Mayors throw out Pearson plan ALTHOUGH not a member of the Cape Indigenous Mayors’ Alliance, Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott is strongly supporting the organisation’s rejection of Noel Pearson being given any further control over funding, policy or service delivery in Cape York. The elected Mayors of Kowanyama, Aurukun, Napranum, Mapoon, Lockhart River, NPARC, Cook Shire and Weipa Town Authority have taken the unprecedented action of sending a letter to Opposition Leader Tony Abbot regarding his approach to Mr Pearson to “review the education of all disadvantaged and impoverished children and explore rolling out the direct instruction teaching model in schools across the nation”. The approach was revealed in an article which appeared in the Weekend Australian in which it was revealed the publication had learnt Mr Abbott wanted to overhaul the education education of disadvantaged Indigenous and non-Indigenous children using the the approaches adopted in Cape York. A spokesman for the group said they wanted government at all levels to acknowledge that they have been elected to represent their people and should be consulted and engaged. He said over $120 million had been spent in the Cape by several organisations controlled by Mr Pearson with little measurable benefit. “The ‘GAP Plan’ will create another form of bureaucracy,” said Lockhart River Mayor Wayne Butcher. “Black tape rather than Red tape. “Cape York leaders are screaming for support on the ground but are not being heard,” said Aurukun Mayor Dereck Walpo. “Pearson’s Direct Instruction is an American methodology which sounds like military or police academy type education. “What has happened to the good old-fashion Australian education?” Mayor Scott said there is a lack of transparency in the awarding of the

Cape York Academy model.” He said that Cooktown High School is experiencing problems with children transitioning from Hope Vale (Direct Instruction) to Cooktown High. “Hope Vale families are moving

to Cooktown to put their kids into the Christian Primary School and State School to avoid the CYAA system,” he said. “There is a demonstrated disregard of the legislated roles and responsibilities of Local Government in

I WRITE today in response to Mr Kluck’s recently published letter “Lock the gate - don’t be fooled”. Council is legislated with responsibility and authority under the Local Government Act 2009 and Building Act 1975, to enter properties and conduct inspections in line with the purpose of the Approved Inspection Program. Council is mindful that this may be a sensitive issue for some property owners and residents; however we are committed to ensuring all ratepayers are afforded

the same level of accountability for their dwellings, regardless of status or location. In our unique environment, we can see bushfires one minute and cyclonic conditions the next, and it’s likely that a natural disaster could wreak havoc upon our communities. • Insurance claims will be rejected for those with non-compliant or unapproved dwellings and structures on their properties; • Homes may exist on properties which Council believes to be

Endeavour Valley Road condition ‘disgrace’ WHAT a disgrace! If you have travelled the Endeavour Valley Road past the end of the bitumen, it is bone shattering. How much longer is this to be endured? I have contacted the Main Roads Engineer in Charge of Endeavour Valley Road, Mr Bob Devine, who really seems to not want to hear or listen, and who grudgingly said: “It should be graded in early September; it gets four gradings a year”.

I wonder how often Mr Devine inspects this road? This road serves the important community of Hope Vale, is a major school bus route and the excessive dust makes life both hazardous and unhealthy. I am told a water truck is too expensive. Since the bitumen was put on the Battle Camp Road, there is more traffic, including tourists with caravans.

The official traffic count past Hazelmere is 510 daily, this being the average for the calendar year. Residents are pinning their hopes on State member David Kempton and Federal member Warren Entsch on getting out there and fighting for them. All I can say is that it was a sorry day the Cook Shire Council handed our road over to Main Roads. Narelle Morris, Cooktown.

