River Embley says farewell to Weipa
THE ore carrier, River Embley made her final voyage from Weipa to Gladstone on Saturday afternoon after 29 years of service. The SS Embley, and her sistership River Boyne, were specifically designed for the bauxite trade between Weipa and Gladstone. Her keel was laid in 1982 in Nagasaki, Japan and under the
guidance of her first Master, Captain Liddle, she arrived in Weipa on July 3, 1983 after sailing a distance of 3231 miles with an average speed of 11.55 knots. The twin funnels of the sisterships have been a landmark signature for the vessels, which were advanced ships of their time when fuel prices were very high. The SS Embley made a total of 816 voyages, carrying
56,340,000 tonnes of bauxite, and 852,000 tonnes of alumina on occasional voyages from Gladstone to Newcastle. During her tenure she travelled a total distance of 1,632,000 nautical miles and burnt 1,836,000 tonnes of coal. The grand old carrier will be leaving Gladstone at the end of April, bound for Singapore to be handed over to new owners.

Representatives from the North Queensland Cowboys rugby league football club were in Weipa last week to launch the Learn Earn Legend! program at the Western Cape College. The program aims to provide Indigenous students enrolled in years 11 and 12 in North Queensland schools the support they need to complete their secondary education and move into further study, training or employment. Funded by the federal government, and supported by the NRL, the Cowboys will use their expansive corporate network and education partners to assist students to establish their career pathways, become work ready and improve the school-to-work transition. The launch was attended by visiting careers expo attendees, and year 11 and 12 WCC students and teachers. Pictured with Cowboys player Preston Campbell (far left), and former NRL player Carl Webb are Sheldan Gilbert and Kodie Jia Craige, along with Cowboys representatives. Sheldan and Kodie were presented with Cowboys jumpers for the input they gave to Learn Earn Legend! activities on Friday.

Eye f the
o Cyclone I SEE Warren Entsch has been banging on about shooting crocodiles again. You have to admire his persistence; he has been talking about it for years and years. He has no problem at all with the idea of blasting the odd monster lizard. You would be excused for seeing him as some sort of Crocodile Dundee. No, let me rephrase that. You would not be excused for seeing him as a sort of Crocodile Dundee. He does
not wear a hat with crocodile claws in the hatband, and his silhouette is - how shall I put this politely? - his silhouette is a little dissimilar. For all that, Warren is a proud northerner and he does know his crocs. You have only to watch him pounding the lectern to see his heredity shine through (he is descended from a long line of crocodiles on his mother’s side). His argument is that we have far too many big, old and
very cranky crocs, and some of them are not in Parliament. These fearsome animals are not only very dangerous to people, they are happy to gobble up smaller crocs too. They are a roadblock to progress. They no longer know how to pick up the girls and start a new family, so they are not even extending the dominance of crocodile kind. Warren’s solution? It’s easy. Import a few rich Americans and Germans, and let them play at being big game hunters. These men (they’re nearly always men and not women) are prepared to cough up a fortune to shoot a trophy animal and take bits of it home. Sounds like a win-win-win proposition. The locals will be happy because the monsters go off to be restaurant ornaments in Las Vegas. Smaller crocs will be happy, because they get a new pond to play in, and
the tourism industry will be delighted because of all the money the intrepid hunters will bring with them. Unfortunately, it’s not possible. Somewhere in a filing cabinet in Canberra is an immutable regulation that says no shooting and - most importantly - no trophies. Can’t be changed. We are all helpless in the hands of the bureaucrats, and the bureaucrats say...Isn’t it time for another latte? Believe me, if you happen to trip over a fresh pile of crocodile poo and decide to take some home to show mother in Frankfurt, you will definitely be charged with international smuggling. Seriously; I’m not exaggerating. We have made even crocodile poo contraband, let alone skins or bones. Now, if only we had the commonsense to feed the bureaucrats to the crocs...

Community mourns sudden death of mayor THE community of Aurukun is in mourning following the sudden death of it’s muchrespected incumbent mayor. It is believed Thapich Pootchemunka became ill on Sunday afternoon and was flown to Cairns, but died later that night. Tributes have poured in for the dedicated leader who championed welfare reform and alcohol management. Federal member for Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said he first met Mr Pootchemunka in 2004 and said he always found him to be very, very committed to his community. “He was never afraid to embrace controversial initiatives that he believed were in the best interests of his community, Mr Entsch said. “He was absolutely committed to welfare reform...he wanted to see kids attending school and always had the dream of young Wik people being world travellers, being able to pick up the Blackberry and
speak to their elders on country. “He had a great sense of pride and saw welfare reform as a means of achieving that through education and employment, creating opportunities to open up the world to young Wik people. Mr Entsch said he was deeply saddened by the loss of such a leader at the relatively young age of 50. “It seems to be the case in many of our Indigenous communities that those who are achieving the most seem to leave us too soon, he said. “That was the calibre of the man. But there is no doubt that he is leaving us with a lasting legacy, and he will not be forgotten. The local election of Aurukun Shire coucillors, to be held in the community this Saturday, will continue, however the Electoral Commission of Queensland will re-call for nominations in the mayoral election, which will be held at a future date.

Trucking tragedy A SINGLE vehicle accident claimed the life of 56-year old truck driver, George Robinson, on Sunday afternoon. Initial investigations indicate the truck he was driving left the Mulligan Highway at Carr Creek (north of Mareeba) and crashed around 1pm Sunday. “Big George as he was known to his friends, was a well-known identity in Weipa, driving a regular route from Cairns to Weipa for Hawkins Freight Transport. Fellow truck driver, Frank Ward said he had known George from on the road for around 30 years. “Big George was the sort of bloke that would go out of his way to help you, Mr Ward said. Investigations are continuing into the cause of the crash.

I AM a local girl and I have stepped up and put my hat in the ring to be considered for the Weipa Town Authority top job. I moved to Weipa in the mid1980s, completing my senior years of schooling at the then Weipa North Secondary School before completing a traineeship with Comalco. After completing a four-year Bachelor of Education I taught children as a classroom teacher, and was subsequently promoted to head of curriculum. I am presently studying a double degree, majoring in human resources and community relations. I am truly excited to be campaigning for the chairperson position of the Weipa Town Authority. My father has for many years been a very productive team member of the WTA and contributed in delivering key improvements to the Weipa Community, and I want to continue to deliver on that tradition. I have listened to lots of local people who have bought up a range of very important issues with me. These issues will be a priority for your WTA team if I am elected The real deal with me will be my leadership style. One campaign promise I know I can deliver on for certain to the people of Weipa will be my leadership of the WTA team. My guiding principles will be made up of real
honesty, integrity and transparency. Sure, we need to align with the Weipa Community Plan and ensure we obtain maximum funding, abide by legislation and policies and identify frameworks and opportunities. But, most importantly, we must as a team deliver and possess three key attributes: 1. The ability to hear the voices of our constituents; 2. The ability to identify everyday issues affecting everyday people, businesses and service providers.; 3. The ability to deliver by the most cost-effective and efficient manner to resolve the issue and continue to move Weipa forward. This brings me to my ideals: that we need to increase our community capacity and resources to ensure we achieve our goals and the most efficient way to achieve this is by Weipa working together. My last request is that you take the time on April 28 to let the WTA hear your voice by placing your valued and important vote. Please remember, a vote for Gina Jenkins is a vote for Weipa working together. Gina Jenkins WTA chair candidate
Conventional council experience counts A BLOKE asked me a question the other day, “have any of the Weipa Town Authority nominees for the position of chairperson ever been on a conventional council?” Well, I have. I spent seven years on the Carpentaria Shire Council, three of these as deputy chairman. My division included Karumba, Kowanyama and Edward River. In that time we had many achievements, including a town hall, library, clinic, ambulance, fire brigade, recreation club, more and better streets, Gulf Local Authorities Development, Gulf Savannah Tourist Organisation, SES, and the airport access road. If elected as WTA chair, I shall

