Ship sensor a world first for reef research A LANDMARK three-year, $1 million research project, announced this week by Rio Tinto Alcan, CSIRO and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, will be the first of its kind to monitor ocean chemistry along the length of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Three years in the making, the Future Reef MAP project involves the deployment of an ocean sensor system on an existing Rio Tinto vessel that travels between Weipa and Gladstone. The vessel, the RTM Wakmatha, will regularly collect samples and record data that will assist in understanding the impacts of climate change on the reef. The data will be collected from along the entire length of the Great Barrier Reef, which means for the first time detailed information about ocean chemistry will be gathered from widely varying habitats. This will provide reef authorities and researchers with new insights to assist management of the Great Barrier Reef. UU continued page 2

Rio Tinto Alcan president and chief executive officer, Bauxite and Alumina, Pat Fiore said embarking on this latest project reinforced Rio Tinto Alcan’s commitment to playing its part in protecting the reef. “Rio Tinto’s shipping operations provide the perfect opportunity to collect vital data from the Great Barrier Reef, Mr Fiore said. “Ships servicing our Weipa bauxite mine and Gladstone alumina refineries make round trips through the Great Barrier Reef in dedicated shipping channels, and by fitting the sensors to one of our fleet, we can assist with data capture during the ship’s regular voyage. “Our ongoing collaboration with CSIRO and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation provides an important opportunity for Rio Tinto Alcan to assist with a critical area of climate-change research and is a great example of industry and science working together, he said. CSIRO ocean carbon research team leader Dr Bronte
Tilbrook said that to protect the reef, it was necessary to understand how water chemistry, including ocean acidity levels, varies both regionally and across different habitats of the Great Barrier Reef. Dr Tilbrook said ocean acidification occurred when increasingly large quantities of carbon dioxide were absorbed by the ocean. He said acidification could have a significant impact on coral growth and may degrade and weaken reefs in the future. Studies had shown acidification could even influence the ability of some reef fish to avoid predators. “There is still a large amount of uncertainty about how resilient the reef ecosystem might be to acidification and the more knowledge we have the better, Dr Tilbrook said. “This partnership will enable a consistent, sustained approach to measuring vital signs of reef health along the same route through the Great Barrier Reef. “Data collected by the ship will help research scientists
determine how processes such as seasonal temperature change and major flood and storm events interact with longer term changes in ocean acidification. “The monitoring will also provide a foundation for assessing how ocean acidification might vary between regions of the Great Barrier Reef, and then to identify whether some parts of the reef are likely to be more vulnerable to the effects of acidification. Great Barrier Reef Foundation managing director Claire Hanratty said climate change is a significant threat to the reef, and cannot be solved by any one group on its own. “This is why the Foundation engages business, science, philanthropy and reef management to identify and fund research overseen by its Scientific Advisory Committee, towards a vision of a resilient Reef successfully adapting to climate change, Ms Hanratty said. “By bringing together the Foundation, Rio Tinto Alcan and CSIRO, this project will contribute to better understand-
ing the nature and extent of climate change’s impact on the Reef and, in doing so, assist in developing solutions-based management responses, Ms Hanratty said. Mr Fiore said Rio Tinto Alcan has a long history of involvement in research programmes focused on the iconic Great Barrier Reef. “Like so many people around Australia and the world, we share a passion for protecting the Great Barrier Reef, which is why we have worked with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and its partners since its inception in 1999 to fund high priority Reef research, he said. “As a result of this new project, vital data collected will help reef managers understand where and how acidification is having the most impact. Armed with this information, those managers will be better equipped to respond. “Ultimately, this is about helping ensure the sustainability of the reef for future generations.

WCC Residential Campus officially opened THE Western Cape Residential Campus facility was officially opened on Tuesday morning (June 5) by the Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin. More than 100 students, parents and invited guests attended the opening ceremony which was conducted under the expert guidance of MC, and Western Cape College Residential Campus student, Sabrina Ase. Following a welcome to country by Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council Deputy Mayor Ernest Madua Jr, the appreciative audience heard speeches from Western Cape College Residential Campus Head of Campus Florrie KingSmith, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa General Manager Operations Jo-anne Scarini, Mapoon Mayor Peter Guiverra, and Chairperson of the Indigenous Land Council Dr Dawn Casey, before enjoying several performances by Western Cape College Indigenous dancers. Ms Macklin said the new facility, which will cater for up to 120 Indigenous students from Far North Queensland Indigenous communities, was providing students with a safe place to stay and learn while they completed secondary schooling. “The campus will make an enormous difference for children from remote Indigenous communities in far north Queensland, and the Federal Government is proud to have provided $26.7 million towards the construction of this project, Ms Macklin said. “Until now, children wanting to finish their schooling had to travel to places like Cairns, Townsville or Brisbane, but they will now be able to stay much closer to home and attend school in Weipa. In addition, the care provided is responsive to the needs of the children and the wishes of their parents and communities. “I want to thank Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa for gifting the land for the Residential campus and the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) for their work managing its design and construction. The ILC employed 19 indigenous people to work on the construction of the building. The Queensland Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said the new facility addressed an important need in the local community. “The State Government is committed to providing Queensland students with the
best possible education experience and the Western Cape Residential Campus is another step towards that goal, Mr Langbroek said. “This campus will ensure that young people in remote communities in far north Queensland continue to be engaged and interested in their education. “Local families can be assured that their children will have access to quality education opportunities that will equip them well into the future. Both the Federal and State Governments are providing $2.5 million each to run the campus over the first five years of operation. In addition, Ms Macklin announced that the Federal Government will provide more than $34,000 to the non-profit organisation Rare Earth Foundation to run a Western Cape Youth Summit.
The two-day summit will be held in Weipa in late June and will give young people from local Indigenous communities the chance to discuss the issues they face. “This summit will give young people a chance to have a say on what’s important to them and will also help form youth councils in the communities, Ms Macklin said. The summit will cover important issues like substance abuse, employment, social and emotional support and the risks of social media. “We know the important role that young people play in Indigenous communities, and this summit will provide the opportunity to give them a voice. Following the official ceremony, parents and guests were given guided tours of the facility by Western Cape Residential Campus students.

