Pilots help give angels wings

Pilots Nick Clarke and Mike Levy with Cook Shire CEO Steve Wilton (centre) at the Cooktown airport on Tuesday.

By COREY BOUSEN

FLYING around in a tiny airplane, visiting 44 Queensland towns in 17 days, may not be everybody’s ideal holiday, but for pilots Nick Clarke and Mike Levy it is a great way to raise awareness of a great cause. The duo is undertaking the epic journey on behalf of the Angel Flight charity and landed at Cooktown Airport at lunchtime on Tuesday. Cook shire CEO Stephen Wilton met the pair at the airport as their flight is supported by the Queensland branch of Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA), and the pilots enjoyed a barbeque at Lions Park with Cook Shire councillors and staff. Cooktown was the most northerly port-of-call and was 23rd stop on their itinerary that covers 44 towns in 42 council areas. With their journey beginning in Caboolture on August 12, the aviators will continue their cracking pace,

Council may use warrants and Police to access ‘no trespass’ properties By COREY BOUSEN COOK Shire Council says it will seek court-issued warrants, and be accompanied by police where necessary, to gain access to properties in the Endeavour Valley as part of its current “Approved ‘Selective’ Inspection Program”, which aims to discover non-compliant and illegally constructed buildings in the area. The threat of legal action looms as some residents have sought their own legal advice on the matter, and believe it is illegal for the council to enter their property if they post ‘no trespass’ signs and put locks on their gates. The program was approved by Council at its June meeting this year, with inspections getting underway on 29 July. The inspection program, which is due to conclude by 25 October,

The inspection program covers an area bounded by and including: Oaky Creek Road, Endeavour Valley Road, Poison Creek Road and Wilton Access, and has arisen in the wake of protest by some residents earlier this year against council waste collection being extended to the area. With some of the affected parties complaining to Cooktown Local News that the inspection program is a form of “payback” for their protests over the waste issue, Mr McCrae firmly denies this is the case. “Why would we want to create all this extra work for ourselves if we didn’t need to?” he said. “Following the decision by council to increase the waste collection area, there were a number of statements from residents in the area that there were people living there that didn’t have approval” for their dwellings and other structures.

Council also compared images from Google Earth 2006 to those contained in Google Earth 2012 and it “is obvious that there has been quite a substantial increase in buildings and we also know from our records what buildings are lawful and which ones aren’t”, Mr McCrae said. To date, the council says it has conducted inspections along the whole of Endeavour Valley Road. “There are some properties that don’t have any problems and there are some properties that have carried out illegal building work,” Mr McCrae said. For those caught out, they must now go through the approval process with council, which includes having plans drawn up, soil tests conducted, bringing buildings up to code, where required, and submitting the paperwork to council. Three Rivers comp. fails for 2013 season By Corey Bousen

PETER Scott, President of the Three Rivers Senior Rugby League competition, was at the John Street Oval, while the referee, whistle in hand, had driven up from Mareeba and was in his uniform ready to earn his night’s pay. Even Cooktown Local News was there to take photos of the action. All that was missing was the four teams of rugby league players who were meant to face off for a night of rugby league competition. Clearly disappointed at the failure of the night of rugby league to come together, Mr Scott says a round-robin competition will be organised for a weekend in the near future and the winner of that will be determined as the winner of the Three Rivers Competition for 2013, with no more games to be organised beyond that. has gone smoothly to date with 50 council inspections of properties having already occurred. But the council admits there are some landowners who are blocking their efforts. “We do have a right to access the land,” Ian McCrae, Director of Planning and Environment Services, told Cooktown Local News. “Where someone has installed a ‘no trespassing’ sign and have a bolted or locked gate we would need to get a warrant from the court for those premises that we feel are an issue.” Mr McCrae said the council was reluctant to pursue legal action against obstructive landowners but highlighted that no property in the designated area will be exempt from inspection. “We have to be fair and inspect every property in that area,” he said.

visiting another 21 towns in eight days before ending their journey at Dunwich, on North Stradbroke Island, on August 28. Mr Clarke, whose day-job is as a senior manager with Redland City Council, said the primary aim of the flight was to increase awareness about the work of Angel Flight, while also undertaking some fundraising. Angel Flight is a charity that coordinates non-emergency flights to help country people trying to deal with “the triple trouble of bad health, poor finances and daunting distance”. All Flights are free and may involve patients travelling to medical facilities anywhere in Australia. Pilots donate their time to the charity and are only reimbursed for the cost of fuel.  letters to the editor Don’t be complacent with checking for ticks WE lost our dog Falkon to a paralysis tick bite last week and it was not a pleasant experience. Looing back now we were very naïve on the facts of a Paralysis Tick Bite, we had been told many things by good intentioned locals but unfortunately most of this was not relevant. I just want to share some facts with you that we learnt from the Vet, and our experience so as Falkons death is not in vain and hopefully we may be able to help someone out their save

their loved one. Firstly if your dog shows any signs of being off colour and losing some strength, immediately check him thoroughly for a tick. The Vet said to get five people to check to make sure. You have to eliminate the tick threat first before you look for something else. If you find a tick pull it out ASAP. It doesn’t matter if the head doesn’t come out, you can remove that later, the poison is produced in the body not the head.

so it is a lot cheaper to check every two days. Don’t get complacent. The first sign of Falkon being sick was he only just made it jumping into the back of the ute on Tuesday morning. We did get him to the Vet but he died 40 hours later. Antivenin has a 95% success rate. We all hope that this has helped somebody. Peter Skipworth Congratulations to 12-year-old Harison Stroppe for his winning entry, “Hanging Around”, for our weekly Cornett’s IGA and Cooktown Local News photo competition. Reducing the wildfires hazard Cooktown Local News spotted Chris Wall and Janie White from Queensland Parks and Wildlife carrying out a controlled burn last Thursday, 15 August. The hazard-reduction burn was conducted over a 10 sq. km area near the Annan River on the Mulligan Highway and is part of an ongoing strategy aimed at minimising the hazard from wildfires in the district.

