DRY ARGUMENT:

Local licensees unite to minimise harm

Licensees of the Carpentaria Golf Club, Weipa Bowls Club and Albatross Bay Resort have united in a common cause and are sending the message: if you misbehave, you could be banned from all three premises. By Giembra Busmer

THREE Weipa licensees, and members of the Weipa Liquor Accord, are presenting a united front in an effort to minimise harm from alcohol consumption in the community. Nick Prus (Weipa Bowls Club licensee), Jayne Broadbent (Albatross Bay Resort licensee) and Peter Ross (Carpentaria Golf Club licensee) have been working together

to develop proactive strategies to enhance safety and security at licensed premises, following almost 12-months of inactivity by the Weipa Liquor Accord. The three licensees met recently, along with a representative of the Archer River Roadhouse, and decided to re-introduce the Accord. The charter has been re-written, and aims and objectives have been established, and will be now be

introduced, with advisory input from Queensland Police (Weipa), Weipa Town Authority, the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, and relevant stakeholders by invitation. “Of course we want people to enjoy themselves, but they must do it responsibly,” Ms Broadbent said. “We want the community to understand that we, as licensees,

will be working together to manage alcohol-related issues. When we stop takeaway alcohol sales, or request ID it is because there is, or could be, an issue, and we are in constant communication with each other.” One of the strategies the Weipa Accord will introduce immediately is banning from the three licensed premises, as well as off-license establishments, for patrons in seri-

ous breach of liquor licensing laws. “In the case of such a breach, a licensee member of the Accord will submit a banning request to the Accord,” Mr Prus explained. “The request has to be supported by evidence, such as video footage, Police reports or statements by staff. The members of the Accord will review the request, and make a decision regarding further action.” UU continued page 2

United licensees deliver clear message UU from page 1

“If a decision is made to ban the person the Accord will send a letter, by registered mail, to the person in question, informing him/her they are to be banned, and offering the chance to appeal the decision at the next Weipa Liquor Accord meeting.” Weipa Liquor Accord meetings are held once a month, and patrons committing a serious breach of liquor licensing laws will be banned from the Weipa Bowls Club, the Albatross Bay Resort and the Carpentaria Golf Club until their appeal is heard. “Once the Accord has heard the appeal, they will issue their final decision,” Mr Prus said. “If you choose not to appear at the appeal the decision will still be made. “If the decision to ban a patron proceeds, the Weipa Liquor Accord will notify the Weipa Police.” Depending on the severity of the breach, a ban from the three establishments of one week to a lifetime can be imposed.

“Each and every banning request will be treated individually, and could also include off-premises banning, meaning the take-away alcohol outlets of the Accord member’s establishments would also be off limits,” Mr Prus explained. Ms Broadbent said the Weipa Liquor Accord is keen to work with the local community, and the Weipa Police, to promote a co-operative approach to developing safe and well-managed environments in and around licensed premises. “We are working together as a united group of licensees to minimise harm and we need the community to help us with this. “We need people to be aware that they will be asked for identification when they purchase take-away alcohol. “We are trying to work closely with the Queensland Police service and we welcome community involvement, and input from local councils, to work together to achieve the same goals,” Ms Broadbent said.

o Cyclone OH dear, it’s that time of year again. The icy grip of winter is tightening and as I sit here in my house, the weak sun is glistening on the icicles hanging from the gutter. Already I have to climb under the doona at night, wearing a flannel nightie down to my toes, complete with woolly socks, mittens and a beanie. One of these mornings, I will be waking up to a blanket of pristine snow covering the yard and sitting on the coconut palms. I just know it.

Still, things are not too bad. This week I’m going to join the flood of northerners rushing into town to by suitable seasonal clothes. Aren’t we lucky that the big shops are so clever about stocking the things we need up here? They are ready with everything from lambskin slippers for me to shuffle around my freezing house without getting frostbitten toes, to those big furry hats Russians wear to keep their ears warm. And everything is in exciting autumn

and winter colours. All those dark browns and greys make you want to rush out and buy armfuls of cosy cardigans and tweed skirts. And boots? There are so many, and I’m a soft touch for elegant European-style boots. They make me feel like Anna Karenina, or Wanda in furs. I’m also a soft touch for the après-ski scene, so I always book a holiday in Yungaburra at this time of year. Skiing the slopes of Mount Bartle-Frere all day, and then home to the hotel to party, and enjoy lots of mulled wine and good solid food. Well, congratulations to the managers of our big shops is what I say. Everyone else seems to think we live in a tropical paradise and would be happy enough wandering around in shorts and tee-shirts all year. Our big shops understand that winter comes every year and we really, really need all those stylish cold weather clothes...

