Sell our National Parks Challenging suggestion by University of Queensland Professor AUSTRALIA may need to consider selling off some of its National Parks if it is to be able to afford to conserve its most important landscapes and species for future generations. This challenging suggestion comes from Professor Hugh Possingham, director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions (CEED) at The University of Queensland. “Basically, Australia is facing some very tough decisions,� Professor Possingham said. “For all our present nationwide investment in conservation, we are still losing both species and ecosystem integrity. “We clearly need better ways to decide what we can afford to save, because the current system plainly isn’t working as well as we’d hoped. “The evidence indicates that Australian native species are still disappearing at a rate 100 to 1000 times faster than normal. “Over the past 200 years, 22 mammal species have become extinct, over 100 are now on the threatened and endangered species list, and 6 more bird taxa were recently declared extinct.

Art auction to benefit Thapich’s bursary THAPICH Dr Gloria Fletcher AO was a well-respected Thaynakwith Elder from the Weipa region and a pioneer in the arts. She was an inspiration to the many people who came into contact with her, not only through her own work but also as a writer and recorder of language. From her own community, including that of Trinity Beach where she added character and colour for more than 20 years, to the broader arts community both nationally and internationally, Thapich’s greatest gift was to teach the importance of culture. Thapich generously left some funds in her will to set up a bursary, as it was her wish to promote and support emerging young Aboriginal artists and aspiring young Aboriginal arts workers from the Western Cape York Peninsula. The development and success of the bursary recipients will also support and stimulate art and art practice from the region. It has been a year since Thapich’s sad passing, and during this time a committee has been set up to drive the Western Cape Aboriginal Youth Art Bursary. The bursary honours the memory, achievements and legacy of Thapich, the first Aboriginal artist with tertiary qualifications in art. The funds Thapich bequeathed to the bursary are modest, and the committee have worked to raise further monies to create

o Cyclone Far North Queensland gives up drinking ANOTHER Cairns pub has bitten the dust recently. The Cape York Hotel has closed its doors after 114 years. They had a final bumper night when all 40 locals turned up to pack the bar. (I wonder how they managed that? Perhaps they packed one corner at a time and took

photographs.) It is all very sad and you have to wonder what the landlord will do with this fine old building. The closure comes on the heels of another - The Courthouse has just collapsed too. People are just not buying enough beer for publicans to turn over an honest dollar. One of the pillars of Australian society appears to be crumbling. I don’t know what to say. Queenslanders giving up beer is like, well, fish giving up breathing. No, swimming. I meant swimming. Fish don’t do the breathing thing. If this catches on, it could have wide ranging implications, and strike at the very roots of

a tenth of what would be needed to protect most species and ecosystems and reduce rates of extinction, he estimated. “As funding at this level is unlikely to become available in the short run, we should look at putting resources into those National Parks and species where we have the best chance of achieving something - and that may mean selling off smaller parks that are not viable,� he said. However, selling national parks need not mean their loss in a conservation sense – many well-off Australians now had a strong desire to look after native bushland and its species on a private basis, while many farmers were revegetating cleared land with native trees, leading to recovery in native species. “Also there are enough covenants and restrictions in force now to ensure conservation of the landscape even when it is managed privately,� he said. “If we have to refocus public investment on the National Parks where we can achieve

the best conservation results, then maybe we should also find ways to encourage more Australians to take care of their own landscapes and endangered species privately.�

from page 1 “Fourteen species of frogs are on their last legs.� With limited funds, both government and private, for conservation the nation may have to look at a new system for allocating those funds where both the need and the prospects of success are greatest, Professor Possingham said. This implied that public funds may have to be withdrawn from some areas and reinvested in others. “You could liken it to triage in a World War II military hospital: tough decisions may need to be taken about which patients have the best chance of survival and the resources allocated accordingly. “Otherwise you spread your effort too thinly and achieve too little. “This is not a popular point of view – but it is grounded in reality. “While 12 per cent of the continent is enclosed in National Parks, few have sufficient resources to manage their biota intensively. In the absence of major new sources of funds, we need to consider where the prospects of success are greatest and, indeed, what success in conservation actually consists of.� In the past, Australian conservation tended to be driven by a wish to restore parts of the continent to a pre-European state – but this had proved impractical. “It can’t be done in a dynamic world, where human influences and changing climates are constantly altering the rules for survival,� Professor Possingham said. Across the whole of Australia, current conservation investment was probably about