New detention centre manager Scherger contract extended
Former Scherger Detention Centre manager Tony Rumble (left) hands over the reins to the centre’s new manager Mat Rogers (right), with DIAC regional manager, Allan Davis.
THE Department of Immigration and Citizenship has welcomed new Scherger Immigration Detention Centre manager Mat Rogers. Originally from Victoria, Mat left chilly Canberra to take up the Weipa role. A dedicated runner and snow boarder (a pursuit he will obviously be putting on hold), Mat’s claim to fame is representing Australia in dragon boat racing in China. Former manager, Tony Rumble, is
leaving Weipa after nine months and says he is taking away some special memories of the town. “It’s the people that make a place, and the people in Weipa are fantastic,” Tony said. “I’ve learned to bowl here, which is something I never thought I’d do, but the people at the Weipa Bowls Club were so welcoming and patient with me as I learned the game that it became a highlight of my stay.” Tony is returning home to Canberra.
THE existing immigration facility at Scherger RAAF base in Far North Queensland will continue to be used for another two years, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen MP, said on Tuesday. Mr Bowen said strong community support for the facility had played a significant role in the decision, combined with the ongoing requirements of the overall detention network. He said the Department of Defence had confirmed the site was not required for operational purposes during that period. “This facility has wide support among the local Weipa community, who have in fact sought the department’s commitment to extend its use,” Mr Bowen said. “Once again, the use of the facility during the next wet season will help alleviate the traditional economic slowdown that occurs in the region during those months. “ I m p o r t a n t l y, w i t h o u t a genuine deterrent such as the Malaysia Arrangement to prevent dangerous boat journeys to Australia, the Scherger facility also will need to play a

Western Cape College P-12 students set balloons free following the Sorry Day Ceremony held on May 25.
THE grounds of Western Cape College were awash with the colours of the Australian flags as balloons were symbolically set free after the Sorry Day Ceremony held on Friday, May 25. The ceremony was organised and hosted by the students of the Year 11/12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies class. The students acknowledged Sorry Day (May 26), the day which commemorates the anniversary of the handing down
in 1997 of the Bringing Them Home Report into the Stolen Generations. The ceremony also launched Reconciliation Week which started on May 27, the anniversary of the 1967 referendum which was the first time that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were counted in the census, and ended on June 3, Mabo Day. This year is the 20th anniversary of the 1992 High Court decision in the case fought by
Eddie Mabo, which recognised the existence in Australia of native title rights. After the short ceremony in the WISH building, all P-12 students were asked to gather on the oval and the balloons were set free while the Sorry song was playing, which included the words of the 2008 Apology by Kevin Rudd. The balloons symbolised all the people of Australia, with our different cultures coming together in a spirit of reconciliation.

Travellers can help keep Cape York weed-free CAPE York adventurers can play an important role in keeping this iconic northern wilderness free of invasive weeds. Biosecurity Queensland is calling on travellers to ‘cleandown’ in an effort to stop weed seed spread of established species and prevent new weeds from getting a foothold in the Cape. Biosecurity officer Rob Cobon said vehicle hygiene was an important first step for travellers bound for the region. “The Peninsula Development Road in particular is a potential pathway for the humanassisted spread of weeds to and from the Cape,” Mr Cobon said. “Owners and operators of commercial and personal vehicles, trailers, boats and equipment should regularly clean them inside and out. “Cleandown facilities are available at Lakeland and other locations throughout the region, and should be used when travelling north and south. “Weed seeds cling to clothing, so travellers should take the time to keep them clean too. “As an extra precaution, we recommend that vehicles remain on formed roads to avoid the possible spread of weeds into the wilderness.” Mr Cobon said all visitors had a stake in keeping the Cape free from invasive weeds and weed-busting practices should be second nature to travellers.