Scott McCahon appointed Cape York Hospital and Health Board chair THE long-awaited return of local control in the delivery of health services in Cape York is a step closer following the appointment of local representatives to chair Hospital and Health Boards across the state. The Minister for Health Lawrence Springborg announced on Monday, May 21, the appointment of chairs for 15 Hospital and Health Boards across Queensland. The Governor in Council has agreed to the appointment of Scott McCahon to chair the Cape York Hospital and Health Board. “The people of Cape York deserve to have greater trust and confidence in local health services and this can be delivered by restoring local Health Boards to Queensland communities to oversee the management of health services, Mr Springborg said. “The Board will put decision making back in the hands of the community where it belongs, increasing local accountability for the delivery of health services. “As the new chair of the Cape

York Hospital and Health Board Mr McCahon will be accountable for the performance of the local Hospital and Health Board in purchasing and providing health services that meet the needs of their area. “The Queensland Government is committed to a health system that puts patients first, gives the local community a say in services, and values the knowledge and hard work of skilled frontline staff, he said. Minister Springborg said Mr McCahon brings extensive experience to the role of chair of the local Hospital and Health Board. “A pharmacist with a community pharmacy business, Scott has strong health sector, Indigenous health and community knowledge and networks, as well as experience as a chair in health and community related boards in the Cape York area, he said. “Scott has an important role to play in transforming the way local health services are governed and I congratulate him on the appointment. The recruitment of board members will be finalised in coming weeks.

TRADITIONAL OWNERS and a team of government Ministers led by Premier Campbell Newman celebrated the handing back of sections of a National Park at the centre of a 40-year land rights battle, on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. The Premier, his Ministers and Wik Mungkan, Kaanju and Ayapathu people sat side-by-side at the ceremony to celebrate the signing of an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA), providing for the transfer of more than 450,000 hectares to Aboriginal freehold land. This includes 75,074 hectares of Aboriginal freehold land revoked from the National Park, of which 32,000 hectares will become Nature

parks in 1983 and 1977 respectively, in a move by then-Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen to prevent Traditional Owners, led by the late, great, John Koowarta, from gaining ownership of the land. Mr Koowarta famously pursued the matter to the High Court. Mr Koowarta died in June 1991, aged 50. His 70 year-old widow Martha, who attended the ceremony, said at the time he died of a broken heart. Traditional owners were overjoyed 40 years of struggle was over. “I just feel so happy today, and look forward to enjoying my land which has been returned after such a long time,” said traditional owner Victor Lawrence.

Mungkan Kandju National Park is 576km north-north-west of Cairns via the Peninsula Developmental Road, and is comprised of two distinct land parcels, separated by a 15km wide corridor of pastoral land (Merapah Station). It is an amalgamation of two earlier national parks –Archer River National Park in the west and Rokeby National Park in the east, both former pastoral leases known as Rokeby Station and Archer River Pastoral Holding. A GROUP of dedicated Queensland Health nurses and health workers – including Weipa’s Helen Withers and Yvonne Mandie – is proving distance is no barrier as they provide remote women with vital health services. The Mobile Women’s Health Service celebrates its 21st birthday this year, delivering health checks, advice and care to women living in rural and remote regions in Queensland. “The Mobile Women’s Health Service was created 21 years ago to address the lower participation rates in cervical screening for women in rural and remote areas,’’ Queensland Health Cancer Screening Services Branch Senior Director Jennifer Muller said. “We know women living in very remote areas can’t always get to the major towns as they are just so far away and they often have families to look after. “So we bring the health service to them – ensuring they have access to health checks such as regular Pap smears and women’s health checks. “Since the Mobile Women’s Health Service and the Queensland Cervical Screening Program started in 1991, more Queensland women are having Pap smears. This has reduced the number of women developing cervical cancer.’’ The Mobile Women’s Health Service was launched in Cape York in 1994. Queensland Health nurse Helen Withers and Indigenous Women’s Health Worker Yvonne Mandie are based at Weipa and run clinics for women at eight sites across the Cape. The “mobiles visit women

in really remote Aboriginal communities from Mapoon to Kowanyama along western Cape York Peninsula as well as Coen and Lockhart River. The communities are connected by dirt roads, which are cut off during the wet season from November to April. “We plan our visits around the wet season, Mrs Withers said. “In the dry season we drive to the closer communities and we fly into the more remote communities and spend two or three nights there. Mrs Withers came to Weipa on holiday after finishing her general nursing training in Victoria in 1973. She took a job at Weipa Hospital and then became Weipa’s first Mobile Women’s Health Service nurse in 1994. “I met my husband and have raised my three sons here and I enjoy work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Mrs Withers said.

