A bitumen road to Weipa by 2020? By Giembra Busmer

THE prospect of a bitumen road to Weipa being completed within the next 10 years is becoming a reality, according to Cape York Sustainable Futures chief executive officer Trish Butler, who believes an announcement regarding the sealing of the Peninsula Development Road is “imminent”. CYSF have recently produced a brochure in order to lobby State and Federal Ministers for

the bitumen road to Weipa to be completed by 2020, and have already lobbied Queensland Minister for Main Roads, Craig Wallace, who recently travelled the road from Cairns to Bamaga. “Minister Wallace was extremely receptive to our proposal and were are hoping for a positive response in the very near future,” Mrs Butler said. “The current condition of the road is a barrier to a vibrant and diverse economy. It poses health and safety issues for Australia

such as defence and biosecurity (foot and mouth) and during the wet season, the road leaves communities isolated for months at a time resulting in loss of income across the region. “This results in other areas also being affected such as education, social justice, high freight costs and is simply environmentally unsustainable.” Mrs Butler said that there is approximately 400 kilometers of bitumen to construct and that the estimated cost of this is around

$750 million over nine years to be funded by both State and Federal Governments. At the CYSF Open Forum held in Cooktown in September, Tony Potter, Regional Director for Main Roads put forward a three-part plan which will see some major improvements to the Peninsula Development Road in the short, medium and long term. Mrs Butler said she was pleased with Mr Potter’s threepart proposal, which will be released in the very near future,

as one of the key objectives of CYSF has been the construction of an all-weather/sealed Peninsula Development Road. “Ultimately a bitumen road to Weipa will provide all weather access, create local employment, give us a healthy environment and enable a vibrant and diverse economy for the Cape York. “This will also provide major flow on benefits that will help close the gap that will improve quality of life for all Cape York residents,” Mrs Butler said.

Bomber crash: Cape York history revealed ON September 17, 1942, eight B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 93rd Bombardment Squadron of the 19th Bombardment Group b a s e d a t M a re e b a airfield , departed Seven Mile airfield at Port Moresby to bomb Japanese forces at Rabaul. B-17E Flying Fortress, #41-2650, piloted by 1st Lt. Claude N. Burcky, dropped its bomb load and turned back for Port Moresby. By this time Port Moresby was covered in cloud and the Navigator, Lt. William Meenagh DFC, set a course for the Horn Island airfield. They became lost in the rough weather and eventually started to run out of fuel. At 2.40am on Sep-

tember 18, 1942, Burcky ordered his crew to bail out. They ended up way off course near the Pennefather River, about 125 miles SSW of Horn Island. Lt. Meenagh, was the first to bail out. The rest of the crew regrouped and survived their ordeal although suffering some serious injuries and sunburn. They owed their lives to a swift rescue by Aboriginal men from Weipa and Mapoon. Tragically Lt William Meenagh was never located and continues to be reported as Missing in Action. Through continued research in the soon to be released book titled “Honour between the Wings Ravenshoe resident Michael Musumeci has located descendants

of William Meenagh in New York, USA. Gerard Meenagh was overwhelmed with emotion when informed that such dedicated people in Australia continue to capture the World War II history of such events and it is delighted that Lt Meenagh is still being recognised. Geoff Wharton, local Cape York historian, who last year assisted Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council in the implementation of a Memorial Wall in Mapoon with a plaque dedicated to Lt Meenagh’s memory, donated a piece of the aircraft to the Meenagh family as a sign of respect for William’s service to Australia. DURING November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on men’s faces in CapeYork and around the world as they raise funds and awareness for men’s health, and this year will be no different as the boys at Bravo Coy 51 FNQR have registered their Mo Bro team. Peter McCulkin and WO2 Tony Harris committed to the cause at the last Bravo Coy happy hour and will be saying goodbye to their long-term moustaches this Friday night at the 51st Weipa base. The Crocodile Bar will be open from 5.30pm and the girls from Heritage Hair & Beauty will be on hand to do the shaving honours for Peter and Tony, and any other blokes

who decide to take on the Movember challenge. Guys need to register by November 1 with a cleanshaven face and for the rest of the month groom, trim and wax their moustaches, raising funds by seeking out sponsorship for their mo-growing efforts. The funds raised by these mo-growing guys support the two biggest health issues men face, prostate cancer and depression. Everyone is invited to the Crocodile Bar this Friday night to enjoy a few bevies and enjoy the Movember shave-off. Any guys wishing to become Mo Bros can sign-up on the night and girls (Mo Sistas) can enjoy the grooming spectacle while supporting both their men and this important fundraisingcause.

