Record number of voters decide Weipa’s leaders

THE people of Weipa turned out en masse last Saturday to have their say in the Weipa Town Authority elections. A record 588 votes were recorded on the day and in pre-polling, which is an excellent result considering

voting in the Weipa elections is not compulsory. Weipa Town Authority chief executive officer, Ian Pressley believes the overwhelming community response was due to the interest generated by the candidates’ campaigns.

“There was obviously a lot of interest in the outcome of the elections, and the future of the town’s governance, as 42 per cent of the Weipa electoral roll turned out to vote,” Mr Pressley said. UU continued page 2

Record number of votes cast in Weipa election UU from page 1

“The previous best was 25 per cent in 2004. All candidates, and the community, need to be commended for the fantastic turn out.” And every last vote certainly counted, as Peter McCulkin secured his position as WTA chairperson by one vote from fellow candidate Ian McNamara and there were only five votes separating the successful elected members Brooke Barton, Stretch Noonan and Trevor Snodgrass. “The voting was so close the count was conducted several times in the presence of scrutineers and three candidates before confirming the result,” Mr Pressley said. At a post-election function held at the Albatross Bay Resort, which included announcement of the results, former WTA chair Carrie Gay thanked all candidates and the community before handing over to the new chairperson,

o Cyclone GOOD morning people, how are you all? Excited? That’s good. You’re very lucky to be here. Not everyone gets the privilege of being a town councillor, but you’ve managed it. Well done. Now, I’ve been sent up from Brisbane to help you settle in, and make sure everything starts off on the right foot. Just to explain the way we work, and some of the unwritten rules we need you to follow.

I’m sorry, councillor? Well, no, I’m afraid not. I can give you a telephone number to the lady who sorts out salaries later on. I think you’ll find her very efficient, but I don’t believe she’ll take to paying anything in advance. So sorry. Where was I? Yes, rules. Codes of conduct. All the things that make the work of government roll on. Now, I’ve asked the staff here to prepare details of all the things you are expected to do. Well, to be honest, the lists are mostly things you are not allowed do. That’s why there are so many pages. We have photocopied two boxes of regulations for

Just try and remember the main headings, and the staff members are here to help. They will always let you know if you do something wrong. Well, no, councillor. You can’t fire anyone. If you had to rely on the - how shall I put it politely? - a tight-fisted bunch of locals, you’d be in big trouble. No, Brisbane pays the bills, and your job is to represent us to the voters. Lest we forget... E S T I M AT E S o f around 1,000 people attended the Weipa ANZAC Day dawn service last Wednesday. Local Weipa RSL Sub-Branch members were thrilled with the attendance, which they said was increasing every year. Following the service, hundreds of people headed to Evans Landing to join the troops from Bravo Coy 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment for breakfast. Many stayed to toast the ANZACs with a few cold beverages, and tried their luck at crown and anchor or two-up. The ANZAC tradition continued into the afternoon with a special Aussie barbecue, live music and two-up at the Weipa Bowls Club. Tw o A u r u k u n men, Stan Kalkeeyorta and Philip Marpoondin were presented with the Australian Defence

Medal (ADM) prior to ANZAC Day. The ADM was established to recognise Australian Defence Force Regular and Reserve personnel who have demonstrated their commitment and contribution to the nation, by serving for an initial enlistment period or four years service, whichever is the lesser. Her Majesty the Queen approved the Regulations and Letters Patent for the medal on March 20, 2006 and these were promulgated in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No. S48 of March 30, 2006. The medals were presented to Mr Kalkeeyorta and and Mr Marpoondin by Bravo Coy, 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment OC (Officer Commanding), Major Jamie Heron in a special ceremony conducted in the Aurukun community.

Big fine to protect fish sustainability A PROSECUTION in the Bowen Magistrates Court has sent a strong message to the fishing community – bag limits must be respected to protect our fisheries. A $10,000 fine has been handed down to a recreational fisher who pleaded guilty to possessing excessive quantities of fish. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Glen Harsley said the fisher was intercepted after returning from an eight-week fishing trip in north Queensland. “The fisher was caught in possession of 2915 pieces of flathead fillet, when the bag limit is five, and 98 goldenline whiting which exceeds the bag limit of 30, he said. “This successful prosecution should send a serious message to fishers to understand the rules that are in place to ensure sustainable fisheries for

Queensland now and into the future. “Bag limits aim to conserve heavily exploited species and to conserve those that are susceptible to capture. “They also allow catches to be shared more equitably amongst fishers and reduce the illegal marketing of fish. “Respecting the resource means understanding and following the rules. Mr Harsley said if people were caught breaking the rules, they could be going to court. “Breaching the size and bag limits is a serious offence and one which attracts fines of up to $100,000, he said. “Fishers who do the wrong thing could receive ‘on-thespot’ infringement notices, for example, a fine of up to $400 for taking fish over the bag limit. “A ‘bag’ or ‘possession’ limit refers to the total number of fish an individual can legally take

