A RECENT Crocodile Sighting sign has been erected at the Rocky Point boat ramp following the sighting of a large crocodile in the area last week (left). Western Cape Bulletin reader, Chris Manning, sent the photo in at right, taken last Thursday morning on the sand-spit at the mouth of Trunding Creek, clearly showing the tracks of a crocodile heading back into Albatross Bay. It is important to be aware of crocodiles at all times, but particularly at this time of year when they are on the move.

the search for mates. Once the wet season starts, the females typically move ‘off river’ and onto the fringes of adjacent wetlands to build their nest mound. This is made from of a mixture of soil and vegetation matter which look superficially like a scrub turkey mound. The females often scrape out a mud wallow nearby from where they hang out to protect the nest, often very aggressively, from any predators. The wallow looks something like an elongated pig wallow. Interestingly one female named “Tarlisha� moved well downstream into tidal waters to nest adjacent to the Wenlock during the 2009 - 20010 wet, whereas for reasons unknown, last wet season she moved well upstream into the freshwater reaches of the river. The research has also shown that some crocodiles go on quite lengthy journeys over the wet season.

AS many locals know, November is the month when estuarine crocodiles often begin venturing further afield as the buildup to the wet season really develops. This fact is very much supported by the joint crocodile research being undertaken by Australia Zoo, and Professor Craig Franklin and Dr Hamish Campbell from the University of Queensland. However because of this research, the most extensive yet undertaken in the world on large crocodiles, we are now able to see just where and how far the crocodiles are moving. This year we added another 22 crocodiles to the research project, making a total of 86 animals being tracked by acoustic pingers, with 26 of these also being fitted with GPS trackers. Breeding is very much on the agenda for mature-aged crocodiles now, with males often getting involved in territorial fights when out on

As an example, over the 2009 and 2010 rainy season, a 14-foot male crocodile known as “Aristotle� undertook a journey down the Wenlock River, out into Port Musgrave, up the Ducie River into Bertiehaugh Creek, and completed the curcuit back into the Wenlock via Nimrod Creek. This expedition, over a three-month-long period, covered approximately 300 kilometres, and included an overland hike of at least six kilometres.

Over the wet season movement of male crocodiles out of the main river into tributaries and billabongs is also commonplace, possibly to avoid the floodwaters and find easier places to hunt prey. At Gibson’s Billabong on the Wenlock flood plain we found two crocodile ‘hair balls’ that were most likely from the crocodile named “Greg Norman�, who was tracked as moving into the lagoon over the wet season. The animal was given this name in recognition of the golfer ’s support for our crocodile research. (Crocodiles are unable to digest animal fur and cough it up in dense ‘balls’ formed in their stomachs in the manner of a cat.) One of the most startling finds of the research to date, has been the discovery that

that both sides of the crossing were a hot spot where fish and sometimes crocodiles congregated and fed, especially as the tides changed. However the regular crossings by certain crocodiles further highlights what an important ecological feature this rock bar is. Camping too close to the water’s edge is potentially dangerous at any time, a fact that this local research really highlights. It is likely that crocodiles regularly cross similar features in other river systems, and are not often seen because this mainly occurs at night time. The ceremony was held around Ti Tree Pool and witnessed by their daughter Mia, family and friends. Following the nuptials Lisa and Tim celebrated their marriage with their wedding party and guests in The Rainforest Function Room at the resort. Entsch claims Support for women of all ages “Labor treating Weipa like a backwater” MEMBER for Leichhardt Warren Entsch has this week slammed the Federal Labor Government for treating Weipa like a backwater, with the region once again missing out on benefiting from schemes such as Regional Development Australia and the National Broadband Network. Despite promises by local state Labor MPs and Senator Jan McLucas to fight for funding in the RDA grants scheme, Weipa has been ignored in $200 million worth of funding announced in recent months. In fact, more than 70 per cent of the RDA funding has been directed to seats held by Labor or Labor-supporting Independents, with $140.5 million going to these seats and just $58.1 million granted to Coalition seats or WA Nationals seats. “Labor has again failed to recognise the urgent and obvious need to assist Weipa in a range of matters the region faces,” Mr Entsch said. “The RDA program provided an opportunity to address the region’s infrastructure needs by kickstarting projects identified by industry and the community. “Instead, the Labor Government chose to favour Labor seats, in what can only be described as blatant pork-barrelling.” The Torres Strait is also still waiting for the $22 million in funding the Labor Government promised in parliament to repair sea walls. To add insult to injury, the Labor Party has confirmed that not a single cable will be laid in Cairns under their National Broadband Network for at least another two years, with expecta-

tions it will take a minimum of three years for any work on the NBN to begin. In response to a question on a social media website, the Cairns ALP branch confirmed the NBN would not be coming to Cairns until at least 2014, with no guarantee of a timeline at any point over the next eight years of the NBN rollout program.