Council ‘could be the defendant in any court action’ FIRSTLY, we wish to compliment Mr Ray Cluck on his informative letter, published in last week’s Cooktown Local News, responding to the Council’s actioning of a “property inspection program” covering a specific group of properties in the Endeavour Valley. Rate payers must realise that this inspection program, if permitted to proceed without challenge, will set a precedent for future actions by this Council with impacts shire wide. Council may publicly rationalise the decision for the inspections in the way it has chosen to do so, however the facts of the matter deny this. Council, in an ad-hoc manner and without any consultation with the residents concerned, foisted a garbage

collection system on these same properties. This poorly planned and implemented program was objected to strongly by many of the residents affected for justifiable and valid reasons. Council, in response, objecting to its wisdom and actions being questioned, resolved to carry out building inspections on all the properties in the already contracted new garbage collection area. This act by our elected representatives has caused considerable upset, worry and stress to many of the ratepayers who reside on, or own, property within the designated inspection area. This anxiety has been built upon

further by Council in its publicised threats to utilise the police and court actions in order to force entry to properties. Mayor Peter Scott, and all those Councillors who did not have their vote recorded against the resolution instigating this personally invasive and discriminatory inspection program, should hang their heads in shame at their collective decision. (It is to be presumed, of course, that their houses are not made of glass and are all in order!) Whether we personally would pass this so called inspection process is immaterial, as, on principal, we will forbid an inspection of our property to be undertaken without

council providing proof of receipt by them of a valid, justifiable, relevant and specific complaint regarding our property from an affected person or persons. Council could well be correct in stating that court action may ensue, however the possibility should be considered by Council that it may be the defendant rather than the plaintiff. This issue affects the whole of Cook Shire and we have no doubt that ratepayers in all areas are increasingly anxious about the validity of Council’s future actions. Cook Shire Council to host NQLGA conference THE North Queensland Local Government Association (NQLGA) is heading to Cooktown with an expected 150 - 200 delegates and partners, holding their annual conference from October 2-4 at the PCYC Cooktown Events Centre. Delegates are arriving from all areas of North Queensland from Mackay in the south, to Torres Strait in the north and Mt Isa in the west. A great range of keynote speakers will talk on various topics reflective of current trends and interest in local government today.

Cooktown and Cook Shire have a long history with the NQLGA, with its very first gathering held in Cooktown in 1895 and the most recent in 2002. And coincidentally, the timing of the conference has fallen on the 140th anniversary of the founding of Cooktown, according to the local Historical Society. Confidential information credited with drugs conviction COOKTOWN Police Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant John McArthur has praised the involvement of locals, which saw the recent conviction in the Cairns District Court of a man for the production and possession of dangerous drugs. Brian Peter Hepburn pleaded guilty to the charges last Wednesday, when he was sentenced to a three-year-jail term for his role in the cultivation of 2868 cannabis plants on a property in Mt Amos last year. When police raided the property on July 24, 2012, Hepburn escaped from the scene and again evaded capture a week later, but was subsequently arrested and charged in August. And a 21-year-old Edmonton man charged with the alleged serious assault of a 64-year-old Cooktown in her residence in Cooktown will appear at the November 7 court sittings.

AFTER 131 years of existence buried beneath the intersection of High Street and Leslie Street at Maytown on the Palmer River Goldfield, the location of Alfred Starcke’s 1882 metal survey peg has finally been brought to the surface on Sunday. In July, 1982, honorary surveyor Jim Cullen located the peg, and ,with the help of the then Palmer River Historic Preservation Society (now Friends of the Palmer), surveyed the town layout. With Mr Cullen’s assistance, the Society was able to locate and identify the 53 business and residential sites of Maytown as per Brisbane surveyor Alfred Starcke’s October 15, 1882, official town survey. Thirty-six shop fronts were subsequently named by inlaid ground plaques. These plaques have remained an integral part of visitor viewing. In addition, the school, cemetery, hospital, Warden’s residence and all six streets were signposted. To give visitors an indication of the size of the

town, a large map of Starcke’s town layout was also erected. Then on June 20, 2009, visiting licensed surveyor Steve Watts unearthed the original Maytown survey peg, and dug a large hole around it for visitors to be able to see the artifact. However, an unknown person deemed the hole and the peg to be dangerous and covered it with dirt. Then on Sunday, August 18, 2013, the peg was again unearthed, after which it was set into a ground-level concrete base with an appropriate steel plate identifying the exact location of the surveyor’s underground peg. This is located just two metres adjacent to the Society’s 1983 Maytown Pioneer Monument and Time Capsule structure. So now, the exact location of the peg is available for the information of visitors, without it being a danger to them or in danger of being damaged. John C. Hay, Friends of the Palmer.

