IGA ‘reno’ underway

AFTER a delay to their original plans, Stage 1 of Cornett’s IGA Cooktown’s finally got started with their renovations on Tuesday. Eight, brand-new air-conditioning units were hoisted by a mobile crane to workmen waiting on the supermarket’s roof, after which the installation will be completed over the next few days. Manager Paul Scott said the delay had been caused by some unexpected hiccups in the resurrection of the organisation’s Bundaberg store, which had been ravaged by the last round of flooding in the city. “Thankfully we’re on track now though, with our planned completion date for Stage 1 being October 11,” he said. Mr Scott said climate control within the supermarket was the benefit to which shoppers could most look forward. “Not only will we be providing a more comfortable environment for our customers, but the improved air conditioning will help to ensure the freshness and longevity of the products in our fruit and vege section,” he said. With the onset of Christmas not far away, Stage 2 has been planned to start after the New Year. “We want to minimize any disruption to our shoppers’ comfort over Christmas,” he said. “But I hope everyone appreciates that our renovations will be designed to make their shopping here better for them. “I would like to thank them in advance for their patience and understanding while we go through these processes.”

Roadhouse fire: A loss for community, travellers By GARY HUTCHISON COOKTOWN travelers, used to stopping in at the Mt Carbine Roadhouse to refuel and have a coffee and chat with proprietors Bruce and Janine Metzger, will now not have that privilege after fire razed the business on Sunday night. Bruce and Janine have been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs after the tragedy, which saw the multi-purpose business reduced to ashes from the fire which started just before midnight on Sunday night. More than just a petrol stop and cafe for travellers, the Metzgers

they only had garden hoses at their disposal. “We just didn’t have enough water,” he said. “Janine had been able to turn off the gas bottles and the fire never reached the petrol pumps, but there were still lots of explosions coming from inside the building.” Mr Bohm said that when it was obvious their efforts were fruitless, his family and neighbours evacuated their homes for fear the explosions might escalate into something worse. “With it being a service station with all that fuel and hearing those explosions, we didn’t know what might happen, so we moved to about

500 metres up the road,” he said. “Just to be safe.” It is believed Bruce suffered minor burns, while Janine was treated for smoke inhalation from their efforts in trying to bring the inferno under control. Queensland Fire and Rescue crews from Mareeba, Yungaburra, Mossman and Malanda attended the incident, after which the fire was brought under control at about 2.15 on Monday morning. Mareeba Police Acting Inspector Richard Trotter told the Cooktown Local News they were not treating the fire as suspicious at this stage and described the incident as a “tragedy”.

“Not just for the Metzgers, I hope they are insured and can start up again,” he said. “But also for the travelling public generally.” Acting Inspector Trotter said that roadhouses like that operated by the Metzgers provided a vital service to the motoring public. “Being able to stop, refuel, have a cup of coffee and a bite to eat and a little rest, does so much to stop fatigue-related accidents,” he said. “Fatigue is the cause of most of the accidents we get up that way and we get a lot. “Only recently, two lives were lost in an accident for this reason.”

But not only that, the couple were friendly, happy voices on the phone to travellers seeking information on flooding over the McLeod River causeway during rainy times. Mt Carbine Hotel Motel proprietor Nick Bohm told the Cooktown Local News he was alerted to the blaze by his wife who had been woken by a loud bang. “She got up to investigate that it wasn’t a burglar, but then she saw the flames across the road and woke me up,” Mr Bohm said. He said he ran across the road to help Bruce battle the blaze, but

 letters to the editor Australia needs to stay in ‘First World’ with technology WE need to fill the intellectual gap between Tony Abbott and reality. His “Broadband plan” has only 10% of the potential of the one which the previous Government was introducing. Although it does not totally close the door on “fibre to the home”, it closes the door to those who can’t afford to pay for the connection themselves. And will “increase” the total cost far beyond the current NBN roll out cost, as economies of scale will vanish - Private oragnisations will contract to individuals one by one, to install fibre to the home (from the “node” in the street), and charge what they like. Thus, having fewer broadband subscribers to pay for their goods and services, Australian companies will not compete with

overseas providers, further strangling our local economy. The Coalition’s plan was obviously purely politically based, as I don’t think “everyone” in the Liberal party camp is completely stupid. We need 100% Fibre network for the following reasons (and 10,000 other reasons once new applications develop): . M edical conferencing - Doctors and related health professionals to patients (especially in remote areas); . Any kind of conferencing including social, will eventually want high resolution, even 3D display, needing huge bandwidth; . Media exchange - for commercial and recreational use (especially upload speeds); . Three D printing - being able to “print” a spare part for your car, fridge, bicycle,

‘Don’t pay’ the Cook Shire Councillors HAVING lived all of my life in the bush in Western Australia and only residing in Cooktown for 2.5 years, I find many things about your local government hard to understand compared to what we had back over there. WA Councillors aren’t paid and the shire is split up into wards with a councillor elected and representing each ward so therefore, certain areas have a representative on the Council. In Cooktown’s case, one ward would be Poison Creek. If Councillors are being paid to represent you and they aren’t, then why pay them. In the Northern Wheatbelt where I was born and bred, most of the town’s population was only about 500 on average, so to make the towns work, everybody had to get on and work towards a better-functioning town with good facilities. Because no one was on the payroll, the Councillors were very average, normal people who had major interests in making the town a better place. They always represented their electorate because it was so small they had to, otherwise the next Sunday night in the local pub or bowling club they would be hauled over the coals. Queensland Councillors seem pretty similar to our politicians to me. It’s almost as if they are being controlled by somebody else with a big stick. I personally would take the money away.

