DJ’s dream comes true A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy from the Aurukun community had a dream come true on New Year’s even when he saw fireworks for the first time, thanks to a dedicated former policewoman and a gift from the Sydney Lord Mayor. Delwyn “DJ� Gothachalkenin arrived in Sydney on December 31, 2011 as a special guest at the Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks display’s Dreamscape party at the Dawes Point Viewing Area, where he received VIP treatment and enjoyed one of the best views of the fireworks in Sydney. Sydney woman Genevieve Delves met Delwyn when she was working as a sport and recreation officer in the Aurukun community, 100 kilometres south of Weipa.

Ms Delves had planned to work in the community for three months, but ended up staying for 10 months “doing a bit of everything�: helping families with their tax and banking, encouraging teenagers to learn to drive, organising children’s birth certificates for boarding school applications, and acting as a liaison between the community and visiting media and dignitaries. “Once I got a bit of a feel for it, I felt I had some unfinished business, that I had some little goals that I wanted to achieve there. One of them was setting up a rugby league team for the men, which really brought the community together, and then I also met Delwyn,� Ms Delves said. UU continued page 2

Lucky escape for driver A RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa mine operator had to apply emergency procedures at the Andoom mine recently, after spotting a private vehicle driving on the haul road. The quick actions of the operator resulted in all trucks stopping operation until the vehicle was off the mine site. Jo-Anne Scarini, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa operations general manager, said the prompt action from the operator

meant that no serious incident occurred. “An interaction between a heavy and light vehicle is one of our biggest risks, and with terrible consequences, so it is important that unauthorised vehicles stay clear of haul roads,� Ms Scarini said. The vehicle was spotted on the haul road located two kilometres east of Vyces Crossing. “Our incident investigation has identified that this vehicle

has driven across over Vyces Crossing and then travelled onto a haul road in east Andoom,� Ms Scarini said. “This behaviour is a concern as a lot of the area surrounding Vyces Crossing is active mine area where heavy equipment operates. “In addition, driving through this crossing also impacts the environment and this culturally significant area.� Vyces Crossing is a popular

swimming area and a significant place for Traditional Owners. Ms Scarini said there was an established car park area and bins for visitors to use at Vyces Crossing. “We ask that people please use these amenities and stick to the established roads to ensure the area is not damaged and they do not unwittingly travel into active mining areas,� Ms Scarini said.

“DJ, out of all the kids, was the one person who stood out, who really knew how to give. “He would see me 150 metres up the road in 40-degree heat, and if he had two cans of Coke, he would sprint up, give me a can and go, ‘hey, this is for you’.� The two formed a bond and Ms Delves made a deal with Delwyn that if he attended school every day for the first term of 2011, she would take him to Sydney for the Easter holidays. “The little guy started turning up to school and he went every single day,� Ms Delves said. “So he came down to Sydney and we went horse riding, surfing, and to the Easter Show, and when he returned to Aurukun he kept going to school, every single day last year.� Ms Delves said that in the back of Delwyn’s mind was the 9pm family fireworks display, which he had watched

on her laptop during a storm in Aurukun last New Year’s Eve. “He was just so excited watching it on the computer and he said, ‘I want to go and see the countdown’, and I think that he thought if he went to school every day last year then he would get to see the fireworks,� she said. “So he went to school every day and he ended up getting an award at the end of this year from the Acting Premier of Queensland, because his literacy and numeracy standards were excellent.� Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore heard about Delwyn and Ms Delves’ story and immediately offered the pair exclusive tickets to the Dreamscape party at the Dawes Point Viewing Area. “Genevieve has done so much for a community that is so far away from her home in Sydney and I am also inspired by Delwyn who, with the smallest

of encouragement, has been able to achieve so much,� Ms Moore said. “I’m glad we were able to help make their New Year’s Eve one that they will remember for a long time.� Ms Moore is now hoping to create a legacy

from DJ’s dream. “Our dream is to partner with the Aurukun Mayor, education department and community to provide the same incentive in 2012 for other children in Cape York, and our own community,� she said.

“The details of this dream will be discussed in the near future and we hope to get a plan in place soon. “DJ made a commitment, and from that his dream came true. I hope we can make some more dreams happen in 2012.�

The new drop-off station makes recycling and recovery easier, which will reduce the amount of waste going into the Evans Landing landfill.