Some of the flathead pieces the recreational fisher was found with.

and have in their possession at any one time – it does not apply on a per-day basis. “This includes the fish you have caught previously that are in your freezer at home, camp site or in your caravan. “We can all make a difference - ensure you know the limits by learning the recreational fishing rules and keeping

a copy handy at all times when fishing. To order your free copy of the Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide or the Recreational fishing size and bag limits for Queensland brochure, call 13 25 23, or you can download a copy at www. fisheries.qld.gov.au

Western Cape College Leads to Careers Expo THE Western Cape College recently held their Career Expo which was again hugely successful. With over 40 organisations or industries represented, some businesses sent representatives from Cairns, Brisbane, and as far away as Perth, to ensure WCC students had access to the best information about careers in the respective organisations. Students particularly enjoyed the Queensland Health display who had a mock accident and emergency centre set up, and the Defence Force display was also popular with most students being unable to walk past without having a turn. David Penney, from the Mercure Cairns Harbourside brought along a formal table setting, and inspired students with stories of his international experiences, and Sodexo provided a chef, who demonstrated knife skills to the students. Arts identity opens first solo exhibition JACK Andrew Wilkie-Jans is set to hold his first solo exhibition from May 1 to 5, with the official opening to be held on May 5 at C.1907 Contemporary Gallery and Art Space in Cairns. After a long career in the arts as a commentator and arts worker, this will be Jack’s first exhibition. The exhibition titled, “The First, and Last, Fleet is the culmination of Jack’s career so far, and has been promoted by the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and financially supported by the WCCCA. The exhibition will attempt to depict feelings evoked by the famous ships of Australia’s First Fleet which changed the historic, future, cultural and social context forever for both Indigenous and NonIndigenous Australians. The exhibition will depict these ships, along with the artist’s perception of the emotions at that time through dada, abstract, expressionist and impressionist paintings and sculpture. “The absence of Aboriginality in an exhibition about the most notable moment in Australian history makes the message of traditional culture and the voice of the first Aus-

LETTERS Letters to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au

WTA election candidates say thank you Peter McCulkin I AM grateful to the voters who have empowered me to take on the role of chairman of the Weipa Town Authority. I am proud to have the elected members Brooke Barton, Trevor Snodgrass and Stretch Noonan at my side for the next four years, and I look forward to working with, and building a very close relationship with, our two Rio Tinto appointed members Ben Laidlaw and Troy McNamara. I also look forward to possibly welcoming a new Traditional Owner appointee in the very near future. I am grateful for Ian McNamara and the other candidates who sought this role. Their convictions have significantly strengthened Weipa’s governance process, as evidenced by an historic voter turn-out and election result. I have taken notice of the closeness of the election result. Ian and I have agreed to meet regularly as a consequence, and I will certainly be heeding his sage advice. I commend the former chair Mrs Carrie Gay for her leadership and accomplishments over the past four years. It has been our former colleagues who endorsed Weipa’s Community Plan, developed in broad consultation with Weipa’s residents. The Plan has provided this new team with a ‘blueprint’ for the future. I am fully committed to reporting to the residents of Weipa on its implementation. Thank you again for your trust in me and the team, we will be listening to you, our constituents. Peter McCulkin Chairman Weipa Town Authority

Stretch Noonan I WOULD like to thank all the people of Weipa who took five minutes out of their lives to have their say in the outcome of the WTA election last Saturday, and at the pre-polling. We had a record number

of voters which shows the excitement that was generated by the candidates, and the care people have for our town. All the candidates in the election offered great leadership values for the town of Weipa, and for those of us that were voted in as members and chair, may we represent you to the best of our ability, and help steer Weipa towards being a better town for everyone now, and in the future. I offer my condolences to those who were not voted in, but we the elected will endeavour to make you and the town proud of our work over the next four years. Stretch Noonan Deputy Chair Weipa Town Authority

Trevor Snodgrass THANK you to all who voted for me in the recent Local Council election. I will be doing my very best to carry out my promises. As previously stated I am keen to see the town progress in a controlled way. Normalisation, in my opinion, is some way off, however we should be moving in that direction. Thanks once again for your support. Trevor Snodgrass Elected Member Weipa Town Authority