This fiasco at Poison Creek would never happen over there, it wouldn’t even happen in private enterprise. How can a Council supply a service, which loses money (this is all ratepayers’ money, not just Poison Creek people?) and that nobody wants and then forces it upon them. How is this in the best interests of Cooktown? Highly paid employees with lots of degrees make these decisions and our elected representatives play the game as well. Even the Mayor comes out fighting for the loss of our money. Last year the CEO justified the waste of $36,000 on a heap of concrete for a new footpath which was pulled up and thrown away, saying that it was surplus funds and they had to spend it somewhere. The next time you have got money to throw away Council should give me a yell and I guarantee that I can spend it better, and I have very limited education too. I don’t know, it is all above me really. WA wheatbelt towns are great because of their facilities and everybody does their bit for the town. The Council is heavily involved at the grass roots level and a lot of decisions are made with total community involve-

ment. It’s a pity really, because Cooktown is a beautiful and special place to live. You don’t live here for the money, you live here for the lifestyle. Some people say it is the last frontier and the majority of people live here because of a sense of freedom, that’s why we have our bush blocks and do our own thing. Rules that are made for Brisbane don’t work up here. If we wanted to be totally regulated and told what we can and can’t do, then we would live in the city. We are different. No Council in the West gives two hoots about your insurance situation for your farm buildings (shame on you Peter, you’re a “West Aussie” too), so why is our Council threatening huge fines and using this as a reason to make sure our chook sheds are cyclone proof? of weeks ago that the Council wouldn’t make work for themselves, and yet that is exactly what they are doing. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This stuff just isn’t healthy for a small town, sometimes I get the impression that there is too much focus on the Cape and not enough on Cooktown. We really have to get everybody working together otherwise it will only get worse. I heard the other day that there are more properties on the market than what we have people, doesn’t this mean anything to our leaders? Has the Council checked out the validity of what Ray Kluck is saying? If he is right, then somebody is going to end up with egg on their face. It would also save a lot of time and money and maybe the Council could get back to improving our facilities so that people want to live here. I could keep going for ages because I am passionate about making the world being a better place, but I have to stop. Maybe I will jump on the computer and google up “degrees” and see if I can get a cheap one so as I am in a position to help in the decision making process the next time we have to make one. Keep making a difference. Peter Skipworth, Cooktown.

 letters to the editor Refuse collection without consultation is ‘disappointing’ IT is most disappointing that our Council resolved to impose a refuse collection without any consultation with residents of the area affected and, then in response to objections to this impost, further resolved to impose an approved, selective inspection program over these same residents. It is even more disappointing to find that the motion, moved by Councillor Russel Bowman, to carry out the so called, “Approved selective inspection program” in the Endeavour Valley refuse collection area appears to have had the support of all but one of our elected councillors. It is distressing in the extreme for those same residents to be publicly threatened with the attendance of the police, the issuing of warrants and the threat of prosecution should they in any way attempt to hinder the carrying out of the

“Approved selective inspection program” by the very same people elected by them to the positions of Mayor and Councillors. Residents are disgusted at having been duped by these threats into various actions only to find that the inspection program is a farce. If, as Council states, that “all ratepayers are afforded the same level of accountability”, why then have some property inspections consisted of a cursory glance about from a distance, and the issuing of a inspection approval notice and other inspections involved a much more invasive and detailed inspection process, often resulting in a substantial cost to the resident. Our elected representatives should perhaps be reminded that: The guidance of elected representatives in the performance of their respective roles and

responsibilities is based primarily on the five founding principles of the Local Government Act 2009 (Qld), of which the following are particular in their absence on this issue: . transparent and effective processes, and decision making in the public interest; . democratic representation, and social inclusion and meaningful community engagement. Guidance in the specific responsibilities of Councillors includes the following: . Under the principles of the Local Government Act 2009, councillors are required to effectively consult and liaise with their community members, ratepayers and residents. This is part of being an effective councillor. Suggested are several methods of effective consultation, the following is just one of them: . Proactively asking

various people for their views on council services. Whilst residents do realise that Councillors must make decisions that will not please everybody all the time, public consultation can and does assist in informing the decision making process often resulting in improved Council services and enhancing the community - council relationship. Nth Qld ‘dudded’ by the new Abbott Government THE lack of representation in the Abbott Government ministry is a blow to North Queensland. Tony Abbott has ignored the people of the North. There’s no voice from the North in Cabinet or even in the Ministry. Queensland generally has not done well at all. I have real concerns that the Abbott Government will struggle to properly understand the needs and challenges of Queensland because of this clear lack of representation. Both the Member for Leichhardt and the Townsville-based Liberal Senator have been demoted. There will be no one sitting at the Cabinet table, standing up for Queensland and ensuring we get a fair go. Solar Farm will shine brightly on Cook Shire THE remote nature of Cook Shire and Cape York leaves many communities without reliable and sufficient access to power. While some areas of Cook Shire have access to grid connected energy, a large number of com-

munities rely on isolated generation, which is costly and far from ideal. Peak demand for energy is expected to grow at a rate of 3.7 per cent over the next 10 years. Reducing our dependency on electricity from

the South East corner will be a win-win situation. A reliable source of energy is critical to attracting new business opportunities and growing our economic base. Ta k i n g a d v a n t a g e of our natural assets in climate and geography, solar power is the perfect solution. Wi t h t h e i n c r e a s ing move to introduce renewable energy into isolated power stations, Cook Shire is keen to support grid connected projects that will demonstrate renewable energy solutions for the Far North. Lyon Infrastructure has recently applied to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) for funding to commence the Cook Shire Solar Project. Council is very excited at the prospect of having

such a massive renewable energy investment into our region comprising around 25MW of the latest Solar PV technology and the potential for an Australian first with large scale battery storage on site. This project of up to $70m is a major economic game-changer for our communities. At its July, 2013, ordinary meeting, Council resolved to grant Lyon Infrastructure a three year option to lease over Lot 211 on RP 747574 (the old Lakeland Airstrip) with a further 18 month extension should it be required. This had been identified as the most-suitable land area available to construct the solar generation infrastructure and associated facilities. Mayor Peter Scott

said: “Council also resolved that if the option is exercised by Lyon Infrastructure, we will commit to working with the Lakeland community to provide access to a new or alternative airstrip in Lakeland”. In a region where training and employment opportunities are limited, the real economic and educational benefits and positive outcomes of this project cannot be overestimated. All of the identified benefits of such a large infrastructure development will offer significant flow-on effects to our local economy, both directly and indirectly. • Employment for up to 200 people during the construction phase, with ongoing operations and maintenance employment