dog. If you do this you are pretty safe. Have a dog with short hair or get it cut regularly. Tick collars, Frontline and regular washing help a lot but you still need to check the dog every two days. Falkon had a swim everyday to so this is probably not a good habit but what do you do as he loved swimming. Their is a good photo of a tick on Google Wikileaks if you don’t know what to look for. It was an expensive exercise (virtually $700)

Never use kero or Vaseline or any other substance to get it out this will only make the Tick inject more poison into your pet. Ticks also bury under the skin (this was what got Falkon). If you find a lump under the skin (this is not Vet’s advice) but I would cut it out immediately and get the dog to a Vet ASAP. If you have bandicoots in your area you will also have paralysis ticks. You should check your dog every two days as this is how long it takes for the tick’s poison to effect the

By Corey Bousen COOK Shire Council, at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, voted to receive a petition against the fluoridation of the local water supply and has asked for a council manager to prepare a report on the issue. The petition, with 545 signatures, was handed over to council by local group ‘Safe Water for Cooktown People’ last week and follows weeks of discussion on the topic in the pages of the Cooktown Local News. “I’m very conscious of the fact that there is fair bit of division in the community about this issue,” Mayor, Councillor Peter Scott, said during discussions with councillors about the petition. Engineering Services Director Tony Lickiss will author the report on fluoridation and told councillors that it will “be based on the best scientific information available”. Mr Lickiss’ report will be discussed at Council’s October meeting, during which one representative for both the for and against side of the debate will be invited to speak to council.

THE Freedom Flotilla, an international diplomatic incident in the making, was in Cooktown this week as its members made preparations for the sea journey from Cooktown to the Torres Strait and on to the likelihood of jail in the Indonesian territory of West Papua. The Flotilla is a convoy of three yachts with around 20 activists, which departed Cairns on August 17. They want to highlight human rights abuses by the Indonesian government in West Papua by sailing through the Torres Strait and into Indonesian waters. They plan to sail to the easternmost town in West Papua of Merauki. The Indonesian government has threatened to deploy its navy and air force against the Freedom Flotilla, while the Australian Govern-

ment has issued a formal written warning them that they face significant criminal penalties if they breach PNG or Indonesian immigration laws. Freedom Flotilla member Jacob Rumbiak as a man who has spent 12 years in Indonesian jails and who was subjected to torture while detained as a political prisoner - is well aware of the dangers faced in undertaking the journey. “I was put in 12 different jails and eight Indonesian military camps but I have never complained about this because I want to give the best to my country before I die,” Mr Rumbiak, who is Foreign Minister for the exiled West Papuan government, told Cooktown Local News. “I left my home more than 35 years ago. I am now 58 and I would like to go home to be free,” he said.

Fisher candidate visits Cooktown By COREY BOUSEN

DANIEL McCarthy, top-ofthe-ticket Senate candidate for the Australian Fishing & Lifestyle Party, was in Cooktown this week to meet community members and push his party’s agenda for the upcoming federal election. Cairns-based Mr McCarthy is the skipper of the 47ft charter boat Moana, which regularly visits Cooktown and Lizard Island while on marlin fishing charters. High on the party’s priority list is the scrapping of the

Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve, which will become subject of a management plan from July 2014. “There is a sad lack of a balanced view, particularly in the area of environmental protection and marine conservation and the fair and equitable access to marine resources,” Mr McCarthy told Cooktown Local News. Labelling the management plan as “the dubious initiative of an American lobby group called the PEW Foundation (founded on oil money)”, the party says the

impending restrictions on the use of the Coral Sea were “foisted upon Cape York fishing interests by the then incumbent Labor government, beholding as they were to the Greens Party”. With the party claiming Premier Campbell Newman’s LNP has reneged on a deal to repeal the park declaration, opting instead for a review, the fishing party is keen to have a stake in the Senate balance-ofpower in Canberra. Just falling short of this mark at the 2010 election,

Fishing Party candidate for the Senate Daniel McCarthy was in Cooktown on Monday to introduce himself to the local community. Mr McCarthy will be the “The other major issue top-of-the-ticket candidate on the Cape that I see is for the party this time the ridiculous notion that in around. dire circumstances graziers Claiming to be much can’t access national parks more than a one-issue party, to graze their cattle. So if you can’t make it to a polling place in your state or territory on election day, make sure you vote early. You can apply for a postal vote, or vote at any early voting centre.

WHAT’S blue and white and very cool? It’s the new ice-vending machine that was installed on Charlotte Street on Tuesday this week. The Kooler Ice machine, located in the Everything Electrical car park, supplies 7kgs of ice for $4, 24 hours a day. Kooler Ice is a national franchise, with Hope Vale Welding’s Peter Chippendale taking on the local franchise with a bit of help from his son Blake (16), who has just started working for his father as a refrigeration and air-conditioning apprentice mechanic. Kooler Ice’s Paul Avery drove the USA-made machine up from Port Macquarie and says the Cooktown unit is the 50th of its type in Australia. The vending machine triple filters local water to produce cubed ice that is manufactured and bagged on the spot without any human involvement. Mr Chippendale said people wishing to make bulk ice orders can contact him directly.

Community tribute to Vietnam Veterans

A GROUP of nearly 40 people attended the Long Tan Day Memorial Service at Anzac Park on Sunday morning. The day is also marked as Vietnam Veterans’ Day, and commemorates the 521 Australians who died during the war. Cooktown RSL SubBranch President Wally Williams told those who gathered that the day also served as reminder for all Australians who have served in an overseas conflict. Highlighting that many people who served in Vietnam returned to Australia with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Mr Williams highlighted the good work of the “Mates4Mates” notfor-profit organisation,

which was set up by the Queensland Branch of the RSL to provide support to wounded, injured or ill members of the Australian Defence Force and their families. Cook Shire Mayor Councillor Peter Scott said he was finishing school during the time of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War and recalled the injury and death of his friends during the conflict. He also spoke of the “abuse, abandonment and disregard” Australian diggers received upon returning home. “When we say ‘Lest We Forget’, let us remember that they [Australians who served in the Vietnam War] cannot forget,” he concluded.

