$2 • PH: 1300 4895 00 • EDITORIAL: editor@cooktownlocalnews.com.au • Issue 630 • Thursday, August 29, 2013 BELOW: Having lived in the West Papua region for most of his life, Poison Creek local Dick Randolph took some time out on Saturday morning to catch up with the Freedom Flotilla at the markets.

One of the Freedom Flotilla vessels moored in the Endeavour River waiting to depart on the last leg of their journey.

The Freedom Flotilla was spreading the word about the situation in West Papua and seeking local support at Saturday’s markets. Seen here are: (front) Izzy Brown with (in back from left) Jundulu Neal, West Papua’s elected Foreign Minister Jacob Rumbiak and Kevin Buzacott. Photos: GARY HUTCHISON.

Local warns Freedom Flotilla about dangers WHILE Poison Creek identity Dick Randolph fully supports the visiting Freedom Flotilla in their efforts to generate great waves of support for a Free West Papua, he holds little hope for their success. In fact, he believes they are headed for a “lot of trouble” when they finally reach the Indonesian territory. “Indonesians don’t take kindly to people trying to enter their country illegally, without passports or visas and on political crusades,” said Dick who spent 38 years of his life living on the West Irian border. “The chances of Indonesia relinquishing its hold on West Papua, a large, underpopulated area with huge natural resources are very slim.”

Dick’s advice to the Flotilla members at last Saturday’s Cooktown Markets that perhaps a state of autonomy rather than complete independence might be a better course to sail. “A state similar to that occurring in some Chinese and Russian states,” he said. He said he believed implicitly in freedom for West Papua and wished them all the success. Meanwhile, the Indonesian propaganda machine rolls on with claims published by the Indonesian website merdeka.com that the Freedom Flotilla is not proceeding, hotly denied by Freedom Flotilla co-founders, Jacob Rumbiak, Uncle Kevin Buzzacott and Izzy Brown last Friday.

Collectively, they asserted they are: “More determined than ever, to make this historic journey to West Papua”. “Our land is calling us, we never stop, our Spirit land is calling us,” said Jacob Rumbiak, West Papua’s exiled, elected Foreign Minister. Mr Rumbiak has spent a total of 12 years in various Indonesian jails and Indonesian military camps. The Freedom Flotilla to West Papua arrived at port in Cooktown at 7.45am last Thursday, with members going on to enjoy the sunshine at the markets, while they tried to engender local support of their quest. The first of the vessels departed Cooktown just after noon last Saturday.

TOURISTS visiting Cooktown’s caravan parks have been targeted by thieves in recent times, with substantial amounts of money and electronic property stolen. Sergeant Shawn Pipia, Acting Officer-in-Charge of Cooktown Police Station, said the offences committed have been sneak, opportunistic attacks on unsecured cars and vans. “What’s been mostly stolen have been digital cameras,” he said. “But there have also been some substantial amounts of money stolen too.” Sgt Pipia said the offences have largely been committed in the last month. “We get these sorts of occurrences in waves,” he said. “But it’s been in the last month that we’ve been hit the hardest.” He said no vehicle or van owner can afford to be apathetic about security. “Cars and vans must be locked, wherever they are being left unattended, regardless of for how long,” he said. “Even a quick stop into a shop to buy a drink is enough time for a thief to strike if the car is unlocked. “Also important is that any valuable items left in vehicles should be hidden and not visible to anyone in the near vicinity of the vehicles.”

AS a land owner in the Cook Shire, I, along with several other land owners, have become very concerned over the local council bureaucracy and its tactics to bluff private property owners into believing Council staff has the power to enter properties without signed, written permission from the property owner under the so called “Approved Selective Inspection Program”. Even more disturbing is the lack of support from the elected councillors. There has been little to no support for the property owners from these people who were elected by these very people to represent them at Council meetings. Instead, the majority of councillors are seen to be supporting the bureaucracy. It’s obvious that councillors supporting this inspection program haven’t bothered to look at how far below the belt they are hitting, with the rural sector in decline and farmers etc experiencing financial hardship, families struggling to pay bills, educate children and so on. Many land owners have rented their properties for next to nothing just to have someone caretake the property while they work abroad. Those of pension age just shut the property down and so the list goes on. Under these circumstances it is not hard to see why property owners, those renting and in general families, feel they are being intimidated by the bureaucracy. Especially when punch lines such as, prosecution in a magistrate court, fines up to $5500, use of police and court-issued warrants, photographs and tape recordings of conversations etc. are clearly listed in the notifications and newspapers. Don’t be fooled by the threat of

court-issued warrants and police enforcement. Magistrates are very cautious when it comes to issuing valid search warrants concerning shire council action, as, in recent years, several High Court decisions have ruled in favour of the land holders and not the bureaucracy. The High Court has held that without the consent of the Person in Possession, “meaning land owner, persons renting, signed written permission” the common law does not entitle anyone to go onto another person’s land. Thank heavens we still have judges, barristers and queen’s council who represent people, common law and their constitutional rights. Under common law, we have the right to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness, the right to own private land or property, the right to freedom from cruel or unjust arrest, search, seizure, detention, fines or imprisonment without conviction or excess bail. “Trespass is illegal”. If the council inspector asks to enter your property, you say, “not without a search warrant”. The laws that prohibit trespass are more powerful than the petty laws that say they can. Constitutional recognition of shire councils was denied by the Australian voters in the 1974 and 1988 referendums. This is the very reason the bureaucracy does not want the people to know or test how frail their laws are. This has been clearly illustrated in several High Court decisions: Ref. Gorge v Lockett, Plenty v Dillon and Halliday v Nevill. Council inspectors must have the land owner or person renting the property signed, written per-

mission before they can legally enter a property. If they enter your property without your signed, written permission call the police and charge them with trespass. If forcible entry is attempted, charge them with a breach of home invasion S70 (forcible entry), S75 (threatening violence), S92 (abuse of office) of the Criminal Code Act Queensland 1899. The Police Client Service Charter states the following in part: Quote, The Service- “Our mission is to serve the people of Queensland by protecting life and property, preserving peace and safety, preventing crime and upholding the law in a manner which has regard for the ‘public good’ and the ‘rights of the individuals’ “. Further, there is nothing in the client service charter which allows any police to be used for intimidatory purposes. The obvious question which needs to be answered is “who is at fault?” if so much so-called “illegal building” was allowed to go on. The local government or the land owners? In circulation amongst local land owners etc., there are two notices. The “Notice Without Prejudice” was issued to me by a former Queensland Senator involved with Property Rights. The second notice was posted in a rural edition of the Senate Sentinel and the use of this notice concerning trespass was recommended for use by a queen’s council. It would be advisable for land owners and people renting to obtain copies of these notices. “Notice Without Prejudice” -

COULD someone out there please enlighten me as to how exactly the new blue ice monster in Charlotte Street fits Council’s current “street-scape” policy? Diana Burns, Cooktown.

