Record number of voters decide Weipa’s leaders

THE people of Weipa turned out en masse last Saturday to have their say in the Weipa Town Authority elections. A record 588 votes were recorded on the day and in pre-polling, which is an excellent result considering

voting in the Weipa elections is not compulsory. Weipa Town Authority chief executive officer, Ian Pressley believes the overwhelming community response was due to the interest generated by the candidates’ campaigns.

“There was obviously a lot of interest in the outcome of the elections, and the future of the town’s governance, as 42 per cent of the Weipa electoral roll turned out to vote,” Mr Pressley said. UU continued page 2

All candidates, and the community, need to be commended for the fantastic turn out.” And every last vote certainly counted, as Peter McCulkin secured his position as WTA chairperson by one vote from fellow candidate Ian McNamara and there were only five votes separating the successful elected members Brooke Barton, Stretch Noonan and Trevor Snodgrass. “The voting was so close the count was conducted several times in the presence of scrutineers and three candidates before confirming the result,” Mr Pressley said. Lest we forget... E S T I M AT E S o f around 1,000 people attended the Weipa ANZAC Day dawn service last Wednesday. Local Weipa RSL Sub-Branch members were thrilled with the attendance, which they said was increasing every year. Following the service, hundreds of people headed to Evans Landing to join the troops from Bravo Coy 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment for breakfast. Many stayed to toast the ANZACs with a few cold beverages, and tried their luck at crown and anchor or two-up. The ANZAC tradition continued into the afternoon with a special Aussie barbecue, live music and two-up at the Weipa Bowls Club. Tw o A u r u k u n men, Stan Kalkeeyorta and Philip Marpoondin were presented with the Australian Defence

Medal (ADM) prior to ANZAC Day. The ADM was established to recognise Australian Defence Force Regular and Reserve personnel who have demonstrated their commitment and contribution to the nation, by serving for an initial enlistment period or four years service, whichever is the lesser. Her Majesty the Queen approved the Regulations and Letters Patent for the medal on March 20, 2006 and these were promulgated in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No. S48 of March 30, 2006. The medals were presented to Mr Kalkeeyorta and and Mr Marpoondin by Bravo Coy, 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment OC (Officer Commanding), Major Jamie Heron in a special ceremony conducted in the Aurukun community.

Big fine to protect fish sustainability A PROSECUTION in the Bowen Magistrates Court has sent a strong message to the fishing community – bag limits must be respected to protect our fisheries. A $10,000 fine has been handed down to a recreational fisher who pleaded guilty to possessing excessive quantities of fish. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Glen Harsley said the fisher was intercepted after returning from an eight-week fishing trip in north Queensland. “The fisher was caught in possession of 2915 pieces of flathead fillet, when the bag limit is five, and 98 goldenline whiting which exceeds the bag limit of 30,� he said. “This successful prosecution should send a serious message to fishers to understand the rules that are in place to ensure sustainable fisheries for

Queensland now and into the future. “Bag limits aim to conserve heavily exploited species and to conserve those that are susceptible to capture. “They also allow catches to be shared more equitably amongst fishers and reduce the illegal marketing of fish. “Respecting the resource means understanding and following the rules.� Mr Harsley said if people were caught breaking the rules, they could be going to court. “Breaching the size and bag limits is a serious offence and one which attracts fines of up to $100,000,� he said. “Fishers who do the wrong thing could receive ‘on-thespot’ infringement notices, for example, a fine of up to $400 for taking fish over the bag limit. “A ‘bag’ or ‘possession’ limit refers to the total number of fish an individual can legally take

Andoom Oval Draft Master Plan available for public feedback THE Acting Chair of Weipa Town Authority, Mr Stretch Noonan has encouraged residents to provide feedback on a Draft Master Plan for Andoom Oval (also known as Eastern Oval). “In March, consultants Strategic Leisure Group conferred with the main user groups of Andoom Oval to develop a draft master plan for consideration by the community�, Mr Noonan said. “We are asking residents to review the master plan that has been drafted and tell us what they think.�

The purpose of the project is to develop a master plan which determines the best mix of spaces and facilities to meet the needs of the Weipa community. It incorporates a written report and a concept plan for Andoom Oval, prepared by consultants Strategic Leisure Group on behalf of Weipa Town Authority. Importantly, the master plan includes consideration of formal sport and community events such as field sports and the bull ride, as well as ensuring local residents have parkland

providing for informal activities such as walking, children’s play and exercise. Residents are encouraged to access the master plan and provide feedback before Friday, May 25, 2012. Western Cape College Leads to Careers Expo THE Western Cape College recently held their Career Expo which was again hugely successful. With over 40 organisations or industries represented, some businesses sent representatives from Cairns, Brisbane, and as far away as Perth, to ensure WCC students had access to the best information about careers in the respective organisations. Students particularly enjoyed the Queensland Health display who had a mock accident and emergency centre set up, and the Defence Force display was also popular with most students being unable to walk past without having a turn. David Penney, from the Mercure Cairns Harbourside brought along a formal table setting, and inspired students with stories of his international experiences, and Sodexo provided a chef, who demonstrated knife skills to the students. Work Start Team present jobseeker expo THE Indigenous PathWays Solutions Work Start Program team saw the culmination of their certificate training this week with the presentation of the IPS Jobseeker Expo. The expo was attended by local Traditional Owners, employers and key Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa staff. At the successful expo the IPS team demonstrated a high level of professionalism through their organisation and planning skills. Arts identity opens first solo exhibition JACK Andrew Wilkie-Jans is set to hold his first solo exhibition from May 1 to 5, with the official opening to be held on May 5 at C.1907 Contemporary Gallery and Art Space in Cairns. After a long career in the arts as a commentator and arts worker, this will be Jack’s first exhibition. The exhibition titled, “The First, and Last, Fleet� is the culmination of Jack’s career so far, and has been promoted by the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and financially supported by the WCCCA. The exhibition will attempt to depict feelings evoked by the famous ships of Australia’s First Fleet which changed the historic, future, cultural and social context forever for both Indigenous and NonIndigenous Australians. The exhibition will depict these ships, along with the artist’s perception of the emotions at that time through dada, abstract, expressionist and impressionist paintings and sculpture. “The absence of Aboriginality in an exhibition about the most notable moment in Australian history makes the message of traditional culture and the voice of the first Aus-

THE Napranum Indigenous Arts Program (NIAP) was launched with a community barbecue at the Ruchook Festival Grounds in Napranum on April 18. The program was developed by Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE (TNQIT) in partnership with Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council, Far North Qld Rural Division of Practitioners, CEA, Job Find, ITEC, Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreement,

VPG, and Weipa Community Care Association. Offering local Indigenous people arts training and practice the NIAP opened it’s doors for creativity on Wednesday, May 2. Initially the program will run every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm, however program facilitator Aleta Bates and Vocation Education Teacher Vide Smith are hopeful it will continue to grow and attract more popularity and support as time goes on.