“It was hard when we first established the service. Women didn’t come to the clinic if they were well. I had to teach them about screening and how Pap smears can prevent cervical cancer and are part of keeping well.’’ Mrs Withers works closely with Yvonne Mandie, who is from Bamaga, on the tip of Cape York Peninsula. Mrs Mandie has been an Indigenous Health Worker since 1996 and plays a vital role in promoting health checks to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, providing information and helping them feel comfortable attending. Ms Muller said the dedication the Mobile Women’s nurses and health workers showed for rural women’s health was second to none as they often traversed enormous distances to see women, leaving behind their own families for a week or more at a time. “Some travel more than

500km from their base by road, air or sea to ensure Queensland’s rural and remote women have access to a female Pap smear service, Ms Muller said. “Since 1991, it’s estimated the ‘mobiles’, have travelled more than four million kilometres. “Together each year, they provide services for over 8500 women, travelling more than 64,000km to hold 1200 clinics at 190 communities across Queensland. “The 4WD is your friend out on the road but we have nurses and health workers who access remote areas by planes, boats and even tractors.’’ The “mobiles complement and work in conjunction with health services in their areas, including general practitioners and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and have extensive referral networks to other local health professionals. The Mobile Women’s Health Service was piloted from five bases in 1991 – Cairns, Townsville, Roma, Mackay and Mount Isa. It has since grown to 15 bases including Charleville (since 1993), Longreach, Thursday Island and Weipa (1994), Dalby, Goomeri, Toowoomba (1997), Rockhampton (1998), Bundaberg and Cairns South (2005). In addition to the 15 nurses, there are two Indigenous Women’s Health Workers in Cape York and the Torres Strait, who work with the nurses to help meet the needs of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. The Weipa-based service runs clinics at Aurukun, Coen, Kowanyama, Lockhart River, Mapoon, Napranum, Pormpuraaw and Weipa.

Happiness and joy

Good Life

Marine Logistics

with Jeany Schall

I RECENTLY had the chance to participate in a wonderful lecture by Amanda Gore, the founder of the Joy Project. It was a very powerful presentation which inspired me even more to inspire others. Here’s a wrap-up of what I took out of this joyous lecture...

Queensland Depots: Humbug Wharf, Weipa 24 Tingara Street, Portsmith

You may wonder, what is the difference between joy and happiness? We all want to be happy. Happy is a place where we jump around with a smile on our face, enjoy good company, fall in love, win a prize. It’s great! But happiness usually happens because something or someone happens to us. Usually happiness does not last for a long time and when it’s gone, we are on a search for happiness once again. Joy may be something we can en-joy for a longer lasting time. Joy is an attitude within, that lights up our day and the day of the people around us. Imagine yourself in a dark tunnel, no light in sight. You are anxious, unhappy and maybe angry that you can’t see where you’re going. Well really, you can’t do anything because you can’t see. Then someone comes along and brings a light into the tunnel and you are happy (the loved one, the phone call that says you won a prize, the promotion at work, etc). Once they have gone though, you are sitting in the dark again. When you are a joyful being, you may sit there in the dark and all of a sudden you realise the tunnel slowly lights up. You look around to see where the light might be coming from until you realise the light comes from within. Your bright attitude towards life and yourself is actually lighting up the darkness and everything becomes less challenging. Once you realize you have the

light and power to make your own joy, life can become much easier. This does not mean all your problems will disappear. When you stop blaming other people for joy or sadness you may realize it’s only your attitude towards yourself or to the things that happen to you that are really causing you to suffer. This actual fact may be beneficial in itself. Sometimes this attitude is hard to comprehend, for example if you suffer a serious illness or a loved one dies. But even seriously ill people can start to value life as it is. I practice to create more joy in my life everyday - some days more successful than others. You and I have every day, of the rest of our life to practice joy. Make yourself happy from within and live a joyous life. Below are some tips Amanda shared with us and tools to practice joy.

THE Pharisees and Herod’s party tried to trap Jesus with regards to paying taxes, and when the Lord answered with great skill, silencing them, the Sadducees thought they could succeed in making a fool of him. They did not believe in the resurrection, whereas the Lord and the Pharisees did believe in that teaching, with the Lord even teaching that he was the resurrection and the life. (John Ch 11 v 25). They put forward a very unlikely story of a woman marrying seven brothers, and when they all died, including the woman, whose wife would she be in heaven?