In light of this, Council is anticipating how the resource sector will change over time. With major shifts towards renewable energy, Council is now taking steps to secure our region’s viability through new infrastructure and key investments such as the Cook Shire Solar Project. Discussions about the long-term future of our region have taken place for many years and it’s time to take action now. Securing a reliable energy supply and kick-starting key infrastructure projects are top priorities for Cook Shire.

Hunt bags 2100kgs of feral pigs ALMOST 2100 kilograms of feral pigs were eradicated from the nearby surrounds as a result of last weekend’s annual Cooktown Hog Hunt. And while it might seem to be a significant dent in the pest’s population, organisers said the number of pigs and their average weight, along with the number of competitors was slightly down on previous years. In all, 111 pigs were bagged, with the highest average weight being 85.5kg. With prizes up for grabs in a number of uniquely Cape York categories, probably the most- bizarre event was, “The Most Maggots”, which was won by (wait for it) a team named ‘Deliverance’. WHILE there was no podium finish for Sarah Henderson at last week’s state final of the Queensland Training Awards, Sarah Henderson believes she returned to Cooktown a winner. Sarah earned the right to be on stage with the other finalists after the announcement she had been awarded the Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year at the regional finals of the 52nd Queensland Training Awards at a ceremony held in the Cairns Hilton in August. ”Although I wasn’t announced as the state finalist, all the nominees were each very worthy of the award,” Sarah said. “I was up against some pretty tough competition, it was just such an honour to be there.” She said her highlight of the night was being on stage at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre accepting the State Finalist certificate that was presented by Minster for Education, John-Paul Langbroek. “And I finally got to meet my Great Barrier Reef TAFE teacher, Stephen Smith,” she said.

Freedom Flotilla claims symbolic victory in West Papua struggle RIGHT: Kevin Buzzacott meets with West Papuan Elders.

FAR RIGHT: Having lived in the West Papua region for most of his life, Poison Creek local Dick Randolph took some time out with the Freedom Flotilla at the markets during their stay in Cooktown.

CLOAK and dagger techniques were used by the Freedom Flotilla to avoid a possible explosive standoff with Indonesian authorities. They have since safely returned to Australia, landing at Gove in the Northern Territory on Saturday, September 14. The flotilla spent several days in Cooktown en route to West Papua. These self-proclaimed ‘peace pirates’ originally planned to sail to Merauke, the most Easterly town in West Papua, to raise awareness and protest about the human rights atrocities committed by the Indonesian government. However the lack of support from the Australian government and warnings of possible military action from the Indonesian government meant a more clandestine protest was decided upon. Newly appointed Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop had

allegedly stated that Indonesia may do “whatever it wishes” to stop the peaceful protest. The Flotilla’s flagship the Pog, which carries a satellite tracker revealing its location on their website, hovered around the border to create a diversion. Meanwhile two tinnies met near the Australia-Indonesia border to ceremonially reconnect the indigenous peoples of Australia and West Papua. During the ceremony Aboriginal Elder Kevin Buzzacott presented water collected from Lake Eyre and ashes from the Aboriginal Tent Embassies from around Australia to West Papuan Indigenous Elders, as a symbolic reunion of the two indigenous peoples and as a symbol of support for the West Papuans’ 50 year long struggle for freedom and justice. Exiled West Papuan, and once political prisoner Jacob Rumbiak was part of the group, he said: “The spirit of the movement is still alive.

Our people face many challenges for their freedom but they still show us today the determination and imagination to continue the struggle.” Kevin Buzzacott said: “We came in peace, not like those other politicians who are coming selling arms to the Indonesian military, like the Americans who just last month sold them Apache attack choppers, those are to be used against West Papuans, and they know it.” The Freedom Flotilla claim a number of events took place across West Papua last week to celebrate the arrival of the Freedom Flotilla. They state in the port city of Marauke, a planned community event which was to be attended by 17 tribes from around the region was stymied by authorities. Jhon Wog, chairmen of the Freedom Flotilla welcoming committee and elder of the Marin Tribe in Merauke, allegedly said

“In a sacred site near Marauke, I released a canoe to sail out to meet the Flotilla boat as a symbol of connecting the spirit of our ancestors. “Thank God for Uncle Kevin Buzzacott, who already brought our ancestral spirit back to reconnect us with the land and hope for our struggle for independence.” The Indonesian authorities have been cracking down on protests and on August 28 four people were arrested and charged with treason for raising the banned Morning Star flag after a prayer meeting in support of the Freedom Flotilla.

