True blue celebrations at the lakes HUNDREDS of locals and visitors gathered at the newly-completed Lake Patricia recreation area on Thursday morning to celebrate Australia Day Weipa-style. For the more energetic Aussies the morning kicked off at 7am with a fun run/walk around Lake Patricia, organised by Weipa Hash House Harriers. The run was not without controversy,
as the first group of participants to cross the finish line owed their incredibly fast times to a wrong turn, which shortened their course considerably. First male across the line (after completing the entire circuit) was Ethan Kruckow, Talia Barber took the honours for the women and Jack Backo was the first under 14 contestant to complete the run. They love to have the tourists visit every year, They welcome them with open arms, and sometimes share their beer. Mining is the drawcard to bring most people to town, There’s also all the businesses who try not to let them down. Nearly 22 years now the town has been my home, I have my sons and grandaughters here so I never feel alone. But what I want to tell you is how lucky we all are To live in such a beautiful place accessible by sea, air and car. You see, if you are really in a jam I know that lots of locals here would come and give a hand. We live in isolation, sometimes for six months of the year, But never have I seen the town run out of beer. We have some beautiful camping spots and fishing ones as well, And I can guarantee you some have good stories to tell. So, if you’re ever feeling down and need to take a break Go and take a barbecue and sit beside our lake. On weekends 20 years ago the lake was the place to be, Raft races, cricket games and barbecues is all that you could see. So just incase you forget sometimes and whinge about our town, Remember how special life is and take time to look around. We’re famous for our fishing comp and bull ride every year, And people come from all around, spreading all their cheer. So if you think that you might like to call our town your own Come and move up to the Gulf and find yourself at home.
Racing through the mud we’re sure to get bogged, But we’ve got 4WD so we get unclogged. There’s no better place to be, It’s where I call home, It’s where I feel free.

What are we doing here at the lake? Our safety is at risk, for God’s sake! Someone said their dog nearly got took, That’s how we roll in Weipa, you sook. We come here every year, We know they’re in there, but we just jeer. We’re made of tough stuff, here in the Cape, If you don’t like it, don’t stand there and gape.
We better hurry up and pack So we can drive the Telegraph Track Tonnes of anthills as we drive Can’t wait to get to the tip for a snorkel and a dive. There’s no better place to be, It’s where I call home, It’s where I feel free.

Contact Weipa TAFE on 4069 9013 today. Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service erected the “recent crocodile sighting sign at the mouth of Trunding Creek last week following the report of a close encounter on Wednesday afternoon.
A READER contacted the Western Cape Bulletin last Wednesday afternoon following a close encounter of the crocodile kind at the mouth of Trunding Creek in Weipa. The reader had been on the edge of the creek with two dogs when a receding wave revealed what appeared to be a very large croc only metres away. Last week’s sighting follows an incident on the other side of the same creek in late December, when a large crocodile lunged at two local men and their children who were sitting on quad bikes at what they thought was a safe distance from the creek.
A Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service (QPWS) ranger conducted a survey in the area following Wednesday’s sighting however to date the size of the animal has not been confirmed. Following the erection of a “recent crocodile sighting sign, QPWS issued the following statement “The area around Trunding Creek and the beach area going along in front of the camping grounds is potentially a dangerous area for public safety. “Extreme care should be taken at all times and nobody should go near the water’s edge or enter the water at any time.

LOCAL government elections will now move from March 31to Saturday, April 28, 2012 after Queensland Premier Anna Bligh called the State election for March 24 last Wednesday. Moving the council poll has angered the Local Government Association, which says Ms Bligh’s decision is more about political convenience than good government. The decision on the timing for the election decision comes after the flood inquiry asked for additional time to deliver its final report, shifting this date from February 24 to March 16. Ms Bligh said she was committed to ensuring Queenslanders had the truth from the flood inquiry before they voted at either election. She told reporters that March 24 was the closest Saturday to the anniversary of the 2009 election and she was not prepared to extend her own term. “I intend to call the 2012 State election for Saturday, March 24 giving the public time to consider the findings of the inquiry, she said. She said voters should not be asked to vote before the final report, because it could contain adverse findings that could alter the way people cast their ballots. Local Government Association President Paul Bell said Ms Bligh had gone back on several assurances that she would not shift the date of local council elections from
March 31 to suit her own political purposes. He said there was no good reason for the Premier to go back on her word simply because the Floods Commission of Inquiry needs more time to compile its final report. “If any poll needs to be delayed it should be the state election,’’ he said. Cr Bell said it was deeply disappointing that local councils will be disrupted due to questions over evidence before the inquiry that involved state agencies rather than councils. “The local government sector is effectively paying for the mistakes of others,’’ he said. “There has been no suggestion in our extensive consultations with the commission of inquiry that individual councils or councillors will be the subject of adverse findings. Weipa Town Authority (WTA) Chairperson, Carrie Gay also expressed her disappointment in the change of date for local elections. “It is disappointing for prospective candidates to be made to wait, and for those of us who are not running again frustrating, as many had plans after council life, Mrs Gay said. “However the members of WTA, along with the staff, will do our best to keep the town running smoothly until April 28. Dates for local government candidate nomination will confirmed this week and announced in the next edition of the Western Cape Bulletin.

