Get ready to rock WCC history teacher, Peter Malone, Jack and Yvette Carter are ready to rock Weipa at the third annual Rock Quiz, to be held later this month. Photo: Giembra Busmer.
IT’S time to dust off your old CDs and brush up on your music trivia, as the third annual Rock Quiz is set to test your musical knowledge later this month. This year’s quiz has a 1970’s and ‘80s theme so expect plenty of disco, rock and heavy metal questions from quiz master, Yvette Carter.
“There will be name that tune, name the artist, and complete the rest of the line questions throughout the eight rounds of the quiz, as well as plenty of musical games to be played between rounds,” Yvette said. This year’s Rock Quiz is a fundraiser for the Western Cape College Year 11 and 12 ancient history students who are
planning a European study tour during the September/October holidays this year. History teacher Peter Malone said the trip was a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for the students. “During Years 11 and 12 the students study ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt so the chance to actually visit some of the
historical sites they learn about will be an invaluable experience,” Peter said. Prizes in this year’s quiz are as big as the bad hair of the ‘80s and include a Cairns weekend getaway for two, thanks to Qantaslink and Mercure Harbourside Cairns. Music enthusiasts can either purchase single tickets or get
together with other music buffs and book a table. Tickets are $20 a head which includes nibbles, and are available from Weipa 4WD Fishing & Camping Supplies, or can be purchased at the door on the night. The Rock Quiz will be held at the Carpentaria Golf Club on Saturday, May 26 from 6.30pm for a 7pm sharp start.

Cape York World Heritage listing stalled UNESCO (United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) has confirmed a tentative World Heritage listing for large areas of Cape York is in doubt after the Federal Government missed an international deadline, it was reported in southern press this week. The failure to meet this important deadline means that there is no further opportunity for Australia to submit a nomination for consideration by the World Heritage committee in June-July 2013. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch has welcomed news, saying it was a “blessing in disguise for Cape landowners, businesspeople and traditional owners, who were already over-burdened with excessive legislation, red and green tape. “The current Federal Government is obsessed with an agenda of totally shutting the Cape down to any development at all, he said. “They have no understanding of the fact that people on the Cape have as much, if not more, interest than anybody else in ensuring that development is sustainable and preserves the

of Cyclone IT is completely untrue that we in the Department have accidentally missed the last date for applications to turn Cape York into a U N E S C O Wo r l d Heritage area. This unpleasant rumour comes from the many opponents of progress who want to see the application fail. Let me lay out the true situation right here. The Department has laboured

The only extension to the deadline that is permitted by the World Heritage committee is in the case of an ‘emergency’ submission, which happens rarely and only when there is an ascertained threat to the site. Mr Entsch said locals could breathe a sigh of relief as there was “no way in the world that environmentalists could
over several years to produce two-and-a-half shipping containers of documentation demonstrating that Cape York is a pretty place. It is also uninhabited, and the few people who do live there are looking forward to their new status as exhibits in the UNESCO-sponsored Cape York Zoo Experience. They are eagerly waiting to move to their new houses in Chillagoe, where the Southern Centre of the Experience will be built. Here the ex-residents of Cape York will run a museum

From here, tourists will also be able to join the viewing flights that will take them over the Cape, keeping to a high enough altitude to avoid frightening the birds and bats. We anticipate vast savings in Government expenditure by closing the roads and concentrating the population in Chillagoe, some of which will be ploughed

Mr Entsch asked. “I’ll be making sure that questions are asked at the upcoming Senate Estimates as to the costs to date – this money could have been much more effectively spent on improving road, health or social infrastructure on Cape York. The former Queensland State Government was responsible for obtaining traditional owner consent, however the process was derailed when leaders such as Cape York Land Council chair Richie Ah Mat withdrew, saying they would not negotiate until Wild Rivers legislation was scrapped. While the new LNP government supports World Heritage listing for “suitable areas of the Cape, Environment Minister Andrew Powell has said that Indigenous consultation was essential, and could not be hurried. “I am in full agreement with Mr Powell, and I know that the new Member for Cook, David Kempton, is also fully aware of the concerns relating to blanket World Heritage listing of the Cape, The Northern Centre of the Experience, located in a disused mine dump outside Weipa, will be a hands-on experience of various ancient mining techniques and ways of life. We hope to attract a large number of Chinese visitors who will fly in to re-live the lives of their ancestors who came to Queensland in the 19th century in search of gold and other metals. We hope the money these tourists bring will defray the
costs of the administrative unit to be set up here in Brisbane. The Department has worked very hard for the few, unfortunate people stranded in Cape York at present, and you can be sure that UNESCO now understands the local importance of our various long week-ends. They are being much more culturally sensitive about deadlines, and accept that the application should be with them later this year. Or possibly next year. Queensland’s Indigenous health shame
IGNORANCE is no excuse when it comes to Indigenous health in Queensland, according to the State’s peak medical body, and it isn’t just governments that have a role in helping. AMA Queensland president Dr Richard Kidd last week wrapped up an extensive tour of many of Queensland’s Indigenous health facilities with a visit to the Wuchopperen Health Service in Cairns. Dr Kidd and AMAQ president-elect Dr Alex Markwell were given a warts-and-all look at the issues during the tour conducted by Queensland’s first Indigenous doctor, Noel Hayman. Dr Kidd said Queensland could never really consider itself a modern society until such time as the health gap between
dictate from Brisbane what is required in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities, he said. Dr Noel Hayman said while health infrastructure has improved markedly in remote communities, it is vital to get more Indigenous Australians practising medicine in a primary health setting. “When I grew up all our heroes were sports people. Sports bodies recognised the importance of developing talents such as Cathy Freeman and Matty Bowen at a young age. We need to do the same for Indigenous children with the potential to be doctors and nurses, Dr Hayman said.
“
Improving Indigenous access to all health services is vital in closing the gap in Indigenous health