Three Rivers League comp. fails for 2013 << From Page 1 With one team eventually showing up last Friday night, Mr Scott said the collapse of the Three Rivers competition was due to a “lack of commitment from players and team management”. “We need to learn a few lessons from this year, including getting some local referees trained up and I’m working with QRL to do that”. QRL has responded to last Friday night’s failure, opting to exclude a Three Rivers team from playing in a Northern Pride curtain-raiser match against Kowanyama in Cairns in early September.

A Cairns-based Reserve Grade team is expected to take the place of the Three Rivers team in the game. “Dave Maiden, who is the Regional co-ordinator for the QRL in Cairns, is not going to worry about a Three Rivers team playing in the match against Kowanyama. Dave helped us get a ref. up to Cooktown on Friday night so he’s a bit disillusioned about the commitment,” Mr Scott said. Campbell: A modern-day Waltzing Matilda Story and photo By ALF WILSON CAMPBELL Irving is known as a modern-day Waltzing Matilda and said he enjoyed his recent visit to the area to attend the Black Mountain Unplugged event. The 61-year-old Mr Irving is a unique Australian, considered one of a kind and travels around the country with a swag, billy and sleeping bag and is recognizable by his long black beard. “I live at no known address and consider myself a modern Waltzing Matilda and hitchhike between cities. “and last week I had a great time in the Cooktown area, near the Lions Den Hotel in August. It was great to catch up with lots of people up that way,” he said. For the past 25 years the New Zealand born, part Aborigine and part Maori, has roamed the country and the Cooktown Local News caught up with him at the Townsville Cultural Fest on August 18. More than 70,000 people attended over five days and Swaggie Campbell was reciting poetry and singing there. In front of him was his

trademark swag, other gear and a container holding gold coins from appreciative people who enjoyed his busking. “I have also been to the Laura Festival and at Kuranda recently and love my life,” he said. Swaggie Campbell follows the country music festival circuit and is a regular at places like Tamworth each year. Between cities he sleeps where he can like beside the highway in his swag and also enjoys billy tea. “But I never drink while I am working which is doing my verse as a busker. “I am a street performer and have even travelled up to the Torres Strait region at the top end and to Weipa many times,” he said. He hitchhikes most of the time and loves spending nights out in the scrub under the stars. When it rains Mr Irving will sleep in his swag under the end of a bridge or wherever he can find shelter. Campbell said that there was no town in Australia which he could call home. “I never know where I will be from one week to the next. Like a swaggie,” he said. Campbell Irving - the genuine Aussie swaggie.

Investing in our health workforce for a better state of health.

The Queensland Government is committed to looking after our health workforce. That’s why we’ve invested $1.35 billion in pay-rises for Queensland Health employees over the next 3 years. This includes a 6% increase for nurses and midwives since April last year, with a further 3% next year making a total of $592 million. A 2.5% increase for medical officers, meaning an extra $300 million invested across the workforce. And a 3% increase for employees under the Queensland Public Health Sector Certified Agreement 2011, totalling a further $466 million. We’re committed to rewarding the people who help us to deliver a better state of health. To find out how we’re providing a better state of health, visit health.qld.gov.au/blueprint or look out for our quarterly performance reports.

A memorial of its own for Cooktown

THE Minister has asked me to communicate with the residents of Cooktown concerning your new Government hub building, or The Plinth as is commonly known in architectural circles. The Minister feels strongly that every town should have at least one memorable building. Sydney has the Opera House, Melbourne has its Federation Square, and now Cooktown has The Plinth. For centuries into the future, people will look at its clean, austere lines and wonder at the talent that created it. In fact, the concept was achieved by Dudley, Crum and Associates of Roma. Their brilliant lead architect, who happens to be the Minister’s son, is becoming well known all over south-west Queensland. He says that his design strives to dominate its surroundings by representing all the vestal beauty of a block of polystyrene packing foam. I think Cooktown will agree that he has succeeded wonderfully. Of course, this is only Phase 1. Phase 2, consisting of the erection of a monumental sculpture on The Plinth, is under discussion in Brisbane at the moment. There was some talk by traditionalists of a large statue of Captain Cook. However, once the majority in Parliament realised that

the good Captain was actually a Pom and not Australian at all, that idea was dropped. An offer by the Cooktown fishing fraternity to fund the construction of a magnificent leaping barra was also rejected due to financial difficulties. (When the collection box was opened it was found to contain only $3.85, a NZ dollar, some buttons and a Turkish public telephone token.) We are now moving to approve a major statue of Oberführer Newman. Details have yet to be confirmed, but current plans aim at a 30m bronze statue. The sculptor’s scale model shows The Oberführer, his coiled parliamentary whip in hand and the Cooktown breeze ruffling his coat, staring out to sea with a strong, purposeful expression on his face. We are confident the statue will become the wonder of Cape York. Bruce O’Krat, Advisor to the Minister

Jim’s enjoyable verse THIS week, we have more enjoyable Writers’ verse from Jim Egan who was recently Corner a finalist in Cairns in our ABC North Queensland poetry competition. Jim’s rendition of his poem about a lonely “portaloo” definitely had his audience chuckling. Email your literary efforts for our column, in verse or prose to either : editor@cooktownlocalnews.com.au or thekellers@bigpond.com or post them to: P O Box 645, Cooktown,4895. Please note - We have decided to not have monthly meetings of our Writers’ Group anymore as it is too difficult for interested persons (especially out-of-towners) to organise them into busy lives. Instead, we shall call meetings for “special occasions” and disseminate this information via the Cooktown Local News, local paper, email, phone, carrier pigeon, etc. Dianne Keller, Cooktown Writers’ Group. “The ‘Swaggie” A “swaggie” wandered into town and threw his eye around. He bummed a feed and then he rolled his swag out on the ground. As he slowly went to sleep he dreamed of days long past When he backed horses that were slow and women that were fast; When he could go the fourteen rounds in Jimmy Sharman’s tent Then go and win a two-up game with players who were bent. He dreamed of days he rode all day to yard a thousand steers Then wandered into Rosie’s pub to guzzle endless beers; Then staggered up the stairs to spend the night with “Rosie’s Girls”; Then go home stoney broke next day, their perfume in his curls. He dreamed of what he might have been (a millionaire perhaps) If only he had lived his life without its deadly traps. He may have had a wife and kids to love him in old age But now he has to pay the price for tearing out that page. If only he could find some place to rest his lonely head. They found him in his swag next morn all stiff and stoney dead. He hadn’t lost his humour though. He wrote before he died, “If I’m not yet a bastard, well, I’ll have you know I tried! I need a peaceful place to camp forever and a day. I don’t want bloody cars or bikes or trains there in me way. I want me neighbours to be quiet and never make a sound. I only need to read their names and know that they’re around. I’d like a tidy little yard that’s neat and nicely mowed. I’d like to face the rising sun, not too far off the road. I’d like a visit now and then from friends that I once knew. Perhaps they’ll stop and have a yarn if they’re just passing through. I can’t afford to pay the council anything for rates. I can’t afford to buy the paint to brighten up the gates. I’ve battled all me bloody life and it’s been flamin’ hard! Just let me rest for evermore inside a neat graveyard. By JIM EGAN