SKILL360 Australia has been selected by the Federal Government as the only North Queensland-based company to deliver Australian Apprenticeship Support Services for the whole of the North Queensland and Torres Strait Region. Chief executive officer Peter Langbien said, “We’ve been operating throughout North Queensland since 1984 and have built a strong community focus. We are very proud to be the only North Queenslandb a s e d o rg a n i s a t i o n that has been offered a contract to deliver these services. “Our passion for, and understanding of, the region is what drives us to skill-proof the North Queensland and Torres Strait community.” Australian Apprenticeship Support Services providers are contracted by the Federal Government to supply support services to both employers and those wanting to take up an apprenticeship as a career path. “As an Australian Apprenticeship Centre, we will be assisting with the signing of training contracts and also assess, approve and process the payment of Federal Government incentives to eligible employers and personal benefits to

eligible Australian apprentices,” Mr Langbien said. “I believe that this is one of the most exciting developments in the history of Skill360 Australia. The company has improved and evolved over the past 28 years to embrace service excellence as our cornerstone. “Our commitment to the education, employment and training needs of our community’s workforce will now be enhanced with this additional service. We will be delivering customer focused apprenticeship services to businesses from Bowen across to the Northern Territory border and North to the Torres Strait”. Mr Langbien said Skill360 were excited about the opportunity to deliver Australian Apprenticeship Support Services throughout North Queensland, due to commence on July 1, 2012. “This is a wonderful addition to our current range of workforce solutions that includes group training, recruitment, training, labour hire and payroll services. “It is also a huge vote of confidence by the Federal Government in the ability of a local North Queensland community-based company to undertake these types of contracts,” he said.

PDR open with limits

Single job provider for remote communities THE Federal Government recently announced significant changes to remote employment and community development services to help more people get into jobs and participate in their community. From July 1, 2013, the new $1.5 billion Remote Jobs and Communities Program will provide a more integrated and flexible approach to employment and participation services for people living in remote areas of Australia. The Remote Jobs and Communities Program will see jobseekers assisted by a single provider with a permanent presence in their region, ensuring they are getting better support to get the skills needed to get a job. It will also ensure people who are not working are participating in activities that contribute to developing strong and sustainable communities. Consultations held last year in remote communities across remote Australia found that current services are providing short term help but are not delivering the long term results that are needed. Julie Collins, the Federal Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development, says the program is designed to provide better support for people wanting to work. “People told us they want to

see one employment services provider in their community, offering better training and support to get local people into jobs. A job contributes strongly to personal, social and economic development and is essential to closing the gap on Indigenous disadvantage.” “This new program will build on the strengths of existing employment and participation and community programs, while providing a more flexible and responsive service to better meet the needs of people living in remote Australia,” she said. The four main programs currently delivering employment and participation services and community development in remote Australia - Job Services Australia, Disability Employment Services, Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) and the Indigenous Employment Program – will be rolled into the new integrated service.

• A single, local point of call for job seekers Jobseekers in remote areas will be assisted by a single Remote Jobs and Communities provider with a permanent presence in the region. This will provide people with better service on the ground, rather than the fly-in-fly-out support that currently operates in many places. Jobseekers will get personalised support from this single, local point of call, ensuring they are assisted to have the right skills needed to match local job opportunities. • Better support to get people ready for work and strengthen communities Remote Jobs and Communities providers will work in partnership with the community to develop a Community Action Plan, which sets out employment, economic and community development goals. A new flexible $508 million Participation Account will allow Remote Jobs and Communities providers to develop activities that help people get ready for work and also benefit their community, such as local social enterprises. The Participation Account will also allow Remote Jobs and Communities providers to support people to overcome barriers to employment, with services such as literacy and numeracy training or support to tackle alcohol and drug abuse. A new $240 million Community Development Fund will support meaningful participation projects developed by the community to get people ready for work. The ‘No Show No Pay’ rule will be applied in remote areas. People who fail to participate will have their payments suspended. • Local service providers Local service providers will

be offered a five year funding agreement, with options for further extensions up to five years, to give greater certainty to providers and communities. The Federal Government will provide $15 million to help strengthen local Indigenous organisation’s governance and capacity in the lead up to the model commencing on July 1, 2013. • A strong pathway to employment for young people A new flagship program for youth, Remote Youth Development and Leadership Corps for people aged under 25, will provide 3,000 young people each year with a clear pathway to employment. Building on the success of the Indigenous Rangers program, the Remote Youth Development and Leadership Corps will provide a nine to 12-month program geared towards making a successful transition from school into real employment opportunities for young people. It will focus on providing workexperience in jobs that are available in, or near, their community. There will be mentoring by local leaders and training providing at the Certificate II level. CDEP wages Eligible people who, under grandfathered arrangements, are currently still receiving CDEP wages will continue to receive wages for the first five years of participation in the new model. There are currently about 500 participants in CDEP activities outside the 65 Remote Service Regions, where Job Services Australia contracts are in place until 30 June 2015. The Government will provide $2.5 million to ensure these communities continue to have access to participation activities delivered through Job Services Australia providers.