The Lord said that there would be a different body in heaven, as the body this side of the grave was meant only for this world. The Lord knew that the Sadducees believed in the Law of Moses as shown in the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, so when he challenged the Sadducees he quoted from those books. To prove that the law of Moses accepts the resurrection, he said in Mark Ch 12 vs 26-27, “Now, as for the dead being raised: haven’t you ever read in the Book of Moses the passage about the burning bush? There it is

written that God said to Moses, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is the God of the living, not of the dead. You are completely wrong!” (See Exodus Ch 3 vs 1-6). God was saying that he was still in a living relationship with his servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob even though they had died long before Moses saw the burning bush. As the Lord said, the Pharisees did not really understand the Scriptures or how powerful God really was! (Mark Ch 12 v 24). Amen to that! Rev Michael Connolly.

YOU work hard and you deser ve the best. Bluewater’s master-planned residential development at Trinity Beach embraces this belief, offering the ultimate lifestyle and investment security for north Queensland’s burgeoning FIFO (fly in, fly out) market. Situated a short, 15-minute drive north of Cairns airport, Bluewater is nature’s playground - spanning 155 hectares between two World Heritage listed attractions – Wet Tropics rainforest and Great Barrier Reef. This idyllic setting is all about the great outdoors – forest pathways, verdant parklands, white boats, sparkling marinas, barbecues and days spent at the beach. And while all this might seem miles away from the everyday, Bluewater is just minutes from Smithfield shopping centre, a choice of schools, James Cook University and the central hub of Cairns. From the people who are shaping its future to those who call Bluewater home, everyone agrees in the vibrant quality of life that this innovative and naturally beautiful community offers. As a place to live, play or invest, the beauty of Bluewater is its diversity; that, along with affordability and quality, captures the tropical spirit of north Queensland. Bluewater comprises a selection of housing allotments positioned in rainforest, park and waterfront precincts.

After two sales this week, only five of the waterfront allotments remain, positioned overlooking the development’s impressive 108-berth marina. These ‘lifestyle’ blocks are rare and represent the region’s last waterfront land development. Bluewater has just released a new offer for anyone purchasing these remaining few by pledging to make up to $39,000 in interest rate payments. Bluewater Marina was opened in 2007 and since then has set the benchmark in marina management throughout Australia. As Cairns’ only cyclone-rated, fully secured and managed, freehold marina, it is not surprising to report high demand and satisfaction with periods of 100 per cent occupancy. These results underscore the investment value of owning a marina berth which is further enhanced by the current shortage Australia wide. Bluewater’s marina comprises a choice of 10, 12, 15 and 18 metre, single and multi-hulled berths. Added benefits include Bluewater Marina’s position - set back from the coast line to offer an unprecedented level of protection against tropical storms. This safety and security feature ranks highly for boat owners and was successfully put to the test during last year’s Cyclone Yasi. Bluewater Marina has just released a new investment opportunity for the first six berths sold that provides a $30,000 saving as well as payment of

levies for the first three years. This represents an enormous saving that can be used in conjunction with Bluewater’s very attractive and affordable 99 year lease that is available from $99,000. In keeping with its strong design philosophy, Bluewater has secured an impressive line up of building partners, all of which share a sympathetic approach to the environment. As a general rule, Bluewater’s building standards focus on homes that invite the natural world inside while taking advantage of elevation, views and breeze flow. Many of the homes, by names such as David McCoy Homes, Better Homes Queensland and CPC Constructions, are thoughtfully created to complement the tropical surrounds and proximity to the beach with functional design. To highlight its building philosophy and sympathetic approach to the environment, Bluewater will host the first in a series of seminars for prospective home builders. In short, Bluewater is the best of many worlds – a beach side lifestyle with the convenience of close proximity to Cairns and Smithfield in a master planned community that offers stateof-the-art infrastructure and extensive public amenities. About Bluewater Trinity Beach Integrating a variety of rainforest and waterfront home sites and a world-class, 108 berth marina set on 155 hectares in