Brooke Barton THANK you to everyone who took time out of their day to turn up on Saturday and vote at the Weipa elections. There was some very stiff competition, and some amazing candidates threw their hat in the ring! I’d like to congratulate everyone (Tammy Freeman, Peter Miller, Stefan Le Roux, Trevor Snodgrass, Stretch Noonan, Bill Ennis, Gina Jenkins, Ian McNamara and Peter McCulkin) on the time and effort they spent on their campaigns, and therefore the interest they generated for these elections. Ultimately, there is only one chair and three elected member positions and I am really proud and excited to be working

with Peter McCulkin, Trevor Snodgrass, Stretch Noonan, along with Ben Laidlaw, Troy McNamara, the appointed Traditional Owner and the WTA staff. Thanks again to everyone who supported me, and to my husband, Bart, and daughter, Kayla-Ruth, for being so patient and understanding (even after living on noodles for the past month)! I look forward to serving the next four years as a member of the WTA council and to serving the people of Weipa in this role. Brooke Barton Elected Member Weipa Town Authority

Stefan Le Roux WELL, the people have spoken. Their decision is sovereign and we must all respect it. I wish good luck to those who will govern Weipa for the next four years. I also want to extend a heartfelt word of thanks to those who have nominated and supported me throughout the election and those who have taken the time to vote for me on Saturday. To those who have not voted for me, there will be another opportunity in four years. To Mr Ian McNamara I wish to say “well done sir! You might not have the position, but you have much more. You have the respect and admiration of an entire community. This is something you have earned the hard way; it does not come through a position. The way in which you conducted you’re campaign reminded me of the famous words of Eldridge Cleaver: “Respect commands itself - it can neither be given nor withheld when it is due. God bless. Stefan Le Roux

Tammy Freeman THANK you so much to the 260 people who took the time to come and vote for me on Saturday for the WTA Election, I really appreciate your support.

Thanks to my fantastic family for all your support during the campaign, and to the team at Weipa Community Care for putting up with me during the campaign. On Saturday Weipa spoke out to the complicated administration arrangements that we live under, and the government, that we are ready to be heard. An overwhelming turn out to vote - congratulations Weipa. The camaraderie amongst all of the candidates that turned up to greet the community on voting day was demonstrative of the fact that we were all there for the right reasons, the betterment of our community. I was very proud to be part of that fine group of people on election day. Congratulations to our new chair, Peter McCulkin, you will be fantastic Pete. Well done to the successful new WTA members, Brooke Barton, Stretch Noonan and Trevor Snodgrass. I am super proud that if I had to be knocked out of the race that it was the fabulous Brooke Barton and Stretch Noonan that did it. I know you both will truly work for the community without bias, and with integrity. We had a great turnout for the vote on Saturday, and it was fantastic to see Weipa cares so much about our future. To our new Weipa leadership team, I wish you all the best for the next four years. Tammy Freeman

Peter Miller I WOULD like to offer my congratulations to all the successful candidates in the local elections. A big thank you to the returning officer and his team, and a special thank you to all who voted, whether it was for me or not. For me there will be no more night time meetings, time to catch up on “Home and Away, and perhaps re-introduce my boat to the water. Thanks everyone. Peter Miller

ANZAC Day at Bowlies a huge success

Fond farewell after 30 years

ANZAC Day was celebrated in fine style at the Weipa Bowls Club last week. Two-up was a huge success, thanks to Kenny Pappin’s hard work, and was enjoyed by many. Weipa Bowls Club will donate $1513 to Legacy, raised from patron donations and a sausage sizzle ($2 from each sale went to Legacy). I would like to thank the 51st Battalion for lending us the tarp, and also the Weipa residents for supporting this Legacy fundraiser so enthusiastically. Nick Prus General manager/secretary Weipa Bowls Club

C O N G R AT U L AT I O N S t o Peter McCulkin, newly elected chair of Weipa Town Authority, and elected members Trevor Snodgrass, Brooke Barton and Stretch Noonan. Here’s to an exciting four years for Weipa. To the other candidates - you are all winners, and obviously care deeply about the town. I admire everyone who puts themselves forward to serve. With my departure, Weipa does now not have a civil marriage celebrant. I would urge anyone who would be interested in this role to enrol in Certificate IV in Marriage Celebrancy from TAFE or a private provider.

It can be a lot of fun and very rewarding. You do not make much money out of it as the average number of local weddings is about eight annually. Until there is a qualified celebrant I am willing to perform Weipa weddings for the cost of an airfare from Cairns. Of course, if you are coming to Cairns to be married and want a civil wedding, I would be delighted to be your celebrant. You may contact me by e-mail: joyfulevents@live.com.au or phone 0488 697 765. Thank you Weipa for all your best wishes. Keith and I have loved our 30 years in this fine town. Carrie Gay