WTA election candidates say thank you Peter McCulkin I AM grateful to the voters who have empowered me to take on the role of chairman of the Weipa Town Authority. I am proud to have the elected members Brooke Barton, Trevor Snodgrass and Stretch Noonan at my side for the next four years, and I look forward to working with, and building a very close relationship with, our two Rio Tinto appointed members Ben Laidlaw and Troy McNamara. I also look forward to possibly welcoming a new Traditional Owner appointee in the very near future. I am grateful for Ian McNamara and the other candidates who sought this role. Their convictions have significantly strengthened Weipa’s governance process, as evidenced by an historic voter turn-out and election result. I have taken notice of the closeness of the election result. Ian and I have agreed to meet regularly as a consequence, and I will certainly be heeding his sage advice. I commend the former chair Mrs Carrie Gay for her leadership and accomplishments over the past four years. It has been our former colleagues who endorsed Weipa’s Community Plan, developed in broad consultation with Weipa’s residents. The Plan has provided this new team with a ‘blueprint’ for the future. I am fully committed to reporting to the residents of Weipa on its implementation. Thank you again for your trust in me and the team, we will be listening to you, our constituents. Thanks to my fantastic family for all your support during the campaign, and to the team at Weipa Community Care for putting up with me during the campaign. On Saturday Weipa spoke out to the complicated administration arrangements that we live under, and the government, that we are ready to be heard. An overwhelming turn out to vote - congratulations Weipa. The camaraderie amongst all of the candidates that turned up to greet the community on voting day was demonstrative of the fact that we were all there for the right reasons, the betterment of our community. ANZAC Day was celebrated in fine style at the Weipa Bowls Club last week. Two-up was a huge success, thanks to Kenny Pappin’s hard work, and was enjoyed by many. Weipa Bowls Club will donate $1513 to Legacy, raised from patron donations and a sausage sizzle ($2 from each sale went to Legacy). I would like to thank the 51st Battalion for lending us the tarp, and also the Weipa residents for supporting this Legacy fundraiser so enthusiastically. spiritual leaders, the acceptance or rejection of Jesus, even today, will lead to either eternal life or eternal rejection by God. The choice is still available today and ours, so don’t put it off any longer in accepting Jesus as Lord of your life. “Hear what God says: When the time came for me to show you favour, I heard you; when the day arrived for me to save you, I helped you.” Listen! Looking after your knees

Knee pain Knee injuries are very common, but can be avoided if the right precautions and preventative methods are used. Risk factors for knee pain include aging, athletic activities, and trauma injuries. The complexity of the design of the knee joint, and the fact that it is an active weight-bearing joint, are factors in making the knee one of the most commonly injured joints. Knee pain is a common complaint for middle-aged and older adults, and often results from persistent strains over many years or minor injuries early in life. Most knee injuries are caused by ligament sprains and cartilage tears, which result from certain types of movements which can be avoided. Other knee injuries are the result of consistent wear and tear on the joint caused from weak muscles around the knee or an irregular gait. In general, women are at a higher risk for both sports-related and nonathletic injuries to the knee, but anyone, regardless of gender or activity level, can benefit from behaviours that

promote knee health. Develop a healthy fitness routine for your knees • Do exercises that strengthen the leg muscles, such as stair climbing or uphill walking, cycling and water jogging to stabilise the knee and avoid placing too much pressure on the joint. • Always warm up before exercising, and cool down afterward with light activity, such as walking. • Stretch your quadriceps and hamstrings regularly, particularly after exercising, to alleviate tension on the knee. • Avoid exercise that places too much strain on the knee. Increase the impact of your fitness routine gradually, particularly on high-impact activities, like running. Care for your knees in daily activities • Wear shoes that promote proper knee alignment. Well-fitting shoes should balance your foot and prevent the foot rolling inward. Check your shoe soles for normal wear, which should occur along the heel, outer edge and ball of the foot, and ask your doctor about orthopaedic shoes if you experience abnormalities

in your gait. • Avoid hyper-extending the knee. Never stand with your knees locked, but instead allow a slight bend in your knee at all times when standing or walking. • Adopt a plan for fitness and nutrition that helps you stay in shape. People who are overweight are at higher risk for knee injuries and other joint pain. • Do well-rounded stretching of your legs regularly, even if you don’t have a fitness routine. Daily stretching helps maintain healthy knees in your everyday activities. Tips • If you play a seasonal sport, engage in cross-training or weight training year round to maintain your knee strength and avoid injury during your usual season. • If you feel knee pain developing, avoid further injury by resting, icing down your knee, using compression bandages and elevating the knee.

