FOR the first time in the history of the Weipa Town Authority (WTA) elections for both chairperson and members will be held on April 28, 2012. At the drawing of the election ballot on Monday, April 2,
WTA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ian Pressley said it was very exciting to see so many candidates vying for selection. “There are four candidates for the chairperson position and six elected member candidates,
Mr Pressley said. “It’s fantastic to see so many people put their hand up and I think it’s a sign that the town is starting to mature. Mr Pressley said that although there were 1619 people on the Town of Weipa electoral roll,
when the number of people who had left the area and not changed their roll details were taken into account, there would be around 1400 eligible voters for the April 28 elections. UU continued page 2

Nominations closed for local elections candidates. Each one, two or three vote has equal standing and all will count as one vote towards the “first past the post” result, with three people being elected as WTA members. Outgoing WTA chairperson, Carrie Gay, who attended Monday’s ballot draw commended the candidates on their nominations. “Well done to all of you for standing up and wanting to be heard, and be a voice for Weipa. I think everyone of you would do a fine job and I think we are very, very lucky to have you. Good luck to all of you.” Voting for the WTA elections will take place from 8am to 6pm, on Saturday, April 28 at the Western Cape College resource centre. Pre-voting is available from today for eligible voters at the Weipa Town Authority Office.

As voting is not compulsory in the WTA elections, Mr Pressley asked candidates to encourage people to cast their vote. “In the 2004 election 25 per cent of the people on the Weipa electoral roll voted, and in 2008 only 12 per cent voted,” he told the candidates. “The interest you have all shown in running for election is outstanding, and now it’s up to you to gee-up the community and get them along to vote.” There will be two ballot papers in this year’s election, which will be decided on a “first past the post” basis. Voters must indicate their chairperson preference with the number one, in one box only. There are three member positions available so voters can preference their choices on the members ballot paper by placing the numbers one, two and three against their chosen

o Cyclone HELLO, who’s this? Slow down, I’m writing as fast as I can. Damn, wait a minute. I’ve just knocked the bedside light over. I hope you realise what time it is? This had better be something important, or you’ll be charged with wasting police time. Now, what’s your name again? Look, if you’re not going to speak slowly, I’m going to hang
up. Right, that’s better. Mary Smith. That’s your real name, I hope. There are penalties for giving incorrect information. Next, what’s your address? All in good time. If I don’t fill my form in correctly, we won’t make any progress at all. About 10 kilometres south of Musgrave will not do. We want your postal address. No, not a Post Office box. Your proper

address, where the postman delivers your mail. Good, that wasn’t so difficult, was it? Now, your date of birth, please. 1943? Are you sure? That means you’re very old. Is there anyone younger I can talk to? Now, what is the nature of your query? You ran into a cow? Are you sure? You mean the cow was just wandering on the road? That doesn’t sound very likely. Are you sure it was not just a wallaby? Very well, there’s no need to take that tone of voice with me. Now this is important. Was the cow hurt? Well, yes, I suppose hitting it with your Toyota would hurt a little. Right, that seems clear enough. In just a moment I’m going to transfer your call to the
RSPCA. They won’t be open, of course, but you can explain your situation to their answer phone and they will deal with it as soon as they come into the office on Monday. No, what am I talking about? I forgot the long weekend. They’ll get to you on Tuesday. Why are you shouting? I haven’t finished yet. On Monday morning, sorry Tuesday morning, you must report to the Sheridan St police station in Cairns and bring your tooth brush. What? You’ve been hurt? Did the cow attack you after you hit it? Well, I suppose the bang on the head is not important but a broken leg is inconvenient. I’d better transfer you to Bundaberg Police. They might know what to do...

LETTER / NEWS Letter to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au
Take five minutes to vote on April 28 THE Weipa Town Authority election campaign is now officially underway. What is impressive with these 2012 Elections is the number of candidates that have declared their interest in a leadership role within our town. Well done to them all. In the coming three weeks you will learn more about the views of each candidate on a myriad of issues, from fire trucks to fishing closures.
Please take time to closely evaluate what you read and hear. Voting in our election is not compulsory, unlike our neighbouring towns and Shires, but this 2012 election, above any before it, must provide a mandate for change within our town. As the former Labour Member for Cook Jason O’Brien wrote recently, “bring Weipa into the 21st Century. All eligible voters are encouraged to take the five minutes to vote on April 28. The newly elected members of the WTA will be taking Weipa to new heights and need
to know that the majority of voters in Weipa actually care. I am hoping that part of that collective vision will be to place Weipa first in all its deliberations in the coming years. My views have been highlighted over the past month, and received a range of responses. Be assured that the future of the WTA relies heavily on effective collaboration with Rio Tinto, and to suggest otherwise is not understanding of the current funding and governance arrangements. That is not to say that there cannot be vast improvements, several of which I have outlined over the past month.
I will be campaigning over the next three weeks with a simple message; that the WTA post-April 28 needs to focus on three key deliverables; ongoing enhancement to Weipa’s liveability, drive sustainable diversification to Weipa’s economy, and negotiate a transitional governance framework for Weipa. These deliverables relate directly to the recently released Weipa Community Plan. Don’t just hope for a better Weipa, vote for one on April 28.