Indigenous and non-Indigenous Queenslanders is closed. “The out of sight, out of mind excuse has gone on too long. It will be to our everlasting shame if we don’t act to bridge this gap. In Queensland, the life expectancy gap is estimated at 10.4 years for men and 8.9 years for women, Dr Kidd said. “The Federal Budget has sparked much talk about cost of living pressures and helping battlers but Indigenous Australians are the ultimate battlers and it is their health which is suffering. “In this region, there are children as young as eight with diabetes. If this health injustice isn’t addressed, I can’t see the gap closing any further but in fact widening again. “We need to ensure basic fruit and vegetables are affordable in all communities. Dr Kidd said that 80 per cent of the health gap can be attributed to six leading drivers - cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, cancers, trauma and mental disorders - most of which are treatable in a primary health setting. “We need to think outside the square when dealing with Indigenous health. After talking to many community leaders, it is clear to me that you can’t
– Dr Richard Kidd
“At present there are several scholarships offered to Indigenous people to become doctors and nurses but those receiving scholarship funds have their Abstudy payments reduced.
“It means these young Australians must work full-time to live away from home in a foreign environment as well as study very challenging courses. “A simple solution would be to keep Abstudy payments at the same level whether you have a scholarship or not.â€? Dr Kidd said the transition to community-controlled health care is a new beginning for indigenous health but support and training must also be given to mainstream health services to attract and treat Indigenous patients. “This issue must continue to be a priority. Improving Indigenous access to all health services is vital in closing the gap in Indigenous health,â€? Dr Kidd said. During the recent State election campaign, AMA Queensland identified several other solutions to help close the gap. These included: • Increased funding for Aboriginal community-controlled health centres and services • Strengthen the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and medical workforce • Establish health services capable of bridging the gap by 2018 • Better integration of primary care services within local communities.
Act as one against domestic and family violence MAY is traditionally the month where there is a concerted effort to bring information and knowledge to the wider community about the incidence of domestic and family violence, with a view to reducing and eventually eliminating violence against women and children. Domestic and family violence is when one person in a relationship
uses abuse or violence to maintain power and control over the other person. It can affect people of all genders, ages, cultures, religions and sexual preferences. It can include physical abuse, damaging property, sexual abuse, financial control, verbal abuse or threatening to do any of these things. The result is that the
person subjected to the violence lives in fear and intimidation. This violence often takes place ‘behind closed doors’ and in the past was seen very much as a private family matter that society should not get involved with. This is definitely not the case. Violence against another person is a crime whether it is in the
streets or in our homes. If you know of someone around you who is in a violent relationship, give them your support, don’t judge or blame them. If there is a serious incident of violence and you feel someone is in immediate danger call 000. Let’s take this month to be more aware of what is going on around
us, to protect, support and to value the women and children in our lives. You can be the one to make a difference. If you need assistance or know someone who does, call the free Women’s Helpline 1800 811 811 or free Men’s Helpline 1800 600 636. Local government elections declared THE Electoral Commission of Queensland has set a new date for a Cape York Aboriginal community’s mayoral election. The Aurukun mayoral election was postponed last month, after one of the candidates, incumbent Tahpich Pootchemunka, died suddenly. A funeral was held for Mr Pootchemunka last Friday. The mayoral poll will now be held on Saturday, June 16. Election results for councillors in Aurukun and other local government areas across the State were declared this week and the elected candidates from Western Cape York councils are below. Croc sighting at Vyces Crossing THE Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) yesterday received a report of a crocodile seen at Vyces Crossing, approximately 15km north of Weipa, on May 13, reports EHP Director Wildlife, Dr Ashley Bruce. The crocodile, estimated at between two and two-and-a-half metres in length, was seen at a popular swimming hole. It was reported seen at the surface of the pool, and then it submerged. It was reported as showing no aggressive behaviour. Vyces Crossing flows into Andoon Creek, which flows into Mission River and these areas are all well known crocodile habitat. The land concerned is leased by Rio Tinto, and this company has erected a temporary “recent crocodile sighting” sign at the site. Rangers from the department will continue to monitor the situation. EHP investigates all crocodile reports it receives and sightings can be reported to the department at any time on 1300 130 372. Members of the public are asked to be Crocwise in known crocodile country. Further information on crocodiles and being Crocwise is available on EHP’s website at www. ehp.qld.gov.au.
The future looks bright for Weipa Medical Centre WEIPA residents can breathe a little easier after learning that their local medical centre will remain open for the next six months, with plans underway to lock in a new private service provider after that date. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch raised concerns last month that the private Weipa Medical Clinic may be closed down after trading for some years at a loss, with the community potentially losing two experienced family doctors. “Once I became aware that the closure was a reality, I contacted the new state Health Minister Lawrence Springborg to stress the seriousness of the situation and ask that something be done to ensure that the service wasn’t lost,” Mr Entsch said. At the request of the newly-elected chair of the WTA, Peter McCulkin, Mr Entsch spoke last week with the CEO of the Cape York Health Service District, Susan Taylor, to get an update. “I was pleased to hear that the future of the private clinic is looking much
brighter,” Mr Entsch said. “While one of the doctors has decided to move on for personal reasons, Queensland Health has committed to fully funding the other doctor, and will also pay for a locum for the next six months, a doctor who I understand is known to the community.” Queensland Health has also committed to covering the cost of the private health centre’s operations for the next six months and is facilitating negotiations with a private operator who is “very interested” in establishing themselves in Weipa and taking over. “This is a very good result,” Mr Entsch said. “I was quite worried about the loss of continuation of service, and it seemed such a waste to lose a committed doctor who wanted to be there. “I’d like to compliment Queensland Health on the fact that they have worked very hard and proactively to find a solution here. “Both David Kempton and I, as well as Minister Springborg, will be keeping a very close eye on the situation to
ensure we get an outcome that is in the best interests of the community.” Queensland Health has been in discussions with Rio Tinto Alcan regarding the mining company’s commitment to provide a level of ongoing financial support to the centre. Additionally, Mr Entsch is arranging a meeting with Queensland Health when he is next in Weipa to discuss the impact of Scherger Immigration and Detention Centre on the provision of health services. “I’ll be working with David Kempton and the Health Centre to secure additional resources from the Federal Government,” he explained. “We must ensure that the level of service provision to Western Cape residents is not compromised by the significant additional demands placed on the service by Scherger. “I’ll be supporting any efforts by the centre, and new Member for Cook David Kempton, in getting a commitment for this extra financial support.”
Classic fun run for Mother’s Day MORE than 130 people, young and old, with strollers or dogs, or simply decked out in runners and pink accessories, descended on the Weipa Swimming Pool parking area on Sunday morning for the second Weipa Mother’s Day Classic. The five kilometre run or two kilometre walk was a major fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and over $2000 was raised in registrations, merchandise and donations on the morning. Local animal shelter CAPS provided a barbecue breakfast following the Classic which raised much needed funds for this worthy local group.
Mother’s Day Classic organiser, Bianca Graham said the postie bike and the volunteers in green did a fantastic job ensuring nobody got lost and everyone returned to enjoy the breakfast. “I would like to thank all the volunteers who ensured everyone stayed safe, and Weipa Woolworths for their voucher donation.” Bianca said. “Once again I was blown away by the community spirit here in Weipa. To see a flood of pink walking and running around our streets, raising money for this great cause, was fantastic.” “Thank you to everyone who attended -it’s the people that make an event a great event.”