Emergency heritage listing lodged THE Wilderness Society (TWS) has sought emergency National Heritage listing for four areas on Cape York Peninsula it believes are under serious threat from mining proposals. TWS Northern Australia campaigner Gavan McFadzean wrote to Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke last week requesting urgent intervention to ensure that high natural and cultural values are not destroyed while community consultation for these listings is underway. Section 324JL – 324JQ of the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 provides Minister Burke with emergency listing powers, if he is persuaded the areas are worthy of National Heritage status and are under significant and imminent threat. The areas surrounding Rio Tinto’s South of Embley project, and Cape Alumina’s Bauxite Hills and Pisolite Hills projects are included in the TWS list of areas identified as most at risk. “The mining boom is driving an outbreak of new mining proposals on Cape York Peninsula for coal, bauxite, kaolin and mineral sands, Mr McFadzean said. “There are six new mines now proposed for Cape York Peninsula. Each requires a new port and combined would wipe out 45,000 hectares of forest and native grassland. “These mines will bring destructive land clearing, water extraction, pollution, dams, dredging, vast road networks and other industrial infrastructure to pristine and remote locations in

A spokesperson for Rio Tinto Alcan said that so far, TWS had declined offers to discuss the South of Embley Project. “Rio Tinto has been operating in the Western Cape for more than 40 years, and respect for the environment is central to our approach. “We are committed to a thorough and transparent environmental impact assessment process for the South of Embley Project and we are happy to talk to anyone or any group who has an interest in our project, the spokesperson said.
Under the Project, Rio Tinto Alcan will extend bauxite mining on an existing mining lease south of its current operations near Weipa. “The Project would allow Rio Tinto Alcan to continue providing jobs and other economic development opportunities for the people of the Western Cape and Far North Queensland for generations to come. “We have 277 Indigenous employees at the Weipa operation, which represents more than 25 per cent of our workforce. The spokesperson said Rio Tinto would will continue to work with all interested stakeholders to ensure the project is delivered with the best possible environmental outcomes.

Staff at the Weipa Woolworths supermarket took on an Aussie flavour last Wednesday when they served up an in-store, true blue sausage sizzle. The barbecue lunch was a true community affair with funds raised going to Weipa Community Care Association. The good old Aussie banga in bread was available for a gold coin donation to WCCA and the Weipa Woolworths store matched all funds raised, dollar for dollar. Pictured at the sausage sizzle are Woolworths staff members Andrew, Sam, Tammy and Sue with store manager Mark Parkes and assistant store manager Jenny Everest.

CAPS volunteers Lauren Nash and Kylie Walling with some of the tempting delights sold at last Wednesday’s successful fundraising bake sale.
MEMBERS of the local Cape Animal Projection Shelter (CAPS) held a very successful bake sale last Wednesday. CAPS volunteer Kylie Walling said the response to the sale was fantastic. “We couldn’t believe how quickly we sold all our goodies, Kylie said. “It’s so nice to see the community support for our organisation. “Elise Lett (CAPS fundraising co-ordinator) put a lot of hard work into baking all the cakes, lamingtons and slices, and Kim Menges of Weipa Cakes and Delectables made the Choc Tai cup cakes and coffee cupcakes with chocolate spoons. “We couldn’t have had the sale without their effort and awesome cooking ability. CAPS is a non-profit organisation caring for homeless and unwanted dogs in the Weipa and surrounding areas. The primary aim of the shelter is to provide temporary refuge through volunteer foster carers, and eventually new homes for abandoned, abused, stray and unwanted
dogs, rehousing them back into society as healthy, desexed animals. CAPS also aim to develop community awareness and education regarding dog welfare. Relying on the generosity of the community to continue their work CAPS is always willing to accept a helping hand. “We urgently need foster carers, both short and long term, and CAPS take care of the food and medical requirements of the dogs in care, Kylie said. “The condition of these dogs can vary from healthy and vibrant to those that are in need of special care and attentional and their ages range from puppies to mature age. People unable to commit to longer term caring may be able to assist CAPS by fostering a dog for anything from a couple of days to a few weeks. CAPS also offer a dog walking and pet feeding service. If you would like to assist the CAPS organisation in any way contact Kylie Walling on 0457 195 266 for more information, obligation free.