MY last hurrah! In the midst of chaos as I try to pack and remember all the chores that remain to be completed I have been keeping up with town commitments. What I would like to say is, what an honour and privilege it has been to serve the town, and be able to make improvements, as far as funds would allow. We can now be buried here, enjoy educational and health facilities that are equal to other towns, ride on new bike paths
in the old part of town, exercise on stations along the bike paths (in the near future), picnic at the lakes in comfort and the kids, big and small, can zoom around the skatepark. I have been able to lobby state and federal politicians regarding GST on rates and difficulties in accessing funding, also governance issues, so that we are well on the way to a change of governance. Do not forget to get out and vote on Saturday. Good Luck to all candidates. Weipa is finally
endeavour to have a normal town urban fire and rescue brigade set up here in Weipa to service Weipa, Napranum and Scherger. I realise that Rio Tinto and the air base have fire-fighting facilities, but they have a dedicated use. After the floods in southern Queensland and the battle the victims had with insurance companies, I wouldn’t like to see the problems we would have without a proper town fire service. The envisaged fire service could be a training and employment facility for Indigenous people of the Cape communities. I feel sure the service would be of little cost to the people of the Cape, as I have undertaken this project previously while a councillor and resident in Karumba. When you vote for WTA chair on Saturday, April 28, remember, I am the only nominee with prior conventional council experience. Bill Ennis WTA chair candidate
Young people are the future IT is with great pleasure I read that there is another young person in the Far North who is interested in their future direction. We as young people are the future, and it only makes sense that we should have a say in it. I congratulate Brooke Barton for putting her hand up to contest the Weipa Town Authority elected member position. Brooke is an excellent example of someone, through life experiences of growing up in regional Queensland, knows the difference between right and wrong, and if I was a local of Weipa I would be very proud to have Brooke as my representative. When I visited Weipa throughout my recent state election campaign, I only heard praise of Mrs Barton and I am sure that she will do her utmost to serve the good people of Weipa. Lachlan Bensted Former Candidate for Cook
Carrie Gay, Weipa Town Authority Chair coming of age. It has been a pleasure to work with the WTA staff and members. Going to “work” was something to look forward to. I would also like to praise the residents of Weipa who make up our excellent little town. Where else would you rather be at this time of year? While our friends down south are gearing up for the cold we can still enjoy the camping, fishing and the lifestyle Weipa has to offer. On a sad note, I would
like to acknowledge the passing of my friend, the mayor of Aurukun. He was a fine man who lobbied well for his people in Aurukun and for all residents of the Cape. To all my friends in Weipa, Napranum and Mapoon, it is very sad to say good bye after 30 years. To those of you I taught, always keep positive and do your best in whatever you are doing. God Bless you all Carrie Gay Chair, Weipa Town Authority

Weipa Medical Centre negotiations continue
Welcome, baby boy
Stephen and Madina Fanias welcomed the arrival of their son Tyler Embrey, on April 19, 2012, weighing 9lb 7oz. A brother for Jaylen 6, Luca 4, Brylee 3 and Paetyn 19 months.
FOLLOWING a recent visit to Weipa, Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch provided The Western Cape Bulletin with the following information regarding the status of the Weipa Medical Centre. “The current practice model is not working and is not financially viable, Mr Entsch said. “Despite rumours of funding being withdrawn from the practice, it in fact did not receive any funding, however Rio Tinto do make a considerable contribution to the running of the practice. Mr Entsch was informed that the practice could not
continue to run at a loss and directors of the practice have offered to transfer it to Queensland Health, at no cost, at the end of June 2012. “Queensland Health wants to find a solution to the problem and is looking at how to make the model work, Mr Entsch said. “Rio Tinto, who have been incredibly generous to date, are prepared to paly their part in the continuation of the practice and are awaiting the proposal. Mr Entsch said he was “quietly confident the situation would be resolved positively.
Frontline defence against disease and pests REPRESENTATIVES from the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) Biosecurity (Commonwealth) were in Weipa this week looking for unwanted creepy crawlies and plant diseases. The team, consisting of botanist Barbara Waterhouse, entomologist Tony Postle, and plant pathologists Richard Davis and Merriam Toala (visiting from Vanuatu) who work for the Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy, spent a week in the town checking out the plant health and looking for tell-tale signs of the introduction of new insect species. “We conduct inspections in reasonably high-risk, and high-risk areas in Far North Queensland on an annual basis looking for new pests, diseases and weeds, Ms Waterhouse said.“We do a lot of work in the Torres Strait and over the last couple of years there have been two or three new insects that have established themselves in the Torres Strait, and some of those may eventually make their way to the mainland. The team’s primary concern is with plants which are concerned with horticulture and agriculture. “Basically we are concerned with food plants and we look for early warning signs of disease and pest infestation which

could have an impact on agriculture and the environment, Ms Waterhouse said. Following visits to the Mapoon community and Napranum Farm, the team concentrated their efforts on the Weipa township. “We try to establish contact with people who have large and more diverse gardens, particularly those with paw paw or banana trees, and other food plants, Ms Waterhouse said. The information gathered by the scientists is used as a guide for state entomologists and plant pathologists to focus on areas which need to be surveyed more closely.
“We work closely with our state counterparts. In 2004 we found a weed at the Scherger RAAF base which had never before, or since, been recorded in Australia, and Biosecurity Queensland has been able to conduct an eradication program of the weed, which is a great outcome, Ms Waterhouse said. Plant pathologist, Richard Davis said the proximity of Cape York and the Torres Strait to the northern hemisphere made it easy for plant pests and unwanted insects to migrate to the area, which is why preventative measures were so important.

Box jellyfish secret uncovered AN unexpected discovery that box jellyfish begin the jellyfish phase of their life cycle at the same time each year has provided a valuable insight into the seasonal occurrence of the lethal marine stinger. James Cook University Marine Biology PhD student Matt Gordon and Associate Professor Jamie Seymour have been studying when box jellyfish change from their polyp phase into juvenile jellyfish, and to their surprise, have found that the process regularly occurs at the beginning of September. Dr Seymour described the finding as a significant step towards uncovering the overall life cycle of the box jellyfish, which would help develop a predictive model to determine the risk of when box jellyfish stings can occur. Mr Gordon said the research highlighted the need to consider box jellyfish management practices from both a stinger season perspective as well as a medusae season perspective, which is when polyps change into jellyfish. “There are two different processes going on here. The medusae season is concerned with when polyps are changing into jellyfish, while the stinger season deals with when box jellyfish are likely to represent a risk to humans. Only by understanding both processes can effective management protocols be developed,” he said. “This is the first data to show that the start of the medusae season occurs at a consistent time each year and that medusae are produced right throughout the season. “Over six seasons between 2000 and 2010, the medusae season not only started in early September, but varied by only one week across the decade.” The findings were published in the international journal PLoS ONE in March, in a paper entitled ‘Growth, Development and Temporal Variation in the Onset of Six Chironex fleckeri Medusae Seasons: A Contribution to Understanding Jellyfish
The eyes have it: the Weipa research has answered a few key questions about the life cycle of the box jellyfish.
Ecology’. Mr Gordon has been working on the research project since 2005 and incorporated data collected by JCU Associate Professor Dr Jamie Seymour since 2000. Jellyfish were collected from the estuaries and coastline of Weipa by driving a boat close to shore, jumping into the water to grab a jellyfish when one was spotted and then removing its four eye sets. “Each eye set contains a solid structure called a statolith, which has a series of rings within it. Just like you would with a tree, we were able to age each jellyfish based on the number of rings within its statoliths,” Mr Gordon said. “Given that we knew the date of capture for each jellyfish as well as its age, it was possible to calculate when each individual had changed from a polyp into a medusa. “These results suggest that the factor telling polyps to begin changing into jellyfish isn’t water temperature or rainfall or salinity, but rather length of day.”

