Bravo Coy: on patrol in croc country By Major Jamie Heron, OC Bravo Coy

BRAVO Coy, as part of 51st Battalion, The Far North Queensland Regiment has a critical role to play in Australia’s defence capability and a pivotal role within the National Surveillance Plan. Bravo Coy is a reconnaissance and surveillance company that patrols the

Cape, from the Jardine River in the north, to as far south as Kowanyama. Our Area of Operations (AO) also extends into the Gulf of Carpentaria on the West, and the South Pacific Ocean on the East. It is a large and inhospitable tract of land and sea that offers many challenges, but it is also a snapshot of nature at

its best. From the breathtaking sunsets at the end of the day to the enormous prehistoric-like crocodiles that populate the rivers and creeks on both sides of the Cape. Crocodiles are our constant companions when patrolling in the many rivers, creeks and estuaries of Cape York. Although they

are territorial and normally shy away from confrontation, many of the patrols have recorded their boats being hit by a curious croc. Even more exciting are the reports of crocs jumping over the boats when fleeing back into the water from their resting places in the mangroves or river bank. UU continued page 2

Although the patrol did not spot the crocodile that left these prints, its tracks are the biggest the company has ever seen, measuring approximately 36cm long and 24cm across. The soldier standing beside the croc footprint is wearing size 13 boots. Photo: Shaun Seymour.

Patrolling Cape York with Bravo Company UU from page 1

Bravo Coy has three core warfighting roles within its AO. They are: Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Intelligence gathering (R&S); the conduct of Community Engagements (CE), and the conduct of Defence Aid to the Civilian Community (DACC). Reconnaissance and surveillance is our corp capability. Patrolmen in a six-man patrol are capable of detecting, tracking and handing-off targets to other ADF forces or government agencies. Specific information is gathered on numerous types of targets. They include such things as: illegal fishing by Foreign Fishing Vessels FFV; illegal exploitation of natural resources; piracy, violence or robbery at sea; compromise of biosecurity; illegal activity of flora and fauna; and reporting the sightings of ghost nets. The patrolling program that Bravo Company undertakes each year is designed to cover the AO as far as possible. Utilising 4.4 metre tinnies or patrol vehicles we undertake to reach those areas that might attract illegal activities and remain undetected in the remote wilderness. The patrols have a wide range of equipment at their disposal to assist in detecting illegal activities. They can operate at night and in difficult and challenging weather conditions. Each patrol has the ability to remain in the field for up to seven days without requiring a resupply of food, water

or additional equipment. The safety of each patrol is paramount. To this effect each patrol has a medic, and is provided with the best communications systems available. Community Engagement (CE) is a key component to the information gathering and situational awareness for the company. We build capacity through engagement with regional communities, civil authorities and community events. When the roads dry out the company can commence its CE program, CE patrols at Bravo Coy are generally conducted by the regular soldiers with some reserve soldiers in key roles. The patrol gathers information on the aftereffects of the wet season to roads, bridges, causeways and additional infrastructure that support our R&S follow-on activities. We provide presentations and displays to the schools in the region and conduct recruiting whenever possible. Opportunities are afforded to meet with the local elders of each community and talk to about our role in the defence of the Cape and what is offered to the local youths on enlistment. Bravo Coy is equipped to provide defence aid to the civilian community. We can provide manpower and specialist equipment to the Weipa and Napranum Councils in the case of disaster, for a 48-hour period. Our equipment is always ready especially during the storm season.

Meet Angus! After having a very rough and sad start in life, Angus is now a beautiful, loving and healthy dog looking for a very loving and friendly home. He can be very coy at first, but once he settles in, Angus really is a cheeky and affectionate dog. Feel free to come and see them obligation free. For $200.00 you can help save the life of our rescued dogs which covers their 1st round of vaccinations, micro-chipping, registration and desexing. Because the company AO is so vast, at times we utilise other Defence assets to transport us to the start point, or pick us up after a long patrol. One of the best methods is to call on the Navy. Kempton new Member for Cook

New Member for Cook, David Kempton. By Mark Bousen

THE seat of Cook has returned to the Coalition ranks for the first time since 1977 following Saturday’s resounding State election result, with the LNP’s David Kempton the new Member. As at time of press on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 after 19,389 votes or 69.96 per cent of the primary votes had been counted, Mr Kempton had polled 7297 votes or 38.34 per cent of the primary votes, ahead of Mr O’Brien 6165 (32.39 per cent), Katter’s Australian Party’s Lachlan Bensted 4196 (22.05 per cent), Greens’ Riley George 968 (5.09 per cent) and James Evans (One Nation Party) 405 (2.13 per cent). There were 358 informal. After the partial allocation of preferences, Mr Kempton has 8662 (54.14 per cent) and Mr

O’Brien 7336 (45.86 per cent). Bob Scott (1077-1989), Steve Bredhauer (1989-2004) and Jason O’Brien (2004-2012) have held the seat continuously for Labor since Eric Deeral (National) held the seat from 1974-1977. All parties took significant hits with Mr Bensted polling more than 4000 votes. M r O ’ B r i e n ’s p r i m a r y dropped 14.11 per cent from the 2009 figures of 10,465 (46.05 per cent), while the LNP vote dropped 4.07 per cent from 9629 (42.41 per cent). The Greens’ vote dropped from 1510 (6.65 per cent) by 1.56 per cent. Independent Michaelangelo Newie received 1111 (4.89 per cent) in 2009. Mr O’Brien was the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committees in the previous Parliament. Mr Kempton, a lawyer, won the major centres, such as Mareeba, Port Douglas and Mossman. Mr O’Brien topped the voting at the Weipa North booth, with 380 (40.77 per cent) of the vote, ahead of Mr Kempton 275, Mr Bensted 215, Mr Riley 35 and Mr Evans 27. Mr O’Brien also headed the voting in Napranum with

186 (56.19 per cent) from Mr Kempton 84, Mr Bensted 24, Mr Evans 26, Mr Riley 11. However, in Pormpuraaw, Mr Kempton led with 143 (46.13 per cent), from Mr O’Brien 140, Mr Evans 17, Mr Riley 6, Mr Bensted 4. Mr Kempton led in Kowanyama with 204 (45.33 per cent), from Mr O’Brien 174, Mr Bensted 64, Mr Evans 5, Mr Riley 3. Mr O’Brien polled 70 per cent of the vote in Aurukun with 378, from Mr Kempton 135, Mr Evans 14, Mr Bensted 4, Mr Riley 3. The LNP has 78 seats, ALP seven, KAP two, and Independents two. The LNP vote across the state was 49.79 per cent, while the ALP was 26.89 per cent, KAP 11.45 per cent, Greens 7.2 per cent. Mr Kempton said the result was “fantastic. “There was a lot hard work and it is a really good result. “I also was a bit surprised at the extent of the swing across the State; it was greater than we expected; it was a bit of a surprise. Mr Kempton said he would establish principal offices in Mareeba and Thursday Island, with visiting offices in Weipa,