Work shadowing continues for Work Start team THE Indigenous PathWays Solutions Work Start team have continued work shadowing this week with Rio Tinto at the beneficiation plant, the ship loader and on heavy equipment. Participants have also continued to work shadow with other employers such as NHDS. Some of the IPS WSP program participants have expressed interest in obtaining a traineeship hosted by Rio Tinto Marine. RTM specialist Krysten Roberts and the Captain and crew of the RTM vessel Piiramu were very generous in giving their time to allow some IPS team members the opportunity of touring the vessel and having their questions answered.

students to musical theatre and opera traditions, encouraging them to explore their heritage through music and visual arts. The aim of the Vocal Threads program is to build the confidence and self-esteem of Indigenous students by using creative activities which encourage them to work together in a team environment, and motivate them to express themselves artistically. The students will learn about singing techniques, movement and stage direction. On Monday and Tuesday, the workshop will be held at ‘the House on the Hill’ and for the remainder of the week it will be at the College Campus. The week-long residency will culminate in a final presentation by the students and Vocal Threads artists which will also be at the College Campus on
Friday, May 25 from 7 to 8pm to which family, friends and the local community are invited to attend. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa general manager operations, Jo-Anne Scarini, said Vocal Threads has the potential to leave a lasting impact on students. “Under the guidance of talented professionals, Vocal Threads will introduce students to musical theatre and encourage them to explore their own heritage through music, visual arts and dance, Jo-Anne said. “After a week of culturally engaging and vibrant workshops, there will be a spectacular final performance open to members of the community, which will give many students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “Rio Tinto is proud to team
up with Opera Queensland to help bring these types of opportunities to the communities in which we operate. For schools, Vocal Threads promotes a learning environment that supports the value of the arts in education. The program also seeks to raise the profile of young people within the community. Opera Queensland piloted Vocal Threads in 2009 delivering the program to 25 Indigenous students at Atherton State High School. The program received a tremendous response from the students and teachers alike – for many it was a life-changing experience. In 2011, the program was presented at Wilcannia Central School, Walgett Community College and Western Cape College Weipa.