THE Peninsula Developmental Road from 2km north of Laura township to Coen, and between Coen Airport and Weipa is subject to a 25 tonne GVM limit due to saturated pavements. Thapich Pootchemunka farewelled in Aurukun HUNDREDS of mourners attended the funeral of incumbent Aurukun mayor and Wik elder Thapich Pootchemunka, held at the Aurukun Uniting Church last Friday. Mr Pootchemunka was contesting the Aurukun Shire Council mayoral role for the third time when he died on April 22 after a sudden illness. One of Cape York’s most respected Indigenous mayors, Thapich was remembered as a devoted family man and a visionary leader at the funeral service. Mourners from Cape York and beyond spilled out of the Church during the service, which was followed by a funeral procession to the Aurukun cemetery where Mr Mr Pootchemunka was laid to rest. Member for Cook, David Kempton, described it as a tough day for the Aurukun community. “Aurukun is a very close community and Mr Pootchemunka was well loved here,” he said. “He is going to be missed sadly here and across Cape York. I think this is a tragic loss.”

RUNNING from Canberra to the tip of Cape York raising funds for AFFIRM (Australian Mental Health Research) is no mean feat, as solo ultra-marathon runner Brad Carron-Arthur is finding out. However, the hospitality and generosity of the communities he has visited is making it all worth while. Brad was invited to stopover in Weipa last Thursday by the local men’s group and welcomed the opportunity to spread the mental health research word and take a breather before continuing on his trek northward. After spending time with Western Cape College Year 10 students

Brad attended an event at the Carpentaria Golf Club which was aimed at bringing awareness to mental illness as well as raising over $1500 for AFFIRM, and bringing Brad closer to his $20,000 target. “I would like to thank all the townsfolk of Weipa in general, and those people in particular who took the time to organise the fundraiser,� Brad said. “I was thrilled with the response and would like to thank everyone who generously supported me while in Weipa.� “Everyone in the Cape has shown me unrivalled generosity and support during this, the final and most difficult leg of my journey.� Hitting the road again

Sad to be leaving Weipa WE would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to the community, our colleagues, patients and our great friends. For the last five years Weipa has been our home, and we have enjoyed being part of many committees, sporting clubs and social functions. Our current employment with Weipa Medical Centre will end on June 1, 2012 and we cannot be offered any permanent work to stay in town. Therefore we have chosen to leave our home, well before we were ready to go. This has been a very distressing and unsettling period for our family as we have thoroughly enjoyed living and working in Weipa . We hope the Weipa Hospital can continue to provide the excellent, dedicated and efficient health care that we strived to deliver the community. We shall be moving to Charleville and continuing

Coalition needs to act on election promises THE Queensland Coalition campaigned on a number of issues addressing remote communities in the Far North during the recent State Government election: Better health care (or at least ease of access to services), lower cost of living in remote communities i.e. freight and travel prices - but from what I heard, offered no further subsidising or road improvements. They also campaigned on matters almost in direct relevance to First Australians and Torres Strait Islanders, matters such as traditional hunting no longer being exempt from animal protec-

tion and cruelty act as Sea Turtles and Dugongs are an endangered species. They also promised to back these bans up with educational and informative services, training and facilities i.e. conservation centres, locally trained rangers and conservationists and a stronger emphasis on the endangerment of the creatures. The LNP also campaigned on a promise to review the Alcohol Management Plans, or in my opinion, Apartheid Prohibition. The end result of such a review could mean a lift in the laws, or a greater emphasis on the areas exALP ministers such as Curtis Pitt, refused to advocate for, such as rehabilitation to address the addiction to alcohol, not just the consumption of; and also facilities, services and health care workers and mental health workers and services to address social issues that stem from alcoholism. They were elected and voted into office by a landslide majority on these platforms. I am pleased to see