Challenge riders to arrive Monday SOMETIME on Monday, September 23, Cooktowners and visitors will line Charlotte Street to welcome this year’s entrants in the Cardiac Challenge. Sunlight will reflect off spinning wheels, while the air will hum to the tune of gears as the cyclists ride the last leg of the event down to the parks by the Endeavour River. A charity event, funds raised by the volunteer riders will go towards the cardiac unit at Cairns Base Hospital. Starting at 6am on Saturday, the first stage of the event is a gruelling 135km leg over the Kuranda Range to the Mt Carbine Rodeo Grounds where

the riders and their support crews will camp over night. Then on Sunday morning, they will embark on the stretch between Mt Carbine and Lakeland, where they will camp at the Lakeland State School before departing in staggered starts on Monday morning for the shortest leg, the 85km trek into Cooktown. As in previous years, the riders will gather on Hope Street, before engaging in a grand parade to the finish line by the Endeavour River. At this stage, it is unknown just how many riders will undertake the event, or at what time they are likely to finish in Cooktown.

Entsch to help shape the future of north

FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch will play a pivotal role in determining the future direction of the Far North. Mr Entsch will Chair the committee which will formulate the White Paper that will drive the implementation of the Coalition’s Policy for Northern Australia. “Northern Australia has faced significant challenges but there are now enormous opportunities - nowhere more so than in Far North Queensland,” Mr Entsch said. “(Prime Minister) Tony (Abbott) asked me if I would take responsibility for formulating the White Paper and delivering it in 12 months’ time. “I’m excited by the prospect of being able to contribute as the Chair, overseeing the writing of the White Paper with all of its resulting recommendations. “The tabling of these recommendations will then provide us with an opportunity to establish an appropriate budget to commence the second phase, implementation.” Mr Entsch served on the Howard Government’s Northern Australia Land and Water Taskforce in 2006, when he travelled across the top end of Australia, from Kununurra to Cairns. My familiarity with the area and knowledge of the issues is going to be a great advantage,” he said. “I’m very excited by the fact that we have a specific Northern Australia Policy; it is a cornerstone of our commitments as a government. Now, we’ve got 12 months to bed it down and put forward recommendations. “We’ll have to look at all aspects in relation to water security, agricultural opportunities, land tenure, property insurance issues, diversity for economic security, energy, tropical education, health and sports, defence, fishing. . . . there’s a whole raft of things.” Mr Entsch said many submissions had already been received to the draft ‘green’ paper that was released in June, which has potential to affect communities north of the Tropic of Capricorn, extending from Rockhampton to Exmouth. “I’ll continue to encourage individuals and community leaders to submit their ideas. It is my intention also to travel widely across the region to maximise the opportunities for Northern Australia’s regional communities, so they all have input in the White Paper formulation. “The recommendations in this White Paper will form the road map for governments in establishing the future economic, social and environmental policy direction for Northern Australia.”

Gordon grateful for Cape York support THE strong support from the people on Cape York Peninsula was a humbling experience for Labor candidate for Leichhardt, Billy Gordon. Mr Gordon felt honoured and was sorry he couldn’t get over the line in the national election held on September 7. “We bucked the national trend with the Labor Party receiving only a slight swing against us in Leichhardt,” he said. “If the results on Cape York and the Torres Strait were replicated around the electorate, I would be your local member and that gives me a sense of both pride and humility. “I’m sorry I didn’t get to visit every community on the Cape, but I thank those voters who trusted me with their vote. “I was encouraged by many wonderful people around the Cape whose support inspired me to fight this election right up until the close of the polls on Saturday night. I was really looking forward to thoroughly representing this diverse electorate.” Continued Page 9 >>

How do I tell if I have digital TV? If you can see ABC2, SBS TWO, GO!, 7TWO or Eleven, you are digital ready and don’t need to do anything.

If I can’t see those channels, what do I have to do? Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner; or • a satellite TV system. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your satellite dish or antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

Western Cape survey backs culling of crocs Photos by SHANE SEYMOUR

A SURVEY in Western Cape York has found “a degree” of culling of crocodiles should be undertaken. The Great Weipa Crocodile Survey found that, while a large majority of respondents said they respected crocodiles and considered them important for the environment, most considered there were too many and a degree of culling should be undertaken. The survey, undertaken by the University of Queensland in collaboration with Australia Zoo, was carried out to understanding how residents feel about living alongside the world’s largest reptile, “This is an interesting opinion,” said Dr Hamish Campbell from the University of Queensland and author of the survey. “It is the modification of human behaviour and not crocodile culls that will solve the issue of crocodile attacks. “For example, if the crocodile population around Weipa was reduced by one half, who would suggest it safe to swim across the Mission River?” The survey demonstrated that a vast majority of residents understood the dangers of swimming or wading in waterways around Weipa. However, some would swim in local waterways depending upon location, and some had even swum in areas where there was a recent crocodile sighting. Residents also understood that camping near water and leaving food scraps around the camp attracted crocodiles. Despite being ‘crocodile aware’ about one third of all those who participated in the survey had experienced some sort of close encounter with a crocodile. Primarily, their close encounter was a direct result of not undertaking crocodile-safe behaviour around waterways. “This showed that, although most residents understand the risk posed by crocodiles and generally modify their behaviour around waterways, sometimes they forgot or thought that it was okay to bend the rules just this once,” Dr Campbell said. “Of course, most of the time it may be okay, but it only has to happen that once to ruin your day.” Dr Campbell pointed out that a large majority of crocodile attacks in Australia have been upon locals who were presumably well aware of the dangers posed by crocodiles. Also 30 per cent of crocodile attack victims had consumed alcohol prior to swimming in areas where crocodiles were present. “Alcohol changes behaviour and makes people less aware of potential hazards,” Dr Campbell stated. In the survey, a number of residents said they had been harassed by crocodiles at Pennefather Beach and Rocky Point boat ramp. “So be vigilant at these areas and don’t leave fish frames or other food lying around,” Dr Campbell said. About 14 per cent of the adult Weipa population (309 residents) completed the survey and the survey was completed by an equal number of males and females from all age groups over 18 years of age. The results of the survey will go towards assessing crocodile/human conflict around the local area.