QuickSmart Weipa pilot an Australian first In a partnership between Community Enterprises Australia (CEA), the CDEP provider for the region, and the Western Cape RPA, a new and innovative approach to literacy and numeracy training was piloted over the past two weeks in Weipa... POOR literacy and numeracy standards severely affect ongoing educational achievements and future work and life choices of thousands of people in Australia. It is one of the key challenges in the national Closing the Gap initiative with significant disadvantages still facing Indigenous Australians. These statistics apply equally to the Western Cape region. The Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreement (WCRPA) signatories made addressing this issue a priority in its recently finalised Strategic Plan. In a first for Queensland, the QuickSmart program was recently delivered at a two-day course at the Western Cape College to 14 future trainers, to be able to reach not only school age students, but adult learners, job seekers and employees who want to build careers.
QuickSmart was devised by academics at the University of New England’s National Centre for Science, Information and Communication Technology, and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR). The program has been trialled in over 600 schools and independently assessed as having up to two years or more of accelerated academic learning growth after 30 weeks of the program. Weipa is the first site in Australia where the program has been provided to trainers for adult literacy as well as students. The program is also being trialled elsewhere in the prison system. QuickSmart is a fun and adaptable teaching program; it can be altered to include functional work literacy, cultural and social differences and can be made relevant
QuickSmart participants from the Western Cape College, PPTS, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa and CEA with SiMERR trainers and the WCRPA Coordinator.
to the student lifestyles and surroundings. It is intensive with one trainer to two or three students, and has an extensive array of tools (cards, books and computers). CEA were keen to have staff members trained to provide literacy and numeracy to their participants as part of their training for employment. The WCRPA offered the training to the Western Cape College to ensure that students, as the future employees in the region, had the best chances of success. Positive
Pathways to Success (PPTS) would take the training to their client group many of whom are young job seekers. Rio Tinto Alcan sent two trainers to observe the program for possible delivery to Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s trainees. The trainers had two full days of intensive training with a follow up of a week’s support in this first round. SiMERR will send the trainers back for two more rounds of intensive training and assessment of the program roll-out. It is expected that through the
various entities’ trainers, the program will be disseminated through the wider community over the next two to three years. The WCRPA was provided with financial support from the Minerals Council of Australia to bring Quicksmart into the region. The WCRPA is working with CEA and JSAs to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in this region can benefit from relevant training and employment and economic opportunities here. QuickSmart is just the start.

THIS ongoing, fortnightly update provides myself, and the Weipa Town Authority team, with the opportunity to keep the regular Western Cape Bulletin readers abreast of our deliberations, and subsequent decisions affecting our town. Again, congratulations to the team on their success at the recent elections, with ‘Stretch’ Noonan elected Deputy Chairman (Works and Engineering Chair), Brooke Barton Chair of the Communities and Social Committee, Trevor Snodgrass Chair for Planning and Development, Troy McNamara Chair for Administration and Finance, with Ben Laidlaw filling a ‘project’ role for Economic Development. This will be your team for the next four years and if there are any issues or suggestions individually for the Members please feel free to contact them directly. Contact details will be available on the WTA web site. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Warren Entsch, our local Federal Member, who was able to provide the WTA with a very concise update on the medical services here in town, given the rumour mill that has circulated for the past four or five weeks. It will be covered in more detail elsewhere in this edition I am sure, but Warren assures us that Queensland Health are to be congratulated for picking up the GP services for the next six-month period while negotiations continue with a potential alternate service provider. I have been advised that there will be no effect to the services which

have been delivered by Donna and her excellent team for the past few years. The redevelopment of Andoom Oval is a priority for WTA in the coming months and we are seeking public comment on the draft plan now available at Town Office. If you or your family are involved in sport or community events on Andoom Oval please take the time to provide your feedback. We’ve had some very fruitful discussions with Rio Tinto in relation to the continuing issues with water into Evans Landing. I am happy to advise that Jo-Anne Scarini (General Manager) has her team working on fully funded refurbishment to the infrastructure. This is very good news for the business owners and residents in Evans Landing, while also being equally good news for the ratepayers that have been paying for tedious, ongoing repairs. This is a good example of the rapport that exists between the Town Authority and Rio Tinto. Thanks Jo-Anne. The WTA is now in budget mode, with us all on a very steep learning curve, as we prioritise expenditure for the coming financial year. We hope to announce the full budget in late June/ early July. The public gallery is open for all the WTA monthly meetings; please feel free to check the dates on our website: www.weipatownoffice.com – Peter McCulkin, Weipa Town Authority Chairman

WE go on now to read Mark Ch 12 verses 18-27 and we see that the other main party of Jewish spiritual leaders, lined up to have their go at trying to trap Jesus. These people were the Sadducee, and they did not believe in the resurrection of the dead, in life after death. That’s probably why they were always sad you see. (joke). They tried to trap Jesus in the following way. In the law of Moses, if a married brother dies without children,
then his brother was to go with his wife and give her a child so his (the dead brother) name can carry on. This was normal practice for the Jews. They made up this very unlikely story of seven brothers marrying the same woman after each had died and when the last brother died she remained without a child, and then she died. If people come back to life after dying, whose wife was she going to be? As you can see, the Lord pointed out that there will be
no such practises like marriage in heaven, because feelings such as sexual attraction will be no more, as the risen shall be like angels. The laws of Israel apply only to this life and not the next one. Earthly bodies are so different to heavenly bodies in that they serve a different purpose. (See Genesis Ch 1 vs 27-28). In John Ch 11 v 25 Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life…” More on this next week. Rev Michael Connolly