Stolen Wages could be withheld from next of kin Alf Wilson story

DESCENDANTS of Indigenous Stolen Wages claimants throughout Queensland who die before they receive payments may not be eligible for the money, a meeting in Townsville has been told. About 7500 people around Queensland including some from Napranum, Mapoon, Weipa, Aurukun, and other Cape York communities, are owed Stolen Wages and some are dying before receiving their claims. About 80 men and women attended the meeting at St Teresa’s Church in Townsville on October 20, which was organised by the Queensland Council of Unions. The audience heard QCU has finalised it’s statement of claim for a test trial which is on behalf Stolen Wages of claimant Uncle Conrad Yeatman. A date for the trial is expected to be known soon. Uncle Conrad was a former carpenter and labourer in Queensland who had his wages withheld from him since he began work at 14. His story is one of hundreds the QCU has heard from some of the claimants in its travels around Indigenous communities. QCU Secretary Ron Monaghan said setting of a trial date would be a welcome step towards justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers in making the Queensland government move toward addressing injustices of the past. From 1904 to 1972 the wages and savings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers were forcibly controlled by the state. “These workers, some as young as 10 when they started, were denied the basic entitlements all workers take for granted. Workers were not paid their wages, paid more tax than other Queenslanders and were denied the right to

use their savings as they saw fit. For some, this system was imposed for over a decade of employment. Stolen Wages claimants have fought long and hard for wages justice, and the QCU will continue to offer them every possible assistance to achieve their goal, Mr Monaghan said. During question time from the audience, Mr Monaghan was asked by local Townsville and Aboriginal Islander Health Service Stolen Wages Councillor Genevieve Meldrum whether entitlements would be passed onto children of claimants if they died before receiving the money. “It is a grey area but the indications point to that they will not, Mr Monaghan said. That prompted other members of the audience to express in strong terms that in such cases, money owed should be treated as normal inheritances. Darren Butler was there with his father Russell Butler and said in the case of claimants

dying, the payments should go to the next of kin. “It is an inheritance, Darren Butler said. Aunty Mary Twaddle is aged 82 and is owed Stolen Wages for working on stations. “I fear all of us older people will die before the money is paid, Aunty Mary said. Patrick Neliman and Loretta Zaro both have one parent who is waiting Stolen Wages. The Western Cape Bulletin attended the meeting and was told of one unusual case in which Thursday Island man Paul Ahwang had been paid some of his Stolen Wages claim. However his 77-year-old identical twin Arthur Ahwang had worked on the same job at the same time and had not been paid. “We worked on a trochus boat at Mackay together. I am still owed some other Stolen Wages as well, Paul Ahwang said. Kenlock Auda from Boigu Island worked as a diver in the

Torres Strait and said he was still owed wages. Fay Thimble said she was owed Stolen Wages and hopes the State Government will rule that descendants of claimants who die can be paid. Mr Monaghan told the audience that candidates in the coming State election were being asked where they stood on Stolen Wages. Mr Monaghan said that repaying the Stolen Wages was a key plank of the Charter for Working Queenslanders during a union Week of Action. “Queensland workers will not stand by and see fellow workers being denied their correct entitlements, and obtaining a trial date is a significant step towards resolution. “The trade union movement is pleased to be able to assist Uncle Conrad in his quest to gain wage justice and in the process, offer hope to all those workers whose wages were stolen, Mr Monaghan said.

Weipa Town Authority CEO, Ian Pressley at the site of the new Telstra tower in Nanum.