these promises, regardless of if one agrees with all of them or not, being acted upon so soon after assuming power. To uphold the bargain you present during a campaign is something we deserve in the Far North. However, I do sincerely hope that the new Minister for Local Government and Indigenous Affairs and Health will listen to the wants and needs of the local people. I hope that the consultation meeting held in Cairns last week with the Cape York mayors was not just a box-tick exercise. Time will tell, but for now it looks to be improving. In my opinion, what needs to happen is for the Police Minister to come onboard and re-think/re-evaluate how they train their personnel - especially those placed in communities where various intervention policies are at play, i.e. the implementation of cultural awareness training, and an emphasis on the various mental health factors that may be rife in dysfunctional communities, in order to be taken into account at

some stage in the training/ re-training process in order to better communicate with and police their neighbours. I hope the new Queensland State Government can realise, and act upon such a realisation, the importance of solutions that back-up and address the causes, not just bans and prohibition that merely address the symptoms. You can have both, you can have even one of them, but you can’t just have a stand-alone ban. It isn’t fair and is in fact nothing short of segregation. I am glad that the ignorance of people like Curtis Pitt, who all insisted that the Alcohol Management Plans are working in their current format, and his ALP cronies who enforced this separatism and degeneration of respect Governments have for First Australians, are out of office for the next four years at least. I hope their successors put their money where there mouths are and submit to action and progress and genuine, capacity building

Online Working Safety Group survey What Aussie mums really

COALITION Members and Senators will be surveying parents across the country about the internet experiences of their family and their children, as part of the work of the Coalition’s Online Safety Working Group, said Warren Entsch, Federal Member for Leichhardt. “The survey covers such matters as ownership and use of computers, phones and other devices; use of social media; and any experiences with cyber-bullying,” Mr Entsch said. “I encourage all parents to take the time to respond to this survey. The more information we have, the better placed we will be to make effective policy recommendations about how we help parents and

teachers ensure the safety of our children and young people online.” The survey can be answered online, and Coalition parliamentarians will be putting a link to the survey on their websites. A hard copy version of the survey will also be available. The Coalition Online Safety Working Group was established earlier this year by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to make recommendations on policy to improve online safety for children and young people. Bio trees provide the fuel of the future UNIVERSITY of Queensland researchers have planted five hectares of Pongamia trees at Hope Vale, north Queensland in a bid to create a commercially viable plantation for sustainable regional development and biofuel production in northern Australia. In conjunction with Cape York’s traditional land owners and partners, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Integrative Legume Research (CILR) is aiming to plant a further 3000 hectares within the first three years of the partnership, which will ultimately yield an estimated 10 to 15 million litres of biofuel. The seeds from the oil-rich Pongamia pinnata (also called Millettia) tree provide a sustainable solution to the production of biofuel, which in turn, will help alleviate the environmental ramifications caused by automotive, aviation, mining, energy, and marine industries. Director of the CILR Professor Peter Gresshoff is UQ’s

driving force behind the seven year project and believes the initial stages will demonstrate the utility of local biofuel production. “It’s a native species that has already grown in the area for thousands of years,” he said. “More and more communities will be able to adopt our research and potentially support nations outside of Australia.” But if that’s not enough of a reason, the tree requires minimal nitrogen fertiliser, grows fast, shows a strong tolerance to drought and salinity, plus it won’t compete with prime agricultural land. The seeds are also inedible, which makes the crop worry-free when it comes to the controversial food-for-fuel debate. John McIntyre of Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation says that project partners are also committed to indigenous employment as well as ensuring community and commercial success.

“Approximately 80 new jobs will be created in the first five years,” he said. Over the next decade biobased products will increasingly play a pivotal role in the global shift from fossil fuel-dependent economies to a greener and cleaner future. Despite this promise, extensive research is needed for optimal genetic material suited to specific regions, innovative management and harvesting procedures and down-stream conversion and utilisation. Australia’s current diesel requirement is about 20 billion litres a year. Professor Gresshoff said pongamia-derived biodiesel was thought to initially meet 20 per cent of the demand with only 7000 square kilometers of plantations. It was an unlimited possibility considering the country has close to one million square kilometres where Pongamia trees could flourish.

Big George takes his last ride

THE Far North Queensland trucking industry lost one of it’s favourite sons following the sudden death of George Robinson on April 21, 2012. Friends and family gathered in Cairns for his funeral service last week, and a memorial service was held on Sunday, May 6 at Putts Palms in Weipa. Big George was born on the November 3, 1955 to proud parents Francis and Nancy in Akaroa, New Zealand. He left school to take up truck driving, which had been an interest since a young age for George. He learnt his skills from those closest to him; from his father and brothers and many others on the Banks Peninsula, New Zealand which is one of the best training grounds ever to learn driving. With great driving skills and experience George travelled to Cairns, Australia in 1981 to follow the love of his life Elizabeth Dillon, who he married that same year in November. He settled in Cairns and in 1984 became a much-loved father to son Cory, and later in 1985 to his daughter Danica. As a father he has made his kids very proud of him for whom