S. S. Suva - ship cursed by disaster

e The S S Suva. Photo submitted.

S. S. SUVA was a passenger vessel, 2229 gross tons. Lbd: 300’3” x 41’1” x 11’8”, built in Belfast for Milburn W. & Co. (AngloAustralasian Steam Nav. Co. Ltd., Milburn Line) London. She operated for many years on the Fiji run and also coastal shipping on the east coast. She was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in July, 1915, and fitted out as an auxiliary cruiser, a role served on patrols in the Bay of Bengal and Persian Gulf where she gave significant support to T.E. Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia’s Arab revolt. At the end of the Great War she was laying in Sydney again. In 1919, Suva was again requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy and commissioned for just seven weeks as a Special Service Vessel to carry Admiral Lord Jellicoe and his staff to Northern Australia. Suva would have been well-suited for her Special Service Vessel role, she had first class accommodation in 48 staterooms. She was sold to Madrigal and Co., Manilla in July, 1928, and renamed Sirius, then in December 1929, she was sold to Fernandez Bros and renamed Bohol. She was ultimately sunk by a Japanese air attack in Manilla in December, 1941. When I started to research the Suva, I discovered this ship seemed to have disasters and near misses just about every year. From collisions and cyclones to fires, I think the saddest may have been the disaster which occurred in Cooktown in October 1913. All papers reported on the tragedy and this story comes from the Townsville Daily Bulletin, Friday, October 24, 1913. The Suva Disaster: The steamer Suva arrived at Townville on Thursday afternoon from her usual Gulf run, and particulars of the drowning of two of her crew at Cooktown were obtained from Captain Bartlett. It appears that the Suva arrived at Cooktown just before 4 o’clock on Wednesday morning. When the vessel was close to the wharf, a boat was lowered with two men in her to take the stern line ashore. When in the water, the boat got under the discharge pipe of the steamer and began to fill. The men apparently lost their heads, for instead of fending the boat off out of reach of the water from the pipe they plunged overboard and made for the shore, which was between 20 and 30 yards distant. It was bright moonlight, and as the men could swim, no one anticipated any harm. Captain Bartlett, however, said he had the satisfaction of knowing that no chances were taken, as life buoys were thrown over and another boat lowered at once. But neither of the unfortunate men reached the shore alive. The names of the deceased, who were able seamen, were Patrick Keegan, aged 26, and Robert Howe, 22 both being single men. Keegan had been on the Suva for three years, his home being in Woolloongabba, Brisbane, where his parents reside. Howe, whose people live in the old country, had only been on the steamer two days, he having been employed on the tender, Dugong in the Gulf, and was going south for a holiday, and shipped on the Suva as a seaman in preference to going as a passenger. Keegan’s body was recovered at 6.40, and until 7 o’clock efforts were made to restore life, but unavailingly. Search was still being made for Howe’s body when the steamer left Cooktown. A police inquiry was held on Wednesday afternoon before the vessel left. The funeral of Keegan also took place that afternoon, all hands from the vessel attending, whilst wreaths were sent by the crew and by the master, officers and staff. According to our records Robert Howe’s body was never recovered.

Gordon grateful << From Page 7 Mr Gordon said many people had approached him since the election to encourage him to stand again. “The way I feel right now, I’m ready for another campaign any time. I will be considering my future in the weeks ahead.” Mr Gordon praised both Julia Gillard and outgoing prime minister Kevin Rudd on their strong leadership. “They implemented the Better Schools Plan, DisabilityCare Australia, the National Broadband Network and affordable paid parental leave,” he said. “Not a single Australian now and in the generations to come has not benefited from the great job of the Gillard and Rudd Labor governments. “They guided Australia relatively unscathed by the Global Financial Crisis. “Kevin Rudd shone a spotlight on social justice for Indigenous Australians and charted a path for future governments to continue addressing the inequalities faced by Australia’s first people. “Australia is a vastly better country today because of Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd and the Australian Labor Party.”

LOUISE DERRY EXHIBITION at NATURE’S POWER HOUSE By GARY HUTCHISON TEN years after she opened her first ever exhibition at Nature’s PowerHouse, artist Louise Derry made a triumphant return to the venue on Saturday night with her latest exhibition, “Full Circle - Cooktown to Cairns”. And for the former Cooktown resident of seven years, Saturday night’s opening was her sixth. Surrounded by friends, fellow Cooktown artists and other art enthusiasts, Ms Derry and her husband, John Lang, entertained her guests in the quiet ambience of the PowerHouse’s verandah and Cooktown’s Botanical Gardens. Speaking to those in attendance before declaring the exhibition opened, Ms Derry expressed her sincerest gratitude to Jo Wynter, whose influence she credited for her first display in July 2003. Later, she told the Cooktown Local News that, “Jo made it happen.” “She was very instrumental in helping to launch my career,” she said. “Her enthusiasm for my was what

made it all happen back then.” Mrs Wynter said she fondly remembered the occasion. “I distinctly remember it was standing room only,” she said. In charge of running displays for the Very Scarth-Johnson Gallery at the time, Mrs Wynter she only wanted “top work”. “I had seen Lou’s work and fallen in love with it,” she said. “We had to have it for the gallery and I wasn’t taking no for an answer.” “Full Circle - Cooktown to Cairns” is a mix of old works and new, providing are enthusiasts with the chance to look at what has been described as her ‘extraordinary talent’ through a time perspective. “I have always been attracted to vast open landscapes and rural scenery,” Louise said. “When we arrived in Cooktown in 2002 I found the scenery so incredibly inspiring we ended up staying.” Ms Derry’s works will remain on display at Nature’s PowerHouse until Saturday, October 26.