Minke whales tagged at Cooktown and tracked in world first FOUR dwarf minke whales have been tagged and tracked in a world first pilot study by a collaboration of Australian and international scientists. The whales were tagged near Cooktown last month and are now being tracked as they race down the east coast of Australia. James Cook University’s Dr Alastair Birtles, who has been studying the dwarf minke whales for 18 years as they gather each winter off Lizard Island in northern Queensland, said that the pilot study was an attempt to solve one of the great mysteries of the oceans: Where do dwarf minkes go after wintering in the Great Barrier Reef? “Although they occur all around the Southern Hemisphere, the GBR hosts the world’s only known predictable aggregation of these exquisitely beautiful little whales,” Dr Birtles said. A multi-million dollar swim-with-whales ecotourism industry has emerged over the past 20 years that for a few weeks each year provides a thousand or so fortunate people with extraordinary, often life-changing wildlife encounters. The whales, mostly five to seven metres in length, are an as yet undescribed subspecies that visit the GBR for a few weeks in the depths of winter when the seas are at their coldest and roughest. They went un-noticed in the GBR by both scientists and Reef managers until the 1980s. The successful tagging was achieved at the end of the 18th consecutive Minke field research season for the JCU-based Minke Whale Project, lead by Dr Birtles and the CSIRO’s Dr Matt Curnock, working in conjunction with John Rumney of Eye to Eye Marine Encounters of Port Douglas and Secretary of the Cod Hole and Ribbon Reef Operators Association. “We were joined this year by Dr Russ Andrews of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Alaska SeaLife Center, a world renowned telemetry expert who has previously been involved in tagging over 20 species of marine mammals,” Dr Birtles said. The pilot study was conducted from the state-of-theart Research Vessel Whale Song on the invitation of its operators Curt and Micheline Jenner of the Western Australian Centre for Whale Research. The Whale Song is a sonically and infra-sonically quiet ship used by the Australian Defence Department for such things as acoustic signature measurements, and was made available to the project by the Jenners while the ship was transiting between listening exercises. The transmitters were attached to the four whales on July 13 and 14 during two long days in the water with a large group of whales at the top of Ribbon Reef #10 east of Lizard Island on the outer barrier of the northern GBR. On Monday (August 12), the first whale to be tagged (MWsat1) a young male called ‘Spot’, had left the GBR far behind and was speeding south along the edge of the continental shelf off Sydney, having covered an amazing journey - so far - of almost 3,000 km in less than 30 days. Not far behind him was a female known as ‘Deep Scars’ (MWsat3) and a third whale called ‘High White’ (MWsat2) was circling in the GBR lagoon east of Shoalwater Bay. The last whale, a female called ‘Grey Waves’ (MWsat 4), initially appeared reluctant to leave the northern reefs but had started to travel faster along the shelf margin and was north east of Townsville. “Tracking them via the ARGOS website is proving one of the most exciting experiences of my research career,” Dr Birtles said. “Their tracks have transformed our understanding of the movements of these animals which up to this point we had only documented by divers re-sighting them and taking underwater photographs of their unique colour patterns, which we use to identify individual animals”. Jimmy White, a postgraduate just completing his PhD at JCU, applied all four of the tags to the dorsal fins of the whales and said that it was the most challenging but satisfying wildlife tagging experience he had ever been involved in. The small LIMPET tags, about the size of a matchbox, are designed to be minimally-invasive and are attached to the dorsal fin with two medical-grade titanium darts 4mm in diameter. Dr Andrews said that the darts eventually fall out and their fins heal over completely afterwards.

<< From Page 9 “They have now been on for a month, which is about the average duration of attachment for the 20 species of cetaceans that Dr Andrews has been involved in tagging,” Dr Birtles said. “But we are hoping that they stay on long enough to see where the the whales go when they leave Australian waters.” Dr Curnock said that the North Queensland dive tourism industry had collaborated very closely with researchers from the Minke Whale Project. “My PhD studied the life-chang-

ing experiences that swimmers have with these wonderful little whales - and the sustainable management of this industry that has grown up based on them,” he said. “Encounters with these whales are one of the finest wildlife experiences on Earth and they were recently voted the ‘Most profound wildlife secret’ in Australia and ‘Queensland’s top travel secret’ in the Australian Traveller’s 100 Best Travel Secrets of Australia - so they are economically very important to the North Queensland community as well as to the tourists who travel from all over the world to swim with them.