EVANS Landing landfill users will notice a change in how they drop off rubbish with the new waste drop-off station now open. The building is part of Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s $2 million upgrade to the 30 year old facility. Tim Ryan, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Environment Operations specialist, said the new building would enable rubbish

and recyclables to be more easily segregated, improving the landfill’s overall environmental performance. “The upgraded facility includes a new drop-off station, located adjacent to the weigh bridge, and feature a number of skips for the different types of waste,� Mr Ryan said. “People will drive across the weigh bridge to the building,

where they park undercover and drop off their rubbish in the appropriate skip. The facility enables an easier and safer drop-off than the current setup.� This type of drop-off station is common at landfill sites across the country. They reduce the amount of waste going into landfills by enabling items to be recovered and recycled. “We encourage everyone to

use the facility correctly and place rubbish into the right skip. The Cleanaway staff are there to assist if people have any questions on how to drop rubbish off,� Mr Ryan said. Weipa SES assist in Torres Strait search and rescue FOUR Weipa SES Group members were involved in a search and rescue operation in the Torres Strait last weekend. Local controller, Trevor Snodgrass received a phone call from Emergency Management Queensland in Brisbane at 2am on Sunday morning requesting assistance with the

search and rescue operation after a vessel failed to arrive at its destination. The 14-foot dinghy with 11 people on board left Murray Island on Saturday, January 7 and failed to arrive on Daru Island (Papua New Guinea) that afternoon as expected. Mr Snodgrass, along with Weipa SES Groups members

Peter Siegmeier, Jason Bosuen and Sean Anthony, boarded planes in Weipa at 5.30am on Sunday morning to participate in the search as air observers. The local SES members spent around five hours in the air during the search, with Mr Snodgrass’ plane travelling as far as Daru Island, Papua New Guinea.

The dinghy and it’s occupants were located safe and well on Sunday afternoon. It is believed the vessel suffered mechanical problems and was forced to stop at Warrior Reef where the skipper onboard was able to repair the boat and continue on to Daru Island. No one onboard received an injuries.

Bridge maintenance complete THE dive work as part of Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s 2011 bridge maintenance program is now complete with the final steel splints installed during the last week of December. Graham Mannix, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Mission River and Andoom Creek bridge repairs engineer, said he was pleased with the progress of the 2011 bridge maintenance program. “Although the last phase of the program involved working with

decreased visibility and stronger tidal flows, we finished work just three days behind schedule,� Mr Mannix said. “On behalf of the Rio Tinto project team, including Pacific Marine Group Divers, we wish to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience this year during a sometimes quite disruptive process.� This year is the final year of lengthy, planned road closures. “We will be carrying out further maintenance in the next four years.

However, due to the nature of the work, it will not require bridge closures to traffic for as long or as often,� Mr Mannix said. The Mission River Bridge is almost four decades old and requires maintenance due to corrosion of the underwater supporting piles and concrete deterioration. This work is the third year in a longterm bridge structural maintenance program to ensure the longevity of the bridges is sustained.

Construction of new buildings and a playground area at Cape Kids is now in it’s final phase.

CONSTRUCTION of the multimillion dollar upgrade and expansion to the Cape Kids childcare centre will reach a key milestone this week when the refurbishment of the existing building kicks off. Shedding light on Christmas injustice I WAS very surprised to read the results of the Christmas Lights competition. I checked out all the entrants which were

listed by the Weipa Town Authority and I was surprised, when reading the results in the Western Cape Bulletin, that a house which wasn’t even on the entrants list came second. I was also very surprised to see that the amazing effort at 36 Alstonia Drive, Nanum, which I had picked as the winner, didn’t even

get a mention. I think the judging panel next year needs to include some independent community members to ensure these kind of injustices don’t happen again. To the occupants of 36 Alstonia, I think your lights were outstanding. Enjoyer of Weipa Christmas Lights