“For example, Giant sensitive tree, otherwise known as Mimosa pigra, is present in the Northern Territory and represents a high risk of potential spread on boats, vehicles or trailers through the Gulf and into the Cape by anglers and off-road enthusiasts,” he said. “If giant sensitive tree was to take hold in the Cape, good barra fishing spots like the Normanby River could be decimated. “Travellers to the Cape are welcome to break their journey and learn more about invasive weeds at Biosecurity Queensland’s Coen Information and Inspection Centre. “The centre has an informative display, detailed brochures and fact sheets and friendly staff to provide advice on biosecurity practices and what to keep an eye out for while enjoying the region’s attractions.” For more information and a list of cleandown facility locations visit www.biosecurity.qld. gov.au or call 13 25 23.

THREE Catholic Education representatives will be in Weipa next week to consult the local community about a possible new primary school. Cairns CES deputy executive director Br Paul Hough, who will lead the visit, said the aim was to talk to as many people as possible about a possible Prep to Year 6 school that could open in 2015. “We have received a lot of encouragement from the local community already about a new school so this visit is designed to test the depth of that support and commitment, he said. Br Paul said Catholic Education would have a display stand at the shopping centre on Thursday and Friday, June 14 and 15, from 10am to 4pm, and there will be an insert and questionnaire in next week’s Western Cape Bulletin. “We invite the local community to come along and have a chat, particularly families interested in enrolling their children at a new school. He said the CES team, which included assistant executive director school development, Tim Devlin, and manager executive services, Andrew McKenzie, would also try and schedule key meetings over the four days. “We would like to meet with the local Catholic community, representatives of other faith communities, the Weipa Town Authority, Rio Tinto, Education Queensland and representa-

tives of the Napranum community, he said. Br Paul said the visit and consultation would address a number of challenges facing a new school. “In addition to the likely size of the school, and its financial viability, we also have to look at the suitability of our site in Boundary Road (adjoining the Catholic Church) and our need to provide or subsidise teacher accommodation. “These are all things we can explore further, he said. “But above all we need to have a sense that we would be a welcome new provider of primary education in the Weipa and Napranum communities. Br Paul said the results of the consultation would be presented to the Diocesan Board of Governance for Education and Bishop James Foley.
Your opportunity to comment Catholic Education Services for the Diocese of Cairns will have representatives in Weipa from 13 to 16 June to consult the local community on support for a new primary school.

The brochure and questionnaire can also be accessed on the website www.cns.catholic.edu.au Catholic Education will have an information stand at the shopping centre next Thursday and Friday, June 14 and 15 from 10am to 4pm. EVEN though you may be a very competitive guy or girl, one thing you should not do is wolf down your food as fast as you can, just because you can. For most of us, it requires probably a lot more willpower to chew properly and slow down the whole process of eating. So if you still want to be competitive try to be the slowest eater around. Why would you want to become a slow eater? The digestion of food starts in your mouth. It is all well planned by nature - there are enzymes in your saliva that break down your food while you are still chewing, breaking down the food into little pieces which will then be digested further on as the food travels through your system. The longer you chew the easier it will be on your whole digestion system to extract essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals from your food. This will increase your overall wellbeing and health. Secondly, while you are chewing away, the brain is getting the information that you are actually satisfying your hunger and food is coming in. This process may take up to 20 - 40 minutes and therefore, if you can make your meal last for that long, you will feel more satisfied and still eat less. Such an easy to follow weight loss tip and health tip - just eat healthy, and chew more than you ever have before. The number of times you need to chew really depends on the type

Other helpful tips which can help your digestion and the metabolising of food are: • Try not to have any distractions, like reading a newspaper, driving, watching TV or writing an email at the same time. Its nice to have a break; • Don’t drink 20 minutes before and after a meal to help your saliva, and other digestive juices break down the food without being “watered down”; • Increase good bacteria in your gut buy eating fermented foods such as sauerkraut, or probiotics in your yoghurt. of food you consume. Soft fruits and vegetables will break down more easily than chicken or steak, so you will need to make sure you chew your food as thoroughly as possible. According to the experts at Ohio State University, you should chew softer foods five to 10 times, and harder foods up to 30 times before swallowing. (Source: netwellnes. org).
LAST week we heard of a teacher of the Law who genuinely asked Jesus which commandment was the most important of all. The Lord Jesus actually gave two answers and the first commandment he quoted that people must love the Lord God with all their heart, soul, and strength. He then added another commandment that quoted Leviticus Ch 19 v 18 which stated that people must love their neighbour as much as themselves. Let’s look at the words that lead up to and follow this command. “Do not bear a grudge against anyone, but
By Rev. Michael Connolly
settle your differences with him, so that you will not commit a sin because of him. Do not take revenge on anyone or continue to hate him, but love your neighbour as you love yourself.” Those last four words, “as you love yourself” are very important because, when we think about it, how is it possible to reach within ourselves to forgive when many of us lack self-esteem? I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we who do not lack selfesteem and are happy with ourselves, tend to forgive easily. Those of us who lack this are quick to bite
back, look for revenge, and usually have a wall of anger and self-pity to keep ourselves company. Over time, it can be company that people do not want to let go of, as they have become comfortable with it. If we are Christians and in this crowd, we should ask the Lord forgiveness for clinging to them, and to help us to grow in self-esteem, because, after all, we are all his priests. Our duty is to keep our “temple” clean, because that is where the Holy Spirit dwells. (Rev Ch 1 v 5-6; 1Cor 3: 16) The Lord is our strength. – Rev Michael Connolly