That means any high speed internet connections in Weipa will take even longer to rollout. Under both the RDA and NBN schemes, Townsville managed to secure funding under the RDA and was included in the first rollout of the NBN. “Labor representatives in the Far North must explain why Townsville managed to secure funding for these two initiatives while we missed out, yet again,” Mr Entsch said. “Labor in Far North Queensland is all talk and no action. They should hang their heads in shame for standing by while other cities with less urgent needs benefit from the Federal Government’s largesse.”

New initiative to target jobs in remote Indigenous communities RESIDENTS in Queensland’s remote and discrete Indigenous communities will soon have access to greater employment and training opportunities thanks to a new $1.5 million Queensland Government initiative. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Curtis Pitt announced the new initiative at the 11th Ministerial Indigenous Roundtable in Wujal Wujal in Far North Queensland last Wednesday. Mr Pitt said that under the initiative, five Indigenous employment and training coordinators would be engaged to work in remote Indigenous communities throughout Queensland. “The Indigenous Employment and Training Coordinators will play a critical role in linking local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to employment and training opportunities through the Queensland Government’s existing housing and infrastructure work programs,” he said. “The coordinators will work with community, government and nongovernment agencies to develop labour supply and skills profiles.

“This will help to link jobseekers with the contractors who are doing the work on the ground in remote and discrete Indigenous communities. “Contractors will be able to maximise the number of local people they are employing, helping to boost Indigenous employment in remote parts of Queensland.” Mr Pitt said the coordinators would also develop valuable connections with government agencies, employment and training service providers and community and industry organisations. “The best way I know of supporting people who want to improve their lives is by helping them to participate in the workforce,” Mr Pitt said. “That’s exactly what this initiative is all about and these coordinators will play a central role in helping to deliver better employment outcomes for Indigenous Queenslanders.” Mr Pitt said the positions were part of the State Government’s plan to generate more jobs and economic development in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“Providing more jobs and economic development is what this program is all about,” Mr Pitt said. “It will help to links tradies and job seekers with employment opportunities in their own communities, while supporting economic development in remote parts of the State.” Housing Minister Karen Struthers said the initiative would deliver jobs and help community members gain a trade and long term work. “It will place participants well to get work in the biggest ever rollout of social housing in remote indigenous communities in Queensland’s history,” Ms Struthers said. “The Queensland Government is building 1100 new social houses and upgrading 1200 existing buildings in discrete Indigenous communities by 2018 under the Remote Indigenous Housing National Partnership Agreement. “It’s about providing more housing, more jobs and more opportunities for Indigenous Queenslanders living in remote parts of the State.”

THE VET & Employment team at Western Cape College has been kept busy over the last two months signing-up school-based trainees and apprentices with local businesses. Job Placement Officer, Michell Buchholtz has certainly had her hands full recently, co-ordinating work placements, inductions, interviews and signups through Queensland Apprenticeship Services and/or Skills 360. According to Head of VET & Employment WCC, Emma-Lee Bradford, the influx of interest in schoolbased traineeships and apprenticeships can be attributed to “the focused effort of the College to engage businesses in conversations about succession planning and providing the students skills to ensure they are ‘job ready’.� School-based traineeships and apprenticeships allow students

in years 10, 11 or 12 to engage in a flexible arrangement of combining school and work. Students are supported by a partnership between the College, the business, the training provider and Queensland Apprenticeship Services. The qualifications these students gain are nationally recognised and allow businesses to plan for the future, train their staff correctly and induct young people in to the world of work. “Despite external media hype, the Cape region is still suffering from a skills shortage and Western Cape College has willing and enthusiastic students who are ready to combine school, training and employment,� Ms Bradford said. Western Cape Beat The silly season approaches AS the Christmas silly season approaches, Weipa Police wish to remind residents that while you can have a good time don’t let it be at the expense to your personal safety or the well being of your neighbours. There is always an increase in private parties and functions leading up to the festive month. Party organisers need to ensure they comply with all alcohol management plans and noise legislation. No alcohol can be taken into or consumed in Napranum and restricted limits apply in Mapoon. Weipa Police will conduct regular interception sites checking that all vehicles entering the communities are complying.