The research has also shown that box jellyfish grow very quickly. “Juvenile jellyfish are only about 2mm in size when they metamorphose, but they have a phenomenal growth rate of up to 3mm per day,” Mr Gordon said. Dr Seymour said box jellyfish were still too small to be lethal to humans at the stage when\ they metamorphose. “It is not until jellyfish reach about the size of your closed fist that the number and type of stinging organelles they carry changes, as do the venom components, at which point, they become more lethal to vertebrates,” he said. “Based on the earliest date of metamorphosis and estimated growth rates, this change in stinging organelles and venom composition could occur after only a couple of months, which is when the stinger nets traditionally begin appearing along the coastline.” Mr Gordon said the research answered a few key questions about the life cycle of the box jellyfish, but there were still many unknowns. “We do not know what they are doing or where they are between September and the time they tend to arrive along the tropical coastline, which varies between seasons and geographic locations, but can be up to several weeks or months later,” he said. “This is largely because the location of the polyps is yet to be identified. “Making this discovery is proving problematic, especially since it is widely accepted that the 2mm polyps live on the underside of rocks within estuaries. “Such a discovery is like a needle in a haystack search, so our research has instead started with the adult stage and tried to deduce what has happened. “The next step in the research is working towards a predictive model where data such as water temperature or time of the year can be used to determine the risk of a box jellyfish sting occurring.”
Cape Alumina remains focused on Bauxite Hills project CAPE Alumina’s managing director, Graeme Sherlock, said this week that the company remains focused on developing its flagship Bauxite Hills mine and port project on western Cape York, Queensland. The Bauxite Hills project area is located approximately 95 kilometres north of Weipa, within the bauxite plateau between the Ducie and Skardon Rivers and just five kilometres southeast of the existing port at Skardon River. The company has defined an inferred resource of 60 Million tonnes (Mt) of in-situ, highquality, export-grade bauxite at the project area, which has the potential to yield up to five Mt per annum (Mtpa) of dryproduct bauxite over a 10-year period. “This project has the potential to produce lasting social and economic benefits for all Queenslanders and in particular the Aboriginal people of western Cape York,” Mr Sherlock said. “It is being developed in accordance with world’s-best practice with respect to environmental protection and rehabilitation and with the full cooperation of the Aboriginal people and traditional land owners on western Cape York.” Mr Sherlock said that should the Queensland government change the Wild Rivers legislation, as foreshadowed by Premier Newman and his team, the company would revisit its Pisolite Hills mine and port project. Cape Alumina’s proposed Pisolite Hills integrated mine and port project is located on

an elevated, open, dry bauxite plateau approximately 50 kilometres north-east of Weipa and 40 kilometres south-east of the community of Mapoon. It is located between 2.8 and 15 kilometres from the Wenlock River in western Cape York, Queensland. The 134.6 Mt of JORC-Codecompliant resource at Pisolite Hills could yield up to 7 Mtpa of dry-product bauxite over a 15-year period. Cape Alumina advised the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on October 11, 2010 that this project had been rendered unviable under forecast economic conditions by the Queensland government’s Wild Rivers declaration covering the Wenlock River Basin. “If the Queensland government changed the Wild Rivers legislation then we would obviously need to assess what those changes meant for all of our projects, including Pisolite Hills,” Mr Sherlock said. “At this stage there is no change in policy so any further discussion on this matter is merely hypothetical. However, Cape Alumina is pleased with what the LNP Government in Queensland have said on this matter publicly, in that they will provide a stable investment environment for companies like us, allow due process to follow its course, and asses any project based on its social, economic and environmental merits. “If that is the case then we are very confident that all of our projects will lead into production in the coming years,” Mr Sherlock said.

Weipa airport in for a cool change A NEW, air-conditioned departure lounge at Weipa airport is on track for completion in June, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations Jo-Anne Scarini said this week. The new departure area is required in order for the airport to meet new state government security requirements that come into effect from July 1, 2012 which require the screening of all passenger luggage. Ms Scarini said the as well as meeting the new airport security requirements, the $2.5 million upgrade would result in more comfortable departure area for up to 116 passengers. “We have worked with the Office of Transport Security to confirm upgrade options to fulfil the Government’s requirement of full security screening for Q400 planes by the July deadline,” Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations Jo-Anne Scarini said. “This will mean the new departure lounge will have an x-ray, walk-through metal

“By refurbishing the Air Services building, we will have optimum room for passengers to check-in, go through the security equipment and sit in the air-conditioned departure lounge” Ms Scarini said. “We will then use the existing facility as an arrival terminal only.” Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa will display the new departure ter-

Running mental health awareness into Weipa BRAD Carron-Arthur is running north, and he is making an unscheduled stop in Weipa along the way. Brad left his Canberra home on January 1, 2012 embarking on a solo ultra-marathon to the tip of Cape York in a quest to raise money and awareness of mental health. Originally planning to stop in at Weipa, Brad changed his mind when he realised how big the diversion would be from his planned route. Contacted by a Weipa men’s group this week Brad has agreed to make the diversion, and will be speaking about his journey, and hoping to raise awareness of mental health issues while in town overnight. Averaging 60km daily with no accompaniment and no support crew,
Brad carries only his eight kilogram backpack which holds the basic necessities for the trip. A psychology student with two years left to complete of his six-year degree, Brad’s sojourn has been one of personal growth, as well as a fund-raising exercise. In Cooktown last weekend Brad told the Cooktown Local News “It’s certainly been a big challenge and I’ve learnt a lot about myself along the way,” he said. “And hopefully, I’ll be doing some good for the cause of mental health.” Brad will be speaking at the Carpentaria Golf Club on Thursday, May 3 at 7pm and everyone is invited to attend. Donations can be made to Brad’s cause on the night or online at www.bradrunsnorth.com

Human resources and training manager Kamball Schafferius discussed the expectations of working for RTA Weipa with the IPS team.
DURING week four of the Indigenous PathWays Solutions ( I P S ) Wo r k S t a r t Program the team have been visited by the RTA human resources and training manager Kamball Schafferius. Kamball spoke to the team about the expecta-
tions RTA has for its employees. The IPS team shared with Kamball some of the employability skills they have been developing over the past few weeks. The team discussed their individual goals and invited Kamball to
the IPS Job Seeker expo. Martin (Kuzi) Bin Rashid, Sodexo’s Indigenous co-ordinator also visited the IPS team and discussed some of the employment options on offer within the 80-country 400,000-plus Sodexo workforce. The IPS team have
also been busy planning their expo this week. The IPS jobseeker expo highlights not only to RTA, but also many other local employers, the teams employability skills and their ability to organise, plan, coordinate and implement a large event.
Meet the IPS team Joshua Foote I AM an indigenous jobseeker from Pormpuraaw. After a very long time job hunting, including moving to Cairns, I am very grateful and excited to be a part if this program. This has given me the opportunity to gain employment and the possibility for a career with Rio Tinto Alcan. Through the IPS program, I have gained a better understanding of the mining industry, roles as an employee, OH&S understanding, developed good work ethics, environmental understanding and gained an enormous confidence boost. Over the last five years, I have been working with Main Roads as a roller operator, water truck driver and labourer and I enjoyed it a lot. My ultimate ambition is to work in the mines. I have always wanted to be a dump truck driver or a loader operator. Since I was a child I’d play with Tonka toys, telling myself I would grow up to drive a truck or a loader.