Free mental health seminar for Weipa
Rain holds off for first Weipa market day THE threat of rain did not deter local craftspeople from setting up their stalls for the first monthly Weipa market last Saturday. Handmade candles which smell good enough to eat, stunning original jewellery, colourful clothing and timber creations were all on display and despite the gloomy weather plenty of people came to sample the wares.
Market stallholder Tracy Sekac said that although there were only four stalls for the first monthly markets she was expecting to see more people become involved. “There is currently no charge to hold a stall at the Weipa monthly markets so I hope more creative people out there take advantage of this great way to display and sell their creations,” Tracy said.
Tracy’s huge range of handmade scented candles attracted plenty of interest at Saturday’s markets.
Local artist Una displayed a collection of her handmade jewellery at the first monthly Weipa markets, held last Saturday.
Dawn brought a selection of her handmade jewellery from Mossman to the Weipa markets.
Michelle’s vibrant and original Cape Create Clothing and Design collection was a winner at the markets.
THE Australian College of Community Services (ACCS) in partnership with the Community Mental Health Branch of the Department of Communities will be presenting free, twoday Awareness, Skills and Knowledge (ASK) about Suicide and Mental Health workshops for the benefit of Weipa organisations in February. The two-day seminar aims to increase people’s awareness and knowledge of mental illness, distress and suicide, and develop skills to assist those who are at risk. Staff of public sector organisations including not-for-profit organisations, education institutes, health and aged care organisations and councils have the opportunity to attend this valuable training. Participants can learn a variety of skills that can be applied in dif-
ferent circumstances, explore how common experiences may affect people and how they can offer support. These skills cover the full spectrum of situations from early intervention and prevention to assisting in a crisis, helping them to feel more prepared, confident, ready, willing and able. Valued at nearly $300 per person, the two-day seminar is being offered free on February 22 and 23, from 9am to 4.30pm at the Albatross Bay Resort. To take advantage of this valuable professional training opportunity contact ACCS on 1300 833 328 or email info@ accs.qld.edu.au ACCS is a registered training organisation and charity based in Queensland and the formal education and training division of Mental Health Association Queensland (MHAQ).