TELSTRA announced last Friday that local Weipa businesses and residents would benefit from new mobile and wireless broadband coverage following the installation of a new mobile base station in Nanum. Telstra Country Wide General Manager for Far North Queensland, Amanda Albon said Telstra had worked closely with the local council and community, responding to local feedback that residents and businesses wanted improved mobile and wireless broadband coverage in the town “People in Weipa and Nanum will experience improved mobile coverage in the town, following upgrades to the local base station. This means fewer drop outs, and more reliable service,” Ms Albon said. “This enhanced coverage is the direct result of both Telstra’s

ongoing investment in the Telstra mobile network and local customer feedback and will provide significant benefits to the local community and business.” CEO Weipa Town Authority, Ian Pressley said he is happy to have the new tower in Nanum. “The town seems much happier since the new Telstra tower was switched on this week,” said Mr Pressley. Ms Albon said Telstra is continuing to invest in additional mobile network capacity to meet customer demand. “Given the increasing popularity of smartphones and tablets, people are using their mobile devices in more ways, and downloading more content on the run. We’ve upgraded the network so they can do this more reliably and in more places,” Ms Albon said.

Aboriginal Fund abandoned RIO Tinto is abandoning its Aboriginal Fund which has financed initiatives to support Indigenous people for the past 15 years. A Rio Tinto spokesperson said that in line with modern practice the company wanted to move away from the philanthropic approach to the more desired model of directly supporting the Indigenous communities in which it operates, ensuring better outcomes for Aboriginal men and women are linked to business success. “We will continue our support for the indigenous communities in the areas in which we operate around Australia. “This is in line with Page 4 Western Cape Bulletin October 26, 2011

the commitments in our Reconciliation Action Plan that has received very strong support from Indigenous communities. “Rio Tinto is a strong supporter of our Aboriginal men and woman and of the communities in which it operates in Australia, and that commitment is as strong as ever. Rio Tinto supports negotiated participation agreements that empower local Indigenous communities to determine their own future. “Rio Tinto is the largest private sector employer of Indigenous people in Australia, employing about 1,800 men and women, which is about nine per cent of its Australian workforce,” the spokesperson said.

The company says it will continue to work in collaboration with Indigenous Australians to overcome socioeconomic disadvantage and work in partnership with local Aboriginal communities to create sustainable regions and a more positive future for our Indigenous people. “We are committed to the creation of intergenerational wealth and to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access to, and the chance to benefit from, mining activities on their land,” the spokesperson said. A spokesperson for Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa said the decision will not affect the local Community Donations program.

Mapping feral pigs for better control

THE people of the Western Cape can now go online to map where cane toads are jumping right across Australia and in your local area so as to better target them in pest control activities. You can also now do the same for feral pigs as well as a host of other invasive animals. ToadScan and FeralPigScan are the latest addition to the FeralScan project by the Invasive Animals CRC and the NSW Department of Primary Industries that has received overwhelming community participation with more than 8,000 records of feral pests entered by 4,500 participants Australia-wide since it was launched in January this year. “FeralScan is a landholder, community, industry, government and business collaboration showcasing citizen science at its best,” NSW DPI FeralScan officer Peter West said. “For the first time, FeralScan gives a national overview of the

extent of invasive animals and damage they cause as well as mapping where control is being undertaken”. FeralScan supports anyone with an invasive animal problem to access essential information and resources to help in control measures and report information about feral animals in their local area. The FeralScan project also includes RabbitScan, FoxScan, MynaScan, and CamelScan. FeralFishScan is part of future research plans to allow recreational fishers to start reporting carp in our rivers. To further empower anyone with the technology to map where pest animals occur and to better target pest control activities, FeralScan plans to develop phone applications to deliver web-mapping technology directly into the hands of primary producers, pest controllers and communities Australiawide. FeralScan can be accessed at www.feralscan.org.au

FAT LOSS

A new approach to removing stubborn body fat has emerged and is proving to be highly successful. In the past, weight loss programs have been based on a combination of theories at different times, weight loss is often achieved but many nutrient deficiencies can arise, tiredness and cravings are often overwhelming, stubborn fat areas can persist and maintaining the loss is nearly always difficult. HCG homeopathic drops act directly on the hypothalamus, which instructs the body to “unlock” stored body fat and in conjunction with a low calorie food intake it allows the body to use those stored calories. 23 – 45 days and you will see between 10 and 20cm of body fat disappear (taking many toxins along with it) equating to between 4 and 15 kilos (the program can be repeated after a break if greater weight loss is required). So, in essence you are still getting the calories you normally would, but you are burning up your excess body fat for them. So no cravings, no hunger, no tiredness, no loss of good fats, body muscle or other nutritional deficiencies and a permanent reprogramming of your appetite and final body weight and composition. Letters to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au