All eyes on Weipa king tides AS Weipa residents prepare for king tides this summer, they also have the chance to visualise the rising waters along our coast by photographing the regional king tides event. Green Cross Australia and Surf Life Saving Queensland are asking coastal communities to take photos of sea levels during the upcoming king tides season as part of Witness King Tides - an initiative to better prepare Queensland for a future where sea levels are higher than they are today. Mara Bún, CEO of Green Cross Australia, said taking photos of sea levels could reveal what coasts might look like under such conditions in the future. “Witness King Tides is about gathering visual data to prepare ourselves for the future, while at the same time connecting people

to the coast and the environmental issues at hand,” Ms Bún said. “Given that 85 per cent of Queensland’s population lives within 50km of the coast, it is vital that we know what to expect in the coming years.” The project has been designed to encourage Queenslanders living near the coast to go out and see firsthand the potential effects of rising sea levels, and then to share their images online via the Witness King Tides portal. Ms Bún said recent studies had found rising sea levels were being considered a significant contributing factor to changes in future lifestyles. “This project will help generate awareness about sea level rise, while creating a visual record of areas that may be impacted,” she said. “We are all responsible for

preserving and protecting our environment and this is Queensland’s opportunity to lend a hand.” Weipa residents can witness nearby king tides at Evans Landing on January 22 at 3.12pm. Participants can upload their photographs to the Witness King Tides web portal www.witnesskingtides.org to create a mosaic of snapshots for future climate planning. The website also features information on the 2012 Summer King Tide events and tips for taking useful photos. The project is supported by the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, and Queensland Government Department of Environment and Resource Management, Surf Lifesaving Queensland, the Queensland Centre for Photography, the Australian Coastal Society.

Don’t net a fine – use the right fishing gear Drawing on life experiences WHILE holidays and weekends provide a great time to cast a net for some bait and prawns, recreational fishers are reminded to check their nets to ensure they comply with the rules. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) senior compliance officer Michael Mikitis said there were some simple rules around what nets could and couldn’t be used. “There are two types of nets recreational fishers can use in Queensland – seine and cast nets,â€? he said. “A recreational seine net (or bait net) must: • be no longer than 16m in length • have a mesh size no greater than 28mm • be no more than 3m in drop • not have a pocket • not be fixed when used. “A recreational cast net must not be more than 3.7m in length and have a mesh size no greater than 28mm. “Anything outside of these nets is considered commercial fishing apparatus and recreational fishers can not use or possess them.â€? Mr Mikitis said the use of incorrect fishing apparatus

could incur big fines. “An on-the-spot fine of $1000 for unlawfully using or possessing commercial fishing apparatus applies,� he said. “The maximum penalty for this offence is $30,000. “All recreational fishers that use nets should be aware of the rules.

COEN State School and Aurukun’s Western Cape College will be part of the 60 regional Queensland venues to participate in a program designed just for kids as part of the Matisse: Drawing Life exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art. The Drawing Life for Kids on Tour: Celebrating Artists program will stimulate children’s imaginations from as far north as the Torres Strait, to Cloncurry in the West and a number of locations throughout the South East. The Drawing Life for Kids on Tour highlights the creative expression of drawing and was developed by the Queensland Art Gallery’s Children’s Art Centre. Participants will be given a drawing journal to encourage them to record their daily lives, aspirations and imaginings through drawing. The journal is based on the Queensland Art Gallery’s publication Drawing Life for Kids: My Art Journal, and encourages children to play with ideas from everyday life. Full-colour drawing templates, focusing on celebratory moments in a child’s life such as birthdays and sleepovers, will allow them to share

with family and friends. Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said drawing underpinned all of Matisse’s work throughout his career, regardless of whether it was painting, sculpture or print. “Matisse was first introduced to drawing by his mother and he drew all of his life,� Mr Ellwood said. “Often using his drawings as a basis for larger works, he also took great pleasure in simply drawing life as he saw it around him, including his family and friends. “Just like Matisse, children are invited to draw life as they see it, keeping their art journal close at hand and recording their daily lives.� Drawing Life for Kids on Tour: Celebrating Artists is proudly supported by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and is held as part of the Matisse: Drawing Life exhibition program, on display at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane until March 4, 2012. Don’t be complacent with dengue mosquitoes QUEENSLAND Health is encouraging North Queenslanders to continue to take normal precautions ahead of the wet season this year, in spite of trial releases of dengueresistant mosquitoes near Cairns earlier in the year. North Queensland Public Health Medical Officer Dr Steven Donohue said people still needed to be vigilant in removing mosquito breeding sites over the coming months. “As is typically the case going into the wet season, we are expecting to see dengue mosquitoes breeding around homes and businesses,� Dr Donohue said. “The trial releases of experimental dengue mosquitoes infected with the Wolbachia bacteria – which is believed to make them unable to transmit the dengue virus – so far have only occurred in the Yorkey’s Knob and Gordonvale areas near Cairns. “Wherever you are, do not assume mosquitoes or wrigglers will be harmless. “The dengue-resistant mosquito trials are wonderful science and may work in the future, but we are still in the early