No more mopping up Rio’s mess
YET again last Sunday, for the umpteenth time, I stood with 12cm of flood water running through my house, destroying my furniture, pouring into power points, When in Cairns choose from 3 great locations... ruining carpets and rugs. I stand amid the chaos and Rainbow Resort mumble the words “Rio bloody City Sheridan Comfort Inn Tinto”. Southside Quality Inn For three years I have begged, pleaded and dare I say, www.rainbowinn.com.au swore at different times, to get CENTRAL RESERVATIONS the drain in Tonkin Drive sorted ph: 4051 1022 info@rainbowinn.com.au out. I’ve had promises and more promises but to no avail. The sooner this bloody multinational creature is out of the towns affairs the better off we will all be. I am sure I do not have to mention just how bad the water pressure is to so many of the town’s residents. God help you folks down the far end of Nanum if your house catches fire. Just hope and pray it is not towards the end of the dry season. When Rio’s water supply system is actually running at capacity towards the end of the dry, the main valve for water supply for the town is turned down from 30-something turns when full-on to around four or five turns from full-off. If this is not done then the town dam runs out of water. That’s when you need to run around in the shower trying to catch the couple of drops that come out. Fat chance of getting pressure for a fire hose. The town struggles with just four million dollars per year in rates revenue. The town needs rates like I need oxygen. So now I am hearing very disturbing rumours that “you know who” is thinking of building a large single persons quarters in the not too distant future. Guess where? Where they will slurp up town water supplies, and use the town’s infrastructure, but surprise, surprise, the rates will go to Cook Shire Council 500km away in Cooktown. about? Fair dinkum. I often think if dirt was not free Rio would properly go broke. Those rates would certainly go some way to lessen the financial burden of what they say is struggling Rio town coffers. For those who are not aware, the town is well down the track of becoming a “normal” town, free of Rio’s pennypinching management. The State Government will more than likely see our town become a part of the Cook Shire, and the sooner the better as far as I am concerned. Rio wanted a town of their own, but little did they realise back then how the town would mushroom. It seems to me Rio management is holding off on as much spending as possible, awaiting the outcome of the normalisation process. In the meantime the water, the roads, the infrastructure continues to degenerate, while this multinational rakes in the money and is at any moment about to blow a billion or so south of the Emberly on all-weather roads and other infrastructure. One good thing about all of this is, by the time you read this letter I will have had backhoes, paid for by me, into Tonkin Drive, and they will have ripped the guts out of the crappy, cheap and shoddy drainage system that used to be at the bottom of Tonkin Drive. It’s time to “get over it” AS a Traditional Owner of the Western Cape (Mapoon and Weipa) and as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs and art advocate, I condemn the protests of Thursday, January 26. No person should be subject to such tactics, regardless of the cause. It is not the Aboriginal way of getting things done. Having visited the National Gallery of Australia, which is home to many of my late Grandmother, “Thapich” Dr Gloria Fletcher James AO’s artworks, I also had the opportunity to meet with those involved in the Tent Embassy. It is my perception that it is a ghost of yesterday’s grace, it is also an eye sore and is mainly used as a congregation place for fanatics (some of which you experienced last week) and which no longer serves the full purpose as it did during its inception. I do believe that an Embassy of sorts, ought to be erected and managed as a symbolic institute for First Australians. However I must stress
that it must be governed and facilitated by diplomats and not activists; or else we will be doomed to bad publicity such as has arisen last week, which will not aid the progression of harmony. The “Survival Day”/ “Invasion Day” suggestion which is to rival Australia Day is something only lead by a select few. As a First Australian I celebrate Australia Day. We all celebrate Sorry Day; but I would love to celebrate a Forgiveness Day. I’d love to see Australians celebrate a Forgiveness Day as a part of reconciliation and national pride. It’s the next logical step now that we have a Sorry Day. We must now show maturity as a people and pay respect to the apology and accept it. One can imagine the positive ripples through society and bigotry that would occur as a result. The next step for our race to move forward, must come from us as a people, to take ownership of our past, and our future, and to decide on exactly how we can “get over it” and move forward. “Getting over it” is what we have to do, but the process is still a painful one which the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nation must come to the table together to empower one an other. The people of Cape York have had enough RE: Jason O’Brien MP Member for Cook media release January 16, 2012 Myth 1: World Heritage protection stops economic growth. Pontoons may have been built in the Great Barrier Reef World heritage area etc. but as Cape York Peninsula is a diverse area, bigger than Victoria I am sure the people of the Cape are looking for more diverse industries than just tourism and new pontoons. The Government funded CYPLUS report identified huge areas of the Cape York Peninsula as suitable for agriculture and broad acre farming and capable of sustainably running 400,000 head of cattle. Under the proposed World Heritage listing will people be able to make use of these opportunities? Unfortunately we don’t know. But we do know that the majority of Cape York
will be under Wild Rivers legislation that does restrict new development. Although community consultation has begun, and the people of Cape York Peninsula are being asked if they support the World Heritage listing, we still do not know officially if the World Heritage proposal includes the whole of the Cape York Peninsula, or just parts of it, and what restrictions will be enforced. Myth 2: There was little consultation on Wild Rivers. Yes there has been public consultation on Wild Rivers, but from what I know most people are not aware of the Wild Rivers Code, which details all allowable and disallowed activities. For example, “Required Outcome RO4: Key riparian areas and wildlife corridors are preserved.” “Probable solution PS3.1 Works other than specified works, are setback at least 200 metres from the outer banks of a watercourse or lake in a High Preservation Area (HPA )[where a HPA overlaps a Floodplain Management Area (FMA)] or from a nominated waterway. Page six of the code: “High Preservation Area: New agriculture and animal husbandry activities as defined in the wild rivers act are prohibited within a HPA. Section 42 of the wild rivers act deems an application for such development to be invalid and the assessment manager must refuse to receive the application.” Please note, that on average the HPA on stream type 5 or greater is 2-300 metres either side of the river, stream type 3or 4 is 100 meters and type 1 or 2 is 50 metres. As HPA areas can occur outside of streams also this closes off a lot of land to new development. Mr O’Brien, The consultation maybe considered by government to be wide ranging and detailed but how much notice was taken of Cape York people’s comments and submissions when the Staaten River was declared a wild river two months before public consultation closed? What consideration was given to the submissions received? And the then-Premier of Queensland, Mr Peter Beattie stated at a public meeting in Atherton that only one landholder had objected. Utter hogwash, as I personally know of at least 10 objections from landholders that were submitted. Was the Premier given the correct information? continued page 9