Napranum PCYC service delivery information THE Napranum PCYC would like to take this opportunity to inform Napranum community members and relevant service providers of the Napranum PCYC’s changes to service delivery. Our service delivery changes took effect in late July 2011 at which time Napranum PCYC met with the Napranum Council and extended an open invitation of all Napranum community members to attend a barbecue at the centre on July 28 to explain the service delivery changes. However we are still receiving feedback and comments from families and service providers that indicate that there is still confusion over the programming and consequently we would like to publicly express the changes for the benefit of all community members.

It was identified that the facilities the Napranum PCYC operate out of in the Napranum Community had Health and safety issues in relation to the plumbing, electricity and building structure. The PCYC’s service delivery practices need to be aligned with Occupational Health and Safety standards and the safety of our attending children and staff is paramount. Consequently the Napranum PCYC was unable to continue utilising this facility. We are currently in negotiations with the Napranum Council to seek funding to fix these issues as they are very expensive. To apply for and receive funding takes time. We understand this is just as frustrating for you as it is for us. We ask for your patience, support and understanding while we go through the task of applying for and receiving enough funding to fix the building. Other venues within the community have been sop-

ught; however many of the buildings have the same issues as the PCYC centre. Also, the vandalism that has been occurring at the centre over the past few months is only hindering this process, as we are now spending money to fix other areas such as windows, gardens, our sign, replace food, pay for cleaners, etc. We ask that if you see anyone hanging around or vandalising the premises that you contact the Weipa Police. We are holding a service providers meeting on November 9 to discuss the program changes and any support we can get to help obtain funding to fix the building. Community members are welcome to attend as well. The meeting will be held at 10am at the Weipa PCYC office (second detachable building on the school oval opposite BP Service Station, Boundary Road). Morning tea will be provided. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate

to contact Shae Ailey, Napranum SEDS Officer on 0439 534 319. Thank you from the Napranum PCYC

Thank a teacher this Friday AUSTRALIA will celebrate World Teachers’ Day on Friday, 28 October 28. It is a day when local communities can acknowledge the important contribution that teachers and principals make to the lives and futures of Australian children. It is also a day when teachers are reminded of both the rewards and challenges of their chosen profession – challenges that seem to become more complex every day as the world we live in becomes more challenging. If you know a teacher, let him or her know that teachers’ efforts are valued and appreciated. Steve Ryan President, Queensland Teachers’ Union

WHEN the Lord went walkabout on mission for God with his disciples, he would use situations that arose to give more teaching to his disciples. During his last teachings that we have just studied, he kept mentioning hell, if you remember. Mark Ch 9 v 43 “go off to hell, to the fire that never goes out”; v 45 “be thrown into hell”; v 47 “be thrown into hell”. In my Good News Bible verses 44

and 46 are noted as having been added by some manuscripts, but they both describe hell in the same way as verse 48 does. It says, “ There ‘the worms that eat them never die, and the fire that burns them is never put out’.” The Lord was quoting Isaiah Ch 66 v 24 when he spoke about hell, and Isaiah is describing the smouldering rubbish dump of Jerusalem, called Gehenna, and

the fires there burned continuously. The Lord used that picture as a description of hell being a state (rather than a place) of eternal torment. In other places in the Bible its been described as a place or state of eternal torment, eternal darkness, eternal destruction and eternal separation from God. Hell was not prepared for people to be sent to; it was really prepared for the Devil and his rebellious an-

gels as punishment for turning against God. But because people have a free will and many choose to also rebel against God, they too will join the Devil and his angels. Matthew Ch 25 v 41 reports Jesus as saying, “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Away from me, you that are under God’s curse! Away to the eternal fire which has been prepared for the Devil and his angels!” It’s important to

know that the Lord never accused sinners of going to hell, but only as a warning to believers that there is such a place, and it’s a terrible, terrible, place (or state of mind) to be in. That is why Jesus is known as the Saver (Saviour) of the world. People need to believe this and receive him into their hearts. The Lord be with you. Rev Michael Connolly