Cooktown and Port Douglas. Mr Kempton said his first priority was to consult with the communities to determine their priorities. “There is only a limited amount of money across the State, and we need to determine the priorities and not waste money on other issues. “Our first goal is to determine the short-term goals and then plan for the longer-term.â€? He listed the priorities across the electorate in Cape York and the Torres Strait included: • The South of Embley mining project in western Cape York; and • Amalgamation of Island councils with the formation of the TSIRC and a turtle/ dugong management plan in the Torres Strait. “A turtle/dugong management plan needs to be looked at, to be run by the communities and not by the Government.â€? Mr Kempton said: “I will have an implicit program of consultation with the communities across the electorate to discuss and decide the best outcomes for them. “I want to be involved with real people and getting their hearts and minds behind our agenda and then there will be some real change,â€? he said.

O’Brien bows out of politics, Bensted vows to stay By Mark Bousen

FORMER Member Jason O’Brien will take a short break and then “get on with my life and be happy. Mr O’Brien served three terms, but has been part of the political process for about 15 years. “I was an electrician before that, but I won’t be going to that; I’ll have to study and undergo some retraining. H o w e v e r, h e h a s ruled out a return to politics.

“I served for four years on the Cairns City Council and eight years in State Parliament. “I’ve had my say and it’s time for someone else to have a turn; I had a good run. Mr O’Brien, 42, said: “It was an honour to serve, and I mean that most sincerely. “It is a rare privilege to be elected; many put their hands up but never get a chance to serve. “Serving as the Member for Cook has

been a special part of my life and I put my heart and soul into it. Mr O’Brien congratulated new Member David Kempton. “I wish David all the best and hope he serves the people, he said. Katter’s Australian Party’s Lachlan Bensted said he was “absolutely happy with the result for the KAP. “To start from where we did six months ago to get a swing of just over 22 per cent at our first

attempt really shows the confidence of the community in the seat of Cook. That also applies to the 11.45 per cent across the State. “It clearly shows we will be a force in upcoming elections. Mr Bensted, 26, says he will continue to be involved in politics. “I’m a local bloke who lives in the electorate (outside Mareeba), and I want to be there for the next time. “I want to thank all

our supporters for their support during the last six months, and having so many people on the ground gives us a lot of confidence. Mr Bensted said he wanted to congratulate Mr Kempton on his victory. “Many people said they were happy to see a young bloke who was interested in the future and is prepared to put his hand up. “I’m not going anywhere.

It’s been a privelage JUST a short note to thank people in the Cook electorate for giving me the great privilege of serving them these last eight years. It has been an honour, and I am proud of what has been achieved across the 40-odd disparate communities I have represented. I would like to particularly thank my loyal party members, and booth workers, for sticking with me and the ALP in the toughest of times for the party. I wish the new Member for Cook David Kempton every success in his new role. Jason O’Brien

Thanks for caring, WTA THE Central Cape Suns Junior Rugby League would really

like to thank the Weipa Town Authority for providing water and power facilities down at the oval. It is very much appreciated and it does mean a lot to us that WTA does care about what is happening in the township. We are excited by the future proceedings that will occur on the oval and are looking forward to being part of this. There has been recent criticism of the WTA, but I can say we have spoken to you guys about the facility, and with the WTA acting very promptly we were granted some help in achieving our goals. Once again, we thank you very much from all the players, officials and families of the junior rugby league. Your help is very much appreciated. Cameron Miller QRL Rugby League Development Officer Cape York

Local government election – April 28, 2012

Brooke brings youthful enthusiasm to the table

Brooke Barton, joint winner of the 2012 Weipa Australia Day Citizen of the Year award, has nominated for WTA election.

BEING born and bred in Cape York and the surrounding Weipa area, Brooke Barton is passionate about the area she calls home, and has called home for the past 28 years. With this passion, Brooke plans to stand for council for the 2012 Weipa Town Authority elections and hopes to have a lasting impact on the way Weipa

is governed in the future. “As one of the youngest candidates to stand for the 2012 Weipa local government elections, I hope to bring youth and enthusiasm to the table, Brook said this week. “Some might think that my youth is a hindrance but I prefer to look at it from a different angle. I will continually challenge and push boundaries, and I will repeatedly ask ‘why?’ and ‘why not?’, and I will constantly be digging my hands into even the tightest of pockets. Brooke said she is also very excited to be learning about the local and state government laws and how they impact our community. “As well as being a well-known and long-standing member of the Weipa community, I also manage a successful business in Weipa and have been heavily involved with many community events and local non-for-profit organisations.

“I believe that through participating in these roles I have developed a strong sense of leadership, along with the ability to be a valuable team member, she said. “My vision for Weipa is one of community betterment and if elected to council, I look forward to working together with all members of the WTA and with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa to improve infrastructure, improve and increase community facilities, and establish Weipa as a diversified and independent township, capable of managing a number of sustainable industries. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the current WTA members for all their hard work and dedication over the past four years. If elected, I look forward to working with all other elected members towards ‘Shaping Weipa today for the Weipa you want tomorrow’.

RED framework a great fit for Weipa RIO Tinto Alcan’s global experience spans more than a century and has broad experience in partnering with communities and stakeholders to deliver a sustainable future. They’ve learned how to leverage their local presence and global capabilities to catalyse greater regional prosperity. It is that experience that Peter McCulkin candidate for Chair of Weipa Town Authority (WTA) hopes the company can bring to Weipa by way of their proven Regional Economic Development (RED) framework. “Rio Tinto’s RED strategy is aimed specifically at contributing to the economic development and diversification of the regions where they

operate across the lifecycle, from development to closure. Their vision for RED is to contribute to the economic and social development of their host communities in order to sustain their long-term growth and diversification, McCulkin said. When local communities are asked what is most important to them, they emphasize their economic development. Rio Tinto do so by engaging and partnering via job creating, business-led initiatives that are focused on sectors where the community can demonstrate a sustainable competitive advantage. “The RED strategy has been rolled around the World, but as yet not at a site in Australia.

I’d like the company to partner with WTA and Chamber of Commerce to identify Weipa as the next site for the RED team and target those areas of our economy with a sustainable competitive advantage, McCulkin added. From a Weipa perspective there is one particular RED Case Study that has caught McCulkins attention. At Anglesey in Wales RED is partnering with government agencies to identify and help create new industries and employment opportunities via alternative uses of Rio Tinto Alcan’s infrastructure and land holdings. An example is using Rio Tinto Alcan’s infrastructure to boost the existing cruise ship industry.