UU from page 8 Myth 3: Enviromental protection is locking up the Cape and is unnecessary. Did you run out of steam here as your facts are pretty pathetic and do not answer the myth. Your statement that the Labor government has built better roads is very debatable. Yes, we all appreciate the new bridges and the bitumen to Laura, but what happened to the Peninsula Development Road (PDR) north of Laura? Locals say it is worse than 15 years ago and this is unacceptable, especially due to the increased number of fatalities and accidents that are occurring I travelled the PDR in a body truck last year and we drove along the well-used table drain as it was in better condition than the main road. To top it off, the PDR is closed from January to May and if you need to use this road, even in emergencies, you need to have a travel permit that is only obtainable on week days. The government wants to encourage more tourists and the present road is obviously unsafe now, and embarrassingly so, when a documentary on the world’s worst roads included the PDR. Regarding the environmental protection on Cape York Peninsula how can anyone honestly say that environmental protection is not locking up the Cape when we have more National Parks than any other area? Wild Rivers will cover around three quarters of the Cape and World Heritage will possibly cover all of the Cape? All have their own legislation with National Park legislation, the Wild Rivers act incorporating 13 other legislations and World Heritage with the act unknown at this stage. The amazing thing is that we will have large areas of the Cape that have three environmental entities, National Parks, Wild Rivers and World Heritage, over the same land. If that’s not overkill what is?
Confusing enough for us, but how will the government untangle the mess that they have brought upon themselves? Another special Cape York legislative act? Myth 4: Indigenous people do not support Wild Rivers legislation. I am sure that you narrowly won the last election on more than the Wild Rivers legislation, as I have seen letters and press releases from indigenous people vehemently opposing Wild Rivers. Winning the seat of Cook does not give a mandate for imposing Wild Rivers on anyone. Myth 5: World Heritage Listing is a done deal. Thanks, Mr O’Brien, for giving us the first indication that the whole of Cape York Peninsula may not be World Heritage Listed as the people of Cape York have had no idea what is proposed. Your comment “Traditional and property owners will obviously be an integral part of this process of developing CONSENT for the application to list parts of the Cape rings nasty alarm bells, because your words are confirming what you call a myth. If you are only consulting for CONSENT how will anyone in opposition to World Heritage be heard? Sorry Mr O’Brien but the people of Cape York have had enough of ineffectual consultation, and are now seeking some say in their future. They have also had enough of lobbyists and ‘feel good’ Southerners having more say in the future of the Cape York Peninsula than the very people that are directly affected, and have obviously been good stewards of the land for decades. The people of Cape York Peninsula respect and value their land and enforced Government legislation, with no adequate funding or relevant management plans in place, will not be as successful as locals having more control over the environmental management of Cape York Peninsula. Mary Shephard Retired Cape York pastoralist Mareeba
Pocket knives to be licensed HERE we go again, another licence. But this time it’s not a government assault on gun owners but pocket knife users. It has been estimated up to 500,000 people across the state who use pocket knives in their job or hobby, in their home, or have one in their car will now be carrying an illegal weapon. Thanks to the Labor Party and the Liberal Party who supported the recent changes to legislation your folding blade pocket knife is now illegal. Can anyone imagine a fisherman, farmer or cattle producer being able to work without one? What about the tradies who have to remove wrappings, remove plastic ties or cut a piece of string or even sharpen a pencil? This is the type of regulation that the law-abiding people of this state don’t need. There are plenty more of similar stupidity. This is what happens when there are too many lawyers or accountants or other paper shufflers in government. Few have any practical knowledge of what goes on in the real world. This ‘nanny’ state needs a clean out of its thousands of unnecessary laws and regulations and a long hard look at the bureaucrats who helped introduce them. The ALP and LNP want people to license their pocket knives. When will we see a rush of applicants? Katter’s party says it will remove these ridiculous new laws, as another means of revenue raising for a broke government. As with the weapons licence fee, the pocket knife fee will undoubtedly be increased over time, probably with different categories. The late Bruce Dixon of the Tully Times newspaper knew his reward of $5000 was safe when he offered it to anyone who could show any difference between ALP and LNP policies! Alan Webb Mareeba

Bicycle security Weipa police are urging community members to secure their bicycles. A lot of bicycle theft results from owners taking insufficient precautions to lock their bikes properly or leaving them in places where they are vulnerable to theft. Many of these bikes are found by police but most bicycle owners never see their bikes again simply because the bicycle has not been marked and the owner cannot be identified. Thankfully Weipa police are able to assist. We have a current register in place whereby owners of bicycles attend Weipa police station, complete a form and take a photograph of the bike. The serial number, description of the bicycle, owners details are entered onto police systems for future reference. If police locate a bicycle or a suspect a person riding a bicycle they believe to be stolen, a quick check of the system will be able to confirm who the lawful owner is and the bicycle can be returned. and Main Roads website www.tmr.qld. gov.au/Travel-and-transport/Cycling/ Bike-user-guide/Security.aspx which contains some useful tips for locking and securing bicycles. On a lighter note... Weipa station has for a very very long month or two suffered the daily ritual of a whining and whinging Constable; “Oh my boats still not here yet, when’s it gonna get here, if it’s not here soon heads are gonna roll etc, etc, etc.. ” Well we are all very happy to now report that it arrived last Friday and the whining and whinging has finally and thankfully come to an end. Now we have to put up with the grins and boasting remarks and the “I can’t wait to get me boat out, the barra won’t know what’s hit them, when’s it gonna stop raining, when it’s not going to be so rough etc, etc, etc?” I’m led to believe that the boat has all the bells and whistles plus more and has taken prime position in his garage right next to his bigger then average weight set, bulk order of protein powders and full length mirrors. Let’s hope that like it’s owner it’s not all show and no go? Until next week stay safe.