IN our walk with the Lord, the fires of everyday trials will purify us Christians, like in the olden times when salt was used to purify sacrifices before they are given up to God, until we become “pleasing sacrifices” to God. Our belief is that one day the Lord Jesus will return bringing with him the rewards for the faithful, and eternal separation from God for those who hate him. We now go on to Chapter 10 vs 1-12 of Mark and we find the Pharisees once again trying to set a trap to catch Jesus out saying something wrong, giving wrong advice. They chose the topic of divorce, a subject that the Jewish teachers, Rabbis, have different views on, and argued constantly about. (Jewish women had no right to divorce their husbands, only the

husbands had the right). To understand the debate better between the Lord and the Pharisees, we will look to the gospel of Matthew Ch 19 vs 1-12, where his account gives us those extra words that the Pharisees and the Lord used. The essential question the Pharisees asked is in Matthew Ch 19 v 3 was, “Does our Law allow a man to divorce his wife for whatever reason he wishes?”(These words in italics, among others, are not in the Mark account). The Jewish teachers called Rabbis held views on divorce that ranged from unfaithfulness to anything that made the husband angry. (Like burning his breakfast!) The Lord answered and said that if two people are joined together with God’s blessings, then nobody has a right

to break them up. God is the creator, and in his eyes they become one people in marriage. (Genesis Ch 2 v 24). The Pharisees countered with the fact that Moses gave a law that entitled men to give their wives a divorce notice and send them packing. The Lord answered back by pointing out that that was never the ideal, but Moses did that because the Jewish people were so unteachable. He made that law to cut down the divorce rate. Then the Lord said that except for unfaithfulness, all divorces are wrong, and people who divorce otherwise, commit adultery when they marry someone else. More next week on this topic. God is love. WEEK eight of the Indigenous Pathways Solutions Work Start Program incorporated the Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Indigenous Trainee Assessment Centre. Twelve IPS team members completed the IPS program and prior to the assessment centre, three of these had already been employed. At the assessment centre the remaining nine participants underwent the arduous process of assessment prior to employment with RTA and all of the

participants were successful in attaining employment (pictured below). IPS graduates consistently perform extremely well in employment assessment centres are highly sought-after by Rio Tinto leaders as they have become used to the high standards and display desirable work standards. On-line weed idenitifcation tool launched THE battle to stop the spread of weeds in Queensland received a boost this week with the launch of a new on-line identification tool. The Weeds of Australia toolkit has been initiated by Biosecurity Queensland in partnership with the Centre for Biological Information Technology, and will help the community to identify over 1,000 different types of weeds. Biosecurity Queensland’s Invasive Plants and Animal General Manager Gabrielle Vivian-Smith, said the identification tool also linked to information on various control measures. “ We e d s a r e a b l e to spread rapidly and can have a devastating

impact on ecosystems and the productivity of primary industries,” Dr Vivian-Smith said. “Prevention and early intervention are the most cost effective ways of controlling new and emerging weeds in Queensland. “The on-line toolkit will allow people to identify and help control the spread of invasive plants.” Users can identify a particular weed by selecting from a variety of different plant features. Once identification has been verified, the resource key then links to information on how to control the weed, if it is available. “If you’re still not certain about the identification of the weed, you can take a sample to your

regional Weedspotter coordinator or send a pressed sample to the Queensland Herbarium,” Dr Vivian-Smith said. “Alternatively, you can submit a photo of the plant for identification via the toolkit.” Many weeds including parthenium, giant rat’s tail grass and water hyacinth could have been spread earlier this year by floodwaters. With the arrival of warmer weather, weed growth and flowering could really take off

across the state, so Dr Vivian-Smith believes the toolkit’s arrival is a timely one. “Our aim is to prevent the spread and increase the management of invasive weeds by the community, and the on-line toolkit will help support that goal. Team Sea Swift Pirates caught the first billfish of the weekend.

THE inaugural Weipa Billfish Challenge was held over the weekend of November 12 and 13 and was a resounding success. A total of 27 billfish were raised, with 16 hooked and nine tagged during the competition which rivals recently-held Cairns and Townsville small boat billfish tournaments where eight and 10 fish were tagged respectively over five-day events. Event organisers Terri Garlick and Duane Singleton were impressed with the local anglers’ commitment, diligence and enthusiasm over the two-day event. Fourteen teams registered for the challenge with 43 anglers competing for the prize of the top billfish catch. Perfect conditions on Saturday saw three sailfish and two black