Bowlies photography competition YOU may have noticed the wall that separates the restaurant from the dance floor in the Weipa Bowls Club is pretty bare, a blank canvas, you could say. The club is asking for help from local budding photographers to brighten up the wall by providing iconic photographs, one to be mounted on each side of the dividing wall. Weipa Bowls Club general manager Nick Prus said he wanted to decorate the wall with something that everyone will identify with Weipa. “What we would like is a photograph of a crocodile on the restaurant side of the wall, and a beautiful Weipa sunrise or sunset on the dance floor side, Mr Prus said. “We have contacted a company who can reproduce one large photo on each side of the wall so it is going to look pretty spectacular. Photographers are asked to email their high resolution photographs to weipabowlsclub@bigpond.com with “photography competition in the subject line, or burn the images onto a CD and drop it into the club. Not only will the winning photographs be displayed in a very impressive fashion, their are two $250 Weipa Bowl Club restaurant vouchers offered as incentive to the winning photographer(s) – one voucher for each shot chosen. So start clicking away, and send your photographs in before June 30 for a chance to have your shot immortalised.

Even though the weather is cooler at the moment pet owners need to remain vigilant against eas. I thought the pesky little critters died off in the colder weather but apparently this is not the case. In fact, all those nice warm blankets and rugs that are appearing around our human’s homes at the moment are ideal for eas to breed in. It’s not always pleasant, but a monthly flea wash (or other flea treatment) is still a must, as is having your bedding washed weekly.

ADVERTORIAL
Are you ready to “SKINNY UP ? With the recent nationwide successes (and many slimmer and healthier Cairns locals!) using the Homeopathic HCG fat loss program, a complete metabolic program incorporating this method has been developed by a registered G.P. in collaboration with natural therapists. This nutritionally balanced program aimed at weight management and optimal health is removing stubborn body fat between 10 and 20cm off everywhere equating to between 5 and 15 kilos in just 3weeks along with significant reductions in blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugars. "Ian went for a blood test after doing the HCG drops last time, and the doctor nearly fell off his chair! All his results were completely normal. His blood sugar was down from 6.5 to 2 (6.5 is borderline diabetic..) and his cholesterol was around 2 or 3, where it used to be around 5 or 6. He's off all his medication! Such an amazing result." (Ian lost 15 kgs in 4 weeks). "I had finished my second round of HCG drops and follow-up maintainance, this round was just 21 days, after my first 40 days on drops and the result is a 21 kg loss, four dress sizes down, new outlook at life and lots of energy and unrestricted movement. It makes me aware of all the foods I eat and every day choices do truly matter." This is just some of the feedback I am getting including no cravings, no hunger, no tiredness, no loss of body muscle or other nutritional deficiencies and a permanent reprogramming of your appetite and final body weight and composition. How does it get any better than that? For more information or appointments in Weipa, please contact; Dione Dangelico Natural Therapist 0408 603 973 dione.dangelico@bigpond.com

IN the Australian Army there is a tactic known as “the tunnel of love and is often used as the first part of “break contact drills for small reconnaissance and Special Forces patrols when encountering larger enemy forces. This tactic was designed with human psychology in mind. It begins with an infantry patrol making contact with a larger force of enemy. Once the command “break contact is called, the soldiers then begin, or continue, to use suppressing fire to delay the enemy’s attack and advance. Depending on the direction when breaking contact, the first soldier in contact peels backward and runs through the gap left by the others during the suppression. The process then continues with each soldier out front peeling back into the “tunnel whilst his mates suppress the enemy with large volumes of fire. Each soldier then moves approx 10 metres to the rear and waits for the next one to move through until successfully breaking contact. The many moving parts of the tactic give the impression of increasing numbers of infantry joining the battle. Mixed with the
large volume of fire it is difficult for the enemy force to mount a charge. The use of force is central to the basic function of the soldier. Shooting underpins the application of force and is fundamental to success in battle. Therefore it is essential that all members of Bravo Coy seek and obtain mastery of their weapon. A high standard of individual shooting is a key goal for the company. It is only after its achievement that we can confidently operate our weapons and weapon systems as part of an effective, lethal and cohesive team. Shooting is the foundation skill for the infantryman. Lethal, accurate and timely fire is the hallmark of the professional infantryman. One of these skills is being able to ‘group’ a series of five shots fired at 100m. The smaller the group, the better the firer. Soldiers have to be able to concentrate on sighting at the same ‘point of aim’ for each shot, maintain the correct position when firing, control their breathing and utilise the same trigger pressure across all shots. It’s not that easy and takes a lot of practice to get good at.