“This new research will help to establish some of the risks and threats that the whales face when they leave the Great Barrier Reef.” One of the unexpected immediate outcomes of the research was a close collaboration between the research team tracking the whales, the Australian Defence Force and GBRMPA as the first two animals headed straight for Talisman Saber 2013, the massive joint exercise between Australia and the USA. The Royal Australian Navy and the TS2013 environmental management teams worked closely with the research team, sending regular updates to the fleet and

ensuring that any activities that might have harmed the migrating whales were conducted many hundreds of kilometres away in international waters. “These tags are providing vital information already,” said Mr Jenner, who helped to relay information to colleagues in Defence. The team will work closely with Defence in the planning for the next Talisman Saber exercise in 2015. The research has been conducted under Animal Ethics Approval from James Cook University and a Marine Parks permit from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Council to use warrants and Police to access ‘no trespass’ properties << From Page 1 Mr McCrae said council has been contacting affected landowners by phone to seek permission for access and to convenient arrange inspection times. “If they refuse access and confirm that in writing then we will have to go to the magistrate’s court to get a warrant and, if there is an issue with people, we would ask the local police to accompany us when we

do the inspection,” he said. Beyond the issuance of the warrant to access the property, the council says it is an offence under the Summary Offences Act 2009 to “obstruct an authorised person in the exercise of their powers... unless the person has a reasonable excuse.” A two-page council document titled “Your Questions Answered” about the “Approved Inspection Program”, prepared by law

firm MacDonnells Law, says council staffers may “chose to tape-record discussions” with landowners. “This is not illegal,” the document states. It also notes that there is a maximum penalty of $5500 in people are prosecuted in the Magistrate’s Court for obstructing a council officer in the conduct of their duty. Affected residents who spoke to Cooktown Local News about the inspection program would not comment on-the-record but did say their was a high level of anxiety about the inspections. “Our friendly community has now become a place of locked gates and warning signs, such a pity that this has all come about by a motion moved by our local councillors,” one resident said. “The area has now

become uninviting to potential property purchasers with “No Trespass” signage on around 35 per cent of properties and locked gates on about 65 per cent of properties. “Let’s hope they do not extend the Inspection Area to the rest of the shire as Cooktown will surly show itself as being a town full of unwelcoming residents,” the landowner said. Residents who say council does not have the right to enter their land without being invited are relying on the Plenty v Dillon case, where the High Court of Australia found: “The general policy of the law is against government officials having rights of entry on private property without the permission of the occupier. “If the courts of common law do not uphold the rights

of individuals by granting effective remedies, they invite anarchy, for nothing breeds social disorder as quickly as the sense of injustice which is apt to be generated by the unlawful invasion of a person’s rights, particularly when the invader is a government official,” the High Court decision states. Mr McCrae said it was in the best interest of landowners to ensure their building were council approved to prevent problems with insurance claims or in selling their properties in the future. Some residents are in the very difficult situation of having bought a building they thought was a legally habitable dwelling, when it actually is not. “We’re trying to help people, not hinder them,” Mc McCrae said.

Theatre adds a new element for Wallaby Creek Festival WALLABY Creek Festival 2013 would like to upstage their own previous festivals by introducing a new element to their patrons’ enjoyment - Theatre! Look out for “The Scream” - le Humane Condition - on Friday and Saturday night of the festival. Guillaume “Willem” Brugman from the Cairns branch of the Australasian Theatre and six other members are bringing vaudeville and comedy to the festival’s main stage and workshops marquee, while Wally (Daniel) Wallwork will be assisting the kids (and big kids!) with their aerosol painting skills and engaging them in workshops creating the new backdrop for the main stage. This year’s themes are water cooperation or sharing, the Chinese year of the snake and common unity. Arts and music are the common elements that bring the community together with visitors, creating the unity that humanity seeks. The brand new backdrop (first in five years) for the main stage will incorporate a waterfall, a giant python and whatever else the artists and workshop participants desire that incorporates the theme of common unity, or community.

Countdown to

Wallaby

Creek This exciting project Festival is possible due thanks to a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant and will bring new skills of stage/theatre to Cooktown and districts, giving people a wider access to the arts and inspiring them to create their own stage show and/or helping them to find their passion. Stage/performance skills include Breathing; Alignment; Vocalisation; Movement and Improvisation. This project will also benefit workshop participants with artistic skills such as layout, design, colour and spray painting as well as teamwork, cooperation and cross-platform interaction. The Regional Arts Development Fund is a Queensland Government and Cook Shire Council partnership to support local arts and culture. Wallaby Creek Festival is a three day music and arts festival and is on the 27-29 September, at Home Rule Rainforest Lodge and Campgrounds, Rossville, 30 minutes before Cooktown on the coast road. By SANDY JONES THE inaugural Great Barrier Reef Masters Games were hosted at various venues across Cairns on Thursday, 8-11 August. Four days of sport and fun included athletics- track and field, athletics- road and trail (Great Pyramid Race), baseball, basketball, cricket, beach volleyball, dragon boating, futsal, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, softball, squash, swimming, tennis and touch. Entry also included free access to the night entertainment at the Games HUB Wharf Street, Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal. The Games attracted more than 2000 national and international sportsmen and women, volunteers and supporters. I was there to support my mum, Susan Forsyth, a young 77-year-old virgin Master Swimmer at Woree Bicentennial Aquatic Centre. Provided you can swim and are 18 years or older you can join Masters Swimming. You need not be a highly competitive swimmer, or even want to compete, whatever your needs Master Swimming Queensland Clubs will cater for your particular needs. http://www.mastersswimmingqld.org.au for more information Cairns Master Swimming Club are called The Mudcrabs, affectionately known as the Muddies, did a fantastic job organising 22 events which started on Friday and concluded on Sunday afternoon. The races were organised so competitors swam with others of similar abilities, gauged by their nominated time. If you don’t have a time yet, then you go in the slower heats and race places are awarded according to age group. The youngest age groups represented were 30-34 for women and 35-39 for men. The oldest age groups were 90-94 for women and 80-84 for men, with plenty in between. It was very inspiring to see so many fit, healthy and happy people of ALL ages, cultures, genders, abilities across many generations. As my Mum is currently the ONLY Swim Master in Cooktown, she joined The Barbarians, a Masters Swimming club for nomads, or individuals who don’t have or can’t access a local Masters Swimming Club. Over the past few years, she has tried to rally up a local team, as Cooktown has many dedicated swimmers who regularly put in long laps at Cooktown pool, but so far no takers. Mum has been encouraged, coached and supported by The Cooktown Swimming Club over 2012-2013 swimming season, the pool attendants over the last few years. Her club team mates were the Junior Tree Frogs, ranging in age from 9-11 years, who helped with their swimming tips along the way. She usually trains daily, to improve her personal best and to prepare for her first Masters Games. Attending