On a running note Never judge a book by its cover……. Two young offenders recently ran from two very experienced officers during court week. Thankfully one of the veteran officers has kept in tip top shape over the years and was able to pursue the offenders on foot for over a kilometre, up over fences and through several backyards. The young offenders, unable to shake the tail, were eventually rounded up and given some jail time for their troubles. I can’t repeat exactly how the offenders described the veteran but it went something along the lines of “That old gentleman certainly is a fit fellow”. They were definitely in awe of his abilities which came as no surprise to the rest of us. Nice work Sarge.

the male left a party at Nanum in the early hours of September 9 this year before stealing a bike from the front yard of a residence on Christie Avenue. Police intercepted the male on Hay Straight at which time the bike was seized. Further enquiries established that the male was unable to provide a reasonable explanation as to where the bike came from. The male later accompanied police on a drive around Nanum and nominated where the bike had been stolen from. Fortunately the bike was returned to its rightful owner. A Napranum lady was fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for a period of nine months after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of liquor on September 17. The female was intercepted on John Evans Drive and returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.151. Police were forced to deploy OC spray to subdue a fight outside the Golf Club on October 8. Four males became involved in a brawl in the carpark after an earlier altercation within the Club. Police were able to gain control of the situation after which all were dispersed.Over the following days all involved were issued $300 fines for public nuisance.

B Coy complete surveillance patrol BRAVO Coy, 51 FNQR has just returned from Operation Resolute. OP.Resolute is the Australian Defence Forces contribution to the whole of Government effort to safeguard Australia’s national interests through the conduct of deterrence, surveillance, response and enforcement operations. OP Resolute was our major undertaking for the year. It was an extremely challenging but very rewarding operation. From Kowanyama to Weipa, some 315nm in small craft (tinnies) with eight recon and surveillance tasks over 11 days. A lot of information was gained by the patrol and it can be assured that the south western coastline of the Cape has had ‘eyes on’ from the boys. Additionally, Community Engagements were conducted by HQ personnel in all communities where possible. The lead-up training conducted at Weipa was very successful with the team zeroing their rifles one day then conducting bayonet fighting the next. PTE Wheeler reckons that if we can’t shoot em at least we can ‘stick em’. It was the longest coastal and riverine patrol ever undertaken by the unit in its modern history. All those soldiers of B Coy who completed the operation should be justifiably proud of their performance and have contributed in a large way to the national surveillance plan and the security of the Cape. – Major Jamie Heron

NATURE

Enormous, Clucky Visitors in Western Cape They’re Australia’s biggest flying bird, but have you noticed the pelicans around Western Cape at the moment? Now that it’s October, Pelicans in southern Australia are listening to their biological clocks. They’ll be looking for a mate and starting a family very soon after rains. Western Cape locals can be a buddy to clucky pelicans. Backyard Buddies is a free program run by Australia’s Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. Each month, you get a Backyard Buddies email (B-mail) with tips to make your backyard inviting and safe for native animals. “The Australian Pelican is an amazing creature,” said Mr Steve Corbett, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “It has the longest bill of any bird in the world and can fly up to 3,000 metres above sea level by hitching a ride on thermal currents of warm air.” “Look out for clucky pelicans around Western Cape. Pelicans develop special colouring on their bills and bill pouches when they’re ready to mate. The front two-thirds of the pouch turn scarlet, the rear third turns pink, and a dark line appears on either side.” “How can you tell which pelicans already have partners? Easy. Their courtship colours fade and the dark line on their bills becomes red. It’s a bit like a pelican