The disciples that Jesus chose to continue the work of spreading the gospel when he went back to heaven were not deeply holy men, but ordinary people just like you and me. By the time their work was done for the Lord and they died, they certainly grew in saintly ways, but it was their faith in the Lord that put them right with God. Over the years I’ve heard people say that before they come to the Lord they want to clean
themselves up (spiritually) first, but the Lord is constantly throwing a “come as you are” party. Besides, when do they know that they are cleaned up enough to front the Lord? In the NIV Bible, in Isaiah Ch 64 v 6 it says “All our acts are like filthy rags! Nah, come as you are and trust in the Lord’s goodness. Jesus said in John Ch 6 v 37, “ … I will never turn away anyone who comes to me.”
At many evangelistic meetings the hymn “Just as I am” is sung and the words goJust as I am without one plea, But that thy blood was shed for me, And as thou bidst me come to thee, Oh Lamb of God I come, I come. As this poster I once saw says, “Commit a death-defying act- accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!” Rev Michael Connolly.
NEWS / OPINION
SCOOP The Newshound Sniffing out the stories about our four-legged friends... Cycads are not a dog’s best friend IN between the rain showers on the weekend my mum and I got stuck into a bit of gardening. Like most dogs, I love playing and exploring in the garden. There are so many interesting things to sniff at, play with and eat, but did you know that there are some plants that can cause pets severe poisoning? The common household cycad plant might be an attractive addition to your tropical garden but it can be deadly to dogs if eaten. One of my K9 pals, Penny, an eight-month old cross-breed, actually died recently from liver failure, after eating the leaves and stem of a cycad, also known as sago palm. Penny was admitted to the James Cook University’s Veterinary Emergency Centre in Townsville on Christmas Eve after a sudden onset of vomiting and lethargy. Nearly two weeks of intensive therapy at the centre’s 24-hour intensive care unit could not save her and Penny passed away. All parts of the cycad plant are considered extremely poisonous, and even eating as little as two seeds could be enough to kill a dog. Like the leaves of a lot of plants, we dogs find those of the cycad very attractive smelling, which encourages us to have a taste. If your dog has eaten part of a cycad plant the first symptoms of poisoning will usually be vomiting, dehydration and lethargy. Even PAWS UP to the wonderful people from the Cape Animal Protection Shelter (CAPS) for the fantastic work they do caring for homeless and unwanted dogs in Weipa and the surrounding areas. I caught up with two of the CAPS volunteers, Kylie Walling and Lauren Nash, last Wednesday at the Nanum Shopping Centre, when the
if treated with intravenous fluid therapy by one of those nice kind veterinarian people, the symptoms often subside within a day or two, to be replaced by the development of severe liver damage that could result in liver failure and death within seven to 14 days. And the mortality rates for dogs with cycad poisoning is pretty high (between 38 and 60 per cent) so it’s a serious disease to treat. Prevention is obviously better than cure so here are a few tips to keep dogs safe from cycad poisoning: • We dogs are an inquisitive lot, so if possible keep cycads away from areas where we are unsupervised, and don’t let us roam free in areas where cycads are planted. • Remove any fallen seeds or nuts to reduce the temptation for us to conduct a taste test. • Remove loose vegetation from cycad plants and dispose of carefully. • If you do see your dog eating a cycad plant contact your veterinarian immediately for first aid advice.
From The Chair WHAT an excellent Australia Day, and a very fitting occasion to officially open the lakes recreational area. To all the wonderful people who got out of bed early to run/ walk, help with breakfast or attend the official ceremony, I hope it was well worth it. Many of you would not be aware that Lake Patricia was once the place to go on the weekends for picnics, parties, swimming, canoeing, sailing and sailboarding. There was the annual raft race. You had to get to the lakes early to get a good spot. Sadly, it was an area that fell victim to the slashing of Rio expenditure in 1991, and the lakes fell into disrepair. A few years ago, in consultation with Rio Tinto and WCCCA, WTA took on the project to inject a bit of life back into the lakes, and presto, here we are today with this lovely facility. This project was overseen by Joan Stratton and Jamie Campbell and we thank them for their vision. I would also like to thank Nicole Howcroft, Ian Pressley and Trevor Snodgrass who, together with Sodexo, spent their own time on the weekend putting in the plants and finishing touches. Australia Day makes us reflect on what is good about being Australian. Here we are in this beautiful, remote corner of Cape York celebrating what this wonderful country has to offer. Some of you were born here, some of us have been lucky enough to adopt

Australia as home, but there are not many Australians who have the good fortune to call our beautiful little part of Australia, home. Such an event could not go ahead without the support of many people. I would like to thank the staff of Weipa Town Authority, my fellow members Trevor Snodgrass and Ben Laidlaw, official guests, Patsy Hudson and Corrine Matasia, guest speaker, Jo-anne Scarini and Weipa Oz Tag for the breakfast. Congratulations to the winners of the Bush Ballad Competition,
Suzanne Gane and Meg Gordon and the best dressed Aussie, Michelle Snodgrass. Thank you also to Debbie Ferraris who donated the embroidered towels for the fun run winners. Warm congratulations to the nominees and winners of the Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year and Event of the Year. Next week the bubble will burst as issues that need to be addressed will be discussed. Let us work together to make Weipa the best town in Australia. – Carrie Gay
girls took a few minutes break from their fundraising bake sale, to have their photo taken with me. It’s a pity there is a need for kind people like the CAPS volunteers, but it makes me feel better knowing that somebody cares about my K9 buddies who are not as fortunate as I am. It’s also a pity my mum wouldn’t let me have one of the cakes the girls were selling...they looked delicious!
My new friends: CAPS volunteers Kylie Walling and Lauren Nash.