FROM Mayor Peter Scott’s repeated recent statements to the paper, he is obviously very much in favour of water fluoridation. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but is it fair when he can decide on what is added to water in an attempt to medicate me and other Cooktown residents? Fluoride is the only chemical added to drinking water to try and have a therapeutic effect on people. Surely individuals should decide on their own medications?

Why should the Mayor and six councillors dictate a medication through our drinking water? Anyone who wants fluoride already has it in every tube of fluoride toothpaste. It is also a very big concern to me that a very senior council officer posted Pro-fluoride messages in the Pro-fluoride Cooktown Facebook page before it was suddenly closed down. Can we expect his fluoridation report to Council to now be unbiased? I would really like to know why fluoridation was forced on

Cooktown residents well over two years earlier than the Bligh government had dictated. Why was our Council in such a rush? If Cook councillors hadn’t deliberately rushed, then, like Mount Isa, we may never have been fluoridated. Mount Isa councillors recently voted unanimously to scrap their fluoridation project. Cairns Council ended forced fluoridation in January, why is our council still even doing this practice? It would be very easy and

inexpensive to just turn off the fluoride. A lot of people are over the fluoride debate, just turn off the fluoride tap - end of story. Kim Fowler, Cooktown.

Complete this notice and serve it on the Cook Shire Council. After the notice has been officially received, i.e. stamped received and initialled, obtain a copy for your files. In some areas you can lodge a second copy at the police station. However, the Cooktown Police Station advised me that as they do not have the facilities for filing, it is advisable to file the copy at home. The second notice, “Entities entering this property” is served on the individuals entering on to your property. Details are clearly written on each notice. Both notices require a Justice of the Peace to witness your signature. Keep several copies on hand for future use. Don’t let the bureaucracy treat you like a mob of retarded hillbillies while they destroy our rights. I hope this information will assist those that have been stressed by this Shire Council’s action.  letters to the editor IT’S all very well for the council to take a half-page advertisement in the local paper (paid for by ratepayers) to tell everyone what the people using the “council rest area” think about it. But what about asking the town residents and ratepayers and the paying tourists what they think about the “council rest area”. Of course if you ask people who have stayed in the middle of town for $5 if they think the rest area is good they are going to say yes! I am the owner of the park immediately next to this “rest area “ and since no one from the council has thought to ask me, let me tell you what tourists paying to stay in my park think about it: “This free camp pollutes the environment. I have seen people emptying their waste buckets in the bushes and using the bush land as a toilet.” “Rest area is not policed, it is in the centre of town and degrades the township and

surrounding area.” “I believe it is outrageous that council allows caravans to park free outside a caravan park and I feel less safe because I see strange faces in the bathroom and laundry and clearly they are using the facilities that the park residents have paid for.” “Dump point at the back of the caravan park is noisy and smelly with vehicles coming and going to empty waste.”. These are just a few of the comments I have been getting from people staying in my park. Added to these comments are my own, which include the fact that when I walk my dogs down along the grassy area beside Adelaide Street, I don’t want to have to walk through a corridor of vans and feel as though all the open space, which should be available to everyone, has gone. I also agree with the comments that the area

is not properly policed, we have had a swag and several combi vans over the last week and many caravans that have no provision for waste water. The preferred place for people to stop is as near as possible to my park fence even, though a sign directs them not to park in this area. There is a sign which points out they are not to park near my fence, but people continue to park along my fence - that should be monitored and enforced. This is not a free camp as it is constantly being called. It may be free (or very low cost) to the people who stop there, but it is certainly not free to the ratepayers of Cooktown. It costs them in monetary terms and it costs them in terms of what the town looks like with vehicles strung out through their town parked along the side of Adelaide Street in full view with their washing hanging out

and their tables and chairs spread along the town’s open spaces. Just in rubbish removal alone, the ratepayers are looking at funding the removal of five bins a day. At $13.67 a bin, that is about $68 per day. The rubbish truck comes round every day. Is it costing ratepayers $68 a day, seven days a week for rubbish? Water is free to people stopping here, and no charge is made for sewerage - unlike the Cooktown ratepayers who pay for every service, whether they want it or not and pay for these services to be provided to people using the council rest area. Why is this council “rest area” in the middle of town? All other towns that provide free camping do so on the outskirts of a town. There are businesses in town who believe their takings have increased because of this rest area in town.

Well, the free camping is not overflow it is at the expense of the caravan parks so they are not necessarily extra people. Maybe these businesses would like to think about reducing their prices so that people have more money available to pay to stop at a van park? Or think about how they would feel if the council, who don’t need to do proper costings, let alone make a profit, set up a fishing tour at the boat ramp for a fraction of what they charge, or set up a cafe in the middle of town charging 50c for a coffee? So, if you don’t want this free camping in the middle of town to continue, make your views known otherwise next year. We will find - surprise surprise - that the council considers this to be a huge success and we will have many more vehicles next year with more pollution, expense and loss of the open

space in town.

Thinking outside the hip pocket on the environment YOUR article last week about the Queensland Parks and Wildlife doing their socalled controlled burn to stop wild fires needs responding to. When was the last wildfire in this area? When and if this occurred, what was the cost of damage, not counting man made structures? Has there ever been a costing done on the environmental damage done to the nature and landscape in this area? Has there ever been a study done on the increase of water runoff after rain from this area? Has there ever been a study done on the damage to the microbiological structure of the soil in this area? What was the soil structure and water runoff (or water retention) like before man took it upon himself to start this practice?