Annual valuations released for Weipa Town Authority area QUEENSLAND’S ValuerGeneral last week released the annual land valuations for properties in the Weipa Town Authority area. Valuer-General Neil Bray said the Weipa Town Authority area’s land values had increased by 10.3 per cent overall since the last valuation issued in 2011. “The valuations provide a snapshot of land values on October 1 2011,” Mr Bray said. “The median value of residential land in all suburbs within Weipa increased from $136,000 to $150,000. “Generally the values of multi-unit, industrial, commercial and rural residential land also
increased by 10 per cent.” Mr Bray said it was important that landowners realised that valuation notices were not rate notices. “Rates are set under the Local Government Act 2009 by local government authorities,” Mr Bray said. “The setting of rates is based on a number of factors – valuations are only one of those factors.” Mr Bray said landowners who believe their valuation to be incorrect, and can provide information to support this, can lodge an objection to their valuation with the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) by May 28, 2012.
The list of Queensland’s statutory land valuations (valuation listing) in addition to market tables for major residential localities can be viewed online at www. derm.qld.gov.au. A hard copy of the valuation list for the local government area can be viewed at the Weipa Town Office, Hibberd Centre, Rocky Point, Weipa during normal business hours. This information is available for viewing until June 26, 2012. For more information including fact sheets, questions and answers, an objection kit including forms and a step-by-step guide, visit www.derm.qld.gov. au or call 1300 664 217.

EASTER Kempton hits the ground running PUBLIC HOLIDAYS 2012 RECENTLY elected as the Member for Cook, David Kempton made his first official visit to Weipa and Napranum late last week. It was while in Weipa, he learned of his appointment to the cabinet position of Assistant Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs. Announcing Mr Kempton’s appointment, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman said “For the past 25 years David Kempton has worked as a lawyer in Cape York and rural Queensland. He has been tireless in his battle against the erosion of property and personal rights by successive Labor governments and bureaucrats - which drove him to run for Parliament. “David has a very strong association with the people of Cook through his work, business and former pastoral interest in the north and I look forward to his strong contribution as Assistant Minister. Mr Kempton said his appointment would “bring in a new era of community responsibility and opportunity for self determination. While in the area Mr Kempton spent time with the Napranum community, assisting to finalise and provide support for the Napranum 10-year community plan, five-year corporate plan and one-year operational plan. “This is going to forge a new community friendship between Napranum, Rio Tinto, Weipa Town Authority and governments. “I am really excited to be a part of this, Mr Kempton said. Mr Kempton is currently negotiating a visiting office in Weipa and intends to visit the town on a regular basis. “There are a lot of