The Jewish spiritual leaders did not like messengers of God to tell them what to do, which is the same as not wanting to listen to God. In the end God sent his Son Jesus as a messenger and they were in the process of rejecting and killing him too. In his following parable to these leaders the Lord, in verses 9-11 said that he was like a cornerstone of a building, a stone that was very important in the stone building works of the time. “What then will the owner of the vineyard do?” asked Jesus. He will come and kill those tenants and hand the vineyard over to oth-

ers. Surely you have read this scripture? The stone which the builders rejected as worthless turned out to be the most important of all. This was done by the Lord; what a wonderful sight it is!” Because of this rejection the Lord God was going to hand his blessings over to the Gentile peoples (non-Jews), and the Lord would be the most important cornerstone in his building of his new people, known together as the Church. Although the Church would consist of both Jews and Gentiles, by far the most people in the Church would be Gentiles. Like the Jewish

spiritual leaders, the acceptance or rejection of Jesus, even today, will lead to either eternal life or eternal rejection by God. The choice is still available today and ours, so don’t put it off any longer in accepting Jesus as Lord of your life. “Hear what God says: When the time came for me to show you favour, I heard you; when the day arrived for me to save you, I helped you.” Listen! This is the hour to receive God’s favour; today is the day to be saved! (2 Corinthians Ch 6 v2). The Lord be with you! Rev Michael Connolly.

Looking after your knees

Knee pain Knee injuries are very common, but can be avoided if the right precautions and preventative methods are used. Risk factors for knee pain include aging, athletic activities, and trauma injuries. The complexity of the design of the knee joint, and the fact that it is an active weight-bearing joint, are factors in making the knee one of the most commonly injured joints. Knee pain is a common complaint for middle-aged and older adults, and often results from persistent strains over many years or minor injuries early in life. Most knee injuries are caused by ligament sprains and cartilage tears, which result from certain types of movements which can be avoided. Other knee injuries are the result of consistent wear and tear on the joint caused from weak muscles around the knee or an irregular gait. In general, women are at a higher risk for both sports-related and nonathletic injuries to the knee, but anyone, regardless of gender or activity level, can benefit from behaviours that

Good Life with Jeany Schall

promote knee health. Develop a healthy fitness routine for your knees • Do exercises that strengthen the leg muscles, such as stair climbing or uphill walking, cycling and water jogging to stabilise the knee and avoid placing too much pressure on the joint. • Always warm up before exercising, and cool down afterward with light activity, such as walking. • Stretch your quadriceps and hamstrings regularly, particularly after exercising, to alleviate tension on the knee. • Avoid exercise that places too much strain on the knee. Increase the impact of your fitness routine gradually, particularly on high-impact activities, like running. Care for your knees in daily activities • Wear shoes that promote proper knee alignment. Well-fitting shoes should balance your foot and prevent the foot rolling inward. Check your shoe soles for normal wear, which should occur along the heel, outer edge and ball of the foot, and ask your doctor about orthopaedic shoes if you experience abnormalities

in your gait. • Avoid hyper-extending the knee. Never stand with your knees locked, but instead allow a slight bend in your knee at all times when standing or walking. • Adopt a plan for fitness and nutrition that helps you stay in shape. People who are overweight are at higher risk for knee injuries and other joint pain. • Do well-rounded stretching of your legs regularly, even if you don’t have a fitness routine. Daily stretching helps maintain healthy knees in your everyday activities. Tips • If you play a seasonal sport, engage in cross-training or weight training year round to maintain your knee strength and avoid injury during your usual season. • If you feel knee pain developing, avoid further injury by resting, icing down your knee, using compression bandages and elevating the knee.

Shane Edwards spreads Accor group’s reconciliation message AS the Indigenous champion for Accor Hotels in Queensland, Shane Edwards provides a critical link between the hospitality business and the people of remote Cape York and the Torres Strait. Mr Edwards is taking Accor’s reconciliation message beyond his own state and community to share personal experiences and Accor’s progressive approach to indigenous employment as part of last month’s inaugural Asia Indigenous Tourism Conference (PAITC). “Hotels are great catalyst to build diversity and acceptance,” said Mr Edwards, who is also general manager of Accor’s Mercure Cairns Harbourside hotel in Cairns. “Tourism and hospitality can genuinely provide help increase awareness for indigenous cultures, both locally, nationally and at an international level. “It’s my belief that tourism – especially the hotel industry - has and will continue to play a major role in the reconciliation process.” Mr Edwards joined several guest speakers and more than 150 delegates from across the region as part of the PAITC event which was held in Darwin recently. He said the theme, Tourism and Indigenous People – Enriching our Future Together, provided a chance to unite a host of speakers from different backgrounds to share their insights into some of the trends, opportunities and challenges of indigenous tourism in the region. “The people we employ across the Accor hotel network are a melting pot of nationalities and provide a tolerant environment to accept different cultures – not least of all indigenous cultures - as part of our DNA,” said Mr Edwards. “The true diversity of guests that move through the Accor hotel network every day not only provides staff with exposure to different cultures, but allows individuals working with in hotels the chance to express and promote their own heritage and background.” Mr Edwards said that in regional areas like North Queensland, that equates to an increased awareness for

Indigenous champion for Accor Hotels in Queensland, Shane Edwards.