I don’t really know what happens, but as soon as it stops raining up here and the grass dries out, people want to start burning everything. Who authorises this? Do the local inhabitants have any say in this? I won’t talk about the wildlife, this is pretty obvious by the birds of prey having a picnic as the animals try to escape. My main concern is the fact that we are the driest continent and we seem to be hell bent on doing what ever we can to make it even dryer. I was told by a local, who sounded like he knew what he was talking about, that when Capt. Cook was here, he measured the depth of the Endeavour River. One hundred years later, this was checked and it was much the same. Look at it now! Every time it rains the river is dirt red! The only

major change that I can see is the introduction of man and his search for money without any concerns for the environment. What I am getting at in this whinge, is that when you burn the countryside, the heat from the fire and then the exposure to our hot sun kills of all microbiological activity in the soil which is totally destructive. If the dried grass is left there, it is a natural mulch, which will break down and help enrich the soil; plus it also stops the rain from running off. When you leave soil barren, nature will automatically make weeds grow there to protect the soil. Man has created all of our environmental problems and only Man can fix them. Just because destructive practices were done in the past, doesn’t mean we have

Bloomfield’s Big Day Out is on Saturday

B L O O M F I E L D ’s B i g Day Out, its annual Agricultural Show, is on this Saturday. And one of last year’s mostpopular events is on again. Yes, the Ted Simms Crosscut Saw Competition, sponsored by the Simms Family and offering a $200 cash prize to each of the men’s and women’s winning teams. Named after Ted, a timber getter who operated a timber mill in the Bloomfield Valley, this year’s event will celebrate his 100th birthday. Those intending to compete have until 11.30am on the day to register. The action starts at 12.30pm. Now in its fifth year, the Show will kick off at 10am with the markets and the Show displays open to the public from then. The Bloomfield Memorial Association who organises and runs this event has purchased a small jumping castle which is sure to keep the little guys entertained along with the decorated mask parade. With a variety of stalls and several food options, there should be something for all the family. If you’ve never been to Bloomfield, or just haven’t been down that way for a while, take the drive out and join the crew at the Bloomfield Community Hall. Look for the signs to guide you.

If people want to protect there buildings, then let them do their controlled burn around their buildings but leave the rest alone. I have to stop, it would be good to get some feedback from this, but please make sure that your comments are in the best interest of the environment and not your hip pocket. Hydro plant tender named

Katrina at home in Hillcrest’s garden.

The busy life and times of Katrina By ERIC GEORGE ONE of Cooktown’s business women, Katrina Wright, recently invited me to her Hillcrest Guest House for a chat. It was a glorious Cooktown day so we sat outside in The Aviary, a large covered area that Katrina has recently installed. I started by asking if she is a local girl. “Local for nearly 28 years. My original home is Melbourne.” Why would Katrina leave the wonderful weather of Melbourne to come up here? “I think that’s fairly obvious! But it wasn’t just the weather, it was the family business. “I’m from a large family and we are all used to working hard.” Doesn’t Katrina think that working hard is taking an unfair advantage over the rest of us in Cooktown? Katrina laughs and says: “Oh no. I like to keep busy. We’ve always kept busy. “When I left school I just wanted to get out there in the world, earn money and be self-sufficient. I’ve always worked in admin - always been an office worker. Until I came to Cooktown and was a bank teller here. “I went to a business college, put myself through that, a short course on typing, etiquette, that sort of thing.” There cannot be many specialists in etiquette around Cooktown. “No, I can’t imagine there are!” Katrina arrived in Cooktown when she was twenty-eight, married with two children. “I met Ray when I was 16, and he was 18. When we married we took off around Australia for five years. “He worked, I had children. We went back to Melbourne but we couldn’t settle. “We’d seen so many places, so his parents found a business to buy up here and asked would we like to come and work in it as well. “That was Cape York Tyres. At the time located in the bakery. After that, we bought the current site, so it was a service station and tyres. We built the mechanical workshop in 2000.” Katrina and Ray built up the business. Was that a challenge? “A big challenge. A lot of staff, a lot of hard work, long hours especially for Ray. He was doing a lot himself, all the RACQ work, 24 hours a day.”

Katrina inevitably ended up managing many employees, so I asked her if there is a difference between managing Cooktown men and Cooktown women. She laughs at the question and says, “Yes. You don’t tend to manage Cooktown men, because it is the women who work! “All the mechanics we have employed have come from outside Cooktown. “All staff have their own little intricacies. “They all have different things that you need to manage, and you have to treat each one of them accordingly. “You do need to master picking what they are good at, giving them the right jobs according to their experiences. “There’s a lot more to management that just saying ‘Here, go and do that.’ There’s a lot of psychology attached to it.” I guessed that Katrina did not learn these skills from her college course. “No, not at all. That’s life experience. Just learning along the way.” Is it something that should, or even can, be taught in college? “We did do business courses along the way, courses offered by Small Business Queensland. Also industry training, so we were training but learning management is largely a day to day thing.” People assume that you are either born with management ability or not. Is that true? “Definitely. You have to be suited to it. Skills are something you have to learn, you cannot be born with a skill. You can be born with a particular nature, to be able to adapt, but skills have to be learned. A lot of people go into small business thinking, yes, I own a business and I can dictate the terms of that business. “That isn’t the way small business works. You are run by your customers. What your customers require is what you have to deliver, and to deliver it you have to work hard. “Running a business is hard; it’s not just a piece of cake.” Katrina and Ray built up Cape York Tyres into a hub for motor vehicle needs, and then sold it. Why? “Because we had been in that business for twenty-five years, and it was time

for Ray to retire.” Katrina is now the successful manager of the Hillcrest guest house. When she took the decision to buy the business, did she have a plan to build it up? “I did. We originally bought it to house mechanics, and it has only been the last two years that it has been back open to the public.” Had she had any previous experience of managing hospitality? “No, not really. It’s very interesting. Nothing surprised me about it. “The only difference to what I expected is how well it has been received by customers. We’re becoming quite popular.” Currently, Cooktown is thinking hard about how it can increase tourist business. One focus has been increasing public ideas of the length of the season. “It has lengthened. When I first came to Cooktown the tourist season would have been June to perhaps October. “Now it’s more like March to December. The wet season is just as beautiful as the dry season, and the fishing is better. You don’t get as much wind.” What is Katrina’s strategy for increasing business? “I want to focus on this function area. We plan on having weddings. I have had a Chamber of Commerce meeting. “Special parties, business functions. There a lot of business groups come to town. I can cater, accommodate and hold the conference. It’s a package. “There are many things to do in Cooktown and that’s an area I will concentrate on for next year. I’m going to be putting together packages for people. “Come to Cooktown, stay at the Hillcrest and we’ll put together golf packages, fishing packages. So people don’t think there is nothing to do in Cooktown. “People are becoming aware that there more things to do here, things to see. More people see the benefits of exercise, and we have such fantastic weather - why not take advantage of being able to get out on your bike, or walk, or ride?”