he was, a man well respected and loved by many near and far. He has taught his kids many things from their first steps, riding bikes and even having the patience while teaching them to drive and the strength to teach his son Cory to drive trucks, but most importantly he has taught his kids how to love and respect family and friends. George was always there for his kids, whether it was for a yarn or help fixing various different things, and if he couldn’t do it in person he would always find a way to help. He wasn’t there just for his kids. George really did do anything, and everything, for those he loved and knew. He had the biggest heart they have ever known. Over the years as the kids grew up George took the family on many adventures from camping with friends or vacations on the beach, but the adventures he loved most were the ones in the

truck – even if at a young age they only made it to Kuranda. George leaves behind a son that will always idolise him and a daughter that will always be in awe of the great man and father he was. George has been a well-known identity in Far North Qld for many years and is one of the faces of FNQ’s trucking industry. With trips from Cairns to Kurumba, Mareeba to Weipa and most places in between, George became a welcome sight for sore eyes between the dirt, dust and swarms of tourists. George was loved by so many people and has been described as “the guy with a heart of gold”. Many of his customers considered him not to be just a great driver, but part of the family. The men could have a cold XXXX with George and then the women could sit and gossip about Home & Away with him. – Contributed

It took me about six or seven years to get the weight off. My waistline got to proportions I have never seen before. I had to come to grips with the fact that I couldn’t keep eating what I wanted and doing no exercise.” Diabetes Queensland CEO Michelle Trute said busy lifestyles, processed food and too many labour-saving devices are just some of the reasons why most of us are carrying extra weight around the belly and causing increased risk of lifestyle-related chronic disease and avoidable hospitalisation. “The way we live in cities is exacerbating health problems and causing a large increase in preventable conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers,” Ms Trute said. “We know that health budgets are in overload and there’s a shortage of hospital beds. JESUS was always the vital cog in the machinery of God’s plan of salvation, and any attempt to reject Jesus would see God move to make sure this doesn’t happen, even if they were the spiritual leaders of God’s chosen people of the time, the Jews. The Pharisees and members of Herod’s party normally do not get on, because most of the Jews hated being under Roman rule, and the Pharisee’s were among them.

Herod’s party was made up of Jews who agreed with the family of Herod’s who ruled, even though they represented Rome. Here we read that they were willing to put aside their differences to trap Jesus. When they asked the question of whether it was lawful to pay taxes to Rome or not, it was a loaded question that was designed to trap the Lord, but he knew what was going on. If Jesus had answered “yes” to the question, the Pharisees, on behalf of the many Jews, would have accused Jesus of being a traitor. On the other hand, if he had said “no” then

the Herodian Jews were ready to jump in and accuse him of treason. But they were up against the greatest Debater the world has ever seen! He answered that you should not look upon paying taxes as going against God or Caesar, because you should give to God what belongs to God, and to Caesar what belongs to Caesar! God gives benefits and expects his dues, (tithing) and the same goes for Caesar! (tax). Talk about slap them with a wet mullet from the Sea of Galilee! The Bible said they were amazed at his answer. Work Start team commence work shadowing THE Inidgenous PathWays Solutions (IPS) Work Start team have visited Rio Tinto Alcan and other employers in Weipa this week to commence work shadowing. This experience allows both the IPS team members the opportunity to experience potential work areas and roles, and potential employers to be able to make more informed decisions when selecting suitable staff. The team have had the opportunity to work shadow day and night in the mine on haul trucks, and light vehicles, as well as in the service bay. Some of the team members have also worked shadowed in support areas, including administration. The team have all enjoyed the first week of this experience and are looking forward to a second week of work shadowing opportunities.

She doesn’t sleep well and she can’t focus on her school work. She’s too ashamed to talk to anyone about it and she feels very lonely. It can be really scary and confusing for kids when the people they respect hurt