health and well being A FUN and informative Womens Health Day was held at Napranum Primary Health Care Clinic on Tuesday, May 29. Staff from Queensland Health and Apunipima were on hand to promote health and wellbeing, educate on a variety of women’s health topics, and provide a comprehensive and holistic health check for all women. More than 50 women attended the day, with 35 health checks completed. All women who attended the day received a lovely spot prize and all were in the draw to win one of four Nano Ipods. All prizes for the day were kindly donated by staff at
Queensland Health and Apunipima. One of the highlights of the day was the “My Kai Kai Rules” cooking class where women cooked a healthy lunch, which was sponsored by CEA. Feedback from the day has been overwhelmingly positive with many asking for more health days to be held. As a result of this positive response, plans are underway for a Breastscreening Womens Health Expo and a Men’s Health Day later in the year. If you missed the day but would like to have a health check completed please contact staff at the Napranum Primary Health Care Clinic on 4069 7459.

CROSSWORD No. 101
SUDOKU No. 101
Your Lucky
ARIES (March 21st - April 20th)
You will have a strong urge to get away from your daily routine. Your mind may be on a recent trip rather than on your work. It will be very tempting to live with your head in the clouds. Romance. Don’t allow other people to boss you around - you will have to decide what is best for you. Although others may want to control you, it is important to assert yourself.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st)
Dreaming about inheriting a large sum of money will not help your financial situation. You need to take some more practical measures to cut down on your expenses. Romance. You may be surprised to find out who has suddenly taken an interest in you. However, don’t push too hard as they may be shy about revealing themselves.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)
FOR KIDS
You may not realise how different your standards are from those of a friend. Don’t be too hard on this person. Acceptance will pay off much more than a judgemental attitude. Romance. This will be a good time for romance, provided you are prepared to be bold and take the initiative.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd)
Don’t allow yourself to be criticised by people who don’t know any better themselves. A colleague who has much less experience than you may try to boss you around. You may need to confront this person privately. Romance. A dream which you had last night will involve someone very close to you. Your relationship with this person will soon change in unexpected ways.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd)
Don’t allow anyone to throw you off course. They won’t understand your needs as well as you do yourself. Look inward and discover your true motives: they may surprise even you. Romance. If you are uncertain about which way to proceed, it is important that you ask the advice of people whom you trust and respect.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)
FINDWORD No. 101 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
You will be in a very practical mood this week, and it will be a while before you give yourself a chance to relax. Take advantage of your increased activity while it lasts. Romance. A soothing dream will help to calm you from a stressful situation. Do not trouble yourself about finding the meaning of this dream: the feeling it leaves is more important.
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd)
This will be a very rewarding time, both for you and your partner. You will experience success in a previously unsuccessful endeavour. Romance. Your partner will be more interested in romance than you are this week. One of you will have to compromise. Take your partner’s words at face value: you may be doing yourself a disservice by reading too much into them.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)
For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au
MUDDY RIVER
A knee-jerk reaction to a situation may not be appropriate. Take a deep breath and give the matter some thought before you jump in. Romance. This is not a good time to try to make any changes in your relationship. Your partner may be seeking a sign of affection from you.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st)
You may need to adjust fairly quickly to changes coming into your life. If you wait, you will find that you have been overtaken by events. Act decisively and strike while the iron is hot. Romance. Your relationship will benefit from a trusted friend’s advice. You need a new perspective on the situation.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th)
Don’t just accept other people’s decisions. You need to have your own say in things. Others will value your input in an important decision. Romance. Instead of trying to change your partner, you should do your best to accept them just as they are. A loving gesture will be very appreciated this week.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
QUOTE OF THE DAY The Secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age. – Lucille Ball
SOLUTIONS No. 101
Don’t let other people make you feel guilty because you cannot influence events in the way they would like. Romance. This will be an excellent week for romance. You will have to take it easy at first but don’t worry, things will heat up quickly enough!
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th)
You will be surprised what you can achieve if you are prepared to take a risk. You may need some extra courage, however as others may be surprised to see you in a new light. Romance. Someone close to you may soon be getting married. Your feelings may be a little ambivalent. You may know more about recent events than you would like.