issues around the town including accommodation and the cost of land and I will be lending as much support as I can to the South of Embley project, he said. “I would also like to get a community forum going so I can discuss regularly with residents the issues in the town. Mr Kempton said current Wild Rivers legislation would be repealed and replaced with comprehensive bio-regional management plans, which would offer
stewardship to those who own the land to look after it, rather than just locking it up. “The plans will be particular to a certain region, and we will engage with landholders, Traditional Owners and mines involved in that region. This is not a ‘one-fits-all’ approach to the whole of Cape York. “We will also increase the Ranger program. “I’m on the ground running and I intend to be very active in Cape York communities.
Ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability have their say AUSTRALIA’S first national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability was launched in Sydney this week by the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers, Jan McLucas. Senator McLucas said the Australian Government is investing $163,000 in ongoing annual funding as well as $10,000 for the launch of the new peak body known as the First Peoples Disability Network (Australia). “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are about twice as likely as non-Indigenous people to have a disability or long-term health condition, Senator McLucas said. “It is essential that the unique needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability have strong representation, particularly as we
prepare for reform in the way we deliver disability care and support in Australia. “As we progress major national reforms like the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the National Disability Strategy, we need to make sure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are part of the discussion. The Network will work as a conduit between the Australian Government and its members on issues and policies affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability and their communities. They will bring people with disability together to share their unique experiences, provide support, and be a voice for positive change on issues of concern. “The Australian Government is committed to supporting people with disability and their
families and carers to share in the same opportunities as all Australians, and to participate fully in the economy and community life. “That’s why we have started work on building the foundation of a National Disability Insurance Scheme that will give people with disability, their family and their carers, the kind of support they are crying out for. “It will help overcome ‘double disadvantage’ Aboriginal Australians face in trying to get a fair go. “An NDIS would insure all Australians against the cost of care and support for significant disability, and ensure people don’t miss out on support because they live in remote or regional areas or because they come from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Mr Potter said. “Safety has to be our number one priority. Mr Potter said local road users could be granted permits to travel on closed Cape York roads, subject to strict
safety conditions. “We understand some essential travel is necessary and the department will assess load limit permit applications on an individual basis,â€? he said. “Once we know the full extent of damage we can begin works to repair the road surface and impacted crossings and culverts. We will not open the road until it is safe to do so.â€? He said anyone planning to travel over the extended Easter weekend should check current road conditions and closures by visiting 131940. qld.gov.au or by calling 13 19 40 or follow us on twitter:@131940 FNNQ. For further information on obtaining load limit permits, please contact the road operations ofďŹ cer on 4050 5576 between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
Appeal for more Indigenous voters WHILE celebrating 50 years since Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians won the right to vote in federal elections, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has renewed efforts to encourage more Indigenous Australians to enrol and vote. The Louder than one voice DVD outlines the history of the Indigenous vote and includes interviews with Indigenous Australians about the values of voting. The animation and six case studies will be available to be viewed via the AEC YouTube channel www. youtube.com/aecgovau Some estimates indicate that less than 50 per cent of eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may be enrolled to vote. Electoral Commissioner Ed Killesteyn said the electoral milestone provides an opportunity to draw attention to the ongoing challenge of ensuring all Australians have the chance to exercise a key democratic right and responsibility ─ to enrol to vote. “The 50th anniversary of the right of Indigenous Australians to enrol and vote is a very significant anniversary, Mr Killesteyn said. “The AEC is marking this anniversary through several
initiatives under the banner of its Indigenous Electoral Participation Program (IEPP), including the production of the Louder than one voice DVD.â€? Sandra Pilot is a Torres Strait Islander woman from Cairns whose story of voting appears in the DVD. She strongly believes in the impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can have on policies affecting their lives by enrolling to vote. “I’m a mother with three children. From where I have come from and to see all the changes in policy that have emerged such as ABSTUDY to help our kids in schools – Indigenous policies are a direct result of the politicians that we vote for. “These days, we have more of an awareness of our rights as Indigenous people. Rights are political.â€? The IEPP currently employs 25 Field OfďŹ cers across the country, 18 of whom are Indigenous Australians whose role it is to building electoral capacity particularly in remote communities. Australian citizens aged 18 years or over can enrol to vote, change their address or check their enrolment details by going to the AEC website at www. aec.gov.au
Sandra Pilot appears on the “Louder than one voice DVD and strongly believes in the impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can have on policies affecting their lives by enrolling to vote.

Water Police target new regulations over Easter WATER Police from across the state will target new regulations which came into effect this year as part of their Easter operations on Queensland waterways. Crews from the 11 Water Police establishments from Thursday Island to the Gold Coast will be out in force conducting RBT operations, enforcing marine regulations and conducting safety equipment audits over the holiday period. State Water Police Coor-
dinator Inspector David Kolb said Easter was traditionally a popular time on the water. “Easter is always a busy time with school holidays coinciding with the last opportunity to enjoy warm weather before winter,” Inspector Kolb said. Inspector Kolb said officers will be paying particular attention to new stowage requirements for safety equipment and new laws for personal water crafts. “New laws which came into effect this year include
personal water crafts such as jet skis maintaining a 30-metre distance from other moving vessels whenever they are travelling at more than 10 knots,” he said. Boaties are being urged to take basic precautions before venturing out on the water. “This includes checking the boat’s battery, a basic mechanical inspection especially when the boat may not have been used for some time and logging on and off with a volunteer marine organisation,” he said.

DIABETES AWARENESS Got Suga makes a difference to Queensland communities By Michelle Trute, CEO Diabetes Australia –Queensland
IN some remote Aboriginal communities in Queensland, the rates of type 2 diabetes hit 60 per cent, so Diabetes Queensland had to come up with new ways to pass on vital health messages. Problems with isolation, difficulties with writing and speaking English, a lack of transport and money problems all present barriers which work against those living in isolated rural communities having access to the same medical services taken for granted elsewhere. It adds up to people living in the bush being more affected by type 2 diabetes. WIth some help from Board Member Dr Mick Adams Diabetes Queensland came up with the Got Suga program. It uses storytelling and role playing to make new solutions to old problems seem possible and it promotes change in communities where the complications of diabetes are a common cause of death. Actor and writer Anthony Newcastle is relishing the chance to make a difference with the Got Suga program which he helped develop. Got Suga is conducted over
two days and is not presented in a conventional classroom and teacher format. It involves the participants in working out solutions to their problems and is very engaging. The program is led by Anthony, who is the manager of Natjul Indigenous Performing Arts, and other actors from his company, who use the theatre sessions and group participation to generate discussions and empower the participants to come up with answers. “We don’t go to present an education program. It’s not a classroom. It’s about empowerment to realise change in these communities,” Anthony said. Pilot programs run last year met with solid success. One of the participants Corniliess Richards, from Yarrabah, said the program delivered its message well. “We thought we knew a lot but we learnt a lot here because of the way it was presented,” Corniliess said. Anthony said Got Suga gave “a voice to the unheard”. “The results always surprise us,” he said. Anthony leads his Natjul team

in a number of similar programs, working predominantly with Aboriginal communities. “We tend to do the difficult topics. Our programs cover the hard topics – domestic violence and other types of violence, disengaged youth, cyber bullying and diabetes,” he said. “We call it theatre for change.” The format presents a new approach for diabetes programs. The theatre component enables participants to role play better outcomes for themselves. The program takes two days with the second day involving training for local health workers and medical service staff to deliver ongoing help and services, so there is backup support. Anthony presents the program with Roxanne McDonald, whom he describes as the most talented actor in Australia.