Good Life with Jeany Schall
What is fascia? DURING my latest trip to Sydney to attend a fitness conference, “fasciaâ€? was what every other body movement expert was talking about, particularly in reference to back pain and/or tissue damage with problems healing. Fascia is the 3D connective tissue system that surrounds all organs, muscles, bones and nerve ďŹ bres. When you prepare a chicken breast to cook, you sometimes see a very thin white layer of strong tissue surrounding it. That is fascia. It wraps around your tissue like a stocking and you ďŹ nd fascia from feet to ďŹ ngertips, and front to back. It is especially concentrated under the soles of our feet, hands and skull. The deep fascia is much stronger covering muscle tissue which keeps the muscle tissue divided and protected. Sometimes you may find that the fascia experiences tightness rather than the
muscle tissue and this is causing pain. Have you had a problem with your knee before, then it turned into a back problem, and all of a sudden you are almost incapable of moving? This can be caused by numerous things such as compensation, tight muscles and others, but latest research is putting a lot more light into connective tissue like fascia. Some may refer to it as the extra-cellular matrix which incorporates water, collagen elastin and reticulin. Water makes up the most part of it though. To keep your fascia elastic and healthy drink lots of fresh, clear water and move (especially stretching) and massage your fascia. There are simple tools you can use to assist this, like rolling your muscle tissue over a tennis ball, a foam roller or a pool noodle. This will release the fascia and it will function properly. I had a chance to catch up with some of my friends from Tonia’s dog obedience classes, and to make new K9 friends before we took off on the two kilometre walk. Following the walk, the wonderful people from CAPS cooked up a barbecue breakfast, and Crispy and I really enjoyed our sausages on bread. It was a wonderful way to start the day! Speaking of dog obedience classes, I’m really enjoying the classes, although my mum and

PAWS UP to the organisers of the Weipa Mother’s Day Classic which was held on Sunday morning. Our whole family (including my K9 mum Crispy) participated in the walk, which my mum said was a fundraiser for breast cancer research.
Fascia, or the extracellular matrix, is also believed to hold on to physical memories such as physical traumas, but also emotional tension and imbalances in nutritional supply. This is why many people hold a lot of tension in the fascia and muscles, which may lead to an emotional release while or after a massage and/or a good yoga or stretching class. T h e re i s m u c h m o re research to be done in this particular ďŹ eld so stay updated, now that you know that your all your organs, muscles and bones are surrounded by the fascia. You can start today releasing your fascia by stretching your feet (see picture below) or give yourself a foot massage by rolling a tennis ball under your feet. You will be amazed how free, stretched and happy your feet feel afterwards. Since fascia is connected from head to toe it may release a lot more than only your feet. There are many different exercises you can do on a foam roller, massage ball or tube. Go out and explore what you can do to release.

A business deal may be in putt in jeopardy opardy if you push for too hard a bargain. The other person is not going to compromise any further. Romance. A chance meeting in a very unromantic place may surprise you. You will need to be patient in order to build up a serious relationship with this person, however.
TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) A flexible approach will help you to get what you want. Don’t let other people’s standards prevent you from looking at a long-standing problem from a fresh angle. Romance. Your partner might appreciate a few more compliments. A powerful aspect to Venus later in the month will give you a chance to express your feelings more openly.
GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)
FOR KIDS
Try to calm down a little! If you are not careful, you will waste a lot of energy just rushing around, without actually getting much done. A minor accident later in the week may slow you down. Romance. Your partner has much more insight into your needs than you probably realise. Trust them to make the right decision on your behalf.
CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) A seemingly intractable disagreement between family members will finally be resolved. Forgiveness will be needed on both sides. Romance. Your relationship will soon be in better shape than it has been for some time. A romantic trip sometime this week will go especially well.
LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) You may be a little less conscientious about your work than you are normally. This would be a good time to take a break. Romance. Your feelings for a new admirer may be much more romantic than you realise. Time spent alone together will help you to understand each other’s emotions a lot more clearly than before.
VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) A small concession will help you to get what you are after. Don’t be afraid to give up something of value. Romance. You will be seeing a lot more of a friend whom you were close to in the past. This person has changed in several ways since you last saw them, but still likes you as much as they did before.
FINDWORD No. 98 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA
LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Chores will appear out of nowhere this week! Unfortunately there is a lot more to be done than meets the eye. Romance. A friend who wants to get to know your partner could stir up jealousies, possibly without realising it. There will be no need to worry.
SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd) Your psychic abilities will be much more powerful than usual this week. You will be able to see events in a very different way. Romance. A surprise comment from a long-standing admirer will cheer you up. A phone call from this person later in the week will help to cement your relationship.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au
MUDDY RIVER
A close friend may have some useful ideas about what you should do next. Listen to what they have to say, but make up your own mind. Romance. You may be feeling quite frisky this week. Don’t be surprised if your partner is rather slow to respond. A romantic get-away later in the week will put you both in the right mood.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) You are being bossed around too much at the moment. Try to find a way of making yourself a little more independent. Romance. This should be a very good week for romantic adventures. You will regret it if you do anything sneaky, however.
AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)
QUOTE OF THE DAY Happiness makes up in height for what it lacks in length. – Robert Frost
SOLUTIONS No. 98
You will be held accountable for your actions and must make sure that the decisions which you make are the best ones for everyone concerned. Don’t allow a friend to knock you off course with bad advice. Romance. Things will go much more smoothly if you calm down a bit. You may also have to be quite patient. A meeting which doesn’t work out may disappoint you.
PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) A favourable aspect to Mercury later in the week will help you to communicate your feelings clearly to the people around you. Don’t take “no” for an answer: you have some good ideas and must push through until your colleagues accept them. Romance. Your partner will have a pleasant surprise in store for you! A recent misunderstanding should soon be behind you, but you will have to uncover the reasons why it happened in the first place.