stages of this research, so it is important people do not become complacent in removing breeding sites around homes and businesses.’’ Dengue fever is a viral disease that is spread between people by infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. This particular species of mosquito only breeds in water-filled containers around homes and worksites, and bites during the daytime. Common dengue mozzie breeding sites include tyres, buckets, toys and pot plant bases. Residents and business also should also ensure that roof gutters are not blocked and breeding mosquitoes. “Dengue mosquitoes only breed around homes and in urban areas, and not in swamps or creeks,’’ Dr Donohue said. To help prevent any

outbreaks of dengue fever: • Once a week, check your yard or property for mosquito breeding. Tip out, flush out, throw away or store dry any containers holding water in which mosquitoes can breed • Wear appropriate insect repellent to avoid being bitten • Use indoor surface spray, mozzie zappers and coils around the house to discourage mosquitoes. Dr Donohue said dengue fever caused sudden fever with headaches, which could be severe, muscle and joint pains, a rash and in some cases, vomiting and diarrhoea. Funding boost for Lockhart State School

LOCKHART State School has been awarded more than $7100 in funding as part of the State Government’s Special Building Needs program. The funding will enable the school to replace the rusted sections of chainwire to the front boundary fence and gate. The work will be programmed for completion as soon as possible, with every effort being made to minimise disruption to the day to day running of the school. Qbuild, the State Government’s construction and maintenance division, will manage the project.

Free Napranum bus service extended FOLLOWING the Tuesday, January 10, 2012 meeting the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council has decided to extend the free bus service between Napranum and Weipa until March 31, 2012. Acting Chief Executive Officer, Amos Njaramba said the community had embraced the service and the extension would be welcomed. The Napranum to Weipa return service runs twice daily and includes dropping community members off at their home with their shopping. The bus service departs from the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council office at 9am and 2pm and Woolworths shopping centre at 11am and 4pm.

SunSmart grant approved THE Queensland Government is providing $6,212 worth of awards to schools, early childhood centres and community groups, to keep kids in the Cook Shire sun-safe. Presented by the Queensland Government and Cancer Council Queensland, the recipients will use the funds to increase sun protection for children. Weipa Early Childhood Education received a $330.17 SunSmart grant for bucket hats and sunscreen in celebration of National Skin Cancer Action Week.

AS the Lord and his disciples continued their walkabout through Judea, they would have stopped for a rest here and there, and camped in certain places, and no doubt the Lord would have been taking notice of their yarns. It must have troubled him to overhear that his disciples still saw him as the all-conquering Messiah/King who would free the Jews from their oppression at the hands of the Romans. In Mark Ch 10 and verses 32-34 we read of the Lord warning his disciples once again that they are going to witness him being handed over to the Jewish religious leaders. But this time the Lord says that they will condemn him to death and then hand him over to the Gentiles, who will

“make fun of him, spit on him, whip him, and kill him; but three days later he will rise to life.” If they gave it some thought, it would have been around this time that they should have realised that he was going to die by crucifixion. Because the only Gentile authority higher than the Jewish leaders were the Romans, who took special pleasure in punishing troublemakers by crucifying them, after a savage whipping. With regards to the disciples being so stuck on a certain text of Scripture, in this case on Jesus being a Warrior/King as foretold in the Old Testament, (along with other texts showing him as the Suffering Servant/ King etc), I sometimes wonder if I am not like the disciples. However I do pray to

the Lord that I will not stubbornly cling to my own interpretations of a text because it suits me, but be willing to heed the Spirit. And like St Paul’s description of a good Bible student, who, when he was giving encouragement to a young Christian called Timothy, said the following words. “Do your best to win full approval in God’s sight, as a worker who is not ashamed of his work, one who correctly teaches the message of God’s truth.” (2 Timothy Ch 2 v 15). I think these words of encouragement are good for all who love the Lord and study his word, the Bible. The Lord be with you and bless you and yours throughout the year. Rev Michael Connolly

