hopes to step up to the Under 20 in the near future. If he’s able to prove his abilities at that level, then an NRL career will be the next step. Al says he couldn’t be prouder of his son, but admits it was “a bit of a shock” with Jack’s last-minute decision to opt for the Eels over the Knights. “Jack is just a happy lad. I’m proud of how he handled himself during all the negotiations and basically, in the

end, we really trust what he thinks and it was his own decision as to where he went in the end.” People who attended Black Mountain Unplugged on the weekend would have seen Jack’s sister Yasmin (performing as Yasmini) make her career debut, showing as much talent on the stage as Jack does on the footy field. Finishing her set with a duet with her mum, Gypsy, the 15-year-old Yasmin was a musical highlight of the weekend. (See Yasmin and Gypsy on stage on page13). Back to the football, and Jack admits that there has been a recent change in allegiance regarding who is his favourite NRL team; which has been the Broncos, for obvious reasons. As fate has it, the Broncos and the Eels are facing off in Brisbane this Friday night at Suncorp Stadium and Jack will be in attendance to watch the game - in a Parramatta Eels jersey.

Bat, pads, snorkel and goggles packed for Rainforest Cup

Chat with Matt

G’day again, IT’S a pity we couldn’t have shown our current form earlier in the season as we wouldn’t be fighting for a place in the top eight as we are now. Our 36-4 hammering of the Panthers in Penrith on Sunday night was a great team effort, scoring six converted tries. I’m not sure why we struggled earlier in the season, but at present everyone is doing their job and we’ve been training well leading up to the games. That’s the biggest thing for us. One of the strongest aspects of the game was that the Panthers scored one try and a lucky one at that. They couldn’t get through us and had to go around us - our defence was outstanding. If we can maintain this form over the final four rounds, we’re still in with a chance of making the top eight. We need to win every game, and, even if we do that, we’ll need a couple of results to go our way. But we’re still in there with a chance, so it’s up to us to keep winning - that’s all we can do. I just hope we haven’t left our run too late. We have the Titans at home at 1300SMILES Stadium in Townsville on Saturday. They’re coming off a good 26-16 win against the Bulldogs on Monday night which probably surprised everyone after they’d lost a few on the trot last month. But they now have had successive wins after beating the Tigers a fortnight ago. So they’ll come into the game full of confidence after that result and will want to hang on to their spot in the top eight. We haven’t discussed the game against the Titans yet, but will do so closer to the game. But we need to concentrate on our game and not worry about what the Titans might or might not do. I think everyone has pulled up fit with no injuries, and I don’t expect any changes to the side after such a good win. On a personal note, I’m hoping to settle my future this week. It’d been great to get it sorted out and can put that behind me. My manager handles all that side of it, and it would be good to put it in the “done” basket. Don’t forget to watch us on TV, with the game starting at 5.30. Until next week - Matt Bowen.

COOKTOWN and Hope Vale cricketers may receive coverage on national television when they contest the 2013 Rainforest Cup Indigenous cricket carnival at Tully and Innisfail in October. Tully is one of Australia’s wettest towns and often games are interrupted by rain at the carnival which has a unique atmosphere. The carnival will be held on the weekend of October 4 and 5. In past years the Cooktown Crocs XI have been among the strongest sides. Last year the side reached the semi-finals, and the year before, qualified for the grand final before losing narrowly. Cooktown Crocs spokesman Selwyn McIvor told the Cooktown Local News that his side was looking forward to the carnival. “The boys who will play with us have been going well in the local cricket competition here in Cooktown and we will be trying hard at the Rainfor-

est Cup,” he said. Selwyn nominated Tim Rosendale, Preston Deemal, Errol Kulka, Geoffrey Kulka and Errol Ross-Kelly as players who would perform well at the Rainforest Cup. Two years ago, Errol Kulka slammed one of the biggest sixes in Cup history which is still talked about. The ball travelled an estimated 90m and cleared a high fence around a business well outside the field. Fielders had to climb the fence to retrieve the ball so the game could continue. When told that organisers were negotiating with NITV to cover the event, Selwyn was delighted. “That would give us

some national coverage and recognition,” Selwyn said. Ten teams are expected to battle it out for honours on turf wickets, while the Cooktown competition is played on concrete wickets covered with mats, with the difference in playing surfaces being a major disadvantage to the Crocs. Organising committee member Stan Lenoy said that hopefully a ladies’ match would also be played. “On October 4 we hope to have a game between two of the original communities that competed in the first Rainforest Cup, Mt Garnet and Jumbun but most matches will be played on the weekend,” Stan said.

Wombat_101 increases lead even further WOMBAT_101 now is only one win short of being a complete round in front of the field after round 22 of the Cooktown Local News/Hinterland Aviation/ Inn Cairns NRL footy tipping competition. Wombat_101 sits on 122 after registering six wins, with only four rounds remaining. The Titans’ upset win against the Bulldogs on Monday night undid most tipsters with only Gracie and Harry the Bear selecting the Gold Coast side. The Knights’ last-gasp win against the Sharks also caught out most tipsters. Obviously no one tipped all eight winners, with

Wazza the only one to nominate seven winners. With six were Wombat_101, Nikki, Prickly. Trailling Wombat_101 (6 wins), seven in arrears on 115 is Eye of the Tiger (5). Beagleb2 (5) is one further back on 114, one in front of TheFantasticMrsFox (5) on 113. Nikki (6) is on 111. 107: Wazza (7). 106: Camf (4), Prickly (6). 104: Pootie Tang (5), Maggie_P (5). 103: Matthew Thompson (5). 100: bubsie1981 (4).