BYE Eels, Knights, Raiders, Storm, Broncos and Titans
Superstars come to life in big games I JUST love it when our NRL superstars lift for big games. These great players are worth every cent they get and deserve every allocade they receive. There is no secret when the Cowboys are at their best when Jonathon Thurston is just tormenting his opposition. Paul Gallen and Todd Carney are enlarging the Sharks bite more everyday with their great leadership. The big 3 of the Storm Slater, Smith and Cronk well all I can say is that they are such quality players every NRL coach must envy the Storm set up. With State of Origin only seven days away the superstars have been in great form for their respective clubs and it just shows once again that rugby league is the greatest game of all. Round 10 produced some interesting results , it all started on Friday night when Manly scored a last minute win over the mighty Broncos and the Titans upset the highly fancied Bulldogs. Super Saturday saw a inspiring Jonathon Thurston guide his side around with expertise and were too good for a injury
riddled Knights team. The Warriors just overcome a fast improving Roosters with some entertaining footy being played. The Raiders and Eels played a game where defence was put on the backburners with the Raiders surviving an Eels comeback to win 40-34. The game of the round was between the Sharks and the Storm and it certainly did live up to expectation with the Sharks winning in a thriller 12-10. A field goal by Coote in extra time on Monday night sealed the two points for the Panthers and gives them a four point buffer from cellar dwellers the Eels. Round 11 this week will be a split round due to the State of Origin which will see the Eels, Knights, Broncos, Raiders, Storm and Titans all having the week off. However there are still some cracking games to be played and it all starts on Friday night with the Tigers and Warriors going into battle. Super Saturday will see the Cowboys and Panthers play in Townsville and the Cowboys will be without Thurston so it will be a test for the North Queenslanders. Sunday will see two games with the
Scotty’s AFL round-up Life is full of surprises isn’t it? Without surprises I think we would become complacent with our lot in life and resign ourselves to the fact that each day would bring a mundane impersonation of the day before, and we would end up in a robot-like trance as we meandered aimlessly and listlessly through the years. Thankfully, real life is nothing like that, and we don’t have time to get used to what we are up to before the next surprise is upon us, and we are thrust into the unknown yet again, trying to make sense of things and keep ourselves from being overcome with exhaustion from trying to keep up with all the surprises. In such a surprising world, there can be great satisfaction taken from being the instigator of a really good surprise. As those who took part in the Mothers Day Classic Fun Run on Sunday morning will attest, the Three Legged Houdini took great satisfaction in depositing a steamy brown surprise in the middle of the footpath just after the start of the fun run. The look on her face as she completed the execution of the surprise was one quite opposite to the look on the faces of
a few unlucky runners as they narrowly avoided the requirement to get busy with the scrubbing brush and the Glen 20 when they got home. Once it dawned on me that I’d forgotten the poop bag and that I’d have to stand guard over the odour-emitting creation I was really appreciating the impact of a surprise. Management was also surprised when we completed the fun run and noticed that I’d lost The Deputy on my travels. He didn’t seem surprised, and totally backed up my version of events as he was wheeled over the finish line by a somewhat surprised defacto family. Management loves a good surprise, just like the next person in charge, but sometimes she seems to be surprised at the same thing over and over again. For instance, each Friday night she emits a sound of what has to sometimes be called astonishment (a sign of a really effective surprise) when I tell her that yes, I do intend to watch the Cats on the tele this weekend. You’d think after almost 10 years together this would no longer cause any

Roosters travelling to Brookvale oval to take on the Sea Eagles while the Dragons and the Rabbitohs will battle it out on the Southern beaches. Monday night footy should see another thriller with the Bulldogs and Sharks going into war.

ROUND 8 – Fri, May 18 - Sun, May 20 FRI, MAY 18 Collingwood v Geelong @ MCG SAT, MAY 19 Port Adelaide v North Melbourne @ AAMI Stadium Hawthorn v Fremantle @ Aurora Stadium Sydney v Melbourne @ SCG Western Bulldogs v Gold Coast @ TIO Stadium Essendon v Richmond @ MCG SUN, MAY 20 Brisbane v GWS @ Gabba Carlton v Adelaide @ Etihad Stadium West Coast v St Kilda @ Patersons Stadium surprised-like reaction, but no, it works every week. Also of note was her realisation, and subsequent animated surprise, when I stuck a bit of Saturday Night Fever on the household juke box, and started carving up the lounge room as I did the housework to the falsetto tones of the brothers Gibb. She even went as far as to say that my fervour for 70’s disco was the sort of information I should have disclosed to her prior to popping the question, and that she might have taken this information onboard when determining if she was prepared to enter into holy matrimony for the remainder of her functioning lifetime. I responded by suggesting that its exactly that sort of surprise that you need to wheel out every now and then throughout the phases of marriage. and that it helps keep things up-vibe and interesting. I wasn’t surprised to be told that if I put this story in the paper, and announced that I liked 70’s disco, I’d lose readers, Stretch and G would take exception, and Management would crack down on any out-of-plan behaviour. We’ll see how it ends up.
The games were a bit interesting this week with a few very hard to pick. What a big weekend for the boys at GWS and you had to be excited for them when they came home in the last quarter. It was a bad weekend for footy in Queensland though, with both teams going down and things looking ordinary. The Tigers roared and I can’t wait now until Saturday night to see them take on the Bombers at the G in front of what should be an 80k plus crowd. I’ll be there this week to see it first hand, as well as the Friday night blockbuster between the Cats and the Pies. I hope the boys pull up their socks after the insipid performance against a very good Crows outfit. This week I’m tipping the Pies, Hawks, Swannies, Doggies, Bombers, Lions, Blue Baggers and the Weagles. The tipping comp is tight with Honkey Nuts skipping away with the two-game lead. Keep up the good work and chat next week with a bit of a report on the trip to Melbourne. Happy tipping, see you next week. Scotty