Cooktown BEAT IT twice a week also helps make stronger bones and muscles, improve balance, range of movement, flexibility and confidence. You see, Mum has only recently mastered swimming. She couldn’t swim 25 metres three or four years ago, having to stop at the edge to catch her breath. Her passion, skills and determination to not let it beat her, began at Cooktown Pool. She then spent six months in Darwin and discovered Master Swimmers up there. She had found like-minded people, some with the same coloured hair as herself, equally dedicated to improving their abilities and choosing an active healthier lifestyle. So how did she go last weekend? I think her grin in this photo says it all. She entered five events and proudly displays five medals, three third places and two second places. One of these races stands out above the rest . . . 50m butterfly. Mum had never done butterfly until this year. Getting your arms up and out of the water can be quite difficult as your shoulder joints get older, and it is the most strenuous or taxing of strokes. At one of the local club time trials she bravely entered 25m, not sure whether she would be able to do it, but she did. Pool Co-ordinator at the time, Roz Smith was ready at the other end with the oxygen, just in case. So it was to Roz, she was thinking “I don’t need oxygen”, as she approached the last 10 of the 50metres butterfly last week. Mum was relieved after every race, finding that she could have swum longer, so is now more confident to enter longer races next time, except Butterfly. She was thrilled to be swimming alongside and getting peer support from her own generation. We met some absolutely lovely people and made special friendships, particularly with the team from Twin Towns Masters at Tweed Heads, pictured. They took us under their wing, showed us the ropes and how they were there to have family fun and swim together. We thank Mudcrabs organiser Cheryl, coach and photographer Sam and fellow competitor Kevin for your enthusiasm, humour and handy tips. So if there is anyone out there inspired by this story, then you too can be a Master. It’s never too late or too early, right now is a good time, Life is Now and only YOU can make your dreams come true.

If they attempt this while standing still, the command is “about face”. If they want to reverse while marching, the command is “to the rear, march”. In either case, there is an abrupt change leading in an entirely different direction. This is a good picture of what genuine repentance

A right view of repentance looks like. It means to change one’s mind and start moving the opposite way. One of the Bible’s greatest preachers of repentance was John the Baptist, who called his hearers to a complete “about face.” He had seen too many shallow gestures where people pretended to repent, but were not willing to change their behavior.

John insisted to be content with that those who their wages. exhibited only In other words, they were to change superficial contheir ways and leave trition should instead “bear From the Pulpit their old patterns of fruits in keeping behavior behind. with repentance” (Luke Repentance includes something else: a willing3:8). When his listeners asked ness to make restitution what he meant by that, they to anyone whom we have were told to share their food wronged. and clothing, to be fair in When Zaccheus the tax their business practices, and collector received Jesus into

his house, he showed the true nature of his repentance when he said, “If I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much” (Luke 19:8). I wouldn’t ask you to give four times back; but simply to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal how to make amends, and then be obedient to him. Have an awesome week! Pastor Wayne Brennan Cooktown Community Church.

The big question in gardening MANY gardening questions start with, “When should I . . . ?” . While there are always “ideal” times to do different gardening tasks, I’m sure a majority of us simply fit in our gardening time around our busy lives. I personally like it like that. It can get to the stage of becoming a slave to your garden. We can lose a lot of the relaxation and enjoyment that goes along with it if we become too regimented and stressed out if things aren’t being done when they “should” be. For instance - gardening in accordance with the energies of the waxing and waning moon has been proven to be very beneficial, providing a boost to vitality and increased yields. Yet sometimes trying to work the 12 constellations of the Zodiac, and keep up with root days, seed days, flower days and leaf days our own energy can disappear into the cosmos as our heads start to spin. I’m just a believer of enjoying gardening when time permits, if that is what life provides. I also think our tropical climate does help with this sort of haphazard ideology - even though we may not do our planting, seeding, weeding or what ever at the most opportune time, our predominantly warm and wet environment is so conducive with growth it works with us more than against us. Having said that . . . now is a good time to think about a heavy prune. No, not a large cumbersome dried plum, but a serious cut back of woody shrubs in the garden. Once we get to mid/late August we can be pretty sure it isn’t going to get any colder, so our plants will be coming into the warmer “growing” months of Spring. All those garden plants that can and do get long and leggy, like croton, aralia, ixora, duranta, acalypha, hibiscus, dracaena and cordyline can get a good hard prune. Cut them back by a good third. If they are extra long and leggy, don’t be afraid to go harder - it may look a bit stark and bare at first but when the new growth regenerates it will look much better - and that new growth will appear quicker than you think, especially with an application of complete fertiliser, some watering and mulching When pruning, cut back to just above a node where the new growth will come out, and cut at a 45 degree angle. I’m a big fan of the chop and drop method. Instead of taking the prunings to the dump, simply chop them into smaller billet size pieces, 6 to 8 inches, and drop them around the shrubs and let them break down as mulch.

It may take a little more time, but will save time and money loading and taking to the dump, and there’s the benefits of free mulch and your hands and forearms getting a good work out with the secateurs. I find the two best times of year to prune shrubs like this are late August, early September and also around the end of the Wet season, “Aprilish” when the rain has stopped but everything is still wet, warm and growing. During the rainy months is not an ideal time to prune as freshly cut plants are more prone to fungal infections and rotting. But . . . sometimes it may be, that the job gets done when the job gets done. The colours of spring