Meet an IPS team member Hello my name is Paul Fry and I am 37 years old. I grew up on the Sunshine Coast with a family that adopted me and I have an older sister who has worked for Rio Tinto in their Brisbane office. I recently met Danny Hudson my birth father from Aurukun. We met at Batavia Downs cattle station where I was working as a cattle hand for my aunty and uncle, Karen and Graham Robinson. I was born in Cairns hospital and was adopted at four months. I grew up as a surfer on the Sunshine Coast. I am quite excited about doing the IPS course as I am currently
trying to get a job in the mines as a truck driver or administration assistant, and I would be very happy to be a full-time employee with Rio Tinto. I have run my own photography business and am planning to keep this business going. I have many goals for the future, but my main priority now is to work hard, learn, face new challenges, meet the local community, gain an understanding of the workplace and complete the tasks that have been set for me by IPS to assist me in obtaining a full-time role with Rio Tinto.

Western Cape Beat Easter road safety campaign
Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith
It’s that time of year - the Easter bunny is out to visit all the kiddies and some of the adults. I have noticed that the chocolate eggs are flowing at Woolworths and everyone is buying their fair share for this year’s Easter. From the Police side of things, this is a very important and busy time of year as it appears that people tend to go into holiday mode and forget about road safety. Public holidays and school holidays are known for having a large number of major accidents resulting in injuries, or sometimes fatalities throughout the state. People need to remember the Fatal Four, speeding, drink and drug driving, failing to wear seatbelts and driving while tired. The Weipa Police will be out in force during this period to prevent any accidents which may occur. Please remember to pull over if you are tired, even if you’re not travelling very far. Slow down, wear a seatbelt and don’t drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Everyone who is caught will be charged or fined for the relevant offences. If you are travelling away for the holidays, please take it easy on the road and remember that getting there safe and sound is better than losing a family member. Happy Easter everyone!☺

The Napranum Council has notified Police that the Pennyfather area has been officially closed, due to its poor condition, and Rio Tinto has put a road closed sign up. If anyone is caught in the area they will be fined for the offence. The road is closed for your own safety and to prevent any body from further destroying the road. This also means even if you have a 4WD, like 90 per cent of the people in Weipa do, you are not to drive your vehicle on the road.
Vyces I have also noticed that a large number of people are still heading to Vyces for a swim. I will remind everyone that a large number of people took time out of their busy lives to plant some sapling trees to rejuvenate the bushland which has been damaged by people driving their 4WDs closer to the swimming hole. If you are taking a picnic down to the swimming hole PLEASE park you car in the designated parking area and walk along the provided tracks, to allow these trees to reach their full potential. I am sure all the volunteers will appreciate your support.

that if you have a barbecue at any public area PLEASE take your rubbish with you. If you can spare 10 minutes to pick some of the other rubbish up that would also be much appreciated. We have had a large number of complaints regarding this matter, and people will now be sent to Court for littering. So do the right thing, and don’t destroy what you came to enjoy.
When Jesus walked into the Temple he saw something going on in there that made him very angry. What was it that caused him to be so upset? Well, the temple grounds were huge and rectanglular, had different sections for different activities, and the closer you went into the centre of the Temple, the holier it became. The Outer Court is called the Court of the Gentiles, to the very inner part of the Temple that is called the Court of the Priests. The place where Jesus flogged the traders was the Court of the Gentiles, a place where Gentiles could go, and no further, or they would have been killed, with full approval of the Roman authorities. Animals that were sacrificed were cattle, sheep,
and doves but because many people travelled over long distances to get to Jerusalem for the weeklong Passover (1 day) and Feast of unleavened Bread (The rest of the week), it was easier to buy their sacrifice locally. Then because the only money that could be used to buy them, and to pay the Temple tax had to be local money, the money they brought from different countries had to be changed into local money. So if you brought in money worth say $5 to your country and it could buy 10 Temple dollars they would only give you 5 Temple dollars, pocketing the rest. (That’s called money exchange and you can see offices like these in most good size towns and cities today, but of course their exchange rate would be
honestly done). Doves were sold for those who were very poor and could not afford sheep or bullock meat, and if they should be say $1 a bird, the Temple merchants would sell them for $2 a bird, a 100% profit from poor people! No wonder the Lord was very angry, as all this was going on in grounds that were supposed to be holy. It’s also not hard to imagine that if the Temple merchants were doing good business with the sheep and cattle, they would give first preference for rooms in the grounds for them rather than for Gentile worshippers that come a long way to honour God. Do you reckon this story relates to Christians in 1 Corinthians Ch 6 v 18-20? Jesus cares. Rev Michael Connolly.