Australia’s indigenous culture thanks to an increased number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff now being employed, not just by Accor, but many other progressive operators playing their part in making a change. “My role of Indigenous champion was first established to assist our company in implementing many different initiatives into our region, following Accor’s commitment to our reconciliation action plan or ‘RAP’. “I’m proud to represent Accor’s experiences and share them with others in the hopes we can encourage other organisations and companies to connect with indigenous Australian’s.” The Accor hotel network commenced its national Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in March 2011, and through many initiatives are well on the pathway to achieving its first year commitments. In Queensland, Accor recently completed two job ready programs, employing 18 trainees throughout the region’s Accor network of hotels. Accor’s nationwide partnership with Reconciliation Australia highlights an ongoing commitment to improving meaningful relationships and sustainable opportunities through initiatives such as employment. RAP follows on from Accor’s pioneering ‘Indigenous Employment Program’ established in 2001. The Program has since seen over 500 Indigenous Australians employed throughout Accor’s Australian hotel network.

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A difficult aspect to Mars will leave you feeling frustrating as it seems that you cannot get anything off the ground. Be sure to focus on older tasks this week. Romance. Somebody close to you will cause you to lose your temper dramatically this week. You have a lot to do and won’t want to be held up but you may have to live it.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) You will find yourself getting annoyed when other people create a mess and expect you to clean up after them. You may have to be a little more assertive this week. Romance. You will be feeling very “homely” at the moment. Take advantage of these strong urges by spoiling your partner a few times.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

FOR KIDS

This is not the best time to mix business with pleasure. You may find yourself getting into something which is difficult to get out of. Romance. You will need to be ready for anything this week! A strong aspect to Neptune will spark your imagination, and open your mind, so don’t turn what will seem a surprise offer.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Make sure to plan and try to get things right the first time! You will feel pressured and a careless mistake made by someone else could throw your plans into disarray. Romance. Your friends may wonder what has been going on recently. The more you try to keep your plans under wraps, the more curious everyone will become.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) You will be generally feeling adventurous despite how things seem in the world. Don’t be afraid to take a punt on a financial outing and everything will seem rosier. Romance. Don’t be too aggressive, even if you feel you are being messed about. Make sure to not bring any risky moves in your professional life over to any personal relationships.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Your positive mood will be picked up by a person who has not noticed you in the past. You are in control at the moment and your self-assurance will bode well for you. Romance. You will be the centre of attention at the moment and you will be loving it. Don’t forget that other people deserve special praise as well to make sure things don’t come crashing down at the end of the month.

FINDWORD No. 96 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) A person who has little idea what to do himself may try to give you advice. Ignore it completely, however convincing their comments appear to you. Romance. If your partner is not as sympathetic as you would like, there could be trouble on the cards. Be strong and don’t be swayed by emotional arguments.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

Your head will need to focus as many others around you will have their head in the clouds. You mustn’t allow yourself to be held back by other people’s negativity as you have plenty to do and need to overcome their scepticism. Romance. A new friend will be impressed by the way you handle an unexpected crisis. This will come as a welcome confidence boost in your personal life.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) You may have to change your goals a little, if only for the short term. You might be making things too difficult for yourself. Romance. This will be a very good time for romance and, provided you don’t lose patience with your partner, you will make great strides towards solving a few questions that have been troubling you.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Contact with a strong willed and opinionated person may be interesting. You are not likely to change your beliefs overnight, but you will want to think about what this person has said. Romance. Your partner may seem a little distant and distracted over the week. Take their feelings into account and stick by your long term plans together.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death. – Albert Einstein

SOLUTIONS No. 96

Conflict over a shared possession could lead to friction with another member of your family. Be careful of the rest of your family’s opinions and it may be best to give in this time. Romance. Your partner will be right behind you this week. Be sure to use them for advice and comfort as you may find other aspects of your life difficult at the moment.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A powerful unconscious force will be shaping your behaviour at the time. Don’t be too afraid of this and be careful to not exaggerate its genuine influence. Romance. Your open minded approach to life at the moment should enhance your communications with your partner. They need to hear it loud and clear!