In developing the RED strategy, Rio Tinto works with stakeholders to determine what needs to be done to foster the economic development and diversification of the community; as well as, how and by whom. “The RED framework is a great fit for Weipa. The strategy’s guiding principles relate to identifying and creating new industry and employment opportunities which is not only very good news for Weipa and the Chamber of Commerce but more broadly the Western Cape, McCulkin concluded. Be a film star this weekend

RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa employees, contractors and their families are invited to attend a community pancake brunch on Sunday, April 1 and be involved in the filming of a crowd scene as part of the mine’s ‘Come Home Safely’ campaign. Kicking off at 10am at the Weipa Camping Grounds Fishing Lodge, the participants will be filmed calling out the new campaign slogan ‘Come Home Safely’, which will be used as the final scene in safety videos that will be launched across site and in the community. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations JoAnne Scarini said the ‘Come Home Safely’ campaign uses a new strategy to raise the bar even further when it comes to safety in the Weipa operations. “Instead of us asking our employees to ‘go’ home safely, we want the people most important to our employees – their families - asking their loved ones to ‘Come Home Safely, Ms Scarini said. “We believe involving our families in this campaign will have a real impact in improv-

I get to read out the important site ‘Golden Rules’ and will then get to go to the launch, Jessica said. As well as being part of a unique opportunity in the operation’s history, participants can enjoy a barbecue pancake brunch and kids’ activities. The ‘Come Home Safely’ campaign will be launched across site in mid-April and all families involved will be invited to the launch, to be held in the Performing Arts Complex at Western Cape College, so they can watch their scenes on the big screen.

Have your say on work, health and safety THE framework for work health and safety in the nation for the next decade, the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 was released this week for an eightweek public comment period. The chair of Safe Work Australia, Mr Tom Phillips AM encouraged workers, employers and policy makers across Australia to actively be involved with the development of this strategy.

“All Australians have the right to return home from work safely every day, said Mr Phillips. “I urge all interested Australians to be aware of the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 and consider providing their views on it as it will influence their working lives over the coming decade. The public comment period will be open from Monday, March 26 to Monday, May 21, 2012.

216 Australians died from a work-related injury in 2009-10. The estimated total annual cost of workplace injury, illness and disease is more than $60 billion. In the 2008-09 financial year this equated to 4.8 per cent of Australia’s gross domestic product. “Despite significant improvement in work health and safety in the last 10 years there is still more that can be done to keep our families free from work-related death,

VMR assistance now on user-pay basis LAST weekend the Volunteer Marine Rescue Weipa unit hosted a meeting of units from around the Gulf and Torres Strait. The meeting was one of the most important ever held by the zone. Issues that will affect the way the units operate in this part of the country were discussed and several changes were agreed to by the delegates attending. The units based at Moa and Thursday islands in the Torres Strait along with Weipa, Aurukun, Karumba, Burketown and Mornington Island have been providing marine rescue coverage since 1995. During those years they have performed hundreds of rescues and assisted in a variety of tasks such as resupplying flood-bound towns, medivacs from ships at sea, criminal forensic searches for evidence, to name a few. Unfortunately, all the units are now struggling to stay viable. The small amount of government funding these units receive has not increased since 1998. Meanwhile, the purchase price of vessels has increased, from what was back then around $150,000, to today’s vessels costing in excess of $450,000 to $500,000 to meet survey requirements for offshore rescue operations. Each unit receives around $14,000 per year to operate a base, train crews, provide fuel, maintain a tractor and trailer, vessel maintenance and put away funds towards the next vessel when the current one passes its use-by-date. Weipa skipper, Crazy Pete said the cost for a single refuel of Rescue 1 is $3,000. “The challenge is compounded by boaties that we do assist who do not offer a donation to even cover the cost of fuel for us to go out and get them back to shore. Since 1995 only six people have given a donation towards their rescue. Crazy continued, “The Weipa vessel is now 12 years old, and around two years past its use-by-date, but the unit does not

have anywhere near the funds to replace the vessel. “The vessel is currently down in Cairns getting a major refit costing $160,000. The state association is covering the costs involved to maintain the vessel in survey, but a large slice of that is the Weipa unit’s responsibility. The issue was a main talking point at last weekend’s meeting, and it has been agreed by all units, that requests for assistance will now have to be on a user-pays basis. That translates to a rescue or assist, tasked by the Queensland Police Service will be billed to the police, as is the case at present. Requests for other assistance will come under the user-pays. “It is a regrettable option, but the units can no longer survive on the present status quo said Shane Smith, Weipa unit’s vice president. “When you take into account the costs of vessel insurance, work cover, fuel, the eventual replacement of a vessel, public liability, the government continually requiring crews to be trained to higher and higher levels, and the list goes on and on, it is just not possible to survive. Mr Smith said boaties seemed to be under the impression that crews from Coast Guard and VMR were paid in part or full to maintain the 24/7 coverage around the state. “Nothing could be further from the truth. Volunteers lose work hours, and in some cases income, when they attend training, or during rescue operations. Some of the courses

or rescues can continue for a week or more. “The Weipa community have supported the unit here but units in smaller communities such as Burketown or Mornington Island have no avenues to raise funds within their communities, Mr Smith continued. “Weipa has had support from companies such as Goodline and Rio Tinto, and the members and staff of the Weipa Bowls Club. “There have been several community organisations such as the Weipa Fishing Classic and the Weipa Town Authority that have also assisted the unit in the past. The unit is very grateful to those and others, but it just cannot operate as it has done with the cost of everything going through the roof. The Weipa unit have raised through raffles over the past ten years, enough money to purchase a large shed to store their vessel. Unfortunately the shed components now sit in storage at Evans Landing. The unit’s funds that were to complete the earth works and concreting have now gone towards the refit of Rescue 1. Goodline have generously offered to erect the building as soon as funds can be raised to complete the earth works etc. The Weipa vessel will be back in around three weeks and the Weipa unit wish to thank the Aurukun unit for the use of their vessel while Rescue 1 has been absent.

