Umbakumba to Angurugu Cycle Challenge hits the road 32 riders including five teams took up the Umbakumba to Angurugu Cycle Challenge on the 14th April. The 50 kilometre race took participants along a mix of paved and dirt road in sticky, muddy conditions. “The conditions were better than previously,” organiser Richard Tomlinson said. “Before we had the paved surface the quickest individual rider was two hours and five minutes compared with this years one hour and forty seven minutes.” The Challenge was held to promote healthy lifestyle
choices in the communities, “It was a really good atmosphere to be amongst,” said Richard. “It was great to see so many teams come together for it including the Police, the Swans Footy Club, Project Futures, the Psycle Mummas and the GEMCO team. I was really impressed by two people participating, Martina Ripcke and Cody Love, completing the entire race by themselves with no build up to the day.” The event has proven so successful that there are plans to hold it annually. “Healthy choices means a healthy life

Purple day promotes Epilepsy awareness
By Taryn Rose
March was Epilepsy awareness month and it culminated on Purple Day on the 26 th. Purple Day was originated by a 12-year-old American girl to raise awareness about epilepsy in her home town and has subsequently become observed internationally. The Student Representative Council (SRC) decided to get behind the initiative and invited ESO’s Jeremy Minahan, Tim McKinlay and Clint Roche to do a presentation at assembly to help educate students about epilepsy and how to react when someone has a seizure. During an informative address, Clint used the apt analogy about a computer freezing and having to reboot to explain what happens to cause a seizure. After demonstrating this to the assembly Tim and Clint then showed students how to keep someone who is having a seizure safe, get help and roll the person into the recovery position. On Purple Day the students dressed in purple with everything from wigs to war-paint and had great fun wearing their bright free dress. Students were asked to bring a gold coin donation and over $100 was raised for Epilepsy Australia. Left: Students at Alyangula School wear purple in support of Epilepsy awareness.

Small things at Angurugu School Angurugu teacher Chris la Rosa has purchased a handheld, digital microscope for his year 6 class. The boys use this to investigate the tiniest of bugs and objects around town. “This classroom resource has opened up a whole new world of exploration for the boys and they delight in each new discovery,” said Chris. The microscope and the associated learning prove once again Angus Kerindun and how engaging science and technology Glen Amagula get up close with technology. can be in the classroom.
Angurugu School and Firbank partnership strengthens Now in its second year, the sister school partnership between Middle Years Girls from Angurugu School and Firbank Grammar continues to strengthen. Angurugu Principal Kristie Lloyd said it was wonderful to see the Angurugu girls confidence grow over the last 2 years through interacting by ipads and exchange visits. The Firbank girls spent Nelissa and a Firbank Grammar student at a week on Groote Eylandt, visiting the sensational Aninidlyakwan Rock Art and the Alyangula. beauty of Leske Pools. The girls also flew to nearby Milyakburra School, the smallest in Ngakwurra Langwa College. Using the ipads as a tool for communication and sharing photos and video clips has enhanced the girls relationships.
Drive Safe training
The Department of Lands and Planning is trialling a Drive Safe NT program. Senior Secondary students and community members from Angurugu and Umbakumba have been participating in the program. They have completed a day of driver training to get their Learners Permit and a day of theory that provided them with the opportunity to gain the essential knowledge of road rules, safe driving practices and safe attitudes. Trainers will return throughout the year to offer driving lessons with an instructor as well as First Aid training. With the new road to Umbakumba under construction, safe driving is a priority on the Eylandt.

The new face of the Alyangula Post Office
There are two times in life... Weekly health and fitness with Rachel Van Oosten I hope you had a great weekend. Mine has been one of highs and lows, I had a fantastic time riding in the Umbakumba to Angurugu bike ride. This was a 45km event to promote healthy living between communities on Groote Eylandt. While we were all covered head to toe in mud, it was a great experience to share with all competitors and especially my riding team mates. The low for me has been news that my Mum is continuing to go struggle in her fight with cancer. It is only a month ago since I last saw her, yet the picture my sister described to me today bares little resemblance to the image I said goodbye to when I last saw her. A big part of my Mum's downward turn has been her inability to eat. It is uncanny that she is enduring this at the same time I am surrounding myself with latest research and evidence on how to fuel our bodies and minds for ultimate health, wellbeing and fitness.
The Alyangula Post Office has a brand new look this month, with new owners and full remodel of the shop. Rob Johnston of Bunbury, WA has taken over the reins, with his daughter, Lee, as a business partner, bringing a breath of fresh air into the store. “Everyone seems to be enjoying the changes and remarking on how bright and airy the new shop is,” Rob said. “We have stripped the entire insides out and replaced and remodelled everything. We also have more Australia Post products available and on display and great new stationary and gift lines. We are still offering all the same great services and Kylie is still here as the ‘hard drive’ of the operation.” Rob, who comes from a building, construction and retail background, and his wife Michele, have lived on Eylandt for only four weeks but are already enjoying the laid back life style. “I love the climate, the fishing, the boating and the opportunities for photography,” Rob said. “And of course, being closer to my two wonderful grandchildren. I haven't caught a sailfish yet, but its right there on my list of things to achieve since I moved to Groote. It’s a great friendly community here and everyone has been really accepting of my wife and I.”
Announcement from Vincent Aviation
I know that the knowledge I have gained will help me, my sister and hundreds of other people like you who have made a decision to change your life by transforming your body, mind and health. If you are still finding yourself in an upward battle to find the will and motivation to make the changes to benefit you, your health & your future then I encourage you to take action today! There are two times in life, now and too late. Here are the “FEW” tips on “healthy eating” to achieve and maintain your ideal body and optimal health. 1. Frequency: Eat more frequently – aim for 6 small meals a day to increase your energy, burning potential and reset your metabolism. If you stop eating or decrease the amount of times you are eating by skipping meals you are slowing your metabolism down. 2. Enough: Ensure you are eating enough food – too many people reduce their intake at the same time they increase exercise, this creates a large gap between energy in vs energy out and creates a metabolic resistance which can make your body transformation goals difficult to achieve and maintain. 3. What: To increase your muscle building potential (which is key for resetting your metabolism) focus on achieving meals that include a mix of low energy carbohydrates (comes out of the ground), first class protein (low fat animal protein) and omega 3 (95% of the population are deficient in omega 3). These tips are based on the latest research and evidence to reset your metabolism through metabolic precision (http://www.metabolicprecision.com). Did you know that any difficulties you may be encountering in losing or keeping weight off is in large part due to your past habits and impact on your metabolism? Keep in mind that when it comes to nutrition what is normal to “us” is not normal to others. If you aren’t getting the results you want, break the insanity cycle, it is time to do something different!