THE Annan River Hydro Power Scheme will soon get underway with the recent announcement of $150,000 in funding received from the Queensland Government under its Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program. With an initial assessment, the total project cost will be around $375,000. A Cook Shire Council spokeswoman said the project is a cost-saving and green energy initiative that will deliver an estimated overall saving to Council of between $40,000 and $60,000 per annum - effectively reducing the carbon footprint of the plant by 365 tons of carbon dioxide annually. At its ordinary monthly meeting held last week, Council resolved to

For example, Tony is introducing a paid parental leave scheme that guarantees mothers six months paid leave. So if you have a secure, wellpaid job with a salary, you might get $75,000 for your baby. On the other hand, if you are normal for up here and struggle along doing three casual jobs to make ends meet, you are probably better off going onto Centrelink. Countdown to

THIS year’s Wallaby Creek Festival focus is on reducing the amount of Wallaby waste generated. Creek My dream is to co-create a better Festival planet through teaching Upcycling (recycling) and waste awareness, by being the best practice example of an environmentally low-impact event for under 3000 people. Our three-day music festival in the pristine rainforest challenges us to rethink all aspects of event operations and logistics to keep the rainforest and creeks clean and clear and to teach others to do the same thing. You can vote for my dream here: http:// sunsuperdreams.com.au/dream/view/upcycle-separateco-create-wallabycreekfestival and help the festival win some funding. Leading by example is the best way to teach someone new tricks and values, so in a fun and friendly atmosphere we are putting forward some new ideas. Our plan is to encourage festival patrons to take on sorting of their rubbish and understand responsibility of purchase. Front-end recycling, where you learn as you use the volunteer-manned recycling depot in the festival, means you take this knowledge home with you. Your friends watch you do it and more people are co-creating better environments on our planet. So using a better understanding of human habits we are initiating a ‘traffic light’ approach to waste management, red meaning rubbish, yellow recyclables and green is compost and cardboard. Another area where our location challenges us is in the area of hospitality. Meals for our volunteers, showers and toilets for everyone are areas that need careful planning. Bio-degradable glasses, cups, plates and cutlery are used for the meals before and after the festival and for the festival crew cafe and bar. These are purchased from Enviromart in Cairns at a higher cost than plastic table ware, but are worth it as they are truly environmental - created from corn-starch and bamboo. Similarly, recycled cardboard and paper plates are used as they compost and don’t add to landfill. Festival-goers use bush style toilets, where you add sawdust and lime to break down the waste quickly and without too much smell. This method of composting human waste is ages old and has been used in many festivals to date, utilising wheelie bins as well as long-drop toilets. The bush showers in the camp ground have cold water and are best used during the day while it is warm. Lots of people are swimming in the dams and Wallaby Creek so this helps to reduce the need for the bush showers. Please don’t use soap or shampoo in the creek or dams. Open fires are allowed at the festival, just plan yours so it’s not on a roadway or too close to your tent. Of course the biggest and best thing about the festival is the music that I, as Bands Co-ordinator have programed for you, with artists of all types and music of all genres. Make sure you check out the website for the music line-up: www.wallabycreekfestival.org.au Locals who show their licence can buy their ticket at a discount rate thanks to Everything Electrical in Cooktown and Nerida Carr at Wujal Wujal Council. Visitors can buy their ticket through TicketLink or at the festival gate.

A clean slate THERE are some big words around. Even the Bible uses them. Like “justification”. It is like as if I have never done From the Pulpit any wrong. A record of my wrongs now longer exists. Psalm 103:12 reads, “He (the Lord) has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.” Micah 7:19 reads, “You will throw away all our sins into the deepest part of the sea.” Hebrews 8:12 reads, “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.” So what is justification? T he best example to enable us to understand this major teaching from the Bible comes from the following story. . . An Englishman put his Rolls-Royce on a cross-Channel ferry to go on a holiday. While he was driving around Europe, the car broke down. He contacted the Rolls-Royce people in England saying, “I’m having trouble with my car; what should I do?” The Rolls-Royce people flew a mechanic over! He repaired the car and returned to England leaving the man to continue his holiday. As you can imagine, the fellow was wondering, “How much is this going to cost me?” When he returned to England, he wrote to the Rolls Royce people and asked how much he owed them. He received this reply “Dear Sir, There is no record anywhere in our files that anything ever went wrong with a Rolls-Royce.” That is justification! Jesus took our sins and paid for them on the cross. As we acknowledge this and turn from our sins reaching out by faith to receive the gift of salvation being offered by God’s amazing grace, we become being justified in God’s sight. (read Romans 5:1). There is nothing to make us ashamed as we stand before Our Father in Heaven. Blessings. Pastor Peter Coates Cooktown Baptist Church.

Three news stories from 100 years ago AFTER a couple of weeks break, we are back again with more stories from 1913. It would seem that after the show and celebrations, life in Cooktown was rather non-eventful, so this week we are bringing you three stories which appeared in the Cairns Post in August 1913. The first appeared on Friday, August 1, 1913, when it would seem there was some animosity between rival Tin Mining Companies. A Cooktown case: “At the Cooktown Warden’s Court, before Warden Power, the Annan Tin Mining Co. made an application against the New Queensland Tin Mining Co. for cancellation of a water right. Mr Patching appeared for the plaintiffs, and Mr A. J. P. MacDonnell (Messrs. MacDonnell and Hannam) for the defendants. Mr MacDonnell took the objection that, ‘there was no jurisdiction to entertain the application by the plaintiff company, they having no right to the water themselves, and it being a matter solely between the Crown and their licensee, the New Queensland Co.’ The application was thrown out with costs.” The next story appeared on Saturday, August 23 1913 and sounds like one of those fishing stories that would have been retold many times. An honest fish: “On Tuesday last, says the ‘Cooktown Independent’, we were shown a small Southern-Star gold wire cross, about three-quarters of an inch long and half an inch broad. The trinket was found in the stomach of a black bream, caught at the wharf, by Master H. Gould. Two days later, Mr E. A. Young called at our office and showed us a gold bird pin, to which had been attached, by a fine gold chain, the cross found in the fish’s stomach. It appears that Mrs Young, a little over three weeks ago, was at the Annan River, and when leaning over the bridge, the chain attaching the pin and cross broke, when the latter fell into the river. There is nothing very strange in a fish swallowing anything that comes in its way, but this is the first time we have heard of a fish swallowing the Southern Cross, and then travelling about ten miles to give it back to its owner. The occurrence, however, is a fact, and we do not want the casual reader to exclaim: ‘Another snake yarn.’” Lastly, the story of a lost man which was reported on Friday, September 12. The lost found: “Advice received from Cooktown on Friday, stated that Mr A. Griffiths, who was reported as lost from Mount Romeo, turned up safely at Harvest Home Station. He left Mount Romeo on Sunday morning, 31st ultimo, intending to go pig shooting and to return at noon the same day. In traversing Mount Misery Scrub, which is very thickly timbered and has no tracks, he became bushed, and wandered about until Wednesday morning, 3rd inst, when he got clear of the scrub. Seeing cattle, he made his way to Harvest Home Station, which he reached the same evening. The distance from Mount Romeo to Harvest Home is 34 miles, but it is impossible to say how many miles Mr Griffiths travelled in his wandering.”