SPORT

Squash revelations MEMBERS of the Weipa Squash Club have played the last game of the first round in season one, so now everyone has sussed out their opponents and we will see how they compare in the next round in the lead up to the finals. In A grade, Team Stubby challenged Team Tallie and proved the stronger team in three of the four matches, even though all matches were of four or five games. A4 Ben Tantau defeated Amanda McKenzie in games only, as Amanda scored more points (3-2); A3 Chrisden Russ went down fighting in five games when he played Steve Lugsdin (2-3); and A2 Jeff Berry won in four against Glen Egan (3-1), Dave (sub) proved to be a worthy substitute for Owen when he defeated opponent Ross Hyytinen (3-1). Team Schooner narrowly defeated Team Yard Glass by one game, beginning with A4 Jay Dumbleton who took the first “long” game, but then succumbed to Dallas Goodwin’s consistent ‘nines’ (1-3). A3 Sherie Hinschen put up a good show against Wendy Long but conceded defeat (13); and A2 Grant Foster (with all ‘nines) beat his opponent Nick Brookes (with all ‘sixes) in three games (3-0). A1 Luke Dorsett played what looked like an evenlymatched four games against

Aaron Schleich, with each player winning a “long” game, however Lukas won overall (3-1). Team Pint reversed the order of nature by beating big brother Team Pot, with A3 Laurie Raleigh narrowly defeating Shane Spagnol by two points (3-1). A2 Rod Beilby defeated Shane, who played as a sub for Scott, but not before Shane took the third game to “long” (3-0). A1 Tom Murray went down (with all ‘sevens’) against Dave Edward (with all “nines”) (0-3). B grade Team Blue Lagoon thrashed it out against Team Pina Colada with B8 Renee Williams convincingly defeating Andrew Glen (3-0); B7 Kristie McManus had a bit more of a challenge against Cicely Baira (3-0), and B6 Luke Mann played a marathon match against Aleisha O’Brien and ended up the victor (3-2). B5 Bianca Borg (with all ‘nines’) and opponent Sam O’Neill (with all ‘threes’) both played consistently (3-0); B4 Emma Thomas began slowly, losing the first two games to Patrick Lightart, but snatched the next three from Patrick (3-2). B3 Tom Bellinger went down in three to Josh Donnelly (0-3); B2 Stephen Borg started out strongly against Michael Cridland, however Michael

pulled the rabbit out of the hat in the last three games (1-3). B1 Justin Hyytinen forced the first game to “long”, but went down in three to Josh Milne (0-3). Team Margarita lost to Team Martini with the first game evidencing their prowess when Martini’s B8 Charissa Hill rose to the challenge and fended off Jess Hall’s efforts (2-3). B7 Kylie Carr easily defeated Yours Squashfully in three games, (3-0). No finals for me I fear. B6 Denica Russ was defeated by a sub (for Emily Jackson) (0-3); B4 Melissa Ghee lost in three games to Omer Saeed (0-3); B3 Donna O’Neill beat Sally Parr (3-0); and B2 Ben Smith played a hearty game against Randall O’Neill, stealing one game from him (1-3). Team Mojito were the strongest team on the night, winning an impressive 19 games against Team Long Island Iced Tea’s meagre five games. B8 Lucy Boxall met with much resistance from Sam Trebble, however Lucy won (3-0). B7 Adrian Costello outplayed Shaelene Spiteri (3-0); B6 Kristie Moran won one game against Katie Delfs (1-3); B5 Fiona Newsome withstood Nicole Dearling’s challenging play (3-0); and B4 Ian New-

some conceded one game to Tim Manning but won (3-1). B2 Ben Braun easily won the first two games, however Chris Bienvenu rallied to the cause and forced the third to a “long” game, Chris subsequently losing (3-0). B1 Adam Woodhouse stole the show in the first game against Steve Moore, with Steve scoring a “duck” (in cricket terms), then in the second game, vice versa – with Adam recording a “duck”. Adam settled down to take the last two games and win the match (3-1). – Yours squashfully, Ruth Harris

On Super Sunday the big biting Sharks tore shreds into a Raiders outfit while the Tigers just overcome a fast finishing slippery Eels team and thanks to a Benji Marshall field goal they went home with the cookies. Monday night saw the Knights have a solid win over the very poor Panthers although it did come at a cost with four potential Blues origin players injured during their triumphant win. The Northern Pride bounced back to the winners circle on Saturday night against the Sunshine Coast . It was very pleasing to see the boys getting back to their best and I must say captain Ty Williams certainly did lead from the front with some punishing defence and some very flamboyant attack. This week the Pride take on the 2011 premiers in Wynnum Manly and I’m predicting them to be the first team to beat this good team in 2012. Round nine only gets bigger and better this week in the NRL and my match of the round will be between the Rabbitohs and Sharks in Monday night footy as it could