We are to be “shaken up”, presumably to divert public attention from the shortcomings of our elected representatives. hard for our inadequate salaries, and we do it for the love of public service. Soon as we reach our offices in the View morning, we have meetings to attend. from We have meetings about everything, from our State’s tax revenue to the the Hill office coffee supply, and meetings take time. On top of that, we have to absorb our various Ministers’ requests and requirements, and handle their suppliants. The suppliants are the long list of people sitting in our waiting rooms who expect support from the Government for their various projects. This one takes our time by demanding that schoolchildren should not take a healthy two-hour bus ride to school every morning. That one would like sick people to be guaranteed health care even if they do not live in Brisbane. Yet another wants a replacement for the car he lost in a pothole on the Bruce Highway. It is not easy to deal with these people because if you put a foot wrong, they are off blabbering to the newspapers, and no one wants that. VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) You will need to use your intuition early in the week. The most logical solution may not be the best one to take. Decide what feels right to you and do that. Romance. You will be in a very romantic mood. Everything will go well, provided you don’t allow your emotions to go overboard. Calm yourself by taking a few deep breaths throughout the night.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You need a break and should spend some time doing something unproductive. Don’t feel guilty about enjoying yourself. Romance. The Moon/Mars Midpoint now in your sign will give you the courage to force through some changes. It may be awkward at first, but give it time to take effect.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) A possession which you borrowed recently from a friend is due back. It would be unlucky for you to keep it any longer. Send them a note of appreciation as well. Romance. Be careful not to smother your partner with too much attention. They may need more time to do their own thing.

FOR KIDS

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) You may need to give some thought to a strange dream. You will not be satisfied until you have worked out what it really meant. Romance. This will be an excellent period for romance. You’ll have so many suitors and may start to get confused! Choose a few “must have” qualities to look for.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A deal which you have been waiting for will soon come along. Don’t dither or you will miss this opportunity. Romance. Don’t forget about your partner’s needs. They could do with some extra encouragement at the moment. Set aside your tasks for a night and concentrate solely on them.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

FINDWORD No. 166

Don’t let a negative remark throw you off course. You need to have thicker skin to get through things. Know that you are a good and deserving person. Romance. A long discussion with a colleague will help you to see things in your own personal relationship much more clearly.

A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) You will have to suffer the consequences of your recent extravagance! You may have a little less money in the bank than you imagine. If you can’t return any items, set a budget and stick with it! Romance. Be careful not to get into a muddle over where you are planning to meet someone.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

Provided you don’t get too excited, this will be a very good time for a night out with your pals. They will be looking for a low-key outing. Romance. A quiet evening at home with your partner will be more productive than you expect. The night doesn’t have to be all about work though.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)

You may be surprised to find out who has suddenly taken an interest in your work. Be sure to show them just how much you can do and they may make an offer. Romance. Your partner will be there when you need them. A kind gesture will show how much they care and support you.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

A lack of money may create difficulties for a while. You may have been a little too extravagant over the past week. Look for free events in your area instead of spending more money. Romance. Don’t allow family duties to get in the way of a romantic evening. You need your couple time!

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

The common question that gets asked in business is, ‘why?’ That’s a good question, but an equally valid question is, ‘why not?’. – Jeffrey Bezos

SOLUTIONS No. 166

Contact with the Venus/Moon Midpoint will help give your esteem an immediate boost. Keep your confidence soaring by spending time with like-minded people. Romance. This is an excellent time to get to know your partner a little better. There are parts of their life that are still a mystery.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A habit which you have been trying to give up may be harder to break than you expect. You’ll need to use all your willpower! Romance. A new relationship will soon be getting off the ground. However, you may be uncertain about your feelings for this person. Take your time with them!

Cooktown a ‘must’ for concert performers

Concert pianist Paula Lu is one of two performers who will present recitals.

COOKTOWN has been declared a “must” performance destination on the first Encore Concerts’ Student Award Recital Tour of Queensland! This is thanks to Encore Concerts’ reputation and the initiative of Kirill Monorosi and Wojtek Wisniewski who so enjoyed visiting Cooktown, performing on our beautiful verandah and the warm welcome from the local audience. As principal music lecturers, teachers and concert performers, their proposal to award the best graduating students with a concert tour was enthusiastically received. The Award is to provide outstanding graduating piano students at the prestigious Australian Institute of Music, AIM, an opportunity to perform a series of concerts in Far North Queensland, giving them the chance to further their performance skills and help prepare them for a concert career.

Encore Concerts is honoured to present this first Student Award Tour. AIM has around 100 students from the Asia-Pacific region and Australia. Herman Soenario was one of the judging panel to assess the graduating piano students and select the two young performers. A major attraction for the winners is to tour the rainforests and enjoy a trip to the Reef. Nancy Yi Sun won her first piano competition in China at the age of 11, and has since won more in her homeland as well as in New South Wales. She has performed at the Sydney Opera House, given solo recitals as well as performing as a soloist with orchestras. Paula Lu was five-years-old when she began piano lessons and has since won numerous major

prizes and awards. At 13-years-of-age she was invited to perform the Grieg Piano Concerto at Sydney Town Hall with the touring Hunan Symphony Orchestra from China. She too has given successful solo recitals and performed the major concerto repertoire works. So, on Friday, September 27, both Award winners will perform works by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Liszt and Schumann at Nature’s PowerHouse from 6 pm. This time entry will be $30 for adults, but as always will include bubbles and nibbles in the interval. Please ring Jacqui to book on 4069 5442. We are aware it’s the Wallaby Creek Festival weekend, but hope you’ll be able to fit in both entertainments in a typically busy dry season weekend. By JACQUI SYKES

P&C meeting tonight ANYONE interested in the workings of the Cooktown State School’s P & C is invited to attend tonight’s meeting, which will be held at the PCYC Cooktown Events Centre from 5pm. Nominations have been received for the vacant positions of Treasurer and Secretary, so please come along to support the new Executive committee and find out what is happening at your local state school. All members of the public are invited to attend. See you there. Nikki Darvell, President Cooktown State School P&C.