Strangers entertain at carnival Alf Wilson story
on rugby league Rugby league: the greatest game of all IT is finally here the first game of footy for the year – the All Stars playing against the Indigenous All Stars this Saturday, on the Gold Coast. I am so excited, I can’t wait, and I honestly think it will be a cracker. There is so much talent on offer it is a great way to start our season off. I would like to wish Elsja Mosby, Bianca Ambrum, Sarah Sailor and Tristian Neileman Adams all the best and I’m sure you will have lasting memories. On the Australia Day weekend Kowanyama travelled to Rockhampton to play in the Reconciliation Cup, with 32 teams participating, and performed very, very well
. The Kowanyama Strangers made their way through to the semi-finals which is a great effort. Unfortunately they were beaten by a very strong Ipswich team which included some NRL and Queensland Cup players but I’m sure they all enjoyed the great experience. For all the kids out there, this Saturday we have our junior sign-on day down at the Weipa Footy oval from 9am to noon and I hope to see you all there. It takes all different kinds to make the world go around doesn’t it? It’s so funny when people have a little chip away at me about AFL. Well, all I can say is “good luck too you guys because rugby league is the greatest game of all.
I thrive on any challenges AFL throws up for me, which inspires me to promote rugby league to its highest level. Once again, do not forget to send your favourite footy pictures into the Western Cape Bulletin or me at c.miller@qrl.com.au as I have some great prizes for the supporter of the month. If you would like to ask me any football related questions just send me an email and I can possibly help out. This week the supporter of the week is from Kowanyama celebrating after last year’s win in the Cluster grand final. They will go into the draw for the supporter of the month, who will win a great rugby league pack.
Spilla’s Supporter of the Week Send your favourite footy photos to Spilla at c.miller@qrl.com.au or to the Bully at editor@ westerncapebulletin. com.au and you could win the Supporter of the Month prize!
CAPE Cluster premiers Kowanyama performed well at last weekend’s Central Queensland Indigenous Development Reconciliation rugby league carnival at Rockhampton reaching the last four teams in the plate section. The Kowanyama Strangers team lost Sunday morning’s plate semifinal 12-4 to champion southern team Ipswich Purga Wagtails. Coach Dave Kennedy was delighted with the performance during the carnival during which the side won three matches at a carnival contested by 32 teams . “We were known as the entertainers here and carnival organiser Justin Loomans made a special presentation to us, Kennedy said. Kennedy rated forwards Morris
Burke, John Kennedy and Leigh Ollender and backs Elron Lawrence, Stanley David and Maxwell Luke as standouts in the semi-final. “We went better than anybody expected as we were the only bush team playing against city sides, Kennedy said. Other players who did well at the carnival were centre Cameron Josiah and forwards Tony Daniels and Evans Possum. “We have had a documentary filmed about us and the trip, Kennedy said. He said the Kowanyama team named the Wallabies would be back to defend their Cape Cluster premiership in 2012. “We will have our ground at Kowanyama ready for one home game and will travel for the others. We also will host an Allblacks carnival later in the year, Kennedy said.
Brush up on crabbing rules DID you know that lifting another person’s crab pot can attract a $1000 on-the-spot fine? Do you also know the correct way to label your crab pots? If you answered no to these questions, you need to brush up on crabbing rules. “Fishers are reminded that the legal limit is four crab pots per person, with a bag limit of 10 mud crabs per person, Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) district officer Matt Davidson said. “There are fines between $1000 and $50,000 if people are found checking or removing other people’s pots. “Correct marking of crab pots aids in the detection of this offence. “For crab pots with floats, the surname of the owner should be clearly marked on the float, and the surname and address of the owner should be clearly marked on the pot, Mr Davidson said. “For tied-off pots,
fishers are required to clearly mark their surname and address on the pot, and their surname on a tag attached to the apparatus, which should be visible above the waterline. “For pots with floats, a light-coloured float measuring 15 centimetres in every direction is required, on which details can be permanently marked with a soldering iron. “For pots, stamped aluminium tags are recommended so the details won’t disappear. “There are penalties for insufficiently marked crab pots, including confiscation and Fisheries Infringement Notices of up to $500. Mr Davidson said a recent survey which collected feedback from more than 400 recreational fishers around the state, helped to determine that female mud crabs would remain a ‘no-take or possession’ species in Queensland. “Female mud crabs are a protected species
and must not be taken from Queensland waters,â€? he said. “Commercial fishers also need to abide by this rule. “It’s easy to tell the difference between the two: a male mud crab has a V-shaped flap on the bottom of its shell, while a female mud crab has a more rounded flap on the bottom of its shell. “The size of a mud crab must be decided by measuring the widest part of its carapace, irrespective of damage to the carapace. To l e a r n h o w t o correctly identify and measure mud crabs, view the YouTube video on crab rules in Queensland at www.youtube. com/fisheriesqld Catch the latest fishing rules at www. fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23. JET ski users and boaties hitting the water are being reminded about new safety rules which have come into effect from January 1, 2012. The changes had been put in place to better protect all water users and reduce the risk of accidents. From January 1 people operating jet skis at more than 10 knots have to keep a 30-metre distance from other moving vessels. The 30-metre distance rule will mean jet ski users and everyone around them have enough space to enjoy our waterways safely. Jet ski users will also need to carry a registered EPIRB when they’re more than two nautical miles outside partially smooth waters. Handheld ares and a v-sheet, used to attract attention to a vessel in distress, have now become standard equipment when operating outside designated smooth water. Jet skis are now a lot more powerful than they used to be and are capable of travelling faster and further distances, so it makes sense that enhanced safety measures are put in place.