OVER the past six months Cape York NRM has supported Traditional Owners to set up pilot Indigenous Reference Groups (IRG) in the Coleman, Watson and Olive/ Pascoe River basins in Cape York Peninsula. Work is also underway to establish an IRG for the Ducie River Basin. The role of the IRG is to provide advice through a culturally appropriate framework to the Minister for the Department of Environment and Resource Management relating to any future wild rivers declaration proposal for their specific river basin. The purpose is to provide Traditional Owners with opportunities for their economic aspirations and cultural and natural resource management interests to be better reflected in any future wild river declarations. As well as strengthening information sharing between the Queensland Government and Traditional Owners, the IRG framework also provides Traditional Owners with a forum

to meet, discuss, reach agreement and speak on cultural, natural resource management and other things impacting on the health of their country, and a process to communicate those issues, not only to the Minister and government agencies, but also to non-government organisations and institutions. IRG members are nominated by the members of their clan estates and provide a ‘messenger’ role that has the support of the elders and people of their clan. The ownership of the reference groups lies with the people, who decide on the structure, membership, language name, and if chosen, a distinctive logo and communications materials which can be in their own language. The concept has been embraced by the Traditional Owners of the river basins taking part in the pilot. They recognise the potential of the IRG framework to provide wider benefits and opportunity to deal with other significant land use and land tenure issues and broader social, cultural and economic issues.

Feedback from the members of these IRG’s indicates that the program has already provided opportunities for Traditional Owners to be involved in decision-making processes affecting country and that the initiative is seen to be an effective culturally appropriate tool for all NRM decision-making, and to provide a way for non-indigenous people to better understand Aboriginal connections to land. Traditional Owners have also seen the groups as a way to reduce confusion and ‘consultation fatigue’ in differing government departments and programs and reduce the need for ‘too many meetings’. The interim evaluation of the pilot also found that the IRG communication and engagement processes have served to focus the views of people having direct interests in country ‘on the ground’, and it is hoped that what has been learned from the process will result in more effective communication between Traditional Owners, the Minister, other stakeholders and Indigenous communities on Cape York.

Free digital mailboxes for all Australians IN response to record numbers of Australians moving their lives online, Australia Post today announced a free Australia Post Digital MailBox for every Australian will be launched this year in addition to opening 30 superstores across the country. “The Australia Post Digital MailBox will allow businesses, government and customers to communicate through a secure online portal that can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, wherever they are,” said Australia Post Chairman, David Mortimer. “Just as the traditional letterbox has been a vital part of people’s communications for the past 200 years, we think a personal digital mailbox for every Australian is the perfect complement to the letterbox in this online revolution.” The Australia Post Digital MailBox will allow Australians to: • Connect with service providers they have a relationship with – such as banks, utilities and

government entities. • Receive statements and bills, set reminders and make payments online, using any PC or mobile device, anywhere in the world and at any time. • Use the Australia Post Digital MailBox as a personal digital vault to upload and easily find important documents. The 30 superstores will have a 24-hour zone with vending machines, parcel lockers and self-service terminals, as well as a Harvey World Travel store, an American Express currency exchange outlet and a concierge to help customers. The 24/7 zone will give customers around-theclock access to post and collect parcels, pay for postage, purchase stamps and packaging products, pay bills and use an Australia Post ATM. Supertstores are open in Brisbane and Melbourne with the Cairns superstore due to open this year. You can register for an Australia Post Digital MailBox at auspost.com.au/digital-post

s s e n d a M h c r a M Cape youth aims high for work success LOCAL youth Jay Hudson is one step closer to his dream job on a cattle station with acceptance into Beyond Billabong’s Pre-Employment Program; the only Cape representative successful in this round of twelve placements. Jay’s journey towards his dream job started with the support of local youth organisation Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) Inc with the Get Set For Work program, a Skilling Queenslanders for work initiative, assisting young people to prepare for employment. VPG learning support coordinator Sherri-lee Bosch helped Jay towards realising his goal of working on a cattle station. “Since having helped his grandfather as a child at Billies Lagoon cattle station, Jay has been driven to learn the skills and acquire the knowledge to work on a station, Ms Bosch said. “He was extremely motivated and passionate about taking the steps necessary to gain employment and the Get Set For Work Program is about empowering our young participants to make successful choices, and to fulfil their potential. “In the program we have helped Jay attain a Certificate l in Business, which gives him employability skills such as teamwork, planning and organising, as well as safety at work and first-aid qualifications. In partnership with Merluna Station at Weipa, VPG also organised two weeks of work experience for Jay, to give him a ‘real life’ taste of working on a cattle station. Merluna Station owners Cameron and Michelle MacLean were impressed by Jay, his willing attitude and work ethic, and said he was always happy to ‘give anything a go’. While at Merluna, Jay performed tasks such as welding, fencing, bulldozer operations, mustering, general maintenance and cleaning and slaughtering. “Jay played a major part in all the different types of jobs thrown at him; he was an absolute pleasure to have on the station, Michelle said.

Western Cape Beat WORD on the street is that the barra are biting at Trunding Creek. Most days you will see any number of people trying their luck flicking lures off the bike path on the Western side of the Trunding Creek bridge and it’s good to see. Whilst we have no problem with this activity, we have had a number of near misses reported to us from vehicles heading toward the hospital turning over the painted median strip or double white lines. Please bear in mind this is a blind corner and the $180 and 3 points it will cost you may be the least of your problems should an accident occur. If you want to pop down to the bridge just drive up to the roundabout – it’s only another couple of hundred metres or so further up the road.

Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith

AS police we are more often than not portrayed as the ‘bogeyman’ ready to jump out and ‘lock you up’ or write you a ticket for something. Unlike our Fire and Ambulance Service brethren who are revered for there efforts to rescue and save people, police are remembered for that ticket you got or for taking Uncle Johnny away. But that’s ok that’s what we signed up for, and the fire fighters and ambulance officers have a hectic job. To be terribly honest with you however, writing tickets wasn’t what I joined this job for and I enjoy it even less – it’s the same for most of us. The reason we do it though is because the thought of someone getting hurt or killed as a result of a traffic breach which we’ve turned a blind eye to is too much to bear.

Customer Service: 1800 640 079 Weipa: 07 4069 7309 Cairns: 07 4038 7777

Come in and see us.

The favourite argument when someone is getting a ticket seems to be the ‘haven’t you got anything better to do?’ We do. Unfortunately with over 300 deaths a year on Queensland roads, road safety is a big issue. A prime example is parking around the school. Parking restrictions are not imposed to make your life difficult, they are imposed to enhance the safety of your children and attempt to bring order to a large amount of people arriving at a small area all at once. I assure you the first thing the driver of a vehicle which strikes a child outside the school will say is ‘I didn’t see them – they came from nowhere’. How will you feel when your car is parked in the ‘No Standing’ zone obscuring view of the crossing? You may view a lot of the things police chastise the public for as petty; I wish it could be. Most of what we do however is borne from many years of collective experience seeing the results of particular actions and choices people have made. Yes you may get a ticket or a court appearance but at least you and everyone else are safe. If I need to be the ‘bogeyman’ to achieve this than that is something I can live with. AND, on a final note, Rosie is heading away over the Easter period so you may encounter a closed front door again for different periods between the March 29 to April 10. Rosie tells me she will be here for the morning of this Thursday and the following Monday morning. Please try to go on-line to renew driver’s licenses and change addresses and call police on 4069 9119 if necessary. In a real emergency always dial 000.