THERE were winners all over the shop on Saturday, May 26 at the Weipa International Raceway. The fans walked away entertained and with full bellies, and as usual the racing was frenetic, exhilarating and ďŹ rst class. Light sea breezes accompanied a star-filled sky, as the rookies hit the track ďŹ rst, with Tallis Mowles and Elijah Rye making their long awaited debut, joining regulars Benn Batterham and Tristan Hyytinen. These boys did a fantastic job, with Tristan starring on the night with four wins. A great effort Tristan, and remember to keep hitting your dad up about pimping your ride. The next group was the juniors. Rachel Brooker again showed a clean pair of heels in all four races to sit at the top of the leader board. Seth Smith was also solid with four second placings, and the other minors were shared by Brandon Waretini and Jasmin Hyytinen. Wi t h t h e t r a c k d r y i n g quickly, the KT mediums were next out with their first heat being ‘sick as bro’. The tussle between the top three drivers Ben West, Anthony Hoad and Dan Metcalfe was fantastic, and I should know, because I was behind them the whole way. And it didn’t stop there as for the rest of the night, all of their races were close ďŹ nishes and in the end, it was the master himself, Ben West, who walked away with four wins. Believe me, Westy is one of the best drivers running around at the moment and in July when he travels to the Northern Territory, he will surprise a few people. The 125s turned out with three karts on the night, and Maddie Waretini stepped up from last year being in the juniors to race a 125 kart. The night was Tony Smith’s, who scored three wins and a second; the other winner on the night being Howard Waretini. An excellent effort with all three karts ďŹ nishing each race on the night. The last group to hit the track was the KT heavies. Troy Batterham nearly served up a clean plate, if only it wasn’t for an “offâ€? in the first turn of the ďŹ rst heat while leading comfortably. Despite their physical appearances these boys race just as hard and fast as their lighter counterparts and the racing is always close and exciting. A big mention goes to Phil Rye with the stack of the night. After losing control in the ďŹ rst turn of the last heat in the KT mediums and crashing hard into the tyres, Phil managed a smoke screen worthy of David

CopperďŹ eld. Great effort Phil. If you weren’t at the track, you missed the launch of a brand new concept introduced by the Weipa Dirt Kart Club called “a star in a reasonablypriced kartâ€?. The Weipa Dirt Kart Club are putting the challenge out to all businesses in Weipa to supply a company representative to come out on race night, and turn some laps in a dirt kart at half time, to see if they have what it takes. This is Weipa’s version of
Top Gear’s “stars challenge, with times recorded, and at the end of the year a prize given to the winner. It’s a great opportunity for your company to see what dirt karting is all about and possibly bag-out a work mate. Our first star was Darren Ahmat from Enzed who turned a best lap of 24.932 seconds, which is pretty damn good. If your company is interested in taking part call Ben West on 0458 856 211 and stop big-noting yourself, and start
getting a piece of the town business challenge action. We have a break now, with our next meeting being the Blue Ribbon Anniversary meeting on June 22 and 23, and on June 30 the last round of the Enzed hose Doctor Top End Dirt Kart Series will be held. We will be at the Weipa Fishing Classic this weekend so come and have a look at the dirt karts. Over and out from Mowlesy at race headquarters, just remember keep living the dream, if not buy a dirt kart instead. – Derek