Bowls Club opening brings back fond memories

T LENT MEMORIES were sparked by a slide show of the Cooktown Bowls Club history, leading up to the official opening of its new extensions by Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch on Saturday. President Bob Sullivan took members back to the heady days when the green was opened in 1992, which was later followed in 1998 with the opening of the first club house and the problems that were overcome along the way until the present. He told those in attendance that while there had been a slight “blow out” from $1.2M to $1.5M in the construction of their new extension, the facility was totally owned by its members with no debt owing. “When we decided to do this, we made a commitment not to go into debt for it,” Bob said. “And we also made the commitment that wherever possible, we would keep the money in town - using local contractors wherever possible.” He lauded the efforts of principal building contractor Scott Thomason and those of electrician Chad

Darvell and painter Mick Murphy. “It was a labour of love for any of the locals involved in this project,” he said. “Scottie did a fantastic job. “And Chad was still crawling around in the ceiling doing the wiring so we could finish on time. “Mick Murphy was great too as were everyone.” Bob also praised the club’s committee and management committee. “They did a fantastic job through all this, and I am now proud to say that on this, the official day of our opening, we’re 99% done!” Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott, in his address to those gathered, spoke of how he had seen Cooktown grow and progress in his 20 years of residence in the town. “Cooktown has improved,” he said. “And this improvement has been visioned and achieved by locals, with the support of the local community. “And while it must improve, Cooktown must continue to maintain its unique character.” Cr Scott said tourism numbers in

the town had increased significantly during this last season, with council surveys receiving nothing but positive comments about the club’s new extension. “What a great facility and what great tucker!” he said. “Those have been the comments we’ve received,” In opening the club, Mr Entsch fondly remembered his long association with Cooktown and the Bowls Club and congratulated them on their effort. “It’s a wonderful achievement to see this magnificent new facility and know just what it has brought to the town by way of employment to locals,” he said. “And dare I use the pun, ‘You’ve had two Bobs each way’ with your club leaders in Bob Sullivan and Bob O”Doherty.” A plaque commemorating the opening was then unveiled, after which those in attendance continued to enjoy the free fare on offer.

Cooktown talent on show next week ANYONE who enjoys watching children striving hard in any endeavour, whatever it may be, cannot miss next Thursday’s entertainment bonanza titled, Cooktown State School’s Got Talent. will be judged in the three categories of Prep - Year 3, Year 4 - Year 7 and High School. An outside barbecue will be run, while snacks and drinks will also be available. his programs,” Mayor Mene said. “Our own Whole of Community Change Program has been an outstanding success and we have negotiated several joint ventures around economic enterprise and infrastructure. We have created over 40 jobs and there is a new energy in our town.” Mayor Peter Guiverra from Mapoon said: “We are interested in profits not ‘prophets’”, while Mayor Bernard Charlie from NPARC said, “It is time for the elected Mayors to take a stand.”