SCOOP The Newshound Sniffing out the stories about our four-legged friends... I DON’T know about the rest of you pets out there but my mum and dad sometimes eat something called chocolate, and although they really seem to enjoy eating it, they refuse to share it with me. It smells delicious, and I’d really like to try it, but apparently chocolate is very bad for pets, and can even be fatal. With what the humans call “Easter coming up it seems there will be more chocolate around than usual, so I thought I’d better let you know why it should be left to the humans. There are substances in chocolate which are safe for humans to consume but they can affect or kill dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and other pets. The cocoa in chocolate contains a natural compound called theobromine, which is a potent, potentially lethal toxin for pets. Unlike humans, we pets can’t metabolise these chemicals properly and are susceptible to the toxic effects. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive thirst and urination, rapid breathing, seizures, increased heart rate, coma or even death, and may not even appear for 24 hours. The effect the chocolate has depends on the quantity consumed and the size of the animal, but humans should avoid giving us even small amounts of chocolate, no matter how good the “what about me? face is we put on. And don’t be tempted to follow around those little humans, known as children, who as we know are easy targets for sweet treats. Mums and dads who are planning Easter egg hunts for these small humans should make sure they hide the chocolate eggs somewhere out of paws reach. If pet owners suspect chocolate poisoning in their animal, they should contact their local veterinarian immediately. Guess it’s Schmackos for me and my K9 mum, Crispy this Easter. My mum and dad quite often go “fishing and I was very excited when they took me along on one of these trips last week. I was a bit concerned that something had happened to the refrigerator, or the pantry at home, as they kept saying they were going to “catch a feed. They had a big box full of ice and smelly stuff they called bait, and despite my best efforts they would neither let me eat the bait or roll in it. Instead, they kept putting it on the end of these long sticks and throwing it in the water I wasn’t allowed to swim in. I was beginning to wonder why they’d bought me along on this fishing trip at all, when my mum produced a pig’s ear (my favourite thing) which I covered in sand before eating, and it was delicious! It was fun to be out and about with my humans, but I must admit I was awfully glad to see the ‘fridge and pantry still contained an abundance of dog food on our return, as there was no sign of “a feed at the fishing spot. PAWS UP to the people who supported the CAPS Easter bake sale last Saturday. Pity I wasn’t allowed to eat any of the tasty treats!
Good Life with Jeany Schall
Easter and the eggs AS Easter approaches we are all challenged again, and are confronted with chocolate and lollies left right and centre. When you walk into your local supermarket there is a whole section of chocolate. Heaven for some, hell for others. But when you overdose on sweets, your pancreas
has to work overtime - it has to produce large amounts of insulin, causing the body to build up a resistance to sugar. You will then crave even more sugar which can lead to weight gain, mood swing and worst case scenario to diabetes, especially if you are not exercising. I have an incredible sweet
tooth ( I guess that’s how I became a personal trainer) and will make a strong effort not to kill one Lindt Easter bunny this year. So what are our alternatives? Well, the healthiest way would be to have real organic eggs instead of the chocolate egg. You could also, like me, make your own healthy chocolate. It is much easier than you think. All you need is some raw cocoa, cocoa butter and/or coconut oil, honey or another sugar substitute, vanilla, some chocolate moulds and love. So what makes this chocolate so healthy? Raw cocoa is one of the best sources of magnesium which relieves your hard working body from stress
and helps it heal. It contains large amounts of flavonoids, which act as powerful antioxidants and can lower blood pressure. Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids that help boost the body’s immune system and protect against viruses and bacteria. Honey has been used as a powerful healing food for thousands of years and offers antiseptic, antioxidant and cleansing properties for our body and health. The cocktail of these three ingredients, along with the soft taste of vanilla, turns your Easter chocolate into a health supplement.
Healthy homemade Easter chocolate Ingredients • 75 gram cocoa butter • 25 gram cup virgin coconut oil • 45 gram (raw) organic cocoa powder • 2 tbsp Organic honey for sweetening. Agave syrup, stevia or nativa sweetener is okay too, just remember these are much sweeter than sugar. • 1 – 2 Vanilla Beans (depending on taste and sweetness) • 1 tbsp of lecithin powder Preparation Melt cocoa butter and oil in a pot, add cocoa powder and mix well. Make sure it is not boiling, usually 35 - 50C degrees is enough. Scrape out seeds from vanilla pod and add to the mixture. Add honey and while stirring, add the lecithin and pour into moulds while still hot.
You can add goji berries, shredded coconut, or combine the two (my favourite), nuts or whatever you like to vary your chocolate with. Throw in the freezer for a couple of hours and it is done. Enjoy in moderation with good friends or family. I can assure you your friends will be astonished by how delicious real chocolate is! Please note that this chocolate melts a lot easier than the chocolate you buy at the store, due to the fact that there are less emulsifiers in your homemade chocolates. So when you head out camping this weekend, keep them in the esky. If you want extra creamy chocolate you may temper the chocolate or make them in a cooking utensil like the thermo chef, thermo mix and or vitamix if you own one. The more love and effort put into the chocolate
by you mixing and stirring and breaking down the ingredients the smoother it becomes.