wedding band,” said Mr Corbett. “When a female pelican is ready to find a partner, she starts some strenuous exercise— either a long distance swim, walk or flight. Several males follow her, but eventually drop off as they run out of steam. The last male following will be her mate, and she leads him to a good nest site.” “Pelicans lay two to four pure white eggs in a scrape or basic nest on the ground. Usually only one chick survives because of competition amongst each other in the first few weeks. Pelicans breed in colonies of up to 40,000 birds on islands or secluded shores,” Mr Corbett said. “It’s a pretty odd sight to see an adult pelican feeding its young. The adult regurgitates partially digested food such as fish, crustaceans, tadpoles and so on from its stomach and the baby sticks its beak a long way down its parent’s throat to eat.” “After the parent thinks enough is enough and pulls away, the baby pelican throws a tantrum. It convulses violently, biting anything nearby and collapses on the ground, which can sometimes result in the pelican falling unconscious. This behaviour lasts for about a minute and is thought to be an exaggerated form of begging.” “There is a lot that Western Cape locals can do to be a buddy to these fascinating birds,” said Mr Corbett.

Pelican facts: • Australian Pelicans grow up to 1.8 metres long. • Australian Pelicans have a wingspan of up to 2.5 m. • The Australian Pelican’s large bill grows up to 50 cm in length. • The pelican’s stretchy bill pouch holds up to 13 litres! • Pelicans live for up to 25 years or more. • Pelicans can stay in the air for 24 hours by riding thermal currents, and can travel hundreds of kilometres in one go. • Flying Pelicans can reach speeds of up to 56 km per hour. Pelicans are mainly quiet, but during breeding periods listen out for their ‘orrh, thu-thuh, ah-ah-ahah’ and ‘uh-uhhr’ calls. “During periods of starvation, pelicans will eat seagulls, pigeons or ducks. They scoop them up in their bill pouches and swallow them whole, after much flapping and struggling. It is a really bizarre sight to see.

Your Lucky ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) You might be a little too full of yourself at the moment. You are good at organising the people around you. However you should do your best not to boss them around more than is absolutely necessary. Romance. This will be a good time for a few quiet evenings at home. A favourable aspect to Neptune later in the week will help to put you in a very impractical mood.

Don’t “accidentally” open a letter addressed to someone else. You may be so curious that you forget what you are doing. The person concerned won’t thank you for the intrusion. Romance. Your love-life will be having a short break at the moment. Your energy levels are high, so it won’t be too long before things start to pick up again.

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) You might be put in a difficult position by a friend. This person does not want to inconvenience you, but they may not realise the consequences of letting you down. Romance. Drop an issue which is not very important before it creates tension between you and your partner. If you persist you could end up in an argument which is difficult to get out of.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A mistake made by a friend may inconvenience you. If you are going to have to depend on this person again make sure that they are very clear about your feelings about this matter. Romance. Your partner will appreciate a small present, especially if it is something which you cannot normally afford to buy.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A favourable aspect to Mars will help you to be a little more assertive than usual this week. Romance. Someone you have been admiring from afar will suddenly take an interest in you. This person won’t take “no” for an answer! The more time you spend together the more you will grow to like them.

A call from out of the blue will cheer you up. This person will want to talk for hours, but you will be glad that they phoned. Romance. A meeting which you didn’t expect to take place will go extremely well. You will be thinking about this new friend a lot over the subsequent few days.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) An argument later in the week could be stressful if you don’t manage to keep a proper perspective on the situation. Romance. A colleague at work who hasn’t shown much interest in you in the past will suddenly want to see much more of you. Don’t be too suspicious of this person – they mean well.

Grants available for sun safety CANCER Council Queensland and Queensland Health are calling on Far North Queensland organisations who require funding assistance for SunSmart initiatives to apply for the 2011 SunSmart Grant Scheme. The SunSmart Grant Scheme was launched last month and aims to support skin cancer prevention and encourage all Far North Queensland organisations to adopt a SunSmart policy. SunSmart Co-ordinator at Cancer Council Queensland, Rachel Adams, said the SunSmart Grant Scheme aims to assist organisations who have limited funds to work towards increased sun safety. “The SunSmart Grant Scheme provides grants to organisations in Far North Queensland, whose primary focus group is children aged 12 years and younger, to help them purchase items that will enhance sun protection for children in their care and promote sun safe behaviour.” “This Scheme will ensure that access to vital sun protection is available across the Far North Queensland community and will contribute to the prevention of skin cancer which is a significant public health problem in Queensland,” she said. “There is still time to apply for the SunSmart Grants Scheme and I encourage all applicable organisations to think about how they could benefit from such a grant.”