The exhibition is a culmination of one year of art education sessions run by Cooktown School of Art Society September last year until this August 2013. To facilitate this, we needed funding for art materials so sought on-line “crowd funding” via Pozible. When we did not reach our target of $2000 an article in the Cooktown Local News had a great response - firstly from the Endeavour Lions Club who donated $1300, local pensioner George Theobold’s $400 and many locals with smaller amounts. With those donations, we raised our goal amount and with this as a start, we applied for, and got a further $3100 from Cook Shire RADF providing sufficient funds for this art adventure. We looked for Cooktown kids aged between six and 12, but due to demand we accepted kids under six as long as an adult stayed with them. We also accepted some kids up to 14 with a high level of interest in art. Our aim has been to assist all primary aged kids. Local artists acted as facilitators to run the art sessions. Leaders within Kids Art Society have been Chelsea Cantarella, Chelsea Collins-Herrmann, Holly Farnan and Otto Basson who mentored younger children. Younger assistants and hard workers in setting up for sessions included: Jake and Amber Farnan, Sophia Collins-Herrmann, Sophie Roberts and Savannah and Amber Frame. Parents assisting included: Louise and Jannie Basson, Julie Frame, Jacqui Collins-Herrmann, Chris Muggleton and Katie Dagge, while locals sssisting were: the RSL’S Jodi and Angie, Endeavour Lions, and the Endeavour Christian School. d 100 Years On... A 1913 Bishop’s view on femininism and conscription I THOUGHT it would be interesting to produce here an address given in Cooktown in 1913, by the then Anglican Bishop of Carpentaria, Dr Gilbert White. Firstly though, who was Bishop White? Gilbert White (1859-1933), was born at Rondebosch, Cape Colony, South Africa. Gilbert was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh, and Oriel College, Oxford. A lung condition necessitated emigration and he arrived at Townsville, North Queensland, in September 1885. On August 24, 1900 in Sydney, he was consecrated first bishop of Carpentaria. He wrote fluently and read Greek, Latin, French, German, Italian and Spanish. In 1916 he helped to revive the Australian Board of Missions. Seeing World War I as a crusade for “the liberties of mankind”, White supported conscription and the League of Nations, and opposed a rigid White Australia policy as impeding northern development. Reproduced in part from The Queenslander, Saturday, August 30 1913: Diocese of Carpentaria Conference At Cooktown, Bishop White’s Address. “The conference of the diocese of Carpentaria was commenced at Cooktown last Wednesday, and an interesting inaugural address was delivered by the Bishop of Carpentaria (Dr Gilbert

White). Touching on general matters, the Bishop said there were two great causes tending to disintegrate family life in the present day. The first was the insatiable love of pleasure, and it had to be remembered that no nation ever prospered or could prosper where men lived for pleasure. ‘No doubt this love of pleasure,’ he continued, ‘is largely responsible both among men and women for the modern unwillingness to be burdened with the responsibilities of a family, and the successful efforts to escape from these responsibilities by every perversion and debasement of married life. . . Today we are face to face with a widespread revolt of woman against the conditions of nature, a claim not only to be on an equality with man, but to be able to prove that women can form a separate social unit, independent of man, leaving men free to pursue their own ends while they themselves are free from all domestic and family responsibilities. It is this spirit which in England has manifested itself in the extravagant violence of the suffragette. The truth is, that the life of men and women is inextricably bound up together, and the modern feminist doctrine of setting men against women is as radically false as the

Socialist’s policy of setting class against class. Nature will not be permanently outraged, and the present policy will in the end react most disastrously on the women themselves, for were it carried out to its logical conclusion and women pitted physically and mentally in a bitter contest with men, there is little doubt as to the result. Women must not expect chivalry and respect to survive their repudiation of every need of sympathy and help.’ His Lordship expressed

himself as heartily in favour of the enforcement of compulsory military training in Australia, and said he had no patience with those who complained of the expense and inconvenience of defensive preparation, as though it were unchristian. Was it not Christian to be prepared to defend what one believed to be right, to be ready to champion the wronged and the oppressed, and to face weariness and danger and death at the call of duty? The Bishop referred to the

need for an Australian missionary training college, and in concluding referred to the neglect of religion in evidence to day. It was a dangerous position, he said, but be did not think it would last. There were not a few indications of returning stability, and he believed the time would again come when the trouble would be not that so few professed religion, but that while so many professed so few worthily practised it. Not much changes in 100 years does it?