Trinity Beach, North Queensland, Bluewater is a master planned community development by Brookfield Residential Properties. About Bluewater Marina Located just a few kilometres from the Great Barrier Reef, Bluewater Marina offers an idyllic lifestyle for boat owners living in and travelling to Cairns. The marina is Cairns’ only cyclone-rated, fully-secured and managed freehold marina. It comprises 108 mono and multi-hulled berths equipped with state-of the-art facilities and deepwater ocean access, the marina is equipped for most sizes of craft with 10m, 12m, 15m and 18m (40 – 60 feet) berths currently available. Berths are available for sale or casual/long term rental and can now be secured with the introduction of an affordable, 99 year lease option from $129,000. About Brookfield Residential Properties B ro o k f i e l d R e s i d e n t i a l Properties delivers high quality, award-winning residential projects across the globe. The company has a substantial portfolio of apartment, mixed use and community projects across Australia with over US $150 billion of residential assets under management worldwide. PAWS UP to the puppies who graduated from Tonia May’s puppy preschool last Saturday. I was allowed to go along and watch the ceremony and my K9 buddies made me, and their humans very proud. I particularly liked Squire’s graduation hat. His dad seemed a bit upset when Squire tried to eat the tassle-thing hanging off it, but I have to admit it did look pretty tasty, and I probably would have done exactly the same thing given the chance! My dad took the reins at my obedience class this week for the first time. I did my best to show him all the things I have learned so far, and he gave me lots of hugs and praise – hope mum takes me next week though, ‘cause she seems to pack more treats than the old man! Tonia will be running further puppy preschool and dog obedience classes in coming months and I highly recommend my fellow K9s and their humans to take advantage of these wonderful courses.

Your Lucky ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) A meeting with friends later in the week will help you to relax. You have been under a lot of stress recently, particularly at work, and need to take it easy for a while. Romance. A new way of looking at an old problem may help you to find a way of solving it. Don’t be afraid to consider an option which may seem strange at first.

TAURUS (April 21st - May 21st) You may be asked to play a more active role at a social gathering that you are invited to. Take any new responsibilities seriously. Romance. This will be an excellent week for romance. A favourable aspect to Venus will bring out the best in both you and your partner.

GEMINI (May 22nd - June 21st)

FOR KIDS

A friend who wants to spend more time with you will be disappointed if you always seem to be busy. Do your best to be a bit more sociable, at least with the people who matter most to you. Romance. You owe your partner a few favours at the moment. Don’t be too slow to give them a hand.

CANCER (June 22nd - July 23rd) Be especially careful of any long-term promises which are unlikely to be fulfilled. You need to focus on events which are right in front of you rather than on something which may never happen. Romance. Some important changes are on the horizon, and they are mainly for the better. In the meantime you should stop fretting.

LEO (July 24th - August 23rd) Information which you come across entirely by chance will prove to be much more relevant to your present circumstances than you expect. Follow up on this discovery. Romance. A meal in an expensive restaurant later in the week will be well worth the effort. You will both enjoy being made a fuss of.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd)

FINDWORD No. 99 A LAUGH WITH LOTSA

React quickly to a change in your working environment. You will need to adapt to a situation which may not have been of your making. Romance. You may be feeling a little bit isolated at the moment. Let your partner know that you would like more support and you will get more than you bargained for!

LIBRA (September 24th - October 23rd) Don’t miss an offer to get together with friends. You have had a number of things on your plate recently, and need to give yourself the chance to relax. Romance. An unexpected message from a long-standing admirer will change your feelings towards this person. You should get together for a meeting as soon as possible.

SCORPIO (October 24th - November 22nd)

For all your printing needs – www.lotsa.com.au

MUDDY RIVER

Look between the lines to work out what has really been going on recently. Recent events may not have happened in quite the way you think. Romance. A friend of yours may be interested in getting to know your partner better. Be careful of jealousies which lie underneath the surface!

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd - December 21st) A difficult aspect to Pluto could bring some secrets into the open over the next few days. Make sure that you have some good explanations up your sleeve! Romance. Don’t let stress from work affect your relationship. You need to relax completely when you are with your partner.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd - January 20th) Don’t put all your energy into a project which may not come off. It might be more sensible to spread your risk by trying more than one option. Romance. A liaison with a member of the opposite sex could make your partner jealous. You will be surprised how easily they can misinterpret the situation.

AQUARIUS (January 21st - February 19th)

QUOTE OF THE DAY Music in the soul can be heard by the universe. – Lao Tzu

SOLUTIONS No. 99

A dream will help you to sort out your feelings about a new acquaintance. The person you dream about won’t be quite the same as the person you know in real life: the dream person will be a reflection of your true feelings. Romance. A new relationship may suddenly become more serious this week. At times, though, you may not be comfortable with the pace.

PISCES (February 20th - March 20th) Your energy levels will be very high at the moment. This will be an excellent time to make progress on jobs which you have been putting off. Romance. A boost to your confidence will help you to sort out a longstanding problem in your love-life. The solution will be easier than you think!