We now go to Mark Ch 12 and read from verses 1-12 and then let’s look at the writings to see what they are telling us. Let’s go to the last verse first (v 12) then go back to the start, because that verse tells us that the “tenants mentioned by the Lord Jesus in this parable were recognised by the Jewish leaders as the Lord speaking of them. “The Jewish leaders tried to arrest Jesus, because he had made this parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went
away. How had the Lord stirred them up this time? The parable was pointing out to the same leaders that confronted Jesus in the Temple that Israel was the vineyard, God was the owner and the Jewish religious leaders were the caretakers. They were supposed to lovingly care for those whom God put in their care, and when they went astray God would send his prophets to get them to get back on track again. But from Old Testament times until John
the Baptist, they rejected and even killed God’s messengers for what he had to say to them, so the Lord was sending his Son as a last resort. But now they were in the process of rejecting and killing him too! So God will deal with them and any blessings that God had given the Jews through their spiritual leaders were now going to be taken from them, and handed over to the Gentiles. It’s said like this in verse 9; “What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do? asked Jesus. “He will come and kill
those tenants and hand the vineyard over to others. God even uses people’s stubbornness to bring about the spread of the gospel. Let us remember those who gave their lives for our nation, and their loved ones who remain, and pray that war will be no more. Read Matthew Ch 15 v 13 which says “The greatest love a person can have for his friends is to give his life for them. (That goes for men and women). The Lord be with you. Rev Michael Connolly.
Good Life with Jeany Schall
Losing weight is in your head SINCE my youth I have struggled with weight problems. This encouraged me to stay active and I always incorporated a lot of exercise such as running, swimming, horseback riding along with healthy foods in my diet. When I moved to Australia and travelled around as a backpacker, I even put on more weight through eating two-minute noodles and white bread sandwiches and drinking alcohol, and the only exercise I got was dancing on the tables in the Woolshed. I am not proud of it, but something many of us go through while believing they have unlimited time until they feel the effects of such a lifestyle. One day, while travelling through Western Australia I looked back at some recent photos of myself and realised that something had to change. I cleaned up my diet, got a job and reduced my drinking. Working as an underwater photographer, video editor and deliverer I had pretty much no time or energy to exercise outside my work hours, and had little time to eat during work hours. Finally, I started to lose weight, one kilo each week. All of a sudden my mind set changed, and I thought, “Wow this is great, I am looking better every week”, “I am loosing weight every week”, “I
look fantastic”. This mindset, and the ability to stop focusing on the next diet, or how to burn the calories that I am eating, actually helped me lose weight in the long run. For five years I have kept the weight off, and only the last couple of years when starting to focus on diets and weight loss (which is part of my job) I again experienced weight gain again. From experience I know it not easy to always love your body. I believe the only way to be healthy, and happy, is to keep exercising, nurturing your body with the best quality of foods available to improve your health, and to start to love yourself the way you are right now. Don’t judge yourself for the food that you are eating. Enjoy it, and get on with your life. Continue being healthy and continue being proud of the person you are. Weight loss is not about blaming yourself, but taking responsibility for what you can do, so you create a positive change in your life. You cannot change the fact that you may have eaten a chocolate bar, but you can choose to make your next meal healthier and go for a walk after work. Steps to take to make you “think thin” 1. Focus on health rather than weight loss. Choose to think each day you will be eating in a way that sustains
your body to be lean and healthy. 2. Exercise to relive stress. If it is a cool swim in the pool, or a relaxing walk on the beach with a friend and the dog. 3. Find a photo of you when you were looking great. Keep it somewhere where you can see it every day. This is you, and there is no reason you cannot make yourself, and your body, remember how good you felt. 4. Eating healthy to lose weight. Sticking to the most natural, most basic foods will help you to eliminate hidden sugars and fats, artificial colouring and flavours. This will increase your energy and mood to stay on the right track. 5. Diligently keep thinking a new positive way. It may take a while to convince yourself and every cell in your body that you are now ready to become healthier than ever. Be patient. All these tips work, the other way around, if you would like to increase weight as well. You and your body want to be healthy lean and full of energy. Both of you like to be looking great and feel great for life! There are no excuses not to eat the healthiest option available to you, live healthy and think positively about yourself. You can think yourself healthy.

SCOOP The Newshound Sniffing out the stories about our four-legged friends... PAWS UP to camping. I can’t believe my mum and dad have kept this wonderful past-time from me for so long! A couple of weekend’s back my humans took myself and my K9 mum Crispy on a “camping trip” and I tell you it was the best time I have ever had. I wasn’t terribly impressed with the car ride (I tend to get a bit carsick) but once we arrived I just knew we were in for a great weekend. My humans produced all kinds of interesting things from the back of the car, including this strange thing they called a tent, which I got to sleep in with them. There was no getting booted out of the kitchen when they cooked food as the kitchen was right there, bang-smack in the middle of our camp area - what a bonus! I couldn’t believe the freedom this camping experience offered. I quickly learned how far Crispy and I could venture before the humans called us back, and as long as we stayed close to the camp we were free to explore. So many different smells - it was amazing! By the way, if any of my K9 buddies are heading out bush, I think I left one of my doggie-bone biscuits buried outside the tent if you’re in need of a snack. I can’t wait for our next camping adventure! PAW S U P t o o b e d i e n c e classes. I attended my first obedience class last Saturday with the lovely Tonia May. There were six other K9 friends for me to meet and they all seemed like really nice dogs. We got to learn how to sit and stay, and even though I’m already pretty good at it, I tried extra-hard and was rewarded with plenty of treats from my mum. Walking on the lead and not pulling was a bit of a challenge, but I think I’m getting the hang of it. I’m looking forward to the next class and seeing my new friends again.

Busy court week
Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith
VERY, very busy last two weekends, drink drivers, domestic violence incidents, vehicles being impounded, assaults, drunken fights, public drinking and lots of locals offenders being sent to court. Talking about court, we just finished court week, and two plane trips to Cairns were required, and still we had to put one on a commercial flight cause we were overbooked. When I look back over the court files and the reasons for this large number of incarcerations, the contributing circumstance is just about always (well, 99.9 per cent of the time) alcohol-related. Some people really need to have a good, long, hard look at themselves and either work out how to drastically reduce their alcohol intake or give it up altogether.

YES, for those at the airport, you did in fact see the Customs dog running over baggage, checking for any drug paraphernalia. Mail at the Post Office was also checked and quite a bit was found. This means that Police will be working closely with Customs in the future, who will again be visiting our town to conduct more checks at the airport and through the mail.