Turning the other cheek Luke 6:29-31 IMMEDIATELY following His arrest, Jesus was interrogated by the high priest. When He provided an “unsatisfactory” answer, one of the officials struck Him in the face. Instead of literally offering His other cheek to be slapped, the Saviour calmly challenged the man’s unjust action. The Lord did not defend Himself or retaliate, but He also refused to accept the abuse unquestioningly, despite the fact that He knew He would receive more (John 18:21-23). The Bible passage telling us to turn the other cheek confuses many Christians. Are we to stand still while someone beats us up physically or emotionally? No. But we are not to retaliate in kind. Pride will certainly trigger a desire to take revenge on the co-worker who stole credit for our work or the family member who repeatedly says unkind words. Y et we are not to “repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing” (1 Peter 3:9). In daily practice, the situation will determine what form a godly response will take. We may need to ignore the other person’s actions, walk away from abuse, or confront our enemy - confrontation designed to gain understanding and reconciliation is not inappropriate. I n fact, Jesus instructs us to transform rivals into friends by means of respectful discourse (Matt. 18:15). Asking “Why do you feel about me as you do?” can reveal the strength of ‘agape love’ - unconditional love - to minister to a hurting soul despite the potential for injury. Might God be calling you to show ‘agape love’? Pray for the desire and power to “turn the other cheek” as Christ did. Have an awesome week. Pastor Wayne Brennan Cooktown Community Church.

Louise Derry - Full Circle at Nature’s PowerHouse

Artist Lou Derry will open her new exhibition, “Full Circle Cooktown to Cairns” at Nature’s PowerHouse on September 14.

ANTICIPATION is already building among art lovers. Artist Louise Derry, who used to live in Cooktown, is bringing us a new exhibition! Her first ever exhibition was held at Nature’s PowerHouse in July 2003 - and this will be her sixth there! Many of her superbly, beautiful local landscapes grace the walls of Council Chambers, as well as private homes in Cooktown and around the world. This month she’ll be celebrating the 10 years since that very first exhibition - “Full Circle - Cooktown to Cairns” will be a mix of old works and new, giving us a chance to look at her extraordinary talent through a time perspective. “I have always been attracted to vast open

landscapes and rural scenery,” Louise said. “When we arrived in Cooktown in 2002 I found the scenery so incredibly inspiring we ended out staying for seven years.” Lou Derry was born in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania when her parents were working there. She was thrilled to return recently for the first time since she was two and found her birth land to be a fascinating country. She grew up in the English midlands countryside with the urge to travel going back as far as she can remember. Her journeys began with hitch hiking through Europe, then taking her to many destinations across the world before she settled in Far North Queensland with her husband, John Lang. Lou’s work so far has predominantly been

with Pastels. This exhibition will be special for Lou in many ways. Her 83-year-old father, Jim, will be visiting from the U.K. and this will be the first time he has actually attended one of her exhibitions. As always, Lou likes to hold an opening event. This one will be on Saturday, September 14 between 5pm and 7pm and has a special surprise in the selection of person to officiate. If for some very good reason you can’t be there, “Full Circle” will be up in the Vera Scarth-Johnson Gallery at Nature’s PowerHouse for another six weeks. However, if you are in a mood to purchase, you’d better not delay as Lou’s paintings have a habit of being snapped up by eager buyers.

Sports Day at Endeavour College THE North Queensland Sports Education Tour visited Endeavour Christian College on Monday. Students from Prep Year 7 enjoyed taking part in a variety of sports that included tennis, baseball, soccer, rugby league and hockey. The activities started first thing in the morning and finished at lunch time.