The fight is on for rugby league supremecy AFTER five rounds of NRL I think all teams are just finding form, however Storm and the Broncos seem to be the teams to beat. The Titans, Eels and Tigers are on struggle street, but I’m sure they’ll come to life sooner, rather than later. Round five has produced some interesting results once again, with the Broncos just beating the Dragons, and Storm too classy for the Knights. On Saturday the Eels upset Manly, as I predicted, while the Sharks continued their good winning form by overcoming the Panthers in a thriller. The Roosters and the Warriors
battled it out and the Roosters came away with a solid win. The Bulldogs were too strong for the woeful Titans, while the Rabbitohs produced a miracle comeback to beat the Tigers. Monday night’s game saw Johnathan Thurston star for the Cowboys who outclassed the Raiders 22-6. The Northern Pride battled it out with Souths Logan Magpies on Saturday night in Cairns, and went down as the Magpies had a better day than the Pride. This Thursday the Pride travel to Rockhampton and I’m sure they will bounce back in style with a convincing win against the Capras. Rugby league is building into
Bald Eagle steps into the fore LATE Monday arvo and I got the call up. “Top Cat calling the Bald Eagle...hands” , as the handball hit its target – me. It was the moment I had been waiting for since the shocking defeat of the West Coast Eagles by the now reigning premiers the Geelong Cats in last year’s finals, which dashed my hopes of the Eagles crack at another holy grail of football. So the Top Cat wanted a favour, and this week you have ended up with yours truly to give a commentary on what would have to have be one of the greatest first rounds of AFL football I have seen in years. Now, I may not have won a best and fairest, but as a young fella I was known as one of the best orange cutters, bench, back-pocket players in a small club called Parkside, in the Greater Western League in Melbourne. That was back in the days when oranges were oranges and we didn’t have things like Powerade. I was also very fortunate to play three seasons of football with my son in the east Kimberley league in Kununurra many years ago. So it’s without doubt I come
fully credentialed and ready to step into the furore. Enough about me...let’s talk footy with some of the highlights of the round. It was not a bad start with the second game of the round on Thursday night with Richmond v Carlton. The Blues looked to be in trouble as Richmond gained momentum heading into the last quarter, however Carlton took control of the game in the last quarter to come home with the four points. The highlights for me were Mathew Kreuzer, who dominated the ruck, and Ivan Maric for his commitment and endeavour in bringing back the mullet. To a bloke like me that means something. Friday was even better with one of the clashes of the round, Hawthorn v Collingwood in front of a crowd of over 78,000 fans at the MCG. Buddy made his presence felt up forward, kicking five goals and pushed up the ground and played like a midfielder, showing that you ain’t seen nothing yet from the big fella. Rioli took one of the screamers of the year and finished the game in style to run over the Magpies. Unfortunate I thought, that Melbourne
one hell of a force in Weipa and the local competition will be under way on Saturday, April 14, so get on down to the footy oval and you will see some great games of men’s and women’s footy. Recently the juniors in Weipa received some new jerseys and I must say a big thank you to Kath and John Kennedy from Goodline who always support the juniors with great sponsorship. The playing outfits look so good, and these youngsters are wearing the jumpers with pride. Round 6 in the NRL will have some entertaining games, but the match of the round will be between the Sharks and the Dragons at Toyota Park in
Cronulla. The game is a battle of the beaches and I think the Dragons will just come away with a Jamie Soward field goal in extra time. Spilla’s round five tips: Bulldogs, Tigers, Titans, Dragons, Raiders, Knights, Cowboys and Sea Eagles. Yours in league Spilla

