Picnic Day festivities bring good times to Eylandt There was plenty of fun to be had on Eylandt during the Picnic Day festivities, with crowds of Groote Eylandt residents turning out to enjoy the sunshine and entertainment. As well as all your favourite Picnic Day events, the Picnic Day Committee organised a host of new competition categories including Best Picnic Setting, new Fun Run categories of Father, Son, Mother, Daughter and first Push Chair, spear throwing, and the much loved, Coconut
Critters Creations. “We received some very positive feedback from the day and it was great to see so many getting into the spirit of the day,� said Festival Organiser, Richard Tomlinson. Greetings Eylandters, It has been another busy month on Eylandt with some of the best event of the year brining residents out to enjoy the fun. Check out our spread of Picnic Day festivities on pages 4 -7 and check back in next edition for all the news and photos from Trivia Night.
Darwin Festival rocks the Top End The Darwin Festival, one of the biggest events on the Top End’s cultural calendar has been taking place for the past 18 days and Darwinians have been out enjoying the fun. Kicking off on the 8th August, the festival was held in Darwin’s Festival Park and Georges Green at the Botanical Gardens. The festival has featured a mix of events from a concert by American country singer, Kenny Rogers to the National Indigenous Music Awards. Other acts have included The Black Arm Band Company, with You Am I frontman Tim Rogers joining in, Santos, cabaret act, La Soiree, the Tarian Malam Night Dancers from Indonesia, comedian Colin Hay and many others.

Police Beat
Groote Eylandt
A contractor had his work vehicle stolen from Umbakumba last week. Two offenders were arrested by Police, appeared before last week's Alyangula court and were sentenced to terms of imprisonment. Two other males received terms of imprisonment for aggravated assault and breached DVO offences. A number of persons have been sent to court recently for drink driving and other traffic offences after leaving licensed premises around Alyangula. There is no excuse for anybody to be drink driving in this town and anybody caught will be put before the courts. After over three and a half years service on Groote Eylandt, popular Policeman, Ty Bellman and his family are transferring to Darwin next month. His dedication to his work and community spirit will be missed and we wish him and his family well.

NT Government RAMPS UP Alyangula BMX The Northern Territory Government Sports & Recreation Department has agreed to fund a skate ramp for Groote Eylandt’s BMX Club. Club President, Chris Love, was delighted at the exciting news, which he called a ‘big step forward’ for the BMX Club. India has surged ahead of China and
Britain as the largest source of settlers to Australia. The latest figures show that 29,000 Indians, most of them qualified professionals, including software engineers and cooks, became permanent residents in Australia, which is more than 15% of the total intake according to the 2011-12 Migration Programme report. Qantas has posted its first annual loss since it was privatised in 1995, amid high fuels costs and growing losses at its international operations. The firm made a net loss of A$244m for the year ending 30 June. This compares with a net profit of A$250m in the previous year. The US space agency's (Nasa) Curiosity rover has finally begun to roll across the surface of Mars, the Red Planet. The Mars robot, which landed two weeks ago, turned its six wheels briefly on Wednesday to satisfy engineers that its locomotion system was in full working order. Curiosity is a sophisticated mobile science laboratory which has been built to drive at least 20km across the Martian landscape to investigate whether the planet ever had the conditions necessary for life. Lap-a-thon

The BMX Lap-a-thon has been in the planning for many months and is ready to take off 3.pm on Saturday 22 nd September at the BMX track. So in the next couple of weeks there will be lots of young club members out there chasing sponsors to sponsor them per lap or make a donation. On the day the kids get 3 hours to ride as many laps as possible and we have some fantastic prizes on offer. Two IPAD’s are up for grabs for the top two fund raisers. (9 and under and 10 and over) as well as lucky draws during the event. Please support the youth in their efforts for fundraising for this fantastic addition of our facility. Chris Love, President
Angurugu senior secondary boys get crafty with new skills This term the Angurugu senior boys completed a project in the school’s Technical Block, constructing a bench to be used at home. They had to draw a plan, using square grid paper 1. to work out how many people the seat would be used by and the best height and length for comfortable sitting. Once they had their plans they then had to measure and cut out the materials from the timber stack outside the Tech Block.