During this time all students were able to rotate between the different sports and enjoy the interesting and exciting drills offered in each sport. Students had to call on all their hitting, catching, kicking, throwing, dodging and side-stepping skills to negotiate different challenges set by the different sporting bodies’ development officers. The day was a huge success and it was a great opportunity for students and teachers to access specialist training and to practise the associated skills required

in a range of sports. I only have praise for the NQ Sports Federation, the professionalism of the development officers and the conduct of the students. We at Endeavour Christian College are also grateful to the Cook Shire Council, who as a member of the North Qld Sports Foundation, helped make this day a reality through their annual subscription. Winds to send fishers inland SPRING - what should we expect? Wa r m e r d a y s a n d lighter winds? Well, one out of two is about all we expect. With a strong blast of South Easters flogging the coast, inland fishing will be the best choice, while the estuaries will be the next. The fish don’t seem to mind with the

warmer weather producing some solid captures and some big bust-offs. Lure casters are enjoying some better returns on their time invested, with some cracker fish around - barra, mangrove Jacks, queenfish and some solid threadfin. The week ahead will be tough, with strong winds

Perfect catch on the 4th DAVE Hanna held on to his lead to take out last week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford competition. Dave returned a score of 33 Stableford points, while a count-back was necessary between Ron Beacroft and Wayne King to decide the runner-up after both carded 32 points. Ron was ultimately given the honours. A good field competed in last Saturday’s All About Scales Stableford/Putt competition. Wal Welsh was the overall winner in the Stableford with a score of 36 points, with Alice Burton was the winner of the Putt after playing 18 holes with only 28 putts. All the nearest-the-pins were taken out with Graham Burton landing 2/11, Mick Mason for 14 and Steve Butler for 9/18. There were some close scores for The Cape York Tyres Sunday 9-Hole Stableford competition last week. A count-back was required as both Rick Butler and Graham Burton returned a score of 21, with Rick finally declared the winner. Peter Gunther and Tanya Eizenberg are currently in the lead for this week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly Stableford competition, both of whom have scored 30 Stableford points.

This is a team competition and how you score the game is explained below. It is the Stableford score of their partner multiplied by their own Stableford score (after handicap as usual). E.g. one player gets 2 points for a hole, their partner also gets 2 so it is a score of 4 for the hole (2x2). If a player has a great hole and their partner has a shocker, they get a score of 0 points - in that case because a player has scored zero, their score is zero. Hard to believe, but which member teed off from the 4th only to have their ball go straight up instead of forward and the said member simply took two steps forward to catch the ball when it came back to earth. SOGGY took the Hashers on a merry jaunt this week, up hill and down dale, around the track, over the moon and beyond the stars, all this on toilet paper blown away on the wind. No false trails, or “shiggy”, not even a drinks stop so Hashers could rest their weary legs whilst exercising their tongues. Never the less, the Hashers all returned before the sun set and all agreed that for a run set by a car it wasn’t too bad. Soon Thermo, having demolished the nibblies, called the circle to order and asked for any charges. Oyster was so excited at the charges she was making, she pointed in the circle thereby getting charged as well. Oyster charged Soggy and Granddad with brain fatigue of the “where is Hash,” kind. Barran was celebrating a new toy and Soggy had to have one for the run. Next up was Hash Nosh, which was a beer and prune stew and the meat was definitely not skippy. The rice pudding had a fan club till we found out that it had to be stirred for 45 - the interest quickly waned after that. As always we enjoyed a good feed before leaving. Chat with Matt G’day again, Well, one of two career decisions was made last week when I officially retired from the NRL. While I think I still have at least one good season left in me, I would have loved to have been able to come to terms with the Cowboys for another season, but that was not meant to be. And there has never been any suggestion from me I would play for another club. I’ve always wanted to be a one-club player and have made that clear for a couple of seasons now. It has always been my dream to only play for the Cowboys and I have done that, so I can assure you I won’t be playing for another NRL club at all. So that leaves me with the decision of whether to head over to England for the Super League competition, and to be honest, I won’t know for a few days yet what will be happening there. Like I said, I believe I have at least one good season left in me, if not a few more and the softer grounds and different playing conditions on offer in the Old Dart could be the answer to me playing the game that I love so much, that has been my life, for at least a couple of years yet. You’re a long time retired and I don’t want to finish too early, but like I said, the next few days will see whether I go overseas or take up the offer of a support role with the Cowboys. Meanwhile, I have to focus all my thoughts on Saturday night’s game against the Tigers at home. I couldn’t have wished for a better ending to my career in the regular NRL season than a game in Townsville where I have so many treasured memories. You’d have to think I was made of stone if you believe Saturday night won’t be a very emotional night for me and I hope to share it with all my family, my old mates and the Cowboys fans who have taken me into their hearts for all these years. Like I said though, I have to put that emotion aside until after the final whistle, because what better ending to anyone’s career could there be than a premiership ring? While it might seem to be a fantasy that we can go all the way through to the big one, no one expected us to make the final 8 not so long ago. But after the last weekend’s results, a victory against