FEDERAL ELECTION – September 7, 2013

Turtles and dugongs protection already underway: Gordon LABOR candidate for Leichhardt Billy Gordon has accused Tony Abbott and Warren Entsch of hypocrisy and cultural insensitivity following the release of his so-called Dugong and Turtle Protection Plan which ignores the many years of work of the traditional owner groups in North Queensland. “Tony Abbott has totally ignored years of work undertaken by traditional owners and indigenous

organisations in Torres Strait and Cape York to protect turtles and dugongs and ensure sustainable harvesting,” Mr Gordon said. “At the last election Warren Entsch pledged in his campaign material to ‘Protect native title rights of traditional hunters and support indigenous designed policies for sustainability’.” Mr Gordon accused Abbott and Entsch of hollow promises by dismissing the work Turtle and Du-

gong Taskforce and the Queensland Indigenous Sea Country Strategic Policy Group. “Failure of the Coalition to consult Indigenous people and acknowledge their work in protecting our marine life prior to releasing its Coalition Protection Plan clearly contradicts its claim to engage in a meaningful way with Indigenous communities and is an insult to traditional owners.” Mr Gordon, who himself

managed the Turtle and Dugong Conservation program in 2007, said that the Federal Government provided funding for a new Indigenous Community Partnership just last year for the very same measures announced by the Coalition. “Federal funding has been used to employ Indigenous rangers and implement the Cape York Sea Country strategy to support sustainable harvesting regimes and develop community compliance and enforcement mechanisms to stamp out illegal poaching.” The Federal Labor Government is already investing $6.95 million in Indigenous self-management because this is the best way to ensure the sustainable and appropriate management of dugongs and turtles. This includes leadership and advice on

the take of marine turtle and dugong, developing community based sea country management plans and supporting involvement by the traditional owners in the sustainable use of marine resources and compliance training. “A number of communities have already taken the lead on sustainable hunting practices and have developed Community Management Plans. “They see protection of dugong as a priority and are actively engaged in policing their own communities. “Unlike Mr Abbott and Mr Entsch, our Labor Government works in partnership with Indigenous communities to stamp out poaching. We recognise the need for Indigenous Australians to take the leadership role in a bottom up approach

if our dugongs and turtles are to be protected and native title rights recognised.” Mr Gordon said that traditional owners were well aware of the need for tougher legislation to support sustainable harvesting and stamp out poaching. “The Turtle and Dugong Taskforce is finalising a new legal framework to better achieve this goal but their work has been swept aside by the Coalition in favour of its heavy handed approach of involving the Australian Crime Commission to solve this problem.” Mr Gordon said that unlike the Coalition, a Labor Government will continue to work in partnership with Indigenous people. “If elected I will be a strong voice for indigenous people in the Far North on this and other issues.”

Cooktown unployment rate disgraceful, says Entsch

LEICHHARDT MP Warren Entsch has labelled the skyrocketing youth unemployment rate in Cooktown a “disgrace” after figures revealed the youth jobless rate had tripled to a staggering 28.4 per cent in the North. “The jobless rate among 20 to 24-year-olds has doubled since Kevin Rudd came into power in 2007,” he said. “Our region now has some of the highest youth unemployment in Queensland. “It is absolutely unacceptable that one in four of our young people are currently out of work. “This is a direct result of the Labor Government’s inability to support small businesses and business growth - getting in their way instead of helping them. “To add insult to injury, Rudd slashed $242 million in trainee and apprentice subsidies, so there is even less incentive for employers to take on a younger, unskilled worker.” “The Coalition has committed to scrapping red and green tape, reducing unnecessary regulation and increasing productivity. “Last week we committed to a $1.5 billion tax cut for businesses. In another policy announcement, Mr Entsch said the Coalition’s newlyannounced health policy will help get more - and better-trained - medical experts into rural and regional areas like Weipa and the Torres Strait.

“We need more frontline services in Leichhardt, from highly skilled doctors, to nurses and allied health professionals,” said Mr Entsch. “This is a significant issue, and one that will certainly be helped by our plan to provide financial assistance to students from rural and remote areas to further their studies.” Mr Entsch said it was good to see a focus on greater community involvement in the management and responsibility of local hospitals, and he welcomed the plan to bring forward the proposed roll-out of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. .”We’re committed to rebuilding general practice and assisting them to expand their practices and provide space for teaching medical students. “The Coalition will commit $52.5 million to provide at least 175 grants of up to $300,000 targeted to rural and regional areas.” Mr Entsch said the Coalition’s $42 million commitment to support the expansion of James Cook University’s (JCU) renowned Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM), also announced last week, was also a big win for Western Cape communities. The Coalition has strongly identified tropical health and medical research as an enormous opportunity for Northern Australia, underpinned by the impressive work to date by institutions like JCU.