Lastly, the skatepark has been the target of obscene graffiti recently. It is not right for parents and their children to see this type of filthy graffiti plastered all over the concrete. We encourage all locals to report any unlawful activity around the park, because like you, we won’t tolerate it either.
On a lighter note... THE term exaggerate (meaning - overstate, carry beyond the truth) is not knew to us here at the station. I mean, we have some of the finest exaggerators the world has ever seen. On occasions Duffy will kick through the door telling us about the large number of big pigs he got on the weekend - there are two counts of exaggeration right there; one being the number, and two being the size. Then we have young ‘Ads’ and ‘The Slayer’ who dance through the door bragging about the large number of very big (yes, the word horse is mentioned) barra they caught on the weekend and that’s a three-counter right there folks: one - large number, two - big barra, and three -they caught? I won’t even start on Jock’s ‘the big hitter’ golf swing, and how far he sends a ball sailing down the fairway on a good day! At least now we can wait anxiously to hear all about Forbsey’s newly increased bench-press weight, and how much bigger his biceps have increased overnight. ...At least there is a bit of variety in amongst it - God help us.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION APRIL 28, 2012
Trevor Snodgrass Candidate for member, Weipa Town Authority
I HAVE lived in Weipa for the past 23 years with my family. Prior to this I lived in Townsville, working in the building industry as a registered commercial builder for 20 years, and prior to that served two years national service with the Royal Australian Engineers. I owned and successfully ran Weipa Earthmoving for 17 years. During this time I have been involved in many local organisations: Deputy controller Weipa SES 10 years, currently local controller for three years; Member Weipa Town Authority 10 years, six years as deputy chair; Currently a member of
Northern Division of Qld Health Partnership Council, a position held for four years. I have also been chair of Weipa Catchment Coordinating Committee, Local Ambulance Committee and the Weipa Chamber of Commerce. Specific issues I would address if elected would include: • Prioritise the channel and kerb works and re-seal required to the remaining cul-de-sacs in Rocky Point; • Ensure the upgrade to Andoom Oval proceeds in a managed way – involvement of all stakeholders is essential to achieve a successful outcome; • A committee needs to be formed to operate the func-
tions of the new cyclone shelter; • E n s u r e We i p a m o v e s progressively forward in a controlled manner in collaboration with all stakeholders. I am by no means in favour of normalisation at any price – we don’t need to be the poor cousins of the Cook Shire. Those of you who know me know that I call a spade a spade. I am not a lover of red tape. I will, as I have in the past, battle for the small guy and for the business people who put so much into our wonderful town. I believe you, the people, make this town what it is. You have my total support and commitment.

Queensland local government elections – April 28, 2012
LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION APRIL 28, 2012
Tammy Freeman Candidate for member, Weipa Town Authority
COMING to Weipa in 2008, we settled, loving life here on the Cape. Originally from Tassie back in 2000, I am a committed Queenslander now. Growing up on VFL/ AFL, speedway and car racing, as a child I remember dad setting up our old purple falcon, sheet of ply on the roof, lawn chairs attached so we would get the best view Symmons Plains race track. Matt and I met in Tassie, now married for 20 years last year with all our hopes and dreams still attached. Matt has worked with RTA for over 15 years and our children, Holly and Josh both live and work in Weipa. Professionally, my background is in partnerships, CD, governance and social justice. This experience would help take Weipa to a new level. As CEO of Weipa Community Care Association Inc. (WCCA Inc.) since 2008, I oversee a vast array of federal, state and philanthropic funding contracts in the area of community development and social justice for the community of Weipa. Much of this work involves consultation, liaison and partnership with local indigenous groups, government departments, and ministers offices, other NGOs, commercial partners and stakeholders on sensitive matters regarding community programs for our region. Representing WCCA at a government, business and community level, providing the organisation with strategic
leadership is my day to day responsibility. My experience ensuring the efficient financial transparency and business planning of the services including developing and implementing policy, procedure, and governance under a variety of Acts, regulations and standards would be of great benefit to the WTA. During my tenure with WCCA the funding base has grown by 140 per cent, and our employment outcomes increased from four to nine staff. The funding for the operations and ownership of the property that is the Western Cape Women’s Crisis Shelter has been secured, and the ongoing viability of services through a strong capital and governance base has increased. We came to Weipa from Central Queensland where I worked in the education/ tertiary and community sectors. This involved managing school, family and student relationships with regard to disengaged senior students, liaison with industry, and managing equity and diversity. I also directed programs for school-based apprenticeships and traineeships. As the inaugural CEO of CQV, I led a partnership team that developed and implemented the CQV business model. Directing CQV through the initial proposal development, funding, governance and business development modelling, then into operational capacity was my responsibility. Prior to that back in Tassie I worked in a variety of roles in the tertiary, employment and community sectors. I now hold board directorships and/or management committee positions with RDA-FNQTS, IACD, ANZTSR Inc. and IA Inc. I represent WCCA Inc. and the RDA as a member of WCCoC. In the past I have been a member of the Fitzroy Central West Regional Ministerial Forum board and the Strengthening NGO’s forum panel. So now you know my credentials, let’s look at the opportunities for Weipa’s future that are relative to our Weipa Community Plan. Some of these opportunities may require WTA playing a supporting role to facilitate other key stakeholder’s development through local planning and policy development, lobbying, resources etc. Regardless of who takes the lead, the WTA and its elected members need to stimulate those opportunities. 1. A diversified economy for our children’s future
Page 12 Western Cape Bulletin April 25, 2012
• PDR and transportation routes • Localism and sustainability initiatives • Local production, consumption of goods and encourage households to be more selfsufficient • Resolution of land tenure and other legislation to provide certainty for investment in development opportunities • Town Planning scheme that supports a diversified industry base and built infrastructure. 2. Our lifestyle and liveability • Local roads, street, culde-sacs (seal, kerb, gutter, drainage issues) • Residential housing and land • Develop a long-term sustainable accommodation policy • Community strategies for personal safety (street and pathway lighting) • Cost-effective options for improving food supply (local food production) • Regionalise services (main hub for service delivery) 3. Improved infrastructure, health, education and social eesources • Local health and well-being needs (birthing, GP issue, senior facilities) • Reduce the transient population and attract people to stay • Reduce the hardship for individuals and families through the need to travel to access health services • Education and training opportunities, needs of the whole community • Engage community in the support of volunteer participation. The core certainty for Weipa is that as a community our success will be indicative of our community’s belief in its capacity to define our community’s aspirational well-being. Weipa needs to focus on meaning; meaning in relation to social cohesion, meaning in relation to social connectedness and meaning in relation to social inclusion. These essential key ingredients will drive our community’s connectedness, and with that will come built and social infrastructure that will provide us with a real future for Weipa. When you vote on Saturday, April 28 look for the candidate/s that has the capacity to perform the role with integrity, responsibility and commitment. A councillor (member) must serve the overall public interest of the whole community, not just a particular interest area or group. If you consider me for one of the three WTA member roles up for election I will provide the community of Weipa with those qualities.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION APRIL 28, 2012
Peter Miller Candidate for member, Weipa Town Authority
IN 1985 I brought my family (Heather and three daughters) to Weipa, where I had a role with Comalco until I was retrenched in 1999. We stayed in Weipa (it was now home for us all) and I started up a new business, Cape York Publishing, and purchased the local newspaper The Weipa Bulletin from Comalco. We ran this as a community newspaper and supported as many local organisations and groups as we could through free advertising and promotions, and in return received so much community support. Now it’s time to give back. At the end of 2006 we sold the newspaper, closed the business, and I retired. I stood for election to the WTA at a bye-election in March 2007, when a member resigned and left Weipa. I was returned unopposed in 2008, and served that term as deputy chair. In my time in Weipa I have: Been employed by Comalco (CRA) (RioTinto) and (RioTinto Alcan); Have started and operated two businesses, I don’t talk about Weipa Palms since I killed (forgot to water) my stock of palm trees (not a green thumb); Owned real estate; Have been a self-funded retiree; And am now a pensioner. Some of the community organisations I am, or have been, involved with over the years include: Weipa Fishing Chal-
lenge, Weipa Lions, Weipa P&C, CAPS, Weipa Croc Run, Weipa Chamber of Commerce and the Weipa Car Club. I have represented the WTA on the following organisations: Western Cape Chamber of Commerce; Regional Organisation of Councils Cape York; Weipa Integrated Health Service Community Advisory Network; We s t e r n C a p e R e g i o n a l Partnership Agreement Weipa Liquor Accord. Independent from the WTA I am a board member of: Cape York Sustainable Future (CYSF) and Far North Queensland and Torres Straight Regional Development Australia Board. If elected as WTA member I iwould address the following issues: • I am totally opposed to ratepayers funds being used on Rio assets; • The old favourite, GST on the general rate - IT HAS TO GO; • Negotiate with Rio to bring forward the capital to complete kerb and channelling before plan; • The Cape Police Inspector to be stationed in Weipa along with 24-hour policing; • Support Cape York Sustainable Futures for a sealed PDR by 2020. The perception is Weipa has massive incomes, I know that is true for some, but not all residents. I know along with massive incomes comes high living expenses. I have experienced most aspects of living in Weipa and can represent each fairly; I will speak not just for ratepayers but all residents young or old, rich or poor. I am not only prepared to address hard issues, but have done so in my past terms on the Weipa Town Authority. I am fully dedicated to being an advocate for Weipa, and indeed stood for and was successful on being elected onto the board of Cape York Sustainable Futures. I am Weipa’s only registered lobbyist. I believe Weipa and the Cape need diverse sustainable economic development. When the current WTA took office we had a road map but no route marked where we were going to go. Now with the Communities Plan in place I would like to be part of the team that takes Weipa on the trip marked out in the plan. I know politicians promises are worthless, but I can promise you this – not all of you will like some of my decisions, but I will make them in what I believe is Weipa’s best long-term interest. You know it makes sense.