TO answer the two questions put forward last week; the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey while people lay their coats and palm branches before him is celebrated today as Palm Sunday. The action that Jesus took to confirm his true mission was shown when he went straight to the Temple, the seat of spiritual power, rather than to the residence of Roman political power. By the way, when Jesus sent for the donkey that was tied up, he had made a plan beforehand for some villagers to have the donkey ready, and that allowed it to be untied and taken by the disciples when secret words were said. These secret words

were also given beforehand. What do you reckon those secret words may have been? Now in Ch 11 verse 11 Jesus had a quick look around inside the Temple but because it was late he went back to Bethany to sleep, at the home of his friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. (Jerusalem was starting to fill up with Jewish believers from all around the world, as the Passover festival was near, a big event). Let’s look at verses 15-19 and we learn in those verses that Jesus saw some things going on there that made him very angry. When he returned to the Temple the next day, he used a whip to flog

the money- changers, and upturned the tables where the exchange of money was going on, and set the birds and animals free. As he finished doing all that, he turned to the people there and made it a point of explaining to them why he did what he did. In verse 17 he said, “…It is written in the Scriptures that God said, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all nations.’ But you have turned it into a hideout for thieves!” (See Isaiah 56 v 7). So what altogether made Jesus so angry? Check it out and we will discuss it next week. The Lord be with you. Rev Michael Connolly

OPINION

Good Life with Jeany Schall

THE solution to losing body fat,and becoming healthier and more energised is all around you. It covers two thirds of the planet, and 70 per cent of your body consists of this essential nutrient. Without it you would look like a sultana rather than a grape. Try drowning your excess weight in nature’s magical weight-loss mineral – guessed it? It is water! I know you have all heard this a thousand times, but don’t roll your eyes! So why did mum and dad, teachers at school, health and safety at work, the PT in the gym and now me tell you to drink more water? Water helps your body metabolise excess fat: You may ask what is metabolism, anyhow? According to the dictionary it is “The chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life. There are many forms of metabolism going on in your body right now, while you’re reading this, and most of these need water to function properly. Let’s have a look at your fat metabolism for example. Fat metabolism encompasses an array of chemical processes involved in fat storage and utilisation. The

relative activity of fat metabolism processes varies, depending on your energy status and needs.(1) One of your liver’s main jobs is to change fat into energy, so you can keep metabolising the fat you eat and live a healthy life. When you drown the whole system in alcohol you will find that the liver has to work overtime, and is therefore not capable of metabolising the fat, so it can’t do its naturally-assigned work. If you allow this to happen it is not only unfair to your liver, but also disadvantageous for your overall health and wellbeing as you will put on excess weight. (2) So, you may have tried to drink more water and ended up having to run to the toilet every 20 minutes. During the ďŹ rst few days of increasing your water intake your body is adjusting to the increased fluid intake and flushing out the water that it has been holding onto and storing in fat and muscle cells for so long in order to stay hydrated enough to function properly. Flushing the system is actually a healthy

and great process. You may ďŹ nd the more water you drink the less your body will hold on to it, and therefore reduce those extra centimetres in your stomach, legs or other fatty tissue. As you continue to give your body all the water it could ask for, it gets rid of what it doesn’t need, which is likely to be toxins your body may have stored over the last few years while you weren’t hydrating it properly. After a few days, or up to a couple of weeks, your body will reach a point where it comes to something I’d like to call “break through pointâ€?, and you will find everything will normalise from there. Water is actually acting as one of the best anti-aging and beauty treatments. Your wrinkles may reduce, you ush away toxins by allowing your liver to do its work again. Once your metabolism is back at its optimum working capacity you will ďŹ nd your energy levels increasing, headaches eliminated and your overall wellbeing increased. If you are trying to reduce weight or your

fat content, drinking a sufficient amount of water will almost certainly reduce your appetite. Give it a go – it will show! So how much water should you drink? We all have different needs but a general rule of thump is to drink one litre of water for every 30kg of your bodyweight. If you are working outside, or in airconditioned ofďŹ ces (which sucks the uid right out of you) may want to increase it to 1.5 litres per 30kg of bodyweight per day. So, if a man weighed 90kg and was working in a workshop in Weipa, he would need to drink at least 4.5 litres of water to maintain all healthy bodily functions. (3) Here are some handy tips: • When waking up make it a ritual to have at least two big glasses of water before anything else! • Have one to two glasses of water before having a soft drink, juice, coffee or tea. • After every time you go to the restroom have a glass of water. • Room temperature water is better than water out of the fridge; it’s easier to drink and won’t upset your stomach. • Always have a bottle of water close by. Make this a one litre bottle of water so you can keep track of how often you reďŹ ll it. • By smoko you should have your one litre bottle refilled for

the second time. By the time you are feeling thirst your body is already ringing the alarm bells. • When you have a beer or two make sure you drink a glass of water or two. This ratio continues: three beers – three glasses of water. I know it gets boring sometimes drinking only water.

Try to have your water with a fresh squeezed lemon and a little bit of natural sweetener, mix it with some juice, or drink carbonated water,  and if you have to – mix it with a tiny bit of cordial or a sports drink. But be aware, sports drinks don’t make you sporty. In fact they have as many sugars and calories as soft drinks. The best natural

On a mission to uncover the past A visit to Cape York last week for English couple Elspeth and John Hardy was far more than a holiday, as they explored Elspeth’s 100-year connection with the area... By Giembra Busmer and Geoff Wharton