Greens launch dental plan GREENS lead Senate candidate Adam Stone and candidate for Leichhardt Johanna Kloot have launched the Greens fully-costed plan to make it easier for every Australian to see a dentist. “The Greens already delivered a down payment on Denticare and now we want to finish the job,” said Mr Stone. “Oral health is important for overall health but unfortunately one in three Australians say they can’t afford to see the dentist. The Greens believe that your health shouldn’t be determined by your bank balance so we made dental reform a priority in this term of parliament.” Greens Leichhardt candidate Johanna Kloot said she was proud that the party had secured an investment of more than $4 billion and from next year 3.4 million children will be able to access dental treatment through Medicare. “Thanks to the Greens, 15.745 families in Leichhardt will be able to take their children to the dentist as easily as they take them to the GP,” she said. “The Greens see this investment as a solid down payment but we won’t stop until everyone has access to high-quality dental care. We have a fully-costed plan to make Medicare funded dentistry available to all Australians, beginning with those who need it most. “Once upon a time the Labor party also cared about universal healthcare. KAP calls for a Navy Base in Cairns KAP candidate for Leichhardt George Ryan has called for increased Naval precense in the Cairns region. “Since the Rudd government placed the Asylum seeker processing facility in Port Moresby, it has put the Torres Strait, Cairns and the whole of Far North Queensland on the front line” said Mr Ryan. Mr Ryan warned that parts of the north were unprotected. “At no time in recent history has the need for better surveillance of our northern waters been more apparent. Australia’s north is open to anyone who wants to get on a boat and risk coming into our waters, not only asylum seekers, but illegal fishermen,” Mr Ryan said. Mr Ryan said he remains focused on creating real solutions to real problems and that Kevin Rudd’s announcement to increase the Naval Base at Townsville

did not make sense. “Cairns is exactly where this base should be built. Our waters are being infiltrated by illegal fisherman, illegal refugees and diseases like TB and drugs are entering our country by our remote far northern areas. “Border Security is a real issue but so is this region’s economy. Defence Force jobs create employment opportuntities, and Cairns needs to diversify and strengthen” said Mr Ryan. KAP policy outlines that 100 Patrol Class Naval Boats with multifunctional capacity should be deployed into North Queensland. Crews would be situated in the Cairns region, and the vessels would be equiped with multi-functional capabilities to deal with customs, border security and biosecurity issues as well as fishing infringements.

FEDERAL ELECTION – September 7, 2013

Who’s Who in Leichhardt: Entsch favourite By MARK BOUSEN

SITTING member Warren Entsch (LNP) is at very short odds to retain the seat of Leichhardt he regained in 2010 for the September 7 election. Latest odds quote Mr Entsch at paying a $1.10 for a $1 investment, effectively odds of 1-10on. Labor’s Billy Gordon is quoted at $6 with the remainder at $20 and over. Mr Entsch opened betting at about $1.15 to $1.18, with Mr Gordon at $4, but the sitting member’s odd have firmed considerably to his current quote.

Mr Entsch who held the seat from 1996 to 2007 when he “retired” only to see Labor’s Jim Turnour take the seat with a swing of 14.3 per cent on the back of Kevin Rudd being swept into power. It was one of the biggest swings in the country. Mr Turnour was quoted at $7 prior to the election to defeat the LNP’s short-priced favourite Charlie McKillop. Mr Entsch returned for the 2010 poll at the begging of LNP power brokers and reclaimed his seat from Mr Turnour with a swing of almost nine per cent and now holds the seat with a majority of 4.6 per cent. While such a percentage regards the seat

of being marginal, it’s far from the fact and should be regarded as a safe LNP seat. However, as Mr Turnour proved upsets are possible. Mr Entsch, who is the Opposition Whip in the last parliament, is expected to be made a senior minister should the LNP be elected to government as current polls predict. The seat has generally been regarded as a bell-weather seat, meaning the sitting member is part of the Government. That held essentially true until the last election in 2010 when the Gillard government was returned, but Leichhardt member sat on the Opposition benches.

FACT FILE Compiled from the resources of the AEC, ABC and Regional and Remote Newspapers THE SEAT LNP holds the seat with 4.6% SITTING MEMBER Warren Entsch (LNP) has held the seat since 2010, returning to parliament after having represented this seat from 1996 until 2007. Entsch’s departure in 2007 was due to a temporary retirement from politics. BOUNDARIES Over 80% of the population of Leichhardt lives in the Cairns metropolitan area, most of which lies within the boundaries of Leichhardt. The area of the electorate extends north from Cairns along the ‘Marlin Coast’ between the Atherton Tablelands and the sea to Mossman, before spreading out to include Cape York north of the Mitchell River and all of the Torres Strait islands. Covers 148,988 sq km, an area more than twice the size of Tasmania. HISTORY Leichhardt was created when the parliament was expanded in 1949. It is named after German born explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who disappeared while attempting to cross the continent in 1848. (in ballot paper order) US President Bill Clinton. Entsch was liked by his own party for his knock-about working class background, just the appeal needed to keep the ‘battlers’ on-side. Entsch retired at the 2007 election but returned to win his seat back at the 2010 election and has held the position of Chief Opposition Whip since the 2010 election, a complicated job in a finely divided House.

BILLY GORDON ALP Gordon grew up in Innisfail and throughout the Far North as his family followed the job of his railway worker father. He has cut sugarcane and done stints on banana farms, worked in construction, and been a Barman at the Purple Pub in Normanto Gordon spent a number of years working with TAFE throughout North Queensland, supporting students throughout the Torres Strait, Cape York and Cairns. He has also been an Army Reservist with the far north’s 51st Battalion, and worked for the Foundation for Young Australians as a Co-Coordinator of youth leadership programs. Gordon has also worked for Reconciliation Australia as the organisation’s Education Officer and most recently worked as Community Development Manager with Skytrans, a position that has given him a good understanding of Cairns and Cape York issues and needs.

Stars

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) You can expect a very pleasant surprise later on this week. Be prepared for anything! You may be unsure of how to react. Romance. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Contrary to your thoughts, other people might be much less concerned about your problems than you would assume.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Don’t be too modest about your recent undertakings. You have worked diligently to accomplish what you have. Accept praise gracefully. Romance. You may be thinking about some money which you hope to inherit. You might not be aware that your partner is also hoping to benefit.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

FOR KIDS

A disappointing turn of events should not make you lose heart. These lows in life will help you create character and will strengthen your will. Romance. This is a very good week for romance, provided you plan every detail. If you want a magical evening to occur, you need to make it happen.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) You may be surprised at all the attention you get this week. This would be an excellent time for getting your thoughts across to other people. Romance. Both Venus and Mars are in good aspect at the moment. Now is the time to be truthful about anything you’ve been keeping secret.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) You could easily be put off mid-week. Don’t be too quick to judge the situation. You need to remain level-headed about any revelations. Romance. The confident mood you have been exuding will leave your partner in awe. Remarkably, they will not be the only one who notices.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

FINDWORD No. 163 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

You will be feeling full of energy at the moment and possibly a little restless. It is very important that you find a new outlet for your energy. Romance. Don’t get too absorbed in a new relationship. Be careful because you may be falling into old routines which aren’t in your best interest.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)

Your flexible lifestyle has boded well for you in the past. However, it might not be what you need in the future. You won’t regret adding some stability to your life. Romance. Your partner has been putting you first for a long time. Reflect on where it is that you place them in your own life.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

Be aware your shortcomings. You can always improve upon things that you are aware of. Make conscious efforts to change the things you aren’t happy with. Romance. Your partner will be more demanding of you time than you can give to them. Reassure them you are doing your best.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Although you need plenty of security, there’s a danger that you could get stuck in a rut. Find a balance because allowing for change doesn’t have to translate to insecurity. Romance. You may manage to come to a compromise that pleases both parties. Once decided, don’t change a thing.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st) Time spent with a group of friends will renew your spirit. You will be put back in touch with your old self. Look for things in your life that are keeping you from your true spirit. Romance. Your love-life will get an important boost this week. Make sure that you maintain the momentum.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.