I AM pleased to have the opportunity to stand as candidate for member of the Weipa Town Authority. I am married with three kids and have been calling Weipa home, by choice, for almost five years now. I have been privileged to gain extensive international experience in the legal field
LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION APRIL 28, 2012
Brooke Barton Candidate for member, Weipa Town Authority
BORN and bred in Cape York on Watson River Station I was taught primary school by my Mum and for my senior years, I travelled away to boarding school. After completing high school in 2001, I worked
and have served as the legal representative for a transitional local council, many times the size of the Weipa Town Authority, for almost eight years. What does that mean for you? A person can only offer you what he has to give. If you make me your first choice, you will allow me to bring maturity, experience and dedication to serve you. You work for Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa - wouldn’t you just rubberstamp their policies, you ask? I am a firm believer in corporate social responsibility i.e. the continued commitment of a business to behave ethically and to contribute to improving the quality of life of their workforce, the local community and society at large. As a matter of fact, this forms the core of everything I do at RTAW. I’m not afraid to argue difficult positions, and I’m not afraid to take strong steps to make sure that your position is heard even if that means that I must disagree with RTAW management on occasion. I have good working relationships with neighbouring councils and government department personnel. When I speak on your behalf, I will be listened to.
Why should people vote for me? RTAW has elected to sell the majority of their properties in Weipa to private individuals. Each home owner in return now has the right to expect that the town infrastructure is maintained to the extent that it ensures an acceptable standard of service delivery in relation to their, often single biggest investment. For this reason alone, every home owner should vote in the local government election and ensure that they elect the most suitable candidates to make decisions on their behalf. I do not take it lightly when people put their trust in me. If elected, I will make sure that the interests of private home owners remain paramount in all decision making processes and are factored into all decisions in relation to the South of Embley development and normalisation of Weipa. My vision remains for Weipa to become a vibrant, self-sustaining town that would not only survive post-mining but would indeed prosper. If you share this vision, join hands with me on April 28, 2012. Let’s make it happen, in the interest of all Weiparites. Good luck to all candidates.
around Queensland living in Weipa, Cloncurry, Toowoomba and most places in between. I had a number of jobs from stationhand to front of house receptionist and I was, and will always be, willing to try new things to expand my knowledge base. After my time away I decided to move back to Cape York, where I met my husband John (Bart). We married in 2007 and our daughter, KaylaRuth, was born in 2008. At present, Bart and I manage the Weipa Caravan Park & Camping Ground. I have lived in, and visited, some amazing places, but Weipa is the place I’ve always called home. Issues I would address if elected: Obviously the standard of certain infrastructure around town needs to be addressed as well as the kerbing and channelling of a number of courts/streets. Besides the infrastructure improvement, I would love to see more community facilities including upgrades and improvements to the current facilities. This would include upgrades to bike paths, improv-
ing our community parks, upgrades to our boat ramps and ensuring the finalisation and implementation of the new Weipa showground master plan. I also believe that Weipa needs to look seriously at economic diversification. I don’t say this just because of my family’s business venture outside of Weipa’s mining industry, but because we’ve all seen the rise and fall of the mines, and in today’s uncertain times, Weipa and the residents of Weipa need to be able to sustain themselves, and their investments, if the mining sector was to again suffer. I believe I can assist the WTA in this economic diversification by guiding new projects to improve protocol, providing workshops for interested new project builders and liasing with all levels of government to ensure the ongoing sustainability of these projects. I encourage the people of Weipa to vote for me on Saturday, April 28 as I have vested interests in the town, and because I am passionate about Weipa’s future, and therefore my family’s future, in Weipa.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION APRIL 28, 2012
Stretch Noonan Candidate for member, Weipa Town Authority
I FIRST came to Weipa 33 years ago and worked for Comalco and local contractors for three years. The lure of seeing the rest of Australia was too much, and I left Weipa to travel and work in a wide variety of places, mainly in the construction industry, returning to visit Weipa on several occasions. In 2010 my partner and I made the move to Weipa to manage The Western Cape Bulletin and I’m pleased to say, I am finally here to stay. During my years of travelling I managed large construction companies, including the New South Wales branch of a substantially large construction company where I negotiated contracts with private, State and Federal Government clients. I also attained a diploma in project management. My travels concluded in 2000 when I settled in Port Douglas, constructing luxury homes. I became heavily involved in all aspects
1 K
of the Port Douglas community, including 10 years with the Port Douglas AFL Football Club. I was a committee member of the Port Douglas Junior AFL Football Club for eight years, three of those as president, before becoming a committee member at the senior club. My involvement with the club committees was invaluable as I learned to negotiate at many different levels from local club, area, zone and state to national. I also gained experience in preparing grants and lobbying local, state and federal governments. During my visits to Weipa over the years, and finally with my settlement here, I have seen the evolution of the town, and I am looking forward to playing a part in Weipa’s future. People have raised many issues with me since my nomination for WTA elected member, such as kerb and channelling, lack of water pressure and recycling facilities and deteriorating infrastructure which need addressing immediately, along with larger issues which must be dealt with over time. The future of Weipa depends on economic diversity and this can only be achieved if all stakeholders work together for a common interest. It is extremely important that each and every one of you on the Weipa electoral roll casts your vote this Saturday, April 28. State and federal governments will be keeping a close eye on our local elections, and together we need to show that we are committed to our community, and care about our future by exercising our democratic right to vote. I believe I can serve the Weipa community well if elected on Saturday. I am always approachable and will be a level-headed, objective voice for the people of Weipa. Remember, I’m not running for office, I’m running for you.