marlin tagged for day one, and with the weather slightly more choppy on Sunday anglers tagged two sailfish and two black marlin for day two for the competition. Even though not all anglers tagged billfish, the amount of Mackeral, Tuna, Barracuda, Queenfish and Trevally caught on skip-baits throughout the challenge would make most anglers very jealous. “People really should learn how to rig skip-baits as you couldn’t count the amount of fish each boat caught over the weekend,” Terri said. “There is a myriad of quality pelagics in our waters, you just have to know how to catch them.” The overall winners of the two-day challenge were Last Cast comprising of Alan and his daughter Kristy Philliskirk, Jason Owens and Ben Bright who raised and hooked

four billfish, tagging three of them, to take out the competition. The enthusiasm shown by all participating anglers makes it paramount to opening a game fishing club in Weipa and a meeting will be organised in the next month to discuss formation of the club and future events. “With a billfishing club in Weipa next year’s tournament should attract anglers from all parts of Australia and we already have a major sponsor for the 2012 Challenge,” Terri said. Weipa Billfish Challenge would like to thank the Carpentaria Golf Club and the Weipa Bowls Club for the use of their venues and the service they provided to everyone involved in the competition, along with the Weipa VMR for keeping an eye on all the boats out on the water over the weekend.

A once in a century moment L A S T F r i d a y ’s Remembrance Day service was the bestattended in years, according to Weipa RSL Sub-Branch president, Neil Dickinson. It was a special service for another reason also, as it will be another one hundred years before 11.11am on 11.11.11 will occur again. Members of the local Weipa RSL Sub-Branch posed for a photo (right) at exactly 11.11am, which the Western Cape Bulletin has submitted to ABC Local Radio for inclusion in a visual time capsule. Tips for buying a worry-free investment property A leading property investment group says most investors buy the wrong type of property, resulting in headaches and discouraging them from building a portfolio. Australian Tax Office statistics show 73 per cent of investors stop after one property while the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that 50 per cent sell their rental property within the first seven years. Both are problems that stem from a bad property choice, costing you not just money but your confidence too. “Good capital growth is essential. It’s important for investors to be savvy in their purchasing, looking outside their own areas

and in markets across the country for areas forecast to have strong growth,” says Kevin. “A good investment property will also attract quality tenants and deliver strong rental yields. Nail-biting finish to squash season

B4 grand final: Baylee Woodhouse versus Ruth Harris (our much-loved columnist).

GRAND finals were held at the Weipa Squash Club last Friday night. A Grade Jackie Chan’s A4 Jimmy Baira (sub) clashed with Tony Jaa’s Chrisden Russ in a competitive battle of skill for these two evenly matched players. There was much applause from the onlookers when Chrisden succeeded in winning the first game, however Jimmy played up a notch to take the next two. Chrisden eventually showed more stamina by hanging on to claim the last two (2-3). A3 Wendy Long and Steve Lugsdin played a great sporting game with lots of friendly banter and applause from the onlookers to reward their excellent rallies. Wendy (sub) went into the lead after the first two games, but then Steve clawed his way back into the game to take the next two, and the fifth was anyone’s, but ended up Wendy’s (3-2). A2 Nick Brookes easily won the first game against Aaron Schleich, however in what looked like a clash of the Titans for much of the game they were stroke for stroke

and played many lengthy rallies. They seemed to dispense with running around the court too much as they merely bent and stretched to have court coverage under control. Aaron took out the match (1-3), much to the delight of his team. As the tension was building up and the fate of the winning team lay in the hands of the A1 match between Dave Edward and his opponent Lukas Dorsett (sub), it was looking good for Tony Jaa when Lukas won the first marathon game which was closely contested and they appeared evenly matched. However, Dave decided his team “could do this”, and with long deep shots to the back wall and nimble retrieval by both parties, and lots of drop shots and boast shots, Dave won the match (3-1). There was a twist – these teams ended up in a draw. Even on countback they were still even! It was a dead draw at two wins, nine games and 120 points each! games against Chuck Norris’ Baylee Woodhouse with Baylee showing as much energy as I showed lethargy (must have been the fishing all day – this is my excuse!) but not to take away from Baylee’s skill, she played extremely well with strategically placed shots (0-3). B3 Logan Smith displayed his skill and dexterity against Sally Parr as with every good return Sally made, Logan bettered it therefore winning many of their excellent rallies. Sally looked like she may turn the tables when she took the third game (which often takes Sally to victory from this point on) but not on grand final night;Logan won the fourth taking the match (3-1). The pressure was on as B1 Michael Cridland (sub) faced his opponent Adam Woodhouse and it was certainly a nail-biter until the end, with both players showing what it takes to be on top of the B Grade ladder. With tactics, agility and finesse Michael narrowly won the first game, then Adam snatched the second game, however Michael seized the reins to win the next two tak-