Scotty’s AFL round-up Azrael arrived on Saturday and I spent the back end of last week doing my best to win the “unsung proceeded to put the wind up me from hero award” around at our house, the moment she set eyes upon me. keeping up the one per centres, Management and The Princess are while trying to shake the hard tag smitten with the kitten and can’t see put on by both The Princess and what the problem is. The breeze blew in at about 5:30 on footy, but apart from that the R&R was Sunday afternoon and I thought it was a bit light-on. Management had escaped and left the dry season really kicking in and we The Princess Acting for a few days could kiss goodbye to the rain. I soon realised, as I checked the while she went south and brought back the latest addition to the household, a scores, that it was in fact the sigh of relief emanating from the home of Burmese cat. Sharks put huge bite into NRL surfboard

THE Cronulla Sharks have had their best start to the NRL in a very long time, as a matter of fact it’s been like the song As The Days Go By. Todd Carney has been absolutely fantastic along with a very enthusiastic young team and I must say coach Shane Flanagan is certainly steering his team in the right direction for a finals berth in 2012. Once again Round eight of the NRL produced some blockbusting games. In a emotional day on Anzac Day the Dragons scored on the buzzer to overcome a very fired up Roosters. In Melbourne the Storm carried on their winning ways with a convincing win over the Warriors. Friday night footy saw the mighty Broncos hand out a free footballing lesson to the struggling Titans while the Sea Eagles won the battle against the Bulldogs. I’m sure Giembra would have been one little happy chappy during the game. The Rabbititohs raced off to a blistering start against the Cowboys and the North Queenslanders couldn’t rope in the Bunnies.

ROUND 6 – Wed, May 4 - Sun, May 6 FRI, MAY 4 Western Bulldogs v Collingwood @ Etihad Stadium SAT, MAY 5 Essendon v Brisbane @ Etihad Stadium Geelong v Melbourne @ Skilled Stadium Gold Coast v Fremantle @ Metricon Stadium St Kilda v Hawthorn @ MCG Sydney v Adelaide @ SCG SUN, MAY 6 Carlton v GWS @ Etihad Stadium Port Adelaide v Richmond @ Aurora Stadium West Coast v Nth Melb @ Pattersons Stadium The Bald Eagle as the siren blew in the game between the Eagles and the Tigers. A close call, and you have to feel for the Tigers and their supporters. Wait for when the win comes and the noise from the Tiger army will be something to behold. I reckon they need to give away the idea of video re-plays during the games. It clearly is not adding anything to the game and is creating confusion for all, including the umpires. Speaking of confusion, how about the current focus on sliding into the contest? The flavour of the week is causing confusion and a lot of hot air in the press (Western Cape Bulletin excepted). I think it must be a function of the speed of the game, and the efforts to protect the head. Players seem confused, and what were instinctive actions are being adjusted, causing unpractised and sometimes clumsy

approaches to the ball and opponents alike. It was a disaster for me this week in the tips, I’ve dropped my bundle. Five for me and I can only improve from here. The leader board is still tight, with some quality efforts, and eights and nines the norm. Keep it up guys. This week I’m going for broke with the Dogs, Dons, Cats, Dockers, Hawks, Swans, Blues, Port and Eagles. I’m getting excited as I’m heading down to Melbourne in a few weeks, taking the Alakanum Couch Sleeper with me to introduce a rugby person to the great game, seeing the Cats and Pies on a Friday night at the G. Cannot wait. Feel free to tweet @brolga75 with thoughts and comments on the games that might get a run in the weekly wrap. I’m off for now as the cat has a funny look in its eye and I’m not hanging around to find out what it’s about. Happy tipping, see you next week. Scotty

At time of printing, both local fishing guides Alan Philliskirk from Fish’s Fly and Sport Fishing and Dave Newman from Weipa Fishing Adventures, have offered their services to make this possible. In keeping with Weipa’s spirit, the Creek to Coast team have also offered to lend a hand during the event and will be onstage and around the grounds throughout the weekend. Volunteers needed to help out Weipa Soccer Club

WEIPA Junior Soccer Club needs your help! What makes our club great is the parents and players giving their time and talents to our club. Can you help out? Two committee roles are vacant and need to be filled, so please speak to Blue or Sandy if you can take on a role. Thank you to the referees, parent game leaders, Squirts, canteen volunteers and the game write-up helpers for your support. Coaching for Teens, Titans and Senior Titans is on Mondays at 5pm. Coaching for Squirts and Tykes is Wednesdays at 3.15 pm. Parent help and support at training is appreciated. No games next week for the long weekend. Soccer resumes May 12. All players need to arrive 20 minutes early before the start of their game and gather outside the P&C Shed. Players should be wearing black shorts, sandshoes/soccer shoes, shin pads and club socks over the shin pads. Club socks and shin pads are available for sale on the day. Results from another fantastic round of games, with all players really enjoying themselves, follows: Squirts Gold/Navy V White/Navy Grayson scored first goal after both teams just missed a goal each. Tai evened the scores a minute later. After a quick drink break they were all back out there ready to play. After some neat footwork by Ava, Jay nipped in and scored a goal. A quick feast of orange at half time and they were back on the field. Three of the White team tried to save a gaol however Tai managed to get around