ARIES (March arch h 21 21st 1st - A April 20th) A difficult aspect to Saturn could make you quite negative at times. You may feel that there is no light at the end of the tunnel! A chance event later in the week will turn things around faster than you expect. Romance. Your partner may not be telling you everything that you need to know. Don’t assume the worst – but do try to find out everything!
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) Don’t boss people around, even if you feel that they are being obstructive. A difficult aspect to Mars could make you quite tense at times, and there is a risk that you could fly off the handle if you get frustrated. Romance. This promises to be an exciting week. A person whom you meet through a social activity will be very much on your mind.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)
FOR KIDS
A frightening dream may leave you wondering what is going to come next. The imagery in the dream will not be totally negative, however: the ultimate message is that you will get what you are looking for, so long as you are prepared to keep trying. Romance. Your partner may have different priorities from you at the moment. A compromise will be easy, so long as you are both flexible.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A move to a different job may not solve all your problems. Before you consider such a drastic step, you should think hard about the advantages of your present work. Romance. Your emotional energy is going to waste at the moment. Find a more constructive way to channel your energy otherwise you will feel drained when you need it the most.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Your work will be getting you down at the moment. You may even be thinking about looking for a new job. This is not the best time for a major change, however, and you must be cautious about making a move which you might regret later. Romance. Communications with your partner are likely to be very healthy at the moment. A trip away from home later in the week will go especially well.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
This week it is important to have the utmost patience. Don’t waste time looking for something which you have lost: it will turn up when the time is right. Romance. You will soon know the answer to an important question which has been on your mind over the past few days. Don’t push for an answer though.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Chores will appear out of nowhere this week! Unfortunately there is a lot more to be done than meets the eye. Romance. A friend who wants to get to know your partner could stir up jealousies, possibly without realising it. There will be no need to worry.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)
For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au
MUDDY RIVER
Don’t waste time on a project which is unlikely to actually lead anywhere. You have a lot of more important things to deal with and don’t need to chase red herrings. Romance. A show of affection will change the way you feel about a friend who has been close to you in the past.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A friend who has given you some confidential information won’t want you to spread it around. You may not realise quite how important this secret is to them. Romance. Don’t give in to an emotional outburst that you will feel several times this week. Your partner may be a little on-edge at the moment.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) A dream later in the week will surprise you – until you work out what it is about. The message in the dream won’t be obvious at first, and you will need to think hard about the associations which it conjures up. Romance. Your partner will be very interested in one of your new friends. It may be difficult to pull them apart!
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
QUOTE OF THE DAY To repeat what others have said requires education. To challenge it requires brains. – Mary Pettibone Poole
SOLUTIONS No. 95
Advice from friends who are negative won’t help you. You don’t want your positive energy to be suffocated by people who have much less initiative themselves. Romance. A romantic offer should be taken up. The person concerned will be serious - but you won’t get a second chance.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Don’t retreat from a problem which has been worrying you recently. You need to drill down until you get the solution. A friend who has been through a similar experience will be able to give you some useful advice. Romance. A social gaffe made by one of your friends could prove embarrassing. You will soon be able to have a good laugh, however.

AFTER watching the NSW trial game between City and Country I think the Blues are in all sorts of trouble. I just think Queensland will overpower the Blues and record a seventh straight series win with a 3-0 whitewash. Paul Gallen is a tremendous player but I don’t think the selectors will pick the best team around him, which is in Queensland’s favour. The test match between the Aussies and the Kiwis was a cracker of a game and was played in a fantastic spirit. How good was Jonathan Thurston stepping into the big shoes left behind by Darren Lockyer? That is why many great judges regard him as the best player in the world. I was in Townsville for the Cowboys versus Storm two weeks ago and at the after-match function the Cowboys presented Jonathan Thurston with the 2011 Golden Boot award for the best player in the world. During his speech the likeable

number seven spoke about how much North Queensland meant to him and all I can say he is a very humble guy who loves his footy so much, and is very passionate about young Indigenous league players. On Wednesday, round eight begins with the Dragons and Roosters battling it out in their annual Anzac Day clash which is very emotional and always a great game. Down in Melbourne the Storm and Warriors will go into battle. Friday night will see the Bulldogs and Sea Eagles go to war, and there should be some interesting moments as the Des Hasler fiasco will be in everyone’s minds. The Broncos and Titans will play a blockbuster at Suncorp Staduim, and even though the Titans haven’t had the best start to the season I’m sure they’ll lift to play the mighty Broncos. My Cowboys should ride off into the sunset with a solid win over the Rabbits. The Sharks will put some more bite

I’m sure it will show up in a cardboard box or two in a few weeks time. I got a complimentary plastic spoon out of it and all! With all the focus on Tupperware I have to admit I missed most of the footy over the weekend. A few terrible injuries seemed to have punctuated the games and I have managed to avoid watching any of those on replay, which I’m quite comfortable about. I didn’t see the Gary Rohan incident but have just heard that Lindsay Thomas will get weeks and it seems a bit rough. According to The Bald Eagle the Hawks and Eagles game was one to miss despite the close finish, and Grant Thomas is having his influence on the game style of Freo which is a bit disappointing as they can be exciting if they are allowed to be. The ex-league boys showed some form with K throwing his weight around nicely, and even showing signs of reading the play, and Izzy popped up with a goal from outside 50. I hope they
keep improving now that they know how good a game can be. The tips are tight with a handful of punters in the lead and some tough tipping ahead. Great to see, and keep it up. This week I’m going for the Crows, Lions, Eagles, Bombers in the Anzac Day belter, Blues, Dogs, Roos, Saints and Hawks. The Anzac Day game throws another dimension into the round and I reckon the Bombers are looking the goods. It would be good to see them get up after a couple of years (Zaharakis!) since a win. This Sunday morning get down to the oval at 9am for a kick with the kids at Auskick. Bring your sun hat and a drink and we’ll hopefully keep the kids entertained for an hour or so. Spread the word and we’ll get a crowd. Cheers for now, happy tipping. Scotty.

Nicholas competes in the butterfly event.
Katelyn McCahon off to a start in backstroke.
WEIPA Lightening Swimming Club members were back in the pool this week following the Easter break, with 36 swimmers attending the first club night held last Friday. Numbers were down a little due to many being ill, but the kids still managed 52 Personal Bests (PBs), with some swimmers evidently having too many Easter eggs over the holidays! Swimmers of the week this week were Hannah Gamble, Nicholas Keough and Tom McCahon. Hannah swam three PBs including over three seconds in her backstroke, and 16 seconds in the 100m Breastroke. Nicholas also swam three PBs, including knocking off seven seconds from his backstroke and three seconds from his breaststroke. Tom swam three PBs including taking over nine seconds off his medley and three seconds off his breastroke. Three P’s also came from Rachel Brooker, Braydon Keough, Tiffany McDougall, Courtney Proud and Dane Tyson. Two PBs for the night from Amy Bakker, Jemma Hyytinen, Sabrina Koina, Katelyn McCahon, Elizabeth McInnes, Sophie Mohr, Landen Proud and Savannah Proud. One PB was swum by Harry Bakker, Kyle Hunter, Rebecca Hunter, Tessa Hyytinen, Harrison Kruckow, Alex McInnes, Lisl Mohr, Ashlee Moon, Katie Pilkington, Elle Toomey, Alex-Adel Tyson and Donald Tyson. Other notable PBs included Amy Bakker (3.4s), Kyle Hunter (4.2s), Tessa Hyytinen (7.2s), Harrison Kruckow (15.7s), Tiffany McDougall (6.3s), Lizzy McInnes (3.5s), Ashlee Moon (4.4s), Courtney Proud (4.5s), Landen Proud (3.5s), Elle Toomey (6.6s) and Alex-Adel Tyson (4.6s). See you all next club night, Friday, April 27. Last club night will be Friday, May 18. For any enquiries, please call Wade on 4069 7376 or 4069 8935.
Enthusiasm and dragonflies at weekend soccer matches
Connor, Tianna, Sean, Riley and McFarlane are all keen to get the ball after a four week break.
Jason and Harry try to put the pressure on Taj.
AN awesome round of soccer games with players returning after a four-week break and dragonflies covering the fields. Thank you to the refs and parent helpers who make the games possible with their support and enthusiasm. Squirt parents – your help with the teams as game leaders is very much appreciated. Coaching for Teens, Titans and Senior Titans is on Mondays at 5pm. Coaching for Squirts and Tykes is Wednesdays 3.15 pm starting May 2. All players need to arrive 20 minutes early before the start of their game and gather outside the P&C shed. Players should be wearing black shorts, sandshoes/soccer shoes, shin pads and club socks over the shin pads. Club socks and shin pads are available for sale on the day. We expect the
of the field, good ball control, spirited attack on the opponents, follow through and sprints and many nearmisses at goal. Yellow were outnumbered and did well to defend and had great second half attack. Blue team constantly upset opposing players attack, showed good team work, great passing skills, good ball control and with their focused attack prevailed in the end. Blue 6, Yellow 2. Teens Red V Green Another good game with strong defence and passing skills. Good attack and defence, teamwork and passing starting to shine. Red prevailed in the end. Red 7, Green 3. Titans Gold V Green Another great game enjoyed by all players. Lots of camaraderie and teamwork on the field from both teams. Senior Titans Welcome back to Ref Darryl – great to see you back. Where are all the Blue Team players? The team could have done with a couple more team members. Edan scored the first runaway goal for Red.