– Babe Ruth

SOLUTIONS No. 163

You will find it difficult to show your colleagues how you are feeling at the moment. This isn’t a bad thing as you don’t need to put your personal life on display. Romance. You might prefer it if your partner could be a little more flexible at times. Try to see things from their point of view.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Don’t worry about an event this week which you cannot control. There is a more important decision to be made which you can do something about. Romance. An exciting dream may be less of a fantasy than you imagine. If you are patient, the dream might become a reality in the near future.

Another Hope Vale man was sentenced to a term of imprisonment, but he will not serve any jail time. The 37-year-old was sentenced to three months imprisonment upon being convicted of breaching a

The Daintree, if not Paradise, is at least a Garden of Eden. It was confirmed last week by Graham Burt and an Auckland Crew needing a Garden of Eden for a Christianity film segment about Adam, Eve, Satan and the fall from grace. The film crew fell on their feet here. They had shot segments at Rwanda, Thailand and Israel, but were forced to cancel their

Exercise and Physical Activity Continuing on from last week’s introduction to exercise and physical activity: Exercise is a type of physical activity defined as planned, structured and repetitive body movement done to improve or maintain fitness. Sufficient Physical Activity is participation in enough physical activity to confer a health benefit. At least 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week is recommended. Incidental Physical Activity

includes physical activity done at work and at home as part of normal day-to-day life. Moderate-Intensity Activity causes a slight but noticeable increase in your breathing and heart rate. For example, walking briskly at a pace where you are able to comfortably talk but not sing. Other examples include mowing the lawn, medium-paced swimming or cycling, or doubles tennis. Vigorous Activity makes you huff and puff, so talking in full sentences between breaths is difficult. Vigorous activities include jogging,

aerobics or fast cycling, and sports like football, squash and netball. Most people are surprised to learn just how much physical activity is needed to burn off that extra fuel, particularly high fat food and sugary drinks. The accompanying table below shows the amount of activity required for an adult male to burn off the energy contained in selected food and drinks. Australia’s physical activity recommendations for 12 - 18 year olds: • At least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every

day. • Should not spend more than two hours a day surfing the Internet, watching TV or playing video games. Australia’s physical activity recommendation for 5 - 12 year olds. • At least 60 minutes (and up to several hours) of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. • Children should not spend more than two hours a day using electronic media for entertainment (e.g. computer games, internet, TV), particularly during daylight hours.

Mick’s Medal bubble burst

Fighting Heroes refuse to lie down In the Bunker

WELCOME to our 60th member for the new financial year, Logan Idiens. Logan comes to us from the Sunshine Coast and owns Laguna Constructions, who are doing a fair bit of building work up here in Cooktown. Welcome Logan, I’m sure you will enjoy our little piece of paradise. A small field competed in last week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition with Wayne King taking out the honours with a nett score of 60. Graham Burton was next in line for the runner-up place with a nett 62. Apart from one score turned in, all nett scores were in the low to mid 60s, which is pretty good playing from our members. A great field of members turned out to compete in the Cooktown Hardware and Italian Restaurant Monthly Medal competition last Saturday. Mick Mason was getting excited and stuck around for the final group to come in as he was leading the men’s division, but his bubble was burst at the last minute by Robyn McDonald, who finished the day’s game with a nett score of 60. Mick’s nett score for runner-up place was 63 (just pipping Peter Shields who had a nett 64). Of the two ladies who came out to contest the Medal, Julie Sauer was the ladies’ winner with a nett score of 71, with Carol McKinna the runner-up with 80. All the nearest-the-pins were taken out, with Wayne King landing both 2/11 and 14 and John Pettersen taking out 9/18. Our lowest gross score for the day was Peter Shields’, who managed to hit 79 off the stick. Congratulations everyone. We now have a second hand fridge, which we will be using for the new soft drink machine. However, we are just waiting for Pete Russell to make a fancy locked coin safe. Hopefully this will be the week that Pete finishes the job. This Saturday’s competition is sponsored by All About Scales and the prize up for grabs for the winner is a 30kg electric hanging scale - great for weighing those monster catches out on the reef. The competition is a No Woods (Hybrids OK) Stableford/Putt competition. Ladies will be playing off the red tees and men off the white. Happy golfing everyone. Kelly Barnett Manager Cooktown Golf Links.

Black Mountain Panther bowler Wulbar Kulka shows his style against the Hope Vale Heroes.

Missed opportunity while whip ‘Cracklin’ CRACKLIN was the host for this week’s run, and she promised that it was “long”. She started us off on a shredded paper trail, meaning to leave us to find the false trails ourselves. Of course, that did not work. She just could not resist telling us where to go and generally ordering everyone about whenever a false trail was about to happen. The real trail led us up Racecourse Road and on towards Cairns. Somewhere along the way, it dived into the bush and fought its way up a precipice to emerge at the top of Buhmann Street. \There is a beautiful view from up there, and it is just the place for a drink stop - as we all pointed out to Cracklin who had missed the opportunity to provide one. The trail continued downhill and eventually home via the racecourse, the sewerage works, the cemetery and the Telstra tower. By now it was late, and the true Hashers were fumbling around in the dark. They got home to find the SCBs were already on their second beers. Cracklin took the floor to explain the 60s she is arranging on September 7,

GM Thermo had very little to celebrate this week. Fighting Heroes refuse to lie down in cricket