Spilla's Spin... on rugby league RUGBY league is back bigger and better in 2012. Hello rugby league fans and welcome to my first column for the year where I’ll be covering every great story in the game. I would just like to say a huge thank you to the township of Weipa, and the whole of the Cape, for accepting me in promoting our great game. I have had an exciting 2011 up here and I’m sure 2012 will be even better, as we have a lot of rugby league activities planned. For the juniors good times are ahead as we will be playing footy from February all the way through to September this year on a weekly basis. As for our seniors we will have the Weipa wet season comp, as well as the Cape Community Cluster comp. There will be no Foley Shield this year for our Remote Areas but there will be the inaugural 2012 Remote Challenge which will see the Central Cape, Three Rivers, NPA and Torres Strait battling it out for Cape York supremacy. The winner of this competition will play the winner from the Western Outback in a curtainraiser to the Northern Pride in Cairns. Our Weipa juniors will also get the chance to compete with the junior Central Cape Suns, going down to Townsville to

play in the Laurie Spina Shield in June, as well as attending a Cowboys game against the Canberra Raiders. There will also be oppurtunities for our younger generation to tryout for various representive teams during the season. The successful women’s team, the Cape Kodals, will also be showcasing their skills throughout 2012 as they travel far and wide all over Queensland playing in various competitions, providing themselves further oppurtunities to succeed in life and on the football field. What a year the 2012 NRL season is building up to as each team prepares themselves for one hell of a battle. Many teams have had several changes, with premiers Manly moving coach Des Hasler on and stalwart Geoff Toovey taking over the reigns. Will the Broncos be a force without the great Darren Lockyer? Only time will tell. I do know one thing, the Cowboys will be there when it counts with Jonathon Thurston and Matty Bowen providing the magic we all love to watch. Our local team from Cairns, the Northern Pride, will be participating in the Queensland Cup and will also be visiting our area during the year. Stay tuned for more footy news... SPILLA

Golfers tee-off new year program THE Carpentaria Golf Club started the new year with a single stroke on Saturday, January 7. The winner. with a 69 nett was Lee Grainger from Match who had a 71 nett. The NTPs went to Michael Newman and Lee Grainger.

Sunday’s event was a single Stableford and the winner with 40 points was Ryan Aspinall from Ben Lawton who had 39 points, and the NTPs went to Jono, Ollie and Kerry. The competitions this weekend are a Single Stableford on Saturday, January 14 and on

Hashers hit the track running Run 1625 Nine Hashers, two dogs A SMALL number of hardy post-Christmas Hashers turned up to follow a trail that Straw had put a lot of thought into. Let’s regroup at John Evans bridge. After more deep thinking, onto the Fishing Lodge from which it was too far for Seaman to walk home at night. Where to now? Down the dirt trail over the bridge, after stopping for a chat, then back to the hooch. A few graciously prepared nibbles, enough chairs for all and sufficient refreshments for rehydration purposes. Boo Boo wanted to be somewhere else and suffered several slips and falls to show his determination. Because Killem had the hooch, he was a little late getting away for his dinner. Seaman will set the run from Putts Palms crossing on January 2 2012, which gives you a day to get over New Year’s celebrations. ON ON Quasimodo Run 1626 12 Hashers, two dogs SEAMAN and friends had been busy setting up a

circuit to give the hashers a post New Year work out. Numbers worked just right; a team of four runners against a team of four walkers/runners and a small team of four spectators. The first challenge was firstly taken on by the old (or should that be odd) couple. Quasi was so pumped up he didn’t see the first marker, ran too far and too slowly to put the runners team behind the eight ball, but the other team members aggressively brought the team home for a win. Catching our breath, we walked to the next test, a slalom around the coconut palms - a giant slalom for the runners - and South Italy showed great sibling rivalry to pip Seaman by a couple of palms. At this stage the handicapper was under scrutiny. The next test, in full view of passers-by, was that of dressing, running, keeping your hat on, undressing and tagging your team member. Sibling complacency, then strong sibling competitiveness reversed the previous result. Well done captain. Runners two, Walkers one with only one test to go. There was serious talk