Shane Edwards spreads Accor group’s reconciliation message AS the Indigenous champion for Accor Hotels in Queensland, Shane Edwards provides a critical link between the hospitality business and the people of remote Cape York and the Torres Strait. Mr Edwards is taking Accor’s reconciliation message beyond his own state and community to share personal experiences and Accor’s progressive approach to indigenous employment as part of last month’s inaugural Asia Indigenous Tourism Conference (PAITC). “Hotels are great catalyst to build diversity and acceptance,” said Mr Edwards, who is also general manager of Accor’s Mercure Cairns Harbourside hotel in Cairns. “Tourism and hospitality can genuinely provide help increase awareness for indigenous cultures, both locally, nationally and at an international level. “It’s my belief that tourism – especially the hotel industry - has and will continue to play a major role in the reconciliation process.” Mr Edwards joined several guest speakers and more than 150 delegates from across the region as part of the PAITC event which was held in Darwin recently. He said the theme, Tourism and Indigenous People – Enriching our Future Together, provided a chance to unite a host of speakers from different backgrounds to share their insights into some of the trends, opportunities and challenges of indigenous tourism in the region. “The people we employ across the Accor hotel network are a melting pot of nationalities and provide a tolerant environment to accept different cultures – not least of all indigenous cultures - as part of our DNA,” said Mr Edwards. “The true diversity of guests that move through the Accor hotel network every day not only provides staff with exposure to different cultures, but allows individuals working with in hotels the chance to express and promote their own heritage and background.” Mr Edwards said that in regional areas like North Queensland, that equates to an increased awareness for

In Queensland, Accor recently completed two job ready programs, employing 18 trainees throughout the region’s Accor network of hotels. Accor’s nationwide partnership with Reconciliation Australia highlights an ongoing commitment to improving meaningful relationships and sustainable opportunities through initiatives such as employment. RAP follows on from Accor’s pioneering ‘Indigenous Employment Program’ established in 2001. The Program has since seen over 500 Indigenous Australians employed throughout Accor’s Australian hotel network.

Squash revelations MEMBERS of the Weipa Squash Club have played the last game of the first round in season one, so now everyone has sussed out their opponents and we will see how they compare in the next round in the lead up to the finals. In A grade, Team Stubby challenged Team Tallie and proved the stronger team in three of the four matches, even though all matches were of four or five games. A4 Ben Tantau defeated Amanda McKenzie in games only, as Amanda scored more points (3-2); A3 Chrisden Russ went down fighting in five games when he played Steve Lugsdin (2-3); and A2 Jeff Berry won in four against Glen Egan (3-1), Dave (sub) proved to be a worthy substitute for Owen when he defeated opponent Ross Hyytinen (3-1). Team Schooner narrowly defeated Team Yard Glass by one game, beginning with A4 Jay Dumbleton who took the first “long” game, but then succumbed to Dallas Goodwin’s consistent ‘nines’ (1-3). A3 Sherie Hinschen put up a good show against Wendy Long but conceded defeat (13); and A2 Grant Foster (with all ‘nines) beat his opponent Nick Brookes (with all ‘sixes) in three games (3-0). Sharks put huge bite into NRL surfboard

THE Cronulla Sharks have had their best start to the NRL in a very long time, as a matter of fact it’s been like the song As The Days Go By. Todd Carney has been absolutely fantastic along with a very enthusiastic young team and I must say coach Shane Flanagan is certainly steering his team in the right direction for a finals berth in 2012. Once again Round eight of the NRL produced some blockbusting games. In a emotional day on Anzac Day the Dragons scored on the buzzer to overcome a very fired up Roosters. In Melbourne the Storm carried on their winning ways with a convincing win over the Warriors. Friday night footy saw the mighty Broncos hand out a free footballing lesson to the struggling Titans while the Sea Eagles won the battle against the Bulldogs. I’m sure Giembra would have been one little happy chappy during the game. The Rabbititohs raced off to a blistering start against the Cowboys and the North Queenslanders couldn’t rope in the Bunnies.

I reckon they need to give away the idea of video re-plays during the games. It clearly is not adding anything to the game and is creating confusion for all, including the umpires. Speaking of confusion, how about the current focus on sliding into the contest? The flavour of the week is causing confusion and a lot of hot air in the press (Western Cape Bulletin excepted). I think it must be a function of the speed of the game, and the efforts to protect the head. Players seem confused, and what were instinctive actions are being adjusted, causing unpractised and sometimes clumsy