They then took the timber inside and began converting it into a piece of furniture for home use. First they squared up all the timber ends using a drop/draw saw (image 1). They cut the legs to length using the same saw. Then housings were cut to fit the legs in, for strength and stability (image 2). Once the legs were fitting nice and snug the bench was assembled and screwed together (image 3). A few final touches and the bench was ready for home use. The edges were routed so they were nicely rounded and had no splinters to catch your legs. The whole bench was then sanded and the boys prepared the top for gluing on the vinyl cover. Then... It was time to take it home! Our model worker was Jaydrian. The other students involved in this project were Donny, Gideon, Vinny,and Mitchell. Page 4 This year’s Picnic Day saw the introduction of several new events with the Best Picnic setting, new Fun Run categories Father , Son, Mother, Daughter and first Push Chair, Spear Throwing, and Coconut Critters Creations. The overwhelming feedback was exceptionally positive. The Picnic Day Committee were really interested to try a somewhat different layout to the day this year to maximise shade options and increase peoples comfort throughout the day so they could enjoy of the events and activities that were planned. The feedback we received and from what we could observe, it was very successful in creating a carnival atmosphere and we are looking forward to building on this next year. We really enjoyed tremendous support from community organisations which allowed so many of the activities to run smoothly for longer periods of time and allow access for people to enjoy them. Support groups organisations included Playgroup, BMX Club, CWA, Groote Eylandt Target Shooting Club, Swans FC, Dana Harris, Simon Hartley, St Paul’s Catholic Parish, Deb Grove The results of the survey placed the most popular events as follows 1.Fireworks Display 2. Polynesian Performance group 3. Pig on the Spit 4. Latin Percussion Group 5. Inflatable’s castles and Show Bags together 6. Fun Run I would like to thank all those people who took part in the survey and offered their feedback plus those people who so generously sent in supportive comments and emails. We gained a number of valuable points which will look to incorporate next year. C W A Picnic Day Results The C W A would like to thank all concerned for organising a most enjoyable Picnic Day, where a good time was had by all. We would like to make a few special mentions that helped our part of the day run more efficiently. First and foremost an enormous thank you to the CWA ladies, who worked tirelessly throughout the entire day; your dedication and energy surpasses many. To our contestants; without your entries the CWA section of Picnic Day would not be possible. Thank you and each and every one of you are winners for beginning the race. To our helpers: The Golf Club Donation of the mobile fridge for our contestant’s entries. Mine Maintenance Repairs and maintenance on the mobile fridge, especially on Picnic Day when John Keene needed to rectify a glitch with the generator. (Not the mobile fridge as we believed), thank you John. Well done to the maintenance team; the mobile fridge was used to keep the contestant’s cooking looking beautiful for our judges. Parks & Gardens Setting up and tiding up of the Oval which looked immaculate both before and after completion of Picnic Day. Jake Cockle Supply of an esky filled with ice, to keep drinks for the CWA ladies cold all day. It was well appreciated Jake. Fixed Plant Supplying man power and a truck, to assist with moving display boards and tables, on Picnic Day. Kelvin and Scott were outstanding in the way that they helped out. It was a pleasure to work with them. Nick Kenny Supply of weights to prevent our displays being blown away by the gusty winds that presented themselves on the day. Leaving Eylandt: This month Groote Eylandters said farewell to Carol Bankier-Hermans, Site Manager at the GEBIE Job Shop. We caught up with Carol before she left to find out what is next in store for her and what she has achieved during her time on Eylandt. Echo: How long have you been on Eylandt for? Carol: 12 months Echo: Where to next? Carol: I am going back down to my partner and farm in Tasmania. We have a beautiful property which almost all self sustainable now, growing our own food and rearing animals. Echo: What has been the most positive aspect about living on Groote? Carol: It’s a tropical island! It’s a very beautiful place to live and I have loved the fishing and the community itself. Everyone has been so welcoming here. Of course, where ever you go, it does take some time to get to know people, but it is so friendly here in this small community. Echo: What has been your greatest achievement here on Groote Eylandt? Carol: I think we have achieved some really good outcomes here on Groote at the Job Shop, establishing it as a professional provider for job seekers and employers. We have stepped up with a more pro-active apLeft: Carol bids farewell to the team at the Job Shop
proach and I think we have established a better understanding of employers. We now have 15 work experience projects going and we have built really strong relationships, which are very important to the Job Shop. Echo: What has been the greatest challenge about working on Groote Eylandt? Carol: The lack of other service providers is challenging. On the main land you would have a network of complimentary support programs such as counselling, mental health workers etc, which we do not have over here. It is no ones fault, every rural area faces the same difficulties. Also staffing in such a remote region is always going to be challenging. It makes me sad to leave, as I now have such an awesome team here, doing some great work. Echo: What are you looking forward to about living off-Eylandt the most? Carol: Having four seasons again, seeing family and all my animals. Strangely enough, the cold weather also! Echo: What is the biggest lesson that life on Groote has taught you? Carol: In terms of my work, Groote is not much different, the challenges are always the same in this industry. There are always reasons as to why people are not working, but those reasons are not that different here, people are just people at the end of the day! The other lesson to remember is the importance of having a good team. Here we have a great team … GEMCO, the ALC, GEBIE… all working towards the same goal.
Groote Eylandt is lucky to have this support, as many other regional areas do not. Echo: What is your favourite recreation spot on Eylandt? Carol: You’re going to laugh, but I just love sitting down at the Picnic Area at Alyangula Beach watching the sunset. It’s quiet and so pretty. Also the Umbakumba wharf is a great spot to watch the ocean from. Echo: If you could make one change to employment policy, what would it be? Carol: Here on Groote, for employers to be more willing to look at flexible working arrangements, like part time or job share. It really does make jobs more accessible for women who can balance their family life. Echo: What advice do you have for newcomers to Eylandt? Carol: Go with Groote time! I run at 100 miles an hour but things just take time here, so you have to as well. I still run at 100 miles an hour, but I don’t get frustrated by things anymore. Also to have family date the mail that they send to you. I always seem to get a few letters at once and I’m never sure which news comes first, and which comes after. Finally, to keep your sense of humour about you at ALL times!

Alyangula School Fun Run Students from Alyangula School laced up their running shoes on the 17th August and headed down to Alyangula Beach for their annual Fun Run, raising a total of $5318.70 for the school. Students, teachers and parents enjoyed juice and fresh fruit after the run on the Alyangula Oval. Right: Alyangula school student, Chloe Jones takes a well deserved break. CATS help Close the Gap Representatives from the Geelong CATS returned to Angurugu School to strengthen the partnership, bringing video messages of deadly choices around sport and healthy lifestyles. This time they brought representatives from Target ,who hold social justice as a key agenda item. They presented at assembly and held football drills and games for both girls and boys. Discussions are underway around how they can sustainabley support the Angurugu School Community to increase health and lifestyle outcomes. Principal Kristie Lloyd said that the partnership, now in its fifth year was a great example of schools, sport and corporate organisations working together to benefit children .
Alyangula School upgrades sports facilities Students at Alyangula School have been enjoying their new basket ball courts, which were resurfaced with a synthetic playing surface over the last school holidays. School Principal Joanne Jefferson said the school was also having football and soccer goal posts installed on the oval. She said that the improvements aimed to give students more opportunities to develop their sporting skills and stay active.