Squirts Gold & Green V White & Navy The little Squirts came back from their holidays with renewed confidence and enthusiasm and played a good flowing game. A fun and enjoyable game to watch with great parent cheering support. Gold & Green 8, White &Navy 3. Squirts Gold & Navy V White & Black An enjoyable game with all kids smiling. All players got lots of kicks and showed some good defence moves and clearly 100 per cent effort and 100 per cent fun by all. Jay and Tai scored goals for Gold and Shonika scored for White. Gold & Navy 5, White & Black 1. Tykes Gold v Blue Players have enjoyed their break and were back at soccer keen to play. Gold recorded a strong win
against an undermanned Blue team. Jaylen carved up the pack for Gold with five goals, despite some strong defensive work for Blue, lead by Riley who stopped many goals on the last line of defence. Good support and lot of strong moves through the pack from Connor, Sam, McFarlane and Tianna. Soccer was the winner in the end. Gold 5, Blue 0. Bailey evened it with a goal. Edan scored again. Jeffrey scored next for Blue after a big kick downfield by Josh. Edan scored for Red again. Scott scored for Red. (Interesting hairdo!) John Den looped a nice shot into goal for Red. Edan put a nice shot in for Red. Savannah showed some good footwork to score the next Red goal. Scott beat the girls to net a goal. Second half started with some good fieldwork and passing shots. Savannah beat 2 Blue players to find the net. Bailey scored off a penalty shot for Blue. Axel came for second half and scored next for Blue. Liam S scored for Red. Blue got a penalty shot and chose Maddie to take it and she succeeded. Liam S hit a great header in for a goal – great shot!! Edan slammed on in at short range for a solid goal. Nathan got a fast running goal for Red. Savannah took on the goalie and scored for Red. Good game – hard slog for Blue, though. Red 14, Blue 8.

Plenty of fun at Napranum run
Sportsfishers weigh-in Barra
Weipa Sportsfishing Club member Simone was happy with this nice Barramundi catch.
LAST weekend’s Weipa Sportsfishing Club’s fishing outing returned with everyone weighing in some tasty local Barra. Roberts Creek paid off once again for Rod with some nice Barra weighed in, winning him the men’s category with 776 points. Fiona’s efforts also paid off, receiving double points for her Grunter, which was the target species of the competition.
Phil also weighed in a big Threadfin caught on four kilos amongst other fish, keeping him in the lead. Well done to Darryl for winning the ‘lucky lure’ for the month. Next month’s competition is on May 19 and 20. The target species is Fingermark, and they must be a minimum of 45cm. Weigh-in is at Phil and Jenny’s.
LAST Friday afternoon more than 50 children participated in another successful Napranum Deadly Fun Run, organised by Indigenous Marathon Project runner, Bianca Graham. The Napranum Deadly Fun Run is part of the national Deadly Fun Run series where a male and female champion will represent their community at the Deadly Fun Run series championships to be held in Uluru in mid-2012. Organiser Bianca Graham wished to thank the Napranum PCYC and local volunteers who did a fantastic job supporting the children and putting on a barbecue following the fun run.

Golfers post excellent scores in weekend’s competitions
...And they’re off. More than 50 children were off and racing in the Napranum Deadly Fun Run last Friday afternoon.
CARPENTARIA Golf Club’s Saturday event was a single stroke, sponsored by Mecure Cairns Harbourside. There were two great scores with both Kerry Scales and Benny Lawton came in with a 65 nett. The NTPs for Saturday were won by Kerry Scales, Michael Newman, Benny Lawton and Peter Ross. Sunday’s event was a two-person ambrose sponsored by the Western Cape Bulletin, and once again there were some great scores posted. The winners, with a fine 61¼ came from Peter Clark and Michael Newman, and the runners-up were Steve and Gavin Wust. The NTPs went to Teleke Kofe, Gavin Wust and Wendy Grainger.
Second in age group: Zion put in a big effort near the finish line in the Napranum Deadly fun run.
Our thanks goes to the Mecure Cairns Harbourside and The Western Cape Bulletin for their generous sponsorship. Next Saturday, April 28 a 4BBB Vs par match play qualifying round, sponsored by Enzed, will be played. If you are unable to play on Saturday due to work commitments please play this week and hand the card and fees in at the bar. Sunday’s event is a single stroke monthly medal sponsored by Blackwoods. Don’t forget nominations are now available at the club for May weekend; nominations close Thursday, May 3. – Wendy Grainger Club Captain

FIRST off, I would like to inform you all that I am leaving Weipa in a couple of weeks for my home town, Townsville, to spend some valuable time with my mum and dad as they turn 85 this year. My daughter also lives in Townsville and it will be good to see her more often. If any of you have left rods or reels with me for repair please come and get them, and there are a few to be picked up. I am saddened to be leaving, and will miss a lot of new friendships I have made here, as well as the ďŹ shing. That’s enough of the soppy stuff lets talk ďŹ shing... Barra seem to be the talk of late with good ďŹ sh being taken in all the creeks and rivers in the area. One thing though (here comes my little whinge) how about we all think about tomorrow, and not go out like Vikings and rape and pillage the stocks? One angler was telling me he bagged out three days in a row. This is not sustainable in any ďŹ shery, and killing all the breeding stock (ďŹ sh over 80cm) will only see the demise of ďŹ shing as we know it. I am sure that all anglers would like to take their great grandchildren Barra fishing, rather than showing them pictures in a book and telling about “how it used to beâ€?. I had an angler tell me this week he kept losing fish as the hook kept pulling. After inquiring as to his rig I found he was using narrow hooks. To do a simple test to see if your hook choice is okay, just put your rig

Barramundi Nature Lodge will also be up for grabs again. Louise Cruse was the lucky winner last year. Louise and her husband Steve (pictured above) had an amazing time, landing approximately 80 Barra ranging from 65-80cm on their first day. Their fishing adventure just got better as the days went on with the Barra landed getting bigger and bigger. Over 150 Barra were caught between them on the second day with Louise landing a couple of really nice fish, one measuring 106cm followed by a 109cm beauty. At one stage throughout the trip Louise had a strike rate of seven Barra from seven casts! On day three their guide took
them out to the Reef for some variety, which provided many nice Fingermark, and Steve landed a really impressive Giant Trevally. On the final day out Steve snagged himself a 113cm Barramundi which topped off their trip. In Louise and Steve’s own words, “The Barra Lodge had great people, great atmosphere, great food and fantastic fishing! It was a once in a lifetime opportunity! All you need to do to enter this year’s draw is purchase an open competitor’s ticket and weigh-in a legal-sized fish from the required species. All the previous year’s fishing categories will remain the same, with the exception of
Barra which will now have a minimum size of 58cm. There will also be a new catch and release Bill Fish category. This will require competitors to provide dated digital photographs of the Bill Fish caught. The recently formed Weipa Game Fishing Club held their first competition back in November with great success. The Classic will be held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend from June 8 to 10, so until then keep sharpening your fishing skills and make sure to keep an eye out for more updates on what we have planned for the Classic in The Western Cape Bulletin. – The Weipa Fishing Classic Committee