them or those around them. Family fighting can make kids sad, angry, frightened and lonely. Some kids rebel and start getting into trouble and some develop low self-esteem. When we’re angry with someone we sometimes act before we think. Some parents don’t realise how much anger and violence can upset kids. Growing up in a family filled with love, respect and support helps give kids the confidence to follow their dreams and the courage to try new things. Too sweet to be true A COUPLE of weeks ago I informed you about the implications of sugar overuse. I think an even bigger problem is the use of artiďŹ cial sweeteners, not necessarily for your weight, but certainly for your health. Artificial sweeteners are found in diet colas and sugar-free cordials, yoghurts, chewing gums and other products which are sweet, yetsugar-free products. These sweet treats are not only causing harm to your system but also may promote weight gain. Everything you ingest through your mouth will have an effect on your body. There is no way around it. Compare it to the fuel that you put in the tank of your car. Have you tried fueling your petrol car with diesel yet? Even though our body is designed to get rid of toxins and chemicals that it cannot use for energy consumption, with the overload of chemicals in recent food development, I suggest you keep the chemical load in your foods as low as possible. Our bodies are designed, and have evolved over centuries, to eat sugars found in fruit and vegetables. Even if you do decide to trick your body by giving it artiďŹ cial sweeteners you will still crave the other sugar. Nature will win at the end. You will have a chocolate bar in one hand and a diet coke in the other. Here again I

am speaking from experience. The only way to stop this is to train your taste buds, and your body, into thinking that summer is over and there is no fruit available, by taking out sweets of your diet all together.

When you feel the urge for something sweet, try a piece of fruit.

Back to the consumption of artiďŹ cial sweeteners: after only 70 years of the commercialisation of artiďŹ cial sweetener we are now eating artiďŹ cial sweeteners and other chemicals on a daily basis. Animal and human studies suggested in many cases that sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharine and polyols (sugar alcohols) have been linked to weight gain, headaches, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting. But what concerns me the most is, that there is a serious concern of us developing cancer when ingesting them. A documentary called Time for a Change talks about the effects of diet drinks on your emotional and physical state. Firstly, all commercials make you believe you are going

to be young, beautiful and popular if you drink a diet cola, but do you actually know anyone that has lost weight by starting to drink diet cola? The documentary also mentions that the combination of an artiďŹ cial sweetener with caffeine and soda is highly addictive, and you will find yourself drinking more and more. This is what keeps these products so popular. Here are some tips to avoid artificial sweeteners without gaining weight: • When you feel like something sweet have a small portion of it (this will reduce the binging later on); • Try to include fruit when the urge for sugar arises. The sugar, in combination with vitamins, minerals and ďŹ bre will satisfy your brain, which leaves your sugar craving satisďŹ ed and stimulates your taste buds; • Try to sweeten with organic stevia drops or leaves. This is a natural sweetener which has no known health indications as yet but should also be used in moderation; • Have some water with a spritz of fresh fruit juice and a pinch of salt. This will refresh you and give you adequate hydration; • Have soda water, this will give you a similar sensation as the habitual diet drink, hydrates you and will give you new energy and health. A visit to Italy is forever memorable BLT’s Sharon Vidler and her husband Geoff recently enjoyed a 15-day Cosmopolitan Europe Coach Tour. Here is an excerpt from her travel diary... Day 8:We departed Venice early in the morning at 7.20am, our earliest morning of the coach tour. Along the way we crossed the large lagoon of Venice. There were sticks poking out of the water which marked the mussel pots locations. We went past a large fishing town on the lagoon and then crossed two small rivers before we crossed over the Po River, which is the longest river in Italy at 652km, and it flows from the west of Italy though Turin across to Piacenza and Ferrar then out into the Adriatic Sea. Travelling south across the Po plain into the very heart of the Apennines, dotted with towns and villages perched on the mountain sides. We passed some castles and stopped at the market stalls in Pomposa for some souvenirs. We brought a postcard to send to our grandson. The next stop we made was Assisi where St. Francis was born in 1182. We visited the worldfamous basilica with its beautiful frescoes by Giotto. Driving along towards Assisi you could see it up on the hills, like it was placed there ever so graciously. The road going up to Assisi was very windy and steep and the bus could only go so far so Gaetano (our bus driver) parked and we got off and walked across the road. We walked up a very steep and winding road to the Church of St Francis. On the way up there were little shops all the way along to the top selling all the tourist things. I purchased a book on Assisi as one is not permitted to take photos inside the church. When we walked inside the

church, it was beautiful and so very old. I sat down in one of the pews and said a little prayer. My husband Geoff walked downstairs to have a look. When he came back we sat there for five minutes just taking in the beauty of the church and windows. Outside the church, we took more photos and I sat on a bench while Geoff walked up to the top to take more photos. As we made our way back down the hill, we walked past one shop and the Italian lady was sewing on paper. We had our daughter’s name sewn onto a piece of paper. We arrived in the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome by early evening, took in a guided tour which started in St Peter’s Square, followed by a visit to the Roman Forum and the mighty Colosseum, and then we saw the Trevi Fountain. It was the biggest fountain I have ever seen

in my life, and the most beautiful. Our tourguide Sonia said that if we turned around with our backs to the fountain, and throw in a coin that means you will be back to Rome again. We complied. Sonia told us that they get about 10,000 Euros out of the fountain each week which they give to different charities. We were more than happy to throw more coins in! We sat down for a four-course dinner and were serenaded by a guitar soloist. When he finished singing and playing, he gave all the ladies a rose and a kiss. The walk back to the hotel through the streets of Rome was amazingly beautiful and romantic. We considered the millions of people who have walked through the streets of this ancient city before us. It was a long day, but one which was forever memorable.