Photo Club’s new home COOKTOWN Photography Club members are advised that as of next Wednesday, September 25, they will have a new home and a new day for their monthly meetings. The club will hold its next meeting in the Cooktown Bowls Club meeting room from 6pm. With the unavailability of the Cooktown State School’s library, Bowls Club President Bob Sullivan was only too happy to grant the club access to its facility. “That’s what it’s there for,” Bob said. For further information, contact Gary Hutchison on 0411 722 807.

Along the BLOOMFIELD TRACK Gold medal view of the Bloomfield Track Story and photos By MIKE D’ARCY

PAT, Alex and Jessica Gruter-Larson travelled to Oz and the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra to compete in the Commonwealth Royal Life Saving Society Championships. They live in freezing Ontario Canada, so needed a dose of warm weather on their first Australian trip. We discussed an interesting similarity in weather patterns. Much of our rain (especially May-November) comes from South-easterlies picking up moisture over the Coral Sea, then dumping rain as it reaches the mountains. The Gruter-Larsons have a similar situation, with an icy twist. They live on the edge of the Great Lakes and they get very special and very cold snow dumps at about minus 30 degrees centigrade. I know where I’d rather be. The Daintree’s good. They agreed. Jessie was one of Canada’s proud representatives in Royal Life Saving. Royal Life isn’t as glamorous as Surf Life Saving, but we should thank their volunteers for patrolling the rivers and pools of Australia where they’ve saved many lives over the years. Pat modestly revealed that Jessie had won two individual gold medals, even

Brutus working out above the Bloomfield River ford crossing. though she was flanked by Aussies in both lanes at the AIS in Canberra. Fast track migration and Honorary Queenslander status would be good. The Bloomfield River drive has been excellent for croc-spotting. We’ve seen plenty of big crocs lately, with four sightings in one day the best so far. Big, beefy Brutus has been hanging

out above the ford crossing on the Bloomfield River and other crocs are frequently near the Boat Ramp and the Bloomfield Track River lookout. It’s September, the main month for flowering orchids. Look out for orchids at Marrdja Boardwalk, Thompsons Creek and near the Wujal Falls. Keatings Lagoon is always good, of course. Water-lilies have had a growth spurt and cover the Lagoon beautifully at the moment. With waters slowly receding, birds are scattering out throughout the Lagoon. The combination of clear weather, blue skies and low tides provides sensational views from Grassy Hill,

Archer Point, Cowie Beach, Donavan’s Ridge and of Cape Tribulation from the Track, so take a trip and see for yourselves. Cairns Council has almost finished their annual Bloomfield Track grading and the surface is in excellent shape. Much worse is the Wujal to Rossville

Section which is badly in need of work, so let’s hope that the Cook Shire starts work on it soon. Happy travelling. Mike and Trish D’Arcy D’Arcy of Daintree 4WD Tours Phone: +61 7 4098 9180 www.darcyofdaintree.com.au

The lessons from golf balls/pebbles/sand and coffee FOLLOWING on from last week’s ‘Stress Management’ article, I would like to share this with you that one of my ‘Facebook’ friends forwarded:

“When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day is not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and two cups of coffee. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and fills it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor then picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous,’Yes’. The professor then produced two cups of cof-

fee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. ‘Now’, said the professor, as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognise that this jar represents you life. “The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends and favorite passions. Things, that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. “The pebbles are the

things that matter like your job, house, and car. “The sand is everything else . . . the small stuff’. ‘If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. ‘The same goes for life - if you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. . . . ‘So . . . pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. ‘Spending quality time with your family, play with your children, take

your partner out to dinner and spend time with good friends. ‘There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap. ‘Take care of the golf balls first . . . the things that really matter - set your priorities. ‘The rest is just sand.’ One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented? The professor smiled and said” ‘I’m glad you asked. it just goes to show you that no matter how full your

life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend’.” Please share this with other “Golf Balls”.

Student of the Month

The Bloomfield River State School’s Student of the Month is Carleesha Tayley from the Prep/Year 1 class. Carleesha manages to put our school motto, “Be Safe, Be a Learner & Be Respectful” into action every single day and consequently is always contributing positively and happily to our classroom. Carleesha goes out of her way to care for people around her and also tries her hardest to be listening and following instructions all the time. Carleesha’s hard work and strong attendance is paying off and she is a delight to have in our classroom.

Cal Wilkin is the Endeavour Christian College’s Student of the Month for September. Cal is a fun loving student who is always ready to face a challenge. His love for the outdoors is evident in his conversations, and his knowledge about fishing and hunting is remarkable. He especially loves sharing stories about his pig hunting trips. He spotted a tree snake in the school yard when most other kids could not see it, even when it was pointed out to them. It is a pleasure to be around Cal and he can be relied upon to give all set tasks his best shot.

Bree Deeral is the Student of the Month at Hope Vale Campus. Bree has excellent attendance and behaviour. She loves reading and spelling. This term, Bree attended the Hope Vale Culture Camp and had lots of fun! Bree sets a great example in everything she tries.