WEIPA Junior Soccer farewelled the Connell family who attended their last Weipa game this week. Lachlan and Daniel have been enthusiastic and fair players in Tykes, and now Teens, and this is their third season of soccer. Andrew could be spotted every Saturday lugging nets around the paddock, and has made an enormous contribution to the strategic and weekly running of the games in his role as vice president since February 2011. Donna has shown tireless support in the canteen during sign-up and weekly games. Thank you, and good luck as you enjoy your new challenges in Charleville. Thank you to the referees and parent helpers who make the games possible with their support and enthusiasm. Squirt parents – your help with the teams as game leaders is very much appreciated and is needed to run games the young kids can truly enjoy. Coaching for Teens, Titans and Senior Titans is on Mondays at 5pm. Coaching for Squirts and Tykes is Wednesdays 3.15 pm. It is important that all players arrive 20 minutes before the start of their game to allow for full teams to be played. Squirts Gold & Green V Green & Navy A sea of gold took
to the field in the “Gold Challenge”. Tai showed excellent skills in scoring all six goals for the Navy Stripes. Lincoln scored three goals for the Green Stripes with Darius backing up for two. A last minute goal by Tai saw Navy Stripes victorious by one goal. Navy Stripes 6 Green Stripes 5 Tykes Green v Blue Riley scored an attacking first goal for the Green team. Sean impressed everyone, scoring for Blue. A very even game with attack and defence from both teams, with Gary scoring again for Green before half time. After half time more challenging by both sides for the ball and still no score, but then Riley slotted one in for Green. Sean impressed again scoring for Blue. Good game played by both teams. Green 3 Blue 2 Tykes Red V Gold Red team had a spirited and tough match in a game dominated by the Gold team. Gold was off to a blistering start with a succession of quick goals, and star player Jaylen scored 9 goals during the game. Red team did well facing the Gold barrage. Kieran scored two goals for Gold including a long range torpedo which hit the mark, and Sam slotted in a brilliant goal for Gold. Gold 14 Red 0 Teens Green V Blue Green team played
THIS week was the last opportunity for Weipa Squash Club A and B Grade teams to solidify their chances of making it into the semi-finals. Many players forfeited, and this may have been partly due to two teams not making the semi-finals. In A Grade, Team Stubby blitzed the matches against Team Tallie with A1 Owen Witt, after losing the first ‘long’ game to Ross Hyytinen, powering on to win the next three games (3-1). A2 Jeff Berry played a tough game against Glen Egan, with the first game being forced to ‘long’, however Glen easily won the third game (3-1). A4 Ben Tantau fought an evenly matched game against Amanda McKenzie, and after losing the first game, he went on to win the next two. Amanda won the fourth game, and after forcing the fifth to a ‘long’ game, Ben took the match (3-2). Team Schooner won their two matches against Team Yard Glass. A1 Luke Dorsett played Nick Brookes (as sub for Aaron Schleich), and although Nick won one of the games, Luke won the match (3-1). A2 Grant Foster played Nick Brookes, he won all three games, however Nick forced the middle game to ‘long’ (3-0). Team Pot and Team Pint were evenly matched when two of the veteran players A1 Dave Edward and Tom Murray showed us their finesse, but it was Dave’s night (3-0). A2 Scott McCahon unfortunately lost by forfeit to Rod Bielby; A3 Shane Spagnol played an unpredictable game against Laurie Raleigh, with Laurie winning the first two, then Shane the next two, but Laurie claimed the last win (2-3). Wayne (as sub for A4 Shay Alley) went down in three games to Jimmy Baira (0-3). Only a little over half of the B Grade players participated in the final games of the second round. Team Pina Colada’s B1 Josh Milne defeated Team Blue Lagoon’s Justin Hyytinen in four 9-point games, despite Justin winning the first ‘long’ game (3-1). B2 Michael Cridland won in three games against Stephen Borg (3-0), and despite losing the first game with no score, B4 Patrick Lightart convincingly won the next three against opponent Emma Thomas (3-1). B5 Samantha O’Neill lost her three games against Bianca Borg (0-3). Of the six matches played between Team Martini and Team Margarita, the scores were even at 10 games each, commencing with B1 Cole Dalton defeating Adam Blocksidge in three games (3-0). Despite B2 Randall O’Neill warming up progressively as he played, Ben Smith was the victor (0-3), and B3 Sally Parr went down in three to Donna O’Neill (0-3). B5 Omer Saeed easily defeated Melissa Ghee in three games, however Melissa was able to claim one game (3-1). B6 Brooke Gwynne thrashed Elisa Moody (3-0), and Yours Squashfully let the team down by only winning one game against her formidable opponent, B7 Kylie Carr (1-3). Team Mojito did not let Team Long Island Iced Tea muddle their lime when B1 Adam Woodhouse played like a Trojan against Steve Moore, conceding only one game to Steve (3-1). B2 Ben Braun alternated wins against Chris Bienvenu with Ben coming out on top (3-2), and B4 Fiona Newsome won with all 9s against Nicole Dearling’s all 7s (3-0). Keeping up the family name B5 Ian Newsome, despite losing his first game, went on the win his match against Tim Manning (3-1). By the time this article goes to print, both grades will have played their first night of semi-finals. Best of luck to all players.
strongly with one player even putting their body on the line to save goals. Good defence and attack from both sides with all players trying really hard. Green 9 Blue 1 Teens Gold V Red Four goals kicked by Sammy in the first few minutes saw the Gold team take an impressive lead. Red did not let that dampen their spirits, working well as a team with some great passes and dribbles down the field. This determination eventually lead to an impressive goal scored by Travis, which was backed up shortly after with another, and then another. Half time kick-off saw Travis from Red boot an awesome goal from the whistle, followed shortly after with another, and then another. The final score saw Gold win 14 to Red’s 6. Titans Gold V Green A good turn-out with five-a-side this week resulting in a wellmatched game. One spectator rated this as the best game Titans have played this year. The game included good ball skills, a challenging scuffle between the teams for the ball, and good passing between team mates. Green 12 Gold 7 Senior Titans Players showed up with enthusiasm and enjoyed a game well played by all. Volunteers to Yours squashfully, Ruth Harris write-up match needed. Storm stay strong during representative season WHEN State of Origin is in full swing it is known as the “silly season” and it has been very interesting to see how the clubs have been performing during the representative games this year. Melbourne Storm has been outstanding, and full credit to the club, as they just keep producing performances the other NRL teams just envy. The Tigers, Bulldogs and Rabbitohs have gone to another level recently and the race is on for the final eight as the season moves into the qualifying rounds. Unfortunately, the Cowboys have been inconsistent, but I do know they are working extremely hard, and will be back in the winner’s circle sooner than later. Round 13 was once again another interesting week of footy. The Titans somehow overcame the mighty Cowboys, which really surprised me as the Titans are very boring to watch.
The Sea Eagles showed their strength with a powering win over the toothless Dragons. Benji Marshall produced another masterful display for the Tigers and the Raiders were just simply outclassed. The Bulldogs and the Rabbits played in a thriller with the Doggies winning in the final stages. On Sunday, the Broncos and the Knights battled it out and defence wasn’t on the shopping list this week as the Broncos ran out winners 50-24. The mighty Storm overpowered a much-improved Warriors in a great game in the cold New Zealand weather. The Northern Pride came up against a very determined Ipswich Jets side on the weekend and were unfortunately beaten 38-14. It was interesting to see NSW have made only two changes to their side for next week’s Origin game, and it’s about time. Obviously they are following in Queensland’s footsteps and have some loyalty.
Scotty’s AFL round-up I haven’t seen any of the Tiges v So the year rolls on...the dry season kicks in, and the upsets are ruling Saints game yet but I will look it up and get up to speed with what must have the day in the footy. I love the upsets, and the joy it been a cracker. Like I said last week, brings to the long-suffering supporters look out. Dastardly Fouls. Not happy Jan. The Roos are in strife and the calls I don’t know what she got up to but on our return the chooks have gone will start to come for Brad Scott to broody and I reckon we’ll be finding shape up or ship out. I still can’t work out if the Crows little nuggets of surprise for weeks are that good, or the Dockers are that to come. Our weekend spent down at the bad. A team that has Zac Dawson at Archer was all worth it though, great one end and Jack Anthony at the other weather, great company and a great would struggle to hold its own against spot. The big new prop Tim Grant is certainly a player of the future and I think the Maroons will have to be on their game to stop the big unit. The mighty Maroons most likely will not make any changes and we should once again win another series.