couldn’t quite get there against the Lions after an emotional week following the passing of Jimmy Stynes. The Lions’ dominance during the third quarter was exemplified by their 22 uncontested marks to seven. They ended up with a massive 100 more uncontested possessions. Saturday night saw the reigning premiers hit the deck in what was one of the best games of the round with some inspiring passages of play from both sides. Ballantyne got under the skin of Scarlett which resulted in a bit of biffo and is set to cost Scarlet dearly. Mathew Pavlich sealed the game with a kick off the ground in the dying minutes, sealing the fate of the Cats. Geelong coach Chris Scott said the pressure of the match had led to “a bit of niggle”, but his team only had itself to blame for a slow start to the match, that saw Fremantle burst 30 points clear after 12 minutes. It seemed Saturday night was the night of thrillers as luck found the Bombers after the siren when the Roos couldn’t convert a set shot on goals and cost them the game. ing to be the most influential midfielder on the ground. Of course I saved the best to last with the mighty West Coast Eagles running over the top of the Western Bulldogs in a convincing win. The Bulldogs were simply outclassed, with the likes of big Nick Naitanui who dominated the ruck and Josh Kennedy who kicked four goals in the first quarter and went on to bag seven for the game. Lynch, Cox and Priddis between them took control of the centre. All in all they are on track for the big day in September. I have booked my flight, all I need is the Top Cat to approve my leave. It might be a hard pill to swallow for the big fella but fingers crossed. And I say that sincerely, knowing that Cats may have had their day for a while, and that the Eagles nest-building over the past few years will likely seal the fate of any team that comes before them. Karmichael Hunt picked up15 possessions against the Crows which I thought demonstrated he was continuing to improve. That’s all from the Bald Eagle on “the greatest game on earth”. Have a happy Easter and stay safe.

Two more club records broken CLUB night on Friday, March 30, saw 33 Weipa Lightening Swimming Club swimmers attending, with numbers down a bit due to school holidays starting. The kids still managed 42 Personal Bests (PBs), and another two club records were broken. Swimmers of the week this week were Alissa Koina, Ashlee Moon, Landen Proud and Molly Toomey. Alissa swam five PBs from six swims, including knocking off over nine seconds from her 200m individual medley, and 15 seconds off her 100m backstroke. Ashlee Moon swam four PBs from five swims, including slicing 12 seconds off her 50m butterfly and three seconds off her 50m backstroke. Landen Proud swam four PBs from four swims, and in the process knocked two seconds from his backstroke, and three seconds from his butterfly. Molly swam four PBs from six swims, including knocking off 18 seconds from her 200m individual medley, two seconds off her 50m backstroke and four seconds off her 100m freestyle. Three PBs for the night from Kirra Koina and Sabrina Koina, including some four and five second improvements. Two PBs for the night from Amy Bakker, Ruby Coulter, Savannah Proud and Elle Toomey. One PB was swum by Harry Bakker, Hannah Gamble, Brodie Hyytinen, Tessa Hyytinen, Braydon Keough, Katelyn McCahon, Alex McInnes, Moara Sam, Brock Taylor, Alex-Adel Tyson and Donald Tyson. High standard in squash games A GRADE fixtures at the Weipa Squash Club were of their usual high standard on Tuesday night. Team Tallie played Team Pot and the Tallies got off to a good start with A4 Amanda McKenzie defeating Shay Alley in four games (3-1). A3 Steve Lugsdin was narrowly beaten by Shane Spagnol (2-3) and likewise with A1 Ross Hyytinnen. Ross however succumbed to injury in the fourth game against Dave Edward (1-3), otherwise this match could have seen a different ending. The first game of Team Schooner v Team Stubby was a nail-biter between A4 Jay Dumbleton and Ben Tantau. The first game went to a “long” game going to Ben, followed by a second tough game, but Jay pulled out all stoppers and came through in games three and four. Ben found a second wind, and with many excellent long rallies and long shots throughout the match, Ben succeeded (2-3). A3 Sherie Hinschen played well in her return to the circuit and looked like she may have the first game against Chrisden Russ but alas no. Chrisden took further control (although he ended up laid-out on the floor once during this match) by winning the second and third games (0-3). A2 Grant Foster won convincingly against Jeff Berry, although the stamina of these two young players meant spectators were in for a display of agility (3-0). A1 Lukas Dorsett stole the first game off Owen Witt, however Owen picked up the reins and ran with them, winning the next three. Lukas dug his heels in during the last game, and after some marathon rallies, Owen came out in front (1-3). Team Pint won by a long margin against Team Yard Glass, beginning with A3 Laurie Raleigh battling it out against Wendy Long and actually losing the first game, but then finding form to take out the next three (3-1). A2 Rod Beilby out-played Nick Brookes despite Nick’s height and age advantage, but
still a good game to watch (3-0). Rod played again, this time as A1 sub for Tom Murray, against a much younger opponent Aaron Schleich, and was obviously “on fire” and suitably warmed up from the previous game, but by no means worn out. In an entertaining match with plenty of friendly banter from the sideline, victory alternated until the last game when Rod shone through (3-2). Still many B grade games being pre-played which makes Thursday nights more manageable for everyone, so thanks to all those concerned. Team Mojita seems to be a stronger team than Team Pina Colada at this point in the competition but who knows what will happen in future rounds. B8 Lucy Boxall defeated Wade Spry (3-0), B7 Adrian Costello came out of the barrier strongly and took the first game off Cicely Baira, but then gradually lost the next three games (1-3). B6 Kristie Moran easily defeated Aleisha O’Brien (3-0), B5 Ian Newsome is certainly slotting into this game nicely and had Sam O’Neill on the hop from the word go (3-0). B4 Fiona Newsome had a challenging middle game, but easily won the other two from Patrick Lightart (3-0). B3 Joe Buckley came out swinging (but not missing) and won the first game against Josh Donnelly, then got flogged in the second. Not to be intimidated, he fought back to take the third game to a long game but alas lost, then also the next one (1-3). B2 Ben Braun was consistent throughout the four games he played against Michael Cridland, scoring nine points each game. Michael managed to score 10 points in the second game, but it was Ben’s night (3-1). Team Long Island Iced Tea and Margarita scored an incredible 17 games each for the night, but LIIT actually won more matches First up were B8 Sam Trebble, who played Jess Hall in a marathon game. Sam took the
first two games (the second one of which was long), then Jess found her feet and took the next three (2-3). Sam also played as a sub for Shaelene against B7 Kylie Carr and she really shone in the second game, forcing it to long, but Kylie won outright (0-3). B6 Katie Delfs won convincingly against Denica Russ (3-0); B5 Tim Manning met his match in Elisa Moody, thrashing it out for five games. Tim was eventually the victor (3-2). B4 Nicole Dearling had a fantastic game against Melissa Ghee. The first three games went to “long” and alternated, but Nicole powered on to take the last two games (3-2). B3 Mark Walters was no match for Donna O’Neill (0-3); B2 Chris Bienvenu had his work cut out for him when he came up against Ben Smith, and was in fact down two points before he took the last game (3-2). B1 Steve Moore and Adam Blocksidge were also evenly matched in a friendly, yet competitive game but Steve pulled it off (3-2). Team Martini was by far stronger than their opposition Team Blue Lagoon, with a couple of exceptions. When B7 Kristie McManus was confronted with myself, she of course flogged me (3-0). B6 Luke Mann, after losing the first game, really highlighted his opponent’s capabilities, taking the last three games to “long” games (3-1). B8 Renee Williams went down to Charissa Hill, who is improving rapidly (0-3), and B4 Emma Thomas played well against her stronger adversary Peter Thompson (1-3) B3. It was not B3 Tom Bellinger’s night when he faced Sally Parr, losing (0-3). B2 Stephen Borg stole the first game off Randall O’Neill, then Randall fought back with tenacity in a “long” game. With steely determination Stephen won the last two (3-1). B1 Justin Hyytinen surprisingly lost to Cole Dalton (0-3). Yours squashfully, Ruth Harris