the Tigers on Saturday will see us assured of a finals spot on points for and against - even if our rivals the Titans and Warriors can win their final games. Our percentage is plus 48 and the Titans’ is -17, while the Warriors’ percentage is -48. If we lose against the Tigers and either the Titans of Warriors get up against the Storm or Dragons respectively, our season is over. So we must win, no ifs, buts or maybes. If all three of us enjoy victories, the Titans have to at least beat the Storm by more than 65 points and the Warriors have to score more than 98 against the Dragons to leap frog us. What chances of that do you think? Our win against the Sharkies on Sunday was a credit to our new defence. Someone asked me what the first ingredient for that has been, and really it has boiled down to one thing - attitude. I thought Sunday’s victory was a gutsy, gritty, never-say-die effort from everyone, with not a bad player amongst us - we all played very well. I was thrilled to get a try for myself, as well as having the final hand in three other tries. The loss of Matt Scott with a broken finger didn’t seem to affect our momentum against the Sharks, and at this stage I don’t know if, or for how long he will be out with this injury. All I know is that he had X-rays and scans in Sydney on Sunday night and was staying there with the prospect of an operation in front of him and if he will make a return to the field this season. Matt’s arguably the world’s best prop and has been in wonderful form of late, so going into a finals’ campaign without him will be a huge loss. But, at the end of the day, the reality is, the guys taking his place, along with Ray Thompson’s will have to rise to their challenges, while the rest of us have to lift even more to cover Matt’s and Ray’s absences. Like everyone keeps saying, our destiny is in our hands. Isn’t that the same each week though? We have to take each game one at a time and focus on that,

SUNDAY’S game saw the Black Mountain Panthers take on the Council Diggers at the Queens Oval in the longer form of the game. The Diggers actually won the toss and sent BMP into bat, an unusual decision that was explained later in the day. Clive Kulka and Geoffrey Kulka opened the innings and they blazed 58 runs in six overs before Geoffrey was caught behind by Craig Wason off the bowling of Brodie Welsh for 38. Tyrell Ross-Kelly was next in and he managed a couple of sixes before skying one off Chris Bliesner’s bowling to be well caught by Scott Stallan. Adrian Kulka then joined Clive and together they put on a 62 run stand until Scotty caught and bowled Clive for 49 with the score at 148. Jias Mitchell was next and he reached 11 runs before getting a great ball from Rafe Thompson, knocking his off stump out of the ground. Eril Ross- Kelly was next in and he proceeded to smash anything even remotely loose out of the park. His partnership with Adrian reached 93 before Steve Wilton struck, getting Adrian to hit one down Steve Laws throat - out for a well made 49. Ashley Lyall came in and he tried to keep the run rate going, but was caught by Dom Aprile off Brodie’s bowling for six. BMP batted out their 40 overs and reached a daunting total of 312, with Eril on 93 not out. Best bowlers for the Diggers were Brodie and Rafe. After a hearty Father’s Day lunch courtesy of Carol and Helen, the Diggers set about the chase with openers Billy Dukes and Craig. Asho struck in his first over having Craig caught by Clive Kulka for 7. Brodie was next in, but was soon out, bowled by Adrian.