Elspeth is the granddaughter of Reverend Robert Hall and Catherine (Kate) Hall, who were assistant missionaries at the Weipa Mission (the old station on Spring Creek) from 1909 to 1914, and she is the first of her family to re-visit the Cape York area. In 2000 Elspeth’s father, the late Reverend Ian Hall and her aunt, the late Mavis Hall, donated to the Cape York Collection a set of diaries dating back to the early 1900s. A second donation, including correspondence and photographs was made in 2008. According to Elspeth her quest to explore her past came about in a “roundabout fashion through her son Richard, who while living in Brisbane in 2007, contacted historian Geoff Wharton in an effort to learn more about his great grandfather. “Richard contacted me and I was able to take him to the Queensland Museum to see artefacts from the Reverend Robert Hall’s time spent on Mornington Island, and the Presbyterian archives which include the sermon and public lessons he had written to qualify as an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church, Geoff said. Elspeth began correspondence with Geoff, and when she and her husband John decided to embark on a “family-history chasing tour the Cape York Collection in Weipa was high on their list of priorities. “It’s so amazing to hold my

grandfather’s original diaries in my hands and to see his handwriting, Elspeth said at the Weipa Library last week. “His record-keeping was just amazing, and there is so much detail, it’s just wonderful. Elspeth and John were welcomed by Hibberd Librarian, Fiona Langsdorf and Geoff to the Collection. According to Geoff, the Hall family collection is one of the “jewels in the crown of the Cape York Collection, as they include the earliest surviving diary records of the Weipa Mission, as well as the record of the establishment of the Mornington Island Mission. “Robert Hall was a talented evangelist and a very practical man, a very hands-on man, as he grew up on the land in New Zealand. He kept incredibly detailed records which capture not only aspects of the history of Weipa but also Mapoon and Mornington Island. “The original diaries, photographs and letters are kept in a safe, in a controlled environment to protect and preserve them, however copies of the diaries are available for the public to view, Mr Wharton said. “When you look at the visitor’s book there is a lot of interest in the Collection’s rich resources, such as the Hall papers and they make fascinating reading. Thanks to Kath Newman’s excellent work as the Collection’s honorary curator, most of the Collection’s books are now on a computer catalogue called Capecat, which is accessible from two of the Library’s main computer terminals. Along with visiting the Cape York

The Hardys were greatly impressed by the work being undertaken by Mapoon Rangers to reduce the terrible impact of ghost nets on marine life on Mapoon’s coastline. Elspeth Hardy presents Steven Hall with a copy of her father’s history of Robert and Catherine Hall’s life at Weipa, Mapoon and Mornington Island. A photo of Elspeth’s grandparents with Weipa’s founding missionaries, Reverend Edwin and Thekla Brown, is on the wall behind.Pictured from left: Amos Njaramba (Acting CEO, Napranum Council), Gladys Hall, John Hardy, Elspeth Hardy (née Hall), Steven Hall, Celia Fletcher, Bronwyn Hall, Iris Hall, Dianne Hall, Gloria Madua.

An excerpt from Robert Halls diary, dated August 1909. Copies of the diaries are available to read at the Hibberd Library’s Cape York Collection.

UU from page 12 Diane Nicholls and the elders guided the Hardys to the old mission site at Mapoon where they were able to visit Charles Busch’s grave and to walk along the shores of Port Musgrave just as Elspeth’s grandparents had done a century before. On Wednesday morning Elspeth and John travelled to Napranum to hold a reunion with members of the Hall family at the Council Chambers. This was an emotional but special moment to witness. Geoff recalled that about twelve years ago he had been given the story of the Napranum Hall family’s surname by the late Mrs Gertrude Motton (née Hall).

Geoff said “Aunty Gertrude explained that when her father was a young man he came into the old Weipa Mission at Spring Creek from his country at Luenh on the north side of the Mission River. At first he was known as Bosin and his brother was Daniel Kwintaggan. Bosin became a skilled sailor and was employed as a crewman on the Presbyterian mission vessels. In 1912 he was one of the sailors on the J.G. Ward during Robert Hall’s first expedition and later Bosin accompanied Hall on the vessel Morning Star to help establish the mission on Mornington in July 1914. Bosin later returned to live at Weipa.” “Reverend Robert Hall passed away on Mornington

Island in October 1917 and Kate took her two children Ian and Mavis back to New Zealand. When Bosin heard about his old companion’s passing, he decided to change his name to Robert Hall in memory of their friendship. The family surname has continued to today.” Elspeth and John were warmly welcomed to Napranum by Steven Hall on behalf of the family and he presented a copy of the Thaynakwith dictionary signed by family members as a memento of the great reunion. Napranum Acting CEO, Amos Njaramba and his staff, kindly hosted a morning tea at the Council Chambers where Elspeth and John were able to see a framed photo of Elspeth’s grandparents, which

had been presented to Council by Comalco in the mid-1980s. During their last few days in Weipa, the Hardys returned to the Collection with Steven Hall to read more of the diaries and were fascinated to learn more about the families and events mentioned by Robert. Elspeth commented that reading the diaries meant so much more now that she and John had been able to meet family descendants at Mapoon and Napranum and to see the country over which her grandparents had travelled. On Saturday morning, the Hardys were farwelled at Weipa airport by Councillor Maryann Coconut (née Hall), Steven Hall and Celia Fletcher – a wonderful conclusion to their families’ centenary reunion.

PUZZLES

CROSSWORD No. 91

SUDOKU No. 91

Your Lucky ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A favourable aspect to Neptune later in the week will help your powers of intuition. You need to make an important choice, and must think through all your options carefully. Your gut instinct will be the best guide. Romance. An intimate discussion with your partner will bring up some secrets. Be prepared for some tough decisions this week.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) At times, your father may seem to be interfering in your affairs. He is only trying to help, but you might still prefer it if he would turn his attentions elsewhere. Romance. The next few days should be an especially good time for romance. Don’t appear to be too eager, however.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

FOR KIDS

You should deal with a problem head-on rather than trying to retreat from it. A colleague who thinks they know the answer will be of little real help: you will have to deal with this issue by yourself. Romance. You will need to focus very clearly on your emotional needs over the next few days. Don’t let practical concerns take up too much of your time.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A meeting with your boss later in the week will help to restore your faith in this person’s sense of fairness. Despite recent misunderstandings between you there is a good chance of a promotion in the not too distant future. Romance. You will need to be ruthlessly honest with your partner. Don’t gloss over an incident which you know has affected them deeply.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) A difficult aspect to Uranus at the beginning of the week may bring an unusual person into your life. Listen to what this new acquaintance has to say, as their advice is backed up by a lot of wisdom. Romance. At times your partner may find you a little too much to handle. Do your best to calm down a little.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 91 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

A powerful aspect to Mars around the middle of the week will help you to push through with a new project. You may be a little too aggressive at times, however, and must accept that other people want to do things at a slower pace. Romance. Don’t change a decision once you have made it. Your partner needs to have some clarity and direction from you at the moment.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A difficult aspect to Jupiter could lead to a spate of bad luck. Make sure that you avoid taking too many risks. Be especially careful about accepting an offer which seems too good to be true. Romance. You will be surprised when someone that you were introduced to several weeks ago wants to get in touch with you. This person obviously hasn’t forgotten you!