ROUND 11 – Fri, JUNE 8 - Mon, JUNE 11 FRI, JUNE 8 Carlton v Geelong @ Etihad Stadium SAT, JUNE 9 Richmond v Fremantle @ MCG Gold Coast v St Kilda @ Metricon Stadium Essendon v Sydney @ Etihad Stadium SUN, June 10 Port Adelaide v Hawthorn @ AAMI Stadium MON, June 11 Melbourne v Collingwood @ MCG BYE Adelaide, Brisbane, GWS, North Melbourne, West Coast and Western Bulldogs the big winners from the weekend in a shocker for the tipsters. The emotion in the Demons camp was good to see and gives some hope to all followers of footy that things are okay. It’s easy to forget that the Bombers have struggled in recent years, and I don’t feel the usual satisfaction at seeing the ladder leader toppled. The Eagles too copped the shock over the Lions. The longest road trip in football might have something to do with it. There’s been a fair bit of interest in the free agency factor lately and it will be interesting to see if any big name players jump ship. The smart money is on the mid-range players taking advantage and the big names will stay put. It might not be such a big change after all. The Cats and Blue Baggers have a season defining date on Friday night at Etihad. The loser of this has an uphill battle, while the winner sets up within a game of top spot. I think the Blues
will out-pace the Cats. It’s so tight this year that it wont be decided until the last round. The Dockers are up against a hiding to nothing taking on the Tigers at the G. The Army will be out for a massacre, and the Tiges will be hard to stop. The Bombers and Swans have an interesting date on Saturday night, but I think the boys from Windy Hill will bounce back. I’ll be surprised if the Power can stop the Buddy show at AAMI and the Dees will come back to Earth with a thud at the hands of the Pies on Sunday. A few teams have the bye this week and it keeps us on our toes with the tips. Get down to the oval on Sunday morning at 10am for a bit of Auskick action. It’s been a good couple of weeks for those that have come down so get amongst it. See you next week. Scotty

Calling all junior fishers THIS week has been a bit of a blur for me and the days have gone so fast, with very few reports coming in from the boys going outside. The wind has been blowing daily, and hasn’t let up since my arrival, so hopefully it will back off for the Weipa Fishing Classic which is coming up next weekend. I finally got to have a fish at the Mission River bridge with Rui, and he lost a small Barra on a Mangrove Studio Mahi Pen surface lure, so we went back the next morning and found small Queenfish hitting the bait around the pylons. I finally hooked up on a legal Barra on a Daiwa TD minnow, only to have it jump off at my feet. The boats that launched from the bridge were coming back with mixed results, mainly Blue Salmon, but a few King Salmon and Barra thrown into the mix to keep it interesting. There are plenty of mud crabs around as well, but they are scattered all over the river systems and at times can be annoying to the shore-bound bait fisherman, attacking the baits meant for larger quarry. On Red Beach the bait fisherman have been getting Blue Salmon and the odd King Salmon.
Diamond Jubilee Queenfish Major Jamie Heron landed this nice Queenfish, but threw it back, in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Further afield the Pennefather and Wenlock River systems have been going very well for Jacks and Barra. Up in the freshwater section of the Wenlock there have been any amount of Saratoga and small Barra to keep the lure tossers happy. Out on the flats, if you find the bait you will find the fish, but be careful you don’t get stranded. Evans Landing wharf has seen some torrid tussles after dark, with Jews, GTs and Sharks stretching arms and
breaking rods, but very few fish landed. On a lighter note a couple of things happened this week that I will share with you... A customer says to his mate, “gee this lure is getting the hits but I can’t stay connected to them. So his mate says show us the lure- it might work better if you remove the hook protectors. Another customer travels all the way from Forster in Victoria, goes to start his boat, and then realises that his fuel line is in the garage in Victoria.
We will be running a junior fishing competition for under 16s. Just send us a photo of your captures and a winner will be decided and announced the following month. So come on, send your photos in for judging. Email photos to: weipabaitandtackle@bigpond.com Late report to come into the shop is that there are still big Tuskies on the southern reefs, with some good mackerel as well. So,’til my next report...tight lines. Cheers, China