approaches to the ball and opponents alike. It was a disaster for me this week in the tips, I’ve dropped my bundle. Five for me and I can only improve from here. The leader board is still tight, with some quality efforts, and eights and nines the norm. Keep it up guys. This week I’m going for broke with the Dogs, Dons, Cats, Dockers, Hawks, Swans, Blues, Port and Eagles. I’m getting excited as I’m heading down to Melbourne in a few weeks, taking the Alakanum Couch Sleeper with me to introduce a rugby person to the great game, seeing the Cats and Pies on a Friday night at the G. Weipa Fishing Classic to feature on Creek to Coast WHETHER you’re an avid angler or not you’re here in this beautiful part of Far North Queensland for the diversity, culture and action-packed way of life. This year, thanks to the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce, we’ve been given the opportunity to showcase our town to the rest of the country, as Channel 7’s popular outdoor adventure TV series, Creek to Coast, hits Weipa’s streets and estuaries next month for the 2012 Weipa Fishing Classic. of fishing into a life-long career, and fellow outdoor enthusiast Dean Miller, the Creek to Coast team will bring together a half-hour televised show compiled with footage taken from this year’s Weipa Fishing Classic, together with exciting fishing trips with local guides. The winners, with a great score of +12, were Chris May and Oliver Tata, and runnersup were Peter Hill and with +9. The NTPs went to Peter Hill, Brett Elms and Chris May. Sunday’s event was a Single Stroke, Monthly Medal sponsored by

Blackwoods. The event was closely contested with three players finishing with a 66 nett. The eventual winner, on a countback, was Gavin Wust from Chris May, with Oliver Tata coming in third. There was also a couple of other good scores of 69 nett from Tonia and Megsy. The NTPs went to Steve Wust, Brett Elms and Brendan Moffat. The monthly medal winners for March were

Ollie for A grade, Gavin for B grade and Tonia for C grade. This weekend the Weipa Open, sponsored by Goodline, will be held and nomination forms are available at the club. Volunteers needed to help out Weipa Soccer Club

WEIPA Junior Soccer Club needs your help! What makes our club great is the parents and players giving their time and talents to our club. Can you help out? Two committee roles are vacant and need to be filled, so please speak to Blue or Sandy if you can take on a role. Thank you to the referees, parent game leaders, Squirts, canteen volunteers and the game write-up helpers for your support. Coaching for Teens, Titans and Senior Titans is on Mondays at 5pm. Coaching for Squirts and Tykes is Wednesdays at 3.15 pm. Parent help and support at training is appreciated. No games next week for the long weekend. Soccer resumes May 12. All players need to arrive 20 minutes early before the start of their game and gather outside the P&C Shed. Players should be wearing black shorts, sandshoes/soccer shoes, shin pads and club socks over the shin pads. Club socks and shin pads are available for sale on the day. Results from another fantastic round of games, with all players really enjoying themselves, follows: Squirts Gold/Navy V White/Navy Grayson scored first goal after both teams just missed a goal each. Tai evened the scores a minute later. After a quick drink break they were all back out there ready to play. After some neat footwork by Ava, Jay nipped in and scored a goal. A quick feast of orange at half time and they were back on the field. Three of the White team tried to save a gaol however Tai managed to get around

them. Isaac then followed with a second goal for the White team. Tai ran the ball down half the field and scored with Isaac hot on his heels with a lot of close kicking. Great teamwork from Jet and Harry. Jay scored another goal. Tai scored again after a big kick from Isaac. Tai scored again ending the game. Gold /Navy 9 White/ Navy 2. Squirts Gold /Green V White/Black The Squirts are really getting it together to play decent soccer games full of fun, enthusiasm and some nifty kicking. Outstanding game from Darius and Lincoln who did their best to run the field and get the ball. Awesome efforts from Jack and Shonika with some great footwork skills showing. Tremendous teamwork from Toby and Ethan to keep the game flowing. Well done Squirts! Tykes Red v Blue Early goal for the Reds by Daniel followed shortly afterwards by another goal. Daniel was on Fire! Great defending by Blue. Great save by Connor for Blue. Excellent gaol by Tom for Red. Tremendous run up and score by McFarlane to put the Blues on the scoreboard. Excellent teamwork by Riley for Blue. Great support for Red from Tayla and Riley S. Tayla displayed great dribbling skills and almost scored for Red. Blues worked really hard despite only having three players. McFarlane scored for Blue followed by an excellent save by Riley for Blue. Very solid performance from Riley S for Red. Hard work and 100 per