Scotty’s AFL round-up WELL, what a week its been at our house. First of all Management comes down with the flu and anyone would think that the world was going to end. She went down like she’d been shot. All of a sudden I’m called upon to undertake all manner of household duties usually done by the magic fairies when I’m not around. The way everyone at home was carrying on you would think it’s important that the shopping gets done, the kids get fed and bathed, the clothes get cleaned and put away, the bills get paid, the dinner gets cooked and the animals stay outside, not in bed with the kids. Well, I usually only have time to eat and go to bed after a hard day at the office so it came as a bit of a shock to me that the magic fairies that usually do all these household chores didn’t show up. Not sure what Management has arranged here, but there is certainly room for improvement. As you would expect however, I handled this change in routine with aplomb and just snuck a day away from the office to catch up on a few loose ends.

The Princess had her science experiment at school that I found myself in charge of. I did my best impersonation of Professor Julius Sumner Miller with the old “Why is it so?” trick with the hard boiled egg and a bottle. The kids were fascinated with the matches and I’m sure the parents wouldn’t have minded about the few extra packets I handed out behind the shelter sheds. The Deputy kept me on my toes, as he appears to have taken inspiration from the newest addition to the household, Azrael the cat. While the cat clearly does not like the male of the species, The Deputy has taken to dressing up as “Cat in Boots” and insists on wearing his sisters knee high boots and an old black Akubra that I found somewhere. The wonderful staff at Cape Kids were most accommodating, but I think he had them bluffed with his Antonio Banderis impersonation and they seemed to miss the sword smuggled in down his boots. Management won’t miss another kitchen cleaver Im sure. So all in all, a successful week, picking up the slack of the others around the

Well then, isn’t it typical of a long weekend that after all this, I come down with the worst case of the Man Flu that you, or anyone else, has ever seen. I have heard of the Man Flu, but this is the first time I think I’ve had a serious case. Management of course laughed it off but she wasn’t laughing for long when she saw the symptoms and heard all about it from me. I lost my voice, I had trouble with my eyes as there was heaps of things I just couldn’t see myself doing for a few days, my nose went red and at one stage there I think my nose started to run. It was about that stage that I passed out from the pain and indignity of it all, and when I came to it was Monday afternoon and I’d basically slept for three days. So that’s how I missed most of the footy this week. However, I was conscious enough to catch a few snippets of the weekend’s round. The Pies and Dogs are only just going and Friday night didn’t surprise me much.

Gee whizz the Suns were stiff to miss out, and you can see that with a few more games under their belt those kids are going to be tough to beat. I’m not sure the Dockers are the real thing - I can’t see them following Lyons’ game plan into the last weeks of the finals. The GWS showed a bit as well, but again the round was punctuated by serious injuries. Broken legs and ankles - it will be the next thing that causes a rule change. Frances came out on top in the tips this week with eight, and gee isn’t it tough at the moment. A heap of eights made my seven look ordinary. I’ve slipped down the ladder with Maccas09, Sophie Smith and Honky Nuts leading the pack. This week I’ve gone for the Hawks, Crows, Suns, Swans, Pies, Bombers to knock off the West Coast, North, Dockers and Blues. Tight finish in Weipa Open KEEN golfers came from far and near to contest the Carpentaria Golf Club’s Weipa Open last weekend. The Goodlinesponsored, 36-hole competition was held over two days, and saw 54 players take to the greens with visitors from Melbourne, Western Australia, Mossman, Gordonvale, Cairns and

Local golfers qualify for state titles WESTERN Cape College recently sent two Weipa representatives to the Cairns Golf Club to compete in the peninsula secondary school golf competition. Although the greens were tough, Steven Wust and Taylor Francisco both qualified to compete in the state championships to be held at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba in July this year. Both students will be selling raffle tickets to fundraise for their trip, so keep an eye out for them and help support these budding young golfers.