NATURE is giving us a strong message. Spring is here. Not the artificial calendar spring, but the real spring. The major new spring colours around here are red, burnt orange and yellow. Most impressive are the variable green turning to bright red leaves of the beach almond. Their Mex i ca n h a t s h a p e d branches makes them a beaut street tree in Cooktown and Wujal, but you’ll see them growing naturally along the foreshores everywhere from Cape Trib to Cow Bay. The orange African tulips are out along the Track, especially around Cedar Bay. Yellows are just starting and are featured in various Wattles (acacias), ABOVE: Golden bouquets with Cape Trib at low tide and the all-Aussie golden BELOW: Female Black-necked stork, or Jabiru outside Keatings Lagoon. bouquet looking south towards Cape Trib. Little Estelle O’Shea brought her own spring colours, nicely matched by the orange grass reflected from the hills at Wujal Wujal Falls. Another sign of spring is the return of Torres Strait pigeons to the Low Islands. Chris Harrison from the Daintree ferry tells me that he’s spotted a few small flocks, so they should also be in the Cedar Bay area. They’ll continue to arrive in dribs and drabs for a few weeks to fatten up in the forest before getting down to the serious business of breeding on the Hope and Low Isles. Visitors are always fascinated by the huge number of flowering mango trees. One said “ cars will be skidding through a flood of mango juice, if half the mango flowers set fruit”. We’ll certainly look forward to that! Out to the Coral Sea, the colours are just as bright, but different. The very low afternoon tides and clear skies of the last few days have created some wonderful views of the sparkling Coral Sea, with intense blue and green waters , dark browns from the fringing reef, beige sand foreshore and jungle green. A chance encounter at Keatings Lagoon stirred up and startled a very mixed flock of water birds. How’s this? Royal Spoonbills, Magpie and green pygmy geese, Whistling duck and a lone pelican at the rear. We spotted a lone black-necked stork (old name Jabiru) strolling with its spindly legs outside Keatings Lagoon. Big crocs are regular sights on the Annan and Bloomfield Rivers, although its pays to have a good look. As we drove into the Bloomfield boat ramp, we spotted a 5 metre giant resting, but was apparently unsighted by a couple ABOVE: Estelle O’Shea adding colours to Wujal Falls who had spent 5 minutes unsuccessfully BELOW: Katie, Paul, Ann and Tegan Kirk at Cowie Beach spotting their first croc. Ageing eyes need good binoculars, a camera or an optometrist. Cairns Council have improved a little of the southern end of the Track and are starting the slow process to grade the Track before the next monsoon. Superb weather and more low tides should guarantee great scenery and wonderful walks, so take a trip to the Daintree and Cooktown coastal areas and soak up nature’s colours. LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)

A few unexpected upheavals could threaten to spoil the good atmosphere at home. Use each available moment to strengthen your bonds. Romance. You might take longer than usual getting home from work today. Be patient because there may be a surprise waiting for you.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) An age gap may be less of a problem than you believe. You may have more in common than you think with this person. Romance. Your light-hearted attitude may frustrate your partner. They may understand your playful manner as a clue that you aren’t able to take things seriously.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)

FOR KIDS

A powerful aspect between your Ruling Planet and the Sun means that you should get any problems out into the open. It’s easier than keeping secrets. Romance. This would be an excellent week for a romantic get-together. You’ll both be in just the right mood for a quiet dinner for two.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A present given to you many years ago will help to put you back in contact with this person. Fortunately, they have not forgotten you! Romance. You will be unstoppable this week! The opposite sex will be longing after you! Be choosy about who you decide to spend time with.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Work may be a little slow at the moment. You will need to take charge of things and keep busy. Prepare your office for upcoming projects. Romance. Your partner may be behaving a little strangely this week. Additionally, their view of events may be very different from yours.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)

FINDWORD No. 162 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

Someone you meet might try to get between you and a close friend. They have no chance of succeeding, however! Romance. A direct, but friendly comment from your partner will help to clear the air. You may be shocked at first, but in the end, it’s better to know their true feelings.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th) Make sure that your boss knows how hard you are trying. Every bit of extra effort will help, but it may be a while before you get a promotion. Romance. Your partner may not seem like the same person you had first met. Remember that they are not the only one who has changed.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

You may find it a little harder than usual to express your feelings this week. Do your best to share your emotions with those closest to you. Romance. You may be slightly annoyed with something that your partner has forgotten to do. Allow them a pass, but next time you can complain.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

Spring just around the corner AS the day temps rise the lure casters get excited as 26 Celsius means hot action! A quick look at the Facebook page for Gone-fishing boasts a cracking 70 cm Fingermark , that just a sample of the action from around the estuary this week. Queen fish, Mackerel and Barra have all been in the creels of Estuary anglers this week. With the weather teasing us with lighter winds than last month but just a bit marginal for smaller craft, it sparks hope in the hearts of anglers of that the glassy days of summer are getting closer.

The action of the wharf Sunday morning was exciting with a good mix of action with lighter winds and a flood tide producing great conditions for a morning assault, bait fish were smashed by hungry pelagics with Mackerel, Queenfish and Trevelly all smashing baits, lures and gear. Offshore has been rewarding as the charters have enjoyed great fun with solid catches and a great day of fun had by all; the Sovereign, Flattery Boys and the local Teachers all enjoyed great fishing on local reef with lighters winds.

Great view, little choice SADDLEBAGS was the host for this week’s run, set from her bijou pad overlooking the river. Must be the best view in Cooktown, and on Monday the hash had it all for themselves. The only disadvantage of the place, from the hash’s point of view, is that you do not have too much choice of where to lay a run. This time, for a change, Saddlebags had scrambled across the precipitous slopes opposite the wharf and eventually dropped down onto the road to the Explosives Magazine. From there she led us into Millionaires Row, and then straight up the hill. It was difficult going through the bush, getting steeper and steeper until we came to a fixed rope we used to climb up a cliff. At the top was a marvellous view out over the Coral Sea, which we celebrated with Saddlebag’s strictly non-alcoholic punch. Now we faced a decision. Do we continue up the hill, or face getting back down the cliff on the rope? Most chickened out and continued to climb. Up steep slopes and some serious rockery, eventually arriving exhausted at the light house. Back at the bash, GM Thermo donned her new crown, and I have to tell you it is magnificent and suits her very well.