Queenslander! Queenslander! Queenslander! I CAN’T wait - I’m so excited! State of Origin is here and why wouldn’t you be a Queenslander? I do think that NSW will put up a good show this year, but I’m also very confident Queensland will win the series 2-1. My tips are Queensland will win in Melbourne quite convincingly , NSW will scrape home in Sydney by two points, and Queensland will blast the Blues away in Brisbane, to win a seventh consecutive series win . Round 11 saw five games take place and didn’t we have some interesting results. The Wests Tigers caused an upset over the in-form Warriors, while the Cowboys were just too classy for the hapless Panthers. The Sea Eagles were too strong for the Roosters while the Rabbitohs played in a thriller against the Dragons, and the Rabbits really did pull some magic

out of a hat to win . With State of Origin here I have to talk about my favourite five moments in this great pinnacle of footy. 5. Arthur Beetson leading the Maroons out on the home of rugby league at Suncorp Stadium (Lang Park). I was only three at the time, but I did have a feeling in my belly it was the start of something big, and it truly was. 4. Ty Williams scoring a try in front of me in 2005, as I was there supporting one of my great mates, who was a great role model for his region and people. 3. Wally Lewis scoring the match winning try in 1987 in Sydney, and there he was punching the air in happiness - what a great moment. 2. Mark Coyne’s winning try in 1994 to seal the game after the siren - what a great Queensland feeling. 1. Darren Lockyer’s send-off

Scotty’s AFL round-up SO, I managed to escape the clutches of daily life and family duties for the weekend, packed the bag with beanie and both pairs of trousers and headed down to Melbourne for a weekend of footy and catching up with mates. The anticipation built all through last week to the point that on Thursday I would have to say I wasn’t much use to anyone, and just had to get out of there. I’m sure I drove all and sundry absolutely nuts with every conversation leading to the upcoming weekend and the associated frivolities. Happily for me The Alakanum Couchsnoozer was a willing companion on the journey, and as he will soon kiss goodbye to life without kids he had the attitude of a man presented with his last supper - he sought to savour every moment. The other contributing factor to my excitement to get away has been the ongoing dramas with the new arrival in the house, Azrael the kitten, or Azrael the Terrible. The Three Legged Houdini is con-

fused at the best of times, but she has been driven to downright disillusionment in recent weeks. After eight years of unsuccessfully trying to become an “inside/outside” dog, she has seen the cat rock up and just about get allocated a seat at the kitchen table inside of a day and a half. Of course, Management and The Princess can’t see anything wrong with this, but The Deputy, Houdini and myself see things as they actually are. I found myself under pressure last weekend trying to fold the washing on a Sunday afternoon, and it’s hard enough to get that right at the best of times, let alone with a kitten jumping around and trying to eat me and the sheets at the same time. Once I hit the fitted sheets things really got tricky, and my usual technique of shut my eyes and hope for the best didn’t get me through the quality control check. In the end I got the job done and it didn’t take The Princess that long to find Azrael folded up neatly in the pillow slips. Management struggled to see the funny

last year in Brisbane. I was very lucky to be there watching it in the stands, and let me just say I still get goose bumps down my spine talking about it when the boys carried him off after a tremendous victory.

ROUND 9 – Fri, May 25 - Sun, May 27 FRI, MAY 25 Western Bulldogs v Geelong @ Etihad Stadium SAT, MAY 26 Richmond v Hawthorn @ MCG Gold Coast v Port Adelaide @ Metricon Stadium St Kilda v Sydney @ Etihad Stadium GWS v Essendon @ Skoda Stadium Adelaide v Collingwood @ AAMI Stadium SUN, MAY 27 North Melbourne v Brisbane @ Etihad Stadium Carlton v Melbourne @ MCG West Coast v Fremantle @ Patersons Stadium side of things and I decided a weekend away with old friends might be the best result for everyone. The weekend was punctuated by counter meals and games of footy, interspersed with stories old and new, with old mates and sore stomach muscles from laughing so hard. The sort of weekend that’s good for your soul and bad for your kidneys and bank balance. It was also great to be at The “G” on two nights in a row with crowds of 75k and up, and also catching the Footy Means Business guys playing in the Rio Tinto Cup, a game that pitched the best under 23s Indigenous players against each other in a game for bragging rights. The northern boys came out on top this year and the Cape was well represented by Ben Masso and Miles Kerindun. The guys did us proud and had a great experience on top of it all. The footy was pretty good too. The Cats and Pies didn’t exactly put on a game of high standard but it was close, and still entertaining. The crowd on Saturday night was a

ripper with the Bomber and Tiger armies going head to head. We ended up leaving early to beat the crowds into Richmond, and saw most of the second half on the tele, and the atmosphere in the pub was just as good. The Kangas and the Dees are both really hitting some trouble, I hope they get through this patch and start to see the light at the end of the tunnel for all our sakes. In all the excitement disaster struck with my tips. I’ve been entering them in two weeks in advance so I don’t run the risk of forgetting. So, what do I do this week? I forget to do them. One for me, and a lot of catch up to do. Next week will see the Cats, Hawks, Power, Swans and Crows in what should be a cracker against the Pies, Bombers, Kangas, Blues and Eagles in a belter of a derby. Enjoy your week, whatever you’re up to, and chat next week. Scotty

Local girls selected for marathon project

IMP trainer Tim Row, with Anna and Nicky Kerindun, and 2011 IMP participant Bianca Graham at the Weipa try-outs in March, 2012.