AN exciting live entertainment line-up at the 2012Weipa Fishing Classic is set to make this year’s event one to remember. The star of the 2011 Weipa Fishing Classic, Shandell, is back by popular demand and will be taking the stage on Friday and Saturday nights of the Classic.
One of Australia’s most aspiring singer/songwriters, Shandell has been astounding audiences across the country with her strong, unique, rustic voice and is sure to again thrill Weipa audiences with her brand of country, indie rock. Roots and rock musician, Ryan Giles, will also
be performing at the 2012 Weipa Fishing Classic, with live shows on Saturday and Sunday nights. An independent singer/ songwriter from South East Queensland, Ryan is set to entertain Weipa Fishing Classic audiences with his folk-inspired pop music, with a twist of country.
Families enjoy Mother’s Day at Golfies SUNDAY was a beautiful cool morning and there was a great turnout at the Carpentaria Golf Club for Mother’s Day. Golf is a sport the whole family can be involved in and it is wonderful to see so many juniors choosing golf as their sport. A special thank you to to Viv Dick from Dawnies for putting on the spread for the mothers, Dawnies and juniors. Thanks also to Dave Edwards for the cooking, and the Carpentaria Golf Club for its continued support of the juniors. This year Duane Singleton has coaches for the juniors so thank you to Brett Elms and Derek Tata for your involvement. Next Tuesday is training at 4.30pm. Results from this week’s rounds are: A grade - Taylor Francisco, Maddison Edward; B grade - Aaron Singleton, Ned Brown; C grade - Ebony Potter, Mackenize Elms; C4 - Kaiden Williams, Troy Fay. See you next Sunday - and don’t forget your hats, sunscreen, water bottles and parents. – Lisa Francisco
Add a smooth strumming guitar and a few crafty harmonica licks and it sounds like Ryan will get toes tapping. Entertainment over the long weekend event will also be provided by local entertainers including local bands, vocalists, gymnastics, school groups and the
ever popular tug-of-war. Tickets to this year’s Weipa Fishing Classic will be on sale from this Saturday, and each Saturday up to the event, from the Woolworths car park and inside the shopping centre. Tickets will also be available during the week at Weipa Furniture and Electri-

Weipa dirt karts hit the track UU from page 1
It didn’t stop there, as they continued the rivalry for the rest of the night. Believe me these two are worth the drive to the raceway to watch. In the KT heavies, it was our previous column pin-up boy Troy Batterham who topped the table for the night with four wins on the night, and currently leads Justin Hyytinen and Mick Brooker after round one. These guys also put on some very close racing for the night, and I reckon this will be very tight by the end of the three rounds. Two karts contested the 125ccs, with Howard Waratini proving the stronger of the two, after Tony Smith broke down during the first race. Overall, the Weipa Dirt Kart Club
should be proud of their efforts in presenting this fine product to the community. It is the first time they have had a sponsored race meeting and it’s exciting to welcome the Enzed Hose Doctor on board with the Weipa Dirt Kart club. For those of you who missed out, round two of the Enzed Hose Doctor Top End Dirt Kart Series will return on Saturday, May 23, 2012, which is less than two weeks away so it’s not long to wait. We do appreciate all those who came out to watch and we hope you come back and bring more people with you - and remember it’s free to get in. Until then, “keep living the dream... if not, buy a dirt kart, it does the same thing.

ON Friday, May 11, 24 Weipa Lightening Swimming Club members attended the club night, with 21 Personal Bests (PBs) swum, along with another five club records broken. Swimmer of the week was Kirra Koina, who swam five PBs from five swims, including taking nearly four seconds off her individual medley, and three seconds off her 50m butterfly time. Close behind Kirra for swimmers of the week were Alissa and Sabrina Koina, who both swam four PBs for the night. Alissa broke four club records in the process, two of her own and two others previously held by Sharna Mitton (1995) for the 50m breastroke and 50m butterfly. Sabrina also broke a club record for the 50m butterfly, which was previously held by Kirstie Buchholz and set in 2002. Two PBs for the night from Moara Sam, including taking two seconds off her butterfly time. One PB swum by Taylor Francisco, Tom McCahon, Alex McInnes, Ashlee Moon, Katie Pilkington and Dylan Roberts. Other notable PBs included Tom McCahon,