them. Isaac then followed with a second goal for the White team. Tai ran the ball down half the field and scored with Isaac hot on his heels with a lot of close kicking. Great teamwork from Jet and Harry. Jay scored another goal. Tai scored again after a big kick from Isaac. Tai scored again ending the game. Gold /Navy 9 White/ Navy 2. Squirts Gold /Green V White/Black The Squirts are really getting it together to play decent soccer games full of fun, enthusiasm and some nifty kicking. Outstanding game from Darius and Lincoln who did their best to run the field and get the ball. Awesome efforts from Jack and Shonika with some great footwork skills showing. Tremendous teamwork from Toby and Ethan to keep the game flowing. Well done Squirts! Tykes Red v Blue Early goal for the Reds by Daniel followed shortly afterwards by another goal. Daniel was on Fire! Great defending by Blue. Great save by Connor for Blue. Excellent gaol by Tom for Red. Tremendous run up and score by McFarlane to put the Blues on the scoreboard. Excellent teamwork by Riley for Blue. Great support for Red from Tayla and Riley S. Tayla displayed great dribbling skills and almost scored for Red. Blues worked really hard despite only having three players. McFarlane scored for Blue followed by an excellent save by Riley for Blue. Very solid performance from Riley S for Red. Hard work and 100 per

cent effort saw Riley (Blue) score just before the fulltime siren. Well done to both teams for a great game. Red 7 Blue 3. Tykes Green V Gold Evander showed great ball skills. Kieran scored a difficult goal. Swan did an awesome kick-off and Meagan showed great team work. Sam kicked the first goal of second half. Thank you to Jaylen for stepping in for Green to make up numbers. Tianna showed she really enjoyed the game. Green forfeit to Gold. Teens Red V Blue A great game enjoyed by all. Red 6 Blue 5. Teens Gold V Green A well matched game with both teams tied on 10 all. Titans Gold V Green Another great game enjoyed by all players. Senior Titans Numbers were a bit short this week so there was no slacking off for anybody. Axel scored first goal for Blue and then second as well. Liam K scored for Blue one on one with goalie. Axel scored again for Blue. Jack saved many attempts at goal. Loved the fancy footwork Jeffrey – could be on “Dancing with the Stars”! Jeffery took a half field run to score next for Blue. Spectators could have been watching ten pin bowling today the number of times we saw two or three players falls over like skittles! Liam S scored off another header and then scored off a corner shot after some good teamwork. Good game players. Blue 6 Red 5.

Danielle passes the ball before the challenge could be completed by Edan in the Senior Tiatan match.

Darius and Shonika challenge the ball with support from Toby, Lincoln and Ethan.

Plenty of determination was shown during the match by Jet, Tai, Ava, Harry and Isaac.

WEIPA Billfish anglers held a tournament over eight days in April, with 29 anglers fishing in 10 boats. There were 12 Billfish raised with only one caught and tagged. Tag Team won the comp with Nicky Perryman the angler and Darren Lee skipper. The presentation was held on Tuesday night, April 24 with Duane Singleton presenting Nicky and Darren with four Shimano TLD20 reels, supplied by Tackle World Weipa, for their effort. It was only just the start of the season with all anglers agreeing it was a great competition and looking forward to the next one being held in the Weipa Family Fishing Classic on the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June.

Barra are again the talk of the town with reports of multiple captures being taken. There doesn’t seem to be any particular waterway fishing better than any other. Fish up to 128cm have been caught. These fish are our breeders so handle them with care. Whatever you do, don’t lift the fish by the mouth as this will break their neck, and they won’t survive. Remember, the bag limit for Barra is FIVE in your possession at any time, including what you have in the freezer at home. Don’t know if any of you have seen the Fisheries report but they booked an angler for having over the limit and he was fined $10,000. One very expensive fishing trip.

Tuskfish are again in good numbers around Duyfken and the shoals up around Penne. Most baits are working, but try not to use fish bait as this will bring the Sharks on quicker. Threadfin Salmon are also on the chew at the Mission River bridge, but your best bet is to fish the flood of the incoming tide. The flood is when the tide starts moving up onto the flats and gutters, and the bait fish are trying to get sanctuary in the mangrove roots. I have had great success with the Wonder Wobblers type of lures as they imitate bait fish perfectly. As I said last week this is my last fishing report. I will definitely miss Weipa and all the friendships I have made.

Weipa will be on my holiday list, and if you are ever in Townsville look me up at Pro Tackle on Dalrymple Road next to Key Motors, the Mazda dealership. Have a great life, and as they say “ tight lines. – Terri Garlick