Other changes introduced from January 1, 2012 will also affect boaties. And if you plan to go boating outside our local area three more locations have been identiďŹ ed as designated coastal bars, requiring all passengers in an open boat under 4.8 metres to wear a life jacket when crossing. The mouths of the Mooloolah River and Round Hill Creek and the Gold Coast Seaway entrance have been included in those locations that will now require life jackets. Maritime Safety Queensland will also introduce improved night and electronic navigation training for all new licence holders so they’re better prepared for the responsibility of operating a boat. Under the new rules, instructors providing licence courses for boaties through the BoatSafe program will offer additional training covering all aspects of safe navigation. For more information, visit the Maritime Safety Queensland website at www.msq.qld.gov.au or contact the Cairns regional ofďŹ ce on 4052 7400.

Getting back to the the Barra opening...by the time you read this it will be well and truly under way. The size has changed, if you haven’t heard, and it is now 58cm not 60cm as it was in 2011. Bag limits remain the same, but don’t be fooled, the bag limit is five Barra per person at any one time. That means in your boat, ice box, or freezer at home (two ďŹ llets mean one ďŹ sh). The best tasting Barra you are legally allowed to take is 58-65cm. As Barra get bigger their table quality deteriorates as they start to change sex from male to female at around 80cm. The Weipa ďŹ shery is a bit different to the rest of Oz, where the change from male to female is a lot earlier as barra have been caught at 65cm full of roe, making them female. The jury is still out on that one. I have been here for a few years but have noticed the lead up to this season has seen a lot
more Barra about. Live bait, Prawn, Mullet, or Herring, is the choice of most anglers wanting a fresh feed of Barra. I suppose it has been nearly four months since fresh Barra has been on the table, but there are some top quality lures well worth a try. Classic 97, 120 and F18 have some new colours, even one with a 4X label on the side (they make you a bit thirsty), and the new Jackall range, not cheap, also the Mangrove Studio, from Japan, have some great sliders that I have had some great success with. I tell you, lures are a lot more fun than soaking a bait. H a v e n ’t h a d a n y reports on Bluewater ďŹ shing with the weather being the way its been. Hopefully they will be really hungry when the sea settle. If you get a good Barra for the opening email a pic to me by Saturday and you will be the ďŹ rst in the Bully for the year.

IF you missed out on the Grunter run last Thursday I think there will be plenty more before the wet finishes. It’s a real shame if you get caught with undersized fish or you are over the bag limit. If you need a chart of all the fish sizes and bag limits, pop into Weipa News and Sports or Weipa 4WD in the shopping centre and pick one up, they are free. Bit of a let down when I found out that the DPI Fisheries had moved the Barra opening from midday on January 30 to midday, February 1. Took me by surprise, and plenty of others. One thing I wish for is that the Queensland Government would get their act together and have one rule for the whole State. I know that they will tell you that the fishery is different in the Gulf, compared to the east coast, b u t that can be argued shery about the fish hery up and down thee coast, so why have havve two rules? different rule es? It’s like having h an 80km speed limit on thee Bruce Highway nnorth of Rocky because the
roads aren’t as good as the roads in the south-east corner. By the way, don’t blame the local Fisheries Officers for the stuff-up about the Barra opening, they took the advice on the internet as meaning the 2012-13 Barra season, the same as I did. Back to Grunter (that’s a better subject)...as I said before, they will have their bites usually about three to four days after the full and new moons, so plan your fishing times around that time of the month. Usually the Prawn let themselves be known around the same time. I’m not saying you won’t catch Grunter and Prawn at other times during the month, it’s just that is the usual time they are in good numbers. The quality will improve over the next 10 weeks as spawning gets under way and the big females arrive in better numbers. Try and limit taking the big roe-ed up females. Grunter are being caught in most of the usual haunts like Red Beach,Mission River Bridge, Gonbung, Evans Landing and Rocky Point. Prawn is proving the best bait, especially fresh locallycaught Prawn.