who knocked a huge six seconds off his 50m butterfly, and Katie Pilkington who took nine seconds off her 25m breastroke. See you all next club night, Friday, May 18, which will be the last club night for the season. Please bring a plate for dessert. For any enquiries, please call Wade on 4069 7376 or 4069 8935.
Tight rounds in weekend’s golf events LAST Saturday a single stroke event, sponsored by Reg Moore, was played at the Carpentaria Golf Club. The winner, with a 71 nett, was Jess Stecko and Sandy Nelson was runner-up, with a 72 nett. The NTPs went to Neil Kneebone and Mick Benjak. Sunday’s event was a 4BBB stableford sponsored by Mick Fleming from Weipa Taxis. The winners were Max Kofe
and Derek Tata with 47 points, from Helen Withers and Wendy Grainger with 45 points. The NTPs went to Taylor Francisco, Mick Benjak and Shane Hearps. Thank you Reg and Mick for your sponsorship. This weekend’s events will be a single stableford, sponsored by Benny Lawton on Saturday, and on Sunday a single stroke, sponsored by Jess Stecko and Paul Chambers will
be played. Club championships are coming up on May 25 and 26, and June 2 and 3. Those players who are on shift can play their rounds in the morning of the championship round. All rounds must be played on the day of that round, and the group must consist of at least two full members. Good golfing Wendy Grainger, Club Captain

SOCCER kicked off again last Saturday and there was some excellent team ball-passing skills on display leading to some classic goals. Thank you to the referees and parent helpers who make the games possible with their support and enthusiasm. Squirts All players had a great run at the beginning. Jay had a good run, until Isaac was able to get it from him. Isacc ran the whole field himself before the ball was kicked back the other way, just before the goal. Darius had a good kick towards his goal and Tai had a good kick-off. Tai scored a good goal after a half-field dash himself, and Darius and Isaac had a good contest for the ball. The second half saw Harry have a good kick-off. Good run and kick towards goal by Darius but just missed. Jet had a running kick-off and Isaac had a shot at goal but just missed. Stiff competition in this week’s squash fixtures THREE matches to go before semi-ďŹ nals begin in Weipa Squash ďŹ xtures. When the A grade team Stubby faced Team Yard Glass, Dave Howell (as sub for A1 Owen) defeated Aaron Schleich (3-1), A2 Jeff Berry lost in four games against Nick Brookes (1-3), and A3 Chrisden Russ toughed it out against Wendy Long, eventually calling her bluff and winning (3-2). Team Pot seemed a big at this week against Team Schooner, even though A1 Dave Edward defeated Luke Dorsett (3-0), and despite A2 Scott McCahon winning his third game, which was forced to “longâ€? against Grant Foster. Grant won (1-3), Wayne (as sub for A4 Shay) lost to Jay Dumbleton (0-3). Competition between Team Tallie and Team Pint was stiff. A1 Ross Hyytinen perhaps went into this game a little cocky, knowing Rod Bielby (playing as sub for Tom) had just played a very tough ďŹ ve games in his own right, but agonisingly came out on top after the third game went to “longâ€? (3-2). A2 Glen Egan met with much resistance against Rod when they
faced-off for ďŹ ve games, two of them stretching to “longâ€? but it was Glen’s night (3-2). A3 Steve Lugsdin, despite forcing two games to “longâ€? and losing both of them, did manage to win one against his forceful opponent Laurie Raleigh (1-3). A4 Amanda McKenzie could not quite take control of the match against Jimmy Baira but gave it a good nudge, going down (2-3). In B grade fixtures, Team Long Island Iced Tea predominantly led their opponents in most games against Team Martini. B8 Sam Trebble played like a Trojan against Charissa Hill and her determination paid off (3-1). B7 Shaelene Spiteri convincingly defeated myself in the first game, but then I fought back and took the second game, however Shaelene narrowly defeated me in the next two games (3-1). B6 Katie Delfs easily defeated Emilly Jackson (3-0), B5 Tim Manning had a tough match against Brooke Gwynne but if he had not won the fourth “longâ€? game, the result could have been very different (3-1).

and another by forfeit due to an accident – good to hear Lucy and other occupants are okay. B7 Adrian Costello had a great match defeating Kristie McManus (31) and B5 Ian Newsome convincingly defeated Bianca Borg (3-0). Not so for B4 Fiona Newsome. Despite winning her ďŹ rst game, she then lost the next three (1-3). B3 Joe Buckley seems to need to lose his first game before he gets his eye in, then this week, he almost “pantsedâ€? his opponent Tom Bellinger in the next three, with Tom only achieving one point in three games, (3-1). The next two matches were fantastic displays of sporting prowess when B2 Ben Braun narrowly defeated his rival Stephen Borg, despite Stephen taking the ďŹ rst “longâ€? game (3-2). B1 Adam Woodhouse dropped his guard against Justin Hyytinen and lost the second game, then the third “longâ€? game, but rallied back to claim the ďŹ nal two games (3-2). B4 Nicole Dearling played her hardest, but to no avail, against her stronger opponent Omer Saeed (0-3). B2 Chris Bienvenu defeated Randall O’Neill in ďŹ ve games, which would have been good to watch, as after Randall took the ďŹ rst game he then failed to score a point in the second game, but then forced the third game to “longâ€?, won the fourth and conceded the ďŹ fth (3-2). Team Margarita was defeated by Team Pina Colada with the exception of the middle match. B8 Jess Hall went down to Andrew Glen (0-3), B7 Kylie Carr won the ďŹ rst game only, but played an excellent match against Cecily Baira with the third game going to “longâ€? (1-3). B6 Denica Russ had a “longâ€? three-game match against Aleisha O’Brien (3-0), B4 Melissa Ghee won alternate games against Patrick Lightart but lost despite forcing the ďŹ fth game to “longâ€?