AFTER a nationwide search, more than 130 applications and an exhaustive screening process, Rob de Castella and his Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) team have selected 12 Indigenous runners to be part of the IMP 2012 New York City Marathon squad. The project this year targeted regional and remote communities across Australia, with six of the 12 runners representing remote communities. Anna and Nicky Kerindun attended the IMP try-outs in Weipa during March and were both selected to participate in the program. Originally from Aurukun, the girls are trainees with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa, and said they applied

to the project “because it was a good opportunity, and to make our grandparents and family proud. Under the guidance of the former Australian of the Year and World Champion marathon runner, the six male and six female athletes will be put through their paces at a number of intensive training camps, leading them a step closer to completing the world’s most famous foot race. “These 12 young Indigenous runners are following in the footsteps of the 15 Indigenous Marathon Project runners before them that have been mentored through the New York Marathon over the past two years, de Castella said. “They are sending a powerful message to Indigenous Australia and reinforcing our slogan;

if you can run a marathon, you can do anything. The athletes met for the first time when they came together in Canberra in May for the first training camp, which not only included a number of training and fitness sessions, but also saw the athletes start units of their Certificate III in Community Recreation (Indigenous Healthy Living). Camps will also be held throughout the year in the Gold Coast, Sydney and Alice Springs, with runners taking part in a range of different fun runs. The final team of 10 to travel to New York will be announced following a 30km test event in September.

A Grade squash fixtures Large turn-out for junior golf bring mixed results A GRADE fixtures at the Weipa Squash Courts showed mixed results from the previous round against the same teams. Team Pint A1 Tom Murray played in his own right this week and scored a (3-1) victory against a Team Yard Glass strong opponent Aaron Schleich. A2 Rod Bielby met with stiff opposition from Nick Brookes, which resulted in a loss for Rod (2-3), although A4 Jimmy Baira’s scores improved each game, Dallas Goodwin was the stronger player on the night (0-3). Team Pot’s A1 Dave Edward dashed Team Tallie’s Ross Hyytinen hopes of victory in three games (3-0). A2 Scott McCahon commenced strongly but flailed in the next three, with Glen Egan defeating him (1-3). A3 Shane Spagnol was a more formidable opponent this round against

Steve Lugsdin despite losing the first game (3-1). A4 Shay Alley had a fizzer of a second game which meant that Amanda McKenzie took victory (0-3). A1 Lukas Dorsett was outplayed by Owen Witt when Team Schooner confronted Team Stubby, even though the first game was forced to “long”, it was Owen all the way (0-3). Jay Dumbleton (as sub for A3 Sherie) scored one game and forced two to “long”, but was defeated by Chrisden Russ in what would have been a very athletic game to watch (1-3). A4 Jay Dumbleton played extremely well even though his opponent Ben Tantau was worthy enough to force two games to “long”, but Jay’s performance improved from the last round (3-1). Yours squashfully, Ruth Harris

THERE was a fantastic turnout of junior golfers this week at the Carpentaria Golf Club, and it is particularly pleasing to see more girls joining the club. The results from Sundays rounds are: A grade winner Taylor Francisco, runner-up - Maddison Edward. B-grade winner - Brianna

Elms, runner-up - Jordon Hohns. C grade winner - Max Newman, runner-up - Ebony Potter. C3 grade winner - Kaiden Williams, runner-up - Lochy Hohns. Training will be on Tuesday this week at 4pm. Starting times on Sunday are A and B grade 7.30 am, C grade 8am, and beginners at 8.30am.

Don’t forget there 15 minutes before tee-off to prepare. Next week is monthly medal. Cost is $5 for the monthly medal competition and barbecue. Don’t forget your hat, water bottles, sunscreen and parents, and while in the clubhouse hats off, shoes on.