Inspired to action
Several Alyangula women have been inspired help those less fortunate and are lacing up their running shoes in aid of a worthwhile cause. The women will run a half marathon in Cambodia later this year, raising money for the charity Project Futures- a charity dedicated to stopping human sex slave trafficking. As a part of their fundraising for the cause they are selling the autobiography by Somaly Mam, "The Road of Lost Innocence". Somaly Mam is a sex slave survivor and now dedicates her life to rescuing and rehabilitating other victims. She is up for a Humanitarian award this year and the Alyangula women will have the privelege of meeting her when they travel to Cambodia. The cost of the book is $30 and proceeds will go to the housing, educating, counselling and reintegration of these girls. If you would like to purchase a copy please email Sharon Asplin asplins@hotmail.com or call or text 0488180025
Thank you for your support.
Road to Lost Innocence by Somaly Mam review by Louise Kerr Never before have had I read a book like “Road to Lost Innocence”. This life journey of Somaly Mam brought me to pure horror and fear for the female children of our world. The journey Somaly takes us on starts through childhood and her teenage years when she was placed by her carers in a series of extreme home placements and uninvited relationships, all for the cost of a few rice dinners. Every situation Somaly was placed in was impossible to escape with no voice, no rights to freedom and no right to speech, a life beyond torture and rape seemed impossible. Somaly’s journey teaches us how children as young as the age of five have their childhoods ripped out of their hands and are forced into slavery, sex trafficking and marriage to much older men who do as they please with these innocent victims. Read as Somaly explains how she overcomes these horrors to move on and build safe houses for young girls sold to brothels by their parents and/or carers. This is truly an inspirational read that makes you want to stand up and fight for the girls that have been placed in these unthinkable positions.

And the winner
Getting fit, getting motivated & getting it now! This week we were inspired by Kitey, a GEMCO drill and blast crew member and motivated Great Groote Body Challenge participant... “I started 2012 off with the vision, ‘it’s time for a change’. One of my biggest goals was to develop a healthy lifestyle through exercise and correct eating. I took on the GGBC because it's a great way to gain that healthy lifestyle with other people that have the same desire. I traded my dump truck operating job in and joined the drill and blast crew. Taking on this active job was the best thing I could have done. No more night shift means I can train harder and more often. My eating has improved and now working week on week off, I can develop a really good routine. A few of the guys in my crew are also doing it. We all help each other out, by motivating and doing a lot of peer pressuring to get each other into the gym and eating healthy. Having that support is a true motivator.
For me, the biggest thing in being successful is truly not giving up. I realise it doesn't happen over night but I stick with it and I eat clean and train mean. I am organized and I know what I am going to eat during the week. You have to know when you are going to train and JUST DO IT.
Maximus! A big congratulations goes out to Alison
I think body image is really sad. Every and her very handsome pet, Maximus, women is truly beautiful. We are all who was the winner in a recent Echo unique and everyone brings something competition. Maximus is now the proud new owner of a cool Surf Dog collar and special, but sadly not everyone sees it this way. The biggest miss conception is waterproof leash. that we should all be "skinny". I am a real woman and I am going to be totally honest, the biggest thing that hurt me, and It's always stuck at the back of my mind, is that people that called me fat and ugly. It’s not “I eat the advertisement or the magazines, it’s what people have to my face. It’s such a simple thing but I will never forget clean & said it and it has a massive effect on women. People really need I train to think about what they say about each other.
mean”
In my opinion the measure of good health is a positive attitude and felling fantastic. When that alarm goes of at 4am your bouncing out of bed. You want to train hard even after that 12hour shift. You have the desire to fuel your body with fresh healthy food. I haven't dramatically dropped to a size 8 and can walk the beach in that little bikini...wishful thinking… but I feel FANTASTIC. I'm even training for the Tough Mudder Challenge with a few of my friends on September 22nd in Sydney. Tough Mudder events are hardcore 1820km obstacle courses. Consisting of approximately 28 obstacles through step hills, dense bush lands, rives and lakes, it's more than event, it's a way of thinking. This event gives you the opportunity to test your self in every way. Anyone who is keen, is welcome to come along with us. You can check my blog. It’s about my Tough Mudder Journey at www.kiteyriepen.wordpress.com or email me at kite_surfa@hotmail.com or check out the website www.toughmudder.com. If it’s important to you, you will find a way. If it is not important you will find excuses. Kitey getting out-doors and getting active