Rugby league set to blitz the Cape RUGBY league is building its forces in the Cape as the QRL, ARL, North Queensland Cowboys and Northern Pride will be working together to promote rugby league by visiting Coen, Lockhart River, Weipa, Mapoon and Aurukun with a rugby league blitz. The QRL and ARL will be represented by development officers Cameron Miller and Robbie Moore, while the North Queensland Cowboys will be represented by development officer Dean Payne and NYC under 20s grand final player Chris Gresmuhl. Northern Pride will

be represented by the manager of the Take Pride Program and squad members Francis Mosby and pointscoring machine, Chey Bird. All parties will be holding coaching clinics in Coen, Lockhart River,

Mapoon, and Aurukun as well as visiting schools. The Weipa Western Cape College will benefit from the visit as all parties will be involved in the development camp held at the school this week.

Next Harrier run for breast cancer Organisations can apply for the grant and contribute the funding to creating new shade structures (fixed and portable), sun safe hats, uniforms, tree planting and sunscreen provision. “This list is not exhaustive and innovative ideas will be considered,” Ms Adams said.

Applications close at 5pm on November 11, 2011. Funded projects must be finalised by March 30, 2012. To apply for a SunSmart Grant, contact Rachel Adams at Cancer Council Queensland on (07) 4690 5803, email racheladams@cancerqld.org.au or apply online at www.cancerqld.org.au.

THE Hash run on Monday, October 31 will be a run for breast cancer. Those lapsed runners/walkers, and all interested are invited to join in the run to start at 8 Hibiscus at 5.45pm next Monday. Wear something pink and bring a donation which will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Afterwards there will be “pink” nosh, although the drinks will still be amber!

This run is set by a BC Survivor. Outhouse’s run from Crag this week was a bit of a fizzer as directions were so sketchy it was too hard to find the area. However those who found the right spot were treated to a tricky, adventurous run. Good job Ovum had a four-wheel drive pram. See you for the October 31 breast cancer run . On on, Handbag.

Weipa Squash Club finals get underway WEIPA Squash Club is on the downhill run towards the finals of the second season of squash fixtures which will commencing on October 25, 2011. In A grade, Jackie Chan will be up against Tony Jaa with the winner going straight to the grand final, and Jet Li challenges Bruce Lee with only the winning team to have a second chance. Check your availability as semi and preliminary finals may be pre-played, but not grand finals! This week in A grade Bruce Lee’s A1 Owen Witt convincingly won the first game against Chow Yun Fat rival Luke Millard. Luke fought back to take the second game, however Owen must have thought that was close, and knuckled down to take the next two (3-1). A2 Glen Egan came close in the first game against seasoned veteran Rod Bielby, however Rod’s finesse shone through with his deceiving soft serves, then long shots to the back corner, and he claimed the match (0-3). A3 Darren Chapman did it tough in his first game against

Wendy Long but judging by the scores the next couple were a cinch (3-0). A4 Alex Dunn had his best night of the season when he defeated Jimmy Baira in a fairly evenly contested match (3-0). Jackie Chan and Tony Jaa were at loggerheads all night with all players playing at their peak although A1 Dave Edward would probably disagree when he went into battle against Rod Wawrzyniak and came out second best. Not the result he wished for after the intense and lengthy games they played with lots of handouts (2-3). A2 Nick Brookes also had to change into top gear after defeating Aaron Schleich in the first game, however Aaron was hot on his heels all the way in the second game forcing it to a “long” game, then winning the next game. Nick found overdrive and, one point the difference, won the fourth (3-1). A3 Paul Ellison (sub) lost the first game, which probably gave Steve Lugsdin a boost of confidence and the hope that his luck would last, but then Paul went on to win the next three games (3-1).