See you on the tee

The life of a dirt karter I WAS lying in bed the other morning just thinking, and feeling good about myself when my wife rolled over and said that my last column in the Bully was boring. Now, being the excitement machine that I am it started me thinking, and the following bizarre questions came to mind. My intellectual brilliance, is it a gift? Some would say yes, but for me it can be a real burden at times as I’m continually looked on for the answers to some of life’s unanswered questions. These include questions such as “how long is a piece of string?”; “how tall is a tree?” and “how do they get that little boat in the bottle?”. People that know me say I’m a very simple man, never more evident then my school marks, but let me tell you, it really takes a lot to get me excited, however this Saturday night’s second round of the Enzed Hose Doctor Top End Series has got my body doing some strange things. I’m not talking about what happened when I went through my teens, I’m talking about the

There will be plenty of dirt kart action at the Weipa International Raceway this Saturday night. Photo: Giembra Busmer.

smile I can’t take of my face, or when the alarm goes off in the morning and I jump out of bed and run to the kitchen instead of crawling. This Saturday night is expected to be better then the last race meeting with more dirt karters, better racing, faster laps, more food (in fact, triple what we had last time) and you all have an opportunity to come and see the new sensation that is dirt go karting.

So, this Saturday night, May 26, hop in your car with all the family and drive directly to the Weipa International Raceway (just near the Weipa International Airport) and come and watch the Cape’s new stars shine on the dirt track. Racing starts 7pm, and you all know it’s free to get in, so just do yourself a favour and come out to the track. See ya – Derek

Pride devastated by Mosby tragedy NORTHERN Pride and the Far North Queensland rugby league community are in mourning following the tragic loss of upand-coming football star, Francis (Maia) Mosby on Friday, May 18. The 19-year old was critically injured in a single vehicle rollover on the Peninsula Development Road, just north of Mt Molloy and was airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital where he underwent surgery, but later died. A Pride spokesman said “Northern Pride and the whole family of north Queensland rugby league are shattered by this unbelievable tragedy. “Maia was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and had such a positive inuence on everyone, especially through his community work with the Take Pride Program. “This is a devastating time for everyone at the club and our hearts are broken for Maia’s family, his teammates and his friends.

“Our first priority is to rally around Maia’s family and those within our club to ensure all the necessary support is available and provided.â€? Former Pride assistant coach and former Cape York QRL and ARL development ofďŹ cer Cameron Miller was in the vehicle with Mr Mosby when the car rolled. He sustained non life-threatening injuries in the accident and was taken to Mareeba Hospital where he is recuperating. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy, including Cameron Miller who is recovering from the accident.,â€? the Price spokesman said. “We have all lost a very well respected young man taken well before his time.â€? “We’d also like to thank all those people who have left condolence messages in this tragic time – it is much appreciated by everyone who knew Maia.â€?

ONE of the Torres Strait’s most popular sporting events the Island of Origin rugby league series - has been cancelled for 2012. Players from Cape York have competed at the event since it started in 1985. Usually held at Badu Island over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June, a lack of people to help run the carnival has led to the shock decision. The Western Cape Bulletin received a copy of a statement sent out by Wayne Guivarra who has been the hard working organiser for many years. “Please be advised that the 2012 ‘Island of Origin’ has been cancelled for this year. This decision was made by the two remaining active committee members. “A number of respective meetings had been called but unfortunately, only a handful of interested people turned up

and we were all of the opinion that the 2012 event should be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, including very limited community support. “Badu United Sporting Association had offered the Island of Origin to the KRL for season 2012, but the KRL have indicated that they cannot possibly host the event due to the time constraints. “There have been groups of people making claims that they can better run sport, including the Island of Origin event, but they have not been seen since publicly making those same statements. “On behalf of Badu United Sporting Association and Badu Island families, I sincerely apologise for the inconveniences this cancellation has caused. It is hoped though that a new committee can be formed, so as to best prepare for other events including the 2013 ‘Island of

BEAUTIFUL sunny weather had Weipa soccer players in high spirits and there was a good turnout for all teams. This week saw a round of competitive and well-matched games enjoyed by all players. Squirts Gold & Green V White & Navy First goal scored by Isaac for the White team. After two big circles of the field Isaac scored again. Ethan from Gold produced a nice strong kick-off which Isaac kicked to the goal but just missed. Darius for Gold got the ball and took it down to their end with Lincoln kicking the goal. Darius immediately evened the scores. Isaac scored a goal from kick-off. Lincoln copied to even the scores again. Isaac took the ball around the Gold players with some fancy footwork to score quickly. Grayson scored a home goal after half time with the change of direction. An awesome, high-scoring game which was enjoyed by all players. Gold 10 White 7. Squirts Gold & Navy V White & Black Five minutes into the match Jack burst through the defence and just missed a shot at goal. The re-start saw Tai run the length of the field and score a goal, followed by Jay skilfully scoring another two goals. The ball was hotly contested until Shonika displayed excellent footwork to deliver the ball to Jack to score. UU continued page 21