Dripping with pearls and diamonds, it makes her look very distinguished and all the sparkling glory sets off her pretty eyes to perfection. (Sorry, I have to say these things because I think she is on my case.) She started (very unfairly) by punishing Moses for failing to get the Hash Trash published last week. She then gave a birthday drink to our three Leo hashers, and welcomed a virgin runner No-Name Patric. Then the charges came thick and fast; Miss Laine for attempting to censor the Hash Trash, Moses for being the only hasher who actually reached the very top of Grassy Hill, Saddlebags for a good run and Nostrildumass for, well, just being Nostrildumass. Next week’s run will be hosted by Cracklin, and she will be giving all the details for September’s Who Dunit Party (a first for the Hash). Just turn up at 5:30 pm Monday 26 to join the fun. Call Moses on 4069 5854 / 0409 686 032 for details. On-on! Lye Bak

Javid shows another sporting skill Story and photo By ALF WILSON HOPE Vale’s Javid Bowen is bestknown for making life difficult for opponents when he lines up for the Cowboys in the National under 20 Rugby League competition. The 20-year-old Javid is a cousin of Cowboys star Matt Bowen and was seen taking part in a different sport at Townsville’s RSL Murray Stadium. It was basketball, and Javid was there in his job as a teacher’s aide with Rasmussen State Primary School. It was at the National Indigenous 3on3 Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge - Vibe 3on3 which was attended by hundreds. “I played basketball when I went to Abergowrie College and this has been a good day,” he told the Cooktown Local News. Javid wanted to say a big hello to all of his relatives at Hope Vale. Event Executive Producer Gavin Jones said planning for the Townsville Vibe 3on3 went well, with the local community getting behind the event. Along with a host of inspiring role models including Javid, the event featured a health expo which brought local and regional health organisations together into one area so that young people can connect with the health providers in their communities, and learn about their health in a fun, engaging and interactive environment. “We’ve had an overwhelming response from local health organisations and community groups,” Mr

Javid Bowen enjoys all sports. Jones said. “The Townsville 3on3 Health Expo is promising to be a real feature of the event. “There were interactive elements and give-aways, and lots of information for young people from healthy living through to good mental health and nutrition.” The Vibe 3on3 - is a fun, free event

for all Australians. It encourages sportsmanship, teaches new skills and builds self-esteem as well as promoting reconciliation at a grassroots level. Two nights earlier, Javid kicked five goals for the Cowboys under-20 team when they defeated the South Sydney Rabbitohs 34-16 in Townsville.

Unexpected result in 40-over fixture QUEENS Oval was the venue for the match between Hope Vale Heroes and the Council Diggers on Sunday. Due to lack of numbers, Hope Vale were gracious to let the Diggers bat first to give them time to rally some more players. Billy Dukes and Craig Wason opened but the latter was out in the first over, caught and bowled by Preston Demaal. Zane Stallan joined Billy in the middle and took the score to 17 before Bill was caught by Harry Bowen off Dylan Mitchell’s bowling for 5. Jai Ross was next and was soon back in the sheds for no score. Brodie Welsh scored 1 run before being bowled by Harry Dean, and Deano was at it again two balls later bowling Chris Bliesner for 0. Kevin Dukes was bowled by Timmy Rosendale also for 0 in the next over with the scorebook reading 6 for 44. This brought together the father and son combination of Scott Stallan with Zane. The pair steadied the flow of wickets and put on a solid 50 run partnership before a mistake from Zane saw him short of his ground, run out for an impressive 31. Wal Welsh joined Scott and this pair added another

50 runs before a rush of blood saw Scott nick a wide ball to be caught behind by Timmy off Darren Gibson’s bowling for a well made 64. Thomas Ling who had now made his way to the ground was next but was soon bowled by Darren for 4 with the score at 154. Last man and gun ring in Eril Ross-Kelly joined Wal with 10 overs to go. These two stuck it out to the end and added 81 to give a total of 235 off the 40 overs. Wal was 48 not out and Eril 42 not out. Best bowlers for Hope Vale were Deano and Darren with 2 wickets each. After lunch courtesy of Katrina, Hope Vale set about the chase with Timmy and Esmond Bowen but some tight bowling restricted them, and with the score on 11 Brodie had Esmond caught by Zane for 1. This brought the Captain and one of the form players of the season so far, Selwyn McIvor to the crease. He had only scored 3 runs before Lingy got a delivery to jump and catch the edge of the bat to be caught behind by Craig. Three runs and four balls later Lingy had his second scalp of Timmy, well caught on the boundary by Billy for 24. Preston and

Harry steadied the ship for a while until Jai struck, getting Preston caught behind by Craig for 11. Dylan was next out for 7, stumped by Craig off Wal’s bowling and a few runs later Coley Bowen was out as well. It was 6 for 79 at the first drinks break and the slap together team of young and old with a few ring ins were looking in a commanding position. Harry and Phillip Walker along with Darren put in a stoic batting rear guard, but an all round fielding performance from the Diggers saw them victors as Hope Vale were all out for 169. Man of the Match Brodie took 3 wickets while Lingy and Billy got 2 a piece. Harry top scored with 37 runs. An unexpected result played in great spirit with excellent sportsmanship all round. Thanks to all who helped make the day an enjoyable spectacle. This week sees BMP take on Hope Vale and the following week Council v BMP. The annual Super 8’s competition has been set for 7 and 8 September. Any teams wishing to nominate or for more information please phone Wal on 0400525894 or Katrina on 0400255939.

Is Wombat_101 over the line in tipping comp.? WOMBAT_101 seems to be in an almost impregnable position after round 23 of the Cooktown Local News/Hinterland Aviation/Inn Cairns NRL footy tipping competition. Wombat_101 sits on 127 although registering only five wins from the eight games played. While missing three selections, the challengers in the field were unable to make any inroads into the big margin. Eye of the Tiger also got only five, The FantasticMrsFox got six while Beagleb2 also had five. Nikki did pull two back with seven, but is still

still nine off the pace set by Wombat_101 which is more than one complete round. Tipsters struck out with the Rabbitohs’ win against the Sea Eagles, while no one chose the Panthers against the Warriors. Obviously no one tipped all eight winners, with Nikki the only one to nominate seven winners. Trailling Wombat_101 (5) seven in arrears on 120 is Eye of the Tiger (5). Beagleb2 (5) is one further back on 119, together with TheFantasticMrsFox (6). Nikki (7) is on 118. 113: Wazza (6).