cent effort saw Riley (Blue) score just before the fulltime siren. Well done to both teams for a great game. Red 7 Blue 3. Tykes Green V Gold Evander showed great ball skills. Kieran scored a difficult goal. Swan did an awesome kick-off and Meagan showed great team work. Sam kicked the first goal of second half. Thank you to Jaylen for stepping in for Green to make up numbers. Tianna showed she really enjoyed the game. Green forfeit to Gold. Teens Red V Blue A great game enjoyed by all. Red 6 Blue 5. Teens Gold V Green A well matched game with both teams tied on 10 all. Titans Gold V Green Another great game enjoyed by all players. Senior Titans Numbers were a bit short this week so there was no slacking off for anybody. Axel scored first goal for Blue and then second as well. Liam K scored for Blue one on one with goalie. Axel scored again for Blue. Jack saved many attempts at goal. Loved the fancy footwork Jeffrey – could be on “Dancing with the Stars”! Jeffery took a half field run to score next for Blue. Spectators could have been watching ten pin bowling today the number of times we saw two or three players falls over like skittles! Liam S scored off another header and then scored off a corner shot after some good teamwork. Good game players. Blue 6 Red 5.

Swimmers of the week this week were Tom McCahon and Alissa Koina. Tom swam four PBs from four swims, including taking nearly ďŹ ve seconds off his 50m buttery time. Alissa swam four PBs from five swims, including taking over ďŹ ve seconds off her 200m freestyle time, and also set a new club record in the girls 9-year old 50m freestyle with a time of 37.87 seconds. Three PBs also came from

In today’s column, I would like to introduce one of the real personalities in the Weipa Dirt Kart Club - Troy Batterham. Troy is the current vice president, and a tireless ambassador of the club He states that his age is 21 (you’re joking) and lists his hobbies as dirt karting, walks on the beach without a shirt, and ďŹ xing his dirt kart. Troy’s weapon of choice when on the track is a brand new BRK Viper chassis from South Australia, with a Yamaha KT100s power plant. Like many of us who race, he was ďŹ rst introduced to the sport by Ben West, and was lucky enough in February of this year ,while in South

WEIPA Billfish anglers held a tournament over eight days in April, with 29 anglers fishing in 10 boats. There were 12 Billfish raised with only one caught and tagged. Tag Team won the comp with Nicky Perryman the angler and Darren Lee skipper. The presentation was held on Tuesday night, April 24 with Duane Singleton presenting Nicky and Darren with four Shimano TLD20 reels, supplied by Tackle World Weipa, for their effort. It was only just the start of the season with all anglers agreeing it was a great competition and looking forward to the next one being held in the Weipa Family Fishing Classic on the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June.

Barra are again the talk of the town with reports of multiple captures being taken. There doesn’t seem to be any particular waterway fishing better than any other. Fish up to 128cm have been caught. These fish are our breeders so handle them with care. Whatever you do, don’t lift the fish by the mouth as this will break their neck, and they won’t survive. Remember, the bag limit for Barra is FIVE in your possession at any time, including what you have in the freezer at home. Don’t know if any of you have seen the Fisheries report but they booked an angler for having over the limit and he was fined $10,000. One very expensive fishing trip.

Tuskfish are again in good numbers around Duyfken and the shoals up around Penne. Most baits are working, but try not to use fish bait as this will bring the Sharks on quicker. Threadfin Salmon are also on the chew at the Mission River bridge, but your best bet is to fish the flood of the incoming tide. The flood is when the tide starts moving up onto the flats and gutters, and the bait fish are trying to get sanctuary in the mangrove roots. I have had great success with the Wonder Wobblers type of lures as they imitate bait fish perfectly. As I said last week this is my last fishing report. I will definitely miss Weipa and all the friendships I have made.