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

A friend who has given you some confidential information won’t want you to spread it around. You may not realise quite how important this secret is to them. Romance. A disagreement with your partner won’t be as serious as it seems at the time. A favourable aspect to Mercury later in the week will help you both to communicate a little better.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) Chores will appear out of nowhere this week! Unfortunately there is a lot more to be done than meets the eye. Romance. A sudden change in your relationship may be worrying at first. You will soon see how much it makes sense, however.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Time spent relaxing with friends will help you to forget about a recent upset. You have had a lot on your plate recently and need to put your mind onto other things. Romance. A sudden change in your love-life will come at just the right time. Make the most of the next week!

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness. – Leo Tolstoy Page 18 Western Cape Bulletin March 28, 2012

SOLUTIONS No. 91

You may be feeling a little restless because other people are not quite as “hyped” up as you. It is up to you to motivate everybody else! Romance. Be careful not to be unfaithful to your partner. You should think twice before you do anything which you might regret later.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) You know that you are taking the right course of action. A show of support from your friends will cheer you up and give you the confidence to continue. Romance. A colleague at work may be more interested in you than you first thought. You need to decide if you are going to get involved with this person: if not, you need to be clear about your feelings.

Billy Slater and Paul Gallen are unstoppable HOW good is Billy Slater and Paul Gallen. Billy is the best back in the world while Paul is the best forward in the world. There amazing efforts each week just keep on getting better and better and fans are just sitting on the edge of their seats thinking what are they going to do next. All I can say is Billy just keeps coming up with these amazing tries while Paul is just one hell of a ironman with a V8 motor in a small body producing mindboggling results in hit ups and tackles each game. The Broncos showed how good they are with a very good win over Souths even without the sad loss of exciting young winger Jarahl Yow Yeh. Parramatta are in all sorts

of dramas with the Panthers dishing out a footballing lesson at the foot of the mountains. The Warriors are improving each week with a good win over the financial strickened Titans while the Dragons showed Manly they can match it with the heavyweights. In what I thought was the match of the round the Cowboys were outmuscled by an inspired Paul Gallen Cronulla Sharks which saw the Townsville home crowd go home disappointed. The Storm overpowered the Roosters and are looking the team to beat at the moment. Wayne Bennett’s Newcastle Knights found some form to get over the highly fancied Bulldogs. Monday night footy should

Scotty’s AFL round-up “I’M going to re-arrange the lounge room tomorrow”. Eight words that resonated through the late Friday afternoon peace and quiet, sending shock waves that cut through the relaxing sounds of sleeping children and aching muscles, throwing spanners into all manner of secretly planned works, and just about taking the froth off the top of my first cold beer for the week before my parched and chapped lips could get to it. As innocent to the untrained ear as this sort of statement may seem, when the utterance is of a certain planned nature, in a certain tone that implies “I’ve got things for you to do”, and is partnered with the “don’t even think about going fishing” look in the eye, it is a classic example of “time to do as you’re told”. And so it was for me on the weekend where the inevitable bi-monthly household furniture shuffle was undertaken. Every bloke knows about this, we only wish we could see it

coming. It has to be said that this time it wasn’t too bad, the move actually resulted in an improvement, the line of site between the kitchen sink and the tele has improved no end, and nothing that I hold dear was dismissed to the landfill. Quite amazing really. Found a few bits of missing lego and the odd dried up banana, the remote control for the DVD player we had 3 DVD players ago, and the Deputy can no longer launch himself off the top of the couch onto the dining room table without doing himself a serious mishap. The weekend saw another highlight of the year with the GWS Giants making their debut in Sydney against the Red Legs. I think the show went off quite well, and if you consider the amount of fanfare that was produced throughout the week leading up to the game, I think the power brokers at AFL House would be satisfied. They even claim that Izzy has earned his keep already with one

have been a blockbuster with the Tigers and Raiders battling it out, but the Raiders handed out a lesson in footy to the preseason premiership favourites. My beloved Northern Pride were outclassed by a very determined Easts team in the QLD Cup but I’m sure Coach David Maiden will have them firing for a big home game win against Souths Logan Magpies. Yours truly will be commentating this game so all you great footballing fans in the Cape become a Northern Pride member and tune in on the pride website for this great live coverage and some expert comments . It is the best $5 you will ever spend. I’ve been so excited to be involved with the juniors every

Thursday down at the Weipa footy oval. With young players from Weipa, Mapoon and Napranum participating, it is the most enjoyable 4 hours of my week so come on down and support these youngsters as they deserve every bit of credit they get. I’m tipping a major upset this week in Parramatta upsetting Manly as I do think they’ll have a bit of good fortune going their way. Usually a side will always bounce back after a very dramatized week in turmoil. Spilla’s round five tips: Broncos, Storm, Sharks, Eels, Roosters, Bulldogs, Rabbitohs,Cowboys. Yours in league Spilla

ROUND 1 – Thu, Mar 29 - Sun, Apr 1 THU, MAR 29 Richmond v Carlton @ MCG FRI, MAR 30 Hawthorn v Collingwood @ MCG SAT, MAR 31 Melbourne v Brisbane @ MCG Gold Coast v Adelaide @ Metricon Stadium Fremantle v Geelong @ Pattersons Stadium North Melbourne v Essendon @ Etihad Stadium SUN, APR 1 Western Bulldogs v West Coast Eagles @ Etihad Stadium Port Adelaide v St Kilda @ AAMI Stadium senior game under his belt, and that the return of investment of $6 million has been worth it. I find that hard to believe but it would be interesting to follow the media and commentary around Western Sydney for a few weeks to see how things develop. You really can see the difficulty Falou (and Hunt) face to learn the great game and come through as decent players. How many blokes are decent players, extremely good players for that matter, and never get close to the sort of opportunity that these guys are getting on the back of the marketing dollar. I bet a few guys in the magoos around the country are just a bit peeved at the whole thing. But, good on them, they are giving it a shot. I was there when Hunt kicked his first goal against the Cats last year and I don’t mind saying I was up out of my seat with the rest of the crowd. I hope Izzy fires as best he can and can learn to love playing the game as those of us

lucky enough to be brought up with it have. No surprises with the result on Saturday night, maybe a bit of a surprise at just how competitive the GWS were. Sheeds is a master. Would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the passing of Jim Stynes. A great story in football and seems like he did a lot of great things for others through his personal life also. A lot of people have been impacted by this guy and he has left a strong legacy. Fox Footy is bringing a new dimension to household arguments with 24hrs a day, 7 days a week footy. Bring it on. Hope you have your tips in and loaded for the remainder of round 1. I’ve gone for the Blues, Hawks, Dees, Crows, Dockers, Bombers, Dogs, and Saints. Round 1 is always tough, as you never know how they will come out. All the best for the week. Happy tipping. Maca