A4 Ben Tantau met his match in Chrisden Russ when they faced each other with Ben winning the first game, then Chrisden the next two (with the third stretching to “long”), but Ben powered through to win the last two games, even though Chrisden got a second wind in the fifth (3-2). The match between IP Man’s A1 Tom Murray and Jet Li’s Lukas Dorsett was a spectator-friendly marathon ending in applause for the sportsmanship shown. From the moment they launched into action until the last ball was struck (which was extremely lengthy), and after many handouts, both players returned unbelievably difficult shots from all over the Court, and many excellent rallies. Tom took the first two games, then Lukas grew defensive, and with steely determination and perhaps a little more agility, left the court the victor (2-3). A2 Ross Hyytinen defeated John Rugby (sub) in three games but there was much skill displayed by both players (3-0). A3 Jay

Murray did the side proud when she went head to head with Bill Nason and only conceded one game to him, consequently taking out the match (3-1). A4 Shane Spagnol demonstrated his skill when he defeated veteran Jeff Ball in the first game, then struggled to a narrow loss in the second game, but then showed his prowess when he dragged Jeff Ball down in the last two games (3-1). At the time the Bully goes to print, the semi-finals will have commenced and one A grade team will already be through to the finals, and B grade will be preparing to play their first semis. In the last round of B grade fixtures before semi-finals commence, there were a lot of absences/forfeits because of a conflict of interest for some of our teachers, but it was a good night for those who played and I apologise that I do not have the results to hand. Best of luck to all the qualifying teams competing in all the finals! Yours squashfully Ruth Harris

Steve Lugsdin and Paul Ellison do battle in the A3 game.

Ross Hyytinen and John Rugby display their squash skills.

WONTULP-BI-BUYA COLLEGE

We have copies of the following books available for purchase • The Fishtrap Makers – Kos and Abob • Trigger Fish and Trevally – Nagag and Geigi • The Peacemaker • How Kangaroo Found His Tail • Milbi Dabaar • The Beyond is Near

For more information on Wontulp-Bi-Buya or these books Freecall 1800 065 607 I HAVE been asked, what if it blows up on the Billfish weekend? If that happens, all those that are fishing can make that decision. With the interest being shown BillďŹ sh weekend is shaping up to be one of the highlights on the Weipa calendar .There have been plenty of anglers practicing their bait rigging, Gar and PaciďŹ c Leatherskins (Spinyback QueenďŹ sh), and the Marlin seem to be playing the game as well. Not many Sailfish being sighted but the Marlin make up for them with fish over 200kg being hooked or sighted. Everyone is telling me that you have to take a lot of baits when trolling for BillďŹ sh as you hook a lot of Mackerel, Tuna and Trevally, not to mention the

Boobby birds that swipe a few. Bait is not that easy to get either. I have managed to get five cartons of Gar, but that won’t be enough, so I would suggest everyone try and get some of those Queenies, but only the Spinyback ones as the rest have a minimum size limit of 50cm. There are plenty of big Gar in Boyd’s Bay with some small schools of Scad and Bonito about which make excellent troll baits. Don’t forget the free bait rigging night at the GolďŹ es is at 6pm November 6 and I have plenty of nomination forms at the Newsagency if you want a copy. As everyone should be aware the Barra season is now closed until January 30. There is no such ďŹ sh species as a Pink-eyed

Salmon or a Camp Barra, they all have to go back. I personally think it is a ridiculous law, closing the season a month earlier than the east coast. Just think about it, you can still catch Barra on the NT side of the Gulf, the Barra don’t move over to our side when the closure is in force. I have inquired a couple of times with ďŹ sheries but don’t get the question answered, and I don’t mean our local blokes, I went straight to the top to no avail. They don’t seem to realise our tourists season stops when the Barra season closes, and the tourists head straight to the east coast or NT. Another month of tourists would do wonders for the town. It gives me the “you know whatâ€? - I feel better now I’ve had my little gripe.

Back to fishing...haven’t heard of too many Grunter being caught except one in-the-know angler suggested I try Kurumba! Jacks and Fingermark are in good numbers around the creek mouths. A couple of tourists have just come back from a week at the Jackson River and told me they caught over a 100 but only kept a couple to eat. They showed me a pic of two ďŹ sh around 55cm and a Barra over a metre not knowing the season was closed. They had a bit of rain one night otherwise the weather was brilliant except around Cullen Point when they got back. I am looking for some pics for next week so if you have any email them to the address above.