Always store your mono net in water, mixed with a bit of hair conditioner or fabric softener in an airtight bucket. Always carry a current size chart to keep in touch, as telling a Fisheries OfďŹ cer you didn’t know the size won’t wash any more. A few mixed stories about the TuskďŹ sh out around Duyfken, with some scoring well where others end up empty handed. That can happen to anyone, as we all know. Sometimes they are chewing and sometimes
they aren’t. A couple of things you can try - drop down a berley bomb for one (recipe to follow). Make sure you allow for the run of the tide when dispensing your berley. Sometimes you have to throw the berley ďŹ ve metres in front of the boat. Don’t make your berley that big that it lets the ďŹ sh get a feed, about the size of a beer can is about the right size. You can use a variety of things except fish scraps, which tend to draw the Sharks. Crustaceans like Prawn and Crab shells are great, but if you haven’t got any head down the beach at night and get a few Ghost Crabs or mix in a bit Squid for a cocktail. Another method used is to use a 7/0 jig head with a large Prawn or a Crab which can prove quite productive. Heaps of Barra being caught
anywhere a bit of fresh is running into the foreshore or creeks. Some times you can’t see the fresh coming but you can hear it, so keep your ears and eyes open. Live bait is probably the preferred type but with conditions like we have at the moment lures work, if not better, just as well as livies. Preferred lures being used are B52s,Gold Bombers,Golden Streak 97 Barra Classics, and the old reliable White Squidgies on whatever jig head you like. The Prawn are still not big enough, but the small fry are getting a pounding from the juvie Jacks, Barra, Queenies and Trevally. Quite a performance they are putting on down at Evans Landing and well worth a look. I will catch up with you all next week.

The barra are biting I THOUGHT it might be a good idea to tell everyone about the proper care of cast nets as I have been asked about this a couple of times this week. Firstly, there are two types of material used in net making for domestic use, one being mono or fishing line, and the other is nylon. There used to be a third kind, Kuralon or cotton, however this was phased out about 25 years ago because of cost. Nylon, believe it or not needs more care than mono ,so you have to look after it if you want to make it last. A nylon cast net has to be washed thoroughly with soapy warm water after use (warm to dissolve the salt), then rinsed and hung to dry in a shaded area. It must be shady as sunlight bleaches the thread which makes it rip very easily. Mono cast nets need a lot less care compared to nylon nets. The main rule you have to remember is it’s made from fishing line so once you get it wet it has to stay wet for the rest of its life. Never, and I mean never, let it dry in the sun as this will make it dry and rot worse than a nylon net. Remember keep it wet. UU continued page 23
Rui’s persistence finally paid off and he landed this beauty of a barramundi.