Rain fails to dampen squash spirit THE Weipa Squash Club members are not phased by all the rain because squash is an indoor game, unlike the poor tennis diehards, our gain, their loss! When Team Pot challenged Team Schooner, A4 Wayne (as sub for Shay) was easily beaten by Jay Dumbleton (0-3). If A3 Shane Spagnol thought he would have it easy against Delfia (as a sub for Sherie), he gave it a good nudge winning the first game, profoundly losing the second, then rallying back to push the third to long. He easily won the fourth, then Delfia found a second wind, and fought her way to victory in the fifth (2-3). A2 Scott McCahon lost all three games to Grant Foster but the last was forced to a long game so well done Scott (0-3). A1 Dave Edward was in fine form and showed his prowess against Luke Dorsett (3-0). Team Yard Glass struggled to defeat Team Stubby, and despite A4 Dallas Goodwin’s win against Ben Tantau, the game was full of excellent rallies and it was a tough three games for Dallas (3-0). A3 Wendy Long was up and down in the results against Chrisden Russ, with the latter proving victorious in a fantastic sporting game (2-3). A2 Nick Brookes took the first game to warm up while losing, he then took the next two with gusto, however lost the last two convincingly (2-3). A1 Aaron Schleich must have been distracted by the gleam from his shiny new wedding ring when he lost the first game against Chrisden (as sub for Owen), but then he put his mind to the game and won the next three quite convincingly, but with a bit of a scare in the third game. (3-1). Team Pint defeated Team Tallie with the A4 and A3 games each being a tie in scores, as well as games, after the fourth game. A4 Jimmy Baira won the first game quite easily against Amanda McKenzie, then role reversal in the second. A repeat of the scores in the ensuing two games, making their score 22 all, but Amanda took the initiative and won the fifth game (2-3). Ironically A3 Laurie Raleigh lost the first game dismally to Steve Lugsdin, then rallied back a bit, but still lost the second game. Laurie found a burst of energy and took the next two games, at which point these two players were 25 all, but Laurie went on to victory (3-2). A2 Rod Beilby defeated Glen Egan in four games, going down in the first but showing his finesse to rally back and win the next three (3-1). A1 Rod Beilby (as sub for Tom Murray) defeated Ross Hyytinen in three games (3-0).

Luckily many of the B Grade games are being pre-played and this makes the Thursday night fixtures bearable. Team Margarita proved victorious against Pina Colada, beginning with B8 Jess Hall winning the first game, but then losing the next three (1-3). B6 Denica Russ had a tough first game with it going to long, however Denica got her eye in and defeated Aleisha O’Brien in the next two (3-0). B5 Elissa Moody easily won her first game againt Sam O’Neill, then lost the next one, but rallied back to take the last two games (the last one of which could have gone either way) (3-1). B4 Melissa Ghee lost her first game against Patrick Lightart, but then pulled her socks up and stole the next three from him (3-1). B3 Donna O’Neill had her work cut out for her when she won the first two games, but lost the third, against Josh Donnelly, and the fourth went Donna’s way (3-1). B2 Ben Smmith lost to Michael Cridland but not without a fight (0-3); and B1 Adam Blocksidge narrowly defeated Josh Milne in a marathon five games (3-2). Team Martini went down to Team L.I.I.T. (Long Island Iced Tea) commencing with B7 Ruth (yours squashfully) who warmed up enough playing Shaelene

Spiteri by the third game to take only one (1-3). B6 Emilly Jackson lost to Katie Delfs (0-3); Peter Thompson lost to Nicole Dearing (0-3); B5 Sally Parr and Mark Walters alternated wins with Sally finishing on an “up” (3-2), and B2 Randall O’Neill played well to defeat Chris Bienvenu in four games (3-1). B1 Cole Dalton led the team to victory only losing the first game to Steve Moore (3-1). Team Blue Lagoon lost to Team Mojit,o except the first and last matches. B7 Kristie McManus played an adrenalin-pumped game against Adrian Costello (3-0); Luke Mann fought bravely but lost out to Kristie Moran (2-3); and B5 Bianca Borg was an excellent adversary for Ian Newsome but couldn’t quite win (2-3). B4 Emma Thomas played well but couldn’t shake Fiona Newsome (1-3) and B3 Tom Bellinger sadly went down to Joe Buckley (0-3). In the match of the night B1 Justin Hyytinen was winning the first games, but when it seemed that he may get the third Adam Woodhouse found some inner reserve and forged his way through to win the next two. This however was like a red rag to a bull and Justin used his finesse to defeat Adam Woodhouse (3-2). Yours squashfully, Ruth Harris

IT’S been a big week, what with the election and the weather clearing, offering a good opportunity to wet a line. Firstly, let’s hope the new government does a bit more for the greatest recreational sport of our nation. Secondly, the exceptional seas and sunshine have made the ideal invitation to get out on the water, and heaps of anglers have been keeping me very busy in the shop. Grunter are starting to feed, with good catches coming from Napranum, Gongbung and the mouth of Roberts Creek. Usually they show up at Mapoon, but I haven’t had any reports so far. Naturally, Prawn seems to be the best bait, but fresh Mullet slabs are the go for the larger ďŹ sh. I have heard that there are some Prawn about, very small as yet with only the odd few at eating quality. The bay between Hornibrook and Napranum is proving to be holding the most, but it will be another week before they will be worth taking. I was ďŹ shing down around Mangrove Island the other day and witnessed a Prawn ball getting smashed, but not one of the predators were interested in lures. Sunny skies have a habit of producing good blue water ďŹ shing. There is still the odd rain scud about, but it’s well worth putting out a lure or skip Gar as you never know what you might troll up. Down around Thud or Pera usually produce good catches of Mackeral. A bit more to the south around Nine and Twelve Mile is worth the effort if you are looking for more surface action. I tried to get out to Duyfken for a look but just could’t quite get that window of calm seas, maybe next week, because I hear there are some good Tuskies to be had. No goss on Fingermark lately, but they have to be hungry after all the rough weather we have been having, chalk up another to ron. Don’t forget the Weipa BillďŹ sh Bash is to be held between April 16 and 23. Nominations will be taken on April 15 at the Carpentaria Golf Club at 6pm. A calcutta for the top team will also be held after nominations. Costs for the competition will be minimal, probably be around $50 per entrant to cover tripods and the awards night. For more information call Duane on 0429 615 294 or me on 4069 7235 (a.h.) or 0427 783 712. I wasn’t very impressed with what went on at the causeway when it was overowing, but those people will have to live with their conscience I suppose. Catch up with some more of the same next week, cheers,