Chat with Matt G’day again, With just two rounds of the regular season left, we finally find ourselves in the final eight at the right of end of the season. Although we share that spot on the ladder with the Titans, Panthers, Warriors and Raiders on competition points, we are well clear of them on the basis of percentage, which is calculated on points for and against. Ours is plus 35, while the Titans’ percentage is minus 25, the Panthers’ minus 29, the Warriors’ minus 84 and the Raiders’ 136. But the season’s not over and we still believe we have to win our last games against the Sharkies on Sunday and the Wests Tigers next weekend to be sure of a spot. If we do that, we should be there for the finals, because you’d have to forecast a minor miracle for those other four teams to leapfrog us. In this upcoming fortnight, the Titans face the Roosters and the Storm, the Panthers face the Bulldogs and Sea Eagles, the Warriors face the Raiders Dragons and the Raiders line against the Warriors and the Sharks. On the basis of percentage and the stiff opposition those other teams face, you’d have to expect a Far North Queensland tropical cyclone to knock us off the eighth rung. We’re not taking anything for granted though and are ready for the intense weeks ahead. The only control we have in all those equations is our own performance, and while we’re there on the basis of our points scoring ability, it is defence that will get us there and beyond. And on the subject of defence, we’re all very happy with our effort against the Knights last weekend. In the end, that was what won us

ads@cooktownlocalnews.com.au

the game. Forget the score at the end of the game. The Knights are a tough outfit and you never know when they’re likely to come back from an early deficit to snatch your victory right under your nose. That nearly happened last week, with the Knights looking like gaining control of the game after we took an early lead. Particularly impressive though was the composure we maintained to weather their storm and go on to score some late points. Anyway, that’s last weekend’s game, it’s now time to direct our focus on Sunday’s match against the “Sharkies” at their home ground at Remondis Stadium. For sure they’ll buoyed by their impressive victory against the Roosters, and with their home crowd baying for Cowboys’ blood, we are under no illusions about what we’re facing on Sunday. And we’ll have to face them without Ray Thompson who looks like being out for two months after he broke his jaw against the Knights. Ray’s a tough little customer who’s been in great form, so we’ll be doing our best to make the GF for him to have a chance at a comeback for the big one. Remember to tune in on Sunday at 2pm. We do appreciate your support. Until next week - Matt Bowen.

By DOM APRILE

IT was another great day for cricket at the Botanical Gardens last Sunday, where the Hope Vale Heroes took on the Black Mountain Panthers in a 40-over match. Hope Vale batted first and lost a wicket in the first over with Brett Pickup taking the wicket of Preston Deemal That brought Selwyn McIvor to the crease and he and Harry Bowen then went about building the Heroes’ innings. The pair batted carefully to put on a 100 run partnership before Harry was caught by George Kulka off the bowling of Geoffrey Kulka for 38. From there it was tough going for the Heroes as Phillip Walker joined Selwyn at the crease. The BMP boys kept the bowling tight and made it difficult for the new batsmen to get going. Eventually Phillip was caught by Ashley Lyall for two off the bowling of George Kulka. As Selwyn kept the runs ticking over, the new batsmen tried to hang in with him for as long as possible. However, the wickets continued to fall. Darren Gibson came and went with Ash taking another

catch off George’s bowling to dismiss him for zero. Anthony Bowen was next to come and go - falling to Billy Harrigan for one. Selwyn, who has been in a rich vein of form with the bat, brought up yet another 100 for the season as he and Kendall took the score past 200 for the Heroes. He was eventually dismissed for a well-made 119 caught by Eril Ross - Kelly off the bowling of Billy Harrigan whilst trying to push along the run rate in the last session. From there the innings wound down with Billy and Eril combining again to dismiss Kendal for one. Mick and Dom both finished on six not out. At the end of the 40 overs Hope vale had posted a respectable total of 228 and given the BMP boys something to chase. Best bowlers for BMP were George Kulka 2-19 and Billy Harrigan 2-13. BMP started the run chase in perfect style with Geoffrey and Glen Kulka playing some aggressive shots to add 68 for the first wicket before Harry Bowen had Glen well caught by Preston Deemal for 14. From here Geoffrey Kulka really got going with a brilliant display of power hitting, dispatching the Heroes bowling attack to all parts of the Gardens. He brought up his 100 before eventually being dismissed for a quick fire 115 just before the 15-over drinks break, when Preston Deemal took another good

catch of the bowling off Anthony Bowen. Hope Vale looked to be in trouble at the break with BMP cruising at 2 for 152 after 15 overs. but in true Hope Vale style, the Heroes weren’t prepared to give in without a fight. Some tight bowling and a few quick wickets after the break helped slow the runs and put the pressure back on the boys from BMP. Tyrell Ross-Kelly was caught Selwyn bowled Kendall. Then Selwyn ripped through the BMP batting order dismissing Dallas Rootsey (3), George Kulka (0) and Wilbur Kulka (0) in the one over. Hope Vale Heroes allrounder Selwyn McIvor happy with his 119-run effort on Sunday. He later went on to take three wickets to help his side to a five-run victory over the Black Mountain Panthers. A s h l e y Ly a l l a n d Stumpy Kulka steadied the innings and BMP looked to be cruising to an easy victory until Phillip Walker struck, bowling Ash for 27. His wicket was followed by Billy Harrigan’s who was bowled by Preston for seven. It was a tight final few overs with Stumpy Kulka and Eril Ross-Kelly chipping away at the remaining runs until Zane Stallen took a great catch in the outfield to dismiss Stumpy for 16 off the bowling of Darren Gibson. << Continued Page 19.

Wombat_101 edges closer to major prize WOMBAT_101 continues to edge closer to winning the major prize although tipping only four winners in round 24 of the Cooktown Local News/Hinterland Aviation/Inn Cairns NRL footy tipping competition. Wombat_101 had been exposed by his out-of-form tipping, but all of the chasing pack threw away their chance to make up ground. Tipsters struggled with a variety of matches, including the Panthers’ win against the Broncos, Tigers’ victory over the Saints, while only Camf tipped the Sharks to devour the Roosters on

Monday night. Six was the best result for the weekend, with only Cameron Neill attaining that lofty position. With five were The FantasticMrsFox, Nikki, Camf, Pootie Tang, Matthew Thompson, Whiteyfunk and FNQ_Chris. Wombat_101 (4 winners) sits on 131, still seven ahead of those in pursuit. Eye of the Tiger (4) and The FantasticMrsFox (5) are on 124, one ahead of Nikki (5) and Beagleb2 (4) on 123. There is then another seven-win gap to the rest of the field.

Tide times – Cooktown