ing Statham to victory (3-1). I am sure I speak on behalf of all when I say a heartfelt thank you to the Committee for making these fixtures happen and all their hard work in organising and holding the end-of-season barbecues and presentations. Special mentions to key members: Lukas Dorsett, Owen Witt, Dave Wingrove, Justin Hyytinen, Chris Bienvenu and Mary Coffey who help keep the cogs turning. Mary Coffey, we thank you for your contribution to our fine sport over the last decade or so! AFL Cape York returns to town AFL Cape York Regional Development Officers Marc Harbrow and Dwayne Bosun are heading north again to conduct clinics in local schools. The clinics will be focusing on skill development and health in sports education as well as giving students a few pointers on Aussie Rules football. Marc is hoping to organise a couple of after-school AFL footy matches at 5pm for

children/youths at the Weipa Cricket/AFL oval, next Wednesday and Thursday, followed by an adults game, and has invited anyone interested in having a kick to come on down. While in the Cape York area the pair will also be promoting their Wet Season Program for January. The program will include swimming pool, sporting and leadership activities.

New records set at Weipa Swimming Club meet The last Weipa Lightening Swimming club night was held on Friday, November 11, and we had the biggest roll up for the season with 35 swimmers attending, and 45 Personal Best (PBs) times swum. Many swimmers stepped up to swim new events and distances. Golfers celebrate successful season excellent service and delicious food throughout the evening. PROMISING young boxer Johnathan Nandy is looking forward to continuing his career when he moves to Weipa soon to take up a traineeship. The 17-year-old Nandy had his first bout at a Sunstate Amateur Boxing League tournament in Charters Towers on November 12. Nandy lost to seasoned Charters Towers boxer Brayden Withers in a 75kg bout but showed enough talent to be a force in the not too distant future. “This is my ďŹ rst ďŹ ght and I am really looking forward to continuing my boxing when I get to Weipa to take up the traineeship,â€? he said. Nandy hopes to join the Napranum Boxing Club and was one of ďŹ ve boxers who fought for Kuranda Club at last weekend’s tournament. There were 17 bouts at the Arthur Titley Hall with boxers coming from Cairns, Townsville, Sarina, Mackay, Home Hill, Ayr, Bowen, Blackwater and Charters Towers.

Run 1619 12 runners 3 dogs QUASIMODO set the run through the pristine bushland following old hunting trails. We kept a look out for the elusive Black Cockatoo. Other birdlife was abundant though. We wandered about for a while did a bit of bush bashing and ended up back up at the Hooch. There were two more hashers welcomed at the traditional naming circle. Lungs and Ink Job had their on-downs to the melodious sounds of the welcome song. Next week the run will be from 14 Casuarina Cresent. Sorry to hear about your loss Killem. Bianca conquers NY Marathon WEIPA marathon runner and member of Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project, Bianca Graham has faced one of the biggest challenges of her life after successfully completing the New York City Marathon. Bianca and the other 10 IMP team members were among 47,438 runners who took to the streets of New York’s five boroughs in their journey to complete one of man’s toughest challenges. Over 2.5 million spectators lined the course to cheer on the runners and Bianca said the event had a ‘festival feel’ with four-piece bands playing on the corner of every block throughout the race. “Prior to the race the American national anthem was played, followed by Frank Sinatra (of course), then a cannon was fired to start the race – it was just amazing.” There were over 500 Australian runners in the race and Bianca and her running partner, Nadine Hunt, mixed with plenty of runners and spectators from Down Under. “ We had running shirts provided for us by Asics which had ‘Australia” on the back so other Aussie runners were coming up to say ‘hi’ during the race and there were plenty of Aussie supporters waving flags and cheering us on,” Bianca said. Prior to the event Rob and the IMP coach, Tim Rowe continually explained to the team that the race was going to be hard, and that once they hit the 32 kilometre mark and realised they still had a further 12 kilometres to run, they would have to use all their reserves and draw on their

spirit and mind to complete the gruelling run. “It was kind of like being told you were going to be slapped in the face some time in the next 24 hours” Bianca explained. “You knew the slap would come, and you braced for it, but you didn’t know exactly when it would come.” “I was lucky, I didn’t go into a dark space and I ran the whole way. At the 30 kilometre mark my legs were tired, my feet were sore and I could feel my hamstrings but I pushed through it.” Bianca says running with Nadine was a big help as the two IMP team members encouraged each other throughout the marathon and crossed the line together, finishing the run in 3:40:44.