Sabrina sets another club swimming record THIRTY Weipa Lightening Swimming Club members attended the Friday, May 4 club night, and although numbers were down due to the long weekend, 32 Personal Bests (PBs) were swum. Swimmer of the week this week was Sabrina Koina, who swam four PBs, including taking six seconds off her 100m butterfly time, to set a new club record in the process. Sabrina also took five seconds off her 200m individual medley time. Close behind Sabrina for swimmers of the week were Katelyn and Tom McCahon who both swam three PBs for the night. Tom knocked four seconds off his 100m medley and 50m butterfly. Donald Tyson had a good night also, swimming three PBs from four swims. Two PBs for the night from Nicho-

las Keough, Kirra Koina, Alissa Koina and Ashlee Moon. One PB was swum by Rachel Brooker, Taylor Francisco, Hannah Gamble, Rebecca Hunter, Ethan Kruckow, Harrison Kruckow, Lisl Mohr, Kristyn Pilkington, Moara Sam, Alyssa Taare and Dane Tyson. Alissa Koina also broke a club record in the girls 9-year old 50m backstroke, with a time if 48.56, just beating the previous record set by Niharika Senapati in 2001. Fishing guru bids farewell to Weipa By Giembra Busmer

WEIPA Bait & Tackle’s Terri (Tacklebox) Garlick is returning to his old fishing grounds in Townsville next week and The Western Cape Bulletin caught up with him for a chat (and a few last words of fishing advice) before he heads south next week to be with family and friends. Terri’s first trip to Weipa was in 1977 when he and some mates decided to make the trek from Townsville to Pennefather for a camping and ďŹ shing trip. Travelling in a 1968 threespeed petrol Cruiser the trip north took ďŹ ve bone-rattling days but according to Terri it was well worth it. “The road was nothing like it is today. It took us ďŹ ve hours to get into Penne and seven hours to get back out, but the ďŹ shing...I had never seen anything like it,â€? Terri recalled. “We didn’t come through

Returning to Townsville to be closer to family Terri says he will miss the people of Weipa. “I’ve made some magniďŹ cent friends in Weipa. It’s such a great town because of the people in the town. The ďŹ shing is good, but the people make it such a nice place to be,â€? he said. But never fear, Terri will be back, with plans already afoot to have a line in the water for the billďŹ sh tournament in October. The Western Cape Bulletin would like to take this opportunity to thank Terri for his entertaining contributions, his ďŹ shing know-how, and his friendship.

The turn-off to Pennefather was marked with the lid of a 13-gallon drum, nailed to a tree with a big “Xâ€? on it.â€? Terri returned to Weipa in 2006 for a ďŹ shing charter with David Newman and Jim Borthwick, and three other mad-keen ďŹ shermen. “There were six of us on that trip and we stayed at ‘the big house’ at the Weipa Caravan Park,â€? Terri said. “It was a three day charter and I was the only one that caught legal barra, and the most ďŹ sh. The others gave me a hard time, but everyone had a really great time.â€? In 2008 Terri sold his Townsville tackle store and decided to settle in the Cape York town he loved to fish, arriving in Weipa on June 30 that year. For the last four years Terri has been offering his sage ďŹ sh-

The victorious Cape United women’s rugby league team contested the North Queensland championships last weekend in Cairns.

THE Cape United women’s rugby league competed in the North Queensland championships in Cairns on May 5 and 6. This very talented team was made up of women from Weipa, Bamaga and Napranum and they certainly represented the Cape with great pride and honour. On day one the Cape girls got off to a slow start, and were defeated in their first game by Mackay, 34-22.

The Cape United girls were way to strong for Cairns in their second game, coming away victors, 36-8. Game three saw the Cape girls play against a big Townsville team which was a curtain raiser to the Northern Pride game. The girls loved the big occasion and totally outplayed the Townsville side. The Cape team won the hearts of the large crowd with a stellar performance to win by 38-16. Totally dominating Three

Rivers in their fourth game the Cape United side recorded a big 36-0 win and secure a grand final berth. Cape United played Mackay in the grand final, and with a barnstorming display ran out big winners 20-4. Star centre Bianca Ambrum was named player of the carnival. A North Queensland Marlins women’s team was selected following the two-day carnival and the Cape girls were rewarded for their success with Florrie-

King Smith, Elsja Mosby, Lucy Bond, Rachael Gordon, and Bianca Ambrum selected to contest the Queensland state titles to be held in Ipswich in June. Alyssa Wray was selected to play for the Barbarians in the state titles. Cape United team manager Sarina Adams said it was a great reward for the all the girls who have worked so hard for this success. – Spilla