of a possible gruelling tie breaker (heart breaker more likely). All fours or lollipops, that was the choice. Rules were only made to be bent, or broken, or modified in the case of Seaman using Yogi to keep four on the ground, except rounding the tree when Yogi was literally flying. The runners got home, no tie breaker required. Rehydration was desperately needed, with an optional dip in the crossing; fortunately only Boot Boy bared all. Well done Seaman - no one died. Don’t forget, there’s no competition in Weipa HHH. Boot and South Italy will set the run from 30 Christie for a start at 17:45 on January 9, 2012. ON ON Quasimodo Run 1627 37 Hashers, 5 dogs BOOT had been busy, not only setting the run, but ensuring there was a good turnout. Parking was at a premium; a small price to pay for what was to unfold. The run was set in high visibility pink markers, obviously supporting breast

cancer. Initially we roamed around Nanum with appropriate re-groups for the walkers to catch up with the superb athletes leading the way. To suitably improve the workout, the markers led us onto the sand (or around it for the wimps). All hashers know that three markers indicate a re-group, but with the fragmentation of the pack we ended up with three different re-groups between the bridge and the shops. Fortunately we had one last consolidated meeting before returning to the hooch. Thanks must go to Boot for a great run, all new and old runners for turning up, South Italy for some very tasty nosh, Killem for bringing just enough refreshments and last but not least to Aaron who will be the first virgin runner, yet unnamed, to nominate to set a run. size can only increase. Fresh Prawn is probably the main bait used, with the Mission River bridge, the mouth of Roberts and Grandma’s, and Evans Landing worth a try. Another common species around this time of year, Fingermark or Golden Snapper, are being caught out around the channel markers, with Squid or Prawn the best bait. There are also plenty of Mackerel and Queenies out around the

markers so try some wire trace if you keep getting bitten off. For Mackerel try some metal jigs, around 40-60 grams, and for a bit of bait ďŹ shing Pillies on 6/0 ganged hooks are the go. To keep the Pillies together get some dental oss and run round, and round the pilly from the tail to the head a couple of times. That should make them falling apart. There is another meeting at the Carpentaria Golf club on

January 16 at 7pm for those of you who are interested in Weipa game ďŹ shing. The meeting is going to cover the next competition date, rules and regulations, and when the next tackle night is going to be. RARL will not play in 2012 Foley Shield Alf Wilson story

REMOTE Area Rugby League (RARL) will not be part of the prestigious North Queensland Foley Shield competition this year which will feature three powerhouse sides – Townsville, Mackay and Cairns. Last year one RARL team which competed comprised players picked from the KRL, NPA, Cape Cluster and Three Rivers competitions.

This season Townsville will field a combined side, while the Cairns team will also include players which had been under the Innisfail/Eacham banner. Every player in the strong 11-club Cairns and District competition, which includes many from the TSI, Hopevale and Cape York, will be eligible for selection in the Cairns team. Barra season opens at midday January 30, and we now have minimum size of 58cm, the same as the east coast. Local boys kicking goals with Rio Tinto’s football program WESTERN Cape locals, Ben Masso and Miles Kerridan, travelled to Sydney in December, 2011 to join 50 young indigenous men from across the country taking part in the national Rio Tinto “Footy Means Business� program. Ben Laidlaw, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Community Relations and Town manager, said the week-long camp formed part of a year-long leadership development program linking young indigenous men with mainstream employment and educational opportunities. “Footy Means Business provides 18 to 24-year old indigenous men with exposure to elite AFL programs and training, along with networking opportunities in corporate environments to strengthen leadership and teamwork skills,� Mr Laidlaw said. “We should all be proud of Ben and Miles as they have been selected not primarily on their football ability, but on how they engage with their communities and their potential to serve as role models.� The camp in Sydney

included leadership sessions about identity and culture, decision making, teamwork, communication, problem solving and goal setting. The participants were also guests at the 2011 AFL National Draft,

held at the home of the Greater Western Sydney Giants in Blacktown. Mr Laidlaw said a key component of the program was the matching of participants with a mentor drawn from Rio Tinto and AFL staff.