‘Cox’ needs a firm hand THIS Monday, a convoy of vehicles headed out into the sunset, shedding the strain and hustle of the big city life in exchange for a few hours of country tranquility. The run this week was laid by a mower who did a very good job of tieing toilet paper to trees. The mower or “Cox” as it insisted on being called, refused to have a drinks stop as his tank was full. Fakawe will have to be careful to keep Cox under control whilst riding over rough ground as he obviously needs a firm hand. The run visited an old, almost forgotten road with a rickety old bridge, which took some older Hashers down memory lane, which, as always, ended in a dead end. At last, all returned to Fakawe and Feeler’s rain forest retreat to sample an array of experimental dishes. Then Thermo placed the Hash Crown firmly on her head and called the circle to order. Xmas was late for Hash owing to the fact that she was up the creek and couldn’t find it. She was joined on the charge by Oyster who was having a hand up whilst getting her leg over a horse (not donkey). Soggy Box and Cracklin got one for the car lifts that didn’t happen. No name Rob was welcomed back and Fakawe got one for mistreating poor Cox. Next Monday, September 23, the Hash is at the Gravel Pit just over the Annan Bridge. The run will be set by Titus and Wet Check and it starts at 5.30 pm. Every one is welcome to come and join us. For details, contact 4069 5180, leave a message and I will get back to you. On-on Crak Bak.

Wet lines lead to empty greens GOOD fishing weather last week must have enticed a few members to wet a line, because only a handful competed in The Italian Restaurant Weekly Stroke competition. Close scores were recorded by the four players who did play, with Steve Butler winning the competition with a nett score of 61. However, a fair field turned out last Saturday to compete in the Cooktown Hardware & Italian Restaurant Monthly Medal competition. The men’s competition was hot with half of the men’s field returning cards well under par. “Beno” Welsh was the men’s winner for the day with a nett 61, with Graham Burton the runner-up with 63. Carol McKinna had a fine game of golf to be declared the ladies’ winner after she retrned a 1-under-par 68. Alice Burton was the runner-up with 72. The nearest-the-pins were landed by Andy Daly for 2/11, Wayne King for 14 and Graham Burton for 9/18. Only two members competed in the Cape York Tyres Sunday 9-Hole Stableford competition, with Graham Burton the winner with 22 points. This week’s Italian Restaurant Weekly competition is a Stableford and it is being played off the red tees. This Saturday’s competition is sponsored by Honeycombes Cairns and is a 2-Person Ambrose. Grab a partner and come out and try your luck. Just a reminder to members that the club currently has a raffle going and you can purchase tickets from the club house. The raffle is valued at over $120. Up for grabs is a 100 Cleveland Classic HB putter and a dozen TaylorMade RocketBallz. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. Also available for purchase is a $2 ticket in the 100 Club. We have only filled half the numbers so as soon as all numbers are purchased, $100 is up for grabs for the winner. As the saying goes, “you gotta be in it to win it”, so come out and buy a few tickets today! Happy golfing everyone Kelly Barnett Manager Cooktown Golf Links

Maytown once had 12 pubs By BRIAN RANDALL Queensland Places Coordinator Queensland Memory State Library of Queensland THE town of Maytown was once the “capital” of the Palmer River goldfield and was at its most prominent and populous in the late 1870s. Maytown began as an rough bush camp for the original gold miners but rapidly grew with the influx of large numbers of miners. Originally called Butcher’s Gully, it later became known as Edwardstown after the local butcher Jack Edwards. The settlement was formally surveyed in 1875 by A.C. MacMillan and named Maytown in honour of his daughter. As with similar gold rush settlements, Maytown’s growth was rapid and by 1876 there were 12 hotels, six stores, three bakers, three tobacconists as well as banks and a post office. In 1877 a newspaper, the Golden Age was established, later to be replaced by the Palmer Chronicle. The first crushing mill was established here in 1876, on the Wardens Reserve, marking the end of the early alluvial gold seeking period and the beginning of the deep reef mining period. Maytown’s early growth steadied

in the 1880s and 1890s, however the town was still a prominent centre in the Palmer River area. This early period of growth and relative stability is shown by the establishment of a branch of the Government Savings Bank, a state school, courthouse, school of arts, hospital, police barracks as well as a miners’ institute. By 1900, the population was around 700. However, Maytown’s growth declined after this time, hastened by the diminishing gold yields and by the 1950s the town was virtually deserted. The residents of Maytown, particularly during its early period, saw their town as the administrative centre of the area and believed its future was assured. The presence of stone kerbing and channeling, rare in such towns, confirms this and is evidence of the residents’ belief that Maytown would remain an important centre. Today, little remains from Maytown’s glory days, with the only physical remnants being the remains of the baker’s oven, some stone kerbing and channeling as well as the town cemetery. However, in acknowledgement of Maytown’s importance in the history of Queensland, these remnants are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

Bowls weekend a success THE Cooktown Bowls Club’s annual “Orchid Festival” was held over the weekend. The event proved an outstanding success with teams travelling from Mossman, Herberton, Atherton, Mareeba, Dimbulah and Yungaburra to compete with Cooktown bowlers. The mixed competition on Saturday saw Victor Tiroboschi’s team from Mareeba narrowly edge out Cooktown’s Sue and Laurie Steffensen and Rob and Lyn Burton. Former Cooktown local Danny Gibson’s Yungaburra team finished

third. A highly competitive men’s event was held on the Sunday, with Mossman 2 edging out another Col Andreasson’s composite team, with Barry Clarke’s Cooktown 1 snapping at their heals to finish a very creditable third. All visiting bowlers heaped high praise on the Cooktown Club for organising a great competition with outstanding hospitality and warm fellowship and vowed to return next year in bigger and better numbers. THE estuaries have responded quickly to the great weather with some outstanding fishing being enjoyed by anglers last week. Barra, mackerel and queen fish have been prominent amongst the captures around the Wharf, while grunter, golden trevelly, fingermark and a few mangrove Jacks have also been firing. Offshore has been on fire as well, with coral trout, Spanish mackerel, red emperor and large
